Michel. 88 years. Born June 15, 1875, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Pivoda. Leaves sister, Anna Pivoda of Grafton and brother, John Pivoda of Jerseyville. Pallbearers: Fayette, Marion Pivoda, Leonard Willman, George Beaverdell and Robert Michel and Billy Willman.
MIDDENDORF. Died 10-05-1908. Source of obit not noted: Francis Middendorf died at his home 10miles northwest of city Sunday, May 10, 1908. 76 years. Funeral on Tuesday morning.
MIDDLETON. Died 00-03-1927. From Jersey County News, March 17, 1927: Mrs. Caroline Middleton died at her home of East Carpenter St. In 55th year. Born near Delhi on January 3, 1873. Her husband, late John Middleton, preceded her about ten years ago. Leaves three sons; Jospeh of White, Nebraska; William of Douglas, Illinois; Walter Middleton of Wood River and six daughters; Mrs. G. W. Kelley of Kansas City, Missouri; Mrs. Robert Boner of McCook, Nebraska; Mrs. C. E. Spriggs, Misses Dorothy, Vera and Erma Middleton of Jerseyville. Funeral from Methodist church, Rev. O. B. Kinsey. Buried in Oak Grove.
MIDDLETON. From Jerseyville Republican, February 1, 1916: John Alexander Middleton born in Bellview, Iron County, Missouri, August 8, 1862, died January 27, 1917. 54 years. Belonged to Baptist church at Bellview. Later he changed to Methodist church. Father of 12 children: nine survive; Mrs. Viola Sarr, of St. Louis, Missouri, Mrs. Hattie Boner, Nashville and William, Elsie, Joseph, Walter, Dorothy, Vera and Irma Middleton of Jerseyville. Leaves six brothers; Thomas of Granneville, Missouri, Samuel, Desota, Missouri; William of St. Louis; Andrew, James and Davis Middleton of Belleview, Missouri. Funeral at Methodist church. Rev. F. O. Wilson.
MIDGLEY. Died 00-11-1897. Source of obit not noted: Mrs. Samuel Midgley, 73 years, died at home at Newbern. Funeral at Melville. Leaves husband and four children.
MIELKE. Alice V. Mielke, 61, of Alton, formerly of Hardin, died at 7:50 am Wednesday, March 2, 1988 at St. Anthony’s hospital in Alton, following a lengthy illness. Born in Jefferson County, Missouri she was the daughter of the late William and Evelyn (McIntyre) Taylor. She married Francis Marion Mielke February 20, 1957. He died December 26, 1978. Surviving are a daughter, Eleanor Roth of East Alton; a son, Herschel Taylor of Jerseyville; four grandchildren; three brothers, James Taylor of Jerseyville, Glen Taylor of South Roxana, and Larry Taylor of Alton; and four sisters, Pat Connour of Brighton, Myrtle Murphy of Bay City, Texas, Lelah Beer of Portland, Oregon, and Linda Holmes of Murphysville. She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister. Visitation will be 5-9 pm today at Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin, where services will be conducted 11 am Friday by the Rev. George Johnson. Burial will be in Hardin cemetery.
MIELKE. Died 22-04-1968. Mrs. Jessie May Mielke, wife of Harvey A. Mielke, Sr., of Grafton, died Monday morning, April 22, at 2:54 o’clock at St. Joseph hospital in Alton where he had been a patient for a month. Requiem mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Anthony Schmidt at 9:30 o’clock Wednesday morning at St. Patrick’s church in Grafton and interment was in the Hartford cemetery. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Mrs. Mielke, a resident of Grafton for thirty-six years, was a daughter of the late Stephen and Anna Besaw Desherlia, and was born at Deerplain in Calhoun County on October 23, 1899. Her age at death was 68 years, 5 months and 29 days. Surviving her in addition to her husband are one Son, Harvey A. Mielke, Jr. of Fresno, California; one sister, Mrs. Bertha Poore of Grafton, and four brothers; Sheriff Adam Desherlia and Elmer Desherlia of Jerseyville, Charles Desherlia of Grafton and Stephen Desherlia of Peoria.
MILEM. Source of obit not noted: Charles Henry Milem, son of allen and Mary Milem, was born February 26th, 1871 and died April 2, 1911, aged 40 years, 1 month and 7 days. He was born in English township, Jersey County, his life was mostly spent on a farm; he was married to Mary Lagrand in the fall of 1897, and lived on a farm in Richwoods township until the death of his wife, March 19, 1906; he then went to California where he spent 2 years with his brother, Albert, who was in poor health; he administered to him with brotherly care and affection; they then went to New Mexico where they only stayed a short time and then returned to Colorado. Seeing his brothers’s health was not improving, the returned to East Newbern, Illinois, where they stayed at the home of their aunt, Annie Hamer, until the death of his brother; then he returned to the home of his sister, Laura Hamel, of Jerseyville. In the spring of 1909 he went to South Dakota where he was engaged in farming until the time of his death. He was united with the Baptist church in Jerseyville in the spring of 1909; he had publicly professed his love for his savior. Mr. Milem was a true, upright and exemplary man, he had a personality that drew around him worthy and upright associates; he possessed charity for those in trouble and the years of his life were filled with generous deeds; to know him was to respect and appreciate his manly virtue. His sister, Carrie, was with him during his short illness and administered to him with sisterly care and affection. He leaves to mourn their loss a father and two sisters, and many relatives and friends.
MILEM. Died 20-01-1904. Source of obit not noted: William F. Milem was born on a farm in English township October 26, 1872. When quite young, he moved with his parents to a farm in Richwoods township; here he spent his early boyhood days. He had a good country school education, and was regarded with highest esteem by his teachers and fellow students. He always took an active part in all the school entertainments, and at one given at the Lone Star school, he carried off the highest honors. The subject of this sketch was a good, moral and religious young man of no bad habits. When he was about seventeen years old he became afflicted with catarrh for which he consulted various physicians, but received no benefit. About this time, his mother died. The excitement and grief aggravated his disease, and in a short time he became afflicted with melancholia, which rapidly developed into insanity. He was then taken to Jacksonville, Illinois for treatment. In a short time he seemed so greatly improved that he was brought home, but remained there only a short time when he grew worse and was taken back to Jacksonville. Later he was transferred to South Bartonville, Illinois, where he died January 20, 1904. The body was brought to Jerseyville, and the funeral was conducted by Dr. J. A. Ford from the Baptist church at 11 am Saturday, burial took place in the Grimes cemetery. Deceased is survived by a father, two brothers, two sisters and many friends who will ever reverence his memory.
