LEACH. Jersey County Democrat, 28 Apr. 1887: Drury C. Leach, 73 years old, died. Funeral was from home, Rev. I. C. Tyson. He was born near Belleville and lived there on farm, coming to Jerseyville in April 1867. He was in the furniture business for some time, then returned to farming. He leaves widow and four children: Mrs. Kehoe of St. Louis, Mrs. Bailey of Kansas city; Otis D., County Superintendent of Schools, and Debbie.
LEACH. Jersey County Democrat, 25 Apr. 1891: Elizabeth F. Birt, born at Williamsport, Ohio 15 Oct. 1824, was married to D. C. Leach 1 Mar. 1852 at Belleville, IL where they lived until 7 Apr. 1867 when they came to Jerseyville. She was mother of six children; three of whom survive her: O. D. and Debbie Leach of this city, and Mrs. J. H. Bailey of Kansas City, MO. She was faithful bible student, that book being used in the school room in her day. When a child of 11, during a period of illness, she read it through twice. Almost her last words were, “lord, take me home, I am weary. Let me rest.” Her motto text was, “as a man thinketh so is he.”
LEACH. Jerseyville Republican, 3 Dec. 1908: Elizabeth Trabue Leach, youngest daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Trabue was born 30 July 1862 in Jersey county at the Trabue homestead, 5 miles southeast of Jerseyville and died 15 Nov. 1908 at Golden, Colorado, aged 46 years. She married 3 Apr. 1887 Otis D. Leach. Leaves husband and two children: Elizabeth and Edward; two sisters, Mrs. Edward Andrews of Brighton and Mrs. A. O. Barnett; and Brother, Murray Trabue. She made her home in this county all her life. All who knew her will hold her in precious memory. Funeral from Presbyterian church, Rev. W. H. Jordan. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery.
LEACH. Unknown newspaper: Jerseyville – Scesna Leach, 82, died at 2:30 pm Sunday 18 May 1986 at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville after a lengthy illness. She was a schoolteacher in Medora and Carrollton, and in Jersey County Unit 100 School District, where she retired from in 1968. Born in Morgantown, KY, she was the daughter of the Late Davis L. and Nina H. (Thomas) Harreld. Her husband, Calvin Walker James, died in 1957. Then, on 30 Aug. 1968 in Jerseyville, she was married to Gus R. Leach, who died 18 Aug. 1982. Surviving are a stepson, Charles “Chuck” Leach of Midland, Mich; and two grandchildren. Visitation will be from 9:30 am Wed. until time of services at 11:30 am at Gubser funeral home in Jerseyville with the Rev. Simon A. Simon officiating. Burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may be given to Alzheimers Disease research.
LEACH. Unknown newspaper: Jerseyville – Blanche Leach, 95, died at 2:22 pm Tuesday 21 July 1992 at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville. Born 10 Oct. 1896, in Boone County, MO, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Fannie (Rogers) Hall. She was a member of Jerseyville Order of Eastern Star Lodge 656. On 17 Jun. 1926 in Columbia, MO, she married Orlando Glenn Leach. He died 21 May 1973. Surviving are a Daughter, Charlotte Glenn of Bridgeton, Mo.; a Son, Dr. Glenn H. Leach of Springfield; eight grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and a sister, Nadine Thompson of Cocoa Beach, Fla. Three brothers, Rogers, David and Elgin Hall, preceded her in death. Visitation is from 5 to 8 pm Friday at Gubser funeral home in Jerseyville. Visitation continues from 10 am Sat. until time of services at 11 am at the First Baptist church in Jerseyville. The Rev. Grant Jensen will officiate. Burial is in Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbia, MO. Memorials may be made to the church, where she was a member.
LEACH. Unknown newspaper; 23 Feb. 1982: a funeral mass for Eva P. Leach, 77, of 503 W. Arch, Jerseyville, a retired teacher, will be celebrated at 10 am Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier church with Father Patrick Morrow and Father R. T. Shea as concelebrants. Her death occurred at 1:35 am 21 Feb. at Jersey Comm. Hospital after a few months illness. She was born in Greene county 10 May 1904, a daughter of the late Edward and Anna Vandersand Martin. Mrs. Leach was an elementary teacher for over 50 years. She taught for 46 years in Jersey, Greene, and Cass counties and for four years at St. John’s Catholic church in Carrollton. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier church, the National Education and Illinois Education Associations, and the Jersey-Greene County Retired Teachers Association. She is survived by two sisters, Mary Jane Copp of Springfield and Anna Thompson of Hillsboro, MO. And a niece, Mary Long of Hillsboro, MO; five great nephews and nieces. A friend, Forence Shortal, made her home with Mrs. Leach for 41 years. Her husband, Melvin Leach, whom she married 16 Feb. 1922 died 29 May 1960. Visitation from 4 to 9 pm Monday at Jacoby Funeral home where the rosary will be recited at 7 pm. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. The St. Francis Xavier church building fund and the American Cancer Society have been named as memorials.
LEACH. Unknown newspaper, 2 Jun. 1960: melvin E. “Mel” Leach, former Deputy Sheriff of Jersey county and at one time a member of the Illinois State Highway Police Force, died at five o’clock Sunday morning, 29 May at Barnes hospital in St. Louis where he had been removed by ambulance the previous Monday. (Picture of deceased appears in obituary) Mr. Leach’s health had been impaired since he underwent surgery in Nov. 1957. He recovered sufficiently from the surgery to become Deputy Sheriff of Jersey County in Dec. 1958, and served in that capacity for ten months. It was while Mr. Leach was Chief Deputy that the manhunt and capture of James Palmer, confessed killer, occurred in Jerseyville. Mr. Leach joined with other officers in a continuous search for the man from eleven forty-five o’clock Thursday night until twelve-thirty noon Friday. He rejoined the search Friday night and again Saturday morning and together with Chief of Police H .H. Blackorby was the first to reach Gorman Ready-Mix when a police dispatch carried the information that Palmer was being held there. He later became a salesman for Hutton Motor Company in Jerseyville but had been unable to work since last January at which time he was hospitalized for further treatment for five weeks. Mr. Leach returned to his home on West Arch Street on 26 feb, and had been seriously ill since that time. The decedent was born in Jersey county, 10 Oct. 1902, a son of the late Michael and Mary Highfill Leach. He was educated in local schools and for a time served in the United States Army. He was a member of the Illinois State Police Force during the administration of the late Henry Horner. His age at the time of death was fifty-seven years, seven months and nineteen days. His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Eva P. Leach, a teacher at the West Elementary school to whom he was married on 16 Feb. 1924 and one brother, C. Ray Leach of Blue Island, Il. His fraternal organizations include the Jerseyville Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Jerseyville Lodge, No. 394 A.F. & A.M. Ainad Temple, Scottish Rite Bodies, and the Loyal Order of Moose. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers funeral home where memorial services were held Monday night by the Elks Lodge. Funeral services were held at two o’clock Tuesday at the funeral home with Rev. Father Terry Shea officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.
LEACH. Unknown newspaper, 24 May 1973: “O. Leach, retired farm agent, died”: (Picture of deceased appears in obituary) Orlando Glenn (O. G.) Leach, retired farm agent of Jerseyville, died in his sleep early Monday morning at his home, 407 West Pearl Street. His health had been impaired the past six months and he was hospitalized during the early part of his illness. Funeral services for Mr. Leach were held at ten o’clock Wed. Morning at the First Baptist church in Jerseyville with Rev. Everett chambers officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Columbia, Missouri. Visitation was at the Gubser funeral home after four o’clock Tuesday afternoon. Masonic services were held there at eight o’clock that evening. The family designated the First Baptist church as a memorial. Mr. Leach had been a resident of Jerseyville since 1938 when he came as manager of Doane Agriculture Service. He retired after twenty-five years with Doane’s and opened a farm agency in offices on East Exchange Street. He had continued his own business for eight years. While living here, Mr. Leach became active in the work of the First Baptist church, in the community, fraternal groups and in other organizations. His church related work took him to important roles in the state Baptist organizations. He is a past president of the American Baptist Men of Illinois and the Illinois Baptist state convention. He was a charter member of the Jerseyville Rotary Club and had served as its president. He was a member of the Jerseyville Masonic Lodge, the Shrine, American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, and had been a member of the Piasa Bird Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He had also served as Roll Call Chairman of the Jersey County Chapter of the American Red Cross for two years. A few years ago, he was chosen by the Jerseyville Jaycees for their distinguished service award in recognition of his contribution to community and church endeavors. Mr. Leach, a son of the late Oscar P. and Hattie B. Hullett Leach, was born in Calloway, Missouri, 18 Jun. 1896. His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Blanche Hall Leach; one son, Rev. Glenn Leach of Springfield; one daughter, Mrs. William (Charlotte) Glenn of St. Louis; four grandchildren; four step grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Margie Prather of Columbia.
LEAK. Republican Examiner, Jan. 1917: Mrs. F. A. Fesenmeyer received a telephone message from Litchfield Saturday stating that her uncle, Abraham Leak, died Friday at St. Francis hospital, aged 77 years. Remains were brought to Jerseyville Monday to Oak Grove cemetery. He was a former resident of Jerseyville.
LEAK. Republican Examiner, 7 Oct. 1881: Ella Worthington Leak, born 2 Sep. 1857 at Jerseyville, Ill.; married 12 Sep. 1880 to Henry Leak of Jerseyville, and died 12 Sep. 1881. She joined Second Presbyterian church, later the First Presbyterian church. Henry died 12 Sep. 1881.
LEAK. Jerseyville Republican 5 May 1904: Henry C. Leak died at San Antonio, Texas, Monday 2 May 1904, 51 years old. Funeral from Presbyterian church. Rev. J. G. Keene. Burial under auspices of A. Steelman Camp MWA.
LEAK. Unknown newspaper, July 1897: Mrs. Henry C. Leak died at her home after working overtime to can fruit, possible heat stroke. She was 38 years old, leaves five small children. Funeral from Presbyterian church to Oak Grove; Revs. Kearns and Porter. The Presbyterian chorus sang. Pallbearers Were: G. H. Woodruff, J. K. Cadwallader, H. S. Daniels, Leon Engel, C. Q. Daniels and E. Frieze. At the cemetery Mrs. Albert Tack, Noble Grand of Rebekah Lodge, conducted a service assisted by Mrs. Sam Snedeker, and Mrs. L. Allen. Mrs. Leak was formerly Lillian Worthington.
LEAK. Unknown newspaper, 21 Apr. 1981: Jack Leak, 73, of 9911 Hawthorn Drive, Sun. City, Ariz., formerly of Jerseyville, died 13 Apr. at the Boswell hospital there from a heart attack. He was born 16 Aug. 1907 in Rocky Ford, Colo. His wife is the former Hazel Murray of Jerseyville, a former business teacher at Jersey township high school. Leak was retired from the San Francisco Chronicle. He was a linotype operator at the Jersey County Democrat News for several years. The Leaks moved to Sun. City from Terre Linda, Calif. In 1973. Additional obituary; Unknown newspaper, 5 May 1981: A graveside memorial service for Jack Leak, 73, of 9911 Hawthorn Drive, Sun. City, Ariz. Will be conducted at 2 pm 5 May at Oak Grove cemetery by the Rev. M.E. Breed. His death occurred 13 Apr. at the Boswell hospital there from a heart attack. Cremation followed. The First United Presbyterian Church, Sun. City was named as a memorial. Leak was an active member of the Sun. City First United Presbyterian church and a member of the Desert Aires Barbershoppers. His survivors are his wife, Haze; one Sister, Loretto L. Ritter of Sun. City, and a brother, Howard S. Leak of Tempe, Ariz. A memorial was held at the Memorial Chapel at the First United Presbyterian church in Sun. City Friday morning. In lieu of flowers donations to the church memorial fund are preferred, 1225 103rd Ave., Sun. City, Ariz. 85351.
LEAK. Jerseyville Republican, 2 Jan. 1919: Edward F. Leak, 71 years old, died at his home on West Exchange Street Sunday, 29 December. He engaged in milling business. From Hillsboro he went to Rocky Ford, Colo and to McGill, Nevada where he retired. He returned to Jerseyville in June 1918. Funeral at Methodist church, burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Hickory Grove Camp had charge of services, Rev. F. O. Wilson. He leaves wife, two daughters; Mrs. Frank Fesenmeyer of Jerseyville and Mrs. C. A. Deisch of Napanee, Md.; one Son, E. C. Leak, Ely, Nevada. A second son, Oliver died last August in Jerseyville. A daughter, Esther, died in infancy.

