NAIL. February 25, 1981: Edith J. Nail, 85, of Jerseyville died at 7:32 am February 15 at Eunice Smith nursing home, where she had been a resident since May. Surviving are a son, Louis of Jerseyville; a daughter, Margaret L. Pirtle, also of Jerseyville and three grandsons. Burial was at the Oak Grove cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist church of Jerseyville. 02/17/81: Edith J. Nail, 85, of 207 Pleasant St., Jerseyville died at 7:32 am February 15 at the Eunice Smith nursing home in Alton where she had resided since May. She was born January 24, 1896 in Wrights, a daughter of the late George and Margaret Bohrman Keehner. She married Lee Nail December 28, 1915; he died July 13, 1978. Mrs. Nail was a 75 year member of the First Baptist church where she had served as a Sunday School Teacher and Deaconess, Choir Member and Missions Circle Leader and was a member of the Board of Christian Educators. She was a past president of the Jerseyville Woman’s Club, 1960-62, past president of Jersey County Home Bureau, 1935-36 and past president of Jersey Community Hospital Auxiliary, 1955-56. She was the first president of Jersey County Republican Womens Club and in 1975 was awarded homemaker of the year by the Jersey County Homemakers Extension Association. She is survived by one son, Louis Nail, and a daughter, Margaret Lee Pirtle of Jerseyville; and three grandsons. She was preceded in death by a sister and seven brothers. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Tuesday until noon Wednesday at Gubser Funeral Home when the body will be taken to the First Baptist church. Visitation will continue until time of services at 1:30 pm with the Rev. V. Clay Noah officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. The First Baptist church has been named as a memorial. Died 15-02-1981.
NAIL. 7/17/78: Services for Leland F. “Lee” Nail, 87 of 207 Pleasant St., Jerseyville, a retired farmer, were held Sunday afternoon at the First Baptist church in Jerseyville with the Rev. Everett Chambers officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He died at 2:10 pm July 13 at Jersey Community Hospital. Born August 3, 1890, he was a son of Barber and Margaret Cunningham Nail. He is survived by his wife, Edith, one son, Louis Nail, and a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Lee Pirtle; three grandsons. Visitation was held at Gubser Funeral Home. Died 13-07-1978.
NAIL. Republican Examiner. Dec. 1888: Dorothy Nail born in Rowan County, NC September 7, 1804, married to William Keller September 7, 1824. To Illinois. West of Carrollton, then to Jersey. Four brothers and one sister. Samuel Nail, Obadiah Nail, and Martha Ray of Shelbyville, Illinois. Daniel of Litchfield and Barry Nail of Hillsboro, Illinois, she is mother of 14 children, seven survive, J. G. Keller of Kane, D. J. Keller of Springfield, T. C. Keller and Mrs. R. A. McReynolds of Jerseyville, A. W. Keller and Mrs M. A. McReynolds of Morrisonville, Illinois and Mrs. C. E. Cowen of Virden, Illinois. Grandmother of 52. 20 great grandchildren. 84 years. Rev. Laird of Kansas.
NAIL. Jersey County Democrat 23 July 1891: died at his home near Litchfield, Illinois July 15, 1891, Daniel Nail, 88 years. Remains brought here for burial Saturday July 18 and laid to rest beside his wife in Oak Grove cemetery. Following persons from Litchfield, Mr. and Mrs. Berry Nail, Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Nail, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Cromwell, Mrs. E. S. Spencer, Jos. Hunt, John Bitter, Wm. Bitter, A. Kranich, Guy A. Snell and James Thralls. Born in Rowan County, NC January 15, 1803 and in 1824 with his family came to Shelby County, IN. In 1826 married Cynthia Watts who died July 22, 1878. In 1830 he moved to Illinois and settled in Greene County near Bluffdale, where he lived until 1837. From there to Calhoun County For 5 years, then to Jerseyville until 1880, then moved to Litchfield. of family of 11 children, four of whom survive him, he was the oldest. Two brothers and one sister live in Shelby County, Indiana And one brother in Montgomery County, Illinois. He had only one child, at the time of his death, Henry T. Nail, at whose home he died. Funeral services from Oak Grove cemetery. Rev. J. Leeper. Pallbearers: D. G. Wyckoff, Benj. Wedding, J. G. Marston, J. D. Darby, J. S. Daniels and Wallace Leigh. Died 15-07-1891.
NAIRN. 05/14/79: The funeral of Mrs. Edith Louise Nairn, 67, of Main Street, Grafton was held Monday morning at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Grafton with the Rev. Robert Patterson officiating. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery. She died at 6:30 pm May 10 in Grafton, a daughter of Albert and Fannie Goodwin Larbey. Her husband, John Nairn, whom she married May 16, 1931, died August 13, 1955. Mrs. Nairn was a member of the Royal Neighbors Lodge and American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by one son, Gerald “Windy” Nairn of Grafton; three daughters, Virginia Thibodaux of Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, Doris Whitlock and Berneda Usery, both of Grafton; two Sisters, Leila Legate and Grace Pittenger, both of Grafton; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her parents, husband and a daughter preceded her in death. Born 25-03-1912, Died 10-05-1979.
NAIRN. September, 1954: Mrs. Iva Jane Nairn, widow of Charles Nairn, died Wednesday morning, September 8, at eleven o’clock at her home in Grafton. She had been in failing health for some time. Mrs. Nairn was a daughter of the late Ford and S. Isabelle Plummer Wilson and was born at Batchtown on mar. 24, 1881. Her age at the time of death was seventy-three years, five months, and fourteen days. Mrs. Nairn had been a resident of Grafton for thirty-three years. She is survived by two sons, John A. Nairn of Grafton and Charles Leroy Nairn of California and seven grandchildren. Friends may call at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville from 7 pm Thursday, September. 9, until 2 pm Friday and then services will be held at St. Patrick’s church in Grafton Saturday morning, September 11, at nine o’clock. High mass will be celebrated by Rev. Michael Sheehy and interment will be in Scenic Hill cemetery.
NAIRNS. Charles C. Nairns, seventy-four year old Grafton resident, died Thursday morning, December 16. Friends may call at the Nairns home until the time of the funeral which will be held at the home Saturday, December 18 at two o’clock. Interment will be in the American Legion cemetery.
NALLEY. Jerseyville Republican 14 March 1912. Mrs. Wm. G. Nalley died at her home in Alton. 63 years. Born in Jersey County, October 1, 1849. Leaves husband and two daughters. One son, George, preceded.
NAPP. 10-19-1951: Funeral rites were held at the Streeper Funeral Home in Alton Monday afternoon, October 15 for Frank John Napp, 73, of Alton whose death occurred October 12 at the Memorial hospital where he had been a patient for a week. Mr. Napp had been custodian at the College Avenue Presbyterian church for the past seventeen years and the Rev. Francis Henderson, pastor of the church, officiated at the rites. Interment was in the Upper Alton cemetery. Mr. Napp was born in Jersey County April 6, 1878 and had resided in Alton for more than fifty years. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Emma Napp; two daughters, Mrs. Hilda Buttle and Mrs. James McDonald of Alton; two sons, Gerhardt of Wood River and Wilbur of Alton; three brothers and four Sisters, Herman, Carl and Horace Napp, Mrs. Thura Lindley, Mrs. Edward Heckler, Mrs. Bertha Lagemann and Mrs. Freda Challacombe of Alton. He also leaves six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
NARUP. 7/22/80: Carl Henry “Barney” Narup, 75 of Shipman died at 1 pm July 20 at Eldercare nursing home, Alton. Born in Brussels July 13, 1905 he was a son of John and Katherine Kried Narup and was a retired lineman from Central Illinois Public Service Co. He is survived by his wife, the former Thelma Kaslick whom he married September 24, 1939; a son William of Godfrey; Stepdaughter Phyllis Rowling of Grafton; a brother and a sister, Frank Narup of Brussels and Zita Lambert of Alton; six grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Tuesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where the rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm. Services will be conducted at the Funeral Home at 10 am Wednesday by Father William Hembrow. Burial will be in Hartford cemetery.
NARUP. 5/11/78: Funeral mass for Mrs. Catherine Narup, 82, of Fieldon was celebrated at 10 am May 10 at St. Mary’s church, Westwoods, with Father William Hembrow celebrant. Burial was in the church cemetery. Her death occurred at 6:53 am May 8 at St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton. She was born in Calhoun County April 2, 1896 a daughter of Frank and Annie Kamp Mossman. She is survived by her husband, Charles Narup; two sons, Leonard Narup of Alton and Jerome Narup of Kane; seven daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Vernetia) Gullicksrud and Mrs. Laverne (Vera) Dunham of East Alton; Mrs. James (Irene) Erwin and Mrs. Alfred (Loretta) Linenfelser of Jerseyville; Mrs. Jerome (Deloris) Becker of Fulton, Mrs. Fred(norma) Glassbrenner of Plainview and Mrs. Rosalie East of Tallahassee, Florida. Two brothers, Carl Mossman of Jerseyville and Clarence Mossman of Godfrey; and two sisters, Mrs. Marie Kiel of Jerseyville and Mrs. Clara Narup of Alton. The rosary was recited at Jacoby Funeral Home Tuesday evening.
NARUP. 1/27/81: A funeral mass for Charles M. Narup, 90 of Fieldon was celebrated Friday at St. Mary’s church, Westwoods with Msgr. P. O. Heinen as celebrant. Burial was in the church cemetery. His death occurred at 1:20 pm January 21 at Jersey Community Hospital. His wife, the former Catherine Mossman, died 8 May 1978. Narup was owner of the former Fieldon Telephone Company. He was born February 2, 1890 in Calhoun County, a son of Henry and Sarah Clark Narup. His survivors include two sons, Jerome Narup of Kane and Leonard Narup of Alton; seven daughters, Vernetia Gullicksrud of East Alton, Vera Davenport of Wood River, Norma Jean Glassbrenner of Plainview, Deloris Becker of Fieldon, Irene Erwin, Loretta Linenfelser and Rosalie East, all of Jerseyville; one sister, Mary Lewis of Lakeside, LA; 20 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. The rosary was recited Thursday Evening at Jacoby Funeral Home.
NASH. 1913: Mrs. Calloway Nash, wife of late Rev. Nash, died at her home in Los Angeles, California.
NASH. 6/7/79: Funeral services were held at 1 pm Thursday, June 7 for Ruth Alice Nash, 64, of 410 Fletcher Street, Jerseyville at the Gospel Assembly church, Harry Frazer and Louis Kappler officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs. Nash, who was a nurses aide, was born March 22, 1915 in Rosedale the daughter of the late Charles and Lydia Hayes Bradley. She died at 7:20 pm June 4 at Jersey Community Hospital. She married Denver Nash March 22, 1936 and he survives as does one son, Jack Nash of Jerseyville and six Daughters, Nancy Steward, Maquoketa, Iowa; Bonnie Dilks, Jerseyville, Carol Elhers, Warren Michigan; Sandra Nash, Jerseyville; Sharon Feltenstein, Louisville, KY; and Karen Miller, Jerseyville. Also surviving are two brothers, Harry and Albert Bradley of St. Louis, mo; three sisters, Mary isringhausen, Jerseyville; lydia porter, St. Louis, MO; and Emma Worth, Bremerton, Washington and 10 grandchildren.
NASH. 2/1/83: The funeral of Denver P. Nash, 74, 702 Second St., Jerseyville was conducted Sunday afternoon at the Gospel Assembly church by the Rev. Clyde Shaw with burial in Oak Grove cemetery. He died at 7:34 pm January 28 at Alton Memorial hospital. He was born March 19, 1908 in Denton County, MO, a son of Elvi and Addie Lands Nash. He worked in the maintenance department at Monticello College. His survivors are one son, Jack Nash of Jerseyville, five daughters, Nancy Steward, Maquoketa, Iowa; Bonnie Dilks and Karen Miller, Jerseyville; Carol Elhers, Waren, Michigan and Sharon Feltenstein, Sellerburg, IN; three sisters, Jennie Sapaugh and Bessie Riggins of Salem, MO and Clara Wells, St. Anne, MO 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild. His wife, the former Ruth Bradley died June 4, 1979.
NASH. 5/19/81: Services for Sandra J. Nash, 34 of 923 S. State St., Jerseyville, will be conducted at 1 pm Tuesday at the Gospel Assembly church by the Rev. Clyde Shaw. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. She died at 9:21 pm May 16 at Jersey Community Hospital after a lengthy illness. Her survivors are her father, Denver Nash of Jerseyville, a brother, Jack Nash of Jerseyville; five sisters, Nancy Steward of Maquoketa, Iowa, Bonnie Dilks and Karen Miller, both of Jerseyville, Carol Ehlers of Warren, Michigan and Sharon Felterstein of Sellarsburg, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her mother and a sister. Visitation will be from 4 to ? Monday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. The body will be moved to the church at 11 am Tuesday. The Gospel Assembly church has been named as a memorial.

