KEBSCH. 3 December 1979: services for Clara J. Kebsch, 75, of 1200 W. Main, Grafton were conducted Monday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers funeral home, Grafton by the Rev. Robert Patterson. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey. Her death occurred at 12:20 am 30 November at Jersey Community Hospital. Her husband, Charles Kebsch, died 22 April 1977. She was born 31 October 1904 in Manchester, a daughter of Edward and Anna Simmons Conner. Her survivors are one son, Norman Kebschof Poughkeepsie, NY; four sisters, Nora Jean Gee of Florissant, MO.; Marion Conner and Alice Mae Meyer of Ferguson, MO. And Edna Lee Leive of Jennings, MO. And two grandchildren.
KEBSCH. 25 April 1977: the funeral of Charles Walter Kebsch, 78, of 611 W. Main, Grafton will be held at 11 am on April 26 at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Grafton with the Rev. Robert Patterson officiating. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Park. He died at 10:50 pm on 22 April at Jersey Community Hospital. Kebsch was a retired captain from the St. Louis fire department and a World War II veteran. He and his wife, the former Clara Conners, had resided in Grafton for16 years since his retirement in 1961. Kebsch was a member of the Grafton Masonic Lodge and former commander of Whalen Hill Post American Legion in Grafton and held the office of chaplain at the time of his death. He is survived by his widow; one son, Norman W. Kebsch of Poughkeepsie, NY; two grandchildren. Friends may call at the funeral home in Grafton after 4 pm Monday. Masonic services will be held at the services Tuesday. American Legion rites will be conducted at the cemetery.
KEEFE. 1 May 1975: the funeral of Mrs. Marilyn (Major) Keefe, 51, of Ladue, MO, formerly of Jerseyville, will be held this morning, 1 May at 10 o’clock at the Bopp Chapel in Kirkwood with the Rev. C. Clark Leonard officiating. Her death occurred on 29 April at St. John’s Mercy hospital, St. Louis county, following an extended illness. Interment will be in St. Francis Xavier cemetery here. She was born in Alton on 11 November 1923, a daughter of the late Lawrence and Alma Miller Major. She is survived by her husband, Jack; one son, Jackie; one brother, A. R. Major of Jerseyville; an aunt, Mrs. Mary Lanham of Jerseyville and uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. William S. Miller of Calimese, Calif., formerly of Jerseyville, at whose homes she had resided while in grade and high school. She was a graduate of Jersey township high school.
KEEHNER. 1921: funeral of Arch Keehner: the body of Arch Keehner, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. John Keehner of this city who died while in the service of his country in France, arrived on the 12:30 C & A train from St. Louis Saturday noon, under military escort. The body arrived in St. Louis over the Pennsylvania from Brooklyn, Friday evening, and under the army orders, was to be brought to Jerseyville on train 14 of the Jacksonville division of the C.&A., so arrived on that train Sat. Afternoon. Funeral services were held at 3 pm from the Presbyterian church, the pastor, Rev. H. S. Farrill officiating and the interment was in Oak Grove mausoleum. Worthey Post No 492 of the American Legion held short services at the mausoleum, burying their deceased comrade with military honors. The pallbearers were Harold Holland, William Wagner, Loran Stanly, T.B. Simmons of Manchester, Roy Redlich, Victor Springman, and Gilbert Pritchett. T.B. Simmons of Manchester was with Arch Keehner when he died, having been in charge of the military hospital at that time. Floyd Archibald Keehner, hero of the world war, who was 26 years of age at the time of his death, was a member of headquarters company of the Three Hundred and Thirty-fifth Infantry, Eighty-fourth Division. He entered the service from Jerseyville in June 1918, went to Bradley Polytechnic Institute at Peoria, and sent overseas the middle of September, having been assigned to signal corps work. His death occurred after an illness of meningitis, on the 19th of October 1918, in a hospital near the village of Montignac in Dordogne, France. It had been thought that influenza was the cause of the death, but papers received Saturday with the coming of the body, described the illness as meningitis. Private Eckhard of Jefferson Barracks accompanied the body to Jerseyville. Floyd Archibald Keehner was a graduate of the Jerseyville high school, and of the University of Illinois, and before he entered the service, was an engineer in the employ of the Illinois State Highway Commission. He is one of Illinois’ soldier dead for whom a memorial column will be erected in the new memorial stadium at the University of Illinois. Besides his parents, he leaves a sister, Miss Ada Keehner of this city and a brother, Clarence Keehner of Chicago, and to the family the deep sympathy of the entire community is extended. Additional obituary: (Picture of deceased appears at top of article.) body of Arch Keehner to be sent home from France; Jerseyville war hero expected at Brooklyn about December 10th. – Mr. and Mrs. John Keehner received a telegram from the government, Saturday, announcing that the body of their son, Archibald Keehner, is being returned to the United States from France and is expected at Brooklyn about December 10th. Further information will be sent upon the arrival of the body, which will be sent to Jerseyville for interment. Arch Keehner is one of the Jerseyville boys heroes of the world war, who gave his life in the service of his country. He went overseas in September of 1918, spent about a week in England, and had been in France about two weeks when he became ill of influenza and passed away in one of the base hospitals. He was 26 years of age at the time of his death. Arch Keehner was well known in Jerseyville and Jersey county. He was a graduate of the Jerseyville high school and of the University of Illinois, and before he entered his country’s service, was in the employ of the State Highway Commission as an engineer. Besides his parents, he leaves one brother, Clarence Keehner now of Chicago, and one sister, Miss Adah Keehner of Jerseyville. He is one of the Illinois soldiers to whom a memorial column in the new stadium at the University of Illinois will be dedicated. Additional news item: Jersey County Democrat 14 November 1918: Mrs. Edgar Houze received a letter from her son, Fred Houze, telling of the death of Arch Keehner, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Keehner who had died in hospital in France. Arch Keehner went overseas early in September as member of the 84 Division. He went to Bradley Polytechnic Institute last July with contingent from Jersey county for special training as an electrician. From there he was sent to Camp Sherman and from there he was assigned to Headquarters Co. of the 84th division. He leaves his parents, one sister, Miss Ada, and one brother, Second Lt. Clarence Keehner, now at the artillery school at Camp Taylor, KY.
KEEHNER. 22 September 1986, Jerseyville – Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 pm today at Gubser Funeral Home for Marie Keehner, 87, who was a resident of St. Paul’s home in Belleville since 1980, where she died at 3:20 am Saturday 20 September 1986, following a lengthy illness. She was born in Alton, a daughter of the late Don and Stella (Harmon) Beach. Her husband, Carl Keehner preceded her in death on 12 December 1978. They were married on 5 July 1922. Surviving are a son, Jim D. Keehner of Belleville; and three granddaughters. Services were conducted by the Rev. V. Clay Noah, Jr. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery at Jerseyville. The memorial designation is to the first Baptist church of Jerseyville, of which she was a member.
KEEHNER. 9 December 1986: Clarence b. Keehner, 90, of Godfrey, died at 12:05 pm Monday, 8 December 1986 at Saint Anthonys hospital in Alton. Keehner owned and operated the Stop and Shop Markets in Alton from 1921-1957. He then became an investment broker with Fusz Schmelzle & Co., served as vice president of the company, and retired in 1975. The World War I veteran was born in Jerseyville, son of the late John and Sara (Daum) Keehner. On 4 September 1922, in Buffalo, NY he married the former Gertrude L. Bowen and she survives. Also surviving are a son, Ronald A. Keehner of Houston, Texas; two granddaughters; and a sister, Ada J. Keehner of Jerseyville. Visitation will be from 3 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm Wednesday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Franklin Masonic Lodge No. 25 AF & AM will conduct rites at 7:30 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 pm Thursday at the funeral home by Rev. Ross Doyel. Burial will be at Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. The Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children has been designated for memorials.
KEEHNER. 16 January 1978: Services for Mrs. Olive Nott Keehner, 96, will be held at 2 pm 17 January at Gubser Funeral Home with the Rev. Everett Chambers officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Her death occurred at 2:20 pm on 14 January at Garnets Chateau. She was born 28 July 1881 in Kansas, a daughter of Samuel B. and Ida Dodson Nott. Her husband, Louis C. Keehner, died 15 February 1958. She is survived by a son, Paul F. Keehner Sr. of Paris, one grandson, Paul F. Keehner, Jr. of Homer and a great grandchild. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 pm and 7 to 9 pm Monday at Gubsers funeral home.

