BUBB, Verna, died 14-08-1983. Verna Bubb, died Aug. 14 at Astoria hospital in Jacksonville. She was the wife of Harvey S Bubb, who was principal of Otterville school from 1951-55.
BUCHANAN, Margaret Irene (Ward), born 06-03-1878, died 05-1970, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Margaret Irene Buchanan, 92, of St. Louis, sister of Mrs. Ed Ringhausen Died at Lincoln County Hospital at Troy, MO. Orev. Robert E Larson officiated at services from Jacoby Brothers Funeral home in Jerseyville. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Born March 6, 1878 she was the daughter of the late Jonah & Mary (Plummer) Ward. Her husband was the late Henry Buchanan. She is survived by 2 Sons, Howard Wagener of St Louis and Earl Wagener of Chicago; 1 daughter, Mrs. Eva L. Crabtree of St Louis; 5 grandchildren; 3 sister, Mrs. Maude Lewis of Pompano Beach, FL, Mrs. Anna Richardson of Hammond, IN, and Mrs. Ed Ringhausen.
BUCHHOLZ, Charles, born 11-01-1865, Germany, died 06-09-1950, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Charles Buchholz, 86, a retired farmer of the Godfrey-Beltrees area, died Sept. 6, at Alton Memorial hospital. He had been ill at home and had been a patient at the hospital for 3 months. Funeral services were held at St Alphonsus church in Brighton. Father Philip Newman, pastor of the church, officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr Buchholz was born in Germany on Jan. 11, 1865. He came with his parents to the US at the age of 6 and settled with them in the Beltrees community. Later he moved to a farm near Godfrey where he had farmed until his retirement 15 years ago. He made his home prior to entering the hospital with a daughter, Mrs. Anna Oulson, in Godfrey. His wife, Barbara (Wagener) Buchholz, whom he married in 1890, preceded him in death in 1948. Surviving are 7 daughters, Mrs. Oulson, Mrs. Mary Whitley of Jerseyville, Mrs. Lena Wyman and Mrs. Kate Runtz of Godfrey, Mrs Clara Higdon of Brighton, Mrs. Theresa Moss and Mrs. Fern Bright of Griggsville; 3 sons, Tony of Godfrey, Joseph of AR, and Frank B Uchholz of MO. 1 son, Philip, died 1 yr ago. He also leaves 33 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
BUCHHOLZ, Gertrude, born 1830, died 06-1905. Mrs. Gertrude Bucholtz, 75, died at the county farm. Funeral conducted by Rev. J. B Wand from St. Michael church.
BUCK, Larry E., born 1970, Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois, died 25-01-1990. Larry E Buck, 20, and his wife, Michelle M. (Gerling) Buck, died of injuries sustained in an auto accident Jan. 25, 1990. The couple was married Sept. 1, 1989 in Edwardsville. Larry was an asbestos removal trainee and Michell was a nurse’s aide at Rosewood Care Center in Alton. He was born in Jerseyville, son of Mary (Vogel) Mitchell of Brighton and the late Larry Lee Buck. Surviving are his mother, his grandparents, Gene & Bernice Buck of Medora and Katherine Huff of the state of Washington; 2 brothers, Dennis Buck of Godfrey and Jason Buck of Brighton; 2 sisters, Sherri Brockaw of Pensacola, FL, and Amy Buck of Brighton.
BUCK, Lewis, born 03-02-1908, Ashburn, died 28-05-1984, buried Scenic Hill cemetery. Lewis Buck, 76, died May 28, at St. Joseph hospital in Alton . He was born Apr. 3, 1908 in Ashburn, MO to the late Asa C. & Ima (Northcut) Buck and was a cook at Alton State Mental hospital. His wife, Katie Marie (Irwin) Buck, died March 11, 1981. His is survived by 1 nephew, Philip Armour of Hannibal, MO and 1 Sis-in-law, Luella Sutton of Grafton. His parents, wife, 2 brothers, and 1 sister preceded him in death. Visitation and services were from Jacoby Brothers funeral home, Grafton. Rev Leo Beller officiated and burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery.
BUCK, Michelle (Gerling), born Highland, Madison County, Illinois, died 25-01-1990. Michelle Buck, 21, daughter of Paul & Gladys (Mcdermott) Gerling of Cottage Hills, was pronounced died at the scene of an auto accident, which also killed her husband. She had married Larry E Buck, Sept. 1, 1989, in Edwardsville. Surviving are her parents, 5 sisters, Linda Mcelis and Melody Haring Both of Edwardsville, Kelly Hahs of Bethalton and Samantha and Stephanie Gerling, Both of Cottage Hills; and her Grandparents, Charlotte McDermott, Paul W Gerling and Mary Lautner, all of Edwardsville. Visitation was from Elias-smith funeral home in Alton, where a combined service was held.
BUCKLES, John, died 14-02-1880, buried Otterville cemetery. John Buckles, sr, 81, died at the home of John Jr., on Feb. 14, he had been a member of the Presbyterian church in Virden, IL. Rev Mr. Tarbet had the funeral service and burial was in Otterville cemetery. Pallbearers were: Addison Green, Joseph Marshaw, A Calhoun, Moses Hamor, Jacob Utt, J. Dodson, Daniel Cornelius and —- Ross.
BUCKLES, John E., born 10-12-1870, Newbern, Jersey County, Illinois, died 1953, buried Otterville cemetery. John E Buckles, 83, died at a hospital in Pueblo, CO. Word was receivedhere by his niece, Mrs. Walter Knight. Mr Buckles was a son of the late John & Mahala (Chappell) Buckles and was born Dec. 10, 1870 at Newbern. He had been away from this area about 48 years. Funeral services were held at Davis funeral home in Pueblo and the body was taken to the Denver crematory. The ashes were returned to Jersey county for burial in the family lot at Otterville.
BUCKLES, Mahala, born 1830, died 25-11-1911, buried Noble cemetery. Mahala Buckles, 81, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Logan in Plymouth, in, Nov.25. Remains were brougt to Jersey County and funeral from her old home, now residence of E E Reed, near Dow. Rev Wm. Logan, her son-in-law officiated with burial in Noble cemetery, Otterville. Survivors are Mrs. E E Reed, Mrs. Wm. Logan, Richard and John Buckles of St. Louis and Charles Buckles.
BUEHLMAN, Joseph W., born 1922, Newbern, Jersey County, Illinois, died 05-1985. Joseph W Buehlman, 63, of Godfrey, died at St. Anthony hospital, Alton. Born in Newburn, a son of the late William & Sadie (Gray) Buehlman, he was a millwright at Alton Box Board for 35 yrs, retiring in June 1982. He married Catherine (Geisen) Buehlman on June 30, 1942 at St. Mary Catholic church, Alton, she survives. Also surviving are 2 daughters, Deborah Lovell of Godfrey and Sandra Donnelly of Naples, FL; 2 sons, Richard of Union City, TN and Dr Kenneth Buehlman of Vincennes, IN; 5 grandchildren; and a -incomplete
BUESEN, Nicholas, born 1840, Holstein, Germany, died 1921, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Captain Nicolas Buesen, 81 yrs, 1 mo, 29 days, died at Lutheran hospital, St Louis, after a brief illness. He had been at the hospital about 4 weeks. A change for the worse came Sat afternoon, and Mrs. N B Porter and Mrs I D Snedeker, sister-in-law and niece of Captain Buesen were called to St. Louis. His step-son and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Gus Casavant of Chicago, were also called to St. Louis. Another stepson, Leo Casavant, arrives this evening from Detroit, but Louis Casavant of New York cannot be here for the funeral. Mrs Snedeker returned Sun evening from St. Louis, but Mrs. Porter and other relatives will accompany the body to Jerseyville on the train Tuesday am. It was taken to Mrs. Porter’s home where the funeral was held. Rev L. W. Porter officiated. Interment was in Oak Grove mausoleum. His nephews, Herman and Walter Gossrau of St. Louis, Otto Kramer of Alton, Paul Porter of Chicago, Alfred Figgen of Quincy, and Fred W Eck of Jerseyville were the active pallbearers. Honorary pall bearers were Judges Charles S White, Fred Jacobs, Jacob Wagner, Frank Miller, Isaac D Snedeker, John Brokamp, John J. Mcguire and Edward Cross. Among those from out of town attending services were: Capt John Herman, Mrs. R Gossrau, Mr. & Mrs. Otto Gossrau and Daughter, Irma, Mr. & Mrs. Herman Gossrau, Walter Gossrau, and Miss Tessie Bertman of St. Louis; Mr & Mrs. O Kramer and son, Carl, Mr. & Mrs. Meyer and the latter’s mother, Mrs. Kramer, Mrs. Bertha Bertman and dauters, Misses Bertha Marie and Louise Bertman, Mr. Elble and Charles Seibold of Alton; Mr. & Mrs Gus Casavant, Paul Porter and Mrs. Geo D Doge of Chicago; Leo Dasavant of Detroit, MI; Alfred H. Figgen of Quincy; Mr. & Mrs. John Bertman of Rockbridge and Mrs. Minnie Sloan of Carrollton. Captain Buesen, was one of the best known men in Jerseyville and had a picturesque career and was a river boat captain when the river traffic was in the days of its youth and romance. Capt Buesen was born in Holstein, Germany, and came to the USA at the age of 18. When he was unable to speak the language. He attended night school while being employed in the coal business and saved money with which he later entered the river trade business. ——-a, Missouri accepted a position in a dry goods house. With this firm he remained until the latter part of 1864 when he, together with 2 companions left for Vicksburg, Mississippi, where they expected to engage jointly in some mercantile business but owing to the war; they found things so unsettled that they did not think it prudent to venture into business at that place. Consequently they left Vicksburg and returned north as far as Memphis, TN; but as they did not meet with better encouragement in the latter city, his two companions left him and took passage on a steamer for St. Louis, while he remained in mMemphis and shortly afterwards took a position with a Mississippi river pilot as steersman on the steamer “Bell Creole” and from that time he followed steam-boating until the yera 1883, when on account of failing health he retired from the river. Capt Buesen has steamboated on nearly all of the western rivers, but most of his services were rendered on the Upper Missouri and Yellowstone, in the capacity of clerk, captain or pilot, as occasions required. He was in charge of the steamer “Key West” when that boat made the famous exploring trip up the Yellowstone river in Apr. 1873. This boat was sent up that stream by order of Gen Phil Sheridan to ascertain whether that river could be navigated as far as Powder river; the latter a tributary of the Yellowstone about 200 mi from its mouth. The boat after a careful sounding of the channel in a great many places, made a successful trip to its required destination, for which Capt Buesen had the honor of being rewarded with the first pilot’s license issued for that river by the US government. In the capaciyy of pilot, he became very well known to traders and rivermen between St. Louis and the far northern points on the Mississippi in South Dakota. He acquired wealth and at one time he wrote a book on river trade in the northwest. While Capt of the Silver City, Buesen made many trips to Yanctown, SD when practically all of the river trading was being done by indians. On one occasion Buesen had as his passengers members of the original Seventh United States Cavalry, commanded by Gen Custer, with whom Buesen was well acquainted. On the 21 apr, ???? Capt Buesen was united in marriage to Mrs. Minnie Casavant, —— f Louis J. Casavant. The body was taken to the a Kron Undertaking company.
