MODE. Died 00-05-1928. From Jersey County News, dated 10 May 1928: Mrs. Emma Mode died at her home in northeast part of town. Cardiac asthma. Her sister, Mrs. Mary Abner of East Alton died two days before. 62 years old. Mrs. Abner 65 years old. Mrs Mode is widow of late Philip Mode who died in 1905. 2 daughters, Mrs. Warren Gray of Jerseyville and Mrs. Walter Murray of St. Louis. Four grandchildren, two brothers, five sisters. A daughter, Mrs. Lula Gargus, is deceased.
MODE. Died 07-02-1908. John Mode died at his home in this city, Friday, February 7, 1908, aged 75 years, 1 month and 18 days. The funeral services were conducted from the German Evangelical church at 2 o’clock on Sunday afternoon Rev. C. R. Hempel officiating. Mr. Mode has been a resident of this city for more than forty years and was highly respected by all who knew him.
February, 10, 1908. John Mode died Friday morning at his home in Jerseyville, following an attack of pneumonia. He is survived by three sons and three daughters, one of them being Mrs. Ahrens, wife of Louis Ahrens of Wanda. Mrs. Ahrens went to Jerseyville Saturday and her husband followed yesterday. They attended the funeral which was yesterday afternoon.
MODE. Died 00-12-1894. From Jerseyville Republican, dated December 1894: Mrs. Kate Mode, wife of John G. Mode, 29 years. Funeral from home. Rev. Tyson.
MODE. Died 00-00-1905. From Jerseyville Republican, dated 2 July 1905: Philip Mode had blood poisoning and typhoid fever. 44 years. Good business man, kin and generous. Leaves wife and 3 daughters. Funeral from Presbyterian Church. Modern Woodman of American. Rev. C. Nash.
MODLIN. Pauline Marie Modlin, 86, died at 3:20 pm Monday, March 7, 1988 at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. She was born in Jerseyville, the daughter of the Late Remig and Francesca (Schmid) Hund. She married Harry Modlin July 12, 1920 in Jerseyville and he survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Ramone Nolan of Kane and Esther Sareny of El Paso, Texas; nine grandchildren ; 12 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Cardenas; and two brothers, John Hurd and Ray Farmer. Visitation will be 4-9 pm Wednesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville where services will be conducted 2pm Thursday by the Rev. Charles Epperly. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the First Baptist church of Jerseyville, where Mrs. Modlin had been a member.
MOFFATT. Nicholas William Moffatt, 6 weeks, died February 9 at his parents home in Route 1, Dow. He was born December 31, 1985 in Alton to John and Linda Moffatt. Survivors in addition to his parents, include sisters, Kimberly and Ashley, both at home; brothers John Jr. and Scott, both at home; grandparents Mr. and Mrs. William Harned of Belleville and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Moffatt of Hometown. The funeral was February 11 at Calvary cemetery in St. Louis with the Rev. Don Sullivan officiating. Memorials have been established to Cardinal Glennon Hospital for Children and the American Heart Association.
MOHR. Rev. Gertrude Mohr, 84, died at 1:05 Monday, November 17, 1986 at her residence. She had been an Assemblies of God minister for 42 years, having been the pastor at the Assembly of God in Fidelity and part-time minister at the Jerseyville, Eldred, and Carrollton Assesmblies of God. She was born in Carlinville, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Loveless, and had married John Mohr in 1922 in Carlinville. He died January 26, 1959. Surviving are a son, William Dale Mohr, of Jerseyville; an adopted son, Michael Bryson of Woodburn; a daughter, Berda Russell of Fidelity; nine grandchildren;10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Berda Walton of Carlinville. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Wednesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Services will be conducted at 2 pm Thursday at the Assembly of God church in Fidelity with Rev. Craig Mohr officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorial may be given to the Assembly of God in Fidelity.
MOHR. Died 00-03-1926. Jerseyville Republican, dated March 18, 1926: Mrs. Fred Mohr of Bethel area died at her home. 60 years. Funeral from Bethel Baptist Church. Elder T. J. Roady of Kane. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Leaves husband, 2 daughters, one son. They are Mrs. J. Frank of Chesterfield, Mrs. Celia Baker of Bethel and Wesley Mohr of Medora.
MOHR. Died 00-00-1982. Dated 11-10-1982: Norman Dale Mohr, 55, of 320 Highland, died at 8:15 pm Saturday at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. Born in Jersey County, son of Beulah (Bolin) Mohr of Greenfield and the late Lloyd Mohr, he was employed as a police officer with the Secretary of State for 12 years. He retired in September, 1982. The World War II veteran married the former Maxine Tuey on April 18, 1948 in Alton. In addition to his wife and mother, surviving are two daughters, Marlene Waters of Eldred and Debra Goodall of Vandalia; two grandchildren; two Sisters, Ella Mae Borders of Union City, Tenn and Florence Chopps of Crown Point, Indiana; and two brothers, John of Wrights and Jim of Wood River. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm today at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home where serives will be conducted at 2 pm Tuesday with the Rev. Clyde Myers officiating. Burial will be in Carrollton City cemetery and memorials may be made to Belivers Baptist church in Carrollton, of which he was a member, or to the American Cancer Society.
MOHR. William Dale Mohr, 61, died at 12;25 am Thursday, September 29, 1988, at St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton. Mohr, a US Army veteran of the Korean war, worked for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corp. in St. Louis for 33 years. He retired in 1988. Born in Jerseyville, he was the son of the late John William and Gertrude (Loveless) Mohr. On May 22, 1954 he married the former Betty L. Willis, in Sentobia, Mississippi. She survives. Also surviving are two Daughters, Elaine Fowler and Christy Mohr, both of Jerseyville; three sons, William S. Mohr of Jerseyville, Craig Mohr of Cincinnati, Ohio, and David Mohr of Godfrey; four grandchildren; a sister, Berda Russell of Fidelity and a brother, Michael Bryson of Alton. Visitation will be 4-9 pm Saturday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be conducted 2 pm Sunday by the Rev. Lucile Anderson. Military rites will be conducted at Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville by Jerseyville VFW and American Legion Post 492. Memorials may begiven to Fidelity Assembly of God church.
MOHRMAN. Died 21-10-1926. Dated November 4, 1926: Mary Etta Gross born September 12, 1876, died October 21. Married George Mohrman January 14, 1903. 50 years. Three children: two died infancy. One son, Harold survives. Leaves husband, son, parents, one sister, Mrs. Ada Bennett. One brother, John Gross, Jr. preceded her. Kemper Baptist church, later Bethel Baptist. Funeral at Medora Baptist Rev. Lewis Julianell.
MOLINET. Died 10-11-1898. Jersey County Democrat, dated November 17, 1898: Mrs. Bernadina Molinet died at home of daughter, Mrs. Ottile Schmieder. November 10, 86 years. Funeral from Holy Ghost church. Rev. F. A. Marks.
MOLOHON. Died 06-04-1974. Dated 11 April 1974: Funeral mass was celebrated at St. Francis Xavier church Saturday morning, April 6, for Mrs. Catherine O. Molohon, 76, of 610 Forest St., Jerseyville. Father R. T. Shea was celebrant. Interment was in St. Francis Xavier cemetery. Her death occurred April 4 at Jersey Community Hospital. Born June 26, 1897 in St. Lawrence, Kentucky, she was a daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Frank Walthen. Her survivors are her husband, William Molohon; two daughers, Mrs. John H. Albrecht of Carrollton and sister Mary Callista of Algonquin; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and one Brother, R. T. Walthen of Louisville, Kentucky. Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where the rosary was recited Friday evening.
MOLOHON. Died 11-02-1986. Dated 26 February 1986: William David Molohon, 62, of Jerseyville, died February 11 at his residence. He was born August 31, 1923 in Colverport, Kentucky to the late William and Catherine (Wathen) Molohon. He married Opal Wadlow on June 6, 1970. He was a veteran of World War II and a TV repairman. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier church, the Jerseyville American Legion and VFW.
MONROE. Died 14-03-1977. Dated 3-27-77: Eric Joseph Monroe, seven year old son of S.Sgt and Mrs. Addis William Monroe, 4457d Santa Fe, Scofield Barracks, Hawaii, formerly of Jerseyville, died of leukemia at 1:30 pm on March 14 at a hospital in Hawaii. His father has been stationed in Hawaii two years. He was born September 2, 1969 at Ft. Riley, Kansas. His mother is the former Polly Keehner. In addition to his parents he is survived by two half-sisters, Debra Miller of Jerseyville and Penny Moreno, of Texas; four half Brothers, Michael Anderson of Jerseyville and Larry, Billy and Jimmy Monroe of Missouri; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Glatt of Delhi and paternal grandparents, Mrs. Ruth Brown of Chautauqua and George Monroe. Military services were conducted Thursday afternoon at the Ft. Derussy Chapel in Hawaii. He was buried in full military dress in the National Cemetery of the Pacific. St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee or any leukemia center has been suggested as a memorial. (Picture of eric included in is obituary.)
MONROE. Died 16-06-1974. Dated 6-20-74: Man died in auto wreck. Lloyd Eugene Monroe, 22 year old son of Commissioner and Mrs. Lloyd Monroe, 505 S. Lafayette St., died of injuries suffered in a single car accident about 8:40 pm June 16, on Route 109, two miles south of Jerseyville. Monroe and Dennis Webb, 22, of 704 East Carpenter St., occupants of a Corvette, were thrown clear as the auto flipped several times before coming to a rest on an enbankment and catching on fire. Monroe was thrown out onto the pavement and Webb was hurled into a ditch. The Jerseyville fire department was called to the scene to extinguish the fire, which burned a telephone cable in half. According to the investigating officer, Trooper Wayne Rowlings, the auto was traveling south on Route 109, skidded some twenty feet, ran off the highway on the east side of the pavement, struck the embankment, flipped several times, and came to rest headed west, with the rear of the car up the embankment. The auto struck a telephone pole during the flips. The fiberglass body parts were found some 400 feet from the scene. The rest of the car was completely destroyed by fire. Both occupants were moved to Jersey Community Hospital where Monroe died a short time later. Webb suffered an injury to the left arm. He told the officer he did not remember anything about the accident. It has not been determined who was driving the car owned by Harold Covili of Jerseyville.
MONROE. Robert T. Monroe, 75, died at 9:07 am Wednesday, February19, 1992, at St. Luke’s hospital west in Chesterfield, Missouri. He retired as a youth supervisor at Pere Marquette Department of Corrections in Grafton, after 16 years of service. Born in Roseclaire on September 8, 1916, he was a son of the late Robert Dell and Mary (Compton) Monroe. He and the former Neva “Tiny” Roark were married May 30, 1946 in Bowling Green, Ohio. Surviving are his wife; three sons, Robert W. and Rick L. Monroe, both of Grafton and Dell D. Monroe of Sparks, Nevada; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A grandson and a brother, William Monroe, preceded him in death. Visitation is from 7 to 9 pm Friday at the First Baptist church in Grafton, where services are at 1 pm Saturday. The Rev. William Hendricks will officiate. Burial is in Scenic Hill cemetery at Grafton. Memorials may be give to the church, where he was a member.
MONROE. Died 20-11-1983. Dated December 6, 1983: Services for William I. Monroe, 78, of Grafton were held November 23 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home, Grafton, with the Rev. William Hendricks officiating. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery. He died at 5:50 pm November 20 at Jersey Community Hospital. A welder at Pontiac Motor Co., he was born October 27, 1905 in Rosclaire to the late Dellar Monroe and Mary Jane Compton. His survivors are his wife, the former Elizabeth S. Maney; a daughter, Myra Lou Cook of Champaign; and a brother, Robert T. Monroe of Grafton.
MONTGOMERY. Died 00-00-1922. Dated 1922: Mrs. Louisa Ashford Montgomery, wife of Hugh H. Montgomery, died at her home, 5070 Maple Ave., St. Louis Thursday morning, at 10:45 after a long illness, at the age of 68 years, 3 months and three days. Mrs. Montgomery was born in Kingston, Mississippi, and was one of a family of 7 children, the daughter of William and Emily Ashford. She came to Jersey County with her parents when quite young, and practically all her life has been spent in this county. Mrs. Montgomery spent a quiet christian life, a loving wife and mother. She was loved by all who knew her, as no sacrifice was ever too great for her when in her power. Even through her longillness she never grew impatient, but tried to be as little trouble as possible, and thinking of those doing for her. One of the phrases spoken shortly before she departed was “Jesus will be with me no matter what happens.” she is survived by her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Sunderland of St. Louis and Mrs. Leroy Thatcher of Jerseyville. A son, William Montgomery, passed away several years ago in Canton, Ohio, another child died in infancy. All of the brothers and sisters survive, they being, Mrs. Blanch A. Chappelle, Mrs. Bertis A. Lewis of St. Louis, Mrs. Allie McAdams of Spokane, Washington, Osborne Ashford of Butte, Montana, William Ashford of Oakland, California, and James Ashford of Ft. Scott, Kansas. The remains were brought to Jerseyville, Friday evening and taken to the home of her cousin, Albert Lamb, where funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30. Rev. George E. Dunn officicated. MOODY. Died 21-11-1976. Dated 11-29-76: Final rites for Mrs. Pansy Jane Moody , 80, of Rural Route Jerseyville, were held on November 23 at Smith Funeral Home in Alton. Burial was in Upper Alton cemetery. Her death occurred at 5:20 pm on November 21 at Jersey Community Hospital. She married Charley Geisler who died in 1921 and later married Charlie Moody who died in 1953. She is survived by a son, Carl Alvin Geisler of New Delhi; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three brothers, Snow and George Stokes of Arkansas, Clifton Stokes of California; and two sisters, Violet Stokes and Lillie Geisler, both of Arkansas.
MOORE. Died 00-10-1964. Dated 10-29-64: Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home at two-thirty o’clock Sunday afternoon for Alvah Hugh Moore, a farmer residing east of Jerseyville, whose death occurred early Friday morning. Rev. W. M. Greer officiated at the rites and burial was in Maple Lawn cemetery. Mr. Moore, a life long resident of Jersey County, was born September 5, 1889, a son of the late Hugh T. and Sarah J. Alward Moore. His age at the time of death was seventy-five years, one month, and eighteen days. He was a veteran of World War I. Although Mr. Moore had been in failing health for sometime his death was unexpected. His survivors are one sister, Mrs. Genela Hembrow of Jerseyville, and four brothers, Clarence Moore of Alton, Herbert Moore of Piasa, and Cecil and Hugh Moore of Jerseyville.
MOORE. Died 25-06-1986. Dated 7-9-1986: Cecil T. Moore, 84, Jerseyville, died at 5:27 pm Wednesday June 25, at Jersey Community Hospital. On December 8, 1923, in Alton, he married the former Rose Wiegand, and she survives. Also surviving are two Sons; Dale Moore of Medora and Keith Moore of Jerseyville; seven grandchildren; a brother, Hugh Moore of Jerseyville. Visitation was at Warner Targhetta Funeral Home, Medora, where services were held with Rev. Earl Clagg and Robert Quick officiating. Burial was at Maple Lawn cemetery, Fidelity, and memorials may be given to the cemetery.
MOORE. Died 13-08-1968. Dated August 15, 1968: C. H. Moore, formerly of Piasa, dies. Clarence H. Moore, 81, of 29 East Elm Street, Alton, died at 8:15 pm Tuesday, August 13, at Barnes hospital in St. Louis, where he had been a patient since August 1. Mr. Moore retired from his farm in Piasa and moved to Alton in 1960. He was the father of Gilbert C. Moore, Jerseyville businessman. He was born in Wichita, Kansas October 14,1886, and came to Jersey County as an infant. He had spent his entire life in this area. Mr. Moore was the son of the Late Hugh T. and Sarah J. Moore. Mr. Moore, active in civic affairs, formerly served on the Board of School Directors and Was an Illinois District Conservation Officer. A long time member of the Piasa Baptist church, he served on the Board of Trustees and was church treasurer for a number of years. Surviving are his widow, the former Lelia G. Frost, whom he married in 1909; one son, Gilbert C. Moore of Jerseyville; two daughters, Mrs. Esther Daniels and Mrs. Vida Vanfossen of Alton; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, Herbert of Piasa, and Cecil and Hugh of Jersey County and one sister, Mrs. Genela Hembrow, also of Jersey County. Three brothers, Alvah, Willie, and Eldon preceded him in death. Visitation will be after 2:00 pm Thursday and funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, at the Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery.
MOORE. Died 26-07-1985. Dated August, 1985: Edward “Ted” Moore, 81 of Fidelity, died July 26 at Robings Manor in Brighton. He was born in Jersey County, the son of the late Charles and Lydia Aydelott Moore. He was a retired trucker and a member of the Teamsters Local No. 525. He married Nora Long on October 20, 1923 in Alton, and she survives. Other survivors include sons Stewart Moore of Godfrey and Joe Moore of Brighton; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The funeral was July 29 at the Warner-Targhetta Funeral Home in Medora with the Revs. William Webber and Robert Quick officiating. Burial wasin Oak Grove cemetery, Jerseyville. Memorial is of one’s choice.
MOORE. Died 00-01-1980. Dated 1-7-80: The funeral of Eugene L. Moore, 79, of 500 S. Pearl, Jerseyville was held Sunday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. L. E. Hutchinson officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. The electrician was born April 16, 1900 in Jersey County, a son of Charles E. and Lydia E. Aydelotte Moore. His survivors are his wife, the former Sarah Marie Brown; one daughter, Joann Bailey of Jerseyville; a brother, Edward Moore of Fidelity; two grandchildren. The Victory Baptist church of Jerseyville or heart fund have been designated as memorials.
MOORE. Died 03-02-1986. Florence Evelyn Moore, 79, of Jerseyville, died February 3 at Deaconess hospital in St. Louis. She was born January 25, 1907 in Humboldt to the late Frank Shirley and Anna Mowrey. She married Donovan Moore on June 6, 1930 in Arthur. She was a member of First United Methodist church in Jerseyville. Survivors include her husband, Donovan, of Jerseyville; sons Phillip of Jerseyville and David of Springfield; Daughters, Shirley Moore of Springfield, Betty Siems of Cambridge, Minnesota, and Marilyn Page of Forest City, North Carolina; nine grandchildren; and a great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother. Visitation was February 5, and the funeral was February 6 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville with the Rev. Mike Michels officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Kidney Foundation.
MOORE. Died 14-12-1976. Dated 12-16-76: Gilbert C. Moore, 65, of 828 Washington Ave., Alton, former mayor of Jerseyville from 1955 to 1959, died at 5:15 pm on December 14 in Alton Memorial hospital. He had suffered a heart attack at an Alton restaurant Monday and was taken to Alton Memorial hospital where he was placed in intensive care, later suffering a massive attack. Moore was owner of Moore’s Oil and Fertilizer, Inc. which was operated in Jerseyville for 25 years. He was a member of the Shriners. Born January 28, 1911, he was a son of Clarence Hall and Lela Frost Moore. He is survived by one son, Carl Moore of Jerseyville; two grandsons; two sisters, Mrs. Ray (Esther) Daniels and Mrs. Marion (Vida) Van Fossen of Alton, and his mother, Mrs. Lela Moore of Alton. The funeral will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday, December 17 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. M. Edwards Breed officiting. Interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call at Jacoby Funeral Home after 3 pm Thursday. The family has designated the Shriners Children’s Hospital as a memorial.