Oliver was born at Hillsboro, IL on 4 Jun. 1882; died at home on West Exchange Street in Jerseyville on 17 Aug. 1918. He leaves parents, two sisters and one brother: Mrs. C. A. Deisch of Napanee, Ind; Mrs. F. A. Fesenmeyer of Jerseyville; Edward C. Leak of McGill, Nevada. Funeral was from home, Rev. f.o. wilson. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery.

LECKNER. Unknown newspaper: Jerseyville – Hannah J. Leckner, 99, died at 3pm Sunday 20 Nov. 1988 at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville. Born in Belleville, she was the daughter of the late Celestine and Catherine (Honer) Epple. She married Jesse Leckner 21 Jun. 1919 in Chicago. He died 18 Sep. 1976. Surviving are a daughter, June Wilson of Jerseyville; four grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. Visitation is 5-9 pm Tuesday at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville where services will be conducted 10 am Wed. by the Revs. Dan Harry and Mike Michels. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery at Jerseyville. Memorials may be give to the First United Methodist church of Jerseyville, where Mrs. Leckner was a member.
LECKNER. Unknown newspaper, Sep. 1976: Services for Jesse William Leckner, 87, of 913 W. Pine St., Jerseyville were held at 2 pm on 20 Sep. at Jacoby Funeral home with the Rev. R. E. George officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. His death occurred at 3:05 am on 18 Sep. at Jersey Comm. Hospital. He was born 3 May 1889 in Illinois, a son of William and Catherine Guthridge Leckner and was a sewing machine repairman. A World War I veteran, Leckner was a member of the Jerseyville American legion, World War I barracks and Jerseyville AF & AM. His survivors are his widow, the former Hannah J. Epple; one daughter, Mrs. William (June) Wilson of Jerseyville; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren. Graveside services were in charge of the American Legion. The family designated the Lewis and Clark TB and Respiratory Disease Ass’n as a memorial.
LEDBETTER. Unknown newspaper: Jerseyville – George Richard Ledbetter, 88, died at 3:40 am Mon., 5 Sep. 1988 at Jersey Comm. Hospital in Jerseyville. Ledbetter was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He retired in 1967 from Lutheran General Hospital as maintenance foreman. Born in Cave-in-Rock, he was the son the late Richard and Mildred (Brittian) Ledbetter. He married the former Opal Ingram in 1944, in St. Louis. She died 1 Jan. 1987. Surviving are a son, Tom Ledbetter of Jerseyville; a grandchild; and a great grandchild. Visitation will be 6-9 pm today at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville where services will be conducted 10 am wed. Burial will be in St. Trinity Lutheran cemetery at St. Louis. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association.
LEE. Unknown newspaper, 21 Oct. 1897: died at the home of her sister, Mrs. A. E. Otto of Alexandreia, Ind. On 18 Sep. 1897, Mrs. Anna May Turner Lee, age 33 years. Annie M. Turner was born in Jerseyville 22 Apr. 1864, the third daughter of Lewis H. and Jane Turner. When 12 years old her parents moved to Kane. Two years later her father died and she and mother returned to Jerseyville. At the age of 18 she worked at Resenheim, Levis & Co. as milliner, as her mother had died that year. She spent a year in Mexico with relatives, then to Denver; then to Leadville, Colo. She married will G. Lee of Coschocton, Ohio on 1 Jan. 1890. One son was born in Oct. 1890; he lived one day. They went to Phoenix for husband’s health. He died there on 10 Jun. 1891. Anna went to her sister in Meade where her daughter was born, and returned to Phoenix. Health caused her to go to her sister’s. She died at sister’s home; left little daughter and six sisters, Mrs. Jennie Hamilton of Meade, Kansas, Mrs. Nettie Otto of Alexandria, Ind. and Miss Tillie Turner of Philadelphia, Pa. She joined the Presbyterian church in Jerseyville when 17 years old. Her daughter’s name is Gladys.
LEE. Unknown newspaper, 1908: Miles Lee, formerly a resident of Jerseyville, died in a St. Louis hospital last week, after a prolonged illness.
LEEK. Unknown newspaper: “Final rites for A. F. Leek at Wood River”: final services for Amos F. “Doc” Leek, 70, of Wood River, formerly of Jerseyville, were held Friday afternoon at Marks mortuary in Wood River with interment in Memorial Park cemetery in St. Louis. His death occurred 13 May at St. Anthony’s hospital in Alton. He was born 13 Jun. 1900 in St. Louis. He had lived in Wood River for eight years and was previously from the Jerseyville-Fieldon area. He had operated a dry cleaning establishment in Jerseyville. Mr. Leek was a member of the First Baptist church in Fieldon and the Wood River World War I Barracks. He served with the army in World War I and was Assistant Director of Wood River Civil Defense. He is survived by his wife, the former Mildred Goble; a son, Francis Droit of Wood River; two grandchildren; and a brother, Elwood Leek of St. Louis.
LEEK. Jersey County Democrat, 3 Nov. 1898: Mrs. Martha A. Leek died at home in southeast part of city. Aged 65 years. Funeral from M.E. church, Rev. G. W. Shepherd.
LEEK. Jersey County Democrat, 7 Feb. 1918: Mrs. Millie Leek died 30 Jan. at her home about a mile south on the Shipman road. Aged 81 years. Funeral held from home; Rev. F. O. Wilson serving. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Additional obituary, Jerseyville Republican, 1918: Mrs. Millie Leek, 81 years old, wife of William Leek, died at her home one mile east of Jerseyville on the Shipman road. Funeral held on Friday, 1 Feb. with Rev. F. O. Wilson.
LEFAIVE. Unknown newspaper, 29 Feb. 1940: Frank Lefaive of Elsah died in Jerseyville at home of his sister, Mrs. Isaac Wiseman. Funeral was delayed until arrival of relatives from a distance. From Gubser funeral home; burial in Oakwood cemetery in Alton.
LEFAIVE. Unknown newspaper, 26 Apr. 1973: Funeral mass for Mrs. Margaret Cornelia (Maggie) Lefaivre, 74, of Grafton was celebrated Monday at St. Michael’s church, Beltrees, with Father Patrick Morrow celebrant. She died 20 Apr. at Calhoun Comprehensive Care Center, Hardin. Interment was in Scenic Hill cemetery. She was born 3 Aug. 1898 in Grafton the daughter of John and Mary Emery Hamilton. Her husband was the late Evans J. Lefaivre, supervisor in Quarry township for many years. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Phillip (Anna Mae) Hopley and Mrs. Constance Hughes of Grafton; and one son, George Lefaivre of Greenfield; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren. Her husband, parents and three brothers preceded her in death. Visitation was held Sunday at Jacoby Brothers funeral home where the rosary was recited at 4 pm.
LEGATE. Unknown newspaper, 24 Dec. 1981: Robert Henry Legate, 65, of Fosterburg, was pronounced dead at 2 pm Wed. at the home of a son, Robert G. in Godfrey. A lab technician at Shell Oil until retiring in 1978 after 43 years of service, he was born in Elsah, a son of the late Joseph and Ermina (Wedding) Legate. He married the former Carrie Templeton in 1940 in Godfrey, and she died in 1976. Surviving, in addition to his son, are two grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm Sat. at Gent funeral home, where a service will be held at 7:30 pm by Bethalto Masonic Lodge 406 af &am. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Sunday at the funeral home with the Rev. William D. Fester officiating, and burial will be in Rosedale, IL cemetery. Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children has been named as a memorial.
LEGATE. Unknown newspaper, 1958: Joseph Benjamin Legate, retired rural school teacher and a member of a pioneer and well known Jersey county family, died Tuesday at 7:55 pm in Tower View Nursing Home, Bunker Hill, at the age of 88. Mr. Legate, who had taught in the schools at Moro, Godfrey, South Roxana, Elsah, Hamburg, Standard City, and Rockbridge had been in failing health and a patient in the nursing home since 1955. He had been disabled since 1952 when he suffered a hip fracture and was hospitalized. After his release from the hospital he was cared for at the home of a daughter, Mrs. W. A. Pullen, who resides on a farm near Woodburn, until he entered the nursing home. Born at Meadow Branch, near Grafton, 18 Jun. 1870, Mr. Legate was the youngest and last of 11 children of the late Henry Leander and Mary Ann Skidmore Legate. Nearly all of his life was spent in Jersey county. He had resided in Elsah from 1906 until he was disabled by the hip fracture. During summer months, while on vacation from his teaching duties, Mr. Legate had sold real estate and insurance and was widely acquainted in the Alton area. He is survived by his wife, the former Ermina Wedding of Rosedale to whom he was married 1 May 1895; his daughter, Mrs. Pullen, and a son, Robert H. Legate of Fosterburg. Three children, Thomas Winfred, Marie and Ann, preceded him in death. He also leaves six grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, five nieces and four nephews. Funeral rites will be conducted Sat. at 2 pm in Rosedale Methodist church by the Rev. John Henderson, pastor of Main Street Methodist church. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery. The body is at Jacoby-Wise funeral home, Bunker Hill, where friends May call Thursday evening and until time the body is taken to Rosedale for rites Saturday.
LEGATE. Unknown newspaper, 16 Jan. 1969: Clark L. Legate, who served as a member of the Board of Supervisors of Jersey county from Rosedale township for sixteen years prior to his retirement last November, died unexpectedly Monday in St. Petersburg, Florida. Mr. Legate was stricken ill while on a shopping trip and was dead on arrival at a hospital. The former Rosedale resident had resigned from the County Board in November and with Mrs. Legate had gone to Florida where they had established their home at 328 11th Avenue, N.E. St. Petersburg. Mr. and Mrs. Legate had disposed of a portion of their real estate holdings in the county before leaving here. Mr. Legate, who was 65 years old, was a son of the late Luther and Addie Duncan Legate. Surviving him are his wife, one son, Marlo Legate of St. Petersburg, five grandchildren, and three brothers, Mason Legate of St. Petersburg, Earl and Wesley W. Legate of Grafton. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Legate are spending the winter in Florida and the Wesley Legates left for St. Petersburg upon receiving word of the death of his brother. Funeral services were held Wed. in St. Petersburg and burial was in that city.
LEGATE. Unknown newspaper, 19 Aug. 1976: Funeral services for Abbie Mary Legate, 84, of 2013 Hazel Street, Alton will be held at the Gubser funeral home at 2 pm, 21 aug, the Rev. R. E. George officiating. Burial will be at Scenic Hill cemetery, Grafton. Mrs. Legate was born in Grafton 7 Oct. 1891, the daughter of Charles and Mary McCauley Stafford. She was married to Samuel Harrison (Harry) Legate who died in August of 1952. She died at 2:20 am 19 Aug. at VIP Manor in Wood River. LEGATE. Jerseyville newspaper, Thurs. 12 Nov. 1959: “Sister died in Fort Worth”: Edward L. Highfill and his sister, Mrs. Fannie Slaten, received word Sunday of the death of their sister, Mrs. Maud Legate at Fort Worth, Texas. Mrs. Legate was the daughter of the late Melvin and Sarah Highfill of Grafton. She was born 28 Oct. 1886 and was married to R. L. Legate, also of Grafton in Texarkana, Arkansas 21 April 1907, and they later moved to Fort Worth, where Mr. Legate passed away several years ago. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Fort Worth. Mrs. Legate is survived by one Son, R. L. Legate of houston and three daughters, Mrs. Leona Phillips and Mrs. Fay Pollock of Fort Worth, and Mrs. Marguerite Applebee of Kansas City, Kansas.
LEGATE. Unknown newspaper, Feb. 1981: Services for Wesley W. Legate, 84, a retired grain and livestock farmer of R. 1, Grafton were conducted Sunday from Gubser funeral home with the Rev. Leonard Todd officiating. Burial was in the Hartford cemetery near Grafton. He died at 9 am 19 Feb. at Alton memorial hospital. The World War I veteran was born 23 Aug. 1896 in Jersey county, a son of the late Luther and Addie Mae Duncan Legate. Legate was a 50 year member of three organizations, Masonic Full Moon Lodge No 341; Grafton American Legion Post 648 and Order of Eastern Star Chapter 318. He was also a member of the Ainad Temple, Shriners of East St. Louis. A Masonic service was conducted Saturday evening at the funeral home. Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children has been named as a memorial.
LEGATE. M. B. Legate 90, a resident of Jersey county for many years, died Monday morning, March 13, at his home in Mena, Ark. Boles as he was familiarly known farmed and taught school in the western part of Jersey county from 1865 until 1898 when he engaged in the real estate business at Mena, Ark. His wife died there in December 1907. Mr. Legate observed this 90th birthday on Friday, March 10th. Mr. Legate is survived by two sons, Ray of New Your City and Clyde of Chicago, both graduates of Arkansas University at Fayetteville; his second wife and four brothers, Elijah and George Legate of Springfield, MO., Henry of Wichita, Kan., and J. B. Legate of Elsah. Funeral services were in Mena and interment was beside his first wife.

