VAHLE. Died 01-01-1967. Blanche Antionette Vahle, 67 years, 10 months, 11 days, was dead on arrival at Jersey Community hospital on New Year’s Day. She was the widow of Louis H. Vahle. Mrs Vahle was stricken ill at the home of Mrs. Clyda Daniels of E. Arch St. where she had gone to attend a potluck supper and card party. After becoming ill she was moved by ambulance to the hospital. Visitation and services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev H. O. Renken, pastor of Peace United Church of Christ, officiated and burial was in Fieldon cemetery. She was the daughter of the late Oscar & Emaline (Goshorn) Williams and was born in Greene County, February 20, 1899. She was a member of Evangelical church, Woman’s Relief Corps, Eagles Auxiliary, WWI Auxiliary, Royal Neighbors and Senior Citizens. Surviving are 1 son, Louis O. Vahle, Jerseyville; 1 daughter, Mrs. Arthur D. Powers, Grafton; her mother, Mrs. Oscar Williams, Jerseyville; 1 sister, Bertha; 3 grandchildren and 3 g-grandchildren. Her father and 1 sister preceded her in death.
VAHLE. Died 18-11-1951. Leo J. Vahle, 58, of Fieldon, and veteran of WWI, died November 18, at Jefferson Barracks hospital where he had been a patient for 2 weeks. The deceased was a son of the late Louis & Lena (Goetten) Vahle and was born in Jersey County, November 23, 1892. Mr Vahle is survived by 1 sister, Mrs. Dick Dunham of Jerseyville; and 2 brothers, Edward and Louis both of Jerseyville. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home inJerseyville where services were conducted by Rev. E. H. Fresen, pastor of Christ Evangelical & Reformed church. Interment was in Fieldon cemetery.
VAHLE. Died 21-04-1967. Lizzie C. Vahle, 93, died at Cole Hospital in Urbana. The former Jerseyville resident was the daughter of the late William & Eliza (Healey) Charnell. Services were held at First United Methodist church, with Rev. Louis Purcell officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation was at Gubser Funeral Home. Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Earl W. (Esther) Shaw of Urbana, and Mrs. Velma Pellikan, Also of Urbana. The later daughter, was a teacher in the local school system for several years prior to 1954; 6 grandchildren and 5 g-grandchildren. Mrs. Vahl’s husband, William, occurred in 1958. She was also preceded in death by 1 son Sherrill.
VAHLE. Died 10-03-1987. Louis O. “Louie” Vahle, 67, of rural Jerseyville, died March 10 at John Cochran Veterans’ hospital, St. Louis. He was born December 10, 1919 in Fieldon to the late Louis H. & Blanche A. (Williams) Vahle. He served in the Army in WW II and for the past 13 years had been supervisor of the Illinois Valley Work Project at the Susnig Center in Jerseyville. He married Ilda Marie (Cunningham) Vahle, July 6, 1941, in Jerseyville. He was a member of Moose Lodge, American Legion Post #492, VFW Post #4528 and First United Methodist church, Jerseyville. Surviving are his wife, Ilda; 3 sons, Roger, Kane, Ronald of Naples, Florida and Rodney of Jerseyville; 1 sister Emma Powers, Grafton; 7 grandchildren; and 3 g-grandchildren. The funeral was March 14, at First United Methodist church with Rev. Mike Michels officiating. Burial was in Fieldon cemetery, with graveside military rites by American Legion Post #492 and VFW Post #45280. Memorials may be given to First United Methodist church, Kidney research and the Heart Association.
VAHLE. Died 11-06-1977. Matilda Vahle, 89, widow of Edward Vahle, died June 11 at Jersey Community hospital. She was the daughter of the late John & Margaret (Arrogast-arbogast?) Hagen. She was born in Fieldon March 21, 1888. Her survivors are 1 son, Edward C. Vahle, Jerseyville; 6 grandchildren; 9 g-grandchildren; 1 sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Drainer, Jerseyville and 1 brother, Louis Hagen, Fieldon. She was preceded in death by her husband, 4 brothers and 1 sister. Funeral services were held at the United Methodist church, Jerseyville, with Rev. R. E. George officiating. Burial was in Fieldon cemetery. Memorials may be given to United Methodist church.
VAHLE. Died 08-08-1982. Ralph W. “Tom” Vahle, 59, of Godfrey died August 8, at St. Anthony hospital, Alton. He had been in ill health for some time. He was born November 22, 1922 in Jerseyville, son of the late Charles & Lena (Haushalter) Vahle. He had retired in July as an electrical foreman at Laclede steel after 37 years service. The Marine Corps veteran had received the Navy Cross during WW II and had served in Korea. Surviving are his Wife, Theresa (Schroeder) Vahle, whom he married may 12, 1948 in Jerseyville; 1 Daughter, Jeanne Dick of Carlsbad, California; 1 son, Thomas A. Vahle of Alton; 4 grandchildren; 1 brother, Lamar Vahle of Jerseyville; and 2 sisters, Charlotte Bray and Marjorie Darr of Jerseyville. The funeral mass was celebrated at St. Ambrose Catholic church, Godfrey with Rev. James Hill as celebrant. The Alton VFW conducted full military honors at the graveside at St. Patrick’s cemetery, Alton. St. Ambrose church building fund and the American Cancer Society were suggested as memorials. Visitation at Gent Funeral Home, Alton.
VALLENTINE. Died 08-1926. Emma Vallentine, 72, wife of John H. Vallentine, was interred in Oak Grove cemetery. Rev James Jones officiated. She leaves her husband, 1 son, John; 2 sisters and 3 grandchildren.
VALSTAD. Died 03-07-1990. Timothy Martin Valstad, 22, was pronounced dead at the Valstad Quarry, Fieldon, on July 3. He was born in Casper, Wyoming, son of Harold Valstad of Fieldon and Mary (Haass) Valstad of Casper. Also surviving are 2 brothers, Kristin J. and Judson D. Valstad, both of Fieldon; and his grandparents, Agnes Valstad of Carrollton and John & Charlotte Haass of Casper. Visitation and rosary were held at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home, Carrollton. Funeral mass was held at Holy Ghost Catholic church, Jerseyville with Rev. William Hembrow celebrant. Burial was in Carrollton city cemetery. A coroner’s inquest pending.
VAN BUREN. Born 14-02-1856, Hennepin, Putnam County, Illinois. Died 07-10-1903. Mrs. Chrissie J. Van Buren, 48, died at her home at Nurent’s Landing on October 10. She leaves her father, 2 sisters, 1 brother, her husband and 2 grown children. Rev. Thero, of the Elsah Methodist church, officiated at the funeral.
VAN DIKE. Died 09-1927. Charles Van Dike, 91, one of the last of the pioneer residents, died at his home. Funeral was from Presbyterian church with Rev. Harrold Farrill officiating. The father of the deceased was Reoloff Van Dike, a physician who came to Jerseyville in 1836 upon the solicitation of Dr. Edward DArcy, another prominent pioneer of this locality. Dr. Van Dike made the trip to Jerseyville and looked over the location. He then returned to his home in New Jersey and brought his family back with him and settled here, arriving 30 June, 1837. Charles lived in Jerseyville until he arrived at the age of 10 years when Dr. D’Arcy took him back east to attend school. They went by wagon to Alton, thence down the Mississippi river to the mouth of the Ohio and thence to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. From that city they went by canal and railroad to Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where they took a trip over the mountains on a railroad operated by a stationary engine. After a stop at Philadelphia, the travelers went on to Kingston, New Jersey where young Charles was left with his maternal grandfather, David Comfort. There he attended a preparatory school and later Princeton University. In August 1848, his mother and the other children of the family joined and after a visit with relatives in New Jersey, they returned to Jerseyville via Chicago and Alton. The family operated the old Jersey House until 1860. At the time he engaged in the livery business but after a year sold the business and moved to Christian County, Illinois. There he engaged in farming until 1882 with the exception of 2 1/2 years when he operated a 5,000 acre cattle and horse ranch in Texas some 30 miles from San Antonio. In 1882 he went to St. Louis and engaged in the coal & ice business. In 1916 he sold that business and returned to Jerseyville. In 1857, he married Martha E. (Smith), a native of southern Illinois, the daughter of John F. & Sarah (McGuire) Smith. They were parents of the following children: Frank & Mrs. Denison of St. Louis, Mrs. Emma Goss of Berkley, California; Walter and Miss Mary Van Dike who resided in Jerseyville with their father. 2 children, Gussie and Charles preceded him in death. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and for 26 years was chorister of Central Presbyterian church of St. Louis. When he left that city he was presented a gold headed cane by the members of the congregation as a token of appreciation for his long period of service in the church. Mrs. Van Dike preceded her husband in death, passing from this life 22 November, 1913.
VAN DIKE. Died 02-1918. Harry R. Van Dike nephew of Chas Van Dike of Jerseyville and son of Edward L. Van Dike died at this home in Chicago. The remains were brought to Jerseyville for burial on the south bound C & A and taken to the Fales undertaking parlors, where funeral services were held by Rev. W. S. Neely. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery.
VAN DUYNE. Died 1880. John Van Duyne, 33, born at Bound Brook, Summerset County, New Jersey, in 1847. He was taken by Charles P. Holcombe, deceased, late of this city, when but 7 years old. He continued to live with the Holcombe family and with James P. Holcombe, proprietor of the National Hotel, until last Thursday, the day of his death. John was a faithful servant and generally known by all the guests of the hotel. He was schooled by the Holcombes and was of more than ordinary intelligence. His funeral was from the Baptist church, (colored) last Saturday. A large number were in attendance. Rev. Solomon J. Griswold officiated at the funeral. Pall bearers were: Israel Evans, John A. Evans, Willis Brown, Geo Cisco, Andy Thomas and Pleasant Phillips. He leaves his widow, father, mother, 2 sisters and 3 bro.
VAN HORBEKE. Died 1907. Ferdinand Van Horbeke, died at his home of dropsy of the heart. Funeral from his home with Rev. D. Shouse. Burial in Medora cemetery.
VAN HORNE. Died 1921. Dr. A. K. Van Horne is dead. According to a message received last Friday morning, February 21st. He died at Long Beach, California. More than a year ago Dr. and Mrs. Van Horne and daughter Stella went to California to live. Dr. Van Horne, 89, was born at Glenham, New York, April 2, 1831. The son of Elijah and Polly Van Horne. The family came to Jersey County before 1839. He saw this community grow from the wild and unpopulated prairies and timber lands to a thickly populated municipality. His boy hood days were on the farm of his father. He attended local schools. He began the study of medicine in Jerseyville and continued at the same until 1902. He married twice, his first wife Elizabeth Bacon and their children who survive are: Mrs. Ella V. Casey of California, Hugh Van Horne of Pawnee City, Nebraska, Mrs. L. M. Cutting of Los Angeles, California, Mrs. Perry Schrock of Santa Anna, California and Mrs. W. H. Grahm of East Auburn, California. His second wife and daughter, Miss Stella Van Horne survive. He was the last charter member of Jersey County Medical Society. He was a splendid type of early pioneer. He was a charter member of Jersey Chapter No. 40, Royal Arch Masons and Order of Eastern Star, and also the oldest member of Jerseyville Lodge, AF & AM. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.
