POGUE. Nov 1916: Judge Harrison Warren Pogue, one of the best known men in Jersey County, died at his home in Jersey County Tuesday morning, 21 Nov.
POGUE. Republican Examiner 30 September 1887: Wm. H. Pogue born in Philadelphia, 23 December 1836, and graduated Pennington Seminary, came west and located at Alton, thence to Jerseyville. As a lawyer he was conscientious and faithful to his clients. Funeral from Presbyterian church. Rev. Ira C. Tyson. Judge Herdman, out of respect to the memory of Judge Pogue, adjourned circuit court and he and court officers attended the last rites in a body. Pallbearers: T. S. Chapman, A. Snedeker, J. Pike, J. I. McCready, J. M. Page, A. A. Goodrich, A. M. Slaten and P. D. Cheney. Obit #2 Jersey County Democrat 29 September 1887: Hon William H. Pogue died at home 2 September 1887. Funeral from Presbyterian church. Rev. I. C. Tyson. Pallbearers: Prof. Pike, P. D. Cheney, J. I. McCready, O. A. Snedeker, A. M. Slaten, A. A. Goodrich, T. S. Chapman and J. M. Page. Born in Philadelphia, Penn. on 23rd of December 1836, son of Joseph and Jane Know (Nee Cooper) Pogue, the former native of Ireland, who came to America in 1812. POGUE. Jerseyville Republican 9 September 1926: Mrs. Mary A. Pogue died at home, 87 years old. Daughter of George E. and Harriet Warren Pogue. Born on a farm near Jerseyville. Leaves one daughter, Miss Harriet Pogue; son, George B. Pogue of Mt. Vernon, New York, son Judge H. W. Pogue died in 1916. Four grandchildren: Miss Eleanor Pogue of Mt. Vernon, New York, Mrs. Walter Snyder of New York City, Mrs. Cyrus Stow of Cedar Brook, New Jersey. Funeral at First Presbyterian church. Rev. H. S. Farrill. Burial in Oak Grove.
POGUE. Died 21-11-1920. Mrs. Maude Knapp Pogue, aged 52 years died at her home in Chicago, Monday morning, at 1:30 o’clock of neuralgia of the heart and complications. Mrs. Pogue’s condition became serious Friday, and her daughter, Eleanor, who was in Billings, Mont., was notified to come immediately to Chicago. She arrived there Saturday Night. Mrs. Pogue was the daughter of the late Dr. George Knapp and Henrietta Veach Knapp, who is living in Clarkston, Wash. Her husband, the late Judge Harry W. Pogue, was a prominent attorney of Jersey County and was County Judge for several terms. His death occurred 21 November 1916, at 1:30 am. Being the same date and hour of Mrs. Pogue’s death. The funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian church, Wednesday at 2:30 pm. The Rev. H. S. Farrill officiating. This was also the same date and hour of her husband’s funeral from this church in 1916. Mrs. Pogue lived in St. Louis, with her parents until her marriage, 6 January 1891. After her marriage she lived in Jerseyville until she moved to Chicago four years ago, after the death of her husband. She was an active member in church and social circles. She was also a member of the local chapter of the Order of Eastern Star , having been a past Worthy Matron of the Jerseyville Chapter. She became a member of the Fourth Presbyterian church in Chicago. The survivors are her daughter, Miss Eleanor Pogue, who has been in Billings, Mont., this fall, her mother Mrs. Henritetta Veach Knapp of Clarkston, Wash.; and two Brothers, Veach Knapp, also of Clarkston, Wash., and William Knapp of Pittsburg, PA. The remains will arrive Wednesday Morning and will be taken to the home of her mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary Pogue.
Died 00-06-197325 June 1973: Jerseyville – herman theodore pohlman, 85, of Grafton died at 2 pm Sunday at Alton Memorial hospital. Mr. pohlman was a retired ferryman and hotel operator. He had operated the ferry at Grafton for years before the state replaced the private ferry service over the Illinois river. A son of the late William and anna arnold pohlman, he was born at deer plain, ill on 28 January 1888. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Dorothy B. jacobs pohlman, a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth kehl of Grafton and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday in St. Patrick’s Catholic church in Grafton. The Rev. Patrick Morrow will officiate. Interment will be in Scenic Hill cemetery. Visitation at the Gubser Funeral Home will be after 4 pm today with the rosary at 8 pm Tuesday.
POHLMAN. 10 January 1985: helen M. Pohlman, 66, was pronounced dead on arrival at 3:29 am Wednesday at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. Born in Meppen, daughter of the late Henry and Margaret (Pluster) Kerkhoff, she married Lawrence Pohlman who died in 1981. Surviving are two daughters, Anna Neidlinger of Indiana and Rose Ann Schobernd of Alton; a son, Lawrence Jr. of Godfrey; nine grandchildren; one great- grandchild; and one sister, Margaret Pohlman of Greenfield. Visitation will be after 4:30 pm Friday at hanks Funeral Home in Hardin. A rosary will be recited at 7 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 am Saturday at St. Barbara’s Catholic church in Batchtown with the Rev. Joseph Simburger as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Barbara’s cemetery.
POHLMAN. 21 January 1980: Patrick J. Pohlman, 22, son of John B. and Mary Ann Pille Pohlman, Jr. of Jerseyville, was pronounced dead at the scene of a one-car accident six miles west of Jerseyville on Rt. 16 at 8:45 am. 20 Jan. He was born 10 March 1957 in Jerseyville and attended the local schools. He was employed by National Vinegar Co., Alton. He is survived by his parents; five brothers, Mike, Kenny ,Paul, Stephen and Mark; two sisters, Mary and Nancy; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mae Pille. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 am Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier church with Father Michael Henehan celebrant. Burial will be in St. Francis cemetery. The St. Francis building fund has been named as a memorial. Visitation from 4 to 9 Monday evening at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where the rosary will be recited at 8 pm.
POHLMAN. 24 December 1980: Grafton – Dorothy Bertha Pohlman, 88, of Route 1, died at 9:30 am Tuesday at Alton Memorial hospital. She and her husband, Herman, operated the Grafton Ferry for 40 years, and the Pohlman Hotel and Tavern in Grafton for 20 years. Born in Golden Eagle, a daughter of the late Dietrich and Minnie (Depper) Jacobs, she and Herman Pohlman were married on 5 January 1915. He died 24 June 1973. Surviving are a brother, Harry Jacobs of Hardin; and a sister, Minnie Snyders of Wood River. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 pm Friday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home Grafton, where services will be held at 1 pm sat. Burial will be in Scenic Hill cemetery, and St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Brussels has been named as a memorial.
POHLMAN. Mary A. Pohlman, 92, of Carrollton, died 29 April 1988 at North American Health Care Center in White Hall. She was born in Jerseyville to the late Herman and Helen (Abeln) Pohlman. Survivors include sister, Margaret Pranger of Carrollton; brothers George and Joseph Pohlman, both of Carrollton, and Frances Pohlman of Peoria. She was preceded in death by three brothers, John, August, and Bernard Pohlman. Visitation and the rosary were at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. The Rev. Joseph O’Reilly celebrated the funeral mass at St. John’s Catholic church. Burial was in St. John’s cemetery in Carrollton.
POHLMAN. 30 December 1965: (Picture appears): Ernest Gerard Pohlman, office manager of Gorman Brothers Ready Mix the past fourteen years, died suddenly Sunday afternoon, 26 December at 5:45 o’clock at his home on Route 16 west of Jerseyville. Mr. Pohlman had experienced minor pains in right arm and chest during the afternoon but had attached no significance to the condition. Following the evening meal Mr. Polhman had played with his children and then retired to the tv room where he apparently suffered a fatal heart attack. He was found by his wife, Mrs. Marcella Pohlman, when she went to take him a cup of coffee. Mr. Pohlman was brought to the Jersey Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Funeral services will be held Wednesday Morning, 29 December at 9:30 o’clock at St. Mary’s church, West Woods, with Rev. Father Peter Klumbys officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s cemetery. Visitation hours are at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Mr. Pohlman was a son of Mrs. Catherine Imming Pohlman of Carrollton and the late John B. Pohlman and was born at Meppenon 10 August 1917. His age at the time of death was 48 years, 4 months, and 16 days. He was a veteran of World War II and was a member of Worthey Post, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. Mr. Polhman was a past Exalted Ruler of the Jerseyville Elks Lodge and currently was serving as Vice-president of the Southwest Dist. Elks Assoc. He was active in the Democratic party, serving as committeeman in English township. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Marcella Tonsor Pohlman, one son, John Polhman and 3 daughters, Margaret, Terrie and Kathryn Polhman, who reside at home; his mother, Mrs. Catherine Polhman of Carrollton; six brothers, Lee H., Phillip, and Edward of Carrollton, Alfred of Berwyn, James of Granite City and John B. Polhman, Jr of Jerseyville; and one sister, Mrs. Cyril (Margaret) Goetten of Jerseyville. His father, three brothers, Ernest, Robert and Victor, the latter his twin brother, preceded him in death.
