CRABTREE. Clinton F. Crabtree, 71, died at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 1989, at his home after a lengthy illness. A World War II veteran of the U. S. Army, Crabtree was a carpenter with Local Union 337 of Alton before retiring in 1984. Born in Fanshaw, Okla., he was the son of the late William D. and America P. Crabtree. He married the former Josephine “Dodie” Perdun April 15, 1944, in Palo Alto, Calif. Survivors include his wife; and four sister, Audrey Cagle of Tecumseh, Okla., Mabel Alvey of Apache, Okla., Inez Shockey of Beumodnt, Calif., and Wanda Allender of New Brunsfels, Texas. He was preceded in death by a son, Lloyd “Pete” Crabtree; a brother, Claude Crabtree; and a sister, Modez Crabtree. Visitation is 4-9 p.m. Tuesday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday by the Revs. Howard Opperman and John Shelton. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to a charity of one’s choice.
CRABTREE. Died 30-10-1957. Lloyd (Pete) Carbtree, only child of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Crabtree of the Otterville vicinity, died at one fifty-five o’clock Wednesday afternoon, October 30, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Alton where he had been moved for treatment the preceding evening. “Pete”, a fifth grade student at the Otterville School, became ill last week and on Friday his illness was diagnosed as strep throat. He was moved to the Hospital Tuesday night and x-ray examination disclosed that pneumonia had developed. Relatives were summoned to his bedside about five o’clock Wednesday morning and his death occurred early in the afternoon. The lad would have been twelve years old on November 17. he was born in Alton, a son of Clinton and Jospehine Perdun Crabtree. In addition to his parents, the boy is survived by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Perdun of Fieldon, and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. A. P. Crabtree of Apache, Oklahoma. Friends may call at the Gubser Funeral Home after seven o’clock this (Thursday) evening. Services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville Saturday, November 2, at two o’clock. Reverend Claus Evans of Bethalto will officiate and burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
CRAIG. Died 29-01-1976. The funeral of Leslie Wilson Craig, 87, of Lemoore, Calif., formerly of Medora, was conducted on Feb. 2 in Lemoore with interment in the Cranesville Cemetery. he died on Jan. 29 in Fresno, Calif. A retired banker, he was born on the Craig farm west of Fidelity, a son of the late Tunis and Lucy Wilson Craig. Craig started his banking career with the Farmers State Bank of Medora and was later affiliated with the Boatmen Nation Bank in St. Louis. He retired from the Security National Bank in Los Angeles, Calif. where he had worked for 40 years. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Nellie Day Craig; and a sister, Mrs. Lucy Seets of Indianapolis, Ind., nieces and nephews. Two of his nieces, Mrs. Keneth Brietwiser and Mrs. Doris Hunt of the Shipman area went to California to attend the services.
CRAIG. The funeral of Mrs. Lorraine A. Craig of R. 1 Jerseyville will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Dec. 20 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Claude Evans of Bethalto officiating. Her death occurred at 3:45 a.m. on Dec. 18 at Alton Memorial Hospital. She was born April 11, 1910 in Ellsberry, Mo., a daughter of Willliam and Della Adcox Trent. Mrs. Craig was a member of the Fidelity Home Extension Unit and the Paradise Baptist Church. her survivors include her husband, Henry R. Craig,; one son, Roger P. Craig of Bethalto; four daughters, Mrs. Ruth L. Flanery, Webster Grove, Mo., Mrs. Walter Sullivan, Carrollton, Mrs. Hubert Coonrad, Taylorville, Mrs. Ronald G. Woodson, Carlinville. Her mother, Mrs. Della Trent, Garden Grove, Calif; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, lee Trent, Oceanside, Calif., Rose M. Trent and Mrs. Grace Gloor, Orange, Calif., Mrs. Donna Wilkinson, Texarkana, Texas. She was preceded in death by her father, one grandson and a great-grandson. The Paradise Baptist Church maintenance fund has been named as a memorial.
CRAIG. Died 20-04-1944. Staff Sergeant Tunnis Craig, grandson of Mrs. Lucy Craig of Medora and the late Tunis H. Craig who served as a member of the Jersey County Board of Supervisors from Fidelity Township for 14 years was killed in a glider crash at South Plains Field, Lubbock Texas, Thursday afternoon, April 20. The body was brought to the Whitfield & Warner funeral home in Medora, Saturday, and on Sunday morning was removed to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Craig, in Piasa where it was kept until the time of the funeral. Military rites were held at the Piasa Baptist Church at 2 p.m., Monday, April 24. Rev. G. A. Wilson, pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Tallula, who married Sgt. Craig and his wife five years ago, officiated and interment was in the Medora Cemetery. The young man was born in Rocky ord, Colorado, February 25, 1914. With his parents he moved to Piasa 18 years ago and was graduated from the Medora High School in 1931
CRAIN. Died 14-12-1986. Belva Wedding Crain, 78, of Denver, Colo., formerly of Jerseyville, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 1986, at Porter Hospital in Denver. She was the daughter of the late Collie and Zoe Wedding, and her husband, Francis Crain, preceded her in death. She was a retired schoolteacher, having taught at schools in Chicago and Denver. Surviving are two sons, Richard Crain of LaGrange and Steve Crain of Denver; a daughter, Judy Schafer of Wheaton; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; seven brothers, Phillip and James Wedding, both of Godfrey, William Wedding of Dow, Charles Wedding of Seattle, Wash., Clinton Wedding of Medora, Quentin wedding of Dennison, Texas and Gene Wedding of Sentinel, Okla., and two sisters, Sarah Wade of Kissimmee, Fla., and Orpha Witt of Jerseyville. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Hallowell & James Funeral Home in LaGrange Ill. Services will be conducted at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Friday. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Cemetery in LaGrange.
CRAIN. Died 19-01-1984. James F. Crain, 40, of Bollingbrook, son of the former Belva Wedding of Jerseyville, died Jan. 19 at Rush St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago after a long illness. He was an engineer for Dresser Industries for six years. His survivors are his wife, the former Sandra Whitlock; sons, James Jr., Patrick and Christopher; daughter, Michelle; two brothers, richard and Stephen; and a sister, Judith Schaffer. Services were conducted Monday afternoon at the Community Baptist Church in Warrenville with burial in Chapel Hill Garden-West Cemetery at Elmhurst. Brookridge Funeral Home arrangements.
CRAIN. Died -06-1881. Mrs. Isaac Crain, killed by lightning Tues of last week, was buried Thursday from the residence of Dr. Botkin, Fidelity. Her daughter, Mrs. John Kearney, died the day of her mother’s funeral and was buried Friday. Miss Crain has been rendered deaf in her left ear and blind in her left eye. The little daughter of Mrs. John Kearney, who was sitting on the lap of her grandmother, Mrs. Isaac Crain, at the time Mrs. Crain was killed, is wholly uninjured. Dr. Botkin and his neighbors have done much of the family.
CRAIN, Silas. REVOLUTIONARY WAR SOLDIER. SILAS CRAIN, Sr. was born in 1762, died in 1842 and is buried in LAX CEMETERY. SILAS CRAIN, His father, was born in 1730 in Virginia, died in Jersey Co., Illinois in 1812 and was a Revolutionary War Soldier and was buried in the old cemetery in Jerseyville, Illinois. His tombstone is now located in the Jersey County Historical Society Museum and contains the following inscription:
SILAS CRAIN, A NATIVE OF VA AND A REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER, DIED IN JERSEY CO., ILL JAN 1812, AGED 82 YEARS
It was the belief of a few of the members of our society that there surely was at least one Revolutionary War Soldier buried in the Old Cemetery in Jerseyville. The stone located in the Historical Society Museum is prove that these beliefs were correct.
CRAINE. Died -01-1893. Hettie Craine daughter of Silas and Margaret Craine.
CRANDELL. Died 29-08-1959. Mrs. Iva N. Crandell, widow of James Crandall, died at her home in Grafton Saturday afternoon, August 29, at one-twenty o’clock. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where funeral services were held at two o’clock Monday afternoon with Reverend William K. Botner of Grafton officiating. Burial was in Scenic Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Crandell, daughter of the late Hiram and Julia Hill White, was born in Jersey County, and her age on her last birthday, January 12, was eighty-seven years. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Andrew Holzwarth of Maplewood, Missouri; one son, Ephriam Crandell of Grafton; six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and five great, great grandchildren. Her parents and daughter, Mrs. Blanche C ?? preceded her in death.
CRANE. Died -11-1897. Died, Mrs. Crane, who for many years was a resident of Grafton. Parson Randle conducted funeral service. Burial in Grafton cemetery. She has one son and a daughter living in Grafton and three sons and one daughter at other places.
CRANE. Died 19-11-1897. Mrs. Martha Crane, a former resident of this place died in St. Louis. Nov. 19 and her remains brought here last Sat. for burial. Funeral from ME church. Born in Butler Co., Ohio April 9th, 1828 and has lived in Grafton most of the time during the last 28 years. Went to live with son, Gaston, in St. Louis. Leaves many friends in Grafton.
CRANE. Died 12-01-1974. Funeral services were held Jan. 14 at the Bethel Baptist Church for Stella Muriel Crane, 76, of 417 E. Spruce St., Jerseyville whose death occurred Jan. 12 at Garnet’s Chateau. Rev. Earl Clagg officiated at the rites. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery. She was born April 2, 1897 in Green County a daughter of John and Sarah Mains Grizzle. Mrs. Crane was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, Kenneth and Donald Crane of Kane; two daughters, Miss Florence Crane of Jerseyville and Mrs. Obert (Oleta) Hillig of Lancaster, Calif., six grandchildren; one brother, Freeman…(rest of article missing).
CRAVENS. Died 30-09-1966. Mrs. Dorothy Greene Cravens, wife of Lawrence A. Cravens, a member of the faculty of the Jersey Community High School, died Friday afternoon, September 30, at 3:15 o’clock at the Jersey Community Hospital where she had been a patient for twelve days. Mrs. Cravens had been in ill health the past few months. The family home is at 908 West Spruce Street, this city. Visitation hours were held at the Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, October 3, at 1:30 o’clock at the First Baptist Church with the pastor Rev. Carlton Christenson, officiating. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery at Greenfield. Mrs. Cravens was a daughter of the late George and Jesse McClure Greene and was born at Rockbridge on March 13, 1907. She was aged fifty-nine years, six months, and seventeen days. Surviving her in addition to her husband, are one son, Dr. James G. Cravens, and one grandson, John Cravens, of Lawton, Oklahoma, two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Bauer of Greenfield and Mrs. Helen Whitesides of Eldred, and two brothers, Louis Greene of Greenfield and Kent Greene of Owosso, Michigan.
CRAVENS. Buried 13-03-1974. Funeral services and burial for James G. Cravens, D.D.S., M.D., of Wausau, Wis., were held in Wausau on March 13. He was the son of Lawerence A. Cravens, a former Jerseyville resident and teacher at the local high school. D. Cravens was born May, 3 1935 in Peoria, the son of Lawrence Cravens and the late Dorothy Greene Cravens. He was a graduate of Bradley University, Peoria, the University of Illinois Dental College, and University of Illinois Medical School. During a three year residency at the University of Illinois, Dr. Cravens was a clinical instructor. He served his residency in general surgery at Hines Veterans Hospital in Hines. Dr. Cravens was graduated first in his class from dental college and second in his class form medical school. His professional associations included membership in Wausau hospital’s medical staff; Marathon County medical staff; Marathon County Dental Society and the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology. He was a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons, a member of the board of directors of Montessori Schools, and belonged to two national honor fraternities. Dr. Cravens was associated with Dr. John V. Flannery, Jr., in the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic S.C., in Wausau. His survivors are his wife, Janice (Hoven) Cravens; two sons, John A. and Michael J., and a daughter, Sarah J., all at home; his father, Lawrence A., and a half brother, Daniel Cravens of Mt. Sterling. A cancer fund has been established in Dr. Cravens’ name at the University of Illinois Medical School, and its aim will be to aid worthy medical students in cancer research.
CRAVENS. Died 17-04-1975. Lawrence Cravens of Mt. Sterling, a former member of the Community Unit 100 faculty, died on April 17 from a heart attack. He was born in the Greenfield area on Feb. 25, 1903. Cravens was employed as an Industrial Arts teacher in Unit 100 in 1954 and had been with the Guidance Department at Jersey Community High School for four or five years prior to his retirement in June 1970. He is survived by his widow, the former Margaret Drew who also was a former member of the high school faculty, teaching in the English department; and a son, Danny. One son, Jim Cravens, preceded him in death. The funeral was conducted Saturday at St. Mary’s Church in Mt. Sterling with interment in St. Sterling.
CRAWFORD. Died 05-01-1983. Services for Burl Walter Crawford, 71, a lifelong Kane resident, were conducted Jan. 8 at the Kane Baptist Church by the Reverend Peter Ely. Burial was in the Kane Cemetery. He died unexpectedly at 7:05 p.m. Jan. 5 at Jersey Community Hospital. Born Oct. 28, 1911 in Kane Township, he was a son of Francis M. and Myrtle Allen Crawford. Crawford retired in 1976 from Laclede Steel where he was a locomotive operator. His survivors are his wife, Violet; six daughters, Joan Foster, Janet Kallal, Jane Snyder and June Heberling of Kane, Jean Bruant of Ferguson, Mo. and Joy Bray of Jerseyville; one brother, Paul Crawford of Minnesota, and a sister, Ruby Smith of Eoila, Mo; 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The Kane Baptist Church and Jersey Community Hospital Intensive Care Unit have been designated as memorials.
CRAWFORD. Died 29-11-1978. Services for Elmer W. Crawford, 79, of 4994-A Mardel, St. Louis were held Friday at Hoffmeister’s Colonial Mortuary with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Louis. He died at St. Mary’s Hospital on Nov. 29. Born in Jerseyville, he was the son of the late William and Lula Scoggins Crawford. Crawford was an employee of Kroger’s Warehouse in St. Louis until retiring in 1964. His survivors are his wife, the former Lillian Smith; a daughter, Virginia Dockery of St. louis; two, Melvin, St. Louis and Jack, Houston, Tex.; three sister, Mamie and Jewell Mae Crawford and Mildred Carr, Wood River; and four brothers, Joe of Jerseyville, Raymond, Wood River, Lester, Alton and Lee of Brussels.
CRAWFORD. Died 1969. Funeral services for Isaac David Crawford, 83, of Kane were held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. Jack Brown of Kane officiating. His death occurred Friday afternoon at Boyd Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. Interment was in Kane Cemetery. Mr. Crawford was born in July 3, 1886 in Jersey County, the son of Isaac D. and Jane Bently Crawford. He was a retired Kane Township road commissioner. He is survived by one son, Dual A. Crawford of Kane; four grandsons; three great grandsons and four great granddaughters. His wife, Florence Davenport Crawford, and one daughter, Mrs. Carmen Nestell, preceded him in death. Visitation hours were held at the funeral home.
CRAWFORD. Joseph G. Crawford, 89, of Jerseyville, died Jan. 24 at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis County. He was born June 12, 1896, in Jerseyville to the late William Crawford and Lou Scoggins. He was a self-employed carpenter. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Survivors include brothers Lester of East Alton and Ray of Wood River, and sisters Mildred Carr of Alton and Mae Crawford and Jewell, both of Wood River. Visitation and the rosary were Jan. 26 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The funeral Mass was Jan. 27 at Holy Ghost Church with Msgr. P.P. Heinen. Burial was in Jefferson Barracks.
CRAWFORD. A memorial service for Lawrence Orville Crawford, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Crawford of Old Kane, who has been reported by the government was missing since the sinking of the Pecos during the battle of Java, will be held at the Baptist church in Kane on Sunday afternoon, May 3, at two o’clock. Reverend Raymond Liles of Otterville will deliver the memorial address.
CRAWFORD. Died 16-03-1980. Services for Leo Edward Crawford, 74, of Brussels were conducted Wednesday afternoon at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. He died March 16 at his residence. He was born April 21, 1905 in Brighton, a son of the late William and Lula Scoggins Crawford and was retired from Columbiana Seed Co., Eldred. His wife, the former Viola Shelly, preceded him in death. His survivors are two daughters, Joan Edwards and Jean Smith, both of Godfrey; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Joe Crawford of Jerseyville; Lester of Alton and Raymond of Wood river; three sisters Mildred Carr, Mamie Crawford and Jewell Crawford, Wood river. Two brothers and two sisters also preceded him in death.
CRAWFORD. Mamie Crawford, 87, died Monday, Nov. 20, 1989, at St. Anthony’s Hospital, Alton, after a lengthy illness. Born in Jersey County, she was the daughter of the late William and Lulu (Scroggins) Crawford. She was employed in the kitchen at Alton Mental Heath Center for many years. Surviving are two brothers, Lester Crawford of Alton and Raymond Crawford of Wood River. Visitation is from 11 a.m. Wednesday until service time at 1 p.m. at Staten Funeral Home in Alton with the Rev. Jerry Grant officiating. Burial is in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.
CRAWFORD. William Crawford died Aug. 29, 1959. Born at Elsah, July 2, 1872, 87 years old. Rev. John Lineberry, pastor of Sanford Ave. Baptist Church. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery.
CRAY. Died -05-1892. John Cray born Feb. 16, 1826 in Somerset Co., New Jersey died at his home six miles northeast of Jerseyville. 66 years of age. Funeral from family home. For nearly 40 years his prosperity and interests have been identified with Jersey Co. In 1846 he married Minerva Davis. Four children, two married and settled near old homestead. remains laid to rest in Kellar cemetery near his home. Pallbearers: O. A. Tiff, James S. Daniels, J. G. Marston, M. J. Richey, F. Manns, Caleb Post, H. V. Voorhees, Lawrence Johnson, John Barringer and T. B. Savage.
CRAY. Died 29-11-1928. Lewis Holcomb Cray died at his home in Jerseyville, Nov. 29 at age 57 yrs. Funeral Sunday afternoon from Methodist church, Rev. C. J. Harms of Alton. Born in Jersey Co. Aug. 8, 1871. Son of Tissier and Margaret Davis Cray, prominent residents of Jersey Co. Upon reaching age of 14 he entered clothing business and was one of the pioneers in the commercial life of Jerseyville. On Jan. 6th, 1896 he married Frances E. Henkel of Kane, Ill. Son Chas. L. Cray was born Oct. 11, 1898. He was proud of Jerseyville, proud citizens and friend that he had made in Jerseyville, always pointing out the good things of the city, the citizens and his friends. Dutiful, affectionate and understanding father and husband, ever proud of his family and always seeking a way or means to make things better for them. Was not member of any fraternal order but practiced that cardinal principle of “Brotherly Love.” During early youth Lewis Cray was known beyond the confines of his own county for his great physical strength and ability as a boxer and wrestler. His ability as a boxer at one time took him into the training camp of James Corbett, the holder of the world’s heavyweight crown in that department of the world of athletics. He also served in the capacity of a trainer for George Baptiste, famed wrestler of St. Louis. At one he conducted a gym in the city of Jerseyville. He was a pioneer in field of athletics, a field that today is recognized as an essential element in training of both men and women. Funeral one of the largest ever held at the Methodist church. the esteem in which he was held as a citizen was attested by the multitude of friends of all walks of life who mingles their tears with his ones as they followed his bier to its last resting place.
CRAY. Mrs. Maggie E. Cray, one of oldest residents of Jerseyville, died at her home in city, Oct. 18, 1919. She was Maggie Davis and born in Jersey County about six miles northeast of Jerseyville, July 4, 1835. Married Tiser L. Cray on Sept. 26, 1857. One son survives, Lewis H. Cray of Jerseyville. Three grandchildren, one great-grandchild. Two sister: Mrs. Minerva Cray, Jersey Co., and Mrs. Mary Luckey of Sedalia, Mo. Funeral from home of son, Lewis H. Cray. Rev. F.O. Wilson. Burial in Keller Cemetery northeast of town.
CRESSWELL. Died 02-01-1949. Mrs. Catherine Cresswell, widow of Walter James Cresswell of Elsah, died at one o’clock Monday morning, January 2, at the Villa Terrace Home in Alton. She had been an invalid since sustaining a hip fracture about eight years ago. Mrs. Cresswell was a daughter of the late W. T. and Martha Askew Allen and was born in Elsah Township November 19, 1865. Her age at the time of death was eighty four years, one month and thirteen days. The deceased is survived by one son, Walter J. Cresswell of Elsah; three daughters, Mrs. J. T. Buchanan of San Diego, California, Mrs. Roy Saunders of St. Louis, and Miss Betty Cresswell of Alton; one sister, Mrs. Laura Lowretty Garrell of St. Louis; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Mrs. Cresswell had been a member of the Notch Cliffe Camp, No. 5705, Royal Neighbors of America since 1913. Funeral services were held from the Gent Funeral Home in Alton Wednesday, January 4, at two o’clock. Interment was in the Elsah Cemetery.
CRESSWELL. Died 15-12-1974. Mrs. Grace Barnal Cresswell, 78, of Elsah was pronounced dead on arrival at 12:20 p.m. on Dec. 15 at Alton Memorial Hospital. The funeral was held on Dec. 18 at Gent Chapel in Alton with burial in the Elsah Cemetery. She was born March 24, 1896 in Elsah, a daughter of Michael and Mary Jane Bates Barnal.
CRISSWELL. Ronald Charles Crisswell of Jerseyville, a veteran for two tours of duty in Vietnam and a duty tour in Korea at the time of the Pueblo incident, was killed in an automobile accident at three fifteen o’clock Sunday morning while home on a weekend leave. Young Crisswell was traveling north on the Rangeline Road about one and a quarter mile from when his car apparently went out of control and overturned. A passing motorist saw the wreckage and notified the Sheriffs Department. Chief Deputy Sheriff William Simpson covered the accident and the young serviceman was pronounced dead on arrival at the Jersey Community Hospital. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home on Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. Reverend Earl Clagg officiated and burial was in Oak grove Cemetery. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers after 2:00 p.m., Tuesday. Sp. 4 Crisswell, a son of Ronald Charles and Peggy Jean Hildred Crisswell, was born in Alton, and his age at the time of death was twenty-one years, nine months, and twelve days. His survivors are his stepfather and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Brown of Jerseyville; his father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Crisswell, Sr.,of Elsah; one brother, Randy (rest of article missing).
CRIST. Died 25-04-1977. Louis E. Crist, 59, of R. R. 4, County Road Jerseyville, died at 4:30 p.m. April 25 at Barnes Hospital is St. Louis. Crist was born Sept. 28, 1917 in Rockbridge, the son of the late Clyde and Mabel Moran Crist. He was a maintenance worker for General Telephone, member of the Bethany Baptist Church and the Moose Lodge. Surviving is his wife Vera Mourning Crist who he married Nov. 26, 1968; one stepdaughter, Karen Harlan of East Alton; two sister, Mrs. Harry (Marie) Kelly of Jerseyville and Mrs. Harold (Bertha) Nixon of Chesterfield; two step-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. April 28 (today) at Gubser Funeral Home, the Rev. Everett Chambers officiating. Burial will follow at the Witt Cemetery at Rockbridge. The Kidney Foundation has been designated as a memorial.