Leaves six sons: Clarence of Piasa, Herbert of Shipman, Alva, Eldon, Cecil and Hugh of Fidelity. One daughter, Mrs. Charles Hembrow of Fidelity. Cousins, Belle and Nettie Stanley, S. D. Stanley, E. B. Stanley, Carrie Warren. Burial in Maple Lawn cemetery, formerly known as Oakland cemetery north of Fidelity.

Moore formerly of Fidelity, and the mother of Mildred I., James M. and the Late Stella Miner and Muriel Craig; grandmother of James M. Moore, Jr., sister of the late Dr. Garreston of Peoria and a niece of Mrs. M. A. Dodge of Jerseyville.
MOORE. Died 12-08-1909. Jerseyville Republican, dated August 19, 1909: James M. Moore born in Knox County, Tennessee December 11, 1825. Died at home in Fidelity August 12, 83 years. When 3 years, came with parents to Illinois, settled near Jerseyville. Lived in county 80 years. Married Jane Davis March 30, 1854. Ten children, seven boys and three girls. Five of whom are still living. Douglas Moore of Springfield, Illinois, Robert and Charles of Fidelity, Mrs. Della Parsell, Eva Parsell both of Jerseyville. Mother of family died March 7, 1890. One surviving sister, Mrs. Martha Heffron who lives near Kane. She is now 85 years old. Mr. Moore remarried April 22, 1896 to Mrs. Margaret Hensinger who survives. Uncle Jimmy was one of the early pioneer settlers of Jersey County and at one time was probably the largest land owner in the county. He came to all of his possessions through that rugged toil which characterized the early settler of that day. ME Church at Fidelity. Leaves wife, three sons, two daughters, one sister. MOORE. Died 05-09-1973. Dated 9-6-73: Final services for Mrs. Jessie Moore, 80, of 1129 Wesley Avenue, Oak Park, will be held at 3:00 pm Monday, September 10, from Gubser Funeral Home with Rev. Preston Wood of Oak Park officiating. Her death occurred at 4 am September 5, at a hospital in Oak Park. Interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation will be held after 7 pm Saturday and on Sunday at Gubser Funeral Home. She was born May 13, 1893 in Jersey County, the daughter of Barber and Margaret Cunningham Nail. She is survived by one son, Edward, of Oak Park and a daughter, Mrs. Lee (Barbara Ann) Culver of Oak Park; two grandchildren; and one brother, Lee Nail of Jerseyville. Her husband was the late Laverne Moore.
MOORE. Died 12-08-1982. Dated 8-24-82: Private services for Joel Collins Moore, 71, of 1203 W. Exchange St., Jerseyville were conducted Monday afternoon at Gubser Funeral Home by the Rev. R. E. George. He died at approximately 11 am August 12 at John Cochran Veterans hospital in St. Louis after a lengthy illness. Moore retired in 1975 after serving as an x-ray technician for 21 years at Alton State hospital. He opened a shoe repair shop in Jerseyville which he operated until health forced his retirement in 1980. The World War II Army veteran was born July 20, 1911 in Alton, a son of the late Joel and Christina Belle Collins Moore. His survivors include his wife, Virginia Harp Moore whom he married June 15, 1975; one son, Richard of Pekin; two daughters, Donna Stoner and Joan Maher, Godfrey; two step sons, Charles Harp of Dow and Roger Harp of Ayers, Massachusetta; two step daughters, Annette Wells of Jerseyville and Jeanette Panzier of Fieldon; 11 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Paul of Godfrey and Mildred Stockton of Alton. The Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 conducted military rites at the graveside at Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey. The American Cancer society has been named as a memorial.
MOORE. Died 14-11-1985. Dated November, 1985: Lawrence Edward Moore, 85, of Jerseyville, died November 14 in Jerseyville. He was born August 11, 1900 in Jerseyville to Edward and Gertrude (House) Moore. He served in the Navy during World War II and was a retired building contractor. He married Goldie Long on December 29, 1952, in Carrollton. He was a member of the Jerseyville Moose Lodge and the American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Goldie, of Jerseyville, and sister Nadene Warner of Jerseyville. Visitation was November 15 at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville with the Rev. V. Clay Noah officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery with graveside military rites by the Jerseyville VFW Post No. 4528 and American Legion Post No. 492. A memorial has been established to the First Baptist church of Jerseyville.

MOORE. Dated November, 1987: Fidelity- Nora E. Moore, 85, died at 3:37 pm Thursday November 12, 1987 at St. Anthony’s hospital in Alton. She was born in Jerseyville, daughter of the late James E. and Ellen Long. Mrs. Moore had formerly worked as a cook for Southwestern High School in Piasa and Medora grade schools. She married Edward S. Moore on October 20, 1923, and he died July 26, 1985. Surviving are two sons; Steward Moore of Godfrey and Joe Moore of Brighton; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 pm Saturday at Targhetta Funeral Home in Medora at the Fidelity Baptist church, visitation will continue from noon Sunday until time of services at 2 pm. The Rev. Robert Quick will officiate. Burial will be at Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. The church has been designated for memorials.
MOORE. Died 09-02-1969. Dated 2-13-1969: Committal rites were held at Oak Grove cemeteryin Jerseyville, Wednesday, February 12 for Mrs. Reba Pointer Moore of 8311 Flora Ave., Venita Park, Missouri, whose death occurred February 9 at St. John Mercy hospital in St. Louis County. Arrangements were in charge of Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Final rites for Mrs. Moore, widow of Lester Maurice Moore, were held Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock at the Albert Hoppe Mortuary in St. Louis, with Rev. Paul Schlapabach officiating. Mrs. Moore had come to Jersey County the early part of last week to spend a few days at her farm east of Jerseyville. Enroute to Carlinville to visit her 87 year old mother, Mrs. Laura Pointer, the Missouri resident had stopped at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Craig for a short visit. While there she suffered a stroke. Mrs. Moore was admitted to the Jersey Community Hospital and on Saturday was transferred to St. John Mercy hospital where her death occurred the next day. Mrs. Moore was a daughter of Mrs. Laura Archer Pointer, and was born at Chesterfield on September 17, 1901. Her age at death was 67 years, 4 months and 23 days. Surviving Mrs. Moore are one daughter, Miss Maureen Moore of Venita Park; one son, Dennis Moore of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, her mother; six brothers, C. Elmo Pointer of Piasa, Ebert of Shipman, Vaughn of Carlinville, Lawson of Springfield, Stanley of Mendota and James of Chesterfield; and three sisters, Mrs. Hazel Calverd of Carlinville and Mrs. Velma Janes and Mrs. Denzel Meier of Decatur.
MOORE. Rose A. Moore, died at 12:38 am Saturday, September 2, 1989, at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville. Born in Fidelity, she was the daughterof the Late Oscar and Amelia (Uhlman) Wiegand. She and cecil Moore were married December 8, 1923. He died June 25, 1986. Surviving are two sons, Keith Moore of Jerseyville and Dale Moore of Medora; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a sister, Delia Powell of Alton; and a brother, Melvin Wiegand of Jerseyville. Preceding her in death were a great-granddaughter; a Sister, Gertrude Krug; two brothers, Albert and Kirk Wiegand. Visitation is 4-9 pm today and services 11 am Monday at Targhetta Funeral Home in Medora. The Revs. Earl Clagg and Martin Luebbert Jr. will officiate. Burial is in Maple Lawn cemetery, Medora. Memorials may be give to the cemetery fund.
MOORE. Jerseyville – Sylvia N. Moore, 94, died at 2 pm Tuesday May 9, 1989 at Jersey Community Hospital, Jerseyville. Mrs. Moore organized the Jersey County Home Bureau. Born in Fidelity, she was a daughter of the late William K. and Ida (McCollister) Dodge. She married William “Billie” M. Moore August 31, 1918. He died in July 1953. Surviving are three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A daughter, Ada Marie Maurer; and two brothers, Harold and Marcus Dodge, preceded her in death. Visitation is 11 am Friday until service time at 1 pm at Targhetta Funeral Home in Medora. The Rev. Dan Harry will officiate. Burial is in Medora cemetery. MOORE. Dated 12-16-86: Stella Moore, 57, of Godfrey died at 7:20 am Monday, December 15, 1986, at St. Anthony’s hospital in Alton after a lengthy illness. She was born in Jersey County, a daughter of the late Wiley and Stella (Frost) Johnson. On September 4, 1948, she married Stewart Moore, near Medora, and he survives. Mrs. Moore was a cook in the Alton public school system for 15 years, retiring in 1983. Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Sharon Beneze of Brighton; two sons, Steve Moore of Brighton and Scott Moore of Alton; two grandchildren; five sisters, Amanda Jane Bowker and Myrtle Fricker, both of Medora, Besta Burman of Salem, South Dakota, Mary A. Luce of Belvidere, Illinois, and Mildred A. Maple of Godfrey; and four brothers, Pearl Johnson and Wiley “Buck” Johnson, both of Jerseyville, Lawrence Johnson of Brighton and Charles Johnson of Carlinville. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 pm today at Warner-Targhetta Funeral Home in Medora. At Bethany Baptist church in Godfrey, visitation will be from noon Wednesday until service time at 2 pm with Rev. MOORE. Dated 9-29-86: Thelma I. Moore, 78, of Alton, died at 4:37 pm Saturday, September 27, 1986, at Alton Memorial hospital. She was born in Jersey County, a daugher of the late Clarence and Rhoda (Miller) Rowden. On November 5, 1927, in East Alton she married Oreland R. Moore, and he died February 13, 1981. Surviving are two sons; Bryon Moore of Godfrey and Charles Moore of Alton; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers, Frank and Harold Rowden, both of Godfrey, Stanley Rowden of Alton and Claude Rowden of Rosewood Heights; and four Sisters, Juanita Niemeyer of Grafton, Stella Yeakley of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Alice Crivello of Independence, Missouri and Bertha Seibert of Alton. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 amTuesday at Scenic Hill cemetery in Grafton with Rev. Orrin M. Anderson officiating. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association. MOREAN. Died 00-11-1889. Republican Examiner, November, 1889: Alexander B. Morean died at home of his son-in-law, George H. Morgan. Secretary of the Merchants Exchange in St. Louis. Mr. Morean came to Jersey in 1845 and remained until 1870, during which he did the most extensive business in the county. Merchandising under the style of Yates and Morean, J. C. Darby & Co., and J. N. Squire & Co. Milling in the firm of Morean & Squire, owned a large drug store, was engaged in banking and bought and sold a large per cent of the grain product of the county. Went to St. Louis into commission business, Morean & May. Then to New York into same business and at one time it was claimed he was the largest exporter of grain and flour in the US.

