OGDEN. Nov. 1921: Nancy, daughter of David and Francie Applin, was born in Millstadt Township, St. Clair County, Illinois on 1 April 1832 and departed this life after an illness of exactly seven days, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Geo. Medford, Richwoods Township, Jersey County, Illinois on 22 October 1921. Aged 89 years, 6 months and 21 days. She was united in marriage with George Snow of Ohio in 1852. To this union five children were born, two of whom are still living. Mr. Snow passed away in 1865. After several years of care and guardianship of her children, she was again united in marriage. In 1868, she became the wife of Phelix Ogden of Missouri. To them were born three children, two of whom are still living, one son, Manly Ogden having preceded his mother eighteen years ago. Phelix Ogden died 14 December 1877. Mrs. Ogden made “home happy” for her children until all were married, then divided her time at their different homes, until in 1900, since then she lived with her daughter, Mrs. Geo. Medford. On 11 June 1890, she became a member of the Church of Christ of which she has ever been a faithful member. Practically all of her life was spent in Jersey county, here in this community, where by living a true, and neighborly Christian life, she made many friends both young and old, who mourn her departure. Her home was always a welcome place to her neighbors and also to children. Many fathers and mothers of today tell their children of the pleasant times spent at “grandmas.” She was always a welcome visitor in the neighbors’ homes where she administered acts of kindness in sickness and trouble. “Tried and true” feebly expresses the truth worth of her life as a kind patient and loving mother. This is also true of her life as a grandmother. Mrs. Ogden was a cripple the last nineteen years of her life, caused by a stroke of lightning when she was out on the lawn watching a storm. Though “on crutches” she patiently suffered and kept up the true brave spirit of her former years. All that could be, was done by loving hands to comfort the sufferer in her last days of illness. Now, she suffers no more, and knowing her as she was, we all feel confident that she will be met with the blessed words, “well done, thou good and faithful servant.” She leaves to mourn her, three Sons, David Snow of Nutwood, Worthington Snow of Hardin, Illinois., and Wm. Ogden of Nutwood, Illinois., one daughter, Mrs. Geo. Medford of Richwoods Township, one half-sister, Mrs. Kate Kirk of Grafton, Illinois., 12 grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends. “Sleep soft, beloved” we ….poem torn away.
