UFER. Died 08-11-1981. Services for Glendon E. Ufer, 55, of Fieldon were conducted Tuesday afternoon at Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin by the Rev. Clyde Meyers. Burial was in the Hardin cemetery. He died at 7:30 am, Nov. 8 at his residence. The WWII veteran was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Arthur and Gladys (O’Rourke) Ufer. His survivors are his wife, the former Helen Joyce Kroeschel; 1 daughter, Susan Ufer of Fieldon; 6 Sons, Jerry of Hamburg, Jeffrey, Steven, Glen Jr., Douglas and Charles all of Fieldon; 2 grandchildren; 1 Sister, Evelyn Presley of Hardin and Shirley Dale of Fieldon; and 2 Brothers, Leland of Eldred and Arnold of Hardin. The lung association has been named as a memorial.
UFFERS. Died 01-08-1955. Mrs. Louise Uffers wife of Walter Uffers of Madison, died Aug. 1, in a nursing home in Madison following a long period of invalidism. Mrs Uffers, who was 78 years old, was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William H. West and was born in Jersey County and spent her early life here. She is survived by her husband, 2 step-sons, 1 sister, Mrs. Frances Keys of Granger, Texas, and 1 brother William Henry Harrison West of Granite City. Funeral rites were held Thurs. afternoon, Aug. 4, at the Lahey Funeral Chapel in Madison and interment was in Sunset Hill Cemetery near Edwardsville.
UMPHRESS. Pearl Elizabeth Umphress 78, died Oct. 8, 1982. Born Aug. 26, 1904 in Bluffs, daughter of Edward and Bertha (Hofner) Christianer. She married Thomas E. Umphress July 24, 1925. They owned and operated Umphress Printing in Kane. Survivors are her husband, Thomas, Jerseyville; 1 daughter Anne Simeone, of Westmont, 1 son Harold Umphress of Godfrey, 7 grandchildren and 1 g-grandchild. Rev. John Sims officiated at the service, held from Kane Methodist church. Burial was in Oak Wood Cemetery in Greenfield.
UNDERWOOD. Died 26-03-1988. Oku Alton Underwood, 83, died at 1:05 pm Sat., March 26, 1988, at his residence. Underwood was a commercial painter for 35 years with Local 471 in Alton. He was later an aid assistant at Alton Clinic until retiring in 1967. Born in St. Charles, Ark., he was the son of the late Samuel and Sarah Jane (Benthall) Underwood. He married the former Mary Magalene Browning Dec. 3, 1929, in Dewitt, Ark. And she survives. Also surviving are 4 daughters, Kay Cullers of Harrisburg, and Jeanette Menezes, Beverly Vandygriff and Cheri Hardwick, all of Jerseyville; 7 sons, Robert Underwood of Mount Zion, William Underwood of Argenta, Gerald Underwood of Kansas City, MO, John Underwood of St. Louis, Dwight Underwood of Vernon Hills, James Underwood of Belvidere and David Underwood of Jerseyville; 26 grandchildren; and 26 g-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Basil, Aubrey and Cecil Underwood; and 2 sisters, Laura Anderson and Ouieda Fowler. Visitation will be 4-9 pm today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville; then at Gospel Assembly Church in Jerseyville visitation will continue from 11 am until time of services at 2 pm. The Rev. Clyde Shaw will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the church, where Underwood had a member.
UNVERZAGT. Delmar L Unverzagt, 78, died at 8:56 am Mon. at St. Anthony’s Hospital. He was a pipe fitter supervisor for Shell Oil Co., retiring in 1969 after 37 years of service. A WWII veteran, he served in the US Navy Seabees. Born in Brighton, son of the late Edward and Margarett (Heldmann) Unverzagt, he married the former Rosalea Plogger on Apr. 10, 1927, and she survives. Also surviving, are a daughter Delores Richardson of Alton; a brother Leland of Forterburg; and 3 sisters, Irma Gross of Wood River, Fern Welch of Forsteburg and Esther Middleton of Staunton. Visitation will be from 6-9 pm today at Gent Funeral Home in Alton, where Hibbard Masonic Lodge of Brighton, of which he was a member, will conduct services at 7:30 pm. Funeral services will be at 2 pm Wed. at the First Baptist Church of Brighton with the Rev. Howard Opperman officiating. Burial will be in Fosterburg cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the church, where he was a member.