POLHMAN. 1 October 1979: (Picture Appears): Robert J. Polhman, 60, of Jerseyville, a salesman at Sunderland Motor Co., died unexpectedly at his home, 116 Barr Ave., 28 September from an apparent heart attack. His wife, Doris, found him lying on the floor when she came downstairs. Born in Grafton 19 August 1919, he was the son of the late William J. and Mary Fortschneider Polhman. He married the Former Doris Ann Ferenbach 23 November 1943. The retired US Army Major served during World War II and the Korean conflict. He was member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Moose Lodge. Pohlman was a state director of the Knights of Columbus, District Deputy, past Grand Knight and a Member of the Fourth Degree Knights. On 20 September he learned that he had been selected as a KC state officer to be an honor guard for Pope John Paul II’s papal mass Friday in Grant Park, Chicago. The Knights will form a double line to act as a human fence for the mass. Polhman was also one of 100 Knights selected to stand honor guard for the Pope’s audience Thursday. His survivors are his wife; one son, James J. Polhman of Rockford; one brother and a sister, William Polhman and Mrs. Gertrude Arnold of Grafton. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister. A funeral mass was celebrated Monday morning at St. Francis Xavier church with Father Patrick Morrow celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery. The rosary was recited Sunday evening at Jacoby Funeral Home followed by the Fourth Degree Knight’s Rites. The Jerseyville courthouse where Mrs. Pohlman is deputy circuit clerk, was closed Monday morning.
POHLMAN. 24 January 1983: Brussels – Stanley B. Polhman, 84, died at 4 pm Sunday at Jersey Community Hospital , Jerseyville. Born in Brussels, son of the late Bernard and Ida (Seiferman) Pohlman, he was a game warden for Illinois Department of Conservation. He married the former Mary Fortschneider and she died in 1970. Surviving are six Daughters, Ester Woods and Laverne Roth, both of Godfrey, Ida Haselhorst and Jeanine Haselhorst, both of East Alton, Amelia Springman of Brighton and Rita Patterson of Bethalto; four Sons, Stanley of Bethalto, George and Frank both of East Alton and Tom of Brussels; 32 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren. Visitation will be after 4:30 pm Tuesday at Hanks Funeral Home in Brussels. A parish rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 9:30 am Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic church with the Rev. Louis……..rest missing.
POLHMAN. Raymond William Pohlman, 83, of Alton, formerly of Grafton, died at 12:25 pm Tuesday, 23 August 1988 at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. Polhman had been Grafton City Treasurer 16 years and retired as bookkeeper for American Cyanamide in Illinois. Born in Calhoun County, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Anna (Gertesmeyer) Pohlman. He married the former Dora Ann Houchin 23 December 1931, in Alton, and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, Richard and Lawrence “Larry” Pohlman, both of Grafton; two daughters, Nancy Rauscher of Brighton and Mary Bartholomew of Alton; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Leo Pohlman of Clewiston, Florida. A grandson preceded him in death. Visitation will be 4-8 pm Thursday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be conducted 11 am Friday by the Rev. Henry Schmidt. Burial will be in Scenic Hill cemetery at Grafton. Memorials may be given to Godfrey fire district or Jerseyville Free Library.
POLHMAN. Died 19-06-1990. Brussels – Stuart W. Polhman, 16, died at 10:30 am Tuesday 19 June at home after a lengthy illness. Stuart completed his sophomore year at Brussels high school and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic church in Brussels. Born in Jerseyville, he was the son of Glenn L. Pohlman of Brussels and the late Margaret E. (Triplett) Polhman. In addition to his father, surviving are his grandmother, Mildred Triplett of Hartford; Stepmother, Jan S. (Smith) Polhman of Brussels; and two Stepsisters, Karen Droege of Grafton and Cynthia Heffington of Batchtown. Visitation is from 4 to 9 pm today at Hanks Funeral Home in Brussels, with a prayer service at 7:30 pm. A funeral mass is at 10 am Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic church in brussels with the Rev. Dave Schauer as celebrant. Burial is in the church cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Muscular Dystrophy Assoc. or South Calhoun County Ambulance Service.
POHLMAN. Sep 1952: Bernard John Pohlman, 35, a native of Grafton, died Friday evening, 29 August at eleven o’clock at St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton where he had been a patient for a week. He suffered a heart attack in March, but was able to continue his work as a machine operator at Owens-Illinois Glass Company during June and july. Mr. Polhman was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William J. Pohlman and was born in Grafton on 7 March 1917. His age at the time of death was thirty-five years, five months and twenty-two days. He was a veteran of World War II. The decedent is survived by his wife, Mrs. Pat Chilton Pohlman, a daughter, Beth Ann, 7, of Alton, a sister, Mrs. Paul Arnold of Grafton and two brothers, Lt. R. J. Pohlman of the 485th Engineers who arrived Tuesday evening from Germany, and William H. Pohlman of Grafton. Funeral rites were held at St. Patrick’s church in Alton Tuesday morning at nine o’clock. Rev. Father Peter Donohoe was celebrant of the requiem high mass and the Rev. Father Michael Sheehy of Grafton was in the sanctuary. Burial was delayed until the arrival of Lt. Pohlman who flew from Germany and arrived Tuesday evening. Private rites were conducted Wednesday morning at ten o’clock at the Staten Funeral Home and burial was in St. Joseph’s cemetery.
POHLMAN. 30 May 1985: Fred W. Pohlman,79, former owner and operator of the Golden Eagle Ferry, died Tuesday, 21 May at St. Joseph’s Health Center in St. Charles, Missouri. Following a brief illness. Pohlman was born in Deer Plain son of the late William and Elizabeth Mikus Pohlman. He was the owner of the Golden Eagle Ferry until his retirement. On 21 November 1932, he married the former Kay Kamp, who died 31 March 1982. He is survived by two daughters, Janet Brichler of Trenton and Nancy Schmitz of Jeannetta, PA; three Sons, Fred Jr, Dale and Dan, All of Golden Eagle; 19 grandchildren; three great grandchildren and one brother, Rober of Brussels. Memorial services will be held at a later date. The body was donated to Washington University Medical Center. The Ronald McDonald house of St. Louis has been suggested as a memorial.
POINTER. 7 October 1971: Mrs. Mildred Butler, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Pointer of Jerseyville went to Ohio last week to attend the funeral of Paul E. Pointer of 4224 West Central Ave., Toledo. Mr. Pointer was a brother to Mrs. Butler and the Pointer men. Services were held on Friday at ten-thirty o’clock in the morning at the Barndt Funeral Home in Wayne, Ohio, with Rev. D. V. Dillinger officiating. Burial was in Graham Cemetery in Wayne. The death of Mr. Pointer, 55, occurred 28 September at St. Vincent hospital in Toledo after a four months illness. He was born 1 September 1916, in Jerseyville, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pointer. His marriage to Leota Hoiles took place on 3 November 1939 in St. Charles, Missouri. Mr. Pointer was a former member of the VFW of Fostoria, Ohio, and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a truck broker and driver for Middle Atlantic Transportation Company for twenty-five years. Surviving Mr. Pointer are his wife, Leota; his father, Fred Pointer of Jerseyville; one Son, Donald, of Holiday, Florida; one daughter, Barbara (Mrs. James Smith) of Westland, Michigan; one sister, Mrs. Butler of this city; and three Brothers, Edward and Donald of Jerseyville, and Merle of North Hollywood, Calif., and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother. (Mr. and Mrs. Donald Pointer of Jerseyville went to Ohio for funeral also).
POINTER. 10 May 1973: Final services for Aaron Merle (Spec) Pointer, 53, of North Hollywood, Calif., a former Jerseyville resident, will be held Friday afternoon (tomorrow) at 1:30 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. L. E. Hutchinson will officiate and interment will be in Valhalla Memorial Park. His death occurred 5 May at Veterans Hospital in Los Angeles, Calif. Friends may call at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home after 4 pm this afternoon (thursday). A World War II veteran, he was born 25 may, 1919 a son of Fred and Mary Fischer Pointer of Jerseyville. Mr. Pointer was a truck driver for a cement company. His survivors are his wife, the former Adeline Jennings; two daughters, Mrs. David (Barbara) Brainerd of Jerseyville and Mrs. Beverly Tallant of North Hollywood; a son, Merle Frederick Pointer, North Hollywood; his father and two brothers, Donald and Edward of Jerseyville; and one sister, Mrs. Mildred Butler of Jerseyville. His mother and one brother preceded him in death.
POINTER. Jerseyville Republican April 1917: Mason Pointer born in Lancaster, Garrard County, KY 14 March 1838. Died at his home in Jerseyville 28 March 1917. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the Union Army at Camp Dick Robinson, KY, 4 August 1862 in Co. H of 7th Ky Cav. He was captured at Richmond, KY 1 September 1862. He rejoined his regiment at Franklin, Tenn., the same month and was continually at the front for three years. After the capture of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge, his regiment was ordered to reinforce Burnside at Knoxville, Tenn. Afterwards returning to the Army of the Cumberland, his regiment was with Sherman at the Capture of Atlanta, Ga. Here the Sherman Army divided with Sherman’s March to the Sea, the deceased’s part of the Army following Hood back to Nashville and defeated Hood in a three day battle. He was also present at the capture of Selma, Montgomery, Ala., and West Point, and Columbus, Ga. His command was also present at the capture of Jeff Davis. After the surrender of Howell Cobb at Macon, Georgia, peace was declared. He was honorably discharged 10 July 1865. He was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Hall in 1881. He came to Greenfield where he made his home until 15 years ago, when he moved to Jerseyville where he has since lived. He leaves three Children: Mrs. E. H. Heck of Greenfield and Clyde C. and Fred of Jerseyville; one sister, Mrs. S. B. Cole of Greenfield and 5 grandchildren. Presbyterian church in Greenfield. Auspices of GAR burial in Oakwood cemetery. Obit #2: Mason Pointer, 79 years old, died 29 March at home of son, Clyde Pointer in north part of town on the Grosjean place. Taken to Greenfield for burial.