BUFFINGTON, born 1822, died 22-05-1907. Mrs. Frances Buffington, 85, a former resident of Jerseyville, died at her home in Litchfield, May 22.
BUFFINGTON, Clark C., born 1844, Exeter, Scott County, Illinois, died 30-12-1881. Clark C. Buffington, 37, died Dec. 30, 1881 at the home of his parents in Jerseyville. He was born in Exeter, Scott County, IL. When 6 they moved to jeseyville. He finished his education in the old academy that used to be conducted in son’s hall. Next he established and carried on with his brother, Cyrus in a durg store. Cyrus now of Indianola, IA. Clark enlisted in Army Co I 61st Reg of IL Infantry, was promoted to rank of 2nd Lt. Served 3 years. Taught school for a time. Chief clerk in Ware’s drug store. Funeral from Methodist church.
BUFFINGTON, Clinton G., born 22-05-1858, Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois, died 1926, buried Litchfield cemetery. Dr Clinton G. Buffington, died at his home in Decatur. Mrs R B Tweedy, nNiece, received word on Mon. Funeral there and burial at Litchfield. He was born in Jerseyville May 22, 1858. In 1881 he graduated from St. Louis Medical College. He located at Fieldon and gradually extended his practice to include Jersey, Green and Calhoun countyies. 40 years ago he went to Litchfield to practice and later moved to Decatur. He was the last of a family of 7 children, decendents of Dr & Mrs. J. f Buffington. He leaves his wife, 1 son, Ld Buffington of Yoakum, TX. Mrs Robert Newton of Jerseyville is also a cousin of the deceased.
BUFFINGTON, Joseph, born 1806, Chester County, Pennsylvania, died 1883. Dr Joseph Buffington, 78, fell from a ladder in his barn. He was born in Chester county, PA. In 1806. In 1840, he married Frances (Gordon) Buffington. She is a sister to Mrs. Wm. Keith. They moved to Jerseyville in 1849. Surviving are his wife, 4 sons, Clinton and Colby, both doctors and Cyrus and Clark, both druggists; 1 daughter, Clara. In late years he taught school.
BUHMAN, Edwin William, born 06-07-1896, Springfield, Missouri, died 15-12-1975, buried Valhalla cemetery. Edwin William Buhman, 79, died Dec. 15 at his home. Visitation and services were held from Jacoby Brothers Funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev A A Ledebuhr officiated and interment was in Valhalla Mem Park cemetery. A WWI veteran, he was born on July 6, 1896 in Springfield, MO, a son of Henry & Sophia (Byers) Buhman. Buhman was a retired maintenance man at the former Luer Packing Comapny and West Jr. High School, Alton. He was a member of Jerseyville Senior Citizens Club and WWI barracks. Survivors are his widow, Ruth (Breitweiser) Buhman; 2 sons, William E of Marshalltown, IA and Ralph P of Dubuque, IA; 3 daughters, Mrs. Viola Burns of S Roxanna, IA, Mrs. Harvey (Marie) Menneger, Dell Rapids, SD, and Mrs. Dorothy Shock, Waterloo, IA; 2 step daughters Mrs. James (Mary) Webb, East St. Louis and Mrs. Paul (Helen) Cope of Alton; 2 brothers, Raymond of Alhambra, Ca, and Erwin of Waverly, IA; and 1 sister, Mrs. Letha Anderson of Alhambra, -incomplete
BUHRER, Helen (Brooks), born 20-07-1901, Jersey County, Illinois, died 07-06-1988, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Helen Buhrer, 86, of Carrollton, died June 7, 1988 at Carlinville Terrace Nursing Home. She was born July 20, 1901 in Jersey County to the late Fred Land & Clara E Brooks. She married Dr W G. Buhrer on June 27, 1946. He died Jan. 2, 1969. She was a telephone operator. Survivors include a step daughter, Mabel Stringham of Bacaville, CA; 1 sister Pauline Hortin of Urbana; 1 brother Arthur Brooks of Godfrey; 1 step granddaughter; and 2 step great grandchildren. Graveside rites were held at Oak Grove cemetery with Rev Mike Michels officiating. Memorials may be given to Multiple Sclerosis Society.
BUIS, Viola, died 06-03- , buried Cemetery Upper Alton cemetery. Mrs. Viola Buis, 80, of Rr1 Jerseyville died March 6 at Eunice Smith Nursing Home. Funeral rites were conducted from Gent Funeral home with Rev. Earl Clagg officiating. Burial was in Upper Alton cemetery.Survivors are her husband, Marcus Buis; 2 sons, George and Jesse, both of Jerseyville; 3 daughters, Mrs. Edward (Bessie) Lay of Walton, KY, Mrs Clinton (Mary) Hodge of Wood River and Mrs. Albert (Vera) Wiegand of Alton; 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
BULL, Asher A., born 1883, Gilead, Greene County, Illinois, died 10-1968, buried Oak Wood cemetery. Asher A Bull, 85 yrs-2 mo-28 days, died at a physicians office where he had been moved by ambulance. The Jerseyville resident was a son of the late George W & Mary (Carrico) Bull. He was born in Gilead. He is survived by his wife, Clara M. Bull; 3 daughters, Mrs. Gus (Mary) Orban of Brighton, Mrs. Ralph (Elizabaeth) Bauser and Mrs. Juitte (Norma) Gill of Alton; 2 sons, Floyd Harold Bull of Jerseyville, and Edward N Bull of Bowling Green, KY; 18 grandchildren; and 17 g-grandchildren. 5 children, Leslie and Rosalie, and 3 infants preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at Gospel Assembly Church. Rev Harry Frazer and Rev. Louis Kappler officiated and burial was in Oak Wood Cemetery (Upper Alton). Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville.
BULLIER, Aloys, died 1911. Aloys Bullier, Assistant Cashier of the Bank of Calhoun, was fataly injured in an auto accident Sun pm. Dr Stephen Flatt, Jos Schmieder, Aloys Bullier, and Ray Pinro, (chauffeur), were returning from Deer Plain, where they had attended a Woodman’s picnic. It was in the night and they met a team on a hill between Brussels and Hardin. In attempting to pass, the chauffeur lost control of his auto, and the machine started up a steep embankment and turned turtle. Flatt and Schmieder jumped, but Bullier and Pinro were caught under the machine. Bullier was crushed so badly that he died from the injuries Mon. afternoon. Dr Flatt sustained an injury to his leg and Schmieder on the head. Pinro received only slight injuries. Aloys Bullier was a bright young of exemplary character. He had been Assistant Cashier of the Bank of Calhoun since its organization. He is a step son of Capt M. A Kamp, of Kampsville, presisent of the bank. Mr Bullier leaves a wife and 1 child.
BUNGAY, Marguerite (Callahan), born Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois, died 13-05-1978. Mrs. Marguerite Bungay, born and reared in Jerseyville, died May 13, in Florida. She was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. George Callahan sr. She is survived by her husband, Harry; 1 son, 1 daughter, and 1 brother, George of Syracuse, NY.
BUNSE, Arabelle L. (Erwin), born 07-03-1910, Jersey County, Illinois, died 27-07-1976, buried St. Francis cemetery. Arabelle L. Bunse, 66, of Jerseyville, died July 27, at Jerseyville Care center. She had been in ill health for some time. She was born in Jersey County on March 7, 1910, a daughter of John & Alice (Boyer) Erwin. Mrs Bunse was a member of Holy Ghost Altar Society, Democrat Women’s Club, Eagles Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary. She was employed at Kranich drug store for a number of years and had formerly worked at the Jerseyville Branch of International Shoe Company. She is survived by 1 son, Edward E Bunse of East Alton; 1 grandchild; 2 sister, Mrs. William (Evelyn) Goshorn, Summerville, SC and Mrs. Mark (Marietta) Devening, Jerseyville; 4 brothers, Norman Erwin, Owen Erwin and Lawrence Erwin of Fieldon and James Erwin of Jerseyville. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward C. Bunse who died Sept. 21, 1953, and 3 brothers. Visitation and rosary were at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home in Jerseyville. Funeral mass was held July 29, at Holy Ghost church with Rev. Robert Becker celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery. Memorials may be given to American Cancer Society.
BUNSE, Caroline, born 1829, died 06-12-1906, buried St. Mary cemetery. Mrs. Caroline Bunse, 77, died at home 10 miles northwest of Jerseyville, Dec. 6, 1906. Funeral from St. Mary Catholic church, Fieldon. Rev F A Marks.
BUNSE, Clara Marie (Homer), born 27-01-1905, Jersey County, Illinois, died 06-07-1978, buried St. Mary cemetery. Clara Marie Bunse, 73, formerly of Jerseyville, died July 6, at St. Joseph hospital, Alton. She was born Jan. 27, 1905 in Jersey county, a daughter of James & Laura (Davis) Homer. Her survivors are her husband, Clement Bunse whom she married June 22 1944 in TN; 3 sons, Leroy Hodge, Elvis Hodge and Paul Hodge of Alton; 3 daughters, Clara Ayres and Margie Sweet Ofalton and Mary Ketterer of Loveland, CO; 1 brother, Charles Homer of Alton, and 9 grandchildren. Visitation was from Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral mass was from Holy Ghost Church, Father William Hembrow celebrant. Burial was in St Mary cemetery.
BUNSE, Clement Charles, born 07-02-1909, Fieldon, Jersey County, Illinois, died 23-07-1985, buried St. Mary cemetery. Clement Charles Bunse, 76, of Jerseyville, died July 23, at Jersey Community hospital. He was born Feb. 7, 1909, in Fieldon to the late Henry Bunse & Mary (Blaeser) Bunse. He married Clara Marie (Hodge) Bunse, June 22, 1943. She died July 6, 1978. He was a WWII veteran and worked as a carpenter. He was a member of Holy Ghost church and the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include stepsons, Elvis and Paul Hodge, both of Alton; daughter Mary Ketterer of Loveland, CO; step daughter, Clara Ayers and Marie Sweet both of Alton; and several step grandchildren. Visitaion and rosary were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral. home in Jerseyville. Funeral mass was held July 25, with Rev William Hembrow as concelebrant. Burial was in St. Mary cemetery, Fieldon.
BUNSE, Corinne E. (Sabatello), born Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, died 05-09-1991, buried St. Mary cemetery. Corinne e Bunse, died Sept. 5, 1991 at Christian hospital nw in St. Louis. She retired in 1988 as a speech therapist from Jersey Community unit district 100, after 37 years of service and had initiated the speech therapy department in 1949 for the district. Mrs Bunse was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma professional sorority and the Illinois Speech and Hearing Association Born in Chicago, she was a daughter of the late Michael L. & Adele (Passarella) Sabatello. She married Charles “Ed” Bunse Nov 6, 1954, in Chicago. Surviving are her husband; 1 daughter, Lisa Bunse of Houston, TX; and 3 sisters, Mary Lou Spitzer, Dolores Sabatello and Diana Iacoo all of Chicago. Visitation was held from Jacoby-Schroeder funeral home in Jerseyville, rosary recited. Funeral mass at Holy Ghost Catholic church in Jerseyville, with Rev. William Hembrow as celebrant. Burial was in St. Mary cemetery, Fieldon. Memorials may be given to American Cancer Society or masses.