UPDIKE. Died 29-12-1959. Clarence Darlington Updike, who was engaged in the milling business in Jerseyville for 39 years, died Tues. am, Dec. 29, at 1:55 at the Jersey Community Hospital where he had been moved Sunday afternoon after he had suffered a heart attack at his home, 208 West Spruce St. He had been in failing health the past few months. Friends may call at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home after 3:30 pm Wed., Dec. 30. Final rites will be held at the funeral home Thurs. afternoon, Dec. 31, at 2 pm. Rev. Earl Dickey, pastor of the First Methodist church, will officiate and interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery. The decedent was a son of the late Charles H. and Addie (Darlington) Updike and was born in Jersey County Aug. 14, 1882. His age at the time of death was 79 years, 4 months, and 15 days. Mr Updike was married on June 14, 1906, to Miss Edith White of Dow who survives him. He also leaves 2 daughters, Mrs. Lawrence (Verna) Favoright of Batavia, and Mrs. Harold (Leah) Little of Peoria, 2 sons, Clarence Updike, Jr., and Charles H Updike of Alton, 9 grandchildren and 3 g-grandchildren. Prior to engaging in business in Jerseyville, Mr. Updike operated general merchandise stores in Delhi and Dow for 10 years and also engaged in farming. The couple moved to Jerseyville 39 years ago and Mr. Updike purchased the Schattgen Milling Co. which he operated until 1953, when he retired from active business. At that time his older son, Clarence, Jr., who had been associated with him in business since the close of WWII, assumed management of the business. In addition to his business interests Mr. Updike was active in civic and fraternal organizations.
UPDIKE. Died 06-03-1981. Connie I. Updike, 25 of Peoria and her newborn son died March 6 as a result of a two car crash on Willow Knolls Road. She was pronounced dead at 1:10 am by Deputy Coroner Richard Root and her infant son, who was delivered in the emergency room of St. Francis Hospital, was pronounced dead at 1:25 am. Mrs. Updike is the daughter of Betty (Johnston) Litherland, formerly of Jerseyville. Her grandmother, Gladys Ames, is a sister of Mrs. Oren Priest and Mrs. Kenneth Timpe of Jerseyville. Mrs. Updike was born April 2, 1955, in Peoria, a daughter of Elmer and Betty Johnston Litherland and married Stephen Updike Dec. 12, 1980 in Pekin. She was employed by Caterpillar Tractor Co. 6 years as a crt operator. Her survivors include her husband; her parents of East Peoria; 1 daughter, Dawn, at home; 2 brothers, James of Champaign and Dean of East Peoria; 2 sisters Beverly Litherland of East Peoria and Vickie Wynkoop of Morton; grandparents Bill and Gladys Ames of Sunnyland and a nephew. Services were held at Schmidt Funeral Parlor with burial in Springdale cemetery.
UPDIKE. Died 07-05-1974. Funeral services for Mrs. Edith M. Updike, 89, of Jerseyville will be conducted Sat. afternoon, May 11, at 2 pm from Gubser Funeral Home. The Rev. Everett Chambers, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs. Updike died at 11:30 pm on May 7 at Garnet’s Chateau. She was born Nov. 4, 1884 in Jersey County, the daughter of the late Charles H. and Mary Leah (Slaten) White. Her husband was the late C. D. Updike. She is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. Verna Faavoright of Batavia and Mrs. Leah Little of Jerseyville; 2 sons, Clarence Updike and Charles Updike of Jerseyville; 10 grandchildren; 6 g-grandchildren; 1 g-g-great grandchild. Visitation will be held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, after 4pm Fri. May 10. The family has designated the First Baptist church as a memorial fund.
UPDIKE. Died 14-10-1889. Mrs. Ellen Updike, 71, widow of Theodore Updike, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. D. Landon, Oct. 14, 1889. The funeral was held from the home, with Rev. W. H. H. Avery officiating. Burial in Jerseyville cemetery. She was born in Mercer County NJ, March 31, 1818. She married Theodore Updike Jan. 31, 1838. He died Jan. 19, 1888. They came to Illinois in 1858, and located near Jerseyville. One of 10 children, 6 survive: 2 brothers Wesley and Charles; 4 sisters, Mrs. John B. Voorhees, Mrs. Thomas Potter, Mrs. Charles Voorhees, Mrs. W. D. Landon. Was united with C P church in Jerseyville.