Leaves husband; three daughters, Mrs. Anna Beaty, Miss Louise Keehner, and Mrs. Lee Nail and three sons, Carl, Lawrence of Jerseyville, Edward Keehner of Rolling, Wyo. Mrs. James Miller of Lincoln, IL is a sister. She was born in Germany and came to Ill. With parents when small. Funeral from Baptist church. Rev. A. B. Carson. Burial in Oak Grove. Additional obituary: Jerseyville Republican 24 June 1926: Mrs. Margaret Ann Keehner died 13 June 1926 at home on West Spruce St. 68 years old. Born 17 May 1858, oldest daughter of Rudolph and Sylvia Bohrman and lived nearly all life in Greene and Jersey Counties. Married September 1878 to George F. Keehner. Two daughters and seven sons. Three sons preceded her in death. Leaves husband, daughters, Mrs. Anna Beaty, Mrs. Edith Nail; sons, Louis, Lawrence and Carl of Jerseyville and Edward of Parco, Wyo. One sister, Mrs. James Miller of Lincoln, Illinois. Funeral from Baptist church. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery.
KEEHNER. 14 December 1978: services for Carl L. Keehner, 84, of Jerseyville were held at 2 pm Thursday at the Gubser Funeral Home with the Rev. Willard Foote, interim pastor of the First Baptist church, officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He was found dead at 7 am 12 December at his home on Pearl Street. Keehner retired 1 November 1963 after 18 years service for the Illinois Department of Conservation, Division of Law Enforcement. Prior to that he was bulk agent in Jersey county for the Sinclair Refining Oil Co. of Chicago for 16 years, in charge of nine counties. Born in Greene county, 4 April 1894, he was a son of George and Margaret Bohrman Keehner. He is survived by his wife, the former Marie Beach whom he married 5 July 1922; one son, Jim D. Keehner, a Belleville attorney; three granddaughters; and one sister, Mrs. Edith Nail of Jerseyville. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and six brothers. KEEHNER. 28 October 1965: Funeral services for Lawrence B. Keehner, retired Jersey county farmer, were held Saturday afternoon at two o’clock at the Gubser Funeral Home. Rev. Mode Powell, pastor of the first Methodist church, officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation hours were at the funeral home. The death of Mr. Keehner occurred Thursday morning, 21 October at 5:05 o’clock at Garnets nursing home where he had been residing a few weeks. He had been in ill health for eight years. Mr. Keehner was a son of the late George and Margaret Bohrman Keehner and was born in Greene county on 23 November 1891. His age at the time of death was seventy-three years, ten months and twenty-eight days. Mr. Keehner engaged in farming in Jersey county all of his life until eight years ago when he retired because of ill health and with his wife moved to Jerseyville to reside. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Ruth Keehner, one daughter, Mrs. Ralph Lasher, one brother, Carl Keehner, and one sister, Mrs. Lee Nail, all of Jerseyville, and one grandson, Don Lasher of Carbondale.
KEEHNER. 20 February 1958: L. C. Keehner died Saturday at home here: Louis G. Keehner, well-known retired carpenter, died Saturday evening 15 February at eight o’clock at his home, 300 Harrison, Jerseyville. He had been ill for some time. Friends called at the Gubser Funeral Home. Final rites were held at the funeral home Tues. afternoon, 18 February at two o’clock. Rev. Carl C. Morman, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. The decedent was a son of the late George F., and Margaret Bohrman Keehner and was born in Greene county on 18 April 1881. His age at the time of death was seventy-six years, nine months and twenty-seven days. Mr. Keehner had been a resident of Jerseyville for thirty-eight years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ollie Nott Keehner, one son, Paul Keehner of Paris, Ill., two brothers, Carl and Lawrence Keehner, and one sister, Mrs. Lee Nail, all of Jerseyville and one grandson.
KEEHNER. Jersey. Republican 2 December 1926: George F. Keehner born 26 September 1956, 70 years old. Entire life spent in Jersey and Greene counties Margaret Ann Bohrman 5 September 1878. She died 5 months ago. Seven sons and two daughters: Mrs. Anna Beaty, Louis, Lawrence, Carl Keehner, Mrs. Edith Nail of Jersey Co.; Edward Keehner of Parco, Wyo; George, Frank and Frederick preceded their father in death. Seven grandchildren; three brothers; John of Jerseyville, Gottlieb of Hardin, Charles of Jacksonville; one sister, Mrs. Carrie Pinkerton of Texlina, Texas. Died at home of son, Louis. He was good farmer, man of good judgment, industry and frugality. First Baptist church of Jerseyville.
KEEHNER. 6 April 1979: The funeral of Mrs. Ruth G. Keehner, 84, of 514 Hiview, Jerseyville was held Sunday afternoon at Gubser Funeral Home with the Rev. R. E. George officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. She died at 6:30 pm 25 May at Garnets Chateau. Her husband, Lawrence B. Keehner, died in 1965. Born 16 May 1895 in Fidelity, she was the daughter of Hoit S. and Anna Burley Cornelius. Mrs. Keehner was a member of the First Methodist church. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Melba Lasher of Jerseyville; one grandson, Don Lasher, Dallas, Tex; two great granddaughters; two sisters, Mrs. Harriet Teetzel and Mrs Jessie Kelley of Oakview, Calif. Three brothers and three sisters preceded her in death. The First Methodist church has been designated as a memorial.
KEELEY. 1954: Funeral rites held Sunday for Chas. T. Keeley: Charles Thaddeus Keeley, retired teacher, farmer and civic leader, died Friday morning, 10 December at 12:40 o’clock. He had been in failing health for some time. Mr. Keeley was a son of the late Daniel and Elizabeth Seago Keeley and was born near Rockbridge on 27 September 1866. His age at the time of death was eighty-eight years, two months and thirteen days. He was graduated from the Carrollton high school in 1887 and for thirteen years was engaged in the teaching profession in Greene and Jersey counties. He lived on the same place in the Bethany vicinity for fifty years where he engaged in farming. He moved a few years ago with his daughter, Mrs. Wilma K. Beach, to their home on Barr Avenue. Mr. Keeley was for many years superintendent of the Sunday school of the Bethany Baptist church and was always active in the work of the church. The octogenarian was a member of King Solomon Lodge, A.F. & A. M. of Kane for more than fifty years and was a past worshipful master of the Lodge. He received his 50 year pin in 1950. In addition to his daughter, Mrs. Beach, with whom he made his home, the aged man is survived by one grandson, Harold Stuart beach, of Chicago, one sister, Mrs. Nettie Carrico, and a half brother, Edward Mourning, both of Alton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Edy Ellen Keeley. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers’ funeral home in Jerseyville. Final rites were held Sunday afternoon, 12 December at two o’clock at the Bethany Baptist church of which he was a member. Rev. Frank Schwab officiated at the services and burial was in Lax cemetery. Masonic rites were conducted by the members of King Solomon Lodge of Kane. Pallbearers were all past masters of the Lodge.
KEENEY. Fieldon – Roscoe Junior keeney, 63, died unexpectedly at 11:38 am Tuesday 30 April 1991 at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. He retired in 1987 as a carpenter from Alton Local 377, after 32 years of service. Born in Alton on 7 December 1927, he was a son of the late D. Roscoe and Gretchen (Barnett) Keeney. He and the former Marianne Tinsley were married on 9 December 1950 at Davenport, Iowa. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Cindy Mckinney of South Roxana, and Shelia Hermandez of Colorado Springs, Colo.; five Sons, Barry Keeney of Alton, twins Bruce and Michael Keeney, both of Bethalto, Russell Keeney of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Craig Keeney of Fieldon; nine grandchildren; three sisters, Louise Ehr of Monrovia, Calif., Arlene Moore of Bethalto and Genon Mayfield of Glendale, Ariz.; and a brother, Leroy Keeney of Bethalto. Visitation is from 4 to 8 pm Thursday at Jacoby-Schroeder funeral home in Jerseyville, where services are at 10 am Friday. Burial is in White Hall city cemetery. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association.
KEIPER. 1942: Mrs. Elizabeth Keiper of Eldred, 88, died Monday morning in a Jacksonville hospital where she had been a patient for about a month. She had been ill for several years. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at Mehl Funeral Home. Rev. Lehenbauer of Lutheran congregation officiating. Interment was made in the mausoleum in the Carrollton cemetery. Mrs. Keiper was born in Germany 22 January 1854. After her marriage to John Keiper, she lived on a farm in the Eldred vicinity. For a number of years she had been a resident of Eldred. Mr. Keiper died sixteen years ago. A nephew, Otto Goode of Eldred, grew up in her home. She leaves one sister, Mrs. Christina Konzelman of this city and one brother, William Meeiler of Alberta Canada.
KEITH. Jerseyville Republican, October 1911: Sarah R. Keith was born in St. Louis 16 June 1845. Moved to Jerseyville. Baptist church. Active in church work especially missionary work.
KEITH. Jerseyville Republican, 11 January 1904: Sarah A. Keith, daughter of George and Sarah Gordon, was born near Chillicothe, Ohio, 15 February 1819. She was the seventh in a family of eight children, the youngest of whom, Mrs. Frances Buffington, of Litchfield, alone survives. On 8 August 1844, she was married to William Keith, at Edwardsville, Illinois. The first few years of married life were spent in St. Louis, then in Grafton, Illinois. In 1851, the little family removed to Jerseyville, settling in the house which has been the family home ever since. In April, 1890, occurred the death of her husband. In December 1897, Mrs. Keith slipped upon the ice, sustaining a fracture of the hip, which made her a sufferer for the remaining years of her life. In early childhood she united with the Baptist church, and her Christian hope was steadfast to the end. On 8 January 1904, the summons came in an hour that she, and those who attended her, thought not of, and her spirit took its flight for her heavenly home without the slightest sign of her going. Three daughters and one son survive her. On the 12th inst., her funeral occurred from her home, conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. A. Ford. The interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. KEITH. April 1890: William Keith was born in Fleming county, KY in 1812. 77 years old. Came to Alton 1820, and was there when Lovejoy was murdered. Married Sarah A. Gordon at Edwardsville, Illinois. In 1844. Came to Jersey county in 1848 to Grafton; to Jerseyville in 1851. He was an undertaker; buried 3,500 people in his time. Joined Baptist church in 1857. Rev. Avery, Rev. Tyson, Rev. Leeper. Pallbearers: L. Kirby, J. Darby, R. Gledhill, John Cory, W. Edwards, Elvin Armstrong, Lewis Terrell, James A. Barr, James Calhoun, Nelson Lurton.
KEITH. 26 June 1942: Charles W. Keith dies in Denver: Jerseyville relatives received word Wednesday evening of the death of Charles W. Keith of Denver, Colorado, which occurred at his home there following a two weeks illness. Funeral rites and interment took place in Denver, Friday morning, 26 June at eleven o’clock. Mr. Keith is a former resident of Jerseyville. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Keith of Jerseyville and was born and reared in Jerseyville. His age at the time of his death was eighty-four years. His father was in the undertaking business in Jerseyville for many years. After completing his education at the Jerseyville high school, Keith attended a business college. He later lived in Kansas. For many years he has resided in Denver where he conducted an implement business until his retirement. The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Della Ware Keith, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George W. Ware of Jerseyville, and one daughter, Mrs. William Kirk of Hollywood, Calif. He is a brother-in-law of Frank M. Ware of Jerseyville.
KELLAR. Jersey County Democrat, 27 May 1886: William Kellar was born 12 October 1801 in Rowan county, North Carolina, married to Dorothy Nail on 27 September 1824; moved to Illinois following year and settled in Greene Co. west of Carrollton where he lived two years and moved to his present homestead, where he has ever since resided up to his death. Father of 14 children, of whom 7 are living, four boys and three girls. There has been 54 grandchildren born, thirty of whom are now living, and eleven great grandchildren. He made a profession of religion and united with the M.E. church about the year of 1836. He was a faithful and earnest Christian, a kind and generous husband and father and in all his dealings with his fellow man; was always known to be an honest, upright man ever ready to help the needy. He upheld all that was right and condemned all that was wrong. On the 17th of August last, his devoted wife was suddenly stricken with paralysis and has been ever since been a helpless invalid and was left to mourn his death. Buried from the family residence. KELLER. 24 August 1982: The funeral of Jessie Leainteen Lott Keller, 86, of Dry Prong, LA. Was conducted Thursday morning by brother Frank Cook at Jacoby funeral home. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Her death occurred at 8:30 pm 14 August at the Autumn Leaves nursing home in Winfield, LA. The Calhoun native was born 26 February 1896, a daughter of the late William and Ella Mae Ketchum Sevier. Her survivors are her husband, Charles Keller; four sons, William Lott of Crowley, Texas, Samuel Lott of Jerseyville, Fred Lott, Burlington, Iowa and Clyde Lott, Seattle , Washington; six daughters, Harriet Severns of Lynn Center, Mellie Degen of Oakville, Iowa, Littie Foster of Montesano, Wash., Carol Kobs, Burlington, Iowa, Pauline Daiker, Grafton, and Frances Scoggins of Livingston. Numerous grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren; one brother, Gene Sevier of Aberdeen, Wash., and a Sister, Sylvia Kocher of Alton. Her first husband, Samuel Lott died in 1957; she was also preceded in death by three daughters and a sister.
KELLER. 11 April 1974: Funeral mass for Mrs. Marguerite Frances (Mom) Keller, 67, of Grafton was celebrated Saturday morning, 6 April at St. Patrick’s church in Grafton with the Rev. Patrick Morrow celebrant. She died on 3 April at Jersey Community Hospital. Interment was in Scenic Hill cemetery. She was born 4 June 1906 in Louisiana, MO, a daughter of John and Sarah Campbell Johnson. She operated Keller’s Steak House near Grafton. Mrs. Keller was a member of the Altar Society of St. Patrick’s church, American Legion auxiliary, Grafton and VFW auxiliary. She is survived by two sons, Charles Patrick of Liberty, MO, and John Larry of Jerseyville; five daughters, Mrs. Glenn (Betty) Goodwin, Mrs. William (Mary B.) Desherlia and Mrs. Jerome (Theresa) Foval of Grafton; Mrs. Kenneth (Margaret) Whaley and Mrs. Charles (Sally) Holder of Godfrey; 16 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren. Her husband, Charles E. Keller, parents, two brothers, two sons, and three sisters preceded her in death. Visitation was held at Jacoby funeral home in Grafton where the rosary was recited Friday evening.
KELLER. Medora Messenger 1929: End comes peacefully to pioneer pedagogue famous for his mental attainments: Funeral services for Stroud V. Keller, pioneer schoolmaster of Medora and the village’s most picturesque citizen, were held from the residence on Elm Street Monday afternoon, with Rev. Geo. M. Hayes, pastor of Methodist Episcopal church at Curran, Ill. Officiating, assisted by Rev. J. F. Phillips, pastor of the Medora Baptist church. The burial was in the Medora cemetery. A quartette composed of Mrs. I.E. Day, Mrs. Roy Robings, I.E. Day and A. L. Eastham sang hymns which were favorites of the deceased. Mr. Hayes, who was a close personal friend of Mr. Keller during the minister’s residence in Medora a few years ago, spoke a fitting eulogy to the memory of the pioneer teacher. At the grave a short address was given by Rev. William M. Rhoads of Upper Alton, a nephew of the deceased. The pallbearers were Richard and John T. Ryan, J.W. Searles, R.W. Metcalfe, Hardin Cain and E.N. Jennings. Among the beautiful floral offerings was a large bouquet from former pupils of Mr. Keller’s school at Fidelity, the following ladies: Mesdames Chas. A. Rice, Will Birkenmayer, T.B. Aydelott, Joseph O’neil, James Bringhurst and A.F. Ely. (Taught first school in Medora): the death of Mr. Keller occurred Saturday at 1:30 pm while he was seated in his chair. The end came from a heart attack incident to senility and was not unexpected, since he had been suffering for some months from the affliction, together with dropsy. He retained his keen mental powers up to the last. If Mr. Keller had lived until 29 March he would have been 88 years old. Mr. Keller taught the first school in Rhoads’ Point, now Medora, in 1854 in a log house. He also taught successive terms in Summerville, Fidelity and in the neighborhood of Chesterfield, returning to Medora in 1878 to be principal of the first more Modern school. His last teaching was at Hill Grove school, southeast of Medora, in the 80’s. He taught at Fidelity in the early 60’s. His death removes probably the last surviving pedagogue of the old school in central Illinois. Hundreds of his former pupils still live, many of them in Medora and the vicinity. They are men and women whose brains he planted with the rudiments of an education which later in life reached full fruitation. These pupils remember him as a man of extraordinary ability as a teacher, kind but firm and a master disciplinarian. He was a believer in the use of the rod, but he was credited with a proper and human judgment in such administrations. Recalling his school days as a pupil of Mr. Keller, whom he referred to as the “village dominie,” Lyman L. Palmer of Gainesville, Fla., a well-known newspaper man, in reminiscences published by the messenger, wrote: “I am sure there was never a district school teacher in Macoupin county, not in the whole state of Illinois, who could touch the hem of his blue jeans…..parts missing….yet he was an independent thinker. He was a constant student of the bible, from which he could quote at will. The close of his well-spent life found him buoyantly reaching out for the new experience–the transformation to still greater heights in the spiritual and mental realms of living. He was married on 11 May 1854 to Sarah A. Rhoads, who died on 10 March 1917. Eight children were born to this union, four of whom preceded the parents in death. KELLER. 16 February 1939: Josephine Keller, 86 years old, dominant figure in the business life of Elsah for 63 years, died at St. Anthony’s infirmary.
KELLER. Jerseyville Republican, 14 February 1918: Cosmos Keller, born near Elsah 28 September 1860, was an office holder 16 years in which time he was sheriff twice and treasurer one term. In 1888 he married Mary Jane Knapp. Three children, one of whom died while young. Miss Frederica teaches school in Jerseyville and Miss Margaret is employed as bookkeeper at Brammeier’s store which was owned by Mr. Keller until ill health caused him to give it up. Burial in St. Francis cemetery. He had been prominent in politics and business in Jersey county for many years. He was sheriff of Jersey county in 1890, county treasurer in 1894, sheriff in 1898. KELLER. Jerseyville Republican, April, 1896: The funeral of Louis Keller, a prominent citizen of Elsah, and an uncle of county treasurer, Cosmos Keller, took place Monday. Mr. Keller was 69 years old and leaves a wife and four children, three daughters and one son, Ed. Keller, engaged in business at Elsah. The funeral was conducted by Full Moon Lodge, A.F.&A., of Grafton, and very largely attended. Deceased was also a member of the IOOF and the GAR Resolutions: of Elsah Lodge, No 269, IOOF on the death of Louis Keller. Whereas: he was long a faithful and honored member of this Lodge, a good citizen, and honest, upright man, a kind husband and an indulgent father. Therefore, be it resolved: that we extend to the widow and family of our deceased brother our sincere sympathy and fraternal condolence in their bereavement, assuring them that we will ever hold the memory of their loved dead in kindly remembrance. Resolved: that a copy of resolutions be forwarded to family of our deceased brother, and that the same be spread on the minutes, and that the charter of this Lodge be draped in mourning for 30 days. KELLER. Undated: Elsah – died after short illness, Cosmos Keller, Sr. He was a native of Alsace, Gamgsheim, France, and was born 11 March 1832. He was a cooper by trade, but has been engaged in saloon business for number of years. In 1856 he married Dorthea Beherus; she died in January 1877. In July of same year he married Mrs. Bertha Feuerhard. Father of three children by first wife, two of whom are living; Cosmos, aged 20 years and Emma, aged 16 years. Funeral conducted by IOOF and very largely attended by various Lodges from Alton, Grafton, Jerseyville, Delhi and Otterville.
KELLER. 4 August 1977: The funeral of Mrs. Mina M. Keller, 79, of Grafton will be held at 10:30 am Friday, 5 August at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Grafton with the Rev. Robert Broeder of Jerseyville officiating. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Park. She died at 10:15 am on 2 August at Jerseyville care center. She was born in Edwardsville on 14 March 1898, a daughter of Otto and Marie Mehmken. Mrs. Keller was a member of Grafton American Legion auxiliary and the auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Edwardsville. She is survived by her husband, Udell S. Keller; one son, Earl U. KELLEY. 3 July 1981: Services were held Monday at Gent Funeral Home for Thomas W. Kelley, 62, of 1005 Logan, Alton. His death occurred at 1:15 am 3 July at John Cochran veterans hospital , St. Louis, following a four month illness. He was born in Delhi, the son of the late Timothy and Bridget Welsh Kelley. The World War II army veteran retired as a laborer this year due to ill health. He is survived by a sister, Gertrude Baron of Alton, and two brothers, Joseph Kelley and Francis Muhn, of Overland, MO. Burial was in St. Patrick’s cemetery.
KELLEY. 1 January 1971: July injuries fatal to Ronald L. Kelley: Ronald L. Kelley of Route 4, Jerseyville, critically injured by an automobile on the night of last July 3, died at two o’clock Thursday morning, 31 December at St. Luke hospital in St. Louis. Mr. Kelley was the husband of Patsy Ann Scott Kelley, whose mother, Mrs. Steve (Charlotte) Scott and sister, Mrs. Robert (Sharon) Scott Grady, were killed in a car truck-accident five miles northwest of Jerseyville on 16 Sep. Funeral services for Mr. Kelley were held at two o’clock on Saturday at Jacoby Brothers funeral home with Rev. Thurman Strange officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr. Kelley was born in Godfrey, a son of Harry Kelley of Jerseyville and Helen Robinson Kelley. His age at the time of death was twenty-two years, two months, and twenty-eight days. Surviving him in addition to his wife are a daughter, Kimberly; his father; two Brothers, Harry Kelly, Jr. of Zephyrhills, Florida, and Terry Kelly of Jerseyville; and four sisters, Mrs. Phyliss Abbott and Mrs. Geraldean Farris of Jerseyville, Harriet Kelley of Medora, and Mrs. Mary Huff of Piasa. The accident in which Kelley was hurt occurred on highway 67, south of the Clark bridge, as he, along with two brothers-in-law, Steve, Jr. and Dennis Scott, were returning to their car on the upper highway in the area of the old Gambill barn. According to reports at that time, Kelley had stepped onto the highway when he was struck by an automobile driven by Alice Gould of Wayne, Michigan. The injured man was moved to St. Luke hospital in St. Louis where he underwent major surgery for major head and stomach wounds. KELLEY. 2 March 1978: Wilson Eugene Kelley, 42, died at 12:30 am on 25 February in Clovis, NM where he resided. He was born 17 June 1935 in Greene county, a son of Raymond Eugene and Pearl Margaret Kelley and was a mechanic. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict. He is survived by his wife, Carol Kelley; two step-daughters, Cynthia Mcgough of Clovis, NM, and Carla Shaw of Kane; two sons, Kenneth E. Kelley and Keith Kelley and a daughter, Kimberly Kelley, all of Clovis, MN; two grandchildren; a brother, Harold Kelley of Gillespie; one sister, Marilyn Perrine of Shipman and his mother, Pearl Kelley of Carlinville. Services were held at 1:30 pm Thursday at Jacoby Brothers funeral home with the Rev. R. E. George officiating burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Services at the grave were conducted by Worthey Post American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