VAN HORNE. Died 10-1881. Mrs. E. S. Van Horne, wife of Dr. A. K. Van Horne, died at her home. She was a most estimable Christian lady of refined tastes and culture. Funeral was held from the family residence. The pallbearers were: Joseph G. Marston, Robert Newton, Levi E. Cory, Ed. Trabue?, C. C. Cummints?, Jacob S. Darby, Lewis Terrill and James S. Daniels.
VAN HORNE. Died 03-1868. Col. Elijah Van Horne, 82, died at his home. A firm friend, a kind neighbor, an honest man, the noblest work of God has passed away. He was not connected with any church, but for many years, he was a bright and shining member of the Masonic fraternity, and at his request was buried by those who had been raised by the lion’s paw, or the strong grip of a master mason. Masonry was his religion and to its teachings he gave his earnest attention. He came to Jersey County in the fall of 1833. A Lodge of Master Masons was organized at the house in a room built on purpose for the occasion by the deceased. It was a solemn sight to see that vast procession as it moved around the bier, and many a silent tear drop as it fell paid tribute to the worth of the dear departed. The procession, headed by the Jerseyville band, playing a funeral dirge. Next, 200 Master Masons and then family and friends. Burial service read by honorable Brother J. English. The white apron, the emblem and the badge of a Mason, more honorable than the star and garter, more ancient than the golden fleece or Roman eagle or any other person except he be a Mason, after which the sprig of acacia was deposited by every Mason present teaching that beautiful lesson of the immortality of the soul. Each member then drew his left hand glove and deposited it on the coffin, after which the grand honors were given and all that was mortal of Col. Van Horne was forever hid from view. He was buried in the private cemetery of the family.
VAN HORNE. Died 1922. George H. Van Horne, Sr., a lifelong resident of Jersey County, died Thursday am, October 12th, in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he went 1 year ago to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. Earl Baker. Mr Van Horne’s illness began 2 years ago, in October 1920, when he was thrown from the tractor with which he was plowing wheat ground, on his farm south of Jerseyville, sustaining severe and serious injuries to his head. For a number of weeks, Mr. Van Horne hovered between life and death, ultimately recovering his physical strength, but never became quite himself. After going to Texas, Mr. Van Horne’s health became much worse and finally death came as a relief on Thursday October 12th. The remains will be brought to Jerseyville on the 7:37 train Saturday evening, and taken to the home of a niece, Mrs. Herbert G. Neely. His daughter, Mrs. Earl Baker, of Wichita Falls, accompanied the remains to St. Louis, where she was met by her brothers. George Van Horne, Jr., and Columbus Van Horne of Auburn, Illinois. The decedent is survived by his 2 sons and 1 daughter., and 5 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 pm from the Presbyterian church, Rev. H. S. Farrill officiating. The pall bearers will be D. P. Pritchett, Judge C. S. White, Wm. P. Richards, George Bandy, L. Beaty, and John Keener. The men’s quartet, John N. Beaty, F. G. Schwarz, Joseph McReynolds and Everett Alexander will sing. Interment in Oak Grove cemetery.
VAN HORNE. Died 25-09-1875. James E. Van Horne, died September 25, 1875. He married Nancy Wilson on April 4, 1837 and came west from New York to live with his family for 3 years. They later moved to a place of their own. They were parents of 5 children, 3 preceding them in death. He was survived by his wife, Nancy; 1 daughter, Antonette and 1 son, George H.
VAN HORNE. John W. Van Horne, 22, second oldest child (Mary J., oldest) child of James & Nancy (Wilson) Van Horne, accidentally shot himself February 18, 1864.
VAN HORNE. Jubbard (Hubbard?) Van Horne, 3rd oldest child of James & Nancy (Wilson) Van Horne, died in infancy.
VAN HORNE. Mary J. Van Horne, 19, daughter of James E. & Nancy (Wilson) Van Horne, was drowned March 18, 1858.
Died, in Chicago, at half-past three a. m., Feb. 2, Miss Mary VAN HORNE, in the 39th year of her age. She was a former resident of Jerseyville, but moved to Chicago 10 or 12 years ago. From Jersey County Democrat, March 1881, possibly March 10.
VAN HORNE. Died 09-1898. Nancy Van Horne, 85, nee Nancy Wilson, was born in Harpersfield, Delaware County, New York, on August 4, 1813. She married James E. Van Horne, April 4, 1837. They came west and lived with her husband’s family for 3 years. They then moved to the place where she died. Her husband preceded her in death 25-09-1875. They were parents of 5 children, George and Antonette survive. Mary j, 19, the oldest child was drowned March 18, 1858; John W., 22, the second oldest accidentally shot himself February 18, 1864; Jubbard (?Hubbard), died in infancy. After the death of her husband, she resided with George until the summer of 1885, when she went to live with Antonette. She had suffered a stroke and become blind. Funeral from Presbyterian church.
VAN HORNE. Died 30-12-1919. Mrs. Sarah Cummings Van Horne, wife of George H. Van Horne, Sr., died at home in Jerseyville, December 30, at age 52. Funeral was held at home, Rev. James A. Sager of Edwardsville and Rev. F. O. Wilson officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. She leaves her husband, 1 son, George H. Van Horne, Jr.; a step-son, Columbus Van Horne, Fort Worth, Texas.; a daughter, Miss Phoebe Van Horne, 3 Brothers, Frank and Harry Cummings, Jerseyville, and Thomas H. Cummings, Roodhouse. The mother, Mrs. Phoebe Cummings, died December 12th.
VAN LIEU. Died-12-1903. Catherine Van Lieu 71 died at home. Miss Van Lieu was the last member of the Jeremiah Van Lieu family living. Her nearest relative surviving, being the family of her brother Fred Van Lieu in Beatrice, Nebraska. The funeral was held in the home by Rev. J. G. klene(?). She was the daughter of Jeremiah Van Lieu who died in 1876 and Margaret Van Lieu who died in 1877. She was born in New Jersey, March 20, 1832 and came to Jersey County when 6 years old. Funeral January 1, 1904. Pall Bearers: Judge White, E. B. Shafter, George Van Horne, John Keehner, A. H. Cochran, Joel E. Cory, Walter Cory and Ed Cross. Out of town persons, who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Mary Van Lieu , John Van Lieu and Mrs. John Smith all of Beatrice, Nebraska. Mr and Mrs. R. F. Mills of Kansas City (Com,?). Mrs. Henry Carkhuff and Miss Ella of Roodhouse, and Mrs. E. A. Cook of Upper Alton.
VAN LIEU. Died-03-1876. Mr. Jermeiah Van Lieu, 84, died at home 2 miles east of Jerseyville. He was born in Somerset County, New Jersey and married in New Jersey on March 2, 1814, to Miss Margaret Beard, who survives. They were married over 62 years. Of 4 children born to them, 2 remain. He moved to this county in 1839. Funeral from the home, Rev. J. W. Stark officiating.
VAN LIEU. Died 03-1908. Former resident, Mrs. Mary Van Lieu, 72, died at her home in Beatrice, Nebraska. The body was brought to Jerseyville for burial. Funeral was held by Rev. W. W. Hicks from the home of Paul Thatcher.
VAN METER. Died 27-12-1985. Edith M. Van Meter, 81, Route 1 Jerseyville died December 27, at Jersey Community hospital. She was born in Staunton, December 30 1902, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Schreiver) Liffets. She married Russell L. Van Meter on October 31, 1925 in Alton. He died November 30, 1973. She leaves 2 Sons, Russell Jr. of Florissant, Missouri and Richard of Jerseyville, 1 daughter, Margaret Bopp of Florida; 1 brother, Edward Liffets of Jerseyville; 1 sister, Emma Numes of Jacksonville; 10 grandchildren and 7 g-grandchildren.
VAN METER. Died 30-11-1973. Russell Leroy Van Meter, 68, of Rural Route 1, Jerseyville was pronounced dead on arrival at 8:25 pm November 30 at Jersey Community hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack. A dairyman and Jersey breeder, he was born August 17, 1905 a son of Mark and Maude (Handlin) Van Meter. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Edith (Liffets) Van Meter; 2 sons, Russell Leroy of Florisant, Missouri, and Richard of Jerseyville; 1 daughter, Mrs. George (Margaret) Bopp of Holiday, Florida; his mother Mrs. Maude Van Meter of Alton; 10 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Raymond of Alton and Ralph of White Hall; and 1 sister, Mrs. Ted Winslow of Jerseyville. Final services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, Monday afternoon December 3, with the Rev. A. A. Ledebuhr officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation was held at Jacoby Funeral Home.
VAN NORT. Died 02-1889. Otterville – Wm. Van Norts’ oldest son died of typhoid fever last Monday after a long illness. He had catarrah in connection with the fever, which was the immediate cause of death.
VAN PELT. Died 1921. Clark Van Pelt, 77, died at his home in Atlanta, mo. He was a retired Civil War soldier. Born in Jersey County the son of Ralph Hagaman Van Pelt, who came to this region from New Jersey about 1830. Scott Van Pelt’s grandfather emigrated from Holland. Ralph Van Pelt was the father of 19 children, only 2 of whom are now living. W. S. Van Pelt and Mrs. Hanna Thatcher. The deceased is survived by his widow and 3 children. All of whom are married and live in Atlanta, mo.
VAN PELT. Died 08-1985. Lucy Van Pelt, 84, died at 10:25 pm Saturday at Carlinville Area hospital. She was born in Besiege, France, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jules Bastide. In 1915, in Peoria she married Lawrence Van Pelt, who died in 1977. Survivors include 2 sons, Frank of Modesto and Robert of Carlinville; 1 daughter, Dolores Sooy of Ft. Collins, Colorado; 6 grandchildren; 9 g-grandchildren; and 1 brother, Frank Bastide of Bicknell, Indiana. Visitation will be from 9-12 noon Wednesday at the Heinz Funeral Home in Carlinville, where private services will be conducted Wednesday. Burial will be in May Field Memorial Park cemetery in Carlinville. Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association or a charity of one’s choice.
