GISELL. Gisell, 58, funeral held at St. Francis church with Fr J J Clancy officiating. Buried in St. Francis cemetery. Died in Webster Groves, MO. Worked for International Shoe company. Active pall bearers: J J Mcguire, P J Fleming, J T Hanley, Wm Tracy, Walter Walsh, Thomas Allen, T W Kirby, and Heber Wedding. Honorary pall bearers: W H Moulton, Hough Elliott, James Scarnel, James Quinn of St Louis and B H Bowmen. Those who came a distance for the funeral: Mrs Mary G’sell, F J Reynolds, Jennie Chapman, Albert G’sell All of St. Louis; Arthur G’sell, Joseph Allen, Sweet Springs, Mo; Mrs Richard Fairbrother, Mrs Benjamin Welcher, Mrs John Handslong, Miss Agnes Root of Quincy.


G’SELL. Julius F G’Sell, 58, died at a hospital in Webster Groves, MO, where he had been for the last 10 months. He was a native of Summerfield, IL, being born there on September 6, 1869. A resident of Jerseyville for 15 yrs, and connected to International Shoe company of Jerseyville. He was later a traveling salesman as Quality Superintendent of International company, which position he held until his last illness. He leaves his wife; 3 Sons, Arthur, Sweet Springs, Mo, James and Robert of this city; 2 Daughters, Mrs Joseph Allen of Sweet Springs, Mo and Mrs Richard Allen of Jerseyville; 4 grandchildren. Remains were brought to the home. Funeral then from St. Francis church with Rev Fr J J Clancy. Interment in St. Francis cemetery.


G’SELL. Robert R G’Sell, 68, died unexpectedly March 2 at his home in Indianapolis, IN G’Sell, retired, had been in the heating and cooling business when the family lived in Jerseyville. Surviving are his wife, Eva Mae (Maxwell) G’Sell; 3 sons, William a of New Haven Ct, Robert J and John m; 5 daughters, Catherine Higgins, Patricia Olen and Susam M, all in Indianapolis, Ann Fuller of Lebanon, MO, Cynthia Day, Bakersfield, CA; 14 grandchildren; 2 g-grandchildren; 1 sister, Maybelle Heffron, Blue Island. He was a brother of the late Arthur F and James F G’Sell and Agnes E Allen. Burial was in Washing Park Memorial cemetery, Indianapolis.


G’SELL. Willam Anthony G’Sell, died at the home of his parents Mr & Mrs Frank G’Sell on March 26. Funeral from St. Francis church with Rev J J Driscoll.


GABBETT. Delmar J Gabbett, 75, died June 8, 1987, at Garnet’s Chateau nursing home. Gabbett was a retired partner in Altronics TV of Jerseyville, retiring in 1983 after 25 yrs service. A WWII veteran, he was born in Delavan, IL, son of the late William & Della (Wein) Gabbett. On March 21, 1946, he married Pearl (Schneider) Gabbett. She survives. Also surviving are 2 sons, Robert French, Jerseyville and Wayne Gabbett of Naples, FL; 7 grandchildren; 10 grandchildren; and 2 brothers, Richard Gabbett of Jerseyville and James Gabbett of Middletown, MO. Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Services were held there with Rev Rick Francis officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Military rites were held by Jerseyville American Legion Post 492. Memorials may be given to Jerseyville Free Library.


GABER. Beulah Gaber, nee Cadwallader, 67, died August 1 at St. Joseph hospital, Alton. Final services were held for the Godfrey resident at Cherry St Baptist church, Alton. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. She was born May 12, 1905, in Jersey county and attended Jersey county schools and Brown’s Business College. Mrs Gaber was a Medical Secretary at St Joseph Hospital for 15 yrs. She was married Allen R Earley who died in 1939 and later married William Gaber. Surviving are her husband William; 2 sons, Allen Earley of Cincinnati, OH, and Gordon Earley of St. Louis; 1 Stepson, Charles Gaber of Godfrey; 1 stepdaughter, Mrs Margaret Closser of Jerseyville; 10 grandchildren; and 1 g-grandchild.


GABER. Minnie Mae Gaber, 75 yrs, 7 mo, 4 days, widow of Charles Gaber, died September 8?, at Green Lawn Nursing Home, Jerseyville. She was a daughter of the late Joshua & Josephine (Davis) Smith and was born in Jerseyville February 4, 1878. Surviving are 1 daughter, Mrs Thomas Arter of Jerseyville; 1 son, William Gaber of Alton; 3 Grandchildren, Mrs Alvin Burwig, Mrs Lee Closser of Jerseyville, and Charles Gaber of Godfrey, and 2 g-granddaughters. Visitation and service was held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville on September 11. Rev M. Edwards Breed, pastor of First Presbyterian church, officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.


GAFFNEY, Bessie K. (Pope), born 1895, Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois, died 01-1985, buried Oak Grove cemetery.

GAFFNEY. Dennis Gaffney, 82, one of Jerseyville’s pioneer citizens, died at his home in Jerseyville November 28. Service from St. Francis church.


GAFFNEY. Edna Lucille Gaffney, 7 months, daughter of Mr & Mrs Henry Gaffney, died in Alton. Remains were brought to Jerseyville and services were from the home of her grandmother, Mrs Nancy Gaffney. Rev Joseph Jenkins officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.


GAFFNEY, Elmer “Guy,” born 21-10-1897, Carrollton, Greene County, Illinois, died 09-1970, buried Witt cemetery.

GARREL, Emily. For the first time since women were franchised they served on a jury in Jersey county last Tuesday morning as aids to Coroner Brewester of Fieldon. Miss Emily Garrel, aged about 68 years, of Dow, was found dead in her bed the morning of election day by her sister, Ida, who is a mute. The two sisters lived by themselves at Dow. When Ida found her sister dead she summoned the neighbors who took charge of the situation. Coroner Brewster was called and went to Dow. He empaneled the following Jury: Mrs. Flossie Michael, Mrs. Flora Blackburn, Miss Ruby McDow, L. E. Vanausdoll, Mrs. Abbie Graham and R. A. McDow. The Jury, after investigating the case, returned a verdict of sudden heart failure resulting from chronic heart disease. Funeral services were conducted on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the Holiness church at Dow. Interment took place at Elsah cemetery.


GRIZZLE. N Elizabeth Grizzle, 45. Daughter of Mr & Mrs C C Grizzle, died January 4, 1916. She was born June 31, 1871 and at the age of 16, was baptized by Elder W W Lewis into fellowship of Rockbridge Baptist church. On June 4, 1891, she married Elder William Gaither. They were parents of 6 children, 3 of whom died in infancy. She leaves her Husband, Rev William Gaither; 1 son, earl; 2 daughter, Esther Laird, and Miss Wilma Gaither; 1 grandson, William E Laird. Life is not measured by the span of years but by the deeds of the liver. Our dear departed friend’s life was so lived that like the beautiful flowers that bloom and fate, a sweet fragrance will ever be wafted about hose who were fortunate enough to share her acquaintance. To know her was to love her. Funeral from the family home by Rev Joseph Jenkinsin in the morning and at Medora Baptist church in the afternoon by Rev a W Shields. Burial was in Medora cemetery.


GALLUP. Inas L Gallup, 72, died December 26, 1986, in Godfrey, after a long illness. She was born in Jersey county, daughter of the late Joseph & Christina (Martin) Kraushaar. Her husband, Roy E Gallup preceded her in death. Surviving are 1 brother, Otto Kraushaar of Jerseyville; and 1 sister, Anna Mayfield of East Alton. Visitation was from Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Burial was in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto. Memorials may be given to Ronald Mcdonald House.


GALORE. John W Galore, 68, a farmer of the Fieldon vicinity, died December 31 at Jersey County Memorial hospital. He was born July 11, 1911 in Arcola, a son of William & Electa (Green) Galore and married Mary (Hutchins) Galore on February 14, 1934. Surviving are his wife, Mary; 1 brother, James Galore of Fieldon; 1 niece and 2 nephews. Services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Wilbur Cain officiated and burial was in Fieldon.


GAMBLE. Mrs Mary E Gamble, 80, died at her home in Jerseyville.


GAMBLE. Silas Gamble, 38, died at his home in Jerseyville on December 1, 1908. Funeral from his home with Rev W W Hicks.


GAMERDINGER. Edith H Gamerdinger, 85, died June 1988, at Jersey County Memorial hospital. She had been a legal secretary for more than 50 yrs. Born in Jersey county, she was the daughter of the late Charles & Geogianna (Embley) Gamerdinger. Her sister, Eva Gamerdinger, preceded her in death. Visitation and services were from Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev Charles

GARBER. George F Garber, 49, died at his home on Giddings Ave. on September 1, 1903. Funeral from home, Rev J G Dee, officiating.


GARBER. Mabel M. (Arfsten), born 10-09-1900, Slaten, CO, died 10-04-1983, buried 13-04-1983, Oak Grove cemetery.


GARBER. Aru Garber. 81 yrs, 2 mo, 8 days, of Jerseyville, died Friday am, March 27, at Watson nursing home where she had been moved 1 week earlier. She was a daughter of the late Julius & Anna (Maus) Roettgers, and was born in Jersey county. Surviving are 2 Sons, William of Jerseyville and Elmer of Fidelity; 1 daughter, Mrs Stella Miller, Jerseyville; 11 grandchildren; 6 g-grandchildren; and 2 brother, Julius Roettgers of Alton and Charles Roettgers, Jerseyville. Her husband, George Garber; and 2 daughters, Mrs William Schermerhorn and Mrs James Vaughn, Sr, preceded her in death a number of years ago. Funeral services were held March 29, at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev F W Schwarzlose, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. Interment was in Otterville cemetery.


GARBER. William Charles Garber, 76, a retired grocer, was dead on arrival at Jersey County Memorial hospital Tuesday pm. Final services were held Friday at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. The WWI veteran was born April 15, 1904 a son of George & Mary (Roettgers) Garber and had been in the grocery business in Jerseyville for many years. Surviving are his wife, Mabel Garber; 2 daughters, Barbara Garber, Lagrange Park and Mrs Robert (Sharon) Doenitz, Springfield; 2 brothers, Richard Garber, Springfield and William Garber of Washington, DC; 4 grandchildren; and 1 sister, Mrs Stella Miller of this city. His parents, 1 brother, and 2 sister preceded him in death. Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Carlton Christenson conducted the services and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Graveside services were in charge of Worthey Post American Legion and VFW.


GARD. Mrs George Gard, 86, D in Fairmount, SD. Funeral from ME church in Jerseyville. First husband was James Rowray. He died in 1880. They were parents of 4 Children: Mrs Holton of SD; 2 sons, Elmer and Byron of CA; and 1 son preceded her in death in 1910. Her second husband was George Gard. One sister also survives, Mrs Mary Shafer, 86, of Jerseyville. Burial was in Oak Grove.


GARD. Mary Harriet Gard, 54, daughter of the late Rev & Mrs Stephen Catt, was born in Jerseyville, October 1, 1867. Educated in our public schools from which she graduated. After teaching for 2 years, she , in 1889, was married to George Gard of Los Angeles, CA, formerly of Jerseyville. They made CA their home. They were parents of 4 children; 3 survive, Harry, Ray, and Russell. Her husband; her mother, Mrs Stephen Catt; 4 brothers, H J and S W of Jerseyville, Charles of Decatur, and Orville of Alton; also 4 sisters, Miss Isabel Catt of Jerseyville, Mrs J V White, Decatur, Mrs Wm H Martin, Moline, and Mrs Charles Jewsbury of Glendale, CA. Mrs Gard, early in life, united with First Baptist church, Jersey.


GARD. Will B Gard, second son of the late Rev & Mrs T J Gard, pioneers of central Ohio conference of the ME church, died at Toledo, OH, September 8. He was buried in Tiffin Ohio. He was a cousin of Mrs H A Tunehorst and employed as a watchmaker in Tunehorst jewelry store some years ago. He leaves his wife, 1 son and 1 daughter.


GARDNER. Nancy Gardner, 88, wife of Ferand Gardner, died recently. Funeral from Bethel ME church. Rev Derr officiating.

GARGUS, Martin, born 05-11-1922, Red Bird, Missouri, died 14-07-1953, buried Kinder, MO.


GARIN. Bernice Garin, 78, died at St. Mary hospital in East St. Louis. The former resident of Alton, where she had lived for 15 years, had been residing at Pleasant View nursing home in Collinsville for 6 months. She was born November 10, 1891, to the late Charles & Frances Bell in Otter Creek, IL. She attended school in Jersey county. On November 4, 1920, she was married to James Garin in the SS Peter & Paul Catholic church, Alton, where she was a member. Surviving are her husband; 1 daughter, Mrs Dorothy Messick of Alton; 7 grandchildren and 1 g-grandchild. 1 daughter, and brothers and sisters preceded her in death. Friends called at Staten funeral home, Alton, where prayer services was held. A funeral mass was celebrated at SS Peter & Paul Catholic church. Committal was in St Patrick cemetery, Alton.


GARLAND. Robert W (Robby) Garland, 7, son of Dr & Mrs Robert M Garland, Jerseyville, died in his sleep early Mon am following an extended period of ill health. He was born in Jerseyville August 14, 1963. Funeral services were held at First United Methodist church, Jerseyville. Rev W Louis Purcell officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation was held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The story of Robby’s 2 yr bout with Neuroblastoma (malignant nerve tumor) was told in the April 3 issue of the Democrat News. In his short life span the little boy had been hospitalized on several occasions, had submitted to surgery and had undergone physical therapy to learn to walk again. The Robby Garland Fund, established by friends at the State Bank of Jerseyville last month, now becomes a memorial fund. In addition to his parents, Robby is survived by 2 sister, Tracey and Darcy, both at home; his paternal grandmother, Mrs Lloyd Adams of Jerseyville and his maternal grandparents, Mr & Mrs William L Steel of Western Australia.