KELLEY. Undated: Roy L. Kelley of Alton died at 1:15 am on 16 May at the Eldercare nursing home in Alton. He was born in Newbern 24 September 1900, a son of John and Dora Worthey Kelley. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Dora Dawdy of Dow; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mrs. Lawrence Angel. Services will be held at the Gubser Funeral Home at 2 pm on 18 May with the Rev. Thomas Spain of Assembly of God church of Newbern officiating. Burial will be in Newbern cemetery. KELLEY. Not dated: Mrs. Bridget Kelley, wife of Timothy Kelley of near Jerseyville, died on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock at St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton. She was aged 38 years, 7 months and 27 days. The deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. Welsh of Godfrey and most of her life had been spent there until her marriage at Brighton about nine years ago, when she came to Jerseyville to live. Surviving Mrs. Kelley are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. R. Welsh of Godfrey; two sisters, Mrs. E.E. Muhm of St. Louis and Mrs. Ray Sears of Alton; and three brothers, Richard, Martin and John J. Welsh of near Brighton. Funeral services were held from Jennings Bros. Undertaking Parlors to St. Francis Xavier’s church on Wednesday morning at 9:30 o’clock. Requiem high mass was celebrated with Rev. Father J. J. Clancy as celebrant. Interment was in St. Francis Xavier’s cemetery.
KELLEY. Jerseyville – Harry Leroy Kelley, 70, died at 9:30 am Sunday, 20 July 1986, at Saint Anthonys hospital in Alton. The son of the late Zeanen and Luvena (Holmes) Kelley, he had been a maintenance operator at Principia college in Elsah. He was married to the former Helen Louise Robinson and then the former Marie Shaw. Both preceded him in death. Surviving are two sons, Harry Kelley, Jr. of Jerseyville and Terry Kelley of Alton; four Daughters, Harriet Holtzclaw of Bixby, MO, Mary Huff of Medora, Geraldine Farris of Otterville and Phyllis Abbott of Jerseyville; 23 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and three sisters, Ruth Ruebling of Wood River, Margaret King of Godfrey and Lucille Lynch of Viril Beach, Florida. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 pm Tuesday at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville, where services will be held at 2 pm Wednesday with the Rev. Ron Woodrum officiating. Burial will be at Providence cemetery in Carrollton.
KELLEY. J. Kelley Died Sunday at Menard. Funeral Services For Former Aged Resident Of Dow Held This Week at Chester. James F. Kelley, seventy-eight year old resident of Dow who was sentenced April 18 to imprisonment in the penitentiary for fourteen years for the murder of Shirley K. Thompson of Dow, died on Sunday evening, May 26, at six oclock at the Menard Penitentiary at Chester where he had been taken by officials of Jersey County on May 1. Following the shooting of Thompson on the morning of December 19, 1945, Kelley barricaded himself in his home in Dow and Jersey County and State Highway officials had to resort to the use of tear gas to effect the arrest of the aged man. Kelley, when apprehended, was found to be suffering from a minor scalp wound and he was taken to the Memorial Hospital in Alton where he remained for treatment for a few days before being transferred to the local jail. Mr. Kelley had been in failing health since his arrest. Surviving the aged man are two sons, James Kelley of California and Walter Kelley of Alton, two daughters, Mrs. Nettie Federle of Dow and Mrs. Rosetta Scanton of East Alton. He also leaves a brother, Zenan Kelley of Jersey County. Funeral services and burial were at Chester. Jersey County Democrat-News, May 31, 1946.

KELLY. Jersey County Democrat 3 July 1890: Elsah – On Wednesday, the 25th in St., Mr. Bernard F. Kelly, who has for a long time been a patient sufferer was taken home. He left a wife and ten children, together with many warm personal friends to mourn their loss. He was buried at St. Michael cemetery on Thurs., the 26th, father marks officiating. The pall bearers were: J. M. Segraves, M. Hamer, Mckinley Ward, Louis Bunger, Green Segraves and P. Glassbrenner. Mr. Kelley’s death is a sad loss to this township, he had frequently been called upon to fill important positions in all of which he was praised.

KELSEY. Jerseyville Republican, 20 February 1919: James R. Kelsey of Brighton committed suicide in his room at the Lincoln hotel, Charleston, W. Va., 8 feb. John H. Kelsey, his brother of James brought the body to Brighton Tuesday. Funeral services conducted. 42 years old. Since last summer he had been employed by the government at Newport News, Va. Leaves widow, three children and sister.
KEMPER. Republican examiner, 8 September 1882: died at his home in Kemper, W. H. H. Kemper, age 68 years. Born in Kentucky and came to Carrollton in 1844. In 1853 he bought the farm where he afterwards laid out the town of Kemper and has lived there ever since. Member of Fidelity Lodge No. 152, A.F. & A. M. Funeral by Rev. Philips of Piasa. KENNEDY. Jersey County News, Thurs, 10 March 1927: Mrs. Resetta Kennedy, wife of Strother Kennedy, died at her home on east spruce Street in this city on Wednesday afternoon at 1:48 o’clock. The deceased was aged 62 years, 1 month and 8 days. She had been in failing health for many years. Mrs. Kennedy was born in Greene county, the daughter of Smith and Sarah Jane Kennedy. She is survived by her husband, two sons, Chas Kennedy of this city and Cecil Kennedy of Milwaukee, Wis., and one daughter, Mrs. Murril Buillings of Salem, Illinois. She also leaves one grandchild, Miss vena Kennedy of memphis, tenn. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon, 12 March at 2:00 o’clock from Jacoby Brothers funeral chapel, with Rev. A.B. Carson and Rev. W. S. Neely of Auburn, Ill., officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove mausoleum.

April 1950: Mrs. Edith Bothwell Kennedy, who for the past five years has made her home with Mrs. Lillie Fitzpatrick on South State Street, died at the Fitzpatrick home Wednesday morning, 12 April at five thirty o’clock. Mrs. Kennedy was a daughter of the late Samuel and Mary J. Armstrong Bothwell and was born in Perth, Ontario, 21 February 1864. Her age at the time of death was eighty-six years, one month and twenty-one days. Her husband, J. N. Kennedy, preceded her in death. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Matilda Colean of Jerseyville. Private funeral services will be held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home Friday 14 Apr, at eleven o’clock am., the Rev. John T. Lillard officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery.
KENNEDY. Jerseyville Republican, 24 November 1904: Mrs. Elizabeth Kennedy, of Otterville, died Friday 18 Nov., aged 79 years, after an illness of many months. The funeral took place at the Baptist church, Rev. Aaron Dodson conducting the services. Interment in Noble cemetery. Mrs. Kennedy was formerly Miss Elizabeth Davis and was born at Summit, Virginia, 22 September 1825. Moved with her parents to Kentucky, later to Missouri and a few years later to Bond Co., Illinois. At this place she was married to Isaac Kennedy in 1849. They lived there only a few years, moving then to Jersey Co., Ill., in 1854. Two sons were born to this union: Jesse of Alton, and Newton of Frankford, MO. She professed religion, later was baptized by Aaron Dodson and united with the Baptist church of Mt. Zion. She remained a member of that church until 1871 when she united with the Otterville Baptist church and was a faithful member until her death.

