ZAGORSKI. Died 18-07-1975. Mrs. Harriet (Little) Zagorski, a former resident of Jerseyville, died unexpectedly at her home in East St. Louis on July 18. She was a sister of Mrs. Harold (Bernice) Bartlett and John Little of Jerseyville and Mrs. A. C. (Helen) Peters of Granite City. Mrs. Zagorski was born and reared in Jerseyville where she attended the local schools. Services were held at First Baptist church in Washington Park where she was an active member and had just recently organized a Golden Age Circle. Other survivors are a daughter, Mrs. William (Mary L) Nelson of Belleville, 1 son Joseph E. of Rockford and 7 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew, and 1 son, James. – incomplete.


ZAHN. Died 1906. William Zahn, 20, died of typhoid fever at the home of his father, Charles, 10 miles southwest of Jerseyville. Funeral from German Church at Fieldon. Rev. Crawford officiating.


ZEISER. Died 04-01-1979. Eva Mae Zeiser, 82, a seamstress, of 208 E. Carpenter, Jerseyville died at 6:50 am January 4 at Jersey Community hospital. The funeral was conducted Saturday afternoon from Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev. Robert Broeder officiated with burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Born in Jerseyville August 1, 1896, she was a daughter of Charles & Anna (Siller) Zeiser. Her only survivors are cousins. 2 sisters preceded her in death. Memorials may be given to Peace United Church of Christ, where she had been a member.


ZEISER. Died 1890. Mrs. F. X. Zeiser died; Rev. N. Lebman officiating at services. She leaves 4 children and her husband.


ZENKOWSKI. Died 29-09-903. Herman Zenkowski, employed as a shoemaker at Scheffer Shoe Store for 25 years died in St. Louis September 29. The native of Stettine, Prussia was buried in St. Louis.


ZERBY. Died 09-03-1982. Thomas P. Zerby, 76, of Rural Route 4, died at 10:25 pm March 9 at Jersey Community hospital. Services were conducted Friday afternoon at the Fieldon United Church of Christ by Rev. Robert Broeder. Burial was in Fieldon cemetery. He was born June 23, 1905 in Greene County, a son of Andrew & Martha (Price) Zerby and was a retired crew leader for Owens-Illinois. His survivors are his wife, Florence (Greene) Zerby, whom he married December 24, 1931 in Alton; 1 daughter, Phillis Krueger of Fieldon and 1 Grandson, David Krueger. His parents, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, and 2 half sisters preceded him in death. Memorials may be given to Fieldon United Church of Christ.


ZIEGENFUSS. Died 19-08-1982. Edward Ziegenfuss, 77, of Jerseyville, Rural Route 3, died August 19 at his home. He was retired from Standard Oil Company. He was born in Alton August 10, 1905, a son of William & Emma (Lane) Ziegenfuss. He is survived by his Wife, Alyis (Johnson) Ziegenfuss whom he married September 13, 1927 in Alton; 2 daughters, Emmalou Wade of Jerseyville and Millie Bailey of Alton; 2 sisters, Rose Heil of Rosewood Heights and Millie Montgomery of East Alton; 7 grandchildren and 4 g-grandchildren. Services were held Monday am at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev. R. E. George officiated with burial in Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey. Masonic services were conducted Sunday evening.


ZIEGER. Died 1979. Roy Zieger, 64, of Rural Route 2 Jerseyville, was born 07-07-1914 in St. Louis. He was a son of William F. and Stella H. (Maller) Zieger. Mr Zieger was a retired security guard from Duncan Foundry. Visitation was after 6 pm January 21, at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Services were held at 10:30 am Monday by Rev. R. E. George. Burial was in Memorial Park cemetery, St. Louis. His survivors are his wife, Lila (Ethington) (Hanley) Zieger; 9 daughters, Victoria Cummings, Jerseyville, Debbie Kirkbridge, Italy, Linda Mulwee, Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri Katherine, Karen, Roberta, Stella, Carlene and Janey; and 1 son, Roy, all of Jerseyville; 3 grandchildren and 2 brothers, William Zieger of Sun City, Arizona and Oliver Zieger of Phoenix, Arizona.