GARRAHAN. Dorothy P Garrahan, 73, died May 21, 1991, at Jerseyville care center. She was born in Jersey county on August 24, 1917, a daughter of the late Philip & Stella (Hunt) Young. On January 15, 1962, she married John Garrahan at Pompano Beach, FL. He preceded her in death. Surviving are 5 sisters, Evelyn Kraushaar and Betty Burch, both of Jerseyville, Elkna Mowrey of Dutzow, MO, Ada Hartwick of Carrollton and Lola E Thell of Athens; and 3 brothers, Phillip T Young of Carrollton, Allen Young of Jerseyville and Harold Young of Rockbridge. Services and burial were private. Memorials may be given to Greene County Health Department or Jerseyville Care Center. Airsman-hires Funeral Home of Carrollton was in charge of arrangements.


GARRELL. Laura Garrell, 94, a native of Jersey county, died June 30, at the home of her daughter, Mrs Pearl Deem, in St. Louis. Mrs Garrell, was the former Laura Allen of Grafton and was born in Jersey county. She was the last member of a family of 6 children. For a number of years Mrs Garrell and her husband, the late Herman Garrell, resided in Alton. Surviving Mrs Garrell in addition to her daughter are 2 grandsons. 2 children and her husband preceded her in death. Funeral services were held July 3, at the Biederwieden funeral home in St. Louis and burial was in Valhalla cemetery, St. Louis county.


GARRELL. Miss Martha Emily Garrell was found dead in bed at her home in Grafton, Tuesday am, November 7, by her sister, Miss Ida Garrell. Miss Ida Garrell, who is a deaf mute, reported that both the sisters had retired for the night and she had noticed that Martha had gotten up several times during the night but when she went to awaken her about 5:30 am she could not rouse her. She called in a neighbor and it was discovered that Miss Garrell was dead. A coroner’s jury returned a verdict of death from heart failure. Funeral services were held from the Holiness church at Dow, Rev J W Youngman officiating. Interment will be in the Elsah cemetery.


GARRELS. Mrs Mary Garrels, 64, died March 20, 1896, at her home 8 miles west of Jerseyville. Funeral in cemetery near Fieldon.


GARRETSON. G R Garretson, 87, died at he home of his daughter, Mrs S D Moor, of Springfield, on November 28. Funeral from ME church at Fidelity. Rev C Nash officiated. Mr Garrettson has been a resident of Jersey county since 1845 and was one of the oldest residents of central IL.


GARRETSON. Mrs Libbie Garretson, 56, widow of Dr Peter Garretson, of Peoria, IL, died at the home of Paul Thatcher in Jerseyville. She accompanied the body of her mother, Mrs Sarah Van Pelt, from Peoria to Jerseyville, for burial 2 months ago. She became ill while here. Her Son, Dr Arthur Garretson, practices dentistry in Rockfore, IL. Her daughter, Enid, was with her during her stay here. Mrs Garretson was the last surviving member of the Van Pelt family. The body was taken to Peoria and the funeral was from the family home there.


GARRISON. Bernice a Garrison, 68, of Jerseyville died November 21, at Jersey County Memorial hospital. She had been ill for some time. Funeral services were conducted at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev L E Hutchinson officiated. Burial was in White Hall. Born in Calhoun county October 20, 1911, she was a daughter of Howard & Pearl (Calendar) Braymen. Her survivors are 2 sons, Royal & Ronald Garrison of Jerseyville; 1 brother, William Braymen of Kampsville; and 1 sister, Iabelle Nudi of Waukegan; 12 grandchildren; 5 g-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Garrison who died November 15, 1977, parents, 1 son and 1 daughter. Memorials may be given to the heart fund.


GARRISON. Florence Jane Garrison, 93, of Godfrey, died at Alton Memorial hospital. Born in Hawkins Prairie, daughter of the late John & Sarah (Prichett) Gross, her first husband was Ernest Smith who preceded her in death. She later married Amos Garrison and he also preceded her in death. Surviving are 1 daughter, Marie Grimes of Denver, CO; 3 sons, Maynard Smith of Belleville, William W Smith of Hartford and Milfred Smith of Denver, CO; 7 grandchildren and 5 g-grandchildren. Gent funeral home was in charge of arrangements and there was no visitation. The body was cremated.


GARRISON. Minnie Garrison, 85, a former Jersey county resident, died July 26 at the Old Peoples Christian home in St. Louis where she had resided the past 6 yrs. Funeral services were held at the Alexander funeral home in St. Louis and burial was in Bellfontaine cemetery. William Lurton of Dow, a brother of Mrs Garrison, went to the funeral home but was unable to attend services the following day. At the services were Mrs Lurton, her son, Robert of Carrollton, and her daughter, Mrs Allen Dunn of Hollister, CA.


GARRISON. Roy E Garrison, 74, of Jerseyville, died November 15 at St. Mary hospital in Richmond Heights, MO. He had been ill for some time. He was born in Greene county Jun 10, 1903, a son of John W & Mary F (Hillis) Garrison and was a machinist. He is survived by his widow, Bernice (Braymen) Garrison whom he married June 30, 1927; 2 Sons, Royal and Ronald Garrison both of Jerseyville; 11 grandchildren and 2 g-grandchildren; 1 Brother, Raymond Garrison of Nebo and 1 sister, Mrs Leta Evans, Carrollton. 1 son and 1 daughter, preceded him in death. Funeral services were held November 18, at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Wayne Hammond officiated. Burial was in White Hall cemetery.


GARVER. Leo Garver, Sr, of Albuquerque, NM, died at Veterans hospital there. He was the husband of the former Miss Meda Stevens of Jerseyville. Although Mr Garver had been in ill health for an extended period of time his death was unexpected. He had undergone amputation of a leg in Jan, but had improved and had expected to return to his home in a few days. He suffered a stroke, causing his death. Mr Garver, a retired army officer, was a veteran of WWI and WWII. After his military service he had engaged in construction work. He was a former resident of Decatur. Funeral services were May 19, from Strong-thorne Mortuary in Albuquerque and burial was in Veterans cemetery there. Memorials may be given to the medical school of the University of NM in lieu of flowers. Surviving are his wife; 1 Son, Leo Douglas Garver, Albuquerque. Mrs Herschell Dabbs of Otterville and Mrs Marx Wieneke of Fieldon, sisters of Mrs Garver, attended the rites and spent a few days with their sister. The Garver family had frequently visited family and friends here.


GARY. Dr J F Gary, died at his home in Delhi, June 19. He was a son of the late Thomas & Sarah Rives Gary, being born on the old homestead a few miles east of Greenfield where he grew to manhood. He taught school 2 yrs and also commenced the study of medicine. He studied in the office of Dr J H Lane at Barr’s store for 1 year, went to St. Louis to continue study. He graduated from American medical college in 1878 and began practice at Jerseyville. He then opened a practice in Delhi. Came back to Greenfield in the 1880’s. In 1896, he returned to Delhi and on October 10, 1882, married Mary (Ingles) Gary of Alton. Surviving are, 1 daughter, Lucille; 2 sons, Burton and Rex; 3 brothers, W a and H H Gary of Greenfield and E E Gary of Piasa; 3 sisters, Mrs G W Holliday, Golden City, MO, Mrs B F Jennings, Girard, and Mrs George Tuthill, Seattle, Washington. Interment was in Asbury cemetery, Greenfield.


GARY. William a Gary, 54, born in Macoupin county, 5 1/2 miles from Greenfield, December 29, 1852, on a farm which he owned at the time of his death. He died at his home in Greenfield, October 27, 1906. He grew to manhood on the farm where he was born. He gave up farming as an occupation to attend school at Lincoln, IL, after which he attended a School of Pharmacy in St. Louis, preparing himself as a druggist. He engaged in that business for the first time in Delhi, Jersey county, where in the fall of 1881, he married Mary F (Watson) Gary, who died October 21, 1899. 4 children were born to that union: Frank, Futh, James and Fry; all are living. He remained in business in Delhi about 2 yrs, when he moved to Chesterfield, Macoupin county. He remained in business there for 23 yrs, until May 28, 1903, when he came to Greenfield and opened up his business on the north side of the square, which he kept until the time of his death. He married the second time on December 26, 1900, while in Chesterfield, to Mrs Laura Perkins, who with the children and her aged mother survive him. Mr Gary was a quite and unassuming, unpretentious man. He never sought notoriety in any way, also preferring to devote his time and attention to his family and business.


GASKILL. Laura Gaskill, 58, wife of John C Gaskill, died at her home in Rosedale, MS. She was born in Water Valley, MS on September 7, 1853. She had been expected to be present at the anniversary celebration here on Sat. She formerly resided here and remains were brought to Jerseyville for burial.


GATES. Lucille Gates, 81, died September 26, 1988, at her residence. Born in Jerseyville, she was the daughter of the late William & Mary (Cole) Handling. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Raymond Robins and Robert Gates. Surviving are 1 daughter, Bonnie Lee White of Bethalto; 1 son, Raymond E Robbins of Bethalto; 5 grandchildren; 9 g-grandchildren; 1 brother, William Handling of Godfrey; and 1 sister, Evelyn Kaleda of Alton. Visitation was at Elias-Smith funeral home in beth Alton, where services were conducted. Rev Kenneth H Dewall officiated. Burial was in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens, Bethalto. Memorials may be given to charity of one’s choice.


GATEWOOD. Edward B Gatewood, 63, was born in Bowling Green, KY on July 10, 1816. He came to Jersey county in 1839 and lived in Otterville. He Married Sarah M (Dougherty) Gatewood, sister of John G and the late Henry D Dougherty. In 1845, they moved to Lexington, MO, where he established a tannery. He then went to Texas in 1849 and back to Illinois in 1858. They were parents of 10 children. Funeral services from Otterville ME Church. Rev George W Farmer officiated. Pallbearers were Wm McAdams Sr, Prosper M Noble, Kersey Cadwalader, Blissful Noble, Allen M Slaten, Charles Campbell.


GAUBTZE. Fred Gaubtze, of St. Louis and about 40 yrs of age, was overcome by heat. A relative of Mrs John Mode, he came up to spend a short vacation. Sunday he took a walk out into the country, arriving at Jos. Sunderland’s about 2 mi from town. He found himself almost overcome with heat and bathed his head, then proceeded of down the road. Shortly afterwards he was found dead. Deputy Coroner Barry was called and an inquest was held. The jury consisted of Dr J S Williams, O D Leach, Lewis Terrell, J D Nugent, M J Dolan and S D Stanley. The returned a verdict of death from natural causes. The remains were sent to St. Louis for interment. He leaves a family.


GAVIN. Ellen Gavin, of Division St, St. Louis on September 30, 1906. The former Ellen Walsh was beloved wife of the late Patrick Gavin, and mother of Mrs Mary Medley, Michael, Rose, Della, Maggie and the late John Gavin. (Published in St. Louis Republic).


GAVIN. James F Gavin, 50, formerly of Jersey county, was killed in an accident in Fairfax, WA. He was employed as a hook tender for a lumber company and was struck by heavy timber. Funeral services were held at St. Francis church with Rev J J Clancy. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery. He was son of the late Mr & Mrs Patrick Gavin of Jersey county and went to the state of Washington 24 yrs ago. He leaves 2 Sister, Mrs Edward Hopkins of Poughkeepsie, NY and Mrs James Gibbons of Jerseyville; 5 brothers, Thomas and Peter of Milwaukee, WI, Joseph of Flint, MI, Phillip of St. Louis, and Patrick of Jerseyville.


GAVIN. Mary Gavin, 84, died at her home on Goodrich St, Jerseyville. Funeral services were held at St. Francis church with Rev J J Clancy. Interment was in St. Francis cemetery. She is survived by 6 sons, James of New York, Joseph of Flint, MI, Philip of St. Louis, Peter and Thomas of Milwaukee, WI, and Patrick of Jerseyville; 2 daughters, Mrs James Gibbons of Jerseyville and Mrs Sarah Hopkins of New York; 2 brothers, Anthony Byrne, who lives in Ireland, Patrick Byrne, Santa Rosa, CA; and 1 sister, Mrs Bridget Mack of Santa Rosa, CA.


GAVIN. Philip a Gavin, 68 yrs, 9 mo, 8 days, a resident of St. Louis for 40 yrs, died January 24, following a long period of hospitalization. He had been an invalid since suffering a hip fracture 2 years ago. Mr Gavin was a son of the late Patrick & Mary (Byrne) Gavin and was born in Jersey county, April 16, 1885. He was a retired custodian in the St. Louis public school system. The deceased is survived by 1 sister, Mrs James P Gibbons, Godfrey; and 1 brother, Peter M Gavin of milwaukee, WI. Visitation was from Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Services were from St. Francis church with Rev J J Clancy and interment was in St. Francis cemetery.


GEARING. Margaret E Gearing, 81, died February 10, 1989, at Elder Care nursing home, Alton. Born in Grafton, she was a daughter of the Late Walter & Mayme (Slaten) Gearing. Surviving is 1 brother, Walter Gearing of Alton. She was preceded in death by 1 sister, Faye Rosalie Bell. Visitation was at gent funeral home, Alton. Rev W Russell Shaw officiated at the service and burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery, Grafton. Memorials may be given to American Cancer Society.


GEARING. Thomas Gearing, 63, died September 17, at Reubel’s hotel in Grafton. He had been under the care of Dr Park, after a fall down stairs. Death was apparently of heart failure. Mr Gearing was born in Marchan, Berkshire, England on May 20, 1840. He joined the Masonic Order in 1872. Services from Masonic Hall with Rev Thero. Burial was in IOOF cemetery.


GEERS. Charles H Geers, a veteran of WWI & WWII, and an employee at Boyd Memorial hospital, died at the hospital where he had been hospitalized for 2 weeks. He was born February 2 , 1898, in Carrollton, a son of the late Albert Geers & Mrs Geers. Surviving are his mother, his widow, Mrs Margaret Geers, to whom he was married April 16, 1935; 2 Daughters, Mrs Mary Kallal, Jerseyville and Miss Martha Geers, Carrollton; 3 Brothers, Francis and Leo, Carrollton, and Vincent of Eureka. Visitation was from Mehl funeral home. Services were from St. John church, and burial was in the church cemetery.