Born Dec. 18, 1919 in Otterville, daughter of Hattie Mackelden Mouning of Jerseyville and the late Charles Mourning. Married Louis Crist in Carlinville. He died April 25, 1977. CHRISTY. Died 1912. A. W. Christy, son of John C. and Eliz. Dennison born in Morgan Co. (now Scott Co.) July 29, 1829. In 1864 moved to Jersey Co. from Kane. Married Aug. 24, 1862 to Hannah Armstrong, daughter of Sam and Mary Ann Armstrong – 7 children.
CHRISTY. Died -06-1912. Hannah Armstrong, daughter of Samuel and Mary Ann Armstrong, born in Bucks Co. Penn., May 12, 1842. With parents came to Jersey Co., Ill. in 1849 and lived remainder of life in Jersey and Greene counties. Married Aug. 24, 1862 to Andrew William Christy who preceded her by five months and five days. Seven children, four of whom died in infancy. One son, Harry died Sept. 30, 1907. Two sons; John of Alton and Augustine of Jerseyville. CROCKER. Died 16-01-1952. Funeral services for Charles Crocker, 67, retired Piasa area farmer, were held Sunday afternoon, January 20, at two o’clock at the Piasa Baptist Church with Rev. W. G. Wodicker officiating. Burial was in the Shipman Cemetery. The death of Mr. Crocker, occurred Wednesday, January 16, at 5:50 p.m. at his home in Shipman following a long illness. The decedent was a son of the late John and Emily Murphy Crocker and was born in Jersey County. He had spent the grater part of his life in the Piasa area and following his retirement from farming fifteen years ago moved to Shipman to make his home. Mr. Crocker is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mildred Fritz Crocker; two sons, Edward of Granite City and Morris of Wheatridge, Colorado, and two daughters, Mrs. Wilma Kirby of Litchfield and Mrs. Gertrude Isringhausen of Jerseyville. He also leaves twelve grandchildren.

Zion Baptist Church of Piasa for Mrs. Mildred Crocker, mother of Mrs. Laverne (Gertrude) Isringhausen of Jerseyville, whose death occurred at the Country View Nursing Home at Gillespie. Burial was in the Shipman Cemetery. Visitation hours had been held at the Jacoby – Wise Funeral Home. Mrs. Crocker was born November 5, 1890, in Jersey County. Her parents were George and Ana Reddish Fritz. She was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church at Piasa, Ruby Rebekah Lodge, Jerseyville, Royal Neighbors Lodge, and ATA of Shipman. In addition to her daughter of Jerseyville, her survivors are another daughter, Mrs. Albert (Wilma) Novy of Gillespie; two sons, George Edward Crocker of Edwardsville and Morris Crocker of Wheatridge, Colorado; seventeen grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; three brothers, Sherman, Eugene, and Herschel Fritz of Jerseyville, and three sister, Mrs. Florence Bonnivar of Havanna, Mrs. Ethel Tucker of Medora, and Mrs. Helen Smith of New Athens. Her husband, a son, a sister, and a brother preceded her in death.

Services were held at two-thirty o’clock Sunday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home for Albert Edward Crone of Route One, Jerseyville, whose death occurred at seven thirty-five o’clock Friday evening at the Waters Nursing Home where he had resided the past nine years. Reverend Jack Brown of Kane officiated and burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mr. Crone was born in Greene County, September 25, 1875, a son of the late David and Elizabeth Rae Crone. His age at the time of death was ninety-one years, five months and twenty-nine days. In addition to many years as a farmer, Mr. Crone served on the governing board of Jersey County as Supervisor from Jersey Township. His health had been impaired for a number of years. Surviving Mr. Crone are one son, Edward E., who resides on the family farm north of Jerseyville; three grandsons, Edward B., David M., and Kevin Earl Crone; two sisters, Mrs. M. M. (Charolotte) Post and Mrs. George (Ethel) Belt of Jerseyville; and one brother, Ernest, also of Jerseyville. His parents, two brothers, James and William Robert, and four sisters, Mrs. Margaret Connors, Mrs.Mary Halliday, Mrs. Anna Hefner, and Gladys Fern Crone, preceded him in death.