MILES (ROGERS ?). Died 29-04-1981. First part of obit missing: – of 923 S. State, Jerseyville were conducted Friday morning at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with burial in Jefferson Barracks National cemetery. His death occurred at 7 am April 29 at John Cochran VA hospital, St. Louis. The farmer and World War II veteran was born October 8, 1907 in Jersey County. His survivors are a sister and brother, Rachel B. Woods of Dupo and Lloyd Rogers of East Alton and two half brothers, Raymond and Ernest Miles, both of Fieldon. The heart fund has been designated as a memorial.
MILES. Died 28-05-1926. From Jerseyville Republican June 3, 1926: Judge Charles Miles, son of late Dr. G. S. Miles, who was a dentist here for a number of years, died at home in Peoria on May 28. Attended local schools and law school at Ann Arbor, Michigan. Had often visited at home of aunt, Mrs. Mary Pogue. Leaves wife, one son, Warren, sister, Mrs. Ralph Sample of Webster Groves, Missouri; two brothers, Harold Miles of Beatrice, Nebraska and Herbert W. Miles of Lincoln, Nebraska. Funeral in Peoria.
MILES. Died 00-10-1915. From Jerseyville Republican, October 1915: J. E. Cory has received a wire informing him of the death of his sister, Mrs. Flora Cory Miles of Hastings, Nebraska. The lady and her husband, Clarence J. Miles, were formerly residents of Jerseyville.
MILES. Died 00-02-1893. Source of obit not noted: George S. Miles, Dr. born Westminister, Massachusetts, October 13, 1832. Married Mattie Warren August 2, 1859.
MILES. Died 07-03-1889. Republican Examiner, March 22, 1889: William H. Miles, son of Thomas and Ruth F. Miles was born near Upper Alton, Illinois, May 5, 1838. His parents moved to Macoupin County when he was four years of age, and in this county he was reared and lived most of his life. He was married to Miss Lydia A. Williamson at Irving, Illinois August 7, 1864 after which he settled in Gillespie and engaged in the mercantile business for a short time, coming there from Piasa, where he lived till the year 1875 when he moved his family to Kemper, Jersey County and resided there till four years ago when he removed to Beatrice, Nebraska, at which place he died March 7, 1889, aged 51 years. He left a devoted wife, and ten children, two of whom are married, to mourn for a tender loving husband and father. He left also an aged mother, six sisters, and one brother to mourn for one they loved, besides a large circle of other relatives and friends. He was well known in Macoupin and Jersey counties and universally loved and greeted every one he met with a smile and cheerful word. His sudden death caused a great vacancy in his home as well as in many hearts. But the great healer alone can bind up the broken hearts. He died trusting in Jesus, may the ties which have been severed on earth be reunited in heaven. The funeral services were conducted by the ME pastor at Beatrice, Nebraska, and he was laid to rest in Beatrice cemetery.
MILFORD. Died 00-08-1918. Jersey County Democrat, August 15, 1918: Bartholomew Chappel Milford, eldest son of Wm. And Elizabeth Chappel Milford, born in Heffield, England, November 5, 1838. 79 years. When 2 years old come to American with parents and settled south part of Jersey County. Farmed until retirement. Moved to Jerseyville. December 12, 1859. Married Julia Frances Briggs. 13 children born, eight living: John B. of Blanco, California; Ida M. Falkner, Jerseyville, Illinois; Rev. George E., Herrick, Illinois; Leslie F. of McClusky, Illinois; Marion H., Cherokee, Iowa; Charles M. of St. Louis; Emma L. Hardy, St. Louis, Missouri. He was charter member of CP church of Newbern, Illinois. In 1866 he was ordained a deacon by Rev. R. D. Miller and served churches both at Otterville and Newbern. Enlisted in 61st Regiment, Co. A Volunteers of Illinois, fought at Pittsburgh Landing. Honorable discharge. Returned to family. Leaves wife, eight children, twenty-five grandchildren, four great grandchildren; three brothers and one sister. Member of IOOF of Elsah, Illinois, also AF & AM of Jerseyville.
MILHIME. Clara Mildred Milhime, 80, of Bethalto, died at 6:13 pm Saturday, August 1, 1987, at St. Anthony’s hospital in Alton, after a lengthy illness. She was born in Jerseyville, daughter of the late henry and Nellie (Rodgers) Groppel. On July 5, 1923, in Alton she married Howard M. Milhime and he died February 9, 1956. Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy Dale of Bethalto, two sons, Fredrick and Ivan Milhime both of Bethalto; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and three sisters, Mary Besterfeldt of Bethalto, Alice Longnecker of Waco, Texas, and Emma Walker of East Alton. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm today at Smith Funeral Home in Alton, where services will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday With the Rev. Doyle Hatfield officiating. Burial will be in Upper Alton cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association or a charity of one’s choice.
MILLER. Died 00-03-1970. The death of Loya Miller, 48, of Frankfort, Missouri, in a crawler tractor accident Friday morning on the farm of Becker brothers in English township was the second tragic event to occur in the Miller family within a few days time. Miller’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Miller of Fieldon are the great grandparents of Shannon Lee and Darrell Edward, 3 and 1 year old sons of Mr. and Mrs. George Johnson of Jerseyville, who lost their lives in the destruction by fire of the family home on February 23. Miller, father of twelve, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Jersey Community hospital at ten fifty-five o’clock am. The Missouri man, formerly of Jersey County, had been operating a crawler tractor pushing a tree out of a ditch. According to reports, a limb of the tree struck Miller inflicting fatal injuries. An inquest will be held later by coroner Rodney Jacoby. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Chapel where services were conducted at one-thirty o’clock Monday afternoon by Rev. Dorcie Hill. Burial was in the Fieldon cemetery. Mr. Miller was born in Missouri, may 31, 1921, and was a carpenter by trade. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Madge B. Ridenour Miller; six sons, Marvin, Edward, Mark, and Paul Miller of Frankfort, Charles Miller of Louisiana, Missouri and Elmer Miller of Darby, Montana; six daughters; Mrs. Darrell Krauss of O’fallon, Missouri. – rest of obit missing (continued on page 3a in paper).
MILLER. Died 18-02-1918. Amos L. Miller, 63 years, died at his home on Curtis St., Jerseyville. Private funeral held from home. Rev. Joseph Jenkins. Oak Grove cemetery. Born September 28, 1855, eight miles south of Jersey. Died February 18. On February 14, 1866 married Rose Ella White in old Kane. Six children: Mary E. Sylvester, Mrs. Chas Anderson, Ray E. William and Sarah A., Roy E. died nearly two years ago. These five children, the wife, three Brothers, W. P. of this City, Adolph of Coal City, Alva P. of Gem, Alberta, Canada; one sister, Mrs. N. E. Van Bluskirk of Kincaid, Kansas and one grandchild, Ray Elsworth. Funeral from home. Rev. Joseph Jenkins, Baptist church. Pallbearers: Jas. C. Downey, Robert L. Downey, Finis A. Downey, W. A. Atterberry, C. E. Atteberry and J. W. Atterbery. Burial Oak Grove cemetery.