His son, Charles Edward, was called and took him to Jersey Community hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrval. He had suffered from a heart ailment the past few years. Visitation and rosary were at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home in Jerseyville. Funeral services were from Holy Ghost church July 22. Requiem mass was celebrated by Rev. Leonard Rathgeb and interment was in St. Mary cemetery, Fieldon. Mr Bunse was a son of the late Henry & Mary (Blaeser) Bunse and was born in Jersey County on May 9, 1905. He was a member of Knights of Columbus and Moose, Elks and Eagles Lodges. Surviving are his wife, Freda, son Charles Edward, and 5 brothers, Frank, Clement and Raymond Bunse of Jerseyville and Henry and Fred Bunse of Alton.

He had been injured in accident and had been previously hospitalized at Homer G. Phillips hospital, St. Louis. He was moved to Alton where he had been a patient for 1 week and his death was unexpected. A construction laborer, he was born Apr. 16, 1921 in Jersey county, a son of Henry & Mary (Blaeser) Bunse and was a WWII veteran. Bunse was a member of Holy Ghost church, Foruth Degree Knights of Columbus, Moose Lodge, Eagles Lodge, Worthey Post American Legion and VFW, Jerseyville, Alton Labor Local Union and was Democratic Committeman in the 1st Precinct. Survivors are his widow, Wanda (Ulery) Bunse, a RN at Jersey Community hospital; 2 sons, Gerald and Michael of Jerseyville; 3 daughters, Barbara of Osceola, AR, Theresa and Carol at home; 4 brothers, Clem and Frank Bunse of Jerseyville, Henry Bunse of Alton and Fred Bunse of Bunker Hill. His parents and 2 brothers preceded him in death. Visitation and rosary were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Funeral mass was celebrated at Holy Ghost church with Rev. Robert Heintz celebrant. Interment was in St. Mary cemetery. Military services at graveside were conducted by American Legion and VFW.