CRONE. Died 02-06-1977. The funeral of Mrs. Goldie Mae Crone, 65, of 605 West Pine, Jerseyville was held at 1:30 p.m. on July 5 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Srebero officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. She died at 1:50 a.m. on July 2 at Jersey Community Hospital. Mrs. Crone had worked in the kitchen at Jersey Community Hospital. She was born Feb. 8, 1912 in Greene County, a daughter of Oscar F. and Cora Bartow Lister. She is survived by her husband, Virgil Crone of Jerseyville; four sisters, Mrs. Gladys Hudson, Mrs. Tom (Ruby) Young and Mrs. William (Leola) Lawder of Roodhouse and Mrs. Gerald (Irene) Guthrie of Wrights; one brother, Carl Lister, Phoenix, Ariz. Her parents and a brother preceded her in death.
CRONE. Died 01-09-1976. James Thornton Crone, 56, died at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 1 at his home on 503 Cross Ave. He had been in ill health for some time. He was born Dec. 1, 1919 in Jerseyville, a son of James N. and Jessie Ashford Crone and was a carpenter by trade. Crone, a World War II veteran, was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, Lodge 394 AF and AM and was a member of the Demolay Advisory Board. He is survived by his widow, the former Doris Elaine St. Peters; one daughter, Janet Crone and three sons, Dennis, Randall and Mark Crone of Jerseyville; two brothers, Lawrence and Virgil Crone of Jerseyville. His parents, two sisters and three brothers preceded him in death. Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 4 at Jacoby Funeral Home with the Rev. Everett Chambers officiating. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Jacoby Funeral Home where Masonic services will be conducted at 8 p.m. the American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars will be in charge of graveside services. The family has designated the American Cancer Society as a memorial.
CRONE. Died 20-04-1984. Judith Kay Crone, 39, of Alton died unexpectedly at 10:20 a.m. April 29 at St. Luke’s Hospital – West in St. Louis County. She was born Aug. 26, 1944 in St. Louis, daughter of Kermit and Anna Murray Stamps of Jerseyville, and had worked in the office of Alton Packaging Co. for 11 years. She is survived by her husband, Roger Crone whom she married June 29, 1963 in Jerseyville; three daughters, Kathy, Kristen and Kimberly, at home; her parents and a sister, Karen Brunaugh of Aiea, Hawaii. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 4, at the College Avenue Presbyterian Church, Alton, with the Rev. George Humbert officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. The College Avenue Presbyterian Church has been named as a memorial. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 Thursday at Smith Funeral Home, Alton.
CRONE. Died 16-10-1971. Funeral services for Victor Newell Crone, 64, of Patterson, California, formerly of Jerseyville, will be held tomorrow afternoon (Friday) at 1:30 o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mr. Crone and another man were killed October 16 in an auto accident near Sonia, California, when their trucks apparently ran off a mountainside. The men were on a fishing trip. A retired master sergeant, United States Army, Mr. Crone was born November 22, 1906 at Kane, the son of James N. and Jessie Ashford Crone. Mr. Crone, son Robert, and daughter, Barbara, have been residing in Patterson, California. He is also survived by three brothers, Virgil E., Lawrence G. and James T., all of Jerseyville. His parents, two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Friends may call at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. this evening (Thursday). Military services will be conducted.

He was born in Kane Dec. 26, 1912, a son of the late James N. and Jessie Ashford Crone. His wife, Goldie Mae Lister Crone, died July 2, 1977. He is survived by one brother, Lawrence Crone of Jerseyville, nieces and nephews. His wife, parents, four brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. May 9 at Jacoby Bros. Funeral home with the Rev. Joe Srebro officiating. Graveside rites will be conducted at Oak Grove Cemetery by the American Legion. The Masonic Endowment Fund of the First Baptist Church have been designated as memorials.
CRONIN. Died 03-06-1989. Anetta M. Cronin, 92, died at 10:20 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 1989, at her residence. She operated the Ideal Cafe in Jerseyville in the 1930s and was a cook at Principia College in Elsah before retiring in 1959. She was born in Elsah Township, daughter of the late Mathias and Anna (Hauling) Bechtold. On Sept. 3, 1919, she married John M. Cronin in Beltrees, and he died March 12, 1936. Surviving are three sons, John J. Cronin of Godfrey, Robert N. Cronin of Elsah and Edgar L. Cronin of Alton; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and a brother, Joe Bechold of Beltrees. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Catherine Pat Farmer. Visitation is 5 -9 p.m. Tuesday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville with a rosary recitation at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Grafton with the Rev. Patrick Carroll as celebrant. Burial is in Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey.
CROSS. Died -02-1909. Andrew Wilason Cross, son of Hugh and Antionette Cross was born May 25, 1845. Five miles southeast of Jersey. Stayed on farm until 20 years. Took business course at Eastmans College at Poughkeepsie, NY. In 1866 entered Cross & Swallow’s bank as a clerk continuing until 1879 when he and Major W. E. Carlin established the first bank at Mt. Vernon, Ill. In 1872 sold interest at Mt. Vernon and returned to Jersey, when the president of National Bank of Jersey. Married Annie Barr in 1872. One daughter, Ida, now Mrs. Edgar M. CROSS. Died -04-1905. Antoinette Van Horne born Dec. 25, 1823 at Blenheim, Schoharie Co., NY. Only daughter of Col. Elijah and Polly Wyckoff Van Horne, who attained womanhood. Col. Van Horne, with his family consisting of Mrs. Van Horne, four sons, James, Edwin, Charles and Augustus with his daughter, started west about the 1st day of Oct. 1833. Coming by wagon road to Rotterdam, NY, thence by canal to Buffalo, there taking a steamer on Lake Erie for Cleveland, Ohio; thence again by canal to Portsmouth, Ohio and by steamer down to the mouth of the Ohio River, thence up the Mississippi to Alton. They came from there by ox team to the Scarritt place north of Godfrey where they spent the first night in Illinois. From thence they came to the Wilkins place, one mile south of Delhi, where they arrived Oct. 29 occupying about a month in the journey. The family stopped at this point until a comfortable log house was built at the Wyckoff place, two miles north of Delhi, where the family lived until early in the year 1836, when the house mentioned was removed one mile west where later Col. Van Horne built the brick house now owned by Geo. H. Van Horne, and at which place Col and Mrs. Van Horne resided the rest of their lives. Antoninette attended the school of Miss Willard at Carrollton and neighboring schools in the county. Married Hugh N. Cross on Dec. 23, 1842. He was extensive land owner in banking business until his death in Nov. 1883. Five children: Andrew Wilson, Mary N., Helen, Edward, and Leslie Cross. Helen died in infancy. Mary married Major Walter E. Carlin and died March 1880. First Presbyterian church. Died at her home in city, age 81 years. Leaves one brother, Dr. Augustus K., three sons: Andrew W., Edward, and Leslie. Three granddaughters : Eugenia Carlin Vandenburg, Alma Carlin Hamilton and Ida Cross Davis; one grandson, Hugh Ware Cross, four great granddaughters, Mary Josephine and Alma Vandenburg, Eugenia and Pauline Cross Hamilton. CROSS. Died -11-1883. Hon. H. N. Cross born Somerset Co., NJ on Dec. 9, 1817. He came to Jersey Co. in 1835 and settled on the “Darby farm” southeast of the city. He married Antionette Van Horne, daughter of Col. Elijah Van Horne in 1843. 5 children, 1 died in infancy and another, the wife of Wm. Carlin, a few years ago. He was hard worker and broke 480 acres of raw prairie. He amassed a fortune of $200,000. He started the First National Bank along with Geo. Swallow. Later took Wm. Carlin in as a partner. Of Scotch-Irish descent. Leaves a sister Mrs. Joel Cory, his widow and 3 children: Andrew, Edward, and Leslie. Presbyterian Church. Rev. Tyson.
CROSS. Died 05-02-1989. Helen M. Cross died at 5:45 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, 1989, in Sarasota, Fla. Mrs. Cross retired as a music instructor from Jersey Community Unit School District 100. She was born in Galesburg, daughter of the late Terrence and Isabelle (Stephens) McGovern. Her husband, former Illinois Lt. Gov. Hugh Cross, died in 1972. Surviving are a son, Hugh E. Cross of Carrollton; a daughter, Barbara Johnson of Columbus, Ohio; and four grandchildren. Visitation is 1 p.m. Friday until time of services at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Jerseyville. The Rev. Simon A. Simon will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the church, where Mrs. Cross had been a member.
CROSS. Died -10-1972. Hugh Ware Cross, a member of one of Illinois’ pioneer families and a former Lieutenant Governor of the State of Illinois, died at nine-forty o’clock Sunday morning at the Jersey Community Hospital following a short illness. Reverend M. Edwards Breed, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church in Jerseyville, officiated at funeral services held at two-thirty o’clock Tuesday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mr. Cross, son of the late Edward and Lulu Ware Cross and grandson of the late Hugh Nesbitt Cross and George W. Ware, was born in Jerseyville, on August 24, 1896. His ancestors were among the first group of settlers in Jersey County, coming here from Basking Ridge, New Jersey. He was educated in the Jerseyville public schools, and later attended the University of Illinois, where he was graduated with a Bachelor of Law degree in 1921. He entered the legal profession and was engaged in the practice of law in Jerseyville for a number of years and at the same time operated a farm that had been in the Cross family for more than a century. His political career, in the Republican ranks, started in 1932 when he was elected a Representative to the Illinois General Assembly and served four successive terms. He became speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives in 1939. In 1940 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Illinois and served in that office for eight years. Later he was appointed by President Harry Truman to serve on the Interstate Commerce Commission in Washington, D. C. He served for six years under Presidents Truman and Dwight Eisenhower. The last year he was chairman for the Commission. Mr. Cross was chairman of the Illinois War Council during World War II, a member of the Presbyterian Church, American Legion, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, 32nd Degree Mason, Ainad Temple of East St. Louis, Ancient Scottish Rite of Chicago, Grand Lodge of A. F. and A. M., Jesters, Knight Templars, Phi Delta Phi law fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega social fraternity, Burning Tree Golf Club, Washington, D. C., and Bird Key Yacht Club of Sarasota, Florida. For the past several years, Mr. Cross and his wife, the former Helen McGovern Cross, have divided their time between their home in Jerseyville and in Sarasota, Florida. Surviving Mr. Cross in addition to his wife are a son, Hugh Edward Cross of Carrollton; one daughter, Mrs. C. Lee (Barbara)Johnson of Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and four grandchildren, Hugh Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Cross, and Craig and Eric Cross Johnson.

Born May 22, 1857 on the Cross homestead at 2 1/2 miles north of Jerseyville which he owned. He married Anna Hobson at Kane, Ill. on Dec. 30, 1884. She died Nov. 25, 1907. Married Miss Mamie Hobson Rieckes on Oct. 4, 1910 at Kansas City. Leaves wife, one brother, Edward of Jerseyville, three nieces, Mrs. Eugenia Vandenburg of Peoria, Ill., Mrs. Alma Hamilton of Jerseyville and Mrs. Ida Cross Davis of Los Angeles. One nephew, Hugh Cross, of Jerseyville. Son of the pioneer, Hugh Cross a man of honesty and integrity who merited the highest esteem of all who made his acquaintance..
CROSS. Died 08-02-1925. Mrs. Lulu Ware Cross died at Feb. 8 at her home on N. State St. Born Nov. 11, 1863, the daughter of George W. Ware and the late Theodosia Beardslee Ware. She attended school at Maplewood, Pittsfield, Mass. She married Edward Cross on Jan. 21, 1891. One son, Hugh Ware Cross. Presbyterian church. Leaves husband, Edward, son, Hugh, her father, George W. CROTCHETT. Arnold B. Crotchett, 78, died at 11:55 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, 1987, at Christian Hospital Northeast in St. Louis County. A farmer, he was born in Illinois, son of the late Perry and Sophia (Scoggins) Crotchett. He married the former Mabel Evelyn Tucker on June 30, 1927, in Jacksonville. She resides in Kane. Also surviving, are two daughters, Doris Darr of Kane and Sandra Goshorn of Jerseyville; three sons, Raymond Crotchett of Clearwater, Fla., Robert Crotchett of Jerseyville and Arnie Crotchett Jr. of Alton; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Annas Hyde of Kane, Dimple Charlton of Jerseyville and Hazel Krause of Shipman and three brothers, James Crotchett of Fieldon and Lawrence Crotchett of Jerseyville. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Services will be at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Mark Eter officiating. Burial was in Kane Cemetery. His death occurred at 10:55 a.m. on Nov. 29 at Jersey Community Hospital. A farm laborer and World War II veteran, he was born on June 5, 1919 in Greene County, a son of Perry and Sophia Scoggins Crotchett. His survivors are two sons, Milton T. Crotchett of Delhi and Austin Eugene Crotchett of Jerseyville; one daughter, Mrs. Joan Jenal Crotchett of Paducah, KY.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers, Arnold Crotchett of Jerseyville, Thomas of Fieldon, and James and Lawrence Crotchett of Kane; three sisters, and Mrs. Fred (Hazel) Krause of Shipman, Mrs. Allen (Dimple) Charlton of Jerseyville and Mrs. Henry (Anice) Hyde of Kane. CROTCHETT. Died 21-05-1945. Perry Lee Crotchett, a farmer of the Kane vicinity, died Monday evening, May 21 at 6:35 at his home near Kane. He had been ill for some time. Mr. Crotchett was the son of the late Amos and Johanna Giberson Crotchett and was born in Greene County on December 5, 1873. Mr. Crotchett was engaged in farming for fifty-five years. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Sophia Scoggins Crotchett of Kane, six sons, Ross, James, Arnold and Lawrence Crotchett of Kane, Thomas Crotchett of Carrollton and Melvin Crotchett of the U.S. Army stationed in Germany and three daughters, Mrs. Annas Hyde of Carrollton, Miss Ethel Crotchett of Jerseyville and Mrs. Hazel Krause of SHipman. He also leaves twenty-six grandchildren; one brother Jake Crotchett of Eldred and one half-brother, George Hargett of Springfield. One grandson Louis Crotchett is serving in the U.S. Navy. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, May 23 at 2:30 p.m. at the Baptist Church in Kane. Rev. Mason Smith officiated at the rites and interment was in the Kane cemetery.
CROTCHETT. Died 10-03-1973. Final services for Richard Dale Crotchett, 35, of Jerseyville were held Tuesday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. Everett Chambers officiating. Interment was in Kane Cemetery. His death occurred March 10 at St. Luke’s Hospital, St. Louis. Mr. Crotchett suffered a cerebral hemorrhage at his home March 1 while eating supper and was moved to Alton Memorial hospital, and later to St. Luke’s Hospital. He was born October 26, 1937 in Greene County the son of Arnold and Mabel Tucker Crotchett. Mr. Crotchett was a welding fabricator at Federal Steel. His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Patricia Ballard Crotchett; one son, Michael, 7, and daughter, Amy, 4; his father, Arnold Crotchett of Jerseyville; mother Mabel Crotchett of Kane; three brothers, Raymond Eugene of White Hall, Arnold, Jr., and Robert of Jerseyville; and two sisters, Mrs. Doris Darr of Kane and Mrs. Sandra Goshorn of Jerseyville. CROW. Died 16-05-1980. The funeral of Ellen J. Crow, 88 of Jerseyville was held Monday afternoon at Gubser funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Scmidgall officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. She died at 11:20 a.m. May 16 at Greenwood Manor Nursing Home where she had resided five years. She was born in Woodville Township, Green County March7, 1892 a daughter of Thomas and Matilda Hohnisee Holmes. Her husband, Henry Crow, died July 15, 1973. Her survivors are three daughters , Ada Mattis and Mavis Brooks of Jerseyville, Vivian True, Edwardsville; one son, Harold Crow of Jerseyville; seven grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, one son, two brothers, three sisters, a half brother and a grandson. The Bethany Baptist Church has been designated as a memorial.
CROW. Died -07-1973. Funeral services were held at the Gubser Funeral Home at one o’clock Wednesday afternoon for Henry W. Crow of Jerseyville, with Rev. L. E. Hutchinson officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation was held at the Funeral Home after four o’clock Tuesday afternoon. For the past three years, Mr. Crow had resided at the Tower View Nursing Home in Carrollton. CROXFORD. Died 10-04-1972. Harold P. Croxford of Grafton, whose health has been impaired since last November, died at two-five o’clock Monday morning, April 10, at St. Anthony Hospital in Alton. Visitation was held at Gubser Funeral Home where services were held at one-thirty o’clock Wednesday, April 12, with Reverend Eugene Rueweler of St. Louis and Reverend Harry Bultema of Alton officiating. Burial was in Valhalla Cemetery. Mr. Croxford, a farmer, was born in Elsah Township, March 13, 1902, and his age at the time of death was seventy years and twenty-seven days. His parents were John and Kittie Pinney Croxford. His survivors are his wife, Alice; one son, Wayne Croxford of Godfrey; two brothers, Stanley of Dow and Verne of Pomona, California; one sister, Mrs. Everett Cornelius of Pea Ridge, Arkansas; and two grandchildren.
CROXFORD. Died 20-12-1971. Harvey W. Croxford, a resident of Dow, died unexpectedly after he and Mrs. Corxford had returned to their home Monday evening around eight-thirty o’clock. Surviving Mr. Croxford are his wife, Irma; three sons, Kenneth of Dow, Edward of Godfrey, and Rodney of East Alton; one daughter, Mrs. Melvin Wieneke of Golden Eagle; three brothers, Harold of Grafton, Stanley of Dow, and Verne of Pomona, California; one sister, Mrs. Everett Cormelius of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, and seven grandchildren. The family has designated the Heart Association as a memorial.