Hamilton, Frank Fessenmeyer, Louis Sunderland and Edward Jacoby. Eldest son of Rev. C. and Emma A. Nash. 30 years of age.
NAYLOR. John Henry Naylor, 58, formerly of Wood River, died at 5:25 pm Monday June 15, 1992 at John Cochran Veterans hospital in St. Louis. Born on February 24, 1934, in Wood River, he was the son of the Late Phillip and Sarah (King) Naylor. He retired after more than 20 years of service in the US Army and served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was employed for 12 years in the maintenance department at Prairie Farms Dairy in Granite City. On March 7, 1981, in Jerseyville he married the former Patricia Knight. She survives. Also surviving are three stepchildren, Ronald Porter, Terry Presley and Christina Scott, all of Rosedale; three step grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Webb of Spanish Lake, MO., and Maudie Montgomery of Carlyle; and a brother, Leo Naylor of Riverside, California. A brother, Charles Naylor; and a sister, Nellie Naylor preceded him in death. Visitation is from 5 to 9 pm Thursday at Jacoby-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are a 1 pm Friday. The Rev.Simon A. Simon will officiate. Burial is in Rosedale cemetery with full military rites. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Assoc. of Illinois.
NEAL. Democrat News December 4, 1984: Rosa B. Neal, 92, of Alton, formerly of Jerseyville died at Eunice Smith nursing home in Alton. Born March 30, 1892 in Sangamon County to Ludwig and Ottile Garlow Beck. Married George C. Neal 9 October 1912 in Springfield. He died 2 May 1963. Leaves son, Clifford Neal of Jerseyville, Daughters, Lillian Blasa of Jerseyville and Edith Turner of Alton, brother, Elmer Beck of Rockchester; sister, Hattie Pickett of Virden; seven grandchildren. 17 great grandchildren. Burial in Vigal cemetery in New City. Rev. David Wilshek.
NEALY. Republican Examiner 16 October 1885: Richard Nealy, son of John Nealy, three miles west of town, died last Saturday and buried Sunday. Leaves a widow – daughter of Matt Darr.
NEELY. 3/11/1965: Mrs. Carrie E. Neely, widow of Herbert G. Neely, a former Jerseyville businessman, died at seven-fifty o’clock Tuesday. Morning at the Jersey Community Hospital. Her health had been impaired for some time. Friends may call at the Gubser Funeral Home until noon today (Thurs) and then at the First United Presbyterian church where services will be held at two o’clock. Rev. M. Edwards Breed will officiate and burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. The family has designated the building fund of the Presbyterian church as a memorial. Mrs. Neely, a daughter of the Late Joseph and Antoinette Vanhorne Powel, was born near Delhi June 4, 1886. She is survived by a son, Kenneth Neely of Riverside, California, a daughter, Mrs. N. Aubrey (Mary) Carson of Kirkwood, MO; three grandchildren, and two brothers, Spencer Powel of Fort Myers, Florida, and Andrew W. Powell of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mr. Neely died in 1952. As a very young girl, Mrs. Neely joined the First Presbyterian church in Jerseyville and at the time of death was a member of the Esther Bible Class of the church. She was a member and past Worthy Matron of the Jerseyville Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and she also held memberships in the Farm Bureau, the Jersey County Homemakers Extension Assoc., the Jerseyville Woman’s Club, Jersey Community Hospital Woman’s Auxiliary, and the Royal Neighbors of America Lodge.
NEELY. 2/7/85: Word has been received from Riverside, California of the death of Kenneth R. Neely, 75, on January 10. He was born in Jerseyville son of Herbert G. and Carrie Powel Neely and had been a resident of Riverside, California for over 40 years. Neely had been active in riverside in various music circles, the Masonic Order, Lions Club, and was the Elder of Calvary and United Presbyterian church. He is survived by his wife, Marion Patton Neely; a son, William, two granddaughters, Jessica and Juliana of Oakland, California; a sister, Mary Neely Carson of Kirkwood, MO., nieces , great nephews and cousins.
NEESE. Henry Harrison Neese, Sr., 73, died at 5:55 am Sunday, August 25, 1991 at home. He was a farmer in the Jersey County area and retired in 1982 as a laborer from Coach Marketing Co., of West Alton, MO. He was a member of the First Assembly of God church in Jerseyville. Born in Marion County, MO on January 20, 1918 he was the son of the Late Clarence and Frances (Chism) Neese. He married the former Gertrude Killbrew on October 26, 1940 in Bowling Green, MO. And she died on March 2, 1961. Surviving are three Daughters, Arlene Kaiman of Havan, Florida, Cheryl Betty of Chatham and Connie Frazier of Jerseyville; three sons, Henry Neese Jr of Smyrna, Tenn. Donald Neese of White Hall, and Gary Neese of Schwabach, Germany; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Visitation is from 6 to 9 pm Wednesday At Jacoby-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are at 10 am Thursday. The Rev. Paul Snow will officiate. Burial is in Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Assoc.
NEIKIRK. 2/26/1970: Final rites for George Gilmore Neikirk, 81, of this city were held Sunday afternoon at two o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where visitation hours were held after 4:00 pm Saturday. His death occurred early Friday morning in Jacksonville. Rev. William Smith, pastor of the Peace United Church of Christ, officiated at the services with interment in Oak Grove cemetery. A retired farmer, he was born July 4, 1888 in Lincoln County, MO, a son of the late Whorton and Viola Neikirk. His wife, Annie Neikirk, preceded him in death. His survivors are one son, George R. Neikirk of Jerseyville, three daughters, Mrs. Ruby Laird of Eolia, MO; Mrs. Viola Ferguson of Chicago; and Mrs. Linda Badgley of Rosewood Heights; 15 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; one brother, Andy Neikirk of Eolia; and one sister, Mrs. Ruby Colbert of Silex, MO.
NEIKIRK. 10-10-1975: Angela Susan Neikirk, 13, daughter of James L. and Donna Lane Neikirk, died at the scene of a car accident that occurred at 11:10 pm on April 4, 1.2 miles west of Jerseyville on route 16. She was born June 25, 1961 in Alton and was a student at Illini Junior High. In addition to her parents she is survived by three brothers, James, Douglas, and Greg Neikirk, and a sister, Pamela; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Thompson of Grafton, Mrs. Wilma Brown and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Lane of Alton. A funeral mass was celebrated Monday morning at St. Patrick’s church in Grafton with Father Patrick Morrow celebrant. Interment was in St. Francis Xavier cemetery in Jerseyville.
NEIKIRK. 11/3/1977: Funeral mass for John Gregory Neikirk, 13, son of James Neikirk and Mrs. Donna Neikirk both of rural Fieldon, was celebrated Wednesday Morning at St. Patrick’s church in Grafton with Father John Brahler celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery, Jerseyville. The youth was fatally injured in an accident a mile and a half west of Jerseyville on Route 16 Monday morning as he and his brother, Douglas, were on their way to school. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Jersey Community hospital at 8:25 am October 31. He was born June 7, 1964 in Alton, a son of James and Donna Lane Neikirk and was a student at Illini Junior High School. His survivors are his parents, two brothers, James and Doug, and a sister, Pamela, at home; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Wilma Brown of Alton and maternal grandparents, Ralph Lane of Alton and Mrs. Hattie Thompson, Grafton. The rosary was recited Tuesday Evening at Jacoby Brothers. Funeral home at Grafton.
NEIL. 1/26/1976: Services for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Neil, 84, of 5408 S. Broadway, St. Louis were held at 1:30 pm Tuesday Dec 28 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. L. E. Hutchinson officiating. Interment was in Kane cemetery. Her death occurred at 10:15 am on December 24 at the Althenheim Nursing Home in St. Louis. She was born October 25, 1892 in Taney County, MO, a daughter of Frank and Sarah Lawrence Shumate. Her husband, Frank Neil died in 1950. She is survived by one sister, Tina Parsons of Chicago; two brothers, John Shumate of Marionville, MO and William Shumate of Crane, MO; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Walter Raymond (Vera) Taylor of Jerseyville; four grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren. The family has designated the State Street Baptist Church BuildingFund as a memorial.
NELSON. Arthur Nelson, 74, well-known retired farmer of the Dow area, died Saturday evening at his home. He had suffered from a heart ailment for several years. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Final rites were held at the Salem Methodist church at Dow Tuesday afternoon, August 9, at two o’clock. Rev. Mr. Nelson was a son of the late William and Nellie Corzine Nelson and was born at Fidelity on July 11, 1886. His age at the time of death was seventy-four years and twenty five days. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Clara Nelson of Dow, two daughters, Mrs. Lloyd (Hazel) Stubblefield of Edwardsville and Mrs. James (Kathryn) Chronister of Hardin, four sons, Charles and Emmett Nelson of Alton, and Harry and Robert Nelson of Dow, thirteen grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Stella Noble of Wood River. Died 06-08-1960.
NELSON. March 26, 1947: Theodore A. Nelson, a retired business man of Jerseyville, died at two o’clock Wednesday afternoon, March 26, at his home 200 South Arch Street, following an illness of a few weeks’ duration. For many years Mr. Nelson followed the plastering trade in Jerseyville but he has been retired for some time. The deceased was the son of the late Conrad and Jennie McCann Nelson, and was born in Jerseyville January 7, 1875. His age at the time of death was seventy-two years, two months and nineteen days. Surviving Mr. Nelson are his wife, Mrs. Mabel Nelson of Jerseyville, one son, Winfred Nelson of St. Louis; two Brothers, Edward and Orlin S. Nelson of Jerseyville; one sister, Mrs. John French of Jerseyville and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist church in Jerseyville Saturday, March 29, at two-thirty o’clock. The Rev. Dale Harmon will officiated and interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery.
NELSON. 7/30/64: Postmaster Arch Nelson 418 South Cross Street, Jerseyville, died at eleven o’clock Saturday evening July 25 at the Methodist hospital in Houston, TX where he had been a surgical patient since June 24. Mr. Nelson had been making satisfactory recovery from surgery until he was stricken with a heart attack Saturday morning. His death which occurred about twelve hours later came as a shock to local friends who had expected him home this week. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville where Masonic services were conducted at eight o’clock Tuesday evening by the Jerseyville Lodge AF & AM in which he held membership. Rev. M. Edwards Breed officiated at services held at two o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the First Presbyterian church in Jerseyville. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr. Nelson the only son of Mrs. Maude Davison Nelson of Jerseyville and the late Karl T. Nelson, was born in Jerseyville. His age at the time of death was sixty-two years, one month, and twenty-one days. His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Mildred Aderton Nelson, who was with him at the hospital and his mother. In recognition of his contributions to civic and fraternal programs of Jerseyville the title of “Outstanding Senior Citizen of Jerseyville, 1964” was bestowed on Mr. Nelson by the Jerseyville Junior Chamber of Commerce Last February. He had only recently completed two years service as chairman of the Jersey County Chapter of the American Red Cross, and he was currently serving as Lions Club International Counselor, a past District Governor of Lions Clubs, Mr. Nelson is the only Jerseyville man ever to receive the appointment of International Counselor. NELSON. 02 May-1968: Mrs. Clara Nelson of Route One, Dow, died Wednesday morning, May 1, at 4 o’clock at the Memorial hospital in Alton where she had been a patient nine days. Funeral rites will be held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home Friday afternoon, May 3, at 1:30 o’clock with Rev. Thomas Thompson of Alton officiating, and burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Park. Visitation hours will be held at the Funeral Home after 2 pm, Thursday. In lieu of flowers the family has designated memorials to Christian foundations. Mrs. Nelson was a daughter of the late Charles F. W. and Ulrica Kappel Gerson and was born at Fieldon on August 16, 1893. Her age at the time of deaths was 74 years, 8 months, and 15 days. Surviving Mrs. Nelson are three sons, Charles of Godfrey, Harry of Alton and Robert Nelson of Dow, two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Stubblefield of Edwardsville and Mrs. Kathryn Chronister of Dow, one step son, Emmett Nelson of Alton, one Brother, C. A. Gerson of Carrollton, two sisters, Mrs. Alvena Gwinner of Alton and Mrs. Harold Croxford of Grafton, nineteen grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. NELSON. 16 November 1967: services for Harry Lavern (Buck) Nelson, retired Jerseyville businessman, were held Saturday afternoon at two o’clock at the First Baptist church with the Rev. Carlton Christenson officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. The death of Mr. Nelson occurred Thursday, November 9 at 10:20 am at the Jersey Community Hospital where he had been a patient nine days. His health had been impaired the past several months. Mr. Nelson was a son of the Late Edward and Mary Louise French Nelson and was born in Jerseyville June 30, 1902. His age at death was 65 years, 4 months and 9 days. In early life Mr. Nelson was engaged in construction work Nelson Bros. owned by his father and uncle, the late Ed and K. T. Nelson. In 1935 Mr. Nelson and his wife purchased the Vogue Shoppe in this city which they operated for twenty-one years. He purchased Nelson Bros. which he continued to operate until his retirement in 1964 when he sold the business to Clay East Redi Mix. Surviving Mr. Nelson are his wife, Mrs. Cecile M. Nelson, one sister, Mrs. Dorothy Coultas of Jacksonville, a nephew, Edward Coultas of Chicago, and a niece Joetta Heyen who made her home with Mr. & Mrs. Nelson. (A picture is included with obit.)
NELSON. 04-Jun-1979: the funeral of Amy Louise Nelson, 10, daughter of Harry and Doris Gerson Nelson of R. 1, Dow, was conducted Friday afternoon at the First Baptist church, Jerseyville. The Rev. Clay Noah officiated and burial was in Valhalla Memorial park. Amy was born December 30, 1968 in Alton and had attended Dow school. She died at 4:10 pm May 29 at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Besides her parents she is survived by a brother, Fran, at home; and maternal grandmother, Bessie Gerson of Wood River. Memorials are the First Baptist church and the Children’s United Research Effort at the St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
NELSON. 09-May-1948: Mrs. Nellie Nelson, mother of Arthur Nelson of Dow, died at ten o’clock Sunday night, May 9, at Memorial hospital in Alton where she had been a patient for the past three weeks. Mrs. Nelson was born in Fidelity, January 7, 1862 the daughter of the late David Wilson and Fredrica Schaeffer Corzine. At the time of her death she was aged eighty-six years, four months and twenty two days. In addition to her son, Mrs. Nelson is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Lawrence Noble of Alton. The body was brought to the Gubser Funeral Home where services were held Wednesday, May 12, at two-thirty o’clock. The Rev. Harry E. Nease of Grafton officiated and interment was in the Valhalla Memorial park.
NELSON. 22-Jul 1980: The funeral of James J. Nelson, 78 of 513 E. Pearl St., Jerseyville was held Saturday Morning at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Father William Hembrow officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He died at 6:45 pm July 16 at Jersey Community Hospital. The retired lineman from CIPS was born June 26, 1902 in Olney, a son of Elijah and Maltildia Bullard Nelson. His wife, the former Hettie Wade, died November 18, 1966. His survivors are a step-daughter, Kathleen Linenfelser of California; two sisters and two step-grandsons.