GEERS. William Geers, 67, was interred in St. John cemetery, Carrollton. He is survived by 2 daughters, Anna and Mary; 4 sons, Bernard, Herman, John and Henry; and 5 brothers, Albert, Bernard, George, John and August.


GEHLHAUSEN. Paul Gehlhausen, 68, died at his home in the east part of Jerseyville. He had been bedfast for 3 1/2 months. The funeral was held at St. John church Rev Fr Hyman of Greenfield officiating. Burial was in Catholic cemetery. Casket bearers were Frank Gehlhausen, John Sethaler, August Zipprich, Frank Sefrig, Perry Wood Jr, and Norbert Gehlhausen. Flower bearers were Mary and Martha Carmody, Gladys Taylor and Margaret Gehlhausen. Paul was a son of Mr & Mrs John Henry Gehlhausen, and was born in Ferdinand, IN, May 27, 1872. He married Eva (Wood) Gehlhausen and were married 37 yrs. Surviving are his wife, and 1 daughter, Mrs Harold Carmody, of Jerseyville. 2 other children, 1 nephew, Frank Gehlhausen, and Erma Scoggins, grew up and were given a parent’s care in his home. He leaves 1 Sister, Mrs Elizabeth Rawe, of Colorado Springs, CO; 4 brother, Len Gehlhausen of St. Louis, Herman of Michael, Joe of Meppen, and Tony of Carrollton. Mr Gehlhausen came to Illinois when 18 and had been a farmer all his life. He had lived on what is known as the Seely Mill farm northwest of Carrollton for 20 years and moved to Jerseyville when his health compiled him to retire.


GEHRKE. Sarah Frances Gehrke, 80, of Jerseyville, died December 30 at Jersey County Memorial hospital. Final rites were held January 2 at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Robert L Heintz officiated and burial was in Valhalla Memorial park, Godfrey. She was born in Elsbery, MO, September 17, 1894, a daughter of Samuel & Eliza (Pointsalot) Laird. Her husband, Edward Gehrke, died in Dec, 1967. She is survived by 2 Sons, Harry Gehrke of Alton and Samuel Gehrke of Fieldon; 1 daughter, Miss Louise Gehrke of Jerseyville; 6 grandchildren; 10 g-grandchildren; and 1 brother, John Laird of Alton.


GEIL. Bertha E Geil, 53 yrs, 6 mo, 5 days, died June 1, at her residence of north Lafayette St, Jerseyville. She had been seriously ill since undergoing major surgery several weeks ago. Visitation was at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Services were held at first Baptist church with Rev Carl C Moman officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. She was a daughter of the late John M & Sarah (Mains) Grizzle and she was born in Jersey county on November 26, 1904. Surviving are her husband of 28 yrs; 2 sons, Gordon who is receiving basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, and Gregory of Jerseyville; 5 sister, Mrs Logan Pruitt, Kane, Mrs Muriel Crane, Jerseyville, Mrs John Isringhausen of Boyleston, Alabama, Mrs Charles Wood of Granite City, and Mrs Anna Daniels of Alton; and 2 Brothers, Freeman Grizzle of Jerseyville and Truman Grizzle of Kane. Mrs Geil was a past Worthy Matron of the Jerseyville Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and she was a member of the Jerseyville Woman’s Club, Mothers Circle of the Demolay Chapter and First Baptist church of Jerseyville.


GEIL. Oliver F Geil, 74, a resident of Greenwood Manor, died at Jersey County Memorial hospital, February 20. Services were conducted at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev Clay Noah officiated and burial was Oak Grove cemetery. Born in Belleville October 2, 1906, he was a son of the late Ferdinand & Ida (Werner) Geil. Prior to his retirement he owned and operated an automobile dealership in Jerseyville. He was a member of First Baptist church, Jerseyville Masonic Lodge #394 AF & AM and Ainad Shriners of East St. Louis. Surviving are 2 sons, Gordon of East Alton and Gregory of Chesterfield, MO; 4 grandsons; 1 brother, Eugene, Oceanside, CA; 1 sister, Amelia Dooling of San Diego, CA. His wife, Bertha (Grizzle) Geil, died in June, 1958, 1 brother and 1 sister preceded him in death. Memorials may be given to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, St. Louis. Masonic services were held at the funeral home.


GEISLER. Charles C Geisler, 70, of Murrayville, Water Superintendent for Murrayville-Woodson Water Commission, died Thursday at Passavant hospital. He was born in Jersey county May 2, 1903, a son of the late Henry & Jessie (Cairns) Geisler. He married Sally (Hinman) Geisler June 15, 1969. Surviving are his wife; 2 stepdaughters, Susan Ashby of Jacksonville and Mrs Richard (Bonnie) Lindsey of Murrayville; and 3 step grandchildren, Robin and Jennifer Ashby and Jason Lindsey; 2 brothers, Lester of Brighton and Edmond of Medora; 2 sister, Mrs Florence Miller of Jerseyville and Helen Muffley of Brighton; 6 nieces and 13 nephews. He was preceded in death by 1 brother, Herman. Mr Geisler was a member of – incomplete.


GEISLER. Christ Geisler, 83, died at the county farm. The remains were taken to the home of his stepson, Charles Siller of Brighton. His son Fred had jumped from a hay loft onto a pitchfork, causing his death. Mr Geisler had become despondent over the event and death of his son. He was buried at Brighton beside his wife who died October 20. He leaves 1 Son, G Geisler of Chicago; 1 daughter, Mrs Oswald Hanold of Piasa Township; 2 stepsons; 1 step daughter and 1 brother, William Geisler.


GEISLER. Elizabeth Nancy Geisler, 82 yrs, 10 mo, 5 days, d November 3, at Jersey County Memorial hospital. She had been a patient for 2 days. She was the widow of Frederick Geisler. Visitation and services were from Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev John K O’dell, Pastor of Bethel Methodist church, where she was a member, officiated and burial was in East Newbern cemetery. She was a daughter of the late George & Nancy (Bell) Laubscher and was born in Jersey county December 28, 1883. She had resided at Dow for 33 yrs. Surviving are 4 sons, Frederick, Hardin, Raymond L, Jerseyville, and Ralph D and Francis H Geisler of Dow; 10 grandchildren; 13 g-grandchildren; and 3 brothers, George and Herbert Laubscher, Dow and Marion Laubscher of Brighton. Her parents, and 1 daughter, Mary E Wills, preceded her in death.


GEISLER. Lester C Geisler Jr, 43 of Shipman died August 28 at St Luke hospital, St. Louis. Funeral services were held at Warner funeral home, Brighton. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey. He was born October 25, 1928 in Jersey county the son of Mr & Mrs Lester Geisler, sr, who survive. He was a mechanic for Southwestern school district and formerly worked for Rathgeb Brothers, Brighton. Surviving are his wife, Jessie (Bock) Geisler; his parents; 4 daughters, Mrs Steve Trochuck, Shipman, Mrs James Clendenny, Jerseyville, Mrs Dan Kelly, New Mexico and Mrs George Puskar, Medora; 1 brother, Warren Geisler, Brighton; 2 sisters, Mrs John Gotter, Brighton and Mrs Otto Nurnburger, Jerseyville; and 5 grandchildren.


GEISLER. Lester William Geisler, 84, died January 6, 1986, at his home in rural Brighton. He was born in Brighton, son of the late Henry & Jessie (Cairns) Geisler. He was a farmer and truck driver, and had made a career of music, playing various instruments including the violin and banjo. He played for many area organizations, and from 1950-58, he and 4 other musicians were known as the Les Geisler band. On December 24, 1920, in Hardin, he Married Edna Marie (Boker) Geisler. She preceded him in death September 10, 1984. Surviving are 1 son, Warren Geisler of Rose Hill, MS; 2 daughters, Marie Nurnberger and Pauline Gotter, both of Brighton; 13 grandchildren; 29 g-grandchildren; and 2 sister, Helen Muffley of Brighton and Florence Miller of Jerseyville. Visitation was from Warner-Targhetta funeral home, Brighton. Services were held there by Rev Henry Lippert. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial park, Godfrey. Memorials may be given to St. John United Church of Christ in Brighton, where he was a member.


GEISLER. Ralph D Geisler, 62, died October 27, at his home in rural Dow. Funeral rites were held October 29, from Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev James Baker of the Jerseyville Assembly of God church of Grafton officiated. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey. He was born June 7, 1912 in Jersey county the son of Frederick & Elizabaeth (Laubscher) Geisler. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy T Geisler; 1 Daughter, Mrs Michael (Rhonda) Woods , Mt Carmel; 3 brothers, Fred of Hardin, Raymond, Jerseyville and Francis, Alton; 4 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 daughter, and 1 granddaughter. Memorials may be given to Jersey County Heart Fund.


GEISLER. Raymond Luther Geisler, 75, of Jerseyville, died December 26, at John Cochran hospital, St. Louis. Services were from Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Wayne Pendleton officiated and burial was in East Newbern cemetery. The WWII veteran was born in Jersey county January 6, 1907, a son of Fred & Elizabeth (Laubscher) Geisler and was a self-employed truck driver. He is survived by 2 brothers, Fred of Jerseyville and Francis of Alton. His wife was the late Lela (Catt) Geisler. Memorials may be given to Boys State, Dept of Illinois.


GENT. Dorothy J Gent, 66, former Elsah resident, died February 8, 1990, at St Anthony hospital, Alton. She was a member of Elsah Methodist church. In 1985, she retired as a cook from Principia College in Elsah, after 45 yrs service. Born in Alton, she was the daughter of the late Ed & Mary Elizabaeth (Rister) Bates. On September 16, 1950, she married Richard a Gent. He died August 10, 1976. Surviving are 2 daughters, Donna Gent of Alton and Elizabeth Gent, Jerseyville; 3 granddaughters; 1 half brother, Frances Spriggs of Alton; and 3 sisters, Mary Schnieder of Alton, Viola Curry of East Alton and Betty Connor of Norfolk, VA. 2 brothers preceded her in death. Visitation and services were from Gent funeral home, Alton. Rev Wilbur Reinhardt officiated and burial was in Elsah cemetery.


GENTRY. Myrtle Frona Gentry, 70, died July 1, 1989, at Lakeview Hospital in Oregon. She was born in Rosedale, daughter of the late William Preston & Lula (Davis) Franz. Surviving are her husband, Layton Gentry; 1 daughter, Karen Angelo of New Pine Creek; 1 grandchild; and 2 sisters, Vivian St Clair of Molalla, OR, and Beulah Mawhinney of Bend, OR. 1 sister, Prudence Beilsmith, preceded her in death. Services were conducted at Pine Creek Baptist church, OR. Burial was in New Pine Creek cemetery.


GEORGEVITS. Pete Georgevits Sr, 73, of R 2 Godfrey, died July 15 at St. Joseph hospital, Alton. He was born March 11, 1905 in Czechoslovakia, a son of George & Catherine Georgevits. His wife, Leona (Davenport) Georgevits, preceded him in death. Surviving are 1 son, Pete Jr, Alton; 4 brothers, John & Joseph Georgevits, Godfrey, George, Alton and Raymond, Rosewood Heights; and 1 sister, Marie Koteff of Canton, OH. GEORGEWITZ. John H Georgewitz, 73, owner of Georgewitz Construction company, died December 18, at Firmin Desloge University hospital, St. Louis. He was born April 10, 1909 in Jersey county, a son of John & Katherine Georgewitz and had been retired for 8 yrs, after being in business for 40 yrs. Surviving are his wife, Jennie (Weber) Georgewitz whom he married in 1936; 2 daughters, Maryln Hazen, Tampa, FL, Nancy Georgwitz, Godfrey; 4 sons, Robert, Richard, and Roger, all of Godfrey, and Denis of Kent, WA; 17 grandchildren; 4 g-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Joseph, Godfrey, George, Alton and Raymond, East Alton; 1 sister, Marie Kotaff, Cathon, OH. Services were held December 21 at Gent chapel, Alton with Rev Fr James Hill officiating. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey. Memorials may be given to Heart Fund.


GERARDI. Eleanor Gerardi, 14, daughter of Mr & Mrs Joseph Gerardi of Ofallon, formerly of Jerseyville, was struck and fatally injured by a train. The child was walking home from school on the Baltimore & Ohio tracks which are located near her home and close to the school. She was accompanied by several school children and when they were within a quarter mile of her home, she was struck by the rear car of a train which was switching. Her body was dragged about 75 ft. When picked up by the train men she was still alive and they rushed her to O’fallon to the office of Dr H F Bechtold, where she died a short time later. Dr Bechtold said her death was due to the loss of blood. The flesh of her left limb was torn off to the ankle where her foot had been severed. She also sustained severe bruises on the chest and a deep gash in her back. The Gerardi family was well know in Jersey county where they lived until about 4 yrs ago. While here they resided about 2 miles south of Jerseyville on State Road, on the farm now occupied by Martin Walsh. The many friends of the family in Jerseyville will regret to hear of the fatal accident and the sympathy of the community is extended to the family.


GERBAN. Joseph Gerban, 89, of Springfield died at Calhoun comprehensive care, Hardin. Funeral rites were held at St. Francis church with Father R T Shea officiating. Interment was in St. Francis cemetery. He was born June 21, 1883 in Lindberg, Poland, and was a general laborer. There are no survivors. Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville was in charge of arrangements.