He was a member of Pt Boat Association of Memphis, TN, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1308 and YMCA Retiree’s Club, both in Alton. Born in Jersey county, Jan. 1, 1920, he was a son of the late John & Barbara (Dunnigin) Bunse. He married Anita (Hufker) Bunse in Alton Oct. 25, 1947. She died June 20, 1981. He married the former Martha H. (Barnhorn) Jones Oct. 15, 1983, in Godfrey. She survives. Also surviving are 2 daughters, Elaine Bunse Bullens of Peoria and Diane Bunse Rizzo of Holland, MI; 1 stepdaughter, Jean Grimes of Godfrey; 1 stepson, Le Roy Jones of Elsah; and 2 step grandchildren. 1 son, Alan Bunse, preceded him in death. Visitation was held at Staten funeral home in Alton, with prayer service at 7:30. Rev Virgil Mank celebrated a funeral mass at St. Ambrose catholic church in Alton. He was a member of Rockbridge Baptist Church. Born in Rockbridge on March 30, 1901, he was a son of the late James & Minnie (Coonrod) Burger. He married Helen (Ryan) Burger in Jerseyville Sept. 22, 1926. She survives. Also surviving are 3 sons, Gerald Burger of Carrollton, Dwight Burger of Wayne City, and Willard Glen Burger of Bassville, AR; 1 Daughter, Bernice Kesinger of Waverly; 13 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 3 g-great grandchildren; 1 brother, Russell Burger of Greenfield; and 3 sisters, Anna Pruitt of Greenfield, Edna Coryell of Alton and Mabel Ryan of Carrolltton. 1 grandson, 4 brothers and 4 sisters preceded him in death. BURGER, Minnie Mae (Coonrod), born Rockbridge, Macoupin County, Illinois, died -04-1942, buried Witt cemetery. Minnie Mae Burger, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Ryan. Funeral services were held Apr. 21 at Rockbridge Baptist Church, with Rev F. L. Crouch officiating and burial in Witt cemetery. Pallbearers: Avery Pitxhford, Meade Cannedy, James Pruitt, Eric Carney, Henry Ryan and Burl Clark. Mrs Burger was the mother of 17 children, 4 dying in infancy and 1 daughter at the age of 23. She was born at Rockbridge and as a small child went with her parents, the late Mr. & Mrs Newport Coonrod, to TX where they lived for a few years and also in the Indian territory. They returned to Illinois by covered wagon drawn by oxen, fording rivers and camping at by the roadside. Two of Mrs. Burger’s sons served in WWI and shortly before her death she received word that her grandson, Virgil Louis Pitchford of Rockbridge, son of Mrs. Artie Pitchford, was with General Mcarthur’s Forces. In addition to 12 children, Mrs. Burger is survived by 40 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Lawrence f Burgess, 28, of Jerseyville, was electrocuted Mon. afternoon when a citizen band radio antenna he was installing struck an electrRic wire. He was pronounced dead on arrival March 7, at Jersey Community hospital. He was born in Carmi on Apr. 24, 1948, a son of Louis F & Oma Ellen (Mayberry) Burgess. Burgess was a machine operator at Laclede Steel in Alton. He is survived by his widow, Vicky Lynn (Freshour) Burgess, whom he married Oct. 16, 1976; ;1 daughter, Aapril Burgess of Elsah; 2 sisters, Mrs. William (Wanda) Schaefer and Mrs. Darrell (June) Nash of Jerseyville; 3 brothers, Otis Burgess and Silas Burgess of Jerseyville and Wayne Burgess of Edwardsville. His parents and 1 brother preceded him in death. Services were held March 10 at State St. Baptist church with Rev. L. E. Hutchinson officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.