MORELAND. Died 05-01-1968. Dated 1-11-68: John Edgar Moreland, 82 year old retired duncan foundry employee, died Friday morning, January 5, at 6:05 o’clock at St. Anthony’s hospital in Alton where he had been a patient for two weeks. Mr. Moreland had resided on Route three, Jerseyville, the past sixteen years. Final rites were held Sunday afternoon, January 7, at 2 o’clock at the Otterville Baptist church with the pastor, Rev. Carl Skilbeck officiating. Burial was in the Noble cemetery. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Mr. Moreland was a son of the late Hazel and Rachael Vannort Moreland and was born in Jersey County December 27, 1885. His age at death was 82 years and 8 days. Surviving him are on sister, Mrs. Walter Smith, and one niece, Mrs. William Humphrey, both of Otterville.

MORGAN. Died 30-05-1975. Dated 6-5-75: George Olan Morgan, 73, owner and manager of the Morgan Hotel in Jerseyville, was pronounced dead on arrival at 2:30am on May 30 at Jersey Community Hospital. He was born November 12, 1901 in Plainville, a son of Fred O. and Maude Morgan. He was a graduate of the Payson High School and attended the University of Illinois for three years. Morgan was a member of the Presbyterian church, Masonic Lodge, Ainad Shriner Temple of East St. Louis, Tri County Shrine Club, and the Elks Lodge and Westlake Country Club, Jerseyville. The Morgans had lived at the hotel, 114 W. Arch St., for 30 years. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Gertrude Sims Morgan; and a brother, Fred O. Morgan of St. Louis. Final services were held June 1 at Jacoby Funeral Home with the Rev. R. E. George officiating. Masonic services were conducted at the Funeral Home. Interment was in the Kingston Cemetery, Barry.
MORGAN. Died 00-04-1982. Dated April, 1982: Gertrude S. Morgan, 81, operator of Morgan Realty firm died at 3 am today at her residence. She had owned and operated the Morgan Hotel from 1943 to 1976. Born in Barry, a daughter of the Late A. M. and Mary (Heinie) Sims, she married G. O. Morgan who died may 30, 1975. Surviving is a brother, John A. Sims of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Wednesday at Gubser Funeral Home, where the Jerseyville Order of Eastern Star, Lodge 656, will conduct a service at 7 pm. She was a 50 year member of the Plainview Order of Eastern Star. Funeral services will be held at 1 pm Thursday at the Funeral Home with the Revs. Simon A. Simon and R. E. George officiating, and burial will be in Kingston, Illinois cemetery. The First Presbyterian church of Jerseyville has been named as a memorial.
MORGAN. Died 00-08-1896. Jersey Republican August 6, 1896: Middie Fletcher Myric born at Fayetteville, North Carolina Chatam County, March 11, 1800 where she learned the hatters trade under care of her father. Married Joseph Morgan August 1821 at Fayetteville where they lived 7 years. Then to Georgia, afterwards to Kentucky and then to North Carolina. Came to Illinois in 1839 settling on Otter Creek. In 1840 they moved to Greene County, Missouri for four years. In 1851 moved to Clinton County, returning to Jersey in 1855. 10 children, 2 living. Daniel Morgan of Augusta Kansas, and Louisa Claridge of Grafton. Belonged to Antioch Baptist church. She was requested to name the church and chose Antioch; that was the first church she joined in North Carolina. Lived with daughter, Mrs. Louisa Claridge until 1859 when she went to live with son Daniel. In 1886 she returned to her daughter. 42 grandchildren, 97 great grandchildren and 9 great, great grandchildren. Funeral from Otterville Baptist church. Rev. S. Catt. Elders Dodson and Teany. Buried Otterville cemetery beside her husband. Died at Rosedale, Illinois 96 years old.
MORGAN. Dated 7/31/88: Russell Morgan, 2 year old son of Paul and Katherine (Frank) Morgan of Yuma, Arizona, formerly of Jersey County, died in a drowning incident Thursday, July 28, 1988. He was pronounced dead at 8:28 pm at Yuma Regional Medical Center. He was born in Arizona and in addition to his parents, is survived by a sister, Jessica Lynn Morgan at home; and grandparents, George and Minnie Frank of Godfrey and Verna M. Morgan of Grafton. Arrangements are pending at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
MORGAN. Died 24-09-1981. Dated September,1981: Services for Russell J. Morgan, a retired farmer of R. 1, Grafton, were conducted from Gubser Funeral Home Saturday morning by the Rev. Paul Snow of Grafton. Interment was in Noble cemetery, Otterville. He died at 5:08 am September 24 at Jersey Community Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born March 23, 1910 in Otter Creek township, he was the son of the late William R. and Alfreda Kirchner Morgan. His survivors are his wife, the former Verna Gowin; six sons, Donald R. of Vancouver, Washington, Stanley, Bunker Hill, Richard, Dow, Clyde, Brighton, James and Paul, both of Grafton; three daughters, Betty Lueker of South Roxana, Mrs. Clark (Margie) Watson, Grafton, and Debbie Cooperider of Wood River; 18 grand children and a great-granddaughter. An infant son preceded him in death. The intensive care unit of Jersey Community Hospital has been named as a memorial.
MORGAN. Died 19-11-1964. Dated 12-3-64: Funeral services for William Russell Morgan of Milton, a former resident of Jersey County, were held on Saturday afternoon November 21 at one o’clock at the Hanks Funeral Home in Pearl with Brother Lowell Manchester of the Church of Christ officiating assisted by Brother Jungens. Burial was in the Noble cemetery at Otterville. The death of Mr. Morgan occurred at the Illini Hospital in Pittsfield on November 19. He had suffered several heart attacks. The decedent, a son of James and Sarah Morgan, was born in Iowa May 18, 1887. He was married to Frieda Kirchner and the couple had one son, Russell. Following the death of his wife Mr. Morgan was married on November 15, 1947 to Margaret Becker Faber. Mr. Morgan spent most of his life in Jersey and Calhoun counties and was engaged in farming for many years. He had retired from employment at the western. He and his wife had resided on a farm near Medora before moving to Milton in October 1961. Mr. Morgan was a member of the First Baptist church in Jerseyville. Surviving him are his wife, one son, Russell Morgan of Grafton, two step daughters, Mrs. Home Lane of Milton and Mrs. Henry Parker of Godfrey, a step-son, Harry Faber of Inglewood, California, twenty grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Les (Edna) Gunterman of Jerseyville. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother. Among those from this area attending the final rites were Mr. and Mrs. Russell Morgan and family and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd McIntyre of Grafton; Mr. and Mrs. Lester Gunterman, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Hirst and family, Mrs. and Mrs. Leslie Smith and family, Mr. and Mrs. Loren Smith and family and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Mcleod of Jerseyville; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mckinney and Mr. and Mrs. William Pope and daughters of Medora.
MORAIN. Undated newspaper clipping: James Morain, 80, who had operated a fish market at Columbiana for fifty years, died Tuesday In a Peoria hospital, where he was taken two weeks or more ago. The body was taken to Kampsville where funeral services were held yesterday afternoon. Burial was in the Dayton cemetery. Mr. Morain is survived by two daughters and two sons; Mrs. Elsie Pryor of Eldred, Mrs. Elvira Bartholomew and Ira Morain of Peoria, and Harry Morain of Kampsville. He was a colorful figure at his fish boat in Columbiana, and was well known in this part of the state.

MORRIS. Bernard “Rusty” Morris, 57, died at 11:55 am Thursday, January 10, 1991 at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. Morris retired in 1988, after 30 years of service as an assembler, at General Motors plant in Wentzville, Missouri. He was a noted area photographer with pictures in the Jersey County Courthouse and City hall, Jerseyville Library and Grafton City Hall, and was a US Navy Korean war veteran. Born in Arkansas, he was the son of the Late Robert Earl and Ada Belle (Ennis) Morris. He married the former Marjorie Gaither Tash on February 14, 1986, in Jerseyville, and she survives. Also surviving are a son, Ricky Wayne Morris at home; two stepsons, Phillip Tash of Bethalto and Mark Tash at home; two step daughters, Linda K. Whitley and Suzy Jones, both of Jerseyville; six step grandchildren; a step great granddaughter; a brother, Delton “Bud” Morris of Jerseyville and three Sisters, Joan Neal of St. Louis, Betty Harshbarger of Cottage Hills and Rosemary Knight of Grafton. Visitation is from 4 to 7 pm, Saturday at Jacoby-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are a 1 pm Sunday. Burial is in Meadow Branch cemetery near Pere Marquette State Park.
MORRIS. Died 06-07-1977. Dated 7-11-77: Cassandra Jean Morris, 13, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Delton G. Morris of 809 N. Giddings, Jerseyville, was pronounced dead on arrival at Jersey Community Hospital 10:45 pm on July 6 after she was thrown from a motorcycle. The accident occurred on West Fairgrounds Avenue. She was born October 6, 1963 in Jerseyville, the daughter of Delton G. and Norma Jean Brown Morris and was a student at Illini Junior High. Besides her parents she is survived by a sister, Gwen Marie Morris, at home; three half brothers, Edward, Dennis, and Gregory Morris of Wood River; three half sisters, Patricia Morris, Wood River; Laura Eippert and Mrs. Edison (Christine) Abbott of Alton; and maternal grandmother, Mrs. Laura Coombs, Pleasant Hill. The funeral was held Saturday morning, July 9, at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home with the Rev. Lawrence Rowland officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.
MORRIS. Freda Morris, 89, of Wood River, died at 6:25 pm Saturday Dec. 10, 1988 at Edwardsville Care Center east. She worked in the milling department of Olin Corp. at East Alton before retiring. Born in Jersey County, her parents were the late John and Eliza (Haller) Isringhausen. On July 28, 1928, she married Orsa Morris in Wood River. He survives. Also surviving are two sons, Lamar Mc Cormick of Roxana and Richard Morris of Wood River; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and a sister, Tess Ashlock of Wood River. Visitation begins at 4 pm today at Marks Mortuary in Wood River, where services will be conducted 11 am Tuesday by the Rev. Harris Schultz. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Park at Godfrey.
MORRIS. Died 19-11-1975. Dated 11-27-75: The funeral of Mrs. Pearl E. Morris, 87, of 208 S. Lafayette st., Jerseyville was held on November 22 at the Gubser Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry F. Palmer of the Church of Christ, Dunmor, Kentucky. officiating. Interment was in the Kane cemetery. Her death occurred at 10:45 pm on November 19 at Jersey County convalescent Care Center. She was born on December 27, 1887 in Greene County, a daughter of the late Charles and Matilda Scoggins Hardwick. Her husband, Pleasant H. Morris, died in January, 1962. Her survivors are one son, Harmon W. Morris of Jerseyville; and daughters, Mrs. Fred (Goldie) Atchison and Mrs. Freeland (Helen) Blasa, Jerseyville, Mrs. Paul (Mable) Grizzle of Carrollton and Mrs. Lloyd (Dimple) Anderson of Kane; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. Her parents, three sons, two daughters, three brothers and a sister preceded her in death. The family designated the Jersey County heart fund as a memorial.
MORRISON. Died 00-10-1971. Dated 10-14-71: funeral services were held at one o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the Staten Funeral Home in Alton for Mrs. Edyth D. Morrison, a former resident of Grafton. Rev. Paul S. Krebs officiated and burial was in the Upper Alton cemetery. The Catholic children’s home on State Street in Alton was designated as a memorial. Of late years, Mrs. Morrison had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Homer (Irene) Jockisch in Shipman, and her death occurred Sunday at the Lakeview Nursing Home in Carlinville. Mrs. Morrison was born in Griggsville, Illinois but had lived in this area the greater part of her life. For ten years she operated the Edyth Morrison restaurant in Grafton. She retired ten years ago. In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Morrison is survived by four grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Her husband, Walter, died in 1935.