GERMAN. John George German, 62 yrs, 7 mo, 28 days, a farmer of the Delhi vicinity, died June 10, at Boyd Memorial hospital, Carrollton where he had been a patient for 9 days. He was a son of the late Charles & Sophia German and was born October 12, 1888, at Sidney, NE. He had been a resident of Jersey county for many years. Surviving are his wife, Frona German; 3 daughters, Mrs Richard Hutchinson and Mrs Victor White of Dow and Mrs William Mc Gill of Wood River; 4 sons, John W German of Redondo Beach, CA, George German, Fieldon, Arthur German, Waukegan, and James German, Godfrey; 16 grandchildren and 1 g-granddaughter; 4 sisters, Mrs Martha Facht of Dalton, NE, Mrs Arthur Smith of Lamar, MO, Mrs Hannah Fields of Springfield and Mrs John W Adams of Urora; 1 brother, Louis German of Waverly; 4 step sons, Ervin Meeks of Canton, Ernest Meeks of Carouthersville, MO, Emil Scoggins of Fieldon and Middleton Scoggins, Rockbridge; 5 step daughters, Mrs Teddie Gardner, Hamburg, Mrs Clark Miller, Jerseyville, Mrs Alfred Glowner of Carouthersville, MO, Mars Charles Scott and Mrs George Talley Jr, Fieldon. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville on June 12. Rev F W Schwarzlose, pastor of the Methodist church, officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.


GERSON. Mrs Gerson, 84, died January 13, at the home of her son Charles Gerson, 3 miles southwest of Fieldon. Rev Martin had services at Fieldon Lutheran church. She leaves 3 sons, John, William and Charles; 1 daughter, Mrs Mary Krause. She was born in Germany in 1813 and came to the US in 1873.


GERSON. Anna Elizabeth Gerson, 73, of Jerseyville, died July 3, at Jersey County Memorial hospital. Funeral services were held at United Church of Christ in Fieldon. Rev William Smith officiated and burial was in Fieldon cemetery. She was born May 23, 1901 in Jersey county, daughter of the late William F Miller & Elizabeth (Baum) Miller. Her husband was the late Edward Gerson. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the United Church of Christ of Fieldon. She is survived by 4 Sons, Fred of St. Louis, Clayton of Hardin, Howard of Fifeldon and Stanley of Phoenix, AZ; also 12 grandchildren and 2 g-grandchildren.


GERSON. Bessie I Gerson, 82, of Wood River, died at Jersey County Memorial hospital. Born in Dow, daughter of the late Henry & Hattie (Gisy) Hooper, she was married to Frank K Gerson on November 26, 1925. He preceded her in death. Surviving are 1 Daughter, Doris Nelson of Dow; 1 grandson; and 1 sister, Dorothy Thompson of Jerseyville. Visitation was at Marks Mortuary in Wood River. Funeral from First United Methodist Church, Wood River with Rev David Myers officiating. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey. Memorials may be given to the church where she was a member.


GERSON. Charles T Gerson, 93, a self employed farmer, died February 23, 1989 at Jersey County Memorial hospital. The WWII army veteran had retired from farming in 1985. Born in Jersey county, he was the son of the late John & Emilie (Krugel) Gerson. His Wife, Florence E (Widman) Gerson, died December 18, 1962. Only nieces and nephews survive. Visitation and services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. William Baughman officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Grave side services were held by the Jerseyville American Legion and VFW Post 492. Memorials may be given to Peace United Church of Christ, Jerseyville, where he had been a member.


GERSON. Emilie Gerson, 71, died at her home last week. Funeral was held in Frieden Evangelical Church, Rev W W Wilke officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. She was born in Germany and came to the USA when 14. The WWI veteran is survived by his Wife, Bessie I Gerson, and 1 daughter, Miss Doris Gerson of Dow; 4 sisters, Alvina Gwinner of Alton, Lula Bedinger of Ppoto Mae, Clara Nelson of Dow and Alice Croxford of Grafton, and 1 brother, Charles Addison Gerson of Carrollton. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brother, Albert and Walter. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Mr Gerson was a member of Salem Methodist church at Dow and final rites were held there October 27, with Rev Robert F Brown of Grafton officiating. Interment was in Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey.

GERSON. Hattie (Wieghard) Gerson, 79, of Ashland, KY, a former Wood River resident, died at Elmwood Village Nursing Home in Ashland. Funeral rites were held at St. John United Church of Christ in Wood River with burial in Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey. She was born February 18, 1891 in Fieldon and had lived her early life in Jerseyville. Her Husband, Albert William Gerson, a former Wood River business man, preceded her in death. Rev Leonard Todd of Moro, former Fieldon pastor, officiated and burial was in Fieldon cemetery. Mr Gerson was born in Jersey county August 5, 1883, son of the late Mr & Mrs William Gerson. GERSON. Laura V Gerson, 94, of Godfrey died July 9 at Boyd Memorial hospital, Carrollton. Funeral was from Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Steve Perrin, officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. She was born October 7, 1885 in Kansas, a daughter of Browler & Johanna (Greene) McCalla. Surviving are 2 daughters, Lillian Stiritz of Kane and Edna Reiger of Godfrey; 1 brother, Nathaniel Mccalla of Apache Junction, AZ and 1 sister, Amanda Jenkins of Venice, FL; 5 grandchildren, 8 g-grandchildren and 1 g-g-grandchild. GERSON. Raymond Frederick (Sparky) Gerson, 60, died April 18 at St. Mary hospital in St. Louis following an extended illness. Services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev William Smith and Rev Leonard Todd officiated. Burial was in Fieldon. A feed salesman, he was born April 11, 1915 in Richwood township, Jersey county, a son of Fred & Anna (Krueger) Gerson. He was a member of Fieldon Masonic Lodge, Jerseyville Moose Lodge and had been treasurer of the Fieldon Business Booster Club for 20 yrs. He was a member of Fieldon United Church of Christ. Surviving are his widow, Irene (Busch) Gerson; 1 son, Gary Gerson of Alton; 1 daughter, Renee Gerson, Fieldon; and 2 sisters, Mrs Lawrence (Ruth) Erwin of Fieldon and Mrs Verne (Mildred) Williamson of Alton. Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Masonic services were conducted Sat eve.


GERSON. Ulrica Gerson, 92 yrs, 9 mo, 7 days, a former Jersey county resident, died October 3, at Alton Memorial hospital where she had been moved for treatment earlier. She had been bedfast for 11 months. Mrs Gerson, a daughter of the late Mr & Mrs Joseph Kappel, was born in Jersey county, December 26, 1861. She married Charles Gerson and he died in 1905. For the past 11 years she had made her home in Alton with a daughter, Mrs Alvena Gwinner. Also surviving are 3 more daughters, Mrs Roy Bedinger of Potomac, Mrs Arthur Nelson of Dow and Mrs Harold Croxford of Grafton; 2 sons, Frank Gerson of Dow and C a Gerson of Carrollton; 14 grandchildren and 7 g-grandchildren. The body was brought to the Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Services were held at the funeral home October 6. Rev Fred Johnson of St. Louis officiated and interment was in Newbern cemetery.

GERSON. William F Gerson, 82, of Golden Eagle, died April 20, 1975 at Garnet’s Chateau, Jerseyville. Final rites were held April 22, at St Mathews Lutheran Church, Brussels and burial was in church cemetery. Military rites were conducted at graveside. The WWI veteran was born March 18, 1893, in Richwood township, a son of John & Amelia (Kruegel) Gerson. He had been engaged in farming. He was born in Jersey county, April 12, 1865, a son of the late O D & Rebecca Ann (Allen) Gettings. Mr Gettings is survived by 1 daughter, Mrs Ione Shackelford, Jerseyville; 2 sons, William A Gettings, Eldred and James N Gettings, Grafton; 16 grandchildren; 12 g-grandchildren; and 1 sister, Mrs Jane Dempsey, St. Louis. 1 son and 1 daughter, died in infancy. GETTINGS. Linnie Annette Gettings, 47 Yrs, 4 Mo, 11 Days, Wife of James Newton Gettings of rural Grafton, died October 30 at Barnes hospital, St. Louis. She had ben in failing health for sometime and had been seriously ill for 2 wks. She had been a patient at Boyd Memorial hospital in Carrollton 4 days before transferring to Barnes. Final rites were held at First Baptist church in Fieldon, November 2, with Rev Claud Evans of Bethalton officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Mrs Gettings was a daughter of Mrs Mary (Murray) Weeks of Jerseyville and the late Marshall T Weeks. She was born at Eddyville, KY June 19, 1912. Surviving are her husband, 4 sons, Pvt James Robert Gettings, Ozias David Gettings and Hugh Edward Gettings of Grafton and Isaac Leroy Gettings of Dow, 2 daughters, Miss Lyda Kathleen Gettings and Miss Carol Sue Gettings of Grafton, her mother Mrs Mae Weeks; 1 sister, Mrs Earl Deuel, of Jerseyville and 2 brothers, Robert L Weeks of Jerseyville and Jesse Weeks of Phoenix, az; and 1 grandson.


GETTINGS. Ozias Gettings, (Isaac Gettings), 90, died at his home 3 miles north of Grafton in the Shiloh vicinity. He was a veteran of 2 wars, having served in both the Civil & Mexican conflicts, and lived to see his country victorious, with the allies, over the greatest military power in all history. Most of his long life was spent in the Grafton vicinity, Jersey county, where he had been engaged in farming. His wife preceded him in death; 8 children survive. Funeral services were held at Salem church with rev —- of Grafton officiating and interment was in Salem cemetery. (More info that is in question.) November 1917 — O D Gettings; son, I N Gettings and daughter Miss Ione Gettings, left Jerseyville Tuesday morning for Quincy, Where O D Gettings, Jersey county’s only veteran of the Mexican war, was to enter the national home for soldiers. The elder Mr Gettings, wo is 88 yrs old enlisted in the army for services in Mexico at New Orleans. He was mustered out of service at Pueblo, Mexico, 69 yrs ago, having served 14 months in Mexico during which time he went from Vera Cruz to Mexico City which was captured by the USs troops. It took him 1 month, 17 days to reach New Orleans from Vera Cruz where he and his comrades boarded the old ship Constitution to sail for home. Mr Gettings is a native in 1849 and to Jersey county in 1863. Isaac Gettings, 90, died at his home near Shiloh. He was a civil war veteran. Funeral was from his home with burial in Shiloh cemetery.


GETTINGS, Ozias Denton, born 13-06-1829, Tennessee, died 15-01-1. William Albert Gettings, 85, was found dead at his residence on January 9. His death was unexpected. Services were held at Fieldon UCC by Rev Robert Broeder. The retired Greene & Jersey county farmer was born October 29, 1896 in Jersey county, a son of Isaac & Ella (Gowin) Gettings. He was a Mason for 64 yrs and a member of the Shriners. His wife, Hazel (Crull) Gettings, died in 1979. Surviving are 4 Sons, Jacob Denton and Robert Lee of Jerseyville, William of Fieldon and Kermit Dale of Eldred; 1 daughter, Mary Margauerite Sinclair of Jerseyville; 1 brother, Newton Gettings and Ione Shackelford of Jerseyville; 15 grandchildren and 5 g-grandchildren. Masonic services were conducted by Fieldon Lodge #592 at the funeral home. Burial was in Fieldon cemetery. Memorials may be given to Fieldon UCC.


GETTY. Robert Getty, 78, died at the home of his nephew, C W Kellogg 1 mile south of McClusky. Short service at the home and body sent to Galva, IL for burial.


GETTY. Robert Getty was born in Madison County, New York, in 1827, and died nearJerseyville, Ill., Feb. 22, 1905. At an early age he became a sailor, andin pursuit of that vocation visited almost every port of importance inthe world. At the beginning of the Civil War he abandoned the sea; andcoming to Galva began farming with his father, Thomas Getty, and brotherCharles. In 1876 they moved to a cotton plantation near Athens, Ala. In afew years the aged father and mother were laid to rest. In 1899 thebrothers, accompanied by their sister, Mrs. Gertrude Spencer, and nephew,Chas. Kellogg; returned to Illinois, settling on a farm in MadisonCounty, and afterward removing to Jersey County, where Mr. Getty died. For the past two years he had been in failing health and suffered frompartial paralysis. Mr. Getty never married. Of a large family only abrother, Charles, now living in the state of Washington, and a sister,Mrs. Gertrude Spencer, living near Jerseyville, now remain. The remains,accompanied by his nephew, Chas. Kellogg, were brought to Galva lastThursday for burial. The Galva Weekly News, Thursday, March 02, 1905.


GHERE. Willis “Tub” Ghere, 67, of Brighton died June 21, at St. Joseph hospital, Alton. Services were held at Warner-Targhetta funeral home, Brighton. Burial was in Brighton cemetery. Born in Tamms, he was a son of the late Samuel L& Nancy (Thompson) Ghere. He operated Ghere & Sons Auto Body Repair in Brighton for 40 yrs. Surviving are his wife, Georgia (Martin) Ghere; 3 sons, Bill and Pat, both of Brighton, and Larry of East Alton; 5 grandchildren; 2 sisters, 2 brothers, and 2 half brothers.

GIBBONS. Dorothy M Gibbons, 66, of Jerseyville, d February 17, at St. Joseph hospital, Alton. Funeral mass was celebrated February 19, at Holy Ghost Church with Fr Robert L Heintz celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery. Mrs Gibbons concluded her 50th year with Jerseyville Motor company last month and was honored at an informal reception at the company on January 30. She was born October 24, 1908. A daughter of the Late John & Carolyn (Miller) Middleton. Her husband, John F Gibbons, died July 23, 1972. She is survived by 1 Son, John Patrick Gibbons of RR 1, Dow; 1 daughter, Mrs Michael (Barbara) Mossman of RR 4, Jerseyville; 4 sisters, Elsie Spriggs, Jerseyville, Mrs Frank (Polly) Harruff , Kirkwood, MO, Mrs Robert (Hattie) Boner, Trenton, NE, and Mrs George (Vera) Bomgardner of Yuba City, CA; 1 Brother, Walther Middleton of Oxford, NE; 6 grandchildren. 4 brothers and 1 half sister preceded her in death. GIBBONS. Edward P Gibbons, 66, of Webster Groves, MO, died December 6, at St. John hospital in St. Louis after an illness of more than 1 year. Mr Gibbons was born at Delhi on July 19, 1888. He was a son of the late Mr & Mrs James Gibbons. He had been associated with the firm of Rice-Stix Dry Goods company in St. Louis for 37 yrs and was sales manager for several years until his illness caused him to retire. He is survived by 5 children, 4 daughters, sister Edwardine of St Joseph Hospital in Hancock, MI, Bernadette and Doris Jean, who resided with their father, Mrs John Applebaum; 1 son, Vincent Gibbons of St. Louis; 4 brothers, John F Gibbons, Joseph F Gibbons of Delhi, William of Alton and James of Godfrey; and 2 sisters, Miss Celia Gibbons, Delhi and Mrs Annie Gaul of Godfrey. His wife, Catherine Gibbons died in 1941. Funeral services were held December 9, from the Church of the Annunciation to Calvary cemetery.