CROXFORD. Died 23-01-1981. Services for Kenneth M. Croxford, 53, a farmer, of R.1 Dow, were conducted Sunday afternoon at the United Methodist Church, Jerseyville, by the Rev. R. E. George. Burial was in Elsah Cemetery. He died at 12:05 p.m. Jan. 23 at his residence from an apparent heart attack. He was born March 2, 1927 in Elsah township, a son of Harvey and Marie Fessler Grady Croxford. His survivors are his wife, the former Betty Noble; mother, Marie Grady, Alton; step-mother, Irma Croxford, Dow; and son Dennis of Jerseyville; two grandchildren; two half brothers and two half sister.

Final rites for Mrs. Kitty Croxford, long time resident of the Elsah vicinity, were held Wednesday afternoon, January 14, at one o’clock at the Gubser Funeral Home and were conducted by Rev. Wilbur Reinardt of Alton assisted by Gene Croxford of Grand Rapids, Michigan, grandson of the decedent. Burial was in the Elsah Cemetery. Visitation hours were at the funeral Home. The death of Mrs. Croxford occurred Sunday, January 11, at 12:05 a.m., at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Alton where she had been a patient about a month. She was a daughter of the late Edward N. and Catherine Hansell Pinney and was born November 5, 1880 at Elsah. Mrs. Croxford marked her 89th birthday last November. She was the widow of John A. Croxford. Survivors are four sons, Harold of Grafton, Harvey and Stanley of Dow and Verne of Pamona, Calif., one daughter Mrs. Everett Cornelius of Alton; nine grandchildren; and eleven great- grandchildren.
CROXFORD. Stanley Croxford, 77, died at 3:46 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9, 1988, at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville, following a lengthy illness. Born in Elsah, the lifelong farmer was the son of the late John and Kitty (Pinney) Croxford. On Nov. 10, 1935, in St. Charles, Mo., he married the former Ethel Slaten, and she survives. Also surviving are a son, Hubert Croxford of Elsah; three grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a sister, Mary Cornelius of Pea Ridge, Ark. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold, Harvey and ern Croxford; and a sister Lila Mott. Visitation is 4-9 p.m. today at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday. The Rev. Steve Perrin will officiate. Burial will be in Elsah Cemetery. memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
CROXFORD. Died 09-08-1973. Vern Croxford, 2327 Laurel Avenue, Pomona, Calif., born and reared in Jersey County, incurred fatal injuries on construction work August 9 in Morenci, Arizona. Reports received here were to the effect that the former Dow resident had fallen from a 35 ft. scaffolding. The body was brought to the Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville where visitation was held at four o’clock Sunday. Funeral services were held at the Funeral Home Monday at one o’clock by Reverend Conklin of Pomona who accompanied the Croxford family to Jerseyville. Burial was in Elsah Cemetery. Mr. Croxford was the son of the late John and Kittie Pinney Croxford, and was born June 4, 1915. His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Olivia Croxford; two sons, Gary and Gene and one daughter, Candice, all of Pomona; two grandchildren; a brother, Stanley Croxford of Dow, and a sister, Mrs. Everett (Mary) Cornelius of Pea Ridge, Arkansas.

Croxford was a machinist in the mold shop at Owens Illinois Glass Co. Born Nov. 27, 1932 in Alton, he was a son of Alice Gerson Croxford of Grafton and the late Harold Croxford. He married the former Donna Gunther July 17, 1966 at Dow. His survivors are his wife; one daughter, Dara, and two sons, Terry and Michael, all at home. CRULL. Died -09-1983. Alice Crull, 55, of Route 3 and formerly of Grafton, died at 2:55p.m. Wednesday at DePaul Health Center. She was a baker at Pere Marquette Lodge in Grafton and a member of Local #243 Restaurant and Bartenders Union. She was a union stewardess on the executive board. She was born in Alton, daughter of the late George and Freda (Gibbs) McGiffin. Surviving are three sons, Laverne Jr., of Princeton, Richard of Rafton and Kenneth of Jerseyville; four daughters, Marilyn Crull of Alton, Karen Sue Skipper of Glade Water, Texas, Patricia Croxford and Betty Nairn, both of Jerseyville; 13 grandchildren, and a sister, Mary Rodgers of Jerseyville. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 a.m. Saturday to the Assembly of God Church in Jerseyville and will lie in state until service time at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Wayne Pendelton officiating. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery. Jersey County Health Department’s Visiting Nurses Program has been named as a memorial.
Charles CRULL born at Rosedale, Ill., Oct. 11th, 1848, departed this life September 26th, 1921, aged 72 years, 11 months and 15 days. He was united in marriage to Rhoda Smith June 26th, 1870. To this union ten children were born, Mary, Charles, Isabella, Plowman, Jasper, Orena, Arthur, Ella, Floy and Mark. Charles, Isabella and Mark died in infancy. Orena LOWE passed away Aug. 28, 1920. He leaves Mrs. Rhoda Crull, his wife, Mrs. Mary Lowe of Jerseyville, Plowman, Jasper and Mrs. Ella Groppel of Rosedale, Arthur of Saskatchewan, Canada and Mrs. Floy Schallenberg of Godfrey, one brother James and a host of nephews, nieces and grand children, behind to mourn his sacred memory. He was stricken while in Dr. Wiles office at Jerseyville with his daughter, Ella Groppel and husband by his side, and passed away in a very few seconds. Everything was done that could be for him but his work here on earth being done God in his merciful love called him to a higher home. He became a Christian at an early age and was a faithful worker in the church until the end. He was a loving husband and father, loved by one and all, honest and upright and will be greatly missed by his many friends and all whom he knew. CRULL. Died -04-1968. Daruis E. Crull, 85, a native of Jersey County, died unexpectedly last Wednesday afternoon at his home, 1816 Washington Avenue, Alton. He had suffered from a heart condition for several years, but had continued active. Final rites were held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock in Marks Mortuary in Wood River with Rev. M. L. Mace, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Wood River, officiating. Interment was in Valhalla Memorial Park. Masonic services were held Friday evening with Wood River Lodge 1062, AF & AM officiating. Mr. Crull was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Crull and was born in Jersey County, August 5, 1882. He resided in the county until 1924 when he moved to East Alton. For the past eighteen years he had been a resident of Alton. Prior to his retirement in 1947, Mr. Crull had been employed for twenty years by Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation.
CRULL. Died 02-09-1953. Mrs. Dorothy Mae Crull, 25, wife of Warren L. Crull of Rosedale, died Wednesday evening, September 2, at six-fifty-five o’clock at her home in Rosedale Township following a several days illness. Mrs. Crull was the daughter of Jesse and Hazel Daniels Margeson of Kane and was born in Greene County on February 27, 1928. Her age at the time of death was twenty-five years, six months and five days. Surviving they young mother in addition to her husband are three sons, Marvin Leon, Allen Leonard and Ezra Bruce Crull of Rosedale; her parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Jesse Margeson of Kane; two brothers, Marvin Margeson of Kane and Darrell Margeson of the U. S. Army, San Francisco, Calif.; and four sister, Mrs. Leo Abbott, Misses Margaret Hazel, Jo Ann and Joan Margeson of Kane. Funeral services will be held at the Rosedale Methodist Church Saturday afternoon, September 5, at two o’clock. Interment will be in the Rosedale Cemetery. He had been in failing heath for some months and on Thursday suffered a heart attack which resulted in his death. The decedent was a son of the late James and Elizabeth Smith Crull and was born in Jersey County on March 23, 1878. His age at the time of death was seventy-seven years, eight months and twenty-nine days. CRULL. Hilda M. Crull, 79, of Wood River, died at 2:57 p.m. Monday, Dec.7, 1987, unexpectedly at her residence. Born in Tyme, she was a daughter of the late Marvin Lester and Cora Opal (Johnson) Donohoo. She married Lester W. Crull June 27, 1931, in St. Charles, Mo., and he died May 19, 1977. Surviving are two daughters, Jane A. Cerbie of Godfrey and Judy Daubenspeck of East Alton; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and four step grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Marks Mortuary in Wood River, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. A verdict of homicide was returned by a coroner’s Jury of Madison Co. in Alton investigating the death of James Crull, 40 year old Rosedale resident who died in St. Josephs Hospital in Alton on Oct. 17, for treatment of wounds purportedly sustained in an altercation near a tavern west of Grafton.
CRULL. Died 09-01-1953. James Bird Crull, a former resident of Jersey County, died Friday, January 9, at two fifteen o’clock at his home in Quincy where he had resided the past twenty years. He had been in ill health for some time. Mr. Crull, a retired druggist was a veteran of the Spanish American War. He was a son of the late James and Elizabeth Smith Crull and was born in Jersey County on April 22, 1875. His age at the time of death was seventy-seven years, eight months, and seventeen days. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Clara Belle Crull of Quincy, six daughters, Mrs. Esther Stanley of Jerseyville, Mrs. Mina Daubman, Mrs. Marie Spatz, Mrs. Helen Hermann and Mrs. Pauline Seymour of Alton and Miss Margaret Crull of Orlando, Florida; one son, Roy Crull of Alton, and one step-son, Pierae Heffington of Louisville, Kentucky. He also leaves eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two brothers, Ezra Crull of Rosedale and D. E. Crull of St. Petersburg, Florida, and two sister, Mrs. Martin Tuetken of Jerseyville and Mrs. E. J. Davies of San Diego, California. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers, Funeral Home Sunday afternoon, January 11, at two-thirty o’clock. Rev. M. Edwards Breed, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, officiated and burial was in Scenic Hill Cemetery were in charge of Whalen Hill Post, American Legion of Grafton.