NELSON. 21 February 1952: Mrs. Florine Lurton Nelson, a native of Jersey County, died Wednesday, February 13 at 5:20 pm at her home in Hayward, California, following an extended period of ill health. Word of her death was received in Jerseyville Thursday by her aunt, Miss Ruth Noble. Mrs. Nelson was the daughter of the late John and Olivia Noble Lurton, members of well-known Jersey County families, and was born near Salem church in the Dow community. She was fifty nine years old. Mrs. Nelson spent her early life in Jersey County and although she had resided in California for about thirty years, she had made annual trips to Jerseyville to visit with relatives. The decedent is survived by her husband, Irving Nelson and a daughter, Mrs. Paul Garner, of Hayward, California, and one brother, Noble Lurton of Utah. Mrs. Nelson was a niece of Jay Noble of the Jerseyville vicinity. Funeral services were held Saturday Afternoon, February 16 at the Sorenson Bros. Mortuary in Hayward and entombment was in the mausoleum there.
NELSON. 24 January 1985: Services for Frank A. Nelson, 18, son of Harry and Doris Gerson Nelson, were conducted at the First Baptist church Tuesday by the Rev. V. Clay Noah with burial at Valhalla Memorial park in Godfrey. He died at 5:50 am January 19 at Barnes hospital in St. Louis after a long illness. He was born March 16, 1966 in Alton and was a member of the First Baptist church. He is survived by his parents and fiance, Martha Franz. He was preceded in death by a sister. NELSON. May 1956: Orlin S. Nelson, Jerseyville plasterer and construction worker, died at six-ten o’clock Tuesday Evening, May 15, at John Cochran Veterans hospital in St. Louis where he had been a patient for four days. Mr. Nelson suffered a stroke of paralysis at his home in this city on Sunday, May 6, and was taken to the Jersey Community Hospital where he remained as a patient until his removal to the Veterans’ hospital. The decedent was a son of the Late Conrad and Jennie McCann Nelson, and was born in Jerseyville, February 11, 1894. His age at the time of death was sixty-two years, three months, and four days. He was a veteran of World War I. Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lillie Goedelmann Nelson; one son, Orlin S. Nelson, Jr. of the United States Navy, at Millington, Tenn. NELSON. april, 1914: Mrs. Jennie Melissa Nelson, nee McCann, was called to her reward Friday at 12:30 pm attaining an age of 61 years, 7 months and 9 days. She was born near Otterville in this county September 15, 1853, and in her girlhood affiliated with the Baptist church. Having bloomed into womanhood she married Conrad Nelson March 11, 1873 to which happy and congenial union eight children were born. Rev. J. R. Reynolds conducted the funeral services at the family home Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, interment taking place in the Oak Grove cemetery. Those cherishing her memory are the husband, six Sons, Theodore, Edwin, Carl, Charley, Frank and Orlin; two daughters, Mrs. Wm. Monk and Mrs. John W. French (one son Gussie, and one daughter, Mrs. Dora Hasty preceded her in death); eight grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Keele of Pawnee, Illinois and Mrs. Josephine Dewitt of Lamar, Colo.; two brothers, John and George McCann, and a host of other relatives and friends. Decedent will be remembered as an affectionate wife, mother, and grandmother, good neighbor, a willing worker to assist the sick and poor and was held in the highest esteem to all who made her acquaintance.

NESBET. Jerseyville Republican. 31 October 1918: Mrs. Nellie Allen Nesbet, formerly of Jerseyville, died of flu October 22, in St. Louis at age of 47 years. Mrs. Nesbet was a daughter of Henry Allen who wrote for the Jerseyville Republican when it was owned by Bol. Wm. H. Edgar. Mrs. Lou Allen, the mother, is living at present between St. Louis and Lincoln, Illinois. Mrs. Nesbet was an accomplished musician and well known concert pianist. She studied for a number of years in Leipzig and Berlin. For the past 20 years she taught music in St. Louis. The body was brought to Jerseyville Friday morning and taken to Oak Grove cemetery for interment. Where the Rev. F. O. Wilson officiated at the services. Mrs. Nellie B. Porter, Miss Lillie Houghlin, Dr. J. G. Schwartz and P. M. Hamilton Sang. George M. Seago, W. P. Richards, H. S. Daniels, P. M Hamilton, J. R. Fulkerson, schoolmates of Mrs. Nesbet acted as pallbearers.
NISBET. Jersey County Democrat, October 1918: Mrs. Nellie Allen-Nisbet died in St. Louis. Daughter of Mrs. Lou Allen of Lincoln, Illinois formerly of Jerseyville who for many years taught in the schools of this city. Mrs. allen and her daughter, Mrs. Marie Allen Mayfield, of New Orleans who had been visiting in Lincoln were with Mrs. Nisbet at time of her death. Remains taken to Oak Grove cemetery for burial. Rev. F. O. Wilson. Pallbearers Were: Geo. M. Seago, W. P. Richards, H. S. Daniels, P. M. Hamilton, Dr. J. G. Schwarz and J. R. Fulkerson, all of whom were in school at the same time Mrs. Nisbet was a student here. Mrs. Nisbet was a well known concert pianist.
NESLER. Feb 1950: Mr. and Mrs. Carl Beiermann and son of Jerseyville, Mrs. Tony Krueger of Kansas, Charles Schlansker of Fieldon, and Lt. Forrest Schlansker of Scott Field motored to Bridgeport, Sunday to attend the funeral of Mr. Schlansker’s brother-in-law, Albert Nesler, held at the First Christian church at two o’clock. The death of Mr. Nesler occurred Thursday, February 2, at the Olney hospital as the result of injuries sustained on Saturday Jan. 28, when his truck was struck by a train. The decedent is survived by his wife, the former Miss Ada Schlansker of Grafton, and eight children. Mrs. Beiermann and Mrs. Krueger are nieces of Mrs. Nesler.

Feb 1950: Mrs. Mathilda Amelia Nestler, a former resident of Jersey County, died Tuesday Jan 24 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Irene Watson in El Monte, California, where she had resided for about four years. She had been in failing health for about a year and a half. The body of the deceased was taken to Macomb Saturday Where funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, January 29 at one-thirty o’clock at the Dodsworth-Piper Funeral Home. The Rev. Leslie Whitcomb officiated and interment was in the Oakwood cemetery. Mrs. Watson accompanied the body to Macomb. Mrs. Nestler was a daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. August Krause and was born in Fieldon, March 30, 1876. She was married to Harry Nestler in 1897 and lived in Jerseyville for several years after her marriage. She moved to Macomb in 1918. The death of her husband occurred in 1941. The deceased was a member of the Evangelical church. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Watson and Mrs. Ruth Gloyd of Macomb, two brothers, August…..rest of obit missing.

NESLER. 8 November 1961: Mrs. Ada Nesler, 79, died at Lawrenceville hospital. Born in Rosedale township, Jersey County, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Schlansker. Member of Christian Church in Bridgeport. A son, five daughters and step daughter live in bridgeport. Also leaves sons, Ross Nesler of East Alton and Richard Nesler of Kendall Hills, three sisters, Mrs. Mary Pivoda of Godfrey, Clara Shelton of Granite City and Mrs. Ruth Johnson of Jerseyville, brother, John V. Schlansker of Alton. Burial in Bridgeport cemetery.
NEUMEYER. 1914: Mrs. Annie Neumeyer, whose demise and funeral was briefly mentioned in last week’s Republican, was born in Ostfriesland, Hannover, Germany July 23, 1851 to Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Seehausen. When only 5 years old, the family left their native country and immigrated to America, settling down on a farm west of Jerseyville. Here the subject of this sketch spent the sunny mornings of life and having bloomed into womanhood was married to Charles Neumeyer at Fieldon in January, 1872. To this happy congenial union two children were born, one son dying in infancy, and one daughter, Mrs. Fred Schmidt. A sad visitation was the death of the husband and father on April 26, 1899, and since that time the widow managed her worldly affairs in a circumspect and business like manner which reflects very favorably on her ability, and at the same time she did not neglect the salvation of her soul. She was one of the pillars of the German Evangelical church and for more than three decades served the Ladies’ Aid Society as a highly efficient president and had always a tender heart and an open hand for those in distress. The poor and needy are deprived of a guardian angel and good samaritan. Mrs. neumeyer attained an age of 63 years, 10 months and 22 days and is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Fred Schmidt; two Granddaughters, Misses Marguerite and Anna Schmidt; one brother, Henry Seehausen of Fieldon; one sister, Mrs. Henry Schmidt of Tecumseh, Neb., and a host of more distant relatives and friends who will cherish her memory. Those from a distance attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Arkebauer of Mt. Olive, Il; Mrs. Hester Harms of Lebanon, Il; Mrs. Jos. P. NEVIUS. 13 June 1957: Mrs. Nellie B. Nevius of Route Two Jerseyville died Friday evening, June 7 at nine-fifty o’clock at the Jersey Community Hospital where she had been a patient for the past month. She was the widow of O. Ray Nevius. The decedent was a daughter of the late Christopher and Margaret A. Baird Nevius and was born in Jersey County on November 5, 1895. Her age at the time of death was sixty one years, seven months and two days. Mrs. Nevius is survived by one brother, Edward Nevius of Jerseyville, and four step daughters, Mrs. John Piggott of Phoenix, Ariz, Mrs. Roy Bryant of Alton, Mrs. E. O. Schwarz of Urbana and Mrs. Raymond Highfill of Wood River. Friends called at Jacoby brothers Funeral Home. Final rites were held at the Funeral Home Monday morning June 10 at ten o’clock. Rev. M. Edwards Breed, pastor of the First Presbyterian church officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.
NEVIUS. Undated clipping: Mrs. Malinda Nevius, a venerable and highly respected lady of Jerseyville, entered the last peaceful sleep Friday at 3:30 pm at the blessed age of 82 years, 4 months and 18 days. She was a native of the state of New Jersey and came in her girlhood to our county where she married Peter Striker Nevius a well known wagon maker who had attained great popularity and whose wagons were generally used in this section of the state. Six children, three sons and three daughters were born to the happy union, all with the exception of two sons, preceding the mother in death. About 23 years ago the husband was called to his reward. In recent years Mrs. Nevius made her home with Mrs. Gussie L. Howell where she received the best and most tender care and became intimately attached to the members of her family. Since September 1914 a steady decline in health & vigor attributed to old age, set in which culminated in death. Rev. W. S. Neely conducted the funeral services at the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, interment being made in Oak Grove cemetery. Two sons, John Nevius of Jerseyville and Chist. Nevius, residing five miles northeast of Jerseyville, two grandchildren and a host of more distant relatives and friends are left to cherish her memory. Decedent had merited the esteem of all who knew her, was possessed of a kind and jolly disposition and well known as a loving mother and grandmother and also a splendid housekeeper. Died 00-00-1914.