VAN PELT. Died 02-1904. Mrs. Sarah Van Pelt, 86, died at home of daughter, Mrs. Libble Garretson in Peoria. Funeral from Mrs. Garretsons home and body to Jerseyville for interment.
VAN PELT. Died 09-1911. Wilber Van Pelt, 60, born February 17, 1851 in Jersey County, Illinois. He moved to Missouri in 1873. He married Isabella Martz (could have been a letter left out ma rtz) on November 2, 1875. They were the parents of 8 children, 3 dying in infancy. He leaves his wife and 5 children. Joined Methodist church South in 1880, and late Methodist church at Atlanta, mo. Loved the church and its ministers. He was honest, prompt to meet every need of his fellow man. Funeral from the home; burial at Shilo cemetery. Atlanta mo Express.
VAN PELT. Died 28-07-1927. Funeral services of Justice of the Peace Winfield Scott Van Pelt were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 at the Jacoby Brothers Chapel on North State Street, Rev. Harrold S. Farril, pastor of the Presbyterian church officiating. He was born May 2, 1848, on a farm 5 miles northeast of Jerseyville and passed from this life at his home in this city, Thursday, 7 am, July 28. At the time of his departure, he was 79 years, 2 months, and 26 days of age. He was the son of Penelope (Stout) and Ralph Hageman Van Pelt, who were both natives of New Jersey. He was reared on his father’s farm and when opportunity offered, attended the district school near his home, taking advantage of such meager educational advantages as were offered. Nov 16, 1869, he was married to Miss Sarah J. Norris who died during the autumn of 1870. She was a native of Preble County, Ohio and to this union 1 son, Charles, now deceased, was born. July 6, 1876, he was united in marriage with Miss Alice Burch, who was born in Jerseyville, a daughter of David and Mary (Fields) Burch, natives of Kentucky. To this union 3 daughters were born. They and their mother survive. The daughters are, Mrs. Virginia Wood of Hunington Beach, California, Mrs. Thomas A. Kraus of St. Louis, and Mrs. Leonard Glassbrenner of Jerseyville. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 1 g-grandchild and 1 sister, Mrs. Hanna Thatcher of this city. After his first marriage he followed farming but later moved to Jerseyville where he engaged in the packing industry. Later he learned the carpenter trade and in the course of time became a contractor and builder, many of the present homes in Jerseyville having been built by him. In 1909 he retired as a carpenter and was later Elected Justice of the Peace of Jersey Township which official position he held up to the time of his death, although he had not been active as such for several years.
VAN TASSEL. Died 12-1985. Frederick (Bob) Van Tassel of Peoria, formerly of Jersey County was found dead at the wheel of his car Monday evening after returning to his home from work at his watch repair shop in that city. The deceased had been in ill health for several years but his condition of late had appeared to be improved. His body was found by his parents. The Van Tassel family formerly lived near Otterville and had moved to Peoria when the deceased was 8 years old. His age at the time of death was 41. In addition to his parents, Mr. Van Tassel is survived by 6 sisters and 2 brothers. 1 brother Everett Van Tassel, resides in Alton. Funeral services are being held in Peoria today, Thursday.
VAN WALLEGHEN. Died 18-11-1979. Mrs. Mary Ann Van Walleghen, 54, wife of Dr. Albert Van Walleghen of Rural Route 4, Jerseyville died at 4:45 am, November 18 at Barnes hospital in St. Louis after a lengthy illness. She was born August 10, 1925 in Newton Kansas. The daughter of John and Helen (Sadushy) Schaeffer. She is survived by her husband and parents, 5 sons, John of Wichita, Kansas, Joseph, James, Donald and David of Jerseyville; 1 Daughter, Gail Ann Naughton of Dubugue, Iowa; 2 sisters, Rita Crawford of Newton, Kansas and Bernadine Collins of San Diego California and 2 grandchildren. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 am November 21 at St. Francis Xavier church with Father Patrick Morrow celebrant. Burial will be in St. Francis cemetery. Visitation from 4-9 pm Tuesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where the rosary will be recited at 8 pm. The St. Francis Xavier building fund has been designated as a memorial.
VANARSDALE. Died 1914. Mrs. Mary Vanarsdale of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, died at the home of her son, Geo Vanarsdale of Oklahoma City. The news of her demise was received here by her sister Mrs. Elizabeth Wyckoff of Jerseyville. The remains were taken to her former home at Flemington, New Jersey for burial. Mrs. Wyckoff and several other of Jerseyville went to St. Louis to meet the funeral party.

VANAUSDALE. Died 10-02-1975. Daniel Liberty Vanausdale, 53, of Alton, died February 10 at Alton Memorial hospital. He was born January 26, 1922 at Grafton, he was a son of Otis & Cassandra (Heath) Vanausdale. He was a veteran of WW II and was a meat cutter by trade. Services and visitation were from Jacoby Funeral Home, Grafton. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery. Surviving are his widow, Wanda Vanausdale; 4 sons, Marc, Daniel and Larry of Alton and Richard Dennis of Rock Falls; 1 daughter, Mrs. Larry (Nancy) Teray, Memphis, Tennessee; 4 grandchildren; 4 brothers, Robert of Grafton, Jack of California, Timothy of Chicago and Raymond of Shipman; 2 sisters, Mrs. Robert (Geraldine) Rowling of Grafton and Mrs. Harold (Ila) Laubscher, Grafton. His parents, 1 brother and 1 sister preceded him in death.
VANAUSDALE. Died 25-03-1989. Jack Vanausdale, 54, former Grafton resident, died March 25 at his home in Carson, California. He was a construction laborer and retired in 1970. He was born September 14, 1914 in Grafton to Otis & Cassandra (Heath) Vanausdoll. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Wilmington, California; Elks Lodge of Carson, California, and the Grafton American Legion. Survivors are, his wife; 2 Daughters, Pamela Vanausdale, Carson, California; Darlene Thomas, Fullerton, California; 2 brothers, Raymond Vanausdoll, Shipman, Illinois and Tim Vanausdoll, Cordell, Oklahoma; 1 sister, Ila laubscher, Grafton. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Chester, Robert and Daniel Van Ausdoll; and 2 sisters, Geraldine Rowlings and Cassandra Watson. Visitation was March 29 from Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Grafton Masonic Lodge #341, AF & AM, held Masonic services at the Funeral Home. Funeral services were held, March 30, at Grafton Baptist church with Rev. William Hendricks officiating. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery.
VANAUSDALE. Died 28-05-1988. Robert Vanausdale, 77, of Grafton, died may 28 at Christian hospital NE. He was born July 9, 1910 in Grafton to the Late Otis L. Vanausdale & Cassandra (Heath) Vanausdale. He married Margaret (Hopkins) Vanausdale on September 13, 1941, in Missouri. He was a self employed fisherman for Union Local 82 and was a member of the Elks for 47 years. Surviving are his wife; 1 sister, Ila Laubscher of Tracy, California; 3 brothers, Jack of Carson, California, Otis Ray of Shipman and Tim of Cordell, Oklahoma; 22 nieces and nephews. The funeral was conducted by Elks Lodge #954 on May 31, and Rev. William Hendricks performed the committal service. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery. Memorials may be given to Cerebral Palsy Foundation.
VANAUSDOLL. Died 15-01-1949. Allen Vanausdoll, 79 years, 2 months, 4 days, a retired farmer of Otterville, died January 15 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ross Seago, on Harbert St., Jerseyville. He was the son of the late Caleb & Martha (Hewitt) Vanausdoll and he was born in Christian County, Illinois, on November 11, 1869. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lenora Vanausdoll of Otterville, 1 son, Allen Laverne Vanausdoll of Alton and 1 daughter, Mrs. Seago of Jerseyville; 1 brother, James Vanausdoll, Dow; 7 grandchildren and 4 g-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev. Raymond Seago of Jerseyville officiated at the service and burial was in Noble cemetery.

She was born November 9, 1893 in Jersey County, daughter of the late Richard & Pauline (Gisy) Quitt. Her husband, Everett C. Vanausdoll, whom she married December 9, 1911, died November 3, 1953. Surviving are 4 Sons, Truman, Dearbourne, Michigan, Willie, Fieldon, Donald, Jerseyville and Darrell, Toledo, Ohio; 2 Daughters, Paulene Abbott, Jerseyville and Marlene Schmidt, Wabasha, Minnesota; 17 grandchildren and 19 g-grandchildren. Memorials may be given to United Methodist church.
VANAUSDOLL. Died 12-03-1982. Charles A. Vanausdoll, 67, retired Jerseyville businessman, died March 12 at Jersey Community hospital. He had been in ill health for some time. The WW II veteran owned and operated Vanausdoll Plumbing & Heating and was a Pioneer Seed Corn salesman. He was also manager of Vanauasdoll Apartments. Born April 20, 1914 in Grafton, he was a son of Everett & Carolene (Quitt) Vanausdoll and was a member of First United Methodist church. He was a past 12th District Commander of the Vfw and past Commander of Jerseyville VFW, manager of the former Vfw Corvett Drum & Bugle Corps and All American Pom Pom Drill Team, and was a member of the American Legion, Farm Bureau and Masonic Lodge. He had also served on the Illinois Valley ec Development Corp and the Jersey Water Boards. Surviving are his wife, Lura (Mourning) Vanausdoll whom he married December 14, 1940 in Grafton; 1 daughter, Janet Wiegand, Jerseyville; her mother, Carolene Vanausdoll, Jerseyville; 4 brothers, Truman of Dearborn Heights, Michigan, Darrell, Toledo, Ohio; Willie of Fieldon and Donald of Jerseyville; 2 sisters, Pauline Abbott of Jerseyville and Marlene Schmidt of Wabasha, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his father, and 1 daughter, Mary Ellen, who died October 14, 1946. Masonic services were conducted at Jacoby Funeral Home where services were held. Rev. R. E. George officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Memorials may be given to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.
VANAUSDOLL. Died-09-1963. Chester Heath Vanausdoll, 56 years, 4 months, 3 days, became ill at his home in Grafton and was moved to Jersey Community hospital where he was dead on arrival. He was a commercial fisherman and was born in Grafton on may 10, 1907, a son of Otis Vanausdoll and the late Cassie (Heath) Vanausdoll. Surviving are his wife Edna; 2 daughters, Mrs. Edna Fritico, Lake of Ozarks, Missouri; his father, who resides in Wilmington, California; 5 brothers, Robert and Jack Vanausdoll of Wilmington, California, Daniel Vanausdoll of Memphis, Tennessee, and Raymond and Tim Vanausdoll of Grafton; 2 sisters, Mrs. Geraldine Rowling of Grafton and Mrs. Ila Laubscher, Brighton and 8 grandchildren. Visitation and services were held from Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville on September 16, with Rev. Franklin Sipes officiating. Interment was in Scenic Hill cemetery.