Wilson of Calhoun County After which remains taken to Gunterman cemetery. Ella king born in Rome, New York. Parents were Rev. Geo. I. King and Mrs. King. Moved to Quincy, Illinois for 13 years. Moved to Jerseyville until he died in 1873. Ella married to J. Knox Smith of Lincoln, four children. Three survive, Mrs. Geo. O. Smith of Lincoln, Mrs. J. Woodward Jones of Wayne, Mr. Wilford Knox Smith of Crete, all living in Nebraska. J. K. Smith died in 1882 and Mrs. Smith and children to Lincoln Nebraska. In 1889 she married John G. Morrison formerly of Jerseyville. They made their home in Nebraska. One daughter, Miss Ella K., son died in infancy. Also mother to her husbands daughter, Estelle R. Morrison and son Edward R. Morrison, children of his first wife who was Mary Rees. Presbyterian church, Mrs. Morrison was member of giving it her time and money. She and her mother were, with exception of one other person, the largest contributors to the erection of their church in Jerseyville.
MORRISON. George Bert Morrison, 81, died at 11:24 am Monday, April 22, 1991 at Hamilton Memorial hospital in Mcleansboro. He was a retired farmer. Born in Fieldon on September 25, 1909 he was the son of the late George H. and Tillie (Andris) Morrison. He married the former Vivian M. Willis on November 26, 1954 in Hernando, Miss. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Charlene Pohlman of Granite City; two grandchildren; two great-grand children; and a Sister, Lida Medford of Fieldon. Preceding him in death were a son, dennis Morrison; and two brothers, Sylvester and Lawrence Morrison. Visitation is from 4 to 9 pm Wednesday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are at 10 am Thursday. The Rev. Rick Francis will officiate. Burial is in Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be made to the United Church of Christ of Fieldon, where he was a member.
MORRISON. Undated article, Lawrence Morrison ?: He was born September 6, 1906, in Jersey County to the late George and Tillie (Andrus) Morrison. He married Marjorie Harmon on February 16, 1935 in Marion. He was a farmer and a member of the Fieldon United Church of Christ. He served on Community Unit No. 100 school board from 1948 to 1954 and on the Farm Bureau Board, Nutwood Drainage and Levee District and Farmers Livestock Association. He was a trustee of Gunterman cemetery, Noble of Illini Shriners (Ainad Temple) and a past master of Fieldon Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie of Fieldon; Sons Gary of Fieldon and George of Taylorville; daughters Janet Gilworth and Connie Parsell both of Jerseyville, Karen Heitzig of Alton, Barbara Scott of Kirkwood, Missouri, Carol Vogel of Creve Coeur, Missouri, Beverly Phillips of Godfrey and Patricia Morrison of Florissant, Missouri; brother Bert Morrison of Jerseyville; sister, Lida Medford of Fieldon; 19 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a granddaughter. Visitation and Masonic services were June 11 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The funeral was June 12 there with the Rev. Jean Erb officiating. Burial was in Gunterman cemetery. Memorials have been established to Fieldon United Church of Christ, Shriners Children’s Hospital and Jersey Community hospital.

He was born November 23, 1900 in Jersey County, a son of George H. and Tillie Andres Morrison, and was a retired painter. Surviving are three children, Mrs. Charlene Morgan, Jerseyville, Mrs. Roland (Esther) Turner, Jacksonville and Roger Leslie Morrison, Roodhouse; two brothers and a sister, Lawrence F. Morrison and Mrs. Lida Medford of Fieldon and Bertram Morrison of Missouri; six grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 pm and from 7 to 9 pm Tuesday, November 30 at Gubser Funeral Home. The family has designated the American Cancer society as a memorial.

Dated 4/14/66: Mrs. Tillie Andris Morrison of Fieldon died at seven-thirty o’clock Monday morning at Waters Nursing Home in Jerseyville where she had been a patient the past five days. Friends may call a Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2 o’clock this (Thursday) afternoon at the United Church of Christ in Fieldon. Rev. Leonard Todd, former pastor of the church, will officiate and burial will be in Gunterman cemetery. Mrs. Morrison, a lifelong resident of Jersey County, was born January 30, 1879, a daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine Bernius Andris. Her husband, George H. Morrison, preceded her in death. Surviving Mrs. Morrison are three sons, Sylvester of Jerseyville, and Lawrence and Bert of Fieldon; one daughter, Mrs. Herschel (Lida) Medford of Fieldon; thirteen grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Emma Antrae of Jerseyville and Mrs. Bertha Sprich of Alton. Preceding her in death in addition to her husband were her parents, three brothers and one sister.

MORROW. Born 14-04-1930, died 24-01-1987. Rev. Patrick A. Morrow, 56, pastor of St. Francis Xavier Catholic church was pronounced dead at 4:10 pm Saturday, January 24, 1987, at his residence, of an apparent heart attack. Morrow was ordained a Roman Catholic priest of the Springfield diocese on may 28, 1955, in Springfield. He served as the assistant pastor at Sacred Heart Church in Livingston in 1955; St. Mary’s in Pittsfield in 1957; St. Bernard’s of Wood River in 1961; St. Mary’s of Taylorville in 1965; and St. Ambrose in Godfrey in 1966. Morrow then became pastor of St. Patricks Catholic church in Grafton in 1969 and served St. Francis Xavier church in Jerseyville from 1977 until the present time. He was born in Beaghmore, Carrigallean, County Leitrim, Ireland, the son of Mary (McGovern) Morrow of Dublin, Ireland, and the late Patrick Morrow. In addition to his mother, surviving are a Brother, Michael J. Morrow of Birmingham, England; and three sisters, Maureen Rocks of Suffren, New York, Madge Kinahan of Dublin, Ireland, and Adeline Jones of Devon, England. Visitation is scheduled to begin at 3 pm Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier church in Jerseyville and will continue with a vigil through the night. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 am Wednesday at St. Francis church. Burial will be in St. Francis cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. Francis church or school. MORTLAND. Jerseyville – Linda Yvonne Mortland, 40, died at 4:15 am Saturday, December 23, 1989 at Barnes hospital, St. Louis after a lengthy illness. She had been a nurses aide at Greenwood Manor Nursing Home and Garnet’s Chateau, both in Jerseyville. Born in Hardin, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Rosie Ellen (Triplett) Follis. Surviving are two brothers, Robert H. Follis of Cottage Hills and Floyd L. Follis of Fieldon; five Sisters, Virginia R. Weeks of Tucson, Arizona, Shirley J. Smith of Batchtown, Carol A. Hutchinson of Lawrence, Kansas., and Edna M. and Alice A. Schaaf, both of Fieldon; and Vincent E. Lehr of Jerseyville. Visitation is from 4 to 9 pm today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are at 1 pm Thursday with the Rev. William Hembrow officiating. MOSES. Died 18-01-1978. Services for Charles Wesley Moses, 49, of 108 N. Liberty, Jerseyville will be held at 2 pm on January 21 at the First Baptist church in Jerseyville with the Rev. Everett Chambers officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. He died unexpectedly at 12:30 pm on January 18 at Jersey Community Hospital. Moses was a sergeant on the Jerseyville police force, due to retire January 29 after 26 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist church, Illinois Police Association and was a veteran of the US Air Force, serving from April 10, 1946 to March 25, 1949. He was born in Jersey County January 29, 1928, a son of Sylvester Leroy and Wyona Frelove Edsall Moses. He is survived by his wife, the former Barbara Ann Adams whom he married June 3, 1956; one daughter, Lisa, at home; a sister, Mary Moses of Jerseyville; and one brother, Darrell Moses of East Alton. Visitation will be held after 4 pm Friday at Gubser Funeral Home until noon Saturday When the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until time of services. Dated 10-26-1967: Leroy Moses, publisher of the Booster in Jerseyville, died at one-thirty o’clock Tuesday afternoon, October 24, at the Jersey Community Hospital where he had been a medical patient for over a week. Visitation hours will be held at the Gubser Funeral Home after one-thirty o’clock this (Thursday) afternoon until noon Friday, then at the First Baptist church where services are to be held at two o’clock with the Rev. Carlton Christenson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. The building fund of the First Baptist church has been designated as memorial by the family of Mr. Moses. Mr. Moses, a son of the late Samuel and Eliza Pinegar Moses, was born in Fieldon, October 30, 1891, and would have been seventy-six years old on Monday. He had made his home in Jerseyville since 1910. For a number of years he was employed in the local newspaper plant which published the former Jersey County News. He later started a small shop at his residence property at 506 E. Exchange Street. He had been publishing the Booster, a shopper, and operating a job shop for thirty-nine years. At the time of death, Mr. Moses was deacon emeritus of the First Baptist church and was member of the town board of auditors of Jersey township. He served with the military forces during World War I and was a Justice of Peace in Jersey township for eight to ten years. Surviving Mr. Moses are his wife, Mrs. Frelove Moses; two sons, Darrell Moses of East Alton and Sergeant Charles Moses of the local city police force; one daughter, Mary A. Moses who resides at home; and four grandchildren.

She was born in Otterville June 2, 1893, the daughter of the Richard and Millie Vanausdoll Edsall. She was married to Leroy Moses, who died October 24, 1967. Survivors include one daughter, Mary A. Moses of Jerseyville; two sons, Charles W. Moses of Jerseyville and Darrell Moses of East Alton; one Brother Allen Edsall of Warren, Michigan, and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Gubser Funeral Home at 2 pm March 29 with the Rev. Everett Chambers officiating. MOSS. Jersey Republican February 25, 1904: James F. Moss born near Mt. Vernon, Illinois February 12, 1825 and died February 13, 1904. Married Martha Ann Brock July 27, 1846. Nine Children. J. C. Moss of Oklahoma, and Thad Spaulding of Dow, Illinois survive. Moved to Jersey County October 9, 1849 and lived in Grafton that winter and on March 12, 1850 moved to the place where he lived until death. His wife died January 2, 1864 and on July 27, 1865 married Lucinda C. Slaten. Six children: Mrs. C. W. McDow, Nettie D. Harmon, W. and Carrie are still living. He was converted at a camp meeting in Washington County, Illinois in 1845. Ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren. One half brother, Lewis Moss of Ashley, Illinois. One brother, Capt. John R. Moss and sister, Mrs. J. C. Maxey both of Mt. Vernon, Illinois.

Prairie, Jerseyville with the Revs. Louis Schlangen and Patrick Morrow as concelebrants. He died at 8:54 am December 19 at Jersey Community Hospital. He was born in Calhoun County a son of the late Francis and Anna Kamp Mossman and married the former Louise Telkamp who died in 1979. He is survived by five daughters, Leola Held and Doris Tepen of Brussels, Lois Kiel of Meppen, Marietta Bates of Dow and Jean Rowling of Grafton; three Sons, Paul of Sullivan, Richard of Jerseyville and Leland of Grand Island, Nebraska. 35 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Clara Narup of Alton and Marie Kiel of Jerseyville; and a brother Clarence, of Godfrey. St. Francis Xavier school in Jerseyville and St. Mary’s school in Brussels have been designated as the memorials. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mossman whom she married January 22, 1919; five Daughters, Leola Held and Doris Tepen, Brussels, Lois Kiel, Meppen, Marietta Bates, Dow, Jean Rowlings, Grafton; three sons, Paul, Sullivan, Illinois, Richard, Jerseyville, Leland , Grand Island, Nebraska; 35 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren. One son, Carl, Jr. preceded her in death. Visitation after 2 Monday at Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin where the rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm. MOTSINGER. Died 23-04-1983. Dated 5-3-1983: Earl Motsinger, 69, of 305 Mcgill, Jerseyville died at 1 am April 23 at Jewish hospital in St. Louis. The retired farm laborer was born July 24, 1913 in Moark, Arkansas, a son of William L. and Martha A. Edwards Motsinger. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Bridges Smith Motsinger whom he married January 11, 1969; a daughter, Dorothy Henderson of Strongsville, Ohio; two step daughters, Debbie Charow and Shari Smith, Jerseyville; a step son, James Smith of Godfrey; one foster son, Cote of Warren, Michigan; five grandchildren; one brother, Ernest, Sarasota, Florida. He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers. Services were held at Gubser Funeral Home with the Rev. V. C. Noah Jr. officiating. Burial was in Jalappa cemetery in the Kane vicinity.