He was born in Grafton 30 Aug. 1911, a son of Harry and Alma Suddeth Legate. He is survived by his wife, the former Ethel Click; two sons, Herb of Houston, Tex., and Gail of Los Alamos, N.M.; one daughter, Lois Morin of Almagordo, NM; 14 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; a sister, Cora Schaaf of Jerseyville and a brother, Earl Legate of Wood River. Two brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.
LEGATE. Unknown newspaper: Grafton – Edith C. Legate, 91, died at 8:20 pm Fri., 10 Jan. 1992 at Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton. She was a member of Grafton United Methodist church; 50 year member and past matron of Grafton Order of Eastern Star Lodge 318; and Charter Member of Marquette Unit Home Extension in Rosedale. Born 24 Jan. 1900, in Grafton, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Nancy (Simpson) Caslick. On 2 Mar. 1921, in Jerseyville she married Wesley William Legate. He died 19 Feb. 1981. She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Jean Richardson of Davenport, Iowa; a son, Maurice Legate of Grafton; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Visitation is from 4 to 8 pm today at Gubser funeral home in Jerseyville, where services are at 1 pm Monday. The Rev. Martha Horrell will officiate. Burial is in Hartford cemetery near Grafton. Memorial may be made to the Hartford cemetery fund.
LEGATE. Unknown newspaper, 31 July 1952: Sam Harrison Legate died 30 July at home on East Arch Street, a son of the late Sam. and Ida Stafford Legate, he was born at Grafton on 14 Sep. 1888. Aged 73 years. Surviving are his wife, Abbie Legate; two sons, Ronald Legate and Charles Legate of Scranton, PA; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Bell of Wood River and Mrs. Edward Highfill of Grafton; one brother, Leon Legate of Fort Worth, Texas. Unknown newspaper dated 28 Dec. 1967: ” Mrs. Legate funeral rites in Rosedale”: Funeral services will be held this (Thurs) afternoon at 1:00 o’clock at the Rosedale Methodist church for Mrs. Ermina Wedding Legate, 94, widow of J. B. Legate, who passed away Tuesday morning at the Tower View Nursing Home at Bunker Hill where she had been a patient for four years. Interment will be in the Rosedale cemetery. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby-Wise funeral home in Bunker Hill after 4 pm Wednesday. Mrs. Legate was born in Rosedale, 2 Sep. 1873, the eldest of five daughters of Thomas and Mary Crull Wedding. Most of her life was spent in Jersey county where she attended the Rosedale elementary school and Jerseyville high school. Mrs. Legate was formerly an elementary teacher in the Rosedale and Buena Vista schools. She was a resident of Elsah for over forty years and a member of the Elsah Methodist church for sixty years. Her survivors are a daughter, Mrs. W.R. Pullen of Bunker Hill, a son, Robert H. Legate of Fosterburg, one sister, Miss Cora Wedding, a patient at the St. Anthony’s hospital in Alton, six grandchildren, eighteen great grand children, nieces and nephews. Her husband and three children preceded her in death. The family designated the Elsah Methodist church as a memorial fund. Mr. Legate has been ill at his home for several days.
LEGATE. Unknown newspaper, 19 May 1977: services for Earl Edwin Legate, 79, of Grafton, retired rural mail carrier, were conducted at Jacoby Brothers funeral home at Grafton at 2 pm on 19 May. The Rev. Robert Patterson of Grafton officiated. He died at 5:09 pm on 16 May at Jersey Comm. Hospital. Born 21 Mar. 1898 in Jersey county, he was a son of Luther and Addie Duncan Legate. Mr. Legate was a member and past Master of the Full Moon Masonic Lodge 341, Grafton; 50 year member of Grafton Methodist church; World War I veteran and member of Whalen Post, Grafton American Legion. He had served as a Scoutmaster for 15 years, awarded the Silver Beaver. His survivors are his widow, Mrs. Leila I. Larby Legate; three sons: Edwin Wayne Legate of Godfrey, Orval W. Legate of Fort Meyers, Fla.; and Oran Earl Legate of Dorsey; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and two Brothers, Wesley Legate of Grafton and Mason Legate of St. Petersburg, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Orville and Clark Legate. Masonic services were conducted Wed. evening at the funeral home. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery.
LEGATE. Unknown newspaper, 10 Feb. 1981: Walter F. Legate, 54, of San Diego, Calif., formerly of this area, died of cancer at 5:30 am 4 Feb. at his home. He was the son of the late Harry and Alma Suddeth Legate. His survivors are his wife, the former Shirley Gentry; one daughter, Kathy Jones of Alton; two sons, Martin and Thomas, both of Texas; one granddaughter, Carson Jones; a sister, Cora Schaaf of Jerseyville; two brothers, Howard of El Paso, Tex. and Earl of Wood River. Four sisters and a brother preceded him in death. His body was donated to medical science. Memorial services will be held at the First Presbyterian church in San Diego following cremation. The organ fund of the First Presbyterian church, 4th and Date St., San Diego, Calif. Has been designated as a memorial.

