MABERRY. Died 23-03-1923. James W. Maberry 65 years died at home of son, Grover Maberry near Elsah on March 23, 1923. Was a farmer, leaves wife and three sons. Funeral from Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Newbern. Rev. Francesco Del Canto serving. Buried in Newbern cemetery.
MACK. Died 08-00-1973. Funeral rites for Mrs. Dorothy Linan Mack of East St. Louis, widow of the late Lawrence Mack of Jerseyville were conducted Tuesday morning at John Barnes Funeral Home in East St. Louis. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery here. She was born July 23, 1906 and was a sister of Charles Linan of St. Louis.
MACK. Died 01-02-1982. Funeral mass for Mrs. Margaret Mack, 93, of Jerseyville will be celebrated tomorrow (Friday) morning at 10:30 o’clock at St. Francis Xavier church with Father Terrance Shea celebrant. Her death occurred February 1 at Garnet’s Nursing Home. Interment will be in St. Francis Xavier cemetery. She was born September 23, 1878 in Calhoun County the daughter of Anthony and Margaret Leasenfelt. Her husband was the late Henry Mack. She is survived by one Brother, Anthony Leasenfelt of Shipman. Friends may call at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home after 4:00 p.m. this afternoon (Thursday). The rosary will be said at 7:00 this evening.
MACK. Died 05-07-1960. Mrs. Sue Clark Mack of Jerseyville died at ten forty-five oclock Tuesday evening, July 5, at the family residence,where she had been bedfast since early spring. Since the onset of her illness shehad also received hospital treatment. Friends may call at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville after four oclock this (Thursday) afternoon. Funeral services will be held there at 2:30 o’clock Friday afternoon with Rev. M. Edwards Breed officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. Mrs. Mack, a resident of Jerseyville for many years, was born in Moline, Kansas, November 10, 1887, a daughter of the late Charles and Katie Patterson Clark. Her age at the time of death was 72 years, 7 months, and 29 days. Surviving the decedent are a son, Lawrence C. Mack of East St. Louis; two daughters, Mrs. Edward (Betty) McKay of Alton and Mrs. Lloyd (Eileen) McDonald, 720 North Elm, Greenville; four grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Pearl Hoskinson of Chatham. Mrs. Mack, of Jerseyville, was a member of the Jerseyville Aerie No. 2747 F.O.E., and Senior International.
MACKEL. Died 15-05-1951. Joseph Mackel, a former resident of Jerseyville, died at Alexian Brothers hospital in St. Louis Tuesday, May 15, at 5:30 o’clock. He had resided in St. Louis the past four years. Mr. Mackel, a retired plasterer, was born in Jerseyville, June 14, 1864, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Mackel. His age at the time of death was 86 years, 11 months and one day. Surviving the decedent are his wife, Mrs. Mary C. Mackel; two sons, Roy F. Mackel of Alton and Olin Lee Mackel of St. Louis; three grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. The body was brought to Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville where friends may call until the hour of the funeral. Services will be held at the Funeral Home Friday afternoon, May 18, at one oclock. Rev. F. W. Schwarzlose, pastor of the First Methodist church, will officiate and interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery
MACKELDEN. Died 14-02-1985. The funeral of Maud May Mackelden, 98, of Jerseyville who died at10:20 a.m. February 14 at Jersey Community hospital, was conducted at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home with the Rev. V. Clay Noah officiating. She was born February 7, 1887 in Jersey County to the late William W. and Emma C. Rusk Felter and married Charles A. Mackelden on January 18, 1924 in St. Louis. He died July 18, 1953. She is survived by a Stepson, Leo C. Mackelden of Pensacola, Florida, and sister-in-law, Mrs. Hattie Mourning, Jerseyville, nieces and nephews. Burial was in Grimes cemetery. The First Baptist church of which she was a member has been named as a memorial.
MADISON. Died 07-12-1984. Services for Herbert E. Madison, 80, 407 E. Prairie, Jerseyville, were conducted at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home by the Rev. David McGuire with burial in Hardin cemetery. He died at 9:05 a.m. December 7 at his residence. The self-employed carpenter was born June 13, 1904 in Calhoun County, son of the late John and Mary Margaret Droege Madison, and married Margie Taylor. His survivors are two Daughters, Barbara Shipp of Cahokia and Jackline Shaw of Arlington, Texas; sisters, Clara Cox of Alton and Mary Plummer of Hardin; and four grandchildren. The American Cancer Society has been named as the memorial.

MADISON. Died 23-11-1975. Mrs. Marjorie Jean Madison, 39, of Hamburg was pronounced dead on arrival at 3:26 a.m. on November 23, at the Jersey Community hospital following a car accident two and a-half miles south of Hamburg. She was born May 21, 1936 in Jersey County, a daughter of William F. and Evelyn E. Taylor. She was married to Herb Madison. Her survivors are a son, Joseph Lee Madison of Dow & daughter, Tammy Irene Ayres of Jerseyville; brothers, Marion, Glenn, Larry, James and Herschel Taylor of Alton, and sisters, Mrs. Alice Mielke, Mrs. Nellie Taylor and Linda Taylor of Alton, Mrs. Leah Beer of Arizona, Mrs. Myrtle Murphy of Blessing, Texas, and Mrs. Eleanor Myers of East Alton. The funeral was held on November 25 at Jacoby Funeral Home with the Rev. Thurman Strange officiating. Burial was in the oak grove cemetery.
MADSON. Died 20-08-1953. Damond Madson, twenty-one year old resident of Jerseyville, died at four-fifty o’clock Thursday morning, August 20, at his home on North State Street following a short illness of pneumonia. The deceased was a son of the late John Madson and Mrs. Margaret Gessner Madson of Jerseyville, and was born in Jerseyville on March 9, 1932. In addition to his mother, Damond is survived by seven Brothers, Nestor of Havana, Clarence of Cincinnati, Arnold of Granville, Robert of Mexico, Missouri, Chester of Chicago and Morris and Warren of Jerseyville, and three sisters; Luella Johnson of Lincoln, Virginia Kruse of Havana and Avis of Jerseyville. The body may be viewed at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Funeral services are tentatively set for saturday afternoon, August 22, at the Funeral Home and interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery.
MADSON. Died 00-12-1948. John P. Madson of Jerseyville, a carpenter employed by the Dickie Construction Company, was fatally injured early Monday morning when he fell from a scaffold at Principia College where he was working on a housing project. His death occurred at ten forty-five o’clock at the Memorial hospital in Alton where he was taken in the college ambulance. According to reports the accident occurred a short time after he started to work. He was engaged in placing ceiling joists at the time of the mishap and it is estimated he fell about fifteen feet. An inquest will be held by Coroner Ben Staten of Madison County. Death is believed to have resulted from a skull fracture. The deceased was a native of Little Falls, Minnesota, and was the son of the late Laris and Karen Johnson Madson. His age at the time of death was sixty-eight years, nine months, and nine days. The Madson family has resided in Jerseyville for the past twenty years. Mr. Madson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret Madson; eight sons, Nestor of Havana, Clarence of Portsmouth, Ohio, Morris, Warren and Damond of Jerseyville, Arnold of Granville, Robert of Springfield and Chester of Peoria; three daughters, Mrs. Luella Johnson of Texas, Mrs. Virginia Kruse of Havana and Mrs. Avis Green of Jerseyville; and twelve grandchildren. Funeral services were held at two o’clock Wednesday afternoon, December15, at the Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home, with Rev. Louis V. Huber officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.
MADSON. Died 28-02-1992. Morris “Jerk” Clifford Madson, 79, died at 11:30 a.m. Friday, February 28, 1992 at St. Louis University hospital. A truck driver for Morgan Distributing in Alton for 30 years, he retired in 1975. He was a U. S. Navy World War II veteran and a member of Jerseyville Elks 954 and Eagles 2747. Born in Little Falls, Minn., October 24, 1912, he was a son of the late John and Margaret Madson. He married the former Alice Marie Kallal May 20, 1951 in Pocahontas, Ark. She survives. Also surviving are a son, John “Moe” Madson of Jerseyville; a sister, Avis Lester of Jerseyville; and four brothers, Arnond Madson of Grandville, Chester Madson of Monmouth, and Robert and Warren “Tug” Madson, both of Jerseyville. Three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Vistation is from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Jacoby-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are at 10:00 a.m. Monday. The Rev. William Hembrow will officiate. Military graveside rites will be conducted at St. Francis Xavier cemetery in Jerseyville by American Legion Post 492 and VFW Post 4528, both of which he was a member. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Holy Ghost school in Jerseyville or American Cancer Society.

MAGUIRE. Died 12-12-1988. Bertha M. Maguire, 95, of Jerseyville died December 12 at Greenwood Manor Nursing Home. She was born Apr.17, 1893 in Green County to the Late Siegel Busch and Othilda Brockmeyer. She married William Lloyd Maguire on Aug. 16, 1917, in Jerseyville. He died Jun. 19, 1969. Survivors include a son, Ralph of Godfrey; Daughters, Verna Van Tassel Wilson of Alton and Rowena Mcintire of Atlanta, Georgia; Brothers, Roy E. Busch of Fairfield, Arkansas; seven grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandsons. She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Maurita Harbour, and four brothers. Funeral service was Dec. 14 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville with Rev. Rick Francis officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Memorials may be made to Greenwood Manor Nursing Home and the Peace United Church of Christ.
MAGUIRE. Died 28-04-1968. Charles A. Maguire of 143 Watkins, Hartford, died Sunday, April 28, at 11:10 p.m. in Alton. He was a retired pipefitter. Final rites were held Wednesday afternoon at one o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville with Rev. Louis Purcell, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr. Maguire was a son of the late William and Lucy Clark Maguire, and was born in Jersey County February 22, 1886. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Grance Murphy Maguire, two daughters, Miss Doris Maguire and Mrs. Frederick Hendricks of Rosewood Heights, four sons, Ernest of Wood River, Charles and Orville of Alton, and Clarence of California, three Brothers, Lloyd and Claude Maguire of Jerseyville and Asa Maguire of Alton, one sister, Mrs. Geneva Collins of Jerseyville, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
MAGUIRE. Died 22-04-1976. The funeral of Claude S. “Buck” Maguire, 70, a retired Jerseyville policeman, was conducted Sunday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Gordon Shepard officiating. The Rev. Dorcie Hill said a prayer. His death occurred at 9:30 a.m. on April 22 at St. Mary’s hospital, St. Louis. Born June 7, 1905 in Jersey County, he was a son of William W. and Lucy B. Clark Maguire. His survivors are his widow, the former Sadie M. Sinclair, 106 Pleasant St., Jerseyville; two sons, Paul of Auokeek, Maryland and Donald of St. Louis; two daughters, Mrs. George (Marie) Poleet of Jerseyville and Mrs. Robert (Vera) Campbell of East Alton; 11 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a brother, Asa L. Maguire of Alton. His parents, four brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. Masonic rites were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home Saturday evening. The heart fund was designated as a memorial.
MAGUIRE. Died 30-04-1970. Ernest Maguire, 49 year old Wood River resident and kin of a number of Jersey County people, was fatally injured Monday afternoon when a boom from a crane fell on him. Maguire was working as a pipefitter on the boom at Clark Oil Company in Hartford when the accident occurred. He was moved to St. Joseph hospital in Alton at 1:30 p.m., and died of massive chest injuries at 2:25 o’clock. Rites for Mr. Maguire will be held this (Thursday) afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at Marks Mortuary in Wood River. Rev. Boyd Wagner will officiate at the services and burial will be in Woodland Hill cemetery, Wood River. Mr. Maguire was a son of the late Charles A. Maguire and Dora Daum Maguire and was born in Jersey County on July 30, 1920. He had resided in the Wood River area since early childhood.
MAGUIRE. Died 22-10-1874. Funeral services were held at the Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville on Friday, October 26, for Sadie M. Maguire, 70, Jerseyville, with Rev. John Wilson of the First Baptist church officiating. Burial was at Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs. Maguire was born in Jersey County August 1, 1905, the daughter of the late Lloyd and Margaret Cummings Sinclair. She died at 11 p.m. October 22 at Eunice Smith Extended Care, Alton. She was married to Claude “Buck” Maguire on October 3,1925 in Wood River and he died April 19, 1976. Mrs. Maguire was a retail sales clerk in the downtown business district for 15 years. She was a member of the First Baptist church and the Jersey Community Hospital Auxiliary. She is survived by two sons, Paul Maguire of Accokeek, Manyland and Donald Maguire of St. Louis, Missouri; two daughters Marie Poleet, Jerseyville and Vera Campbell, East Alton; 12 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two brothers, Leslie Sinclair, Edwardsville and Urban Sinclair, Jerseyville and one sister, Mary Hagen of Alton. She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
MAGUIRE. Died 18-07-1967. A number of Jersey County relatives attended funeral rites for Walter R. Maguire, a native of Jerseyville, held Friday morning in the Catholic Newman Chapel in Edwardsville. Rev. Father William Hagen of Chicago, a nephew of Mr. Maguire, was celebrant of the mass, and burial was in Calvary cemetery, Edwardsville. He was a member of St. Bernard’s Parish, Wood River. Mr. Maguire,73, who had been making his home with a son-in-law, William Schipkowski, in Edwardsville, died July 18 at St. Joseph’s hospital in Highland where he had been a patient a short time. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Maguire, and was born at Jerseyville September 27, 1893. He resided here until moving to Wood River where he was employed at the American Oil Company from 1925 until his retirement in 1958. Mr. Maguire’s marriage to Miss Kathleen Sinclair took place in Jerseyville January 22, 1917. The death of Mrs. Maguire took place in Jerseyville in March 1965, and a daughter Mrs. Dorothy Schipkowski, died November 29, 1966. Surviving Mr. Maguire are a son, William L. Maguire of Edwardsville, one daughter, Mrs. Frances Eileen Armenta, Kansas City, one sister, Mrs. John Collins; and four.
MAGUIRE. Died 06-26-1969. William Lloyd Maguire, 81 year old retired Jersey County farmer, was killed early Thursday morning when the 1958 Ford car he was driving was struck by a GM&O freight train at the crossing on East Exchange Street near the farm supply company in Jerseyville. Mr. Maguire was pronounced dead on arrival at 7:35 a.m. at the Jersey Community hospital where he was moved in the Gubser ambulance. Mr. Maguire, whose home was 420 Short Street, was driving east on East Exchange Street and the train was traveling north. According to a report by patrolman Ralph R. Pickett of the Jerseyville Police Department who investigated the accident, the Maguire car was hit in the right center side and shoved off the track into the ditch at the east side of the track. T. N. Tennil, train engineer, told the officer he blew the whistle but the car never moved. Final rites for Mr. Maguire were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. Leonard Todd of Midway officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation hours were held at the Funeral Home. Mr. Maguire was a son of the late William and Lucy Clark Maguire and was born in Jersey County September 12, 1887. His age at death was 81 years, 9 months, and 7 days. He was married to Miss Bertha Busch on August 16, 1917, and the couple engaged in farming in Otter Creek until 1958 when they retired and moved to Jerseyville to make their home. Surviving him in addition to his wife, are one son, Ralph L. Maguire of Route One, Alton, three daughters, Mrs. Elmer (Maurita) Harbour of Rosewood Heights, Mrs. Everett (Verna) Van Tassel of Godfrey, and Mrs. Harry (Rowena) McIntire of New Orleans, Louisiana, seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, two brothers, Asa Maguire of Alton and Claude Maguire, a member of the Jerseyville police force, and one sister, Mrs. John Collins of Jerseyville.

