PACE. 6 April 1987: Jerseyville – Troy L. Pace 73, of Route 3, died at 11:25 am Sunday, April 5 1987 at St. Anthony’s hospital in Alton. He was a self employed mechanic, born in Atlas, Ark., son of the late Albert F. and Nora Wyres Pace. He married the former Mary Lucille Ridenour in Alton on 7 October 1933. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Marion Westfall of Otterville and Sharon Hageman of Brighton; three sons, Albert and Steven, both of Otterville and Troy Pace, Jr. of Grafton; two sisters, Hilda Acquavivia and Barbara Downing, both of Glen Carbon; one brother, Onic Pace of St. Louis; 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 pm today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville and until noon Tuesday when they will move to the Otterville Baptist church, for services at 2 pm with the Rev. Joy Settles officiating. Burial will be in the Noble cemetery, Otterville. The Otterville Baptist church where he was a member, has been suggested as a memorial.
PACE. Otterville – Mary Lucille Pace, 78, died at 9:49 pm Thursday 10 November 1994 at her home. Born July 18 1916, in Otter Creek township, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Neva Jewel (Bethel) Ridenour. A homemaker, she married Troy L. Pace Sr. 7 October 1933 in Alton. He died 5 April 1987. Surviving are a daughter and son-in law Sharon L. and Robert L. Hagerman of Alton; three sons and daughters-in-law Troy L. Pace and Lavena M. Pace Jr. of Grafton, Albert L. and Charlene A. Pace of Otterville and Steven L. and Becky A. Pace of Alton; 19 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; three sisters, Irma McCoy of Godfrey, Joyce Moran of Granite City and Madge Reynolds of Grafton; and two Brothers, Wayne Ridenour of Grafton and Keith Ridenour of Godfrey. She was preceded in death by a daughter and Son-in-law, Marion Lucille and Matthew Westfall; a grandson, Randy Joe Westfall and a Granddaughter, Christie Westfall. Visitation will be from 11 am Monday until service time at 1:30 pm at Otterville Baptist church. The Rev. Joy Settles will officiate. Burial will be in Noble cemetery in Otterville. Memorials may be made to Otterville Baptist church, where she was a member, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital of Memphis, Tenn. Jacoby Funeral Home of Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements.
PADDOCK. Grafton – Iva May “Paddy” Paddock, 85, was pronounced dead at 10:15 am Friday, March 15, 1991 at her residence. Born in Bayard, Kan., she was the daughter of the late Simon Perry and Silva Dell (Tracey) Huffman. She and George Lewis Paddock were married on July 21, 1930, in Erie, Kansas. He died on 19 July 1986. Surviving are two sons, Rex Lewis and Dex Lance Paddock, both of Grafton; a granddaughter; four sisters, Mamie Paddock of Kincaid, Kan., Amie Lela Monroe of Pulaski, Virginia; Juanita Pearl Holderman of Parker, Kan., and Rneil June Koger of Adrian, MO. Four brothers preceded her in death. Visitation is from 3 to 7 pm today at Jacoby-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are at 10 am Monday. The Rev. Dale Wilfong will officiate. Burial is in Scenic Hill cemetery at Grafton. Memorials may be given to Grafton Senior Citizens.
PAGE. Mrs. Bertha Page, 55, widow of W. F. Page of Kansas City, Missouri, formerly of Alton, died Sunday at 4 am in general hospital, Kansas City following an illness of several months. The body will be brought to the home of Mr. page’s brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. William Boyd, in Godfrey, to remain until time of the funeral. Rites will be conducted at 3 pm Thursday in Evangelical church, Jerseyville. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery, Jerseyville. Mrs. Page was a member of Eastern Star lodge and the burial ritual of the Lodge will be carried out at the church and at the grave. Friends may call at the Boyd residence after 4 pm Tuesday. Mrs. Page was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Adolph Ufer, and Mrs. Ufer. She was married in 1920 to Fred E. Page and following his death in 1935, she was married to W. F. Page, a brother of her former husband. During her marriage to Fred Page, she and her husband operated a grocery store in Grafton. Before moving to Kansas City she had resided in Alton. Surviving in addition to her husband and mother, are a sister, Mrs. Clara Walsh of Peoria, and two brothers, Arthur Ufer, Batchtown, Calhoun County, and Herman of Portland, Ore.