POLEET. Jerseyville – Donald Poleet, 58, formerly of East Alton, died at 5:30 pm Sunday, 6 December 1987 at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville. Poleet was a supervisor with A. O. Smith Co. and a consultant for Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto. He was born in Carrollton and served in the US Marines during the Korean conflict. Surviving are his father, Robert Poleet of Jerseyville; a daughter, Debra Johnson of Wood River; three sons, Michael Poleet of Kane; Paul Poleet of Bellflower, Calif. And Seaman Robert Poleet stationed with the US Navy in Orlando, Fla., four grandchildren; two brothers, George Poleet of Jerseyville and Robert Poleet of Oosburg, Wisconsin, and two sisters, Helen Gilleland of Jerseyville and Carma Rice of Hillsboro. He was preceded in death by his mother, Wylna (Allen) Poleet; and a brother, Bill Poleet. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Tuesday with services at 11 am Wednesday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Burial will be at Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville with graveside military rites by the American Legion. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
POLEET. 20 May 1976: William Neil Poleet, 45, of R. R. 1 Grafton, died at 3:15 am on 19 May at St. Mary’s hospital in St. Louis. Poleet was a youth supervisor at Illinois Youth Commission, Grafton. He was born 7 February 1931 in Jerseyville, a son of Robert E. and Wylna Allen Poleet. His wife was the former Beverly Desherlia. His survivors include his wife, Beverly; father, Robert Poleet of Jerseyville, three brothers, Robert of Oostburg, Wisconsin, George of Jerseyville and Donald of South Roxana; and his sisters, Mrs. Helen Gilleland of Jerseyville and Mrs. Carma Lee Rice of Hillsboro. The funeral will be conducted at 1:30 pm on 22 May at Jacoby Funeral Home in Jerseyville with the Rev. M. Edwards Breed and the Rev. Donald Sherman officiating. Visitation will be held at Jacoby Funeral Home, Jerseyville after 4 pm Friday. The Leukemia Foundation has been suggested as a memorial.
POLEET. Jerseyville – Robert E. Poleet, Sr, 91, died at 10:40 pm Thursday, 6 February 1992 at home. Poleet was a self-employed radio and television repair service technician in Jerseyville for more than 50 years, retiring in 1965. He was a member of Jerseyville Moose Lodge 695. Born in Grafton 6 September 1900, he was a son of the late John Poleet and Nettie (Walker) Poleet Stone. He and the former Wylna Allen were married 29 April 1922. She died 3 June 1961. Surviving are two sons, George Poleet of Jerseyville and Robert Poleet Jr. of Oostburg, Wis; two daughters, Helen Gilleland of Jerseyville and Carma Rice of Hillsboro; 15 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; a great great grandchild; and two half Sisters, Mary Sheff of Wood River and Ruth Maupin of Cottage Hills. Preceding him in death were two sons, Donald and William Poleet; two grandchildren; a great granddaughter; a brother, George Poleet; a half brother and a half sister. Visitation is from 4 to 8 pm today at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are at 1:30 pm Sunday. The Rev. Larry W. Hayes will officiate. Burial is in Oak Grove cemetery at Jerseyville. POORE. 29 June 1967: Henry Frank Poore, 86 year old retired gardener of Grafton, died Friday morning, 23 June at 11:25 o’clock at the Villa Terrace Nursing Home where he had resided the past one and one-half years. Rev. Dewaine Bradley of East Alton officiated at the final rites which were held Sunday afternoon at half past one o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Burial was in Hartford cemetery near Grafton. Friends called at the Funeral Home. Mr. Poore was a son of the late Edward and Amma Peeler Poore and was born at Hamburg on 23 December 1880. At the time of death he was aged 86 years, and 6 months. He had resided in Grafton for twenty-six years. Surviving the aged man are his wife, Mrs. Bertha Poore, one Step-son, Morris Rodgers of East Alton, a brother, James Poore of Alconda, and a sister, Mrs. Viola Perry of Hannibal, Missouri.
POORE. 13 July 1972: Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha Poore, 80 year old resident of Grafton, will be held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville Friday afternoon, 14 July at 1:30 o’clock. Burial will be in Scenic Hill cemetery at Grafton. Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home after 4 o’clock this (thurs) afternoon. The death of Mrs. Poore occurred Wednesday morning, 12 July at 2:15 o’clock at the Wood River township hospital. She was a daughter of Stephen and Anna Besaw Desherlia and was born in Calhoun County on 22 December 1891. Surviving Mrs. Poore are a son, Morris J. Rodgers of East Alton; a foster daughter, Mrs. Lenora Taylor of Sandoval; and four Brothers, Charles and Elmer Desherlia of Grafton, Stephen Desherlia of Peoria, and Adam Desherlia of Jerseyville. Her husband, Frank Poore, and two sisters, Mrs. Jessie Mielke and Mrs. Marguerite Seeman preceded her in death.
POORE. July 1953: Robert Poore, thirty six year old farmer of Richwoods township was found dead about seven-thirty o’clock Monday morning 13 July beneath the wheel of a sprayer at the Waris Brothers orchard northwest of Fieldon. He was found by another employee, Louis Sagez, who went to investigate when he saw the sprayer operating but could not see anyone. Coroner Rodney Jacoby and Sheriff Herman H. Blackorby were called to conduct an investigation and the former held an inquest Monday evening. The jury found that death resulted from crushed chest and probable skull fracture, injuries which were accidentally received when the tractor with speed sprayer attached which the man was driving turned over and pinned him under the wheel of the sprayer. There were no eye-witnesses to the accident and the only testimony offered at the inquest was given by Mr. Sagez who found Poore fatally injured. Sagez reported that he had been spraying on the same ridge and when he got to one end of the row he saw the sprayer operating but he couldn’t see anyone there. He stated that when he found Poore under the wheel of the sprayer he shut off the tractor and sprayer and went for help. In his testimony Mr. Sagez states “the tractor looked like it had run up against the sprayer with the back end of the tractor sitting against the front end of the sprayer. It looked like the tractor rolled over.” The accident occurred on a hillside. Poore, a veteran of World War II, was a son of Thomas Jefferson Poore and Laura Delanie Poore. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Vernalea Poore, four children, Shirley, 5, David, 4, Brenda, 3 and Sandra, three months; his parents; five brothers, Jack, Abner and William Poore of Hardin, Thomas of Independence, Missouri, and James of Wisconsin, and three sisters, Mrs. Lorraine Kirchner of Jerseyville, Mrs. Marie Matthews and Eleanor Poore of Hardin. The body was moved to the Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in Hardin, Wednesday afternoon, 15 July at two o’clock. Burial was in Hardin cemetery with full military ritual.
POPE. Jersey County Democrat 1 August 1889: Nancy Drake, daughter of Jonathan and Rod A. Drake, born 30 July 1815 in Plainfield, Somerset County, New Jersey. Married James Pope in 1832. Children: Mary L., Samuel S., Isaac F. and Francis G. Pope. James Pope died 11 March 1842. She married Isaac I. Smalley in 1845. To them were Born Tabitha, Jacob, Lucius, and Charles. Isaac Smalley died 15 July 1884. Isaac, Francis, and Charles have preceded their mother. Joined Baptist church in Plainfield, New Jersey. Moved to Jersey County In 1858. She died at home of her daughter, Mrs. Stephen Catt. 73 years old.
POPE. Jersey County Democrat 3 October 1889: Died at home 26 Sep, Samuel S. Pope, born in Sommerset County, New Jersey 26 January 1836. 53 years old. Funeral from Methodist church. Rev. Leeper.
POPE. 1896: Mrs. Jacob G. Pope, after a lingering illness of typhoid, died at her home near Kane, Sunday, 2 February 1896, aged 42 years 9 months, 14 days. The funeral took place at the ME church, Tuesday. Other members of the family are also sick with typhoid.
POPE. 22 March 1962: Private services were held at Parker’s Funeral Chapel in Columbia, Missouri, for Mrs. William H. Pope, 84, who died at 1 am 5 March at the Boone County Nursing Home where she had been a patient since Jan, 1960. The Rev. C. E. Lemmon conducted the service and burial was at Oak Grove in St. Louis. Mrs. Pope, the former Hettie June Piggott was born 13 November 1877 in Jersey County, a daughter of the late George Marion and Hannah Snyder Piggott. She was the seventh of the couple’s eight children, all of whom preceded her in death. She was graduated from Upper Alton high school on 31 May 1895 and taught school for several years in Jersey County before going to St. Louis to live. In St. Louis she was a bookkeeper until her marriage to William Pope on 18 October 1904. Mr. Pope died in Nov., 1953. Mrs. Pope is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Roland Ellis of Columbia, Missouri, and one granddaughter, Carole Ellis Wolff of Lansing, Mich. Mrs. Pope was a direct descendant of James Piggott, Illinois pioneer who operated the first ferry across the Mississippi river. Mr. Piggott was born in Connecticut in 1739. He joined the George Rogers Clark Expedition to Kaskaskia and in 1780 became a resident of Illinois at Cahokia. There he served as Justice of the Peace and established his ferry service in 1797. His son, Dr. Isaac Newton Piggott, was an itinerant Methodist preacher in Jersey County and later became a Postmaster in Jersey County. He established the line from which Mrs. Pope descended.
