ROACH. Anna B. Roach, 24 years, 9 months, died at Carthage, Missouri, October 13, 1895. It is with a sad heart that we record the death of one known and loved by all, and who but a short time ago was a happy girl in our midst. Still in life’s mourning with all that is brightest and best at her command and the future full of brilliant promise, she was taken from us. The caresses of her little children, the tender care of devoted parents, and a loving husband; all availed naught beside the decree of the master-“come up higher.” Mrs. Anna B. Roach, nee McClure, was born January 13, 1871; reared in Jerseyville, graduated in 1888, from our high school. She married to Cornelius Roach, June 13, 1889. They moved to Carthage, Missouri, where Mr. Roach became editor and proprietor of the Carthage Daily and Weekly Democrat. They have 3 little daughters, Romaine, Mana and Eulalie. Her remains were brought to Jerseyville for interment. The funeral services being held at the Methodist church, Wednesday October 16, at 2:30 pm; flowers in profusion decked the altar, loving tributes from her many friends. The services, conducted by Rev. N. Crow, were appropriate and impressive. The alumni association marched in a body to the church. The pall bearers were the boys of her graduation class. So tenderly, reverently, amid the friends of her girlhood we laid her to rest in “god’s acre” her mission on earth over, her life’s labour done-but on the glad resurrection morn, we shall meet our glorified Anna with the same loving smile of old, in that land where there are no tears, no sickness, no tears. “Not lost, but gone before” a friend
ROACH. Died 11-1903. David Roach, 36, son of David J. Roach, died in Jerseyville at the home of his father. He was born in Fidelity Township, December 8, 1867 and was forth son in family. Graduate of Jerseyville High School in 1888. Moved to Carthage, Missouri and was in the news paper business with his brother. He became ill and went to Arizona, then col funeral from St. Francis church with burial in church cemetery.
ROACH. Died 23-07-1989. Edward A. Roach, 81, died at 8:29 pm Sunday, July 23, 1989, at his residence. Roach retired from farming in 1976. Born in Jersey County, his parents were the late Dennis & Nora (Fitzpatrick) Roach. He married Helen (Dilling) September 12, 1959, in Alton and she survives. Also surviving, are 1 sister Marie Roach of Jerseyville; and 2 brothers, Cornelius “Neal” Roach of Jerseyville and Paul Roach of Carrollton. 2 sisters, Elizabeth and Beatrice Roach, preceded him in death. Visitation is 4-8 pm Tuesday with a prayer service at 7 pm at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A funeral mass is 10 am Wednesday at ss Peter and Paul Catholic church in Alton with Rev. Peter Donohoe as celebrant. Burial is in St. Francis cemetery.
ROACH. Died 21-01-1957. Ella J. Roach, 70 years, 10 months, died at 4:30 am Monday January 21, at St. Anthony hospital in St. Louis where she had been a patient for the past 2 weeks. She had been in ill health for quite some time. Mrs. Roach was a daughter of Charles Krueger and the late Elizabeth (Krause) Krueger of Jerseyville and was born in this county March 21, 1886. The decedent is survived by husband William a Roach who engaged in the shoe business in Jerseyville for a number of years; 1 son, Russell Roach of Jerseyville who continues the business started by his father; 3 grandchildren, Terrence, Jerome and Thomas Roach of this city; her father, and 2 sisters, Miss Katie Krueger of St. Louis and Mrs. Louise Rice of Springfield. Mrs. Roach was a member of Steelman Camp, Royal Neighbors of America. The 51st wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. Roach occurred January 16. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral services were held at 9:30 am Thursday at St. Francis Xavier church. Requiem mass was celebrated by Father Thomas Gorman and burial was in St. Francis cemetery.
ROACH. Died 1953. J. A. Roach, 74 years, 2 months, 19 days, uncle of Miss Marie Roach of Jerseyville, died Saturday am. Mr. Roach, of New York City, had suffered a stroke in May, 1950 and had ben in ill health since that time. He was a son of the late David & Mary (McGillicuddy) Roach and was born in Jerseyville on October 14, 1878. Mr. Roach graduated from Jerseyville High School and later went to St. Louis where he was employed. For a number of years he was employed by Chase Bank Company in New York City and had retired about 3 years ago. He was the surviving member of a family of 9 children. Mr. Roach is survived by 1 daughter, Miss Patrica Roach of New York City. 1 son David Roach, was killed in Europe shortly after the close of WWII. Funeral services were held Wednesday am January 7, in New York City and burial was in that city.
ROACH. Died 29-09-1980. John T. “Jack” Roach, 55, a well known Alton attorney died September 29. He was found dead Monday pm along the 200 hundred block of Blair Ave. of an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound. Roach had served as City Attorney of Alton in the early 1960’s and again from 1973 through 1976 and was a former Madison County Assistant State’s Attorney and a past president of the Alton-Wood River Bar Association. Born in Jacksonville, he was a son of Etta (Henessey) Roach of Jacksonville and the late John M. Roach. He was a member of several civic and fraternal organizations and bar associations. His survivors are his mother; his wife, Carol (Roy) Roach; 7 sons and 2 daughters; 4 grandchildren; and 1 brother Robert W. of Jacksonville. A funeral mass was celebrated at St. Mary Catholic church, Alton, thur noon. Memorials may be given to the Jack Roach Memorial Scholarship fund at Marquette High School.
ROACH. Died 12-1926. Leonard V. Roach, 49, died at rochester, MN. Funeral at St. Roch’s Catholic church in St. Louis. Born and reared in Jersey County, he was a son of the late Mr. & Mrs. David Roach. He leaves his widow, 2 children, 5 brothers, Cornelius Roach, Eugene B. Roach, Joseph A. Roach of Memphis, Tennessee, Thomas Roach of St. Louis, Dennis Roach of Jerseyville, and 1 sister Mrs. Charles Gaffney.
ROACH. Died 1910. Margaret A. Roach, 65, died at home in St. Louis. She was born November 1, 1845 in County Limerick, Ireland the daughter of Terrence & Margaret Roach who came to America when she was 3 years of age. They lived in Chester, Conn. until 1857, then came west and settled on a farm 7 miles east of Jerseyville. In 1872 she engaged in the milliner’s business in Jerseyville, and moved to Alton. In 1903 she moved to St. Louis. She leaves 2 sisters Mrs. D. C. Terry of St. Louis and Mrs. Daniel Reedy of Jerseyville; 1 brother, Terrence Roach of Jerseyville. Funeral from St. Francis church. Pall bearers were her 6 nephews: Terrence, Daniel, Robert Reeedy, Thomas Leonard and Augustus Roach.
ROACH. Died 19-08-1984. Russell Francis Roach, 74, who owned and operated Roach Shoe Store here for many years, died Sunday, August 19, at his home in Downey, California. Born June 18, 1910, in Jerseyville, the son of William a & Ella (Kreuger) Roach, he married Mary J. McIntyre, February 26, 1938, in Jerseyville. He was employed for a period of time at the Wedge Bank in Alton, then returned to Jerseyville where he owned and operated Roach’s Shoe Store. He was active in Knights of Columbus, Elks and Moose. Roach served as Republican Chairman of Jersey County, Probation Officer of Jersey County, member of the Jersey Planning Commission, member of the Jerseyville Library Board of Directors, and President of the Jersey County Historical Society. He was a lifelong member of St. Francis Xavier church in Jerseyville. Surviving besides his wife are 3 sons, Dr. Terrence of Huntington Beach, California, Dr. Jerome of Downey, California, and Thomas of Indianapolis, Indiana; and 6 grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help church in Downey, with burial in All Souls Catholic Cemetery in Long Beach, California. Memorials may be given to Our Lady of Perpetual Help church.
ROACH. Died 04-1927. Thomas F. Roach, 53, of St. Louis died there. Formerly of Jersey County, he was the son of Mr. & Mrs. David J. Roach. He leaves his wife, Theresa (Schulte) Roach; 4 sons, Wm. D, Eugene G, Thomas F, and Paul Roach; 1 daughter, Mary Agness; 4 brothers, Dennis of Jerseyville, Eugene B. of Carthage, Missouri, Cornelius of Kansas City, Joe of Memphis, TN; 1 sister Mrs. Charles Gaffney of Fidelity; 1 brother, Leonard preceded him in death. Funeral was from St. Pius church in St. Louis. Burial was in Clavary cemetery.
ROACH. Died 03-1919. Wm. T. Roach, formerly of Jerseyville, died at his home in Carthage, Missouri. He was the son of Mr. & Mrs. David Roach, deceased of Jerseyville. He was a member of the first class to graduate from Jerseyville High School, assistant editor of Jersey County Democrat. He leaves his wife, 6 brothers, Dennis Roach of Jerseyville, Leonard, Thomas and Augustine of St. Louis, Eugene B. Roach of Carthage and Cornelius Roach of Jefferson City, Missouri and 1 sister Mrs. Charles Gaffney near Fidelity.
ROADES. Died 11-01-1928. Nettie B. Roades, 77, resident of Jersey County of more than 50 years, died January 11 at the home of her son, Charles Roades, in Alton. She was a daughter of Charles & Charlotte Carpenter, and was born on a steamboat on the Mississippi River between Keokuk, Iowa and Alton, Illinois. Nov 1, 1851. When quite young, she married John W. Anderson. There were 2 children, 1 dying in infancy, the other being Mrs. Charles Briggs of Delhi. In 1878, she married William Roades, a pioneer of Jersey County. There were 3 children of this union: Charles Roades of Alton, Alfred Roades of St. Louis, 1 daughter died at age 2. 1 brother, George Carpenter of Chautauqua and 1 sister Annie Osburn of Miami, OK; and 12 grandchildren. Mrs. Roades united with Elsah Methodist church 40 years ago being oldest member at the time of her death. Burial in Elsah cemetery with Rev. Johnson of Kokomo, IN and Rev. Daniel S. Ferlach. Sisters of Silver Moon Lodge of Rebekas of Elsah took part in the service. Pall bearers were: Emil Fischer, Leslie Nugent, Juntin Brock, Frank Sweeny, Henry Reister, and Wm. Smith.
ROADY. Died 02-03-1924. Campbell G. Roady, 71, died at home in Fidelity, March 2. The body was taken to Kane Church of Christ for services. He came to Jersey County in 1864 following the end of the Civil War, and has lived in the county since then. The native of Knoxville, TN , leaves 5 daughters, Mary Grant, Charlotte Daniels of Alton, Mrs. Augusta Baker of Cambridge, Ohio, Mrs. Alice Downs and Mrs. Lucy Lawrence of Jersey County; 3 sons, N. A. Roady and J. C. Roady of Hamburg, and S. T. Roady of Jersey County. His wife preceded him in death in August 1919.
ROADY. Died 29-11-1952. Charles Henry Roady, 83, of Alton died Saturday afternoon, November 29, at the Mather Nursing Home in Alton where he had been a patient for 2 weeks. Mr. Roady was born at Fidelity on July 22, 1869 and spent his early life in that vicinity. He had resided in Alton since 1916 and prior to that had been in Oklahoma where he engaged in farming for a number of years. The aged man is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nellie (Hughes) Roady, 3 children Mrs. George T. Wilson of Nashville, Tennessee, Mrs. Randall Clark of Wood River and Paul Roady of Alton; 1 brother, John Roady of Jerseyville, and 2 sisters, Mrs. Grant Goodwin of Medora and Mrs. Cleaver Strunk of Bunkerhill. He also leaves 3 grandchildren and 2 g-grandchildren. Funeral rites were held Tuesday December 2 at 2 pm at Streeper Funeral Home in Alton and burial was in Upper Alton cemetery.
ROADY. Died 27-02-1983. Dawn Louise Roady, 16, daughter of Howard & Pamela (Wingo) Roady of Jerseyville, died as a result of an accident of Route 16 at Centennial Rd. about 7:15 pm. A coroner’s inquest is pending. A memorial service was held at First Baptist church in Jerseyville. She was born June 9, 1966 in San Bernardino, California and was a student at Jersey Community High School where she participated in the glee club and track team. Besides her parents she is survived by her maternal grandmother, Georgia Wingo of Portland, OR, maternal g-grandfather, Thad Reed of Boyd, Texas; paternal Grandparents, Effie Springman, Jerseyville and Mr. & Mrs. Pearl Roady of Granite City; 2 Brothers, Wayne Roady of Fort Knox, Kentucky and Kyle Roady, Great Lakes, and half brothers, Michael, Rodney and Rickey Roady, all of Portland, OR. Memorials may be given to First Baptist church.
ROADY. Died 12-1976. Edward L. Roady, 61, died Monday. Arrangements have been completed and friends may call from 3-9 pm today and until noon Thursday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Visitation will continue from noon until time of service at 2 pm Thursday at First Baptist church of Jerseyville. Rev. Everett Chambers will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery.
ROADY. Died 27-12-1977. Edward L. Roady, 61, of Jerseyville died unexpectedly at 11:15 pm on December 27 at his home. Roady was a sales representative for Illinois Office Supply Company. Services were held at First Baptist church of Jerseyville on December 30 with Rev. Everett Chambers officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He was born in Alton on July 26, 1915, a son of John & Maude (Day) Roady. Roady was a member of First Baptist church, Masonic Lodge 394 AF & AM, Scottish Rite Bodies Valey of Southern Illinois, Ainad Temple of East St. Louis, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks Lodge and Westlake Country Club, Jerseyville. He served in WWII from March 13, 1942 to August 19, 1945 and served again in the Korean conflict from September 8, 1950 to January 30, 1952. He was a member of the soc of the Fifth Div, Company B, Fifth Medical Battalion. His survivors are his widow, Ruth H. Roady whom he married in Oct., 1974; 1 son, Thomas W. Roady of St. Louis and 1 sister Mrs. Verna Beiser of Jerseyville; nieces and nephews.
ROADY. Died 15-05-1953. John A. Roady, 79 years, 5 months, 6 days, father of County Clerk Edward L. Roady, died at 1:30 am Friday, May 15 at Alton Memorial hospital. Where he had been a patient for some time. The deceased was a son of the late John & Rebecca (Jones) Roady and was born in Fidelity, December 9, 1873. Mr. Roady was a retired glass worker. Surviving the deceased are his wife, Mrs. Maude (Day) Roady; 1 son, Edward L. Roady of Jerseyville; 1 daughter, Mrs. Edward Bieser of Jerseyville; 2 sisters, Mrs. Cleaver Strunk of Bunker Hill and Mrs. Grant Goodwin of Medora; 9 grandchildren and 5 g-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, Sunday, May 17, at 2:30 pm day light saving time. Rev. M. Edwards Breed, pastor of First Presbyterian church, officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.
ROADY. Died 03-1982. Lela Roady, 84, died at 11 pm Thursday at Lakeshore Manor Nursing Home in Decatur. Before retiring, she had taught elementary classes for 20 years in the Greene County School District. She was a 50 year member and former past matron of the Elizabeth Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star in Kane. Born in Jersey County, daughter of the late Theodore & Mary (Petton) Williams, she married Thomas G. Roady on June 29, 1915. He died in Sept., 1962. Surviving are 2 sons, Dr. jom Jr. of carbondale and Elston E. of Tallahassee, Florida; 1 daughter, Elizabeth Rowden of Decatur; 7 grandchildren; 14 g-grandchildren; and 1 sister Margaret King of Winchester. Visitation well be from 4-8 pm Saturday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Services will be held at 2:30 pm Sunday, Charles A. Scoggins officiating. Burial will be in Kane cemetery. Memorials may be given to Church of Christ in Kane, where she was a member and Boyd Memorial hospital.
ROADY. Died 19-05-1966. Maude D. Roady, 85, one of the well-known older residents of Jerseyville, died Thursday May 19, at 3:40 at Jersey Community hospital where she had been a patient for 2 days. Mrs. Roady had been in failing health for 2-3 weeks before entering the hospital. Visitation hours were at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Final rites were held there Saturday May 21, at 2 pm. Rev. Carlton G. Christenson, officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. She was a daughter of the late William A. & Sara E. (Sandidge) Day and was born in Jersey County June 4, 1880. Surviving are 1 son Edward Roady, and 1 daughter, Mrs. Edward Beiser, both of Jerseyville, 9 grandchildren, and 17 g-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Roady, 1 son William A. Roady and 1 daughter, Mrs. Margret Lucille Gaber.
ROADY. Died 28-03-1980. Raymond T. Roady, 73, Rural Route 1 Bethalto, died at 4 pm March 28, at Scott Air Force base hospital. Roady was born September 6, 1906 in Jersey County, the son of the Late Solomon & Rose (Franz) Roady. He married Corothy (Willis) Roady February 22, 1944 in Granite City. He was a retired Master Sergeant in the US Air Force, having served in WWII and Korea. He is survived by his wife, 1 brother Roady of Granite City; and 2 sisters, Florence Watson of Brighton and Rosetta Jacobs, Bunker Hill. Funeral services were held March 31 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville with Rev. Garold Cooper officiating. Burial was in Kane cemetery. Memorials may be given to charity of one’s choice.
ROADY. Died 02-1905. Mrs. Rebecca Roady, 86, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Moore in Fidelity. Funeral from Methodist church Fidelity, Rev. Duff of Rockbridge officiating. Rebecca long was born September 13, in Wash County, Tennessee, she married Nathaniel Roady June 8, 1841. They were parents of 12 children, 10 survive: (only 8 named) Christian, of Clingon, Missouri, Sarah E. Moore of Fidelity, Eliza Moore of Michmond, Missouri, Thomas J. and Peter of Scranton, Kansas, Henry of Denver, Colorado, Fannie Clower of Kemper, Illinois, and Alfred S. of Rockbridge, Illinois; 59 grandchildren, 64 g-grandchildren; 2 brothers, John Long, of Standish, Missouri and Columbus Long of Honden, Missouri; and 1 sister Mrs. Christian Williams of Kane, Illinois. She came to Illinois in 1852 and settled on a farm near Fidelity which was her home until the last few days. Her husband preceded her in death 15 years ago, and she was buried beside him in Oak Grove cemetery. Pall bearers were her 6 sons.
ROADY. Died 1984. Sarah B. Roady, 76, formerly of the Piasa area died at St. Elizabeth hospital in Granite City. Born in Fidelity Township, daughter of the late John & Myrtle (Ryan) White. She married Solomon Roady in 1926, and he died in 1934. She leaves 4 sons, Solomon of Brighton, Virgil of Godfrey, Joyce of Dover, Tennessee, and Kenneth of Pennsylvania; 13 grandchildren, and 22 g-grandchildren. Burial in Brighton cemetery.
ROADY. Died 02-04-1974. Mrs. Edward (Virginia) Roady, 60, of 209 Bar Ave., Jerseyville, died unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack at 5 pm Tuesday, April 2, in St. Louis. The Roadys were at the home of a friend, Mrs. Peter J. Lane, nee Kathleen Frlming, whose husband died March 30, Mrs. Roady was assisting at the home. She and her sister, Mrs. Blanche Wiseman, had decided to take sandwiches to Mrs. Lane who was at the martuary. Mrs. Wiseman, who had gone upstairs, – incomplete info.