NEVIUS. Jersey County Democrat January 1891: Died at his home Peter Stryker Nevius 75 years. Funeral from home. Rev. Leeper serving. Born in Somerset County, New Jersey November 11, 1815. Father died when he was 8 years old. He came to Jerseyville in 1838. Has been one of the city’s best citizens. Was a student of the bible. Married November 17 1853 Melinda Van Dyne.
NEVLIN. 2-Jan-1979: Services for Claude Leroy Nevlin, 87, of 1009 W. Exchange St., Jerseyville were conducted Sunday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home by Rev. Harry Frazer. Burial was in Fieldon cemetery. His death occurred at 6:50 pm Dec. 28 at Alton Memorial hospital. He was born in Jersey County May 1, 1891, a son of John and Anna Seehausen Nevlin and had farmed. Nevlin was a World War I veteran. His survivors are a son, Robert Nevlin of Jerseyville, one daughter, Dorothy Rister, Alton; nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Geneva Thurston who died January 13 1968; parents, three brothers and a sister.
NEVLIN. 13 September 1973: Jerseyville – John William “Bill” Nevlin, 66, of 1009 W. Exchange St., Jerseyville, died at 7:28 pm Monday at Jersey Community Hospital, Jerseyville. He worked as a farm laborer in Jerseyville. Surviving is his brother, Roy of Jerseyville. Friends May call after 4 pm Wednesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 pm Thursday. Burial will be in Fieldon cemetery.
NEWBERRY. 1 October 1964: John Newberry, a native of Jersey County, died recently at Naugatuck, Conn. And final rites were held there. He was in his 90th year. His survivors are a sister, Mrs. Agnes Humiston of Otterville, a daughter, Mrs. George N. Stuart and two grandchildren, all of Pittsburgh, PA. Mr. Newberry, a retired Olin Industries employee, had lived nearly all of his adult life in Alton. His wife died in Alton in 1961.
NEWBERRY. Jun 1984: Kenneth Newberry of Bend, Ore., formerly of this area, died unexpectedly on June 20 from an apparent heart attack. He was born February 14 1934 in Jersey County to the late Fred and Emma Newberry. The US Army veteran was a heavy equipment operator. His survivors are six children, Kevin, Steve, Jeff, Danny, Mark and Cindy, all of this area; one brother, Robert Newberry of Wood River; two sister, Della Newberry of Godfrey and Doris Noble of Dow. NEWBERRY. 08 July 1980: Services for Fred Newberry, 81 a farmer of R 1 Godfrey were conducted Saturday afternoon from Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with burial in Grimes cemetery. He died at 8:55 am July 2 at Garnets Chateau. His wife, the former Emma Martin, died December 1, 1976. Born February 17, 1899 in Jersey County, he was a son of Hamilton and Della Mowen Newberry. His survivors are two sons, Robert Newberry of Wood River and Kenneth Newberry of Teneno, Washington; two daughters, Doris Noble of Dow; a sister, Geraldine Gaddy of Alton; 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His parents, wife, two daughters, a brother and two sisters preceded him in death. The Presbyterian church has been named as a memorial.
NEWBERRY. Jerseyville Republican. 17 December 1903: Mrs. Electa Lewis Newberry was born and reared in NY state near Poughkeepsie, April 26, 1810. Married Rev. Henry Newberry, 5 October 1831. 8 children. Four sons, four daughters, 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren. In 1834 come to Jersey County At that time it was a wild county; no churches but religious services were held in their homes until Mr. Newberry helped to build the church building that was at the old Union cemetery and the one at Otterville. He preached at placed widely separated giving time and strength to the lord. Dr. Avery once said in speaking of this man “he was one of the old war-horses of the Baptist church.” In later years of his life he wrote a chronology of the scriptures. She died at home of her daughter, Mrs. Geo. Dutton in St. Louis. 93 years. Funeral by Dr. Ford of the Baptist church – Union cemetery, 4 miles south of Jerseyville.

Seago of Granite City, one sister, Mrs. Edward McVay of Hendrick, Iowa, two brothers, Coe Edsall of Michigan City, Indiana, and C. P. Edsall of Brighton, Illinois. Five grandchildren.
NEWBERRY. 17 December 1948: A large crowd of relatives and friends attended the memorial services which were held recently at the Baptist church in Jerseyville for the late Corporal Harold Newberry who was killed in action on Anzio beach-head February 7, 1944. The casket-bearers at the rites were Harold Hurry, Estel Hinson, Paul Clark, Adrian Painter, Quentin Meletti and Rudy Meletti. The floral pieces were carried by nieces of the deceased, Nellie and Ilda Bethel, and Shirly Gaddy, Doris Newberry, Rita Moake, Gene Wells, Diana Meletti, Ruby Parker, Maurine Ford and Grace Gillis. Mrs. S. Jackson Rice served as accompanist for the singers, Mrs. Pearl Johnson and Mrs. Carl Haushalter. Corporal Newberry was the son of Mrs. Nellye Newberry Meletti and the late Jesse Newberry. He was born in Otterville, July 16, 1919, where he lived as a child and received his early schooling. Later with his parents and only sister, Eileen, he moved to Plainview where he completed his elementary education. After that he was graduated from the Shipman high school and then engaged in farming with his father until his induction into service. He served with the Quartermaster Corps of the Fifth Army and went overseas in August, 1943. The soldier is survived by his mother, Mrs. Meletti; his step father, Julius Meletti; one sister, Mrs. Eileen Kech; his grandfather, Hamilton Newberry of Otterville; his grandmother, Mrs. Emma Aldridge and two nieces. NEWCOMB. 30 July 1981: Rebecca Newcomb, 94 died at the Four Fountains Convalescent Center in Belleville after more than six years illness. Miss Newcomb taught English and French at Jersey Township High School over 25 years. She is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Newcomb and Florence Degarmo of St. Louis and nephews. NEWINGHAM. Betty Lou Newingham, 50, died Tuesday, February 6, 1990 at Barnes hospital in St. Louis. Born in Carrollton, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Kathryn (Wyatt) Holmes. She married Charles Dennis Newingham on March 4, 1959, in Carrollton, and he survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Angie Pruitt of Jerseyville, a Son, Mike Newingham of Eldred; four grandchildren; two sister, Anita Taylor of Jerseyville and Brenda Gilbert of Eldred; and three brothers, James Holmes of Jerseyville and Kirby and Zachary Holmes, both of Carrollton. Visitation is from 4 to 9 pm Thursday At Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville where services are at 1 pm Friday with Rev. Joy Settles officiating. NEWINGHAM. Charles Newingham, 50, died at 3:28 am Thursday, February 20 1992 at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. A US Navy veteran, he retired in 1979 as an auto body technician with the Union Auto Body Shop in Godfrey. Born in Roodhouse on March 27, 1941, he was a son of Lucy (Herron) Newingham Miller of White Hall and the late Lyman Newingham. He and the former Betty Holmes were married March 4, 1959 in Carrollton. She died February 6, 1990. Surviving in addition to his mother are a son, Mike Newingham of Eldred; a daughter, Angie Pruitt of Jerseyville; five grandchildren; a sister, Sheila Collins of White Hall; and four brothers, Gary Newingham of Jerseyville, Dean Newingham of Rochester, Bill Newingham of Jacksonville and Tom Newingham of Nowalk, Ohio. A brother, Larry Newingham, preceded him in death. Visitation is from 4 to 9 pm today at Jacoby-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are at 10 am Saturday. The Rev. NEWMAN. 17 November 1981: services for William Earl Newman, 46, of 114 W. Arch, Jerseyville, were conducted Wednesday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home by the Rev. Wayne Pendleton. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He died at 5:50 am 9 November at Christian Northeast, St. Louis after a lengthy illness. A truck driver, he was born September 23, 1935 a son of William and Beulah Frazer Newman. He is survived by two sisters, Evelyn Woolsey of Jerseyville and Lena R. Alvarez of Joliet.
NEWMAN. 26 February 1976: Final rites for William Walter “Walt” Newman, 76, of RR 3 Jerseyville were held on February 24 at Jacoby Funeral Home with the Rev. Thurman Strange officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. A farm laborer he was born on 20 December 1899 in Morganfield, KY. His death occurred at 10 pm on February 21 at his home. He is survived by a son, William Newman of Jerseyville; two daughters, Mrs. Alfonso (Lena Ruth) Alverez of Joliet and Mrs. William “Pete” (Evelyn) Woolsey of Jerseyville.
NEWMAN. George Newman, 63, died at 7:30 pm Sunday Aug. 23, 1987 at the Jerseyville care center. He was the son of the late George and Elvie Newman. He is survived by cousins. Graveside services will be conducted at 10 am Wednesday at Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville by the Rev. Mike Michels. Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home of Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements.
NEWTON. Word was received Sunday by Jerseyville relatives of the death of Col. Henry Newton of Providence, R. I. He died Saturday, Oct. 12, at the age of 83 years, after an illness of a few months. Col. Newton was a brother of the late Robert Newton of Jerseyville. He had visited here frequently and had made many friends who will be sorry to hear of his death. Col. Newton held the office of Captain in the Infantry during the Civil War and was appointed Colonel when he became a member of the governors staff. The funeral and burial were held Tuesday, Oct. 15.