No dates: Rites in Alton for native of jersey: Funeral rites were held Saturday afternoon, 15 March at the Tabernacle Baptist church in Alton for Mrs. Nettie Elizabeth Kenney, 70, a native of Jerseyville, whose death occurred Wednesday 12 March at her home in Alton. Mrs. Kenney was the widow of David Kenney. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Harry Halliburton, Mrs. Amos Logan and Miss Gertrude Kenney of Alton.

KEOWN. 11 October 1979: Eva B. Keown, 83, died at 4:45 pm 10 October at Garnets Chateau where she had resided since march. She was born in Greene county 13 November 1895, a daughter of the late Marion and Elizabeth Birch Keown and was a retired domestic worker. Her only survivors are nieces and nephews. Visitation from 6 to 9 pm Friday at Jacoby Brothers funeral home where the funeral will be conducted at 1:30, 13 October by the Rev. V. Clay Noah, Jr. Cremation will follow the services.

KESLER. Jerseyville Republican 3 October 1901: Jacob Kesler, husband of Mrs. Rebecca Kesler (nee Hansel) died 25 Sep. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio 10 September 1841. Married 18 January 1872 at St. Charles, MO. They came to Elsah to live. Four children, all died in infancy. Mr. Kesler was in war, member of Merchant’s Regiment of St. Louis, 32 MO Inf Vol 3rd Brigade, 1st Div., 16th Army Corps, Army of Tenn. He was in the following battles, sieges and captures: Yellow Bayou, Pleasant Hill, Bayou, Boef, Henderson Hill, Fort Durussy, Clautlerville, Meekville Moore’s Plantation, La.; Tapels, Fort Pemberton, Carmago Cross Roads, Lake Chicot, Ark.; Nashville, Tenn.; Missouri Raid, Spanish Fort, Siege of Mobile, Selma, Ala. Singlehanded at the battle of Tupelo, Miss. he captured two commissioned confederate captains. At the battle of Nashville, Tenn., a confederate battle flag, also a stand of colors at the siege of Mobile, Ala. Has filled offices of honor and trust in Elsah, member of Masonic Lodge, K.P. Lodge and GAR.
KESSINGER. 1966: Mrs. Elizabeth Kessinger, 96, widow of Manning Kessinger, former Macoupin and Madison county school administrator, died at 5:50 am today in Blu-Foutain Manor nursing home where she had been a patient since May of 1963. She lived for a number of years at 3119 Godfrey road before entering the nursing home. The former Elizabeth Edwards, she was born at Scottville, 25 October 1870, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Edwards, Sr. Her husband, former principal of Lincoln & Humboldt schools, died in November of 1934, and a daughter, Mrs. Lazelle Harris, an only child died 28 October 1958. A nephew, Howard Edwards of Jacksonville is among survivors. Funeral services will be Thursday at 1 pm in Gent chapel. Entombment will be in Grandview mausoleum, Alton cemetery. He died 7 January at Jersey Community Hospital. Kessler was an electrician at Central Electric in Alton. Born 29 August 1914 in South Dakota, he was a son of Christian and Olive Levi Kessler. He is survived by his wife, the former Irene Krause whom he married 2 March 1935 in Alton; a son, Ronald of Jerseyville; two Daughters, Loretta Hagen of Granite City and Esther Gowin of Jerseyville; one brother, Louis Kessler of Alton; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Visitation from 4 to 9 pm Tuesday at Jacoby Brothers funeral home. The cancer society has been named as a memorial.

KESSLER. 6 April 1967: George John Kessler, a retired farmer living on Route Three, Jerseyville, died at nine-fifty o’clock Saturday morning at the Jersey Community Hospital where he had been admitted earlier in the week for treatment. Rev. H.O. Renken officiated at funeral services held at two o’clock Monday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers funeral home. Burial was in grimes cemetery. Mr. Kessler was born in Jersey county, 25 September 1883, a son of the late George and Margaret Horn Kessler. His survivors are one son, William G. Kessler of Jerseyville; one granddaughter, Mrs. Janet Brangenberg of Kane; and two great grandchildren, Denise and Craig Brangenberg of Kane. He was a member of the Eagles and Elks Lodges in Jerseyville and the Fieldon Lodge, AF&AM.
KETCHUM. 31 July 1942: Mrs. Ketchum, 87, of Kemper dies: Mrs. Eliza Ketchum, 87 year old resident of Kemper, died Wednesday morning 29 July at 8:45 o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Abner Conner, in that village. Mrs. Ketchum had been blind and was an invalid for several years. The aged woman was one of twelve children born to the late Thomas and Mary Ruyle. She was born in Ruyle township on 19 November 1854. She resided in Alton and Kansas for several years but most of her life was spent in Ruyle township. Mrs. Ketchum was the widow of Charles Ketchum. Surviving her are two daughters, Mrs. Conner of Kemper and Mrs. Neva Bowman of Mexico, MO; two sons, Ben Ketchum of Los Angeles, Calif, and Grover Ketchum of Miami, Florida, and one brother, T.B. Ruyle of Jerseyville. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon, 31 July at 2:00 o’clock, at the Conner home and burial will be at Kemper.
KETCHUM. No source noted: Taps sound for Leonard Ketchum: After a year of intense suffering from anemic poisoning, Leoard Ketchum, veteran of the Civil War, died at home three miles north of Medora last Thursday evening. His death had been expected momentarily to occur for several weeks, but his remarkably strong constitution served to stay the final summons. He passed away peacefully, meeting death with the bravery that characterized his four long years of action as a soldier. More than five hundred people attended the funeral Sunday morning of Mrs. Ketchum, who eight months before his death planned all the details thereof. In accordance with his wishes, Horace Warner of Challacombe, a comrade of the deceased, bore a large United States flag at the head of the funeral procession which formed at the Ketchum residence one mile east of Kemper. Immediately after the hearse the solder’s aged saddle mare “Gussie”, driverless was led by D.B. Elliott. The horse wore on its back its master’s army saddle, carbine rifle, saber and scabbard, knapsack and canteen which Mr. Ketchum had used during his service in the Civil War. Funeral services were held in the Kemper Baptist church at 11 o’clock. Rev. O.W. Shields of Virden officiated, assisted by Rev. Henry Dixon of Rockbridge and Rev. Stephen Catt of Jerseyville. Wiley Johnson sang a solo, a favorite of the deceased, which had been requested by Mr. Ketchum before his death. Thirteen old soldiers were in line and attended the services in a body. The pallbearers were T.B. Ruyle, Amos, Wiley and George Johnson, D.B. Elliott and Chris Cluster. The burial was in Delaware cemetery, north of Kemper. (Picture of deceased appears in article). Historical sketch: Another old soldier has answered to the last roll call. Leonard Ketchum, son of Ira and Phebe Ketchum, was born 21 April 1842, and died at his home three miles north of Medora on Thurs, 10 Oct, after an illness of 12 months. He was aged 70 years, 5 months and 19 days. The end came peacefully at 8:30 pm with his companion and children at his bedside. On 14 December 1863, he was married to Jane S. Hayward while home to veteranize. To this union ten children were born, three sons and seven daughters, viz: Louie E., who died 29 June 1911, Lawrence C., Eva J., Lodusky L. who died in infancy, Nellie M., Albert J., who died in infancy, Elizabeth P., Zelma A., Jane S. and Lenie, who died in infancy. He was converted while a soldier and united with the Congregational church at Kemper. He was a veteran of the civil war, serving from 1861 to 1865. He enlisted in the 12th Ill. Cavalry, Co. F of volunteers, serving 4 years,5 months and 17 days. In all his army service he never missed a roll call nor was it ever necessary for him to do a minute’s extra duty. Mr. Ketchum participated in the following battles and skirmishes: Tunstall Station, Va., 4 May 1863; Upperville, Va., 20 June 1863; Gettsburg, Va. 1 July 1863; skirmished at Tunlistown from 6 July to 10, 1863; Skirmished at Chestergap, Va. 20 July 1863; Brandy Station, 1 August 1863; Culpepper Court House, Va., 13 September 1863; where two of his comrades, Poly and Tommy Kemper, were wounded. These are only a few of the engagements in which he took part. He was honorably discharged in February 1866, being at that time orderly Sargeant. He leaves to mourn his death a wife, six children, 13 grandchildren, 5 brothers, one sister, one half brother, besides many other relatives and a host of friends. Leonard Ketchum’s will: the will of the late Leonard Ketchum who died at his home north of Medora 10 oct, has been admitted to probate in Macoupin county court. The instrument is dated 15 April 1911, and is signed by J.P. Roodhouse and L.O. Hayward as witnesses. Mr. Ketchum directs first that after his death all his just debts and funeral expenses be paid. He directs secondly that his wife, Jane S. Ketchum, sell at public sale all his personal property excepting household goods. The proceeds of the sale and all cash and notes he bequeaths to her to hold and to keep forever as her own. Mrs. Ketchum is given full control of all of his real estate and all the proceeds thereof as long as she lives, unless she marries again, in which case he directs that she give up full possession of said real estate to his sons, L.E. Ketchum (now deceased) and L.C. Ketchum, whom he names as executors of the will. He gives the sons as executors full power to sell all of his real estate and he also directs that upon the remarriage or death of his wife, Jane S. Ketchum, that the sons shall sell all of the real estate, dividing the proceeds thereof equally between his sons and daughters, excepting one-half, which he bequeaths to his wife to have as hers forever. In case of the death of any one of his sons or daughters, before having received their part of the above, provision is made that their part be equally divided between their children if they have any children and if no child or children are
KEYES. 21 February 1952: Elmer C. Keyes of Jerseyville died Friday evening, 15 February at 11:10 pm at the memorial hospital in Alton where he had been a patient since 7 February when he suffered a stroke while at his work at the Western Cartridge Company in East Alton. Mr. Keyes was a son of the late Henry J. and Nancy M. Dayton Keyes, and was born in Greene county on 24 February 1887. His age at the time of death was sixty four years, eleven months and twenty-one days. His entire lifetime was spent in Greene county the past thirty-five years. The decedent is survived by two sons, Clifford and Claude Keyes of Jerseyville; one daughter, Mrs Elmer Mott of Dow; one brother, Al Keyes of Roodhouse; two sisters, Miss Lena Keyes of Carrollton and Mrs. Julyia McDonald of Kanakaee; and four grandchildren. Friends called at the Gubser Funeral Home. Services were held at the funeral home Monday afternoon 18 Feb., at two o’clock, with Rev. M. Edwards Breed, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.