ZIGRAND. Edna M. Zigrand, 69, of 4807 Storyland Dr., Godfrey, died at 11:15 pm Thursday at St. Joseph hospital after a lengthy illness. Born in Hardin, a daughter of the late Louis & Margaret (Woelfel) Ringhausen, she married Homer Zigrang on October 29, 1930, in Hardin. In addition to her husband, surviving are 4 Daughters, Jeannine Garvey of Godfrey, Georgia Slaten and Elizabeth Stutz both of Alton, and Christine Ghent of Casselberry, Florida; 1 son, Thomas of Alton; 14 grandchildren; 3 g-grandchildren; 4 brothers Bert Ringhausen of Hardin, Bill Ringhausen of Fieldon, Ted Ringhausen of Jerseyville and Art Ringhausen of St. Charles, Missouri. 2 brothers preceded her in death. Visitation will be from 2-9pm Sunday at Gent Funeral Home where the parish rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 9:30 am Monday at St. Ambrose Catholic church, where she was a charter member, with Rev. James Hill as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Norbert Cemetery, Hardin. Memorials may be given to St. Ambrose building fund.


ZIMMERMAN. Alan Howard Zimmerman, 42, died at 11:50 am Saturday March 3, 1990, at St. Anthony hospital in Alton after an illness. He was employed as a steel worker at Laclede Steel Company in Alton for 23 years and belonged to the United Steel Workers’ Union. He was a US Army Vietnam war veteran. Born in Alton, he was the son of Ow(u)retha (Duff) Zimmerman of Grafton and the late William H. Zimmerman. In addition to his mother, surviving are 2 children, Jesse and Kate Zimmerman, both at home; grandmother Lillian Duff of Grafton; 4 sisters, Susan Vitt of Cobden, Karen Raub of Bloomington, Indiana, Beth Farmer of Dow and Lisa Grace of Godfrey; and 1 brother, Robert Zimmerman of Dilley, Texas. Visitation is from 6-9 pm Monday at Jacoby-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are at 2 pm Tuesday. Rev. Daniel Zimmerman will officiate. Graveside services will be conducted by Grafton American Legion Post 648 in Scenic Hill cemetery in Grafton. Memorials may be given to the United Way.


ZIMMERMAN. Died 10-03-1982. Barry Max Zimmerman, 40, of Godfrey who died March 10 at his residence was a native was owner of Zimmerman Distributing Company. Services were conducted at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev. Joy Settles officiated and burial was in Kane cemetery. The Jersey County native is survived by his mother, Ruth (Barry) Zimmerman of Godfrey; wife, Arlene; 1 daughter, Amber Michelle, at home; 1 brother, Franklin Zimmerman and father, Max Zimmerman. Memorials may be given to the Baptist Children’s Home at Carmi. A coroner’s inquest is pending.


ZIMMERMAN. Died 03-05-1978. Mrs. Bertha Henrietta Fredricka Zimmerman, 82, of Rural Route 1 Grafton was dead on arrival at 4:10 pm may 3 at Jersey Community hospital. Born February 28, 1896 in Brussels, she was a daughter of Henry & Carolyn Depper. She married Maximillian Earhart Zimmerman August 5, 1914 in Carrollton. He died November 11,1962. Her survivors are 3 sons, Max and Donald of Grafton and Russell of Alton; 2 Daughters, Alice Young of Alton and Doris Cates of Carrollton, OH; 2 Sisters, Grace Grizzle of Jerseyville and Alice Williams of Rockbridge; 12 grandchildren; 5 g-grandchildren. Her parents, husband, 1 daughter, 4 brothers and 1 sister preceded her in death. Visitation will be after 4 pm May 5 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Services will be conducted at 2 pm Saturday at the Funeral Home by Rev. James Pepper. Burial will be in Scenic Hill cemetery, Grafton. Memorials may be given to the heart fund and American Cancer Society.