Richard Earl Burk, 86, of Jerseyville died Jan. 26, at Jerseyville care center following a lengthy illness. Services were conducted at Smith funeral home, Alton with burial in Wanda cemetery, S Roxana. He was employed at the former International Shoe company plant in Jerseyville until retiring as a foreman. Born in Brighton, he was the son of the late John & Lillian (Paddock) Burk. He married Susetta (Harrington) Burk who died in 1947 and later married the former Amy (Paddock) Kessinger in 1949. His survivors are his wife; 5 children and step children; Maxine Bechtold, Godfrey, Doris Baker of Jerseyville, Lois Wallace of Houston, TX, Richard Burk of Hartford and J. T Kessinger of East Alton; 10 grandchildren; 13 g-grandchildren; 2 g-great grandchildren; and 4 Brothers, Ben of Wood River, Jack of Bethalto, Russell of Alton and James of Brighton.
BURKE, Elizabeth (Hutchinson), born 05-05-1809, Montgomery, Massachusetts, died 11-01-1881. Elizabeth Hutchinson Burke, was born in Montgomery, MA, May 5, 1809. She was married to Josiah Seads, Apr. 15, 1833; was widowed June 26, 1847. Jan 19, 1854, she married Geo W Burke, and removed with him to Jerseyville in Feb. of the same year. Where her home has been since. She experienced religion in her youth, united with First Presbyterian church of Jerseyville by letter in the year 1854, and has maintained in it an exemplary life. She has had 3 children, one of whom, Mrs. Wm. Kingsley, survives to mourn her loss. An ernest, praying, bible reading, alms-giving christian, lamented by her husband and daughter and missed by the community in which she lived, was called to her reward, when on Tues, 11th, after an illness of 6 weeks, she sweetly fell asleep in Jesus and declares the apostle (i thes. 7:13) I would not have you ignorant concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope, for if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him, wherefore comfort one another with these words.”
BURKE, George W., born 1807, Vermont, died 04-1893. George Burke, 86, died at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Kingsley. Mr Burke was a striking figure and remarkable man. He was born in Vermont in 1807, educated in NY, came to Jersey County in 1837. He entered the land, 160 acres, on which he lived (now in city limits and laid out the first addition to Jersey and named every street from noted abolitionists. Joshua Giddings, Owne P Lovejoy, etc. He said he was Whig from principle and abolitionist from religious conviction. Because of the pro-slavery attitude of the Presbyterian church, he, with others, organized the Congregational church, which lived in this city for 6 years. He then took his membership to Chesterfield and after the war brought it back to the Presbyterian church. Known far and wide before the war as an abolitionist, he was called “negro” Burke and runaway negroes flocked to his house, and he helped them on their way to Canada. He was known as an agent of the “underground railway”. The route was across the river at Jersey Landing and on to Chicago. Burke was rotten-egged in the old schoolhouse on his land, where he and others of his faith were holding a meeting. He ran for his life and hid under a bridge nearby. He always boasted of his abolition record, and when Elijah Lovejoy was killed at Alton, he strongly denounced the murder and was held in reproach for his sentiments, which were identical with those of the martyr. Mr Burke strongly resembled John Brown of Kansas notoriety. He was a friend of the negro at all times. He spent his wealth upon them and died poor and blind. The negro citizens will doubtless eErect a monument to the memory of one among the last of the company of men who supported Elijah P Lovejoy at Alton in his efforts to maintain his anit-slavery of free soil paper.

