CALENDER. Died 14-07-1989. Lottie Calendar, 88, died at 2:10 p.m. Friday, July 14, 1989, at Alton Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Calendar had been employed as a care taker for the elderly for more than 30 years. Born in Jersey county, her parents were the late Daniel and Anna Frazer Boomer. Her husband, William, preceded her in death. Surviving are two sisters, Eva Rhoads and Inez Frazer, both of Jerseyville; and nieces and nephews. Four brothers and a sister preceded her in death. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are 1 p.m. Monday with the rev. Larry Hayes officiating. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery, Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the First Assembly of God Church in Jerseyville, where she was a member.
CAMPBELL, Thomas Laverne, and employee of the Jerseyville Telephone Company for many years, who was more familiarly known as “Slim” Butler, died at four-ten o’clock Thursday afternoon, Sept 4, 1952,at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, where he had been a patient for three and one-half months. Mr. Campbell had been ill for several years. The deceased was a son of the late Thomas J. and Mary (Cope) Campbell and was born in Jersey county April 7, 1894 and at the time of his death was fifty-eight years, four months, and twenty-seven days. Prior to his illness Mr. Campbell was the maintenance man for the local telephone company. He was a veteran of World War I. Surviving Mr. Campbell of Jerseyville; one daughter, Ruth Marie Campbell of St. Louis; one granddaughter, Patricia Kallal of Jerseyville; five half-brothers, George, Charles and Starlen Butler, Thomas M. and James Campbell, five half sisters, Mrs. Millie Geisler, Mrs. Hattie Schuester, Mrs. Myra Myers, and Mrs. Agnes Fickenwirth, and Mrs. Behtel Ulrich. He was a member of Worthy Post American Legion. Friends called at Jacoby Brother’s Funeral Home. Services were held at St. Francis Xavier Church Monday morning, Sept 8, at nine-thirty o’clock. Requiem Mass was celebrated by Father John J. Clancy and interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery.
CAMPBELL, Charles Laverne. Funeral mass for Charles Laverne Campbell, 51, of 119 W. Carpenter, Jerseyville was celebrated Monday6 morning, Jan. 26 at St. Francis Xavier Church with the Rev. R.T. Shea celebrant. Interment was in the Oak Grove Cemetery. He died at 9 a.m. on Jan. 23, at the Jersey Community Hospital. Campbell was a professor at the Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, Mich., for 15 years, retiring in 1972, and was a Work War II veteran. Born June 11, 1924 in Jerseyville, he was a son of Thomas Laverne and Bessie Clare Henderson Campbell. His survivors are his widow, Vada Chinn Campbell; two daughters, Martha and Anne; a son, Charles, jr., all at home; his mother, Mrs. Bessie Campbell and one sister, Mrs. Ruth Sweat, Jerseyville. Visitation was held at the Jacoby Funeral Home where the Rosary was recited Sunday evening. Graveside rites were conducted by the American Legion.
CARLIN. On the 14th inst., Van Robinson CARLIN, infant son of Thomas J. and Jennie E. Carlin, aged seven weeks and two days. Jersey County Democrat, September 23, 1875.
CHALLANS. Died 07-10-1982. George T. (Tom) Challans 78 died. Burial in Waverly Cemetery. Rev. Noah. Born May 6, 1905 in Waverly, son of Joseph and Fannie Robson Challans. Married Faye Tosh June 5, 1926 in Carlinville. He died Oct. 7. Retired 15 years ago as service station manager of Munsterman’s. Leaves wife Faye, two daughters, Jaunice Grizzle of Jerseyville and Elsie May Cervi, of Carlinville, eight grandchildren, eight great-gandchildren. One sister Arnetta Challans of Chicago.
CHAMBERLAIN. Died 10-12-1988. Roberta S. Chamberlian, 97 formerly of Brighton, died at 6:50 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, 1988, at Friendship Village Nursing Home in Chesterfield, Missouri. Born in Jersey County, the daughter of the late Robert L. and Mary B. (Nixon) SImmons, Married Thomas F. Chamberlain. He preceded her in death. She was a secretary at Security National Bank, retiring in 1961. Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Joyce Andrew officiated. Targhetta Funeral Home in Brighton is in charge of arrangements.
CHAMBERS. Died 07-12-1911. Mrs. Johanna Chambers died at home of daughter, Mrs. B. M. Brewster in Fieldon, Dec. 7. Burial in Godfrey.
CHAMBERS. Died 1889. Mrs. Joseph Chambers of McClusky, died at home. Funeral from Bethel church.
CHAMBERS. Died 17-12-1954. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, December 20, at two o’clock at the Gent Funeral Home in Alton for William J. Chambers, 83, of Alton. Reverend F. M. Hedger officiated and burial was in the Bethel Cemetery in East Newbern. The death of Mr. Chambers occurred Friday, December 17, at 2:35 a.m., at his home, 1337 State Street, Alton. He was the son of the late Joseph and Margaret Chambers and was born on May 23, 1871 in Jersey County. He resided with a sister, Miss Margaret Chambers, at the time of his death. Surviving him in addition to his sister is a brother, Simon Chambers.
Mr. Ezekiel CHANCE, one of the earliest settlers of this part of Illinois, died on the 18th after a lingering illness. He was born in Virginia in 1798, he came from Kentucky to Illinois in 1828, where he has lived up to the time of his death, making him a resident of Illinois for 47 years. He was 77 years of age in October last. The old landmarks are being cut down by that all devouring scythe of time, death. Soon there will be none left to tell of early times and hardships endured among the first settlers of Illinois. Jersey County Democrat, January 21, 1875.
CHANDLER. Died 27-12-1979. Howard Kimmell Chandler, 68, of 500 Cross Ave., Jerseyville died unexpectedly Dec. 27 at Incarnate Word Hospital in St. Louis He was stricken ill at his home Christmas Eve. Chandler was a teacher for the State of Illinois Department of Correction at Grafton and had resided in Jerseyville for 12 years. Born in Beloit, Wis. Sept. 21, 1911, he was a son of the late Frank F. and Chloe Kimmell Chandler. He was a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church and a member of the Jerseyville Library board. The World War II Navy veteran was a member of the Jerseyville American Legion 492. His survivors are his wife, the former Marian McAdam whom he married May 23, 1959 in Rockford; six daughters, Candy Friday of Rochelle, Sherry Hudziak, Channahon, Ann Hartshorn, Jerseyville and Joan, Judy and Sarah, at home; and six grandchildren. Services were conducted at Gubser Funeral Home Saturday afternoon by the Rev. M. Edwards Breed followed by cremation. Interment later in Sunset Memory Gardens at Rochelle. The church has been named a memorial.
CHANDLER. Died 01-02-1984. Servces for Marian Chandler, 60, of Rochelle, formerly of Jerseyville were conducted Saturday at Ungers Funeral Home in Rochelle with burial there. She died unexpectedly Feb. 1 at her home. She was born Jan. 15, 1924, daughter of Borghild McAdam and the late L. G. McAdam. Her survivors are six daughters, Candy Friday, Judy Chandler of Rochelle, Sarah Chandler, at home, Ann Freshour, Texas, Sherry Hudizack, Channahon and Joan Hunt of R. 1, Grafton; a sister, Joan Haynes, Galesburg; brother, Robert McAdam, Rochelle. Her husband was the late Howard K. Chandler. The United Methodist Church in Rochelle had been designated as a memorial.
CHAPLIN. Died 1905. A. G. Chaplin buried at Newbern from C P church. Rev. Webber of Medora. Was fireman on Illinois Terminal at Alton. Killed in wreck near Alton.
CHAPLIN. Died 03-02-1896. Anna Alice, daughter of John N. and Mary E. McDow, was born March 4, 1864, at Newbern Illinois. SHe was received into the communion and fellowship of the C. P. Church, March 27, 1887, and was recognized as one among the most active and faithful members. She was untied in marriage with William J. Chaplin, Oct. 2, 1888, and to them was born one daughter. Sister Annie died in the assurance and triumphs of a living faith in Christ, Febuary 3, 1896, at the age of 31 years, 10 months, and 29 days. Her husband and little daughter, Nina (7 years old), her father , mother, five sisters, and four brothers with a large circle of other relatives and friends are in sadness because she is gone, yet they have the assurance that her earnest entreaty to them to meet her in heaven is evidence that she had entered into that home and that she awaits their coming. The funeral services, by their request, were conducted by the Rev. J. H. Milholland assisted by the Reverend R. M. Smith. And from the glory world her loved ones may hear the call. Come, “To the place of which the Lord hath said I will give it to you” and “We’ll never say goodbye in heaven.”
CHAPLIN. Died 28-07-1944. Mrs. Anna Mary Chaplin, aged Dow resident who sustained hip fracture July 19, died at 7 a.m. Friday, July 28 at the Memorial Hospital in Alton where she had been removed for treatment. Mrs. Chaplin was the daughter of the late Andrew W. and Marie Gill Miller, and was born in Macoupin County, March 17, 1866. Her age at the time of her death was 78 years. The deceased is survived by her husband. W. J. Chaplin; one daughter, Mrs. Nona Chaplin Waggoner of Dow, and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Day of south San Francisco, Calif. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Chapel, Sunday July 30 at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Harry N. Nease of Grafton officiating and interment was in the Valhalla Park Memorial.
CHAPLIN. Mrs. Martha L. Chaplin died at home of brother, C. W. McDow, near Dow Aug. 30 – 42 yrs – Funeral from CP Church. Rev. C. C. Hall of Granite City.
CHAPLIN. Died 07-12-1948. William James Chaplin, eighty-six year old resident of Dow, died Tuesday morning, December 7, at eight o’clock at home of his daughter, Mrs. Lacey Waggoner at Dow. He had been ill for sometime. Mr. Chaplin was the son of the late James and Henrietta Greene Chaplin and was born in Jersey County on December 3, 1862. He marked eighty-sixth birthday anniversary last Friday. The aged man was a retired farmer. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Waggoner, one grandson and four half-brothers. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, December 9, at two o’clock at Jacoby Brothers’ Funeral Home. Reverend Dale Harmon, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiated at the services and internment was in Valhalla Memorial Park.
CHAPMAN. Died 09-1904. John Chapman 57 years. died at home in E. St. Louis. brought to Jersey. Funeral by Rev. S. Catt. Leaves wife, three sons and two daughters.
CHAPMAN. Died 14-02-1977. Funeral rites for Mrs. Margaret Park Chapman, 73, whose death occurred on Feb. 14 in Ft. Meade, Fla., were held the following day in Ft. Meade. The Order of Eastern Star was in charge of graveside services. Mrs. Chapman was a member of the First Methodist Church and Order of Eastern Star in Jerseyville. Survivors are her husband Paul W. Chapman, Jr., a nephew of the late T. S. Chapman who owned Jersey State Bank, and a brother, Henry E. Park of Hawaii.