Former resident of Jerseyville, died at his home in Salina, Kansas, January 1, brought to Jerseyville, funeral from St. Francis church, burial in St. Francis cemetery. Rev. Francis Shields. Brother-in-law of Patrick Burns of Jerseyville.

MAI. Jerseyville Republican, January 31, 1924. Clement T. Mai died at home on North Washington 78 years, leaves wife. Mai born in Wurtemberg, Germany to US in the 1860s. Earlier part of young manhood on the sea. On board he was a baker. After coming to Jersey, he worked in local bakeries. Member of Knights of Columbus and Holy Ghost church. Funeral from Holy Ghost church, Rev. John Gramke, burial St. Mary’s cemetery.
MAIN. Grafton. Richard Edward Main, 80, died at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 8, 1989, at Jersey Community hospital. Main was a commercial fisherman in the Grafton area. He was born in Alton, son of the late Richard R. and Sarah (Jones) Main. His first wife, the Former Olivia Wahl, died July 14, 1935. He later married the former Clema Thorn, and she died November 23, 1948. Surviving are six daughters, Doris Wallace and Romana Highfill, both of Jerseyville, Joyce Brooks and Carol Walsh, both of Brighton, Bonnie Terrell of Grafton and Debrah Barber of Golden Eagle; four sons, James Main of Kemp, Texas, Paul Main of Grafton, Gerald Main of East Alton and Pete Main of Jerseyville; 46 grandchildren; and 25 step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four grandchildren and eight brothers and sisters. Visitation is 4-9 p.m. Friday with services at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Burial will be in Scenic Hill cemetery in Grafton. Memorials may be made to Grafton Senior Citizens or Jersey Care Center, Jerseyville.
MAIN. Jersey Coutny News, March 24, 1927 Eads Andrew Main, son of Richard and Sarah Main, born at Pearl, Illinois August 21, 1905 and died March 15, 1927, aged 21 years. Married May 1, 1923 to Miss Bessie Kirkpatrick, who with a daughter survive him, also his father, four sisters, Mrs. Cecil Jergins of Francis, Oklahoma, Mrs. Eva Contine of St. Louis, Mrs. Viola Baker of Alton, Mrs. Eric Curry of Grafton; four brothers, Edward and William of Grafton, Dewey and Lonnie of Alton. Funeral at Hartford church with Rev. C. J. Struebing. Burial in Hartford cemetery.
MAINS. Died 00-01-1971. Funeral services for Mrs. Amy A. Mains, 79, of this city were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the First Baptist church in Jerseyville with Rev. Carlton Christenson officiating. Her death occurred at Waters Nursing Home at 5:30 p.m. Friday. She had been in ill health for some time. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. She was born January 5, 1892 in Jersey County the daughter of Alfred and Eliza Illger Morgan. Her husband was the late Floyd F. Mains. Mrs. Mains was a member of the First Baptist church and the Home Bureau. She is survived by two daughters , Mrs. Charles (Doris) Henson of Jerseyville and Mrs. W. E. (Ethelwynne) Wise of Columbus, Ohio; three grandsons; two sisters, Mrs. Asa Beckner of Jerseyville and Mrs. Fred Lanham of Newark, Delaware. Her husband, one son, parents and two sisters preceded her in death. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home. The family designated the Baptist church building fund as a memorial.
MAINS. Died 15-10-1950. Funeral services for Andrew J. Mains, 83-year-old retired farmer, were held Sunday afternoon October 15, at two o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Reverend Gerald Grotey, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiated and interment was in the Jalappa cemetery. The death of Mr. Mains occurred Friday afternoon, October 13, at two-twenty o’clock at the Watson Nursing Home. The decedent was a son of the late Houston and Jonna Class Mains and was born in Jersey County on September 7, 1867. His age at the time of death was eighty-three years, one month and six days. The aged man is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Frank Martin of Jerseyville and Mrs. Anna Handling of Ottumwa, Iowa; one son Stephen D. Mains of Tompkins cove, New York; ten grandchildren; one brother, Thomas Mains of Jerseyville and three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Grizzle and Mrs. Bertha Spears of Jerseyville and Mrs. Iva Daniels of Kane. His wife, one son, Bartlett, and one daughter, Izola, preceded him in death.

Her death occurred at10:30 o’clock on May 13 at Jersey Community hospital. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Born April 20, 1909 in Jersey County, she was the daughter of James F. and Stella Davis Mains. She is survived by three Brothers, Kenneth and Clinton of Kane and James of Medora; and four sisters, Mrs. Edith Gilworth of Kane, Miss Wanda Mains of Jerseyville, Mrs. Ruth Mohrman of Tracy, California, and Mrs. Bernice Key of Florissant, Missouri; two nieces; one nephew; and seven great-nieces and nephews. MAINS. Died 10-06-1883. From Jersey County Democrat June 1883. Elizabeth, wife of Freeman J. Mains 42 years died. The record of most lives is better left unwritten; the record of her life is written indelibly in the hearts of her children, the good will and affection of her friends, and neighbors. Having inherited a feeble constitution, she suffered often and severely. Living in a community where good, strong common sense is not polished away by over refinement, and where religious advantages were few, from the very first of her coming among us nearly a quarter century ago until the day she closed her eyes in their last slumber, she was the acknowledged leader in every good work. Did the Macoupin overflow, and drive those living along its banks out on high land for shelter, her house was always open to the homeless, her voice always raised in words of welcome. In her house the weary, foot sore traveler found food and shelter and cheerful words.
MAINS. Died 20-12-1953. Mrs. Ella Mains, eighty-seven year old resident of Fidelity, died Sunday evening, December 20, at ten o’clock at her home. She was the widow of George Mains. The aged woman was a daughter of the late Wesley and Susan Carter Hunter and was born March 8, 1866 in Jersey County. Her age at the time of death was eighty-seven years, nine months and twelve days. Mrs. Mains is survived by two sons, Fred Downs of Medora and Hearshal Mains of Fidelity; one step son, Frank Downs of Brighton, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. The decedent was a member of the Fidelity Baptist church where services will be held Wednesday afternoon, December 23, at 1:30 o’clock. Reverend William Greer of Carlinville will officiate and interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call at her home in Fidelity.
MAINS. Died 02-04-1956. Floyd R. Mains, retired farmer, died Monday. Death occurred at hospital after brief illness. Funeral services today (Thursday). Floyd R. Mains, well-known retired farmer of Jerseyville, died at six twenty-five o’clock Monday evening, April 2, following a brief illness. Although he had not felt too well the past few days Mr. Mains had made a trip to Carlinville Monday morning and had visited the local business district in the afternoon. Later in the day he was stricken with a heart attack and was moved in the Jacoby ambulance to the Jersey Community hospital about four-thirty o’clock. His death occurred two hours later. The decedent was born and reared in Jersey County where he has always resided. He was a son of Warren Mains and the late Nona Grizzle Mains, and was born March 8, 1896. His age at the time of death was sixty years and twenty-four days. Mr. Mains is survived by his wife, Mrs. Amy A. Mains; two daughters, Mrs. W. E. Wise of St. Louis and Mrs. Charles Henson of Jerseyville; two grandsons, Donald and Jay Wise of St. Louis, his father, Warren Mains of Jerseyville; one half-brother, Paul Mains of Rapid City, South Dakota; and two half-sisters, Mrs. Norman Eames of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Mrs. W. D. Ross of Tracey, California. He was preceded in death by one son, Gene Freeman Mains. Mr. and Mrs. Mains had resided in Jerseyville since his retirement from the farm five years ago. He was a veteran of World War I. Mr. Mains was a member of the First Baptist church in Jerseyville and he was also affiliated with the Jerseyville Masonic Lodge, No. 394, and the Scottish Rites Body of East St. Louis. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Funeral services are being held this (Thursday) afternoon at the Baptist church with the pastor, Rev. Carl C. Moman officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery where committal services will be under the auspices of the local Masonic Lodge.
MAINS. From Jersey County Democrat September, 1907. Free J. Mains, born in Benton County, Missouri, February 7, 1836. Was the 5th of 12 children born to James and Abigal (Parker) Mains. Two brothers and 1 sister survive him: Huston R. Truman R., and Eliza, wife of David Long. Married November 24, 1859 to Elizabeth Stevens. Ten children born to them; six Living: Lucy, Wife of Thos. Wylder, William T., Warren, Tina, wife of E. B. Brown; James R. and Tossie. Those deceased are Ora, Bobbie, and two who died in infancy. Mrs. Mains died June 10, 1883. He married Mrs. Malinda (Witt) Valentine, November 25, 1885. He was one of prominent men of county. Leaves wife, 6 children, two brothers, a sister, 16 grandchildren, two step-sons and four step-grandchildren. Funeral from residence, one of largest ever held in county. Rev. Wm. Rhoads and Rev. J. B. Ravenscroft. Pall bearers were Col. W. Fulkerson, S. H. Bowman, Elias Cockrell, A. M. Slaten, T. S. Chapman, Oscar Tollman.
MAINS. Died 17-04-1977. Services for Hearshal Mains, 78, a retired carpenter of Fidelity will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on April 20 at the Church of Christ with Jack D. Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. His death occurred at 8 p.m. on April 17 at Lakeview Manor Nursing Home in Carlinville. A World War II veteran, he was born in Jersey County on November 4, 1896, a son of George and Ella hunter Mains. His survivors are eight step-children, Loran, Neil, Wayne, Wilbur, Gerald, and Leo Hendrickson, Mrs. Ruby Bockover and Mrs. Pearl Bockover, All of Fort Dodge, Iowa, nieces and nephews. MAINS. Died 30-01-1978. Kenneth “Nip” Mains, 74, a farmer of Route 1, Kane died at 6:45 a.m. on January 30 at his home after an extended illness. He was born December 10, 1903 in Jersey County, a son of James F. and Stella Davis Mains. He was a member of the Jerseyville Moose Lodge. His survivors are four sisters, Mrs. Edith Gilworth of Kane, Mrs. Ruth Mohrman of Tracy, California, Mrs. Bernice Foeller of Florissant, Missouri and Wanda Mains of Jerseyville; two brothers, James Mains of Medora and Clinton Mains of Jerseyville. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Robert and a Sister, Edna. The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on February 1 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville with the Rev. Earl Clagg officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. Friends may call at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville after 4 p.m. Tuesday. Her death occurred on may 12 at the Boyd Memorial hospital in Carrollton. Interment was in the Oak Grove cemetery. She was born February 3, 1890 in Hagaman and was the daughter of John and Angelina Henderson Smith. Her survivors are her husband, Hearshal Mains of Fidelity; six Sons, Loran, Wilbur, and Neal Hendrickson of Ft. Dodge, Iowa, Leo and Charles of Sommers, Iowa, and Wayne Hendrickson of Badger, Iowa; and two daughters, Mrs. Harry (Ruby) Bockover and Mrs. Virgil (Pearl) Bockover of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; 46 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.
MAINS. Died 08-02-1950. Mrs. Rose Anna H. Mains, seventy-eight year old Jerseyville resident, died Wednesday afternoon at her home on Stryker Avenue following a period of ill health. Mrs. Mains was a daughter of the late Edward and Mary Jane Mc Dermott McGowen, natives of Ireland, and was born in Jersey County on August 5, 1781 (1881). She was aged seventy-eight years, six months and three days. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Elmer Dower of Jacksonville, Mrs. Adrian Green of Jerseyville, Mrs. Myrtle Bridges of Pendlenton, Oregon, Mrs. Clarence Greeling of Godfrey and Mrs. Lawrence Hoffman of Roxana, and one sister, Mrs. Isabella Bittel of Jerseyville. Mrs. Mains also leaves eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at St. Francis Xavier church Saturday morning, February 11 at nine-thirty o’clock. MAINS. Died 16-05-1951. Thomas Marion Mains of this city died Wednesday morning, May 16 at nine o’clock at the Watson Nursing Home. He was a son of the late Houston and Joana Glass Mains and was born in Jersey County, May 19, 1872. His age at time of death was seventy-eight years, eleven months and twenty-seven days. Mr. Mains was a retired laborer. The decedent is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Grizzle and Mrs. Bertha Spears of Jerseyville and Mrs. Ida Daniels of Kane. The body is at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where friends may call. Funeral services will be held at the Church of Christ Friday afternoon, May 18, at three o’clock, Thomas G. Roady of Kane will officiate and interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery.
MAIR. May W. Mair, 76, of Alton was pronounced dead at 12:15 p.m. Thursday at her residence following a lengthy illness. She was born in Grafton, a daughter of the late William H. and Edna (Porter) Westbrook and married Walter Mair, who died about 30 years ago. Surviving are her step-mother, Edna Trump of Los Vegas, Nevada; four sisters, Elizabeth Hellrung of Alton, Judith Cuno of Los Vegas, Nevada, Eva Stevenson of Alton and Nancy Corrington of Cottage Hills. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Gent Funeral Home where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Fred Beck officiating. MAJOR. Died 16-07-1988. Gregory Gerard Major, 27, of Alton, formerly of Jerseyville, died unexpectedly at 8:17 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 1988 at Jerseyville Community hospital in Jerseyville. Major was a clerk for Major’s News and Tobacco Shoppe in Alton. Born in Jerseyville, he was the son of Amos R. “Bing” and Mary T. (Kallal) Major of Jerseyville. In addition to his parents, surviving are two brothers, Lawrence Major of Coral Gables, Florida and Thomas Major of Troy; and two Sisters, Beverly D. Major of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Joan Major of Glen Carbon. Visitation begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic church in Jerseyville. A funeral mass will be celebrated there at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Henry Schmidt as celebrant. Burial will be private. Memorials may be given to St. Francis Catholic school in Jerseyville. MALIK. Died 23-11-1976. Funeral mass for Fred C. Malik, 85, of 909 Walnut Street, Jerseyville, was celebrated Friday morning, November 26, at St. Francis Xavier church with Father R. T. Shea celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis Xavier cemetery. His death occurred at 7 a.m. on November 23 at Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton. A baker, he was born September 10, 1891 in Slavicin, Czechoslovakia, a son of Anton and Antionette Vrba Malik. His survivors are his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Malik; two daughters, Mrs. John R. (Anna Marie) Walsh of Jerseyville and Mrs. Ray L. (Elizabeth Josephine) Edwards of Granite City; one grandson; a sister, Marie Latinakova, Czechoslovakia; nieces and nephews. MALLETT. Died 25-09-1968. Edgar Elza Mallett, of Rural Route, Fieldon, machinery operator for the Nutwood Levee and Drainage District, died Wednesday, September 25, at John Cochran Veterans hospital in St. Louis where he had been a patient for twenty-four days. Rev. Randy Morris of Grafton officiated at final rites held for Mr. Mallett at Rosedale Methodist church on Saturday afternoon at two o’clock. Interment was in the Rosedale cemetery. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where Masonic rites were conducted at 8 o’clock Friday evening by Fieldon Lodge No. 592, AF & AM, followed by services by Jerseyville Chapter No. 656 Order of Eastern Star with which Mr. Mallett was affiliated. Mr. Mallett was a son of Mrs. Louise Blasa Mallett and the late Arthur Mallett and was born September 20, 1908 in Jersey County. His death occurred five days after his sixtieth birthday anniversary. Mr. Mallett was a veteran of World War II. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Frances L. Mallett, his mother, and one sister, Mrs. Bernice Daigger, all of Fieldon. He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, Arthur, Jr., and one sister, Birdie Marie.