VANAUSDOLL. Died 02-11-1953. Everett Charles Vanausdoll, 65, died November 2. He resided several miles northeast of Jerseyville, and was fatally stricken with a heart attack while working in a field at his farm. Others in the field, at a distance, including Mrs. Vanausdoll, saw him lying on the ground and death occurred before medical aid could be summoned. He was the son of the late Charles & Rena (Gowins) Vanausdoll and was born in Jersey County, September 18, 1888. Surviving are his wife, Mary V. Vanausdoll; 2 daughters, Mrs. Pauline Abbott of Zion, Illinois and Miss Marlene Vanausdoll, Kane; 5 sons, Charles A., Jerseyville, Truman of River Rouge, Michigan, Willie W, Fifeldon; A1/c Donald L. Vanausdoll, stationed at Craig Air Force Base, Selma, Alabama, and Darrell D., Kane; 3 grandchildren; 1 brother, Otis Vanausdoll of Grafton and 1 sister, Mrs. Ada Hooper of Jerseyville. He was a member of the Modern Woodman of America Lodge in Grafton.
VANAUSDOLL. Died 04-10-1967. James C. Vanausdoll, 92, of Dow, died October 4, at the home of his son & daughter-in-law Mr. & Mrs. James E. Vanausdoll, Dow. He had been in failing health for some time. Funeral services were held at Bethel Methodist church, East Newbern on October 7. Visitation was held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville and burial was in Noble cemetery, Otterville. The retired carpenter was a son of the Late Caleb & Martha (Hewitt) Vanausdoll and was born in Jersey County October 21, 1874. Surviving are 10 children: Theodore, Irondale, Missouri; James E., Dow; Huberte, Affton, Missouri; Mrs. Clarence Ferguson, Hazelwood, Missouri; Mrs. Lucille Josias, Wellston, Missouri; Mrs. Harry Hunt, Rosewood Heights; Mrs. Robert Hinst, Denver, Colorado; Mrs. Ernie Yates, St. Johns, Missouri; Mrs. Carl Kissel, Pacific, Missouri; and Mrs. Armand Maxeiner, Overland, Missouri; 16 grandchildren and 26 g-grandchildren. His wife, Christine Vanausdoll, and 3 children preceded him in death.
VANAUSDOLL. Died 18-07-1989. Kara Lanae Vanausdoll, 12, daughter of former Jersey County residents Michael & Kimberly (Frazer) Vanausdoll, died July 18 at Christian hospital ne. She was involved in a 2 vehicle accident near West Alton, Missouri. She was born in Jerseyville and had completed 6th grade at Arthur elementary school. Surviving are her parents; 3 brothers, Jared, Bradley and Shawn Vanausdoll all at home; grandparents Donald & Joan Vanausdoll of Jerseyville and Fred & Ruth Frazer of New Bloomfield, Missouri. Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville and was continued at Shrader Funeral Home in Arthur. The funeral mass was held in Arcola with Rev. Peter Paul Bertoldo as celebrant. VANAUSDOLL. Died 17-10-1952. Raymond Vanausdoll, 60, a Jerseyville painter, died October 17 at St. Joseph hospital, Alton. He had been in failing health for several weeks and had been taken to the hospital that day. He was born at Otterville on July 23, 1892. He is survived by 1 son, Harold A. Vanausdoll of – – – ; and 1 Grandson, Robert Vanausdoll of Bowling Green, Kentucky. Services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev. Laverne S. Poole, pastor of Baptist church officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.
VANAUSDOLL. Richard Vanausdoll, 30, a native of Jersey County, was slain last Wednesday night in Denver, Colorado. A 22 year old one time garage worker is being held by Denver police in connection with the tragedy. Vanausdoll was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Allen Laverne Vanausdoll of Shipman. He was born at Otterville and resided there until he was about two years old when the family moved to Alton. Mrs. Vanausdoll, her daughter, Mrs. Damon Helmontoler of Peoria, her sister, Mrs. Annabell Quinn of Jerseyville, and mother, Mrs. John Ortlieb of Alton, returned Tuesday from Denver where they had gone after receiving word of the incident. The body of Mr. Vanausdoll is at Staten Funeral Home in Alton where visitation was held. The Methodist church in Shipman was the scene of the funeral and burial was in Shipman cemetery. Vanausdoll and his wife, Edna (Easter) Vanausdoll, and their children had resided in Denver for about a year. He was an engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad in Denver, and had previously been an engineer and a switchman for the Illinois Terminal Railroad in Alton. According to reports Vanausdoll was killed by a charge from a shotgun fired as he approached a car in front of his southeast Denver home. The victim’s widow, Edna, 28, was reportedly being held for investigation. According to Denver police, the man in custody and Vanausdoll’s wife admitted to carrying on a romance. The victim was a veteran of the Korean conflict having served 4 years. He is the holder of the Bronze Star. Surviving are his parents; his widow; 1 son, Randy, 1 daughter, Elizabeth; 2 foster children, Becky and Cheryl Pope of Denver, 1 sister, Mrs. Damon Helomontoler of Peoria, 1 brother, Marvin Vanausdoll, who is serving in the Navy, his grandmothers, Mrs. Allen Vanausdoll, a resident of Otterville for many years and now residing with the Vanausdoll family at Shipman, and Mrs. John Ortlieb of Alton.
VANAUSDOLL. Died 20-07-1988. Ryan Martin Vanausdoll, 3 day old son of Martin Lee & Shelley Ann (Smith) Vanausdoll, died July 20 at Jersey Community hospital. Private, graveside services were held at St. Francis cemetery. Fr William Hembrow officiated. Surviving are his parents; 1 sister, Jamie, 3; grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Donald Vanausdoll and Mr. & Mrs. Douglas Smith, all of Jerseyville; and 3 g-grandmothers, Carlene Vanausdoll, Mary Arter and Bernice Hazelwonder, also all of Jerseyville.
VANDEVEER. Died 1931. Mrs. Jane Vandeveer, 89, died recently. Surviving are 2 nieces, Mrs. Fred Wilcox and Odis Voorhees.
VANDEVENTER. Died 1878. Isaac Vandeventer, 65, died in Jerseyville. Funeral from his home. Rev. J. W. Stark officiated. Mr. Vandeventer was a native of Middlesex County, New Jersey and came to this city in 1856. He was the father of Mrs. Andrew McDowell of St. Louis and brother-in-law of Jason H. Ames Esq. He had been an invalid for a number of years.
VANFOSSEN. Died 10-1983. Kathryn “Katie” Vanfossen, 81, of Route 1 Piasa, died at Memorial hospital, Springfield. She was born in Fidelity, daughter of the late William & Margaret (Mulchaey) Moore. She married Lee Vanfossen on May 10, 1926, in Alton. Surviving are her husband; 2 daughters, Mary Bond of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Margaret Anderson of Chesterfield, Missouri; 1 son, Robert of Piasa; 3 grandchildren; and 1 sister, Muriel Ewin of Medora. Visitation and rosary were held at Warner-Targhetta Funeral Home, Medora. Funeral mass was celebrated at St. John Catholic church, Medora with Rev. T. J. Davenport celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery, Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to masses.
VANFOSSEN. Died 06-05-1985. Lee Vanfossen, 85, formerly of Piasa, died may 6, at his home in Greenfield. Services were held at Warner-Targhetta Funeral Home in Medora with Harriet Wainright officiating. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery, Jerseyville. The farmer was born in Harvel, son of the late Robert & Lucretia (Matthews) Vanfossen. He had served on the Jersey County Board of Supervisors at one time. He married Kathryn (Moore) Vanfossen on May 10, 1926; she died October 27, 1938. Surviving are 2 daughters, Mary Bond, Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Margaret Hernderson, Chesterfield, Missouri; 1 son, Robert of Greenfield; 3 grandchildren; and 2 brothers, D. F. of East Alton and Marion of Alton. Memorials may be given to the Piasa Methodist church.
VANFOSSEN. Died 05-08-1954. Robert Lee Vanfossen, 86, died at his home near Piasa August 5. He had been ill for some time. Mr Vanfossen was a retired farmer of Fidelity Township and a member of Jersey County Board of Supervisors for 15 years. Visitation and funeral were held at Warner Funeral Home in Medora. Rev. William Davis, Methodist minister officiated with interment in Medora cemetery. He was born in Staunton, Virginia, September 4, 1867, and he resided in the east until the was 20 years old. At that time he came to Illinois, settling first at Champaign. From there he moved to Moultrie, Colorado. In 1898 he was married to Eva (Matthews) Vanfossen and the couple established their home on a farm near Morrisonville. Later they came to Jersey County, and since 1912 they had resided on the farm where his death occurred. The death of his wife occurred in 1951. Since that time his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Lee Vanfossen and family have made their home with him and assisted with his care – incomplete.
VANHOOSE. Died 30-03-1978. William Dale Vanhoose, infant son of William D. & Debra L. (McCoy) Vanhoose of Grafton, was stillborn March 30, at Jersey Community hospital. Besides his parents he is survived by his grandparents, Bill Vanhoose of Granite City, Mrs. Mary Scoggins of Jerseyville and Mr. & Mrs. Dale McCoy of Grafton; and g-grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Bill Vanhoose of Peoria, Mr. & Mrs. Earl Oliver of Missouri, Mr. & Mrs. Hallie McCoy of Grafton and Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Singleton of Hardin.
VANOSDALL. Mattie Vanosdall, 18, daughter of A. M. & Angeline Vanosdall, was born August 29. 1869. She died August 3, 1888. She had belonged to and was baptized in the Otter Creek Baptist church. Her funeral was held from that church with Rev. Aaron Dodson officiating. In her death her parents have lost a gem that they will find in heaven.
VANSYCKEL. Died 28-12-1875. Mrs. Maria Vansyckel, wife of Albert Vansyckel, Esq. Was considered good, pure and exalted in thought and deed, she loved and commended earnestly to others.