ZIMMERMAN. Died 30-04-1958. Mrs. Edna Zimmerman, 70 years 2 months, 26 days, wife of Edward Zimmerman, of Chatauqua died Wednesday evening April, 30, at 10:30 at Jersey Community hospital where she had been moved from her home about 3 hours earlier. She had been in failing health but her condition was not considered serious. The body is at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where friends may call after 7:30 pm Thursday evening. Final rites will be held at the Funeral Home Saturday, may 3, at 2 pm. Rev. William Botner, pastor of Grafton Baptist church, and Rev. Benjamin Sauerwein, pastor of Bible Baptist church of Jerseyville, will officiate and interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs. Zimmerman was a daughter of the late Henry A. & Mina (Burgmann) Stiermann and was born in St. Louis on February 4, 1888. Surviving her in addition to her husband, are 2 sons, Paul Edward Zimmerman of New Havens, Missouri, and Daniel William Zimmerman of Gao, French West Africa, 1 daughter, Mrs. James (Mary Charlotte) Pepper of Jerseyville, 1 brother, Charles H. Stiermann of St. Louis and 7 grandchildren.


ZIMMERMAN. Died 14-07-1986. Eleanor S. Zimmerman, 61, of Grafton, died July 14, at Garnet’s Chateau Nursing Home in Jerseyville. She was born April 18, 1925, in Burnsted, South Dakota to the late Joseph & Stephina (Wald) Braunagel. She married Claude Zimmerman on February 4, 1954, in Yakima, Washington. She was a WW II veteran, serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force. She owned a fish stand in Grafton for several years. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a primary teacher at church. Survivors include her husband, Claude of Grafton; 6 sons, Godfrey Morgan of Cochrane, Alberta, Canada, Dennis of Dow, Nathan of Grafton, Claude of Godfrey, Paul of Jerseyville and David Zimmerman of Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma City; 11 grandchildren; and many brothers and sisters. Visitation was July 16, at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Grafton. And the funeral was July 17 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Alton with Bishor Reid Mortensen officiating. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church.


ZIMMERMAN. Died 18-11-1928. Wm. Zimmerman, 88, died at Alton. Funeral from Methodist church in Grafton. Masonic services were also held. He leaves his widow; 2 daughters, Mrs. Emma Bray of Jacksonville, Miss Katherine Zimmerman of Grafton; 6 sons, Frank, Wm., Max and Harry all of Grafton, Edward of Chautauqua, Henry of West Alton. Ernest Wm. Zimmerman was born in Leipsic, Germany March 11, 1840 – died November 18, 1928. Came to America in 1867, moved to St. Louis then to Grafton, where he opened a blacksmith shop. In 1868 married Pauline Schulze of House Springs, Missouri.


ZIMMERMAN. Died 1965. John B. Zimmerman, 65, of 113 Curtis St. Jerseyville, a teacher of social science at the West Junior High School in Alton, died at 2:10 am Friday at Jersey Community hospital where he had been a patient the past 5 days. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services were held at 2 pm Sunday. Rev. Mode Powell, pastor of First Methodist church, officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr Zimmerman was born in Alton but had made his home in Jerseyville for the past 26 years. Prior to WW II, he had served as an educational advisor in the Civilian Conservation Corps, and during the war he was a Field Director with the American Red Cross. For the past 25 years he has been with the Alton school system, and prior to his assignment to West Junior High he was in the vocational phase of the educational work. Surviving him are his Wife, Lillian Valette (Stamper) Zimmerman; 1 son, John G. (Jerry) Zimmerman, Jerseyville; 1 daughter, Mrs. Earl (Marcia) Watson of Jerseyville; 4 grandchildren; 4 brothers, George Zimmerman of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Alex Zimmerman of New Jersey, William T. Zimmerman of Warrenton, Missouri, and Earl Zimmerman of Edwardsville, and 1 sister, Mrs. Bertha Graham of Indiana.


ZIMMERMAN. Died 24-01-1992. Lillian Vallette Zimmerman, 86 died at 2:40 am January 24, 1992, at Jersey Community hospital. The retired schoolteacher was born October 2, 1904, in Grafton, daughter of the late Joseph & Clara (Calloway) Stamper. She married John B. Zimmerman in Godfrey on August 4, 1929. He died January 1965. Surviving are 1 daughter, Marcia Watson of Jerseyville; 1 son John G. (Jerry) Zimmerman of Brighton; 9 grandchildren; 7 g-grandchildren; 1 sister, Marjorie Hooper of Jerseyville; and 1 brother, Joseph “Buddy” Stamper of Jerseyville. 1 granddaughter and 1 sister, Alice Gisy, preceded her in death. No visitation or services are scheduled. Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements.