UPDIKE. Died 00-11-1918. Mrs. Emma Updike, 78, widow of Wesley Updike, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William H. Clark, in St. Louis. She moved to St. Louis 15 years ago. Survivors are: 3 daughters Mrs. Clark, and Mrs. Albert Thomas of St. Louis and Mrs. Clarence Updike of Trenton, NJ. Lester Goodman of Kane, is a grandson. The remains were brought to the home of her sister-in-law, Mrs. W. D. Landon, in Jerseyville; Rev. Joseph Jenkins officiated. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery.
UPDIKE. Died 10-02-1921. Frank Updike a son of Jasper Updike, a Jersey County pioneer, died at his home in Palmyara, Fri. Feb. 10, at 11:45 am after a long illness of creeping paralysis. Funeral services will be held at the home in Palmyara, Sun. afternoon at 3:00. The body will be brought to Jerseyville on the 10:02 C P & St. louis train Mon. for interment and short services will be held in Oak Grove cemetery. The deceased was a nephew of Mrs. W. D. Landon and of Charles Updike of Alton, formerly of Jerseyville. He is survived by his widow.
UPDIKE. Died 11-01-1964. Funeral rites for Mrs. Grace Gill Updike, 93, of Alton, were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, Tues. afternoon Jan. 14, at 1:30 Pm. Rev. Mode Powell, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends called at the funeral home prior to the rites. The death of Mrs. Updike occurred Sat. Jan. 22, at 11:45 pm at Garnet’s Nursing Home in Jerseyville where she had resided for one day. The aged woman had been residing in Jerseyville in recent weeks. The nonagenarian was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gill and was born in Jersey County on Jan. 23, 1870. Her 94th birthday anniversary would have occurred this month. She was first married to Loren Lamb and after his death she was married to Charles H. Updike. The couple resided in Alton for many years, where they owned and operated a grocery store for almost 40 years. Mrs. Updike was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter of Alton. She is survived by nieces and nephews, 1 step-daughter-in-law, Mrs. C. D. (Edith) Updike of Jerseyville, 5 Step-grandchildren, Clarence and Charles Updike of Jerseyville, Mrs. Verna Favoright of Batavia, Mrs. Leah Little of Peoria and Elwood Pitchford of Delhi and 2 cousins, Miss Millie Gill and Mason Gill of Dow.
UPDIKE. Died 09-07-1979. Funeral mass for Mrs. Helen Louise Updike, 59, of Route 4, Jerseyville was celebrated Thur. am at the Holy Ghost Catholic church with Father William Hembrow celebrant. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. She died at 6:13 pm July 9 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Alton. Born July 27,1919 in St. Louis, she was a daughter of William F. and Helen Louise (Laurent) Shephard. She married Clarence Updike May 7, 1942 in Springfield. She is survived by her husband Clarence; 4 sons, William A. Updike, Columbus, IN, Thomas Shephard Updike, Rantoul, Charles Douglas and Robert C. Updike, Jerseyville; 1 Daughter, Mary Susan Updike, Jerseyville; 1 granddaughter, Alison Elizabeth Updike; 3 sisters, Mary M. Shephard Hacienda Heights, Calif., Elizabeth Ann Holland, Oregon, Illinois and Jeanne F. Shortal, Jerseyville she was preceded in death by 1 son Paul Eugene. The rosary was recited Wed. evening Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The family designates the Holy Ghost Church or the American Cancer Soc. as memorials.
UPDIKE. Died 00-01-1888. Theodore Updike, 71, died at his home 4 miles south of Jerseyville. One of the old settlers of the county, having lived here since he was quite small. Funeral will be at Baptist Church, the Rev W. H. H. Avery officiating. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Survivors are; his widow; 2 sons, Wesley and Charles; 4 daughters, Mrs. Thomas Potter, Mrs. John B. Voorhees and Mrs. Will D. Landon; (1 not named?) pall bearers: John A. Cory, Charles H. Voorhees, A. J. Everts, John Reed, William Davison, Wm. Post, G. Berkenmeyer and Sanford Ross.
UPDYKE. Mr. and Mrs. Will Clark and Mrs. Wesley Updyke accompanied remains of Mr. Wesley Updyke to Jersey, for burial. They returned to their home in Monte Vista, Colo. Updyke family well known in this area having lived here for a great many years before moving out west. Same persons accompanied the remains of Mrs. Geo. Goodwin, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Updyke for burial.