ROBB. Died 03-1926. Mrs. Capitola Robb, wife of Alex C. Robb, died at home in Robb apartments. Funeral from Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Christian Science Readers were in charge of ceremony. Entombment was in Oak Grove mausoleum. She was a daughter of Levi M. & Sarah (Walk) Davis. Born in bee Creek, Illinois. She married Alex Robb on June 20, 1894. Surviving are 1 brother, John W. Davis of St. Louis; 3 nephews, Edgar and Levi Davis of St. Louis and Robert Davis of Louisiana.
ROBB. Died 18-01-1919. Pvt. Francis V. Robb, 27, son of the late Mr. & Mrs. George Robb of Jerseyville died January 18, at Camp Hancock, GA. His sister Stella Robb was with him. He had been service since December 05, 1917. He leaves his sister Stella, his uncle and aunt, Mr. & Mrs. A. C. Robb, and many friends.
ROBB. Died 11-1904. John L. Robb, 74, died at the home of his niece, Miss Elizabeth McKabney southwest of Jerseyville. Funeral was from McKabney home. Dr C. Nash officiated and burial was in Kane cemetery.
ROBBINS. Died 03-12-1982. Marie Veronica Robbins, 74, of 54 Larch Lane, Wood River, died at 10:15 pm December 3 at St. Anthony hospital. Born in Paragould, Arkansas, daughter of the late John Bernard & Magdalena (Dachs) Kifchoff, she married William Louis Robbins on December 1, 1927, in Paragould, Arkansas. He died October 10, 1980. Surviving are 2 daughters, Marjorie Steckel of Jerseyville and Louise Crowson of Wood River; 5 grandchildren; 6 g-grandchildren; and 3 brothers, William Kirchoff of Dubuque, IA, Henry Kirchoff of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Frand Kirchoff of Washington, DC. Marks Mortuary held services December 6 with Revs David Peters and Dan Lindemulder officiating. Burial was in Wanda Cemetery, South Roxana. Memorials may be given to charity of one’s choice.
ROBEEN. Died 12-08-1981. Frank Herman Robeen, 79, of 401 Maple St. Jerseyville, died unexpectedly at 9:50 pm August 12 at Jersey Community hospital where he was taken after becoming ill at home. Services were conducted Saturday am at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville with burial in Valhalla Memorial Park. He was born August 30, 1901 in Calhoun County, a son of John & Mary Retzer Robeen and was a retired trucker. His survivors are his wife, Opal (Maines) Robeen; 3 sons, Ralph of Delhi, Donald of Escondido, California and William of Dow; 2 daughters, Frances Snyders of Jerseyville and Mary Ann Antrobus of Alton; 1 brother, Andrew Robeen of Hardin; 3 sisters, Gertrude Jones, Jacksonville, Theresa Molle, Golden Eagle, Josephine Fortschnieder, Brussels; 13 grandchildren and 8 g-grandchildren.
ROBEEN. Died 15-03-1976. Randall Andrew Robeen, 18, son of Mrs. Phyllis Medling of Fieldon and the late Mark Robeen, died March 15. He was found in the Spanky Tavern owned by his mother and step-father shortly after 6 pm March 15 and was pronounced dead on arrival at Boyd Memorial hospital in Carrollton. An inquest is pending. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 9:30 am March 18, at Holy Ghost Catholic church in Jerseyville with Rev. Robert L. Heintz, celebrant. Interment will be in St. Francis Xavier cemetery. ROBERTS. Died 1959. Carl Richard Roberts, 38, father of 8 children, died unexpectedly Sunday at his home in Jerseyville. He was born November 11, 1921, a son of Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Roberts of Carrollton. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy (McGowin) Roberts; 4 sons, Richare Leon, Terry Joe, Michael D and Eric David; 4 daughters, Karla Kay, Pamela Jane, Susan Lavada, and Sandra; 1 stepson Albert Hagen of Alton, and 1 stepdaughter, Barbara Hagen, Jerseyville, his parents; 4 sisters, Mrs. Veneta Tribble and Joan Roberts, Carrollton; Mrs. Hilda Carter, Jerseyville and Mrs. Lola Pearl Elmore, Greenfield; and 2 Brothers, Ernest, Carrollton and Earl William, White Hall. Funeral rites were conducted Wednesday at 2 pm in Gospel Tabernacle by Rev. Louis Kappler. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.
ROBERTS. Died 08-1928. David H. Roberts, 66, died at his home, 306 Franklin. A native of Morseville (Morrisville, Madison County ?) New York. His parents were Hugh & Gayner Lewis Roberts. Funeral at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev. T. J. Roady of Kane officiated and burial was in Oak Grove. Surviving are his widow, Nellie; 3 sons, Edward and Hugh of Jerseyville and Lester Roberts of Kansas City; 2 Daughters, Myrtle Floche of Milwaukee, WI, and Dorothy Roberts at home; 7 grandchildren.
ROBERTS. Died 04-1927. Squire F. M. Roberts, father of Homer Roberts of Jerseyville, and a well-known Carrollton resident, died at his home in Carrollton on Tues. Mr. Roberts had been in apparently good health and his death came suddenly.
ROBERTS. Died 11-1913. Frank Roberts, 22, was laid to rest in Hartford cemetery Tuesday am. Three weeks ago he had visited that same cemetery for the burial of his aunt, Mrs. Alex Jones. He died at St. Joseph hospital in Alton last Friday, of typhoid fever. A telegram was sent to his parents Mr. & Mrs. Henry Franz of Pollard Arkansas., telling them of their son’s illness. Mr. Franz wired back that his wife had left a few days previous to go to the bedside of her daughter, Mrs. Efie Sizer, who was dying at Elizabeth, CO. After his death a were was sent to Mrs. franz and asked if his body should be held until her return. She wired back, “Effie is dying, if I can do any good now, it is here.”
ROBERTS. L. D. Roberts Jr., died in Idaho. Funeral services were held at 3 pm Wednesday afternoon, November 11, at Gates Funeral Home in Kansas City, Kansas. The deceased was born in Jerseyville, a son of Mr. & Mrs – incomplete info.
ROBERTS. Leo Cory Roberts, 41, died Tuesday, February 28, 1922. He was born in Pittsfield, Illinois, March 21, 1881, the son of James W. & Rose E. Roberts. With his parents he early came to Jerseyville which has since been his home. He was educated in the schools of Jersey County, graduating from Jerseyville High School in the class of 1899 of which he was valedictorian. After teaching 2 terms at Jefferson school in Elsah Township he took a business course in St. Louis, Missouri, and was employed as a typist for several years. He was employed at Mercantile Trust Company of St. Louis, the confidence of whose officials he enjoyed to a high degree. During his long illness he was ever patient and endured intense suffering at times with fortitude and without complaining. He was a member of the Presbyterian church of Jerseyville. Funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian church on Thursday, March 2, at 2:30 pm, with Rev. H. S. Farrill, officiating. Interment in Oak Grove cemetery.
ROBERTS. Died 01-10-1976. Lorin L. Roberts, 41, of Rural Route 4 Jerseyville, principal of Kane & Fieldon elementary schools, died at 3:35 pm October 1, at Mt. St. Rose hospital, St. Louis, Missouri. Roberts suffered a cerebral aneurysm February 15, and has been hospitalized since. He was born June 18, 1935 in Louisiana, Missouri, the son of the late Russell B. Roberts & Minerva (Gilbert) Roberts who resides in Pleasant Hill. He was employed by comm unit 100 in 1958 at Jersey Community High School where he was a teacher and football coach. He was later principal at Kane and Fieldon. He was a member of the Illinois Principal’s Association. He was a member of the Christian church of Jerseyville and the Elks Lodge 954. He is survived by his mother; his wife Linda, whom he married on January 25, 1969 in Downers Grove; 1 daughter, Mindi, 4; 1 son, Michael, 1; and 1 sister, Mrs. Ray (Wylvia) Miller of Glenwood. Private funeral services were held at 11 am October 3 at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. – incomplete info.
ROBERTS. Died 09-12-1969. Mabel Roberts, 85, a Jerseyville resident, died Monday, 2:50 am December 9, at Garnet’s Chateau where she had resided in recent weeks. She had been in failing health for sometime. She was a daughter of the late Terry & Margaret (Falwell) Burch and was born in Fort Scott, KS, on March 24, 1883. She had resided in Jerseyville and the Kane area since she was 11 years old. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 pm at First Baptist church of Jerseyville, where she had been a member. Rev. Carlton G. Christenson, officiated at the services and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation was held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville and the church. Mrs. Roberts, widow of F. Homer Roberts, is survived by 3 daughters, Mrs. Reba Kanallakan of Jerseyville, Mrs. Gladys Nickens of Godfrey and Mrs. Audrey Kunz of Fosterburg, 2 sons, Row Roberts and Reuel Roberts of Jerseyville; 16 grandchildren; 19 g-grandchildren; 1 brother, Willard Burch of Alton; and 4 sisters, Mrs. Howard Stampe of Shipman, Mrs. floyd Richey of Hartford, Mrs. Mae Naugle of Ava, Missouri, and Mrs. Grace Pedigo of Salem, OR. Mrs. Roberts was a 50 year member of Jerseyville Chapter No. 656 Order of Eastern Star, and held memberships in the Royal Neighbors of America and Woman’s Relief Corps.
ROBERTS. Died 13-02-1984. Reuel H. Roberts, 65, died at 5:47 pm February 13 at Christian hospital northeast. Born May 17, 1918 in Jersey County, he was a son of Homer & Mabel (Burch) Roberts. He was a mold maker at Owens-Illinois Glass Company where he worked for 37 years, retiring in Oct., 1980. He was a member of First Baptist church and past district commissioner of the Piasa Council, Boy Scouts of America. He was a scout leader for many years and was a member of the American Glass Blowers Union. Services were conducted at First Baptist church Thursday, afternoon by Rev. V. Clay Noah Jr. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. His survivors are his wife, June (Smith) Roberts whom he married May 19, 1941 in Mountain Grove, Missouri; 2 sons, Reuel Kenneth Roberts of Longview, Texas, and Richard K. Roberts of Elgin; 1 daughter, Jill Roberts, at home; 1 grandson; 3 sisters, Reba Kanallakan of Jerseyville, Gladys Nickens of Godfrey and Udrey Kunz of Fosterburg. Gubser Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given to First Baptist church where he was a member.
ROBERTS. Died 05-04-1973. Roy Burch Roberts, 58, of 609 W. Mulberry, Jerseyville was pronounced dead on arrival at 11:05 pm April 5 at Jersey Community hospital. Final services were held Monday am at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Father Terry Shea officiated and interment was in St. Francis Xavier cemetery. Mrs. Roberts and her sister, Mrs. Eugene Davis of this city, had gone to St. Louis that evening. Mrs. Roberts found him on the back steps when she returned home. Mr. Roberts had been working in his garage and had apparently become ill with a heart attack and was going to the house. Born October 12, 1914 in Greene County, he was the son of Homer & Mabel (Burch) Roberts. Vu Roberts was a machinist at Owens-Illinois Glass Company. He was a member of Machinist Local 660 and the Onized Club. His wife is the former Mary Marjorie Ferenbach. In addition to his wife he is survived by 1 son, John L. Roberts of Wood River; 1 daughter, Mrs. Alfred (Margaret) Ramsey of Jerseyville; 1 grandson; 1 brother, Reuel H. Roberts of Jerseyville; and 3 sisters, Mrs. Reba Kanallakan of Jerseyville, Mrs. Carl (Gladys) Nickens of Godfrey and Mrs. Herbert (Audrey) Kunz of Fosterburg. His parents preceded him in death. Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
ROBERTS. Died 14-05-1960. William Cody Roberts, 93, died Saturday evening May 14 at 10:15 at Greenlawn Nursing Home, where he had resided for the past 2 years. His only survivors is his wife, Mrs. Anna L. Roberts. The decedent was a son of the late John & Suribana (West) Roberts and he was born September 19, 1866, at Tiskilwa, Illinois. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1852, she and her family moved to Jersey County and resided at Delhi until 1873 when she united in marriage to Samuel H. Robertson of Alton. She had resided in Chicago for the past 40 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. & Mrs. John Duddy. Surviving are 3 sons, John Hand Robert of Chicago, and James of Kalamazoo, Mich.; 1 daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Sherlock of Chicago; 6 grandchildren; and 1 sister Mrs. Thomas R. Walsh of Jersey County. ROBERTSON. Died 27-07-1987. Irene Robertson, 86, of Jerseyville, died July 27 at her residence. She was born November 18, 1900, in Nebraska to Alfred & Mattie (Bring) Swanson. She married Dr. James Robertson on June 24, 1925, in Clifford, ND. She was a member of First United Presbyterian church, Eastern Star and Jerseyville Women’s Club. Survivors include her husband; 2 daughters, Virginia Wieland of Jerseyville and Catherine Stidwell of Castro Valley, California; 1 son, James of Jamestown, ND; 12 grandchildren; and 10 g-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 sister and 1 step-sister. Visitation was July 30 Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The funeral was July 31 at First United Presbyterian church with Rev. Simon A. Simon officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to American Cancer Society and American Heart Association.
ROBERTSON. Died 22-08-1982. Neal F. Robertson, 63, of Fort Lauderdale, FL, husband of Genevieve Greeling Robertson of Jerseyville, died on August 22 in Fort Lauderdale. He is survived by his wife; 2 sons, William L. of Englewood, Colorado, and Lawrence F. of Miami, FL; and 4 grandchildren. Masonic services were conducted at Kraeer Funeral Home in Margate, Fla., by the Coral Springs Lodge No. 373. ROBINSON. Died 07-06-1907. Thomas Marwood Robinson, 42, was born in Sommersey County, New Jersey, December 4, son of William & Ann Robinson. He died at his home 4 miles west of Medora as the result of an illness of several weeks. He died at his home 4 miles west of Medora on June 7. He was one of 10 children who at the age of 8, in the company of his parents, moved to Illinois. They lived 1 year in Pekin, then moved to Jersey County where he has since resided with the exception of 5 years in Greene County. He married Della Fitzgerald on November 25, 1886. A kind and affectionate father, loving brother, and good neighbor, he leaves his wife, 1 son and 2 daughters, (children being: Melvinc, Arthur M, Faye B, and Vivian J.), 3 brothers, 3 sisters, and a host of friends. 1 son preceded him in death.
ROBINSON. William Clay Robinson, 79, died at 6:55 am Sunday, July 6, 1986, at Jersey Community hospital. Born in Guilford, Missouri, son of the late Henry Clay & Ona (Carroll) Robinson, he married the former Margie Jane Brotherton in 1931, in St. Louis. A WWII Navy veteran, he was employed as a wholesale hardware salesman with Witte Hardware of St. Louis for 54 years retiring in 1971. Surviving are his wife; 1 daughter, Wilma Brooks of Jerseyville; 2 granddaughters; and 2 sisters, Annice Rinesmith of Bridgeton, Missouri, and Elizabeth Bader of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Visitation will be from 4-9 pm today at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Services will held there at 1 pm Tuesday with Rev. Simon A. Simon officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville, with graveside military rites by American Legion Post 492. Memorials may be given to American Cancer Society.
RODELL. Died 30-10-1976. Margaret M. Rodell, 58, Postmaster of the Fidelity Post Office for 40 years, died at 12:20 pm, October 30 at Barnes hospital in St. Louis. She was born in Fidelity in Jersey County on March 20, 1918, a daughter of William T. & Annie Marie (Kramer) Rodell. Her survivors are 1 sister Mildred Rodell of Alton and 1 brother, John Rodell of Fidelity, nieces and nephews. Services were held at Fidelity Baptist church at 2 pm November 1, with Rev. William Webe and Rev. Paul Nicholas officiating. Interment was in Oak lawn cemetery, Fidelity.
RODELL. Died 22-11-1981. Thelbert G. (Ted) Rodell, 76, of Fidelity was pronounced dead at his home at 9:30 am November 22 by Deputy Coroner John Ficker. He was found by a cousin John Rodell. An inquiry will be conducted. Rodell, who lived alone, was thought to have been dead for 3-4 days. He was born July 23, 1905 in Jersey County the son of the late George & Laura (Reno) Rodell. He was a teamster (trucker). He is survived by 3 Cousins, Verna Davenport of Carrollton, Mildred Rodell of Alton and John Rodell of Fidelity. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville at 130 Wednesday, November 25, Rev. William Webber of Greenfield, officiating. Burial was at Maple Lawn cemetery in Fidelity Township.
RODELL. Died 12-12-1951. William T. Rodell, 86, of Fidelity, died Saturday, December 12, at 12:40 pm at St. Joseph hospital in Alton where he had been moved on Thursday when he suffered a stroke. He was the son of the late Adolph & Caroline (Sellers) Rodell, natives of Switzerland, and was born July 4, 1865 at Fidelity. Mr. Rodell is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie Rodell, 2 daughters, Miss Mildred Rodell of Alton and Miss Margaret Rodell of Fidelity; 2 sons, Harold Rodell of Gatun, Canal Zone, and John Rodell of Fidelity, and 2 Brothers, Jacob and Emuil Rodell, both of Fidelity. Funeral services were held at the Fidelity Baptist church Tuesday afternoon, December 18, at 2 pm with Rev. Harold Akin, officiating. Interment was in Oaklawn cemetery.
RODGERS. Died 07-12-1897. Amanda (Grandma) Rodgers, 73, died December 7. Funeral from Baptist church, Rev. J. W. Rice serving. Burial was in the cemetery at Piasa. Amanda Rodgers was born September 30, 1824. She married Charles Rodgers February 12, 1846. They were parents of 6 children, 4 of whom survive. She leaves 1 brother, 1 sister, children and grandchildren.
RODGERS. Died 09-1904. Charles Rodgers, 60, was brought from Collinsville, to Otterville for burial. He was doing some bank work when the bank caved in on him. His mother and sisters accompanied the body to Otterville. Burial was in Noble cemetery.
RODGERS. Henry R. Rodgers, 76, died at his home in Jersey County, November 19, 1897. He was born in Sciota County, Ohio, May 27, 1821. He married Rachel (Vanasdoll) Rodgers November 14, 1844. His wife and 4 children preceded him in death. Surviving are 3 daughters, Mrs. Mary E. Davis of Warsaw, Illinois, Mrs. Theresa C. Fisk of near Elsah, Mrs. Roena R. Daniels of Delta, col; 1 son, John V. Rogers, who has been his constant companion at his home; 1 brother, Noah Rogers of Otterville, 2 sisters, Mrs. Nancy Utter of Franklin, Indiana, and Mrs. Catherine Allison near Terre haute, Indiana; 11 grandchildren. Funeral from Otterville Baptist church with Rev. A. Dodson. Burial was in Otterville cemetery. When church was organized at Antioch he united by letter with them and was ordained one of their deacons which office he held at the time of his death.