MILLER. Died 06-02-1950. August E. Miller, a retired blacksmith, died at his home in Jerseyville Monday evening, February 6 at ten-fifteen o’clock. The decedent was a son of the late John henry and Sarah Ellen Allen Miller and was born at Dix, Illinois on February 3, 1882, and marked his sixty-eighth birthday three days before his death. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mae Reeves Miller, two sons, Harry and Louis Miller of Jerseyville, one daughter, Mrs. Logan Hunstman of Bethalto; one sister, Mrs. Frank Petifer of Albany, New York; three half sisters, Mrs. Glenn Woods of St. Louis, Mrs. Floyd Godar of Brussels and Mrs. Howard Lewis of Indiana; one step-sister, Mrs. Laura Maffa of St. Louis, and one half-brother, Frank Miller of St. Louis. He also leaves eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Gubser Funeral Home Thursday afternoon, February 9, at two o’clock. Rev. Melvin D. McClain officiated and interment was in Grimes cemetery.

MILLER. Died 30-05-1988. A graveside service was held at Oak Grove cemetery for the Rev. Charles Casper Miller, 96, of Wichita, Kansas, who died may 30, 1988 in Wichita. He was born May 29, 1892, in Jerseyville to Jerome and Elizabeth (Cyter) Miller. He resided in Wichita for many years and was pastor of the Grace and Glory Pentecostal Church in Wichita. The funeral was June 4 in Wichita. Survivors include four nieces, five great and 11 great-great nieces and nephews.
MILLER. Died 00-00-1915. Source of obit not noted, dated 1915: Christine Rosine Miller was born Wuertemberg, Germany, on January 1847, and emigrated to this country 45 years ago, settling in Jersey County, Illinois. In 1870 she married John Miller and the same year they made their home on a farm near Delhi. Their union was blessed with two daughters and one son. On August 1889, her husband was taken from her side by death. She was for many years a faithful member of the German Evangelical church of Jerseyville and known and esteemed there as a regular attendant of god’s house on the Sabbath day, where he often received comfort and strength to stand firm on the rock of her Christian faith. She leaves besides her three children, 15 grandchildren, 2 brothers and other relatives. During the last six months she suffered more or less from kidney trouble and dropsy, from which she died last Thursday at the age of 68 years, 3 months and days. Her funeral took place Saturday afternoon from the J. B. church in Delhi, conducted by the Rev. , pastor of the local German Evangelical church.
MILLER. Died 00-09-1898. Source of obit not noted: September 15, 1898: Christopher J. Miller died at home of daughter, Mrs. S. G. Downey four miles northwest of Jerseyville. 74 years old. Born and reared in Jersey County. About 18 years ago went to Fort Scott, Kansas Where he farmed, after which he returned to Jersey County and has since made home with daughter Funeral from Lebanon church. Burial in Lax cemetery.
MILLER. Died 09-10-1981. David George Miller, 23, died October 9 in the St. Louis University hospital from injuries sustained in an auto accident on the Alton River Road on July 12, this year. He was a nephew of Peggy Lawder Kaufhold of Jerseyville and grandson of the late Dr. Homer L. and Helen Lawder of Jerseyville. He was a graduate of Central High School in Champaign and employed by the University of Illinois. His survivors are his parents, Joseph A. and Patricia Lawder Miller, and sister, Lee, a senior at the University of Illinois, and his aunt Mrs. Kaufhold. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 pm October 12 at the McKinley Foundation in Champaign. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm at the McKinley Foundation church in Champaign Tuesday. A memorial service and burial will be in Leland on Wednesday.
MILLER. Died 25-05-1971. Final services will be held this afternoon (Thursday) at 1:30 o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home for Donald Miller, 72, of this city whose death occurred May 25 at St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton. Rev. William Smith will officiate at the rites and interment will be in Valhalla Memorial Park. A laborer, he was born March 28, 1899 in Fieldon, a son of Edward and Nora Reddish Miller. Mr. Miler was a member of Jerseyville Moose Lodge and Local No. 646 Laborer International Union. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Florence Geisler Miller; two sons, Vernis D. Miller of Bethalto and Verle L. Miller of Cottage Hills; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Robert Cooper of Jerseyville.
MILLER. Died 10-08-1952. Earl Miller of Alton, native of Rosedale, and father of Mrs. Harry Goheen of Dow, died Sunday morning, August10, at the Memorial hospital where he was taken for medical treatment after he was accidentally shot through the head at eight-thirty o’clock by William Irwin, his son-in-law, while on a hunting trip about a quarter of a mile north of the men’s homes. Irvin had made his home with Miller for a number of years, and now he and his wife reside in a house adjoining Miller’s at the same address on Anna Avenue. Irvin told officers and Coroner Ben F. Slaten that he and his father-in-law had been hunting Sunday morning in the wooded area near a gully formed by a creek. He told the officers that they were out of sight of each other and he had sat down to watch for squirrels. He related that upon hearing a noise in the gully and seeing something move which he thought was a ground hog he fired. He went to investigate and found Miller critically wounded. The younger man went for assistance and an ambulance was summoned to move Miller to the hospital where his death occurred about two and one-half hours after he was hurt. Mr. Miller was born in Rosedale and at the time of his death he was fifty-four years old. For the past twenty-five years he has resided in Alton and was a dealer in used car parts and used cars. Surviving Mr. Miller are his wife, Irene; a daughter, Mrs. Harry Goheen of Dow; a brother, Lee of Rosedale; three Step-daughters, Loretta, Violet and Patsy Slone of his home address; and one step-son David Slone, of the family home address. Funeral services will be held at the Slaten Funeral Home Thursday afternoon August 14, at two o’clock and interment will be in Valhalla cemetery. Relatives were unable to reach Lee Miller who is vacationing in Wyoming to inform him of the death of his brother.
MILLER. Former Jersey County resident Earl Douglas Miller, 44, died at 11:20 p.m. Saturday, December 8, in Oakland, California. He was a minister of the Word of God Mission in Oakland. Born in Alton, he was the son of Harvey and Edna (Harris) Miller of Jerseyville. On March 17,1973, in Palo Alto, California, he married the former Servilla Macon, and she survives. In addition to his wife and parents, surviving are two sisters, Linda Miller of Jerseyville and Ruth Ann Miller of Alton; and a brother, Michael Miller of Jerseyville. Visitation is from 4 to 8 pm Friday at Targhetta Funeral Home in Brighton, with services at 11 am Saturday. The Rev. Roy Robinson will officiate. Burial is in Shipman cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Food Pantry of Jerseyville, Alton or Brighton.
MILLER. Died 00-01-1919. Jerseyville Republican, January 30, 1919. Mrs. Elizabeth Mary Miller, aged 25 years, died at her home three and half miles north of Jerseyville. Private funeral held from home. Burial in Kane cemetery. Rev. E. B. Timmons and Rev. R. T. Gasaway.
MILLER. Died 06-01-1980. Florence Miller, 91, a resident at Greenwood Manor, died at 3:10 am January 6 at Jersey Community Hospital. She was born in Lincoln, Nebraska Apr. 15, 1888, the daughter of Arthur H. and Carrie C. Campion Simonds. She married the late Olin P. Miller. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Frost of Jennings, Missouri, Celiss Storz, Mark Island, Florida and Mrs. Helen Deffenbaugh of Mesa, Arizona; four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Irene Richards of Roanake, Indiana. She was preceded in death by three sisters. Visitation is Monday, January 7 from 2-5 and 6-9 pm at Gubser Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 10 am January 8 at the Funeral Home. Rev. R. E. George officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery.
MILLER. Died 18-05-1984. Floyd Paul Miller, 57, of Route 3, died at 10:30 pm Friday at Jersey Community hospital, following a lengthy illness. Born in Jerseyville, a son of the late Floyd Randolph and Marguerite (Keller) Miller, he married the former Phyliss J. Birkenmayer and she survives. In addition to his wife, surviving are a daughter, Mary M. Miller of Jerseyville; two sons, Jeffry Scott Miller and Kent Michael Miller, both of Jerseyville; four grandchildren; and a sister, Rita Pape of Ballwin, Missouri. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Sunday at Gubser Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. a funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 am Monday at Holy Ghost Catholic church with the Rev. Miller, owner of Miller Insurance Company, served as a Republican Sheriff from 1962-1966. He was born in Jerseyville March 20, 1927 the son of Floyd Randolph and Marguerite Keller Miller. He was a member of Jerseyville Elks Lodge, Moose and American Legion Post 492. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Birkenmayer Miller; a daughter, Mary M. Miller; two sons, Jeffrey Scott and Kent Michael Miller, all of Jerseyville; four grandchildren and one sister, Rita Pape of Baldwin, Missouri. He was preceded in death by a half brother, Frederick, and his parents. The rosary was recited at 7:30pm Sunday at Gubser Funeral Home by father William Hembrow. A funeral mass was concelebrated by Father Hembrow and Jim Wheeler of Quincy College at 10 am Monday, May 21 at Holy Ghost church with burial in Oak Grove cemetery. MILLER. Died 02-11-1956. Floyd R. Miller, retired businessman of Jerseyville, died at one-fifteen o’clock Friday morning November 2, at the Jersey Community Hospital where he had been a medical patient for the past month. Funeral services were held at three-thirty o’clock Sunday afternoon, November 4, at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home with Rev. M. Edwards Breed officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr. Miller was born in Rockbridge, Illinois July 20, 1881 a son of the late Dr. Adam E. and Geneva Ludwig Miller. He marked his seventy-fifth birthday anniversary last July. The decedent was graduated from the Jerseyville high school with the class of 1901, and attended Northwestern Medical School in Chicago. His marriage to Charlotte E. Jacobs of Jerseyville took place in 1906. She, together with the couple’s two children, Elizabeth and Frederick, preceded him in death. The latter, a major in the United States Army, was taken prisoner on Corregidor, and lost his life in 1944 when a prison ship moving prisoners from Philippines to China was sunk. Mr. Miller’s marriage to Miss Marguerite Keller of Jerseyville took place in 1926. Surviving the decedent in addition to Mrs. Miller are a son and daughter, Floyd Paul Miller of Jerseyville and Mrs. Rita Miller Pape of St. Louis; one grandson, Jeffrey Scott Miller; one brother, Oliver J. Miller of Palmyra, and one sister, Mrs. Zada Hutchinson of Highland Park, Illinois. As a young man, Mr. Miller engaged in the general mercantile business with his father and brother in Rockbridge. The years from 1911 to 1916 were spent in farming at Greenfield and in the latter year he became affiliated with and operated the Jacobs Lumber Company in Jerseyville. He continued in that business until 1923. In 1924, Mr. Miller erected a modern brick building on North State Street and opened a hardware store which now bears the firm name of F. R. Miller and Son, and has, since Miller’s retirement in 1947, been operated by his son, Paul Miller. Mr. Miller continued his farming and livestock interests after retiring from the hardware store. In former years, Mr. Miller was an active member of the First Presbyterian church of Jerseyville and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Miller, 70, of St. Petersburg, Florida, a former science teacher at Jersey Community High school, were held Wednesday at the Presbyterian church in St. Petersburg. He was cremated. She was a member of the Democrat Women’s Club, the Auxiliary of the Moose, and the Royal Neighbors of America Lodge. Funeral of Mrs. Henrietta Shlansker Miller, who died at home of her niece, Mrs. Stephen Pivoda, in Wood River, held Sunday in the Hartford church near Grafton. Rev. C. J. Struebing serving. 76 years. Born near Grafton December 12, 1851, and spent entire life in Jersey County. On January 21, 1890, married Charles Miller. Resided many years on a farm nine miles west of Grafton, but moved to Grafton 12 years ago. Husband died six years ago. She left no children of her own, but mothered a family of five children, Mrs. Alice Williams, who died September 23, 1923; Mrs. John Watson and Mrs. Bert Dabbs of Grafton, Mrs. Claude Baxter of Alton. She also assisted in rearing of two boys to manhood, Henry Guess who spent his entire life at the Miller home, dying the past year, and Rector Gilmore, now in North Dakota. Besides the relatives mentioned she also leaves one Brother, J. B. Schlansker of Grafton and several nieces and nephews.