BURKE, James. James Burke, 85, former well known resident of Jersey county, died at Imperial, NE. Word was received in telegrams to Mayor Murray B Voorhees and John Simmons, former neighbors. No details were available, but friends believed he had been stricken suddenly. Burk resided for many years on a farm in the Paradise neighborhood and was a veteran of the civil war. He went to Imperial, NE, 35 years ago to engage in the real estate business and has been active in that line of work. He was twice married. His first wife Was Mollie (Chapman) Burke of Jersey County whom he married after his return from the war. 1 son, Walter, was born to this union, and is a resident of Denver, CO. His second marriage was to Miss Susan Eldredge of Brighton, who with 2 daughters, and 1 son, all living in Imperial, survive him.

Ethel Burley, 73, of Alton, died Tuesday Oct. 21 in Villa Terrace Convalescent home in Alton where she had been a patient for only 4 days. Mrs Burley was the widow of James gordon Burley, and had been failing health since the death of her husband 15 months ago. She was a daughter of the late George & Eliza Ann (Rhodes) Smith and was born at Elsah, July 9, 1879. While at Elsah she had affiliated with the Methodist Church and had maintained her membership there. With the exception of her childhood and about 20 years in Granite City, she had resided all her life in Alton. She was married Apr. 11, 1894 in Jerseyville to James Gordon Burley. She is survived by 1 daughter, Mrs Joseph Winters of Alton, 1 son Forrest Burley of Alton; 2 brothers, W. H. Smith of Alton and George Edward Smith of Los Angeles, CA and 2 granddaughters. Funeral rites were held Oct. 24, at Gent funeral home in Alton and burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park.

He had resided in Alton since 1907 with the exception of about 20 years in Granite City. He was a retired Illinois terminal railroad foreman. He was married Apr. 10, 1894 to Ethel (Smith) Burley, who survives. He also leaves 1 daughter, Mrs. Joseph B Winters, and 1 son, Forrest Burley of Alton.

BURLEY, Newston, born 1834, died 13-03-1896. Newton Burley, 76, died March 13, 1896 at his home (Bright’s disease). He came to Jersey County in 1833 from Scioto county, OH. He drifted around in the county till he settled in to work for John McDow. He married Martha Lacy. In 1853 he purchased a farm, 2 miles south East Newbern. Later years he came to Newbern. Father of 7 children, 6 of whom to survive. Funeral from Baptist Church. He leaves his aged wife and 6 children.

Born in Jersey County on March 7, 1923, he was a son of the late Frank & Goldie (Cross) Burnett. He married Jessie (Weller) Burnett in 1948, and she died in 1986. He later married Doloris (Bright) Eisenreich Burnett on Nov.30, 1987, in Las Vegas, NV. She survives. Also surviving are 2 stepdaughters, Shirley Closser of Drakeville, IA, and Annette Walsh of Ft. Worth, TX; 2 stepsons, Kenneth Weller of Jerseyville and Gary Eisenreich of Chatham, NJ; 8 step grandchildren; 4 stepgreat grandchildren; and 1 sister, Josephine Jaymes of IN. An infant brother preceded him in death. Visitation and services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home in Jerseyville. Where Masonic services were also held. Rev Mark Etter officiated at services with burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Memeorials may be given to Hope Lutheran church in Jerseyville.

She is survived by her husband Ernest; 1 son Kenneth Weller of Jerseyville; 1 daughter Shirley Closser of Drakesville, IA; 3 sisters, Eva Retherford of Jerseyville; Clara Gilbert of Carrollton and Mary Fraley of Annabelle, MO; 5 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. Robert Burns of Pennfifeld, NY, and David Burns of Omaha, NE. A son, Charles Gafney Burns, Jr., preceded him in death. Visitation from Jacoby-Schroeder funeral home. His parents, 1 daughter, 6 brother and 1 sister preceded him in death. Funral mass was held Apr. ll at St. Patrick chruch in Grafton with Father Patrick Morrow celebrant. Internment was in Sunset Hills Cemetery, Edwardsville. Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home in Jerseyville.
BURNS, Hugh, born 1865, Jersey County, Illinois, died 1928, buried St. Francis cemetery. Hugh Burns, 63, well-known farmer of the northeast side, dropped at his home. He had gone out to the barn to do some feeding and shortly after arriving there his wife saw him fall to the ground. She and their son, Marvin, hurried to the barn and found him dead. He had been in ill health for some time, with apoplexy. Born near Jerseyville on the same farm where he died and all his life had been spent there. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Daisy Burns, 1 son, Marvin Burns, and 1 granddaughter. Mr & Mrs. Marvin Burns made their home with his parents. Funeral was from St. Francis church, Rev. J. J. Clancy, celebrant with burial in St. Francis cemetery.

Maurice Burns, 72, died at St. Joseph hospital in Alton, where he had been a patient for 16 days. Mr Burns was vice-pres and cashier of the State Bank of Jerseyville. Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville and rosary was recited. Requiem mass was celebrated at St. Frances church by Rev. Father Francis Lee and discourse was given by Father Roger Simpson of Virginia formerly assistant pastor here. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery. Mr Burns, a son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Edward S Burns, was born here Sept. 16, 1895. He was educated in the local school system, later attended the Banking and Commerce School of St. Louis University. He was a WWI veteran. For 30 years he was associated with Citizens & First National Bank of Alton and came to the bank in Jerseyville 21 years ago. He was senior trustee of St. Francis church. His fraternal affiliations were with the Jerseyville Council, Knights of Columbus, and the Local Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Survivors are 1 sister, Mrs. Charles H. (Hazel) Moore of Alton and 1 brother, Edward Leo Burns of Hollywood, CA.

Maria Burns, 82, nee Dwyre, who was for half a century a resident of Jersey county, succumbed to the infirmities of old age at her home, No 8 Penrose St., Jerseyville, Dec. 26. She hailed from Ireland, where she was born Dec. 26, 1831. Having bloomed into woman hood she came to the United States and in 1856 she plighted her troth to Peter Burns at Buffalo, NY. They later came to Jersey County and engaged in farming. 8 children were born to them, 2 sons, Edward and Henry dying in infancy. Son Peter was claimed by the relentless reaper at age 19. Rev J. J. Driscoll celebrated a requiem high mass and then the earthly remains of the venerable lady were consigned to their last resting place on St. Frances Xavier’s cemetery. Pallbearers were Dr L. G. Giers, John Horn, John Dunphy, John Barren, Dave Carroll and Robert Wall. Survivors are 3 sons, William and Edward of Jerseyville and John Burns of Fieldon; 2 Daughters, Mrs. Clover Short and Miss Kate Burns, the latter was taking tender care of her mother; 11 grandchildren and 1 g-grandchild. Her husband, Peter, died about 30 years ago. Dr & Mrs. Close and also Mrs. Short of Auburn, IL were among those from afar who attended the last rites and paid thelast tribute of love to the deceased.