PAGE. Prairie State 5 September 1851: In Jerseyville on Friday 29th last, Benjamin J. Page, aged 27 years died. Much respected in the community. He was engaged to be married the first of next month, and his loss falls with crushing weight upon her who was to have been his happy bride. His remains were followed to the grave by relatives, friends and members of orders to which he belonged.
PALMER. Harriet Sarah – Daughter of Wm. and Mary Barton Palmer, born at Kemper 6 April 1836. Wed Milo Stowe of Morrison, Illinois. 3 children: William and Clark and Milo Erwin of Springfield. Granddaughters: Nellie Claire, Eva Eleanor, Martha Mildred and Mary Ellen Stowe, one sister, Martha J. Palmer.
PALMER. 16-sep 1980: Visitation for Cleon C. Palmer, 85, of 405 W. Arch St., Jerseyville will be held from noon Wednesday at Gubser Funeral Home until the time of services at 2 pm. The Revs. R. E. George and James Pepper will officiate and burial will be in the Newbern cemetery. His death occurred at 11:35 pm 14 September at Garnet’s Chateau where he had resided for three months. The retired farmer was born 13 August 1895 near Dow, a son of the late James and Lora Giberson Palmer and was a World War I Navy veteran. His survivors are his wife, the former Beulah Wiegand whom he married 1 June 1947; Stepson, Richard Kelly of Alton, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters and two stepchildren. Memorials designated are the First United Methodist church and American Cancer Society.
PALMER. October 1914: Frank Palmer died at hospital in Jacksonville, 20 years old. Body to home of parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Palmer at Newbern. Funeral at Newbern church.
PALMER. Republican Examiner. 16 December 1887: Mrs. William Barton Palmer born in Waltham, Vermont, May 19, 1797 and married to William Palmer of Weybridge, Vermont, in January 1823. They came to Illinois in 1831 and settled in Greene County near Whitehall. Experienced religion in 1831. Moved to this prairie (afterwards called Palmer’s Prairie) in 1883 and was first member of the Delaware church (Baptist) organized in 1843. It moved to Summerville. She joined Delaware Congregational church in 1870. Husband died in spring of 1873. She died at home of her daughter, Mrs. John D. Dannel. 90 years old. One child preceded her. She died of old age; a sheaf fully ripened for the master’s use. Thus had passed the last one of the sisters of this prairie. The Examiner 28 may 1879: the venerable Mrs. William Palmer, who has been a resident of this and Greene counties for nearly a half a century celebrated her 82nd birthday on the 18th at the residence of her son-in-law’s, John C. Dannel, near Kemper. Mrs. Palmer made the pilgrimage from her native state almost to Greene County, in a common two horse wagon, and it required sixty-two days to complete the journey.
PALMER. Jerseyville – Beulah Fay Palmer, 91, died at 4:45 am today November 7, 1988, at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville. She was born in Jersey County, daughter of the Late Phillip and Addie Nevius Wiegand. On June 1 1947 she married Cleon Palmer, who died 14 September 1980. She was preceded in death by a son, Sherrill Perkins; and a half brother. Visitation is noon Tuesday until time of services at 2 pm at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Revs. Can Harry and James Pepper will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery at Jerseyville.
PALMER. Jerseyville Republican. 29 March 1923: William Tracy received message announcing death of Mrs. C. J. Palmer at her home in Murrayville. She was sister of Peter Connolly and the late Mrs. Wm. Tracy. Leaves three children. Wm. Tracy, Mae Tracy and Mrs. and Mrs. Connolly and children went to Murrayville to attend the funeral. Died 00-05-1879.