She died at 7:20 a.m. September 22, at Jersey Community hospital. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Bernice) Daigger, of Route 1, Fieldon, six grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Anna Sears, Jerseyville, and Lena Vinson, Dow and one brother, Fred Blasa, Jerseyville. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons and a daughter.
MALLEY. Ronald Lee Malley, 54, died at 9:30 p.m. Friday, June 26, 1992, at Jersey Community hospital. He worked at East Alton Water Co. for 14 years. Born in Mounds on August 8, 1937, he was a son of Pearl Marie Amlley of East Alton and the late John Malley, Jr. He married the former Vonita Murrell on February 11, 1967, in Houston, Texas. She survives. In addition to his wife and mother, surviving are four sons, John Edward Malley of Fieldon, Michael Lee Malley of Kampsville, and Lonnie Ray and Patrick Eugene Malley, Both of Houston; three daughters, Brenda Sue Smith of Jerseyville, Beverly Jean Lyons and Carolyn Sue Garza, Both of Houston ; 14 grandchildren; two brothers, Dayne Ray Malley of Houston and John allen Malley of East Alton; and a Sister Debra Sue Robinson of Alamo Heights, Texas. Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at Jacoby-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Gene Jackson will officiate. Burial is in Fieldon cemetery.

MALLOY. Died 22-06-1965. Charles Hugh Malloy, lifelong Jersey County resident, was found dead at his home, 200 East Prairie Street, Tuesday morning, June 22 around 9:15 A.m. Bob Sweeney who had gone to see Mr. Malloy looked through the locked screen door and could see him lying on the bed. After he failed to arouse him, he notified the police. Sheriff Paul Miller, Deputy Hargiss Maholland, and Captain Ed Henson went to the residence where they found Mr. Malloy dead. The time of death was established as 1:00 a.m. Mr. Malloy was born in Jerseyville October 5, 1884, the son of the late Henry and Annie Burns Malloy. His age at the time of death was 80 years, 8 months, and 17 days. During his life he had been a grocer clerk. His survivors are two sons, Robert O. Malloy and Gerald Malloy of Jerseyville, seven grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday morning, June 25, at 9:30 o’clock at St. Francis Xavier’s church in this city, with Rev. Father Roger Simpson celebrant of the requiem mass. MALLOY. Died 25-06-1907. The death of Patrick Malloy, formerly a well known farmer of the Paradise vicinity, Jersey County, occurred at his home in Chicago June 25, according to advices received by friends in this village. Mr. Malloy had been in usual health until five days before his death. He was stricken with paralysis and did not regain consciousness. Mr. and Mrs. Malloy moved several months ago to Chicago, where their adopted son, James Malloy, is a postoffice employee. The deceased was about 65 years old. His demise will be deeply regretted by many friends in Jersey County. Medora Messenger. Dated July 1907.
MALLOY. Died 19-06-1981. A funeral mass for Robert O. Malloy, 69, 1134 Warren St., Jerseyville, was celebrated Monday morning at Holy Ghost church with Father William Hembrow celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis Xavier cemetery. He died at 3:30 a.m. June 19 at his home. He had been in ill health for an extended time. Born January 22, 1912 in Jerseyville, he was the son of Charles and Nellie Gerson Malloy and was formerly a foreman at Olin Corp. Malloy was a member of the Holy Ghost church, Knights of Columbus, and Lions Club. His survivors are his wife, the former Lena Ritter whom he married in 1933; four Sons, Robert Malloy and Jim Malloy, Jerseyville, Charles Malloy, Litchfield, and Tom Malloy, Altus, Oklahoma; one daughter Sharon Shanks, Jerseyville; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Gerald Malloy of Jerseyville. His parents, one son and a brother preceded him in death. The rosary was recited Sunday evening at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Holy Ghost church has been named as a memorial. MALONE. Died 19-12-1981. Dennis R. Malone, 23, Route 3, Jerseyville was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident at 8:30 December 19, three miles south of Jerseyville on Route 267. Malone was born February 1, 1958 in Jerseyville, the son of Dannie and Doris Pickett Malone. He was assistant caster at the Olin Corporation. He is survived by his parents and grandmother, olive Hickmna of Jerseyville. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, December 21 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. R. E. George officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. The United Methodist church has been designated as a memorial. Dated 12-22-81.
MALONE. Died 16-04-1987. Doris Jean Malone, 49, of Jerseyville died April 16 at Christian hospital northeast. She was born September 21, 1937, in Greene County to the Late Ralph R. Sr. and Edna (Ford) Pickett. She married Dannie Ray Malone on January 29, 1955, in Jerseyville. She worked at Wal-mart. Survivors include her husband, Dannie Ray Malone, of Jerseyville,; sisters Betty Burch of Carrollton and Ann Marshall of Grafton; and Brothers Ralph R. Pickett, Jr. and Dellas Gilbert. Visitation was April 17 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The funeral was April 18 there with the Rev. R. E. George officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Born in Greene County November 24, 1918, he was a son of Edward and Josephine Kraushaar Maltimore. Maltimore was employed at Laclede Steel and was a World War II veteran. His survivors are his wife, Evelyn; his mother, three Sons, Gilbert of Greenfield, Howard of Fieldon and Larry of Alton; three Daughters, Mary Lou Baker and Carrie Stephens of Jerseyville and Linda Pilger of Godfrey; one brother, Perry of Jerseyville; three Sisters, Mary Foster and Bonita Sherman, both of Jerseyville and Opal Kruckerburg of Godfrey; 10 grandchildren. MALTIMORE. Died 25-11-1979. Josephine Maltimore, 78, of 208 Kenwood Jerseyville died at 3:45 a.m. November 25 at the daughter’s home in Godfrey. She was born June 8, 1901 in Calhoun County, the daughter of Joseph and Christine Martin Kraushaar. She married Edward Maltimore and he died may 14,1959. MALTIMORE. Died 17-02-1948. Mrs. Minnie Maltimore, 81, a former resident of Jerseyville, died Tuesday, February 17, in a nursing home in Pekin. The body was brought to Jerseyville and funeral services will be held Friday afternoon, February 20, at two o’clock in the Gubser Funeral Home. Rev. David B. Maxton, pastor of the Presbyterian church will officiate at the rites and interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs. Maltimore was the daughter of the Late Brazillia and Mary Baird Thatcher and was born in Jerseyville November 12, 1866. She was a graduate of the old Jerseyville high school and later attended university. She resided in Chicago until about ten years ago when she moved to Rockford. For the past six months she had made her home in Pekin. The decedent was the widow of Robert Maltimore. Mrs. Maltimore’s only survivor is a niece, Mrs. Ray Whittiker of Peru, Illinois. His death occurred on June 13 at Greenwood Manor. Interment was in Fieldon cemetery. He was born may 14, 1921 in Jerseyville, a son of Edward and Josephine Kraushaar Maltimore. He was engaged in maintenance work. His survivors include his wife, Mrs. Alberta Hunter Maltimore; his mother; stepsons, Carl of Dow, Leon and Junior of Brighton, Michael, Frank, Larry, Jerry, Bruce, Mark and David Price of Jerseyville; stepdaughters, Mrs. Sam (Sharon) Woodring, Mrs. Gilbert (Evelyn) Morris of Jerseyville; Mrs. George (Marcella) Branham of Dow; Janet and Ruth Price of Sterling; 25 grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph Maltimore of Otterville and Perry Maltimore of Jerseyville; and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Pressley and Mrs.wendell (Bonita) Sherman of Jerseyville and Mrs. Leo (Opal) Kruckeberg of Godfrey. Visitation was held at the Funeral Home. Dated 06-20-1974.
MALTIMORE. Loretta Lee Maltimore, 61, died at 1:09 a.m. today February 4, 1988 at St. Anthony’s hospital in Alton. Born in Jersey County, she was the daughter of the Late Henry and Myrtle (Guess) Stevens. On November 1, 1955 she married Perry Maltimore in Kane, and he survives. Also surviving are a son, Perky Maltimore of Jerseyville; a grandchild; a Brother, Porter Stevens of Kane; and a half Brother, Richard Sturman of Granite City. She was preceded in death by a son, a sister and two half-brothers. Visitation will be 4-9 p.m. Friday and until noon Saturday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home in Jerseyville from noon until time of services at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, visitation will continue at the First Southern Baptist church in Jerseyville. The Rev. Ron Woodrm will officiate. Burial will be in Kane cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church, where Mrs. Maltimore had been a member.
MANDORCA. Jersey County news, Thursday, July 7, 1927. Mrs. Mary Mandorca, aged 93 years, died Monday morning at 8:00 o’clock at the home of her son, John Mandorca, at Newbern. The deceased had been a resident of the Newbern vicinity for the past 65 years. She had been in failing health for the past year, but had not been confined to her bed until a week ago. She is survived by four daughters; Mrs. Loyd Dodson and Mrs. Charles Levi, of Alton, Mrs. William Darr, of Dow, and Mrs. Sophia Clark, of Wichita Kansas; two sons, William and John Darr, of Newbern; a sister, Mrs. Susan Alexander, also thirty grandchildren and twenty-seven great grandchildren. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the Cumberland Presbyterian church at Newbern, Rev. A. G. Hedger officiating. Interment was in the Newbern cemetery.