She leaves her husband, 1 daughter, Mrs. Dora Brothers of Chicago; 1 son, Charles Rodimer of Jerseyville; 2 grandchildren, Marion of Chicago and Harold of Jerseyville.
ROEMER. Died 10-10-1984. Clayton Gorham Roemer, 18 of Piasa died October 10. Born in Alton, son of Claud and Sue Gorham Roemer of Piasa. He leaves his parents, 1 sister, Rebecca; 2 brothers Farley and Jesse; grandmother, Helen Gorham of Medora, grandfather, Claude Roemer of Shipman and g-grandfather, Arthur B. Roemer of Palmyra. Burial was in Maple Lawn cemetery.
ROEMIG. Died 1901. Charles Roemig died at his home in Fidelity of Brights disease. He came to the section early in the 60’s and worked for Charles Rodemeyer in Alton. In 1865 he came to Fidelity where he opened a wagon shop. His wife survives. Burial was in Oakland cemetery.
ROEMIG. Lydia Roemig, 84, died Thursday March 29, 1928, at the home of her niece Mrs. Charles E. Moore, near Fidelity. Funeral was held from the Methodist church, with Rev. T. O. Halley of Medora officiating. Burial was in Oakland cemetery. She was the daughter of Thomas & Elinor Aydelatt, born in Treble-?Trumble County Ohio, December 24, 1843. They came to Jersey County when Lydia was 7 years old. She married Charles Roemig in December 1866. He died September 1, 1901. They had no children of their own but mothered her Niece Lydia Aydelott, now Mrs. Charles E. Moore. She also leaves 2 brothers, Thomas of Fidelity, and Jerome of Newton, Miss.
ROENTZ. Anna V. Roentz, 84, died at 11:25 pm Tuesday, July 11, 1989, at Christian hospital northeast, Florissant, Missouri. She had been a housekeeper at Marquette State Park in Grafton for 20 years. Born in Hardin, her parents were the late Frank & Lena Smith. On October 17, 1922, in Michael, she married John L. Roentz. He died in August 1973. Surviving are 2 daughters, Margaret Sievers of Jerseyville and Mildred Kronable of Meppen; 12 grandchildren; 18 g-grandchildren; 1 brother, George Smith of Hardin; and 1 sister Amy Smith of Hardin. Preceding her in death were a son; John Roentz; 1 sister Viola Andres; 1 brother, Pete Smith; and 1 grandson. Visitation is 5-9 pm today with a rosary recitation at 7 pm at Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin. A funeral mass is 10 am Friday at St. Norbert Catholic church in Hardin with Rev. William Hembrow as celebrant. Burial is in the church cemetery. Memorials may be given to charity of one’s choice.
ROENTZ. Bill Roentz, 59, died at 4:30 pm Saturday, July 12, 1986, at his residence. The WWII veteran was the owner of Bill’s Market in Grafton. He was born in Michael, the son of Anna (Smith) Roentz of Grafton and the late John Roentz. On September 29, 1947, in Michael, he married Eva Marie (Brown) Roentz and she survives. In addition to his mother and wife, surviving are 3 sons, Roger and Rick both of Grafton, and Billy Joe Roentz at home; 3 grandchildren; and 2 sisters, Magaret Sievers of Jerseyville and Mildred Kronable of Meppen. Visitation will be from 4-9 pm today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Grafton where a rosary will be recited at 7 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 am Tuesday at St. Patrick Catholic church in Grafton with Revs Patrick Carroll and William Hembrow as co celebrants. Burial will be at St. Norbert cemetery in Hardin. Memorials may be given to the Grafton emergency corps.
ROENTZ. Frank Roentz, 94, died at 11:45 am Friday, January 15, 1988, at his home. He was a farmer, born in Michael, Illinois, the son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Frank Roentz. He was a WWI veteran of the US Army. He married Mary Catherine (Zipprich) Roentz on April 28, 1920, in Michael. She died in 1970. Surviving are 2 sisters, 3 grandchildren and 8 g-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 1 son Francis Xavier Roentz. Visitation will be 4-9 pm Sunday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Grafton, where the rosary will be recited at 7 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 am Monday at St. Patrick Catholic church in Grafton with Rev. Patrick Carroll as celebrant. Burial will be St. Michael cemetery in Michael.