PORTER. 1896: Lucinda Porter was born in Kentucky in the year 1829, moved to Jersey County, this state, and has been a resident ever since. Died, 21 March 1896, aged 67 years. She was the mother of eight children, six of whom are now living. She has been a member of the ME church for over twenty years and was esteemed by all who knew her.
PORTER. Mascoutah – Casey Porter, 17, died Tuesday, 11 July 1989 in an automobile accident in Mascoutah township. Born in Colorado Springs, Colo., he was the son of Marty E. and Donna R. (Fry) Porter of Mascoutah. Casey was a senior and member of the CVE program at Mascoutah Community High school. Surviving are two sisters, Michele C. and Angela L. Porter, both of Mascoutah; and his grandparents, Jesse and Alice Buis of Jerseyville and Harold and Thelma Fry of Elsah. Visitation continues 10 am Thursday at Elsah United Methodist church at Elsah until time of services at 11 am with the Rev. John T. Vidakovich officiating. Burial is in Elsah cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church or the Mascoutah Memorial scholarship fund.
PORTER. 13 April 1982: Charles Edward Porter, 70,. of R. 3, Jerseyville died at 3:35 am 3 April at Jersey Community Hospital. He was born 20 July 1911 in Brownstown, a son of the late Rhoda and Emma Horstman Porter and had been a Lacleded Steel Co employee. He was a World War II Army veteran. His survivors are his wife, the former Madaleen Mills; one brother, Maurice Porter of Alton; five sisters, Helen Kennington, Mary McDonald, Agnes Riley, Maude Romain and Bernadine Reese of Alton. Services were held Monday afternoon at Jacoby Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert Broeder. Military rites were conducted at Oak Grove cemetery.
PORTER. Jerseyville – Madaleen M. Porter, 83, died at 12:15 pm Monday, 6 April 1992 at Jerseyville care center. Born 3 December 1908 at ?itro, W. Virginia, she was a daughter of the late James and Mary Maude (Massey) Mills. She married Charles Porter in 1940 in Alton. He died 3 April 1981. Preceding her in death were two brothers, William Edward and James Benjamin Mills; and a sister, Reba Cornell. POST. Died, on Monday, Sept. 16, at 1 1-2 o’clock a.m., Alphonso A., youngest son of W. W. and H. W. POST, aged 17 years, 10 months and 12 days. From the Virden News, printed in the Jersey County Democrat, September 20, 1872.
POST. James POST, son of W. W. POST, died at Virden last Thursday and was buried Saturday. L. L. KIRBY and wife, A. CALHOUN and wife, B. F. CLAHOUN and wife, James CALHOUN, James KIRBY and Jet POST left here on the 5 p.m. train Friday to attend the funeral. Mr. Post was engineer at Jacob Utt’s coal mines, and last fall something got wrong with the engine when the cage had four men in it, and only for the prompt action of Mr. Post they would have been killed. When he saw the danger he caught a heavy scantling and pushed it under the cage, but in so doing received a severe jar which confined him to his bed for some time. An abcess formed in his head and he apparently recovered, but was taken with a relapse and died as above stated. He was highly respected by the citizens of Virden, especially his employer. He leaves a wife and two children to mourn his loss. From Jersey County Democrat, March 1881, possibly March 10.
POST. Feb 1881: Died, on Thursday, February 3, 1881, at his home in Virden, of brain fever, James T. Post, after an illness of three weeks. Deceased was born in the county of Jersey, this state, on the 25th of January 1845. In the month of December 1849, he removed with his parents to Sangamon County, a few miles northwest of Virden. 30 December 1868, he was united in marriage with Miss Eva F. Beard; soon afterwards he engaged in business at the town of Morrisonville, Christian County, where he remained two years. From that place, he removed to Waverly, Morgan County, and two years later he came to Virden, where he has resided ever since. Mr. Post and his wife united with the Presbyterian church of this city in the fall of 1874. It is supposed that his death was the result of a fall from a ladder, a few weeks ago, at which time he received injury. Mr. Post was a quiet man who had the confidence and respect of all who knew him. In his death the community loses a good citizen. He leaves behind a wife and three small children, father and mother, sister and brother to mourn his loss. These friends, in their affliction, have the heartfelt sympathy of the people. The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church on Saturday Morning, conducted by Rev. W. A. Dunning, who delivered a very appropriate, interesting and instructive discourse, a digest of which we would have been pleased to publish had we been able to obtain the ms. He was assisted in the services by Revs. A. C. Byerly and J. L. M. Young. The remains were conveyed to the Virden cemetery for burial, followed by along procession of sorrowing relatives and sympathizing friends, among whom Were W. W. Post and wife (father and mother), and Mr. and Mrs. L. Kirby, their son and his wife, Mr. Frank Calhoun and wife, Mr. A. Calhoun and wife, Mr. Justice Post and wife, all of Jerseyville and vicinity; and Mrs. Smith Post of Girard. The last sad rites were performed at the grave by Rev. Mr. Dunning.
POST. 16 May 1974: Funeral services for Mrs. Charlotte Elizabeth Post, 87, of R. R. 4, Jerseyville were conducted Monday afternoon, May 13, at Jacoby Funeral Home. The Rev. Everett Chambers officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Her death occurred at 3:53 am on 10 May at Garnet’s Chateau. She was born 6 November 1886 in Greene County, the daughter of David and Elizabeth Rae Crone. Mrs. Post, a retired school teacher, was a member of the Kane Baptist church, Eastern Star of Jerseyville, Ruby Rebekah Lodge and American Legion auxiliary. Her husband was the late Marcus M. Post. She is survived by a son and Daughter, Charles A. Post of Jerseyville and Mrs. C. R. (Margaret) Stevens of Albuquerque, NM; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren. Eastern Star services were conducted Sunday evening, 12 May at Jacoby Funeral Home where visitation was held.
POST. 26 January 1956: Leslie C. Post, seventy-three year old retired vice president in charge of the St. Louis Union Trust Company’s probate department, died Sunday, 22 January at Deaconess hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Post was a son of the Late Elmer and Fannie Birkenmayer Post of Jersey County, and he was born and reared here. He received his early education at the Jerseyville high school. Mr. Post was an uncle of Mrs. Carl Flamm and John Cory of Jerseyville and a cousin of Earl and Frank Birkenmayer, all of Jerseyville. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Alexander and Sons Funeral Home, and burial was in Memorial Park cemetery. Mrs. Flamm, Mrs. Paul Meuth and Mrs. M. M. Post of Jerseyville attended the services. Mr. Post joined the Trust Company in 1902 as secretary to the late John F. Shepley, then vice president and later president and board chairman. He held the posts of probate department clerk and assistant trust officer before he was named to the vice presidency in 1926. At his retirement in 1946, Mr. Post was believed to have supervised the administration of more estates, both in number and value, than any living Missourian. The estates ranged from a few hundred dollars to one in excess of $50,000,000. The decedent was a former trustee and secretary of Pilgrim Congregational church and a past director of the advisory committee of the Congregational City Missionary Society. He was former president of the Corporate Fiduciaries Association of St. Louis. Surviving Mr. Post in addition to local relatives, are his wife, Mrs. Margaret Post, three daughters, and two sons, and eleven grandchildren.
POST. Jerseyville – Charles A. Post, 71, died at 2 am Sunday, 18 February 1990 at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. Post, a US Army World War II veteran, was a carpenter for Shell Oil Co of Wood River, retiring in 1981. Born in Kane, he was the son of the Late Marcus and Charlotte (Crone) Post. On 3 October 1948 in Jerseyville, he married the Former Annadell Wade, and she survives. Also surviving area daughter, Melodee Ann Dierker of St. Louis; a granddaughter; and a sister, Margaret Stevens of Albuquerque, NM. Visitation is from 4 to 9 pm Tuesday With services at 1 pm Wednesday at Jacoby-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Rev. Walter Burk will officiate. Military graveside services will be conducted at Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville by VFW Post 492, both of Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the First Baptist church of Jerseyville or Kane Baptist church, where he was a long time member.
POST. Republican Examiner. 8 July 1881: Mrs. Ardelia Post, widow of the late James T. Post, died at residence of Mr. Lebbeul L. Kirby, in Jerseyville. The deceased being 79 years old. Maiden Name Ardella Whitford, born at Shasbury, Vermont. When 17 years old on 3 May 1818, she married James T. Post, also of Vermont, and the family came to Jersey County in 1832. Five sons and two daughters of whom three sons and one daughter are still living. James Post died 7 years ago. Funeral from Baptist church. Rev. D. Heagle.

