The government was already engaged at the time, waging the war of 1812. No troops were furnished to protect settlers, and pioneers farther north, like the the pioneers of the dark and bloody ground of KY, were left almost to their own resources. BRIDGES, Horace F., died 1904. (Letter to Editor of Republican newspaper Jersey county; Jan. 10, 1905.) Your paper on Dec. 15, contains the obit of Horace F Bridges. I notice some inaccuracies whicn brings the mind into a reminiscent mood. Horace F Bridges was born in Jersey, then Greene County. His (our) father, Hiram Bridges, came to Greene County about 1829, settled near the site of Fieldon, and was founder of that place. Our grandfather, Josiah Armstrong, a revolutionary soldier, had previously settled there. The first settlers in Jersey County located in the heavy timber west of Jersey and were some years ahead of the New Jersey crowd which settled on the prairie and founded the town of Jersey. I haven’t a chart before me and only write from memory and that which I have heard. Although not quite sixty years of age I have a clear recollection of the time when about everybody in our neighborhood wore blue jeans or butternut. There was only 1 painted house on the road to between Jerseyville and Fieldon. I believe, Dr Snell had his house painted or a tile roof. The rule, in fact all, were houses of logs. Sometimes not clinked (chinked?) and daubed. An ash hopper in front facing the big oak, spinning wheel, and hand looms galore. Upsairs was in the loft, reached by a ladder where the (ten?) over plus of children were stowed at night. Our people always had books. I do not know where they came from, I think heirlooms from Virginia and Kentucky. The late Rev. B B Hamilton, a brother of Dr J. O Hamilton told me that the only place in our whole country where he found plenty of books was at our house and at the house of my uncle Enoch Bridges, an old time preacher of the pabtist (papist?) (Baptist?) persuasion. As I remember that those old-time people were good neighbors. They stood by each other. Although one may have been a wanderer, seen many countries, and taken desperate chances, as the devout isrealite turned his face toward Jerusalem in prayer, so our heart and memory goes back to the old scenes. (Signed) William E Bridges

Among one of the earliest ones to enlist for the service of his country, under the Union banners, at the breaking out of the Civil War. A company was formed composed of men from Greene, Jersey and Calhoun counties, but their services were not accepted by the government, as it was thought that no more assistancewould be needed. They were determined to enter the service, and enlisted as a body in the 6th Missouri regiment, under Colonel Bland at St. Louis. They began service in Missouri and their first fighting was at Pilot Knob. From there they went up the Missouri River to Jefferson City, thence to Tipton, and were in the famous forced march of General Fremont from Tipton to Springfield.

After finishing service there they went to Shiloh, and then to Corinth, which they captured. From there they went to Memphis, Tennessee, then to Chickasaw Bayou, where the regiment lost 85 men in ten minutes. Then to Arkansas Point, and settled down to the seige of Vicksburg, where our subject assisted in making the famous canal, while in charge of a fatigue squad. He was in the whole seige there and participated in the capture of the city. He was left in charge of the sick in his regiment for awhile and joined it later on at Camp Sherman on Black River. They came up the river to Memphis and marched to Chattanooga where they participated in the celebrated crossing of the river on pontoons, then went to Knoxville to relieve General Burnsides. They wintered in Bridgeport, Alabama, and in the spring of 1864, Mr. Briggs re-enlisted and came home on veteran furlough. After 60 days he joined Sherman at Dalton, Georgia, and from that point was with him on his world-renowned march to the sea, participating in all the engagements. His regiment went with Sherman up through the Carolinas to Washington, and participated in the last grand review of Sherman’s army at the National Capitol. His regiment then went to Louisville, Kentucky thence to Little Rock, Arkansas where they were discharged, and afterwards were mustered out at St. Louis, Mo., only 30 men being left out of 110 who enlisted. BRINGHURST, James, born 1818, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, died 23-06-1870, buried Oakland cemetery. James Bringhurst, 52, departed this life June 23, 1870. It is our sSad duty to chronicle the decease of one so well and favorably known as the subject of this memorial, which we regret