Born in Kane, a daughter of Virgie Coats of East Alton and the late Earl Cox, she married John L. Mott on June 14,1956 in Jerseyville, and he survives. In addition to her husband and mother, surviving are three Daughters, Wanda Burgess of East Alton, Diane Phillips of Brighton and Sandra Agney of Cottage Hills; six Sons, Wesley of East Alton, Ricky, Dennis, and Randy, all of Dow; and Kevin and Terry, both of Cottage Hills; 14 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; three sisters, Shirley Kirschner of St. Louis, Virginia McCollum of Advance, Missouri. And Connie Dorsey of East Alton; and eight Brothers, Don Cox of Advance, Missouri, Bill and Jackie Cox, both of Godfrey, Jerry and Dennis Cox, both of Alton, Robert and Darrel Cox, both of East Alton, and Richard Cox of Elsah. MOTT. Died 26-12-1964. Dated 12-31-64: Clifford Mott, retired bank employee died. Clifford Mott, a retired bank employee, died at four-forty o’clock Saturday morning at the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Quincy where he had resided the past two years. A former resident of Dow, Mott had been employed in St. Louis for years before his retirement. The body was brought to Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where funeral services were held at one-thirty o’clock Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Kenneth Taylor of Grafton officiated and burial was in the Elsah cemetery. Mr. Mott was born in St. Louis, December 26, 1893, and his death occurred on his seventy first birthday anniversary. His parents were the late Clifford L. and Louise M. McDow Mott. Surviving him are an uncle, Homer McDow of Dow; an aunt, Mrs. Walter Spaulding of Jerseyville; and cousins. His parents and one brother, William, preceded him in death. The deceased was a member of the AF & AM Lodge in St. Louis.
MOTT. Dow – John Laverne Mott, 54, formerly of East Alton, died at 3:34 pm Thursday, May 24, 1990, at St. Anthony’s hospital in Alton, after a lengthy illness. Mott, a US Marine Korean war veteran, retired in 1984 as a melter for Laclede Steel Co. of Alton, after 21 years of service. He was born in Newbern, son of Eileen (Keyes) Rodgers of Godfrey and the late Laverne Mott. On June 14, 1956, he married the former Betty J. Cox. She died on October 12, 1984. Surviving are his mother; three daughters, Wanda Burgess and Sandy Agney, both of East Alton, and Diane Phillips of Meadowbrook; six Sons, Rick Mott of Dow, Terry Mott of Wilsonville and Gene Smith and Kevin, Benny, and Randy Mott, all of East Alton; 22 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Paul Mott of the state of Washington. Visitation is from 5 to 9 pm Monday with services at 1 pm Tuesday at Gray Funeral Home in Wood River. The Rev. Dean Cox will officiate. Military graveside rites will be conducted at Woodland Hill cemetery in East Alton by Cottage Hills Post 7678 and Alton VFW Post 1308.
MOTT. Died 09-11-1950. Dated November, 1950: Funeral services for John Perry Mott, seventy-nine year old resident of Dow, were held Saturday afternoon, November 11, at two o’clock at the Newbern church in Newbern with the Rev. M. Edwards Breed, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Jerseyville officiating. Internment was in the Newbern cemetery. Mr. Mott was found dead in his home in Dow Thursday morning, November 9, about nine-thirty by Lawrence Darr of Dow who had stopped to try to buy some popcorn from the aged man. Mott was sitting in a chair in his home. An inquest was conducted Friday evening by Coroner Rodney Jacoby and death was attributed to coronary thrombosis. Lamoine Mott of Dow, a distant relative of Mr. Mott, testified he had been with the aged man until about 10:30 o’clock Wednesday evening. He was found dead in the same chair in which he was sitting when Lamoine Mott left him. His death was believed to have occurred about 11:30 o’clock Wednesday night. The decedent was the son of the late John m., and Minerva Lurton Mott and was born in Jersey County on December 8, 1870. His age at time of death was seventy-nine years and eleven days. As a young man Mr. Mott engaged in the stone mason trade and followed this line of work up until the time of his death. At the time he was fatally stricken he had under construction a brick home for supervisor Albert Gisy of Mississippi township. Most of his stone masonry work was done in Jersey and Madison counties and he had worked on some of the business buildings in Jerseyville. Surviving Mr. Mott is one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Parsell of Dow, and three sisters, Miss Lula B. Mott of Pasadena, California, Mrs. Effie Kelly of Ocean Park, California, and Mrs. Ada Richards of Los Angeles, California, and three grandchildren.
MOTT. Undated: Lamoine Mott, a brother of Late B. L. Mott and 20 years his junior, left Jersey County when 16 years and settled in Des Moines, Iowa where he resided at the time of his death which occurred in San Diego, California Dec. 24. Leaves widow and three sons and on daughter.

Mott of Pasadena, California Which occurred in a Pasadena hospital on December 12. Miss Mott was a daughter of the late John P. Mott and Minerva Lurton Mott and was born and reared at Dow. She had been a resident of California For the past forty years with the exception of a few years when she returned to Jersey County and resided with the late Mrs. Nola Darlington. Miss Mott is survived by one sister, Mrs. Effie C. Kelley of Ocean Park, California, three nieces, Mrs. Margaret Parsell of Springfield, formerly of Dow, Mrs. Edrie Alger of Ocean Park and Mrs. Julia Morris of Calimesa, California and one nephew, Lavern Mott of Dow. She was a cousin of the Marion Lurton of Dow. Funeral services were held Thursday, December 15, at one o’clock pm at Lamb Funeral Home in Pasadena with Dr. J. Henry Hutchins officiating. Entombment was in Woodlawn Mausoleum, Santa Monica, California.

Mrs. Mott of Dow died in hospital: Mrs. Louise Matilda Mott, one of the older residents of Dow, died at one-fifteen o’clock Tuesday morning, January 31, at the Memorial hospital in Alton where she had been a patient for the past eight weeks. Mrs. Mott was born in Jersey County, June 26, 1868, a daughter of the late John Newton and Mary Elizabeth Harris McDow. Her age at the time of death was eighty-one years, seven months and five days. The deceased is survived by one Son, Clifford Lamoine Mott of Dow; one sister, Mrs. Walter M. Spaulding of Dow; two brothers, Burt E. McDow of East St. Louis and Homer L. McDow of Dow. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home Thursday afternoon, February 2, at 2 o’clock. The Rev. Edward E. Souders of Grafton officiated and interment was in the Valhalla Memorial Park.

The death of Mrs. Mottaz, widow of Dr. W. L. Mottaz, occurred at three-thirty o’clock Friday afternoon at the Jersey Community Hospital. She was born in Euclid, Minnesota, September 23, 1883 a daughter of the late Alvin and Minnie Lippe Hempstead. Her survivors are one son, Paul H. Mottaz of Jerseyville and three grandchildren.
MOTTAZ. Paul H. Mottaz, 71, died at 2:12 pm Thursday, November 28, 1991, at Jersey Community hospital in Jerseyville. A US Navy World War II veteran, Mottaz retired in 1983 as a switchman from General Telephone Co., after 37 years of service, and was a volunteer at Jersey Community hospital. Born in Jerseyville on February 20, 1920, he was the son of the late William L. and May (Hempstead) Mottaz. He married the former Tessie Hetzel on November 15, 1941, in St. Charles, Missouri and she survives. Also surviving are a son, Lonnie Mottaz of Jerseyville; two daughters, Debbie Parker of Wood River and Deanna Gowin of Marietta, Georgia; and three grandchildren. Visitation is from 4 to 8 pm Sunday at Jacoby-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Services are at 10 am Monday at the First Assembly of God church in Jerseyville, with the Rev. Larry Hayes officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted at Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville by Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 and VFW Post 4528. MOTTER. Telegraph dated 2-7-1986: Fieldon – Edward W. Motter, 81, died at 2:10 pm Thursday, February 6, 1986, at Christian hospital northeast in St. Louis County. Born in Chicago, son of the late Edward and Mary (Coleson) Motter, he married the former Charlotte “Lottie” Rosenthal on May 4, 1928, in Chicago. He owned and operated a grocery store in Fieldon for 25 years. Surviving are his wife; one son, Frank of Fieldon; two Daughters, Jean Schmieder of Jerseyville and Mary Fackler of Elsah; one sister, Dorothy Ponstein of Downers Grove; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 3 pm Sunday at Fieldon United Church of Christ with the Rev. Jean Erb officiating. Memorials may be given to the church or the American Diabetes Association. Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home of Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements. The body was donated to Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

He was born in Chicago on July 3, 1933, the son of Charlotte Motter and the late Edward Motter. He was employed at Olin Corp. In East Alton. His survivors are one Daughter, Lura Vanausdoll of Jerseyville, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren; one brother, Melvin Mourning of Sun City, Arizona; five sisters, Viola Gier of Santa Barbara, California, Nettie Branham of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Imogene Houseman, Florence Waters and Hazel Davis, all of Jerseyville. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary seal, who died on January 25. The state Street Baptist church has been named as a memorial.

She was born January 23, 1883 in Kane, to the late James and Rusha Willis Wilson and was married to Harvey Mourning. She was a member of the southern Baptist church. Only cousins survive. Services were conducted Friday at the first souther Baptist church in Alton by the Rev. Howard Todd Taylor. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.

Nine brothers, four of whom survive Her. J. L.,W. B., Doug and George Seago. Leaves husband J. R. Mourning and 7 children, two children having preceded her to the future world. December 7, 1865 she married Daniel S. Keeley who died February 10, 1872. Five children, four Living: C. T. Keeley, Mrs. T. D. Mourning, Mrs. Lottie B. Allen, and Mrs. J. C. Carrico. In jun, 1879 Mrs. Keeley married to J. R. Mourning. Four Children: Eddie, Ollie, Harven, and Verna. Verna died March 17, 1900. For six years Mrs. Mourning has been matron of Jersey County Poor Farm. MOURNING. Evelyn Marie Mourning, 63, died unexpectedly at 6:35 am Friday February 15, 1991 at home. She owned and operated Evelyn’s Child Care in Jerseyville. Born in Granite City, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Mabel (Schwendemann) Tucker. She married Delbert Mourning in Jerseyville on July 25, 1945 and he survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Melody Muntz and Terri Phelps, both of Jerseyville; four sons, David, Scott and Jay Mourning, all of Jerseyville, and Bruce W. Mourning of Rosewood Heights; 13 grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Arnold of Florissant, Missouri. He was a son of the late Thomas and Jennie Keeley Mourning and was born in Jersey County January 10, 1895. His age at death was 72 years, 5 months and 25 days. Mr. Mourning was employed as a salesman in Atlanta, Georgia, for many years and when he and Mrs. Mourning returned to Jerseyville about nine years ago to make their home, he became associated with the Mourning Realty Company as salesman. Surviving Mr. Mourning are his wife, Mrs. Lavina Mourning of this city, four brothers, Charles and Lester of Jerseyville and Howard and Melvin Mourning of Wood River, eight sisters, Mrs. Lovie Fritz, Mrs. Florence Waters, Mrs. Imogene Houseman, Mrs. August Egelhoff and Miss Ruth Mourning of Jerseyville, Mrs. Viola Gier of Santa Barbara, California, Mrs. Nettie Brannan of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Mrs. Maynard Sparlin of Greenville, two grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Virgil, who lost his life in a plane accident in May, 1962.

Mr. Mourning had been engaged in the real estate business in Jerseyville for the past twenty five years. His earlier businesses here were a movie theatre and farm implement firm, and he had also engaged in farming. In addition to his church and lodge affiliations, Mr. Mourning was a charter member of the Jersey County Farm Bureau and a member of Jerseyville Chapter No. 656, Order of Eastern Star. He was one of nineteen children born to the late Thomas D. and Mary Jane Keely Mourning. He was born in Jersey County January 30, 1889 and his age at death was 80 years, 4 months and 15 days. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Hattie Mackelden Mourning, two sons, Hubert of Kane and C. Delbert of Jerseyville; three daughters, Mrs. Eldon (Juanita) Stone of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Mrs. Louis (Vera) Crist of Shipman and Mrs. Virgil (Ada) Myers of Jerseyville; three Brothers, Lester Mourning of Jerseyville, Melvin Mourning of Bethalto, and Howard Mourning of Wood River; eight sisters, Mrs. William Fritz, Mrs. Florence Waters, Mrs. Imogene Houseman, Mrs. Hazel Egelhoff and Miss Ruth Mourning of Jerseyville, Mrs. Nettie Brannan of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Mrs. Viola Gier of Santa Barbara, California, and Mrs. Mayard Sparlin of Greenville. Visitation will be 4-9 pm Thursday at Elias-Smith Funeral Home in Godfrey, where services will be conducted 1 pm Friday by the Rev. I. T. Beard. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Jersey County News, Thursday, January 13, 1927: Mrs. George Mowen: funeral services were held in Centralia on Sunday afternoon for Mrs. George Mowen, who died at her home there on Thursday, January 6, at the age of 50 years. The deceased formerly lived here and before her marriage was Miss Allie Dare. She is a sister of Mrs. Milas Woolsey, a half sister of William Monk and sister-in-law of Cyrus, Walter, and Fred Mowen, all of Jerseyville. Among those from here who went to Centralia to attend the funeral were Cyrus and Fred Mowen, William Monk, Lester and Mrs. Walter Mowen and daughter, Miss Lelia.

Dated 4/12/56: Mrs. Anna Marie Mowen of Route 2, Jerseyville, wife of Preston Mowen, died at twelve fifteen o’clock Monday morning April 9, at Barnes hospital in St. Louis where she had been a patient for three days. Prior to being moved to St. Louis, Mrs. Mowen had been a patient at the Jersey Community Hospital and a Memorial hospital in Alton. Mrs. Mowen was born in Greene County, May 16, 1905 and her age at the time of death was fifty years, ten months and twenty-three days. In addition to her husband, the decedent is survived by one son, Robert. P. Mowen of Jerseyville; her mother, Mrs. Hattie Bean of Alton; two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Breitweiser of Delhi, and Mrs. Roberta Guilander of Kane; and one brother, Hubert Bean of Jerseyville. One daughter, Lois, died in infancy. Mrs. Mowen was a member of the Bethany Baptist church and the Demolay Mothers Circle. The body was moved from Jacoby Brothers to the Mowen home where friends called until the time of the funeral. Services were held at the First Baptist church in this city at two o’clock Wednesday afternoon, April 11. The Rev. Carl A. Moman of Jerseyville and Rev. William Sealock of Winchester officiated and interment was in the Grimes cemetery.