Jasper Crull, a Jersey County farmer, died at four-thirty o’clock p.m. Sunday, July 8 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Herbert Dabbs in the Grafton vicinity where he had been for the past three weeks. Mr. Crull had been ill for sometime and prior to coming to the Dabbs home and been living with another daughter, Mrs. George Teasley in Wood River. The deceased was a son of the late Charles and Rhoda Smith Crull and was born in Rosedale, November 6, 1879. His age at the time of death was seventy-one years, eight months and two days. Mr. Crull is survived by four sons, Charles of East Alton, Woodrow of Riverside, California, Dwight of Houston, Texas, and Wilbur of Gary, Indiana; three daughters, Mrs. Marvin Henry of Calumet City, Mrs. Herbert Dabbs of Grafton and Mrs. George Teasley of Wood River; three sister, Mrs. Henry Rowell of Jerseyville, Mrs. Ella Groppel of Fieldon and Mrs. Ed Schallenberg of Birghton and two brothers, P. L. Crull of Grafton and Arthur Crull of British Columbia. Funeral services were held from the Gubser Funeral Home to the Rosedale Methodist Church Wednesday, July 11, at two o’clock, daylight savings time. The Reverend M. W. Wilson of East Alton officiated and interment was in the Rosedale Cemetery.
CRULL. Died 27-10-1939. Mrs. Jasper Crull, well known resident of the Otterville vicinity, died at her home Friday morning, October 27 at 6 o’clock a.m. at the age of 51 years. The deceased was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jason Corvin, and was born in Jersey County, July 17, 1888. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Crull is survived by four sons, Charles and Woodrow of Alton, Dwight and William Crull of the Otterville locality; three daughters, Mrs. Herbert Dabbs of Grafton, Mrs. Marvin Henry of Harmon Indiana, and Miss June Crull who resides at home. Funeral services were held at the Rosedale Church, Sunday, October 29 at 2 o’clock. Rev. Raymond Lyall and Rev. Dale Harmon officiated and interment was in the Rosedale Cemetery.

Mrs. Leola Crull of Rosedale, widow of Ezra Crull died Sunday afternoon, October 30, at 2:30 o’clock at the Jersey Community Hospital where she had been a patient for six days. Mrs. Crull had been in failing health for sometime and had been hospitalized on previous occasions. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon, November 1, at two o’clock. Rev. Jack D. Tharp of East St. Louis, pastor of the Rosedale Methodist Church, conducted the rites and interment was in the Rosedale Cemetery. Mrs. Crull was a daughter of the late Samuel and Catherine Simpson Myers and was born in Jersey County on September 14, 1886. Her age at the time of death was seventy-years, one months and sixteen days. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Thomas Erwin of Jerseyville, Mrs. Mildred Balster of Rosedale, Mrs. Wesley Hunter of East St. Louis, and Mrs. Cecil Plummer of Fieldon, three sons, Robert Crull of Fieldon, and Paul and Warren L. Crull of Livingston, twenty-seven grandchildren and one brother, Luther Myers of Dow. Mrs. Crull was preceded in death by her husband, two daughters and one son, James.

Funeral services were held in Alton yesterday afternoon for Mrs. Margaret Crull, aged 77 years, who died there on Sunday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lottie Coleman. The deceased was a former resident of this county but had been making her home in Alton for the past fifteen years.

Reverend Raymond Lyles of St. Louis officiated at the funeral services which were held at the Funeral Home at two o’clock on Tuesday afternoon. Burial was in the Otterville Cemetery. Miss Crull, a daughter of the late Bird and Mary Flautt Crull, was born in St. Louis, February 18, 1915, and her age at the time of death was forty-six years, eight months and ten days. Surviving the decedent are two aunts, Miss Hazel Flautt and Mrs. Martin Tuetken of Jerseyville; two uncles, James Flautt of Oak Park, and John Flautt of Jerseyville; five half-sisters, Mrs. Wiliam Daubman, Mrs. Emmett Spatz, Mrs. Alvin Hermann and Mrs. Wayne Seymore of Alton and Mrs. Charles Stanley of Jerseyville, and one half-brother, Roy Crull, of Alton.

CRULL. Former Wood River resident Woodrow Crull, 75, died Wednesday, March 8, 1989, at home, after a lengthy illness. Crull had been employed by Olin Corp. in East Alton. Born in Jersey County, he was the son of the late Jasper and Emma Crull. Surviving are his wife; three stepdaughters; two sisters, Imogene Dabbs of Grafton and June Teasley of Wood River; and two brothers, Dwight Crull of Calumet City and Wilbur Crull of Chino, Calif. Burial was in Riverside.
CRULL. Died 03-04-1983. Services for Paul Everett Crull, 61, of R. 1 Fieldon were conducted at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home by the Rev. John Vidakovich with burial in Rosedale Cemetery. He died at 10:15 a.m. April 3 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Clayton, Mo. The World War II veteran was born in Rosedale Township Dec. 21, 1921, son of Ezra L. and Leola Myers Crull and had worked in maintenance at Olin Corp. His survivors are his wife, the former Nettie Green; one son Paul of Alton, three grandchildren; a brother, Robert Crull of Fieldon; two sisters, Elma Pummil of Alton and Mildred Balster, Springfield.
CRULL. Robert S. Crull, 73, died at 12:31 a.m. Sunday, May 8, 1994, at St. Louis University Medical Center. He retired in 1981 after 30 years as a steelworker at Laclede Steel Co. in Alton. A U. S. Navy World War II veteran, he was a member of the Jerseyville Veterans of Foreign Wars and Jerseyville American Legion and a lifetime member of United Steelworkers Local 3643. Born May 23, 1920, in Rosedale, he was the son of the late Ezra L. and Leola (Myers) Crull. He married the former Mildred “Mickey” Godsey on July 31, 1945, in Hardin. She survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Ann Nash of Fosterburg, Roberta Godar of Jerseyville and Sandra Adams of Twentynine Palms, Calif., a son Tom Crull of Fosterburg; and six granddaughters, Lisa, Pam, Cindy, Amy, Cassie, and Anna. CRULL. Died 04-07-1988. Roy Joseph Crull, 81, of Alton, died at 6:20 p.m. Monday, July 4,1988, at his residence, following a brief illness. Crull had been a machinist tool and worked for Sterling Aluminum Corp. in St. Louis 33 years. He worked with Machinist Local 660 until retiring July 19, 1970. Born in Grafton, he was the son of the late Bird and Katie (rainey) Crull. On June 29, 1940, he married the former Mildred Louise Moore in Hartford, and she survives. Also surviving are a son Charles Roy Crull of Fenton, Mo.; a grandson; four step-grandchildren; and five sister, Coleen Seymour, Helen Hermann Foster and Nina Daybman, all of Godfrey, Esther Stanley of Jerseyville and Marie Tuetken of Alton. A brother, Charles Crull, preceded him in death. Crull was a longtime member of the Alton Eagle’s Lodge. Visitation at Gent Funeral Home in Alton, where rites will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. by Grafton Full Moon Lodge 341 AF & AM. Funeral services will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The Rev. Kenneth Edelman will officiate. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association of Elm Street Presbyterian Church.
CRULL. Died -11-1909. Sarah Ann Hughes born near Lucasville, Scioto Co, Ohio, Nov. 24, 1822. Moved to Illinois in 1837 and March 23, 1845 married John Crull. Children are: Mrs. Mary Darlington, James and Chas. Crull. Husband died 1851. Married John Scott. They had two daughter and one son. These children and Mr. Scott have preceded her. For more than 30 years she has been in home of daughter Mrs. Darlington. Baptist faith. Funeral from Rosedale ME church. Rev. I. D. Crawford. Pallbearers were grandsons: Bird, Darius and Ezra, children of James Crull. Plowman, Jasper and Arthur sons of Chas Crull. Jasper being in Washington, his place was filled by Chas. Lowe, grandson by marriage. “The Tears of the Sowers and the songs of the Reaper will Mingle together in Joy by-and-by.” The brilliant foliage of the surrounding forest so made by the autumnal change, seemed a fitting time for one of her age to “wrap the drapery of her couch about her and lie down to peaceful sleep.”

He died unexpectedly at 10:59 p.m. March 18 at Jersey Community Hospital from an apparent heart attack. Crull was a retired crane operator at Laclede Steel. He was born March 16, 1927 in Rosedale, a son of Ezra and Leola Myers Crull. His first wife, Dorothy Margeson, died Sept. 2, 1953. He married the former Patsy Brown March 27, 1954 in Edwardsville. He was a World War II veteran. His survivors include his wife; five sons, Marvin of Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., Alan, Jacksonville, Bruce, Scott Air Force Base, Randall, Jerseyville and David, Piasa; three daughters, Cathy West, Piasa, Joann West, Carrollton, Rita Baumgartner, Jerseyville; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Robert of Fieldon and Paul of Rosedale; three sisters, Mildred Balster of Springfield, Dorothy Hunter of East St. Louis and Alma Pummel of Alton.
CRULL. Died 08-03-1989. Former Wood River resident Woodrow Crull, 75, died Wednesday, March 8, 1989, at home, after a lengthy illness. Crull had been employed by Olin Corp. in East Alton. Born in Jersey County, he was the son of the late Jasper and Emma Crull. Surviving are his wife; three stepdaughters; two sisters, Imogene Dabbs of Grafton and June Teasley of Wood River; and two brothers, Dwight Crull of Calumet City and Wilbur Crull of Chino, Calif. CRUTCHLEY. Died 14-02-1975. Final services for Emmett L. Crutchley, 79, of 208 Sherman St., Jerseyville and formerly of Hartford, were conducted Monday afternoon, Feb. 17, from the Smith Funeral Home in Wood River. His death occurred on Feb. 14 at Jersey Community Hospital. The Rev. R. E. George, pastor of the First Methodist Church in Jerseyville officiated. Burial was in the Wanda Cemetery, South Roxana. Mr. Crutchley was employed as a pipefitter at Shell Oil Co. for 27 years until he retired in 1955. His survivors include his widow, the former Hazel Spray; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Borth and Mrs. Laverna Gan, both of Hartford; two sons, James of Bement and Ralph of Roxana; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Arthur of Denver, Colo; a sister, Mrs. Essie Whalen of Hartford; and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Imogene Slover of Jerseyville. His first wife, Victoria, died in 1955.
CRUTCHLEY. Died 23-09-1984. Hazel E. Creech Crutchley, 86, of Jerseyville died at 3:24 p.m. Sept. 23 at Jersey Community Hospital. She was born July 17, 1898 in Frankfort, Ind. to Sant and Mary Spray. Her first husband, Elmer R. Creech, died Sept. 25, 1964. She later married Emmett Crutchley who died Feb. 14, 1975. She is survived by one daughter, Imogene Slover of Jerseyville; two stepsons, Ralph and James Crutchley; and two step daughters, Dorothy June Borth and Laverna Gan, all of Hartford; three grandchildren and six great grandchildren; a brother, Carl Spray of New Albany, Ind. and a sister, Beulah Michaels of Phoenix, Ariz. Services were conducted Wednesday at Gubser Funeral Home by the Rev. R. E. George. The body was taken to the Summers Funeral Home in Olney for visitation Thursday. Graveside rites were conducted in Noble Cemetery in Noble with the Rev. Kenneth Bissey officiating. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Jerseyville where she was a member.

CUELLAR. Died 21-04-1979. Eva McGiffen Cuellar, 75, of R. 2, Collinsville, formerly of Dow, died at 11:50 a.m. April 21 at the Oliver C. Anderson Hospital at Maryville. Born April 19, 1904 in Tennessee, she was a daughter of Robert and Alice Self McGiffen. Her husband, John Cuellar, died in 1960. Her survivors are two sons, John Lane of Dow and Jospeh of Jacksonville, Fla.; five daughters, Elvira Braude and Flora Digirolamo of Collinsville, Irene Gill of Jerseyville, Jaunite Dugan of Brighton, Mary Davis of St. Louis, 16 grandchildren; five great grandchildren. One brother, Lonnie McGiffen of Alton; three sister, Ruth Heitzman, East Alton, Bobbie Santa Crutz, Kenosha, Wis., and Athalene Goheen of Dow. Four brothers and a sister preceded her in death. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gent Funeral Home, Alton by the Rev. Leleand Lochhass. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey. CUMMINGS. Died -04-1972. Mrs. Birdie Cummings of Seattle, Washington, who was a resident of Jersey County before moving West in the mid-fifties, died at a Seattle hospital, Friday evening, ten days after suffering a stroke. Funeral services and burial were held in Seattle, Monday morning at nine-thirty o’clock. Mrs. Cummings, a daughter of the late William and Mary Henson Sinclair, would have been 85 years old on the 24th of April. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. George Eckhoff and Miss Jean Cummings of Seattle, two sons, and daughter, and seven brothers and sisters.

Born in Greene County, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary E. Price Walter. She married Ornan Cummings on Oct. 25, 1911. He died in 1965. CUMMINGS. Died 07-05-1991. Dallis M. Cummings, 57, died at 6:45 a.m. Sunday, May 5, 1991 at St. Clare’s Hospital in Alton, after a lengthy illness. She was a bookkeeper and secretary for the Jersey County Farm Bureau for six years, and was a member of the Jersey County Farm Bureau. Born in Jerseyville on April 27, 1934, she was a daughter of Harold and Erma Charlton Cravens of Modesto. On Feb. 10, 1951, in Jerseyville, she married Donald L. Cummings. He died on Feb. 7, 1983. In addition to her parents, surviving are two sons, Dan Cummings of Jerseyville and Dudley Cummings of Collinsville, Texas; two daughters, Deanna Johnson and Donna Kay Cummings, both of Jerseyville; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers, Harold “Hal” Cravens of Oak Park and Dave Cravens of Arizona. Preceding her in death were a sister, Kay Little, and an infant brother. Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Guber Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Her husband, Charles, preceded her in death. Her survivors are one son, Ira L. Cummings of Fieldon; three daughters, Mrs. Emma Lane of Fieldon, Mrs. Edith O’Neal of Alton and Mrs. Sturat (Alta) Yocom of Jerseyville; five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; three brothers, Leslie Gunterman of Jerseyville, Herb Gunterman of Otterville and Raymond Gunterman of Hardin; and two sisters, Mrs. Gussie Cope and Mrs. Rachel McKinney, both of Jerseyville. CUMMINGS. Died 21-10-1985. Elmer E. Cummings, 82, of Jerseyville, died Oct. 21 at Jersey Community Hospital. He was born Jan. 30, 1903, in Jersey County to the late John Cummings and Zada Griffin. He married Verna Burrows on Aug. 2, 1924, in Alton. He was a carpenter. He was a member of Local No. 377 in Granite City, First Baptist Church in Jerseyville and Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star, both in Jerseyville. Survivors include his wife, Verna of Jerseyville; daughters Betty King of Jerseyville and Lois Remshardt of St. louis; sister Alice Lyles of Jerseyville; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, three brothers, two sisters and a grandchild. Visitation and Masonic services were Oct. 22 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. CUMMINGS. Died 26-02-1974. Howard H. Cummings, son of the late Tomas and Eva Sinclair Cummings, died at 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 26 in Washington, D. C. after a several months illness. He was born July 26, 1900 and received his education in the Jerseyville schools and University of Illinois where he received his master degree. Cummings taught in the Jerseyville and Clayton, Mo., school systems before entering army service from which he retired as a major in 1946. He later joined HEW in Washington, D. C., where he worked in the Department of Education until his retirement in 1970. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Snow Willborn Cummings; two daughters, Mrs. William (Nancy Cummings) Connor, Mrs. Donald (Joyce Cummings) Dippold, seven grandchildren, all of the St. Louis area; four stepchildren of Washington, D. C.; and three sisters, Mrs. H. L. (Blanche) Wiseman of Dalton, Mass., Mrs. Howard (Hilda) Nicol of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Mrs. Edward(Virginia) Raody of Jerseyville.