in such limited space is unequal to what we feel the mournful event deserves. Dr Bringhurst, a Philadelphian by birth, removing to our section at an early day, identified himself with its interest, grew with its growth and attained celebrity in his profession. No one seemed better aquainted with our various types of disease, local and general, which he handled with marked success to the physical relief of his many patients. Acumen and persevering energy entered into the man’s composition and won a place for him among the chief of his medical brethern, but who is not mortal? After years spent in baffling the ills which flesh is heir to the champion is forced to battle for himself, and finds his own tenure of life in jeopardy. Suffice it to say that after long months of torturing ailment, our friend was fain to concede the palm to victor death, and the skilled physician falls victim to what is known as “bright’s” disease, that rarely fails to secure its priy in the fatal embrace. Dr Bringhurst departed this life June 23, in his 52 yr, resigned to the divine decree and comparatively without a struggle. In order to afford his extensive circle of relations, friends and acquaintances opportunity to attend, his funeral took place Sun noon where he died at his brother-in-law’s residnce, Henry Ryan, Fidelity and he was buried in Oakland cemetery, near there. The concourse was unusually large, it being estimated that between 900 and 1000 were present, the procession, of some 200 vehicles, extending quite from the house to the burying bround. Great numbers came from adjacent towns and country, besides the Free Masons Lodges of Jerseyville and Fidelity. After the Order for Burial for the Dead, by Rev. Henry G. ?arry of the Episcopal church, the Worshipful Masters, Charles Miner and Edward R Teitsort of Jerseyville and Fidelity AF & AM, respectively, with officers and members in uniform attending under county. Smith M. Titus as marshal, Rev. Mr. Pery rendered, by request, the appropriate ritual masonic, and the whold fraternity joined to accord the grand honors and minutia of mystic ceremonial in respect to their lamented dead. Dr Bringhurst leaves a widow and 4 sons, (the youngest 11 yrs) to deplore their loss of the dutiful husband and devoted parent. They share the sympathy of all and those who best knew the deceased will realize wath the bereavement of this family is. Peace to his ashes.

BROGLIE. Flora, Elanor and Mary Broglie, young daughters of Joseph Broglie of Alton, were drowned in a shallow Mississippi river slough near Riehl, IL, yesterday afternoon, after the skiff in which Thomas Harr of Upper Alton was rowing them had capsized. Harr, in trying to save one at a time, was seized by all and barely escaped with his own life. Roger Wyckoff, 6 years old, the fifth member of the skiff party, saved himself by bestriding the overturned boat. Efforts at resuscitating the girls were made under directions from Dr Enos of Alton, to whom H. C. Christoe telephoned from E a Riehl’s house on a high bluff. Christoe shouted the physician’s orders to those below, and they almost succeded in restoring the oldest girl. She showed signs of life, but relapsed and died. Flora was a member of a large camping party which has for a week been tenting on the Illinois shore, along a slough which separates the mainland from Scotch Jimmy’s and near the mouth of Piasa creek. Riehl Station is 6 miles north of Alton, and is named after the family whose home crowns the bluff. The 2 younger Broglie girls went to the camp yesterday, intending to stay over Sunday, but there was no room for them, and they had to make their plans to go home on the afternoon train. Shortly before 3 pm while Flora was bathing in the slough near the camp, young Harr, another bather, offered to give her and her sisters a skiff ride. They accepted the invitation but said they must be back by train time, so it was decided to row up the slough to “the falls” a quarter of a mile above. Flora was in her bathing suit the others in everyday costume. – rest incomplete