The self-employed roofer was the son of Ruth (Delp) Moore of Bowling Green, KY and the late Bobby Jean Newton. In addition to his mother, surviving are his wife, Sandy Newton of Urbana; a son, Joshua Newton of Jerseyville; a daughter, Pamela Newton of Urbana; his stepfather, Gene Moore of Bowling Green; two sisters, Shirley Roundcount of Jerseyville and Kathy Newton of Bowling Green; four Brothers, Jimmy, Gordon, and Artie Newton All of Brownsville, KY and David Newton of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; and maternal grandmother Beulah Fryman of Jerseyville. Visitation is 4-9 pm Thursday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be conducted 11 am Friday. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville.
NEYLON. 9 January 1958: Mrs. Mono McDow Neylon of St. Louis, a native of Elsah, died at seven-twenty o’clock on New Year’s Day in Christian hospital where she had been a patient for a week after becoming ill on Christmas. Funeral services were held at the Calvin Feutz Funeral Home in St. Louis Saturday Afternoon at one o’clock and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery in St. Louis. Mrs. Neylon was a member of the Shite Shrine of Jerusalem and Order of Easter Stars and ritual services were conducted by these organizations at the Funeral Home on Friday night. The decedent, widow of Edward P. Neylon, was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Willaim H. McDow of Elsah, and was born December 6, 1884. Her death occurred twenty-five days after her seventy fourth birthday anniversary. The former Elsah resident is survived by a son, Edwin; a daughter, Isabel, both of St. Louis; two brothers, Dewey McDow of Elsah and William McDow of Godfrey and two sisters, Miss Lucy McDow of Elsah and Mrs. Gertrude Eard of Alton.
NICCUM. Tuesday, September 6, 1983: A Jerseyville man, Crossing N. State Street at the White Spot, was fatally injured at 6:29 am Monday, September 12. The fatality was Jerseyville’s first pedestrian fatality since May 30, 1980. James L. Niccum, 55, 600 N. Liberty St., Jerseyville, a resident at Stark Shelter Care, was taken to Jersey Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:06 am. According to the police report Niccum was crossing the street at the White Spot behind a southbound auto, and walked into the path of a northbound auto. Driver of the car was 22 year old Donna S. Day, of 126 W. Independence St., Jacksonville. No charges were filed. According to Jersey County coroner, Paul Schroeder, Niccum, who was from Effingham is survived by a brother and cousins. He had resided at Stark’s since 1968. His body will be moved to the Johnson and Son Funeral Home in Effingham.
NICKELS. 7 February 1985: Leslie E. Nickels, 66, of Crocker, MO, formerly of Jerseyville died January 30 at the Pulaski County Hospital in Waynesville, MO. Nichels was former owner-operator of the Sinclair Service Station in Jerseyville and retired in 1978 from Olin Corp. After 36 years service. He was a World War II Marine Corps veteran. Born 13 September 1918 in Pulaski County, MO, he was a son of Celia Jackson Nickels of Jerseyville and the Late Quincy L. Nickels and was a member of the Otterville Baptist church. His survivors include his wife, the former Mary Fryman whom he married 21 September 1939; mother; four daughters, Barbara Ontis, Crocker, MO; Janet Freand, Jerseyville; Martha and Anita Nickels of Jacksonville; one son Gerald Nickels, Godfrey; 10 grandchildren, one great-grandson. Also surviving are five sisters, Anna Ferree, Vero Beach, Florida; Elva Carlson, Quincy; Fern McClary, Godfrey; Iris Romine, Lemont, IL; Vinita McClary, Richland, MO; one brother, Aubrey Nickels Atlanta, GA. He was preceded in death by one son, Leslie David Nickels, who died 8 Aug 1966 in Vietnam, and a brother, Q. Lloyd Nickels. Services were held Saturday at Gubser Funeral Home with the Revs. James Endsley and Raymond McClary officiating. American Legion Post 492 conducted military graveside rites at Valhalla Memorial Park. The American Cancer Society has been named as a memorial.
NICHOLAS. May, 1951: Mrs. Bertha Nicholas, a former resident of Jerseyville, died May 2 at the Illinois Masonic Home in Sullivan, IL, where she had resided for the past year and a half. Mrs. Nicholas was born in Jersey County, 16 July 1877, a daughter of the Late Jacob F. and Anna Bacon Corzine, and her age at the time of death was seventy three years, nine months and sixteen days. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Charles Eastham of Decatur and two brothers, Murray and W. H. Corzine of Jerseyville. The body was brought to Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville where funeral services will be held at two o’clock Friday afternoon, May 4. Rev. Laverne Poole, pastor of the Baptist church, will officiate and entombment will be in Oak Grove mausoleum.

NIEBRUGGE. May, 1983: the Rev. Richard William Niebrugge, 48, of St. Mary’s Catholic church in Fieldon was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon in the emergency room at Jersey Community Hospital. He was ordained on 25 May, 1962. He attended the seminary at St. Henry’s in Belleville. He formerly served St. Mary’s and SS. Peter and Paul both in Alton and St. Patrick’s at Grafton. He was born in Effingham son of the late Anthony and Anna Aulenbrock Niebrugge. Surviving are six brothers, Paul and Alphonse, both of Effingham, Lawrence and Anthony both of Effingham County, Ambrose of Dietrich, and Rev. Herman Niebrugge of Mattoon; and four sisters, Martha Muehlenfeld of Blue Water, Florida, Johanna Spracklen of Selbyville, sister Agatha Niebrugge of Breese and Delores Stockman of Effingham. Visitation will be 5 to 9 pm today at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Fieldon. A prayer service will be read at 7 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated there Saturday At 10 am. NIEDRINGHAUS. 30 October 1985: Leah E. Niedringhaus, 71, of Jennings, MO., formerly of Jerseyville, died at 12:50 pm October 2 at Christian Hospital Northeast. She was born in Jerseyville, daughter of the late Roy and Bertha (Lirchner) Myers. Her husband, Henry Niedringhaus, preceded her in death. She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone for many years, and is survived by nieces and nephews. Visitation was at Math Hermann & Sons Funeral Home, 10212 Halls Ferry Road, N. St. Louis County, where services were conducted. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. NIEMEYER. Grafton: – Juanita F. Niemeyer, 89, died at 12:48 pm Friday December 6 1991 at home. Born in Fieldon on 25 July 1902, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Rhoda (Miller) Rowden. She married Charles Niemeyer in Alton on 24 December 1923. Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Charlotte Albert of Brighton and Norma J. Wallace of Grafton; six grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; a great-great granddaughter; three Sisters, Stella Yeakley of Albuquerque, NM., Alice Crivello of Liberty, MO; and Bertha Siebert of Alton; and three brothers, Frank, Harold, and Stanley Rowden, all of Alton. Preceding her in death were two sisters, Lydia Bowers and Thelma Moore; and three brothers, Claude, and Leslie Rowden, and an infant brother. Visitation will continue from 10 am Monday until service time at 11 am at the Grafton Methodist church, with the Rev. Ray Long officiating. Burial is in Scenic Hill cemetery in Grafton. Memorials may be given to the church or Wood River Township Hospital Hospice Program.
NIHELL. 1911: Lucinda A. Colwell born 22 February 1839. Married Miller Nihell, 29 March 1849 in Montgomery County, Illinois. 7 children. All but 3 died. Husband died 16 Mar. 1888. She was 81 years old. Leaves one daughter and two sons, nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren. She was a pensioner of the US of America, her husband having served in Co. K, First Regiment Us Dragoons in war with Mexico. Last widow of the Mexican war living in Jerseyville where she had lived for 50 years. Rev. Markham. Oak grove cemetery.
NITSCHKE. 15 March 1973: Final rites were held in Hattiesburg, Miss., for Frank Nitschke who died at the Methodist hospital there on February 24th. Burial was in the Oaklawn cemetery. Masonic rites were conducted. Born 30 Aug 1895 in Jerseyville, he was the son of the Late Paul J. and Anna C. Nitschke. When sixteen he went to Montana and at twenty years of age, volunteered in the US Cavalry. He was honorably discharged in 1919 as a Second Lieutenant. Mr. Nitschke returned to Jerseyville where he worked for his father in the meat market. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. His first Wife, Velma Arledge, preceded him in death. In Hattiesburg Mr. Nitschke became associated with G. M. Kennedy in the Sanitary Meat Market which he purchased in May, 1923. He sold the business in 1936 due to illness and spent two years in the V. A. Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia. His survivors are his wife, Ruth, stepson, Jimmy Church of Houston, Texas; three sisters, Mrs. Louise Belt of Alton, Mrs. Jo Newman of Oregon and Mrs. Catherine Griffiths of St. Petersburg, FL and a Brother, Paul C. Nitschke of Encinitas, California.
NITSCHKE. 5 April 1978: Paul C. Nitschke, formerly of Jerseyville, died 8 April in Encinitas, California Where funeral mass was celebrated at St. John’s Catholic church. He was buried April 14 in Fort Schnelling Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minn. He was the son of the late Paul J. and Anna Nitschke and had worked for his father in a meat market in Jerseyville. He was a World War II veteran. Nitschke moved to Minneapolis, Minn. where he worked in a large meat packing company, living there until 1952. Later Nitschke was in a wheel chair for over 20 years and had suffered several heart attacks. His survivors are his wife, Lucille, a son, Curtis, by a former marriage; one grandson; three sisters, Mrs. Louise Belt of Alton, Mrs. Josephine Newman of Oregon, and Mrs. Catherine Griffith of Florida.

NOBLE. 1896: Mrs. Anna Henderson departed for McGregor, Iowa Sunday evening to attend funeral of her brother-in-law, Judge Reuben Noble, a former citizen of Jersey County who was three times elected Judge of his district and at one time representative in the legislature of his state. Funeral on Tuesday. Was leading attorney for Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul RR.
NOBLE. Jersey County Democrat February 6, 1890: judge Caleb Noble was born in Adams County, Mississippi, July 28, 1817 and died at his home near Otterville last Thursday, aged 72 years. At the age of 23 he married S. Electa Gillham, daughter of Ezekial Gillham. Soon after his marriage he moved to the farm on which he died. In 1850 his first wife died. Oct. 1 1851 he married Susannah L. Buckles, daughter of John and Nancy Buckles of this county. This wife died in February, 1854 and in August 1858, he married Ruth Cadwalader, daughter of John Cadwalader. In 1869 he was elected Associate Judge of this county and gave good satisfaction in that position. He was a man of genial character and peaceful disposition. He took an active part in politics and was often elected Democratic Central Committeeman from Otter Creek township. Funeral held Saturday was largely attended as he had a large number of friends throughout the county.
NOBLE. Jersey County Democrat. 28 July 1887: Wm. Noble died at home in Otterville. 59 years July 20. Born in Adams County, MS. When 6 years old came to this county. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Noble his parents. They lived in Otter Creek township 1833 until their deaths. He in 1850. She in 1852. He married Thirza Chappel on 4 March 1849. Six children: Israel C., Emma M., Wife of Theodore Dodson, William H., Milton B., James R. and Jesse C. Presbyterian church. Funeral from church in Otterville. Rev. R. D. Miller. NOBLE. 29 November 1956: Funeral services were held at the Gubser Funeral Home at two o’clock on Friday afternoon, November 23 for Miss Ruth Noble of Jerseyville whose death occurred at the Waters Nursing Home in this city Wednesday, November 21. The Rev. Earl Dickey, pastor of the Methodist church officiated at the services and interment was in the Otterville cemetery. The decedent was born in Jersey County, September 9, 1881 a daughter of the late Caleb and Ruth Cadwallader Noble. Her age at the time of death was seventy-five years, two months, and twelve days. Miss Noble was preceded in death by her parents, and nine brothers and sisters. Her immediate survivors are nieces and nephews.
NOBLE. 28 October 1965: Mrs. John G. Flautt of Jerseyville received a telephone message Sunday evening informing her of the death of Wesley L. Noble, a native of Jersey County, which occurred that morning at Helena, Arkansas. Funeral services and burial took place Tuesday morning at ten-thirty o’clock in Hamburg, Arkansas. Mr. Noble, a son of Milton B. and Leonora Doughery Noble was born at Otterville April 10, 1881. His survivors are his wife; three daughters; three brothers and five sisters, including Mrs. Clifford Rogers of Orlando, Florida. He was a cousin of Leslie Dougherty of Otterville and Mrs. Marcus J. Ryan of Jerseyville. Leverett Noble of Cambridge, a brother of Mrs. Noble is a patient in the hospital at Genesco where he was taken last Friday for treatment of injuries incurred when he fell from a horse. The Cambridge man suffered fractures of four ribs and a punctured lung.