Born in Germany near Frankfort, on the Rhine, August 14, 1801 and came to this country and settled on Hawkins Prairie in 1867. Leaves 13 grandchildren and one daughter.
MANN. Died 16-06-1980. Services were conducted Wednesday morning at Marks Mortuary in Wood River for Florence Mann, 69, of 310 Smith St., East Alton, with burial in Franklin cemetery, Franklin. She died at 1 a.m. June 16 at Wood River township hospital. She was a retired waitress in the Wood River area and the daughter of the late Emery and Minnie Jolly Mann. Her survivors are an aunt and two cousins.

MANNING. Died 27-09-1952. Howard Manning, retired Jerseyville businessman and former state legislator, died Saturday afternoon, September 27, at two-thirty o’clock at St. Mary’s hospital in St. Louis of injuries suffered Friday afternoon in an automobile-truck accident near Edwardsville. Death occurred several hours after he had submitted to emergency surgery for head injuries at St. Mary’s hospital. Following the accident Mr. Manning was moved by ambulance to the Wood River township hospital and was later taken to the hospital where his death occurred. The Jerseyville man was enroute to Edwardsville to play golf with Maurice Fruit of that city, former Jerseyville resident, when he automobile figured in a collision with an oil truck driven by Francis J. Zeller of Greenville at the intersection of State Routes159 and 112, just north of the Edwardsville city limits. The truck was owned by A. J. Mettler of Sorento and was loaded with oil for a road oiling project. Zeller was unhurt. Manning had been active in business, civic, and political affairs since his return to Jerseyville about twenty years ago. For sixteen years he had been engaged in the poultry business with his brother, Lee Manning, carrying on the firm that was formerly operated by the men’s father & the late William P. Richards. A few years ago the Manning brothers disposed of this business to Brown Produce Company. Since that time Howard Manning has devoted considerable time to an invention in the poultry equipment field, and to his farming interests in this area. Politically Manning was a staunch member of the Democrat party and served as representative in the Illinois legislature from the thirty-eighth district following his election in 1937. He had also served as chairman of the Jersey County Democratic Central Committee. Mr. Manning was a member of the Jerseyville Presbyterian church and fraternally was affiliated with the Jerseyville Lions Club and Elks Lodge. The deceased was a son of the late William M. and Charlotte Leigh Manning and was born on August 9, 1901. His age at time of death was fifty-one years, one month and eighteen days. Mr. Manning was educated in the Jerseyville schools, attended college at Lake Forrest, Illinois, and was graduated from Washington University in St. Louis where he received his degree in commerce and finance. After completing his education he held a position with Purina Mills before returning to Jerseyville to engage in business. Surviving Mr. Manning are his wife, Mrs. Therese Hospes Manning, one brother, Lee Manning, one sister, Mrs. Arthur Thatcher, and his step-mother, Mrs. William Manning, all of this city. Final rites were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home Tuesday afternoon, September 30, at two o’clock with Rev. M. Edwards Breed, pastor of the Presbyterian church officiating. Entombment was in Valhalla Chapel of Memories.
MANNING. Died 00-03-1979. Services for Lee N. Manning, 79, of 503 N. State, Jerseyville were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First United Presbyterian church with the Rev. M. Edwards Breed officiating. He died at 10:30 p.m. Monday at Jersey Community hospital. Manning was first engaged in the poultry business in Medora, then returned to Jerseyville to be associated with his father, William M. Manning in Manning & Manning Poultry and Seed Co. After his father’s death he continued to operate the business which consisted of a chain of poultry and feed companies in this part of Illinois, for many years. His brother, Howard, joined him as his partner in the business until 1945 when they sold to the Brown Produce Co., and Lee retired. During retirement he owned and managed several farms in the area. He was born January 27, 1900 in Jerseyville, a son of William M. and Charlotte Leigh Manning. Manning was a member of the First Presbyterian church and a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Etha Thatcher of Jerseyville, nieces and nephews. His wife the Former Lelia R. Clampitt, died December 24, 1976. MANNING. Died 24-12-1976. Services for Mrs. Lelia R. Manning, 77 of 503 N. State Street, Jerseyville were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian church with the Rev. M. Edwards Breed officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Her death occurred at 12:06 a.m. on December 24 at Greenwood Manor. Mrs. Manning was a member of the First Presbyterian church and Order of Eastern Star, Jerseyville. She was born August 9, 1899 in Medora, a daughter of Samuel R. and Melissa Kennedy Clampitt. She married Lee n. Manning on July 21, 1921. She is survived by her husband, nieces and nephews.

Funeral rites were conducted from Burke Funeral Home in Grafton Friday morning at 10:00 o’clock for Mrs. Lola Manning, who passed away at 4:00 am. on December 16 in Garden Grove, California, where she resided with her husband, Robert L. Manning. Visitation was from 9 to 10 a.m. and services were conducted by Father Patrick Morrow with Mrs. Wm. Q. Smith playing organ music. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery. Mrs. Manning was 53 years of age at the time of her death. She had been sick only a short time. Her husband is the brother of Bruce Manning of Grafton, and is a retired Navy officer who is employed as a railroad engineer at the present time. Dated 12-24-1970.
MANSELL. Died 00-01-1970. Mrs. Esther F. Sidwell Mansell of Phoenix, Arizona, a former resident of Jerseyville, died early Friday morning in a hospital in that city following a period of ill health. Word of her death was received here Friday by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Ted Ringhausen. Final rites were held at the Mercer Funeral Home in Phoenix Monday afternoon at two o’clock and burial was in Phoenix. Mrs. James Hubbard of Florissant, Missouri, the former Miss Carol Ringhausen of Jerseyville, flew to Phoenix Saturday to attend the funeral of her aunt. Mrs. Mansell, 60, was the daughter of the late Mrs. and Mrs. A. D. Fowler who were residents of Jerseyville. She formerly taught in a rural school in the Fieldon area and in a beauty school in Alton. Surviving are her husband, Glenn Mansell of Phoenix, one . . . dated 1/12/70.

Funeral services for Charles Maples of Jerseyville, whose death occurred Friday, April 27, at 2:55 p.m. in Alton, were held Sunday afternoon April 29, at two o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. M. Edwards Breed, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, officiated and interment was in the Grimes cemetery. Mr. Maples was a son of the late James and Catherine Quinn Maples and was born in Jersey County on May 16, 1877. His age at the time of death was seventy-eight years, eleven months and eleven days. Mr. Maples was a retired farm worker. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. William Baldridge of Alton, four granddaughters, and one sister, Mrs. Catherine cope of Jerseyville. Dated 1956.

Funeral services for James Maple, life-long resident of Jerseyville, were held at St. Francis Xavier church in this city Monday morning, April 2, on the eighty-eighth anniversary of the decedent’s birth. Requiem mass was celebrated by father John J. Clancy and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs. Maple was born April 2, 1868, a son of the late James and Catherine Quinn Maple. He was a retired farmer. His wife, Mrs. Mary Ellen Maple, preceded him in death. MAPLE. Died 11-06-1954. Funeral rites were held at St. Peter and Paul’s church in Alton, Monday morning June 14, at eight o’clock for Mrs. Lillian Maple of Alton, a former resident of Jerseyville. Burial was in St. Patrick’s cemetery. The death of Mrs. Maple occurred Friday, June 11, at Barnes hospital in St. Louis where he had been a patient since may 15. She had been in ill health since October, 1953. The decedent was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John McCann. She was married in 1905 in St. Louis to William Maple whose death occurred in 1942. Mrs. Maple moved with her family from Jerseyville to Alton in 1911. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Military Order of Lady Bugs, D.A.R. and St. Peter and Paul’s church. She is survived by two sons, James douglas and Louis Edward Maple, and three daughters, Mrs. Victor Abel, Mrs. Francis Landre and Mrs. Robert McBride. She also leaves thirty grandchildren, five great grandchildren, one brother, John McCann of Springfield and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Kogel of Godfrey. Mrs. Maple was preceded in death by two children, Richard and Mrs. Lucille Melton. Dated 6/17/1954.
MAPLE. Died 08-02-1947. Mrs. Lillian E. Maple, operator of the telephone exchange at Kemper for a number of years, died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon February 8, at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mrs. and Mrs. Laverne L. Parrish in Alton. Mrs. Maple had been in ill health for more than a year and was spending the winter months in Alton at the Parrish home. She complained of a pain in her chest and her death occurred within a few minutes. Mrs. Maple was born at Adrian, Missouri. She was married to Clarence Maple and the family resided at Peoria for a few years. In 1928 they moved to Kemper to live. The death of Mr. Maple occurred a few months later and Mrs. Maple became telephone operator for the Kemper Cooperative Exchange. She continued the work until last fall. Mrs. Maple was sixty-six years old. Surviving her are five sons and five daughters, her aged father, Henry Baie, 94-year old resident of Adrian, and seventeen grandchildren. The children are Herman Maple of Peoria, Howard of Salem, Ohio, Homer, Clarence, and Kenneth Maple of Medora, Mrs. Helen Miller of Hardin, Mrs. Ruth Bragg of Kansas City, Mrs. Gladys Rives of Greenfield, Mrs. Marian Smith of Chenoa and Mrs. Jessie Parrish of Alton. Two sons preceded her in death. Surviving also are two Brothers, Henry Baie and Arvie Baie of Adrian, Missouri, and three sisters, Mrs. Ruby Hawkins of Adrian, Mrs. Louise Adams of Kansas City and Mrs. Minnie Rodman of Los Angeles. Funeral services were held at the Kemper Baptist church, Wednesday morning, February12, with Rev. Elmer Ballard of St. Louis officiating. The body was taken to Mapleton for services and burial was in the Mapleton cemetery. Dated February, 1947

MAPLES. Died 23-06-1921. From Jerseyville Republican, June 30, 1921. Mrs. Katherine Quinn Maples died at her home in this city on Harrison Street last Thursday morning at 6:30 o’clock, after a lingering illness. At the time of her death she was 71 years of age. Funeral services were conducted from St. Francis Xavier’s church Saturday morning at 9:00 o’clock. Solemn high mass was celebrated; Rev. J. J. Clancy celebrant. The deceased was born the 11th of August, 1850, and died the 23rd of June,1921. December 25th, 1867, she was united in marriage to James Maples. Fifteen children were born to this union. She is survived by her husband and seven children, Margaret Day of this city, Mary Peters of Summerfield, Illinois; James Maples, Charles Maples, Ellen Welch and Katie Cope of this city and William Maples of Alton. Six children died in infancy and John Maples and Carrie Campbell after they had reached maturity. She is survived by twenty-three grandchildren and twenty-nine great grandchildren. The interment took place in Oak Grove cemetery.