KIBLER. 21 September 1967: services for Mrs. Kibler on Tuesday: funeral services were held at the Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville at nine-thirty o’clock Tuesday morning for Mrs. Caltha Perisho Kibler of 102 Andrew St., Jerseyville, with Rev. W. Louis Purcell officiating. Committal rites were in the family plot at the Cummins cemetery at Rose Hill where her grandson, John W. Kibler, Bloomington mortician, was in charge. The death of Mrs. Kibler occurred at nine o’clock Saturday morning at the Blu Fountain Manor near Godfrey where she had been transferred 12 August following hospitalization for correction of a hip fracture. Mrs. Kibler, a daughter of the late Perry D. and Mary McFadden Perisho, was born near Yale, Ill., 15 November 1877, and her death occurred just two months before her ninetieth birthday anniversary. The near nonagenarian came to Jerseyville from Chicago in 1930 to make her home here after her son, C.T. Kibler, was appointed farm adviser in Jersey county. In 1950 she moved to Normal when her son and family took up residence there, returning to Jerseyville in November, 1964 when Mr. and Mrs. C.T. Kibler retired and returned to this city to make their home. She was a member of the First Methodist church in Jerseyville and of the order of Eastern Star in Streator. Surviving Mrs. Kibler in addition to her son in Jerseyville is another Son, Dr. O.B. Kibler of Evanston; four grandchildren, William T. Kibler of Rossville, Georgia, Mrs. R.C. (Joan) Fackler of Littleton, Colorado, Mrs. John (Kay) Lindsay of Glenview, and John W. Kibler of Bloomington; and eight great grandchildren. Her husband, William J. Kibler, to whom she was married 23 September 1897, died 11 March 1907. Preceding her in death in addition to her husband were her parents, four brothers, one sister, one grandson, and one great grandson.
KIEL. Jerseyville – Marie A. Kiel, 88, died at 4:15 pm Thursday 5 September 1991 at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. She was a member of the Jerseyville American Legion auxiliary and Jerseyville Democratic Women’s Club. Born at Golden Eagle on 22 May 1903, she was a daughter of the late Frank X. and Anna (Kamp) Mossman. On 9 November 1920 in Brussels, she married Joseph Kiel. He died 2 August 1973. Surviving are two daughters, Bernadine Chappel of Jerseyville and Geraldine Ferenbach of Godfrey; two grandsons, and a great grandson. Preceding her in death were two sisters, Clara Narup; and six Brothers, Louis, Goerge, Tony, Frank, Clarence and Carl Mossman. Visitation is from 4 to 9 pm Sun. at Jacoby-Schroeder funeral home in Jerseyville, with a rosary recitation at 7 pm. A funeral mass is at 10 am Monday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic church in Jerseyville, with the Rev. William Keikeisen as celebrant. Burial is in St. Francis Xavier cemetery at Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the church, where she was a member, or masses.
KIEL. 20 March 1980: The funeral of Beverly Ann Kiel, 20, of Hardin who resided at the Lincoln Development Center in Lincoln, was conducted Wednesday afternoon at Hanks funeral home in Hardin with the Rev. Roy Bauer officiating. She died 16 March at St. John’s hospital in Springfield. She was born 25 January 1960 in Jerseyville, the daughter of the late Mathais Kiel and Mary Ilene Hazelwonder of Alton. She is survived by her mother and a sister, Holly Plummer of Jerseyville. Burial was in St. Michael’s cemetery.
KIEL. 9 August 1973: Mass of resurrection for Joseph Henry Kiel, 808 West Exchange St., this city, was celebrated at ten o’clock Monday morning at St. Francis Xavier church in Jerseyville by father Terry Shea. Burial followed in St. Francis cemetery. The rosary was recited at four o’clock Sun. afternoon at the Jacoby funeral home where visitation was held. The family designated the St. Francis Xavier church building fund as a memorial. Mr. Kiel, a retired farmer whose health had been impaired for quite sometime, was fatally stricken around noon Thursday while in the yard at his home. A native of Calhoun county, Mr. Kiel, a son of the Late Herman and Angeline Imming Kiel, was born 5 December 1896. He was a veteran of World War I. His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Marie M. Kiel; two daughters, Mrs. Leonard (Geraldine) Ferenbach of Godfrey and Mrs. William (Bernadine) Chappell of Jerseyville; two grandsons, Vernon and Roger Chappell of Jerseyville; two brothers, William Kiel of Brussels and Garrett Kiel of Golden Eagle; and two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Bimslanger of St. Louis and Mrs. Mamie Bopp of Brussels. Mr. Kiel was a member of the Jerseyville Council, Knight of Columbus, World War One Barracks, Senior Citizens Club, the Jersey County Farm Bureau, and Worthey Post, American Legion.
KIELY. Jersey County Democrat, 16 June 1892: Died at her home in Jerseyville, 14 June 1892, Catherine, wife of Richard Kiely. 32 years of age. Funeral from St. Francis church, Rev. Harty. She was oldest child of Peter and Maria Dolan, born in New Orleans, 20 May 1859. After close of war moved to Jerseyville. Married Richard Kiely on 4 May 1880. Six children were born, three of whom, Sarah, Joseph J. and Thomas Emmett, died in infancy. William P., Mary and Francis M. are living. She lived not for the things of this world. The beggar was never turned from her door without a morsel.

KILCRAN. 19 May 1981: Calum W. Kilcran, 54, of Prospect Heights died at 1:30 am 11 May at a Chicago hospital. He was born in Chicago, 11 September 1926, the son of William and Florence Pegue Kilcran and came to Jersey county when he was eight years old, making his home with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Pegue. After graduating from Jersey Comm. High school, he returned to Chicago. He served in the military in the Korean conflict. Kilcran was vice president of the Manufacturers Bank in Chicago prior to his illness. His survivors are his wife, Irene; one sister, Marie Zipprich of Augusta, Kan. He was a nephew of Francis Pegue, Irene Krueger and Lauretta Devening all of the Fieldon area. Burial was 13 May in the Mt. Emblem cemetery in Arlington Heights.

KIMBALL. Prairie State, 11 April 1851: Died in Jerseyville on the 5th, Edmond, only son of John and Caroline Kimball, age 17 years. Leaves many friends and relatives to mourn the loss.
KIMBLE. 3 September 1986: picture of John kimble appears in his obituary: John Kramer Kimble, 60, of Jerseyville, died 23 August at his residence. He was born 15 September 1925 in Macomb to the late Frank C. and Ruth Esther (Kramer) Kimble. He married Pauline Jingst in Quincy on 28 June 1952. He was teacher for 30 years in several Illinois school districts, retiring in 1985 from Jersey Comm. High school where he was a music teacher. He was a member of Delhi Baptist church. Survivors include his wife, Pauline, of Jerseyville; step Mother, Marguerite Kimble of Macomb; daughters, Patty Pruitt and Paula and Pamela Kimble, all of Jerseyville; sons Jeff and Jerald, both of Jerseyville; sister Rachel Bliven of Macomb; and a grandson. Visitation was 25 August at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville, and the funeral was 26 August at Delhi Baptist church with the Rev. Daniel Mead officiating. Burial was in the Bardolph, Illinois Cemetery. Memorials have been established to the Delhi Baptist church or the American Cancer Society.

KIMPLING. Nov 1982: Jerseyville – Patricia Ann Kimpling, 54, of 1110 West Spruce Street, died at 7:30 am today at her residence. Prior to her illness, she was a teacher. Born in Gary, Ind., daughter of Martha (Damotte) Haycraft of Carlinville and the late Charles Haycraft, she married Donald Kimpling and he survives. In addition to her husband, surviving is a sister, Shirley Greenwalt of Carlinville. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 pm Tuesday at Gubser Funeral Home. The body will be moved at noon Wednesday to the First Presbyterian church of Jerseyville and will lie in state until service time at 1:30 pm with the Rev. Simon A. Simon officiating. Burial will be in a Carlinville cemetery and memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

KING. Jerseyville Republican, 14 February 1924: Jeff King sold his blacksmith shop on East Prairie Street to Mott Brown and the new owner assumed charge Monday morning. King had been blacksmithing in Jerseyville ever since 1865, following the close of the civil war. He was born in slavery and as a boy learned the trade of blacksmith. Following the war he came to Jerseyville. When he first arrived he was employed by a Mr. Bell, who had a blacksmith shop in Jerseyville. In a few months King opened a shop in the east part of Jerseyville across the street from his present residence in a brick building. Later he moved to another location. King at the present time is 86 years of age and has continued longer at his anvil than any blacksmith in Illinois. From “The Examiner, 5 February 1878” – Jeff King, our well known blacksmith just returned from a visit to his aged mother, who, with four sisters and one brother, reside at Broad River, North Carolina, twelve miles from Rutherford, county seat. Mr. King was born at Broad River, and has not visited the scenes of his boyhood or seen his relatives there, for 32 years. Jeff was gone about a month.
KING. 3 January 1970: Final rites in Medora for R.C. King: Richard C. King, 38, son of Mr. and Mrs. James King of Fidelity, died at 2 pm Thanksgiving day in Lincoln following an extended period of ill health. Final rites were held Sunday afternoon at two o’clock at the Warner funeral home in Medora and burial was in Maple Lawn cemetery. Mr. King was born in Jersey county, 21 November 1932. Surviving him in addition to his parents are six brothers, Clarence of Rosewood Heights, Karl of Bethalto, Charles of Brighton, Grover, Roscoe and Harold of Fidelity, and two sisters, Mrs. Beulah Leivers of Cottage Hills and Mrs. Leona Mainord of Brighton.
KING. Feb. 1921: John King, colored, 52, died suddenly at his home in Jacksonville 4 Feb. The funeral services were held from the Jacksonville Baptist church 9 Feb. Interment was in the Jacksonville cemetery. The deceased was a son of Jeff King of this city.
KING. 28 October 1965: “Mrs. Frank King died Thursday in Jersey hospital” Mrs. Lillie Mae King, wife of Frank King of Jerseyville died Thursday afternoon, 21 October at 3 o’clock at the Jersey Community Hospital where she had been admitted late the previous evening. She had been in ill health for sometime. Friends called at the Gubser Funeral Home and then at the Gospel Assembly Church where final rites were held Monday afternoon, 25 October at 2 o’clock with the pastor, Rev. Harry Frazer, officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs. King was a daughter of the late James and Viola Davis Hawkins and was born in Jersey county 2 May 1902. Her age at the time of death was sixty-three years, five months and nineteen days. Surviving her in addition to her husband are seven children, Mrs. John Chandler, Robert Ralph King, Mrs. George R. Neikirk and Mrs. Gerald Cates of Jerseyville, William L. and Maurice Eugene King of Brighton and Mrs. Arthur Smith of Godfrey; one brother, Howard Hawkins of Calif.; six sisters, Mrs. Fred Bunzy of Brighton, Michigan; Mrs. Jess Boomer of Oregon, Mrs. Esto Shaw of Jerseyville, Mrs. Ora Beard of Godfrey, Mrs. Henry Dawdy of Aurora, and Mrs. Gilbert Greling of Van Dyke, Mich. She also leaves fifteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
KING. 5 February 1976: Services and burial for Mrs. Lucy King, 79, of Riverside, Calif., a former Jersey county resident, were held 30 January in Riverside. Mrs. King, the former Lucy Robinson, was a sister of Mrs. Carrie Watts of Jerseyville. The Kings operated a restaurant in Jerseyville for several years. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Frances Jane) Olsen and Mrs. John (Helen) Kinzel of California; and one grandson.
KING. Jersey County Democrat May 1918: Miss Veronica King, 17 years old, died at Soldiers Orphans Home at Norman, Illinois. Remains brought to Jerseyville. Funeral at Fales-Wiseman parlor. Rev. Neely. Burial in Oak Grove. She was about to enter upon a course in trained nursing at St. John’s hospital in St. Louis. She was daughter of Mrs. Maggie Stamps. Mrs. Updike took her to the (orphans) home about three years ago.

KING. 1906: Emma J. King was born 19 May 1864; she was married to Harvey Skiff 26 December 1882, died 19 November 1906, aged 42 years and six months. To this union 6 children were born, 2 sons and 4 daughters. Three have preceded her to rest. She leaves an aged mother, and daughter, two sons and one brother, host of relatives and friends to mourn their loss. The funeral service was conducted at C.P. Church, Fieldon, Illinois. By Rev. I.D. KING. Jun. 1984: James Edward King, 94, formerly of Fidelity, died at 8:30 am 18 June at Garnets Chateau nursing home in Jerseyville. A self-employed painter, he was born in Carrollton, son of the late James and Leona (Cummings) King. He married the former Alice Virginia Keller on 29 April 1912, and she preceded him in death in 1984. Surviving are two daughters, Leona Maninord of Jerseyville and Beulah Lievers of Cottage Hills; four sons, Clarence Rolland King of Godfrey, Karl Lee King of Bethalto, Charles King of Union City, Ind., and Harold King of Brighton; 33 grandchildren; 62 great grandchildren; and 12 great-great grandchildren. Visitation will be at Warner Targhetta funeral home in Medora, where services will be conducted with Rev. R. E. George officiating. Burial was in Maple Lawn cemetery in Fidelity. Memorials may be sent to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or the Fidelity Baptist church, of which he was a member.