James Vaughn of Bethalto officiating. Interment will be at Meadow Branch cemetery in Grafton. Mrs. Legate was born 23 Aug. 1885 in Jersey county, the daughter of the late James and Harriet Barnhart Suddith. She died at 12:05 am 2 Dec. at VIP Manor in Wood River, where she had been a resident since 30 Mar. 1973. Survivors include three Sons, Earl of Moro, and Howard and Walter of El Paso, Tex; three daughters, Mrs. Charles (Myrtle) Crull of East Alton; Mrs. William (Cora) Schaaf of Jerseyville, and Mrs. Floyd (Thelma Shaw of Moro, and 27 grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death in Feb. of 1973.
LEGATE. Unknown newspaper, 1 Mar. 1973: Funeral rites were held at the Gubser funeral home in Jerseyville at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon for Harry Monroe Legate, a former resident of Grafton. Rev. Louis Estes of Rosewood Heights officiated at the service and burial was in Meadowbrook cemetery. Visitation was held at the Gubser funeral home. The death of Mr. Legate occurred at eleven-thirty o’clock Sat. morning at the Wood River Comm. Hospital where he had been a patient for a short time. He was making his home in Moro with Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Shaw. The latter is his granddaughter. Mr. Legate, son of William Floyd and Josephine Mutzler Legate, was born 8 Oct. 1883. He was a retired farmer. Surviving Mr. Legate are his wife, Alma, of Moro; three sons, Earl of Moro, and Howard and Walter of El Paso, Texas; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Myrtle) Crull of East Alton and Mrs. William (Cora) Schaaf of Jerseyville, his granddaughter, Mrs. Shaw, nine other grandchildren, and nineteen great grandchildren. One son and three daughters preceded him in death.
LEGATE. Jerseyville Republican, 31 Jan. 1924: William Legate for 50 years a resident of Meadow Branch, died 29 Jan. 1924, aged 83 years. Born in Jackson Co., IL, 11 Sep. 1840, he married Mary Enlow. Three children were born: Luther of Grafton, Mrs. Walter Wadlow of Table Rock, Neb.; Mrs. Frank Bowers of Alton. Mrs. Legate died 26 Aug. 1877. Mr. Legate married Josephine Metzler who also preceded him in death. Three children born to this union are: Floyd E. of St. Louis, Harry of Grafton, Mrs. Jesse Johnson of Grafton. Funeral from Meadow Branch church, Rev. Milton Wahl. Burial in Meadow Branch cemetery.
LEGATE. Jersey County News, Thurs, 28 July 1927: Ella Lorena Legate, nee Wallace, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wallace, was born 3 Dec. 1908 and passed away at St. Joseph’s hospital, Alton, Il., Sun. at 2 o’clock am., having attained the age of 18 years, 7 months and 14 days. She was born in the vicinity of Grafton, Attended Liberty and Independence schools and was a bright, obedient pupil and all her schoolmates were her friends. She was one of a large family of 12 children and was the first one called home except a little infant brother that never lived after birth. She was united in marriage to Roe Legate in Sep. 1926 in Alton. They established their home in Alton where the young husband found employment and they were indeed a happy couple and their home was a happy one. This happiness was made greater by the arrival of a little daughter, Thelma Lorena, but this happiness was soon changed to deepest woe when the cold merciless hand of death, the grim destroyer of all happiness, entered that once happy home and robbed it of its greatest treasure, the wife and mother. She seemed to be doing fairly well for the first few weeks, then she began to fail and it was thought best by her physician and loved ones that she be removed to a hospital, which was immediately done. There it was found necessary to use blood transfusion as a method of saving her life. Relatives of both her husband and herself willingly offered their blood, but all this was unsuccessful. All that willing hands could do was done to save her life. Death is sad at all times but when it comes just in the mine of life it is sad in the extreme. This young husband, not yet 21 years of age, administered to her every want, and could scarcely be induced to leave her casket to eat or sleep. During her stay at the hospital she read the bible and became greatly interested in it and said she was greatly benefited by reading its chapters and remarked that she had made her peace with God. She passed away seemingly without pain just like falling asleep. It seems so sad and strange to think, in this great world of ours, that one so young and loved by all, should perish with the flowers. Then came the sad home coming, which was the saddest event that ever happened in that home. Mr. Streeper, undertaker from Alton, had charge of the funeral and knew and understood his business well. Interment, Tuesday, 19 July was at Hartford cemetery. Rev. Struebling of Grafton conducted the funeral service assisted by the choir of the M.E. church of Grafton. She leaves to mourn her, young husband, baby daughter, Thelma Lorena, mother, father, her aged grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Wallace, six brothers, Raymond, Perry, Leonard, Claude, Lewis and Durward; 4 sisters, Zella Carpunky, Juanita, Maurine and Irma; uncles, aunts, cousins and a large circle of friends. The great profusion of floral offerings were both beautiful and expensive. The esteem in which she was held was shown by the large crowd of surrounding friends who had gathered to show a last tribute of respect. To those loved ones that are left to mourn, to the grief stricken father and mother, brothers and sisters, to the young husband who is facing the severest trial of his life who tried so hard to control himself and who acted with the judgment of one many years his senior, we extend our deepest sympathy. They do not mourn alone. Not only do the relatives grieve but all their friends. It seems as though death and sorrow has entered every home. This death has cast a gloom all over the neighborhood. She will be greatly missed. We ask them to not grieve, to put their trust and faith in god who doeth all things well. Oh, rest sad hearts and cease repining, behind the clouds the Sun. is shining. Thy fate is the common fate of all, into each life some rain must fall. Not now but in the coming years, it May be in the better land, we’ll know the meaning of our tears, and then, oh, there we’ll understand….by a friend of the family.
LEGG. Unknown newspaper, 1908? : Miss Sarah Legg was found dead in her bed Thursday morning about 7:45 by her niece, Mrs. Frank Ware, with whom she made her home. Miss Legg was in her 75th year, and a well known, highly esteemed lady, and a long time resident of Jersey county. She made her home with the Osborn family, principally with her niece, Mrs. Nellie Osborn Ware. Death was due to heart failure. She had not been ill at all. She was called as usual and no response being received, her room was entered and was discovered to be dead. Her demise apparently about 5 o’clock. Funeral was held from residence in Woodlawn Saturday at 2:00 pm, Rev. J. H. Jones officiating.
LEGGETT. Jersey County News, Thurs, 13 Jan. 1927: Washington Leggett died at his home in Fieldon Saturday, 8 Jan. at 7:45 am. He was aged 77 years, 5 months and 6 days. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, 10 Jan. at 2:00 o’clock at the Fieldon Presbyterian church, Rev. Rueben Russell officiating. Interment was in the Fieldon cemetery.
LEHMKUHL. Jersey County Democrat, 11 Feb. 1915: Almira Lehmkuhl, daughter of William and Nancy Montgomery, was born in Otterville, Ill. 3 Oct. 1851, and was married to W. H. Lehmkuhl 6 Oct. 1870. To this union three children were born, viz: Wm. F., John L. of Otterville, and Preston M. who died 30 Nov. 1912. She was converted and united with the Baptist church in 1873. She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, W. H. Lehmkuhl, her two sons, three sisters, Mrs. J. A. Barton and Mrs. Isabella Giers of Otterville and Mrs. Edward Nutt of Madison, Ill.; also the following brothers, Hugh Montgomery of Madison, Ill., James F. Dodson of Grafton, and Aaron Dodson of Alton and the following grandchildren, Harry, Pauline, Mark and Lucile Lehmkuhl of Otterville and Wesley Lehmkuhl of Jerseyville, besides a host of relatives and friends. She departed this life Tuesday afternoon, 9 Feb. 1915, aged 63 years, 4 months and 6 days. “A precious one from us has gone, a voice we loved is stilled; a place is vacant in out home that never can be filled. God in his wisdom has recalled the boon his love had given, and though the body slumbers here the soul is safe in heaven.”
LEHMKUHL. Unknown newspaper, 9 Aug. 1975: Final services for Mrs. Lottie E. Lehmkuhl, 85, were conducted on 8 Oct. from the Gubser funeral home with the Rev. Everett Chambers officiating. Burial was in the Otterville cemetery. Her death occurred at 12:55 am on 6 Oct. She had resided at 701 E. Pearl Street until a year ago, and has since resided at the Jerseyville care center. She was born in Jersey county 3 Dec. 1889, a daughter of Archilles and Nancy Roady Graves. Her husband, Leo Lehmkuhl, died in 1938. Her only survivors are nieces and nephews.
LEHMKUHL. Jersey County News, 15 Dec. 1927: Funeral of William H. Lehmkuhl, well-known merchant of Otterville, who died Friday at the home of his son, Leo Lemkuhl, in Otterville, was held in the Baptist church at Otterville, Rev. A. B. Carson. Burial was in Otterville cemetery. Aged 75 years. He was one of the oldest, as well as most active residents of Otterville and had a wide circle of friends. He leaves two sons, William of Alton and Leo of Otterville. He was a veteran of the Civil War.
LEHR. Unknown newspaper, 7 Dec. 1983: Batchtown– Ethel Lehr, 54, died at 6 pm Monday at Jersey care center in Jerseyville. She was born in Calhoun county, daughter of Anna (Keim) Friedel of Hardin and the late George Friedel. Surviving are four Daughters, Annette Bott and Jo Ann Lehr, both of Alton, Barbara Margherio of Michael and Linda Loellke of Jerseyville; three sons, Edward of Alton, Timothy of Cottage Hills and Vincent of Batchtown; four grandchildren; two Sisters, Rita Klaas of Meppen and Sister Mary Gabriel; eight brothers, Aloys Friedel of Jerseyville, Edward and George Friedel, both of Bethalto, Gabriel and Patrick Friedel, both of Batchtown; Joseph Friedel of Hardin, Charles Friedel of Bushnell, and Rev. Norbert Friedel of California. Visitation will be after 6 pm today at Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin. A rosary will be recited this evening. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 am Thursday at St. Barbara’s Catholic church in Batchwith the Rev. Louis Schlangen as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s cemetery in Meppen. Memorials will be made to the family’s choice.
LEIGH. Jersey County Democrat, 9 May 1889: Died 30 Apr. 1889, Maggie Gertrude, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Leigh, 12 years old. She was born in Jerseyville. Funeral from Baptist church with Rev. W. H. H. Avery. Pallbearers: Charles Slaten, Roy Landon, Robert Clark, Brainard Avery, Henry Reed and Charles Erwin. Additional obituary: Republican Examiner, Apr. 1889: died, 30 April, Maggie Gertrude Leigh, 12 year old daughter of William I. and Emily Leigh. Funeral from Baptist church with Rev. W. H. Avery.
LEIGH. Unknown newspaper: Edna Adelaide Leigh fell asleep in Jesus 10 May 1896(?). She was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Leigh, living eight miles west of Beatrice (Nebraska). She was born 15 May 1894. Her last illness was short but severe, her disease being diabetes, as a result of measles. All was done that loving hands could do to rescue her but her spirit took its flight to Jesus, who said, “suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” Young as she was she seemed to realize what was to happen and said that she wanted to go up there and be with Jesus. We know not why God took one so young and lovely but we question not the wisdom of him who ruleth all things. Her life, though short, was full of lessons of love and beauty, which will be influential to her many friends. The funeral was held at the Kilpatrick Congregational church, Friday afternoon, 12 May 1899.(?). Her sorrowing sisters carried her little white casket and placed it in front of a bank of lilacs. Kind friends sent tokens of love among which was a violet pillow and one of white lilacs, a heart of roses and bouquets of carnations. Interment was made in Friendship cemetery, where she was literally buried in flowers. Many friends assembled to pay a farewell tribute and the family who mourn her loss have the sincere sympathy of all in this sad bereavement. LEIGH. Democrat News, Jun. 1955: “Harry A. Leigh died on June 2 in California”: word of the death of Harry A. Leigh, former Jerseyville resident, was received Sat. by the Democrat News from Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Christy of Pasadena, Calif. Mrs. Christy was the youngest sister of Mr. Leigh. The decedent was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Austin Leigh and was born in Jerseyville. His grandfather, Wallace Leigh, was one of the early founders and settlers of Jerseyville. Mr. Leigh had resided in California for forty-seven years and was an employee of the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company for forty years. He was sixty six years old. The death of Mr. Leigh occurred 2 Jun. at the Veterans Administration Hospital. Masonic rites were held Tuesday afternoon, 7 Jun. at the Chapel of the Veterans Administration Cemetery, Sawtelle, California. The Sawtelle chaplain officiated at the graveside military rites. Mr. Leigh is survived by one brother, Herbert Leigh of Corona Del Mar, Calif. And five sisters, Alice, Margaret and Frances Leigh of Alhambra, Mrs. Mildred Watherston of San Gabriel, and Mrs. Anna L. Christy of Pasadena. He also leaves several nieces and nephews including Wallace Leigh of Alton and Mrs. Martha Leigh.

