AMBROSE, Jake D., born 23-05-1851, West Virginia, died 21-05-1951, buried Carrollton Cemetery. J. D. “Uncle Jake” Ambrose former well-know resident of Jersey County, died Monday, May 21, just two days before he would have marked his one hundredth birthday anniversary. His death occurred at eleven o’clock in the morning at the home of his wife’s son-in-law, Charles Watts, at Michael following an illness of five months. A representative of the Democrat-News called on the aged man Saturday but his condition at that time did not permit an interview. Mr Ambrose, familiarly known as “Uncle Jake” was born in West Virginia on May 23, 1851, and came to Illinois with his parents in 1865. Most of his life was spent in Jersey and Greene Counties where he engaged in farming and for a time he taught school in Greene County. For several years the aged man made his home in Jerseyville. The aged man was married six times. His last marriage took place on December 31, 1946, when he was married to Mrs. Mary Becker of Calhoun County, who survives him. In addition to his wife he is survived by one daughter, Mrs Charles Schneider of Carrollton. Friends called at the Mehl funeral home in Carrollton until Thursday when funeral rites were held at two o’clock at the Carrollton Baptist Church. Reverend L. Grigg, pastor of the church officiated at the rites and burial was in the Carrollton City cemetery.


AMBROSE, Lloyd H., born 14-02-1918, Gibson, Indiana, died 05-08-1981, buried Fosterburg Cemetery. Services for Lloyd H. Ambrose, 63, 807 Stryker, Jerseyville were conducted Saturday morning at the Bible Baptist Church by the Rev. William Elder with burial in the Fosterburg Cemetery. He died at noon Aug. 5 at Jersey Community Hospital after a lengthy illness. born Feb. 14, 1918 in Gibson County, Ind., he was the son of the late Harry and Pearl Cousert Ambrose. He was a machinist at Baughman Mfg. and also farmed, and was a WWII Army Veteran. His survivors include his wife, Esther Duncan Ambrose; two sons, Thomas Allen Ambrose of East Alton and Roger Ambrose of Spring, TX.; one daughter, Patsy Meeden of Jerseyville; two step-daughters, Fay Steckel of Jerseyville and Jean Lowenstein of East Alton; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild; a half brother, Alton Ambrose of Haubstadt, IN and a sister, Lucille Sanner of Richland Center, Wis. The Bible Baptist Church has been named as a memorial.


AMBROSE, Gerald Lloyd, born 16-12-1946, Jersey County, Illinois, died 30-11-1975, buried Fosterburg Cemetery. The funeral of Gerald Lloyd Ambrose, 28, of 807 Stryker, Jerseyville, was conducted Dec. 3 at the Jacoby Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Workman officiating. Burial was in the Fosterburg Cemetery. He was pronounced dead on arrival at 9 p.m. on Nov. 30 at the Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville. born Dec. 16, 1946 in Jerseyville, he was a son of Lloyd and Esther Duncan Ambrose. He is survived by his parents; two brothers, Allen Ambrose of Rosewood Heights and Roger of Jerseyville; three sisters, Mrs Leo (Patsy) Meeden of Alton, Mrs. Harold (Fay) Steckel of Jerseyville and Mrs Arthur (Jean) Lowenstein of Rosewood Heights; grandmother, Mrs Dora Duncan of Alton and step-grandmother, Mrs Ruth Ambrose of Indiana. A sister preceded him in death.


AMBURG, Elizabeth, born 17-06-1815, North Carolina, died 14-12-1897, buried Scenic Hill Cemetery. Jerseyville Rep. Dec 30, 1897 — Grafton — Mrs. Eliza Amburg died Dec 14, 1897, 82 yrs. born in North Carolina, June 17, 1815 and has lived in Grafton greater part of her life. Married Moses Amburg, May 11, 1833, 7 children, 5 living: Mrs C. P. Stafford, Mrs Thomas Robinson, AB. Amburg, LE. E. Amburg, Jacob Amburg. Funeral with Rev Randle serving. AMBURG, Nona, born 04-04-1888, Jersey County, Illinois, died 23-05-1978, buried Scenic Hill Cemetery. Funeral mass for Nona Amburg, 90, of Grafton was said Thursday at St. Patrick’s church in Grafton with burial in Scenic Hill cemetery. She died at 11:50 p.m. May 23 at Jersey Community hospital. She was born April 4, 1888 in Grafton, a daughter of Jacob and Mary Flynn Amburg. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs Neva Pike of Alton and Mrs Alice Franks of San Carlos, Calif. St. Patrick’s church was designated as a memorial.


AMBURG, Alma C., born Illinois, died 18-01-1990, buried 20-01-1990, Scenic Hill Cemetery. Grafton — Alma C. Amburg, 79, died at 7:42 a.m. Thursday, Jan 18, 1990, at Alton Memorial hospital. She was past matron of Grafton Order of the Eastern Star. Born in Coffeen, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Gertrude (Sparks) Haenny. She married Charles M. Amburg on May 29, 1930, in Coffeen, and he survives. Also surviving are a son, Edward M. Amburg of Grafton; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Julia Lessman of Hillsboro. Preceding her in death were three sisters, Bernice Toberman, Ruth Lewis and Camilla Roberts. Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Grafton United Methodist church, with a service at 7 p.m. by Grafton Order of the Eastern Star. Visitation continues from 1 p.m. Saturday until service time at 2 p.m. at the church with the Rev Dale Wilfong officiating. Burial is in Scenic Hill cemetery in Grafton. Memorials may be given to the church, where she was a member, or Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children, St. Louis.


AMBURG, Charles M., born 09-01-1899, Jersey County, Illinois, died 14-09-1991, buried Scenic Hill Cemetery. Grafton – Charles M. Amburg, 92, died at 7:45 pm Saturday, Sept 14, 1991, at Blu-fountain manor in Godfrey. He was the owner and operator of Ruebel hotel in Grafton and a retired electrician from Local 309. He was a past master of Grafton Full Moon Masonic Lodge 341, 60 year member of Electrical Workers 309, and member of Elks Lodge of Jerseyville, Mississippi Valley Consistory and Ainad Temple. born on Jan 9, 1899, in Grafton, he was a son of the late Lewis Edward and Louise E. (Ruebel) Amburg. He married the former Alma Hoenney on May 29, 1930, in Coffeen. She died Jan 18, 1990. Surviving are a son Edward Amburg of Grafton; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Freida Rippley of Alton. Visitation is from 7 to 9 pm today at Grafton Methodist church, with masonic services at 7:30 pm. Funeral services are at 1 pm Tuesday at the church with the Rev Ray Long officiating. Burial will be in Scenic Hill cemetery in Grafton. Memorials may be made to the church or Shriner’s hospital for Crippled Children in St. Louis. Jacoby-Schroeder funeral home in Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements.


AMES, Gladys, born Jersey County, Illinois, died 19-11-1986. Former Jerseyville resident Gladys (McGowen) Ames, 72, of Peoria, died Nov 19 at a hospital in Peoria. She was born in Jersey county to the late Edward and Pearl McGowen. Survivors include her husband, William Ames; daughter Betty of Peoria; sisters Opal Priest and Dorothy Timpe, both of Jerseyville; brothers Walter McGowen of East Hardin and Lawrence McGowen of Hardin; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


AMES, David H., born 01-05-1792, New York, died 00-11-1893. Jerseyville Rep. – Dec 1, 1893 – David H. Ames born in NY May 1, 1792. At age 10 moved to Jersey and has lived with his daughter, Mrs. Geo. H. Wolfe, 102 yrs. Had never been engaged in business in Jersey. On his 100th birthday he was visited by the GAR post of Jersey. A large family of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren mourn the loss. Funeral from ME church remains to Oneida co., NY for burial. Born in Waterlict, NY. Moved with parents to Steuben, Oneida Co., NY country a wilderness. He was in war of 1812. Cast first vote for Monroe. Married Betsy Norton, Feb 2, 1817. Eleven children: seven sons and four daus. His home was always home for the ministers. He lived on same farm 69 yrs. In 1883 with his wife who died July 16, 1887 in 89 year of her age, came to Illinois. Leaves five sons and two daus. He was a relative of the late Bishop Ames of the ME church.
Jersey County Democrat — May 5, 1892 — in speaking of the 100th birthday of David Ames, it is interesting to note that he was baptised through a hole in the ice in 1823, that he used tobacco for 85 years, but no intoxicants, that in the evening just at twilight on Sunday, he broke forth into song and repeated the well-known hymn commencing with, “the day is past and gone, the shades of night appear.” his father, Nathaniel Ames, a revolutionary veteran and Methodist preacher, had 11 children, his son had the same number. Nathaniel Ames died in 1863 aged 102 yrs.


AMES, Hannah, A., born 08-01-1837, Oneida County, New York, died 30-03-1905. Jerseyville Rep. – April 6, 1905 — died at her home in Jersey, March 30, 1905, Hannah A. Eaton Ames 68 years. born in Canandaigna, Oneida Co., NY, Jan 8, 1837. Moved to Oregon, Wis. In 1846, married Jason H. Ames Sept 2, 1855. He died Jan 27, 1901, three children: Addie M. who died Feb 26, 1862, Carrie A. Holmes living here, Edwin S. Ames in Hot Springs, SD.