Joseph P. McNamara of the Oblate Fathers officiated at the services with interment at St. Michael cemetery at michael. Born March 21, 1883 in Michael, she was the daughter of Leonard & Margaret (Condon) Zipprich. She had lived in Michael until moving to Grafton 3 years ago. Mrs. Roentz was a member of the Altar Society at St. Patrick church, Grafton, and St. Michael church Michael, where she also belonged to the Purgatorial Society. She is survived by her husband, Albert F. Roentz; 3 grandchildren and 1 g-grandchild. 1 son, Francis Roentz, preceded her in death, October 8, 1970.

Ronald Eugene Roentz, 18, was pronounced dead on arrival at 10 pm August 11 at St. Joseph hospital Alton after he had accidentally shot himself at his home after returning from a hunting trip. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 am August 14 at St. Patrick church in Grafton with Father Patrick Morrow, celebrant. Interment will be in St. Norbert cemetery, Hardin. A 1975 graduate from Jersey Community High School, he was born August 7, 1957 in Jerseyville, a son of John W. & Eva Mae (Brown) Roentz. He assisted his father in the Bill Roentz Market at Grafton. Ronald was a member of the National Rifle Assoc.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, December 5, at Gent Funeral Home in Alton, with Rev. Lionard Todd, pastor of Evangelical & Reformed church, officiating. Mr. Roettgers was a member of the church and burial was in Brighton cemetery. He was a retired carpenter; a son of the late Julius and Ame Maus Roettgers and was born in Jersey County on February 7, 1877. He had resided in Alton for the past 40 years and prior to that he had been a resident of Brighton. His only immediate survivor is 1 brother, Charles Roettgers, of Jerseyville and nieces and nephews. His wife, the Former Ida Kuehnel, preceded him in death in 1943.
ROEWE. Died 10-04-1972. Mary Elizabeth Roewe, 88, of Kane, died at 2:05 am on April 19 at Boyd Memorial hospital in Carrollton after an extended illness. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 am at St. Francis Xavier church in Jerseyville; Father R. T. Shea celebrant. Interment will be in St. Francis Xavier cemetery. Visitation will be held after 3 pm Thursday at Mehl Funeral Home in Carrollton where the rosary will be recited this evening. She was born in St. Clemens, (St Clement?), Missouri, September 5, 1883 the daughter of Antone & Caroline (Thyen) Schroeder. Her husband Harry Herman Roewe, died in 1945. Mrs. Roewe was a member of St. Francis church. She is survived by 4 daughters, Mrs. Agnes Greenwood of East Alton, Marie Roewe of Kane, Mrs. Helen Cox of White Hall, Mrs. Dorothy Deshasier of Kane; 15 grandchildren; 14 g-grandchildren; 1 brother, George Schroeder of Bowling Green; 5 sisters, Mrs. Louise Boschert and Mrs. Clara Plumlee of St. Louis, Mrs. Gesina Meuth of Silex, Missouri, Mrs. Rose Jenkins and Mrs. Theresa Buse of St. Charles, Missouri. 4 brothers, 1 sister 1 son, Anthony, and 1 daughter, Mrs. Albert Kallal, preceded her in death.
ROGERS. Died 05-1887. Mrs. Catherine A. Rogers, 84, died at her home in Jersey. (Co. or Jerseyville.) death was due to general debility. The services were from the Presbyterian church.
ROGERS. Clifford Rogers, 86, of 211 alice dreve, imperial Manor, lakeland, fla, died recently. He was formerly of Jerseyville and service were conducted at 1:30 pm Thursday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev. C. V. Noah officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.
ROGERS. George W. Rogers died at 8:42 pm Saturday, May 5, 1990, at home, after an extended illness. He had been a salesman for Meyer-Schmid wholesale grocery for 25 years, and was a custodian for Alton School District No. 11 for 12 years, before retiring in 1966. Born in Jersey County, he was the son of the late John & Lulu (Hobbs) Rogers. On September 30, 1967, in Alton, he married Marcella K. (Collins) Rogers. Surviving are his wife; 1 sister Dorothy Wahl of rural Jerseyville; and 1 brother, William Rogers of Alton. Preceding him in death were 3 sisters, Alta Campbell, Imo Nordenbrock and Helen Spaulding; and 1 brother, Clifford Rogers. Visitation is from 4-8 pm Tuesday with services at 11 am Wednesday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Rev. Peter Donoho will officiate. Burial is in St. Patrick cemetery in Godfrey. Memorials may be given to Marquette High School in Alton or a charity of one’s choice.
ROGERS. Died 11-1897. Henry Rogers, 76, died at his home in Ottercreek Township. He came from Ohio in 1840. His wife, a native of Ohio, died in 1879. They were the parents of 8 children. Surviving are son, John V., and 2 daughters, Teresa C., wife of Seth Fisk, and Mary E. wife of T. A. Davis of Winchester. He was editor of the Franklin Jeffersonian newspaper in Indiana. Funeral was from Otterville Baptist church.