NOBLE. Mrs. Thirza Noble died at Otterville, IL, Tuesday, February 21, 1899 at 11:20 am, aged 70 years, and four months. Funeral services will be held in the church at Otterville, Thursday, at 2 o’clock pm with Rev. R. D. Miller of Petersburg officiating. Mrs. Noble was born in Devonshire, England, October 21, 1828. For some time past she has been making her home with Mrs. Theo. Dodson of this city.
NOBLE. 11-Feb 1960: Clarence Noble, a retired farmer of rural route, Grafton, died at nine-twenty o’clock Saturday Night, February 6 at Memorial hospital in Alton where he had been a patient the past two and one-half months. Funeral services were held at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon, February 9, at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. Harold Y. Slaten of Steeleville, Illinois officiating. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park. Mr. Noble was a life-long resident of Jersey County. He was born in Quarry township, September 20, 1875, a son of the late Isaac N. and Ida Jane Ellis Noble. His age at the time of death was eight-four years, four months, and sixteen days. The decedent is survived by his wife, Mrs. Addie Allen Noble; one daughter, Mrs. Douglas Hake of Elsah; one son, Tyrus Noble of Shipman; one sister, Miss May Noble of Jerseyville; one brother, Lawrence Noble of Wood River; and five grandchildren. Mr. Noble was a charter member of the Jersey Co. Farm Bureau and had served as a director of the Farm Supply and Farm Bureau. He was also a member of the Grafton Camp of Modern Woodmen of America.
NOBLE. 21 July 1960: Funeral services were held last Thursday afternoon, July 14 at Marks Mortuary in Wood River for Lawrence D. Noble of that city. Brother of Miss May Noble, Jerseyville business woman. Rev. Edwin Grant, pastor of the First Methodist church officiated, and interment was in Valhalla Memorial Park. Mr. Noble was pronounced dead on arrival at Wood River township hospital on Tuesday, at 6:10 pm. He was seventy-three years old. The decedent was born at Grafton on 19 April 1887. He was married to the former Miss Stella Nelson in Edwardsville on September 9, 1917. He had formerly resided in Jerseyville but for many years had been a resident of Alton. The family moved to Wood River two years ago. Mr. Noble was a well-known musician and a former long time employee of Standard Oil Company. In 1948 he was presented a gold emblem for an outstanding continuous service record with the oil company. After his retirement Mr. Noble had continued to work as a piano technician. He had played in the Standard Oil Band at the Wood River refinery and in the Old Temple Threatre Orchestra in Alton. Surviving him in addition to his wife and sister of Jerseyville, are one daughter, Mrs. John B. Harris of Alton and one grandson.
NOBLE. 12 January 1967: Levrette Noble of Cambridge, Illinois, native of Jersey County, died Sunday, January 8 in Geneseo. Funeral services were held at the Stackhouse Funeral Home in Cambridge on Wednesday and burial was in the Veterans’ section of the Genesco cemetery. Mr. Noble was a son of the late Milton B. and Leonora I. Noble, and was born near Otterville December 19, 1887. And spent most of his life in Illinois. His wife preceded him in death September 15, 1965. Mr. Noble was a son and veteran of World War I. His survivors are brothers and sisters, Ross, Nellie and Finis Noble who reside in Michigan, Mrs. Earl H. Schroeder, Mrs. Alfred J. Dutch, Mrs. Donald D. Burkhart and Mrs. E. Clifford Rogers, residents of Florida.

Louis Purcell, pastor of the First Methodist church in Jerseyville, conducted funeral rites Monday morning at 10:00 o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home for Mrs. Addie Noble of Grafton whose death occurred at 4:40 Thursday afternoon at Garnets Chateau in Jerseyville. Her age at time of death was eighty-two years, six months, and twenty-two days. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park. Born 27 November 1886 in Jersey County she was the daughter of Marion Otto and Maria Cresswell Allen. Mrs. Noble was a member of the Grafton Royal Neighbors and the Salem Methodist church. Her survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Zelma Hake of Elsah; one son, Tyrus Noble of Shipman; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Lena Wallace of Jerseyville. Visitation hours were held at the Funeral Home. Mrs. Noble was the widow of Clarence Noble.
NOBLE. Jay M. Noble of the Otterville vicinity, a member of a well-known Jersey County family, died Saturday morning December 6 at three-forty o’clock at St. Anthony’s infirmary in Alton where he had been removed the previous day. He had been in failing health for some time. Mr. Noble was a son of the late Caleb and Ruth Cadwalder Noble and was born in Jersey County on January 20, 1876. His age at the time of death was seventy-six years, ten months and sixteen days. The decedent had been a resident of Jersey County all of his life and was engaged in farming. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jessie Noble, one daughter, Miss Melba Noble of Jerseyville and one sister, Miss Ruth Noble of Jerseyville. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon, December 9 at two o’clock. Rev. Laverne S. Poole, pastor of the Baptist church, officiated at the rites and burial was in the Oak Grove cemetery.

NOBLE. Jersey County News. 20 October 1927: Funeral held in Presbyterian church in Otterville by Rev. H. S. Arrill of Jerseyville for Milton B. Noble, former Jersey County resident, who died 13 Oct. in University Hospital, Ann Arbor, Michigan of general peritonitis. Burial in Noble cemetery of Otterville. He was 68 years old. Body sent to Jerseyville. Taken to Jacoby chapel and later to Otterville. Mr. Noble was born in Otterville, this county, married to Minnie Lee Dougherty of Otterville who together with ten children survive him. They moved to Hillsboro, North Dakota. Where he bought a farm about nineteen years ago, when he sold and bought a farm near Saline, Michigan. While the direct cause of his death was peritonitis, Mr. Noble had suffered for nearly a year from an infection of one of his toes, caused by frostbite. An operation was advised and the member amputated ten days before he death occurred. Surviving children are: Wesley, Ross, Nellie, Leaverette, Finis, Mrs. Alma L. Dyer, Miss Jeanette Noble, D. Noble, Mrs. Carl M. Feiner and Mrs. Donald Berkhart. One sister and two brothers also survive. They are Mrs. Emma S. Dodson of Jerseyville and I. C. and J. R. Noble of Alton. NOBLE. 25 April 1957 and 02 May 1957: Word was received here last week of the death of Leslie Noble, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Doc Noble, who resided on a farm near Otterville. Leslie lived here as a boy. His death occurred last Tuesday. Mr. Noble was a brother of Miss Gussie Noble of Alton and Mrs. Lela Kennedy. He was a nephew of Cyrus Sisson who formerly resided on the farm now occupied by Mrs. Tessie Spangle and son.
NOBLE. 02 May 1957: Leslie Sisson Noble, 71, a native of Otterville, died unexpectedly in Chattanooga, Tenn. Private funeral services were held Tuesday morning, April 23, at Morrow-Quinn mortuary in Alton and interment was in the Upper Alton cemetery. Mr. Noble was a son of the Late I. C. and Emma Noble and was born 26 October 1885 at Otterville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Ethel Hamilton Noble, in 1949. The decedent is survived by three children, Mrs. R. E. Robinson, Arkadelphia, Ark., Dr. Robert H. Noble, Norwalk, Conn., and John S. Noble, White Plains, NY and two sisters, Mrs. Lela Cannaday of Sedalia, MO and Miss Augusta L. Noble of Alton, and seven grandchildren.
NOBLE. 1 October 1964: Funeral services were held at the College Avenue Presbyterian church in Alton Friday for Miss Augusta L. Noble of Alton whose death occurred on Wednesday at the home of a niece, Mrs. Undrill Renshaw in Sedalia, MO, where she had been making her home. Miss Noble was born in Jersey County 15 January, 1882 a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Israel Noble. Early in life she moved to Alton with her parents where she attended Shurtleff College. During her residency in Alton she was a longtime member of the College Avenue Presbyterian church where she had been a sunday school teacher for years. She was also a member of the Upper Alton Woman’s Club. Miss Noble was the last member of her immediate family, and her survivors are nieces and nephews.

Undated: Christian Science services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon for Mrs. Mary Margaret Noble., a former resident of this city, whose death occurred Sunday at Peace Haven Home in Kirkwood. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. A daughter of the late Charles N. and Effie Duhadway Noble, pioneer residents of Jersey County, the decedent acclaimed fame in music circles. Her career included roles in the municipal opera in the 1920s, a church soloist, a staff artist on radio station KMOX, prima donna with the Lyric Musical Comedy Company of Canada and other companies, and most recently soloist in the winter concerts of the Missouri Athletic Club. She possessed a lyric soprano voice. For the greater part of her life Mrs. Noble resided at 467 Alma Avenue, Webster Groves, MO. She is survived by a son, Navy Lt. Dan Noble of the Naval Supply Center, Bayonne, New Jersey.

The death of Miss Noble occurred Tuesday afternoon, June 27, at 1:35 o’clock at the Eunice Smith home in Alton where she had resided for the past six weeks. Miss Noble’s home was at 107 East Carpenter, this city. She was a daughter of the late Newton and Ida Ellis Noble and was born in Jersey County on 22 June 1884. She had marked her 83rd birthday this month. For many years Miss Noble was engaged in the restaurant business in Jerseyville and with the late William Khlantzos they operated the b/b in this city. Surviving her are a nephew, Tyrus Noble of Shipman and two nieces, Mrs. Zelma Hake of Elsah and Mrs. John B. Harris of Alton.
NOBLE. 30 September 1965: Word was received here last week of the death of Mrs. Levrette Noble 71, of Cambridge, Illinois which occurred 15 September in Hammond-Henry hospital in Genesco where she had been a patient for twelve days. Her husband is the son of the late Milton B. and Leonora I. Noble and was born in Jersey County where he grew to manhood. Services were held Friday afternoon in the Stackhouse Funeral Home in Cambridge with Rev. John H. Clark of Knoxville and Rev. Harold Hedden pastor of the Cambridge Methodist church, officiating. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery, Genesco. Mrs. Noble was the Former Maude E. Atwell and was born 8 July 1894 in Atkinson. She was married to Levrette Noble on 3 Aug. 1921 in Atkinson. Surviving her in addition to her husband are one sister, Mrs. Barney Charlet of Cambridge, three brothers, Frank of Rock Falls, and Howard and Ben Atwell of Atkinson. Two brothers preceded her in death.

Jersey County News 22 December 1932: Jerseyville relatives received word Monday of the death of Isaac Carlyle Noble, native Jerseyan which occurred Monday morning December 19 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. E. Cannaday at Sedalia, MO where he had been the last year. An invalid for nearly ten years and helpless a greater part of that time, the death is said to have resulted from a severe cold which he contacted recently. He was the son of Wm. and Thirza Chappell Noble and was born near Otterville on 19 May, 1859. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. J. E. Cannaday of Sedalia, Miss Gussie Noble of Alton, one Son, L .S. Noble of Alton, one sister, Mrs. Emma Dodson of Jerseyville and one brother, James Noble of Jerseyville. Mr. Noble is also a brother-in-law of Miss Jessie Can Cyrus Sisson, Mrs. Albert Lamb and Mrs. Dora Noble of this city. The body of Mr. Noble arrived in Alton Tuesday and was taken directly to Oakwood cemetery where a burial service was conducted at 2:30 o’clock pm by Rev. John N. Morrison, pastor of the College Avenue Presbyterian church in Alton.