CUMMINGS. Died 04-01-1992. John Raymond Cummings, 61, died at 10:35 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 1992, at Jersey Community Hospital, Jerseyville. A Korean War U. S. Army veteran, he was employed as a forklift operator at a block plant in Columbus, Ohio. Born Sept. 24, 1930, in Jersey County, he was the son of Lorene (Calhoun) Cummings of Jerseyville, and the late Raymond Cummings. Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Russell of Jerseyville; four sisters, Alberta Yound, Zada Cummings and Claudia Jones, all of Jerseyville, and Wanda Larkin of Monroe, Mich. A sister, Ethel Eileen Cummings, preceded him in death. The body was cremated. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Jacoby-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements.
CUMMINGS. Died 23-08-1943. John S. Cummings, prominent of Jersey County died suddenly at 8 p.m. Monday night, August 23 at his home southwest of Jerseyville. An inquest was conducted and it was ascertained that death resulted from coronary thrombosis. He was the son of the later Peter and Bridget Talty Cummings, and was born in Jersey County, November 21, 1880. He had been engaged in farming for 45 years. Mr. Cummings is survived by his wife, Mrs. Birdie Sinclair Cummings; three daughter, Mrs. Homer Hayes of Wood River, Mrs. George Eckhoff of Sterling, and Miss Jean Cummings of Jerseyville; two sons, Raymond Cummings of Wood River, and Corporal John S. Cummings of the U. S.Army stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., four grandchildren.; Two brothers, Thomas Cummings and Owen Cummings of Jerseyville; four sister, Mrs. Lloyd Sinclair, Jerseyville, his twin Mrs. George Radcliff of Havana, Mrs. Chas. Moore of Springfield, and Mrs. Elizabeth Welker of Ludlow, Missouri; his step mother Mrs. Anna Cummings, of Jerseyville; two half-brothers, Joseph and Leo Cummings of Jerseyville; two half-sister, Mrs. Henry Lifets of Jerseyville, and Mrs. Joseph Hurley of Hardin. Cummings, veteran of World War II, was fatally injured late Wednesday afternoon, January 8, when he was caught beneath a tractor on the farm of his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sinclair, where he was working. Mr. Cummings was the son of Mrs. Birdie Sinclair Cummings and the late John S. Cummings, Sr. of Jerseyville. He was born in Jersey County August 30, 1920. The deceased is survived by his mother, Mrs. Birdie Cummings, one son, Michael Cummings; three sisters, Mrs. Frances Hayes of Roxana, Mrs. Eileen Eckhoff of Seattle, Wash. and Miss Jean Cummings of Jerseyville and one brother, R. CUMMINGS. Died 11-11-1954. John Thomas Cummings of Jerseyville died at his home 717 Hickory Street at three-fifty o’clock Thursday morning, November 11. Although he had not been feeling well his death was unexpected. Mr. Cummings was a son of the late William and Sarah Nelson Cummings, and was born in Greene County, May 4, 1877. His age at the time of death was seventy-seven years, six months, and seven days. The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Zada Cummings; three sons, Elmer and Truman Cummings of Jerseyville and Jasper Cummings of Harrison, Indiana; two daughters, Mrs. Alice Lyles and Mrs. Effie Pummill of Jerseyville; two brothers, Jacob Cummings of Alton and William Cummings of Waterloo, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren and nine grat grandchildren. One son, Raymond and two daughters, Mrs. Raymond Bates and Lucille Cummings preceded him in death. CUMMINGS. Died -05-1975. Leo Eugene “Kaiser” Cummings, 63, of Jerseyville, died at 11:05 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He was a foreman of the truck drivers at Shell Oil Co. Surviving are his widow, the former Dorothy Gary of Jerseyville; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Joanne) Davis of Wood River and Miss Denise Cummings of Alton; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; and two sister, Mrs. Agnes Liffets of Jerseyville and Mrs. Joseph Hurley of Hardin. He was active in community affairs and held posts in numerous Jerseyville lodges and clubs. CUMMINGS. Died -05-1889. Mrs. Mary Cummings died at home in Mississippi Township. 84 years. Maiden name was Carroll, daughter of John and Mary Carroll. Married Thomas Cummings Sept. 24, 1824. He died Nov. 21, 1856. Funeral from St. Francis Church. Cummings family have always resided on land entered from the government in 1819.
CUMMINGS. Died 10-03-1898. Oldest daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann Cummings, was born on her father’s homestead four miles south of Jerseyville, Ill. Sept. 10, 1828. Her father was born in the Block House on old fort at Waterloo, Ill., March 4, 1800, and is said to have been the first white child born in Monroe County. Her grandfather Cummings was born in Connecticut when it was a colony. His parents were Scotch people. He was in the Revolutionary war, and fought under Gen. Wayne. He was also a soldier in the war against the Miami Indians in1790, and witnesses the defeat of Gen St. Clair by Little Turtle. The subject of the sketch spent all her life in Jersey county and witnessed the developments of the county from the old fashioned stage coach to the lightening express, both of which passed in front of her father’s dooryard. Her father kept a country tavern where drovers were entertained on the way from Jacksonville to Alton with their stock and produce. She remembered the great cattle king, Jacoby Strawn, for whom she had helped prepare many a meal by the old fireplace and oven. She lived on the old homestead till December 15, 1868, when she became the wife of Edwin Trabue, her now bereaved husband. Her married relations were of the happiest character. Not being the mother of any children she readily adopted the motherless children of her husband, and none would have known that they were not her own. Her nephews and nieces were always affectionately cherished, and their well being was always in her heart. They mourn her moss as a mother. She united with the M. E. church at Paradise, in Medora Circuit, the first Sunday in February, 1894. Up to September 1894, the circuit had rented a house for their pastor, which frequently worked great inconvenience to him. She said it was not right to have a minister moving from house to house at the will of a landlord, so she bought a home for the pastor to live in, and was always careful to see that it was kept in good repair. The last four years of her life she has suffered the loss of two brothers and one sister and the sadness of the heart had left its imprint upon the face. She was sympathetic and kind, and the poor never appealed to her in vain, and even the tramp was never turned away from her door empty. On February 24th she was taken with grippe which resulted in heart failure and she died at her home near Jerseyville March 10. She was patient and kind and expressed her thankfulness to her daughter who watches with her during the entire illness. She was the last of a family of nine children, only three nephews and one niece remaining of the entire relation. The funeral took place from the family residence. CUMMINGS. Died 01-05-1979. Funeral Mass for Patsy Mardell Cummings, 48, of 1122 N. Sumner, Jerseyville will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at the Holy Ghost Church with Father William Hembrow celebrant. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. She died May 1 at Firman Deslodge Hospital, St. louis. She was born Nov. 13, 1930 in Jerseyville, a daughter of Elmer E. and Verna Burrows Cummings. She was a LPN at Jersey Community Hospital. She is survived by her parents; two sons, Daniel Green of Jerseyville and Patrick E. Green of Phoenix, Ariz; two sister, Betty King of Jerseyville and Lois Remshardt of St. louis, one grandchild. A son preceded her in death. Visitation form 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.
CUMMINGS. Died -04-1967. Requiem Mass was celebrated at ten o’clock Wednesday morning at St. Kevin Church in Rosewood Heights for Raymond Leslie Cummings, 57-year old former Jerseyville resident, who was pronounced dead on arrival at the Wood River Township Hospital on Sunday. He had suffered from a heart condition for a number of years. Mr. Cummings was a son of Mrs. Birdie Cummings of Seattle, Washington, and the late John Cummings. His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Iva Cummings; his mother, and two sisters, Mary Jean and Mrs. George Eckhoff of Seattle. His father, a sister, Mrs. Homer Hayes and a brother, John, preceded him in death. following his graduation from the Jersey Township High School, Mr. Cummings attended Shurtleff College, St. Louis University, and Rolla School of Mines. At the time of death he was owner and operator of Cummings Welding and Mfg. Company in Wood River.
CUMMINGS. Died 02-01-1982. Services for Theodore A. Cummings, Sr., 69, who died at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 2 at his residence in Carpenter, Ill., will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gubser Funeral Home by the Rev. William Beavers. Born July 13, 1912 in Illinois, he was the son of the late William W. and Cora Drumh Cummings. The World War II Army veteran was a retired yard maintenance employee from Lewis and Clark Community College. His survivors are one son, Ted Cummings Jr. of Carpenter; a sister, Idabell Brecht of Godfrey; two brothers, George Cummings of Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, the former Harriet Ladd who died in May, 1978, one brother and three sisters.