William H. Smith officiated at the rites. Interment was in Fieldon cemetery. Born June 17, 1886 in Jersey County she was the daughter of John and Jokobina Ferenbach Traunecker. Her husband was the late David Miller. Her survivors are three sisters, Miss Elizabeth Traunecker of Jerseyville; Mill Augusta Traunecker and Mrs. Emma C. Gerson of Alton and a nephew. Her husband, two infant daughters, parents, three brothers and one sister preceded her in death. Visitation was held at Jacoby Funeral Home.

Mrs. Miller was daughter of Benjamin and Anna Eliza Reddish Dunham, her father being a native of West Moreland County, Virginia and her mother a native of Illinois. MILLER. Died 00-01-1892. From Jerseyville Republican, January 1892: Lorenzo D. Miller, born Grafton September 16, 1843. Went to California to seek fortune but war breaking out shortly after his leaving Illinois, he joined the Army where he contracted rheumatism which caused curvature of the spinal column, thereby making him a cripple for the remainder of his life. Came home and married Mildred L. Barlow. A Dr. Smith operated on him to remove cancer, but Dr. Smith was routed by local doctors. Died from cancer.
MILLER. Died 04-04-1959. Mrs. Margaret Magdelena Miller, wife of Robert F. Miller, an employee of the Jerseyville post office, died at ten o’clock Saturday Night April 4, at Barnes hospital in St. Louis where she had been a patient for four days. Prior to that time she had been a patient at the Jersey Community Hospital and St. Joseph hospital in Alton. Mrs. Miller, a daughter of ex-mayor Clemens Groppel and the late Freda Kessler Groppel was born in Jerseyville, September 13, 1913, and her age at the time of death was forty-five years, six months and twenty-one days. In addition to her husband and father, Mrs. Miller is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Roberta Kanallakan of Jerseyville, one son, Fred Miller of Jerseyville; one brother, Clemens G. Groppel, Jr. of this city and one sister, Mrs. Otis Cooper of Fieldon. The decedent was a member of Peace Evangelical and Reformed church in Jerseyville and the Ruby Rebekah Lodge of this city. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home, Tuesday afternoon, April 7 at two o’clock. The Rev. Alton Loar officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.
MILLER. Died 31-10-1975. Funeral mass for Mrs. Marguerite K. Miller, 85, of Rural Route 4, Jerseyville was celebrated Monday morning at the Holy Ghost church with Father Joseph Havey celebrant. Interment was in the Oak Grove cemetery. Her death occurred at 12:40 pm on October 31 at the Greenwood Manor Nursing Home where she had resided since February, 1974. She was born on October 7, 1890 in Jersey County, a daughter of Comos and Maryjane Knapp Keller. Her husband, Floyd R. Miller, died in 1956. She is survived by one son, Paul Miller of Jerseyville, and a daughter, Mrs. Ray (Rita) M. Pape of Ballwin, Missouri; seven grandchildren.
MILLER. Died 18-09-1940. Mrs. Martha Jane Miller, widow of Isaac N. Miller, died at her home in Fieldon Wednesday, September 18, at five-thirty o’clock p.m. following an extended illness. The deceased was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Trammel, and was born in Jersey County January 6, 1858. At the time of her death she was aged eighty-two years, eight months and twelve days. Mrs. Miller is survived by two sons, Lee Miller of Fieldon and Earl Miller of Alton. Funeral services will be held from the Rosedale Methodist church, Friday, September 20 at two o’clock. Rev. Dale Harmon will officiate and interment will be in the Meadow Branch cemetery.