GIBBONS. Mrs Hannora Gibbons, 80, died at the Nazareth home in Alton January 27. The remains were brought to Jerseyville to the home of her son, Martin Gibbons, on Sun afternoon. Funeral was held from St. Francis church January 30. Interment was in St. Francis cemetery.


Gibbons. James Gibbons Sr., 74, one of Jersey county’s oldest citizens, died at home in Delhi. He was born in Co Mayo, Ireland and came to America in 1863. He had lived in Jersey county 44 yrs. Funeral from St. Francis church. 5 of his sons were pallbearers and at his request his grandson Pvt Matthew Walsh of Camp Greenleaf, GA. He leaves his wife, Mary, 10 children; 5 sons, John, William, James Jr, Jerseyville, Pvt Joseph Gibbons of US Guards of Brooklyn, NY; 5 daughters, Cecelia Gibbons, and Mrs Annie Gaul of Delhi, Mrs John L Walsh of Dow, Mrs Catherine Knight of Alton, and Margaret Gibbons of St. Louis; 1 sister, Mra Addis McCarthy of Alton; 14 grandchildren. His death is the first break in the family circle.


GIBBONS. James H “Herb” Gibbons, 75, died December 26, 1989, at St Anthony hospital, after a lengthy illness. He was an automobile and truck salesman for 49 yrs retiring in 1982 as the general manager of Hoefert Dodge in Alton. He was a former Alton city alderman and a member of the Alton Housing Authority. Born in Jerseyville, he was the son of the Late James P & Bessie (Owens) Gibbons. He married Maurietta (Collins) Gibbons on March 4, 1936, in Wood River. She survives also surviving are 2 daughters, Particia “Trish” Mckaig of Godfrey and Mary K Eckhouse, Alton; 2 sons, James H Gebbons Jr and D W “Bill” Gibbons both of Alton; 14 grandchildren; 6 g-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Paul Gibbons, Muscoda, WI and Patrick Gibbons, Mercer Island, WA; 5 sisters, T’ann Krepel and Katherine Hackworth, both of Alton, Dorothy Haegele of Elsah, Eileen Allen of Grafton and Agnes Schell, Jerseyville. Preceding him in death were 1 sister, Mary Margaret Hickey; and his step mother, Katerine (Gavin) Gibbons. Visitation was at Elias-Smith funeral home, Godfrey, with rosary recitation. Funeral mass was at St. Mary Catholic church, Alton with Monsignor James a Suddes and Rev Wm Hembrow as concelebrants. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery. Memorials may be given to mass cards, church restoration fund or Marquette high school, Alton.


GIBBONS. John Gibbons, 59, passed away Friday at the home of his sister, Mrs Addie McCarthy in Alton. Before his stay with his sister, he was a resident of Granite City. The corpse was taken to Jerseyville for interment at the Catholic cemetery after Rev J J Driscoll had conducted the obsequies at St. Francis church. He leaves 5 sons; 1 brother and 1 sister.


GIBBONS. John Francis Gibbons, 74, died at his home in Jerseyville. He had suffered from a heart ailment for several years. He had watched the 10 o’clock news on tv and had gone into the kitchen when he suffered the fatal attack. Mr Gibbons had been an attorney in Jerseyville since 1936 and Treasurer of the Jersey County Republican Committee for 37 yrs. He was son of the late Martin & Margaret (Wall) Gibbons on December 13, 1897. He served with the US Marine corps and was in the Dominican Republic from July, 1918- December 1919. He was educated in the Jerseyville schools and received his KBCS and LLB degrees from St louis University in St. Louis. During his law practice in Jerseyville, attorney Gibbons had been a partner of attorney Hugh W Cross, Judge Harold Clark and the late attorneyy W F Hacker. Recently he had been associated with Robert Mckechan. He was a member of the Illinois Bar Association, Jersey county Bar Association, K of C, Elks Lodge and American Legion. He was a past Exalted Ruler and past Dist Deputy of the Elks, past Commander of the Legion and past Pres of the Tri-Co Bar Association. Mr Gibbons had also served as Master in Chancery in Jersey county. Requiem mass was celebrated at St. Francis church by Rev Father R T Shea and burial was in St. Francis cemetery. Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy (Middleton) Gibbons, 1 son, John Patrick Gibbons of Dow; 1 daughter, Mrs Michael (Barbara) Mossman of Kampsville; 5 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Sister Loretta Marie of Chicago and Mrs Anthony Peters of St. Louis. His parents, 1 sister, Mildred, and 3 brothers, Gregory, Marcus and Fr Marion Gibbons preceded him in death. The offices in the Jersey county courthouse were closed for the funeral hours. Memorials may be given to St. Francis building fund.


GIBBONS. Joseph Gregory Gibbons, 13, died at the home of his Parents, Mr & Mrs Martin Gibbons, Jerseyville. Cause of death was influenza. Private services were held from St. Francis church with Rev J J Clancy officiating. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery. He had served as a carrier for the Democrat. His sister Mildred preceded him in death.


GIBBONS. Katherine Ellen Gibbons, 86, of rural Brighton died December 28, at Elder Care nursing home, Alton. Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville where rosary was recited Sun eve. Funeral mass was held December 31, at St. Francis Church, Rev R T Shea celebrant. Born October 30, 1887 in Jersey county, she was daughter of Patrick & Mary (Byrne) Gavin. Her husband was the late James P Gibbons. She is survived by 5 daughters, Mrs Katherine Hackworth and Mrs Teresa Ann Krepel of Alton, Mrs Dorothy Haegele of Godfrey, Mrs Eileen Allen of Grafton and Mrs Agness Schell of Jerseyville; 3 sons, J Herbert Gibbons of Alton, Paul F Gibbons, Muscoda, WI, and L Patrick Gibbons , Burlinganie, CA; 52 grandchildren; 23 g-grandchildren. Her husband and 1 daughter preceded her in death.


GIBBONS. Sister Loretta Marie Gibbons, Op, 80, died June 19, 1992 at Sacred Heart Convent Infirmary, Springfield. Sister entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters in 1932 and pronounced her religious vows in 1935. She earned her bachelor and master’s degrees in music, and taught music to elementary students for 20 yrs in CA and IL schools. For 34 years, she was teacher, choir director and organist at St Norbert School, Hardin and schools in Chicago, Aurora and Duluth, MN. She retired in 1989. Born in Jerseyville, she was a daughter of the late Martin & Margaret (Wall) Gibbons. Nieces and nephews survive. Preceding her in death were 2 sisters, Mildred Gibbons and Veronica Peters; and 4 brothers, Marcus, Gregory, John and Rev Marion Gibbons. Funeral mass was celebrated at Scared Heart Convent Chapel and burial was in St. Francis cemetery. Kirlin-Egan & Butler funeral home in Springfield handled arrangements.


GIBBONS. Marcus L (Gibby) Gibbons, 68, of Alton, died at St Anthony hospital, Alton. He had been in ill health for several and seriously ill for the last 3 months. Mr Gibbons was born November 6, 1902 in Jerseyville and graduated from the Jerseyville schools. He had served as a parish usher for 32 yrs and was a member of the Parish Holy Name and Purgatorial Societies at St. Mary church. He was a member of the K of C, Alton Council, where he had served as a financial secretary for a number of years. He retired from Alton Box Board company in 1967. He was the son of the late Mr & Mrs Martin Gibbons. Surviving are his wife, Florence (Fitsche) Gibbons; 2 sons, Martin of St. Louis and John of Godfrey; 2 daughters, Sister Mary Gabriel, Osf of St Anthony Hospital and Miss Margaret Gibbons, at home; 3 grandchildren and 2 step grandchildren; 1 brother, Attorney John F Gibbons of Jerseyville; 2 sisters, Mrs Anthony Peters, St. Louis and Sister Loretta Marie Gibbons, Po of Pana. 2 brothers, 1 sister and 1 son preceded him in death. Requiem a mass was celebrated at St. Mary catholic church, Alton and burial was in St Joseph cemetery.


GIBBONS. Martin Gibbons, retired businessman, died January 10. Mr Gibbons had engaged in the meat processing business in Jerseyville, operating Hanle-gibbons Meat Market in partnership with the Late J T Hanley. He later was sole owner.


GIBBONS. Miss Mildred Agnes Gibbons, 22, died at the home of her Parents, Mr & Mrs Martin Gibbons of Jerseyville. Private funeral services were held from St. Francis church with Rev J J Clancy. She had worked at the office at International Shoe.


Gibbons. Joseph F Gibbons, 81, of R1 Jerseyville, died July 2, at St Joseph hospital Alton. Funeral mass was celebrated July 4, at St. Francis church. Rev R T Shea was celebrant and burial was St. Francis cemetery. A retired farmer, he was born December 30, 1890 in Jersey county the son of James & Mary (Flaherty) Gibbons. He was a WWI veteran. His only survivors are nieces and nephews. Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville.


GIBBS. James Gibbs, 45, of Cleveland, OH died there and the remains were returned to Jerseyville for burial. Funeral by Rev Driscoll and Mee (?) at St. Francis church. He was reared in Jerseyville, where he learned the marble cutting trade. He moved to Cleveland, and then returned to St. Louis, where illness overtook him. He is survived by his widow and 4 children. Also surviving are: Miss Katie Duggan, John Duggan and Mrs Richard Allen, cousins of the Jerseyville vicinity.


GIBERSON. J M Giberson, a member of Elsah Lodge No 269 IOOF departed this life February 16, 1914.


GIBSON. Frances (Fanny) Gibson, 99, died September 15 at Greenwood Manor nursing home. Funeral services were held September 18 at First Baptist church, Jerseyville. Rev Willard Foote officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs Gibson, the widow of Wesley Gibson, died in 1964. She was born November 26, 1878 a daughter of John & Minnie (Edkhard) Schnieder. She was preceded in death by 5 brothers & 6 sisters. Surviving are 1 son, Francis Gibson, Jerseyville; 1 daughter, Mrs Ruth Busch of Cuba, MO; 6 grandchildren and 15 g-grandchildren. Memorials may be given to First Baptist church of Jerseyville.


GIBSON. Francis Wesley “Hoot” Gibson, 73, of Jerseyville died May 1 at Garnet’s Chateau nursing home. Services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev V Clay Noah officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Born November 17, 1911 in Jersey county, he was the son of the late Wesley & Frances (Schnieder) Gibson. He was a truck driver for Olin for 38 yrs, retiring December 31, 1974. He was a member of the Jerseyville Eagles, American Legion, VFW and a past Exalted Ruler of Elks. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn V (Green) Gibson whom he married July 24, 1948; 1 son, Bruce Gibson, Jerseyville; and 1 stepson, Robert Beck of Tahlequeh, OK; 1 daughter, Mary Kay Klunk, Jerseyville; 1 sister, Ruth Evelyn Busch, Cuba, MO; and 9 grandchildren. Memorials may be given to American Cancer Society.


GIBSON. Harry Lee Gibson, 69, died November 26, at his residence on R3 Jerseyville. Services were conducted at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Robert Broeder officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He was born July 14, 1914 at Potosi, MO to the Late Fred & Mae (Mercer) Gibson and was in law enforcement in Jersey county. Surviving are his wife, Faye (Ferguson) Gibson, whom he married on March 11, 1966 in Jerseyville; 2 daughters, Phyllis Gibson and Lois Lyles, of Jerseyville; 1 brother, Chester of Potosi, MO; 2 sisters, Bernice Watkins and Geneva Hill, both of Pueblo, CO; and 8 grandchildren. Memorials may be given to the Heart Fund.


GIBSON. Ronald L Gibson, 52, died unexpectedly on November 27, 1987, at Christian hospital ne in, St. Louis co. Gibson was a school teacher at Jersey County Memorial high school in Jerseyville, where he taught government and social studies for many years. He was born in Camp Point, IL, the son of Lloyd Gibson of Camp Point and the late Reva (Hanke) Gibson. Gibson served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict and married Carolyn (Winkler) Gibson on August 20, 1961, in Jerseyville. She survives. In addition to his wife and father, surviving is his son, Mark Gibson of Jerseyville. 1 brother, Wayne Gibson preceded him in death. Visitation and services were conducted at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Udell Meyers officiated and burial was in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may be given to Jersey County Memorial high school.


GIBSON. William Gibson, 64, of Jerseyville, died December 29, at John Cochran hospital, St. Louis where he had been a patient. The WWI veteran had been in ill health for about 6 years and went to the hospital for frequent check-ups. He was being taken to the hospital by Joe Stamper for examination and enroute suffered a stroke. The decedent, was a son of the Late William & Eunice (Bushnell) Gibson and was born in Bluffdale township, Greene county. As a young man he and his father had operated a saw mill. He had been a resident for 30 years and for a number of years operated a grocery store and fish market. Surviving are 3 sisters, Mrs Clem March, Jerseyville, Mrs Ada Ansell of Wood River and Mrs Jeanette Harenstein, Overland, MO; and 1 brother, Carl Gibson of Richland, WA. Military rites were conducted December 31, at the Funeral Chapel at 5611 S Grand Ave, St. Louis and burial was in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, MO.


GIER. Viola G Gier, 93, d April 23 in Santa Anna, CA. She was born June 10, 1892, in Jersey county to the late Mr & Mrs Tom Hourning. She moved to Santa Barbara, CA, in 1942 and worked as a private nurse for 30 years. She was a longtime member of Gold Star Mothers. Surviving are 2 daughter, Wanda Hancock, Santa Anna and Lenora K Mccollom of San Luis Obispo, CA; 2 sisters, Mrs Florence Waters and Mrs Hazel Davis both of Jerseyville; 1brother Melvin Mourning of AZ; 8 grandchildren; and 8 g-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, who died in Korea in 1951.