ROGERS. Died 17-10-1979. Janette Rogers, 84, of Lakeland, Fla., died at 4 am, October 17, at Forest Park Nursing Home in Plant City, Fla. She was born in Otterville on March 28, 1895, the daughter of Milton B. & Leonora (Daugherty) Noble. She married Clifford Rogers July 5, 1942 in Ann Arbor, Mich. She was a 50 year member of the oes, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a 33 year member of First Congregational church of Hillsboro, ND. She is survived by her husband, 1 step-daughter, Mrs. Jack (Dorothy) Penning of Godfrey, 2 step-grandchildren, 4 step-g-grandchildren and 3 sisters, Nellie Noble of Lake Bluff and Alma Schroeder and Thelma Burkhart, of Lakeland, Fla. Visitation will be held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville from 7-9 Friday, October 19. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm October 20 at the Funeral Home with Rev. Clay Noah of First Baptist church of Jerseyville officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery.
ROGERS. Died 06-1967. Lula J. Rogers, 95, a former resident of Jersey County, died Saturday at St. Anthony hospital in Alton. She had been in failing health for sometime and had been hospitalized since April 28. Services were held Wednesday at 2 pm at Gent’s chapel in Alton. Rev. A. R. Fields of Bible Baptist church in Cottage Hills officiated and burial was in Upper Alton cemetery. She was a daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. John Hobbs and was born in Calhoun County on October 28, 1871. She came to Jersey County while a girl in her teens and her marriage to Mr. Rogers took place in Jerseyville in 1890. Mrs. Rogers, who had resided in Alton for the past 35 years, made her home with her son, George Rogers, at 3337 Belle St. Surviving are 3 sons, George and William of Alton, and Clifford of Orlando, Fla.; 4 daughters, Mrs. Alta Campbell of Alton, Mrs. Imo Nordenbrodck of Dallas, Texas, Mrs. Helen and Mrs. Dorothy Wahle of Jerseyville, 10 grandchildren and 20 g-grandchildren. Mrs. Rogers was preceded in death by 2 infant children, 3 sisters, and 1 brother.
ROGERS. Died 22-04-1982. Marvin Clyde Rogers, 68, of 923 S. State St., Jerseyville. He died at Jersey Care Center at 9:45 pm on April 22. He was born in Illinois November 13, 1914 to the late William J. Rogers & Lillian (Mallette) Rogers. He was a laborer. He is survived by 4 brothers, Melvin and Orval, both of Jerseyville, Reid of Bethalto, and Ray of Burnett, Texas; 1 sister Edna Hodgin of Oklahoma City, OK. ROGERS. Died 18-03-1984. William Orval Rogers, 73, Rural Route 1, Jerseyville died at 6:45 pm Sunday, March 18, at Missouri Baptist hospital in St. Louis. Rogers was born December 10, 1910 in Edwardsville, the son of John W. and Lillian (Mallette) Rogers. He Married Wilma (Frank) Rogers December 24, 1939 in Godfrey. Rogers retired in 1973 as a carpenter with Alton Local 377. He is survived by his wife; 2 Daughters, Barbara E. Pasnic of Florisant, Missouri and Connie L. Rogers of Bettendorf, Iowa; 3 grandchildren; 3 Brothers, Melvin Rogers of Jerseyville, Reid Rogers of Bethalto and Ray Rogers of Burnet, Texas; 1 sister Edna hodgin of Oklahoma City, OK. He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother. Funeral services were held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville March 21. Rev. Daniel D. Mead of Delhi Baptist church officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Memorials may be given to American Cancer Soc. and the Delhi Baptist church of which he was a member.
ROHLFING. Died 29-07-1984. Edwin H. Rohlfing, 88, of East Alton formerly of Jerseyville died at 2:30 pm July 29 at VIP Manor Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. Rohlfing was an engineer for the Illinois Terminas railroad for 47 years. He was born February 7, 1896 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of the late Fred & Bertha (Klink) Rohlfing. He was a member of the Jerseyville Masonic Lodge and the vaughn Hill Church of Christ, East Alton. He is survived by his wife the former Marie (Dunham) Rohlfing, whom he married April 18, 1922 in Kane; 1 daughter, Betty Lee Roesch of Fenton, Missouri; 1 son, Edwin, of Godfrey, 6 grandchildren and 12 g-grandchildren. Jennifer was a pre-school assistant at Mrs. Nimerick’s preschool in Jerseyville. Born in Jerseyville, she was the daughter of William A. & Sandra K. (Shaw) Rolando of Springfield. Surviving are 3 Sisters, Chris Norman of West Lafayette, Indiana, and Becky and Kathy Rolando at home; and grandparents, Bob & Doris Shaw and Larry & Olive Rolando, all of Jerseyville. ROLANDO. Olive frances Rolando, 71, died at 5:15 am Sunday, June 3, 1990 at her home. She was a cook for Jersey Community Unit School District 100 for 18 years. Born in Dorchester, she was the daughter of the late Arthur & Molly (Stamme) Bauer. She married Lawrence Rolando in Gillespie on 0ct 12, 1939, and he survives. Also surviving are 1 Daughter, Carol Khollon of Spokane, WA; 3 son, Bill Rolando of Springfield, Michael “Mick” Rolando of Godfrey and David Rolando of Spokane; 11 grandchildren; and 2 Sisters, Freda File of Bunkerhill and Ellen Kaley of Tucson, Arizona. 1 granddaughter preceded her in death. ROSENTHAL. Anna Rosenthal, 59, died in Fieldon, Illinois, on March 19, 1928. She was a daughter of Frederick & Augusta Loellke, and wife of Ferdinand H. Rosenthal. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri, June 12, 1868. She had moved to Fieldon when 2 years old. She married Ferdinand on March 7, 1888. She had belonged to Fieldon Evangelical church. She leaves her husband; 3 sons, Louis, Frank, and Amiel all of Fieldon; 3 daughters, Mrs. Julius Kocher of Wood River, Nettie and Lottie of Fieldon; 3 Brothers, Otto Loellke of Alton, Frand of St. Louis, and Albert of Los Angeles, California; 2 sisters, Mrs. Wm. Baum, and Mrs. F. C. Heitzig of Fieldon.
ROSENTHAL. Died 10-07-1974. Mattye Lou Rosenthal, 63, who resided at 309 Franklin St., Jerseyville, died July 10. Grave side rites were conducted by Rev. Earl Clagg, Friday. Mrs. Rosenthal was found dead by Mrs. James Long, at whose home she had resided. She was born December 9, 1910 in Texas and she has no known survivors. The rites were conducted at Memorial Park cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, with interment there. Jacoby brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville was in charge of the services.

She was born August 5, 1897 in Fieldon. Her husband, Amiel Rosenthal, died in April, 1965. Born in Grafton, daughter of the late John & Annie (watson) Shea, she married armin a Rosin in 1943 in St. Louis. He died January 12, 1980. Surviving are 1 sister kathleen occarlo of Godfrey, numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 4-8:30 pm today at Staten Funeral Home, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 pm. ROSS. Died 03-1885. David S. Ross, 52, born at Bound Brook, New Jersey, came west with parents in 1839. He married Eliza (McBride) Ross in 1885 at Carrollton. Their family contained 7 children. Funeral by Rev. Tyson and Rev. Moscrip. Thought to be despondent because of a land sale that did not turn out right, he died by his own hand.
ROSS. Died 1904. Eliza Ross, 70, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Flindall in Dallard, Wash. The body was returned here and was buried from the home of J. E. Boynton. Rev. S. Catt officiated with burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs. Ross had been away from Jerseyville for 20 years. She was born in New York City in 1834, and moved to Illinois in the 1850’s. She married David Ross in Carrollton in 1855. They were parents of 7 children, 6 daughter and 1 son. 3 daughters died in infancy, and Hattie died in young womanhood. Her husband, David, died 22 years ago. Surviving are Mrs. Frank Post of Benton, Missouri; Mrs. Wm. Flindall of Ballard, Washington, and Charles D. Ross of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. John E. Boynton, her step-sister. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery.

ROSS. Henry A. Ross, 72, died at his home January 13, 1886. Born in Butler County, Ohio, January 19, 1814. He married Mary Jane (James) Ross January 10, 1839 and moved to Jersey County in 1860. Joined Bethel Presbyterian church in 1830 and then joined Presbyterian church in Jerseyville. Funeral was from family home, 3 miles south of Jerseyville.
ROSS. Died 06-06-1898. Herbert Ross, 25, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Sanford Ross, residing south of Jerseyville, died at Champaign June 6. Herbert had graduated from high school in 1892 and entered U of I taking a course in architecture. A letter from the university the first of the week told how Herbert had become ill but no alarm about it. But appendicitis was the cause of the illness. His life ebbed out on the silent tide that beats about the world as the day fades away. Funeral held from Presbyterian church, Rev. W. H. Kearns. Pall bearers: H. R. Gleddhill, Will Rohacek, Gus Christy, Clarence Scribner, David Wyckoff and Aaron Simmons.
ROSS. Died 30-02-1918. Herbert Lee Ross, 23, son of Mr. & Mrs. W. Ross, died at Camp Taylor, near Louisville, Kentucky. Sat March 30, funeral was from Baptist church in Jerseyville. Rev. Joseph Jenkins officiated with burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Herbert Ross is the third young man from Jersey County to die in service. Leslie Cray died in England and Sgt Marion Lynn of Otterville died last winter. Herbert was ill of measles.
ROSS. Died 27-01-1904. James Christopher Ross, 67, was born in Bound Brook, New Jersey, January 27, 1904 and died in Jerseyville, January 27, 1904. In 1839 came to Illinois and settled on farm 2 miles east of Jerseyville. He served as Justice of the Peace and was a member of First Baptist church. In 1857 he married Elizabeth (Robinett) Ross and they were parents of 5 children. Surviving are Aletta, David, William and Sadie. Jennie preceded her father in death. The body was moved to Jerseyville.