PALMER. 1988: Gladys O. Palmer, 84, died at 10:10 am Tuesday, 6 September 1988 atAlton Memorial hospital. Born in Rosedale, her parents were the Late Wm. J. and Cora M. (Dabbs) Lewis. She married Edgar E. Palmer 30 January 1922 in Jerseyville. He died in October 1964. Surviving are three daughters, Eleanor Barnal of Elsah, Cora Walker of Cottage Hills and Lora Desherlia of Jerseyville; a son, Edgar E. Palmer of Dorsey; 19 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Callahan; three brothers, Ernest, Jesse, and Joseph Lewis; and a sister Mabel Winters. Visitation will be 4-8 Thursday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be conducted 11 am Friday by the Rev. John Fidakovich. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
PALMER. 30 June 1928: Miss Martha Palmer who is believed to have been the oldest native born resident of Jersey County, died at her home in Kemper Monday. 90 years old. Born 1 February 1839. During her long life Miss Palmer, who was known as “Aunt Martha” resided within a half mile of the place where she died. She was a woman of keen business capacity and for many years profitably managed large real estate holdings in the Kemper vicinity. Death was due to old age. She was a daughter of William and Mary Barton Palmer, who were among the earliest settlers of “Delaware”, a settlement in Jersey County which afterwards became known as Kemper. The parents came to Illinois in 1830. Miss Martha was the last of five children bornTo them. Nieces and nephews survive; Mrs. Laura Dodge of Jerseyville, Mrs. Georgia Kitzmiller of Medora, C. O. Dannel of Greenfield, Mrs. F. B. Leverett of Chicago, Mrs. Matie Waggoner Mallock of Los Angeles, Calif., C. A. Stowe of Highland, Illinois and Wm. E. Stowe of Medora. Funeral from Kemper Baptist church. Burial in Kemper cemetery. Rev. Farrill.
PALMER. Jerseyville Republican 30 January 1919: Mary Bernice Palmer, 8 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Palmer died at her home. Private services at the home. Rev. Joseph Jenkins. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery.
PALMER. 15 May 1958: Ernest Palmer, 83 year old retired farmer residing in the northwest part of the city of Jerseyville, died Friday evening, May 9 at nine-twenty o’clock at the Green Lawn Nursing Home in this city. Mr. Palmer had been in failing health for sometime and had been a patient at the Jersey Community Hospital before being removed to the nursing home. Friends called at the Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Final rites were held at the funeral home Monday afternoon, May 12 at two o’clock. Rev. Carl C. Moman, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. The decedent was a son of the late George L. and Mary S. Brown Palmer and was born at Morrisonville Illinois on September 23, 1874. His age at the time of death was aged eighty-three years, seven months and sixteen days. He had resided in Jersey County for many years. Mr. Palmer is survived by three sons, George of Indianapolis, Indiana, Russel of Florissant, Missouri, and Walter of St. Louis; one daughter, Mrs. Fred (Pauline) Brehm of Waggoner; two grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Effie Good of New Berlin and Mrs. P. O. Boyd of Bell Gardens, Calif.; and one half sister, Mrs. Edna Lobb of Palmyra. The death of his wife occurred 14 August 1942, and a daughter died in 1919.
PALMER. Jerseyville Republican April 1909: Mrs. Phoebe Palmer died at home in Joplin, Missouri. 85 years old. Former resident of Kemper and mother of Mrs. W. H. Birch of Jerseyville. (Second obit source not noted: Phoebe, the second daughter of Thomas and Bertha Hoffnagle, was born in Essex, New York, November 15, 1829 and died while on a visit to her daughter, Mrs. Olive Whitfield, in Joplin, Missouri. April 9, 1909. She came to Illinois about the year 1850. She was married to Elias Palmer 30 December 1857 and went to their home on a farm near Kemper, Illinois where she lived until called to her home above to which her husband had gone almost twenty years before. To this union five children were born, Arthur, who died in infancy, Helen, Olive, L. D., and Frank. She with her husband united with the Congregational church of Kemper at the time of its organization, April 12, 1870, of which she was a faithful member until the time of her death. She leaves four children, one brother, Henry Hoffnagle, one sister, Mrs. Helen Perkins, of Shopiere, Wisc. Many other relatives and a host of friends to mourn her loss. She was a devoted mother not only to her children, but to four grandchildren, two of whom god in his all wise providence called to himself. She lived to care for the remaining two with all the devotion and tenderness of a mother’s love until early manhood. She was kind and generous to all; ever ready to lend a helping hand to the suffering and bereaved as long as she had strength. She will be sadly missed by her loved ones and neighbors.
PALMER. Jerseyville Republican April 1912: Orin Palmer, pioneer resident of Jersey County, died at his home in Kemper 28 March 1912. Orin Palmer, native of Weybridge, Addison County, Vermont. Born 11 October 1832. Parents were Eliza and Thirza Palmer. When Orin was four years old, his parents came to Jersey County, making the trip overland to Cincinnati, thence by boat on Ohio and Mississippi rivers. They located on Palmers Prairie. Orin resided in Ruyle township where he was educated. Attended school at Greenfield, Illinois, married to Mary Kemper in 1858. Three children. In 1884 he married Hattie L. Sturdevant who survives. He was engaged in business in Kemper.