GIERS. Mrs Webster Giers, who died last winter in Little Rock, AR, has been laid to rest in Noble cemetery, Otterville; her former home. Her husband, Webster Giers, is making his home with his mother, Mrs Isabelle Giers, at Otterville. The remains were brought to Otterville in compliance with a request made by the decedent before her death.


GIERS. Harold Lambert Giers, 56 yrs, 5 mo, 1 day, operator of a car laundry in Jerseyville, died December 28, at Veterans’ Hospital in Jefferson Barracks, MO, where he had been a patient for 7 months. Mr Giers was a son of the late Dr Louis J & Catherine (Herbert) Giers and was born July 27, 1896 in St. Louis, MO. The WWI veteran is survived by 2 Brothers, Louis W Giers, Jerseyville and Theodore F Giers of Hannibal, MO. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev F W Schwarzlose, pastor of the Methodist church, officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.


GIERS. Herbert Giers, 32, who lived with his parents on S Washington St., Jerseyville, took his own life. Funeral was from the home with Rev H T Bahnsen.


GIERS. Louis William Giers, 75, of the Jerseyville care center, died July 15 at White Hall hospital. He was a son of Louis W & Catherine (Herbert) Giers. He was a farmer. Surviving are 1 stepson, H L Gunterman of Jerseyville and 1 niece. Services were conducted at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev R E George officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.


GIERS. Mrs Louisa Giers, 72, died August 5, 1907. Funeral from her home. Rev C R Hempel of German Evangelical church officiated and burial was in St. Louis.


GIERS. Ralph Giers, 26, died at Columbus, OH. The cousin of the late Carl Giers, who died at Camp Upton. His parents Mr & Mrs Fred Giers, received a letter from Ralph stating that he had a cold but was still doing guard duty and reporting every 2 hours at the hospital. He left Jerseyville with a group of limited service men for an eastern training camp and later was assigned to Columbus for guard duty. Surviving are his parents; 2 sisters, Mrs Edson Dodge, Jerseyville and Mrs Robert Bosworth of Ft Worth, TX. Private services were held in the parents home because of the influenza. Members of the Elks Lodge accompanied the body to the cemetery. Pall bearers: Carl Beaty, Carl Meyers, Larry Powers, Leslie Jacoby, Philip Taylor, Carl Thatcher, Roy Hicks and Charles Schroeder.


GILBERT. Dorcas (Carnet) Gilbert, 74, was born in Harlan, Harlan County, KY, near the Cumberlain Mountains, March 15, 1833 and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs John Mackelden at Fairfield, IA February 16, 1907. Her father died when she was quite small and her mother went to the home of her father. He was a large slave owner. Here she resided until her marriage to John Gilbert in 1848. To them were born 11 children, 2 daughters, died after their marriage and 4 other children departed this life when they were quite small. After living a few years in KY, they came to IL and settled in Hardin, where the deceased lived until the last few years. She was a patient and loving mother and a good kind neighbor. Several years ago she became afflicted with an eye problem which grew worse with the passing of years. About 1 year ago she met with an accident which left her crippled. During her suffering she never murmured but bore them with a calm fortitude and a trust in Jesus which endured to the end, and we feel that the master has said “come up higher”. Mrs Gilbert united with Hardin Presbyterian church March 2, 1873, and received the sacrament of baptism from her Pastor, Rev H P Carson. Her membership continued until removed by the messenger of death. 2 sons and 3 daughters, with other relatives and friends are left to mourn the loss of a dear friend. She was brought to Hardin where the funeral was held at the Presbyterian church with Rev Jas R Sager officiating. She was laid to rest in the silent city of the hill.


GILCHRIST. Mrs Emma Gilchrist, 70, a former resident of Otterville, died at the home of her brother, William Bray, in Alton on February 1. The body was brought by motor to Jerseyville and services were held from Union Forest church, Rev Joseph Jenkins officiated. Interment was in White cemetery.


GILHAM. Blanche Gilham, 16, died at the home of her parents, Mr & Mrs Fletcher Gilham near Newbern. Funeral at Newbern church with Rev Cunningham.


GILL. Mrs Emily Gill, 89, well known resident of Newbern and Jerseyville, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs Charles Updike, Alton. Several years ago Mrs Gill moved from Jerseyville to make her home with her daughter in Alton. Several grown children survive. Funeral from Didlake chapel, Alton, burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.


GILL. Henry Gill of Newbern, was killed at Jacksonville Fri. He was visiting friends there and was walking down town with a gentleman named Hildreth. A neighbor drove by and asked them if they wanted to ride. Both men accepted the invitation and as they came to Main St., the horse became frightened at a street car and started to run. Mr Gill attempted to jump, but was told not to by the driver; as the horse ran fast Gill did jump and the sudden stop threw him backward, his head striking the pavement, killing him. Mr Gill was one of the leading men in the south part of the county, and was active in politics.


GILL. Henry Z Gill, 76, died at his home in Long Beach, CA. Dr Gill had resided in Jerseyville from 1873-1881. During the civil war he was a surgeon in the army and rose to the rank of Lt Col. While a resident of St. Louis, he was one of the publishers of the “medical journal”. In 1881 he was placed in charge of the Southern Illinois Penitentiary. In November of 1883 he resigned to accept chari? (Chief?) of surgery in the Worchester Medical College at Cleveland, OH.


GILL. Herschel Gill, 25, son of Mr & Mrs Harry Gill of Elsah, died of the flu at Camp Custer, MI. He had gone with a contingent of men from Jersey county on September 15. Funeral from his home at Elsah. Burial was in Newbern. He leaves his mother and father, 2 brothers and 1 sister.


GILL. John Gill of Grafton, died in St. Louis of heat stroke.


GILL. Mason E Gill, 61, died at his home where he had been moved Sat from Alton Memorial hospital, Alton. Gill, a supervisor in the detonator department at Olin Mathiseon, Alton, was stricken with a heart attack while at work on January 11. He was a son of John Henry & Elsie (Swan) Gill, and was born at Newbern, October 23, 1906. Surviving are his Wife Elva “Betty” Gill of Dow; 2 sons, Robert Gill of Dover, DE, and Ronald Gill at home; and 1 Aunt, Miss Millie Gill of Dow. The body is at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville where arrangements were pending word from Robert Gill in Delaware.


GILL. Miss Millie Gill, 89 yrs, 9 mo, 5 days, a retired teacher of Jersey county, died June 15, 1970 at Waters nursing home. The former Dow resident had resided there for the past 2 yrs. Funeral rites were held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev W Louis Purcell, pastor of United Methodist church, officiated and burial was in Newbern cemetery. Miss Gill was a daughter of the late Robert & Elizabeth (Emmott) Gill and was born in Jersey county September 19, 1880. The retired teacher was a member of the National Retired Teachers Association. Her only survivors are 1 niece Mrs Mason Gill of Dow and 2 g-nephews.


GILL. William Gill, 65, died at home in Newbern September 6, 1897. He was born June 21, 1832 at Silsden, England, and came to this country early in his life. He died of cholera. Funeral from Cumberland Presbyterian church in Newbern September 8. Revs Webber and R M Smith officiated and burial was in Newbern cemetery. He came to the US in 1858 landing at New Orleans, and thence to Jerseyville. He worked for John White of Kane at his trade of making wheels at 20 cents each. He leaves 5 brothers, Henry and Robert of Newbern, Smith of Litchfield, Joseph and Thomas who remain in England. His wife, Caroline (Mcdow) Gill has been dead about 10 yrs. 1 son, Harry, Elsah; and 2 daughters, Lou living at home with her father and Etta of Jacksonville, survive them.


GILLELAND. Wm F Gilleland, 25, died at his home near Fieldon. Funeral held at the grave in Borlin cemetery.


GILLELAND. Wm Thomas Gilleland, 25, was born in Greene county, IL July 7, 1893. On October 4, 1916, he married Allie Clark of Nutwood, IL. They were parents of 1 Child, Dorothy Enid Gilleland. He was post master of Fieldon for a short time and later rural mail carrier. He leaves his wife; daughter; father, Niel Gilleland – mother Martha Gilleland; 1 brother, Charles; 2 sisters, Mrs Dollie Wellhansen and Mrs Della Edwards; and his Grandmother, Mrs Mary Miller.


GILLER. Mrs Lizzie Giller, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs John Grabbe in Alton. Funeral from German Evangelical church in Brighton. Rev Schnatthorst officiated. She was a sister of L C Jacoby of Jerseyville.


GILLESPIE. Elizabeth L “Lib” Gillespie, 74, died unexpectedly at her residence on December 4, 1990. Born in Hardin, she was the daughter of the late George & Nellie (Johnson) Funk. On May 15, 1940, in Alton, she married Charles G Gillespie, and he survives. Also surviving are 2 daughters, Karen a Fessler of Dow and Gayle L Rawson of Godfrey; 1 Son, C Patrick Gillespie of Canton, OH; 8 grandchildren; and 1 brother, John C Funk, Hardin. Visitation was at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral mass was at St Patrick Catholic church in Grafton with Rev Patrick Carroll as celebrant. Burial was in St Patrick cemetery in Godfrey (Grafton??) . Memorials may be given to St Patrick church, Grafton.


GILLHAM. Charles C Gillham, 48, died at the home of his mother Ida (Chappell) Gillham. His father was the late Richard C Gillham. He was born in Jersey county on March 29, 1879. On November 27, 1905 he married Martha V (Dempsey). Surviving are his wife; 2 Daughters, Ruth V and Theda Irene, and his mother. Funeral at East Newbern ME church. Rev F M Hedger and burial was in East Newbern cemetery.


GILLHAM. Edna L Gillham, 93, a former Dow resident, died at Blu Fountain Manor nursing home, Godfrey after an extended illness. She had recently resided with her daughter, Edith Brinkmann, Godfrey. She was born in Delhi, a daughter of the Late Samuel & Sophia (Howell) Watson. She married Luther Gillham on October 26, 1909. He died March 23, 1967. 4 brothers and 3 sisters preceded her in death. Service and visitation was from Gent funeral home. Rev Paul S Krebs officiated and burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey.


GILLHAM. Luther Marcus Gillham, 82, retired farmer of Dow, died March 23, 1967 at Jersey County Memorial hospital. He had been moved there 1 1/2 hours earlier. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Services were held there by Rev Paul S Krebs of Alton officiating. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park. Mr Gillham, a life long resident of Jersey county, was a son of the late Richard & Ida (Chappell) Gillham, and was born in Jersey county February 27, 1885. Surviving are his wife, Mrs Edna (Watsonn) Gillham of Dow, 1 daughter, Mrs William Brinkman of Clifton Terrace, 1 aunt, Mrs Octa Darr of Alton, and nieces and nephews.

GILLHAM. Mrs Mary F Gillham, 62, of Upper Alton, died at the home of her brother, John Chappee at Newbern on January 7, 1909. Funeral from C P Presbyterian church at Newbern with Rev James R Slaten officiating.


GILLHAM. Paul Kent Gilliland, 16, son of Kenneth & Sally (Kain) Gilliland of R1 Grafton, died August 13, at his home from a gunshot wound. He was born June 7, 1962. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery, Grafton. Besides his parents, he is survived by 3 half Brothers, Terrance of Rensselear, IN, Kenneth of Grafton and James Keith Reno of Carrollton; and 1 half sister, Melody Lee Reno of Grafton.


GILLINGHAM. Bainbridge Gillingham, died rather suddenly last week. The older resident of Greene county was very highly esteemed and revered personage. His wife, Juliet a “Tilden” widow of Alford Tilden is a daughter of John Russell who was editor of the Backwoodsman, published in Grafton; the first newspaper published in this county.


GILMAN. William David “Bill” Gilman, 73, died December 15, 1990 at Jersey County Memorial hospital. Born in Elvins, MO he was the son of the Late George S & Mary Louise (Usher) Gilman. He was a past Master at Fieldon Masonic Temple 592, a member of Shrine and Scottish Rights, past Pres of Community Unit District 100 School Board, Honorary Chapter Farmer of Jersey County FFA, Member of Ag Stagilization Conservation and a self employed farmer. He married Naomi (Gropple) Gilman September 11, 1940, in Fieldon and she survives. Also surviving are 1 daughter, Linda King of Jerseyville; 4 sons, Carl and Robert of Fieldon, Roger of Hardin and Fred of Kampsville; 9 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren and 2 step g-grandchildren; 2 Sisters, Leoria Short, Columbus, MO and Priscilla Devine of Florissanst, MO; 2 brothers, Therain Gilman of Jerseyville and Gerald Gilman of Edwardsville; and 1 step sister, Bernice Poleet of Elvis. Preceding him in death were 2 brothers, Clyde and Willard Gilman; and 1 sister, Virginia Catherine Stevens. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Masonic services were held. Funeral services were at funeral home with Revs Rick Francis and John Gaydos officiating. Burial was in Fieldon cemetery. Memorials may be given to Shriner Hospital for Crippled Children in St. Louis.


GILMAN. Clyde Phillip Gilman, 63, of Flat River, MO, died January 10 at the hospital in Bonne Terre, MO. He was born July 22, 1913 at Elvins, MO. He was a retired lead miner. Surviving are his wife Dorothy; 2 sons, Glen, Arnold, MO, and James of Kansas City, MO; 3 daughters, Clydia McMullen, Richwood, MO, Ladonna Wahley, Arnold, MO and Robin at home; his mother Mrs Andrew Hedge of Jerseyville and 2 brothers, Therain Gilman of Jerseyville and Bill Gilman of Rosedale. Services were held at the Methodist church in Flat River with burial in Sunlight Cemetery, Belgrade, MO.