CHAPMAN. Died 28-02-1979. Word has been received that Paul Chapman of Fort Meade, Fla., formerly of Jerseyville, died Feb. 28 at the Lakeland, Fla. hospital after a 10-day illness. He was a nephew of the late T. S. Chapman, former owner of the Homeridge farm. His wife, Margaret, died in 1977. He is survived by his mother, a sister and two brothers. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Meade, Fla.
CHAPMAN. Died 10-08-1924. Mrs. Sarah A. Chapman passes away at her home on West Pearl St., Sunday evening, August 10, 1924, at 6 o’clock p.m., after an illness of many months, Mrs. Chapman, who was the widow of the late Senator Theodore S. Chapman, was 67 years, 8 months and 29 days of age. She was born in Jersey County, Nov. 11, 1856, the daughter of William D. and Alvira Landon, who had emigrated to this county from Middlebury, Vermont. From the old Landon homestead, the farm northwest of Jerseyville lately occupied by Asa Beckner, she was married to Theodore S. Chapman on Dec. 31, 1874. This union was a particularly happy one, and was blessed with four sons, Judge Harry L. Chapman of this city, Theodore S., of Chapman, Cutler & Parker, Chicago; Paul W. of Chicago , of the P. W. Chapman & Co. Investment Bankers of Chicago and New York; Truman L. Chapman, President of the Great Western Gypsum Co., of Los Angeles, Calif. Senator Chapman who had become a member of the State Legislature from this district, died Dec. 12, 1914, and the next year Mrs. Chapman moved from the family home, Homeridge Farm, north of Jerseyville, to the beautiful new home she erected on West Pearl Street. Mrs. Chapman was a life-long member of the Baptist Church and very active in all church work. She as for many years, teacher of the Naomi Class, until her health began to fail a year or two ago, and since then had been a counselor of the class. She was also a member fo the Ladies’ Aid of the Baptist Church. Besides her four sons and eight grandchildren, Mrs. Chapman is survived by one brother, William D. Landon, three sister, Mrs. Alice Workman of Auburn, Mrs. Emma Everts and Mrs. Mary Cowan of this city. Funeral services were held from the Baptist Church. Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. R. B. Favoright officiating. Her four sons served as pallbearers. Interment in Cemetery was private.
CHAPMAN. Died 12-1914. Theodore Stillman Chapman born at Becket, Mass. in Berkshire Hills on March 31, 1849. Father, Theodore Chapman, was at that time a lumberman. He emigrated to Illinois and died there when Thoedore Stillman was 7 years old. Mother’s maiden name was Julia E. Wadsworth. She one of six girls, four of whom married ministers and two of them went as Missionaries to Foreign Fields. As Theodore Chapman’s widow when married Dr. Norman Harris and went with him as a Missionary to Burma, India, where she remained four years, and until she lost her eyesight. These four years Theodore Stillman spent with an uncle, Hiram Johnson, on a farm near Rockford. When mother returned she went to Hamilton, NY to live and Thoedore returned there to complete education. After two years at Hamilton College (now Colgate) the West attracted him and he went to LaPorte, Indiana where he had an uncle Dexter Buck. Here he taught school for two years, after which he pushed on to Saint Louis and then to Edwardsville, Madison County, Ill. Came to Jerseyville on Nov. 4, 1869. Taught Shakerag school, then principal of school at Otterville. Studied law and later spent six months in law office in St Louis. Admitted to practice in Illinois in 1874. Married Sarah A. Landon, daughter of Wm. Landon and Elvira E. Landon on Dec. 31, 1974. Four children: Harry Landon Chapman of Jerseyville, Theodore Chapman and Paul Wadsworth Chapman of Chicago and Truman Landon Chapman of Philadelphia, Pa. Four grandchildren, all children of Paul W. Chapman. While teaching school at Otterville he learned of colored man, Geo. Washington, of the fund he had left to help his race. First law suit of importance was to bring about the of this fund to purposes for which the benefactor, Geo. Washington, intended it. Won suit and was appointed trustee of the fund in Sept. 1880. It was then amounted to $9000. Of this $1500 was spent to erect a monument to the negro’s master, Dr. Silas Hamilton. Over one hundred negroes who have received the assistance of this fund. Now amounts to $23,000. In 1884 he elected to 37th 37th Senatorial District of Illinois in House of Representatives. In 1886 elected Senator. Was 65 years – funeral from Baptist Church. Rev. J. R. Reynolds.
CHAPPEE. Born 10-01-1819, Florissant, Missouri. Died -10-1897. Mrs. Catherine Chappee, wife of Joseph Chappee, buried at Bethel church near East Newbern on Oct. 14. Her remains were carried to their last resting place by six grandsons, followed by many of her friends and relatives. Rev. James R. Slaten serving. She was a sister of Uncle Peter Toursville and for many years a resident of Mississippi township. 78 years old. Loved by all who knew her.
CHAPPEE. Died -05-1928. Miss Nancy Chappee died at home near East Newbern – 79 yrs – Funeral from Bethel Memorial Church at East Newbern. Daughter of the late James and Catherine Chappee, pioneer resident of that area. Settled near East Newbern 87 years ago and built the Chappee Homestead. Leaves four brothers – James of Newbern, John and Louis of E. Newbern, George of W. Frankfort, Ill. John Chappee and Niece, Miss Ester C. Chappee, resided at home with Miss Nancy Chappee. Burial in East Newbern.
CHAPPEE. Died 27-01-1954. Funeral from family home for Nina M. Chappee, widow of James Chappee – died Jan. 27 at St. Anthony’s Infirmary. Rev. Paul S. Krebs had service. Burial in Scenic Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were – Wiliam Senger, Robert Goodrich, Thomas Callahan, Charles Amburg, Earl Bates, Edward Buckhold. Mrs. Chappee was a native of Port Perry Canada and born July ?9, 1877. Spent most of married life in Grafton – then to home of her daughter, Mrs. Margaret LaMarsh in Alton. Three other daughters, Mrs. Ray Glatt of Alton, Mrs. Sarah Wallace of St. Louis, Mrs. Lela Finch – Grafton – two sons – James W. of Anaheim, Calif. – Lester Chappee of Cottage Hills – 13 grandchildren – 13 great-grandchildren.
CHAPPEE. Died -05-1931. Mrs. Zilda, 83 years died at home of daughter, Seagraves, in Elsah. Born in Florissant, MO (Louis) lived in Elkhardt, Kansas. 13 children Mrs. L. S. Besterfeldt, Mrs. Katherine Cutler, Mrs. J. E. McCleland, Mrs. Cora Mallott, Mrs. John Carson, Mrs. Julia Wood, 3 sons Frank, Harry, Warren. 18 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great- grandchild. Elm St. Presbyterian Church in Alton. Oak Grove Cemetery.
CHAPPELL. Died 20-02-1950. Arthur E. Chappell of McClusky, manager of the Jersey County Grain Company in Jerseyville, collapsed and died instantly at six-forty o’clock Monday morning, February 20, at the M & O restaurant in this city. Mr. Chappell had eaten his breakfast and was preparing to leave for his work when he suffered the fatal heart attack. A physician was summoned who pronounced him dead. Mr. Chappell had suffered from a heart ailment for several months and had been hospitalized on several occasions for treatment of the malady. The decedent was a son of the late Elmer and Eunice Long Chappell and was born at Delhi on March 20, 1909. He was aged forty years and eleven months. Mr. Chappell had been in the employ of the Jersey County Grain Company for thirteen years and for the past four years had been manager of the local elevator of the company. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lorraine Chappell, two daughters, Sharon and Sandra, and two sons, Jackie and Cletus, all of McClusky; one brother, Everett Chappell of Jerseyville, and two sisters, Mrs ?? Breitweiser and Mrs. ?? ?? of Delhi. He was preceded in death by a son, Darrell, who was killed August 29, 1949, in an airplane accident at McClusky. Fraternally Mr. Chappell was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellows Lodges of Jerseyville. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, February 22, at two o’clock at Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church in Jerseyville. Reverend J. Winfred Stoerker officiated at the rites and interment was in the Chappell cemetery.
CHAPPELL. Died -11-1972. Charles I. Chappell, retired farmer, died at six forty-five o’clock Saturday evening at his home, 307 North Giddings Avenue, Jerseyville. Friends called at the Gubser Funeral Home, services were held at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the First Methodist Church with Reverend R. Louis Purcell officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mr. Chappell was born in Carlinville, February 7, 1884, a son of the late George and Lydia Wharton Chappell. His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lucy Chappell; two sons, Laverne Chappell of New York City and Melvin Chappell of Oxnard, Claifornia; four daughters, Mrs. Howard Cummings of Delhi, Mrs. Detlef Schmidt of Grand Island, Nebraska, Mrs. William R. Warner and Mrs. Lloyd Lyles, Jr., of Jerseyville, twenty grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a niece, Mrs. Robert Donaldson of Greenville who was reared in the Chappell home.
CHAPPELL. Died 04-02-1952. Charles Millard Chappell, a farmer of the Delhi vicinity was found dead in the barn at his farm home about nine o’clock Monday morning, February 4, by his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Dabbs Chappell. Mr. Chappell had suffered from a heart condition for some time and usually informed his wife when he was leaving the house when he would be back. Monday morning when Mr. Chappell did not return at the time his wife expected him she called several times and upon receiving no answer went to the barn to investigate and found him dead. The decedent was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Chevalier Chappell and was born in Jersey County on December 14, 1885. His age at the time of death was sixty-six years, one month and twenty days. Mr. Chappell was for a number of years employed in Alton but for over a year had been engaged in farming. Survivng him in addition to his wife are three daughters, Mrs. James Jennings and Mrs. Raymond Telkamp of Jerseyville and Mrs. James P. Jennings of St. Louis, and one son, Charles (Bill) Chappell of Jerseyville. He also leaves six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four nieces, Mrs. Donald Clausen and Mrs. John Eillingsen of Seattle, Washington, Mrs. Ella Breitweiser and Mrs. Robert Weigel of Delhi; and one nephew, Everett Chappell of Jerseyville. One daughter and one nephew preceded him in death. Friends may call at his home at Delhi. Funeral rites will be held Thursday afternoon, February 7, at two o’clock at the Delhi Baptist Church. Rev. Gerald Meyers of Alton will officiate at the services and interment will be in the Chappell Cemetery.

Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. He died at 1:50 p.m. Sept. 14 at Jersey Community Hospital after a brief illness. He was born March 12, 1931 at Delhi, a son of Everett and Faye Breitweiser Chappell and was an Army veteran, serving during the Korean conflict. His survivors are his wife, the former Linda Williams whom he married June 2, 1963; two daughters, Kimberly Dunham of Jerseyville and Malinda Chappell, at home; two sons, Mark and Richard, at home; one grandchild and his mother. The Peace United Church of Christ building fund has been named as a memorial.

His survivors are his wife, the former Linda Williams whom he married June 2, 1963; two daughters, Kimberly Dunham of Jerseyville and Malinda Chappell, at home, two sons, March and Richard, at home; one grandchild and his mother. The Peace United Church of Christ building fund has been named as a memorial.
CHAPPELL. Dorothy E. Chappell, 89, died at 12:45 a.m. Thursday, July 5, 1990, at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital. She was born in Shipman, daughter of the late John and Mary (McDaniels) Archer. One June 3, 1922, in Shipman, she married Harold “Bud” Chappell. He died on Feb. 3, 1973. Surviving are a daughter, Doris Cox of Mesa, Ariz.; a son, Harold D. Chappell Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sister, Winnie Winslade, Zona Schultz and Eunice Sanner; and three brothers, Chester “Jet,” James and Dick Archer. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Private services will be followed by burial at Shipman City Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Glass and Garden Church of Scottsdale.
CHAPPELL. Died 1921. Our community was greatly surprised and shocked Saturday morning to learn of the sudden death of Edwin W. Chappell, former Sheriff of Jersey County, and well known to all the citizens of Jerseyville and the County. According to his physician’s statement, Mr. Chappell had been troubled with leakage of the heart for some time and death came suddenly Saturday morning at 9:00 o’clock. Mr. Chappell was a native son of Jersey County, having been born in Mississippi Township Nov. 14, 1865, and was a son of Richard and Minerva Jane (Swan) Chappell, who were also natives of Mississippi Township. Richard Chappell, his father, after his marriage located on a farm in Mississippi Township where he died October 1, 1880, aged 56 years. His wife died July 22, 1917, aged 75 years. Their children were: Ella Eudora, – – – is Mrs. William Noble of this city; Teressa Jane, who is Mrs. Prentice Noble, of Alton, Edwin E. and Albert Ross, both of this city; Richard S., who passed away at the home of his sister, Mrs. Noble, about a year ago; and William Pearl, who now resides in Los Angeles, Calif. The deceased attended the schools of his district where he received his education and was married on July 25, 1890, to Emma E. Darr, who survives him. Mrs. Chappell was the daughter of Mathew and Eliza Ruth (Beaver) Darr, both of Jersey County. Mr. and Mrs. Chappell have one son, Richard Clyde, who is a prominent young attorney in the city of Jerseyville. He is a graduate of the Jerseyville High School, studied one year at Shurtleff College, Alton, two years at the Valparaiso Law School, one year in the law department of the Wesleyan University at Bloomington, and completed his legal studies at the Lincoln Law School in Springfield. After Mr. Campbell’s marriage he moved to a farm in Mississippi Township where he spent two years, then moved to Dow, where he conducted a meat market for a year, after which he came to Jerseyville and acted as deputy sheriff of the County for four years. At the expiration of his term he went to St. Louis and was conductor on the street cars in that city until 1900. For the following three years he was employed in the ice cream department of the Union Dairy Company, and was then engaged in work on the Exposition grounds at St. Louis, as a guard, conducting the sight seeing cars. In 1905 he went to Los Angeles and was conductor on an electric railway in that city for two years and four months. Returning to Jerseyville, he formed a partnership with his brother-in-law, William Noble, and the two carried on a painting contracting business until 1910 when Mr. Chappell was again appointed Deputy Sheriff and at the expiration of four years, in 1914, he was elected sheriff of the County, which office he held until the election of the present sheriff, James Catt. Mr. Chappell leaves a great many warm friends in the county who greatly regret his sudden death. Funeral services will be held from the residence, Monday afternoon at 2:30. The Rev. L. W. Porter will officiate. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Mausoleum.
CHAPPELL. Died 12-07-1958. Ephriam Chappell, 83-year old Alton resident, died Saturday morning, July 12, at Mather Nursing Home in that city. He had been ill for five months and a patient in the Nursing Home for six weeks. Mr. Chappell was born in Jersey County on May 2, 1875, a son of the late Ephriam and Maggie Delby Chappell. His early life was spent on a farm. Mr. Chappell moved to Alton in 1908. He was a retired electriacal worker and former automobile salesman. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alice Mowrey Chappell, four children, Mrs. Archa Trabue and H. D. Chappell of ALton, V. F. Chappell of Chicago and Maurice Chappell. He also leaves a stepdaughter, Mrs. Earl Benze of Alton, four grancdchilren and one great grand child. Funeral rites were held Monday morning at Burke Funeral Home in Alton and burial was in Alton Cemetery.
Mrs. Maggie H., wife of Ephriam CHAPPELL was born April 10, 1854, and died April 23, 1887. The departed leaves a husband, three children, many relatives and many friends to mourn her loss, but they sorrow not as others who have no hope. The faithful wife and mother was a charitalbe woman, and a christian worker. She united with the Newbern Cumberland Presbyterian church, March 6, 1887, and having renounced the follies of the world, she devoted herself to her master’s service, expressing her fears that others may have been led by her in some things in her former life to go in the wrong direction, she became very earnest in her advice and in her entreaties to them to forsake earthly vanities, yet she was always tender and of a sweet, shristian spirit in pleading with them. Then she left “it all with Jesus,” and being strong in faith she had the satisfaction of knowing that God does hear and answer his children when they pray. She was engaged in loving service for others when she fell a victim to the disease which carried her to her loving Father. The funeral services were held in Otterville, Ill., at 2 o’clock p.m., April 24th, and her body “sleeps in the valley” to wait the glorious resurrection morning. “Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord from henceforth. CHAPPELL. Died 31-10-1978. Services for Everett E. Chappell, 72 of 404 N. Washington, Jerseyville will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday from Gubser Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert Broeder, pastor of the Peace United Church of Christ. He died at 8:30 p.m. Oct. 31 at Greenwood Manor Nursing Home where he had resided since August, 1977. He was born at Delhi June 22, 1906, a son of Elmer and Eunice Long Chappell. Chappell was construction foreman for R & R Construction Co., Alton until he retired three years ago. He was a member of the Eagles and Moose lodges in Jerseyville. He is survived by his wife, Faye Breitweiser Chappell whom he married July 17, 1929; one son, Donald G. Chappell of Jerseyville; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Weigel of Delhi; four grandchildren. One brother and a sister preceded him in death. Visitation from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Gubser Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. The Peace United Church of Christ has been named as a memorial.
CHAPPELL. Died 26-09-1986. Faye L. Chappell, 81, died at 5:28 a.m., today, Sept. 26, 1986, at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville, following a lengthy illness. She was born in Delhi, a daughter of the late Fred and Lillie (Ross) Beitweiser. Her husband, Everett Chappell, died Oct. 31, 1978. Surviving are four grandchildren; one great-grandson; five brothers, Dixon Breitweiser of East Alton, and Edward, Fred , Pete and Herb Breitweiser, all of Jerseyville; and four sisters, Vida Breitweiser, of St. Charles, Mo., Mary Miller of Jerseyville, Emma Antrae of Alton and Marjorie Beiser of Jerseyville. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. At Peace United Church of Christ in Jerseyville, visitation will continue from noon Sunday until the time of services at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Frederick Francis will officiate. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church, where she had been a member since 1920.

CHAPPELL. Died 16-06-1992. Former Jerseyville resident Loriane L. Chappell, 90, died at 2:10 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, 1992, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Granite City. She was a teacher in the Calhoun and Jersey County elementary school districts, retiring in 1968. Born on Sept. 1, 1901, in Byerton, she was the daughter of the late John R. and Ida Belle (Bovee) Freesmeyer. Her husband, Arthur Elmer “Hap” Chappell, died Feb. 20, 1950. Survivng are two daguhters, Sharon G. and Sandra K. Chappell, both of Granite City; two sons, Jack G. Chappell of Bridgeton, Mo., and Cletus B. Chappell of Jerseyville; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother Frank “Bing” Freesmeyer of Jerseyville; and a sister, Lucille Winkler of Hardin. A son, Darrell Chappell; a sister, Aleta Surgeon; and a brother, Ralph Freesmeyer, preceded her in death. Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. CHAPPELL. Died 14-10-1987. Lucy Irene Chappell, 92, died at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1987, at her daughter’s home in Jerseyville. Mrs. Chappell was born in Logan, Neb., daughter of the late Frank M. and Jesse (Moore) Joy. On Feb. 7, 1917, in Gandy, Neb., she married Charles I. Chappell. He died Nov. 8, 1966. Surviving are five daughters, Maxine Cummings of Delhi, Dorothy I. Moore of Wray, Colo., Ruth M. Warner and Caryl J. Lyles, both of Jerseyville, and Elloise Williams of Mulberry Grove, Ill.; two sons, Laverne Chappell of Columbia, S. C., and Melvin Chappell of Ventura, Calif.; 20 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 10 siblings. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Friday until service time at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Jerseyville. The Rev. Mike Michels will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the church, where she had been a member for more than 50 years. CHAPPELL. Died 16-02-1950. Mrs. Maude E. Chappell, wife of Clarence Chappell of Wood River, died Thursday afternoon, February 16, at three forty o’clock at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Alton where she had been a patient for two weeks. She had been in ill health for eight months. Mrs. Chappell was born October 22, 1881 at East Newbern. She resided in Alton before moving to Wood River in 1927. Her marriage to Clarence Chappell took place October 16, 1901, in Brighton. The decedent is survived by her husband, two sons, Clinton of Chillicothe, Illinois, and Russell of Wood River, and two daughters Miss Betty Chappell of ALton and Mrs. Albert Sanders of St. Louis. She also leaves seven grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. Walter Kubant of Granite City, preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, February 20, at the Staten funeral home in Alton. Burial was in Woodland Hill Cemetery, Wood River.
CHAPPELL. Died 24-08-1953. Mrs. Mildred J. Chappell, widow of Fred J. Chappell, was found dead at her country home south of Jerseyville Monday afternoon. Her death which resulted from a heart attack is believed to have occurred last Friday. Mrs. Chappell was found Monday afternoon by Mrs. William Green of Jerseyville who went to the Chappell farm. Coroner Rodney Jacoby was notified and an inquest was held Tuesday morning. The decedent was a daughter of the late Fred and Mary Elizabeth Robb Jacobs, of Jerseyville and was born here December 19, 1895. Her age at the time of death was fifty-seven years, eight months and two days. She is survived by one brother, Fred D. Jacobs of Jerseyville. Private funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home Tuesday, August 25, with Reverend F. W. Schwarzlose, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. CHAPPELL. Died 01-10-1890. Richard Chappell die of rheumatism of the heart. Funeral at Otterville, one of largest ever held in the county. Richard Craig Chappell, 23, of Gilbert, Ariz., formerly of Jerseyville, was pronounced dead at 2 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, 1988, in Temple, Ariz., of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Born in Jerseyville, he was the son of Catherine (Catt) Chappell of Jerseyville and the late Donald Chappell. He was an electronic draftsman for Intel Corp. in Chaldter, Ariz. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a brother, James C. Chappell of Erhach Air Force Base in Turkey. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The body will be cremated. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville with the Rev. P. P. Heinen as celebrant. CHAPPELL. Died -05-1895. William Chappell born in Devonshire, England, Jan. 28, 1815 died at his home near Delhi 80 yrs. Came to US in 1837 and purchased land on which he lived until his death. Found dead on barn lot near a gate opening into pasture. Funeral from home. Rev. Crow of Jerseyville. Burial in family cemetery by side of wife who died last June. Four sons: Wm. H., Chas. F C. S. and Chester C. all reside in county with exception of Charles who lives in Okla. Death of Mr. Chappell leaves but one of the old settlers in the vicinity of Delhi. Thos Edwards is now the only surviving pioneer settler of that community and he is now confined to his bed where he had been retained several weeks.