PANEPINTO. Congetta Mary Panepinto, 90, of Alton, died at 2:02 am Sunday 6 December 1987 at St. Anthony’s hospital in Alton following a short illness. Born in Sicily, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Carmella Colletta. In Sep. 1915 she married Joseph Panepinto in Alton and he died 13 December 1958. Surviving are three daughters, Rose Zambito of East Alton, and Mary Barone and Carmella Hazen, both of Alton; a son, Dominic Panepinto of East Alton; 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeannie Panepinto and one brother. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Tuesday at Elias-Smith Funeral Home in Alton, where a prayer service will be said at 7 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 am Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic church in Alton with the Rev. Keith Campbell as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s cemetery in Alton.
PAPE. Died 00-02-1981. The funeral of Mary Pape, 89, of 438 W. Fourth, Edwardsville, a sister of Emma Schaake of Jerseyville, was conducted Thursday afternoon at the Eden United Church of Christ with burial in Valley View cemetery. She was born in Edwardsville, daughter of the late Henry and Anna Bartels Heepke and married Henry Pape 31 August 1920; he died in 1956. She is survived by a daughter, Lucille Kriege of Edwardsville; a grandson and her sister.
PARENT. 7 June 1915: Charles Parent of Tulsa, Okla, 62 years, died while his sister, Mrs. W. L. Scott of Jerseyville was visiting him. Remains to Jerseyville. Rev. W. S. Neeley. Burial in Oak Grove. Leaves wife, one son, Lee of Tulsa, two sisters, Mrs. Scott and Mrs. James Cockrell of Elsah.
PARENT. Died 23-04-1951. Graveside rites will be held at Oak Grove cemetery Sat. morning, 28 April at ten-thirty o’clock for Mrs. Lillie Parent, 96, whose death occurred Monday, 23 April in Tulsa, Okla. Rev. M. Edwards Breed, pastor of the Presbyterian church will officiate. The body of Mrs. Parent will arrive at the Gubser Funeral Home Friday morning and friends may call at the home after noon, Friday. Mrs. Parent was the daughter of the Late David Perry and Lydia Pease Pritchett, and was born in Jersey County. For about forty years she had made her home in Tulsa. The aged woman is survived by one son, George Lee Parent of Tulsa, and one grandson, Lee Parent II, of Kansas City. She was an aunt of Mrs. C. G. Reddish, Mrs. A. M. Wiles, Supv. Gilbert Pritchett, Miss Charlotte Pritchett and Mrs. Elnora Meek of Jerseyville, Mrs. Ralph Shartel of St. Louis and Lynn Pritchett of Bethalto.
PARENT. Republican Examiner. 25 March 1881: George Parent born at Allentown, New Jersey, December 1, 1820. Married Mary Ginglen, 5 February 1846 who passed on before him, 19 February 1870. Children surviving: Mrs. James H. Cockrell of St. Louis, Charles W. Parent, and Mrs. William L. Scott of Jerseyville. Two brothers and two sisters from his father’s family of nine survive, residing in New Jersey. At age of 8, Parent left an orphan, learned a trade. Madison Lodge No. 46, IOOF at Allentown, New Jersey; afterwards to the Bordentown Lodge No. 16, from which he came by card to Jerseyville. Lodge No. 53, 14 December 1874. He fell from ladder while painting house of Mr. Perrings. Funeral from residence of son-in-law, W. L. Scott. Rev. J. W. Stark.
PARIS. Jersey County Democrat. Oct 1890: John J. Paris died in Brooklyn, New York 2 October 1890. Came here in 1855 at invitation of Sam McGill – Head Miller at McGill and Blackburn Mill. He built house on E. Arch St. Now the property of Chas Neumeyer. In 1865 along with W. B. Nevins and Henry Johnson, he purchased the McGill Mill. He bought house on East Pearl, formerly home of T. McGill. Sold out interest in mill to Goodrich and Greene. He went to Carrollton and bought Pierson Mill. From there to Independence, Missouri. Then back to Jerseyville until 1883. Then to Brooklyn, New York. Leaves widow, daughter, the wife of Mr. Smith, son Willie. Remains brought to Jerseyville. Funeral from First Presbyterian Church. Dr. Tyson.