VARBLE. Died 09-10-19. Graveside services for Eiko Osawa Varble, 51, of Grafton were conducted Friday am at Scenic Hill cemetery. She died October 9, at 8:15 am at Barnes hospital in St. Louis. She was born sep 20, 1933 in Nigata, Japan, and was a cook at the Pere Marquette Lodge. She is survived by her husband, Howard Varble of Grafton; 1 son, Rickey of Godfrey; and 1 daughter Wanda M. Clines of Clinton; 4 grandchildren; plus several brothers and sisters in Japan. Arrangements were by Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
VARBLE. Died 07-01-1986. Elmer P. “Huck” Varble, 61, of Jerseyville, died January 7 in an Alton hospital. He was born July 27, 1924, in Calhoun County to George and Iona (Wilkins) Varble. He married his wife, Betty, on June 22, 1952. He was a carpenter and fisherman. Survivors include: his wife Betty of Jerseyville; 2 sons Elmer Eugene Varble of Fieldon and Frank Varble of West Harrison, Indiana; 4 daughters, Glenda Findley and Becky Varble, both of East Alton, Janet Weller of Jerseyville and Nancy Varble at home; 2 brothers Frank Varble of East Hardin and Melvin Varble of Williamsburg, Virginia; 4 Sisters, Thelma Sprong, of Hamburg, Helen Swisher and Margie Warren both of Shipman, and Velma Varble of White Hall; and 13 grandchildren. Visitation was January 19, at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, and the funeral was there January 10, with the Rev. R. E. George officiating. Burial was in the Hardin cemetery. A memorial has been established to the American Society.
VARBLE. Died 11-09-1991. Flossie Varble, 63, died at 4:16 pm Sunday August 11, 1991 at Jersey Community hospital in Jerseyville. She was born in Greene County on February 16, 1928, a daughter of Edith (Bell) Haneline of Jerseyville and the late Oscar Haneline. On September 20, 1947, in Carrollton, she married the late Marion S. Varble. He died may 19, 1983. Surviving in addition to her mother are 3 Daughters, Joyce Vaughn of Florissant, Missouri, Brenda Gress of Hardin and Laura Crone of Jerseyville; and 6 grandchildren. 3 Brothers Virgil, Russell, and Oscar “Junior” Haneline, preceded her in death. Visitation is from 4-8 today at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Rev. Fredrick A. Francis will officiate. Burial is in Oak Grove cemetery. Memorials may be given to the building fund of the church, where she was a member.
VARBLE. Died 22-04-1990. Howard M. Varble, 60, died April 22, at Alton Memorial hospital, after a lengthy illness. He retired as an operating engineer from Local 520 and was a US Army Korean war veteran. Born in Hardin, he was the son of Sylvia (Sevier) Kocher of Alton and the late Perry D. Varble. He married the former Eiko Osawa, March 29, 1955, and she died October 9, 1984. In addition to his mother, surviving are 1 son Rickey Varble of Grafton; 1 daughter, Wanda Clines of Weldon; 5 grandchildren; 1 brother, Gerald Varble of California; and 2 sisters, Eva Booth of Staunton and Shiela Wagner of Tuscon, Arizona. 1 brother and 2 sisters preceded him in death. Visitation was at Jacoby Schroeder Funeral Home, Jerseyville. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery. Memorials may be given to Lupus Foundation.

VARBLE. Lewis Varble, died at a hospital in Lancaster, California, August 18. The remains will be brought to Jerseyville for visitation and services at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev. Garold copper officiated at graveside rites. Varble was born at Kane, June 27, 1916, the son of George H. & Salemma (Lewis) Varble. He was a former merchant in Kane and was employed as an auto salesman in California. Surviving are his wife, Rachael (Witt) Varble; his mother; 2 sons, William Varble, Alton and Robert Varble of Lancaster, California; 2 daughters, Mrs. Lyle (Barbra) Gwyther, Sacramento, California, and Miss Beverly Varble, San Diego, California; 1 sister, Oleta Johnston, Lapuente, California and 2 grandchildren. Memorials may be given to Lancaster Community Hospital Cardiac Unit as memorial.
VARBLE. Services for Marlon S. Varble, 72, of Jerseyville were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Peace United Church by the Rev. Robert Broeder with burial in Oak Grove cemetery. He died at 5:30 pm May 19, 1983, at Jersey Community hospital after about 6 months of illness. He was born November 3, 1910 in Greene County, son of the late Charles Preston and Anna Catherine (Tuey) Varble. Varble retired in 1975 as a railroad maintenance worker for the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad after 29 years service. His survivors are his wife, the Former Flossie Haneline; 3 daughters, Joyce Vaughn, Florissant, Missouri, Brenda Gress and Laura Crone of Jerseyville; 4 grandchildren; and 1 brother, Oran Varble of Carrollton. He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers. The building fund of the Peace United Church of which he was a member was named as a memorial. Arrangements were from Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
VARBLE. Died 20-04-1982. Services for Paul E. Varble, 43, 1i56 Dolan Lane, Jerseyville were conducted Saturday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, by the Rev. William Elder with burial in Oak Grove cemetery. He died unexpectedly at 2:09 am April 20 at Christian hospital northeast, St. Louis. He was born June 9, 1939 in East Hardin, the son of the late George and Ione (Wilkens) Varble and was a construction laborer. His survivors are his wife, the former Carol Wilinzig whom he married July 15, 1967 in Jerseyville; 2 sons and 2 daughters. William, Michael, Paula and Ruth Ann Varble, all at home; 3 brothers, Elmer Varble of Jerseyville, Frank of East Hardin and Melvin of Williamsburg Virginia; 4 sisters Helen Swisher and Margie Warren of Shipman. Thelma Sprong of Hamburg and Velma Ray of Carrollton. The building fund of the Bible Baptist church of which he was a member was designated as a memorial.

Phyllis Ann Varble, 50, of Rural Route 3, Jerseyville, formerly of the Eldred and Carrollton area, died unexpectedly at 3:15 pm March 14 at Christian north east hospital, St. Louis where she was taken after becoming ill while attending a shower Friday evening. Mrs. Varble was a bookkeeper and secretary at Jersey Community high school, she was a member of the United Methodist church in Jerseyville. Born June 6, 1930 in Greene County she was a daughter of the late Frank and Velma (Standridge) Melow. She married Walter Varble December 10, 1949; he died October 23, 1979. She is survived by 4 daughters, Sharon Powers, Carol Smith, Barbara Schmieder and Nancy Varble, all of Jerseyville; 4 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Bonnie McGlasson of Eldred and Patricia Erlinger of Carlyle. Visitation will be from 4-9 pm Monday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton and until 11:30 am Tuesday. The body will lie in state from 1 pm Tuesday at the United Methodist church in Jerseyville until time of services at 2 pm. Rev. R. E. George will officiate and burial will be in the Mt. Gilead cemetery southwest of Carrollton. The Canton Nursing Center at Canton has been named as a memorial.
VARNEY. Died 02-02-1968. Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 pm at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, for Mrs. Claudia Idell Varney, wife of Edward J. Varney, who was pronounced dead on arrival at the Jersey Community hospital Thursday, February 2 at 11 pm. She had been ill for some time. Rev. Ray Herwig, pastor of the Delhi Baptist church, officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. A daughter of the late John and Frances (Lane) Balcom, she was born in Jersey County July 2, 1893. Her age at death was 74 years, 7 months, and 27 days. Mrs. Varney was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary. Surviving Mrs. Varney in addition to her husband, are 2 daughters, Mrs. Roy Fischer and Mrs. Leonard Richey, and 1 son, John Varney, all of Godfrey, 6 grandchildren, 7 g-grandchildren, and 1 brother, John Balcom of Jerseyville. She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 brother, Lee Balcom, and 1 sister, Mrs. Jesse White. Correction: Per Aunt Claudia’s death certificate the day of death was Feb 29, 1968 – Allen Austin.

His parents, wife, the former Claudia Balcom, 1 son, 1 daughter, 1 brother, and 2 sisters preceded him in death. Visitation will be from 4-9 pm Monday at the Funeral Home.

Mrs. Evelena (Lena) Victoria Varney, 78, died unexpectedly Saturday, November 30, at the home of Louis Wieland, 412 George St., Jerseyville, where she had been employed for a number of years. Mrs. Varney had been in ill health. She was a daughter of the late William and Josephine (Hetzel) Varney and was born in Jersey County on April 27, 1890. Her age at death was 78 years, 7 months, and 3days. Mrs. Varney is survived by 1 daughter, Mrs. Leonard Begnel of Alton, 1 granddaughter, Mrs. Tony Mayerhofer of Godfrey, 2 g-grandchildren and 2 brothers. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev. M. Edwards Breed, pastor of the First United Presbyterian church, officiated at the final rites held at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon at the Funeral Home. Interment was in Valhalla Memorial Park.
VARNEY. Died 01-10-1978. John William Varney, 84, a retired farmer of Rural Route 3 Jerseyville died at 9:58 am October 1 at Jersey Community hospital. He was born November 8, 1893 in Jersey County, a son of William and Josephine (Hetzel) Varney. He married Rachel Schaaf March 17, 1916. She died January 24, 1969. Survivors are: 1 son William L. Varney of East Alton; 1 daughter, Mrs. Ada White of Jerseyville; 13 grandchildren; 2 g-grandchildren; 1 brother Edward Varney, of Jerseyville. Visitation from 4-9 pm Monday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be conducted by Rev. Louis Kappler. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery.

Mrs. Varney, 80 years, 9 months, and 7 days old; was born in Jersey County, a daughter of the late Lewis and Sarah (Simpson) Shaw. She is survived by her husband, John W. Varney who served as supervisor from Otter creek township for a number of years; 1 son, William L. Varney of Chesterfield; 1 daughter, Mrs. George White of Jerseyville; 13 grandchildren; 1 Brother, Leonard Shaw, and 1 sister, Pearl Keulp, both of Oregon.
VASSAR. Died 20-06-1983. Services for Frank D. Vassar, 104 Hodge Court, Alton were conducted Wednesday am at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, by the Rev. Howard Opperman. Burial was in Fieldon cemetery. He died at 1:13 am June 20 at St. Elizabeth hospital in Granite City. A boilermaker in construction, he was a member of the Cherry St. Baptist church, VFW, Moose in Alton, and Local No. 417 in Wood River. His survivors are his wife, the former Iris Wall whom he married Ju?? 31, 1949 in Alton; mother Pearl Chistner, Lowry City, Missouri, son Charles, at home, daughter, Ginger Avery, Florissant, Missouri and brother Robert, Lake Don Deterra, Missouri; 2 grandchildren.
VAUGHN. Buried 24-10-1922. Mrs. Anna Ely-Vaughn, died at St. Joseph’s hospital at Alton, Sunday, October 22, 1922, at 12:20 am, at the age of 79 years, 7 mos and 5 days, after a long illness. Mrs. Vaughn was the daughter of George and Jane (Thompson) Ely, natives of New Jersey. Mrs. Vaughn was born in Jersey County and lived all her life in this county. She was united in marriage to Williamson Vaughn, and to this union was born 1 daughter, Mrs. Dora Vaughn Henry, now deceased. Mrs. Vaughn was 1 of seven children, 3 of whom are living. Mrs. Letitia Davison, Mrs. Libbie Davison and Mrs. Harriet Shephard. During the past 35 years of her life she made her home with her sister, Mrs. Clarence Davison. Mrs. Vaughn became ill about a month ago and was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton where daily visits were made to her bedside by various members of her family. Her niece, Mrs. Fannie Brand, had been with her constantly since it became apparent that her illness was fatal. Mrs. Vaughn was of a sweet and loving disposition, and bore all her sufferings with patience and resignation. Funeral services will be held from the Presbyterian church, Tuesday, October 24, at 2 pm, Rev. Harrold S. Farrill officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove.