CHAPPLE. Died -05-1869. Bartholomew Chapple born Devonshire, England, Feb. 4, 1783 of influential parentage, his youth passed on a farm. At age 22 he married Elizabeth Bendle, of gentle blood, who died 1816, leaving 6 children, the youngest, Wm., an infant. Three years later he married Grace Gattes, also of gentle parentage, with whom he lived through prosperity and adversity for 50 years – seven children born to this union. About year 1830 his eldest son came to U.S. Two years later Father Chapple sailed from Liverpool, England with his family and after a voyage of 13 weeks, disembarked at New York City, Oct. 1, 1832. Proceeded to Dresden, Ohio, where they stopped for a short time with a friend; but not liking the country, he came west. Leaving his family at Alton, he explored the surrounding country, finally purchasing a farm of Bushrod Hamilton, in Jersey County, 8 miles south of Jerseyville, to which he removed his family in December of the same year. Lived here rest of his life. Of his children, 13 in all, seven survive him: the eldest – John B. Chapple – living in Boone County, Ill. is now 63 years of age, the youngest, Pachel, is 35 years of age. Father Chappell – 87 years.
CHARLES. Died 11-02-1898. Died at home in Pasadena, Cal. Feb. 11, 1898, Mrs. Lida Charles, formerly Lida Close, 41 years. Was member of Jerseyville High School in 1875-76 and taught the Fulks School in 1876-7 and at Delhi in 1877 also the Newbern school in 1876-8.
CHARLTON. Died 18-01-1992. Dimple E. Charlton, died at 7 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 1992, at St. Clare’s Hospital in Alton. She was a member of the auxiliaries of Eagles lodge 2747 and a charter member of the Jerseyville VFW Post. Born in Kane, she was the daughter of the late Perry and Sophia (Scoggins) Crotchett. On Aug. 28, 1943, in Union, Mo., she married Allen H. Charlton, and he died Dec. 7, 1989. Surviving are a sister, Hazel Krause of Shipman; and three brothers, James Crotchett of Kane, Thomas Crotchett of Fieldon, and Lawrence Crotchett of Jerseyville. A sister, Annas Hyde; and three brother, Mike, Arnold and Melvin Crotchett, preceded her in death. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Simon A. Simon will officiate. Burial is in Kane Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
CHARLTON. Died 1958. John Henry Charlton of Route Three, Jerseyville, died at his home at 11:15 a.m., Tuesday. His age was 88 years, 2 months and 14 days at the time of death. Mr. Charlton , a retired farmer, was born in Scott County the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Charlton. Surviving the decedent are his wife, Anna; one daughter, Mrs. Joseph Kessinger, Route One, Jerseyville; one son, Allen Charlton, Route Three, Jerseyville, seven nephews and one niece, A daughter preceded him in death. Friends may call at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home until nine o’clock Friday morning. Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Friday) at 1:30 p.m., at the Methodist Church in Winchester with Reverend Roy F. Godell of that city officiating. Interment will be in the Bloomfield Cemetery in Winchester.
CHAROW Died 24-04-1957. Harry Jospeh Charow of 609 Franklin Street in Jerseyville died at seven twenty-five o’clock Wednesday morning, APril 24, at John Cochran Veterans Hospital in St. Louis where he had been a patient for ten days. Charow underwent major surgery at the Hospital on Friday. Friends may call at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at nine-thirty o’clock Friday Morning, April26, at St. Francis Xavier Church with Father John J. Clancy celebrant of the Requiem Mass. Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery. The decedent was the younger son of the late Mike Charow and Mrs. Mary Charow Kowal of Jerseyville. He was born in Delores, Missouri, April 22, 1918, and his death occurred two days after his thirty-ninth birthday anniversary. For a number of years Charow was engaged in the poultry and produce business with members of his family, but of late had engaged in farming. He was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Charow is survived by his wife, Mrs. Marian Schmieder Charow; two sons, James and Carl, and one daughter, Jacqueline, at home; his step-father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Metrol Kowal; and one brother, Stephen Charow of Jerseyville. His father, one brother, and a daughter, Connie, preceded him in death. His fraternal affiliations were the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Jerseyville Knights of Columbus Council, and he was also a member of Worthey Post, American Legion of Foreign Wars Post.
CHAROW. Died 23-12-1953. Michael Charow, a native of Austria, died Wednesday evening, December 23, at eight o’clock at his home in Franklin Avenue following an extended illness. Mr. Charow was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Steve Charow and was born in Austria on May 22, 1892. His age at the time of death was sixty-one years, seven months and one day. mr. Charow had been a resident of Jerseyville for thirty-three years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mattie Charow; two sons, Steve and Harry Charow of Jerseyville; six grandchildren; two brothers, Andrew Charow of Benld and Nick Charow of Detroit Michigan, and one sister of St. Louis. Friend called at Jacoby Brothers’ Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Saturday morning, December26, at 9:30 o’clock at St. Francis Xavier Church. Requiem Mass was celebrated by Rev. Father John J. Clancy and interment was in St. Francis Cemetery.
CHAROW. Died 19-07-1958. Stephen J. Charow, Jerseyville business man whose home is at 206 North Jefferson Street, died at four o’clock central standard time, Saturday, July 19, at St. Mary’s Hospital in St. Louis where he had been hospitalized on several occasions in the past few months, and where he had been a patient the past six days. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in this city after two o’clock Monday afternoon. Funeral services were held at nine-thirty o’clock Tuesday morning, July 22, at St. Francis Xavier Church where Requiem mass was celebrated by the pastor, Father John J. Clancy. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery. Mr. Charow, who had been engaged in the Produce business in Jersey County, was born in DesLoge, Missouri, March 4, 1915, a son of Mrs. Mary Charow Kowal and the late Michael Charow. His age at the time of death was fourty-three years, four months and fifteen days. He served with the armed forces during World War II. He was a member of Worthey Post, American Legion. No. 492, and the Jersey-Greene County 40 and 8 Voiture. His fraternal affiliation was the Jerseyville Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Surviving the decedent are his wife, Mrs. Marjorie Powers Charow; two daughters, Janice K. and Jane; one son, Richard Charow; his mother, Mrs. Mary Kowal, and his step-father, Dymtro Kowal of Jerseyville. Two brothers preceded him in death.
CHASE. Died 08-09-1980. The funeral of Alma Maurine Chase, 82, of Grafton was held Thursday afternoon at the Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Grafton with the Rev. Robert Patterson officiating. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park. She died at 2:50 p.m. Sept. 8 at Eldercare Nursing Home in Alton. Her husband, Harry Chase, whom she married Nov. 27, 1918, died in 1965. She was born Feb. 26, 1898 in St. Louis, a daughter of Clement and Effie Coots Crane. Mrs. Chase was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and a past matron. Her survivors are a son and daughter, Clement Chase of Bethaldo and Doris Grant of Wood River, and a sister, Lola Walkington of Roodhouse; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Her parents, husband and a brother preceded her in death. Eastern Star services were conducted Wednesday evening at the funeral home. The Cancer Society and the Methodist Church had been designated as memorials.

CHENEY. Died 19-01-1916. Miss Daisy Barry received word from Mrs. A. M. Cheney, who is in Calif, telling of the death of Mrs. Emily Cheney, widow of the late P.D. Cheney, brother of A.M. Cheney. Mrs. Cheney died Jan. 19 at the home of her son, Charles Cheney, in Boulder, Colo. She leaves two sons Charles and John and one daughter, Mrs. Carried Greene of Colo.

CHENEY. Prentiss Dana Cheny, retired land operator and a descendant of Jersey County pioneer families, died unexpectedly at four o’clock Sunday morning at Memorial Hospital in Alton where he had been removed for surgery eight hours earlier. Mr. Cheney was transferred to Memorial from Jersey Community Hospital where he had been readmitted Friday following an earlier illness. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home from six o’clock Monday evening until eleven-thirty o’clock Wednesday morning, then at the First United Presbyterian Church where services were held at two o’clock in the afternoon. The Reverend M. Edwards Breed, pastor and the Reverend David Maxton of Granite City, a former pastor of Jerseyville church, officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. On Monday evening, Memorial Services were held by the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star Chapter of Jerseyville. Mr. Cheny, only son of the late Dr. A. M. and Theodosia Barry Cheney, was born at the family homestead, 601 North State Street, on March 15, 1912. He would have marked his fifty-seventh birthday anniversary next month. Most of his life had been spent in the antique surrounding of the parental home which was steeped in history of Jerseyville. A collector and an avid historian, Mr. Cheney, and his wife, Edith, have opened their home on many occasions for social functions and it was a highpoint of historical tours conducted during the quasquicentenial in 1964. On such occasions, it was not uncommon for Mr. Cheny, a talented musician, to provide organ music. A part of the historic Cheney home is what was known in the early years of Jerseyville as the Red House. Built in 1827, it was the first frame building on the site of this municipality. The structure was used as a stage coach station and was the general meeting place for the few settlers who were in this community. later the Red House was purchased by the late Dr. E. A. D’Arcy for a residence. When his son-in-law, Prentiss D. Cheney, built the stately residence on North State Street this original building was incorporated into the new house which had been the home of three generations of the family. Mr. Cheny was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Jerseyville. Fraternal affiliations included the Jerseyville A. F. and A. M. Lodge, Eastern Star Chapter, Shriners, Ainad Temple, East St. Louis, Appolo White Shrine of Jerusalem, Knights Templar, masonic Consisroty, Independent order of the Odd Fellows, the Lions club, and the Elks and Eagles Lodges. He is a past worthy patron of the OES, a member of the Shirne band, a 41-year member of the Jerseyville Municipal Band, and a Past High Priest of the Consistory. Surviving Mr. Cheney are his widow, Edith Hopkins Cheney; two sons, Edward and Charles of St. Louis, and a cousin, William Scott of Jerseyville.