CUMMINGS. Thomas Cummings born in the American Bottom, entered his first 80 acres nearly a mile southwest of the main road from Jerseyville to Alton in 1824, adding another in 1828 and in 1833 he entered the east half of sw quarter of section 2, township 7, range 11 and built on west side of what is now called State Road. This was first on Alton road this side of the Piasa creek, and built a small cabin on the end of the 80 on which A. Davis lives, until the road entered the timber of where Old Kane is now located. Consequently Mr. Cummings and his noble wife were of necessity compelled to entertain any farers passing from the cities and older counties south of them in search of homes on the then sparsely settled prairies. No person can relate that any traveler was ever turned away, or deprived of sharing shelter, fare and fire with Mr. and Mrs. Cummings, whether they had or not money to pay in return. No one that ever know the worthy pair (one of whom God leaves with us yet) could ever believe the griping selfishness abode with either. Even a stranger, at the first glance of the eye, taking in its vision that opened and benevolent countenance of Thomas Cummings would have impressed on the mind, there is a man that would divide with his fellows his meal, yes, if necessary give all, and grow fat and more cheerful between that and the nest, by the pleasing reflection coming up now and again in his mind, that he had relieved one in distress. Tthe countenance of every child this worthy citizen has left around us, bespeaks this noble feature of their parents. When our country was set apart from Greene, and in its first organization, Mr. Cummings, in 1839 was elected one of the three county commissioners. He represented this county in 1848 in the Legislature of our State, died in 1856 at his residence, now occupied by his worthy widow, leaving a large and valuable estate to his heirs, the real estate being mostly bought of the government from 1824 to 1837. CUMMINGS. Died 27-10-1956. Funeral services for Thomas Cummings, a well-known resident of Jersey County, were held Monday afternoon, October 29, at two o’clock at Jacoby Brother Funeral Home. Reverend M. Edwards Breed, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiated at the rites and burial was in Grimes-Neely Cemetery west of Jerseyville. The death of Mr. Cummings occurred Saturday morning, October 27, at three-thirty o’clock at his home on North State Street following an extended period of declining health. He had observed his eighty-fifth birthday anniversary on Thursday, October 25. A life-long resident of Jersey County, Mr. Cummings had been active in farm circles, community affairs and in politics. He engaged in farming for a number of years and was one of the organizers of the Jersey County Farm Bureau. Mr. Cummings served as game warden during the administration of the late Governor Henry Horner. the decedent had also served as a member of the Board of Education of the Jersey Township High School. Prior to his retirement he was a rural mail carrier. Fraternally he was a member of Elks Lodge No. 954. The decedent was a son of the late Peter and Bridget Talty Cummings and was born in Jersey County on October 25, 1871. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Eva L. Sinclair Cummings. Surviving Mr. Cummings are one son, Howard H. Cummings of Washington, D. D., three daughters, Mrs. Blanche Wiseman of Fort Smith, Arkansas. Mrs. Hilda Nicol of Akron, Ohio, and Mrs. Virginia Roady of Jerseyville. He also leaves six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
CUMMINGS. Died 26-08-1953. Thomas Jefferson Cummings, 85 year-old resident of Jerseyville, died Wednesday afternoon, August 26, at 5:45 o’clock at the Watson Funeral Home in this city. The aged man was retired employee of the Steel Mill in Alton. He was a son of the late Marion and Caroline Brannen Cummings and was born in Greene County on January 18, 1868. His age at the time of death was eighty-five years, seven months and eight days. Mr. Cummings is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Rufus Cusic of Brighton; three sons, Davis LeRoy Cummings of Wood River, Lloyd L. Cummings of Alton and George Cummings of Altadina, California; one brother, Marion Cummings of Alton and one sister, Mrs. Lillie Smith of Alton. He also leaves sixteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. The body is at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where friends may call after 4 p.m. today (Thursday) until noon Friday, then at the Alton Gospel Tabernacle. Final rites will be held at the Alton Gospel Tabernacle in Alton, Friday afternoon, August 28, at two o’clock. Reverend Melvin D. C. Clain of Jerseyville will officiate at the services and burial will be in the Upper Alton Cemetery.
CUMMINGS. Died 18-06-1987. Verna Faye Cummings, 79, died at 2:41 p., Thursday, June 18, 1987, at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. Born in Illinois, she owned and operated Cummings Grocery Store in Jerseyville for 15 years. The daughter of the late William and Lucy Shaw Burrows, she married Elmer Cummings on Aug. 2, 1923, in Alton. He preceded her in death in October 1985. Survivors include two daughters, Betty King of Jerseyville and Lois Renshardt of St. louis; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Visitation is scheduled 4to 9 p.m. Saturday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Order of Eastern Star will have services during the visitation. Funeral services will be at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. John Wilson officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church of Jerseyville.
CUMMINGS. Buried 02-02-1976. The funeral of William Chester Cummings, Sr., 68, of R. R. 1, Dow was conducted on Feb. 2 from the Gubser Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Spain of the Hartford Assembly of God Church officiating. Burial was in the Newbern Cemetery, Newbern. He was born on April 16, 1907 in East St. louis, a son of William Washington and Cora E. Drumh Cummings. His survivors are his wife of 28 years, Mrs. Emma Eva Alexander Cummings; one son, William Chester Cummings, Jr., Jerseyville; a daughter, Mrs. Juanita Hutson of St. Louis; two sister, Mrs. Idabell Stage of Dow and Mrs. Pearl Gibson of St. Louis; three brothers, George Cummings and Charles Cummings of Dow and Theodore Cummings of Godfrey; five grandchildren.
CUNNINGHAM. Died 28-05-1970. Final rites for Mrs. Alma Theresa Cunningham of this city were held at the Holy Ghost Church with Requiem Mass celebrated by Rev. Robert Heintz. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where the Rosary was recited on Friday evening. The death of Mrs. Cunningham occurred Thursday morning at 5:50 o’clock at Jersey Community Hospital where she had been a patient three days. Mrs. Cunningham’s health had been impaired for sometime. Until recently she held a secreterial position with the Jerseyville Mutual Fire Insurance Company. She was a daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth Wagner Kleffner and was born Sept. 28, 1908, at Godfrey. Her age was 61 years and 8 months. Mrs. Cunningham, widow of Maurice Cunningham, is survived by two sons, Donald Cunningham of Roodhouse and Paul Cunningham of Jerseyville, one daughter, Mrs. George (Marilyn) Medford of Godfrey, fourteen grandchildren, one brother, John Kleffner of Jerseyville, and three sister, Miss Catherine Kleffner of Jerseyville, Miss Josephine Kleffner and Sister Gualbert of the Notre Dame Order, of St. Louis. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter, two sister and two brothers.
CUNNINGHAM. Died 27-01-1965. Mrs. Celist Wilba Cunningham, wife of Levis Cunningham, died suddenly Thursday afternoon, January 27, at 3:30 o’clock. Mrs. Cunningham, who resides on Route One, east of Jerseyville was stricken ill at her home. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the Jersey Community Hospital. Final rites were held at the Bethel Baptist Church Sunday afternoon, January 30, at two o’clock. Rev. Ray Snow, pastor of the Bethel Church of which Mrs. Cunningham was a member and Rev. Wm. Greet conducted the rites and interment was in the Kane Cemetery. She was a daughter of the late Jerome Hildred and Mrs. Lora Baldridge Hildred and was born in Rosedale Township, Jersey County on April 23, 1903. At the time of death she was aged 62 years, 9 months and 4 days. Surviving her in addition to her husband and mother, are two daughters, Mrs. Robert Krause of Jerseyville, and Mrs. Lewis Ruyle of Medora; two sons, LeRoy Cunningham of Tularosa, New Mxico, and Jay M. Cunningham of Alton; two grandchildren; one brother, Henry Hildred of Jerseyville, and one sister, Mrs. Etta Hutchinson of Fort Collins, Colorado. One daughter, Wilba, preceded her in death.
CUNNINGHAM. Died 07-11-1980. Clifton I. Cunningham, 86, of 401 Giddings Ave., Jerseyville died at his home at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7. He was born April 14, 1894 in Calhoun County, the son of the late John and Mary Ritchey Cunningham. He married Lula Groppel, June 29, 1921. He retired from Olin Corp. in 1959. He was a 60 year member of the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 and a veteran of World War I. He is survived by his wife, one son, Clifton Cunningham Jr., of Fieldon; two daughters, Ilda Vahle and Margaret Allen, both of Jerseyville; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one brother Wesley J. Cunningham. Funeral services were held at the Gubser Funeral Home Nov. 10, Reverend R. E. George officiating. Burial was in Gunterman Cemetery near Fieldon. The family has designated the United Methodist Church and the Heart Fund as memorials.
CUNNINGHAM. Died 24-08-1981. Graveside services were conducted Friday afternoon at the Fieldon Cemetery for Cora Cunningham, 70, of White Rock, N. M. who died at 2:15 p.m. Aug. 24 in New Mexico. She was born Aug. 17, 1911 in Fieldon, a daughter of Frank and Tina Young Schaaf. Her survivors include her husband, William S. Cunningham of White Rock, N. M.; one son, Samuel Cunningham of Trafford, Pa.; two daughters, Catherine McCarthy of East Alton and Bonnie June Hamilton of Amarillo, Tex.; five grandchildren and a great grandchild; two brothers, Lawrence Schaaf of Godfrey and Russell Schaaf of Wood River; three sister, Bertha Schaaf and Emma Isringhausen of Jerseyville and Thelma Murrell of Grafton. The American Cancer Society has been named as a memorial.
CUNNINGHAM. Died -04-1971. Denise Lavonne Cunningham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Maurice Cunningham of 107 Circle Drive, Jerseyville, died at seven-twenty o’clock Thursday morning at Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. Her death occurred on her ninth birthday anniversary. Denise was stricken with leukemia at the age of three and one-half years and for the past few years she has been hospitalized on several occasions. When her health permitted she attended Holy Ghost parochial school and despite her frailty she was present, in a wheelchair, for the ground breaking of the new Holy Ghost Church last fall. The Mass of the Angels was read for the funeral of Denise at her parish church Monday morning at nine-thirty o’clock with Father Robert Heintz, celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation hours were held on Saturday evening and Sunday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where the Rosary was recited at eight o’clock Sunday night. In addition to her parents, Denise is survived by one sister, Cynthia Yvonne; her maternal grandparents, Mrs. and Mrs. William C. Schaaf of Jerseyville and her great grandparents, Mrs. Ruth Schaaf of Jerseyville and Mrs. and Mrs. Harry M. Legate of East Alton.

Cunningham, 62, of 701 Page St., Jerseyville will be conducted tomorrow afternoon, July 18, at 2 p.m. from the Jacoby Funeral Home. the Rev. L. E. Hutchinson will officiate. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Her death occurred at 2:55 a.m. on July 15 at the Jersey Community Hospital. She was born Aug. 7, 1912 in Greene County, a daughter of John C. and Effie Berger Winters. Mrs. Cunningham was a member of the State Street Baptist Church. Her survivors include her husband, James L. Cunningham; four sons, James C. Cunningham of Spotsylvania, Va., Robert L. and Kenneth E. Cunningham of Jerseyville and Lt. Wilbur L. Cunningham, San Diego, Calif., one daughter, Mrs. Paul (Joy V.) Vice of Belle Fourche, S. D.; a step daughter, Mrs. Warren (Eileen) Pence of Palmyra; 21 grandchildren; five great grandchildren ; two brothers, Charles R. Winters, Auburn, and Roy Winter of Middleton, Mo.; three sister, Mrs. Lester (Celia) Edward, Mrs. Hilda Mohr and Mrs. Frank (Dimple) Corbett of Springfield. Her father, two brothers, one son and daughter preceded her in death. The family designated the building fund of the State Street Baptist Church as a memorial.
CUNNINGHAM. Died 21-02-1952. Grant Cunningham, a retired farmer of Grafton, died at six-ten o’clock Thursday morning, February 21, in Alton where he had resided for the past year and a half. Mr. Cunningham was a native of Calhoun County. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Cunningham and was born October 9, 1869. At the time of death he had attained the age of eighty two years, four months and twelve days. The deceased is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Ferol Wallace and Mrs. Reba Watson of Grafton, Mrs. Grace Brooks of Alton and Laura Venhuizen of Hartford, Connecticut; three sons, Grant Cunningham, Jr., of ?, California, John and William Cunningham of Grafton; one brother, John Cunningham of Hardin, eighteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The body is at the Jacoby Brother Funeral Home where friend may call after seven p.m. this (Thursday) evening. Services will be held there Saturday, Feb. 23, at eleven o’clock a.m. with Reverend Milvin McClain officiating. Interment will be in Valhalla Memorial Park.
CUNNINGHAM. Died 01-01-1977. Services were held at the Warner-Targhetta Funeral Home in Medora on Jan. 4 for Harry (Mike) Cunningham, 76, of Fidelity with burial in the Witt Cemetery, Rockbridge. He died at 1:40 p.m. on Jan. 1 at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. He was a telephone lineman for 47 years with Medora Telephone Co. and General Telephone Co. before retiring. He is survived by five sons, Harry of Summerville, Marion of East Alton, Larry of Brighton, Donald and Robert, both of Fidelity; eight daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Cope of Staunton, Mrs. Bernice Buck and Mrs. Nellie Taylor, both of Medora, Mrs. Helen Goodman and Mrs. Wanda Wallace, both of Fidelity, Mrs. Doris Shae of Moro, Mrs. Moreland of Chesterfield; a sister, Mrs. Linera Corbin of Perryville, Ohio; 57 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. His wife, the former Grace Meredith died in 1972.

James Lloyd Cunningham, 85, died at 11:55 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28, 1987, at his residence. the self employed farmer was born in Jersey County, son of the late James Monroe and Sarah (Grizzle) Cunningham. On Feb. 1, 1930, he married the former Elsie D. Winters in Jersey County. She died in 1975 He later married Lula Jane Huff, who died in 1983. Surviving are two daughters, Eilene Pence of Palmyra and Joy Vesta Vice of Rapid City, S.D.; four sons, Robert Cunningham of Jerseyville, Wilbur Cunningham of Medora, and James and Kenneth Cunningham, both of Spotsylvania, Va.; 21 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Whitlock of Jerseyville. He was preceded in death by a son, Samuel Cunningham; and a brother, Levis Cunningham. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. L. E. Hutchinson officiating. He is survived by his wife, the former Delores Shane, also formerly of Jerseyville, and four children, Linda, Pam at home, and Larry and Lewis of Alamogordo, New Mexico. Other survivors include his father, Lewis Cunningham of Jerseyville, and two sisters, Melba Krause of Jerseyville and Wilma Ruyle of Medora and one brother, Jay Cunningham of Bethalto.

Born in Fieldon, she was the daughter of the late Fritz and Lena (Arbogast) Groppel. She married Clinton I. Cunningham Sr. June 29, 1921, in Bowling Green, No. He died Nov. 7, 1980. Surviving are two daughter, Margaret Allen and Ilda Vahle both of Jerseyville; a son, Clifton I. Cunningham Jr. of Fieldon; nine grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by nine sisters and three brothers. Visitation will be 4-9 p.m. Sunday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday by the Rev. Mike Michaels. Burial will be in Gunterman Cemetery near Fieldon. Memorials may be given to the cemetery fund.