AMES, Henry Semple, died 00-01-1916. Jersey Co. Democrat – Jan 20, 1916 — Henry Semple Ames, vice president of Mississippi Valley Trust Co. of St. Louis. He died at home in St. Louis. He was the son of Lucy V. Semple Ames, owner of Notch Cliff near Elsah. He leaves mother, brother, Edgar of Seattle, Washington, two sisters, Mrs Mary Ames Cushman and Mrs Henry S. Turner of St. Louis.


AMES, Betsy, born 07-10-1799, Herkimer County, New York, died 00-07-1887. Jersey Co. Democrat – July 21, 1887 — Mrs David H. Ames died Sat evening. Born in Herkimer Co., NY, Oct 7, 1799, maiden name being Betsy Norton. Married by Rev Joel Sizer to David H. Ames, who survives, Feb 21, 1817, 70 years of married life. Lived in one house on their farm in Steuben, Oneida Co. NY where all that is mortal of Mrs Ames has been taken for burial. Her son-in-law and her husband left with the remains Monday. Her husband born in 1792 and is a pensioner, having served in the war of 1812. His father, Nathaniel Ames died at age of 102 and was a pensioner, having served in the Revolutionary war. David H. voted first for Monroe, and right on down the line for J. Q. Adams, Jackson, Van Buren, Polk, Taylor, Filmore, Pierce, Buchanan, Lincoln, Johnson, Grant, Hayes, Garfield, and Arthur. He is proud of being an old time Democrat as he is of being a modern Republican. Taken from Globe Democrat written the day before the death of Mrs. Ames. David H. Ames born at Watervicet, NY, May 1, 1792. Spent most of his life in native state and lived 70 years on one farm. Seventy years with one wife and 70 years member of ME church. Married Feb 2, 1817 to Betsy Norton. Her grandfather, Capt. Nathaniel Norton an officer in Revolutionary war and afterwards a minister in Baptist denomination… lived to be 100 and preached until he was 92.


ANDERSON, Michael, born 00-00-1950, died 30-03-1978. The body of Jerseyville attorney Michael Anderson was found at approximately 10:20 am today, March 30 inside his running auto at his rural home west of Jerseyville. Death was apparently accidental, according to Sheriff Frank Yocum. Further investigation is pending an autopsy. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The 28 year old Anderson was the son of Mr and Mrs L. L. Anderson of Jerseyville. He attended elementary and secondary schools in Jersey county. He had a degree in law enforcement administration from Western Illinois University and served an internship with the West Central Illinois Law Enforcement Commission. He served also as director of the Region 12 Law and Justice Commission and also worked for the Illinois Attorney General. He graduated in June 1976 with a law degree from John Marshall Law school in Chicago. After an unsuccessful bid in the 1976 primary election for the state’s attorney nomination, Anderson entered the private practice of law with the office of Moore and Goetten.


ANDERSON, Mrs. Frank, died 00-02-1912, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Jerseyville Republican – Feb 15, 1912 — Funeral of Mrs Frank Anderson 31 yrs who died in East St Louis, held from Oak Grove Cemetery, was a daughter of Albert Niles and formerly lived here.


ANDERSON, Hazel, died 06-02-1971. Mrs Ina Fry of Jerseyville received word of the death of Mrs Hazel Anderson, 78, of Folsom, California, which occurred in a Folsom Rest Home February 6th. Funeral rites and burial were in California. A native of Jerseyville, she was the former Hazel Sandidge and had attended the local schools. Her husband was the late William Anderson. She was the Mother-in-law of Mrs Fry’s daughter, Mrs. Frank (Ruth) Anderson.


ANDERSON, Imogene, born Jersey County, Illinois, died 03-11-1989, buried 06-11-1989, Oak Grove Cemetery. Jerseyville – Imogene Anderson, 74, died at 2:24 pm Friday, Nov 3, 1989 at Christian Hospital Northeast, St. Louis county. She was a registered nurse. Born in Jerseyville, she was the daughter of the late Hershel Dick and Ethel (Quinn) King. On May 2, 1937, in Oak Park, she married Rupert M. Anderson, he survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Andrea Juricic of Governors Island, NY; a son, Dr. Richard Anderson of Rye, NH; three grand children; and a brother, Dick King of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Visitation is from 4 to 7 pm today at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are at 11 am Monday with the Rev. Dan Harry officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the First Methodist Church of Jerseyville, where she was a member.


ANDERSON, Charles M. born 21-12-1908, Jersey County, Illinois, died 00-12-1968, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Charles M. Anderson of 307 Lincoln Avenue, Jerseyville, died at six-thirty o’clock Sunday morning at the Jersey Community Hospital where he had been a patient the past three weeks. Visitation hours were held at the Gubser Funeral Home where services were held at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon. Reverend Louis Purcell officiated and burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mr Anderson had been a machinist at A. O. Smith Company in Granite City until ill health forced his retirement sometime ago. He was born in Otterville, December 21, 1908, a son of the late John and Sarah Cope Anderson. He would have been sixty years old on Sarurday of this week. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs Annabelle Anderson; one son, Warren C. Anderson of Jerseyville; two brothers, George of Trevor, Wis., and John of Chicago; one sister, Mrs. Oscar Lundell of Cedar Lake, Indiana; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, John D. Anderson.


ANDERSON, Maria, 00-12-1880. Republican Examiner – Dec., 1880 – The old pioneers will remember Mrs Maria Anderson, wife of Mebane Anderson, who lived here thirty years ago. Her death is recorded in the Morrisonville Times. She came to Jerseyville in 1834, when there were but three houses in the place, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of this city, her husband being one of the ruling elders. Her husband died Aug 22, 1873.


ANDERSON, Robert Lee, born 28-12-1951, Madison County, Illinois, died 00-07-1960, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Robert Lee (Bobby) Anderson, nine-year old son of L. L. and Wilma Francis Anderson of Fieldon Road, Jerseyville, died at the family home early Friday morning following an illness which had extended over a period of six years. At the onset of his illness the youngster underwent major surgery and from time to time since then has undergone additional operations. Despite his ill health, Bobby attended West Elementary School where his chief concern was keeping up scholastically with his classmates. He would have been a fourth grade student this next term. The youngster was born in Alton, December 28, 1951, and his age at the time of death was nine years, six months and sixteen days. In addition to his parents, Bobby is survived by one brother, Michael Wayne; his paternal grandparents, Mr and mrs Troy Anderson of Marble Hill, Missouri, and his maternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs Clarence Francis of Lutesville, Missouri. Friends called at the Gubser Funeral Home after four o’clock Saturday afternoon. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church at two o’clock Sunday afternoon, July 16, with Reverend Harold Lane officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery.


ANDERSON, Dimple Dee, died 31-03-1983, buried Kane Cemetery. Services for Dimple Dee Anderson of rural Kane were held Saturday afternoon at the Kane Baptist Church of which she was a member with the Rev. Clyde Meyers of Carrollton and the Rev. Peter Ely, pastor of Kane Baptist, officiating. She died at 7 am March 31 at Christian Hosptial Northeast. The Greene County native was a daughter of the late Pleasant and Pearl Hardwick Morris. Her husband, Lloyd “Shorty” Anderson, died Jan 31, 1973. She is survived by one son, Lloyd Richard Anderson sr., and a daughter, Betty C. Green, both of Kane; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one brother, Harmon Morris of Jerseyville, and a sister, Mabel Mereda Grizzle of Carrollton. Burial was in Kane Cemetery.


ANDERSON, Howard B., born 02-07-1911, Greene County, Illinois, died 27-02-1983, buried Borlin Cemetery. Howard B. Anderson, 71, 104 McGill, died at 10:22 a.m. Feb 27, at his residence after a lengthy illness. He retired in 1973 as a welder from Ford Motor Co. after 25 years service. The veteran was born July 2, 1911 in Roodhouse, a son of William and Ethel Zerby Anderson. He was a member of UAW Local 325 and Boilermakers Lodge 363 East St Louis. His survivors are his wife, Lorraine Wood Anderson whom he married July 10, 1956; stepdaughters, Beverly Greenlee, Jerseyville, Henrietta Klunk, Kane, Dottie May Koenig, Jerseyville; four step-grandchildren; one brother, Herschel Anderson, Canyon, Tex.; four sisters, Permille Anderson, Alton, Agnes Hawkins, Lincoln, Calif., Lenora Mae Belt, Chicago, Hallie Marie Cook, Carrollton, nieces and nephews. One brother preceded him in death. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gubser Funeral Home by the Revs. Simon A. Simon and Donald Sherman with burial in the Borlin Cemetery southwest of Carrollton. The First Presbyterian Church of which he was a member has been designated as a memorial. Visitation from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at Gubser Funeral Home where Masonic rites will be conducted at 7:30 by Wood River Lodge 1062.