MOWEN. Jerseyville – Eunice L. Mowen, 77, died at 8 am Saturday, January 13, 1990 at Ann’s Shelter Care, Jerseyville. She was a schoolteacher with District 100 for more than 33 years, retiring in 1962. Born in Jersey County, she was the daughter of the Late Herman C. and Nena (Landon) Kirchner. On December 29, 1939, in Troy, Missouri, she married George H. Houseman. He died in July 1951. She later married Preston Mowen on August 10, 1960, in Waterloo. He died on July 26, 1984. Surviving are a Daughter, Juanetta Powers of Jerseyville; a stepson, Robert Mowen of Jerseyville; a grandson; two step grandchildren; and a nephew whom she raised, Darrell Kirchner of Jacksonville, Texas. Preceding her in death were a Brother, Hubert Kirchner; and a sister, Melva Oliphint. Visitation is from 4 to 8 pm Monday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, with an Order of the Eastern Star service at 7 pm by Jerseyville Lodge 656. Funeral services are a 1:30 pm Tuesday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville with the Rev. Walter C. Burk officiating. Burial is in Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. MOWEN. Died 25-06-1953. Dated 7/2/1953: Fred P. Mowen, well-known retired Jersey County farmer, was found dead at the wheel of his car in English township about 5 o’clock Thursday afternoon, June 25, by his great nephew, Robert Mowen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Preston Mowen. Young Mowen was enroute to the home of his parents from another farm when he saw the automobile in the Clarence Weighard bean field northwest of Jerseyville. Recognizing the car as that of his great uncle, he investigated and found Mr. Mowen slumped at the wheel. Young Mowen went to the home of his parents and the Jacoby ambulance was summoned. The elder Mr. Mowen was brought to the office of a Jerseyville physician where he was pronounced dead. Mr. Mowen had been in Jerseyville during the afternoon and was enroute home when he was fatally stricken. Death is believed to have resulted from a heart attack. Mr. Mowen had consulted a physician several days ago and at that time complained of a severe chest pain. The deceased was a son of the late Peter and Sarah Hillman Mowen and was born in Jersey County, September 14, 1878. His age at the time of death was seventy-four years, nine months and eleven days. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Sophia Mowen. Fraternally Mr. Mowen was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose No. 695 of Jerseyville. He is survived by three Nephews, Robert Mowen, Centralia, Preston Mowen, Jerseyville, Fred Newberry, Godfrey; and eight nieces, Mrs. Maynard Dunham and Mrs. Raymond Lofton, Roseau, Minnesota, Mrs. Charles Bray and Mrs. Melvin Gaddy, Alton, Mrs. John J. Mcguire, Mrs. Lee Massey and Mrs. Edward Roady, Jerseyville and Mrs. Toby Tyler of Centralia. Friends called at the home of Mr. Mowen’s nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. John J. McGuire, until Sunday morning when the body was removed to the Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Final rites were held at the Funeral Home Sunday afternoon, June 28, at 2 o’clock. Rev. William Sealock, pastor of the Baptist church in Kane, officiated at the services and interment was in Grimes cemetery.
MOWEN. Died 12-06-1897. Dated 1897 (newspaper source not noted): Mrs. George B. Mowen, formerly Miss Leona Monk, died at her home in this city Saturday, June 12, aged 32 years. The funeral took place from the ME church to the Grimes cemetery Monday at 2 pm. Rev. J. J. Porter conducting the services. Though her final illness was of short duration, Mrs. Mowen had been a sufferer from ill health for several years.
MOWEN. Died 28-07-1984. Dated July 1984: Funeral services for Preston Mowen, 82, of 27 Oakwood, Jerseyville were held at 1 pm Saturday Jul 28, at Gubser’s Funeral Home, Rev. R. E. George officiating. Burial was in the Grimes-Neely cemetery west of Jerseyville. Mowen was born in Jersey County, August 3, 1901, the son of Walter and Agnes Brooks Mowen. He died at 5:33 am. July 26 at Garnet’s Chateau. He was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Kane Masonic Lodge and Ainad Shrine Temple of East St. Louis. He was married to Anna Williams and she died in 1956. He married Eunice Kirchner, in Waterloo, in 1960. Surviving are his wife, Eunice, a son, Robert Mowen, Jerseyville, a step-daughter, Juanetta Powers, Jerseyville, three grandchildren, one great grandchild; two sisters, Nellie McGuire, Jerseyville and Eva Bray, Alton. A daughter, two sisters and his parents preceded him in death. Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children and the First Baptist church in Jerseyville, of which he was a member have been named as memorials.
MOWREY. Kane- Harda T. Mowrey, 91, died at 7:10 am Wednesday April 4, 1990 at Jerseyville Care Center. Born in Christensund, Norway, she was the daughter of the Late Dick and Nichalenia (Stokke) Thorenson. On February 1, 1921, in Fargo, North Dakota, she married Fred Mowrey. He died on August 21, 1979. Surviving are two Daughters, Dorothy Cummings of Champaign and Elna Crawford of Kane, a son, Marlin G. Mowrey of Dutzow, Missouri; 16 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren and 28 great-great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were a son, Lydle Mowrey; a sister, Karen Thorenson; and a brother, Thorvel Thorenson. She was a longtime member of the Royal Neighbors of America. Visitation is from 4 to 8 pm Friday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. the Elizabeth Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star will conduct rites at 7 pm. Services are at 10:30 am Saturday at Kane Baptist church. The Rev. Garold Cooper will officiate. Burial is in Kane cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Eastern Star Chapter of the church, both of which she was a member more than 60 years.
MUCKERMAN. Died 07-03-1979. Dated March 8, 1979: Funeral mass for Robert J. Muckerman of Brighton will be celebrated Friday morning at 10 o/clock at Our Lady of the Pillar church, St. Louis with burial in Calvary cemetery. His death occurred March 7. Muckerman owned an ice and fuel company in Alton. His survivors are a daughter, Jean Clair Murphy; five grandchildren, four sisters and one brother. His wife, the former Annabel Faber, preceded him in death. Visitation 4 to 9 pm Thursday at Kriegshauser West, 9450 Olive Blvd., St. Louis.
MUDD. Died 00-08-1966. Dated 8/4/66: Mrs. Thelma Marie Mudd of Route 1, Dow, became Jersey County’s second car fatality of the year Thursday afternoon when she died of injuries incurred in a two car crash as the junction of Route 100 and the Newbern road. The crash occurred at two-twenty o’clock about two and one-half miles east of the woman’s home. The use of safety belts is credited with saving the lives of the occupants of the other car involved in the accident. Bob Desherlia, 18, was listed as the driver of the one car, and his passenger was Dennis Warner, 16, of Jerseyville. The automobile driven by Desherlia was listed as the property of John Lahey of Jerseyville. Confirmation of the death of Mrs. Mudd was made by a physician at the Jersey Community Hospital. Young Desherlia, son of Mrs. Ann Desherlia, received treatment at the hospital for lacerations of the right eyelid and chin, contusions of the chin, and left hand. Warner, son of Mrs. and Mrs. William R. Warner of Route three, Jerseyville, was treated for a chin contusion and had three teeth chipped. The accident was investigated by Sheriff Paul Miller and State Trooper Elmer Lehr. Both cars were demolished. The body of the fatally injured woman was moved Thursday Night from the Jacoby Funeral Home in Jerseyville to the Neece Funeral Home in Waverly. Services were held at the Methodist church in Scottville Sunday afternoon and burial was in Panther Creek cemetery, Macoupin County. Rodney Jacoby, Jersey County Coroner, has not set an inquest date. The 51 year old Dow resident had been employed as a selector at Owens-Illinois plant in Alton. She was a daughter of David E. and Hannah Kemperman Ruyle, and was born in Scottville, July 8, 1915. A surviving daughter, Miss Shelby Mudd, is a former teacher in the Unit 100 school system. Among other survivors is a sister, Mrs. Lena Arnold of the Jerseyville area who is employed in the office of County Treasurer, Leslie Shines.
MUFFLEY. Died 00-06-1911. Jerseyville Republican, June 29, 1911: Caroline Louise, daughter of George and Mary Hoffman, born in Paradise neighborhood October 6, 1848, 63 years old. Married W. Muffley in 1873. Member of Paradise Baptist church for 47 years. Four children. Since the death of her daughter, Myrtis, she has had constant care of grandson. Ever willing to lend a helping hand, ever ready to help the down trodden. Leaves husband and sons, George Leroy and William C. one daughter, Lola E. Two grandsons and two grand daughters. MUFFLEY. Died 00-11-1966. Dated November, 1966: Requiem mass was celebrated at St. Francis Xavier church in Jerseyville at ten o’clock Monday morning for William C. Muffley, retired farmer of Jersey County, whose death occurred at Garnet’s Nursing Home late Wednesday morning. Father Francis D. Lee was celebrant of the mass and burial was in St. Francis cemetery. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where the rosary was recited Sunday evening. Mr. Muffley, a son of the late William Henry and Carolina B. Hoffman Muffley, was born in Jersey County, June 23, 1889. He had engaged in farming for a number of years and lived on Route 2, Brighton. He had lived in Jerseyville for four years and had been a patient at the nursing home for the past month and a half. Surviving Mr. Muffley are a son, Leonard, of Jerseyville; two daughters, Mrs. Clarence Berghoff of Alton and Mrs. Kenneth Lahr of Piasa; fifteen grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
MULBERRY. Jersey County Democrat, February 26, 1891: Mrs. Hannah Mulberry, maiden name Hankinson, born in Prebble County, Ohio, August 1837 and died on February 12, 1891, 53 years old. Twice married, to Mr. Henry Christopher February 9, 1859. Two children, one son, who died in infancy and Miss Maggie, sole survivor of the family. Mr. Christopher died on August 10, 1862. Her sister, Mrs. Craig, of Medora took care of her. In 1879 she married James Mulberry. He died March 21, 1883. Never a member of any church but lived kind, Christian life. Funeral from family home. MULCAHY. Died 00-02-1907. Jerseyville Republican, February 1907: Michael Mulcahy, 49 years old died at home in Brighton. His father, Daniel 80 years, died Tuesday afternoon. Double funeral took place this morning from St. Alphonsus church in Brighton. Buried in Brighton Catholic cemetery. Daniel Mulcahy born in Slady Castle, County Waterford, Ireland, 1826. In l850 came to America. Landed in New York and remained 5 years. In 1855 married Mary McCarty and started his “wedding tour” to far west to make his home. Lived in Alton, Illinois until 1865 when he bought tract of land in Sec. 27, Piasa township Jersey County. Built a house, cleared the land, reared family. Six children, two died in infancy and Michael. There remain to mourn Mrs. Wm. Moore of Fidelity, Mrs. Wm. Carney of Hartwell, Nebraska, and William now living with his aged mother on the homestead. Michael Mulcahy born in Alton, Illinois in 1859. Never married but lived life of dutiful son with parents. Upright man and ideal citizen.