Cunningham in 1863 to which union 6 children were born, two preceding he in death, Lizzie – 2 and John 34 years. Mrs. Cunningham died at home of her daughter, Mrs. John Mohr, 6 miles east of Kane, 71 years. Funeral May 3 – Rev. T. J. CUNNINGHAM. Died 1921. Word was received Wednesday of the death of Owen Cunningham of East St. Louis hospital following an operation which he underwent last week. The arrangements for the funeral have not been learned, as yet. A letter from his son, W. F. Cunningham, brought the news last week that his father was in a serious condition. For many years, Mrs. Cunningham had been in the live stock business in East St. Louis.
CUNNINGHAM. Died 28-12-1987. Robert L. Cunningham, 55, of Taylorville, died at 4:35 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28, 1987, at St. Vincent Hospital in Taylorville, after a brief illness. Born in Medora, he was the son of the late Harry and Grace (Gaffney) Cunningham. A veteran of the Korean conflict, he retired in 1980 from Rapco Concrete Co. in Taylorville, where he was a truck driver. Surviving are five daughters, Cindy Clankenship of Ottowa, Ill., Betty Brown, Nancy, Sheila and Carla Cummingham, all of Springfield; three sons, Randy and Rodney Cunningham, and Timmy Cunningham of Litchfield; several grandchildren; eight sisters, Dorothy Cope of Staunton, Bernice Buck and Nellie Taylor, both of Medora, Helen Thurston of Cordell, Okla., Doris Jean Shaw of New Douglas, Carol Jane Rees of Franklin, Wanda Wallace of Fidelity and Sue Moreland of Chesterfield and four brothers, Francis Cunningham of Medora, Donald Cunningham of Fidelity, Marvin Cunningham of East Alton and Larry Cunningham of Brighton. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Williamson Funeral Home in Staunton. Services will be there at 10 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Vincent McKee and Jim Ballew officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Staunton. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
CUNNINGHAM. Died -02-1927. Thomas H. Cunningham died suddenly Saturday evening at his home in Alton. The deceased was a former resident of Medora. Funeral services were held from St. Patrick’s church in Alton on Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock, Rev. Fr. Francis Kehoe officiating. The remains were brought to Jerseyville and interment was in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery at twelve o’clock.
CUNNINGHAM. Died 23-11-1974. Funeral services for William Levis Cunningham, 75, of R. R. 1, Jerseyville were held Monday afternoon, Nov. 25, at the Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Earl Clagg officiating. His death occurred at 12:55 a.m. on Nov. 23 at Greenwood Manor. Burial was in Kane Cemetery. He was born Sept. 10, 1899 in Greene County, a son of James M. and Sarah Grizzle Cunningham. Mr. Cunningham was self-employed, Cunningham Bookkeeping, and was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church. His wife, Verlie Freeman Cunningham died in 1971. His first wife, the former Celista Hildred, died in 1966. He is survived by one son, Jay M. Cunningham of Bethalto; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Melba) Krause of Jerseyville and Mrs. (rest of article missing).
CURRAN. Died 02-11-1989. Catherine Curran, 87, died at 10:40 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2, 1989, at Jersey Community Hospital, Jerseyville. She taught elementary school in Jersey Community Unit School District No. 100 and St. Francis Xavier School of Jerseyville. Born in Carrollton, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Julia Keoghan McDonough. Preceding her in death were her husband, Gus Curran; four sister, Helen, Sarah McDonough, Mary Browning and Julia Misgades; and a brother, James McDonough. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville with a wake service at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville with Rev. CURRAN. Died -07-1972. John Curran of Longmont, Colorado, the last member of the immediate family of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard Curran, who for many years lived on a farm northeast of Jerseyville, died Friday morning at a hospital in Longmont. His death followed by six months that of his brother, M. A. Curran of Jerseyville, realtor and retired teacher. Mr. Curran was born and reared in this community where he received his education. He later went to Colorado to establish his home and before his retirement he was engaged in the realty business. The former Jerseyville resident, who had been ill, had re-entered the hospital only shortly before his death. His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Loretta Quinn Curran, also a former resident of Jerseyville, and two sons and three daughter by previous marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Greg Gibbons and Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Breitweiset and daughter, Barbara, of Jerseyville and Miss Josephine Gibbons of St. Louis went to Longmont to attend the funeral services for their uncle which were held Monday morning. The Mass of the Resurrection was concelebrated at St. John the Baptist Church and burial was in Mountainview Cemetery.
CURRAN. Died -01-1972. Martin Augustus (Gus) Curran of the firm of Curran-Gorman Realtors in Jerseyville died at six o’clock Monday morning at St. Mary’s Hospital in St. louis where he had been a heart patient for the past month. The Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Curran will be celebrated at ten-thirty o’clock this (Thursday) morning at St. Francis Xavier Church by Father R. T. Shea, pastor of Church, Father Roger Simpson of Edwardsville, Father James Schroeder of St. Louis, and Father John Bertman and Father Francis Lee of Quincy. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation hours were held Wednesday afternoon and evening at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where the Rosary was recited at seven o’clock. Mr. Curran, a son of the late Richard and Catherine O’Keefe Curran, was a lifelong resident of Jersey County. Her age at the time was seventy-five years, eleven months, and ten days. His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Catherine Curran, a retired teacher who has been associated with him in the realty business, and one brother, John P. Curran of Longmont, Colorado. For a number of years M. Curran was engaged in the teaching profession in Jersey County with the last assignment at East elementary School in Jerseyville. He was educated in the local school system and had two years college work. In addition to his teaching, he engaged in farming at the family homestead northeast of Jerseyville. Upon retirement from the teaching field, Mr. Curran became a salesman for the David H. Overy Realty firm and in 1960 he opened his own business, forming a partnership with James L. Gorman. Mr. Curran was active in the work of the parish affairs of St. Francis Xavier Church and was serving as senior trustee at the time of his death, an office which he had held for a number of years. He was also a member of the St. Francis Cemetery Board. The retired teacher had retained his interest in educational work through membership in the Retired Teachers Association on the local, state, and national levels. He was a member of the Alton-Wood River Board of Realtors. His fraternal affiliations included membership in the Jerseyville Council, Knights of Columbus, the Father Terrance Brady Assembly of Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and the Jerseyville Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
CURTIS. Died 14-10-1962. Christian Science services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon, October 16, for Miss Edna L. Curtis, a former local resident, whose death occurred at five o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Gienter Home in St. Louis where she had resided since December 1, 1950. Mrs. Margaret Leach was the Reader at the service and burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Miss Curtis was born March 25, 1878, in Otterville on the farm where Leslie Doughtery now resides. She was the daughter of William Dougherty and Sara Marie Dodson Curtis. The Family moved to Abelene, Kansas, in the spring 1884, returned to Jerseyville in 1891, then moved to Jacksonville in 1906, and from Jacksonville to St. louis in 1910. She received her early education in Kansas, and was graduated from the Jerseyville High School in 1897. She was educated in music, graduating from Mr. J. A. Carson’s Music School in Jerseyville. Later she studied with Nathan Sacks in St. Louis and taught in his studio. She worked in the Red Cross office in St. louis, doing stenographic and clerical work. She was librarian for eight years in the Jerseyville Library, and three years in the St. Louis Central Library. Miss Curtis’ survivors are cousins, one of whom is Mrs. Marcus J. Ryan of Jerseyville in whose home she visited regularly. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors Lodge of Jerseyville.
CURTIS. George R. Curtis, oldest son of R. N. and Emma Curtis, born Sept.23, 1865 in Montgomery Co., Ill. and died Feb. 6, 1881. 15 years.
CURTIS. Janet (Reddish) Curtis, was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Chapter L.R. and PEO Sisterhood, on the board of Civic Newcomers, a Cub Scout Den mother and home room mother at Fairview School. She is survived by her husband, Howard W. Curtis; two sons, Paul and Thomas; and her mother, Mrs. Kathryn Reddish of this city.
CURTIS. Died 04-02-1973. Private graveside services for Mrs. Janet R. Curtis, 31, of Springfield were held Tuesday at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Her death occurred at 10:30 a.m. on February 4 at Memorial Hospital in Springfield. Funeral rites were held at 9:30 Tuesday morning at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. James Barger and Rev. M. Edwards Breed officiating. Born in Alton the daughter of Mrs. Paul (Kathryn) Reddish and the late Paul W. Reddish, she attended school in Jerseyville, William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri, and Miss Higkey’s Business School in St. Louis.
CURTIS. Died 11-01-1917. Dr. John Thomas Curtis, born near Otterville in 1838, attended Hamilton school and graduated from a Medical school. Practiced his profession at Otterville for many years, and more than 30 tears ago moved to Abilene, Kans. where he had his home and practiced until retiring to the Soldier’s home. Died Jan 11 and buried at Abilene. Enlisted in Co. H. 97th Ill. Vol. Infantry in 1862 and later transferred to 1st Assistant Surgeon of the 99th Reg. Ill. Vol. Inf. with which remained until close of war. Leaves widow and several children, two sisters, one brother.
CURTIS. Miss Margaret Ethel Curtis died at home in St. Louis. July 16. Funeral at First Baptist Church in Jerseyville. Rev. W. W. Hicks.
CURTRIGHT. Died 23-05-1977. Services were held at the Davis Funeral Home in Granite City on May 25 for Cleve Curtright, 92, of Colonial Haven Nursing Home in Granite City. Burial was in the Sunset Hills Cemetery, Edwardsville. His death occurred on May 23 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Granite City. He was born in Jersey County on Feb. 23, 1885, a son of Alby and Laura Curtright. He worked in the steel mills from 1904 to 1937 and Was Superintendent of Streets in Granite City from 1937-1956. One son, Eldon Curtright, survives.
CUTTING. Died -07-1893. Leonard M. Cutting, son of Asa and Lydia Cutting, born in Westminster, Mass. Feb. 19, 1827. Attended public schools and Westminster Academy. He taught schools in part of Westminster. When 18, he went to Providence R. I. where he was clerk and book-keeper in large grocery store at Friendship and Edy Sts. Returned to Westminster and completed his course at Academy. When 24 years he went to Albany NY and engaged in wholesale chair business, Cutting and M?rrell. In 1851 married Susan Henderson of Rochester, NY. When 26 he went into business at Pittsfield, Mass as a member of Pirce and Cuting. In 1856 came to Jersey. Required six weeks to make the journey due to his illness. Was business manager of Jerseyville Young Ladies Seminary of which his wife highly successful principal. In 1862 entered the insurance business. Wife died three years ago. He invited mechanical invalid lifter. Leaves aged other, daughter, son, granddaughter. Trustee of Geo. Washington Educational Fund. First Presbyterian church. Ordained Ruling Elder May, 1870. Rev. Geo. I. King.
CUTTING. Died -01-1895. Mrs. Lydia M. Cutting, grandmother of L. M. Cutting of Jerseyville, died at Denver, Colo. Grandmother of Mrs. H. D. Stelle of Denver. She was born in Westminster, Mass. and lived there until about10 years ago when she came to this city to live with her son, the late L. M. Cutting. 90 years old. Member of Congregational church. Celebrated golden wedding in 1875. Funeral at Denver at home of Mrs. Stelle. Remains sent to Jerseyville for burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Short services held at home of Henry Nevius. Rev. Tyson.
CUTTING. Died 19-12-1951. Word has been received in Jerseyville of the death of Mrs. May Van Horne Cutting, 84, former Jerseyville resident, which occurred December 19 in Los Angeles, California. Mrs. Cutting was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. A. K. Van Horrne and was born in Jerseyville May 1, 1867. Her age at the time of death was eighty-four years, seven months and eighteen days. She was the widow of Leonard Cutting who for many years was engaged in the insurance business in Jerseyville. Mrs. Cutting had resided in California the past thirty years. The body was cremated and the ashes will be brought to Jerseyville for interment in Oak grove Cemetery.
CYRUS (FILLY). At his home in Litchfield, Ill., at 8 o’clock p.m., Friday, SEpt. 24, 1886, Watson J. CYRUS, aged 57 years, 9 months, and 10 days, of neuralgia of the heart. The name of the deceased was originally Watson James FILLY; he was the son of Ira and Amia M. FILLY, and was born, Dec. 14, 1828, at Jordan, Onondago Co., N.Y. The family removed to Morgan County, Ill., where, when Watson was 6 years old, his father died. A few years later, his mother married Matthew CYRUS, when by act of Legislature, his stepfather’s surname was added to his own. Soon after, the family removed to a farm near Jerseyville. Here the deceased was married to Elizabeth L. SUNDERLAND. Four children were born to them, two of whom, Mrs. Alice R. CUMMINGS adn Virginia E. DECKEY survive. For a year or two after marriage the deceased followed farming in Macoupin county a few miles west of this city. In 1857, he and his stepfather engaged in the hotel business in Litchfield, which they continued for some years. In 1861 his wife died, and two weeks later, their infant son aged 11 months. The funeral services on Sunday afternoon, at his late home, conducted by Rev. D. H. SNOWDEN, Ph.D.D.D. were largely attended. CYTER. Died -06-1922. Charles Cyter, 65 years, died at St. Jospeh in Alton. Funeral at Baptist Church. Rev. Paul Smith. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. Leaves two sisters, Mrs. Adelia Robertson and Enid, Okla. and Mrs. Elizabeth Miller of Jerseyville, six nieces, and four nephews. He never married. lived a quiet life greater part of Jerseyville, caring for his aged mother, who passed away three years ago. ME church.
CYTER. Died -01-1919. Mrs. Margaret Cyter, one of Jerseyville’s pioneer citizens, died at her home 90 years. Had been resident of Jerseyville for three quarters of a century. Born Sept. 10, 1828 in Posey Co, Ind. Leaving with her parents at the age of 16 to make their home here. Married Philip J. Cyter who died 30 years ago. Charles Cyter of Jerseyville, two daughters: Mrs. Elizabeth Miller, Jerseyville, and Mrs. Adelia Robertson, Katy, Texas, a niece, Mrs. Nellie Seehausen, and a nephew, Lester Fritz. Funeral at Methodist Church. Rev. F. O. Wilson. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.
CZAIA. Died -04-1897. Frank Czaia died at his home 1/4 mile east of Tenerriffe Mineral Well. Born in Hungary, Oct. 10, 1836, came to America in 1857 and to Jersey Co. in 1875. Lived on various farms, then bought the one he lives on, 60 years old. Oldest son, John, died in Kansas in 1893. Leaves widow, two sons and two daughters.
CZAIA. Died 23-09-1967. Funeral services for Mrs. Rosa Lee Czaia, life-long resident of Rosedale Township, were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Gospel Assembly Church in Jerseyville with the pastor, Rev. Harry Frazer and Rev. Eddie Baker officiating. Interment was in Rowden Cemetery. Visitation hours were held at the Gubser Funeral Home. The death of Mrs. Czia occurred Saturday, Sept 23, at 2:10 p.m. at the Jersey Community Hospital. She had been in ill health for sometime and had been hospitalized on previous occasions. Mrs. Czaia was a daughter of the late William T. and Lucinda Simpson Spry and was born at Fieldon July 11, 1886. Her age at death was 81 years, 2 months and 22 days. She had lived on the same farm for 70 years. Mrs. Czaia was the widow of Joseph F. Czaia. Surviving her are one son, Virgil Czaia of Fieldon, one daughter, Mrs. Floyd Gaither of Springfield, one foster son, Roy Scranton of Seatttle, Wash., two sisters, Mrs. Asher Bull of Jerseyville and Mrs. Ada Cummings of Alton, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Mrs. Frances Anna CZAIA passed away Sunday at 8 a.m. at the home of her son-in-law, Vincent Richey who lives 9 miles southwest of Jerseyville. Rev. E. T. Carroll conducted funeral services at the home yesterday morning, interment being made in the family cemetery near Nutwood. The lady attained an age of 75 years. Frank CZALA, commonly called Size, one of our most industrious, adopted citizens, died at his residence, 1-4 mile east of Teneriffe Mineral Well, Friday morning, April 6th, at 1 o’clock of blood poison caused by a malignant ulcer on his right hand and arm. He was born in Hungary, Oct. 10, 1836, came to America in 1857 and after trying various localities finally settled in Little Jersey in 1875. After being a tenant of farms in different parts of the county for several years he bought the place he died on and was rapidly accumulating a competence. He was sixty years, six months and six days old when he died. His oldest son, John, died in Kansas in 1893. A widow, two sons and two daughters are left to mourn their loss. Published April 6, 1897.