ANDREWS, Violet G., born Illinois, died 00-10-1982, buried Rosedale Cemetery. Violet G. Andrews, 79, of Jerseyville, died at 5:45 P.M. Thursday at Jersey Community Hospital. born in Worden, daughter of the late Frank and Grace (Cornelius) Ghoop, she was a practical nurse. She was married to the late Charles Andrews. He died in 1969. Surviving are on son Lester Lohse of Lansdowne, Maryland; two stepsons, William (Pat) Andrews of Jacksonville, Fla., and Herschel Andrews of Jerseyville; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 P.M., Saturday and Sunday at Gubser Funeral Home where funeral services will be conducted at 2 P.M. Monday with the Rev. R. E. George officiating. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery in Rosedale, IL. A charity of one’s choice has been designated as a memorial.


ANDREWS, Charles William, died 00-04-1970, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Funeral services for Charles William (Tot) Andrews, 70, of this city were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at Jacoby Brothers funeral Home where visitation hours were held after 3:00 p.m. Monday. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Jersey Community Hospital Saturday Morning at 10:25 o’clock. His death was unexpected. Rev. Leonard Todd of Moro conducted the rites with interment in Oak Grove Cemetery. A carpenter by trade, Mr. Andrews was born in Jersey County.


ANDREWS. Jerseyville – Funeral arrangements are pending at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home here, for Charles Andrews, 71, who was pronounced dead on arrival at 10:25 a.m. today at Jersey Community Hospital. The retired carpenter lived at 210 E. Carpenter St., Jerseyville. Surviving are his widow, the former Helen Thorpe; two sons, Herschel of Jerseyville and William of Jacksonville, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Vera Foster of Wood River; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. ANDREWS, Phoebe Elizabeth, born 25-07-1884, Jersey County, Illinois, died 27-07-1974, buried Asbury Cemetery. A memorial service for Miss Phoebe Eliza Andrews, a member of one of the pioneer families of the Brighton area, was held at 2 P.M. on Sunday, Aug 11, at the Methodist Church with the Rev Dick Keim officiating. Her death occurred on July 27 at La Jolla, Calif., Burial was in Asbury Cemetery, formerly a part of the Andrews estate. She was born July 25, 1884, the daughter of the late John Edward and Emma Trabue Andrews. She attended Brighton area schools and was a graduate of Monticello College in Godfrey (now Lewis and Clark Junior College). Following graduation she served as school librarian and alumni secretary for many years. In 1958 Miss Andrews sold the ancestral home north of Brighton and took up residence at the Casa de Manana Methodist Home in La Jolla, Calif. She remained active in retirement and was a member of the Woman’s Club, serving as president for several years. Miss Andrews was a charter member of the Brighton Civic League and in 1916, was instrumental in organizing the Brighton Memorial Library, serving as the first librarian. Until moving to California she was an active member of St Paul United Methodist Church Brighton. She organized the Up Streamer Sunday School Class, serving as the Sunday School teacher for many years. Warner Funeral Home in Brighton was in charge of arrangements.


ANDREWS, Catherine, born 00-00-1808, died 25-11-1876. Jerseyville Republican – Dec 1, 1876 — Catherine Andrews died at her home one mile southwest of Jerseyville, Saturday, November 25, 1876. She was 68 years old.


ANDREWS, Pearl L., born 00-00-1903, died 15-06-1945, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Jerseyville — Pearl L. Andrews, 83, died Monday, Aug 4, 1986 at Greenwood Manor Nursing Home in Jerseyville. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Nettie Watson. Her husband, John E. Andrews, died June 15, 1945. Grandnieces survive. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 P.M. Thursday at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements.

Andrews, a guard at the Western Cartridge Company in East Alton and a former member of the Jerseyville police force for twelve years, died suddenly Friday afternoon, June 15 at 4:30 of a heart attack. Mr Andrews was the son of the late John and Alice Murphy Andrews and was born at Rosedale on September 1, 1893. He was a veteran of World War I having entered the services on September 23, 1917. He served overseas and received his discharge on July 9, 1919. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Pearl Andrews and two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Kohntopp, and Mrs. Edith Morgan, both of Grafton. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Chapel on Monday afternoon June 18 at 2 P.M. with the Rev. J. T. Lillard officiating. Military rites were under the auspices of Worthey Post No. 492, American Legion. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery.


ANDREWS, Louis William, born Jersey County, Illinois, died 00-05-1975, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Louis William Andrews, 66, of 204 N. Liberty, Jerseyville, died at 6 a.m. today at Jersey Community Hospital. He was born in Jersey County and was employed as a machinist. Surviving are his widow, the former Lily Forbes, whom he married in 1933 in Fieldon; five daughters, Mrs. Dallas (Mae) Miller, Miss Shirley Andrews and Mrs. Kenneth (Jane) Kitson, all of Jerseyville, Mrs. Ronald (Elsie) Davenport of Rosewood Heights and Mrs Harry (Dorothy) Preston of Marshall, MO.; eight grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs Mildred Ontis of Billings, Okla. Services will be conducted at 1:30 P.M. Thursday at the Gospel Assembly Church with the Rev. Harry Frazier and the Rev Paul Lynn officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Slim Talk Research Program for the American Cancer Society had been suggested as a memorial.

James Frederick Andrews 14 years old, eldest son of Mr and Mrs James Andrews, of Otter Creek landing fell through ice and drowned while skating on Otter Creek. Angel a World War I veteran, was a member of the Jerseyville Ameraican Legion Post and World War I Veterans. His survivors are his widow Mrs. Ida M. Pickett Angel; two son, James E. Angel of Alton and Francis L. Angel of Jerseyville; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Powers and Mrs. Marcella Freshour of Jerseyville; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. ANGLIN, Claude (Jim) Eugene, born 23-01-1924, Alexander County, died 16-02-1977, buried 19-02-1977, Oak Grove Cemetery. Final rites for Claude (Jim) Eugene Anglin, 53, of Jerseyville will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 19 at Jacoby Bros Funeral Home with the Rev. R.E. George officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. His death occurred at 7:50 p.m. on Feb. 16 at Jersey Care Center. He had been in ill health for some time. Anglin, a deputy sheriff, had worked in the Jersey County Sheriff’s office for eight years. He was born in Alexander County on Jan. 23, 1924, a son of Chance E. and Ruth C. Ireland Anglin. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Ruth C. Christianson of Jerseyville, aunts and uncles. His father preceded him in death. Friends may call at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home after 4 p.m. Friday. ANSELL, Theodore, Sr., born 02-12-1895, Calhoun County, Illinois, died 08-10-1966, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Funeral services for Theodore Ansell, sr., retired Jerseyville farmer and veteran of World War I, were held Monday afternoon at two o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. M. Edwards Breed, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church, officiated and burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Services were in charge of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation hours were at the Funeral Home. Mr. Ansell died Saturday morning, October 8, at 3:05, in Jacksonville where he had been hospitalized for eighteen days. His death followed and extended period of ill health. A son of the late John and Ora Hunter Ansell, he was born at Kampsville on December 2, 1895, and his age at the time of death was 70 years, 10 months and 6 days. Mr. Ansell was engaged in farming south of Jerseyville for many years. He was a member of the A.F. & A.M., Royal Arch Masons, American Legion and Presbyterian Church. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Helen Shriver Ansell, one son, Theodore Ansell, jr., of Jerseyville, two daughters, Mrs Ray (Gwen) Sweetman of Jerseyville . . . . . .


ANSELL, Helen Elizabeth, born 08-08-1892, Illinois, died 24-04-1979, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. The funeral of Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Ansell, 86, of 410 Fletcher, Jerseyville was held Thursday morning at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home with the Rev. M. Edwards Breed officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. She died at 6:35 p.m. April 24 at Greenwood Manor, Jerseyville. born in Hoopeston, Ill. Aug. 8, 1892, she was a daughter of Alonzo and Ellen Trutsman Shriver and had been a teacher. She is survived by one son, Theodore Ansell of Jerseyville; two daughters, Gwen Sweetman of Jerseyville and Eunice Kusak of Decatur; one sister, Lutie Watterud of Escondido, Calif.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her husband, Theodore Ansell sr., died in 1966. The First Presbyterian Church has been designated as a memorial.


ANSELL, Bert, born 13-08-1871, Calhoun County, Illinois, died 31-03-1951, buried 03-04-1951, Summit Grove Cemetery. Bert Ansell, Calhoun orchardist and husband of Mrs. Ora Ansell of Jerseyville, died Saturday, March 31, at three p.m., at the Illini Hospital in Pittsfield where he had submitted to surgery. Mr. Ansell had been failing health for some time. The decedent was one of seven children born to the late John J. and Nancy Ann Ansell. He was born at the old Ansell homestead at Summit Grove in Calhoun County on August 13, 1871, and had spent his entire lifetime on the same farm. Mr. Ansell was united in marriage to Mrs. Ora Hunter Ansell in April, 1910. No children were born to this union. As a young man he became a member of the Presbyterian Church at Summit Grove, and was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs Ora Ansell of Jerseyville, five step-children, Theodore and Dorothy Ansell of Jerseyville, Anne Ansell of Chicago and Jake and Ellsworth Ansell of Kampsville. He also leaves four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, April 3, at two o’clock at the Presbyterian Church in Kampsville. Reverend L. D. Stone of Brighton officiated at the rites and interment was in the Summit Grove cemetery.