Funeral was from their home with Rev. Tyson officiating. Mother of 2 children, one W. S. Ross survives her. She had joined the Bethel Presbyterian church.

His survivors include 1 son, Harvey Ross of Carrollton; 4 daughters, Mrs. Frances Blackorby of Bevier, Missouri, Mrs. Iona Close of East Alton, Miss Gertrudes Ross of St. Louis and Mrs. Bessie McGuire of Excello, Missouri; 17 grandchildren & 2 g-grandchildren.
ROSS. Died 24-09-1985. William “Dave” Ross, 86, of Tracy, California, formerly of Jersey County, died of pneumonia on September 24 at Manteca Hospital in Tracy, California. Ross and his wife Anna (Mains) Ross, daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Warren Mains, moved to California with their family in 1938. They resided in Escalon until moving to Tracy in August of 1944. He was a machinist at H. J. Heinz Company, in Tracy for 15 years retiring in 1963. He was a member of the St. oso Masonic Lodge and was active in First Covenant Church of Tracy. He is survived by his wife; 2 daughters, Shirely-(?) Pereira of Tracy and Marjorie Peterson of Fremont; 8 grandchildren; 12 g-grandchildren and 1 g-g-grandchild

Mr. Roth owner and operator of the Roth Photography Studio since 1937, was active in the business for 45 years. He also drove a bus for the Unit 100 School District for 25 years. He was born December 7, 1910 in Centralia, the son of the late Claud H. & Mabel E. Heyduck. He married Elizabeth (Cole) in 1937 and she died in 1944. He was a member of the Photographers Assoc. and First Assembly of God church. He is survived by his wife, Frances Mae (Gates) Roth, whom he married August 7, 1945 in Carlinville. Also surviving are 2 daughters, Linda J. Crotchett and Carol D. Highfill, both of Jerseyville; 1 son, Dudley P. Roth of Bethalto; 7 grandchildren; and 1 brother, Gerald C. Roth of Gillespie. Funeral services were held at 3:30 pm October 10 at First Assembly of God church in Jerseyville, with Rev. Wayne Pendleton officiating. Burial was at the Cedar Ridge Cemetery at Honey Bend. He was born March 14, 1937 in Calhoun County, a son of Joseph & Sadie (Hazelwonder) Roth. Roth was an auto bodyman at Milner Chevrolet in St. Louis. He was a veteran of the Korean war and a member of St. Francis Xavier church and Jerseyville Moose Lodge. He is survived by 3 Brothers, Alfred of Magalia, California, Loren of Orlando, Florida and Joseph of San Diego, California; 4 Sisters, Mildred Kirbach, Anna Retzer and Janet Klunk of Jerseyville and Melba Friedel of Bethalto. The funeral mass was celebrated at 10 am Thursday at St. Francis Xavier church with Father Patrick Morrow celebrant. Burial will be in St. Francis cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. Francis church building fund. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm Wednesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville.

A funeral mass was recited at 10 am Friday, October 30 at St. Francis Xavier church, Father Patrick Morrow was celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery. Roth was born November 3, 1891 in Michael, the son of the late Peter & Anna (Klunk) Roth. He married Sadie Hazelwonder June 27, 1922 and she survives. Also surviving are 3 Sons, Alfred of Magalia, California, Loren of Orlando, Florida and Joseph D. of San Diego, California; 4 daughters, Mildred J. Kirbach, Anna Marie Retzer and Janet Klunk all of Jerseyville and Melba Friedel of Bethalto. 1 brother Lawrence of Springfield, 21 grandchildren and 26 g-grandchildren. The rosary was recited at 7 pm October 29 at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville after which WWI veteran services. Graveside military rites were conducted by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
ROTH. Died 14-04-1981. Mabel E. Roth, 91, who resided with her Granddaughter, Linda Crotchett of Jerseyville, died at 7:50 pm April 14, at Jerseyville Community hospital. She was born July 28, 1889 in Marion County, a daughter of the late Charles & Amanda (Bundy) Hayduck. Mrs. Roth was a member of First United Methodist church of Jerseyville and the Jersey County rep central committee. Her survivors are 2 son, Dudly Roth of Jerseyville and Gerald C. Roth of Gillespie; 6 grandchildren and 11 g-grandchildren; and 1 sister Ruby Kimmel of Centralia. Her husband was the late Claude H. Roth. Burial was in Centralia City Cemetery, Centralia, Illinois. Memorials may be given to First United Methodist church.
ROTH. Died 17-05-1973. Mary E. Roth, 64, of 130 8th St., Wood River, Illinois, died at 7:25 pm Thursday, May 17, at Firmin Desloge hospital in St. Louis after a short illness. Mrs. Roth was a former teacher in Jersey County schools and a former resident of Jerseyville. She was employed as a teacher at Roxana High School and was a member of St. Bernard Catholic church in Wood River. She was born July 20, 1908 in Hardin, the first child and eldest daughter of the late John & Addie (Fowler) Day, Jr. She was preceded in death by her parents and 1 sister Loretta M. Ritter. Mrs. Roth was graduated from the Ursaline Academy of the Holy Family, Alton and from Webster college, Webster Groves, Missouri. She received her master’s degree from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. On November 24, 1935 she married Leo Roth at Springfield. Surviving are her husband, Leo Roth; 4 daughters, Mrs. Eileen Lyons of Aurora, Missouri, Mrs. Eleanor Fieler of Baton Rouge, LA, Misses Leona Roth and Helen Roth, both at home; 1 sister Mrs. Renard G. Hagen of Jerseyville and 1 brother, John W. Day of East Alton. Friends called on Sunday at Marks Mortuary in Wood River where a prayer service was held at 8 pm. A funeral mass was celebrated at 9:30 am Monday, May 21, at St. Bernard Catholic church with burial in Woodland Hills cemetery.
ROTH. Died 19-09-1985. Mary E. Roth, 85, of Jerseyville died September 19 at Greenwood Manor. She was born April 1, 1900, in Calhoun County to Joseph & Elizabeth (Herzog) Koenig. She married Noah M. Roth of October 30, 1935, in Springfield. He died in March 1951. She then moved to Jerseyville and worked as a retail sales clerk from 1952 until she retired in 1972. She was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic church in Jerseyville. Survivors include daughter, Threse (Loellke) Snider of Jerseyville and Audrey Zinsser of St. Louis; brother, Charles Koenig of Dow and George Kornig of Jerseyville; Sisters Clara Kelly, Elizabeth Hughes and Mildred Hughes all of Jerseyville; 5 grandchildren; and 2 g-grandchildren. Visitation and the rosary were September 20 at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The funeral mass was September 21 at Holy Ghost church with the Rev. William Hembrow as celebrant. Burial was in St. Norbert cemetery at Hardin. Memorials may be given to Holy Ghost church and the American Cancer Society.

Michael Allen Roth, 15, son of Mr. & Mrs. Albert Roth of Rural Route 1 Jerseyville, was killed Monday night when the motorcycle he was riding ran into a truck on Washington Road, southeast of Rockbridge. The accident occurred only 1 mile from his home. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:30 pm. Funeral mass was celebrated Thursday am at St. Michael Catholic church, Greenfield with Rev. Victor Kaltenbach as celebrant. Burial was in Witt cemetery near Rockbridge. Born in Jerseyville, he was a sophomore at Greenfield Community High School. His mother was the former Shirley Tucker. His survivors are his parents, 1 brother, Rodney of Charleston and maternal grandparents, Oliver and Ruby Tucker of Jerseyville. 1 sister preceded him in death. Memorials may be given to the 4-H foundation and the church to which he belonged.
ROTH. Died 02-05-1984. Shirley Roth, 51, of Rockbridge died at 10:45 am May 2 at Boyd Memorial hospital in Carrollton after a long illness. Father Robert Becker celebrated a funeral mass Saturday am at St. Michael Catholic church in Greenfield. She was born in Jersey County, daughter of Ruby (Freels) Tucker of Jerseyville and the late Oliver Tucker. She is survived by her husband, Albert A. Roth whom she married on December 6, 1952 in Jerseyville; 1 son, Rodney of Bloomington and her mother. Burial was in Witt Cemetery, Rockbridge. Memorials may be given to American Cancer Soc. and St. Michaels Building Fund.
ROTHE. John H. “Bud” Rothe, 69, died at 6:40 pm Friday, September 21, 1990, at home after a short illness. He retired in 1981 as a carpenter from Amco Oil Company in Wood River after 38 years of service. Born in Jersey County, he was the son of the late Otto F. & Lillie (Down) Rothe. He married the former Charlotte Kirchner on June 14, 1941, in St. Charles, Missouri. Surviving are his wife; 3 daughters, Carol Nichol of St. Cloud, MN, Sharon Knepper of Oxford, Maxx, and Linda Bishop of Madison, WI; 6 grandchildren; 6 Sisters, Eileen Voorhees and Della Freeman, both of Brighton, Evelyn Mundy and Verna Hewitt, both of Godfrey, and Ina Lowis and Nina Darr, both of Piasa; and 5 brothers, Melvin and Frank Rothe, both of Brighton, Charles and Wilbur Rothe, both of Jerseyville, and Robert Rothe of Kane. Visitation is from 4-8 pm today at Targhetta Funeral Home in Brighton, and will continue from 8:30 am Monday until service time at 10:30 am at First Presbyterian church in Brighton. Rev. Dave Dennis will officiate. Burial is in Brighton cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church, where he was a member, or the American Cancer Society.
ROTHE. Died 19-01-1972. Otto F. Rothe, retired farmer of Rural Route 1, Jerseyville, died Wednesday, January 19, at St. Luke hospital in St. Louis, the day before his 81st birthday. He had been a patient at the hospital for a week. Friends may call at the Warner Funeral Home in Brighton after 3 pm Thursday. At noon Friday the body will be moved to the Presbyterian church at Brighton where services will be held at 2 pm with Rev. Bob Branin officiating. Interment will be in Brighton cemetery. Mr. Rothe, a son of the late Herman & Katherine (Weber) Rothe, was born in Jersey County January 20, 1891. He was married in 1916 to Lillie M. Downs. Her death occurred in 1964. His survivors include 6 sons, Melvin, Frank, and Wilbur Rothe of Brighton, John and Charles of Jerseyville, and Robert Rothe of Kane; 6 daughters, Mrs. Don Voorhees and Mrs. Howard Freeman of Brighton, Mrs. Jesse Hewitt of Godfrey, Mrs. William Mundy of Alton, Mrs. William Lewis of Piasa, and Mrs. Dale Darr of Medora; 2 sisters, Lydia Roberts of Alaska and Ellen Clifton of Fla., and 1 brother, Herman Rothe of St. Charles; 48 grandchildren and 14 g-grandchildren.
ROUNDTREE. Died 25-04-1973. Frank Roundtree, 61, of St. Charles, a former Jerseyville resident. Funeral services were held Saturday am at St. Peter Catholic church, St. Charles, Missouri. Interment was in St. Francis Xavier cemetery, Jerseyville. His death occurred April 25, at St. Louis County hospital. He was born October 1, 1911 in Granite City a son of William H. & Annie (Heffron) Roundtree. Mr. Roundtree was retired from McDonnell Douglas.