She was born near Kane, a daughter of the Late George and Luann Williams Witt and Married Dr. S. F. March who died April 28, 1957. MARGESON. Died 17-05-1974. Funeral services for Jesse Leon Margeson, 72, a resident in the Kane area for the past 30 years, were held Sunday afternoon, May 19, at hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. He died at 1:45 a.m. Friday, may 17, at the Boyd Memorial hospital where he had been a patient for the past four days. His death followed an extended illness. The Rev. Chester Sutton of Jerseyville officiated and interment was in the Jalappa cemetery near Kane. Mr. Margeson had worked at McDonnel-Douglas Aircraft in St. Louis for 13 years and also a retired farmer. He was born in Lawton, Iowa, January 12, 1902, the son of the late George and Eva Garlow Margeson. He married the former Hazel Daniels in 1922 in Maquoketa, Iowa. His survivors are his wife, Hazel; four daughters, Mrs. Leo (Lola) Abbott of Kane, Mrs. Garnett (Margaret) Lamb of Hamel, Mrs. Ronald (Joann) Byland, Carrollton, Mrs. L. W. (Joan) Brannan of Jacksonville; two sons Marvin of Jerseyville, and Darriell of Carrollton; 24 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one brother, Oley of Maquoketa, Iowa; and two sister, Mrs. Howard McCutcheon of Apache Junction, Arizona, and Mrs. Margaret Stevens of Monterey Park, California. His parents, two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Crull and Myrtle Margeson, one sister and five brothers preceded him in death. The American Cancer society has been designated as a memorial. Dated 5/23/74.

He was born July 7, 1957, in Granite City to Carroll Markovitch and Ruth Reynolds Markovitch. He worked out of Laborers’ Local 338 in Wood River. He was a member of Holy Ghost church in Jerseyville and the Jerseyville Jaycees. Survivors include his parents and brothers John and Joe of Jerseyville, Michael of San Angelo, Texas, and Bill of Santa Anna, California. Visitation and the rosary were May 3 in Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The funeral mass was May 4 in Holy Ghost church with the Rev. William Hembrow as celebrant. Burial was in Mount Gilead cemetery. A memorial has been established to Holy Ghost church. Dated May 15, 1985. Additional obituary: James E. Markovitch, 27, of Jerseyville was killed April 30 when the car he was driving went out of control, hit a ditch, spun in the air and exploded. He was pronounced dead at 10:45p.m. at the scene of the accident on Route 100 at Clifton Terrace Road in Madison County. Alone in the car, he had apparently applied the brakes before the crash to avoid hitting an animal, officials said. MARREN. Died 00-02-1983. A former Altonian, Virginia”jenny” Marren, 54, of Hazelwood, Missouri, died at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Christian hospital northeast. Born in Brighton, daughter of the late Frank and Alice Weese, she worked for Illinois Bell Telephone for 20 years and for McDonnel-Douglas for 10 years, where she worked in communications. She married Mark A. Marren in 1975, in St. Louis. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a Daughter, Sharon E. Craig of Alton; a son, William “Joey” Turnbough of Hazelwood, Missouri; and a grandson. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Ortmann Funeral Home, 9422 Lackland, Overland, Missouri, where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in St. Mary’s cemetery in Bridgeton, Missouri. Dated 2/23/1983.

Marsden, practicing physician and surgeon for fifty-one years, died unexpectedly at the family home, 200 North Liberty Street, at one-fifteen o’clock Saturday morning. He had not been ill and his death came as a complete shock to relatives and friends. Visitation hours were held at the Gubser Funeral Home from two o’clock Monday afternoon until twelve o’clock noon Tuesday when the body was moved to First Baptist church where services were held at two in the afternoon. Rev. Carlton Christenson officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. The family designated the heart fund as a memorial to the physician. Dr. Marsden, son of William Fredick and Anna Wemple Marsden, was born in Hebron, Indiana, may 9, 1892, and would have been seventy-six years old his next birthday. He received his professional education at the Hahnemann Medical College in Chicago where he was graduated in 1917, and he served his internship there. The college later became Chicago Memorial hospital. After receiving his medical degree, the young physician did graduate work at Delee Laying-in hospital in Chicago. For health reasons, Dr. Marsden was not accepted for military service in World Wars I or II, but during the latter he served on the Selective Service Board. He practiced for a short time at Monticello, and came to Jerseyville in October, 1918, where he continued his practice until his death early Saturday morning. In 1929, Dr. Marsden purchased the residence of the late Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Butler in Jerseyville, and established a small private hospital which he operated until 1947. The family continued to make their home in the residence and the doctor retained his offices there. In the 17 1/2 years that the hospital was in operation, the physician delivered 480 babies, and in his more than half a century of medical practice he had attended approximately 2484 childbirths. He found great satisfaction in the knowledge that in all of the deliveries he had never lost a mother. Dr. Marsden’s fraternal organizations were the Masonic and Odd Fellow Lodges and he had served two terms on a local school board. The physician was a member of the First Baptist church where his funeral was held. Dr. Marsden is survived by his wife, Augusta Genevieve Teske Marsden to whom he was married in September, 1916; a son, Bertram A. Marsden, Jr. of Jerseyville; three daughters, Mrs. Beatrice Naylor of this city; Mrs. Lawrence (helen) witzke and Mrs. Charles (Marguerite)ehlke of Appleton, Wisconsin; eight grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Walter (Fern) Hough of Winchester, Virginia, and one brother, Arthur Marsden of Villa Park.

Funeral services for Mrs. Leone Ardella Marsh, a native of Jersey County whose death occurred Saturday, June 12, at Old Faith hospital in St. Louis, were held Tuesday afternoon June 15, at two o’clock at the Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev. John T. Lillard, pastor of the Holy Cross Episcopal church, officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs. Marsh was a daughter of the late John T. and Ardella Lamb Marsh, and was born in Jersey County, November 15, 1889. Her age at the time of death was sixty-four years, six months, and twenty seven days. She was engaged in secretarial work prior to her illness but had been hospitalized for the past three and one-half months. Surviving the deceased are one sister, Mrs. Paul Mattice of Seattle, Washington, and four cousins, Adrian and Milton Lamb of St. Louis, John Fox of St. Louis and Stewart Fox of St. Augustine, Florida. Miss Marshall was born December 21, 1914 at Carrollton, the daughter of William E. and Julia Varble Marshall. She died at 2:45 p.m. June 26, at Jersey Community hospital. She was a stitcher for a shoe company in St. Louis, Missouri. She is survived by one sister, Ruth Westbrook of Jerseyville and two nieces, Pearl Brown of Alton and Billie Ogden, Godfrey.she was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers. Marshall, 74, of 2227 Oak Lane, Gary, Indiana, were held on April 16 at the Kuiper Funeral Home in Highland, Indiana with burial in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. Marshall, a former Jerseyville resident, died while enroute to a hospital. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Leda Marshall of Grafton; his widow, Verna; four daughters, Mrs. Paul (Dolores) Atteberry of Jerseyville, Mrs. Carl (Lois) Rodgers of Laporte, Indiana, Mrs. Flois Shackles and Mrs. Donna Jansen, both of Gary; 13 grandchildren; four brothers, Ira and Fred Marshall, both of Jerseyville, Elmer and Edward Marshall, both of Grafton, and three sisters, Mrs. Alma Pyle of Grafton, Mrs. Hiley Davis of Medora and Mrs. Dorothy Karr of Jerseyville. MARSHALL. Died 20-08-1987. Former Calhoun County resident Claude Marshall, 89, died August 20 at Deaconess Manor Nursing Home in St. Louis. He was born March 20, 1898, in Calhoun County to the late Frank and Zella (Baxter) Marshall. He married Sally Slaten on July 27, 1935, in St. Louis. He was a dealer representative for Ford Motor Tractor Co. Survivors include his wife, Sally, and daughter Betty Marshall, both of St. Louis. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Ida Randolph and Very La Marsh. Visitation was August 21 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Grafton; the funeral was August 22 there with the Rev. Mrs. Elizabeth MARSHALL, wife of Thomas Marshall, died in this city last Monday evening. She has been suffering from a cancer in the breast for several years, and about two months ago she went to Jacksonville and had it removed. Since that time she has been very low, the operation having affected her mind, and she has gradually grown worse till she died as stated. She was nearly 78 years of age and had many friends. She has been almost a mother to several children, which, in the kindness of her heart she reared an dies lamented by all. The funeral was preached by Rev. Cline yesterday at the Baptist church, of which organization she was a member, but had acquired a great regard for Mr. Cline during her sickness and therefore he was requested to preach her funeral sermon. MARSHALL. Died 31-07-1973. Funeral services will be held at St. Patrick’s church in Grafton at ten o’clock this (Thursday) morning for Mrs. Dorothy R. Marshall of St. Louis who formerly made her home in Grafton. Father Patrick Morrow will officiate and burial will be in Scenic Hill cemetery. The rosary was recited at seven o’clock Wednesday evening at Jacoby Funeral Home in Jerseyville where visitation was held. Mrs. Marshall was fatally stricken Tuesday morning as she was enroute to the office of her physician in Alton. She was moved to the hospital by ambulance. The former resident of Grafton was a daughter of the late George J. and Mary Ann Kellher Rippley, and was born in Grafton, April 19, 1892. Her husband, Robert H. Marshall, died in 1962. Surviving Mrs. Marshall are one daughter, Mrs. Fred (Virginia) Callahan of St. Louis; one grandchild; three great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Henry Thomas and Mrs. Edgar Seik of Grafton; and one brother, Robert Rippley of St. Louis. Mrs. Marshall was a member of St. Patrick’s parish in Grafton for seventy years and of late was a member of the parish of St. Casimirs in St. Louis. She was also a member the American Legion Auxiliary in Grafton and the Royal Neighbors of America. Dated 8/2/1973.

Marshall, 83, of rural Jerseyville who died at 5:50 p.m. March 21 at the Jerseyville Care Center. The Rev. R. E. George officiated. A farmer, he was born February 25, 1902 in Greene County to Leda Whitlock Marshall who survives and the late Edward Marshall. His survivors include his wife, the former Verna Watson whom he married on March 26, 1925 in Jerseyville, mother, Jerseyville; two sons, Marvin of Medora and Fred of Fieldon; daughters Marcella Meredith, Vivian Kadell and Freda Bock of Jerseyville and Sharon Frazier of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; brothers Ed of Jerseyville, Ira of Carlyle and Elmer of Grafton; two sisters, Alma Pyle and Dorothy Karr of Jerseyville; 19 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Alzheimers Disease and Related Disorders Assn. has been designated as the memorial. Dated May, 1985.

MARSHALL. Died 30-03-1986. Ira D. “Odd” Marshall, 74, died at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, March 30, 1986 at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville. Born in Eldred, he was a farmer and had been employed 24 years at Olin Corp. A son of the late Edward and Leda Belle (Huff) Marshall, he married the former Muriel Ferguson, who preceded him in death. He later married the former Christine Wayman, who survives. Also surviving are three Sons, Richard L. Marshall of Carlyle, Kenneth E. Marshall of Jerseyville and Martin D. Marshall of Wood River; one daughter, Carolyn Marshall of Grafton; one stepson, Chad Bell of Jerseyville; two step Daughters, Cheryl Wallace of Medora and Michele Bell of Jerseyville; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, L. Edward Marshall of Jerseyville and Elmer “Capp” Marshall of Grafton; and two sisters, Alma Pyle and Dorothy Karr, both of Jerseyville. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Joy Settles officiating. Burial will be in McDow cemetery in Otterville.

MARSHALL. Died 08-08-1987. Laura “Jerry” (Brooks) Marshall, 71, died at 6:14 p.m. Saturday August 8, 1987, at Saint Anthony’s hospital in Alton. She was born in Greene County, the daughter of Viola (Woolsey) Brooks of Jerseyville and the late Willis R. brooks. On December 15, 1934, in Carrollton, she married Kenneth Marshall, and he survives. In addition to her mother and husband, surviving are a daughter, Carol Kooke of Jerseyville, two Sons, Wilbert K. and Denzil Marshall, both of Jerseyville; 14 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; three sisters, Opal Kirby of Fieldon, and Millie Burch and Enid Davis, both of Jerseyville; and two brothers, Hershal Brooks of Quincy and Darrell brooks of Jerseyville. She was preceded in death by two siblings, Arnold and Dallas Brooks. Visitation is scheduled 4 to 9 p.m. today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. At the Bethany Baptist church in rural Jerseyville, visitation will continue from noon Tuesday until time of services at 2:30 p.m. the Revs. Earl Clagg and Clyde Shaw will officiate. MARSHALL. Died 09-02-1950. Mrs. Nona Marshall of Alton who was born and reared in Jersey County died Thursday, February 9, at St. Anthony’s infirmary in Alton. The aged woman sustained a hip fracture in a fall on the ice on January 5 and for a time was a patient at the Memorial hospital in Alton. Two weeks ago she was moved to the infirmary. Mrs. Marshall was a daughter of the late Edson A. and Margaret A. Dodge of Jerseyville and was born in this county July 28, 1872. Her age at the time of death was seventy-seven years, six months and eleven days. She had resided in Alton for nearly a half century. Her husband preceded her in death twenty-five years ago. The decedent is survived by a daughter, Mrs. F. E. Martin of Clarion, Pennsylvania; two Brothers, E. A. Dodge of Alton and Albert L. Dodge of St. Louis, and a granddaughter, Ruth, and a son, John Edson, preceded her in death. Funeral rites were conducted at the Streeper Funeral Home Saturday, February 11, at two o’clock. Burial was in the Upper Alton cemetery. Dated February 17, 1950.