ZIMMERMAN. Died 21-10-1970. Mrs. Mary Zimmerman, 80, of Joliet, a former resident of Kane and Jerseyville, died October 21 at St. Joseph hospital in Joliet. Rev. Carlton Christenson will conduct the services Saturday at 10:30 am at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. She was born in Braceville. Her husband, Harry Zimmerman, preceded her in death. Mrs. Zimmerman was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and Jersey County Farm Bureau. Her survivors are 3 daughters, Mrs. Milton (Esther) Moir, Mrs. Raymond (Lotus) Rafter, and Mrs. William (Margaret) Bly, of Joliet; 1 Son, Raymond Fleischauer of Joliet; 2 sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Biskie of Joliet and Mrs. Hannah Koger of Detroit, Michigan; 15 grandchildren and 18 g-grandchildren.


ZIMMERMAN. Died 24-05-1972. Paul E. Zimmerman, 60, a farmer of New Haven, Missouri, formerly of Jersey County, died unexpectedly on may 24 enroute to the Washington, Missouri hospital, following a heart attack. He had been in ill health for some time and had suffered from time to time from leg and abdominal injuries received during WW II. Final services were held Saturday afternoon at the Fertig Funeral Home in New Haven. Interment was in St. John cemetery at Mt. Home, Missouri. He was born near Grafton September 25, 1921 the son of Edward & Edna (Stierman) Zimmerman. He had attended schools in Elsah and Grafton and was graduated from Jerseyville high school in 1939. Mr Zimmerman had engaged in building with his father before entering the armed forces in September, 1942. He served with the Air Force in England as a heavy bomber pilot during the bombing of Germany and was wounded over Hamburg while returning from his 32nd mission. In 1954 he received a partial disability discharge from the Air Force. He attained the rank of captain. His survivors are his wife, the former Betty Banderman of St. Clair, Missouri; his father, Edward Zimmerman of Chautauqua; 1 brother, Daniel, a missionary to Africa who is presently residing in Jerseyville; and 1 sister, Mrs. James (Mary) Pepper also of Jerseyville.


ZIMMERMAN. Russell L. Zimmerman, 62, died at 12:10 pm Sunday, January 1, 1989 at Alton Memorial hospital, following a brief illness. Born in Jersey County, he was the son of the late Max E. & Bertha (Depper) Zimmerman Sr. On March 29, 1951, in Pocahontas, Arkansas, he married Kathleen (Lagemann) Zimmerman and she survives. Also surviving are 3 daughters, Terri White of Grafton, Linda Zimmerman of Pueble, Oc, and Sheila Zimmerman Roe of Alton; 2 brothers, Max and Donald Zimmerman, both of Grafton; and 2 Sisters, Alice Young of Alton and Doris Cates of Belle Fontaine, Ohio. 1 sister preceded him in death. Visitation is 11 am Wednesday until time of services at 1 pm at Elias-Smith Funeral Home in Alton. Rev. Kenneth C. Dobson will officiate. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian church of Alton building fund.


ZIMMERMAN. Died 07-04-1980. Terri Lea Zimmerman, 23, of Rural Route 1 Dow, died at 11:19 pm April 7 at St. Joseph hospital, Alton of injuries received in a one car accident that occurred at 2:56 am April 6. According to the accident report by Trooper Lyle Lee, Ms. Zimmerman was traveling north on Route 100, 2 miles south of Route 109 when she ran off the road on a curve and struck a utility pole. Born February 7, 1957 in Alton, she was the daughter of Warren & Virginia (Estes) Farmer. Her survivors are her parents; 3 brothers, Travis D. Farmer, all of Rural Route 1 Dow; paternal grandmother Marie Farmer of Wood River and maternal grandmother, Winnie Estes, Marion. The funeral was conducted Thursday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev. Kenneth Schmidgall with burial in Newbern cemetery. Memorials may be given to charity of one’s choice.


ZIMMERMAN. Died 17-07-1978. William Howard Zimmerman, 60, died at 9:37 am July 17, at Jersey Community hospital. Services for the Rural Route 1 Grafton resident where held at 2 pm July 20 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Grafton. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery. A farmer and WW II veteran, he was born October 13, 1918 in St. Charles, Missouri, the son of Ernest William & Ella May (Slaten) Zimmerman. His survivors are his wife, Ouretha (Duff) Zimmerman; 2 son, Alan Zimmerman of Grafton and Robert of Louisiana; 5 grandchildren; 4 daughters; Susan, Beth and Lisa Zimmerman of Grafton and Karen Raub of Terre Haute, Indiana. And 1 sister, Pauline Conner of St. Louis, Missouri.