ROUNTREE. Died 13-03-1953. Mrs. Annie Rountree, 81, of Jerseyville, died Friday am March 13, at 7:35 at St. Joseph hospital in St. Charles, Missouri, where she had been a patient for 4 days. Mrs. Rountree, widow of Wm. Hiram Rountree was born at Forest City, Illinois on August 13, 1871. She is survived by 1 son, Frank S. Rountree of St. Charles, Missouri, and 3 grandchildren. The body was brought to Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral rites were held Monday am, March 16, at 9:30 am at St. Francis Xavier church with Rev. Father Eugene Griffin officiating. Interment was in St. Francis cemetery.
ROUSE. Died 25-11-1983. Irving E. Rouse, 73, of Route 4, Jerseyville, died November 25 at Jersey Community hospital. He was born December 1, 1909 in Chicago, son of Burt & Susie (Lindsay) Rouse and was an electrician, retiring in 1974. He is survived by his Wife, Mildred (Sweetman) Rouse whom he married January 2, 1937 in Kampsville; 2 sons, Irving D. Rouse of Big Bear Lake, California and Kent Rouse of Palatine; 6 grandchildren and 3 g-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Audrey Stoner of Oak Park and Berniece Haner of NC. He was preceded in death by 1 brother and 1 sister. Visitation was held Monday and the funeral was Tuesday, November 29. Burial was in Mount Emblem Cemetery at Elmhurst.

ROWDEN. Died 10-1919. Mrs. Henry Rowden, 66, died at her home 3 miles west of Jerseyville. Despondency and worry over the sale of their farm a few weeks ago, led to her death. Mrs. Rowden leaves her husband and 2 sons, Wilbur Rowden of Jerseyville and Charles Rowden of St. Louis. Funeral was held from Baptist church with Rev. Joseph Jenkins officiating, and burial in Oak Grove cemetery.
ROWDEN. Died 10-1968. Mrs. Bessie Lee Rowden, 86, died at 5 pm Saturday at Jersey Community hospital. A daughter of the late Jerome & Elizabeth (Cyter) Miller, Mrs. Rowden was born in Illinois, January 14, 1882. She was the widow of Charles Rowden, and formerly lived in north east part of Jersey Township. She had been residing in a Nursing Home in White Hall prior to her admittance to the hospital, 8 days before her death. Her survivors are 1 son, Paul Rowden, of Redwood City, California; 1 brother, Charles Miller of Wichita, KS; 2 sisters, Mrs. Edna Mathew of Jerseyville and Mrs. Gertrude Ryan of White Hall, and 1 grandchild.
ROWDEN. Died 10-1926. Dr. C. H. Rowden, 48, took his own life with a gun. He had been under treatment for mental illness. An inquest was held. Dr & Mrs. Rowden moved to Jerseyville in July 1925 he was an optometrist and had been dean and member of the faculty of Missouri School of Optometry in St. Louis. He also worked in Agriculture Department of US government. Born on a farm 3 miles west of Jerseyville, the son of the late H. J. & Sarah A. Rowden. He had attended Jerseyville schools. He leaves his widow and 1 son Paul. Funeral was held from First Baptist church with Rev. Carson officiating and burial in Oak Grove cemetery.
ROWDEN. Died 05-1921. Charles Rowden, 12 hours, infant son of Charles & Roda Rowden, died at his home. The Rowdens are the parents of 11 children, 10 living. Mrs. Ladie Bowers, Leslie Jeneatt, Estelle, Alice, Thelma, Frank, Harold, Bertha, Stanley and Charles. Burial was in Hartford cemetery, with Rev. Rueben Russel officiating.
ROWDEN. Died 03-04-1917. Charles Rowden, 51 years, 4 months, died at his home in Kane, Saturday April 3, 1908? Card says 1917, text 1908. The funeral services were held from Kane Baptist church at 2 pm Monday, Rev. T. J. Roady officiating. Mr. Rowden was a brother of George Rowden of this city.
ROWDEN. Douglas Rowden, of Spokane, WA, having lived in Jersey County for some years, died October 10, 1920. He left Jersey County 37 years ago and since the death of his wife has been making his home in California with his children. Mr. Rowden died in October but relatives failed to hear of his death until now, due to the fact that his youngest daughter, Mrs. Eva Eldand, had written to John Rowden, a brother of the deceased, who had been dead many years, and her letter was returned to her. Later she wrote Mrs. Erwin and the letter was received last week. Besides Mrs. Erwin, the deceased leaves 1 brother, Henry and 1 sister Mrs. Lloyd Belt.
ROWDEN. Mrs. Edith Rowden, 84, died July 6, 1976, at her home. She was born in Jersey County December 24, 1891, the daughter of Hugh H. & Mary (Kirpatrick) Snell. She was the widow of Wilbur Rowden, who died in December of 1974. Funeral services were held at 2 pm Friday, July 9 at First Baptist church in Jerseyville, the Rev. Everett Chambers officiating, with burial in Oak Grove cemetery. She was a member of the Kane Eastern Star, charter member and past president of Jersey County Homemakers Extension Assoc., a member of the Jerseyville Ruby Rebekah Lodge and a member of First Baptist church in Jerseyville for over 60 years. She is survived by 1 son, Hugh H. Rowden of Decatur; 2 daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Mary) Arnold and Mrs. Dale (Betty) Fox, both of Jerseyville; 8 grandchildren; 5 g-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, after 4 pm Thursday until 11 am Friday and then at First Baptist church. Memorials may be given to First Baptist church.
ROWDEN. Died 03-1915. George A. Rowden, 65 years, 6 months, 16 days, died at his home in Jerseyville. Funeral was from Methodist church with Rev. E. T. Carroll officiating and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He was born in Montrose, Lee County, IA. He moved to Jersey County in 1868 and married Elizabeth (McKinney) Rowden, youngest daughter of James & Mary McKinney. They were parents of 3 children, Mrs. Clara Baird, Mrs. Emma D. Day and George Arthur Rowden. Elizabeth died in 1880. In 1886 married Mrs. Agusta Neece. They parented 2 sons Roy and Leo. He leaves his wife, 3 sons,2 daughters, 1 brother, 1 sister. Those from far away attending the funeral were: George Arthur Rowden of Springfield, Illinois, Roy Rowden of Jefferson City, Missouri, Stewart and Will Southworth of St. Louis, Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Rowden, Edward Rowden and Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Rowden of Laomi.
ROWDEN. Died 12-1877. Miss Hettie Rowden, daughter of James Rowden, living north west of Otterville, on Jerseyville and Fieldon Road, committed suicide by shooting her self through the brain.
ROWDEN. Died 29-10-1985. Hugh (Henry) Rowden Sr., 70, of Decatur, died October 29 at Decatur Memorial hospital. He was born October 1, 1915, in Monroe, LA, to the Late Wilbur F. & Edith (Snell) Rowden. He was a retired general agent for Transamerica Occidental Life Insurance Co.; a member of First Baptist church in Decatur, Macon No. 8 Masonic Lodge, AF & AM, Springfield Consistory, Springfield Ansar Shrine Temple and Golden K. Kiwanis Club of Decatur. He was a past president of Decatur Life Underwriters. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth; 1 son Hugh H. Rowden Jr. of Decatur; 2 sisters, Mrs. Mary Arnold of Kane and Mrs. Betty Fox of Jerseyville; and 4 grandchildren. Visitation was October 31 at Brentlinger Pershing Funeral Home in Decatur. The funeral was November 1 at First Baptist church in Decatur. Burial followed a family graveside service in Fairlawn Cemetery in Decatur. Memorials may be given to the church and Shriners Crippled Childrens hospital.

ROWDEN. Died 08-1983. Leslie C. Rowden, 85, died at 12:45 am Sunday at Jersey Community hospital. Born in Jersey County, son of the late Clarence & Rhoda (Miller) Rowden, he was a farmer. Surviving are 5 sisters, Stella Yeakley of Albuquerque, NM, Juanita Neimeyer of Grafton, Alice Crivello of Kansas City, Missouri, Thelma Moore and Bertha Siebert, both of Alton; and 4 brothers, Frank and Stanley, both of Alton, Harold of Godfrey and Claude of Rosewood Heights. Visitation will be from 4-9 today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Services will be conducted there at 2 pm Tuesday with Rev. John Vidakovich officiating. Burial will be in Hartford cemetery. Memorials may be given to Garnet’s Nursing Home.
ROWDEN. Died 07-1880. Mrs. Lizzie Rowden, 26, died on Saturday of last week, at the home of Mrs. James McKinney. Lizzie was the wife of George Rowden.
ROWDEN. Mary Rowden, 70, daughter of George & Christiana Hunter, died October 1822 (?), at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Lovell in Jerseyville. She moved with her parents to Jersey County and settled near Fieldon. She married H. B. Rowden in 1839. They moved to St. Louis, Missouri and then to Nauvoo, Illinois because of Mormon trouble they then moved across the river to Montrose, Iowa where they lived 14 years. Then they moved to Croton, IA, where July 15, 1858, her husband died leaving her with 6 children. She then moved to Springfield, Illinois, where her brother lived and has lived with her children in Sagamon and Jersey County. Her daughter Mrs. Mary Campbell is deceased. Funeral from the home of her daughter Mrs. lovell.
ROWDEN. Died 18-07-1969. Mrs. Mary T. Rowden, 97 years, 7 months, 5 days, former resident of Jersey County, died at her residence Friday July 18, at 7:45 pm. She had made her home at 1351 Claudene, St. Louis, Missouri, a resident of Mother of Good Counsel Home. She was a daughter of the late Fred H. & Anna (Wahle) Heitzig and was born at Fieldon December 13, 1871. Mrs. Rowden was the widow of Frank Rowden, Bunker Hill and Fieldon banker. Surviving are 2 sons, Robert C. and Fred F. Rowden, both of St. Louis, 3 grandchildren, and 5 g-grandchildren, 2 brothers, William and Edward Heitzig, and 2 sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Dugan and Miss Bertha Geitzig, all of Fieldon. Her husband and 1 daughter, Cornelia, preceded her in death. Requiem mass was celebrated Monday at 9 am at St. Mary church, Westwoods. Burial was in Fieldon cemetery. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where the rosary was recited Sunday evening.
ROWDEN. Died 04-05-1971. Paul Rowden, 65, former Jersey County resident, died Tuesday May 4, at his work in Live Oak, Menlo Park, California. Mr. Rowden, was engaged in the real estate business, suffered a heart attack. Funeral services were held Friday in California and burial was there. Mr. Rowden was a son of the late Charles & Bessie (Miller) Rowden, and was born and reared in Jersey County. Mr. Rowden had resided in the west for several years. He is survived by his wife, Claire, and 1 daughter, Carol of California. He was a nephew of Mrs. Edna Mathew of Jerseyville, Wilbur Powden of Kane and Mrs. Gertrude Ryan of Quincy.
ROWDEN. Died 15-12-1974. Wilbur F. Rowden, 88, a retired farmer of the Kane vicinity for 55 years, died at 4:35 pm December 15, at Jersey Community hospital. Born in Jersey County December 6, 1886, he was a son of the late Henry James Rowden & Sarah Adaline (Bradshaw) Rowden. At one time he was a teacher in the rural schools in the county. Mr. Rowden was a member of the First Baptist church for 69 years and had belonged to the Kane Masonic Lodge and Farm Bureau. He was a past board member of Jersey County HIA, County Mutual Insurance Company and Farm Bureau. His survivors are his wife of 61 years, the former Edith A. Snell; 1 son, Hugh H. Rowden of Decatur; and 2 daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Mary) Arnold of Rural Route 1, Jerseyville and Mrs. Dale (Betty) Fox of Rural Route 2, Jerseyville, 8 grandchildren; 3 g-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by – incomplete.
ROWE. Died 12-1924. Anna Rowe, died in Chicago. She was sister of Mrs. A. H. Cochuran of Jerseyville. Mrs. Rowe was the daughter of the late Mrs. Abner Barr – her maiden name being Miss Anna Lindley. She was a native of Jerseyville until her marriage to Charles Rowe. She was a musician of ability and was an organist at 1st Presbyterian church in Jerseyville for many years. She leaves 3 sisters, Mrs. Birdie L. Todd of Seattle, WA, Mrs. H. N. Cary (Cory?) of Granite City and Mrs. Cochran of Jerseyville. The funeral was held in Chicago.
ROWE. Died 09-1918. Marcille Rowe, 28, wife of Mason Rowe of Jerseyville, died at St. luke hospital, in St. Louis, following the birth of a son, Mason Marwood Rowe. She had lived in Springfield, Illinois before coming to Jerseyville several months ago. Her husband had taken a position with Sheppard Garage in Jerseyville. Remains were taken to Carrollton to the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Frank Dowdall. Rev. Mundell officiated at service. She leaves her husband and son, parents, 3 brothers, Albert, Leyen, and William and 1 sister Miss June Dowdall. She was a niece of Mrs. Della Robinson, Mrs. Ada Robinson, Mr. & Mrs. A. F. Robinson of Jerseyville and a cousin of the Wylder and Mains families.
ROWELL. Died 25-07-1974. Harry S. Rowell, 72, died at his home in Virden. He was born Oct. 29, 1902, the son of the late Mr. & Mrs. W. H. Rowell of Fidelity. He attended Jersey County schools and was a 1922 graduate of Jersey Township High School. He is survived by his wife, Irene; 1 son, Harry Jr.; 1 stepson, William; 3 grandchildren; and 1 sister Mrs. J. Babb of Vandailia, Missouri. Funeral rites were held July 27 at Berry Funeral Home in Virden.