NOLAN. October, 1981: A funeral mass was celebrated at St. Michael’s Catholic church at Beltrees for Randolph F. Nolan, 64, of R 2, Godfrey who died at 11:05 pm September 28 at St. Joseph’s hospital, Alton. A farmer, he was born in Jersey County, a son of the late Anthony L. and Barbara Federle Nolan. He was a World War II Army veteran. His survivors are his wife, the former Theresa E. Fessler; two sisters, Anna Rieger of Godfrey and Clara Hooper of Dow. The rosary was recited Wednesday evening at gent Funeral Home. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park.
NOLAN. 1987: Leo Francis Nolan, 60, of Jerseyville, died March 11 at his residence. He was born June 4, 1926 in Jersey County to the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Fessler) Nolan. He was a maintenance man for Laclede Steel. He was a member of St. Michael’s church in Beltrees and Jerseyville Moose Lodge. Survivors include sisters Josephine of Alton and Freida Grady of Grafton, and brothers Herman and Edgar, both of Alton and Jim of Dow. Visitation was March 13 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville; the funeral mass was March 14 at St. Michael’s with the Rev. Patrick Carroll officiating. Burial was in St. Michael’s cemetery. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery. He died at 1 pm on 15 April at Christian hospital. He was born June 15, 1906 in Cheyenne, Wyo. To the late Dennis and Blanche Laseur Nolan. His survivors are his wife, the former Ramona Modlin whom he married 16 February 1966 in Jerseyville; sons, Jack Nolan of Eldred and Terry Gray of Hazel Crest; daughters Roberta Pyatt, Alton, Amanda Frey, St. Charles, MO and Debbie Cheek, Jacksonville; sisters, Mary Mohatt, Cheyenne, Wyo. and Gladys McDermott, Billings, Mont.; 10 grandchildren , four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Lois Mourning; a son, Mike, four brothers and a sister. The rosary was recited at Jacoby Funeral Home. NORDENBROCK. 26 October 1978: Services and burial for Mrs. Imo Nordenbrock 74, of Dallas, Tex., a native of Jerseyville, were held Wednesday in Dallas. She died at 9:30 pm 23 October at the Presbyterian hospital in Dallas. Her parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. John Rogers. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ann Eagen, Dallas and Mrs. Betty Sullivan, Austin, Tex., eight grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Wahl of Jerseyville and three brothers, Clifford Rogers of Lakeland, Florida, formerly of Jerseyville; George and William Rogers of Alton. Her husband, Dr. Greg Nordenbrock preceded her in death.
NORDENBROCK. 27 April 1951: Dr. Gregory J. Nordenbrock husband of Mrs. Imo Rogers Nordenbrock, died unexpectedly Friday night, April 20, at his home in Dallas, Texas. In addition to his wife Dr. Nordenbrock is survived by two Daughters, Ann and Betty Nordenbrock of Dallas, and several brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held Tuesday Morning in Dallas and burial was in that city. Mrs. Harold Wahle of the Jerseyville vicinity, Mrs. Alto Campbell of Upper Alton and George Rogers of Alton, sisters and brothers of Mrs. Nordenbrock went to Dallas to attend the final rites.
NORRIS. Miss Anna Norris, 18 years of age, was instantly killed at eight-thirty o’clock Saturday evening in Jerseyville when an automobile in which she was riding collided with a horse and spring wagon driven by James Waters and Harvey Munde. The two young men are not residents of Jerseyville, but have been employed by Richard Voorhees, a farmer in Jersey County. Miss Norris was riding with her fiance, Russell Campbell, and was on her way to Whitehall where she and Campbell were to have been married Sunday afternoon. They were going to the home of Campbell’s cousin, where the marriage ceremony was to have been performed. A heavy misty rain was falling that evening and Campbell’s vision through the windshield was blurred so that he could not see the approaching horse and rig. The ordinances of the city of Jerseyville do not compel the owner of a rig to have lights, and it was impossible for Campbell to see the wagon. The horse was picked up by the front of Campbell’s automobile and thrown on top of the car, the weight of the animal crushing the windshield, which caused the fracture of Miss Norris’ skull just above the nose. Campbell escaped with only minor injuries, but he was rendered unconscious for several minutes. After regaining consciousness Campbell picked the girl up in his arms and carried her into the home of Mrs. Elizabeth Voorhees, where medical aid was summoned, but to no avail. The occupants of the wagon were thrown from the right, but neither was injured. The horse was severely cut and bruised and three shoes were torn from its feet. Campbell was taken from the scene of the accident to the home of his aunt in Jerseyville where he is said to be in a critical nervous condition. The coroner’s inquest was conducted by Dr. B. M. Brewster of Fieldon, Sunday morning and the jury returned a verdict of death caused by a fractured skull. Miss Norris was the daughter of Mrs. Henry Shults, of Jerseyville, and she made her home with her mother and stepfather in the northeast part of the city. The engagement of Miss Norris and Campbell was known by her family and friends, but her immediate family was not aware of the fact that the girl had left home that evening for Whitehall, where she was to have been married the following day. Miss Norris was an employee of the International Shoe Company in Jerseyville and just a few ours preceding her death she had completed payment on furniture for her new home. She is survived by a sister, Miss Christine Norris, her mother, step-father and a half brother. Campbell and four Companions, Anthony Vahle, Edward Krueger, Leslie Bridges and Leo Tuchy, all of Jerseyville, have spent the summer in North Dakota in the harvest fields and Campbell and Vahle returned to Jerseyville only a few days before the accident. Campbell was 21 years of age and was the son of the late Charles Campbell, a prominent farmer of English township, Jersey County. The death of Miss Norris is the third in the Shults family within less than six months. In April, Mr. and Mrs. Shults lost twin daughters, nine months of age. Their deaths were due to pneumonia. The funeral of Miss Norris will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the Baptist church of which she was a member. Rev. Joseph Jenkins will officiate and the interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery beside the Shults twins, half sisters of the deceased. The automobile accident Saturday night is the first in Jersey County that has resulted in a fatality, a record that probable surpasses every other county in the state of Illinois.
NORRIS. 7 February 1952: Funeral services were held at St. Peter and Paul’s church in Alton Saturday morning, February 2, at ten-thirty o’clock for Mrs. Sophia Norris whose death occurred Thursday morning, January 31, at six o’clock at the Conrad nursing home in Alton. Burial was in the Melville cemetery. Mrs. Norris was born in Jersey County on 13 March 1863. She was married to captain Richard Norris, who preceded her in death some years ago, as did a son, Fred Johndrow. She had made her home at the Loretto home in Alton for the past twenty-five years. Six months ago Mrs. Norris, who was eighty-eight years old, became ill and was moved to St. Anthony’s infirmary and when she recovered sufficiently returned to the home. Later she was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital and then to the Conrad nursing home where her death occurred. The aged woman is survived by a brother, William Sherman, of Godfrey and nieces and nephews.

Licensed to preach at Jerseyville Baptist church 20 June 1886 and ordained at Paradise Baptist church. From her to Tullula and later to Mason City. Went to Michigan Then to Baltimore, Maryland. Belonged to Knights of Pythias and Modern Woodman of America. Rev. Wm. Norris died on 27 May at Laurel, Maryland. Remains brought home for burial. Funeral from his mother’s home. 31 years old. Wife and son survive, aged mother also. Born in this city and entered ministry from Shurtleff School of Theology. As a preacher of the word, he was faithful, conscientious and successful. Rev. W. H. Kearns and G. W. Shephard officiated at funeral conducted by the Woodmen. Born in Jerseyville April 18, 1866. Married in Jacksonville to Miss Emma Bell, 24 December 1884. Licensed to preach by Jerseyville Baptist church 30 June 1886 and ordained at Paradise Baptist church which he was afterwards pastor. From here to Tullula and later to Mason City. His health failing he went to Albion, Michigan and from there to Baltimore, Maryland. Was asked to supply church at Laurel, 19 miles from Baltimore. Given call for full time and he accepted. Old church destroyed by fire, new one buildt but because of illness of pastor, it was never dedicated.
NORRIS. 25 November 1971: Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Otto-Argo Funeral Home in Eureka for Guy Norris, 73 of Congerville, a former resident of Jerseyville. His death occurred at 10:55 am on November 19 in the Eureka hospital where he had been a patient since September 2nd. Rev. Robt. Taylor officiated at the rites and interment was in Mt. Zion cemetery in Deer Creek. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Nail and Mrs. Charles Stanley of Jerseyville and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Aderton of Hardin attended the services. He was born 11 July 1898 in Newkirk, Oklahoma, the son of Lyman and Harriett Barnes Norris. Mr. Norris married the Former Beulah Waters December 22, 1921 in Jerseyville where the couple resided for several years. Mr. Norris was owner of the Deer Creek Telephone Company from 1943-70. A World War I veteran, he was a member of the Deer Creek American Legion Post. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Richard, of Congerville, and a daughter, Mrs. Betty Jeanne Fairchild ofAtlanta, Ga., eight grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. W. J. Musselman of Lexington, Mr. W. J. Magirl of Bloomington and Mrs. E. P. Russell of Laurel, Miss.
NORRIS. June 1962: M. G. (Coach) Norris, retired Jerseyville teacher and businessman, died Tuesday, June 12 at 12:20 pm at the Jersey community hospital where he had been a patient for nine days. Friends may call at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home after 4 pm today (thurs) and Masonic rites will be held at the home this evening at 8 o’clock. Final rites will be held at the Funeral Home Friday afternoon, June 15, at two o’clock with Rev. Mode Powell, Jr., pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr. Norris, a resident of Jerseyville for about forty years, was familiarly known as “coach” having been athletic coach at the former Jersey Township High School for about five years when the family moved to Jerseyville. Before coming to Jerseyville, Mr. Norris taught in Edwardsville from 1915 to 1919. Upon retiring from the teaching profession Mr. Norris entered the business field and opened a tire shop on north State Street. About thirty-two years ago the business was expanded and moved to its present location on south State Street. Mr. Norris retired from active business in1948 when he suffered a heart ailment. Mr. Norris was active in civic affairs and had been affiliated with the Chamber of Commerce. He was a charter member of the Jerseyville Lions Club and in 1946 served as its second Vice-president. Fraternally he was a member of Jerseyville Lodge No. 394 AF & AM and the Shriners. A son of the late Charles C. and Elizabeth Fryer Norris, the decedent was born 9 March 1894 at Pendleton, KY. His age at the time of death was sixty-eight years, three months, and three days. He was married on December 23 1917 to Miss Lydia Weber of Edwardsville who survives him. Other survivors are his son, James M. Norris of this city associated in business with him, one daughter, Mrs. James (Charlene) Wedding of Godfrey, one brother, H. C. Norris of Falmouth, KY and five grandchildren.
NORRIS. July 1897: Johnson Norris was born in New Paris, Prebble County, Ohio, 1831 on July 4th. 65 years old. Was second child of Thomas and Sarah Norris. His parents came to the state of Illinois while he was young. Father died when Johnson was 12 years old. Left a poor boy with mother, five sisters and one brother to assist in providing. Baptized by Rev. Justus Bulkey. Lost his membership in church on account of an unscriptural rule which the church enacted requiring all members to attend a certain number of Saturday meetings. He was engaged in work that would not allow him quit on Saturday. In those days some churches did some foolish things. Johnson Norris never gave up his religion. He was quiet, industrious, kind-hearted. On December 13, 1854, married Sarah Hansell. Three children. Addie, daughter died of consumption. Today his son, Rev. W. T. Norris, is in feeble health in Baltimore. Mrs. Emma Wilcox, daughter has been with her father in all his sicknesses. Pastor Porter.