ANTHONY, Jacob, died 21-12-1890. Jersey Democrat – Dec. 21, 1890. East Newbern – died at his daughter’s home in Nebraska, Mr. Jacob Anthony, brother-in-law of Mrs. Newton Burley. Mr. Anthony resided in this county some years ago. Mr. Anthony was a carpenter by trade, and built many barns and houses for people here, and in 1876 built a fine large barn for Mr. Newton Burley of this place. Mr. Anthony moved from Jersey county to Sangamon county, where he lived for a number of years, when he moved to Nebraska, where he died. The deceased leaves a wife and four children to mourn.


ANTOBUS, Myrtle Crull, born 04-06-1910, Jersey County, Illinois, died 10-12-1977, buried Rosedale Cemetery. The funeral of Mrs. Myrtle Crull Antrobus, 67, of 416 Brown St., East Alton, formerly of Jersey County, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Dec. 13 from Gubser Funeral Home. The Rev. Earl Clagg will officiate and burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery. Her death occurred at 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 10 at Firmin Desloge Hospital in St. Louis. She was born June 4, 1910 in Jersey County, a daughter of Harry and Alma Suddeth Legate. She is survived by her husband, Louis H. Antrobus whom she married Jan. 22, 1976. Other survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Geneva) Burklow of Jerseyville and Mrs. Floyd (Thelma) Shaw of Moro; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Howard Legate of El Paso, Texas and Walter Legate of San Diego, Calif. Her first husband, Charles Edward Crull, died in September, 1975 and a son, Charles Orville Crull, died in 1934. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12. The Heart Fund has been designated as a memorial.


ANTRAE, Emma, born Jersey County, Illinois, died 26-04-1982, buried Fieldon Cemetery. Jerseyville – Emma Antrae, 94, died at 6:26 a.m. Sunday at Garnet Chateau nursing home. Born in Jersey county, daughter of the late Joseph and Katherine (Bernius) Andris, she married Alvin Antrae who died Jan. 9, 1951. Surviving are a son, Stewart of Alton; a daughter, Marie Geisler of Jerseyville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Jacoby Brothers funeral home. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Peace United Church of Christ with the Rev. Robert Broeder officiating, and burial will be in Fieldon cemetery. The church has been named as a memorial.

ANTRAE, William Henry, born 12-11-1828, Germany, died 23-11-1911. Wm. Henry Antrae died at home 3 miles west of Fieldon on Nov. 23, 83 yrs., born in Germany, Nov 12, 1828, came to America at age of 25. Married Anna Haller Nov 3, 1873, seven children, three died in infancy, his son Julius died Nov 22, 1911.


ANTRAE, Julius William, born 07-12-1888, Jersey County, Illinois, died 22-11-1911. Julius William Antrae, youngest son of Anna M. and Wm. Antrae, born on a farm west of Fieldon on Dec. 7, 1888. 23 years old, died just 2 weeks after his mothers death, his father died, 21 hours later he died. He leaves on brother, Alvin, and two sisters, Miss Theresa and Mrs. Minnie Pegue.


ANTROBUS, Augusta Emma, born 18-10-1888, Jersey County, Illinois, died 10-08-1972, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Funeral services were held Monday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home for Mrs. Augusta Emma Antrobus, 83, of 203 Fremont Street, Jerseyville. Reverend Louis Huber of St. Louis, former pastor of Peace Evangelical Church in Jerseyville, officiated and burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Antrobus, a daughter of the late John and Amelia Knolp Gerson, was born in Jersey County on October 18, 1888. Her survivors are two sons, Francis L. Groppel of Jerseyville and Morris W. Groppel of Melbourne Beach, Florida; one daughter, Mrs. Florence Tucker of Jerseyville; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and four brothers, Louis Gerson of Jerseyville, Albert Gerson of Monroe, Louisiana, William Gerson, Brussels, and Charles Gerson of Godfrey. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Blaeser; and two brothers, Fred and Henry Gerson. Following the death of her husband, John Groppel, she was united in marriage with James C. Antrobus who also preceded her in death.

Crull who died 14 Sep 1975. She then married Louis H. Antrobus on 22 Jan 1976. Surviving besides her husband, Louis, are two daughters, Geneva Busklow of Jerseyville and Thelma Shaw of Moro; four grandchildren, two great grandchildren and two brothers; Howard Legate of ElPaso TX and Walter Legate of San Diego CA. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 and 7 to 9 pm today at Gubser Funeral Home, Jerseyville, where services will be 1pm Tuesday with Rev. Earl Clagg officiating. Burial will be in the Rosedale Cemetery, Rosedale IL and the heart fund has been designated as a memorial.

ARCHER, Minnie E., born 21-08-1882, Illinois, died 04-03-1971, buried Shipman Cemetery. Final rites for Mrs. Minnie E. Archer, 88, of Shipman were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Jacoby-Wise funeral home in Shipman with interment in the Shipman Cemetery. Her death occurred late Thursday afternoon at the Woodlawn Acres Nursing Home in Carlinville. She was born in Woodburn August 21, 1882. Her survivors are a son, Kenneth of Shipman; one daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Weiss of Union Town, Pa.; one grandson; three great-granddaughters; and three sisters, Mrs. Mae Welch and Mrs. Louise Fleming, both of Bunker Hill, and Mrs. Lottie Kahl of Shipman. Her husband, Jesse C. Archer, preceded her in death.

ARCHER, Margaret, died 30-11-1980. Word has been received in Jerseyville of the death Nov. 30 of Miss Margaret Archer, longtime teacher of English at Jerseyville East Elementary School. She died at a nursing home at Farmington, Mo., where she had been a patient for several years. Miss Archer came to Jerseyville Grade School (now East Elementary) in 1945 after teaching at Elvina, Mo. Besides teaching English, she was sponsor of the Indian Yell, the school newspaper. For many years she was a counsellor and business manager at Camp Red Bud, a summer camp for Jersey County pupils. She retired to Farmington, Mo., her home town, in 1968, and lived there until her death. Funeral services were held in Farmington, Dec 2.


ARCHER, Lawrence E., born 26-03-1911, Missouri, died 17-11-1979, buried St. Francis Cemetery. Funeral Mass for Lawrence E. Archer, 68, of 403 S. He died at 8 p.m. Nov. 17 at Alton Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was born March 26, 1911 at Conception, MO., a son of the late Edward and Camille Villing Archer and was retired from auto parts sales work in Alton. His survivors are his wife, the former Marian Miller; two daughters, Mrs. Peggy Jane Stevenson, Kankakee and Mrs. Patricia Ann Jilg of Hialeah, Fla., six grandchildren and three great-grandsons. Five brothers, Joe Archer of Rosewood Heights, Ralph and Tommy of Maryville, Mo., Hubert of Conception Junction, Mo. and Donald of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one sister, Mary Luke of Conception Junction. His death occurred at 1:35 p.m. on Jan. 20 at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, after a long illness. He was a restaurant owner. born March 15, 1886 in Tripoli, Greece, he was a son of Nicholas H. and Anastasia Arger. His wife, Afento Arger, preceded him in death. He is survived by two daughters, Anastasia H. and Eugenia H. Arger of Jerseyville and two sons, Nicholas H. Arger of Jerseyville and Dr. Peter H. Arger of Narberth, Pa.; four grandchildren. His wife, parents two brothers and a daughter preceded him in death. Visitation was held at Jacoby Funeral Home.


ARGER, Afento, born 20-02-1903, Greece, died 18-07-1971, buried St. Matthews Cemetery. Funeral services for Mrs. Harry (Afento) Arger, 68, of this city will be held this afternoon (Thursday) at 2:00 o’clock at the St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 4967 Forest Park Boulevard, St. Louis, with Father Constantine J. Andrews of St. Louis officiating. Her death occurred early Monday morning in Barnes Hospital. Interment will be in St. Matthews Cemetery, St. Louis. She was born February 20, 1903 in Piraeus, Greece, the daughter of Peter W. and Eugenia Aronis Khlantzos. The Argers were in business here for many years operating at on time the Jerseyville Candy Kitchen and later Greenleaf Inn. She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Miss Anastasia H. Arger and Miss Eugenia H. Arger of Jerseyville; two sons, Nicholas H. Arger of Jerseyville and Dr. Peter H. Arger of Narberth, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. M. E. Chalious of Creve Couer, Missouri, and Mrs. Henry J. Nebuloni of Creve Couer; and one brother, John Khlantzos, also of Creve Couer. Visitation hours were held after 3 p.m. Tuesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home and at the Krieghauser Funeral Home, St. Louis, Wednesday.


ARKEBAUER, George, born 01-12-1839, Germany, died 02-11-1928. Jersey County News – Nov. 8, 1928. Last surviving member of Co. F, 14th Illinois, George Arkebauer, last private of company F, 14th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War, answered the final roll call at his home in Jerseyville, Nov 2nd. He was 88 yrs of age. Funeral from Gubser Chapel. Rev. Kirchner. Leaves one step daughter, Mrs Edward Sunderland of Jerseyville. born in Germany Dec. 1st, 1839. When the Civil War broke out, Arkebauer enlisted for service, being then 18 years of age. Enlisted at Jacksonville and was stationed with his company at Camp Duncan, Jacksonville, Ill. until latter part of June 1961. In July his regiment moved to Quincy and from thence into Missouri where it was assigned for a time to guard duty. The first engagement of this regiment was with a column of Confederates at Moneyville, MO. the Confederate were defeated, and their leader, Gen Green, made prisoner. The regiment then participated in the campaign against rebel forces under Gen Price. In 1862 the regiment joined General Grant in the campaign against Fort Donelson and later participated in the seige of Vicksburg. Also in seige of Corinth. When General Wm. T. Sherman with one hundred thousand men started on the memorable march to the sea, the 14th Ill. was in the ranks, and Arkebauer and the members of his company saw service all through that campaign. During the four years and four months of hard service, the regiment marched 4490 miles, traveled by rail 2330 miles and by river 4490 miles, making a total of 11,670 miles. It was mustered out at Fort Leavenworth, Kans. Sept. 16th 1865, and went to Springfield, Ill. where it was mustered out.