PARISH. Springfield: Former Jerseyville resident Virginia J. Parish, 75, died at 7:15 am Wednesday, May 31, 1989, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Springfield. She was born in Jerseyville, daughter of the late John and Lucy Neal (Spencer) Hughes. Her husband, John C. Parish died in 1961. Surviving are two sons, Ronald L. Parish of Springfield and Randall L. Parish of Kansas City, MO; four grandchildren. Four brothers and four sisters preceded her in death. No visitation is scheduled. Graveside services are 10 am Friday at Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home of Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements.
PARISH. Jerseyville Republican July 1917: Mrs. J. A. Parish, 35 years old, died at her home in Grafton. Parish family came to Grafton from Springfield about a year ago. Mr. Parish is a fireman on C. P. & St. L. Funeral and burial in Kemper.
PARISH. Jerseyville Republican. 26 August 1909: Harold P. and Helen B., twin children of Mr. and Mrs. John Parish, Jr. of Jerseyville, born 26 July 1909. Harold died 18 days after birth, Helen two days after him. Kemper correspondent Medora Messenger.
PARISH. 18 July 1976: (Picture of deceased) Eldon E. (Don) Parish, Jerseyville City Commissioner, died at 11 am 4 July at Jersey Community Hospital after collapsing on our courthouse lawn at the opening of the city’s Bicentennial Ecumenical Service. Parish had just completed the march with the Mayor and other Commissioners from the city hall to the courthouse when he fell to the ground. He had mentioned to Mayor Joe Susnig that he felt fatigued when they walked about a block and a half of the route. The Mayor asked Parish if he wanted to drop out and he said he would be okay. The parade stopped a few times while the band performed and Parish completed the march. He was given aid and oxygen by persons at the service including Jerry Burger, a Physician’s Assistant, and Dr. Kenneth Beach. He was moved to the hospital and died a short time later. Parish, who retired in 1973 as City Street Superintendent, was elected Commissioner and took office in May of 1975. He was Commissioner of Streets and Alleys. He had served as Street Superintendent since 1955, being appointed during the term of Mayor Gilbert Moore under Street Commissioner Louis Gorman. Parish was born in Kemper, September 24, 1910 the son of John W. and Gertrude Barnes Parish. He married Lula Towery Parish 21 August 1930. He is survived by his wife; a Sister, Mary Grace Schappaugh of Morton and a brother, Dick Parish of St. Louis. He was preceded in death by his brother Wayne, and a sister Mrs. Mildred Elliott. Funeral services were conducted at 10 am Wednesday at the First Baptist church, Rev. Everett Chambers officiating. Burial was at Oak Grove cemetery. Masonic services were conducted at Gubser’s Funeral Home Tuesday evening.
PARISH. 12 January 1906: James Wm. Parish born may 17, 1832 in Pike County, Missouri. In 1844 moved to Delhi, Illinois. 1904 moved to Jerseyville. Died December 1, 1906, 74 years old. Baptist church at or near Newbern. Married Mrs. Mary Ann Rue 9 July 1855 at Alton, Illinois. Rev. Dr. Norton. Two children – Helen Paris, Herdman, wife of Judge Herman, William A. Parish of Alton, Illinois. His wife died 17 April 1901. On April 6, 1904 he married Mrs. Mary T. Russell. Leaves one brother, John Parish of Kemper. Step children: John Rue of Mason City, Illinois, Frank Rue of Alton, Joseph Rue of Delhi, Mrs. Mary Wychoff (Spencer) of Jerseyville. The funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church, at 2:30 o’clock Monday afternoon, Rev. W. H. Jordan officiating.
PARK. Jerseyville Republican. 22 January 1914: Dr. W. Park, over four score of years old, died Sunday morning at 11 o’clock at his home in Grafton. He was one of the oldest physicians of the state, practiced medicine in Jersey County for 45 years. Resided formerly in Fieldon and came to Grafton in 1891, enjoying a favorable acquaintance. Monday afternoon Rev. J. A. Lee conducted funeral services at the home and Tuesday morning the remains arrive in Jerseyville on the C P & St. L. and interment took place in Oak Grove cemetery under the auspices of the Jerseyville and Fieldon Lodges of the AF & AM. The aged wife and one daughter, Miss Ethel survive him.