Post, son of Justice L. and Caroline Stout Post, born 18 February 1862 in Jerseyville, Illinois and died at his home in Belton, Missouri, 1 October 1927. 65 years old. Married Lila M. Ross, 15 December 1880 at Jerseyville, Illinois and moved from Illinois to Missouri in 1892, residing on a farm near Peculiar, Missouri, until 1897 when he moved to Belton, MO, where he lived for 30 years. For 20 years of that time he sold groceries as a traveling salesman, for about ten years had been in the retail grocery business in Belton. Leaves widow, two daughters, Mrs. Viola F. Jones of Belton and Mrs. Jenevee C. Sturgis of Morristown, New Jersey; one Grandson, Robert Post Sturgis, and four sisters: Althea Post and Leah Lamb of Bartow, Florida, Abby P. Nesbitt of Ralston, New Jersey, and Jessie P. Locke of Kansas City, Missouri. Funeral from home. Burial in Belton cemetery.
POST. Jerseyville Republican 31 August 1911: Elmer Ellsworth Post, son of Caleb A. and Mary Norris Post born 30 July 1861, 3 miles northwest of Jerseyville. Married Fannie B. Birkenmayer 14 September 1881. Moved to Gage County, Neb. Returned to Jersey County and in 1887 rented Dalzell farm 2 miles south of town. In May 1890 he Purchased W. W. Edwards farm southeast of town. He was accidentally killed on 15 August by falling from the roof of the large new diary barn on the Heller farm near Kane, Illinois. Funeral from Baptist Church. Rev. W. W. Hicks. Leaves his widow, a son, Leslie C. of St. Louis; daughter, Edith May, wife of Lester Cory of Piasa, Illinois. Three grandchildren. Obit #2 August 1911: This community was shocked Tuesday noon when it received the intelligence from Kane that Elmer E. Post had been accidentally killed by falling from the roof of a barn. The accident occurred on the Parkerdale stock farm near Kane. Walter Malott, of this city, has the contract for the erection of a new dairy barn to replace the one destroyed by fire several months ago. Walter and Elmer Post were working for Malott. As usual Tuesday morning they drove to the Parker farm and went to work shingling. During the forenoon Elmer told his brother that he had a dizzy feeling. Walter insisted that Elmer go down from the roof and do other work, but he failed to do so. A little later Walter, who was at work about 100 feet away, heard a tumbling noise and on looking around saw Elmer rolling from the roof backwards. No cry or words were uttered while falling. Elmer fell with head downward, striking a pile of lumber. An arm was broken and a gash cut in the head. When Walter reached his side, Elmer was dead. Elmer has been more or less troubled with spells of dizziness, and it is believed that one of these spells or a stroke of apoplexy came on him. The body was brought to Jerseyville and taken to his home in the west part of town. Mr. Post was one of our very best citizens. He owned a farm east of town, but several years ago moved to town. Two years ago last spring he was elected Alderman from the First Ward, the term expiring last May. He was painstaking conscientious official. He was a consistent Christian, a member of the Baptist church and Sunday school, and served on the Board of Trustees of the church. He is survived by a wife, one daughter, Mrs. Lester J. Cory, of Piasa, and one son, Leslie Post, a teacher in Barnes Business College, St. Louis. The funeral will be held from the Baptist church Friday at 2 pm , Rev. W. W. Hicks officiating.
POSTLEWAIT. 6 March 1975: Urban Francis “Bud” Postlewait, 55, of 1112 E. Spruce St., Jerseyville, was pronounced dead on arrival at 11:55 am on 1 March at Jersey Community Hospital. He was born 30 June 1919 in Greene County, a son of Urban D. and Mary Ann Schnelton Postlewait. Postlewait, a former mechanic, was a World War II veteran. He was a member of the American Legion and a past commander at Kane. His survivors include his widow, Mrs. June Williamson Postlewait; three Sons, Urban P. Postlewait of R. R. 4, Dennis M. of Champaign and Kim of Kane; stepsons, Ronald and Randy Williamson of Alton and Michael Williamson of Jerseyville; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Gail Wilkinson of Alton and Debra Williamson of Springfield; a brother and sister, George R. Postlewait of Godfrey and Mrs. A. J. Hansen of Carrollton. Final rites were conducted Tuesday morning 4 March at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert L. Heintz officiating. Interment was at St. John’s cemetery in Carrollton. The family designated the heart fund as a memorial.
POTTER. June 1908: Mrs. Mary Potter, nee Brower, wife of Richard Potter, died at home in Springfield. Had made her home in Grafton with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Dempsey, until her marriage. Funeral in Springfield. Following relatives attended – Mrs. Frank Rippley, Mrs. Benjamin Brower, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. D. Dempsey, Dr. Gideon Dempsey and Edward Dempsey.
POTTS. Prairie State 24 October 1851: In Jerseyville, on Sunday the 12th inst., Mrs. Jane A. Potts, wife of Judge Potts, age 47 years. Deceased was a woman of deeply religious character and studious to train in the fear of the lord her numerous family. She was one of the earlier members of the Presbyterian church. Resided here the last 18 years. A native of Tennessee.
POWDERLY. 22 January 1970: Funeral rites for John Richard (Ted) Powderly, 56, of Granite City, son of John Powderly of Jerseyville, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Mercer Funeral Home in Granite City. He died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon at his home of an apparent heart attack. Interment was in Memorial Gardens, Granite City. Mr. Powderly was born and reared in Jerseyville and attended local schools. His mother was the late Florence Longwell in addition to his father and step-mother, he is survived by his widow, Jewel; two sons, Dean and David, all of Granite City; one daughter, Mrs. Robert Witting of Pittsburgh, PA; one step-daughter, Mrs. Gerald Broadwater of Granite City; a half brother, Clyde Powderly of St. Louis; four half sisters, Mrs. Andrew Powers of Fieldon, Mrs. Huber Hughes of Springfield, Mrs. Alva Chapman of Florida, and Mrs. Kenneth Ashford of Jerseyville and 14 grandchildren.
POWDERLY. 24 April 1978: Funeral mass for Thomas B. Powderly, 71, of 103 Hollow Ave., Jerseyville will be celebrated at 10 am 25 April at the Holy Ghost church with Father William H. Hembrow celebrant. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier cemetery. He died at 2:15 am 22 April in the emergency room at Jersey Community Hospital. Born 19 May 1906 he was the son of Thomas and Margaret McCarthy Powderly. He was a self-employed electrical contractor. His survivors are his wife, the former Agnes Bauer; two daughters, Miss Kathleen Powderly of Edwardsville and Mrs. Louis (Mary) Frank of Jerseyville; one Son, Thomas J. Powderly of San Salvador Central America; three grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Catherine Bowers of St. Louis. No visitation.
POWDERLY. 7 March 1977: Funeral mass for Paul Matthew Powderly, 15, son of Mr and Mrs. Clyde Powderly of Columbia, MO was celebrated 5 March at the Sacred Heart Church in Columbia with burial there. He was the grandson of Mrs. John Powderly of Jerseyville. Paul died of apparent cardiac arrest on March 2 when running track at the junior high school in Columbia. He had just started to run when he dropped to the floor and died an hour after admittance to the hospital. Paul, a ninth grade student, was active in track, football, captain of the basketball team and was a member of the drama club. In addition to his parents he is survived by a sister, Patricia, and three brothers, John, James, and Thomas, his grandmother, Mrs. Powderly, aunts, uncles and cousins.
POWDERLY. Oct 1985: Agnes Juliana Powderly, 74, of Jerseyville died at 10:10 am 7 October at Garnet’s Chateau in Jerseyville. She was born 21 January 1911 in Missouri, the daughter of the late Barth and Mary Kallal Bauer. She married Thomas Bernard Powderly on 24 November 1934 and he died 22 April 1978. She is survived by a son, Thomas J. Powderly of Modesto, Calif; two daughters, Mary Frank of Jerseyville and Kathleen Guccioni of Alton; five grandchildren. Also surviving are two Brothers, Edward Bauer of Palo Alto, Calif. And Lawrence Bauer of Grand Junction, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers and one sister. Funeral mass was celebrated by father William Hembrow at 11 am 10 October at Holy Ghost Catholic church. Burial was at St. Francis cemetery, Jerseyville.
POWEL. 15 December 1955: Stewart Daniels Powel, a descendant of early residents of Jersey County, died at his home, 700 South Liberty St., Jerseyville at two-fifteen o’clock Friday morning, 9 December Following a brief illness. Mr. Powel suffered a heart attack a few years ago but he had recovered sufficiently to resume his work with Jacoby Brothers. On Tuesday of this week he suffered a minor illness and was confined to his home. After retiring Thursday night the deceased was stricken with the heart attack which resulted in his death. A son of the late James P. and Catherine Daniels Powel, the decedent was born in Jersey County 30 May 1899, and his age at the time of death was fifty-six years, six months and nine days. Mr. Powel is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alice Louise Jacoby Powel, and one sister, Mrs. Herbert Leigh of Corona Delmar, Calif. He was a member of the Jerseyville Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Funeral service were held at the First Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon, 11 December at two o’clock. The Rev. M. Edwards Breed officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.