CHESTNUT. Died 13-05-1904. Mrs. Kate N. Chestnut, 75 years died at home of sister, Mrs. V. C. Harbert, May 13. Brief funeral services from home of John T. Peters. Burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery at Springfield. Born in Bristol, Rhode Island, Aug. 14, 1828. When 10, parents moved to Jerseyville. Studied at Monticello Seminary. Married 1854 to J. A. Chestnut of Carlinville. In 1861 they moved to Springfield. He died there in 1898. Since then she has made home with Harberts.
CHICARD. Died 02-12-1978. Amadee F. Chicard, 68, 604 E. Second St., Jerseyville, died at 1:10 a.m. Dec. 2 at Jersey Community Hospital. Chicard was born Sept. 10, 1910 in St. Louis, Mo., the son of Frank and Dora Schaeffer. He was a veteran of World War II and was a long distance transport truck driver. He is survived by his wife Ione Mauk Chicard. Funeral services were held Dec. 4 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home and the Rev. M. Edwards Breed officiated. Burial was in Scenic Hill Cemetery, Grafton. The family had designated the Heart Fund as a memorial.
CHICARD. Died 14-11-1987. Ione Chicard, 78, of Jerseyville, died Nov. 14 at Jersey Community Hospital. She was born Feb. 25, 1909, in Grafton to the late Charles Albert and Mattie May (Slaten) Mauk. She was a retired beautician. Survivors include cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Amadee F. Chicard, who died Dec. 2, 1978; and by a cousin Harry G. Slaten. Her body will be cremated, and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville in charge of arrangements.

CHIPMAN. Died 11-11-1982. Bernard Chipman, 66, of Winchester, a brother of Raymond “Bill” Chipman of Jerseyville, died unexpectedly at his home Nov. 11 from an apparent heart attack. He had retired two years ago as a cost accountant for WIPCO, Winchester. In addition to his brother, Bill of Jerseyville, he is survived by his wife, Imogene; two brothers and three sisters. Two sisters preceded him in death. Services were held in Winchester.

CHISM. Died 02-02-1881. John Chism, who lived between this place and Medora, died on the 2nd leaving a large family. Funeral from his home – Rev. A. Farrow of Medora had services – 60 years old. Burial in family burying grounds on the homestead of his father, 4 and 1/2 miles north.
CHISM. Died 02-03-1954. John W. Chism, vice-president of the Farmers State Bank at Medora, well known stock breeder and farmer, and a leader in civic and church affairs, died at seven oclock Tuesday evening, March 2, at Alton Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. last November he entered Barnes hospital in St. Louis and remained a patient there until January when he returned to his home for two weeks. At the end of that time he entered Memorial Hospital where his death occurred. The deceased was the son of the late John and Mabel Whitfield Chism, and was born on the Chism homestead, a mile northeast of Medora, Dec. 12, 1906. He had resided all his life on his birthplace. Mr. Chism was active in Farm Bureau work until ill health caused him to resign from various committees on which he served. He had been a member of the Macoupin Farm Bureau and of the Locker Board, a member of the farm program committee, and was a former member of the Medora High School Board of Education. He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church at Medora where he had been a deacon for many years. His fraternal groups were the Fidelity Lodge, A.F. and A.M. at Medora, and Modern Woodmen. The decedent is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hope Stotler Chism; three daughters, Miss Inez Chism of St. Louis, Virginia and June, and two sons, John A. and Clifford L., all of whom reside at home, and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Kirsch of Brighton. one sister, Mrs. Marie Brown, and one brother, Guy Chism, preceded him in death. Friends called at the Warner Funeral Home in Medora. Funeral services will be held at one-thirty o’clock Friday afternoon, March 5, at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Medora Cemetery.

A Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. July 12, for Mrs. (Frank) Anastasia Mary Elizabeth Christen, 83, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church with Reverend Father Robert Becker officiating. Burial was at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. Mrs. Christen was born Nov. 27, 1892 in Greene County, the daughter of Henry and Emma Schmidt Goedde. She married Frank Christen, June 10, 1918. She died at 3:05 a.m. July 9, at Jersey Community Hospital. Surviving are her husband, two daughters, Miss Anastasia Christen, Champaign, and Mrs. Ted (Madonna) Berry, Jacksonville; five sons, Louis of Chaleston, Paul of Sun City, Ariz., Everett of Brighton, henry of Centrailia, Mo., and Neil of Jerseyville; 26 grandchildren, and one sister, Wilma Piper of Jerseyville. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, one brother and one sister. The Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Sunday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. The family designated the American Cancer Society as a memorial.
CHRISTEN. Died 29-04-1960. Blayne Merle, one of the twin sons of Henry and Sarah Webb Christen of Jerseyville, died Friday, April 29, at Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. The baby had been hospitalized numerous of times since his birth on December 29, 1959, at the Jersey Community Hospital. Funeral rites were held Saturday morning at the Gubser Funeral Home with Father P. P . Heinen, pastor of the Church of the Holy Ghost, officiating. Interment was in St. Francis Cemetery. Surviving Blayne Merle in addition to his parents are his twin brother, Dwayne, five other brothers, Thomas, Michael, Frank, Martin, and Robert, one sister, Gayle, all of Jerseyville, his parental grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Christen of Jerseyville and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Webb of Chicago.

CHRISTEN. Died 24-06-1980. Henry Christen, 52, of Route 1, Centralia, MO., passed away suddenly at the Boone County Hospital, in Columbia, Mo. June 24. He was the son of Frank M and the late Annastacia Goede Christen. He was born Feb. 26, 1928, in Jerseyville and was married to Sara Elizabeth Webb July 12, 1947, who survives him. Christen is survived by seven sons, Robert and Martin of Columbia, Frank of Las Vegas, Nev., Michael of Quincy, Tom, Dwayne and Richard of Centrailia, one daughter, Gayle Johnson of Centerville, Iowa, four brother, Louis of Charleston, Paul of Pheonix, Ariz., Neil of Jerseyville, and Everett of Brighton, two sisters, Annastacia Christen of Champaign, and Madonna Berry of Jacksonville, and six grandchildren. Christen was preceded in death by one brother, Frank, during WW II, and one infant sone, Blayne. He was a member of the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Centralia. He was a lifetime farmer and had lived in the Centrailia community since March of 1962. Funeral services were held June 27, at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Centralia with Father Gene Robl officiating. Graveside services were June 28, at the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville with Father William Hembrow of the Holy Ghost Catholic Church officiating.

CHRISTIANSON. Died 01-08-1990. Ruth Clyda Christianson, 85, died unexpectedly at 1:26 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, 1990, at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. She was born in Unity, daughter of the late Romeo Claude and Minnie (Hughes) Ireland. On May 15, 1957, in Madison, she married Harold Christianson. Surviving are her husband; a sister, Blanche Slaughter of Alton; and five brothers, Romeo Ireland of Herbster, Wis., Garland Ireland of Bastrop, La., Keith Ireland of Cairo, Leland Ireland of Hendersonville, N.C., and Dr. William Ireland of Lake of the Ozarkd, Mo. Preceding her in death were a son, Claude Eugene “Jim” Anglin; and a brother, Lyle Ireland. Pa. where he married Catherine Welsh. They moved to Ohio in 1809. His death occurred in Preble Co., Ohio March 25, 1840 at 75 years. Daughter spent girlhood days in Ohio. CHRISTOPHER. Died 29-11-1903. Rebecca Ann Stockton born in Butler Co., Ohio on March 27, 1837 and lived short time in Montgomery Co. in Ohio. Married Warren Christopher in Oct. 1856. They came to Illinois and settled in Fidelity. In spring of 1863 made overland trip to Pacific coast. For 1500 miles of this trip, Mrs. Christopher drove team. On journey they narrowly escaped battles with the Indians on the plains. While on Pacific slope they resided in Nevada near the Calif. line. In 1866 they returned, by way of Nicaragua to Illinois, and settled again in Fidelity, where they lived until 1893 when they came to Jerseyville. ME church. Her only child died less than two years of age. An invalid brother, Isaac Stockton, who had made his home with her since1866, survives, with the husband, died Nov. 29, 1903.
CHRISTY. Died -01-1912. Andrew Williams Christy son of John C. and Elizabeth Dennison Christy, born in Morgan Co., (Scott) IL July 29, 1829. Parents moved to old homestead one-half mile east of Kane. In 1864 moved to Jersey County, on farm known as the Forbes place. Married Aug. 24, 1862 to Hannah Armstrong daughter of Samuel and Mary Ann Armstrong. Seven children four died in infancy, John of Alton and Augustine of Jerseyville. Four grandchildren: William G of Phoenixville, Pa., Elizabeth of Lindenwood College, Spencer and John Gordon of Jerseyville. Two brothers Henry C. of Shube t, Neb. and James of Carrollton, Mo. CHURCH. Died 07-02-1955. Christian Science rites for George William Church, wholesale native lumber dealer, are being held this afternoon, February 10, at two o’clock at the Gubser Funeral Home with Miss Thelma Westerhold and Mrs. Harry Blish as Readers. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. The death of Mr. Church occurred unexpectedly Monday afternoon, February 7, at two o’clock at his home, 413 East Spruce Street. The decedent was a son of the late Thomas and Mary Terneus Church and was born in Calhoun County on February 1, 1896, and his age at the time of death was fifty-nine years and six days. Nineteen years ago Mr. Church moved his family to Jerseyville where they have since resided. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Ruth Church, two sons, George and Edward Church of Jerseyville; one daughter, Mrs. Joe Griffith of Palmyra; two brothers, Thomas Church of Grafton and Floyd Church of Hardin; four sisters, Miss Margaret Church of St. Louis, Mrs. Sadie Plummer of Batchtown, Mrs. Oka Ingersoll of Pittsfield and Mrs. Alice Oettle of Hardin, and six grandchildren.
CHURCH. Died 30-10-1987. Leslie “Gene” Church, 49, died unexpectedly at 3:30, Friday, Oct. 30, 1987 at St. Mary’s Hospital in East St. Louis. Born in Grafton he was a son of the late Thomas and Lucille (Smith) Church of Alton. He was employed at Pere Marquette State Park in the restaurant. On May 23, 1981, in Jerseyville, he married the former Mary Beneke, and she survives. In addition to his wife, surviving are two daughters, Lisa and Tina Church, both of Alton; three step-daughters, Mary Campbell of Bethalto, Ruth Wallace of Fidelity and Margaret Furlow of East Alton; a sister, Mary Frances Presley of Batchtown; a half brother, Loren Means of Alton; and one grandchild. Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Grafton, where services will be held at 10 a.m Monday with the Rev. William Hendricks officiating. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
CHURCH. Died 23-10-1985. Thomas Elias Church, 70 of Grafton, died Oct. 23 at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis. He was born Nov. 21, 1914, in Gilead to the late Thomas and Elise (Plummer) Church. He was a World War II veteran, and he was a clerk at the Roentz Market in Grafton. Survivors include son Leslie of Grafton; daughter Mary Presley of Batchtown; brothers Russell of Alton and Wilbur of Grafton; sisters Virginia Britt and Ida Mae Watson, both of Grafton, 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral was Oct. 25 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Grafton with the Rev. Pat Carroll officiating. Burial was in Scenic Hill Cemetery. A memorial has been established to Salvation Army.