Rowell, 91, one of the older residents of Jerseyville, died at 7:10 am Friday, January 6, at the home of her son-in-law and daughter Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Grafford, Jerseyville, where she had resided for the past 6 years. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral services were held at 2 pm Sunday, January 8, at Rosedale Methodist church with Rev. Harold E. Lane, pastor of First Baptist church, Jerseyville officiating. Burial was in Rosedale cemetery. Mrs. Rowell was born in Jersey County May 25, 1871, a daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Charles E. Crull. She was united in marriage with Frank A. Lowe, and they were parents of 1 daughter, Ella Edna, now Mrs. Grafford, who survives. Following the death of Mr. Lowe, she married Henry Rowell who also preceded her in death. In addition to her daughter Mrs. Rowell is survived by 7 grandchildren; 15 g-grandchildren; 2 brothers, P. L. Crull of Rosedale, and Arthur Crull of Dawson Creek, B.C., Canada, and 1 sister Mrs. Ella Groppel of Rosedale. She was a member of Steelman Camp, Royal Neighbors of America.
ROWLING. Mrs. George A. Rowling, 60, died at her home near Grafton, October 28, 1927, after a lingering illness. Mrs. Rowling was the eldest daughter of the Late John T. & Charlotte (Bray) Slaten. She was born near Grafton, December 1, 1867 and was married to George A. Rowling, November 7, 1889. They were parents of 5 children, 4 sons, William of Alton, Ross, Walter and Lawrence of Grafton and 1 daughter, Miss Grace Rowling of Grafton, they and her husband survive. Also surviving, 8 grandchildren; 4 sisters, Mrs. George Seik, Mrs. William Zimmerman, Mrs. Nat Bray, and Miss Omelis Slaten, all of Grafton; 1 brother, Mark Slaten, also of Grafton. She was a charter member of Lodge No. 995, RNA, (Royal Neighbors of America?), under the auspices of which order services were held from the home on October 30. Rev. C. J. Struebing of Methodist church officiated. The esteem in which the deceased was held in the community was shown by the large attendance at her funeral. Floral offerings were numerous and beautiful.
ROWLING. Died 10-11-1979. Charles A. Rowling, 58, of 307 Sherman St., Jerseyville, died unexpectedly at 11:15 pm November 19 at Jersey Community hospital. Services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at United Methodist church by Rev. R. E. George. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He was born August 5, 1921 near Otterville, the son of Mrs. Myrtle (Weller) Rowling of Jerseyville and the late Walter Rowling. Rowling was a trucker in the local area for 35 years and was a member of the United Methodist church and Eagles Lodge.
ROWLING. Died 1969. Eva L. Rowling, 74, of Grafton, died Friday evening at St. Joseph hospital in Alton where she had been a patient for 5 weeks. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Donald Riley of Brighton officiated and interment was in Scenic Hill cemetery. Mrs. Rowling was born September 2, 1894 near Grafton, the daughter of Ernest B. & Lulu (Patton) Hart. She is survived by her husband, G. Ross Rowling; 2 daughters, Mrs. Charlotte Townsend of Godfrey and Mrs. Virginia Wilson of Grafton; and 6 sons, George, Wayne, Robert, Roy Lee and Richard Rowling of Grafton and John Rowling of Florissant, Missouri; 22 grandchildren and 4 g-grandchildren. Her parents, 3 sons and 1 sister preceded her in death.
ROWLING. Died 23-10-1985. Frieda Rowling, 51 of Grafton, was pronounced dead on October 23 in Elsah Township in Jersey County. She was born April 14, 1934, in Germany to the late Anton & Freida Kerschl. She married Samuel R. Rowling on June 15, 1953, in Germany he died February 27, 1959. Survivors include son Sam of Grafton; 1 brother, Joseph Derschl of Munich, Germany; and 2 grandchildren. The funeral was October 25 at Jacoby brothers, Grafton with Rev. Pat Carroll officiating. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery. Memorials may be given to Grafton Volunteer emergency corps.
ROWLING. Died 13-01-1981. G. R. Rowling, 86, of Grafton died January 13, 10:30 am at Jerseyville Care Center. Services were conducted Thursday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Grafton, with Rev. Robert Patterson officiating. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery. The retired merchant was born March 1, 1884 in Jersey County, a son of George A. & Nona (Slaten) Rowling. His wife was the late Eva (Hart) Rowling. His survivors are 6 Sons, Wayne R, Robert W, Roy Lee, John D, Richard and George all of Grafton; 2 daughters, Virginia Wilson of Grafton and Charlotte Townsend of Godfrey; 1 brother, Lawrence Rowling of Grafton; 22 grandchildren and 12 g-grandchildren.
ROWLING. Died 22-05-1979. Geraldine Yvonne Rowling, 52, of Grafton died at St. Anthony hospital in Alton at 10:50 am May 22. She had had an extended illness. Services were conducted Thursday at Grafton Methodist church with Rev. Robert Patterson officiating. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery. She was born March 28, 1927 in St. Louis, a daughter of Otis & Cassandra (Heath) Vanausdoll and was employed in the housekeeping department at Principia College. Mrs. Rowling was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Her survivors are her husband, Robert Rowling whom she married January 31, 1947; 1 son Steve Rowling of Grafton and 1 daughter, Linda Brown, Grafton; 4 brothers, Jack Vanausdoll of Wilmington, Calif., Bob of Grafton and Ray and Tim of Shipman; 1 sister ila laubscher, Grafton; 4 grandchildren. Her parents, 1 son, 2 brothers and 1 sister preceded her in death.
ROWLING. Died 04-07-1984. Robert W. Rowling, 61, 512 main, Dow, was found dead in his car at 5 pm on July 4 on Branch Road at the park. The WWII US Army veteran was a heavy equipment operator in construction. He was born December 31, 1922 in Otter Creek Township to the late George & Eva (Hart) Rowling. Rowling was a member of the Alton VFW No. 1308 and the Grafton American Legion. His survivors are his wife, Joyce (Johnson) Rowling whom he married February 14, 1980; 1 son Steve, Grafton; 3 step-sons, Eddie Peridore, Granite City, Linsy Peridore, Cottage Hills, and Allen Peridore, Centralia; 1 daughter, Linda Brown, Grafton; 5 brothers, George, Wayne, Roy, John and Richard, all of Grafton; 2 sisters, Virginia Wilson, Grafton and Charlotte Townsend, Godfrey; 5 grandchildren. His first Wife, Geraldine (Vanausdoll) Rowling, died May 21, 1979. Services were conducted Friday at Jacoby Brothers Grafton, by Father Roy Bauer and VFW Post 1308 conducted graveside services at Scenic Hill cemetery.
ROWLIN. Died 1888. Simeon Rowlin died at his late residence 3 miles north of Grafton last Sunday am. Funeral by Rev. James Slaten.
ROWLING. Died 24-10-1964. Walter Clarence Rowling, 68 years, 6 months, retired Jersey County farmer and a veteran of WWI, died Saturday Oct. 24, at 12:20 am at Jersey Community hospital where he had been a patient for several days. Mr. Rowling, who resided at 513 W. Spruce St., Jerseyville, had been in ill health for some time. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at First Methodist church with Rev. Mode Powell, officiating. Military rites were conducted at Oak Grove cemetery by Worthey Post No. 492, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 4528. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Mr. Rowling was a son of the late George & Nona (Slaten) Rowling and was born at Grafton of April 24, 1896. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Myrtle Rowling, retired Jersey County teacher, 1 son, Charles Rowling of Alton, 1 granddaughter, Connie Sue Rowling of Jerseyville, and 3 brothers, William Rowling of Alton, and Ross and Lawrence of Grafton.
ROWRAY. Died 25-11-1927. Elmer Rowray, former resident of Jerseyville, died in Sacramento, CA. He had resided in California for the past 20 years and the funeral was held there. He had been engaged in the transfer business. He married Lena (Finch) Rowray, she survives. Also surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Edward Cutler and Mrs. Bord Blanchett of Sacramento; and 3 sons, Marion and Rex of Pasadena, and Verne of New Jersey.
ROYSTON. Died 03-06-1951. Llerene Ethelwynne Royston, 51, died unexpectedly Monday evening. Mrs. Royston had entered West Penn. Hospital in Pittsburg the previous Monday for a checkup. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, she would have celebrated her 52 birthday on August 12. She was the only daughter of Dr. S. W. Downeny of Jerseyville and had visited here about 6 weeks ago. Surviving her in addition to her father and husband is 1 son Richard Downey Royston who is a jet instructor at the Air Force base at Greenville, Miss. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, June 5, at 3 pm in Pittsburg and burial was in that city.