Unknown newspaper, 23 Oct. 1958: “Margaret Leigh died last month in California”: Mrs. Norman Sinclair of this city received word recently of the death of Miss Margaret Leigh of Alhambra, Calif., formerly of Jerseyville which occurred 19 Sep. in a hospital there following a heart attack. Miss Leigh is survived by one brother, Herbert Leigh of Coronado Del Mar, Calif., and four sisters, Miss Alice Leigh of alhambra, mrs Albert waterson of san gabriel, Calif., Miss Frances Leigh of Phoenix, Ariz. And Mrs. Spencer Christy of Pasadena, California. She was an aunt of Mrs. Ronald Bowen of Webster Groves, MO, and Wallace Leigh of Alton. Miss Leigh was preceded in death by two brothers, Postmaster Walter A. Leigh of Jerseyville and Harry Leigh of Hollywood, Calif.
LEIGH. The Daily Democrat, Tuesday 20 Feb. 1900: Martha Van Horn was born in Yardleyville, Bucks County, Pa., 25 Dec. 1811, and died at the home of her daughter near Jerseyville, Ill., 16 Feb. 1900, at the age of 88 years, 1 month and 22 days. On 12 Jan. 1832, she was married to Thomas Leigh in Penn. Four children were born to them, one of whom died by accidental shooting in early manhood; and three of whom, Mrs Cynthia Riggs, Wallace Leigh of Jerseyville and Edward C. Leigh of Beatrice, Nebraska, survive. The last of whom was not present at the funeral on account of sickness. Mrs. Leigh was the eldest of a family of eight children, only one of whom, a sister survives her, whose home is in Churchville, Pa. Ten grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren are left. The husband died 8 Feb. 1894, which event so stunned her, that she was never quite herself afterwards. For four years, or more, she was in a second childhood, when her conversations on most topics were disconnected, but upon one theme she never wavered, viz; a desire to see the loved ones gone on before. She often expressed a wish to go home and see them. Among her latest utterances was this: “I see grandpa standing in the sunshine.” The husband being a Quaker she adhered to that faith, though brought up under Presbyterian training. When she availed herself of church privileges in Jerseyville she attended the Methodist church. Mrs. Leigh was a woman in whom the virtues of industry, frugality, and charity were strongly emphasized. She was a mother, not only to her family, but to the neighborhood in which she lived. The children loved her, and shared largely in her thoughtfulness and bounty., she is enshrined in the memory of those to whom her motherly hands ministered as the years went by, who testify of her virtues. She lingered long on the shores of time and her feet grew weary on the journey; but she rests now where none grow weary. The above obituary was read at the funeral of Mrs. Martha Leigh by Dr. C. Mr. Joshua LEIGH, father of M. M. LEIGH of Kane, died suddenly, of dropsy of the heart, last Thursday morning, at the residence of his son. Mr. Leigh will be remembered by many of our citizens who have met him at the Commercial. His remains were taken to Trenton, N. J., for interment. Jersey County Democrat, January 13, 1880

The Rev. Tyril E. Bentley of St. Louis officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation hours were held at Bopp funeral home in St. Louis and later at the Gubser funeral home in Jerseyville. The death of Mr. Lemmons occurred Thursday at the Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis. The 52 year old former car salesman was born in Arkansas. The family resided in Jerseyville before moving to Kirkwood. His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Mary Lois Waters Lemmons; three daughters, Mrs. Leroy Hudson of Atlanta, Missouri, and Marcia and Tamara Lemmons at home; three brothers, Curtis of Salem, Missouri, Douglas of Washington, D.C. and Clay of Kansas City, Mo.; a sister, Mrs. Ava Million of Kirkwood, MO and three grandchildren.
LENINGTON. Unknown newspaper: Jerseyville – Phyllis Lenington, 45, died unexpectedly at 4:05 am Thursday 25 Jun. 1987 at Jersey Comm. Hospital in Jerseyville. She was born in Carrollton, daughter of the late William and Lilian (Osburn) Stringer. She married Leon Lenington on 13 Jan. 1956 in Jerseyville. He survives, in addition to four Sons, Robert Lenington of Carrollton, Larry and Douglas Lenington, both of Jerseyville, and Earl Barnes of Litchfield; two daughters, Sherrie Scoggins of Carrollton and Rita Holyfield of Grafton; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Green and Joyce Bell, both of Carrollton; and two brothers, George Stringer of Jerseyville and Robert Stringer of Carrollton. She was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Stringer, and a sister, Gertrude Robinson. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm today at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. John wilson will conduct services at the funeral home at 2 pm Saturday. Burial will be at Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville.
LENZ. Unknown newspaper, 1921: Mrs. Mary Albart-Lenz, following an illness of only a few weeks, passed away Thursday morning at 6:20 o’clock at her home on North Liberty Street in this city. The deceased was 74 years, 6 months and 21 days of age. Mrs. Lenz was the daughter of Catherine and Michael Albart, pioneer residents of Jersey county. She was married 30 Apr. 1865 to Joseph Lenz, who preceded her in death on 6 Aug. 1915. The deceased is survived by ten daughters and one son; Mrs. George Hetzel, Mrs. Anna Cummings, Mrs. Albert Hoelker, Misses Christine and Rosie Lenz, Mrs. D. D. Mac Dougal, Mrs. C. P. Atchison, Mrs. O. P. Powel, Mrs. H. R. Bohannan, all of Jersey County; Mrs. Carrie Quante of St. Louis and Charles W. Lenz of Jerseyville; all of whom except Mrs. Quante were with her at the time of her death. A daughter, Mrs. Dorothy L. Pruitt, died 23 April 1920, and five children died in infancy. Mrs. Lenz also leaves a brother, Nicholas Albart of Fidelity township, and a sister, Mrs. Rose Reher of Jerseyville. Funeral services will be held Monday, 22 May at 9:30 am from the Holy Ghost church, of which she has been a devoted member for more than half a century. High mass will be celebrated, Rev. John G. Gramke, celebrant. Interment in Catholic cemetery.