ARKEBAUER, Amanda, died 28-06-1921, buried Woodbury Cemetery. Mrs. Amanda Arkebauer, wife of George Arkebauer, aged 82 years, 2 months and 11 days, died at her home 519 East Prairie Street, in this city, Tuesday, June 28, 1921 at 10:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held from the residence, Thursday, June 30th, at 1:30 p.m., Rev. Livesay of Emrick, N. D. and Mrs. Elmer E. Day of Rockford, Ill. These children knew a loving mother’s care only a few short years as their mother died at Licinge, Kansas, May 10, 1872. Mr. Armstrong again married to Rebecca Price, Dec. 6, 1874 at Piasa, Ill. Four children; Charles of Kemper, Arthur of Benld, Ill., Roy of Piasa, Ill., and Mrs. Elmer Gilworth of Wakins Prairie, Ill. United with ME church at Fidelity. Later with Congregational Church at Kemper. Funeral from home, Rev. Cross, Burial in Piasa Cemetery.

Armstrong, 88, formerly of Medora, died at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Manor Nursing Home. born in Medora, a daughter of the late John and Mary (Tober) Lillis, she married Roy Armstrong on August 1, 1908. He died March 18, 1962. Surviving are a daughter, Hazel Kirsch of Jerseyville; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marie Smith of Brighton. ARMSTRONG, Leora F., born 01-06-1927, Oklahoma, died 08-07-1979, buried Valhalla Park. The funeral of Leora F. Armstrong, 67, of 502 Mulberry, Godfrey, formerly of Jerseyville, was conducted Wednesday afternoon at Gent Funeral Home by the Rev. Les Johnson. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park. She died at 10:47 p.m. July 8 at St. Luke’s Hospital, St. Louis after a short illness. She was employed for 20 years for Food Services at Alton Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1963. She was born in Jersey County, a daughter of the late Walter and Elizabeth Franz Miller, and married Hardin Armstrong June 1, 1927 in Bartlesville, Okla. Her survivors are her husband; five daughters, Dorothy Wilburn of Londell, Mo., Artie Thompson, Dow, Joy Woolsey and Berdella Baker, both of Alton and Adelene Walz of Jerseyville; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

ARMSTRONG, Earl, born Greene County, Illinois, died 15-10-1989, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Jerseyville – Earl Armstrong, 86, died at 6:55 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, 1989, at Jersey Community Hospital, Jerseyville. He retired as a self-employed farmer in 1978. born in Greene County, he was the son of the late Luther and Lizzie Lu (Stocks) Armstrong. On Sept. 7, 1926, in Carrollton, he married the former Ruth Brainerd. She died May 17, 1977. Surviving are four daughters, Doris Roberson of Bethalto, Norma Delp of Blue Grass, Iowa, Georgia Foster of Prescott, Ariz., and Deanna Harper of Davenport, Iowa; four sons, Fred Armstrong of Grafton, Kenneth Armstrong of Roy, Washington, Franklin “Cork” and Arthur Armstrong, both of Jerseyville; 24 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mildred Horner of Chicago. He was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers. Visitation is from 4 to 9 Tuesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Simon A. Simon officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be made to Jersey Community Hospital.

ARMSTRONG, Mrs. Charles, died 07-11-1922. Mrs. Otis Voorhees received a telephone message Tuesday afternoon, Nov 7th, announcing the death of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Charles Armstrong, at 1 o’clock that afternoon. Mrs Armstrong is survived by the husband who was born and reared in Jersey County, and one little girl, Lucille three years old, who has been cared for during her mother’s illness, by her aunt, Mrs. Fred Wilcox. Mrs. Armstrong has been ill since June, and her death has been expected for some time. Mrs. Wilcox and little Lucille went to St. Louis, Wednesday Morning, and Mr. Voorhees and Mr. Wilcox went down Thursday morning to attend the funeral which was held from the home that afternoon 1t 1:30.

She was born on Dec. 22, 1907 in Grafton, a daughter of George A. and Nona Morgan Brainerd. Her survivors are her husband, Earl Armstrong whom she married Sept. 2, 1925; four sons, Fred and Arthur Armstrong of Grafton; Kenneth of Tacoma, Wash. and Franklin of Jerseyville; Four daughters, Mrs. James (Doris) Robinson of Bethalto, Mrs. Henry (Norma) Delp of Blue Grass, Iowa, Mrs. Kenneth (Georgia) Foster of Milan, and Mrs. Gerald (Deanna) Harper of Davenport, Iowa; 26 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Brainerd, and a sister, Mrs. Hattie Thompson of Grafton. His death occurred on Feb 9. He was born July 25, 1896 in Kampsville a son of Eldon S. and Alice Scott Armstrong. Armstrong was a member of the Kampsville Presbyterian Church, IOOF Chapter 4, IOOF Encampment, the Canton, Jacksonville Lodge 570 AF and AM, American Legion Post 279, World War I Barracks, and Order of Eastern Star Chapter 358. His survivors are his widow, Margaret A. Marietta Armstrong; a stepson, William L. Marietta of Mascoutah; three brothers, Reubin Armstrong and Hugh Armstrong of Jerseyville and Charles Armstrong of Biloxi, Miss.; and three sisters, Dorothy Stelbrink of Hardin, Flora Watson of Brentwood, Mo., and Dora Bligh of Jerseyville; two grand-daughters; one great-granddaughter. Her husband, Roy Armstrong, died March 18, 1962. She is survived by a daughter, Hazel Kirsch of Jerseyville; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marie Smith of Brighton. Two brothers preceded her in death.


ARMSTRONG, Helen Skinner, died 22-09-1972. Mrs. Helen Skinner Armstrong of Elsah died at 2:00 a.m. on September 22 at her residence on Valley Street. She was a housekeeper at Principia College and was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Elsah. Her daughter, Mrs. Helen P. Richards of Collinsville and one grandson are survivors. After cremation, a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Miss Armstrong was born Sept. 18, 1894 in Jersey County, the daughter of Harry and Susan Young Armstrong. She died at 10:30 a.m. Sept 17 at Robings Manor Nursing Home in Brighton. Miss Armstrong She was a teacher in various schools throughout the area before her retirement. She was a 50-year member of the Medora Order of Eastern Star. Surviving is one brother, Harry Y. Armstrong of Springfield. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Angie Reed and Hattie Voorhees.


ARNOLD, Anna E., born 03-10-1906, Calhoun County, Illinois, died 28-03-1977, buried Scenic Hill Cemetery. Funeral Mass for Mrs. Anna E. Arnold, 70, of Grafton was celebrated this morning, March 31, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Grafton with the Rev. Patrick Morrow celebrant. Interment was in Scenic Hill Cemetery. Her death occurred at 11:45 a.m. on March 28 at Jersey Community Hospital. She was born in Calhoun County on Oct. 3, 1906, a daughter of Gerhardt and Elizabeth Gerdesmeyer Cappel. Her husband, Martin Arnold, died on Jan. 11 this year. The Arnolds had operated Arnold’s Store in Grafton for many years. Her survivors are one daughter, Mrs Evelyn Rosenthal of Peoria; a son, Vincent Arnold of Grafton; five grandchildren; her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Cappel of Hardin; one sister, Mrs. Henry (Mae) Schoberend of Golden Eagle, Paul of Godfrey, Charles of East Alton and Jerome Cappel of LaGrange. Visitation was held at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home in Grafton where a prayer service was read Wednesday evening.