POWEL. 16 August 1973: A mass of the resurrection will be said for Mrs. Emma Dorsett Powel, 78, of 209 Hickory, Jerseyville with the Rev. Robert Heintz officiating. She was found dead at her residence on 12 August. She was born 24 March 1895 in Jerseyville and was the widow of Charles A. Powel. Her only survivors are nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation was held Wednesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where the rosary was recited at 7 pm. Interment was in the Oak Grove cemetery.
POWELL. 26 June 1984: The funeral of Alice A. Powell, 89, of Medora was conducted at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home by the Rev. William reinhardt. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. She died at 9:40 pm on 17 June at Greenwood Manor Nursing Home, Jerseyville. She was born 24 March 1895 in Jersey County to the late Daniel and Laura Chism Woolsey and married Edward Powell on 3 October 1911 in Jerseyville; he died 17 March 1957. Surviving are two sons, George and Clayton of Medora; two Daughters, Callie Bennett of Medora and Elizabeth Dodge of Bethalto; two sisters, Viola Brooks and Lavina Mourning, both of Jerseyville; five grandchildren, 12 great and seven great-great grandchildren. Memorial is one’s choice.
POWEL. 8 August 1977: The funeral of Mrs. Alice Louise Powel, 75, of 1130 Warren, Jerseyville was held at 1:30 pm today, 8 August at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. R. E. George officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Her death occurred at 2:10 pm on 5 August at Jersey Community Hospital after an extended illness. Her husband, Stewart D. Powel, preceded her in death. Mrs. Powel, a retired secretary, was a member of the Jerseyville Order of Eastern Star. She was born on 2 July 1902, in Jerseyville, a daughter of Louis C. and Charlotte Kingston Jacoby. She is survived by two brothers, Leslie K. Jacoby and Rodney Jacoby, both of Jerseyville. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters, Mrs. Evangeline Fulkner, and Mrs. Pauline Jennings and three Brothers, Paul, Theodore, and Maurice H. Jacoby. The Jerseyville United Methodist church has been named as a memorial.
POWEL. 27 February 1975: The funeral of Harold O. Powel, 81, who died at his Home, 212 East Pearl St on 20 Feb. was conducted Saturday afternoon, 22 February at Jacoby Funeral Home. The Rev. M. Edwards Breed officiated. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. A World War I veteran and farmer, he was born 9 November 1894, in Jersey County, a son of John and Harriett Osborne Powel. Powel was a member of the American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Fred A. Duhadway of Carmel, Calif., and two brothers, Roland Powel of Lansing and Leslie Powel of Long Mount, Colo. Services at graveside were in charge of American Legion and VFW.
POWEL. 6 July 1961: Mrs. Eva Mae Powel, wife of Spencer A. Powel, died unexpectedly Sunday evening, 2 July at 7:40 o’clock in fort myers, Florida, where the couple had moved about a month ago to make their home. Friends may call at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home after 3:30 pm today (thurs). Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian church Friday afternoon, 7 July at 2 o’clock with the pastor, Rev. M. Edwards Breed, officiating and interment will be in the Kane cemetery. Mrs. Powel was a daughter of the late Albert and Barbara Boushka Seago and was born at Kane on 3 April 1891. Her age at the time of death was seventy years, two months and twenty-nine days. Mr. and Mrs. Powel resided on a farm near Jerseyville for many years before retiring and moving to Florida. Mrs. Powel was a charter member of Jersey County Home Bureau and was also a member of the First Presbyterian church and the Jerseyville Western Star Chapter. Surviving her in addition to her husband are two Sons, Eldon Powel of Effingham, and Paul Powel of Jerseyville; one daughter, Mrs. Byron (Helen) Cary, Jerseyville; five grandchildren; one brother, Frank Seago of Jerseyville and one sister, Mrs. Franklin Naffziger of Earp, Calif.
POWEL. 24 May 1956: Russell Powel of Phoenix, Ariz.; a former linotype operator for the Jersey County News, died suddenly of a heart attack about midnight Tuesday. Mr. Powel and his wife had resided in Phoenix since 1947 and he was employed as a linotypoe operator for the Phoenix newspaper. Mr. Powel was a son of the late John F. and Harriett Osborne Powel and was born in Jersey County on 7 May 1897. He had marked his fifty-ninth birthday this month. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eva McFain Powel of Phoenix, Ariz., one son, Joseph Russell Powel and one grandson, Eric Powel of Scottsdale, Ariz; one sister, Mrs. Fred A. Duhadway of Jerseyville; three brothers, Leslie E. Powel of Longmont, Colo., Roland N. Powel of Chicago and Harold O. Powel, Jerseyville. The body of Mr. Powel will be returned to Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral arrangements were incomplete Thursday Noon when the Democrat News went to press, but are tentatively set for Saturday afternoon, 26 May at 2:30 o’clock. Mrs. Powel and son, Joseph arrived by plane at Lambert Field Thursday morning and came to Jerseyville.
POWEL. Fort Myers, Florida – Ivy P. Powel, 96, formerly of New Berlin, died at 1:40 pm Wednesday 18 March 1992 at Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center in Fort Myers. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian church of Jerseyville. Born at New Berlin 13 August 1895, she was the daughter of the Late J. W. and Elizabeth (Swain) Brown. Preceding her in death were husbands, Carl Pfeffer, who died in 1960 and Spencer Powel, who died in 1971. Surviving are two sons, Paul E. Powel of Jerseyville and Eldon Powel of Effingham; and a daughter, Helen Cary of Jerseyville. Visitation is from noon Sun. until service time, 2:30 pm at McCullough Funeral Home in New Berlin. The Rev. Simon A. Simon will officiate. Burial is in Pleasant Plains cemetery.
POWEL. source not noted: – Joseph Samuel Powel, born near Rogersville, Tenn. 27 August 1847. Came with parents, the Late O. P. and Sarah E. Powel, to Jersey County where they located on a farm northwest of Jerseyville. Married 1 October 1874 to Antonette Van Horne, who with four sons, James P., George V. H., Spencer A. and Andrew Wilson, three daughters, Mrs. Harry T. Darby, Mrs. Truman A. Schribner and Mrs. Herbert G. Neely survive him. Three children died in infancy. Andrew Wilson in US Navy. Ten grandchildren, four brothers and sisters. Resided on farm near Delhi until five years ago when he came to Jerseyville. When 20 years of age, while at college in Kentucky he joined Presbyterian church. Long member of IOOF Lodge for more than 45 years. Also member of Delhi Camp of Modern Woodmen.Obit #2: source not noted: Joseph S. Powel, aged 71 years and 10 days, died at his home 313 East Exchange St., Jerseyville, Saturday, 7 September 1918, at 7:00 am. Funeral services were held from the Methodist Episcopal church Monday, 9 September at 2:30 pm with Rev. W. S. Neely officiating, assisted by Rev. F. O. Wilson. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. The members of Jerseyville Lodge, No. 53, IOOF attended the funeral in a body. Mr. Powel is survived by his wife, four sons, George, James, Spencer, and Wilson, and three daughters, Mrs. H. G. Neely, Mrs. Truman Scribner and Mrs. Harry Darby, Wilson Powel is in the Navy and was enroute from the Great Lakes Training Station to Norfolk, Virginia, so could not be reached with news of his father’s death. He was here a short time ago, called home by his father’s illness.

Life long resident of Jersey County, born on a farm near Jerseyville, 16 May 1852, daughter of James and Nancy Wilson Van Horn. Married Joseph S. Powel of Jerseyville and ten children born to them. Three children, Russell, Minnie, and Joseph, died in infancy and the following survive: James, George, Spencer, Miss Cora Powel, Mrs. Truman Scribner and Mrs. Herbert Neely, all of Jerseyville and William Powel of Detroit, Mich. 12 grandchildren. POWELL. 20 February 1948: Charles Edward Powell, a former resident of Jersey County, died Saturday 14 February at 1:15 am at his home in Roxana. He had been in failing health for four months. Mr. Powell was born in Effingham but spent his early life in Jersey County. He had resided in East Alton and for the past year had made his home in Roxana. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Cora Powell; two sons, John of Tulsa, OK and William of Roxana; and four daughters, Mrs. Verna Portwood of Eldred, Mrs. Mildred Boradway of East Alton, Mrs. Sylvia Goodpasture of San Francisco, Calif. And Mrs. Ruth Smith of East Alton. He also leaves three brothers, John and Isaac Powell of Fieldon and Edward Powell of Medora, one sister, Mrs. Ida Campbell of Salt Lake City, Utah, and sixteen grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, 16 February at two o’clock at the first Methodist church in East Alton. Rev. B. L. Walkington, pastor of the church, conducted the services and burial was in Valhalla Park.