LERESCHE. Jersey County Democrat, 10 Nov. 1898: Died at home on West Pine Street, 3 Oct., 36 years old. He leaves wife and four sons. He clerked in stores in Belleville and O’fallon and then to Jerseyville in Marston & Halliday’s. In 1893 he went into business for himself in partnership with William Harding. He married July 1885 to Ellen cartwright. Four sons survive: Paul, Herald, Louis, and Maurice. Pallbearers Were: J. G. Marston, Thomas Hanley, B. W. Arkard, George H. Woodruff, Jacob Wagner, and John Keehner. Louis Leresche was born in this city 5 Sep. 1862. Funeral from Baptist church; procession led by light guard band and the city band. He was a musician of rare ability. “He lived for those who loved him; for those who held him true; for the heaven that shone above him; and the good that he could do.”

Levene of St. Louis in 1877 in Jerseyville. Four sons and three daughters were born: John, deceased; Thomas E.; Joseph F.; Matthew A.; Mary E.; Ross A.; and Margaret E. She was member of Fieldon Council, No. 72, MPL. “She lived like a Rose from the garden of purity whereupon the earliest of the morning sun reflects the beauty of its delicate tints, and the fragrance of its perfume giving pleasure to those who come within the tropics of its blissful scent. Unknown newspaper, 11 Mar. 1947: Mrs. Delilah Catherine Levi of Rosedale was found dead in bed Wednesday morning, 9 April at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Bohannan on Maple Avenue, where she was spending the winter. Mrs. Levi had been in ill health and had been under the care of a physician for sometime. She was the daughter of the late John and Lavina Graves Ballard and was born in Jerseyville, 17 July 1868. Her age at the time of death was seventy-eight years, eight months and twenty-two days. Surviving Mrs. Levi are one son, William Levi of Rosedale, and five daughters, Mrs. Leslie Schaaf of Rosedale, Mrs. Jame Hickman, Mrs. Elizabeth Cory and Mrs. Charles Bohannan of Jerseyville and Mrs. Lee Lukens of Granite City. She also leaves one brother, William Ballard of Jerseyville, twenty-two grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Gubser funeral home Saturday afternoon, 12 April at two o’clock. Rev. Dale Harmon will officiate and interment will be in the Fieldon cemetery. Norman Jamison with burial in the Kane cemetery. He died at 12:15 pm, 1 Sep. at VIP manor in Wood River. He was born 22 Jan. 1893 in Alton, a son of William and Catherine Ballard Levi. After retiring from Shell Oil as a stell cleaner, he farmed. His survivors are two sons, Verlin of East Alton and Edgar of Alton; five daughters, Grace Woolsey, Alice Hausman, Zella Sons and Jessie Inman, all of Alton, and Mary Ford of Cottage Hills; 28 grandchildren; 66 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth Hooper of Grafton and Ruth Schaaf of Jerseyville. His wife, the former Amanda Ogden whom he married 11 Feb. 1913, died 17 May 1974. His parents, three sisters and a grandchild also preceded him in death. The Whitelaw Avenue Baptist church (Wood River) building fund has been named as a memorial.

He was District Forester, state of Illinois for 23 years, retiring in 1974. Lewis was a member of the Jerseyville Moose and Elks Lodges and St. John’s United Methodist church in Edwardsville. Born 25 Sep. 1918 in Edwardsville, he was the son of Inez Kremer Lewis of Edwardsville and the late Wallie Lewis. His survivors are his mother and a son, Bromley H. of Edwardsville. He was preceded in death by a daughter and one brother. Services will be held at 1 pm Wed. At Mateer funeral home, 210 N. Kansas, Edwardsville with the Rev. Boyd Wagner officiating. His age at the time of death was 66 years, four months, and 23 days. Lewis was born in Columbia, Ky., the son of the late Steven Douglas and Sarah C. Edwards Lewis. He was a railroad switchman. Survivors include his wife, Marguerete Young Lewis, of Madison; a daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Catherine) Marlow, of Collinsville; two grandchildren; and four sisters, Mrs. Jane Kamarit of Cahokia; Mrs. Lynn Friedeck of St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. Roberta Hughes of Roodhouse, and Mrs. Stella Willis of Jerseyville. His parents, two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at 1:30 pm 16 Nov. at Jacoby Brothers funeral home with the Rev. R. E. George officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.

A World War II U.S. army veteran, Lewis was a laborer for Watson’s Orchard in Grafton. He was born in St. Louis, son of the late William Joseph Lewis and Cora May (Dabbs) Spangle. Surviving are a sister, Gladys Palmer of Dow; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest and Joseph Lewis; and a Sister, Cora Mabel Winters. Visitation will be 4-8 pm Wednesday at Gubser funeral home in Jerseyville, where services will be conducted at 11 am Thursday by Rev. Mike Michels. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 at Hartford cemetery, near Grafton. Memorials may be given to the cemetery. A coroner’s inquest is pending.

His death occurred at 7:30 am on 8 Feb. at Blue Fountain Manor, Godfrey. Interment was in Scenic Hill cemetery. A retired carpenter and painter, he was born in Grafton 31 Aug. 1886, a son of Francis M. and Elnora West Lewis. Mr. Lewis was a member of the Grafton American Legion. He had served with the 334th Ambulance Co., in World War I. His survivors are one sister, Mrs. Stella Lewis Orr of Grafton; a brother, Clarence E. Lewis of Clarksville, Miss. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters. Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home. Services at the graveside were in charge of Whalen Hill Post, American Legion, Grafton.

Burial was in the Hartford cemetery near Grafton. He was pronounced dead at his residence, 208 Sherman Street, at 10:09 am. 10 Dec. from an apparent heart attack. His death was unexpected. He was born 4 Aug. 1902 in St. Louis, a son of the late William Joseph and Cora May Dabbs Lewis. He retired from Olin in 1964. He is survived by one son, Wesley Lewis of Alton; a Daughter, Norma J. Miller of Bethalto; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren; one sister, Gladys Palmer of Dow; and one brother William Jesse Lewis of Jerseyville. His wife, the Former Theresa Clary, died in 1963. The heart fund has been named as a memorial. A coroner’s inquest is pending.

She was born 10 July 1886 in Calhoun county, daughter of the late William and Sarah Clark Narup and was the widow of the late Dr. Carl Fredrick Lewis. She is survived by two sons, Dr. John David Lewis of Lake Charles and Paul H. Lewis of Kerrville, Tex; one daughter, Dorthea Kaniaupuni of Agana, Guam; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The rosary was recited at Jacoby Funeral home.

Lewis was born in St. Louis, MO. On 23 Sep. 1923 and was reared in Jerseyville. He was retired from the military. He is survived by his mother, Stella Willis, Jerseyville, his wife, Catherine Roth Lewis, formerly of Carrollton and one son, Kevin, of Scottsdale. Funeral mass was celebrated at St. Daniel’s church in Scottsdale and burial was at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale.

She was the daughter of John and Ida Ford Richey and was a licensed practical nurse. She is survived by a son, Everett R. Parsell of West Berlin, Germany. Rev. R. E. George officiated.
LEWIS. Unknown newspaper, 1918: The funeral of Robert Earl Lewis, son of Lt. and Mrs. Carl F. Lewis, was held Wednesday, 4 Sep. at 2 pm from the St. Francis Xavier’s church; Rev. Father J. J. Clancy officiating. Interment in the St. Francis cemetery. Robert, age two years, 4 months and twelve days, died at the home of his parents, on West Pine Street, Monday evening about 5 o’clock following a brief illness of acute indigestion, followed by spasms. He was the youngest of the Lewis sons. Frederick, aged six and Paul, aged four, with their father and mother survive. Lt. Lewis for the past four months has been serving his country as a medical officer with the 31st Regiment of Engineers in France. Before enlisting in the service, Dr. Lewis was practicing in Calhoun county and later moved his family to Jerseyville in order that he could reach home better when on leave from his duties at the training camps. The Lewis family have the sympathy of the entire community.
LEWIS. Unknown newspaper, 7 Nov. 1947: Carl Frederick Lewis, older son of Mrs. Mary J. Lewis of Jerseyville and the late Dr. Carl F. Lewis, was fatally injured on 2 Nov., in a car crash with an oil transport on route 67, 3 miles north of Godfrey. Lewis had served as an officer in both the Canadian and American Air Forces.
LEWIS. Jerseyville Republican, May 1905: William J. Lewis, residing in Rosedale township, transferring calves from one lot to another was attacked by a hog which inflicted a severe flesh wound in the thigh. He was born in Otter Creek township 7 Dec. 1874. In 1880 with his parents, he moved to Edgar, Nebraska; about 1889 moved to Manhattan, Kansas where his parents still reside. He returned to Jersey county and taught school for a time. In 1898 he married Cora Dabbs, daughter of Joshua Dabbs. Lived in St. Louis where Mr. Lewis was employed by a Street car company until 1903. They moved back to Jerseyville. He was known as a Christian gentleman. Services at Hartford church with Rev. Judd of Grafton Baptist church. Pall bearers Were: F. A. Lowe, Ernest Reed, Joseph Hildred, William Harris, Grant Thomspon and Henry Smith.

LEWIS. Republican Examiner, 10 Sep. 1880: Mrs. Phoebe Lewis died in Jerseyville on 5 Sep. 1880. Funeral was from First Presbyterian church with Rev. J. W. Stark. Her name was Roe. Born in Sussex County, New Jersey on 15 Apr. 1802; and at the same place, the home of her parents, she was married in 1824 to Levi Lewis. He was in mercantile business in new Jersey for 35 years. They left Hackettstown, NJ, and came west. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis have buried two sons, their oldest and their youngest. In March, 1859 with surviving children: Mr. Ford Lewis and Miss Hannah J. Lewis, they settled in Bloomington, IL but soon moved to Keokuk; then to Godfrey and then to Jerseyville, where Mr. Levi Lewis died 5 Feb. 1873. LEWIS. Republican Examiner, 10 Dec. 1880: John N. Lewis of Jersey county died on Tuesday last. Formerly the husband of Mrs. (Gen?) McDonald, and was divorced from her several years ago. According to the decree of divorce the child, now a Miss of 14 years, was given to the father, with whom she has lived. On Wednesday, Miss Lewis came to this city to consult Judge King, having heard that her mother, Mrs. McDonald would soon be here to claim her and take her away to her home.