PARK. Dec. 1897: Amanday Dayton, wife of Dr. F. W. Park, died at home in Fieldon. Daughter of Thomas and Martha Dayton of Eldred, Greene County. Educated in Carrollton. 27 May 1896 Married F. W. Park of Fieldon. Leaves husband, mother Mrs. Martha Clark, sisters, Mrs. Arthur Robley and L. Hoag; brother, John Dayton of Eldred. Joined Baptist church at age 15. Rev. Rain conducted funeral at American church. Buried in Dayton cemetery in Greene County.
PARK. Jerseyville Republican 4 August 1921: Mrs. Arthur F. Park, 53, died at her home in Fieldon. Funeral from CP church in Fieldon. Rev. Harold S. Farrill. Burial in Fieldon cemetery.

PARKS. Jerseyville Republican 20 May 1909: Dr. Frederick Wesley Parks, son of Dr. Wesley and Jerusha E. Parks, born 22 October 1866 at Fieldon and resided here until death. On March 15, 1890 graduated from Beaumont Medical College of St. Louis and began practice on 17 March 1890. Married 27 may 1895 to Amanda Dayton. One son, Ward F. Parks who survives. Wife died 14 December 1897. On 7 October 1901 he married Stella Combs who survives. He was 41 years of age. Leaves widow, son, father, Dr. Wesley Park, step mother, Mrs. Ella Park and half sister, Miss Ethel Park of Grafton. Two brothers, George of Jerseyville and Arthur of Fieldon. His mother died 17 October 1905. Member of MWA and MPL at Fieldon. Funeral from CP church. Rev. F. V. Wright, and Rev. R. Russell, Rev. Crawford of Kane and Rev. Belt of Jerseyville. PARROTT. Died 00-10-1957 Chester Lee Parrott, 37 year old farmer of the Grafton vicinity and father of four young children, was instantly killed at 11:05 o’clock Friday morning when the tractor he was operating overturned on him on his farm. In addition to his work as a farmer Parrott was also employed as a machinist at McDonald Aircraft in St. Louis. Parrott with Donald Pellikan and Ted Groppel of Grafton were engaged in putting up ensilage on the Parrott farm when the accident occurred. An inquest was conducted Friday evening by Coroner Rodney C. Jacoby. Pellikan testified they were engaged in tilling a silo on a knoll on the Parrott farm in Quarry Township. The men had just changed wagons and Parrott had taken off towards the silo down a hill. Pellikan said that after hearing a noise and not seeing Parrott going down towards the silo, he went to investigate and found the tractor upside down with Parrott pinned underneath. Pellikan reported that it was not over three minutes from the time Parrott left him until he was at the accident scene. Finding Parrott under the tractor, Pellikan called Groppel but the men were unable to lift the tractor off the victim. Groppel went for help and several men responded including members of the Grafton Volunteer Emergency Corps and Dr. Warren Hempel of Grafton. The Jacoby ambulance was also summoned but Parrott had been pronounced dead by Dr. Hempel before the ambulance arrived. A verdict of accidental death was returned by the jury which was composed of Earl E. Legate, foreman, Major C. Goede, Vincent Arnold, W. W. Legate and Paul Arnold of Grafton and Wm. M. Gowin of Jerseyville. Mr. Parrott with his wife and family had resided on the Sherman farm near Grafton for the past three years, having purchased the property. The decedent was a son of James H. and Minnie Ann Harvey Parrott and was born at Medco, Missouri, Nov. 19, 1919. His age at the time of death he was thirty-seven years, ten months and twenty-two days. Mr. Parrott was a veteran of World Ward II, having serviced with the Army Air Corps. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Fern F. Parrott, one son, James C. Parrott, three daughters; Linda Fern, Deborah Lee and Pamela Esther Parrott of Grafton; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James H. Parrott of East Alton; one brother, Ivan Parrott of Edwardsville; one sister, Mrs. Janice Pullen of East Alton; and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Harvey of Malone, Washington. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Final rites were held at the Otterville Baptist church Monday morning, October 14 at ten o’clock. The pastor, Rev. Edgar Schulz, officiated and interment was in Sunset Hill cemetery, Edwardsville.