A machinist in ammunition production, he was born may 14, 1898 in Missouri, a son of William and Emma Bunch Miller. His survivors are his wife, the former Ruea Evans; four Sons, Earsie L. Miller of Fieldon, Dallas D., Carl D., and Ira W. Miller, all of Jerseyville; three daughters; Mrs. Floyd (Marie) McIntire, Grafton, Mrs. Leroy (Irene) Wells, Bloomington and Mrs. Steve (Margaret) Evancho, Jerseyville, 59 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren. One brother, Clark Miller, Jerseyville and a sister, Lula Short of St. Louis. Two sons, Leo and Loya, preceded him in death. The family designates the heart fund as . . . rest if obit missing.

Source of obit not noted: Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Noah and Sarah Thompson Chaddock, was born in Meadville, Pennsylvania, January 31 1831, died at her home in this city April 26, 1911, aged 80 years, 3 months and 5 days. She removed with her parents to Kentucky in early childhood. She was married to Dr. Benj. F. Miller in Madisonville, Kentucky in 1850. To this union six children were born, Lucy E. Miller and Daniel C. Miller, the eldest two still survive and reside in Jerseyville. Dr. Miller died before the War of the Rebellion. During the war she was married to Aaron C. Gamble in Carrollton, Illinois. Mr. Gamble served three years in the war, being discharged in the Spring of 1865. To them were born three children, Laura A., who died in early childhood, Silas C. who died about two years ago, and Olive G. Gamble of this city. After Mr. Gamble’s death January 25, 1883, Mrs. Gamble came to Jerseyville where she has since resided. She leaves to mourn her loss, three children, eleven grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends. She was a kind mother and good neighbor and will be greatly missed by family and friends. Interment in Oak Grove cemetery. Rev. Stephen Catt, officiating.

Additional obit: Mary Frances Smith was born may 17, 1841 at Ashaphan, Dodge County, Wisconsin, and removed with her parents to Jersey County, Illinois in 1856. She was married to W. J. Miller January 22, 1858. Eleven children were born to them: seven of whom survive her; four sons, Vis: Fred Miller, of Browning, Illinois, John and Paul Miller, of Los Angeles, California, and Vane Miller, of Elsah, Illinois and three daughters, viz: Mrs. Henrietta Rising, Los Angeles, California, Mrs. Bertha Crohn, Pontiac, Michigan, and Mrs. H. Raymond, Detriot, Michigan. Mrs. Miller united with the Christian church and was baptized at Grafton, Illinois about 1863, and later joined the Cumberland Presbyterian church at Elsah, Illinois, February 1894. She was also one of the active workers of the WCTU at Elsah and was its treasurer at the time of her decease, which occurred November 10, 1906 after nearly two weeks of severe suffering. She leaves to mourn her departure, her husband, four sons, three daughters, one sister and six brothers, besides a host of friends. The funeral services were conducted at the residence by Rev. S. Albrecht, of Elsah. Tuesday, November 13th, after which the remains were carried . . . rest of obit is missing.

MILLER. Died 28-01-1986. Nora E. Miller, 96, died at 1:25 am Tuesday January 28, 1986 at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville, where he had been a resident. She was born in Jersey County, daughter of the late William F. and Emma (Seehausen) Isringhausen. On June 11, 1912, in Jerseyville, she married Fred W. Miller, and he died April 30, 1938. She was an over 60 year member of the Royal Neighbors of America. Surviving are a daughter, Gertrude Coombes of Jerseyville; a son, Robert F. Miller of Jerseyville, three grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a half sister, Nola Clendenny of O’fallon. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm today at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be conducted at 1:30 pm Thursday With the Rev. Frederick Francis officiating. Burial will be in the Fieldon cemetery.
MILLER. Died 24-12-1953. Olin Patrick Miller 63, died suddenly Thursday afternoon, December 24 at four-twenty o’clock at his home on East Exchange St. Mr. Miller had worked as usual Thursday at his job as shipping clerk at the International Shoe Company. After work he had taken his car to a garage for a check and had returned to his home and was sitting in a chair when he became ill and died before the arrival of a physician. His death is believed to have resulted from a heart attack. The decedent was a son of the late Patrick and Alice Waltrip Miller and was born in Green County August 19, 1890. His age at the time of death was sixty three years, four months and five days. Mr. Miller had been a resident of Jerseyville since a young man. He was a well-known musician and organized the Miller Orchestra which for many years played at local functions. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Florence Miller, three daughters, Mrs. Eric Storz, Mrs. Russell Frost and Miss Helen Miller of St. Louis, one brother, Frank Miller of Jerseyville and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, December 27, at two o’clock at the Gubser Funeral Home. Rev. F. W. Schwarzlose, pastor of the Methodist church, officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.
MILLER. Paul A. Miller son of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Miller was born in Grafton, August 22, 1905 and passed away at Madison County Sanitarium Friday, January 8, 1932 at 4:30 am. Paul after graduating in the Grafton schools went to Alton and after graduation from Alton high school accepted a position in the Alton Savings Bank. He resigned his position in the bank to accept a position with the Mississippi Lime Co. While employed with this company he had an attack of grippe, and his lungs became affected. He was treated at the mount St. Rose Sanatarium for eight months and returned home for several months having apparently recovered his health. He resumed his position with the Mississippi Lime and Material Co. who gave him a position as a salesman that he might have the advantage of air and sunshine. But a severe cold brought a return of the former disease. After a short time in a hospital in St. Louis he returned to his parents home in Grafton, but as he was gradually growing worse, he entered the Madison County Sanitarium November 25, where he remained until god called him home. When Paul was nine years of age he became a member of the MW church and was a regular at Sunday school. He was moral, upright and never spoke ill of anyone or allowed others to do so in his presence. He was a general favorite among his associates and in all his years of suffering never complained. When visited by his parents and friends at the sanitarium they always found him cheerful and optimistic of the future. The funeral was held at the Grafton ME church at 2 o’clock p.m. Sunday, January 10, Rev. Marion Jackson of Vernon officiating, assisted by Rev. M. L. Watson, pastor of the church and the remains were laid to rest in the IOOF cemetery. The large number of floral tributes and the many friends assemble to sympathize with the bereaved relatives and pay last respects to his memory attest to the high esteem of those who knew him best.