NORRIS. 4 April 1968: Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville Monday afternoon for Mrs. Rosie Edith Norris of Kane. Rev. Jack Brown of Kane officiated and burial was in the Kane cemetery. The death of Mrs. Norris occurred at two-thirty o’clock Saturday morning at Boyd Memorial hospital in Carrollton where she had been a patient for three days. Mrs. Norris, a daughter of the late Charles and Kathleen Schrieber Springman, was born in Jersey County, and her age at the time of death was sixty four years, two months, and twenty-nine days. Her survivors are one son, Carroll E. Norris of Fieldon; one daughter, Mrs. Tracy Ziegler of Kane; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two Brothers, Lawrence and Laverne Springman, both of Jerseyville and one sister, Mrs. Lawrence Schroeder of Jerseyville.
NORRIS. 1922: Mrs. Sarah Norris, pioneer and oldest woman in Jersey County passed away Thursday morning July 27 at 6:03 o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emma Wilcox on West Pearl Street. Mrs. Norris was born February 16, 1832, in New Hope, Pennsylvania and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hansell, Quakers and Members of the Society of Friends. Mrs. Norris resided in New Hope until 1840 when with her parents she came by water to Alton, walking from Alton to Jerseyville where the Hansell family located. Mrs. Norris died in the house in which her parents lived when they moved to Jerseyville, and it is known as the oldest house in the county. Mrs. Norris was the fifth girl in a family of seven children and was the last survivor. A brother, Lewellyn Hansell, died during the civil war, and a sister, Mrs. Rebecca Hutchinson, for many years a resident of Jerseyville, lived to be 96 years of age. Mrs. Norris was the mother of three children. Mrs. Emma Wilcox with whom she made her home being the only survivor. Mrs. Norris was well known among all the residents of Jerseyville and was familiarly known as “Aunt Sarah”. Mrs. Norris had voted only once in her life, and that was many years ago during a heated school election in Jerseyville. She is probably the only woman in the county who had never had a ride in an automobile, not because opportunities were lacking, but because she didn’t feel safe in a machine, being afraid from accidents due to careless driving. Mrs. Norris had a remarkably bright mind for a woman of her age and kept in an ever-responsive memory, people, events, dates, customs and changes identified with the life of the town through eight decades. During the past few years she had knitted hundreds of yards of lace for household linens and even within the past week of her life had produced lace for household linens despite the sweltering heat of the July summer. Besides her daughter, Mrs. Wilcox, with whom she made her home, Mrs. Norris leaves two grandsons, Kenneth and H. Russel Merril, the former of whom was at her bedside when she passed away. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist church, Sunday afternoon at 3 0’clock the Rev. R. B. Favoright assisted by the Rev. Joseph Jenkins officiating. The Royal Neighbors will meet in the basement of the church at 2 O’clock and will have charge of services at the grave. Interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery.
NORRIS. Jerseyville Republican, 1922: Mrs. Sarah Norris, one of the pioneer women of Jersey County died at her home in Jerseyville Thursday morning at three minutes after six o’clock. At the time of her departure she was ninety years, five months and eleven days of age. Mrs. Norris was born in New Hope, Pennsylvania, the Sixteenth of February 1832. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hansell. The Hansells were members of the Quakers of Pennsylvania. When Mrs. Norris was eight years old she came with her parents to Jersey County. The trip was made by water as far as Alton and from that place the trip was made overland by wagon. The father had come to Jersey County in 1837 and built the house in which the family was to reside before he returned east for his family and brought them back the next year. Mrs. Norris death occurred in the same house constructed by her father. She was the fifth child in a family of seven children and was the last survivor. Mrs. Norris was the mother of three children, Mrs. Emma Wilcox with whom she resided at the time of her death being the last of her family. Mrs. Norris for her age was very active and her mental faculties were especially alert. She took a keen interest in all the affairs of the day and read without glasses. She was a great worker and the week before her death she was busy fashioning lace for the household linen. She produced many yards of lace every year for such work. Mrs. Norris saw the development of Jersey County from the primeval. When she first came to Jerseyville as a little girl the wild country frightened her and she cried to go back to her eastern home. To see deer was a frequent occurrence in the vicinity of her new home. There was never any scarcity of food, wild game was plentiful. Deer were abundant as were wild ducks, geese, and prairie chickens. There were also an abundance of wild fruits. Mrs. Norris remembered when the Indians were still frequent passers through this section of the county. Her death is a loss to the community. The distant past is no longer linked with the present by her memory of by gone days. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Baptist church at 3:00 o’clock , the Rev. Favoright assisted by Rev. Jos. Jenkins officiating. The interment took place in Oak Grove cemetery and the Royal Neighbors of Jerseyville had charge of the services at the grave.
NORTON. 25 July 1974: Funeral services were held Saturday morning July 20 at the holy trinity church in Bloomington for Mrs. Loretta Norton, 77, of Bloomington. Her death occurred on July 18 at her home 1510 E. Jackson. Interment was in the holy cross cemetery. Mrs. Norton was born August 4, 1896 in Jerseyville a daughter of John and Mary Gibbons Walsh. Mrs. Norton was a member of the Holy Trinity Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Sigma Kappa Mothers Club. She is survived by her husband, John J. Norton; a son, John E., 1510 E. Jackson; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Frances Cunningham, Peoria; a brother, Matthew Walsh, Jerseyville; two sisters, Mrs. Herman Schafer and Mrs. Ernest Ferenbach, both of Jerseyville; seven grandchildren. A sister preceded her in death.
NORTON. 14 October 1980: Bernard Patrick Norton, 67, of 205 S. Arch St., Jerseyville, owner-manager of Norton’s Hardware, was pronounced dead at the scene of a tractor accident at his farm on Grange Hall and Crystal Lake roads east of Jerseyville at 1:30 pm October 12 by Jersey County coroner Paul Schroeder. Norton was trying to cut down a dead tree, pushing against it with a tractor mounted with loader to keep the tree from falling on a fence. When the tree gave way, it flipped the tractor over pinning Norton underneath. Richard Darr who was working with Norton was unable to release him. Another tractor was brought to the scene and used to release the victim. He was born 18 March 1913 in Jersey County, a son of Edward J. and Frances Maxiner Norton. Norton was a member of the Holy Ghost Church and a past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, the former Hilda Wagenblast whom he married 9 February 1938; a son and a daughter, Gerald Norton of Jerseyville and Gail Lane of Alton; two brothers, Edmund C. Norton of Alton and Leland Norton of Sullivan; two sisters, Edith Brands of Grafton and Elizabeth Young of Mascoutah and two granddaughters. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Tuesday At Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where the rosary will be recited at 7:30. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am Wednesday at Holy Ghost church with Father William Hembrow celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s cemetery in Alton. Leaves wife, and ten children and three brothers, John and Thomas Norton of La, California, Wm. Norton of Oakland, California; two sisters, Mrs. Phillip Reader of Oakland, California and Mrs. Anthony Rice of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral from home in Brighton.
NORTON. 1946: William Newton Norton of Jerseyville died at three o’clock Tuesday morning, February 25, at his home 404 E. Spruce St. following an extended illness. The deceased was the son of the late James H. and Mary Ann Anderson Norton, and was born in Troy, MO, 3 May, 1879. His age at the time of death was sixty-seven years, nine months and twenty-two days. Mr. Norton is survived by his wife, Mrs. Fl— M. Norton; one daughter, Mrs. Mary O. Waters of Grafton; one step-daughter Mrs. Martha E. Isringhausen of Jerseyville; one sister, Mrs. Anna E. Bohmer of Davis, MO. And two grandsons. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers chapel Thursday Feb 27 at two-thirty o’clock. The Rev. Arthur A. Vinz officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.
NOTHEIS. Nov 1954: Frank A. Notheis a former resident of Grafton, died 30 October in Barnes hospital in St. Louis according to word received here by Mrs. Joseph Sheridan. He had been in failing health for two years and was hospitalized for a year. Mr. Notheis had resided in Grafton for several years before entering the hospital. He had been a patient in St. Joseph hospital in Alton for three months and at Barnes hospital in St. Louis for nine months. His wife had been staying in St. Louis at the home of a son, Frank, to be near her husband while he was in the hospital. Surviving Mr. Notheis in addition to his wife and son, Frank, are another son, Walter of St. Louis and three grandchildren. Mr. Notheis was a former resident of Beaver, Wisconsin and the body was sent to Beaver for interment in the Notheis family lot.
NOTT. 15 March 1973: final services for Miss Laura P. Nott, 88, of 308 north state street, Jerseyville, were held Friday afternoon at Gubser Funeral Home with Rev. Everett Chambers of First Baptist church officiating. Her death occurred at 1:45 pm on March 7 at Calhoun Comprehensive Care Center. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. A retired seamstress, she was born in Kansas 1 Feb, 1885, a daughter of Samuel and Ida Dodson Nott. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Olive Keehner and Miss Susan B. Nott of Jerseyville; and nephews. Her parents and a sister, Nora May Eyman, preceded her in death. The First Baptist church was designated as a memorial.
NOTT. 19 May 1977: Susan B. Nott, 87, of 308 N. State St., Jerseyville, a retired school teacher, died at 9:50 am on May 30 at Garnets Chateau. She was born 28 Aug. 1889, a daughter of Samuel and Ida Dodson Nott. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Olive Keehner of Jerseyville and one nephew, Paul F. Keehner of Paris, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 pm Tuesday(today) at Gubser Funeral Home. The funeral will be conducted from Gubser Funeral Home at 2 pm on June 1 by the Rev. Everett Chambers. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery.
NOVOTNY. 5 June 1984: Funeral mass was celebrated for Joseph Novotny, 90, of R 1 Jerseyville who died 18 May at 1:48 pm at Jersey Community Hospital. Father Patrick Morrow officiated. He was born 14 May 1894 in Jersey County to the late Frank and Josephine Macha Novotny and was a farmer. He is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Malik of Jerseyville, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery. Masses and the heart fund were suggested as memorials. NOVOTNY. 15 November 1984: Mary Ann Novotny, 94, of Route 1, died at 9:20 am Wednesday at her residence after a lengthy illness. Born in Jersey County a daughter of the late James and Brigid (McGee) Fitzgibbons, on April 18, 1922 in Brighton she married Frank Novotny. He preceded her in death on 1 November 1969. Survivors include six daughters, Josephine Roth of Jerseyville, Frances and Lillian Novotny, who both resided at the family residence, Helen Manns of Godfrey, Ann Carter of Wood River and Kathryn Weiner of Jerseyville; a son, George of Jerseyville; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. There will be no visitation. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 am Friday at St. Alphonsus Catholic church in Brighton with the Rev. William R. Maul as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s cemetery in Godfrey. Marquette high school has been named as a memorial. Gent Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Father Francis Lee will be celebrant of a requiem mass at 9:30 o’clock this (tuesday) morning at St. Francis Xavier church for John Novotny, 79, who died Sunday morning at 2:15 at the Jersey Community Hospital. Interment will be in the St. Francis Xavier cemetery. Mr. Novotny was born December 27 1889 in Jersey County, the son of Frank and Josephine Machova Novotny. He had been engaged in farming. He is survived by two sisters, Miss Anna Novotny and Mrs. Elizabeth Malik of Jerseyville, and two brothers, Frank and Joseph Novotny, also of Jerseyville. Visitation hours were held at the Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home after 2:00 Monday afternoon. The rosary was recited at 7:30 that evening.
NOVOTNY. Grafton: Nelson Novotny 59, died at 8:53 pm Friday September 9, 1988 at St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton, following a lengthy illness. Born in St. Louis, he was the son of Ethel (Desherlia) Novotny and the late Charles J. Novotny. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carlotte Ann Novotny. Visitation will be 5-9 pm Monday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville with a prayer service at 7 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10:30 am Tuesday At St. Patrick’s Catholic church in Grafton, with Rev. Patrick Carroll as celebrant. Grafton Legion Post #648 where Novotny was manager and a member, will conduct military graveside rites in Hartford cemetery in Grafton.
NOVOTNY. 24 September 1979: Funeral mass was celebrated Monday morning at St. Patrick’s church in Grafton for Charles J. “Red” Novotny, 71, of 619 S. main, Grafton with Father Neibrugge celebrant. Burial was in the Hartford cemetery, Grafton. He died at 4:45 pm 21 September at St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton after an extended illness. Born 14 April 1908 in St. Louis, a son of the late Joseph and Frances Stibal Novotny. He was retired from Anheuser-Busch, Inc. St. Louis, where he was a beer bottler for 35 years. His survivors are his wife, the former Ethel Desherlia; one son, Nelson of Grafton; a brother, Joseph Novotny of St. Louis; a sister, Josephine Kelly of St. Louis; three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, two brothers and one sister. The rosary was recited Sunday evening at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home at Grafton.

NOWLIN. 19 June 1975: Mrs. John Prosser of Jerseyville has received word of the death of Jack Nowlin of Lake Jackson, Texas on May 14. He was a nephew of Lyman Gowling. Nowlin who was reared in Jerseyville, had attended the 40th anniversary reunion of the 1934 class of the Jersey township high school held here last year. He is survived by his widow, Electa; two children, Jack Franklin of Lake Jackson and Mrs. Cherrie Baker of Anchorage, Alaska; and his mother, Mrs. Louella Nowlin of Lake Jackson.

Moved to Jefferson County, Ohio where he married Margaret Jan Eccles. Ten children. Four survive him. One son in Kentucky and one daughter in West Virginia. Son and daughter in Grafton, Illinois. Cast his first vote for Andrew Jackson. Joined Christian Church in Washington County, Ohio. ME church in this area.
NUTT. Jerseyville Republican 17 February 1893: Richard Nutt died after lingering illness. Native of new Jersey. 54 years old. Funeral from family home on Spruce St. Leaves widow and one daughter. Born in Mendham, Morris County, New Jersey 10 January 1839. Came to Jersey County in 1856.
NUTT. Republican Examiner. May 1889: Mr. Isaac Nutt, brother of late James Nutt and Mrs. Abram Remer of Jerseyville. Died at home in Springfield and buried Wednesday. This is the fourth death in the family of Richard Nutt of this city, within the past three weeks. His brother Joseph dying at Jacksonville, a week ago, a week following his father-in-law, Judge Lowe, the next week his uncle, Abram Remer and now his father’s brother.
NUTT. Jerseyville Republican. 25 February 1904: Mrs. Lydia Allen Nutt born in Delaware, Warren County, New Jersey; aug 16 1818. June 30, 1836 married James Nutt in Menden, Morris County, New Jersey. Eight children: Richard A., William J., George, Joseph, Emmia Jane, Maria Elizabeth – James and Eddie died in infancy. Husband died October 1886. She made her home with daughter, Mrs. Adam Christopher until 27 April 1902. Also with son, William J. Nutt. 85 years of age.