MARSHALL. Died 20-05-1889. From Jersey County Democrat, May 23, 1889. Thomas Marshall born in Wilmington, Delaware, November 21, 1814 and died May 20, 1889, age 74 years. Came to Illinois in 1832, first to Alton. Married twice. First wife was Agnes Mcfarland, to whom he was married, May 26, 1845. She died at their home near Delhi, December 17, 1845, her child surviving the mother by 11 months. Second marriage on November 9, 1852, the last wife dying in 1883. MARSHALL. Died 29-07-1917. From Jerseyville Republican Aug. 1917. Wm. H. Marshall, son of Samuel and Jane Kemp Marshall was born near Brookville, Ohio, November 26, 1849 and died at home in Fidelity, Illinois July 29, 1917. 67 years. His mother died when he was two years old. His father again married to Lucy Compton. Father moved to Illinois in 1856 and located on farm at Fidelity. William never married. Leaves two aunts, Rebecca Howren and Harriet Marsahll of Brookville, and his cousins, Harry B. Marshall and Harriet L. Smith, Lizzie Sanford and Etta Baker of Brookville, Estella Lewis of Ashville, North Carolina and John Reed of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jennie Van Arsdale, Brookville, Ohio, Hattie Beebe and Martha Lindermulls, Marshalltown, Iowa. More distantly related were Misses Cora and Elizabeth Marshall and Mrs. W. W. Downs of Fidelity and Mrs. H. M. Turner of Medora, Jane Peters of Decatur, John Marshall of Alton and Clarence and Harry Marshall of Minneapolis. He loved to read and enjoyed and appreciated the great books.
MARSHAW. Died 07-12-1974. Dow man, granddaughter die in fire. An 81 year old Dow man and his 16 year old granddaughter died in a fire December 7 that destroyed a chicken house on a farm owned by the girl’s parents, east of Edwardsville, according to a story in the Globe-Democrat. Fred Marshaw and Debra Rinkel were found inside the building while it was still burning at 6 p.m. The girl is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Rinkel, of Edwardsville. The pair were working in the structure when the fire broke out, Madison County sheriff deputies said. It is believed a malfunction in an electric space heater was the cause of the blaze. About 6,000 chickens were also destroyed. Deputy coroner James Laughlin declared the man and girl dead at the scene. Members of the Troy fire department discovered the bodies. Marshaw was a member of Full Moon Lodge 341 in Grafton and also a member of the Grafton Order of Eastern Star. His funeral was held Wednesday at the Eden United Church of Christ and burial was in Valhalla cemetery. Dated 12-12- 1974.
MARSHAW. Died 28-07-1971. Funeral rites for Mrs. Gladys Mae Marshaw, 77, of Dow were held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Crismon of Edwardsville officiating. Her death occurred July 28 in Lincoln County Memorial hospital in Troy, Missouri. Interment was in Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey. She was born February 17, 1894 in Illinois the daughter of William and Maggie Cooke Chamberlin. Mrs. Marshaw was a member of the Salem Methodist church and Grafton Order of Eastern Star. She is survived by her husband, Fred Marshaw of Dow; two daughters, Mrs. Edwin Strassmeier of Troy, Missouri, and Mrs. Carl Rinkle of Edwardsville; and three grandchildren. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where OES services were conducted at 8:00 p.m. Friday. Dated 8/5/71.
MARSHAW. Died 29-12-1957. Joseph Edmund Marshaw, eighty-eight year old Jersey County resident, died Saturday morning, December 29, at four o’clock at his home near Dow. Mr. Marshaw was a retired farmer. The decedent was a son of the late Joseph and Sarah McDow Marshaw and was born in Jersey County on August 15, 1868. His age at the time of death was eighty-eight years, four months, and fourteen days. Mr. Marshaw is survived by his son, Fred e. Marshaw of Dow, with whom he made his home; two granddaughters, Mrs. Edwin Strassemeier of Troy, Missouri, and Mrs. Carl Rinkel of Edwardsville; one Greatson, Robert Edward Strassmeier of Troy, Missouri, two nieces and three nephews. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Final rites were held Monday afternoon, December 31, at 1:30 o’clock at the Funeral Home. Rev. R. F. Tormohlen of Edwardsville officiated at the services and internment was in Valhalla Memorial Park. Dated 1/3/57.
MARSHAW. Died 12-05-1948. Mrs. Martha Ellen Marshaw, wife of J. E. Marshaw of the Dow vicinity, died at her home Wednesday morning, May 12, at one forty-five o’clock following a week’s illness. Mrs. Marshaw was the daughter of the late John and Mary Luellen Simpson and was born on March 16, 1869. Her age at time of death was seventy-nine years, one month, and twenty-six days. Surviving the decedent in addition to her husband to whom she was married more than fifty years ago, is one Son, Fred E. Marshaw of Dow, and two grandchildren, Mrs. Edwin Strassemeier of Troy, Missouri, and Miss Betty Jean Marshaw of Dow. One son died in infancy. Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist church in Jerseyville, Friday afternoon, May 14, at 2:30 o’clock, D. S. T. Reverend Dale Harmon, pastor of the church, and Rev. Harry E. Nease, pastor of the Grafton and Salem Methodist churches, will conduct the rites. Interment will be in Valhalla Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Jacoby Brothers Chapel. Dated March, 1948.

MARSTON. Died 11-05-1908. Jerseyville Republican June 4, 1908. Adeline C. Cadwallader born in Fulton County, Illinois. On December 21st, 1843. She moved with parents to Jersey County, in 1858, settling near Otterville. Early life spent on farm and education obtained in the public schools including the noted stone school house in Otterville. She was married to Joseph G. Marston on February 12, 1868 and settled in Jerseyville. Converted in 1860 and united with ME church and remained member. Her special fields of labor in the church were the primary department in the Sunday school, which she conducted for upwards of 20 years, the choir and the Ladies Aid Society. Of the latter she was charter member and its treasurer for 20 years. Her love for children drew her to the primary department where her long service enabled her to teach the children of her earlier pupils. Devoted to sacred music and her voice was often heard in the homes of rich and poor chanting the hymns of hope and consolation on funeral occasions. Helped the sick and needy. Leaves husband, aged mother, two sister, one brother. She entered upon long term of invalidism, which ended in peaceful death at her home on May 11, 1908. Additional obituary dated may, 1908. MARSTON. Died 00-02-1878. From Republican Examiner, February 12, 1878. Mrs. Elizabeth Marston died at her home two miles south of Delhi, last Monday night. Was a native of Philadelphia – nee Powers. Born on September 27, 1801. Married Capt. Oliver Marston, well known and successful sea captain, who preceded her to grave in September1856. In 1842 to Jersey County – in a large two story frame, gotten out in the “Quaker City” and transported to the far west. Mrs. Marston was mother of eight children, six of whom are dead, two living, Samuel T. Marston, who lives at old homestead; and Joseph G. Marston, our well known grocer. Funeral from her home. Rev. MARSTON. Died 14-8-1989. Joe W. Marston, 84, died at 6:45 p.m. Monday, August 14, 1989 at home. Marston retired in 1965 as Superintendent of Macoupin County Department of Welfare after 30 years of service. He was former president of Brighton cemetery board and owned and Operated J. W. Marston Real Estate and Tax, Brighton. Born in Brighton, he was the son of the late William O. and Adele (Homalya) Marston. He married the former Censia Aghetta October 7, 1942, in Marissa, and she survives. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Targhetta Funeral Home in Brighton. The Rev. Paul Anders will officiate. Burial is in Brighton cemetery. Memorials may be given to Wood River township hospital hospice unit or St. Paul Methodist church of Brighton.

She was born January25, 1904 in New Albany, Indiana, a daughter of Homer and Emma Rolen Kitch. She is survived by a son, James R. Stinson, Portland, Maine; a daughter, Helen Seehausen, Fieldon; one grandchild and a great-grandchild; and two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Watts of Foley, Missouri and Mrs. Irma Dickenson of St. Louis. She was born September 17, 1909 in Batchtown a daughter of Charles and Candice Twitchell Champlain. She had formerly worked as a nurses aide at Jersey Community hospital and in nursing homes. She is survived by her husband Otis Preston “John” Martin; two sons, David of Jerseyville and Charles of Cottage Hills; two daughters, Gladys Davis of Jerseyville and Clara Huff of Brighton, 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and three sisters and two grandchildren. Services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. James Pepper officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. The American Cancer society has been named as a memorial.
MARTIN. Died 26-04-1986. Dated May 7, 1986. Donald E. Martin, 63, of Jerseyville died at 9:22 a.m. Saturday, April 26, 1986, at his residence, following a lengthy illness. A rural mail carrier and a veteran of World War II, he was named Illinois rural carrier of the year in 1984. He was born in Carrollton, son of Latmere Martin of White Hall and the late Nancy Gilland Martin. On July 11, 1945, he married Pauline H. Powers who survives. Surviving in addition to his wife and father are one son, Pepper of White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia; two Daughters, Karen Goetten, of Carrollton and Pati Fry of Jerseyville; 10 grandchildren; 10 Sisters, Doris Kelly and Eleanor Plato, both of Jerseyville; Betty Halbath of Mendota, Mary Reedy of Fresno, California; Pauline Holmes of Alton, Ruth Ann Booker of Shreveport, Louisiana, Melinda Martin of Jacksonville, Malissa Westerland of Aldeo, Margaret Martin of Elpasco, and Marie Martin of White Hall. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville where Masonic services will be at 7:30 p.m. funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Funeral Home with the Rev. Rick Francis officiating. Burial will be in Grimes cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials are the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society and Peace United Church of Christ of which he was a member. He was a life member of the VFW and a past master of the Fieldon Masonic Lodge. He had been a member of the Jerseyville City Council. He was a 149 pints blood donor for the Red Cross. He was rural carrier of the year for Illinois in 1984. MARTIN. Died 00-02-1888. Republican Examiner, February 17, 1888. Mrs. W. W. Martin died at family home on Sixth and Henry Streets in Alton. Mrs. Martin, nee Emeline Henderson, born in Jersey County February 15, 1837. Married to W. G. Pinckard September 16, 1857. He died seven years later. He was killed in battle while serving as a federal soldier February 15, 1864. Two children: Wm. R. Pinckard and May E. Pinckard both of whom survive. January 20,1856 she married W. W. Martin. Two children: Robert and Webb. Leaves four children, aged mother, Mrs. M. A. Henderson, still living at the Jersey County homestead, two sisters and a brother; Mrs. Fanny English and Mrs. Aaron Auten of Jerseyville and Mr. Frank Henderson.
MARTIN. Died 00-06-1971. Dated 6/21/71. A double tragedy occurred Thursday evening in the Glenn Martin family of Rock Island. Mr. and Mrs. Martin were found dead in their home Friday after an investigation was started when the couple did not report to their work at the Rock Island Arsenal. Coroner James Shaw told the Democrat News Wednesday morning in a telephone conversation that inquests into the deaths are pending. Funeral services for Mr. Martin were held Tuesday afternoon at the Larson Funeral Home in Rock Island with Dr. Wilbur N. Palmquist, a retired Lutheran minister and neighbor of the family, officiating. Burial was in National cemetery at the Rock Island Arsenal. Mr. Martin, 47, had been with the army weapons command as financial analyst for 23 years. He was the son of Latmer Earl Martin of White Hall and Mrs. Nancy Ann Gilleland Springman of Fieldon and was born near White Hall on February 13, 1924. Surviving him in addition to his father and mother are one brother, Donald Martin of Jerseyville and five sisters, Mrs. Wilbur (Pauline) Holmes of Alton, Mrs. Doris Kelly of Highland Park, Mrs. Wayne (Betty) Halboth of Compton, Mrs. William (Mary) Reedy of Fresno, California, and Mrs. William (Eleanor) Plato of Jerseyville. Final rites for Mrs. Martin, 45, were held at the Larson Funeral Home on Wednesday afternoon and burial was in Memorial Park cemetery in Rock Island. Mrs. Martin, who had been employed at the arsenal for 20 years, is survived by three sisters and one brother.

She is survived by two sons, Preston Martin of Fieldon and Fred, Jr. of Jerseyville; and two daughters Mrs. Ethel Drage of Jerseyville and Mrs. Leora Clary of Wood River; six sisters, Mrs. Ida Brooks, Mrs. Viola Brooks, Mrs. Lavina Mourning, Mrs. Eunice Mattis, Jerseyville, Mrs. Alice Powell of Medora, Mrs. Flora Wheeler of Mcleansboro; 15 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, three brothers and five sister. Visitation was held at Gubser Funeral Home.