MILLER. Died 12-06-1975. Final rites for Roy U. Miller, 76, of 109 Lincoln, Jerseyville will be conducted at 10 o’clock this morning, June 12, at Jacoby Funeral Home with the Rev. Leonard Todd officiating. He was pronounced dead on arrival at 7:55 am on June 10 at Jersey Community Hospital. Interment will be in the Fieldon cemetery. A carpenter, he was born September 12, 1898 in Harrisburg, and was a World War II veteran. Miller was a member of the American Legion. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Sophia Schaaf Miller; and a daughter, Mrs. Dale (Doris) Dickerson of East Alton; one grandchild.
MILLER. Ruea Miller, 89, died at 3:20 am. today, November 13, 1987 at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville. She was born in Missouri, a daughter of the late James and Margaret (Brakefield) Evans. On September 19, 1917 she married C. Marvin Miller in Missouri. He died December 2, 1977. Surviving are four sons, Earsie Miller of Fieldon, Dallas and Carl Miller, both of Delhi, and ira Miller of Jerseyville; three daughters Dolly McIntire and Margaret Evancho, both of Jerseyville, and Irene wells of Bloomington; 56 grandchildren, 76 great grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Carrie Wilkinson. Two sons preceded her in death, Leo and Loy Miller. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Saturday With services at 1 pm Sunday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Burial will be in Fieldon cemetery, and memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
MILLER. Died 21-12-1981. Services were held Wednesday at Warner-Targhetta Funeral Home in Brighton for Sarah Elizabeth Miller, 91, formerly of Jerseyville. She died at 9 am December 21 at Calhoun Comprehensive Care Center. Born in Jersey County, she was a daughter of the late John and Hattie Glass Hunter. She married Horace Miller who preceded her in death and later married Sidney Miller who died in 1942. Her survivors are a son, Harvey of Jerseyville; four grandchildren; and two sisters, Hettie White of Medora and Alice Conyear of Alton. Burial was in Shipman cemetery.
MILLER. Stella G. Miller, 88, died at 11:30 am Tuesday, June 10, 1986, at Jersey Community hospital after a lengthy illness. She was born in Piasa and was a school teacher for 37 years in Jersey County School District Unit 100. The daughter of the late William and Mary (Roettgers) Garber, she married Truman F. Miller in 1919, in St. Louis. He died in March, 1960. Survivors include one daughter, Alice Lee of Godfrey; one son, Stanley Miller of Jerseyville; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be after4:30 pm today at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. at the United Methodist church of Jerseyville, visitation will be from noon Thursday Until service time at 1 pm. With Rev. Francis “Mike” Michels officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be sent to the church, where she was a member.
MILLER. Died 05-09-1967. Sylvester Lynn Miller of Jerseyville, a retired oil distributor, died Tuesday, September 5, in a hospital in Sacramento, California, where he had been a patient for about a week. The body is being returned to Jerseyville and will be taken to Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where visitation hours will be held after three o’clock Friday afternoon. Requiem mass will be celebrated by Rev. Father Francis Lee at ten o’clock Saturday morning, September 9, at St. Francis Xavier church and burial will be in St. Francis cemetery. Mr. Miller had been at the home of a son, Roy E. Miller at Tahoe Valley, California, since early in July. He was a son of the late Amos and Rosella White Miller and was born in Jersey County March 21, 1892. Mr. Millers age at death was 75 years, 5 months, and 14 days. Surviving him in addition to his son, Roy of Tahoe Valley is another son, James Miller of Springfield, Illinois; a brother, William Miller of Calimesa, California, one sister, Mrs. Mary E. Lanham of Jerseyville and twelve grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Mary Flamm Miller, and one daughter, Mrs. Mary Helen Heneghan.
MILLER. Died 06-06-1980. Graveside rites were conducted Thursday afternoon at the Grimes Neely cemetery for Theodore Y. Miller, 80, whose death occurred at 9:15 pm June 6 at Garnet’s Chateau Annex. A laborer, he was born November 8, 1900 in East St. Louis. He is survived by his wife, the former Opal Ketten, of Belleville; a daughter, Anna Marie Goeddel of Belleville; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The Rev. R. E. George officiated.

Mr. Tillman MILLER, a laborer in the employ of Mrs. H. N. JARBOE, living in the southern part of the city, was found dead in his bed Monday morning. The coroner, Dr. Williams, summoned a jury composed of Dr. A. A. SHOBE, Dr. T. A. KINGS, Dr. E. L. H. BARRY, Geo. W. WHITE, Johnson NORRIS, and M. D. SELBY, and held an inquest. The evidence of Mrs. H. N. Jarboe, Miss Lizzie Jarboe, and Orville A. Jarboe, was to the effect that he had been employed by Mrs. Jarboe as gardener for the past four months, was 61 years of age, and a bachelor. He had been complaining of not feeling well, but had been at work. Last Sunday evening he went to bed seemingly as well as usual, and when Mrs. Jarboe called him about half past four or five o’clock in the morning, she discovered that he was dead. The verdict of the jury was, “We, the undersigned jury, sworn to examine into the cause of the death of Mr. T. Miller, do hereby state that from a careful examination of the body and the evidence presented, that the deceased came to his death from natural causes.” The deceased had been living in this vicinity for several years, and was a quiet citizen and generally liked by all who knew him. MILLER. Died 20-09-1988. William A. Miller, 91 formerly of Jerseyville, died September 20, 1988, at his home in Ramona, California After a lengthy illness. He was born October 8, 1896. He was a member of the Jerseyville Lodge No. 394 AF & AM. Also surviving are a son, Rueben Devies Miller of California; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren; nieces and nephews: Arthur Anderson of Denver, Colorado, Jack Keefe, Jr ., of Savannah, Georgia, Mary Anny Heneghan Daum and Joseph Heneghan both of Carrollton, Thomas Heneghan of Fairfield, California and Jeanne Heneghan Dean of Quincy. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Ray E. Miller and Sylvester Lynn Miller; three Sisters, Alma Miller Major, Jessie Miller Anderson and Mary Miller Lanham. His body was cremated. A memorial service was held. He married Catherine Alderson on April 20, 1920; she survives.
MILLER. William A. Miller, 91, of Ramona, Calif, formerly of Jerseyville, died at 5:10 am Tuesday, September 20 1988 at his home, after a lengthy illness. On April 20, 1920, he married the former Catherine Alderson, and she survives. Also surviving are a son, Reuben Devies Miller of California; two grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray E. and Sylvester Miller; and three Sisters, Alma Major, Jessie Anderson and Mary Lanham. The body was cremated. MILLERING. Died 00-00-1966. Mrs. Adtline Millering, 52, wife of William Millering of 3220 Edsall St., a pipefitter at Shell Oil Co., died at 5:10 pm Monday in St. Anthony’s hospital. Mrs. Millering had been in ill health for two years and a patient in the hospital since January 26. She was born may 26, 1914 at Grafton, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Carey. She moved with her parents to Alton in early childhood and attended the elementary schools and Alton high school. While attending Alton High School she moved with her parents to Gunnison, Mississippi, where she was graduated from high school and worked for three years in the Gunnison post office. She married December 25, 1937, in Alton to William Millering and all of their married life was spent in Alton. Mrs. Millering was a member of First Methodist church and the United Society of Christian Service, and other women’s organizations of the church. Surviving beside her husband are a son, Robert of Bethalto, an employee of the Alton Evening Telegraph; two daughters, Mrs. Shirley Schaefer, Urbana, and Miss Jane Millering, Alton; a sister, Mrs. Rosalie Russell, Mendota, Illinois and a brother, Lynn Schlansker, University City, Missouri. There are four grandchildren. The body is at Streeper Funeral Home where the Rev. Laurence Wagley, pastor of First Methodist church, will officiate at services Thursday at 10:am. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Park. Visitation at the Funeral Home will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday. The American Cancer society has been named as a memorial.