POWELL. Jerseyville – William Louis Powell, 57, died at 4:40 am today, 1 February 1990 at St. John’s hospital in Springfield. He was an inspector in the cupping department at Olin Corp. in East Alton for 37 years. Born in Kampsville, he was the son of the Late Ernest and Burdette (Puterbaugh) Powell. He married the former Mary Ann Banghart on 2 August 1952, in Hardin, and she survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Cathy Davidson, Jeri Karrick and Peggy Powell, all of Jerseyville; four sons, Kenneth, Alan and Richard Powell, all of Jerseyville and Mark Powell of Greenfield; 10 grandchildren; and two brothers, Gary Powell of St. Charles, MO and Eugene Puterbaugh of Omaha, Neb. A sister, Sue Hill preceded him in death. Visitation is from 4 to 9 pm Friday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville with the Rev. William Hembrow as celebrant. POWELL. Jerseyville – Charles E. Powell, 72, died at 9:40 am Saturday 17 February 1990 at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. He retired from US Post Office in Jerseyville as a mail carrier after 30 years of service and was World War II US Navy veteran. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic church and the Knights of Columbus, both of Jerseyville. Born in Jerseyville, he was the son of the late O. perry and susie (lenz) Powell. Surviving are a sister, Frances Schroeder of Rockford; and a niece, Marilyn Stinnett of Rockford. Visitation is from 7 to 9 pm today at Jacoby-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jerseyville with a wake service 7:30 pm. A funeral mass is at 9:30 am Monday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic church in Jerseyville with the Rev. William Hembrow as celebrant. Military rites will be conducted in Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville by American Legion Post 492 and VFW Post 4528 of Jerseyville, of which he was member. POWELL. 1 June 1967: Mrs. Eva Josephine Powell, who resided at 806 West Spruce, this city, died Friday afternoon, 26 May at 12:18 o’clock at the Jersey Community Hospital where she had been a patient for three weeks. She had been in ill health for sometime. Final rites were conducted by Rev. Louis Purcell, pastor of the first Methodist church, Monday afternoon at two o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation hours were at the Funeral Home. Mrs. Powell was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. McFain and was born in Jerseyville on 14 August 1896. Her age at death was 70 years, 9 months and 12 days. She was the widow of Russell Powell, who for sometime was employed as linotype operator at the Jersey County News. Surviving her are one Son, J. R. Powell of Scottsdale, Ariz., four grandchildren, four brothers, Fred, Robert, Paul and Russell McFain of Jerseyville, and three sisters, Mrs. George Collenberger of Paris, Mrs. Oscar Willis of Montgomery City, Missouri and Mrs. Russell Hall of Waverly.
POWELL. 9 February 1982: The funeral of Vernice Clayton Powell, 75, of Hardin was conducted Tuesday at Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin with burial in the Hardin cemetery. Born 27 December 1906 in Fieldon, he was the son of John and Mary Cope Powell. His survivors are his wife, the former Malissa Peeler; and three sisters, Maurieta Watson, Delta Rush and Bonita Powell, all of Jerseyville. The Calhoun Ambulance Fund and the American Cancer Society have been named as memorials.
POWELL. Jerseyville Republican February 1894: Ora Gilworth married Mr. Powell. She made home with her uncle and aunt, Lewis and Margaret Gilworth of Jerseyville. They went to Florida with her in search of better conditions for her health. She died 25 January 1894. Burial Oak Grove cemetery.
POWELL. 1921: John Powell died at his home, 84 years old. Rev. Jenkins had service. Burial at Oak Grove. Veteran of Civil War and went through fiercest engagements of that conflict. Wounded in action, but refused to go to hospital and continued to lead a company of men in an attack on a strongly fortified point during one the great battles of the war. The place was captured. He was native of Jersey County, Sugar Creek, Richwoods Township.
POWELL. Jersey County Democrat 5 May 1887: George B. Powell, son of John Powell, of Jerseyville, died at home of his parents and was buried from Lebanon Church Sunday, Rev. A. J. Scarrett serving. 20 years of age. Pall bearers: Fred Moody, Will Bell, Phil Wedding, Frank Hanley, Kessy Rowray and Frant Fritz.
POWELL. Clayton “Spud” Powell, 67, of Medora, died at 2:10 pm Saturday, 21 November 1987 at Christian hospital northeast in St. Louis. Powell served in the US Army during World War II and was awarded the bronze star. He was a self-employed farmer for 34 years and retired in 1982. He was born in Fieldon, son of the late Edward and Alice (Woolsey) Powell. On 3 July 1938, he married the former Virginia Tober in St. Charles, Missouri. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Keith Powell of Medora; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Callie Bennett of Medora and Elizabeth Dodge of Bethalto; and a brother, George Powell of Medora. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 pm Tuesday at Targhetta Funeral Home in Medora. Fidelity Masonic Lodge No. 152 of which he was a member, will conduct rites at 8 pm. Funeral services will be at the Funeral Home at 10 am Wednesday with the Rev. Gary Cooper officiating. Burial will be in Medora cemetery, and memorials may be given to the Medora Ambulance Service.

POWERS. 1985: Catherine Margaret powers, 60, of rural Fieldon, died 6 June at Christian hospital northeast. She was born 7 June 1924 in Jersey County to Luella Phipps Powderly and the late John Powderly. She was a member of United Church of Christ in Fieldon and was a past vice president of Fieldon Home Extension Unit. Survivors include her Husband, A. L. “Jack” Powers of Fieldon; daughters Catherine Marie Webster of Hamburg and Mary Margaret Burris of Kirkwood, Missouri; mother Luella Powderly; brother Clyde Powderly of Columbia, Missouri; sisters, Wilma Hughs of Pekin, Mary Lee Chapman of Silver City, N. M. and Jo Ann Ashford of Jerseyville; and several grandchildren. Visitation was 8 June at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The funeral was June 9 at the Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter H. Krebs officiating. Burial was in Grimes cemetery. A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.
POWERS. 1985: Josephine Margaret Powers, 79, of Jerseyville died 8 June at St. Anthony’s hospital in Alton. She was born 9 May 1906 in Jerseyville to the late James Powers and Margaret O’Malley. She was a secretary for the Health and Education Welfare Department for 20 years and retired in 1971. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier church. Survivors include her brother, Frank Powers of Jerseyville, and nieces and nephews. Visitation was 9 June, and the funeral was 10 June at St. Francis Xavier church with the Rev. Powers, 65, of No. 1 South Vale Drive, Jacksonville will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 am at Our Saviour’s church, Jacksonville with burial in Calvary cemetery. She died 2 October at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charlotte Ratliff of Lerna. She was born 8 July 1915 in Jerseyville, a daughter of George and Augusta Dower French. She was employed at the ASCS office in Morgan County for 22 years, retiring in 1975. She was a member of Our Saviour’s Church, Jacksonville Woman’s Club, Berea Unit HEA, and Jolly ‘s. She is survived by three Daughters, Jean Turner of Jacksonville, Judy Smith of Big Spring, Tex. and Mrs. Ratliff; 13 grandchildren; two Sisters, Mary Lou Heitzig of Jerseyville and Dorothy Johnson of Elgin. Her husband, John H. Powers whom she married 5 May 1937, died 6 November 1978. Visitation 4 to 9 pm at the Gillham-Buchanan Funeral Home in Jacksonville here a prayer service will be read at 7 pm. The cancer fund has been named as a memorial.
POWERS. 20 January 1981: Funeral mass for Peter J. Powers, 86, R. 2, Jerseyville was celebrated Monday morning at St. Francis Xavier church with father Patrick Morrow as celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery. His death occurred at 3:05 am 10 January at Garnet’s Chateau. The retired farmer and WWI Army veteran was born 17 October 1894 in Jersey County, a son of Thomas and Mary O’Farrell Powers. His survivors are his wife, the former Magdalena Abeln whom he married in June 1921; a son, James Powers of Jerseyville; four daughters, Mary and Beatrice Powers of Jerseyville; Kathryn Powers of Dekalb and Irene Powers of Bowling Green, KY; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A wake service was read at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. The St. Francis church building fund was named as the memorial.
POWERS. 7 May 1979: Funeral mass for William Franklin Powers, 74, of Grafton was celebrated Monday morning at St. Patrick’s church in Grafton with Father Richard Niebrugge officiating. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery. He died at 6:10 am 4 May at Greenwood Manor Nursing Home. Born 9 May 1904 in Jersey County, he was the son of the Late Ulysses Grant and Catherine Phipps Powers, and was employed at the flour mill. POWERS. 18 May 1972: Final services for Mrs. Helena B. Powers, 89, of 407 South Arch Street were held Sunday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. A. A. Ledebuhr officiating. Her death occurred 11 May at 8:25 pm at Garnet’s Chateau where she had resided for two and a half years. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. She was born 18 April 1883 in Scottville, a daughter of George W. and Martha Jane Drake Richmond. Mrs. Powers was a member of the Order of Eastern Star of Jerseyville and the Woman’s Relief Corps. Her husband was the late William M. Powers. Her survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Stephen Charow of Jerseyville, Mrs. Leonard Dorner , and Mrs. Edward Morgan of Alton and Miss Jeanette Powers of Chicago; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a Brother, Guy W. Richmond of Ashland. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home after 4 pm Saturday. Eastern Star services were conducted in the evening at 8 o’clock.