Mrs. Malinda Martin of Dow, widow of Frank Martin, died at ten-thirty o’clock Wednesday night at the Watson Nursing Home in Jerseyville where she had resided since July 14, 1958. Mrs. Martin was born in Jersey County October 27, 1888, a daughter of the late Daniel and Frances Thompson Cornelius. Her age at the time of death was eighty-one years, nine months and two days. The decedent is survived by three sons, George Martin of Spanish Fork, Utah; Ray Martin of San Francisco, California; and Roy Martin of Alton; one daughter, Mrs. Fred (Emma) Newberry of Godfrey; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; three brothers, Asa Cornelius of Carlinville, Edward Cornelius of Muncie, Indiana; and Henry Cornelius of Muncie, Indiana; and two sisters, Mrs. Rhoda Lewis of Manhattan, Kansas and Mrs. Effie Cornelius of Dow. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery, Jerseyville. She died at 4:15 p.m. October 20 at St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton. She was born March 9, 1929, a daughter of Catlie and Enid Haven Shaw. Survivors are her husband, Charles Martin whom she married August 27, 1954 in Jerseyville; sons, Charles William of Alton and James, Dennis and Daniel, at home; a Daughter, Becky Lee Desherlia of Brighton; brothers Ralph Shaw, White Hall and Dennis Shaw, Jacksonville; and five grandchildren. Her parents, two brothers and three sisters preceded her in death. The family has named the Church of the Nazarene as a memorial.

She is survived by two sisters, Elsie young and Jewell Frazier, both of Granite City.

MASON. Died 00-00-1921. Source not noted. While calling on neighbor, Mrs. Sarah Mason, aged 71 years, 9 months and 9 days, died suddenly at the home of a neighbor, Bert Geyer, where she had gone to pay morning call. Mrs. Mason complained of being ill, and Dr. Laurens Enos was sent for. She passed away a few minutes later at 10:45 a.m. She is survived by her husband, John Mason. The aged couple had no children. Funeral services will be held from the home Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. The Rev. L. W. Porter will officiate. Interment will be in Union cemetery.
MASSEY. Died 27-08-1956. Dated 9/6/56. Funeral services for Mrs. Bessie M. Massey, wife of Lee Massey of Jerseyville, were held Tuesday afternoon, September 4, at the Otterville Baptist church at two o’clock. Rev. Carl C. Moman, pastor of the First Baptist church of Jerseyville, officiated and interment was in the Grimes cemetery. The death of Mrs. Massey occurred on August 27, at the Memorial hospital in Alton. She had suffered from a heart malady for sometime. The final rites were held in abeyance until the return of Mr. and Mrs. John Watkins who were on their wedding trip. Mrs. Watkins is a granddaughter of Mrs. Massey.
MASSEY. Died 25-06-1986. Clarence Lee Massey, 93, died at 2:10 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 1986, at Jersey Community hospital. He had been a resident of Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville. He was a farmer and was born in Jersey County, son of the Late Henry Woodbury and Mary (Silvers) Massey. On May 2, 1914, in Edwardsville, he married the former Bessie M. Newberry, who died August 27, 1956. Survivors include a daughter, Lois Georgeff of Hillsbors; two grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. There will be no visitation. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Grimes-Neeley cemetery in Jerseyville. Rev. Ted Jackson will officiate. Memorials may be given to a charity of one’s choice. John Massey, an old citizen, died in this city Friday last, after a lingering illness, and was buried Sunday from the ME church in Kane, Rev. C. E. Cline officiating. 65 years of age. Formerly a pastor of the Methodist church. Personal difficulties severed his relation with the church. Born in St. Louis County, Missouri, March 18, 1818, moved to Greene County with parents. Married to Mrs. Catherine Dodson in 1870. She survives. Converted in early life, learned to exhort and then to preach, ordained deacon.

Miss Kathleen Massey of Jerseyville, former housekeeper for Father Cornelius Horn at Dalton City, Illinois, died at nine o’clock Thursday evening October 16, at St. Anthony’s Infirmary in Alton where she had been moved earlier in the week. Miss Massey had been ill for several months and after undergoing surgical treatment was cared for in the home of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tracy of Jerseyville for several weeks before her removal to the infirmary. The deceased was a daughter of the late Stephen Lycurgus and Mary Ann Maloney Massey, and was born in Jersey County October 8, 1909. She marked her forty-third birthday anniversary a few days before her death. Miss Massey is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Tracy and Miss Lucille Massey of Jerseyville and Mrs. Edward Ballhurst of Alton, and four brothers, Harry, Frank, and James of Jerseyville and John Massey of Alexander. Funeral services were held from Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home to St. Francis Xavier church Monday morning, October 20, at nine thirty o’clock. Rev. Father John J. Clancy was celebrant of the solemn requiem high mass. Interment was in St. Francis Xavier cemetery.

Three brothers, Harry, Frank, and James Massey; and two Sisters, Nellie Tracy and Kathleen Massey, preceded her in death. Massey formerly of Jersey County, which was held Monday in Presbyterian church in this city. Rev. John M. Sanders of Granite City. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Mary Silvers Massey, daughter of William and Anna Silvers, Born in Trenton, New Jersey, June 27, 1862 and died at her home in Granite City, Illinois December 22, 1927, age 65 years. Married Henry W. Massey, February 21, 1882. He died November 12, 1911. She leaves six children, three sons and three daughters, Henry Clay of Granite City, Mrs. Clara Nutzenberger of Harligen, Texas, Mrs. Fannie Greenman and Rowy W. Massey, both of Granite City, Clarence Lee Massey of Jerseyville and Mrs. Mildred Mcfain of Nameoki, Illinois and nine grandchildren, also a half sister, Mrs. J. P. McDonald of Tombstone, Arizona. After death of her parents, at age of eleven, she came to the home of Mrs. and Mrs. Clarence Davidson, remaining there until married. After marriage she lived 2 1/2 southwest of Jerseyville until 1921, when she came to Granite City, where she lived with her son, Clay until called home. Member of Presbyterian Church of Granite City. Always thoughtful of others. Her ideals of highest order.

MATHEW. Died 31-08-1982. The funeral of Edna Mathew, 96, a resident of Garnet’s Chateau, was held Saturday afternoon at Gubser Funeral Home with the Rev. V. Clay Noah officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Her death occurred at 6:55 a.m. August 31 at Jersey Community hospital. She was born January 2, 1886 in Jersey County, the daughter of the late Jerome and Elizabeth Cyter Miller. Her husband, Earl Mathew, died March 23, 1961. She is survived by three Daughters, Yvonne Easley of Jerseyville, Imogene Reid of Tucson, Arizona, and Maxine Vaughn of St. Louis; five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and a brother, Charles Miller of Wichita, Kansas. She was preceded in death by one son, a brother, five sisters and one grandchild. The First Baptist church of Jerseyville of which she was a member has been named as a memorial.
MATHEWS. Died 14-05-1988. Beatrice L. Mathews, 78, formerly of Jerseyville, died May 14 in Florida. She was born April 5, 1907 in Girard, the daughter of the late Franklin and Sara Ann Hughes Spencer. She married Howard “Jack” Mathews, and he died October 25, 1973. She is survived by one son, Donald Radley of Arcola; one daughter, Mary Ann McKenna, Palm Beach, Florida; two sisters, Sarah Hagen of Godfrey and Virginia Vise, Urbana; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, may 20 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home, Rev. Wayne Pendleton officiating. Burial was at Oak Grove cemetery. The family has designated the Hadley School for the Blind as a memorial.
MATHEWS. Date and name of paper not noted: Mrs. Charlotta Mathews passed away in St. Louis Tuesday, January 26, at an age of 64 years, 1 month and 3 days. The remains were taken to the home of her daughter in Jerseyville, Mrs. Wm. Stratton, 101 East Carpenter, where Rev. W. S. Neely of the Presbyterian church will conduct the funeral services this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Interment will take place at Oak Grove cemetery. The complete obituary will appear next week.
MATHEWS. Clara Mathews, 83, of Marseilles, formerly of Jerseyville, died Wednesday morning, September 10, 1986, at Lasalle County Nursing Home in Ottawa. She was born in Jerseyville, daughter of the late William and Martha (Freeman) Meier. In 1920 in Grafton, she married Homer Mathews, Sr. and he died in 1981. Surviving are three sons, Homer Matthews, Jr. of Ottawa, Raymond Mathews of Bay City, Texas, and Ted Mathews Sr. of Dayton; a daughter, Betty Sharp of Marseilles; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Seals-Campbell Funeral Home in Marseille. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist church of Marseilles with Rev. C. Edwin Boone officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Memorial Park in Ottawa. Memorials may be given to the church, where she was a member.
MATHEWS. Died 00-01-1984. David Merle Mathews, 46, died at 2:25 p.m. Thursday at Akron City Hospital in Akron, Ohio. Born in Jerseyville, the son of Martha Mathews of Chattanooga, Tennesse and the late Paul Mathews, he married the former Karen Porsch on April 24, 1976, in Brighton, and she survives in Brighton. He was owner-operator of D & M Trucking, Inc. and served in Korea in the Navy. Also surviving are one daughter, Tonya at home; three Sisters, Ruth, Esther and Becky; and one brother Paul Mathews, Jr. Visitation will be from 9:00 am Monday until service time at 11 am Monday at Warner-Targhetta Funeral Home in Brighton. Burial will be in Brighton cemetery and memorials may be sent to the heart fund. A coroner’s inquest is pending.
MATHEWS. Died 10-25-1973. Funeral services for Howard “Jack” Mathews, 64, of 427 Barr Ave., Jerseyville, were held Sunday afternoon from Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. He was pronounced dead on arrival at 8 p.m. Thursday at Jersey Community hospital. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr. Mathews was a laborer on construction and had been a doorman for eight years at the Illinois Senate in Springfield. His survivors are his widow, the former Beatrice Spencer; and a sister, Mrs. Irene Jones of Godfrey.
MATHEWS. Died 08-01-1975. Final services for Mrs. Ruth Ida Mathews of Rural Route 1, Fieldon were conducted Friday afternoon, January 10, from Jacoby Funeral Home where visitation was held. Her death occurred at 10:21 a.m. on January 8 at Jersey Community hospital. Interment was in the Hardin cemetery. Rev. A. J. Maggos officiated. She was born in Dickerson County in Virginia, September 24, 1896, the daughter of Wade and Cordelia Porter Ramsey. Mrs. Mathews was a member of the Pentecostal Church of Nutwood. Her husband was the Late T. K. Mathews. She is survived by four Sons, Paul and Robert Reedy of Bethalto, Bruce Reedy of Eccles, West Virginia and Cletus Reedy of Jacksonville; and two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Scott of Fieldon and Mrs. James E. (Freda) Mullins of Blair, West Virginia; two grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren and a brother, Robert Ramsey of Texas. Her parents, husband and a son preceded her in death.

MATHIS. John B. Mathis, 71, died at 7:45 am today July, 6, 1988 at Jersey Community hospital in Jerseyville. Mathis had been an automobile salesman and, in 1987, retired from Sunderland Motors in Jerseyville. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, he was the son of Late Celestin and Margaret (Siemer) Mathis. He married the former Helen Kerns May 9, 1941 in Kansas City, Missouri and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters Martha Waters of Godfrey and Lynn Albert of Collinsville; two sons, John B. Mathis, Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia, and Michael C. Mathis of Gillespie; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two Sisters, Josephine Witte and Celeste Nord. Visitation will be 5-9 pm Thursday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville where rosary will be recited 7 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 am Friday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic church in Jerseyville with the Rev. Henry Schmidt as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Francis cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to masses or Chicago Lung Association.
MATHIS. Died 02-09-1953. Mrs. Margaret Katherine Mathis of this city died Wednesday morning, September 2 at ten o’clock in a hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. She had been in ill health for several months and had been spending some time at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Edward A. Witte, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mrs. Mathis was for many years an employee of the Jerseyville branch of the International Shoe Co. The decedent was a daughter of the late John and Louise Weber Seimer and was born in Greene County, Illinois on October 15, 1892. Her age at the time of death was sixty years, ten months and seventeen days. Surviving Mrs. Mathis are one son, John Mathis of Jerseyville; two daughters, Mrs. D. H. Nord of Huxley, Iowa, and Mrs. Edard A. Witte of Cincinnati, Ohio; twelve grandchildren; two Brothers M. J. Seimer of Godfrey and Julius Seimer of Little Rock, Arkansas, and two sisters, Mrs. Josephine Deshasier of Carrollton and Mrs. C. E. Newton of Cuberston, Montana. MATTHEWS. Died 11-04-1983. Mass of the resurrection was celebrated at the Church of Magdalena, St. Louis, April 14 for Mrs. Bernice F. Matthews, whose death occurred April 11 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in that city. Mrs. Matthews, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Fitzpatrick, was born and reared in Jerseyville. The family moved to St. Louis shortly after her graduation from Jersey Township High School. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Matthews. Surviving are a daughter, Margaret H. Gunn; three Sisters, Helen and Mary Margaret Fitzpatrick and Dorothy Watson of St. Louis; and three Brothers, John, James and Richard. Burial was in Calvary cemetery, St. Louis.
MATTHEWS. Died 17-02-1981. Ethel Marie Matthews, 69, of Cottage Hills, and formerly of Hardin, died at 9:34 p.m. Tuesday, February 17, 1981 at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield. Born in East St. Louis, she was a daughter of the Late Jefferson P. and Laura (Delaney) Poore. Surviving are two daughters, Helen M. Hillen of Alton and Maxine Fix of Eldred; three sons, Robert of Godfrey, Paul of Cottage Hills and Jerome of Eldred; six grandchildren; two sisters, Eleanor Poore of Florida and Loraine Kirchner of Jerseyville; and four brothers Jack, William, and Abner Poore, all of Hardin, and James Poore of Miami, Florida. Visitation was held Thursday at Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin where services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Warren Brown officiating. Burial was in Hardin cemetery and the Kidney Foundation has been named as a memorial.