ARNOLD, Fred W., born 18-04-1906, Calhoun County, Illinois, died 17-07-1959, buried 20-07-1959, St. Mary’s Cemetery. Funeral services were held at St. Patrick’s Church in Grafton Monday morning, July 20, at nine o’clock for Fred W. Arnold of Grafton whose death occurred Friday, July 17, at 11:45 a.m., in an Alton Hospital. Requiem Mass was celebrated by Father Michael Sheehy and interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery at Brussels. Prior to the final rites friends called at Jacoby Brothers funeral Home in Jerseyville. Mr. Arnold was a retired acid foreman at the Illinois Powder Company. He was a son of the late Lawrence J., and Johanna Frey Arnold and was born April 18, 1906, in Calhoun county. His age at the time of death was fifty-three years, two months and twenty-nine days. Surviving the decedent are five sisters, Mrs. Andrew Robeen of Hardin, Mrs. Albert Keehner of New Haven, Mo., Mrs. Vern Osborne of Golden Eagle, Mrs. Edith Plummer of Grafton and Mrs. Robert Redd of Alton, and three brothers……

Paul Edward Arnold, 63, president and manager of the Grafton Telephone Co., died at 10:35 p.m. on Dec. 4 at Firmin Desloge Hospital in St. Louis. born June 15, 1911, he was a son of Lawrence and Mary Johanna Frey. Mr Arnold had served as alderman in the City of Grafton for 16 years and was a trustee of the Quarry-Elsah Fire District. He had also served as Quarry Township Auditor. His survivors include his widow, the former Gertrude Pohlman; one son, Paul W. Arnold of Grafton; four daughters, Mrs Wilbur (Mary) Church of Grafton, Mrs William (Susan) Hedger of Independence, Mo., Mrs Dann (Kathleen) Berthoux of Springfield, and Miss Barbara J. Arnold, at home; seven grandchildren; a brother, Martin Arnold of Grafton; and five sisters, Mrs. Robert Red_ and Mrs Pauline Keehner, both of Alton, Mrs. Edith Plummer of Grafton, Mrs Vern Osborne of Golden Eagle and Mrs Andrew Robeen of Kampsville. She is survived by one son, Harold Hodge of Grafton; three daughters, Sarah Chestnut of Bunker Hill, Vera Womack and Shirley Armstrong of Grafton; two sisters, Lilly Hausman of Alton and Ida Mae Davis of Bunker Hill; 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

ARNOLD, Maude Susan, born 29-08-1891, Jersey County, Illinois, died 23-02-1957, buried 26-02-1957, Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Maude Susan Arnold, widow of Josef J. Arnold of Jerseyville, died at seven forty-five o’clock Saturday evening, February 23, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Arnold where she had been moved on Wednesday. Mrs. Arnold had been ill for some time and had been hospitalized at the Jersey Community Hospital for several weeks. For many years Mrs. Arnold assisted her late husband in the bakery business in Jerseyville. The decedent was a daughter of the late John and Susan Sapp Walker, and was born in Jerseyville August 29, 1891. Her age at the time of death was sixty-five years, five months and twenty-four days. Mrs. Arnold is survived by four sons, Joseph A., Harold E., Francis A. and Clarence E. Arnold of Jerseyville; one daughter, Mrs. Arthur (Evelyn) Twyman of Girard; fourteen grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. She was a member of Steelman Camp, Royal Neighbors of America, Women of the Moose, Eagles Auxiliary, Ruby Rebekah Lodge and Woman’s Relief Corps. funeral services were held Tuesday, February 26, at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home at two o’clock. Reverend M. Edwards Breed, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiated and interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery.

She is survived by two sons, Ralph of Jerseyville and Charles of Missouri; two daughters, Maurietta Weller of Jerseyville and Catherine Platto of Alton; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Kadell whom he married May 10, 1922 in Jerseyville; two daughters, Phyllis Heitzig and Joan Vanausdoll, both of Jerseyville; a brother, James Arter of Alton; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and a sister. Visitation from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home where the Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. The St Francis building fund has been named as a memorial.

Arter, 80, of 904 Walnut St., Jerseyville was celebrated Saturday morning at St Francis Xavier Church with Father Patrick Morrow celebrant. Interment will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. She died at 6 a.m. Dec 4 at Jersey Community Hospital after an extended illness. She was born in Jersey County May 12, 1900, a daughter of William and Mary Casey Kadell. Her husband, Edward P. Arter, died Nov 21, 1979. She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Heitzig and Joan Vanausdoll, both of Jerseyville; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother and two sisters. The St. Francis Xavier Church building fund has been named as a memorial.

Arter, 89, of 3113 Washington, Alton, formerly of Jerseyville, were conducted Saturday afternoon at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home by the Rev. V. Clay Noah. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. He died at 5:25 a.m. Oct 30 at Jersey Community Hospital. He was born in St Louis Oct 4, 1891, a son of James and Katherine Steckel Arter and was a heel fitter at the former International Shoe Co. plant in Jerseyville. His survivors are his wife, the former Nellie Houze whom he married March 22, 1913; two sons, Ralph of Jerseyville and Charles of Cottage Hills; two daughters, Maurietta Weller of Jerseyville and Catherine Platto of Alton; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. The Baptist Church has been named as the memorial.


ASCHEMANN, Charles, died 21-07-1987, buried Calvary Cemetery. Charles “Chuck” Aschemann, 30, of Quincy, died at 9:35 a.m. Tuesday, July 21, 1987, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, following a lengthy illness. He is the son of Delores (Price) Bange of Quincy and the late Marcellus Aschemann. He married the former Angela Tonsor from Jerseyville, who survives. Also surviving are one son, Joseph of Quincy; two sisters, Sue Ippensen and Kathy Aschemann, both of Quincy; and one brother, Dave Aschemann of Quincy. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Zehender, Robinson, Stormer and Cookson Funeral Home in Quincy. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in Quincy. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, and memorials may be directed to St. Dominic’s Building Fund.


ASH, Emma M., born 07-10-1884, Jersey County, Illinois, died 04-03-1963, buried 06-03-1963, Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs Emma Milford Ash, wife of Virgil Ash, of McClusky, died Monday morning, March 4, at 1:40 o’clock at the Watson Nursing Home in Jerseyville where she had resided the past month. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where final rites were held Wednesday afternoon, March 6, at two o’clock. Rev Harold E. Lane, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiated and burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs Ash was a daughter of the late Bartholomew Chappell and Julia Frances Briggs Milford and was born in Jersey County on October 7, 1884. Her age at the time of death was seventy-eight years, four months, and twenty-seven days. Surviving Mrs Ash in addition to her husband is one brother, Charles M. Milford of Alton.


ASH, John L., died 28-09-1976, buried Brighton Cemetery. John L. Ash, 79, of Brighton died at 7:20 a.m. on Sept 28 at St Joseph’s Hospital in Alton. He had been in failing health for three years. Ash was a retired postmaster for the village of Brighton. His survivors are his widow, the former Helen Smilley; a daughter, Mrs. Edward (Dorothy) Plumpe of Ferguson, Mo.; a son, John William Ash of California; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs John (Harriet) McBrien of Alton; and a brother, Eugene R. Ash of Alton. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Oct 1 at the Warner-Targhetta Funeral Home. Burial will be in Brighton Cemetery, with military rites. ASHBY, Ann (Berry), born Illinois, died 28-03-1976, buried 02-04-1976, Calvary Cemetery. Mrs. Ann (Berry) Ashby, 83, a native of Illinois, died on March 28 in Lakeport, Calif. She was a daughter of the late Christa C. and Nancy Jane Carrico Berry. She is survived by three sons, Elston R. Haynes of Lakeport, Calif., Charles Haynes jr., of Denver, Colo., and Richard E. Haynes of Pennsauken, N. J., 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews in this area. Ashford of Jerseyville; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs Herman (Hazel) Guenther of Grafton and Mrs Earl (Margaret) Dabbs of Otterville. ASHFORD, Muriel E., born 12-09-1889, died 11-01-1977, buried 13-01-1977, Carrollton City Cemetery. The funeral of Mrs Muriel E. Ashford, 87, formerly of Greene and Morgan counties, was conducted on Jan. 13 from the Mehl Funeral Home in Carrollton with the Rev. R. E. George officiating. Interment was in Carrollton City Cemetery. She died in the early morning on Jan. 11 at the Jerseyville Care Center where she had been a patient for a few days. She had resided at Carrollton since 1962 following her retirement from the Illinois School for the Deaf at Jacksonville where she had been employed fro 20 years. Mrs. Ashford was a member of the Baptist Church at Wrights. She was born Sept. 12, 1889, a daughter of Jim David and Sarah Crum Pinkerton, Her husband, Elmer Ashford, died Jan. 17, 1944. She is survived by her only daughter, Mrs. Lynn (Hazel Fern) Muntz of Jerseyville; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Four sisters and a brother preceded her in death.