Arnold Wilson Cisco, George Edward Cisco and Harlo Cisco were sons of Roscoe and Flora Cisco of Jerseyville, Illinois. Arnold and George graduated from Jerseyville High School and went to the University of Illinois, where they majored in Liberal Arts. George graduated from the university in 1939 and Arnold graduated in 1941. Harlo graduated from Alton High School in 1947 and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Arnold Cisco graduated from the Tuskegee Institute with class SE-43-D, April 29, 1943. Arnold went on to Italy as a flight leader. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart Medal, Oak Leaf Cluster for WW11, Victory Service Medal, Service Label Button, American Campaign Medal and the European-African Middle Eastern Theater Medal. Arnold was killed May 19, 1946, on runway 16 at Walterboro Army Airfield, Walterboro, South Carolina. He was taxing to the assigned taxi way when and air traffic controller allowed another aircraft to land on the same runway, who overran Captain Ciscos airplane, killing him in the cockpit. He was coming back from spending a weekend with his wife, Hennie. Arnold Cisco died when his wife was pregnant with their son, Arnold Jr. {Arnold Cisco Jr. lives in Chicago, Illinois.}
George Cisco enlisted in the 761st Tank Battalion, after a short enlistment in the 761st he enlisted into the Tuskegee Institute, where he graduated with class SE-44-E, May 23, 1944 . George was killed in a bomber accident August 16, 1944; the aircraft hit electrical wires in a rain storm and burned. George was in training in South Carolina for his over seas assignment when he was killed. George had a daughter Donna who was eight months old, when he died. Donna lives with her mother Clare Beatrice (Jackson) Cisco Smith in San Antonio, Texas.
Roscoe Cisco died and is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville, Illinois. After his death, Flora Cisco married George Ritche, and moved to 1129 Highland Avenue, Alton, Illinois. She died in 1971 and is buried in Alton. While living at the address in Alton, she received word of Georges accident at Tuskegee Institute and later Arnolds accident at Walterboro, South Carolina. Both men were buried in Alton City Cemetery, Alton, Illinois.
Arnolds accident was investigated by three Tuskegee flight officers: 2nd Lieutenant Richard L. Daniel, Lieutenant Joe E. Chineworth and Lieutenant Ralph L. Turner. In 1991, Thomas Raglin had Lieutenant Joe Chineworths son in his class, at the American Airline Maintenance Academy in Chicago, Illinois. Joe got his Airframe and Powerplant (A and P) Federal Aviation Agency Mechanics Rating in the 1990s. Felix Kirkpatrick of the Chicago DoDo chapter knew Arnold Cisco and flew with him in Italy. He talked about Arnold in the book Red Tails, Black Wings.
Harlo Cisco went into the U.S. Army after high school and served three years. But, he was honorably discharged when the Korean War broke out. This was due to the Armys policy of sending the last surviving brother home, if war started. Harlo married Irene Davison and moved to Utah. Harlo died and is buried in Utah. Irene Cisco lives in Alton, Illinois.
Arnold Cisco Jr. had not been in touch with his family for thirty years. Around Christmas 2007, he called his family in Alton, Illinois. All these years he had lived in Chicago, Illinois. Submitted by Thomas Edward Raglin, adjunct member of the Chicago DoDo Chapter since 1975.

CISCO. Died 19-05-1946. Captain Arnold Cisco, twenty-six year old Army Air Force fighter pilot and a native of Jerseyville was killed Sunday, May 19, when a transport plane in which he was a passenger crashed near Tuskegee, Alabama. Word of the tragedy was received Monday by the young pilot’s mother, Mrs. George Ritchie of Alton. Captain Cisco’s death was the second tragedy in the family, a brother, Lieutenant George Cisco had been killed August 16, 1944 at Waterloo, S. C. when landing after a routine training flight. Information received by Mrs. Ritchie was that her son had been in Chicago, visiting, his wife, Mrs. Hinnie Mae Cisco, and was returning to his base aboard the transport when the crash occurred. Captain Cisco was the son of the late Roscoe Cisco and Mrs. Flora Cisco Ritchie of Alton and was born in Jerseyville. Surviving Captain in addition to his widow and mother is one brother, Harlow Cisco.
CISCO. Died 16-02-1905. Arnold John Cisco 20 years. died in Nashville, Tenn. on Feb. 16, body brought to Jerseyville to the home of his parents in the east part of town. Funeral by Rev. T. F. Marshall from the Colored Baptist church. Arnold was in his 4th year of work at Fisk U. and one of the finest students. T.S. Chapman, president of the Board of George Washington Education Fund and Mr. Pike also a member gave brief talks at funeral.
CISCO. Died 16-08-1944. Lt. George Edward Cisco, 26 year old Army Air Force pilot was killed Wednesday, August 16, in a plane accident at Waterboro, South Carolina. The Cisco family formerly lived in Jerseyville and Lt. Cisco is the first colored man from Jersey County to lose his life in the present world conflict. Lt. Cisco was the son of the late Roscoe, well-known Jerseyville musician and Mrs. George E. Ritchie of Alton. His wife Mrs. Claire Jackson Cisco and young daughter have been residing in Danville. Funeral at Streeper Funeral Home in Alton, Aug. 21. Burial in Alton Cemetery.
CISCO. Died 1918. Goerge W. Cisco, eldest son of George A. Cisco (Col.) of this city died in France of flu. 32. For the past 9 years. he had been in Beatrice Neb. with the Dalbey family and entered service last summer with contingent from Beatrice, training at Camp Funston. CLAFLIN. Died 03-09-1974. Funeral services for Clyde W. Claflin, 90, will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, Sept. 5, at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville with the Rev. Leonard Todd officiating. His death occurred at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 3 at his home on R. R. 1 Fieldon. Interment will be in the Dayton Cemetery near Eldred. A farmer, he was born Aug. 30, 1884 in Greene Co., a son of George and Margaret Short Claflin. He is survived by nieces and nephews, Marvin, Clyde, Pearl, Floyd and Glenn Isringhausen and Mrs. William Gettings, Sr. His parents and one sister, Florence Claflin Isringhausen preceded him in death. Visitation was held at Jacoby Funeral Home.
CLAGG. Died 12-10-1987. Melissa Jane Clagg, three day old daughter of John and Sharon (Moore) Clagg, died at 8 am Monday, Oct 12 1987, at Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis. Melissa Jane was born in Alton on 9 Oct 1987. In addition to her parents, surviving are two brothers, Andrew and Jeffrey Clagg, both at home; maternal grandparents, Keith and Norma Moore of Medora; maternal great grandparents, Elmer and Mildred Wagenblast and Rose Moore, all of Medora; paternal grandparents, Earl and Winnie Clagg of Jerseyville; and paternal great grandparents Earl and Mildred Clagg of Galatia and Beaula Stone of East Alton. Grave side services will be conducted at 1030 am Wednesday at the Oak Lawn cemetery in Medora. Targhetta Funeral Home of Medora is in charge of the arrangements.
CLAGG. Died 05-05-1990. Winnie J. Clagg, 57, died Saturday, May 5, 1990, at Alton Memorial Hospital. She was a secretary for the Southwestern School District No. 9 in Piasa. Born in Marble Hill, Mo., she was the daughter of Beaulah (Beasley) Stone of Rosewood Heights and the late Ercele Stone. On Jan 27, 1952, in Cottage Hills, she married the Rev. Earl D. Clagg. He survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Cindy Ruyle of Jerseyville; a son, John Clagg of Jerseyville; six grandchildren; two sisters, Elwanda Liley of Rosewood Heights and Lorna Chappell of St. Louis, Mo.; and a brother, Van Stone of Sarasota FL. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter and a sister Ravenelle Stone. Visitation is from 4 to 9 pm Tuesday at Targhetta Funeral Home in Medora. Visitation continues from 9 am Wednesday until service time at 11 am at Bethel Baptist Church near Medora. The Revs. Don Tindale and Max Klinkenborg will officiate. Burial is in the Oakland cemetery in Fidelity. Memorials may be made to the church, where she was a member, or to the American Cancer Society.

Her death occurred July 15 at Alton Memorial Hospital. Her husband Charles Henry Clanney died Nov. 8, 1955. She was born in Grafton April 7 1893, a daughter of Frank and Anna M. Willmanm Chase. She is survived by one son, Charles Clanney, New Albany, IN; three daughters, Evelyn Ennis and Ardith Nation, Alton, and a Beulah Compton, Grafton; 18 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 1 g-great granddaughter. CLARK. Died 28-10-1955. Clinton C. Clark, a physical therapist at the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Quincy, died unexpectedly Friday evening, Oct. 28, at 7:40 p.m., at his cottage at the Home. The decedent was a son of the late Charles C., and Elizabeth Bright Clark and was born in Jersey County on January 29, 1875. His age at the time of death was sixty years, eight months, and twenty-nine days. Mr. Clark was a veteran of World War I and was a former school teacher in Jersey County. He is survived by two sons, Wayne Clark, and Melvin G. Clark of Brentwood, Missouri; two sisters, Mrs. Myra Boushka and Mrs. Eugene Fritz, both of Jerseyville; one brother, Clyde W. Clark of Alton, and two grandchildren. The body was brought to Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville where friends called. Funeral rites were held at the Funeral Home Monday afternoon, October 31, at two o’clock with Rev. R. W. Hale, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by members of Worthey Post, No. 492, American Legion.

CLARK. Died 10-04-1983. Fred Leo Clark, 77 of Grafton died at 7 a.m. April 10 at Jersey Community Hospital. He was born Dec. 12, 1905 in Fieldon, son of the late Lewis and Alice Tinsmen Clark, and married the former Mildred Neva Scoggins, April 23, 1935 in Jerseyville. Clark worked at the Illinois Powder Mill at Grafton for 21 years and later was a press operator at the Alton Telegraph. His survivors are his wife; three sisters, Allie Gilleland, Audrey Weaver, Cottage Hills, and Dorothy Manning, of Grafton, nieces and nephews. Private visitation and services were at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home with burial in the Borlin Cemetery in Carrollton. The American Heart Association has been named as a memorial.

CLARK. Died 03-12-1970. George W. Clark, 71 year old resident of Godfrey, died Thursday morning, December 3 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Alton. He was retired clerk at the old New York Central Railroad Office where he had worked for 47 years. Mr. Clark was born in Jerseyville May 25, 1899 and was educated in the Jerseyville schools. Final rites were conducted Saturday morning at the Morrow-Quinn Mortuary in Alton. Mr. Clark is survived by his wife Mrs. Thelma Elliott Clark, a daughter, Miss Ethel Diane Clark at home; two brothers Fred L. and Charles D. both of Alton, and a sister, Mrs. William Miller of St. Louis.
CLARK. Died 23-11-1869. Died at residence of Mrs. K. C. Marsh, in Jersey, on Saturday the 23rd, Mrs. Mary Clark, 80 years. We are seldom called upon to record the death of one for whom we have so much veneration as for Mrs. Clark. Mrs. Clark was a daughter-in-law of Amos Clark, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Her husband, long deceased, served in the war of 1812.