MATTHEWS. Died 23-05-1984. Former area resident Paul Erschel Matthews, 72, of Plainview, died May 23 at Carlinville area hospital. He was born may 12, 1914 at Rosedale to Mark and Mary (Weaver) Matthews. He married Cathern Albert on June 12, 1940 in Medora. He worked at Beaver Dam State Park for 15 years, retiring in November, 1984. Survivors include his wife; daughters , Mabel Harris of Corona, California, Cathern Bert of Palmyra, Paula Dugan of Alton and Naomi Iler of Louisville, Kentucky; half brother Lemar Weaver of Jerseyville; and seven grandchildren. Visitation was May 26 at Warner-Targhetta Funeral Home at Shipman, and the funeral was May 27 there with Rev. Darrell Molen officiating. Burial was in the Shipman cemetery. Memorials have been established to Bethlehem church in Shipman and Blooming Grove Church in Palmyra.

She was born in Greene County, December 23, 1884, a daughter of the Late Daniel and Laura Chism Woolsey. Her husband, John Mattis, died in 1959. She is survived by two sons, Louie Mattis of Carrollton; three daughters Mrs. Nellie Stuart of Jerseyville, Mrs. Sherman (Mildred) Barry of Kane, Mrs. George (Ada) Berlemann of Edwardsville; one grandchild; two great grandchildren; and five sisters, Ida Brooks, Viola Brooks and Lavina Mourning of Jerseyville and Alice Powell of Medora and Flora Wheeler of Mcleansboro. The Bethany Baptist church has been named as a memorial.

Friends may call at the Funeral Home after two o’clock Friday afternoon, December 18. The death of Mr. Mattis occurred Wednesday morning, December 16 at 9:45 o’clock at the Jersey Community hospital. He had been in ill health for some time and had been hospitalized on a number of occasions. The decedent was a son of the late Henry and Annie Starlin Mattis and was born in Greene County November 11, 1880. His age at the time of death was seventy-nine years, one month and five days. Mr. Mattis engaged in farming for a number of years. He and his wife had resided in Jerseyville the past eleven years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eunice Mattis of this city, two sons, Louie Mattis of Jerseyville and Melvin Mattis of Carrollton; three daughters Mrs. Nellie Stuart of Los Angeles, California, Mrs. Sherman Barry of Kane and Mrs. Ada Cook of Jerseyville, and one granddaughter, Mary Lou Mattis of Carrollton.

He retired from farming in 1964, and was born in Greene County, son of the late John T. and Eunice J. (Woolsey) Mattis. He married the former Ada Crow on February 14, 1942 in St. Charles, Missouri and she survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Lela Mae king of Jerseyville; two grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; three Sisters, Nellie Stuart and Mildred Barry, both of Jerseyville, and Ada Berlemann of Edwardsville; and one brother Melvin of Carrollton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Thursday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be conducted at 2 pm Friday with the Rev. Ron Woodrum officiating. His survivors are his wife, the former Armell “Dickie” Fox whom he married March 28, 1934 in Alton; one son, John E. Maupin of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two daughters Shirley Oulson of Grafton and Becky Roesch of Bloomton; nine grandchildren; five Brothers, Raymond of Cottage Hills, Leland of Jerseyville, Carl of Carrollton, William of Hartford and Arthur of Alton; two sisters, Mildred Orr and Elsa Maupin of Alton. MAUPIN. Died 00-08-1973. Funeral rites for Mrs. Elsah M. Maupin, 84, of 814 Spruce St. Alton, a native of Jersey County, will be held today (Thurs) at the First Presbyterial Church , Alton, with Rev. Dr. Cortley Burroughs officiating. Her death occurred at 12:10 pm Monday at Eunice Smith Nursing Home following an illness of 3 1/2 years. Interment will be in Valhalla Memorial Park. Born October 14, 1888 in Jersey County, she was a member of the First Presbyterian church in Alton and a charter member of the Jersey County Home Bureau. Her husband, Edward L. Maupin, died July, 1964. Mrs. Maupin was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph W. Bland. She is survived by six sons, Edward of Grafton, Leland of Jerseyville, Raymond of Cottage Hills, Carl of Carrollton, William of Hartford and Arthur of Alton; two daughters, Miss Elsa Maupin of Alton and Mrs. Mildred Orr of East Alton; 18 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren and two half brothers, William and Emmett Porter, both of Alton. The Alton First Presbyterian church has been designated as a memorial. Visitation was held at Gent Chapel.

MAYBERRY. Died 00-11-1983. Ronald Arthur Mayberry, 20, of Bay City Texas, died at 10 am Monday at Methodist hospital in Houston, Texas, following an industrial accident in Houston. He was born in Jerseyville, son of Thomas Edward and Mary Jean (Lemons) Mayberry of Bay City, Texas. In addition to his parents, surviving are two sisters, Lani Jo Brady, and Shawna Mayberry; and a brother, Donald, all of Texas. Visitation will be after 5 pm Saturday at Hanks Funeral Home in Pearl and the services will be conducted there at 1:30 pm Sunday with the Rev. Ernest Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Smith cemetery.
MAYERHOFER. Joseph Frank Mayerhofer, 75, died at 7:15 am Monday, March 3, 1976 at Christian hospital northeast in St. Louis County. He was born in Jersey County, son of the late Joseph and Anna Marie (Eichhorn) Mayerhofer. A World War II US army veteran, he was employed by GM & O railroad for 28 years. Surviving are a sister, Barbara Mayerhofer; and a brother, Tony Mayerhofer, both of Brighton. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 am Wednesday at Warner-Targhetta Funeral Home of Brighton. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Alphonsus Catholic church in Brighton at 10 am Wednesday with the Rev. William Maul as celebrant. Burial will be in the church cemetery, and memorials may be given to the American Cancer society.

She was born in Rosy County, Arkansas a daughter of the Late Pink and Myrtle (Metcalfe) West. She had been a ceramics teacher in Kemper for several years, and married Wilson Mayes on October 17, 1926, in Heber Springs, Arkansas He died June 23, 1969. Surviving are two sons, Ronnie Mayes of Kemper and David Mayes of Heyburn, Idaho; a foster daughter, Lois Ann Garcia of Sacramento, California; a foster son, Don Brown of Crest View, Florida, nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren a sister, Jewel Ross of Novato, California, a brother, Mason West of Fairfax, California, and a foster brother, Lee Meredith of Kemper. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 pm Wednesday at Warner-Targhetta Funeral Home in Medora. Services will be at the Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Guy Hardin officiating. Burial will be in the Kemper cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association.
MAYHALL. Lawrence D. Mayhall, 67, died at 10:22 pm Thursday, September 17, 1987 at St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton. Mayhall was an inspection foreman at Olin Corp. in East Alton before his retirement in 1982. He was born in Chautauqua, a son of the Late Henry and Laura (Brown) Mayhall. On August 31, 1944, in East Alton, he married the former Elsie Campbell, who survives. Also surviving are four daughters, R. Joyce Geiler of Lebanon, Illinois., C. Ann Hancock of Godfrey, and Cynthia Hayes and Kathy Williams both of Grafton; and nine grandchildren. Mayhall was preceded in death by a sister, Bessie Chadderton; and two brothers, Harold and James Mayhall. Services were conducted at 2 pm today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Grafton. Rev. Daniel Zimmerman officiated. Burial was at Scenic Hill cemetery in Grafton.

Six children: Miss Emma Mayland, of Los Angeles California, Mrs. Mena Heller of Jerseyville, Messrs. Fred, Frank and Charles Mayland of St. Louis. Five grandchildren.
MCGUIRE. Nellie B. McGuire, 87, died at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 27, 1987, at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville, after a lengthy illness. She was born in Jersey County, a daughter of the Late Walter G. and Agnes (Brooks) Mowen. On September 1, 1920 in Greene County, she married John J. “Bud” McGuire Sr. He died November 7, 1968. She and her husband owned and operated McGuire grocery in Jerseyville from 1930 until time of her retirement in 1956. Surviving are a son, John J. “Jack” McGuire Jr. of Cheyenne, Wyoming, a daughter Verna L. “Phizz” Turner of Medora; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a sister, Eva M. Bray of Alton. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Phyllis McGuire, a brother and three sisters. Visitation is from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Monday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral held at Brighton cemetery. Rev. Barkau serving. No other services being held because of epidemic of flu at Brighton. 24 years old. Odd Fellows attended in body.
MAXWELL. From Jerseyville Republican, February 20, 1919. Mrs. Edith Maxwell, 36 year old wife of David Maxwell, died at her home on February 17. Funeral from Presbyterian church, Rev. F. O. Wilson. Burial in Oak Grove Mausolem. Edith Wieland Maxwell born in Otterville April 5, 1882. Married David Maxwll November 3, 1909. Two children, one dying in infancy and Eva Mae with husband survive. Leaves also her mother, Mrs. Margaret Wieland, three sisters, Mrs. Fred Stafford of Rosedale, Illinois, Mrs. Harry Moody of Springfield, Mrs. August Jacobson of Elsah and four brothers, Herman of Los Angeles, California, Fred of Alton, Daniel and Louis of Dow.

Born February 3, 1891 in Dunkirk, New Jersey and died March 1 in veterans hospital in Houston, Texas. Veteran of WW I . Leaves nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by wife, the former Mildred Marie Cope of Grafton, January 9, 1982. Funeral from Gubser home. Rev. Simon A. Simon serving.
MAXWELL. Mrs. Mary A. Maxwell, nee Johnesee, died Saturday At 5 p.m. at the home of her son, Kellar Maxwell of St. Petersburg, Florida, at an age of 71 years. Sunday at 9 pm the remains left St. Petersburg to be taken to Jerseyville for burial. Deceased was born in Hardin County, Illinois and finding herself an orphan at the age of 1 1/2 years, the Clarence M. Hamilton family gave her a good home and reared her, Mrs. J. E. Cory’s mother becoming her guardian angel. She married Henry Maxwell who farmed in Jersey County for his entire life with the exception of a few years he spent near Springfield, Illinois. The funeral took place yesterday at 2 pm from the home of Postmaster, J. E. Cory to the M.E. Church, Rev. E. T. Carroll officiating. The husband died 6 years ago and two sons, Kellar of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Clarence Maxwell of Logansport, Indiana, are left to cherish her memory. Obit was undated.
MAXWELL. Died 09-01-1982. The funeral of Mildred Marie Maxwell, 78 of La Marque, Texas was conducted Monday afternoon from Gubser Funeral Home by the Rev. Leonard Todd. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery, Grafton. She died at 12:05 am on January 9 at St. Mary’s hospital in Galveston, Texas After a lengthy illness. Mrs. Maxwell was a retired civil service worker from Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Born June 28, 1903 in Grafton, she was a daughter of the late John A. and Lily Jeanette Dowdall Cope. Her survivors are her husband, Harry Maxwell of La Marque; two sisters Edith Whyte of La Marque and Ethel Fuller of Alton; nieces and nephews. Her parents, two brothers and a sister preceded her in death.
MAXWELL. Died 14-07-1955. The Democrat News received word this week from Alfred E. Maxwell of Green Cove Springs, Florida, of the death of his mother, Mrs. Minnie C. Maxwell, 81, which occurred at her home in Green Cove Springs following a long illness. Funeral rites were held Tuesday, July 19 at one o’clock in the Chapel of Ralph W. Tucker Funeral Home in Green Cove Springs and interment was in Arredondia cemetery near Gainsville, Florida. Mrs. Maxwell was the former Minnie Cordelia Liming and was a native of Jerseyville. She attended the Jerseyville high school and in 1891 was married to K. Maxwell. They moved to Arkansas and later returned to Jerseyville. The family also lived at Delhi and McClusky. They moved to Florida in 1904 and Mrs. Maxwell had resided in Green Cove Springs for thirty-four years. She is survived by her son, Alfred E. Maxwell, mathematics instructor in Clay County high school in Green Cove Springs; four daughters, Mrs. Elvira Knutre of Green Cove Springs, Mrs. Goldie Sellers, Largo, Florida, Mrs. Bessie Robbins, Jackson, Michigan, and Mrs. Thelma Dupree, Gainsville, Florida; twenty-four grandchildren and thirty-one great grandchildren.