GILMORE. Joseph Gilmore, 72, died at home in Grafton on March 7. He leaves his wife, 2 daughters, Mrs Henry Brockmeyer of St. Louis and Mrs William Vanausdoll of Dow; 2 brothers, James Gillmore of Grafton and Charles Gillmore of Kansas; 2 sisters, Mrs William Wallace of Alton and Mrs Martha Vanausdoll of Jerseyville. GILWORTH. Alma Gilworth, 99, of Medora died May 9 at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville. She was born in Kemper, a daughter of the late William & Rebecca (Price) Armstrong. Her husband was the late Elmer Gilworth. She is survived by 1 grandchild and 2 g-grandchildren. T sons preceded her in death. Services were held May 12, at Warner-Targhetta funeral home, Medora by Rev Earl Clagg, pastor of Bethel Baptist church, Medora. Burial was in Medora cemetery. Memorials may be given to Bethel Baptist church.


GILWORTH. Flora Gilworth, 84, former Jersey county resident, died December 7, at Mather nursing home, Alton, where she had resided for 2 years. She was a daughter of the Late Mr & Mrs James Harris and was born in Dow. She was married in Jerseyville in 1924 to John Gilworth whose death occurred in 1951. Surviving are 1 daughter, Mrs Velma Hutcherson of Wentzville, MO; 3 sons, Raymond of Brighton, Wilbert of Alton and Lewis of East Alton; 4 grandchildren and 4 g-grandchildren. Final rites were held at Marks Mortuary in Wood River with Rev Theodore Barklate of Feruson, MO officiated and burial was in Upper Alton cemetery.


GILWORTH. James Stewart Gilworth, 66, of Jerseyville died October 24 at Jersey County Memorial hospital. Services were held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev V Clay Noah officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Gilworth was a retail hardware salesman at Norton Hardware, formerly Miller Hardware, for the last 40 years. Born August 27, 1914, he was the son of Howard & Nita (Seago) Gilworth and married Elma (Hawk) Gilworth March 31, 1937. His survivors are his wife; 1 son, Ronald S of Socorro, NM; 1 daughter, Phyllis J Harvey of Jerseyville; 1 brother, Wayne of Jerseyville and 2 sisters, Mary Fundel of Jerseyville and Virginia Sutter, Alton. Memorials may be given to Heart Fund.


GILWORTH. John W Gilworth, 72 yrs, 9 mo, 20 days, died at Wood River Community hospital on February 21. The deceased was born in Jersey county May 1, 1878. Surviving are his wife; 3 sons, Raymond and Lewis of Wood River and Wilbert of East Alton; 1 daughter, Mrs Vilma Scott of St. Louis; 4 grandchildren; 1 g-great grandchild; 3 brothers, Howard Gilworth of Jerseyville, Wesley Gilworth of Plainview, and Oliver Gilworth of St. Louis; and 2 sisters, Mrs Cora Rhoades of Medora and Mrs Etta Walters of Alton. Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements.


GILWORTH. Lewis Gilworth, 68, died December 17. Born in May 1826, in Greene county about 2 miles northwest of Kane. Moved from there to Ruyle township, in 1836. He married Margaret (Dixon) Gilworth in 1867. He bought a farm southwest of Jerseyville in February 1871. He lived there for 13 years and then moved to the city. He was a member of Bethel Baptist church. Wherever you found brother Gilworth you always found him standing up for what was right. He leaves his wife; 5 brothers and 1 sister. Rev J J Porter officiated at the services held in the home. Pall bearers: John Fink, G F Scribner, John Wood, James Livingston, T F Bradshaw, V J Ruff.


GILWORTH. Neta a Gilworth, 81 yrs, 5 mo, 18 days, was dead on arrival at Jersey County Memorial hospital Sat after being stricken at the home of neighbors. Mrs Gilworth and her daughter, Mrs Wayne (Mary) Fundel, had gone to the home of Mr & Mrs Carl Keehner on E Pearl St. to visit. She collapsed shortly after her arrival there. Though she had been in ill health for some time, her death came as a shock to relatives and friends. Mrs Gilworth was a daughter of the late James H & Virginia (Mourning) Seago. She was born in Jersey county and had made her home in Jerseyville since the middle 50’s when her late husband Howard retired from farming. Surviving are 2 daughters, Mary Fundel and Mrs James (Virginia) Sutter of Alton; 2 sons, Wayne and Stewart Gilworth of Jerseyville; 6 grandchildren; 4 g-grandchildren, and 1 sister, Mrs Irene Seago of Jerseyville. Funeral services were held at First Baptist church, Jerseyville on February 13. Rev Carlton Christenson officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. GILWORTH. Perry Gilworth, formerly of Hawkins Prairie, died at his home in Kansas on August 5. The remains were brought to his old home in Fidelity where the funeral took place at bethel church. Rev Henry Dixon officiated and burial was in Puritt cemetery.


GILWORTH. Raymond J Gilworth, 84, died November 28, 1990 at Greenwood Manor, Jerseyville. He was a dubb supervisor for Shell Oil Wood River Refinery for 42 yrs, retiring in 1968. Born in Fidelity, he was the son of the late John W & Flora (Harris) Gilworth. On November 18, 1933, in Alton, he married Sina “Sue” Worthy and she survives. Also surviving are 3 sons, Donald Gilworth of Godfrey, Ronald Gilworth of Placentia, CA and James Gilworth of Michigan City, IN; 6 grandchildren; 1 sister, Velma Clevenger of Godfrey; and 1 brother, Lewis Gilworth of Denver, CO. 1 brother, Wilbur Gilworth; and 2 g-grandchildren preceded him in death. Visitation was from Targhetta funeral home in Brighton, where rites of the Wood River Masonic Lodge 1062 was held funeral from St. John United Church of Christ in Brighton. Revs Orrin Anderson and Henry Lippert officiated. Burial was in Brighton cemetery.


GILWORTH. Reed-Redd Gilworth, 83, a pioneer resident of Ruyle township, passed away at the home of his nephew Elmer Gilworth, 9 miles east of Jerseyville. Burial from Bethel Baptist church with Rev W M Gaither officiating. Thomas H Cummings, F F Loellke and Wm Roach of our city attended the funeral.


GISENHEIMER. Gust Gisenheimer, retired farm worker, died at his home in Quarry township February 6. The decedent was a son of the late Mr & Mrs Wilhelm Gisenheimer and was born at Armabaugh, Germany. He had been a resident of the us for 68 yrs. His only survivors are 3 nephews, William a Miller of Brownsville, TX, Georte Miller of Cottage Hills and Robert Miller of Grafton. Funeral services were held at Grafton Methodist church on February 8. Rev Edward E Souders, officiated and interment was in American Legion cemetery, Grafton. (Year of death in ?1951 ?.


GISSLER. Leo James Gissler, 80, of Jerseyville died April 25 at Jersey County Memorial hospital. He was born November 8, 1898 in Alton a son of Mr & Mrs John Gissler and was a core maker at Duncan Foundry until retirement. His wife, Minnie (Bueler) Gissler, died in 1977. Surviving are 1 son, Clarence Gissler, Horseshoe Bend, AR; 1 daughter, Mary Sheets of Alsey and 1 sister, Elizabeth Vonahmen of Brighton. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert, who was killed in WWII and 1 sister. Graveside services were conducted at Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey. Memorials may be given to the Heart Fund.


GISY. Alice C Gisy, 81, of Dow died November 18 at Jersey County Memorial hospital. She was born March 7 1907, in Grafton, the daughter of the Late Joseph Stamper & Clara (Calloway) Stamper. She married Albert Gisy on July 23, 1930, in Colorado Springs, CO and he died July 12, 1954. She was a postmistress for the Dow post office for 28 years. She was also a teacher for 12 years in Jersey Madison counties. Survivors include 1 daughter, Sharon Allen of Dow; 1 son, Gordon Gisy of Marion; 2 sisters, Vallette Zimmerman and Marjorie Hooper, Both of Jerseyville; 1 brother Joseph N Stamper of Alton; 6 grandchildren 4 g-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and 1 son, Avery Gisy. Funeral services were November 22 at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Steve Perrin officiated, with burial in Upper Alton cemetery.


GISY. Avery Wilson Gisy, 55, of Jerseyville, co owner of Tri-Co Oil Inc, died December 12 at Barnes hospital in St. Louis where he had been a patient for 11 days. He was born March 9, 1919 in Dow a son of Albert & Grace (Diamond) Gisy and was married to Dorothy (Wilson) Gisy in 1940. The Gisys resided in Grafton until 1970 when they moved to Jerseyville. Mr Gisy was a former member of Comm United Dist 100 school board for 9 years and was past president. He was a member of Grafton Full Moon Lodge, Eastern Star at Grafton, past Master and past Patron of Eastern Star, United Methodist Church, Jerseyville, and Westlake Country Club. He had served with the Merchant Marines in WWII. In addition to his widow, he is survived by 1 son, Gail Gisy of Tucson, Az; 1 daughter, Averyl, who is a freshman at Eastern IL University at Charleston; his step mother, Mrs Alice Gisy of Dow; 1 brother, Gordon Gisy of Marion; 1 sister, Mrs Delbert (Sharon) Allen of Dow. His parents preceded him in death. The funeral was conducted at – incomplete


GISY. Flora Ann Gisy, 83, a former Jerseyville resident, was brought here for interment in Oak Grove cemetery. Her death occurred in Pleasant Rest Nursing Home, Belleville, where she had lived for 5 days. She had resided most of her life in Jerseyville, Alton, and in Belleville for the past 3 years. Funeral rites were held at Gent Chapel, Alton. Mrs Gisy was the daughter of the late Mr & Mrs Paul Glohr and was born in Jerseyville on January 31, 1883. She was the widow of John Gisy. Surviving are 1 son, Glenn of Belleville, 1 brother, Walter Glohr of Kane, 2 sisters, Mrs Grace Kremer of Godfrey and Mrs Irene Schulz of Fort Dodge, IA. She was preceded in death by an infant son, 1 daughter and 5 sisters.


GISY. Glenn G Gisy, 78, of Bellville, formerly of Jerseyville, died August 29, 1988, at Memorial hospital in Bellville. Gisy was a retired electrician for Illinois Power company. Born in Jerseyville he was the son of the late John & Flora (Glohr) Gisy. His wife, Monette J (Tate) Gisy survives. He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Gisy; and 1 sister, Ione Lawrence McPherson. Visitation was from Kurrus Funeral Home Belleville. Rev Andrew Kramer officiated. Burial was in lake view Memorial Gardens in Bellville.


Glassbrenner. Abbie Lenore Glassbrenner, 82, formerly of Jerseyville, died May 1, at St Anthony hospital, Alton, after a short illness. She was the widow of George Leonard Glassbrenner who died February 3, 1972. Services were held at Jacoby-Wise funeral home, Shipman. Burial was in Shipman cemetery.


GLASSBRENNER. Fred E Glassbrenner, 57, died November 1, 1986, at St. John hospital, Springfield. Glassbrenner served in the Korean conflict and was a farmer and carpenter. He was the business agent for the Madison County District Council of Carpenters for many years and was president of Carpenters Local 377 for 15 yrs. He was born in Jerseyville, the son of the late George L & Abbie (Van Pelt) Glassbrenner. On January 10, 1953, in Fieldon, he married Norma Jean (Narup) Glassbrenner, who survives. Also surviving are 3 daughters, Karen Bender of Williamsville, IL, Patti Updike of Jerseyville and Ann Glassbrenner of Plainview; 2 sons; Ralph Glassbrenner, Brighton and Paul Glassbrenner of Plainview; and 5 grandchildren. Visitation was at Jacoby Wise Funeral Home in Shipman. Plainview Lodge #461 AF&AM conducted Masonic Rites. Rev John F Sheahan officiated at the services held at funeral home. Burial was in St Denis Cemetery, Shipman. Memorials may be given to American Heart Association.


GLASSBRENER. George Leonard Glassbrener, 80, of Plainview and formerly of Jerseyville died February 3 at a Jacksonville hospital. Services were held at Jacoby-Wise funeral home in Shipman. Rev Carlos Bryant of Brighton officiated and interment was in Shipman cemetery. He was born January 31, 1892 in Alton. The Glassbrenner family resided in Jerseyville for many years where Mr Glassbrenner was associated with Wayne V Williams in the Williams & Glassbrenner Barbershop and later was an insurance salesman. He served with the Coast Guard in WWI. Surviving are his wife, Lenora (Van Pelt) Glassbrenner; 1 son Fred of Plainview and 5 grandchildren. Masonic rites were held.


GLEASON. Charles Henry Gleason, 90, died November 26, at Garnet’s nursing home. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Fr William Maul officiated and burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery. Mr Gleason was born in Jersey county, July 7, 1873 a son of the late Philip & Bridget (Ryan) Gleason. Surviving are 2 Sisters, Miss Katherine and Elizabeth Gleason both of Jerseyville.


GLEASON. David D Gleason, 70, died at home in Rosedale, November 12, 1890. He was born in Gallia county, OH November 8, 1820 and lived there 20 years. He had a good education and taught school for a number of years. He left Ohio and went to Kanawha Salt Works in WV, teaching there for 2 years. Back to Ohio for 1 year 1847 then to Miss for 1 year. Back to WV again and saw the horrors of the cholera epidemic of 1849. November 9, 1850, he Married Emma Downward of Philadelphia. In 1857 they came west to Otterville, to Clay county, IL and to St. Louis where he was Principal of Lowell School for 10 years. They moved back to Jersey county near Rosedale, where he lived until his death. November 12, 1890. He was the father of 5 daughters, 4 living; 2 in St. Louis, 1 in CA and Miss Birdie at home. He was a good business man and liked by all who knew him. Funeral from Rosedale school house on November 13. Rev Wm Rainey.


GLEASON. Miss Katherine Agnes Gleason, 92, died at Garnet nursing home, Jerseyville. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev M. Edwards Breed, pastor of First Presbyterian church officiated and burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery, Grafton. Miss Gleason, a daughter of the late Philip & Bridget (Ryan) Gleason, was born in Jerseyville, April 20, 1871. She is survived by 1 sister, miss Elizabeth (Bessie) Gleason.