PARSELL. 22 April 1979: Mrs. Tillie B. Parsell, 87, of 607 S. Lafayette St., Jerseyville died at 6:25 pm 22 April at Jersey Community Hospital. Born in Jersey County 15 October 1892, she was a daughter of Murray B. and Jane T. Rich Voorhees. Mrs. Parsell was a member of First Presbyterian church of Jerseyville and a charter member of the Jersey County Farm Bureau. Surviving are two sons, Harold V. and Keith T. Parsell of Jerseyville; two daughters, Mrs. Lois Linak of Cleveland, Ohio and Mrs. Marilyn Garris of Falls Church, VA; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a sister, Helen V. Egelhoff of Baldwin, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank S. Parsell who died in 1973, a brother, sister and one daughter. Visitation April 25 at the First Presbyterian church of Jerseyville from 11 am until the time of the funeral at 2:30 pm. The Rev. M. Edwards Breed will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. The First Presbyterian church has been designated as the memorial.
PARSELL. 10 may 1979: Services for Harry T. Parsell, 94, of 410 Fletcher, Jerseyville, a retired farmer, were held Thursday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. M. Edwards Breed officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. His death occurred at 4:30 am May 8 at Greenwood Manor Nursing Home. Born 23 February 1885 he was a son of James S. and Effie Turner Parsell and was a charter member of the Jersey County Farm Bureau. His wife, the former Emma Barnett, died 18 July 1972. He is survived by a son, Allen Parsell of Jerseyville, a sister, Rena Terry of Bartow, FL. and one grandchild. His parents, wife and one brother preceded him in death.
PARSELL. 20 October 1960: Stuart Peter Parsell, fifty-nine year old farmer residing on route 16 east of Jerseyville, was found dead at his home Monday evening about seven o’clock by his wife, Mrs. Catherine Stephenson Parsell. His death was attributed to a heart malady from which he had suffered for the past three years. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home from three o’clock Wednesday afternoon until eleven o’clock this (thurs) morning when the body was taken to the First Presbyterian church where final rites are being held this afternoon with the Rev. M. Edwards Breed officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery. His death came as a shock to members of his family and the community as there had been no indication of the fatal attack. During the afternoon Mr. Parsell had stayed with his grandchildren at the home of his son and daughter-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Stuart P. Parsell, Jr., who live nearby, while the latter made a business trip to Jerseyville. Mr. Parsell had returned to his home about five o’clock and had visited with his wife, a member of the faculty of the Jersey Community High School, when she returned home. After conversing with Mrs. Parsell he went outside the home to see if his sons, Stuart, Jr., and Pfc Gene Parsell (home on leave from Camp Pendleton, Calif.) had returned from picking corn. When Stuart Parsell, Jr. returned from the field and went to the house to see his father and learning he was not there a search was started by family members. Mrs. Parsell found her husband lying in a farrowing shed which has not been in use. Pfc. Gene Parsell immediately started mouth-to-mouth respiration and a physician was summoned but death had already occurred. The decedent was a member of a pioneer Jersey County family. He was a son of the late Oliver P. and Dora M. Bohn Parsell, and was born June 6, 1901 on the Parsell homestead where he had spent all of his life and where his death occurred. The death of his father, Oliver P. Parsell, occurred in February of this year. His age at the time of death was fifty-nine years, four months, and eleven days. Since the onset of the heart malady Mr. Parsell had not been actively engaged in farming. Mr. Parsell was an active member of the First Presbyterian church and had served many years as an elder. He was a member of the Jersey County Farm Bureau and served twenty years on the board of directors of the former Spencer school east of Jerseyville where his children received their elementary education. He was also a member of the Jerseyville chapter AF & AM No. 394 and Masonic rites were conducted at the Funeral Home Wednesday evening at eight o’clock. Surviving Mrs. Parsell in addition to his wife are four sons, William O. Parsell of West Chicago, Stuart Peter Parsell, Jr. of Jerseyville, Second Lieutenant Richard L. Parsell, who is stationed at Lincoln Air Force base, Lincoln, Nebraska, and Pfc. Gene E. Parsell of Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, Calif., who arrived home Saturday on a thirty day leave; one daughter, Mrs. Doris P. Meyer of Carbondale, and nine grandchildren. PARSELL. Jan. 1918: Marian Parsell, aged 2 months and 16 days, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank S. Parsell, died Sunday morning at ten o’clock at their home three and one-half miles east of Jerseyville. Funeral services were held from the home of the baby’s grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Voorhees on Barr Avenue in this city at eleven o’clock Tuesday morning, Rev. W. S. Neely officiating and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.