ASHFORD, George W., died 20-08-1927, buried Providence Cemetery. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Jacoby Chapel for George W. Ashford, aged 75 years, retired farmer, who died Tuesday of heart disease at his residence on East Carpenter Street. Elder T. J. Roady of Kane will officiate and burial will be in Providence Cemetery near Carrollton. Mr. Ashford was a native of Greene County, where he successfully operated a farm for many years. Retiring, he moved to Jerseyville fifteen years ago. He had been in ill health for several months being a sufferer from a heart ailment and rheumatism. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs James Crone and Miss Jane Ashford, of Jerseyville; three sons, Fred, of Milwaukee, Wis., Paul of Havana, Ill., and Raymond, of Beardstown, Ill. His two sisters are Mrs. M. E. Short of Roodhouse, Ill., and Miss Jane Cockrell of Los Angeles, Calif. Richard Ashford of Jerseyville is a surviving brother. ASHLOCK, Herbert L., born Greene County, Illinois, died 13-12-1979, buried Valhalla Park. Services for Herbert L. Ashlock, 62, of R.1, Jerseyville were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Delhi Baptist Church with the Rev. James Maxwell officiating. Committal rites were held Monday morning at Valhalla Memorial Park. His death occurred at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 13 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Clayton, MO., after an apparent heart attack. He was employed at Fleischer-Seeger Construction Co., and was a member of Carpenter Local No. 377 for 40 years, presently serving as a financial secretary. born in Carrollton, a son of the late Harry and Claudia Wood Ashlock, he married the former Doris June Baker Feb 11, 1961, in Rockbridge. His survivors are his wife; four stepdaughters, Vera Ingram and Marlene Wells, both of Jerseyville, Roberta Banks of Poplar Bluff, Mo. and Gloria Montague of Bloomington; a brother, Edward “Shorty” Ashlock of Carrollton; and a sister, Virginia Harrison of Clayton, Mo. ASHLOCK, Harry, born 28-05-1880, Greene County, Illinois, died 16-01-1969, buried Carrollton Cemetery. Funeral services for Harry L. Ashlock, 88, of Route 1, Jerseyville, will be held tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Gubser Funeral Home after 2 p.m., Thursday. Mr Ashlock died at 4:20 o’clock Wednesday morning at the Blu Fountain Manor Nursing Home in Godfrey where he had been a patient since January 7th. He had suffered a broken hip on Thanksgiving Day and was taken to the Memorial Hospital for surgery, prior to being transferred to the nursing home. He was born May 28, 1880 in Carrollton, the son of the late Mr and Mrs Revel W. Ashlock. Mr Ashlock, who had retired from farming five years ago due to heart trouble, was a resident of Jersey County for 29 years. He had made his home with his sons since retirement. Mr Ashlock was a member of the Modern Woodman of America for over 65 years. Survivors are two sons, Herbert and Edward (Shorty) Ashlock of Route 1, Jerseyville; one stepdaughter, Virginia Harrison, Clayton, Mo; two brothers, Casse Ashlock, Springfield, and Tom Ashlock, New Salem, and one grandson. He was married to Claudia Wood on Dec. 13, 1913, and her death occurred in 1961. Three sisters and one brother also preceded him in death.


ASHLOCK, Lois Marilyn, born 00-00-1931, died 24-06-1946, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Jersey County Democrat – June 28, 1946 – Miss Lois Marilyn Ashlock, fifteen-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs Jesse R. Ashlock of Murrayville, formerly of Jerseyville, was injured fatally at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 24 when she was run over by the family automobile at the home of her parents. Miss Ashlock and her sister Ruth, were attempting to start the car, when the accident occurred. The vehicle had stalled near the home and the young women had hitched a team of horses to the car to pull it back to the home. Lois was thrown under the car and the vehicle passed over her body. Miss Ashlock is survived by her parents, three sisters Mrs Catherine Griffith of Manchester, Mrs Millie Jones of White Hall, and Miss Ruth Ashlock at home, and one brother, Richard who is in military service stationed in Saipan. The body will be brought to Jerseyville for interment in Oak Grove Cemetery.


ASHLOCK, Enley Emiline, born 25-08-1878, Jersey County, Illinois, died 08-12-1971, buried Kane Cemetery. Final services for Mrs Enley Emiline Ashlock, 93, of Kane were held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. Jack Brown officiating. Her death occurred December 8 at her home. Interment was in Kane Cemetery. She was born August 25, 1878 in Jersey County the daughter of Albert A. and Elizabeth Seago Abbott. Mrs Ashlock was a member of the Kane Baptist Church. Her survivors are two sons, James A. Ashlock of Kane and Harry L. Ashlock of Wood River; two daughters, Mrs Victor (Louise) Sears of Centralia, Missouri, and Miss Almeda Ashlock of Kane; 16 grand – children; 38 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; and two brothers, Howard Abbott of Jerseyville and Albert A. Abbott of Kane. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, William; one daughter, Marie Villeneuve; four grandchildren, three brothers and one sister.

Kane — Geraldine Ashlock, 78, was pronounced dead at 12:15 p.m. Sunday at her residence. born in Jersey County, daughter of the late Carl and Stella (Irwin) Hutchens. She married James Ashlock on June 22, 1922. He died in 1972. Surviving are two daughters, Judith Clendenen of Fieldon and Dotelease Shane of Kane; four sons, Carroll of Peoria, Donald of Coarse Gold, Calif., Lt. Commander Edward Ashlock of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and Gerald Burch of East Alton; 24 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Edith Cochran of Alton; and a brother, Irwin Hutchens of Bradenton, Fla. She was a charter member of the Sunshine Class of Kane Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. The body will be moved to Kane Baptist Church at 12:30 p.m. Thursday and will lie in state until service time at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Peter Ely officiating. Burial will be in Kane Cemetery and memorials may be made to the Church where she was a member.


ASSMANN, Sophia A., born 15-07-1884, Greene County, Illinois, died 25-12-1977, buried 27-12-1977, Oak Grove Cemetery. Graveside services were held at Oak Grove Cemetery this afternoon, Dec. 27, for Mrs. Sophia A. Assmann, 93, of Jerseyville. Her death occurred at 4:50 p.m. Dec 25 at Greenwood Manor. She was born in Carrollton July 15, 1884, a daughter of John D. and Sarah M. Sturman.


ASZMANN, Nellie, born Jersey County, Illinois, died 06-12-1952. Mrs Nellie Aszmann, seventy-nine year old widow of Dr. Max Aszmann of Chester, died Saturday, December 6, in the Weber Nursing Home in Alton following an extended illness resulting from a paralytic stroke. Mrs Aszmann was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Jacob Arkebauer and was born in Jersey County where she spent her early life. Following her marriage to Dr. Aszmann the couple established their home in Chester, where they lived for many years.


ATCHISON, Neal, born Illinois, died 00-11-1975, buried Kane Cemetery. Final rites for Neal “Buck” Atchison, 67, of Kane ere held on Nov. 25 at the Mehl Funeral Home in Carrollton with the Rev. John Sims of Dow officiating. Burial was in the Kane Cemetery. He died unexpectedly at his home Saturday evening. Atchison had operated the Atchison Trucking Service in Kane. His survivors are his wido, the former Eula Burns; three sisters, Mrs Ruth Houseman of Bethalto, Mrs Eula Clabaugh of Jerseyville and Mrs Ethel Greaves of Carrollton; two brothers, Bill of St. Louis and Laverne of Germany; and two grandchildren.


ATCHISON, Theodore Edward, born 17-10-1914, Jersey County, Illinois, died 04-08-1982, buried St. Francis Cemetery. Funeral Mass for Theodore “Pete” Edward Atchison, 68, 409 Maple Ave., Jerseyville was celebrated Saturday morning at St Francis Xavier Church with the Rev. William Hembrow as celebrant. Burial was in St Francis Cemetery. He died Aug 4 at 12:38 p.m. at Jersey Community Hospital where he had been admitted the previous day. He was born oct 17, 1914 in Jerseyville, son of the late William H. and Kathryn Aylward Atchison and had been a clerk at Norton’s Hardware Store. He is survived by one brother, Fred Atchison of Jerseyville, and nephews. The Jerseyville Elks Lodge conducted a service during visitation Friday evening at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home. The Elks Lodge has been named as a memorial.


ATCHISON, James Theodore, born Illinois, died 28-10-1915, buried 21-05-1917, Oak Grove Cemetery. Jerseyville Republican – Oct. 1915. – J. T. Atchison of Alton died at Logan, N.M. Thursday night. He was for many years resident of Jerseyville, belonged to several lodges and a printer by trade. He went to N.M. to assist his son in taking up a homestead claim.
Jerseyville Republican – May 1917 – James Theodore Atchison, 71 years of age, died Oct 28, 1915 at Logan, N.M. His remains were brought to Jerseyville Monday, May 21, 1917 for burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. He went with his family to NM for his health and died a few weeks after his arrival there. He served four years in the Civil War, enlisting at the age of 16 as fife boy, and was mustered out at the close of the war as Second Lieutenant, Co H. 50th Ill Infantry. Formerly a resident of Jerseyville, and foreman in office of Jersey County Democrat. His remains were brought to Jerseyville by his son, Alan A. of St. Louis. He leaves a wife and son.


ATCHISON, Daniel Joseph, born 25-07-1949, Madison County, Illinois, died 28-09-1983. Daniel Joseph Atchison, 34, of 309 E. Carpenter, Jerseyville, died at 10:53 p.m. Sept. 28 at Christian Northeast Hospital, St. Louis. He was assistant manager at the Jerseyville McDonnals and had formerly taught at Holy Ghost School and coached basketball at St. Francis Xavier School. He was born July 25, 1949 in Alton, son of Fred Atchison of Jerseyville and the late Goldie Morris Atchison. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church and Knights of Columbus, Third Degree. His survivors are his wife, the former Linda Million whom he married June 15, 1974 in Jerseyville; one son, Patrick, and a daughter, Katherine, at home; his father; and a brother, David, of Pekin. The Rosary was recited Friday evening at Jacoby Funeral Home. A funeral mass was concelebrated Saturday morning at St. Francis Xavier Church with the Revs. Patrick Morrow, William Hembrow and R. T. Shea as on celebrants. Masses are suggested as memorials.


ATCHISON, Eva M., born 24-02-1872, Illinois, died 10-02-1892. Jersey County Democrat – Feb. 18, 1892 – Eva M. Atchison born Feb. 24, 1872 at Mt Sterling, Ill and died at her home in Jerseyville, Feb 10, 1892. At age of 14 she united with the Baptist Church. Funeral from her home, Rev. Porter and Tyson. Remains enclosed in a pure white casket and she seemed to be sleeping. Her sister and husband, Mr and Mrs Fry, of Mt Sterling, Illinois were present.