MUNDY. Died 00-11-1957. Dated 11/14/57: Benton G. Mundy, Assistant County Superintendent of Highways in Jersey County, suffered a fatal illness Wednesday while operating a dragline near the Fulkerson bridge north of Jerseyville. He was pronounced dead at the Jersey Community Hospital where he was moved in the Jacoby Brothers Ambulance. Death was attributed to a coronary attack. Mr. Mundy had been an employee of the county highway department for the past thirty years serving under Eugene Witt and the late Paxton Witt. Following the death of the latter, Mr. Mundy served as acting superintendent for two years, and then became assistant superintendent working with the present superintendent, George C. Clausen. The decedent was born in Greene County, January 22, 1901, a son of the late John T. and Anna Belle Crawford Mundy. His age at the time of death was fifty six years, nine months and twenty one days. Mr. Mundy is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lillie Dunham Mundy; four daughters, Mrs. Alonzo Cochran of Eldorado, Mrs. Hugh Snell of Jerseyville, Mrs. Gilbert Turner and Miss Rebecca Mundy of Jerseyville; one brother, Sherman Mundy of Carrollton; one sister, Mrs. James Cochran of Granite City, and seven grandchildren. Friends may call at the Mundy home at 600 East Arch Street after seven o’clock this (Thursday) evening until eleven o’clock Saturday morning, and then at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where services will be held at two o’clock in the afternoon. Also surviving are four Brothers, Roy Mundy, Alton, Al, Brighton, Robert, Eugene, Oregon, and Richard, Seattle, Washington; seven sisters, Betty of Arizona, Martha McQuagge, Washington, Aldora Miller, Eileen Crew, Lela Williams and Lillian Lamparter of Alton. MUNDY. Jeanette Lynn “Jenny” Mundy, 13, of Jerseyville, died July 7, 1988 at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. She was born January 25, 1975 in Alton, the daughter of James K. and Judith (Hoffman) Mundy. She was an eight-grade student at Illini Junior High school. She was an honor student, member of student council, member of Illini Junior High band, 4-H member and CCD class at St. Francis Xavier church. Survivors include a sister, Diane Mundy of Jerseyville, maternal grandparents, Edward and Delores Hoffman of Godfrey; maternal great-grandmother, Helen Boedy of Godfrey. She was preceded in death by paternal grandparents Keith and Vivian Mundy. Visitation and a prayer service was July 8, 1988 at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral mass was July 9, at St. Francis Xavier church in Jerseyville with Rev. Henry Schmidt officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Jerseyville Free Library.
MUNDY. Died 00-06-1984. Dated June 4, 1984: Jerseyville – Keith Mundy, 76, died at 12:50 am Sunday at Christian hospital northeast in St. Louis after a brief illness. He was a partner in the Mundy Lumber and Supply Co. In Jerseyville. In 1924 he began work for the Alec Robb Lumber and Coal Co. That company later became the Jacobs Lumber and Coal Co. of which he became a partner in 1954. In 1956, it became the Mundy Lumber and Supply Co., in which he was active until three weeks ago. He was born in Kane, the son of the late James A. and Grace (Wheeler) Mundy. He married the former Vivian Downey September 2, 1933 in Jerseyville and she survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Jane Wainwright of Denver, Colorado.; one son, James of Jerseyville, two grandchildren; one sister, Irma Terpening of Kane; and one brother, Louis O. of Rosewood Heights. Visitation will be after 4 pm today at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Services will be at the Funeral Home Tuesday at 10:30 am with the Rev. V. Clay Noah, Jr. Presiding. MUNDY. Died 13-12-1985. Dated 1985: Vivian Mundy, 74, of Jerseyville, died December 13 at St. Anthony’s hospital in Alton. She was born March 1, 1911 in Jersey County to the late James A. and Mary Elizabeth Brokamp Downey. She married Keith Mundy on September 2, 1933 in Jerseyville. He died June 3, 1984. She was co-owner of Mundy Lumber Co. in Jerseyville. She was a member of First Baptist church and the Alton Wood River Sportsmen’s Club; she was a charter member of the Westlake Country Club. Survivors include son James of Jerseyville; daughter Jane M. Wainwright of Denver; brothers Herbert G. Downey of Mount Vernon and Ralph S. Downey of Jerseyville; Sisters, Norma Reese of Jerseyville, Marian Rougeau of Houma, Louisana; and Irene Gardner of Harvey, and two grandchildren.
MUNSTERMAN. Died 13-08-1977. Dated 8/15/77: Funeral mass will be celebrated at 9 am on August 16 at St. Francis Xavier church for Eugene J. Munsterman, 75, of 120 Barr Ave., Jerseyville with Father R. T. Shea celebrant. Burial will be in St. Francis cemetery. He died a 9:35 pm on August 13 at Jersey Community hospital. He was born October 3, 1901 in Jersey County, a son of Frank and Caterine Fleming Munsterman. Munsterman started the E. J. Munsterman Tire and Oil Co. In the 1920’s. He was formerly City Treasurer of Jerseyville and a director of Jersey Savings and Loan. He is survived by his widow, the Former Lucilee Schell, three sons, Richard, Joseph and John Munsterman, Jerseyville; one grandson; one brother and a Sister, F. A. Munsterman of Jerseyville and Mrs. Lauretta Barry of Florida. His parents and a sister preceded him in death. Friends may call at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home after 4 pm Monday where the rosary will be recited at 8 pm. The family has designated the St. Francis building fund as a memorial.
MUNSTERMAN. Died 08-04-1985. Dated 4/11/1985 : Francis Aloysius Munsterman, retired businessman, died at 12:25 am on April 8. He was born in Jerseyville, the son of the late Frank and Catherine Fleming Munsterman. He was attending Washington University in St. Louis when he enlisted in the US Army and was a veteran of World War I. Following the war and more college at the University of Illinois he was employed by Shell Oil Co. as a jobber and had more than 60 years of service in Calhoun County in that capacity. A member of the Illinois Petroleum Marketers Assoc., Munsterman received the distinguished Bucketeer award for being in petroleum marketing for over 50 years. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier church in Jerseyville. He served on the confraternity of Christian doctrine on the local, district, state and national levels. Munsterman was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was the first member of the Jerseyville Chapter to be a fourth degree member; he joined in East St. Louis before a fourth degree Chapter was established in Jerseyville. He was a former member of the Elks and Moose Lodges and a member of the American Legion. Munsterman was active in city activities including city council, water board and school board, and was a charter member of Westlake Country Club. He married Katherine Keyser on October24, 1925. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two Daughters, Jane Cornell of Tipp City, Ohio and Marilyn Barberick, Denver, Colorado.; two sons, Dwight of Garland, Texas, and Philip of Jacksonville, Illinois; 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, John Robert, one brother, Eugene Munsterman, and two sisters, Marie Munsterman and Loretta Barry. Funeral mass was concelebrated Wednesday morning at St. Francis Xavier church with the Revs. Patrick Morrow, William Hembrow and Roy Bauer concelebrants, preceded by visitation at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. MUNSTERMAN. Died 22-12-1981. Dated 12/29/81: A funeral mass for John Robert Munsterman was celebrated December 22 at St. Francis Xavier church with burial in St. Francis cemetery. He was the sone of Francis and Katherine Munsterman of Jerseyville and was a graduate from the Jersey township highschool and the Culinary Institute of America in New Haven, Conn. Munsterman had served in the United States Coast Guard. He is survived by his parents; two brothers, Dwight of Garland, Texas, and Philip of Jacksonville; and two Sisters, Jane Corness of Tipp City, Ohio and Marilyn Berberich of Denver, Colorado.
MUNSTERMAN. Dated 4/26/89: Katherine Keyser Munsterman, prominent Jerseyville resident, died April 13, 1989. Mrs. Munsterman was born in Wabash County, the daughter of the late John Edward and Romelda Jane Mcfarland Keyser. She married Francis Aloysius Munsterman on October 24, 1925, at St. Mary’s church in Mt. Carmel. He died April 8, 1985. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier church in Jerseyville where she was founder and served as the first president of St. Francis Mother’s Club. She organized the Jersey County Chapter of the American Cancer society and was a charter member and former past president of the Jerseyville Woman’s Club. She was also a charter member and former board member of Westlake Country Club, a member of the Jersey Community Hospital Auxiliary and active in the American Red Cross blood program and boy scouts and girl scouts. She was a 50 year member of Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the Jersey County Historical Society and the American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by two Daughters, Jane Cornell of Tipp City, Ohio and Marilyn Berberick of Denver, Colorado.; two sons, Dwight of Garland, Texas and Philip of Jacksonville; 12 grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, John Mcfarland Keyser of Winter Park, Florida, and a sister, Ellen Holland of Indianapolis, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, John Robert, three brothers, Leo H. Keyser, Paul Keyser and Joe Keyser, a granddaughter and a sister, Clara Schultheis. A funeral mass was held at 10 am April 17 at St. Francis Xavier church, with the Rev. William Hembrow and the Rev. Roy Bauer, con-celebrants. Burial was at St. Francis cemetery. MUNZEBROCK. Died 07-09-1972. Dated 9/14/72: Final services for Zeno Munzebrock, 58 of Danville, a former Jerseyville resident, were held Sunday at the Pate Funeral Home in Danville. His death occurred September 7 at the river view hospital in Danville. Mr. Munzebrock was a nephew of Frances Waldheuser of Jerseyville and was the sone of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Munzebrock of Kampsville. Born in Jersey County April 6, 1889 daughter of Richard and Rachel Kelly Alward. Leaves two sons, William of Hettick and Gene of Greenfield. Three daughters, Mrs. Thomas Allen and Mary French of Jerseyville and Mrs. Anna Marie Drew of Havana. 11 grandchildren, six great grandchildren. Husband Andrew Murphy whom she married March 24, 1914, died March 13, 1949.

Had spent last few years in the West and Alaska. Went to Seattle and then to California. Leaves father, mother, and four brothers; George, Edard, Harry and Fred, one sister-Mrs. Anna Davis of Jerseyville.

MURPHY. Clarence P. Murphy, 86, died Thursday June 21, 1990 at Clay West Nursing Home, St. Charles, Missouri. A furniture and antiques dealer, Murphy owned and operated the trading post in Jerseyville for 20 years. He was a member of the Jerseyville Assembly of God church. He was born in Buford, Arkansas, son of the late James U. and Drucilla (Robinson) Murphy. His wife, the former Zella Mae Gibson, preceded him in death. Surviving are three children, Billie Ecton of St. Charles, Janie Kyhl of St. Louis and James C. Murphy of Defiance, Missouri; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Patrick Murphy of California. Preceding him in death were four brothers, Bud, Coy, Elsa and Dewey Murphy; and five Sisters, Nona Blevins, Bessie Ramsey, Una Johnson, Cloda Hall and Babe Murphy. Visitation is from 6 to 9 pm today at Baue Funeral Home, 620 Jefferson St., St. Charles. Graveside services are at 10 am Monday at Oak Grove cemetery in St. Charles. The Rev. Warren Huffines will officiate. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer society.
MURPHY. Died 14-02-1966. Emmett L. Murphy, former Chamber secretary, dies: Emmett L. Murphy of Elsah, executive secretary of the Jerseyville Chamber of Commerce for the ten year period from 1955-65, died at five forty-five o’clock Monday morning February 14 at Memorial hospital in Alton where he had previously undergone major surgery. Friends may call at the Gubser Funeral Home where final rites will be held at two o’clock this (Thursday) afternoon. Rev. Melvin Byrd of Alton, pastor of the Elsah Methodist church, will officiate and burial will be in the Elsah cemetery. Survivors of Mr. Murphy are his wife, Mrs. Eva Murphy; two sons, John B. Murphy of Kansas City, Missouri, and Robert M. Murphy of Chicago; one daughter, Mrs. Leonard Lindblom of Chicago, and five grandchildren. Mr. Murphy , a native of Jerseyville, was a son of the late Daniel and Theresa M. Reintges Murphy, prominent early residents of the county. He was eighty years old last November. The senior Murphy was at one time County Clerk in Jersey County. Mr. Murphy’s business career included the operation of his own brokerage Firm, E. L. Murphy and Company, in Chicago, and a secretary position with C. S. Trench and Company in New York. In 1942 he was called to Washington, DC, by the government and for the next five years was negotiator for Metals Reserve Division of Reconstruction Finance Corporation, the activities of which were world-wide in scope. Mr. and Mrs. Murphy later returned to the family home in Elsah and the former became active in the affairs of his home county and its communities. He served on the County Board as Supervisor from Elsah township for eight years. MURPHY. Elsah: Eva F. Murphy, 95, died at 4:45 pm Thursday September 14, 1989 at VIP Manor in Wood River. She was born in Chicago, daughter of the late Harry and Luella Frillman. Her husband, Emmett Murphy, preceded her in death. Surviving are a Stepdaughter, Gale Blindbolm of Chicago; two stepsons, John Murphy of Kansas City, Missouri and Robert Murphy of Chicago; and two grandsons. No visitation is scheduled. She was born in Odell July 6, 1884, a daughter of John and Mary Morrow Gassensmith. Her husband, James F. Murphy, died April 3, 1970. Her survivors include two sons, the Rev. Joseph F. Murphy, South Bend, Indiana and Jay E. Murphy of Alton; four daughters, Mrs. Catherine Kallal, Greenville; Marie Murphy, St. Louis, Mrs. Florence Metzger, Elkhart, Indiana; Mrs. Mildred Duncan, Memphis, Tennessee; two brothers Edward Gassensmith, Joliet and Cyril Gassensmith, South Bend, Indiana; and two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Pellochoud, Joliet, and Sister Mary Frederick, Sacred Hearth Academy, Springfield; 29 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren. Two sons, five brothers and a sister preceded her in death. Visitation from 5 to 9 Wednesday at Jacoby Funeral Home where the rosary will be recited at 8 pm.
MURPHY. Died 00-01-1971. Word was received Sunday, January 10, of the death of Francis (Pat) Murphy, son of Mrs. Florence Murphy, formerly of Jerseyville, and the late James F. Murphy. Death, due to terminal cancer, followed an illness of two weeks. His brother, father Joseph Murphy of South Bend, Indiana, had been at his bedside throughout his illness and was celebrant of the funeral mass Wednesday morning, January 13 at nine o’clock at Holy Trinity Church in El Cajon, California. Mr. Murphy is survived by his wife, June; his daughters, Joan, Roberta, Patricia and Rebecca; his mother, Mrs. James F. Murphy of the Loretto Home, Alton; two brothers, Father Murphy and Jay Murphy of Alton; and four sisters, Mrs. Catherine Kallal of Greenfield, Miss Marie Murphy of St. Louis, Mrs. Florence Metzger of Elkhart, Indiana, and Mrs. Mildred Duncan of Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Murphy had spent the greater part of his life in southern California where he owned and operated the Murphy Art Gallery.

MURPHY. Died 13-02-1947. Dated February, 1947: Henry C. Murphy of Jerseyville died at one o’clock Thursday afternoon February 13, at Our Savior’s hospital in Jacksonville where he had been removed for treatment the preceding day. Prior to his removal to the hospital he had been ill at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Maggie Talley near Woody for a few months. The deceased was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Levi Murphy and was born in Greene County, July 14, 1876. His age at the time of his death was seventy years, six months, and twenty-nine days. Mr. Murphy is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Talley of Woody; three Sons, Warren and Harold Murphy of Alton, and Kenneth Murphy of Jerseyville; six grandchildren; and two brothers, Stanford Murphy of Oklahoma, and William Murphy of Jerseyville. Funeral services were held at the Gubser Funeral Home Sunday, February 16, at two o’clock. The Rev. Leroy Filby officiated and interment was in the Borlin cemetery.

Requiem mass for James Francis Murphy, 83, a retired decorator and painter in Jerseyville for many years, was celebrated Tuesday morning at 9:30 o’clock at the Holy Ghost church with his son, Rev. Father Joseph F. Murphy, celebrant. The homily was given by Rev. Father Francis Lee. His death occurred at 11:55 Saturday morning at Jersey Community Hospital. Interment was in the St. Francis Xavier cemetery. Born April 20, 1886 in Delevan, he was the son of James and catherine ryan Murphy. Mr. Murphy was a sixty year member of the Knights of Columbus and had been active in the confraternity of Christian doctrine. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Florence Gassensmith Murphy; four daughters, Mrs. V. c. (catherine) kallal of Greenville, Miss Marie E. Murphy of St. Louis, Mrs. John (Florence) Metzger of Elkhart, Indiana, and Mrs. Harry (Mildred) Duncan of Cincinnati, Ohio; and three sons, Francis J. Murphy of El Cajon, California, Father Murphy of South Bend, Indiana, and Jay E. Murphy of Alton; 30 grandchildren; one brother, Leo Murphy of Odell; and one sister, Mrs. Leo Feehan, also of Odell. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where the rosary was recited at 8 pm Monday.
MURPHY. Died 12-11-1980. Kenneth Earl Murphy, 38, of 211 E. Spruce St., Jerseyville was pronounced dead on arrival at 6:15 am November 12 at Jersey Community Hospital. He was stricken with polio when he was 14. He was born August 1, 1942 in Jerseyville, the son of Carl and Marguerite Herring Murphy. His survivors are his parents, a brother and Sister, Gerald Murphy and Shirly Monroe of Jerseyville, two nieces and four nephews. The funeral was held Friday afternoon at the First Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Kenneth Schmidgall officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. The First Assembly of God Church and the March of Dimes have been designated as memorials.

Dated 1953: Michael Murphy, a native of Jersey County, died Thursday morning, February 26, in a Springfield hospital where he had been a surgical patient for the past few weeks. Mr. Murphy was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Murphy and was born in Jersey County. He observed his seventy-seventh birthday anniversary on December 29, 195?. Mr. Murphy engaged in farming in Jersey County for several years and about twenty years ago moved to Springfield where he continued his farming operations for a few years. In recent years he had been employed in Springfield. He was the surviving member of his family. The death of his wife occurred several months ago. Funeral services were held Saturday morning, February 28, at the Church of the Little Flower in Springfield and interment was in that city. Among relatives and friends attending the final rites were his sister-in-law, Mrs. Andrew Murphy, Mrs. Thomas Allen, Mrs. Gene Murphy, Mr. and Mrs. William Murphy, Matt Walsh, James Wahle, Jr. and Mrs. Roy Sears of Jerseyville, Mrs. Jack Drew of Carrollton, Mrs. William Harmon of Kane and Mrs. Frank Stites of Alton.