Mother died when Mary was 13 years old. For a number of years she was the mother in the home. April 23, 1857 married at Pittsfield, Ill., to Robert H. Clark. Seven children, two died in infancy and daughter Laura L. at age 20. Children surviving: Mrs. Cora E. Cooper, Mrs. Althea C Post, Robert E. Clark of Jersey., and Wm H. Clark of St. Louis five grandchildren one sister, Mrs. Emma Brown of Maplewood, Mo. formerly of Summer Hill, Ill. two great grandchildren.
CLARK. Died 05-10-1987. Mildred Neva Clark, 71, died at 4:10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, 1987 at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. She was born in Carrollton, daughter of the late John and Martha (Holmes) Scoggins. On April 22, 1935, she married Fred Leo Clark, and he died April 10, 1983. Mrs. Clark had been a waitress at Grafton area restaurants and taverns. Survivors include a brother, Charles D. Scoggins of Carrollton; four sisters, Edith Stine of Carrollton, Ida Howland of Grantie City and Ethel Beldon of Hartford; nieces and nephews. Visitation will be form 10 a.m Wednesday until the time of services at 2 p.m at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Grafton. Rev. Patrick Carroll will officiate. Burial will be in Borlin Cemetery, southwest of Carrollton. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Grafton.

His wife, the former Betty Jean Hughes, died April 1, this year. He was born June 23, 1923 in Bellvue, Pa., a son of William Nease and Adelaide McCoy Clarke, Sr. and was a sales executive. He is survived by three sons, R. Evans Clarke, Washington, Richard and Robert of Rosedale; a daughter, Nargot N. Clarke of Quincy and one brother, William N. Clarke jr., New York, N. Y.
CLARK. Died 20-12-1953. Mrs. Robert Clark has received messages reporting the deaths of two relatives, both former residents of Jerseyville. William H. Clark, a brother of Robert E. Clark, deceased, died December 20 at his home in El Monte, California, after an illness of more than six months. He was born and reared in Jerseyville and was a son of the late Robert H., and Mary Jane Lutz Clark. His wife, the former Miss Mattie Updike, preceded him in death three years ago. The couple resided in St. Louis for a number of years and upon retiring Mr. Clark and family moved to California where he has since resided. He is survived by a son, Harold Clark of San Gabriel, Calif., and a daughter, Mrs. Clarence Hogue of El Monte, a sister, Mrs. Althea Post of Glendale, Calif., and several grandchildren. Mr. Clark had celebrated his 85th birthday last March 17.
CLARK. Died 28-07-1911. William H. Clark died at his home in Carrollton, Friday, July 28th, 1911, at 8 oclock a.m., aged 86 years, five months and 20 days. Deceased was born March 8, 1825, in Haddenham, England. He came to America in November, 1850, locating in Lockport, N. Y., where he for ten years engaged in the nursery business, and there he cast his first vote for Abraham Lincoln. He came to Carrollton in October, 1860. In 1827, he was married to Miss Ann Whitting, daughter of a local Methodist minister in England. She died two years later after coming to this country, and the following year he was married to Miss Frances Hover. Three children were born to him by his second wife. One child died in infancy. Those living are Wm. H. W. Clark of Chicago, Misses Elizabeth and Frances Clark of Carrollton, Mrs. Mary Landiss of Jerseyville, and Miss Emily Clark. He is also survived by three brothers, John, aged 82, died in England in March. Mr. Clark was converted in Lockport, N. Y., and there united with the M. E. church and became a class leader and member of the official board. When he moved to Carrollton he placed his letter with the church here and has ever since been a faithful member. CLARKE. Died 01-04-1978. The funeral of Mrs. Betty Jean Clarke, 50, of R. 1 Grafton will be held at 1:30 p.m. April 4 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville with the Rev. Robert Patterson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. She died at 10:56 p.m April 1 at St. Mary’s Health Center in Richmond Heights, Mo. after an extended illness. She was born Sept. 29, 1927 in Hartford, a daughter of William H. and Barbara Pruitt Hughes. Her survivors are her husband, Richard C. Clark; one daughter Mrs. Cheryl Vambaketes of Godfrey; and three sisters, Mrs. Lloyd Martin of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Mrs. Bruce Kamp of Godfrey and Mrs. James Warford of Grafton; two grandchildren. CLARKE. Died -07-1964. Funeral services were held at ten-thirty o’clock Wednesday morning at the Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville for Mrs. Marie L. Clarke, widow of Robert Clarke, whose death occurred Monday noon at Waters Nursing Home where she had resided for some time. The Reverend M. Edwards Breed officiated and burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Clarke, a daughter of the late Henry C. and Harriet S. Warren Lovell, was born in Jerseyville, August 25, 1876. he is survived by one brother, George W. Lovell of Webster Groves, Missouri, and nieces and nephews. Her parents, two sisters, Miss Gertrude Lovell and Mrs. Jennie Hale, and one brother Dr. Frank A. Lovell, preceded her in death.
CLARKSON. Died 08-10-1986. Kenneth R. Clarkson, 42, died at 6:21 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1986, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Alton. He was a shipmate on a barge line, born in Chicago Heights, son of the late Otis and Mary (Houchins) Clarkson. On April 26, 1971, in Hardin, he married the former Linda Middlecoff, and she survives. Also surviving, are a daughter, Lisa at home: Three sisters, Helen Antrobus, Ruth Taylor and Dorothy Paddock, all of Grafton; and four brothers, Elza “Cotton” Clarkson of South Holland, Ill. Lilburn “Abe” Clarkson of Crete, Roy Clarkson of Kansas City, Mo., and David Clarkson of Grafton. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday. Rev. Patrick Carroll will officiate. CLARKSON. Died 20-11-1980. The funeral of Moleta “Mary” Clarkson, 76, of 414 Clinton, Grafton was held Saturday afternoon at Jacoby Bros Funeral Home in Grafton with the Rev. Robert Patterson officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery, Jerseyville. She died at 9:25 a.m. Nov. 20 at Jersey Community Hospital. Born April 1, 1904 in Pike County, she was the daughter of Abner and Mary Louvolia Houchins. She married Otis James Clarkson April 29, 1922; he died May 25, 1963. Her survivors include five sons, Elza J. Clarkson, South Holland, Lilburn Clarkson, Thorton, Roy Clarkson, Kansas City, Mo., Kenneth and David Clarkson, both of Grafton; four daughters, Margaret Fester and Helen Antrobus of Jerseyville, Ruth Taylor, Crete, Dorothy Paddock, Grafton; 25 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, a daughter, two brothers, two grandchildren and a great grandchild. The United Way or Leukemia Foundation are memorials.
CLARY. Died 25-09-1977. Leora Clary, 66, of Wood River, mother of Mrs. Robert Ray of Jerseyville died at 4:36 p.m. Sept. 26 at Jersey Community Hospital. She was born July 6, 1911 the daughter of Fred and Lydia Woolsey Martin. She married Louis Clary who died in 1970. Surviving are two daughters, Gloria Ray of Jerseyville and Mrs. Richard (Cleo) Willcoxen, of Roswell, N. M.; one son, Stewart Murray of Hebron; 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Preston Martin and Fred martin, both of Jerseyville, and a sister, Mrs. Ethel Drage, Jerseyville. Funeral services will be held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, with the Rev. Everett Chambers officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Jacoby Funeral Home after4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27.
CLATWORTHY. Died -01-1897. Died at her home in Kansas City, Kan. Mrs. ELiza Clatworthy. Born at Wellington, Devonshire, England, Sept. 9, 1830. Married Edwin Clatworthy Sept 13, 1855. Seven children, five are left to mourn loss of mother. Mrs. W. E. Kingsley of Scranton, Kan., Mrs. Clara Steward, of Carthage, Mo., Mrs. J. L. Johnson and Miss Lida Clatworthy of Kansas City, Kan. 66 years of age.
CLAUSEN. Died 23-07-1985. Former Jersey County Superintendent of Highways George C. Clausen, 80, Godfrey, died July 23, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Alton, where he had been a patient for four days. Clausen was born Dec. 29, 1904, in Fancher, the son of Henry O. and Bertha A. Terwillinger Clausen. He married Mary E. Rodd in Muphysboro. Clausen was a civil engineer for the State of Illinois and retired form the position of Jersey County Superintendent of Highways July 1, 1973. Clausen is a past master of the Gothic Masonic Lodge, 852 AF&AM, Belleville; past commander of Emmanuel Commandery 81, Granite City, and had held numerous honorary memberships in area Masonic Lodges. He was a member of the Lodge Council Chapter, Consistory Valley of Southern Illinois; Anaid Shrine, East St. St. Louis; St. Clair Council 61, Granite City; Cahokia Chapter 156, Cahokia; Queen City Chpater 697, Order of Eastern Star, Pariview Heights; Jersey County Farm Bureau, and Illinois Association of Superintendents of Highways. Clausen was awarded the Knight of the York Cross honor in 1960 at East. St. Louis. He is survived by his wife, Mary of Godfrey; daughters Agnes M. Hackmann of O’Fallon, Rosemary E. McJury of Annandale, Va., and Joyce E. Nodine of Brighton; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister Mary F. Claine of East Alton; and brother – rest of paragraph missing.

Married Christina Younkin, April 4, 1843. Married 55 years – leaves wife, one daughter, Mrs., Anna Bohannan – 5 grandchildren – Eddie and Ettie Bohannan – Mrs. Gertrude Elliott – Howard Green and George Senior. Funeral from ME Church – Rev. CLAYTON. Died 22-11-1988. Lester Clayton, 73, died at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, 1988, at his residence. Clayton served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded a victory medal. He was born in Galesburg, son of the late Elmer and Lucille (Kruise) Clayton. A construction worker, he married the former Hazel Sager June 6, 1969, in Denver, Colo., and retired in 1977 from Union Local 646. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Carol Haden of Raleigh, N. C.; and two sisters, Gloria Frazeur of Prot Townsend, Wash., and Fern Cooper of Placerville, Calif. Visitation is 4-9 p.m. Sunday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday by the Rev. James Pepper. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery at Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association.
CLENDENEN. Died 20-03-1975. The funeral of Albert Henry Clendenen, 65, of R. R. 1, Kane was conducted Sunday afternoon March 23, at the Kane Baptist Church with the Rev. Garold Cooper officiating. He was pronounced dead on arrival at 4:15 a.m., Thursday, March 20, at Boyd Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. Burial was in the Kane Cemetery. Clendenen was a former bus driver and mechanic at the bus garage for Community Unit 100. His survivors are his widow, the former Stella Mae Burch; a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Jean Rice of Vallejo, Calif., three sons, Clifford Dale of Vernon, Conn., Billy Joe of Fieldon and Robert Lee of Alton; his mother Mrs. Bertha Portwood Clendened of Eldred; four brothers, Harold of East St. Louis, Edward of Bull Shoals, Ark., Glen and Carol Wayne, Eldred; four sisters, Mrs. Viola Mitchell of Eldred, Mrs. Dorothea Smith of Jacksonville, Mrs. Claudia Denny of California, and Mrs. Clara Ellen Inglis of Eustis, Fla., and 10 grandchildren. The King Solomon Masonic Lodge conducted rites Saturday evening at the Hires Funeral Home, Carrollton. The Illinois Heart Association was named as a memorial.