Feb 1962: Mrs. Lela King died Thursday in hospital: Mrs. Lela Ellen King, 207 East Pearl Street, Jerseyville, died at eleven o’clock Thursday morning, 25 January at Barnes hospital in St. Louis. The body was brought to Jacoby Brothers funeral home where friends called after two o’clock Saturday afternoon. Funeral services were held at the funeral home at three-thirty o’clock Sunday, 28 Jan., with Rev. Mode Powell, Jr., pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs. King was born in Kane, 26 June 1896, a daughter of the late Charles and Maggie Hughes King, and her age at the time of death was sixty-five years, six months, and twenty-nine days. Her survivors are a sister, Mrs. Helen Osterholt, 21 Queen Drive, Route 2, Florissant, MO and nieces and nephews.
KING. 7 June 1973: Funeral mass for Mrs. Marie W. Wendle, 57, of Granite City was celebrated at the Sacred Heart Church in Granite City with burial in St. Patrick’s cemetery. Her death occurred 30 May at St. Elizabeth’s hospital, Granite City. She was born in Jersey county and had lived in Alton before moving to Granite City 22 years ago. Mrs. King was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. Survivors are her husband, Floyd A. King; two brothers, Edgar Wendle of Jerseyville and Clemens Wendle of Godfrey and her mother, Mrs. Minnie Wendle of Alton.
KING. 11 July 1974: Final rites for Frank T. King, 82, of June Street, Jerseyville were held at the Gospel Assembly Church Saturday afternoon, 6 July with the Rev. Harry Frazer officiating. His death occurred at 7:15 pm on 3 July at Greenwood Manor. Interment was in the Oak Grove cemetery. He was born on 6 March 1892, in Jersey county, a son of the late Frank B. and Clara Rhodes King. His wife, Lillie Mae King, preceded him in death. A World War I veteran, Mr. King was a member of the American Legion and the Gospel Assembly Church. His survivors include four daughters, Mrs. John (Dorothy) Chandler, Mrs. George (Shirley) Niekirk of Jerseyville, Mrs. Art (Lois) Smith of Godfrey and Mrs. Gerald (Barbara) Cates of Alton; three sons, William L. King of Brighton; Robert Ralph King of Jerseyville and Morris Eugene King of Godfrey; and one sister, Mrs. Ella Cummings of Jerseyville; 16 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sisters, one brother and two children. Visitation was held at the Gubser Funeral Home. Military services were conducted at the graveside by the American Legion. The family has designated the heart fund as a memorial.
KING. 11 June 1951: Robert E. King died in West: Jerseyville relatives received word this week of the death of Robert E. King, a former resident of this city, which occurred at eight o’clock Tuesday evening, 8 May at his home in Riverside, California. He had been in failing health for some time and his condition had been critical since last November. Mr. King was born and reared in Jerseyville and his age at the time of death was sixty one years. For a number of years Mr. King was superintendent of the Jerseyville office of the International Shoe Company. He later entered the insurance business here, and before leaving here he operated a restaurant for some time. The family moved from here to St. Louis where they spent eight years and from there went to Riverside where they have continued to make their home. In California, Mr. and Mrs. King operated a turkey ranch and at the time he was stricken he was an accountant for a construction firm. The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lucy King; two daughters, Mrs. John Kinzel of Riverside, and Mrs. Charles Olsen of Monterey Park; his mother, Mrs. Sarah Patton of Riverside; two half brothers, Dick and Fern Patton, and two half sisters, Mrs. Kenneth Neely and Florence of California. Funeral services are being held Friday afternoon, 11 May, in Riverside and burial will be held there.

Edward Franklin King, infant son of Lillie M. and Frank King, died at the home of his grandparents in the east end of Jerseyville Sunday, 19 June 1921, at 4:00 pm at the age of 2 years, 5 months and fourteen days. He was born in Grafton, 5 January 1919. He leaves to mourn him, his father and mother and infant sister, Dorothy Irene, and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Porter of the Jerseyville M.E. church. Edward was a bright little boy and always had a smile for everyone. He will be greatly missed by all his relatives and friends. The remains were laid to rest in Oak Grove cemetery. “Dearest Edward thou has left us, and your face no longer we see. But in heaven we hope to meet thee, where no parting e’er shall be.

KIRBACH. 1957: Matthew Kirbach passes away – Matthew M. Kirbach, 56, passed away at his home northwest of here at 3:30 pm 23 Oct. He had been in failing health for some time. He was born 24 March 1901, the oldest of seven children of N.J. and the late Mrs. Kirbach. His entire life was spent in this community. (Carrollton?) he attended St. John’s school and was married 2 September 1931 to Miss Agnes Abeln. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society and was a substitute rural mail carrier. Surviving besides his wife are the following children: Mrs. Joe Steinacher, Ralph, Kenneth, Diana and Donald who is in the navy at Norman, Oklahoma, and three grandchildren. Surviving also are two sisters, Mrs. Robert King of here and Mrs. Donald Controy of Enola, Pa., and four brothers, Fred, John, Francis, and Lawrence, all of here. The rosary was recited at 8 pm Thursday and Friday at the Mehl Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted by the right Rev. Monsignor Michael Enright at St. John’s church at 9 am Saturday, 26 Oct. Interment will be in St. John’s cemetery.
KIRBACH. Mar. 1954: Mrs. Sarah Kirbach of Carrollton, mother of three Jersey residents, died last week at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Arlington short in Carrollton. Her death followed an extended period of illness. Three of the ten sons and daughters surviving Mrs. Kirbach are Mrs. C.C. Grizzle, Mrs. Lester Mourning and Henry Hyde of Jerseyville. The other surviving daughters and sons are Mrs. Short, Mrs. Bert Brannon and Mrs. Clifton Prough of Carrollton and Mrs . Marvin Tillery of White Hall, Alfred, Harold and Fred Hyde of Carrollton. She also leaves two brothers, Jesse Hardwick of White Hall and Lafe Hardwick of Kane, twenty-nine grandchildren and twenty-seven great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday, 28 February at the Mt. Gilead Baptist church with Rev. William Boston officiating. Interment was in the Baptist cemetery.
KIRBACH. no dates noted: A funeral mass was celebrated at St. John’s Catholic church in Carrollton for Andrew W. Kirbach, 65, who died at 1:25 p.m. 15 May at St. John’s hospital, Springfield following a short illness. He was born in Greenfield, a son of Mary Ablen Kirbach of Carrollton and the late Henry C. Kirbach. He retired as a mail carrier in 1981. The World War II army veteran married the former Cecilia Steinacher 20 June 1945 in Carrollton. In addition to his wife and mother he is survived by eight Daughters, Sister Mary Marlene, O.p. of Hardin, Margaret Brannan, Eldred; Mary Niemeyer, Kane; Nancy Zipprich, Jerseyville; Judy Kirbach, Chatham; Joan Payne and Theresa Rosentreter, both of Carrollton; and Ruth Kirbach, at home; two sons, James of Virden and Michael at home. Other survivors are five grandchildren; two step grandchildren; a sister, Magdalene Pennington of Carrollton; and three Brothers, Edmond of Jerseyville, Leonard of Carrollton and Henry of Bloomington. American Legion rites were conducted at the church cemetery. The church and the American Cancer Society have been named as memorials.
KIRBACH. Carrollton – Mary Anna Kirbach, 95, died at 2 pm Monday, 26 August 1991, at North American health care center in White Hall. She was a nurse aide for 26 years at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton, retiring in 1976. Born in Jerseyville on 26 April 1896, she was a daughter of the late William and Elizabeth (Stoffer) Abeln. On 16 May 1916, in Greenfield, she married Henry C. Kirbach. He died 17 July 1956. Surviving are a daughter, Magdalene Pennington of Carrollton; three sons, Leonard Kirbach of Carrollton, Edmund Kirbach of Godfrey, and Henry Lawrence Kirbach of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 20 grandchildren; 32 great- grandchildren; and five sisters, Josephine Kallal, Cecelia Kallal and Margaret Skinner, all of Jerseyville, Elizabeth Weishaupt of Batchtown and Agnes Kirbach of Carrollton. Preceding her in death were a son, Andrew Kirbach; a great grandson; a brother, John Ablen; and three sisters, Christiana Schribner, Anna Feldman and Catherine Abeln. Visitation is from 5 to 9 pm Wednesday at Airsman-Hires funeral home in Carrollton, with a rosary recitation at 7 pm. A funeral mass is at 10 am Thursday at St. John’s Catholic church in Carrollton, with the Rev. Joseph O’reilly as celebrant. Burial is in the church cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church where she was a member.
KIRBACH. no date noted: Clement F. Kirbach, 70, a farmer of R.1, Jerseyville, died at 5:01 pm 20 December at St. Anthony’s hospital in Alton. He was born 8 May 1913 in Greene county, son of the late Martin C. and Anna Hinrichs Kirbach. Kirbach was a member of the fourth degree Knights of Columbus, Jerseyville Moose Lodge and Jersey county farm bureau. His survivors are his wife, the former Virginia Stanley whom he married on 23 April 1953 in Carrollton; sons, Marty of Dow, and David of Jerseyville, brothers, Clarence and Raymond and Sisters, Louisa Steinacher and Virginia Alfeld, all of Carrollton. A funeral mass was celebrated 23 December at Holy Ghost Catholic church with father William Hembrow and the Rev. Simon A. Simon officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. The Lewis and Clark Lung Assn. and Holy Ghost school have been named as memorials.
KIRBY. Jerseyville Republican, 11 August 1893: funeral of James H. Kirby from home of father, L. L. Kirby attended by more people than any ever held in the city. Buggies and carriages were tied to fences along road in front of the house for several blocks. Dr. Bulkley of Alton served. Kirby was a member of Hickory Grove Camp MWA. The Examiner, Jerseyville, Ill., 22 January 1879: Mrs. Elizabeth Kirby (nee Miss Elizabeth Gaston) relict of the late Nathaniel Kirby, died last Friday, 17 January 1879 at the residence of her son, L.L. Kirby, Esq. In this city. The deceased was born 31 March 1788 at Monmouth, N.J., and was in her 91st year. Miss Gaston was married to Mr. Kirby 16 February 1810. Her husband died 9 August 1833. Mrs. Kirby came to Jersey county in 1838 and united with the First Presbyterian church here, on profession of faith in 1842. She was the mother of six children, all of whom arrived to adult age; three of whom are now Living; Lebbens L. Kirby, William Kirby, Mrs. Maria Voorhees. She had had forty-five grandchildren and twenty-nine are now living; twenty-nine great grandchildren and twenty-two are living: Charles H. Voorhees, John B. Voorhees, Asa Snell, Libbie Remer, Maggie Mcadams, George Voorhees, children of Maria Voorhees; N.T. Kirby, Libbie Kirby, Sarah M. Kirby, Wm. H. Kirby, Robert Kirby, Ella Kirby, Josie Kirby, Children of William Kirby; George H. Kirby, Jennie Conklin, Emma Beaty, children of Thomas Kirby; Kate Beaty, Georgia Beardslee, Jennie J. Bates, Fannie Stallings, Benton Bonnell, Dayton Bonnell, Charles Bonnell, children of Sarah Bonnell; James Kirby, Jett T. Kirby, Hattie Kirby, Children of Lebbens L. Kirby; Charles Kirby, Etta Read, Fannie Kirby, children of George H. Kirby. Of her brothers and sisters only one is living, Joseph Gaston, Webster, NY who is the father of Mrs. Charles H. Voorhees. The funeral was preached by her pastor, Rev. J.W. Stark, and the services were largely attended from the residence of L.L. Kirby. Mrs. Kirby was an upright Christian; she was diligent in business, fervent in spirit serving the lord; all her time was occupied, and the lamp of her life was burned completely dry; she lived the full measure of her earthly career, and as the light of the lamp consumes the oil and goes out, so too her life was entirely spent. Her industry was proverbial and this she transmitted to all her children. She prepared the following lines during her illness in the fall: farewell my friends, I love so dear, I am not gone, still living here; the debt is paid, the grace is free, prepare yourselves to follow me.