MURPHY. Died 15-07-1980. Dated 7/22/1980: Funeral services for Raymond W. Murphy, 78, of Route 2, Jerseyville were held July 18 at the Gubser Funeral Home with Raymond Worden officiating. Burial was in Lax cemetery. Murphy was born February 24, 1902 near Enid, Oklahoma, the son of William A. and Sarah Dunham Murphy. He died at 5:10 am July 15 at St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton. He retired 13 years ago from Owens Illinois where he was a machine operator. He is survived by a daughter, Patricia Ann Morgan of Palmyra; three sons, John W. (Bill) Murphy of Jerseyville; Robert R. Murphy of Carrollton and Ronald L. Murphy of the United States Air Force in Germany; five grandchildren and a brother Truman Murphy of Carrollton. He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. The family designated the American Cancer society as a memorial.

Murphy, of English township died Sunday afternoon, May 6, at five-ten o’clock at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Gross, on South Lafayette Street. The decedent was a daughter of the late Hugh and Martha Seago Dunham and was born in Jersey County on October 23, 1881. Her age at the time of death was sixty-nine years, six months and thirteen days. Surviving Mrs. Murphy in addition to her husband are one daughter, Mrs. Carl Gross of this city; two sons, Raymond Murphy of Jerseyville and Truman Murphy of Kane, six grandchildren; one brother, Otto Dunham of Jerseyville, and three sisters, Mrs. Ellen Lane of Bloomfield, Missouri, Mrs. Emma Burch of Kane and Mrs. Shrelda Driscoll of Alton. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon may 8 at two thirty o’clock. Rev. W. L. Showers of Granite City officiated at the rites and interment was in Lax cemetery.

Dated 8/15/68: Melvin Louis Murray, foreman of the press department of the Democrat News, died unexpectedly at six-fifty o’clock Tuesday morning, August 13, at the Jersey Community Hospital where he had been admitted for medical care on Saturday. Murray, though not feeling well, had continued on the job until three-thirty o’clock the previous Thursday afternoon. Visitation hours are at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where the rosary will be recited at eight o’clock on Thursday evening. A requiem mass will be celebrated at nine-thirty o’clock Friday morning at St. Francis Xavier church with Father Francis Lee as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Francis cemetery. Mr. Murray, a son of the late John and Katherine Graner Murray, was born in Jersey County, January 26, 1910. His age at time of death was fifty-eight years, six months, and seventeen days. He was educated in the Jerseyville school system and was graduated from the Jersey Township High School with the class of 1928 which held its fortieth graduation anniversary on Sunday. Mr. Murray had made reservations to attend the reunion before becoming ill. Mr. Murray, or “Buck” as he was better known to friends and business associates, joined the staff of the Democrat News in October, 1942, and had remained continuously in the employ of the newspaper firm since that time. In addition to his printing occupation, Mr. Murray worked for a number of years on a part-time basis at the Stadium Theatre. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Adelia Hughes Murray; three sons, Robert L. Murray of Jerseyville, David L. Murray of Decatur, and Richard T. Murray of Godfrey; six grandchildren, one brother John Murray of Dow; and four sisters, Mrs. Jack Leak of San Rafael, California, Mrs. Loyal Stamps of Jerseyville and Mrs. Edgar Halliday of East Alton. A son, Francis Aaron, died in infancy.

The graveside service was January 8 at Oak Grove cemetery with the Rev. John Wilson officiating. Memorial has been established to First Baptist church of Jerseyville and the United Way.

Visitation was held at the Funeral Home Sunday after 4 pm. A machinist, he was born January 1, 1916 in Paynor, Missouri, a son of Thomas and Dovie Franklin Murrell. His wife, Mrs. Jasmine Meier Murrell, survives. Other survivors are three sons, Carman B. of Alton; Lanny K. of Miami, Florida; and Michael V. of Grafton; a daughter, Jennifer of Grafton; three grandchildren; a brother, Burvie of Grafton; and two sister, Mrs. Leslie (Hazel) Rodgers of Jerseyville and Mrs. Haskell (Ethel) Creason of Kansas City, Kansas. His parents and a sister preceded him in death.
MURRIE. Jerseyville – Joel M. Murrie, 73, died at 6:30 pm Monday, March 5, 1990, at home after a lengthy illness. Murrie, a US Army World War II veteran, was a barber for 52 years before retiring in 1988. He was co-owner of Williams and Murrie barber shop and Murrie and Heafner barber shop, both in Jerseyville. He was a volunteer working at Jersey Community Hospital, Jerseyville. Born in Simpson, he was the son of the Late Ned and Bertie (Gillespie) Murrie. On December 9, 1961, in Jerseyville, he married the former Elizabeth Schlansker Long. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Joyce D. Moore of Jerseyville and Nancy S. McCain of Bristow, Oklahoma; a step Son, Paul M. Long of Jerseyville; six grandchildren, two sisters, Leone Mount of Vienna and Mildred Anderson of Edwardsville; and a Brother, Robert Murrie of Paducah, Kentucky. A brother, Thomas Murrie, preceded him in death. Visitation is from 4 to 9 pm Wednesday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Visitation will continue from noon Thursday Until service time at 1:30 pm at the First Baptist church in Jerseyville. The Rev. Walter Burk will officiate. Burial is in Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the church, where he was a member, or to the ALS Society (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

MYERS. Died 24-06-1983. The funeral of Alma R. Myers, 69, of Route 1, Grafton was conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Grafton Baptist church in Grafton by the Rev. William Hendricks. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery. She died at 1:35 pm on June 24 at St. Anthony’s hospital in Alton. Born October 24, 1913 in Harrisburn, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Lela Taylor Gibbs. Mrs. Myers retired in 1981 from Principia College where she was a housekeeper for 26 years. She was a member of the Grafton Baptist church. Her survivors are her husband, Paul L. Myers whom she married on November 17, 1934 in Alton; daughter, Judy Hayes of Grafton; brothers Tom Gibbs of Florida and Glynn Gibbs of Indiana; Sister, Virginia Blochburger of Wood River; four grandchildren and a great grandchild. MYERS. Died 16-03-1975. The funeral of Arthur Myers, 71, of 201 E. Arch St., Jerseyville was held Wednesday afternoon, March 19 at the First Baptist church with the Rev. Everett Chambers officiating. His death occurred at 7:30 pm on March 16 at the Jersey Community Hospital. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. He was born in Illinois November 24, 1903, the son of the Late Roy and Bertha Kirchner Myers. Myers was a retired custodian of the – rest of obit missing.
MYERS. Died 19-03-1969. Funeral services were held at two o’clock Saturday afternoon at the First Baptist church for Mrs. Bertha Mary Myers of 201 East Arch Street, Jerseyville. Rev. Carlton Christenson officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation hours were held at the Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. The death of Mrs. Myers occurred at seven-fifteen o’clock Wednesday night, March 19 at Waters Nursing Home where she had been a patient for the past four and one-half months. Mrs. Myers, a daughter of the late Otha and Mary Brockmeyer Kirchner, was born in Jersey County. Her age at the time of death was eighty-three years, nine months, and thirteen days. Her survivors are one son, Arthur C. Myers of Jerseyville; one daughter, Mrs. Leah Neidringhaus of Jennings, Missouri; seven grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy C. Myers; two daughters, Mrs. Marie Wittman and Mrs. Norma Herr, and one granddaughter.

Myers, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Myers, 505 North Washington St., died early Saturday morning, May 25, in Carbondale of injuries suffered in a car-train crash at a railroad crossing in Makanda about eight or nine miles south of Southern Illinois University campus in Carbondale where she was a student. Funeral services for Miss Myers were held Monday afternoon at two o’clock at the Gubser Funeral Home with the Rev. Louis Purcell, pastor of the United Methodist church, officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation hours were held at the Funeral Home and among the many calling were a number of sorority sisters and students and professors from Southern Illinois University where Miss Myers was completing her junior studies. The Jerseyville girl was a passenger in a car driven by William E. Conkle, Jr. of Pekin. He was seriously injured and after treatment at the Carbondale hospital was transferred to a hospital in St. Louis. Another passenger, Kathleen J. Callahan, 21 of Oglesby, was also injured in the accident and was admitted to the SIU Medical Center in Carbondale. The Jerseyville girl was majoring in communications, radio and tv and was active in many school affairs. Most recently she had served as a member of the steering committee for the Miss Southern contest and she had been asked to pledge Alpha Epsilon Rho, National Broadcasting Honor Society. Her sorority was Sigma Sigma Sigma. A daughter of Virgil and Ada Mourning Myers, Denise was born in Jersey County on June 15, 1947, and would have marked her twenty-first birthday anniversary next month. Surviving her in addition to her parents are one sister, Mrs. Jack Shafer of this city, her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Roddey. Burial in charge of Grafton Woodman Camp. Leaves three sons; Clyde of Rosedale, Lee of Granite City; George of Florida and one daughter, Mrs. William Smith of Rosedale. Born may 31, 1862 in Calhoun County and married February 14,1883 to Ida May Birdnow. Five children: Benjamin Harrison, John Leland, William Clyde, George Edward. One daughter, Mrs. Nellie Jane Smith. Home lover and much endeared to his children. His sons and daughter. Enjoyed visits to old homestead. He joined ME church at Hartford early in life. Member of MWA. Hard worker, good husband and father. Neighbor to all and would accommodate a friend.
MYERS. Died 00-05-1894. Jerseyville Republican, June 1, 1894: Mrs. Katherine Myers born may 19, 1851 in Effingham County, Illinois. 43 years. Converted in 1889 and joined Baptist church in Pleasant Cove. By reason of the church going down at that point, she joined the ME church at Plainview. Married Samuel J. Myers August 11, 1867. 11 children. 8 survive. May we meet when life is over, a still unbroken bank, around the throne of endless joy within the sunbright land; in the beautiful home in the skies, where the hope of our souls shall have no blight and our love no broken ties.
MYERS. Died 12-04-1967. Luther Myers, 85 year old retired Jersey County farmer, died Wednesday morning April 12, at two o’clock at his home on Route one, Grafton. The body is at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where friends may call after 2 o’clock this (Thursday) afternoon. Final rites will beheld at the Funeral Home Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock with Rev. Hollis Brimer of East Alton and Rev. James Haserodt pastor of Newbern Assembly of God church, officiating. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Park. Mr. Myers was a son of the Late Samuel and Catherine Simpson Myers, and was born in Jersey County on January 12, 1882. He was engaged in farming in the county all of his life. Mr. Myers was a charter member of the Newbern Assembly of God church and the Jerseyville Labor Local. Surviving him are two Sons, Harold F. Myers and Ray H. Myers of Grafton, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. His wife, Mrs. Edith Myers, one daughter, Alma Lynn, and a son Ernest Floyd Myers, preceded him in death.
MYERS. Died 25-04-1986. Paul L. Myers, 72, of Grafton died April 25 at St. Anthony’s hospital in Alton. He was born March 28, 1914 to the late Louis Myers and Ruth Defoshia. He married Alma Gibbs on November 17, 1934, in Alton. She died June 24, 1983. He was a truck driver and a veteran of World War II. He was a member of Teamsters Local No. 525 and a life member of VFW No. 1308 in Alton. Survivors include Sister Pauline Hatcher of Alton and Niece Judy Hayes of Grafton. The funeral was April 28 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Grafton. Burial was at Scenic Hill cemetery.
MYERS. Died 17-05-1985. Robin Bruce Myers, 28, Kane, died may 17 in an automobile accident on Sunderland road. He was born July 19, 1956 in Jerseyville, the son of Harold and Marjorie Ann Camerer Myers. He was a machine operator for Tetra Plastics in Chesterfield, Missouri. He was a member of the Assembly of God church in Jerseyville. Surviving are his parents, Harold and Marjorie Myers of Kane, and a sister, Joyce Myers, also of Kane. Funeral services were held Tuesday, may 21 at the First Assembly of God church in Jerseyville, Revs. Wayne Pendleton and William Turner officiating. Burial was at the Oak Grove cemetery. The Assembly of God church building fund has been named as a memorial.
MYERS. Virgil George Myers, 70, died at 3:10 pm Wednesday Nov. 1, 1989, at home after a lengthy illness. He was a real estate broker for Mourning Realty Co. In Jerseyville from 1952 until retiring in 1984, and a US Army World War II veteran. Born in Rosedale, he was the son of the Late Clyder and Clara (Schlansker) Myers. On January 7, 1939 in St. Charles, Missouri, he married the Former Ada Mourning. Surviving are his wife; a Daughter, Joyce Shafer of Jerseyville; four grandchildren; and a Sister, Glennon Krueger of Jerseyville. Preceding him in death were a daughter, Denise Myers; and a brother, Gordon Myers. He was past commander of the VFW Post 4528 and a member of American Legion Post 492, Masonic Lodge 394, Elks Lodge and the Moose Lodge, all of Jerseyville. Visitation is from 4 to 9 pm Friday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville with a rites at 7 pm by the Jerseyville Masonic Lodge 394 AF & AM. Funeral services area 1 pm Saturday at the Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Epperly officiating. Graveside military rites will be conducted at Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville by the American Legion and VFW Posts. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer society or the First Baptist church of Jerseyville, where he was a member.

Born April 22, son of George Myers of Rosedale township. Former Deputy Sheriff of Jersey County, serving under Sheriff Charles Schlansker. Also leaves wife, Mrs. Jula Myers of Portland, Oregon; son Gordon Myers of Sandys, Oregon; three step Children, Kenneth Pickett, Mrs. Mary Murphy, and Mrs. Juanita Burchki of Portland, two brothers, George of Jerseyville and Harrison of Alton. 21 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren. Sister and a brother preceded him within the last six months.
MYERS. William Newell Myers, 86, of Alton, died at 5 am Monday December 26, 1988 at Eldercare of Alton. He was a retired self-employed painter. Born in Grafton, his parents were the late William Henry and Lora Ellen (Johnson) Myers. A Sister, Lucille Young of Alton, survives. Preceding him in death were two brothers, Everett and Truman Myers; and a sister, Verna Irene Edwards. Visitation is 11 am Wednesday until time of services at 1 pm at Elias-Smith Funeral Home in Alton. The Rev. Timothy Keller will officiate. Burial will be in Upper Alton cemetery.