Miller of Jerseyville and Priscilla Bradley of Banbridge Island, Washington; two sons, John H. Wimmersberg of El Paso, Texas, and Michael H. MILLS. Leslie Ray Mills, 74, died at 4:15 pm Saturday January 4, 1992 at Jersey Community Hospital after a brief illness. He was a roller at Olin Corporation in the brass mill for 35 years, retiring in 1977. Born April 14, 1917 in Gallatin County, he was a son of the late Clarence and Melvina (Cox) Mills. Surviving are two sons, Charles Ray Mills of Alton and David Lynn Mills of California; three grandchildren, and three Sisters; Lillina Nohave and Louise Johnson, both of East Alton, and Mary Ruth Stabel of Perryton, Texas. MILNER. George Milner of Kane received word Sunday of the death of his nephew, Wayne Milner, 45, which occurred Saturday at Hammond, Indiana. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Milner, Sr. of Jerseyville. Surviving him in addition to his wife, one sister, Mrs. Milford Whitlock of Jerseyville, and two brothers, Homer of Godfrey and Harry Jr. of Alton. The family formerly resided at Kane. Funeral rites were held Tuesday afternoon at four o’clock and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville.

MINARD. Died 00-11-1876. From Weekly Republican November 17, 1876: Mr. Jerry Minard, an old resident of Jerseyville and Jersey County, was buried in the old cemetery in this city Monday last. He has been living on south Otter Creek in most destitute circumstances. He built the house now occupied by Richards and Field, and was a founder and builder of what is known as “Jerry Town” now included in city limits of Jerseyville.
MINARD. Opal G. Minard, 84, died at 5 pm Monday, October 29, 1990 at home. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors Lodge. Born in Hancock County, she was the daughter of the late Floyd E. and Sarah Blanche (Orth) Howell. On July 7, 1931, in Gladstone, she married William Minard, and he died on March 21, 1985. Surviving are a daughter, Marjorie Cope of Jerseyville; three grandchildren; a great grandchild; a brother, Richard Howell of Lombard; and a sister, Cathryn Smith of Jerseyville. Preceding her in death were two Sisters, Evelyn Meyer and Helen Haushalter; and three brothers, Elmer, Gerald and Earl Frederick Howell. She was a registered nurse for 16 years at Jersey Community Hospital and for her husband, Dr. Robt. Mindrup, whom she married on April 6, 1935, in Joliet. Born in Chariton, Iowa, she was the daughter of the Late Glenn Allison and Josephine (Patton) Peasley. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Cynthia Maggiore of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; a son, Bruce Patton Mindrup of Jerseyville; eight grandchildren; and a brother, Dr. Robert Lee Peasley, d.d.s. of Carlinville. A son, Robert Patton Mindrup, and a grandson preceded her in death. Visitation is from 4 to 9 pm Thursday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home in Jerseyville. MINER. Obit dated February 4, 1904: Wm. G. Miner, eldest son of Chas F. and Harriet Miner (nee Birkenmayer) died December 30, 1903 at 11 o’clock pm at the home of his parents, 4023 Scanlan Pl., St. Louis, Missouri. He was born June 6, 1876 on a farm northeast of Jerseyville where he lived until about six years of age, when he moved to St. Louis where he has since resided. Early in life he made a profession of religion. Happy and loving in disposition he will be sadly missed by the father, mother, sisters, brother, relatives and a host of friends, and especially the young folks with whom he was a favorite, who are left to mourn their loss. The remains were brought to Fidelity January 2, 1904 and interred in Oak Grove cemetery where so short a time before, his sister Grace was laid to rest.

MISEGADES. Julia Misegades, 82, of Jerseyville, died February 14, 1988 at Greenwood Manor Nursing Home in Jerseyville. She was born in Carrollton to the late Frank P. and Julia (Keouhgan) McDonough. She was a secretary for the St. Louis Diabetes Association for 10 years. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier church in Jerseyville. Survivors include sister Catherine Curran of Jerseyville. She was preceded in death by sisters, Helen Mcdounough, Sarah Mcdonough and Mary Browing and brother James Mcdonough. The funeral was March 1, 1988 at St. Francis Xavier church with the Revs Henry Schmidt and Thomas McQueeny as concelebrants. Burial was in St. Francis Xavier cemetery. A memorial has been established to St. Francis Xavier Catholic church.
MISKELL. Alice Miskell, teacher-legal secretary-school treasurer-who died of lung cancer in September of 1982, left a legacy to fight the disease that killed her. Mrs. Miskell left $33,729 to the planned giving legacy of the American Cancer Society research division, in a will she wrote herself, in January of 1981, just a few months after the disease was diagnosed. She left bequeaths to an elderly uncle who lives in Kansas, two cousins and six cousins of her late husband, James Miskell and she also left $1,000 to father Joseph Dineen of St. Patrick’s church in Grafton. “Alice was a person who was completely alone, her immediate family was gone. She felt she has no one to leave her estate to. If there was anything left after the costs of her illness, she wanted it to be of value to mankind,” said Helen Wuestenfeld, a personal friend of Mrs. Miskell. Dr. H. E. Wuestenfeld, who was both her friend and physician said “up till she got sick, Alice had supper with us every Sunday night, from the time her husband died.” James Miskell, optometrist, died in 1958. In may of 1981 she was about to come home from the hospital when she fell and broke her hip. She had suffered a fractured hip in an auto accident in 1963, according to Dr. Wuestenfeld. Mrs. Paul Reddish, another friend, said of the legacy “it was a beautiful thing for her to do. Alice was a very quiet person. She kept her own council. Not very often did she open up.” Mrs. Reddish said Alice resigned her position as treasurer of Unit 100 School District in time to train her replacement Harold Ballard, but she never gave up her position as treasurer of the Nutwood Drainage District. She always felt the treatments would give her more time. “She still had her sense of humor to the end.” said Mrs. Reddish. Attorney Claude Davis, a friend and also co-administrator of her will, said Alice and James Miskell came to Jerseyville in the early 50’s along with a number of other professional people, which included the Wuesentenfelds, Dr. and Mrs. Clark Doak, Dr. and Mrs. A. A. Vanwalleghan, attorney and Mrs. John Self, attorney and Mrs. Will Hacker and the Davis’. “We were all outsiders, except for Virginia Hacker, and we kind of formed our own social group. There was a bridge club and we all stayed close throughout the years.” “Alice worked for a prestigious law firm in Chicago, while Jim got his education.” said Davis. In Jerseyville, she worked for the law firm of Schwarz and self. She was assistant County Superintendent of Schools under O. A. Wilson, and left that position to work in the State Office of Public Instruction. She later taught in Delhi and became treasurer of Unit 100. She also worked for attorney Tom Ryder. David Mills, superintendent of the Jersey-Greene-Calhoun educational service region said he found Mrs. Miskell to be a”very dedicated individual in any endeavor she undertook, both in the educational field as well as outside it.” Paul Powell, chairman of the Jersey County Chapter of the American Cancer society, said in a tribute to Mrs. Miskell, “the fight against cancer in Jersey County has received outstanding help in a legacy through the will of the late Alice Miskell.”