Clendenen of Pasadena, Calif formerly C & A agent in Jerseyville, stating that his mother, Mrs. Minnie Clendenen, also former resident of Jerseyville died at home in Pasadena, Feb. 22. Brought to Jerseyvillet o Coulthard home. interment in OG cem. Rev. F. O. Wilson.
CLENDENEN. Died -01-1885. Samuel Clendenen, for several years a resident of this city, died at his residence, in the northern part of Jersey. He has been sick ever since he came out of the army and last year received about $2,200 back pension with which he bought a home and saved a good part of the remainder. Leaves a wife and 9 children – 8 of them under 16, His widow will receive 8 dollars and each of the 8 children two dollars per month if she does not marry again. Funeral took place Monday. CLENDENNY. Died 16-01-1981. The funeral of Ethel G. Clendenny, 54, of 107 Marion, Jerseyville was held Monday afternoon at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home with burial in McDow Cemetery, Otterville. The Revs. James Maxwell and Clyde Shaw officiated. She died at 4:50 p.m. Jan. 16 at St. Luke’s East Hospital, St. Louis. She was born May 25, 1926 in Hartford, a daughter of Raymond and Sadie Eisler Campbell. Surviving are her mother, Sadie Campell of Jerseyville; a son, Robert M. Blaine Jr.,Brighton; two daughters, Sandra Lamparter, Otterville and JoEllen Mellonthin, Godfrey; four brothers, Raymond Campbell, East Alton, Donnie, Kenny and Darrel Campbell of Jerseyville; two sisters, Mary Louise Pointer, Jerseyville and Betty Baumgartner, Denver, Colo. and five grandchildren.
CLENDENNY. Died -10-1981. Eugene W. Clendenny, 54, died at 4:10 a.m. today at Alton Memorial Hospital. Born in Belleview, a son of Freeman Clendenny of Jerseyville and the late Mabel (Johnson) Clendenny, he was a pipe inspector at Laclede Steel. In addition to his father, surviving are his wife, the former Jessie Bock, whom he married on Oct. 26, 1979, in Jerseyville; four sons, William and James, both of Jerseyville, Joseph of Oxford, Wis., and Jeff of Alton; a stepson, Ernie McKinney of Kane; and three daughters, Geraldine Patton of Jerseyville, Judy Mathews of Eldred and Janet Tripenbach of St. Libory. Also surviving are five step daughters, Janice Smith of Mt. Vernon, Judy Trochuck and Donna Clendenny, both of Jerseyville, Carol Kelly of Me- rest of paragraph missing.
CLEVE. Died 23-06-1981. Services for Gertrude L. Cleve, 75, of Farmington, Mo., were held at Millers Funeral Home there with burial in Doe Run Cemetery. She died at 8 p.m. June 23 at her home. She was born in Hamburg, a daughter of Henry and Idalbelle Carnes Grandsinger. Mrs. Cleve lived in Jerseyville for several years. Her survivors are a daughter, Colleen Francis of Seattle, Wash.; two sons, Waldo of Seattle, Wash. and Jim of Farmington, Mo.; a sister, Bernice Hazelwonder of Jerseyville; five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Cleve who died in1970, a sister, Utha Thomas, two brothers Jim and Joe Grandsinger. The Heart Fund has been named as a memorial.

CLINE. Died -10-1918. Emanuel LeRoy of Fidelity, son of Emanuel Cline, well known Farmer died Saturday. Had gone to Camp Custer. Body brought to home near Fidelity. Funeral from Fidelity Methodist Church. Leaves parents, a brother Irl Cline, and sister, Mrs. Ray Searles.
CLINE. Died 27-03-1972. Chester L. Cline of 1541 Service Street, East Gary, Indiana, where he had lived for the past twenty-one years, died Monday March 27, at Mercy Hospital in Gary. Funeral services were held in East Gary Tuesday and the body was then flown to St. Louis and brought to Jerseyville. Visitation was held at Gubser Funeral Home after four o’clock Wednesday afternoon where funeral services will be held at two o’clock this (Thursday) afternoon with Reverend James Rucker, Pastor of the Bethel Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in the East Newbern Cemetery. Mr. Cline was born in Jersey County and lived in Alton before moving to Gary where he was employed by the Power and Fuel Division of the U. S. Steel Gary Works before his retirement. He was a member of the Steel Workers Union 1014 of Gary. His survivors are his wife, Laura; two daughter, Mrs. Delores Cummings and Mrs. Mary Lou miller of East Gary; three sons, Delmar of New Orleans, Lawernce Lyle of East Alton and Marion E. of East – rest of paragraph missing.
CLINE. Died -03-1957. Within a quarter of an hour after he had been watching his favorite television programs last Thursday night Elmer Willard Cline, a farmer of Fidelity Township, was stricken with a heart attack that resulted in his death. His health had been impaired since he suffered a serious heart attack September 2, but Mr. Cline had improved and was able to be up and around his farm. His death Thursday night came as a shock to relatives and friends. Friends called at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral services were held at the Funeral Home Monday, March 11, at two o’clock. Reverend W. M. Greer of Gillespie officiated and interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mr. Cline was born in Springfield, July 30, 1894, a son of the late Edward and Elizabeth Dillon Cline. His age at the time of death was sixty-two years, seven months, and seven days. Surviving the decedent are his wife, Mrs. Lucy M. Cline; two daughters, Mrs. Ray Reese and Mrs. Irwin Ashlock of Jerseyville; two grandchildren; four brothers, Oren Cline of Weott, California, John Cline of Berkely, California, Alonzo Cline of Alton, and Chester Cline of Gary, Indiana; and one sister, Mrs. Albert Holteen of Portland Oregon.
CLINE. Died 18-04-1973. Funeral rites for Hubert L. Cline, 56, of Niles, Michigan, formerly of Jerseyville, will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Sumnerville Bible Baptist Church in Sumnerville, Michigan, with the Rev. George Matthew officiating. He died at his home on April 18. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville Monday afternoon, April 23, at 1:00 o’clock. A boiler maker, he was born August 14, 1916 in Cartersville, Georgia. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Donna Gray Cline; children, Gary, Brenda, and Rebecca at home; a stepdaughter; his father, Joe A. Cline, Cartersville; two daughters, Mrs. Darlene Stephenson of Reno and Belle Ann Cline; and a son, Lee; and two sisters.

Died 09-03-1975 The funeral of Mrs. Mary Laura Cline, 72, of 1541 Service St. East Gray, Ind., formerly of this area will be conducted this afternoon, March 13, at 2 p.m. from Gubser Funeral Home with the Rev. John Sims of the Bethel Cemetery. She died Sunday, March 9, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Hobart, Ind. She was born Dec. 28, 1902 in Alton, the daughter of Lawrence and Flossie Burley Michael, and had lived in Gary 24 years. She was a member of the Portage War Mothers. Her husband, Chester Cline, died March 30, 1972 Her survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Delores Cummings and Mrs. mary Lou Miller, both of East Gary; three sons, Delmar of New Orleans, la., Lawrence Lyle Cline of East Alton and Marvin E. Cline of East Gary.
CLINES. Died -07-1908. The funeral of John Clines, and old resident of Jersey Co., took place from St. Francis church, Friday morning, Father J. J. Driscoll. His relatives find from the church records at his birth place in Ireland that he was 110 years old.
CLOSE. Died 28-12-1978. Graveside services were conducted at Oak Grove cemetery Saturday for Ernest Edward Close, 72, of 3949 Blaine, St Louis, Mo., formerly of Jerseyville. The Rev R.E. George officiated. He died at 7:20 pm Dec 28 at City Hospital in St Louis. He was born in Kane 31 May 1906, a son of Joseph and Glendola Doo Wittaco and was a general laborer. His survivors are two sons, Delbert of Largo, FL and Wm. of Bethalto; two daughters, Viola Locke of Newport Richey, FL and Marcella Jackson of Columbus, OH
CLOSSER. Died 09-05-1980. Margaret E. Closser, 57, of 5511 Ladue, Godfrey, died at 12:15 pm Thursday at St Joseph Hospital following a lengthy illness. Born in Jerseyville, a daughter of the late Wm. J. and Marguerite (Roady) Gaber, she married Lee V. Closser on 11 Jul 1942 in St. Charles MO. In addition to her husband surviving is a brother, Charles Gaber of Godfrey. Visitation will be after 4 pm today at Gubser Funeral Home, Jerseyville, where services will be held at 2 pm Sat. with the Rev. Rob’t. Bowling officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Grove cemetery, and the American Cancer Society and the Cherry St. Baptist Church of Alton, have been named as memorials.
CLOSSER. Died 25-02-1981. The funeral of Sarah Elizabeth Closser, 81, who has resided at Greenwood Manor for three years, was held Friday afternoon at Gubser Funeral Home, Rev James Maxwell officiated and the burial was at the Oak Grove cemetery. She died at 7:50 am, 25 Feb 1981 at the Jersey Community Hospital. Born March 3 1899 in Salisbury MO, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Etta Mae Lewis Montgomery. Her survivors are three sons, Lee V. Closser of Godfrey, Robert of Milton, Iowa and Sam of Drakesville, Iowa. Five daughters. Katherine Bucanan of Dow, Dorothy Beiser of Jerseyville; Geraldine Weaver and Ruth Henderson of Ottumwa, Iowa and Betty Blasa of Fieldon; 30 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister. Memorials suggested are the Jerseyville Assembly of God Church of which she was a member and the Delhi Baptist Church.
CLOTHIER. Died 28-11-1989. Andy C. Clothier, 65, died at 3:30 pm Tuesday, Nov 28 1989, at Alton Memorial Hospital. He was a self-employed auto mechanic and a WWII U.S. Army veteran. Born in Greene county, he was the son of the late Thomas and Dora Peters Clothier. He married the former Alberta Schumann on July 7 1948, in Kane and she survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Sherry Cooper of Jerseyville; two brothers, James of White Hall and Carl of Grafton; and four sisters, Lena Story of Jerseyville, Retha Field of Alton, Agnes Bizaillion of Greenfield and Nellie Bramley of Chesterfield. A sister, Rosella Clothier preceded him in death. Visitation is from 4 to 9 pm. Friday and services at 2 pm Saturday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Rev. Simon A. Simon will officiate. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Jerseyville American Legion and the VFW Post 492 at Oak Grove Cemetery, Jerseyville. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes or American Heart Associations.