POWERS. 02 August 1983: Funeral services for Roy L. (Sam) Powers, 76, Shipman, were held at 2 pm 31 July at Gubser’s Funeral Home in Jerseyville, with Rev. Robert Broeder of the Peace United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial was in Grimes-Neely cemetery west of Jerseyville. Powers was born in Jersey County 22 April, 1907 the son of the late Richard and Melinda Decker Powers. He married Frederica Snell 9 July 1930 in Jacksonville. He retired from farming in 1969, having farmed in the Jerseyville and Plainview area. Powers served on the Jersey County Board of Education for 25 years. He is survived by his wife, Frederica Powers, of Shipman; three daughters, Mary Lou Ford and Janet Calame, both of Jerseyville and Linda Bedolli of Pleasant Plains; four Sons, Tom of Jerseyville, Charles of Edwardsville, Bill of Shipman and Jim of Plainview. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill Powers of Peoria and a Sister, Alice Page of Pacific Palisades, Calif. He was preceded in death by three sons and two sisters. The Disabled American Veterans has been designated as a memorial.
POWERS. 17 May 1972: Funeral services were held 15 May in Detroit, Mich, for Gordon Powers, 66 year old resident of that city whose death occurred on 12 May. Mr. Powers, who retired a year ago from the employ of Ford Motor Company, had been ill. He was a son of the late William and Nona Reed Powers and was born and reared in Jersey County. Mr. Powers is survived by his wife, one son, a daughter, four grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Seaman Schaeffer of Piasa and a brother, Gene Powers of Detroit. He was a nephew of Everett Reed of Fidelity.
POWERS. 25 May 1967: James Douglas Powers of 404 Lincoln Ave., Jerseyville, died at seven fifty-one o’clock Thursday night at Barnes hospital in St. Louis where he had been a patient for ten days. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where services were held at two o’clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. Carlton Christenson, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiated and burial was in Grimes cemetery. Mr. Powers was born in Jersey County, 3 January 1890, a son of the late James D. and Pauline Schaaf Powers. He had been an employee of the cast shop at Olin-Mathieson Corp. His survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Walter Jay of Jennings, Missouri; Mrs. Edna Mae Strebel and Mrs. Natalie Springman of Jerseyville; two sons, Rmc Richard L. Powers of the US Navy, stationed at San Diego, Calif, and Arthur D. Powers of Otterville; one brother, Lewis Powers of Fieldon; sixteen grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. His parents, his wife, and one son, Herschel, preceded him in death.
POWERS. 22 February 1973: Mrs. Frank J. (Nellie Sunderland) Powers, 71, retired assistant manager of Sunderland Motor Company, died at two o’clock Wednesday morning, 21 February at the Jersey Community Hospital where she had been a patient for the past few days. Her health had been impaired for sometime and she had been hospitalized on several occasions. Visitation hours will be held after two o’clock this (thursday) afternoon at the First Baptist church in Jerseyville with Rev. Everett B. Chambers officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs. Powers, a lifelong resident of Jerseyville, is survived by her husband, Frank J. Powers; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd W. Sunderland; two brothers, Marcus and Lloyd Sunderland; and four sisters, Mrs. Mabel Downey, Mrs. Florence Stelle, Mrs. Ruth Peirson, and Gertrude Sunderland. Her marriage to Mr. Powers took place on 19 August 1931. She was a member of the First Baptist church, PEO chapter, and the Tried and True Sunday school class of the church.
POWERS. Fieldon – Andrew Lawrence “Jack” Powers, 70, died unexpectedly at 8:48am Thursday, 2 May 1991 at home. He was a self-employed grain farmer for 25 years, and retired in 1984 from the maintenance department at Olin Brass Mill in East Alton. Memberships included the Jerseyville Elks and Moose Lodges. Born in Jerseyville on 30 January 1921 he was the son of the late Lewis and Goldie (Devening) Powers. He married the former Catherine M. “Kit” Powderly on 4 December 1940 in Elsberry, Missouri, and she died on 6 June 1985. Surviving are two daughters, Catherine M. Webster of Hamburg and Mary M. Bennett of Kirkwood, Missouri; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Pauline Martin of Jerseyville; and three brothers, Kenneth and John Powers, both of Fieldon, and Charles Powers of Hardin. A brother, James Lewis Powers, preceded him in death. Visitation is from 4 to 9 pm today at Jacoby-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are at 10 am Saturday. Burial is in Grimes-Neely cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or American heart association.
POWERS. Died 00-00-1970. undated: Fieldon – Gary Lee Powers, 13 year old son of Mr and Mrs. Wesley Powers of Fieldon was found dead at his home Saturday. He was born 10 September 1957, in Jerseyville. In addition to his parents, surviving are three brothers, Kenneth, Carl and David all at home; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Godar of Hardin; and paternal step-grandfather and grandmother, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Miles of Fieldon.

Funeral from St. Francis church. Rev. Lee. He was son of Michael and Bridget Powers, born 1 January 1862 on farm 5 miles west of Jerseyville where he died on 2 January 1907. Attended district schools. Married on 24 August 1886 to Miss Margaret O’Maley of Jersey County. Eleven children, nine of whom with the widow survive. His brother, John Powers, a stock dealer of east St. Louis, is only surviving member of the family of Michael and Bridget Powers. A man of strong convictions and took an active interest in policies of his political party. Was on County Board of Supervisors. Helped to manage Poor Farm. Funeral 4 Jan. Pallbearers: J. C. POWERS. Emma Louise Powers, 65, of Grafton died 31 July 1988 at her residence. She was born 20 May 1923 in Fieldon to the late Louis Vahle and Blanche Williams. She Married Arthur “Dutch” Powers on 8 November 1952 in Pocahontas, Arkansas. Survivors include her husband, Arthur of Grafton; Sons, Richard Atchinson of Fieldon, Arthur L. Powers of Atlanta, Georgia, and Jeffrey Powers of Jerseyville; daughters, Regina Cambron of Brighton, Antoinette Darr of Carrollton; and 11 grandchildren. Funeral services were 3 August 1988 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville with pastor William Schmidt of Carrollton officiating. Burial was in Fieldon cemetery. The American Lung Association and Vahle Terrace have been chosen as the memorials.
POWERS. 10 September 1953: Mrs. Mary Josephine Powers, wife of Walter Powers of Jerseyville, died at the family home Sunday evening, 6 September at seven thirty-five o’clock following an illness of several years duration. The deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Hart and was born in Stone City, Iowa 15 October 1880. Her age at the time of death was seventy-two years, ten months and twenty-one days. Mrs. Powers is survived by her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Louis Witt of St. Louis; four sons, James Powers of Overland, Missouri, John H. Powers of Jacksonville, William F. Powers of Jennings, MO and Robert E. Powers of Godfrey; eleven grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. James Bray of Jerseyville. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors Lodge of Fidelity. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral services were held at nine-thirty o’clock Wed morning, 9 September at St. Francis Xavier church. Requiem mass was celebrated by Father Thomas Gorman, and interment was in St. Francis Xavier cemetery.
POWERS. 1986: Frank Powers, 90, who was known locally as Mr. Democrat, died at his home on North State Street, Jerseyville, on April 11. Powers served as chairman of the Democrat Central Committee for many years and was associated in retail auto sales at Sunderland Motor Co. until he retired. He was a lifetime member of the Jerseyville Elks Lodge, serving as chairman of the Elk Christmas baskets for more than 30 years. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier church and a Third Degree Knights of Columbus member. He married Nellie Sunderland 19 August 1931 and she died 21 February 1973. He is survived by nieces and nephews. A funeral mass was celebrated 15 April at St. Francis Xavier church.

His survivors include his wife, the former Katherine French whom he married 5 May 1937 at Medora; three daughters, Mrs. Jean A. Turner and Mrs. Judy K. Smith of Jacksonville and Mrs. Charlotte L. Ratliff of Mattoon; 12 grandchildren. One sister, Mary Witt of Hazelwood, MO, and three brothers, James of O’fallon, Missouri, William F. Hazelwood, Missouri and Robert E. of Alton.

POWERS. Jerseyville Republican August 1911: William M. Powers was born in Jersey County, 12 August 1892 and died at his home five miles west of Jerseyville on Sunday 30 July 1911 at 3 am, age 18 years, 11 months and 18 days. Having contracted a severe cold in the early spring, he went west spending considerable time with friends in Nebraska. Here he took the measles and continued to grow worse and returned home 18 June. He was the son of Margaret and James Powers who for many years was a member and Chairman of the Board of Supervisors. He leaves to mourn their loss a sorrowing mother, three brothers, and four sisters besides a host of friends. To know him was to love him. Poem – Perhaps he was just like the others that die by the millions each year, perhaps other fathers and mothers have held their lost ones as dear. But this is our loss and our sorrow and ours are the hearts that are tried. We shant have our dear one tomorrows, for the hearse was hitched outside. So gladly and bravely you bore him, so happy we were when he came; such triumphs we dreamed about for him, such glory and honor and fame. We felt that no future could flout him, no ill and no failure betide, and now we must live on without him, for the hearse was hitched outside. I’m glad that he came for he’s left us a memory lasting and true.

She was born 12 mary 1901 in Jersey County, daughter of Matt and Caroline Metzdorf Schreiber. She was a member of St. James Catholic church in Decatur and Royal Neighbors of America. Her husband, Antone Powers, died in l973. She is survived by a son and daughter, James A. Powers os Mt. Zion and Mrs. Patricia Mundy of Decatur; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