VAUGHN. Died 25-05-1989. Antoinette “Nettie” Vaughn, 94, of Godfrey died at 9 pm May 25, 1989 at Greenwood Manor Nursing Home in Jerseyville. Mrs. Vaughn was born on May 23, 1895 in Jersey County to the late Frederick Goetten and Josephine Beiermann. She was married to Frank Vaughn of Jerseyville, at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Fieldon. He preceded her in death, November 13, 1951. Mrs. Vaughn was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic church in Jerseyville. Survivors include 4 sons, Fred Vaughn of Jerseyville, Louis Vaughn of Godfrey, Lawrence Vaughn of St. Louis and Robert Vaughn of East Alton; 2 Daughters, Pauline Kuebrich Gross and Bernice Corzine of Godfrey, and 11 grandchildren. Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. A funeral mass was held on Monday, May 29, at 10 am in St. Francis Xavier church with Fr Henry Schmidt officiating. Burial was at St. Francis cemetery. Memorials may be sent for masses and to the St. Francis school.
VAUGHN. Mrs. Ellen Vaughn, 78 years, a resident of Fidelity township for over fifty years, died at her home five miles east of Jerseyville, Sunday evening at 5:10 oclock. Mrs. Vaughn suffered a severe attack of pneumonia about two months ago and never fully recovered from the effects of the illness. The deceased was the daughter of Patrick and Mary Sheridan Kain and was born in Ireland. She was united in marriage to Patrick Vaughn, who preced3d her in death thirty-four years ago. She is survived by five sons, Jeremiah, John, Thomas, Frank and James, all of whom reside near Jerseyville. Funeral services were held yesterday morning (Wednesday) at 9:30 oclock from St. Francis Xaviers church of which the deceased was a devout member. Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Rev. Father John J. Clancy. Interment was in St. Francis Xaviers Cemetery.
VAUGHN. Died 13-11-1951. Frank E. Vaughn, a farmer residing east of Jerseyville, died at 8:30 am Tuesday, November 13 at his home following an illness of several weeks duration. The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Vaughn and was born in Jersey County, March 8, 1888. His age at the time of death was 63 years, 8 months, and 5 days. Mr Vaughn is survived by his wife, Mrs. Antionette B. Vaughn; 2 daughters, Mrs. Joseph Kuebrich of Jerseyville and Mrs. George Corzine of East Alton; 4 sons, Fred and Robert Vaughn of Jerseyville, Louis Vaughn of Alton and Lawrence Vaughn of Godfrey; and 4 brothers, Jerry, John, Thomas and James Vaughn all of Jerseyville. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, until Friday am. Funeral services were held at 9:30 am, November 16 at St. Francis Xavier church with Rev. Father Eugene Griffin celebrant of the requiem mass. Interment was in St. Francis cemetery.
VAUGHAN. Died 04-1918. Harry Vaughan, 32, died at home of his mother, Mrs. Ellen Vaughan 5 miles east of Jerseyville. The funeral was from St. Francis church, Rev. J. J. Clancy officiating, with burial in Oak Grove cemetery.
VAUGHN. Died 18 03-1888. Mrs. Hester Vaughn died at Shipman, March 18. The funeral was from Lebanon church, Rev. Marsh officiating. She was widow of John Vaughn, an old settler of Jersey County. She was 80 years old and had resided in this vicinity all her life.
VAUGHN. Died-02-1885. James F. Vaughn, 23, died. He was from Fidelity, and engaged to Altha Post.
VAUGHN. Died 1967. Jerry Vaughn, 88, the last surviving member of his family, died at 4:18 am at the Jersey Community hospital where he had been a patient for 14 days. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The rosary was recited at 8 pm Tuesday evening. Requiem mass was celebrated at 9:30 Wednesday am at St. Francis Xavier church with Rev. Francis lee officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr Vaughn, a son of the late Michael and Ellen (Kane) Vaughn, was born in Jersey County, and had lived in the community all of his life, he was 88 years, 22 days, at the time of death. The Vaughn family lived on a farm east of Jerseyville for many years. His survivors are nieces and nephews.
VAUGHN. Died 1904. Michael Vaughn, 23, died at his home 5 1/2 east of Jerseyville, from an accident while hauling fodder. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Fr Lee from St. Francis.
VAWTER. Born 1899. Former Jersey County resident George Roy Vawter, Sr., 87, of Winfield, Missouri died at 6:34 am Monday, January 6, 1986, at the Lincoln County Memorial Hospital in Troy, Missouri following a lengthy illness. He served as minister of various churches from 1932-1972. From 1935-1938 he pastored the Union Forest church in Jersey County. A Navy veteran, born in Shannon County, Missouri, he was the son of the Late Oliver Wesley and Effie May (Lowe) Vawter. He married the former Beulah A. Stamps, who survives. Surviving in addition to his wife are 2 Sons, Theadore E. Vawter of Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania and George R. Vawter Jr. of Tampa, Florida; 2 daughters, Ruby A. McCory of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Lavaun O. Vawter of Marina Del Rey, California; 8 grandchildren; and 1 Sister, Hazel Mayfield of Scott City, Missouri. Visitation will continue on Friday from 11 am until time of services at 1 pm at the Union Forest church. Burial will be in White cemetery, west of Jerseyville.
VETTER. Gerald “Shorty” Vetter, 55, of Alton, died at 7:16 am Tuesday, April 14, 1987, at St. Joseph’s hospital Alton. Vetter was a construction worker with Local 218 and served in the US Army during the Korean conflict. He was born in Kampsville, the son of the Late Orlando and Mae (Page)Vetter. On December 6, 1958, in Brighton, he married the former Florence Patterson, who survives. Also surviving, are three Daughters, Laurie Beavers of Hartford, Carol Slaton of East Alton and Anita Vetter of Alton; 2 sons, Sgt. Dennisvetter of Kemper, Texas, and Ralphvetter of Plano, Texas; 3 grandchildren and 3 sisters, Thelma Churchman of Brighton, and Lucille Richter and Shirley Cloninger, both of Hardin. Visitation will be from 5-9 pm Thursday at Warner-Targhetta Funeral Home in Brighton. Services will be conducted there at 10 am Friday with the Rev. Edward Domme officiating. Burial will be at Bethany cemetery. In Godfrey. The Alton VFW will conduct military rites. Mass are preferred for memorials.
VETTER. Died 05-1973. Funeral services were held in Kampsville for Harry J.Vetter, 23, who was pronounced dead on arrival at the Calhoun Medical center in Hardin following a car accident at 12:30 am, Tuesday about 1 1/4 miles west of Route 100 near the Joe Sevier home. Dennis R. Hull, 26 of Kampsville, who was seriously injured, was taken to Alton. According to state police report the car went out of control on a curve, overturned and burned both occupants were thrown from the vehicle. He was born in Carrollton on December 24, 1949 the son of Bernard H. and Evelyn (Becker) Vetter. A veteran of Vietnam, Mr.Vetter was employed by Rose Barge Lines. Surviving are his parents; 4 brothers, all of Kampsville; and 6 sisters, including Mrs. Fred Gilman of Fieldon.
VETTER. Died 09-10-1986. Olin J. “Pappy” Vetter, 72, of Alton, died at 1:20 Thursday, October 9, 1986, at his residence, after a short illness. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late John and Rose (Curtiss) Vetter. He was an operator in the brass mill at Olin Corp. for 34 years, retiring in 1973. Surviving, are his wife, the former Louise Krueger; 4 Daughters, Joann Cole and Dixie Hammock, both of Alton, Olinda Frieman of Meadowbrook and Rollynda Freeman of Zeigler, Illinois; 8 grandchildren; 10 g-grandchildren; 2 Sisters Ruby Kremer of Milton and June Squier of Carthage; and 4 Brothers, Seibert Vetter of East Alton, Audrey and Floyd Vetter, both of Carrollton, and Tunney Vetter of Pleasant Hill. Graveside services were conducted at the church cemetery by the Kampsville American Legion Post. He was pronounced dead on arrival February ?? at Jersey Community hospital. Born August 9, 1917 in Calhoun County, he was the son of Orlando John and Surelda (Page) Vetter. He was a veteran of WW II and was service station operator. Surviving are his wife, the former Minnie – – – whom he married November 6, 1945; a daughter Virginia Becker of Dow; a son, ?? of Godfrey; 6 grandchildren; 3 sisters Thelma Churchman of Brighton and Lucille Richter, and Shirley Cloninger, both of Hardin; and 3 brothers, Harison of – – – Edward of Kampsville and Gerald of – – -.
VEITH. Died 03-1884. Dr. James B. Veitch (Veith), whose funeral was from the Methodist church at Grafton, Rev. Cole officiating, was buried with Masonic honors by Grafton Lodge. Dr. Veith was born in Kent County, England, October 23, 1816. He moved to the US in 1836, and had lived in Jersey County 46 years. He married Matilda McDow. 2 sons and 1 daughter from Chicago, and 1 daughter from Duquoin attended the funeral.
VINNEDGE. Died 05-11-1981. Funeral services were held for Estelle S. Vinnedge November 5 at the Arm Bruster Funeral Home in St. Louis. Mrs. Vinnedge died following a fall at her home that caused a broken hip. She was hospitalized for several weeks and had been moved to the Chastains Nursing Home where her Sister, Carey Brock, is a resident. She was born in Fieldon in 1892, the daughter of Sigel and Sophia Schaaf. She went to school in Grafton and later worked in St. Louis as a milliner. In 1923, she married Charles A. Vinnedge who was secretary of the Terminal Railroad Association. Her parents, husband, sister, Anna Bienvenue, and brother Charles L. Schaaf, preceded her in death. Survivors include 1 sister, 2 nieces, a nephew, grandnieces and grandnephews.
VINSON. Died 08-08-1886. Miss Anna Vinson, 20, died August 8, 1886, at her home, from the results of scarlet fever. She had taught 1 term of school and she was the daughter of John W. and Mary L. Vinson, born in Jersey County September 10, 1886. Funeral was held from her home and at the Presbyterian church. Pall bearers were: Will Richards, Harry Cory, Harry Daniels, Al Newton, Chas Strong, Chas Jackson, Harry Pogue.