BROWNLEE, Frances Eliza (Wyckoff), born 29-06-1849, Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois, died 28-11-1917, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Frances Eliza Brownlee, 68, youngest of 7 children, was born in Jerseyville, June 29, 1849. He father, David G. Wyckoff, of sturdy New York stock, early in life married Phoebe Eliza (Bonnell) Brownlee, and the late thirties, moved to IL. In 1840 Mr. Wyckoff came to Jerseyville and engaged in business, first as a merchant tailor, later establishing a general merchantile business, which he conducted up to the time of his death in 1892. In 1851, his wife died, and the care of the household fell upon the shoulders of Catherine, the eldest daughter, then barely 15 years old. A task she assumed with loving devotion and performed with rare ability. The daughter, Frances, as a girl, attended the young ladies seminary at Jerseyville, when it was so successfully conducted by Mrs. L. M. Cutting. Nov 15, 1871, she married John Q Brownlee. Early married life was spent in Lincoln, NE and later moved to Marion, IN, where her husband identified with publication of the Lincoln State Journal and the Marion Chronicle. They were parents of 4 daughters, Luce E, Catherine W, Cornelia J. and Clara B. Grief seems never to have remained a stranger to her. In March 1889, while the family was residing at the old Wyckoff home in Jerseyville, Mrs. Brownlee’s oldest sister Catherine passed away. Having cared so tenderly for the children, since her mother’s death, her work ended, loved and cherished by all, she went to her reward. In Nov. of the same year, Lucy the eldest daughter, then an honored member of Jerseyville high school graduating class, sickened and died. Within 3 days the grandfather, as if too lonely to survive died within a year and a half, the husband, while on a trip to Chicago was stricken. Frances Eliza was the last of the immediate family. Her sister, Mrs. Cornelia J. Shephard having died May 4, 1915. Mrs Brownlee was worn and weary from the ceasless care and attention given her sister, who lingered so long, never recovered her health. She went to TX to spent winter with her daughter, Cornelia, thinking to benefit from the change in climate. She returned improved. This summer she became worse and went to Alton to spend the winter with daughter, Catherine. Did not improve. Surviving 3 daughters, Catherine W Boynton, Alton, Cornelia J. Brownlee and Mrs. Clifford (Clara B) Dearth of Eau Claire, WI. 1 granddaughter Mary Frances Dearth. Remains were brought to the Brownlee home, Jerseyville, where the funeral was held and interment was in Oak Grove mausoleum. Quiet, unassuming nature, interested in all about her, ever kind an considerate, endeared herself to all who knew her. Pallbearers: Wm. Johnson Carrol Ruckel both of White Hall, H. BROWNLEE, Lucy E., born 01-1874, Marion, Grant County, Indiana, died 18-11-1893. Lucy E Brownlee, 19, was one of the few young ladies whose characters, talents and personal beauties seem perfect. Her death occurred on Thurs, Nov.18, like a black curtain descending suddenly upon a picture of rarest lovelieness. 2 wks before she had participated in all the pleasures that girlish youth affords, going to St. Louis to take her weekly vocal lesson of Prof Bollman who, with his other vocal instructors, had predicted a wonderful future for her, attending to school duties, going about with her young friends with elastic step and the flush of health in her unusually charming features. Her physique appeared erect, tall and graceful, and no one could have predicted her fate to be as it was within 14 days. Her malady came suddenly upon her, and physicians were at once called to allay the terrible congestion of the stomach. After a few days of most discouraging sickness she appeared to be recovering, and began to plan, with her usual animation and hope, for a speedy continuance of her musical and scholastic work. Again she sank, and after hovering on the borderline of life and death several days, her spirit, too etherial for this world of work and sorrow, returned to the creator. Sadness and tears were almost universal in this city when her death was known, for her circle of friends and acquaintances was wonderfully large and her rare talent and fascinating presence was known indirectly in all places where she lived abd visited. She was born in Marion, IN, Jan, 1874, thus being in her 19th year; the time of hope, love and promise, and the age when her womanly virtues and tenderness were endearing her to all who met her. As a proof of the general sorrow, the Presbyterian church last Sun afternoon was filled to overflowing with the witnesses of the last rityes and sobbing was heard throuthout the edifice, even the gentlemen present being scarcely able to restrain their feelings. The order of procession after the funeral service was as follows – the entire high school, with the senior class, of which she was a member, in advance; the professors and teachers of the school; the high school alumni; the King’s Daughters, of which society she was a member, followed by miscellaneous friends. Each of the aforesaid bodies presented floral offerings most elegant in design and material. Also the Presbyterian Y P S C. E and Miss Stella Cockrel of Kansas, sent beautiful em -incomplete