Abram Derek Kirby, 8 year old son of Roger Kirby and Katherine (Frazer) Kirby, both of Jerseyville , died at 4:10 am Wednesday, 19 July 1989, at Cardinal Glennon hospital in St. Louis. Abram was the victim of a two vehicle accident Tuesday evening on Missouri Highways 67 and 94 near West Alton. He was born in Jerseyville and had just completed second grade at New Bloomfield, (MO) Elementary school. In addition to his parents, surviving are his stepmother, Kimberly Kirby of Jerseyville; a brother, Andrew Kirby, and two Sisters, Arlee and Abbie Kirby, all of Jerseyville; two Stepbrothers, Craig and Cory Utterback of Jerseyville; grandparents, Wayne and Shirley Kirby of Grafton and Fred and Ruth Ann Frazer of New Bloomsdale, Missouri.; great Grandparents; Vella Reando of St. Louis, Missouri, and Val and Annice Kirby of Strawberry, Arkansas. Visitation is 5-9 pm today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral services are 1 pm Friday at Otterville Baptist church. The Rev. Joy Settles will officiate. Burial is in Oak Grove cemetery, Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children, St. Louis.
KIRBY. Unknown newspaper, 21 January 1965: “T. W. Kirby, Jr., retired druggist, died Saturday”: Thomas Wesley Kirby, Jr., retired druggist and a former city official of Jerseyville, died at four forty o’clock Saturday afternoon at St. Luke’s hospital in St. Louis where he had been a patient since Wednesday. Severe impairment of health had caused his retirement from business almost twelve years ago, and since then he had been confined to his home the major part of the time. (Picture of the deceased appears here in obituary). Visitation hours were at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home and friends called there until noon Tuesday, then at the First Presbyterian church where services were held at two o’clock. The Rev. M. Edwards Breed officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr. Kirby, who had lived in Jerseyville most of his life, was born 24 April 1902 in Champaign, the son of the late Thomas Wesley and Edith Merriman Kirby. Upon graduating from the local high school, he chose to follow in the footsteps of his father in the pharmacy profession and enrolled at St. Louis College of Pharmacy from which he later received his degree. Returning to Jerseyville on 1 January 1925, the young registered pharmacist became associated with his father in the firm of T. W. Kirby and Son, which they continued to operate until their simultaneous retirement on 8 February 1953. They disposed of the business at that time to a longtime employee, Ivan Heiderscheid, who retains the Kirby name. Mrs. Kirby’s marriage to the former Miss Edith McCarthy of St. Louis took place on 30 January 1924. When they came to Jerseyvile to reside a year later the couple took an active part in business, church, and community affairs. His fraternal affiliations included the Jerseyville Lodge, No. 394, AF & AM of which he was a past master, Jerseyville Chapter No. 140 R. A. M. Scottish Rite, Missouri Consistory No. 1, Thirty-second Degree, St.. Louis, Shrine and Moolah Temple, St. Louis. Ill health later caused his resignation from the Lions club of which he was a charter member and from the Shrine and consistory. As a youth Mr. Kirby became the first Demolay in Jersey county. Throughout the years he continued his interest in this organization and was a member of the Jerseyville Demolay advisory board for eleven and one half years. Mr. Kirby contributed to the educational field of Jerseyville by serving on the board of education of the former Jerseyville Grade School District No. 34 for four terms, from 1932 to 1943, the last ten years of which he served as board secretary. He became a member of the First Presbyterian church in 1913. In the course of membership Mr. Kirby was ordained ruling elder in 1940 and served as elder four terms, 1940 to 1948, and 1951 to 1959. He was Clerk of the Session of the church from 1953 to 1959, and trustee two terms from 1948 to 1956. From 1935 to 1943, Mr. Kirby was a member of the Jerseyville City Council serving as Commissioner of Accounts and Finances. He concluded the latter term by serving as Mayor by appointment following the death of Mayor Robert E. Flynn. Surviving Mr. Kirby are his wife, Mrs. Edith M. Kirby; one daughter, Mrs. John T. Unknown newspaper, 29 August 1957: Thomas Wesley Kirby, Sr., dean of druggists in this part of Illinois, died at ten-fifty o’clock Tuesday evening, 27 August, at the Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville where he had been a patient for the past six weeks. Prior to (a picture of the deceased appears here in the obituary.) his hospitalization here the veteran druggist had been a patient at St. Anthony’s hospital in St. Louis since April. Funeral services will be held at two o’clock Friday afternoon, 30 August at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. The Rev. M. Edwards Breed, pastor of the First Presbyterian church in Jerseyville, will conduct the services and burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr. Kirby was born in Jersey county, 11 November 1867, a son of the late George Henry and Emily Vaughn Kirby , and his age at the time of death was eighty- nine years, nine months and sixteen days. The decedent is survived by one son, Thomas W. Kirby, Jr. of this city; one granddaughter, Mrs. John T. (Edith Louis) Heard, Jr. of Webster Groves, Missouri; two great grandchildren, Thomas Kirby Heard and Jean Louise Heard of Webster Groves, Missouri; one sister, Mrs. Susie Knight of Jerseyville and one brother, Eugene Kirby of Champaign. Mr. Kirby was a member of the Jerseyville Lodge, AF & AM and Royal Arch Chapter. The death of Mr. Kirby brought to a close a career of seventy-two years in the drug business, a profession started when he was a youth of seventeen. His early work was with the firm of Remer and Duhadway in Jerseyville , remaining there until 1900. Following a two year interim during which time he was in the drug business in Champaign, Mr. Kirby returned to Jerseyville and brought the interest of Mr. Remer in the local store. Thirty-three years ago, Mr. Kirby’s only Son, T. W. Kirby, Jr.; a registered pharmacist, joined his father in the pharmacy business and the firm became known as T. W. Kirby and Son Drug Store, a name which it continues to carry. In 1953, the business was purchased by Ivan Heiderscheid who had been in the employ of the firm for a number of years. The former owners continued their affiliation with the business, and up until late spring the decedent was there regularly attending to some of his favorite “tasks”. A recognition which came to the veteran druggist in November, 1955 was the presentation of a plaque by the Jerseyville junior Chamber of commerce organization granting him a “lifelong membership with all rights and privileges” of the organization. The honor was bestowed upon Mr. Kirby for his long time service to the people of Jerseyville and surrounding communities.
KIRBY. Unknown newspaper, 16 January 1969: “Kirby burial at Oak Grove”: committal services were held at Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville for Mrs. Hildagarde P. Kirby, a former resident, whose death occurred earlier this month in Peoria. Mrs. Kirby was the widow of Jett A. Kirby, a member of one of the prominent earlier families of the area and an extensive landowner. Mrs. Kirby had been living in Peoria since returning to Illinois from California where the family moved a number of years ago and where they were residing at the time of the death of Mr. Kirby. Her son in law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Page of Peoria, came to Jerseyville for the committal services. While here they were guests for a short time in the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Downey. In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Kirby is survived by two sisters in California, including Miss Florence Palmstrom who at one time taught in the Jerseyville High school system.

Kirby of Springfield and Robert Kirby of Lincoln, Nebraska; three sisters, Mrs. Cory, Mrs. Elizabeth Leonard and Mrs. E. B. Stanley.
KIRBY. Unknown newspaper, undated: A memorial service for Mrs. Edith M. Kirby, long time resident of Jerseyville, was held at noon 9 April at the First Presbyterian church of Jerseyville. Her death occurred at 9 pm Easter Sunday in St. Louis following several months’ Illness. She had given her body to Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Mrs. Kirby, the former Edith McCarthy of St. Louis, was married to Thomas W. Kirby, Jr., a native of Jerseyville on 30 January 1924. They came to Jerseyville to make their home in August of that year. Kirby became associated in the drug store business with his father in the firm that continues under the name of Kirby Drug Store. Mrs. Kirby also assisted in the business. She was a charter member of the Jerseyville Woman’s Club and was also a member of the First Presbyterian church. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John T. (Edith Louise) heard of St. Louis, a grandson and granddaughter, Thomas Kirby Heard III of St. Louis and Jeane Heard of Greensboro, North Carolina. the First Presbyterian church has been designated as a memorial.

KIRBY. Died 06-11-1921. Jerseyville Republican, November, 1921: Miss Ella Mary Kirby, aged 59 years, 1 month and 23 days, died Sunday, 6 November at 7:10 pm at the home of her sister, Mrs. Walter B. Cory, with whom she has made her home for a number of years. Miss Kirby is the daughter of William and Experience Kirby, who were prominent pioneer residents of Jersey county. She lived in the county all of her life. For the past six weeks she had been seriously ill. The survivors are Mrs. Elizabeth Leonard, N. T. Kirby, of Springfield, Illinois; Robert Kirby of Lincoln, Nebraska, William Kirby of St. Louis; Mrs. Edward B. Stanley and Mrs. Walter B. Cory of this city. The funeral will be held from the home of her sister, Mrs. Walter B. Cory, Wednesday, 9 November at 2:30 pm, the Rev. Harrold S. Farrill officiating. Interment in Oak Grove cemetery.
KIRBY. Jerseyville Republican, 4 August 1910: Mrs. Sarah Kirby, widow of L. L. Kirby, died at her home in Jerseyville Tuesday morning, aged 81 years. Funeral was from Baptist church. Rev. Hicks devoted funeral service to her life, her works and her lovely Christian character. There were many floral bouquets. Sarah M. Post was born in Addison, Vermont, 13 February 1829. At the age of 6, she came to Jersey county with her parents making the long journey in wagons. She was united in marriage to L. L. Kirby on 6 January 1848. Nine children were born, two of whom survive her: Jett A. Kirby and Mrs. Hattie Smith; three Grandchildren, Hazel, Lafayette and Imogene Smith. Mr. and Mrs. Kirby were among the earliest settlers of Jersey county. Their energy, zeal and true Christian character gave to the new country its type of truest and most genuine manhood and womanhood. The Baptist church of Jerseyville was organized in 1841 and Mrs. Kirby had membership for 66 years. The weather was never too cold nor too hot, to prevent her from driving from her country home to attend the services of the church. Mr. and Mrs. Kirby in their early married life received into their home a little girl whom life had rendered homeless. This child grew up in the home and be came a real member of it; sharing in all its joys, the burdens and sorrows. You cannot think of this family without including Mary Rook and her loving devotion to this family.

KIRBY. Jersey County News, 24 May 1928: Charles Henry Kirby died at home in Fieldon, 73 years old. Burial was in Reddish cemetery near Fieldon from Fieldon Presbyterian church. He was son of George W. and Margaret Utt Kirby, born in Mississippi township. He married In 1879 Laura Darlington who died in 1884. Later in 1886 he married Nancy Reddish and she survives. Also surviving are: one son, Harry L. Kirby; one grandson; two sisters, Mrs. Etta Reed of Tampa , Florida and Mrs. Fannie Abbott of Texas.
KIRBY. Died 23-03-1967. Unknown newspaper, 30 March 1967: “Kirby funeral services held on Saturday”: funeral services for Harry L. Kirby, Sr., retired farmer of Fieldon, were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home on Saturday afternoon at two o’clock. Rev. M. Edwards Breed, pastor of the First United Presbyterian church, officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation hours were at the funeral home. Mr. Kirby’s death occurred Thursday, 23 March at 1:20 am at Boyd memorial hospital in Carrollton where he had been a patient three weeks. A son of the late Charles H. and Nancy reddish Kirby, he was born at Fieldon on 9 April 1889 and had spent all of his life there where he was engaged in farming until his retirement. His age at death was 77 years, 11 months, and 14 days. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Dora Beatty Kirby, and one son, Harry Lee Kirby, Jr., both of Fieldon.

Kirchner had been a custodian for Pere Marquette Lodge in Grafton. Born in Jerseyville, he was the son of the late Elmer and Rosa (Springman) Kirchner. He married the Former Lorraine Poore in St. Charles, Missouri, on 3 November 1942. She survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Betty Kirchner of Blytheville, Arkansas., Rhonda Manski of Murrysville, Pennsylvania, and Deanne Wood of Marion, Indiana; a son, Thomas Kirchner of Jerseyville; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two sisters, Thelma Weller of Jerseyville and Rosemary Taylor of Wood River; and a brother, Earl Kirchner of Kane. Visitation will be 4-9 pm Wednesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. At Healing Waters temple in Jerseyville, visitation will continue 11 am Thursday until time of services at 1 pm. The Rev. Olan Hill will officiate. Burial will be in Hardin cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church, where Kirchner had been a member. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Cheryl Kirchner, three Brothers, Lester, Henry and Bill, one sister, Ella Hardy and one grandson.

Kirchner, 56, of Alton, formerly of Jerseyville, were conducted from Gent ‘s Funeral Chapel, Alton, on 2 April, with the Rev. Everett B. Chambers, pastor of the First Baptist church of Jerseyville officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He died at St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton on 30 March as a result of injuries sustained in a head on collision on 21 March, south of Medora. Kirchner was of the ballistics department of Olin Industries at the time of his death. He is survived by his widow, Virginia Farrelly Kirchner; one son, Darrell G. of Morgtown, West Virginia; two stepdaughters, Mrs. George (Sharon) Sneed of St. Louis and Mrs. Sheila Hager of Springfield; two grandsons; and one Sister, Mrs. Preston (Eunice) Mowen of Jerseyville. Kirchner, 56, of Alton, a native of Jerseyville, died at 8 am on 30 March at St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton where he had been a patient for ten days after being injured in a two-car accident south of Medora. His wife, the former Virginia Farrelly, also suffered injuries. Mary Roth, 86, of Alton and her nephew, Donald Kelly, 55 of Dow were killed in the same accident. Final rites were held on 2 April at the Gent Funeral Home in Alton.

Funeral rites were held at the Jay B. Smith Funeral Home in Maplewood, Missouri, on 11 January, and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery, Jerseyville. Mrs. Kirchner, whose home was in Richmond Heights, was born in Jersey County, on 8 November 1897, a daughter of the late George and Alzada Mcdow Spangle. She was educated in the Jerseyville school system and since 1923 had resided in the St. Louis area. Her immediate survivors are one son, Harold D. Kirchner of Redlands, California; two grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Russell (Mildred ) Little of Springfield. Nieces and nephew living here are Miss Melba Nobe, Mrs. Howard Wadlow, Jr., and Bernard Spangle. Mrs. Kirchner was a member of the Dr. Silas Hamilton Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

KIRCHNER. Died 21-02-1964. Unknown newspaper, 27 February 1964: “H. Kirchner, ex-sheriff, died Friday” – Herman Christopher Kirchner of this city, former city and county official, died Friday afternoon, 21 February at 1:35 o’clock at Garnet’s Nursing Home where he had resided six days. His death followed an extended period of ill health. The family home was at 407 West Spruce Street. Mr. Kirchner was elected Sheriff of Jersey County in 1954 and served a four year term. He also served eight years as Deputy Sheriff during the regimes of Sheriff Herman H. Blackorby, Jr., and the late Sheriff C. E. Wedding. Mr. Kirchner was employed as radio operator for one year during the term of office of Sheriff Howard Perdun. In 1951, Mr. Kirchner was elected a member of the Jerseyville City Council and served as Commissioner of Public Property. He resigned the post in December, 1954, to assume his duties as sheriff. A resident of Jerseyville for twenty-seven years, Mr. Kirchner and his wife engaged in the grocery business for five years, and he also operated a filling station for a time. The decedent operated a milk route in the county for ten years. Mr. Kirchner was a son of the Late Otha and Mary Brockmeyer Kirchner and was born in Jersey County on 11 September 1890. His age at the time of death was seventy-three years, five months and ten days. he was a member of the Otterville Baptist church and of Jerseyville Lodge No. 394, AF & AM surviving Mr. Kirchner are his wife, Mrs. Nina L. Kirchner, one daughter, Mrs. Preston (Eunice) Mowen of Jerseyville, one son, Hurbert Kirchner of Alton, two grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Betha Myers of Jerseyville. One daughter Mrs. Melva Oliphint, preceded him in death. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where final rites were held Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock. Rev. Mode Powell, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Masonic services were held Saturday evening at the funeral home.

Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home prior to the time the body was moved to the church for the services. Mr. Kirchner was born in Jersey County, 5 July 1895, a son of the late Charles H. and Alvina Hooper Kirchner. His age at the time of death was sixty-two years, one month and fifteen days. He was a long time employee of the Jerseyville branch of the International Shoe Company and was working there at the time the factory was closed. Surviving the decedent are his wife, Mrs. Retta Kirchner of Jerseyville; two brothers, William Kirchner of Otterville and Walter Kirchner of Jerseyville and one sister, Mrs. Paul (Louisa) Wock of Fieldon.

Mr. Kirchner was born in Jersey County, a son of the late Benjamin and Susan Davenport Kirchner, and his age at the time of death was eighty years, two months, and twenty eight days. His survivors are five sons, William, Lester E., and Earl Kirchner of Grafton, Paul E. Kirchner of Dow, and Henry Kirchner of Jerseyville; two daughters, Mrs. Thelma M. Weller of Jerseyville and Mrs. Rose Mary Holland of Grafton; one step-daughter Mrs. Ella Hardy of Jerseyville; twenty-four grandchildren; great grandchildren; one brother, George Kirchner of Fieldon, and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Ferguson of Jerseyville and Mrs. Nellie Ayres of Hamburg. His parents, one brother, and four sisters preceded him in death.

Everett Chambers officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He died unexpectedly at 9:15 am on 6 February at Alton memorial hospital. Kirchner was a printer at the Alton Telegraph for 22 years and had worked at the Democrat News at one time. He was a World War II veteran. He was born 22 November 1915 in Jersey County, a son of Floyd and Sarah Dower Kirchner. His survivors are his wife, the former Maura M. Pauselli; two sons, Richard E. and James E. of Jerseyville; two grandchildren; one brother, Morris Kirchner, and a sister, Verona Waterfall , both of Edwardsville.

A farmer, he was born 29 January 1907 in Otter creek township, Jersey County, a son of William and Ida Spangle Kirchner. He is survived by his wife, the Former Lyda Davis whom he married in 1948; three sons, Harold and Lloyd of Otterville and Kendall of east Alton; three grandchildren. He was a member of the Jersey County Farm Bureau. Visitation from 5 to 9 pm Monday at Jacoby Funeral Home. The American Diabetes Association has been named as the memorial.

Clay Noah, Jr. And John Wilson officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. She died at 4:15 am on 3 November at Washington Christian Village, Washington, Illinois. She was born 4 October 1904 in Jerseyville, daughter of the Late Asa and Catherine Weisner Norris. She is survived by her Husband, Walter A. KIRCHNER. Died 11-12-1881. Republican Examiner, 16 December 1881: George Christopher Kirchner died at his home, three miles south of Fieldon on 11 December, aged 65 years. Funeral by Lutheran minister at home of deceased. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He was born at Erfurt, Germany on 17 January 1816. He was educated in his native land, came to this country in 1835 to Alton a short time, then to Richwoods township. In 1840, he married Elizabeth Thuston of Jerseyville. They lived together for 24 years. Twelve children were born, eight are living. She died in 1864. He married Mrs. Mary Charlotte Bueker (Klocke). She had one child and bore three more of this marriage. He wed her in 1871.

Leonard Tood (Todd?) officiated at the rites with interment in Oak Grove cemetery. His death occurred at 12:45 am Tuesday at Winter Park Memorial Hospital in Winter Park, Florida. He was born in Jersey County on 21 May 1907, the son of Harmon and Lennie Shafer Kirchner. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Kirchner operated Kirchner Freight Service before his retirement. Mr. and Mrs. Kirchner had resided in Florida for a year. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Thelma Gilleland Kirchner; two brothers, Roy E. of Medora, and Harold of White Hall ; and one sister, Mrs. Theda Elliott of Alton. One brother, Rev. Chris Kirchner, preceded him in death. Visitation hours were held at the funeral home.

Mrs. Kirchner, a daughter of the late Lewis and Emma Morman Spangle, was born in Jersey County on 14 March 1887 and her age at the time of death was 79 years, 2 months and 1 day. she had resided in the Otterville vicinity for many years and for several years served as a correspondent for the Democrat News. Kirchner, Retired Minister, Died Saturday” – Reverend George Kirchner of 1123 Central Avenue, Alton, who was a native of Jersey County, died unexpectedly Saturday after suffering a heart attack at his home. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the memorial hospital at two thirty-nine o’ clock. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Gent Chapel in Alton with the Rev. Carl O. Guinn officiating. Burial was in the Brighton cemetery. The Rev. Kirchner was born in Otterville area, 30 September 1888, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Kirchner. His age at the time of death was sixty-nine years, three months and eleven days. The decedent was educated in the county schools and following his graduation from high school he attended Shurtleff College and was ordained a minister in 1908. He later taught in the Grafton schools and from 1920 until 1925 he was engaged in the grocery business in North Alton. For many years he was engaged in evangelistic work, and prior to his retirement in 1950 he was pastor of Central Avenue Church of Christ. Surviving Rev. Kirchner are his wife, Florence E. Hartwick to whom he was married 18 October 1908 in Jersey County ; two daughters, Mrs. Raymond Loehler of Cottage Hills and Mrs. Robert Jouett of White Hall; a son, Robert J. Kirchner of Medora; three brothers, Ray of St. Louis, Russell of Springfield and Harold of White Hall, and a sister, Mrs. Lloyd Elliott of Godfrey.

Born on 27 November 1921, in Fieldon, he was a son of the late Elmer Benjamin and Rosa Springman Kirchner. Kirchner served with the Army Air Corps during World War II and married the former Eleanor Meier on 13 October 1944 in Overland, Missouri. His survivors are his wife; three daughters, Elaine Louise Medley of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Irene Delores Barnett of Jerseyville and Rosalee E. Williams of Moore, Oklahoma; three sons, David of Jacksonville, Dennis of Jerseyville and Donald of Otterville; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Thelma Weller of Jerseyville and Rosemary Taylor of Alton; and three brothers, William and Earl, both of Kane; Paul of Jerseyville. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son. The Rev. Robert McAdams officiated and burial was in the Otterville cemetery, Otterville, where military rites were conducted by the Grafton American Legion. Kirk was a member of Masonic Lodge 394, Loyal Order of the Moose 695, Elks Lodge 954, American Legion Post 492 and VFW Post 4528, all of Jerseyville. Born 24 December 1929 in Toledo, Ohio, he was a son of the late Robert W. and Rebecca (Long) Kirk. He married the former Annabelle “Ann” Bilbrey on 27 March 1954 at Venice, Illinois. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Peggy Sue Reynolds of Jerseyville; a son, Mike Kirk of Carlinville; and a grandson. Hicks. Additional obituary: Jerseyville Republican, June 1909: Agnes Runyan Smalley, born near Mt. Bethel, New Jersey on 20 March 1830, died. She married Lewis Kirkpatrick on 1 January 1851. Nine children were born; two of these, with her husband, have passed away. They lived near Mt. Bethel for five years after their marriage when they moved to Jersey County, Illinois. the last twelve years of her life was as an invalid, but was always found at her little table and would do whatever her hands could do. She leaves two sons, five daughters, six grandchildren. They all “rise up and call her blessed.”

Mrs. Kistner was born in Fieldon 15 August 1902. She moved to Blue Island in 1924 where she lived until she moved to Elmhurst a few years ago to live with her son, Glen. She was a long time active member of the Evangelical Community Church in Blue Island where she was a member of the Woman’s Guild and the choir. She was a sister of Gertrude Garrels and Marion Muir of Blue Island and Raymond Haushalter of Fieldon and had four grandchildren. Her husband was the late George kistner. The church was designated as a memorial.
KITZENBERGER. Died 00-09-1870. Jersey County Democrat, 8 September 1870: Charles Kitzenberger, a German, fell from upper story of City Mills and died 12 hours after the accident. He was fixing one of the elevators when plank gave way and he fell 16 feet through hatchway. He leaves wife and 2 children.
KITZMILLER. Unknown newspaper, undated: Jerseyville – Mrs. Ollie Mae Kitzmiller, 84, a former Jerseyville resident, died at 10 pm Sunday at Eldercare Nursing Home in Alton. A native of Jerseyville, she married George Kitzmiller, who died one year ago. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Nettie Henrion of Affton, Missouri, and Mrs. Katie Lane of St. Louis; five grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 1:30 pm Tuesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville with the Rev. Vale Walkington officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call after 4 pm today at the funeral home.
KITZMILLER. Died 00-11-1971. Unknown newspaper, 18 November 1971: “Kitzmiller final rites in Medora “: Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Joseph Dana for Mrs. Josephine E. Kitzmiller, wife of J. M. Kitzmiller, at the Warner Funeral Home in Medora Saturday afternoon, 13 November at 2 o’clock. Organ selections were provided by Mrs. James Mains. Interment was in Kemper cemetery. Lewis Jenkins, George Nixon, Raymond Bennett, W. D. Gilworth, Glenn Rhine and Dale Smith served as pallbearers. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Kitzmiller is survived by three children , Miss Martha Kitzmiller of Harvey, Mrs. Gene Schaefer and Martin Kitzmiller of Medora. Six grandchildren also survive.
KITZMILLER. Died 20-07-1961. Unknown newspaper, 31 July 1961: “A. L. Kitzmiller died Thursday in St. Louis hospital”: Andrew L. (Jack) Kitzmiller, Wood River realtor and brother of Mrs. Henry Krueger and Mrs. Estol Hefner of Jerseyville, died Thursday, 20 July at 4 pm in Missouri Baptist hospital in St. Louis where he had been admitted four hours earlier. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the First Presbyterian church in Wood River with the Rev. Manly Mace, officiating. Burial was in Valhalla memorial Park. Mr. Kitzmiller was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Kitzmiller and was born and reared at Jerseyville. While a resident here he affiliated with the Masonic Lodge. He was a retired Shell Oil Company employee with thirty years service and had been an assistant manager of the cracking department previous to his retirement five years ago. He had resided in Alton-Wood River area for 29 years, and had been in Wood River the past 14 years. He conducted his real estate business at his home, 161 Eaton Avenue. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Wood River, and belonged to the Alton-Wood River Board of Realtors. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruth Meeker Kitzmiller; two brothers, Warren of Alton and William of San Bernardino, California and five sisters, Mrs. Florence Hendricks of Alton, Mrs. Henry (Margaret) Krueger and Mrs. Estol (Carrie Lee) Hefner of Jerseyville, Mrs. Hallie Hall and Mrs. Mary Snow of St. Louis.
KITZMILLER. Died 08-03-1957. Unknown newspaper, 14 March 1957: “A. Kitzmiller, retired farmer, died at hospital”: Andrew Kitzmiller, Sr., a retired farmer of Mississippi township, died Friday morning, 8 March at eleven-ten o’clock at the Jersey Community Hospital where he had been moved earlier that morning. The decedent was a son of the late Joseph and Adeline Bell Kitzmiller and was born in Jersey County on 7 January 1870. He was aged eighty-seven years, two months and one day. Mr. Kitzmiller is survived by three sons, Warren Kitzmiller of Alton, A. L. Kitzmiller of Wood River and William W. Kitzmiller of San Bernardino, California; five daughters, Mrs. Heney Krueger and Mrs. R. E. Hefner of Jerseyville, Mrs. Florence A. Hendricks of Alton, Mrs. Hallie Hall and Mrs. Mary B. Snow of St. Louis; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren, and one brother, Edward Kitzmiller of Greenfield. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Final rites were held Monday morning, 11 March at nine-thirty o’clock at St. Francis Xavier church. Requiem mass was celebrated by Rev. Father John J. Clancy and interment was in Valhalla Memorial Park.