GLEASON. William Cleveland Gleason, 87, died at the home of his brother, C W Gleason, March 4, 1912 on E Cemetery and 3rd St. Jerseyville. Funeral from the home with Rev Catt officiating. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery. When 17 he went to Lawrence, OH, and taught school. When 25, he went to Virginia and taught. Later to Galena, IL. He then returned to OH. In 1860, he married Cassandra (Thornton) Gleason. They moved to Clay county, IL and from there to Rosedale, Jersey county. He was then in the general merchandising business. Mrs Gleason died at the age of 38. Mr Gleason was a member of the Masonic Order.


GLEDHILL. Cornelia Gledhill, one of the better known elder residents of Jerseyville, died at Jersey County Memorial hospital November 23, following an extended period of failing health. Mrs Gledhill, widow of Dr Harry Gledhill, longtime practicing physician of Jersey county had taken an active part in the life of the community until her activities were limited by ill health. She devoted many hours of the time in the work of First Baptist church where she taught Sunday school for many years. Soon after Jersey County Memorial hospital opened, Mrs Gledhill directed plans for the organization of the Baby Alumni Association of the hospital and had since served as its president. Despite the fact that she had ben confined to a wheelchair for the past few years she maintained an active interest in this work and other projects which she was able to carry on in her limited capacity. Visitation was at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral services were held at First Baptist church where Rev Harold Lane officiated. Cremation was at Valhalla crematory and the ashes were placed in Oak Grove cemetery. She was a lifelong resident of Jersey county and was daughter of the late Mr & Mrs Robert Newton, early residents of the community. Surviving are 1 son, Robert Gledhill; 1 daughter, Mary Florence Gledhill, who made her home with her mother; and 1 brother, Robert Keith Newton of Urbana.


GLEDHILL. Dorothy R Gledhill, 78, died July 4, 1991 at Extended Care Unit of Mennonite Hospital, Bloomington. She belonged to several organizations: Westlake Country Club, Jersey County Historical Society, P.E.O. Sisterhood – Jersey County Chapter, First United Presbyterian Church, Jerseyville and Jersey County Cooperative Extension. She was a retired teacher and home adviser in Jersey and Rock Island counties. Born in Carlock on January 29, 1913, she was the daughter of the late George & Emma (Zimmerman) Romersberger. On April 12, 1947, in Danvers she married Robert H Gledhill, and he died on January 20, 1984. Surviving are 4 brothers, Orville Romersberger, Meeker, Co, Guy Romersberger, Peoria, Richard Romersberger of Carlock and Bill Romersberger of Gridley; and 1 sister, Marjorie Schlipf of Gridley. Preceding her in death were 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Visitation was at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Services were held there, with Rev Simon a Simon officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Memorials may be given to charity of choice.


GLEDHILL. Mary Cornelia Gledhill, widow of the late Robert C Gledhill, died at her home in Jerseyville after 3 days illness. On July 6, she suffered a stroke of paralysis and on July 9, died. She was in her 86th year at the time of her death and was born Smyrna, Chenango Co, NY, the daughter of Stephen M & Mary (Hunt) Ducher, pioneer residents of Dutchess Co, NY. The family moved to Barry, Pike Co, IL in 1843. Her father whose family name was formerly Du Duyster, was descendant of a prominent Holland family. Her mother’s family, the Hunts were natives of Lebanon, CT. They came from the same ancestry as Leigh Hunt, the famous english writer. She was the last surviving member of a large family of children. She was married to John C Strong in Dec, 1863, at Barry, IL, coming to Jerseyville to reside in 1864. To his union, 1 son, Charles H Strong, was born. After the death of Mr Strong, which occurred in 1867, she was married in 1868 to Robert C Gledhill of Jerseyville. To this union were born 2 Sons, Henry R and Herbert Gledhill. Herbert died in 1877 in his 4th year. The deceased had been for many years closely identified with the religious and social life of Jerseyville. She was a zealousMember of the Baptist church and one of the oldest members in the Sunday school. She was affiliated with the WCTU society, Jersey County Domestic Science Association and Women’s Relief Corps, being first color bearer of the last names society for yeary. Up to the time of her fatal illness she was very active both mentally and physically and only the day before she was stricken had attended a meeting of the Domestic Science Assn at the home of Dr & Mrs J G Schwarz. Mrs Gledhill leaves her 2 Sons, Hon Charles H Strong of NY City, NY and Dr Henry R Gledhill of this city, also 2 grandchildren, Robert and Mary Florence Gledhill of Jerseyville. The funeral was held from First Baptist church of Jerseyville, Rev a B Carson officiating. The beautiful song, Thou Art Not Dead, was given as a solo by Mrs Am Wiles, and Mrs Wiles and Mrs Robert Wylder sang a duet, One Fleeting Hour. They were accompanied at the organ by a H Zimmerman of Alton. It was Mrs Gledehill’s wish that be requested not to send flowers and the only floral offering was a blanket of flowers given by her 2 sons. Burial was in the mausoleum at Oak Grove cemetery.


GLEDHILL. Mary Florence Gledhill, a retired school teacher, died August 22 at Jersey County Memorial hospital. She was the daughter of the late Henry Robert & Cornelia W (Newton) Gledhill. Surviving is her Brother, Robert H Gleddhill of Jerseyville. She was a member of the Business and Women’s Club. Funeral service was held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev Everett Chambers of First Baptist church officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.


GLEDHILL. Capt Robert Christy Gledhill, 77, died in Jerseyville. The first newsboy on the first railroad built in IL, the Jacksonville & Southeastern, a line of 30 miles long between Jacksonville and Naples, IL. Born April 1, 1839 at Good Intent, NY, a suburb of Philadelphia, located across the Delaware river from that city. At 1 year he was brought to Jacksonville, IL. His father, a woolen merchant from England died when Robert was 9. Soon after Robert started working as a news boy on the RR. Later he worked in a confectionary and also photography. Was associated with Will Tandy Galleries in Carrollton, Greenfield and Alton. Enlisted in Co. A, 10th IL as a volunteer and served 3 years. He was injured once, which was during a charge when a spent ball hit him and knocked senseless, he was left on the battlefield as dead. He participated in the March to the Sea with Sherman. From fighting stock, his father, and 5 uncles were members of the Black Horse Calvary of the Battle of Waterloo. Upon the death of John C Strong, who operated gallery (photographic ?), Mr Gledhill came to Jerseyville to take charge of the gallery and on February 18, 1868, married the proprietor, Mrs Strong. He helped build IOOF hall. He leaves his widow, 1 son, Dr H R Gledhill, 1 stepson, Hon C H Strong, NY, 1 sister, Mrs Harriet Barry of Oakland, CA. Services from Presbyterian Church with Rev Jos. Jenkins. Pallbearers were Elias Cockrell, John Cory, Jett Kirby, H S Daniels, W E Holland, Ellis Whitehead, A F Pitt, and J M Page.


GLEDHILL. Robert Henry Gledhill, 75, prominent retired business man, died January 20, at Jersey County Memorial hospital where he had been a patient since Christmas Day. He was a native of Jerseyville and the only son of Henry R & Cornelia (Newton) Gledhill and was born September 29, 1908. His father was a practicing physician in Jersey county for many years. Robert “Bob” Gledhill was graduated from Jersey Township high school in 1925 and from Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, four years later. He was a member of the Harvard Alumni Association. While studying at Sorbonne University, in Paris, Robert served as a guide at the Louvre Art Museum. Upon his return to the states, he accepted a position as Security Advisor for Bankers Securities Co., St. Louis, Mo. During WWII he held the rank of Staff Sgt in the US Army and served most of the time in the South Pacific. He rejoined the Securities Co., after his military service and continued with the firm until 1970. His marriage to Dorothy (Romersberger) Gledhill of Carlock, a former Jersey County Home Extension Advisor, was in Danvers on April 12, 1947. They made their home here and for the last 10 years resided in the residence of his late parents. Ill health brought about his retirement from business and civic endeavors in 1970. Prominent among his contributions to Jerseyville was his work with Jersey County Memorial hospital. He was active in the promotion and building of the hospital in the early 50’s. He became the first treasurer of the hospital board and served in that capacity until 1970. He was a member of the Jerseyville Water Board from 1956-64, serving through the years that the large filtration plant was built. His keen knowledge of the bonding business was a great asset in these 2 ventures. He was also a member of the original Jerseyville Planning Comm. In addition to serving his community, Gledhill was owner-operator of Gledhill Construction Co. from 1946-68. He was a lifelong member of the First Baptist church, past Pres of Westlake Country Club, and a member of the Lions Club. His wife, Dorothy survives him. Preceding him in death were his parents and 1 sister, Mary Florence “Peg” Gledhill. Services were held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev Simon A Simon of First Presbyterian Church and Rev V Clay Noah Jr, of First Baptist church officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Memorials may be given to either church and the Heart Fund.


GLEESPEN. Ida B Gleespen, 76, wife of Peter F Gleespen, of Jerseyville, died January 21, at St. Joseph hospital, Alton. Funeral services were held January 24 at Holy Ghost church, Jerseyville. Rev Paul P Heinen officiated and burial was in St. Francis cemetery. She was a daughter of the late James & Matilda (?) (Clark) Prine and was born in Jersey county on May 23, 1878. Mrs Gleespen was active in club and lodge work. She was a member of the Jerseyville Women’s Club, Woman’s Auxiliary of Jersey County Memorial Hospital, Woman’s Relief Corps and Royal Neighbors of America. She served as District Deputy of the Royal Neighbors for about 5 years. Surviving are her husband, 1 daughter, Mrs Harry Springman, Jerseyville; 1 sister, Mrs Alta Mcdaniels, Jerseyville, and 2 brothers, Earl Prine, Jerseyville and Arthur Prine of Godfrey. Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville was in charge of arrangements.


GLEESPEN. Peter F Gleespen, 90, retired post office custodian, died of asphyxiation in a fire at the home of his daughter, Mrs Harry F Springman, Jerseyville. He was transported to Jersey County Memorial hospital and was dead on arrival. Mrs Springman had attended a dinner meeting of the Jerseyville Woman’s Club and during her absence Mrs Alta Mcdaniels stayed with her brother-in-law, Mr Gleespen. When Mrs Springman left to take Mrs Mcdaniels to her home, her father was sitting in his chair. Returning about 10 minutes later she found the house filled with smoke. Her father was lying on the floor and she called her neighbor, Leslie K Jacoby, who assisted her in moving Mr Gleespen to the porch and the fire dept was summoned. Coroner Rodney Jacoby said that Mr Gleespen was severely burned but that death probably was from asphyxiation. Most of the damage to the home was from smoke. Mr Gleespen was a son of the late James & Hannah (Noonan) Gleespen and was born in Jersey county June 11, 1876. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs Ida Belle (Prine) Gleespen, and 1 daughter, Mrs Clarence Darby. Visitation hours were at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville where the rosary was recited. Funeral service was at St. Francis church where requiem mass was celebrated by Rev Fr Francis Lee and burial was in St. Francis cemetery.


GLENN. Mrs Lillie Glenn, 43, died at the home of her sister, Mrs Chester Chappell on October 31. She was a member of the Baptist church. She leaves her mother, several brothers and sisters and 1 son, Harry B Glen. Funeral held in church with Rev Smith of Newbern serving. Burial was in family cemetery.


GLOHR. Miss Evaline C Glohr, 20, died at the home of her parents on April 2, 1898. Funeral from Kgerman Evangelical Church. Rev Alfred Ball Horn serving.


GLOHR. Matilda Glohr, 69, wife of the late Paul Glohr, formerly of Jerseyville, died at home in Fosterburg, IL. Remains arrived by train and thence to Evangelical church in Jerseyville. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery.


GLOHR. Walter P Glohr, 85, of Kane, died May 8, at Greenwood Manor nursing home. He had resided there since April 28. The retired farmer was born in Jersey county January 22, 1894, a son of the late Paul & Matilda (Fryer) Glohr. He was a member of the Jersey County Farm Bureau and Kane Baptist church. Surviving are his wife, Clarice (Campion) Glohr whom he married March 23, 1932; 1 sister, Grace Kremer, Godfrey, 1 nephew and 5 nieces. His parents and 7 sisters preceded him in death. Visitation was from Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Services were at funeral home with Rev Garold Cooper. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Memorials may be given to American Cancer Society.


GLOSSUP. Resolution: whereas, S P Ohr Camp, #109, S V U S A has received with profound sorrow the news of the death of our good and worthy brother, Benjamin Glossup; that this camp realizes the fact that they have lost a brother who was ever ready for duty, and one who assumed an extra amount of duty that this camp may have an existence; that the community have lost a good and upright citizen; that we extend our sympathy to his bereaved relatives, and in token of respect, that our charter be draped in mourning for 30 days. Resolved that this camp extend thanks to the GAR for their welcome assistance in the last rites of our worthy brother. Resolved, that these resolutions be entered upon the minutes of the camp and published in the county papers and a copy be presented to the parents of our deceased brother. – Perry a Wallace, C E Bates and J C Miller – Committee.


GLYNN. Dr John L Glynn, 67, of Jerseyville, formerly of Alton died May 9, at Greenwood Manor where he had resided since last Aug. Dr Glynn was a Professor of Economics and Business Administration at SIU-Carbondale, retiring in 1978 he was born in St. Louis January 10, 1912. Surviving are 2 sons, Tom Glynn of Jerseyville and John Glynn of Hamburg; 2 daughters, Mary Ann Boies of Sycamore, IL and Kathleen Kusmanoff of Champaign; 8 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Esther Harrison and Ruth Vandycle of St. Louis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine (Schnelten) who d January 15, 1965,1 sister and 2 brothers. Visitation was from Staten funeral home in Alton where the rosary was recited. Funeral mass was celebrated at St. Mary church, Alton with Msgr James Suddes celebrant. Burial was in St. John cemetery, Carrollton. Memorials may be given to St. Mary church and American Cancer Society.