VINSON. Died 28-10-1984. Charles Vinson, 82, of Sperry, Oklahoma, died at 7 am Sunday October 28. The Jersey County native was born May 23, 1902 to the late Fred and Lena (Blasa) Vinson and was a farmer. His wife, the former Mildred Price died February 9, 1974. He is survived by 2 sons Jackie, of Godfrey, and John of Dow; 1 daughter, Doris Hutchcraft, of Sperry, Oklahoma.; 3 sisters, Cora Cardis and Helen Krewinghause of Godfrey and Alberta Muehleman of Alton; 13 grandchildren, and 7 g-grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 1 pm October 31 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, by the Rev. Jim Endsley with burial in Valhalla Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Moosehaven. He was a lifetime member of the Jerseyville Moose. Visitation is from 5-9 pm Tuesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville.

Born June 17, 1903 in Rosedale township, she was the daughter of the late William and Delia (Ballard) Levi. Her husband, Robert Vinson, preceded her in death. She is survived by 1 son, George Robert Vinson of Granite City; a foster Son, Larry Ray Phelps of Madison; 3 grandchildren; 1 brother, William Levi of Grafton; and 3 sisters, Mrs. Ruth Schaaf and Mrs. Nellie Bohannon of Jerseyville and Mrs. Elizabeth Hooper of Grafton.
VINSON. Died 28-12-1980. Mrs. Artha F. Vinson, 74, of Alton, died December 28, at her home. Visitation was held from 3-9 pm Tuesday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton and where services were conducted at 1:30 pm Wednesday by the Rev. Norton Richardson. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Park. She was born January 23, 1906 in Jerseyville, a daughter of the late James and Helen Long. Her husband, William L. Vinson died January 16, 1972. She is survived by 3 grand children and 7 g-grandchildren; and 1 sister Nora Moore of Fidelity. She was preceded in death by a son Darrell Vinson. The Edwards St Assembly of God church building fund has been named as a memorial.
VINSON. Buried 1918. J. W. Vinson, 78, life long resident of Jersey County and prominent pioneers of little Jersey died at home on Pleasant St. Born April 22, 1839 on a farm in that part of Greene County that now is Jersey County. At the age of 12, he was thrown upon his own resources for a livelihood. His opportunities were limited, but he set bravely to work, recognizing that the first duty he owed to himself was to secure an education. He attended public school, and at 16 obtained a first grade teacher’s certificate. From this time until he was 24 he taught in country schools of the county. At the same time he continued his studies, principally in private but at intervals he attended Shurtleff College. Owing to his thorough training and experience Mr. Vinson became a firm friend of the public school system. For 14 consecutive years he was a member of the Board of Education of Jerseyville, and it was in part through his influence that the schools of that place have been advanced to their present high position. For 20 consecutive years he was identified with the educational interests, serving as a member of the school board, at times being the president of same. He was a member of the first city school board that employed the late Prof. J. Pike and organized our system. In 1864 he was head of Jerseyville Flouring Mills, agent of several insurance companies, special agent and adjuster for Lancashire Insurance Company, from 1884-1892. Since 1892 he has been with the Trader’sInsurance Company Of Chicago, his field being Missouri and Southern Illinois. He was a Mason for 30 years. Married in Springfield, September 12, 1861 to Mary Starkweather. Leaves widow and 4 daughters: Mrs. Lulu Vinson Frazier of Venice, California, Mrs. Webster Alderson of Los Angeles, California, Mrs. George D. Pogue of St. Louis, Missouri and Mrs. Branch Station of Ashland, Kentucky. Funeral from Presbyterian church by Rev. Neeley. Masonic services conducted at church, by Jerseyville Lodge No. 394 AF & AM. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery.
VINSON. Died 07-03-1975. John Henry Vinson, 86, a farmer who resided on Rural Route 1, Dow, died at 7 pm on March 7 at St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton. Final services were held Monday afternoon, March 10, at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, with interment in Fieldon cemetery. The Rev. William Bohannon officiated. The family designated the heart fund as a memorial. He was born December 15, 1888 in Jersey County, a son of George and Alice (Cope) Vinson. His wife the former Clara Engle, died in June of 1938. He is survived by 4 daughters, Mrs. Alice Plummer, Mrs. Clarence (Mildred) Auston and Mrs. Leonard (Reta) Wallice of Grafton and Mrs. Willard (Thelma) Marshall of Jerseyville; 7 grandchildren; 15 g-grandchildren; 2 g-g-grandchildren; and a brother Lloyd Vinson of Dow. His wife and several brothers and sisters preceded him in death.
VINSON. Died 08-08-1977. Services for Mrs. Lena Vinson, 93, were conducted on August 10 from Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, with Rev. R. E. George officiating. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park. Her death occurred at 1 pm on August 8 at Garnet’s Chateau, Jerseyville. She was born March 14, 1884 in Jerseyville, a daughter of Charles and Christina (Hooper) Blasa. Her husband, Fred Vinson, died in February 1937. Her survivors include 1 son, Charles Vinson of Dow; 3 daughters, Mrs. Cora Kardis, Godfrey, Mrs. Helen Krewinghaus, Sedalia , Missouri and Mrs. Jacob (Alberta) Muehleman, Alton; 8 grandchildren; 26 g-grandchildren; 2 g-g-grandchildren. Her husband, 1 daughter, 1 sister and 1 brother preceded her in death.
VINSON. Died 13-01-1976. Lloyd Vinson, 84, died at 6:30 pm on January 13 at the Jerseyville care center where he had resided for 1 & 1/2 years. A farmer, he was born on December 12, 1891 in Illinois, a son of George and Alice (Cope) Vinson. His wife was the late Edith (Engel) Vinson. His only survivors are nieces and nephews including Heather Rudolph and Rita Wallace of Rural Route 1 Grafton who are g-nieces. Final rites will be conducted at 1:30 pm on January 16 from Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, with Rev. John Sims of the Bethell Methodist church officiating. Interment will be in Valhalla Memorial Park. Friends may call at Jacoby Funeral Home after 4 pm Thursday January 15, the American Cancer fund has been designated as a memorial.

Funeral services were conducted February 12 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, for Mrs. Mildred Irene Vinson, 70, who died at 2:55 pm on February 9 at her home on Rural Route 1 Dow. Rev. Arthur Dresbach officiated. Interment was in Valhalla Memorial Park. She was born March 19, 1903 in Jersey County the daughter of Marion R. and Zetta May (Slaten) Price. Her survivors include her husband, Charles Vinson; 1 daughter, Mrs. Billy (Doris) Hutchcraft of Tulsa, Oklahoma; 2 sons, Jackie Vinson of Godfrey and John Vinson of Dow; 12 grandchildren; 1 sister, Mrs. Amos Coffman of Dallas, Texas; 2 brothers, Richard Price of Dow and Ralph Price of Jerseyville. Her parents, a brother and a sister preceded her in death. Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
VINSON. Died 17-01-1954. Mrs. Nona B. Vinson, 71 years, 8 months, and 14 day, died at 5:55 pm Sunday afternoon, January 17, at the home of her son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. Leo Jones in Alton where she has resided since the death of her husband 6 years ago. She had been bedfast since last August. Mrs. Vinson was born in Jersey County, May 3 1882, a daughter of the late David and Elizabeth (Hancock) Worthey. She was the widow of George (son) Vinson, and for many years the family had lived in the Nutwood vicinity. Surviving Mrs. Vinson are: her daughter Mrs. Jones; 1 son William L. Vinson of Godfrey, Rural Route 1; 3 grandchildren; 2 g-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Roy Worthey of Los Angeles, California, Leslie Worthey of Eldorado, Illinois and Newell Worthey of Quincy; and 1 sister, Mrs. Russell Hutchinson of Jerseyville. Friends call at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Services were held at the Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon, January 20, at 2 pm. Rev. Clarence E. Gorman of Wood River and Rev. Harry Frazer of Jerseyville officiated and interment was in Rosedale cemetery.
VINYARD. Died 25-01-1981. The funeral of Leonard F. Vinyard, 50, of 409 McGill St., Jerseyville will be held at 1:30 pm Tuesday at the Church of Christ with the Rev. Boyd Goodson officiating. Burial will be in the Carrollton city cemetery. He died at 2:33 pm January 25 at Greenwood Manor Nursing Home. Born in Carrollton, he was a son of Archie and Nora (Kane) Vinyard. His survivors are his wife, the former Mary Stocks; father; 4 brothers, William, Independence, Missouri, Thomas, Carrollton, Earl, Eldred and Mike, Hogansville, Georgia; 2 sisters Rosella Kraushaar and Melba Isringhausen of Jerseyville. Visitation from 4-9 pm Monday at Jacoby Funeral Home.
VINYARD. Died 07-03-1986. Mary F. Vinyard, 70, of Jerseyville, died March 7 at St. Luke’s west in St. Louis County. She was born November 15, 1915, to the Late Robert and Anna (Whitlock) Stocks. She married Leonard F. Vinyard, and he died January 25, 1981. Survivors include her brother, Robert Stocks of Jerseyville. Visitation was March 10 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The funeral was March 10 at the Funeral Home with Charles Reiser officiating. Burial was in Carrollton city cemetery.
VIRDEN. Died 1915. Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Virden passed away at St. Louis Saturday at an age of 76 years, 6 months, and 11 days. She was a daughter of Rev. Henry Newberry, a Baptist minister, and born in Jersey County September 16, 1838. In December 1857 she married Wm. H. Briggs, 1 daughter, Clara, being born to this union who married Henry Derby and preceded her mother in death. After being a widow for 10 years, the subject of this sketch Married Dr. R. D. Farlen in 1877. He departed this life in 1884. Eight years later the widow married Samuel Virden of St. Louis who died April 1900. Since that time the venerable lady made her home with her sister in Chicago, Mrs. Harriet Virden and her sister in St. Louis, Mrs. George Dutton. The body was taken to Jerseyville for burial and Tuesday at 2:30 pm Rev. E. T. Carroll conducted services at the Methodist church. She is survived by the above mentioned 2 sisters, 1 brother, Sam Newberry of Litchfield and one grandchild.
VOILES. Died 19-04-1941. William G. Voiles, 79, died here this am at the home of his son, Florus Voiles, following a long period of ill health. He had been bed fast for about 2 weeks. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 pm at Simpson Funeral Home, the Rev. Reiss officiating. Burial will be in the Russell cemetery north of Eldred. Voiles was born January 1, 1862 in Greene County Tennessee, the son of Philip and Charity Voiles. He came to Greene County at age of 7, and spent many years in the western part of the county. He and Miss Gussie Spencer were married January 1 1885. She died in December 1913. The family moved to Wyandotte, Oklahoma in 1907. Surviving him are 4 children, Florus of this city ; Lynn, Miss Leoline, Mrs. Leonice Morgan, Wyandotte, Oklahoma, also a twin brothers, John of Guyman Oklahoma., 9 grandchildren and 2 g-grandchildren.