URBANY. Myrna “Minnie” Urbany, 83, died at 2:30 pm Tues., July 4, 1989, at Garnet’s Chateau, Jerseyville, after a lengthy illness. She retired in 1973 as a cook and Jerseyville restaurant operator. Born in Rockbridge, her parents were the late Roy O. and Idona Olive (Stringer) Ballard. On Aug. 4, 1926, she married Frank Krueger. He preceded her in death. She later married Urban Urbany, who died Sept. 17, 1973. Survivors are a sister, Marie Todd of Jerseyville; and a brother, William James Ballard of East Alton. 2 Sisters, Mildred McElrath and Mary Margaret Isringhausen, preceded her in death. Visitation is 10 am Fri. until service time at 1 pm at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Burial is in Oak Grove cemetery, Jerseyville memorials may be given to the nursing home.
UTLEY. Died 21-11-1977. The funeral of James Thomas Utley, 75, 114 Fletcher, Jerseyville was held Nov. 23 at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev. Harry Frazer officiated, burial in Oak Grove cemetery. He died at 10:25 pm Nov. 21 at St. Anthony’s Hospital, Alton. He was born Apr. 5, 1902 in Austin, Ark., a son of Thomas J. and Ella (Russell) Utley. A retired carpenter, he was a member of Mason Lodge 139 in Cabot, Ark. His survivors include his wife, Dorothy (Booth) (Woodson) Utley; 1 son, Leo Utley; 1 step-son, Ronald G. Woodson of Carlinville. 5 step-daughters, Mrs. Aaron (Katharine) Moore, Tampa, Fla., Mrs. Fern Jeffers, Decatur, Mrs. Edward (Jane) Whittleman, Jerseyville, Mrs. Joe (Macy) Allen, Brighton, Mrs. Kathryn Coarsley, Orange Co., Calif.; 5 brothers, William Utley of Ward, Ark., Albert and B. J. Utley of Austin, Ark., and Vernon and Wilson Utley of North Little Rock, Ark.; 2 sisters Eva Reveley and Velma Griffin of Austin Ark.; 15 grandchildren.
UTT. Died 00-06-1912. Mrs. John Utt, 61, formerly of Jersey County died in Virden. She was the step-mother of Mrs. W. T. Darby.
UTT. Died 00-00-1879. Belle Utt, 14 year old daughter of Joseph Utt of Jerseyville, burned to death. She was returning home from a visit to the home of Mrs. Hilton, where she had obtained a basketful of carpet rags. She carried it on her arm and when a short distance on her road home, in front of Mrs. Jackson’s house, she discovered that her clothing on fire. Mrs. Jackson threw a table cover over her. Dr. Bartlett, gave medical care. How the rags took fire is supposed to be either from a coal of fire or burning tobacco fell from Mrs. Hilton’s pipe and lodged in the basket.
UTT. Fatally Burned. A young girl named Belle Utt, aged 14 years, daughter of Mr. Joseph Utt, of this place, was burned to death on Friday morning last, the casualty occurring in one of the streets. She was returning home from a visit to the residence of Mrs. Hilton, where she had obtained a basket full of carpet rags. This basket she was carrying on her arm, and when a short distance on her road homeward, in front of Mrs. Jacksons house, she discovered that her clothing was on fire. It seems that she was wearing a large sun bonnet and did not know of her perilous condition until she felt the flames enveloping her. She ran around west of Mrs. Jacksons dwelling and into the yard, where she fell exhausted, with her clothing all on fire. Mrs. J. threw a large table cover over her, and young Morton Proudfit, hearing the cries for help, hastened to the spot and with great presence of mind took off his coat and assisted in subduing the flames which were fast consuming the poor unfortunate girl. She was terribly burned, almost beyond recognition; her long braided hair burned off and her face and head and body was a solid blister. Dr. Bartlett was immediately summoned and rendered medical assistance, but the girl was past recovery, having inhaled the fire as well as having been burned externally. She lingered a few hours and died at the home of her grief-stricken parents, who have the sympathy of the whole community. How the rags which she was carrying took fire cannot be accounted for with any certainty. It is supposed, however, that either a coal of fire or burning tobacco fell from Mrs. Hiltons pipe and lodged in the basket as she was putting in the rags, and that the stiff breeze from the south, the direction in which the girl was going, fanned the spark into a flame; or matches might have been dropped into the basket or may have been in the girls pocket and been ignited by friction. The mystery connected with the painful affair will probably never be solved. The Virden Record, May 28, 1879.