ZIPPRICH. Charles J. Zipprich, 96, of Grafton died Thursday am October 29, 1981, at the Calhoun Comprehensive Home following 2 months of failing health. Born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Frank & Melissa (Comdon) Zipprich, he was employed at American Cynamid Company, and also for 33 years operated the West End Grocery in Grafton, retiring in 1973. He had worked for a number of years as assistant cashier of the Bank of Calhoun County before moving to Grafton. On November 5, 1924, he married Zitta (Freeman) Zipprich in Grafton and she survives. Also surviving are 1 daughter, Mary Brecker of Grafton; 1 Son Laverne of Albuquerque, New Mexico; 5 grandchildren; 1 sister, Margaret Dirksmeyer of Carlinville; and 1 brother, Oswin of Kampsville. 1 son, Rev. Charles Zipprich, preceded him in death several years ago. Visitation was held Sunday at Staten Funeral Home in Alton, where a rosary was recited at 8 pm. At 8:15 pm a chalice presentation was made by Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus of Jerseyville. A funeral mass was concelebrated at 11 am Monday at SS Peter and Paul Catholic church and burial was in St. Joseph cemetery. Memorials may be given to masses, Marquette high school and the religious committee of Piasa Bird Council of America.


ZIPPRICH. Jerome V. Zipprich, 71, died at 4:13 pm Sunday, June 14, 1987, at Alton Memorial hospital. The WW II Army veteran was a mechanic with Jerseyville Motor Company for 40 years and retired in 1981. He was born in Michael, a son of the late John & Mary (Traufler) Zipprich. On October 17, 1944, in Jerseyville, he married Marie (Goetten) Zipprich and she survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Barbara Zipprich of Jerseyville; 2 sons, James Zipprich of Jerseyville; and Michael Zipprich of Elsah; 2 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; and 3 brothers, Sylvester Zipprich of Ft. Neches, Texas, Gervase Zipprich of Jerseyville and Fred Zipprich of Augusta, Kansas. Visitation is scheduled 4-9 pm Tuesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 am Wednesday at Holy Ghost Catholic church in Jerseyville. Rev. William Hembrow and Msgr P. P. Heinen will concelebrate. Burial will be at St. Francis cemetery in Jerseyville, with military rites by Jerseyville American Legion Post 492. Memorials may be given to masses of Holy Ghost church where he was a member.


ZIPPRICH. Died 11-11-1966. Mrs. Mary Zipprich, of 704 W. Pine St., Jerseyville, was dead on arrival at Jersey Community hospital, following a head on crash of 2 autos on Route 16, west of Jerseyville on November 11. Requiem mass for Mrs. Zipprich, widow of John L. Zipprich, was offered at 9:30 am Monday at the church of the Holy Ghost in Jerseyville with Father Paul P. Heinen celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville where the rosary was recited at 8 pm Sunday. Mrs. Zipprich was born in Michael, October 4, 1891, a daughter of the Late Peter & Molle (Bellum) Traufler. Her survivors are 4 Sons, Jerome V. and Gervase P. both of Jerseyville, Sylvester J. of Portneches, Texas, and Fred B. Zipprich of Godfrey; 10 grandchildren, and 2 Brothers, Pete Traufler of Michael and Joe Traufler of St. Louis. She was a member of the Altar Society of the Church of Holy Ghost.


ZOEPHEL. Died 1924. Mrs. Marie Zoephel, 85, died at her home. Marie (Gerhans) Zoephel born in Plowen, Saxony, Germany, October 21, 1839. Married Charles Zoephel there in 1880 and came to America in July 1883 with husband and his 4 children; locating in St. Louis. They moved to Grafton in 1893. She leaves 2 step-sons, Albert Zoephel of Waukegan, Illinois and Max Zoephel of Grafton. Several step-grandchildren. Funeral from Methodist church, Rev. F. Glotfelty officiating and burial in IOOF cemetery.