MISKELL. Died 00-05-1958. Dr. James Robert Miskell, Jerseyville optometrist who disposed of his practice two years ago because of ill health, died at the family residence, 1110 West Exchange, this city, at seven-fifteen o’clock Tuesday morning. His health had been impaired for the past six years. Services for Dr. Miskell are being held at one o’clock this (Thursday) afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. David B. Maxton of Granite City, formerly pastor of the First Presbyterian church in Jerseyville, officiating. Burial will take place in Frieden’s cemetery in Troy, Illinois. Dr. Miskell, a veteran of World War II with service in the South Pacific, came to Jerseyville to establish his practice of optometry ten and one-half years ago. He held a degree from Monroe College of Optometry in Chicago, and had located for a short time in Centralia, before coming to this city. During his residency here Dr. Miskell took an active interest in civic and fraternal organizations. In recognition of his services as a former club secretary and member of the Sight Conservation Committee for seven years, the Jerseyville Lions Club extended an honorary membership to the optometrist several months ago. Other civic efforts of the decedent were channeled through the Jerseyville junior Chamber of Commerce and the Jersey County Chapter of the American Red Cross. He formerly served as chairman of the blood program of the latter organization. In fraternal circles Dr. Miskell was past master of the Jerseyville Lodge AF & AM No. 394, a member of the Royal Arch Chapter and the Loyal Order of Moose. He also held membership in Worthy Post American Legion, and in connection with his profession was a member of the Illinois Optometric Association. Last March, Dr. Miskell was voted an honorary life membership in the professional association. The decedent was born in Sadorus, Illinois, December 1, 1915, a son of the Late Robert Cave Miskell and Mrs. Lottie Hammer Miskell of Champaign. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Alice Miskell, Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Jersey County; his mother; one sister, Mrs. Jack Sullivan of Champaign; one brother, Lawrence Miskell of Detroit, Michigan; three nieces and two nephews.

She was born August 29, 1887 in Illinois, a daughter of Robert and Mary Maloney Lahey. She is survived by her husband, Ora Mitchell of San Francisco, California; one daughter, Mrs. Rowland Nielson of Ukiah, California; two grandchildren; Nephews, Stewart and Paul Sweeney of Jerseyville and Robert Lahey of Alton; two nieces, Grace Fromm and Helen Canavan of St. Louis. Visitation was held at the Jacoby Funeral Home Wednesday evening where the rosary was recited at 8 o’clock.

MITCHELL. Dorothy Mitchell, 79, died Monday, September 23, 1991, at her daughter’s home in winchester. Born on July 29, 1912, in Fieldon, she was a daughter of the Late Isom and Ada (Young) Schaaf. She married Charles Mitchell on February 15, 1931 in Jerseyville. He died December 27, 1974. Surviving are five sons, Charles Mitchell of Alsey, L. C. Mitchell of Virginia Illinois, George Mitchell of Silvis and Thomas and Clyde Mitchell, both of Murrayville; a daughter, Reba Witwer of Sinchester; 16 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; a brother, Fred Schaaf of Jerseyville; and four sisters, Rosemary Schaaf of Fieldon, Hazel Thompson of Kane and Sophia Miller and Margie Dilks, both of Jerseyville. Two brothers, Henry and Julius Schaaf, and a sister, Alberta Evans, preceded her in death. Visitation is from 1:30 to 9 pm Wednesday at Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville, where services are at 11 am Thursday. The Rev. Phillip Dunn will officiate. Burial is in Murrayville cemetery.
MITCHELL. Lydia Elizabeth Mitchell, 85, died at 5 am today, March 26, 1991, at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. She was born on August 22,1905, in Jersey County, daughter of the late William Robert and Mary (Harris) Down. On April 26, 1955, she married John Mitchell in Jerseyville. He died on December 31, 1965. Nieces and nephews survive, including Marie Piepert of Brighton and William Down of Granite City. Preceding her in death were two brothers, Harry and Elmer Down; and three sisters, Lelia Junette, Myrtle Jones and Nellie Williams. Visitation is from 8 am Thursday until service time at 11 am at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Rev. Paul Snow will officiate. Burial is in Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to Delhi Baptist church, where she was a member.
MITCHELL. Died 18-06-1972. Dated 6-27-1972: Funeral mass for Mrs. Martha Emily Mitchell, 81, of this city was celebrated Wednesday morning at St. Francis Xavier church with Father R. T. Shea, celebrant. She was pronounced dead on arrival at Jersey Community Hospital on June 18. Interment was in St. Francis Xavier cemetery. She was born December 9, 1890 in Jerseyville, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Aylward England. Mrs. Mitchell at one time had been a nurse’s aide at the state hospital. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. E. A. (Dorothy Jane) Rudolph of Orinda, California; one grandchild; and one sister, Mrs. Irene Laurie of Louisville, Kentucky. Her parents and four sisters preceded her in death. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home where the rosary was recited Tuesday evening.
MITZEL. Harold A. Mitzel, 81, of Tampa, Florida, formerly of Jerseyville, died at 1:45 pm Thursday, October 29, 1987 at his residence. Mitzel was a branch manager with the Provident Life and Accident Insurance Co. in Detroit for more than 40 years. He was born in Jerseyville, son of the late August and Sarah (Boyer) Mitzel. His wife, the former Grace Mott died August 30, 1985. Surviving are two sons, John W. and Richard M. Mitzel, both of Tampa, Florida; four grandchildren; and five sisters, Agnes Mitzel of Jerseyville, Pauline Pohlman and Millie Lou Whitley, both of Springfield, Marie Mitzel of St. Louis and Leona Fleckenstein of Chicago. Visitation is scheduled 4:30 to 9 pm Sunday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 am Monday at Holy Ghost church in Jerseyville. The Rev. William Hembrow and Msgr P. P. Hienen will concelebrate. Burial will be at St. Francis cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to masses or Holy Ghost church.
MITZEL. Died 06-12-1967. Dated 12-7-1967: Mrs. Sarah M. Mitzel of 328 East Arch Street, Jerseyville, died at two o’clock Wednesday morning, December 6, at Waters Nursing Home where she had been a patient the past ten days. Her health had been impaired for some time. Visitation hours will be held at the Gubser Funeral Home after seven o’clock Thursday evening. The rosary will be recited Friday night at eight o’clock. A concelebrated requiem mass will take place at ten o’clock Saturday morning at the church of the Holy Ghost with Father Robert L. Heintz of Jerseyville and Father P. O. Heinen of Taylorville officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis cemetery. Mrs. Mitzel was born in Bloomsdale, Missouri, August 2, 1874 , a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Boyer. Her age at death was ninety-three years, four months, and four days. Surviving Mrs. Mitzel are seven daughters; Misses Blanche and Agnes Mitzel and Mrs. James (Irene) Walsh of Jerseyville, Miss Marie Mitzel of St. Louis, Mrs. August (Pauline) Pohlman of Carrollton, Mrs. Leo (Leona) Flechenstein of Chicago, and Mrs. Francis (Milly Lou) Whitley of Springfield; one son, Harold Mitzel of Detroit, Michigan, sixteen grandchildren and thirty-three great grandchildren. Her husband, August Mitzel; two sons, Fran and Raymond, and one daughter, Ruth Ann, preceded her in death.