UTT. Died 00-10-1888. George Utt, 50, formerly of Jerseyville, took his life at his home in St. Louis. He was born and reared in Jersey County. At one time he owned two saloons, one in Carrollton and one in Jerseyville. He moved to St. Louis and followed the business of horse trading. He leaves his wife and 2 sons, Amos and Frank. Both sons are salesmen for the famous Barr Store in St. louis.
UTT. Died 31-12-1953. Funeral services for George Utt, retired elevator man whose death occurred Dec. 31 at the home of his sister, Miss Hattie Utt, in this city, were held Fri. afternoon, Jan. 2, at 2:30, at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Rev. R. W. Schwarzlose, pastor of the Methodist church, officiated, and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr Utt was a son of the late John and Mary Marshall Utt and was born in Jersey County Nov. 5 1878 his age at the time of death was 74 years, 1 month, and 26 days. Surviving are 1 sister Miss Hattie Utt, of Jerseyville; a brother Charles Utt of Godfrey; his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Utt, and 2 daughters, Mrs. Helen Camp of Phoenix, AZ, and Mrs. Thelma Smith of Grafton.
UTT. Died 00-00-1898. Harry Utt drowned near Nevlin’s Ferry, at Ottercreek outlet. Funeral was held from home of his parents, Rev. Callaway Nash officiating.
UTT. Died 29-03-1967. Miss Hattie Utt, formerly of Jerseyville, who for the past 14 years has made her home with a niece, Mrs. Paul Lother on Rt. 3, Godfrey, died at 10 pm Wed. March 29, at the Carlinville Area hospital where she had been a patient for a day. She had previously been a patient at the Jersey Community hospital. Funeral services were held at 2 pm Sat. afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev. Louis Purcell officiating, burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Miss Utt, born and reared in Jerseyville, was a daughter of the late John and Mary (Marshall) Utt. Her age at the time of death was 82 years, 1 month, 24 days. For many years, Miss Utt was associated with the Jacobs Lumber Co. in Jerseyville. Surviving are 5 nieces: Mrs. Paul Lother, Mrs. Ray Camp of Phoenix, AZ, Mrs. William Smith of Grafton, Mrs. A. E. Hudson of Arlington, Texas, and Mrs. Walter Fessler of Dow, and 1 nephew Charles Utt of Roodhouse.
UTT. Died 01-01-1924. Miss Emma Utt was called to Kansas City, by the death of her brother, J. V. Utt, who died Jan. 1, 1924. He was the oldest son of the late John Utt of Jerseyville. Survivors are: his wife, 1 daughter, and 2 sons. Funeral from Oakhurst Methodist Church in Kansas City.
UTT. John Utt, 66, died at home. Rev. G. E. Shepherd conducted services at Methodist church. Mr Utt had been ill since the death of his son, Harry, who had drowned on July 21.
UTT. Died 00-00-1893. John Utt born in Portsmouth, Ohio, Nov. 23, 1831, died (recently). A member of the Methodist church, he had been married twice, and leaves his wife and 9 children. He was 66 at the time of death. He had lived in Jerseyville 19 years and served as janitor at the Methodist church.
UTTERBACK. Paul E. Utterback, 48, of Geneseo, formerly of Jerseyville, died at 12:30 Pm May 16 in Geneseo from an apparent heart attack. He was a driver for Preston Trucking and formerly with Dohrn Trucking, both of Rock Island. Born in Perry, MO, son of Mary (West) (Brown) of Monroe City, MO and the late Eugene E. Utterback, he was a Korean war veteran. Surviving are his wife, the former Patricia Roach of Brighton; 2 daughters, Lori Ann and Toni Sue Utterback, who attend college at Normal; 2 sons, Paul and Marvin, both of Jerseyville and 2 brothers, Charles of Bluffs and Calvin of KY. Services were conducted at Concordia Lutheran church where he was a member and elder, and burial was in Oakwood cemetery. Myers Funeral Home in Geneseo handled the arrangements.