VOLLMER. Died 20-05-1990. Albert L. Vollmer, 82, died at 10 am Sunday, May 20, 1990, at Jersey Care Center in Jerseyville, after a lengthy illness. He was a lifetime farmer, retiring in 1984. Born in Elsah, he was the son of the Late August and Josephine (Federle) Vollmer. On October 20, 1927, in Jacksonville, he married the former Lillie Margaret St. Peters. She died June 15, 1984. Surviving are a daughter, Fay Cornelius of Dow; 2 grandsons; 3 g-grandsons; and a sister, Christine Trager of Godfrey. 4 brothers, Joe, August Jr., David and William Vollmer, preceded him in death. Visitation is from 5-9 pm Tuesday with services at 10:30 am Wednesday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville.. The Rev. Dorothy Fellhauser will officiate. Burial is in Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Memorials may be given to Bethel United Methodist church of Dow or Jersey Care Center.
VOLLMER. Died 1984. Lillie M. Vollmer, 75, of Godfrey, died unexpectedly at 5:07 pm Friday at her residence. Born in Jersey County, daughter of the late Oliver and Julia M. (Berger) St. Peters, she married Albert L. Vollmer, who survives. Also surviving, are 1 Daughter, Faye Cornelius of Dow; 2 grandsons; and 1 g-grandson. Visitation will be from 4-9 pm Sunday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be conducted at 1:30 pm Monday with Rev. R. E. George officiating. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Memorials may be sent to the First United Methodist church of Jerseyville, where she was a member.
VOORHEES. Died 03-1884. Mrs. Maria Voorhees died at the residence of her son-in-law, T. F. Remer. Born in Monmouth County New Jersey February 27, 1812 and married P. P. Voorhees in May 1839. They came to Jersey County and settled on a farm 5 miles south of town. The couple had 9 children. 5 girls and 4 boys. Moved to Jerseyville in 1865. Funeral was from Presbyterian church.
VOORHEES. Former Jerseyville resident Clara E. Voorhees, 98, died at 10:52 pm Tuesday, April 7, 1992, at Champaign County Nursing Home in Urbana. She was a licensed practical nurse, taught school in Jersey County and was the owner/operator of a student rooming house in Urbana. Born in Greene County March 18, 1893, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Maria (Reynolds) Armstrong. She married Otis C. Voorhees on January 27, 1917, in Jerseyville, and he died in January 1938. Surviving are 3 children, Jane Gothard of Dahinda, Abbie Olson of Minnetonka, Minnesota, and Perry Voorhees of Vaiden, Mississippi; 12 grandchildren; 12 g-grandchildren; and 1 g-g-grandchild. Preceding her in death were a son, 2 brothers and 3 sisters. Graveside services are at 4 pm Friday at Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville with the Rev. Bruce Olson officiating. Renner-Wikoff Chapel of Urbana is in charge of arrangements.
VOORHEES. Died 18-09-1969. Funeral services were held in St. Paul’s Methodist church in Brighton Saturday afternoon for Donald H. Voorhees, Sr., of Rural Route 1, Brighton, whose unexpected death occurred on Thursday. Rev. Donald Riley, pastor of the church, officiated and the body was brought to Jerseyville for interment in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation hours were held at the Warner Funeral Home in Brighton. Mr Voorhees collapsed and died at 9:10 Thursday am in a restaurant in Brighton. He was born April 6, 1898 in Jersey County, and was a retired farmer and truck driver. Surviving him are his wife Mrs. Hattie Armstrong Voorhees, 4 sons, Donald, Jr., of Brighton, Eugene and Herschel of Godfrey, and Thomas of Rosewood Heights, 1 daughter, Mrs. Shirley Goss of Godfrey, and 1 sister, Mrs. Harold Wainwright of Jerseyville, a son, Clifford preceded him in death. Mr. Voorhees is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 10 g-grandchildren.
VOORHEES. Ellen Updike, daughter of Theodore and Ellen Updike was born in Odenburg, Mercer County New Jersey, June 29, 1984. At age of 10 came to Jerseyville with parents. Settled 3 miles north of Jerseyville. She married December 25, 1866 to Chas. A. Voorhees. They were parents of 4 daughters, Stella died August 28, 1885 at the age of 18 years. Grace and Pearl at home and Mrs. Ray Emerson of Rochester, New York. In 1892 they moved to Springfield, then to Chicago.
VOORHEES. Died 27-05-1974. Mrs. Hattie A. Voorhees, 81, of Rural Route 1, Brighton died at 2 am May 27 at Barnes hospital in St. Louis where she had been a patient for 6 weeks. Prior to that she had been hospitalized for 3 weeks in St. Anthony’s hospital in Alton. She was born April 18, 1893 in Fidelity, a daughter of Harry and Susan (Young) Armstrong. During her early life she had taught school and had lived south of Brighton since 1937. Her Husband, Donald H. Voorhees, Sr. died September 18, 1969, and a son Clifford, also preceded her in death. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Shirley Goss of Godfrey; 4 sons, Donald, Jr., of Brighton, Eugene and Herschel Voorhees of Godfrey and Thomas Voorhees of Rosewood Heights; 24 grandchildren; 13 g-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mrs. Everett Reed of Fidelity and Evelyn Armstrong of Jerseyville, 1 brother, Harry Armstrong of Cleveland Ohio. Mrs. Voorhees was a member of St. Paul’s Methodist church where services will be conducted by the Rev. Richard Keim at 2 pm today (May 30). Interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation was held at Warner Funeral Home in Medora.
VOORHEES. Died 1918. Henry Vroom, 85, was born in New Jersey October 17, 1833. The family came to Fulton County Illinois, when he was quite young, later coming to Jersey County about 1858 where he married Matilda Bacon in 1861. They lived on a farm in Paradise area, moved to a farm near Virden, where they stayed a year. They then came to Jerseyville and lived in property now owned by Robert Wylder. He moved to a farm 8 miles east of Jerseyville in 1870, living there 39 years. He was Supervisor of Fidelity Township several years. Children are M. B. Voorhees, Mrs. Fannie V. Henkel, H. V. Voorhees, Jr., Mrs. Chas B. Rae of Alton. A daughter Mrs. Marcus Ryan, died 4 years ago.
VOORHEES. John B. Voorhees, 66, died at his home 4 miles south of this city Saturday, October 27, 1906, of heart trouble. The funeral was from his residence, Rev. W. W. Hicks officiating, burial in Oak Grove. He was one of the early settlers of Jersey County. He leaves 1 son and 2 daughters.
VOORHEES. Died 20-09-1903. John D. Voorhees, 85, died September 20, 1903. He was born in Somerville, New Jersey, moved to Illinois in 1859, married Jane McBride October 24, 1863. They had 3 children, 2 died and 1 daughter is living. Mr Voorhees had been a farmer, until kicked by a horse, causing him to retire and move to Jerseyville. He was loved and trusted by all, and was fond of reading. Rev. Nash officiated at the funeral.
VOORHEES. Died 04-1926. Mrs. Matilda Voorhees, 85, died at her home on S. Lafayette St. in Jerseyville. She was the widow of Harry Voorhees. They were early settlers of Fidelity township. She leaves 2 sons; Murray B. Voorhees and Harry Voorhees, of Jerseyville; 1 daughter Mrs. Fannie Henkle also of Jerseyville. The funeral was from the home with Rev. O. B. Kinsey officiating, burial in Oak Grove mausoleum.
VOORHEES. Died 07-1942. Murray Voorhees, 22, of Jerseyville, who was in the Coast Guard, was killed when his car figured in a collision with a truck on the North Hard Road (267) near Macoupin fill.
VOORHEES. Died 27-11-1965. Richard H. Voorhees, retired farmer and a president of the Jersey County Farm Bureau for a quarter of a century, died Saturday November 27, at 12:25 am at the Jersey Community hospital where he had been a patient for 9 days. Visitation hours were at the Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, and later at the First United Presbyterian church where final rites were held Monday afternoon, November 29, at 2 pm. Rev. M. Edwards Breed, pastor of the church, officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr Voorhees, a son of the late Murray and Jane (Rich) Voorhees, was born in Jersey County March 12, 1894, and his age at the time of death was 81 years, 8 months, and 15 days. His father was a former Mayor of Jerseyville. Prior to his retirement Mr. Voorhees was engaged in farming in Jersey County. He was a charter member of the Jersey County Farm Bureau and had served on the auditing board of the Illinois Agriculture Association. In addition to his farm activities he was active in civic, fraternal and church affairs. Mr Voorhees was a member of the AF & AM, 394, Eastern Star Chapter and Modern Woodman of America, and had served on the Board of Education of the Jersey Township High School. He was an elder of the Presbyterian church of which he was a member and had also served as a trustee of the church. Surviving are : his wife, Mrs. Lenore Voorhees, 406 S. Lafayette, 2 daughters, Mrs. Herbert W. Gubser and Mrs. Aron Cope of this city; 6 grandchildren and 3 g-grandsons.
VOORHEES. Died 01-1976. Miss Stella B. Voorhees, 86, of 200 Bar Ave., Jerseyville, died at 8:05 pm Thursday at Jerseyville Care Center. A native of Nebraska, she is survived by 2 sisters, Mrs. Tillie B. Parsell of Jerseyville and Mrs. Helen V. Egelhoff of St. Louis; nieces and nephews. Services will be conducted at 1:30 pm Sunday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, with Rev. M. Edwards Breed, past of the First Presbyterian church, where she was a member, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call after 4 pm Saturday at the Funeral Home.
VOORHEES. Died 08-1928. Thelma Ione Voorhees, 17, was born in Jersey County December, 1911, a daughter of Richard and Nina (Nail) Voorhees. She leaves 2 sisters, Doris and Pauline; 1 brother Murray. Rev. H. S. Farrill officiated, with burial in Oak Grove.
VOSBURG. Died 08-08-1889. George C. vosburg, 27, born at Sennecca Falls, New York March 31, 1862 and came with parents to St. Louis in 1880. He married Mary L. Schwarz in 1886. He worked at Famous Clothing. Was a member of Union Methodist church and WMCA of St. Louis. He died at the home of his mother-in-law, Catherine Schwarz, August 8, the funeral was from that home on August 9. Rev. leeper officiated and the pall bearers were: W. Richards, W. McClure, Jacob Wiseman, Charles Borger, Harry Daniels and Geo. One.