She was born 16 May 1937 in English township, a daughter of Anthony and Dora Pieper Tonsor. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; one son, Charles, at home; two brothers, Kenneth Tonsor of Jerseyville and Maurice Tonsor of Fieldon; and two sisters, Mrs. Linus Drainer and Mrs Eugene Breitweiser, both of Jerseyville. Her parents and a daughter, Karen, preceded her in death. Visitation was held Wednesday evening at Jacoby Funeral home where the rosary was recited.

Liffets held Monday”: Final rites for Henry Charles Liffets, 63, of this city were held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Jacoby Brothers funeral home where visitation hours were held. His death occurred Friday evening at 9:45 at a Jacksonville hospital. Rev. William H. Smith of Jerseyville officiated at the rites with burial in St. Francis Xavier cemetery. A retired machinist at Baughman Manufacturing Company, he was born 22 Nov. 1906 in Macoupin county, the son of the late Charles and Mary Schrieber Liffets. Mr. Liffets was an employee at the International Shoe Company, Jerseyville branch, for many years. His survivors are his wife the former Agnes Cummings; one son, Kenneth E. Liffets of Jerseyville; three sisters, Mrs. Joseph Foster and Mrs. Roy Van Meter of Jerseyville, and Mrs. Lawrence Nunes of Jacksonville; two brothers, Roy and Edward Liffets of Jerseyville. One grandchild, Karen Liffets, preceded him in death.

Lee at St. Francis Xavier church for the funeral service of little Karen Marie Liffets. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery. Visitation hours were held Friday afternoon and evening at Jacoby Brothers funeral home. The death of Karen, Jersey county’s only transplant patient, occurred at nine-thirty o’clock on 15 July at the Pediatric Clinic of the Boston General Hospital in Boston, Mass., where she had been a patient since last December. Karen, the only child of Kenneth (Pat) and H. Marie Tonsor Liffets of 517 West Carpenter, was born in Jerseyville and would have been seven years old on 15 Sep. Her survivors in addition to her parents are her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Liffets, and her maternal grandfather, Anthony Tonsor, all of Jerseyville.

Miss Liles was born 7 Nov. 1937 in Jerseyville, the daughter of Ernest and Hazel Weller Liles. She died at 4:15 pm, 15 Aug. at Boyd Memorial hospital in Carrollton after an extended illness. She was previously employed at the Twin City Garment Factory in White Hall. Survivors include her parents, two brothers, Richard L. Liles, Jerseyville and Roger R. Liles, Kane; her grandmother, Mrs. Chris (Cora) Weller, Jerseyville and nieces and nephews. The Rev. R. E. George of the United Methodist church in Jerseyville officiated at the funeral service and interment followed at Oak Grove cemetery. The family designated the American Cancer Society as a memorial.

Raymond “Barney” Liles, 69, of r.1, Kane died at 12:15 am, 9 July at St. Mary’s health center, St. Louis, after a lengthy illness. Born in Jersey county 16 Apr. 1912, he was the son of Richard and Lavana Graves Liles. Liles retired with the rank of colonel from the United States Air Force and during retirement has served as interim pastor for several local churches. He entered service as a chaplain in 1943 during World War II and also served in the korean war. After the war he served as chaplain at VA hospitals in Wadsworth, Kan. And Memphis, Tenn and at John Cochran VA Hospital in St. Louis until the time of his death. Liles was a member of the Grafton Full Moon Masonic Lodge, Jerseyville VFW, Disabled Veterans, St. Louis Chapter. He was author of three religious books, “The Streams of Healing,” “I Will Look Up”, and “Imitations of the Master”. His survivors are his wife, Marjorie Rhoades whom he married 30 Mar. 1941 at the Kemper Baptist church; one Son, Paddy Liles of R. 1, Kane and a sister, Christina Woolsey, Jerseyville; four grandchildren. Three brothers preceded him in death. Services were conducted Saturday afternoon at the First Baptist church in Jerseyville by the Rev. V. Clay Noah with burial in the Kane cemetery. The First Baptist church or church of one’s choice has been named as a memorial.

She was a member of Eagles Auxiliary Lodge No 2747 and Order of the Eastern Star No. 656, both of Jerseyville. Born in New York City, NY, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Domenica (Alaimo) Guastella. On 13 Feb. 1959 in Carrollton, she married Richard Liles. Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Chris Bailey of Kampsville and Carol Short of Kane; a son, Peter Liles of Joliet; six grandchildren; and a sister, Ann Hofmeister of Toms River, NJ. Preceding her in death were two Sisters, Caroline Guastella and Chris Vitrano; and a brother, Jay Guastella. Visitation is from 4 to 9 pm Wednesday at Gubser funeral home in Jerseyville, with a rosary recitation at 7 pm. A funeral mass is at 10 am Thursday at Holy Ghost Catholic church in Jerseyville with the Rev. Lloyd Misho as celebrant. Burial is in St. Francis Xavier cemetery at Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to masses or the church, where she was a member.

He was born in Jerseyville, the son of Charles and Beatrice (Hayn) Liley of Eldred. Liley served 5 1/2 years in the U.S. Army. In addition to his parents, surviving are his wife, Dana; two Daughters, Rachel B. and Charity D. Liley, both at home; three Brothers, Eric Liley of Hawaii, Douglas Liley of Kentucky and Charles Liley, Jr. of Alton; and his Grandparents, Vernon J. Lillard came to Jerseyville several years ago to assume the pastorate of the Holy Cross Episcopal Church on the corner of East Pearl and Pleasant Street. He had been retired for sometime. LIMING. Jerseyville Republican, 25 Feb. 1915: Theodore Liming of Delhi, who was visiting his daughter, Mrs. Chappell of Alton, died suddenly at her home Monday, 15 feb. He had been suffering with rheumatism and fell down while crossing a room without regaining consciousness. Mr. Liming was born in Trenton, NJ on 28 Dec. 1837; in 1863 enlisted in the Second New Jersey Cavalry, was honorably discharged at Mobile, Ala., in 1865 and then came in the vicinity of Newbern, where he spent the greater part of his life. On 7 Jun. 1871, he was married to Miss Sarah Elizabeth Sterrart who presented four children to him and died 29 Nov. 1900. He was again married 12 May 1913, to Mrs. Grace Ward, who survives, besides one daughter, Mrs. Chappell, and one sister. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the East Newbern church and interment was made in the Newbern cemetery. Among those from a distance attending the last rites were Miss Jennie Ward and Mrs. Fannie Emrick of Edwardsville.

LINDSEY. Unknown newspaper, 12 Feb. 1979: services were conducted Sunday afternoon at Gubser funeral home for Melvin W. “Buck” Lindsey, 62, of 805 Sumner Street, Jerseyville. The Rev. L. E. Hutchinson and the Rev. Kenneth Schmidgall officiated. He died at 9:25 am 8 Feb. at Jersey Comm. Hospital. Lindsey retired five years ago as a sheet metal mechanic out of Local 36, St. Louis. The Lindseys formerly operated a neighborhood Grocery, Lindsey’s Quick Shop. Born in Van Buren, MO. 11 Oct. 1916, he was the son of George and Rose Bedwell Lindsey. His survivors are his wife, the former Ruth Griffen; two sons, Charles of Jerseyville and Douglas of Florissant, MO.; one sister, Melba Rose White of Owensville, MO.; four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, and one sister. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. The heart fund has been designated as a memorial.

He was born 3 July 1889 in Pike county, a son of Ambrose and Nancy Smith Ling. He was formerly employed as a police dispatcher for the City of Jerseyville. Ling was a member of the First Baptist church. His wife, Hazel preceded him in death. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Roy (Roberta) Landon, Mrs. Lorene Gaither, and Mrs. Clifford (Eleanor) Bell.
LINK. Unknown newspaper, 26 Oct. 1967: “Otto Link dies in California”: Word has been received here of the death on 9 Oct. of Otto Link of Long Beach, Calif., a former Jerseyville business man. Mr. Link was the owner of Link’s restaurant in Jerseyville before the family moved to California ten years ago. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Celia Bauer, two daughters, Gerda and Kay, and a son, Fred. Funeral services were held 10 Oct. at 2:00 pm at Westminster Memorial part with burial there.
LINK. Unknown newspaper, 8 Apr. 1971: “Mass for Fr. Link Thursday”: Concelebrated requiem mass for Rev. Reinhold George Link, former pastor of St. Patrick’s church in Grafton and nature guide at Pere Marquette State Park, was held Thursday morning at 10 o’clock at St. Anthony’s church in St. Louis and burial was in SS. Peter and Paul’s cemetery in that city. Father Link, a resident of Eureka, MO, died 29 March at St. Joseph’s Hill infirmary in Eureka following a long illness. He had been retired since 1968. He was 75 years old. Father Link, a Franciscan priest, youth leader and former Illinois state naturalist, was born at Gillett, Wisconsin. He was ordained a diocesan priest on 12 Jun. 1921, and served as a diocesan priest for 31 years. He entered the Franciscan order on 4 July 1952. After his education at Quincy College at Quincy, he attended St. Louis University Kenrick Seminary, Chicago Teachers College and received his doctorate from the University of Rhode Island. He taught at Quincy High School, St. Joseph’s Seminary at Westmont and Nazareth Academy at La Grange. Father Link served as Boy Scout Leader, Director of Trail Rangers of America. He is survived by one brother, Philip Link of Springfield.