ATCHISON, Fred W., died 00-08-1927. Jerseyville News – Aug. 1927 – Fred W. Atchison died at Tempe, Arizona. He was 52 years of age and the eldest son of Mrs Elizabeth Atchison. As a boy he was employed as a printer at Jersey County Democrat. In Tempe he was a railroad operator and agent. He leaves his widow, Mrs Anna Atchison, one son, Charles Wm.(15), both of Tempe, his Mother, three brothers; Wm. H., Clarence, George of this city, sisters; Misses Myrtle and Helen of this city, Mrs Mayme Murray of Alton. Burial was at Tempe.


ATCHISON, Frederick Aylward, born Jersey County, Illinois, died 18-07-1988, buried 21-07-1988, St. Francis Cemetery. Jerseyville — Frederick Aylward Atchison, 78, died at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. Atchison was a foreman for the parts department of Bush Hog-Krause prior to retirement. He was born in Jerseyville, son of the late William H. and Catherine (Aylward) Atchison. On Jan. 10, 1948, he married the former Goldie Morris. She died in 1977. Surviving are a son, David Atchison of Bedford, Ind.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Atchison; a brother, Theodore Atchison; and a sister, Delia Elizabeth Pickerel. Visitation will be 5 – 9 p.m. Wednesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where a wake service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday at St Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville with the Rev Henry Schmidt as celebrant. Military rites will be conducted at St Francis Cemetery in Jerseyville by Jerseyville American Legion Post. Memorials may be given to Jerseyville Knights of Columbus.


ATCHISON, Goldie M., born 27-03-1921, Illinois, died 22-10-1977, buried St. Francis Cemetery. Funeral Mass for Mrs Goldie M. Atchison, 56, of 309 E. Carpenter St., Jerseyville was celebrated this morning, Oct 24, at St Francis Xavier Church with the Rev R.T. Shea celebrant. Burial was in St Francis Xavier Cemetery. She died at 12:20 p.m. on Oct 22 at Jersey Community Hospital. Mrs Atchison was a deputy in the circuit clerk’s office for 11 years. She was chairwoman of the Jersey County Democrat Central Committee, served as secretary of the Jersey County Democrat Women’s Club and was secretary of St. Francis Xavier Church Altar Society. She was born March 27, 1921 in Illinois, a daughter of Pleasant and Pearl Hardwick Morris. Her survivors are her husband, Fred Atchison; two sons, Daniel and David Atchison; one brother, Harmon Morris of Jerseyville; three sisters, Mrs Freland (Helen) Blasa, Jerseyville, Mrs Paul (Maurita) Grizzle, Carrollton and Mrs Lloyd (Dimple) Anderson, Kane. Visitation was held at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home Sunday where the Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. The family has designated the American Cancer Society as a memorial.

Mrs Atchison was a member of the Royal Neighbors Lodge. Her survivors are two sons, Fred Atchison and Theodore (Pete) Atchison of Jerseyville; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs Earl (Celia) Birkenmeyer of Jerseyville and Mrs Harry (Margaret)Taylor of Lebanon. Her husband, William Harrison Atchison, died in 1957. A daughter, three brothers and one sister also preceded her in death. Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. Tuesday at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. The family designates the American Cancer Society as a memorial.


ATCHISON, Luther, born Illinois, died 28-04-1984. Jerseyville – Luther “Shanty” Atchison, 64, died at 7:54 a.m. today at Jersey Community Hospital. He retired as a master sergeant after 25 years of service in the Army and was a night clerk at Morgan Hotel in Jerseyville. born is Kane Township, a son of the late Luther Kelly and Pearl (Atteberry) Atchison, he married the former Brenda Bechdoldt on December 20, 1982 in Jerseyville, and she survives. In addition to his wife, surviving are two daughters, Dawn Meyer of Greenfield and Patsy Faith; a stepdaughter, Renee Cummings; a son James Atchison of Germany; three stepsons, Franz Atchison, Robert Cummings, Timothy Cummings, and Jasper Cummings; several grandchildren; a sister, Ethel Greaves of Carrollton; and a brother, William Atchison of St. Louis. Arrangements are pending at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Heart Fund has been named as a memorial.


ATKINS, Clarence G., died 20-08-1973, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Funeral services for Clarence G. Atkins, 73, of 465 Allan Drive, Florissant, Missouri, a former Jerseyville resident, were held Wednesday morning from Hutches Mortuary in Florissant. His death occurred August 20th. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. He is survived by his wife, Mrs Juanita Mae Atkins; two sons, Thomas G. and Robert W.; one brother, William e. and a sister, Grace Drobe.


ATTEBERRY, Dolores Lorraine, born Jersey County, Illinois, died 08-02-1983, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. The funeral of Dolores Lorraine Atteberry, 57, R.2, Jerseyville was held Friday at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home with the Rev. R. E. George officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cememtery. She died at 6:28 p.m. Feb. 8 at Christian Northeast Hospital, St. Louis. born in Jersey County, she was a daughter of Charles A. and Verna E. Griffin Marshall. Her survivors are her mother, Verna Marshall; husband, Paul Atteberry, whom she married Dec. 23, 1944 in Jerseyville; two sons Rodney and Randy Atteberry, Jerseyville; daughter, Linda Drainer, Grafton; sisters, Lois Rodgers, LaPorte, La., Flois Shackles and Donna Jensen, both of Gary, Ind.; grandchildren, Misty and Brian Drainer, Grafton. The Heart Fund and Cancer Society have been named as memorials.


ATTEBERRY, Carl L., died 10-01-1977. Services for Carl L. Atteberry, 63, 306 E. Lawrence St., Springfield, formerly of Jerseyville, will be held at 10 a.m. on Jan. 12 at the Cathedral in Springfield. His death occurred Sunday afternoon in Springfield. He was married to the former June Cody in 1938 who survives. Other survivors are on son, Carl Jr. of Texas and daughter, Mary Conway of Springfield; five grandchildren; two sisters, and two brothers. Visitation will be held at the Kirlan and Eagen Funeral Home, Springfield, on Tuesday.


ATTEBERRY, Clarence Edwin, born 26-12-1927, Jersey County, Illinois, died 04-06-1973. Clarence Edwin Atteberry, 45, of Clarksville, Mo., formerly of Alton, died at 3:05 a.m. Sunday at Pike County Hospital, Louisiana, Mo. after a long illness. Mr Atteberry was formerly employed with the GM & O Railroad. He was a veteran of World War II. He was born Dec. 26, 1927, in Grafton, and married the former Rose Marie Davis Oct. 9, 1965, in Alton. Surviving are his widow, Rose Marie; a son, Clarence Jr. and three daughters, Loyce Ann, Mary Ellen and Edith May, all at home; two brothers, Mervin Atteberry of Modesto, Calif., and William of South Roxana and two sisters, Mrs Jason (Edith) Autrey of Pleasant Hill and Mrs Harold (Cheryl) Pickeral of Louisiana, Mo. Visitation begins after 5 p.m. today at Ward Funeral Home.


AULTMAN, Samuel S., died 13-12-1906. Samuel S. Aultman died at County Farm December 13, 1906. He was 58 years of age. The funeral was from the County Farm.


AUSTILL, Frances E., born Jersey County, Illinois, died 07-10-1971, buried Glasgow Cemetery. Mrs Frances E. Austill of 1147 Rural Street, Aurora, formerly of Jerseyville, died at eleven fifteen o’clock Friday morning at the hospital in St Charles, Illinois. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville where services were held at one o’clock Monday afternoon with Reverend Harold Hendricks of Jacksonville officiating. Burial was in Glasgow Cemetery at Glasgow. Mrs Austill, a daughter of Mrs Lela M. Stoeckel Anders of Alton and the late Loren Stoeckel, was born in Jerseyville, and her age at the time of death was forty-nine years, seven months, and twenty-six days. Her survivors are her husband, Ralph W. Austill of Aurora; one son, Ralph W. Austill III of Streamwood; her mother, Mrs Anders of Alton; her stepfather, Alba Anders of Alton; one sister, Mrs James Anders of Jacksonville, and one half-brother, Loren Stoeckel, Jr., of Alton. Her father and one daughter, Neva Lela Austill, preceded her in death.


AUSTIN, Charles R., died 04-07-1918, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Charles R. Austin, aged 30 years, 1 month and 28 days, died at his home 6 miles west of Fieldon, Thursday, July 4th, at 12:30 p.m. Mr Austin’s death was quite sudden. He was in good health Wednesday and was working in the field, and that evening was at the store of his father-in-law, Mr Page, at Nutwood. Shortly before midnight he became very ill, and died about 12:30. He leaves his wife and a five-year-old son, Randolph. He was well known in Jerseyville and for a number of years was employed as a conductor on the A. J. & P. of late, he had been farming on the Reardon farm near Nutwood. Funeral services will be held from the Baptist Church in this city Sunday at 2:00 p.m., Rev Joseph Jenkins officiating, and the interment will in Oak Grove Cemetery.