Marie Sylvia Burns, 85, died July 26 in Greenwood Manor nursing home. She was born Sept. 1, 1899, in Litchfield to the late Daniel Snider & Rose Ann Bowin. She married Edward E Burns; he died Apr. 8, 1974. She was a member of Ladies Auxiliary in Grafton. Survivors are 1 son Stanley of Grafton; 1 daughter, Roberta Taravella of Wichita, KS; and 2 sisters, Mabel Elliott of Granite City and Ola Yachel of Ponto on Beach. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 1 daughter, 3 brothers and 1 sister. Visitation was July 29 at Jacoby brothers funeral home in Grafton. Funeral was held there with Rev. Pat Carroll officiating. Burial was in Sunset Hills cemetery at Edwardsville.

BURNS, Charles G., born 1951, Jersey County, Illinois, died 19-08-1971, buried St. Francis cemetery. Charles G. Burns, Jr., 20, died of injuries suffered in a truck accident. Mr Burns was a junior at McKendree College in Lebanon, died Aug. 19. The fatal crash took place Aug. 18 on Rt 100, 3 miles from Grafton. The young man was on his way home when the truck which he was driving left the highway and crashed into a tree. He was taken to Alton Memorial hospital where he had undergone surgery. Friends called at Burke funeral home in Grafton where the rosary was recited. Funeral services were held at St. Patrick church, Grafton with Father Patrick Morrow officiating. Burial was in St. Francis cemetry, Jerseyville. Charles had graduated from Jersey Community high and was continuing his education at McKendree. During the sumer months he managed the boat harbor at Pere Marquette Park near Grafton. He was one of 9 children born to Charles G. & Lois (Schrup) Burns. Surviving are his parents 1 brother, Chris at home; 7 sister, Mrs. Marsha Kreuger of Grafton, Marilyn, Marti, Michelle, Mary Sue, Melinda and Melissa, all at home; his paternal grandmother Mrs. Leo R (Marguerite) Burns of Jerseyville and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Marie Schrup of San Antonio, TX.

She was born in Jerseyville on Jan. 16, 1887, the daughter of Horace & Anna (Combs) Mershon. She married Milo E Burwash Dec. 31, 1916. Surviving are her husband; daughter, Mrs. Sarah H Odshire of Peoria; 4 sons, H. M. of Albuquerque, NM, Milo of Paxton, Robert R of Dallas, TX, and Donald E of Danville, 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Services were held at Chrisman funeral home in Rossville with Rev. Alvin Edward Burgwig, 73, formerly of Jerseyville, died Jan. 24 at Bryn Mawr hospital in Bryn Mawr, PA after an extended illness. Born Apr 25, 1910 in Hubbard, OH, son of the late John & Elizabeth (—-ther) Burwig, he came to Illinois in 1933. He married Geraldine Arter, daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Tom Arter of Jerseyville, and was a WWI army veteran. The Burwigs moved to Florida in 1972 after his retirement from W A Rice Seed company, where he had worked for many years. Since last Apr. they have resided at the home of their only daughter, Diane Beardsley. Bruwig was a member of the Jerseyville Masonic Lodge, Jerseyville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and First Presbyterian church where he had served as—–. His survivors are his wife and daughter; 2 grandsons and 1 sister, grace Birkenmayer of Miami, FL. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers.

H. geraldine Burwig, 68, formerly of Jerseyville, died Aug. 23, at Main Line Nursing Center in Paoli, PA. She had resided there with her daughter, Diane Beardsley. Before retiring and moving to Florida Mrs. Burwig was office manager for Jerseyville Water Works for many years. She was born Apr. 1, 1916 in Jerseyville, daughter of Tom & Lucy Arter and was a member of Jerseyville First Presbyterian church for 50 years. She is survived by her daughter, Diane; 2 grandsons, Todd and James. Her husband, Alvin Burwig, died Jan. 24, 1984. Services were held at St. John Presbyterian church in Deven, PA. Her ashes were buried in Oak Grove cemetery.

Carl Francis Busch, 64, died at Jersey Community hospital where he had been a patient the past 3 months. Mr Busch was prominent in Odd Fellows work and a retired bookkeeper. Mr Busch was born in Jerseyville, Oct. 11, 1899, a son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Sigel Busch, and his death occurred 2 daus before his 65th birthday. Survivors are 1 brother, Roy Busch of Warrenton, MO and 1 sister, Mrs. Lloyd (Bertha) Maguire of Jerseyville; nieces and nephews. For a number of years Mr. Busch was a bookkeeper for Moore’s Oil and Fertilizer company in Jerseyville. In his lodge work, the Jerseyville man had served as secretary of the IOOF 79th Illinois district. BUSCH, George Frederick, born 27-05-1888, Woodville, Greene County, Illinois, died 28-03-1959, buried Otterville cemetery. George Frederick Busch, 70 yrs, 10 mos, 1 day, prominent retired farmer and former supervisor in Otter Creek Township, died March 28, at Jersey Community hospital. He had been a patient for the past 3 weeks. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home in Jerseyville. Final rites were held at Methodist Church in Jerseyville March 30. The pastor, Rev. Earl Dickey, officiated and interment was in Otterville cemetery. Mr Busch was a son of the Late Siegel F, & Othilda (Brockmeyer) Busch and was born at Woodville in Greene County May 27, 1888. He came to Jersey county at the age of 5 and spent all his life on the same farm. In addition to his farming interests, Mr. Busch served a 4 year term as supervisor from Otter CreeK Township, and at the time of his death was Justice of the Peace there. He was a member of the Methodist church. Mr Busch married Mabel (Fredenburg) Jan. 7, 1909, and the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Jan. 11 at the Methodist Church, Jerseyville. Surviving are his wife, 2 daughters, Mrs Kearney (Alice) Dabbs and Mrs. Raymond (Irene) Gerson of Fieldon; 2 sons Howard F Busch of Dow and Virgil Busch of Jerseyville; 11 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren, 1 sister, Mrs. Lloyd Maguire of Jerseyville and 2 brothers, Carl Busch of Jerseyville and Roy Busch of Warrenton, MO. 1 daughter, Ruth Rowena, died in infancy.