She was an accountant with the Illinois State Library in Springfield for eight years. Born in Jerseyville on 7 Jun. 1956, she was a daughter of William W. Ebker of Jerseyville and Gloria (Watts) McSchooler of Carrollton. In addition to her parents, surviving are a Son, Brent Douglas Lippmann of Jerseyville; a sister, Karen Chaplin of Jerseyville; grandmother, Gladys Watts of Jerseyville; stepfather, Lester McSchooler of Carrollton and stepmother, Beatrice Ebker of Jerseyville. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 pm today at Gubser funeral home in Jerseyville, where services are at 1 pm Tuesday. The Rev. Noel Gehm will officiate. Mr. Little was born 13 Sep. 1897 in Kane, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Little, and spent most of his life in Venice and St. Louis. He is survived by his wife, Forence, of St. Louis; a brother, John Little of Venice; two sisters, Mrs. George Murphy of Granite City and Mrs. Eva Hogan of Jerseyville. Mrs. Harold Bartlett of Route Two, Brighton, is his niece. The death of Mrs. Little, who had been in ill health for several months, occurred in Jacksonville at eight o’clock Tuesday evening. She was born in Scott county, 5 May 1899, a daughter of the late George and Sarah Vortman Middendorf. Her survivors are her husband, Levi Little; one son, Leon Little of Bethalto; three daughters, Mrs. Marcus (Opal) Becker, Mrs. Arnold (Alice) Devening, and Mrs. Robert (Doris) Madson, all of Jerseyville; three sisters, Mrs. Marie Westermeyer of Quincy, Mrs. Maye Gregor of Bluffs, and Mrs. Harry Werris of Meredosia, and sixteen grandchildren. Mrs. Little was a past president of the Jerseyville Demolay Mothers Club and Jersey County Home Bureau and had held offices in the Jerseyville oes chapter.

He was born in Jersey county, the son of Arby and Edna Charlton Little. He had lived in Springfield for 48 years, and was retired from the Sang Amo Electric Company. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Spangle Little, also originally from Jersey county, and three brothers, Clarence, Harold and Ralph Little. Surviving are his wife, Francis L. of Springfield, one daughter, Mrs. Norma schussler of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Pearl Street, Jerseyville will be held at 1 pm today, 3 Jun., at the Marquette Heights Baptist Church in Marquette Heights. The Rev. Carol Renshaw will officiate and interment will be in the Park View Cemetery, Peoria. His death occurred at 7 pm on 30 May at his home. He was born 12 Oct. 1897 in Pulaski, a son of John and Mary Needham Little and was retired from Caterpillar Mfg. in Peoria. Little was a member of the Bethany Baptist church at Godfrey. He is survived by one son, Charles Little of Jerseyville, a teacher at Illini Junior High; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews. His wife, Clara, died in 1967. Visitation was held on 1 Jun. at Gubser funeral home and on Wednesday at the Preston Funeral Home in Pekin.
LITTLE. Unknown newspaper, 20 Sep. 1976: Ralph Jennings Little, 73, of Orlando, Fla., a Jerseyville post office employee for 35 years, died in the hospital in Orlando, Fla. At 11:45 pm, 18 sep. Little was born in Winchester, 30 Oct. 1902, the son of Arbey and Edna Charlton Little. He was married to Gladys Wilcox in 1924. He retired from the post office in 1955 and has since made his home in Orlando. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, June Dingley of Englewood, Calif.; one grandchild; two brothers, Clarence of Jerseyville and Richard of Springfield. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Joyce. Visitation will be held at Gubser funeral home after 2 pm Tuesday, 21 Sep. until noon Wednesday when the body will be taken to the First Baptist church. Masonic services will be conducted at 7:30 pm Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Wednesday at the First Baptist church, the Rev. Everett Chambers officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. The family has designated the American Cancer Society as a memorial.

Clay Noah Jr, of the First Baptist church officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Little was born 10 Feb. 1906, in Winchester, the son of A. E. and Edna Charlton Little. He was married on 26 July 1924 in Havana to Mildred Mangold. He was a field engineer at Shell Oil Co. for 26 years, retiring in 1968. He was a lifetime member of the Eagles Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Mildred, one son, Donald Little of Jerseyville; two daughters, Eileen Parsell of Dover, NH; and Dolores Meek of Carrollton; 13 grandchildren; one brother, Russell Little of Springfield. The First Baptist church, where he was a member, has been designated as a memorial.

Raymond Liles officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. She died at 10:30 pm on 8 Nov. at Jersey Comm. Hospital. Born on 15 Nov. 1909 in doe, she was the daughter of Clarence E. and Edith S. White Updike. Her husband, Harold Little, died in 1966. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Melvin (Doris) Van Skiyer of Denver, Colo.; and Mrs. Gerald L. (Kaye) Duncan of East Peoria; one sister, Mrs. T. L. (Verna) Favoright of Jerseyville; two brothers, Clarence and Charles Updike of Jerseyville; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The family has named the Heart Fund or American Cancer Society as memorials.
LITTLE. Unknown newspaper, 11 May 1974: Mrs. Mildred Little, 72, of 621 S. Park, Springfield, who died on 26 Jun. at the Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, was buried in Oak Grove cemetery here. Funeral services were held 2 July at Bisch’s funeral home in Springfield. Her husband, Russell Little, and a daughter, Mrs. Norma Schussler of Canada, and two grandchildren survive. Mrs. Little was born in Jersey county, the daughter of George and Lazada McDow Spangle.

Unknown newspaper, 30 Jun. 1966: “Funeral rites Monday for Harold Little”: Funeral services for Harold Arby Little of Peoria, former Jerseyville resident, were held Monday afternoon, 27 Jun. at 1:30 o’clock at Jacoby Brothers funeral home with Rev. Carlton G. Christenson, pastor of the First Baptist church officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends called at the funeral home Sunday evening. Mr. Little, who resided at 2406 N. Central, Peoria, was dead on arrival at St. Francis hospital in that city Sat. morning at 9:25 o’clock. He had been ill for some time. Mr. Little was employed as a salesman for the Peoria Paper company. He was a son of the late Arby and Edna Charlton Little and was born in Jersey county on 18 Jun. 1910. He had observed his 56th birthday a week before his death. Surviving Mr. Little are his wife, Mrs. Alice Leah Updike Little of Peoria, two daughters, Mrs. Melvin (Doris) Van Skiver of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Gerald (Kaye) Duncan of Peoria, three grandsons, and three brothers, Ralph Little of orlando, Florida, Clarence Little of Jerseyville, and Russell Little of Springfield. Fraternally he was a member of Acacia Lodge No 67, A.F. & A.M., and consistory of Peoria.

He was well-known farmer and stock raiser; born 22 Oct. 1843 at the old Little homestead four miles north east of Jerseyville. He was unmarried; leaves two sisters: Miss Cornelia Little, who kept house for him and Mrs. Narcussus Cain of Sedalia, MO. Funeral from home; Rev. F. O. Wilson. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery.

He leaves wife, who was Mary Faulkner; five children from 2 to 12 years. Funeral from M.E. church, Rev. Mr. Roady of Kane. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery.

Little of Jacksonville, whose death occurred Thursday, 4 Dec. were held Sunday, 7 Dec. at two o’clock at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. The Rev. Laverne Poole, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Little are former residents of Jerseyville and observed their golden wedding anniversary just a year ago this month. In addition to her husband the deceased is survived by four sons, five grandchildren and one brother.

Unknown newspaper, 29 Nov. 1956: Funeral services were held at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon, 27 Nov. at Jacoby Brothers funeral home for Arbey Ellsworth Little, retired employee of the State of Illinois, whose death occurred at eight o’clock Sat. evening, 24 Nov. at the Waters nursing home where he has resided for some time. The Rev. Carl C. Moman officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr. Little was born in scott county, 25 Mar. 1882, a son of the late Luther A. and Susan C. Smithson Little. His age at the time of death was seventy-four years, seven months and twenty nine days. Before his retirement Mr. Little was industrial foreman at the State Hospital in Jacksonville. Surviving the decedent are four sons, Ralph J. and Clarence J. Little of Jerseyville, Russell A. Little of Springfield, and Harold A. Little of Peoria; five grandchildren, six great grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Bruce Teaney of Granite City. Mr. Little was a member of the First Baptist church of Jerseyville.
LITTLE. Unknown newspaper, 9 Dec. 1986: Levi Little, 81, died at 9:25 pm Monday, 8 Dec. 1986 at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville, where he had been a resident since July. Born in Wessington, SD, Little was a retired oil and gas salesman for Jersey County Farm Supply. He was the son of the late William and Lenora (Cox) Little, and had married the Former Salome Mittendorf on 3 Feb. 1926 in bluffs, il. She died 3 Feb. 1970. Then on 6 Mar. 1971, in Jerseyville, he married the former Ethel (Heath) Edwards, who survives. Also surviving are three Daughters, Opal Becker, Alice Devening and Doris Madson, all of Jerseyville; a son, Leon Little of Bethalto; two Stepdaughters, Joanne Miller of Florissant, MO, and Barbara Sackman of Jerseyville; 16 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and one step great grandchild. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 pm Wednesday at Gubser funeral home in Jerseyville. At 7 pm Jerseyville Masonic Lodge No 394 AF & AM will conduct rites. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 pm Thursday at the funeral home with Rev. Frederick Francis officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the Masonic endowment home in Sullivan, IL.

He had two older brothers and a sister, Mrs. William Forsythe. He Married Winnie Schierbaum of Jerseyville, IL on 28 Aug. 1895. He leaves wife, aged mother, two brothers and one sister. LLOYD. Unknown newspaper, 16 Mar. 1982: Word has been received of the death of Emily Jenkins Lloyd, 82, of Arden, NC. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Joseph Jenkins, pastor of the First Baptist church of Jerseyville from 1915 to 1920. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Charles Lloyd, a daughter, Beverly Kaap of Lagrange, Ga. and a son, Dr. Morgan Lloyd of Santa Barbara, Calif.