BUSCH, Virgil L., born 1911, Jersey County, Illinois, died 27-06-1990, buried St. Francis cemetery. Virgil L. Busch, 79, died June 27, 1990, at home. Busch owned and operated the Busch’s Farm Restaurant and Bowl Inn and the former V Busch Dairy, both in Jerseyville. He had entered the state police force as a highway patrolman in East St. Louis and was the official driver for the late Lt Gov Hugh Cross. He had made contributions to Jerseyville community, including the first lighted ball diamond. He was bBorn in Jersey County the son of Mabel Busch of Jerseyville and the late George F Busch. On Oct. 13, 1936, he married Mary (Shortal) Busch. She survives. Also surviving are his mother; 2 daughters, Karen Beertman of Jerseyville and Charlene Schmitz of Lincoln, NE; 1 son, William Busch of Columbia, MO; 2 granddaughters; 3 great grandchildren and 2 sisters, Irene Gerson of Fieldon and Alice Dabbs of Jerseyville. Funeral mass was held at St. Francis church with Revs Henry Schmidt and William Hembrow as concelebrants. Visitation and rosary were held at the church with a prayer service following. Burial was private at St. Francis cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. Francis School. Jacoby-Schroeder funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

BUSHNELL, Daniel A., born 21-08-1863, Eldred, Greene County, Illinois, died 1941, buried Eldred cemetery. Daniel A Bushnell, 78, died at his home near Eldred, following several weeks illness. The funeral under direction of Mehl & Son was held at the Baptist Church in Eldred, Rev. Frazier conducting. Burial was in Eldred cemetery. D A Bushnell was a son of Hiram & Julia Bushnell. and was born in the Eldred vicinity Aug. 21, 1863. The greater part of his life has been spent as a farmer in Eldred. In 1889 he married Pachia (Garrett) she survives. Also surviving are 1 daughter, Mrs Melvin Martin; 2 grandchildren and 1 brother, Orville Bushnell.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Mildred Maguire of Godfrey and Lorene Schrieder of Jerseyville; 1 son, Wiley Eugene Busker, Jr., of Godfrey; 6 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren and 1 brother, Lloyd Busker of Jerseyville. He was preceded in death by 1 son, 1 granddaughter, 2 grandsons, 2 sisters and 3 brothers.
BUSTER, Joseph Paul, born 11-03-1965, died 21-01-1969, buried Murrayville cemetery. Joseph Paul Buster, Jr., 3 died Jan. 21, 1969 at Children’s Hospital in St. Louis following open heart surgery. The little boy was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Buster of Franklin and the grandson of Mr. & Mrs Herschell Dabbs of Jerseyville. He had had heart surgery 8 days after his birth, March 11, 1965, and was an out patient at regular intervals. BUTLER, Irene S. (Rue), Ashburn, Missouri, died 20-09-1990, buried Cemetery Upper Alton cemetery. Irene S Butler, 74, died Sept. 20, 1990, at home after a lengthy illness. She was an inspector in the Decorating Department at Owens Illinois Inc. of Alton for 28 yrs, retiring in 1975. Born in Ashburn, MO, she was the daughter of the late William & Pearl (Stauford) Rue. She married Ralph W Butler, June 17, 1936, in Troy, MO. Surviving are her husband; 3 daughters, Dixie Crane of Brighton, and Carol Stilt and Wanda “Kay” Coleman, Both of Dow; 1 son, Ralph Butler of Delhi; 7 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and 3 brother, Dave and Albert Rue, both of Des Moines, IA and Walter Wilson of House Springs, MO. Preceding her in death were 3 grandchildren; 1 sister, Esther Rue; and 3 brothers, Mike, Robert and William Rue. Visitation and services were from Staten funeral home in Alton. Rev William Elder officiated. Burial was in Upper Alton cemetery. Memorials may be given to Alzheimers Disease and Related Disorders Association

Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery. She was born Aug. 8, 1892 in Grafton, a daughter of Isaac Newton & Lillie M. (Hills) Wallace. Survivors include her sister-in-law, Mrs. Fred Wallace of Jerseyville, nieces and nephews. Her husband was the late Peter Butler.

His survivors are 2 sons, George Butler of Wood River and Andrew Butler of Alton; 1 daughter, Mrs. Bertha Pavlekis of St. Louis, and 1 sister, Mrs. Ella Findley of Alton.
BUTLER, Thomas William, born New Haven, Connecticut, died -08-1926, buried St. Francis cemetery. Thomas William Butler, Sr., died recently. Funeral Rev. Father J. J. Clancy with burial in St. Francis cemetery. Mr Butler was born in New Haven, CT and came west with his parents when he was 2 years old. He had been a Jerseyville merchant for 30 years and had put 2 sons in charge of a store in Alton and retired. He married Catherine (Hagerty) Butler 38 years ago. 2 sons, T W Butler Jr. and John E Butler both of Alton; 1 daughter, Mrs. Anna Butler Mode died 5 years ago. Excellent character, honest in dealings.

Her husband, 1 brother, and 1 sister preceded her in death.
BYBEE, Leander Hayes, born11-04-1887, Missouri, died 19-07-1951, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Leander Hayes Bybee, 64 yrs, 3 mo, 8 days, for many years a night clerk at the Mark Twain hotel in St. Louis, was found dead July 19, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Hildred near Jerseyville where he had resided for the past year. An inquisition was conducted by coroner Rodney Jacoby and was determined that death resulted from natural causes. The deceased was a son of the late Charles & Laura (Coil) Bybee and was born in MO, Apr. 11, 1887. Mr Bybee is survived by 3 daughters, Mrs. Hildred of Jerseyville, Mrs. Ross Dolce and Mrs. James C Arter of Chicago; 1 son, Charles Bybee of Springfield, MO; 16 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Ben Bybee of Lincoln, NE, and 1 sister, of Lincoln, NE. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev O. H. Hamilton officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.
BYRNES, Tessie, born 1876, died 1906. Tessie Byrnes, 30, wife of William Byrnes, of Grafton died at her home in that city. She had been ill for some time. Sunday she prepared the noon meal and while seated at the table with her husband and 3 yr old daughter, she reached for a piece of chicken, and fell dead on the table. Funeral held from Catholic church in Grafton. Rev C A Snyder officiated.