PARSELL. Feb. 1985 Dow – Margaret V. Parsell, 84, died at 4:40 pm Thursday at St. Anthony’s hospital. Born in Jersey County, daughter of the late John and Ida (Kelly) Mott, she married James Parsell on June 29, 1931. He died on 21 July 1949. Surviving are a Daughter, Ruth Blattner of Dow; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Sunday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The funeral will be conducted at 1 pm Monday with the Rev. David Wilshek officiating. Burial will be in Newbern cemetery.
PARSELL. 27 June 1907: Eliza M. Smalley Born in Adamsville Summerset County, New Jersey 18 July 1828. Daughter of Isaac and Margaret Steeley Smalley, youngest of 10 children. 2 Brothers., one sister survive. The sister is in her hundredth year. She lives in New Jersey. 17 February 1847, married Peter R. Parsell of Bound Brook, New Jersey. Nine children : six sons and 3 daughters. All children living except one daughter. All present at burial of mother except Mrs. Sarah Spencer of Kansas. Those living in the community are: Isaac, Jeremiah, James, Sophia Nugent, Peter R. and Oliver P. and John R. Mrs. Eliza M. Parsell one of the pioneer and best respected citizens of Jersey County became seriously ill as she was starting to church. Dr. A. Barnett was called. Dr. Wiles also called. Blood vessel had burst on brain. 78 years old. Funeral from residence. Rev. Jordan. 25 grandchildren. All children living except one, Mrs. Margaret Herdman of Kansas, widow of late Thomas M. Herdman. The others are Mrs. Sarah Spencer; Isaac, Jeremiah, James, Sophia, wife of James D. Nugent, Peter R. and Olver P. of Jersey County and John R. of St. Louis.
PARSELL. Jersey County Democrat 4 September 1890: Peter R. Parsell born in Somerset County, New Jersey 25 December 1825 and died at his home four miles east of Jerseyville. One of family of four children. Married Miss Eliza Smalley 17 February 1847 in New Jersey, and came to Jersey County. In spring of 1864. Nine children born to them. All still living. Moved to the farm on which he died in 1866 and for several years raised hedge plants. Funeral from his home. Rev. I. C. Tyson.
PARSELL. Dec. 1951: Everett P. Parsell of Sarasota, Florida, former Jersey County resident, died Sunday, December 16, in a Sarasota hospital. He had suffered from a heart ailment in recent years. The decedent was a son of the Late Peter R. and Eva C. Moore Parsell and was born in Jersey County on 17 September 1896. His age at the time of death was fifty-five years, two months, and twenty-nine days. For a number of years Mr. Parsell engaged in farming in Jersey County, retiring because of ill health. For the past three years he had resided in Florida. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Edith Parsell of Sarasota, Florida, one daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Thomas of Jerseyville, and one son, Everett Parsell, Jr. of Sarasota, Florida. He also leaves three grandchildren. The body was brought to Jacoby Brothers., and funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, Dec. 20, at two o’clock at the first Methodist church with the pastor, Rev. F. W. Schwarzlose officiating. Services were under the auspices of Jerseyville Lodge No. 492, AF & AM. Entombment was in Oak Grove mausoleum.
PARSELL. 23 January 1975: Mrs. Catherine M. Parsell, 71, a retired teacher, died at 6 am on 22 January at Reisch Memorial home where she had resided for nearly three years. The funeral will be conducted at 2 pm Sat. 25 January at the Bethel Baptist church with the Rev. Earl Clagg officiating. Interment will be in the Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation will be held after 4 pm Friday 24 January until noon Sat. at Jacoby Funeral Home, then at the church. The family designated the heart fund as a memorial. She was born in Jerseyville 23 November 1903 a daughter of William and Ellen Smith Stephenson. Mrs. Parsell resigned from the Jersey Community High School faculty in June of 1969. She has taught in the county schools in the early fifties and began teaching at the high school in the 56-57 term. Mrs. Parsell was a member of the First United Presbyterian church. Retired Teachers Association, Order of Eastern Star, Daughters of American Revolution, charter member of the Homemakers Extension Association and a 4-H leader for many years. Her husband, Stuart P. Parsell, Sr. Died in 1960. She is survived by four sons, William O. Parsell of Dover, Nh, Stuart Peter Parsell, Jr. and Gene E. Parsell of Jerseyville and Major Richard L. Parsell of Hampton, Virginia; one daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Doris Ellen) Meyer of Sidney; thirteen grandchildren; one brother, Sam Stephenson of Jerseyville and two sisters, Mrs. Clark (Martha) Anderson of Hardin and Lt. Parsell of Jerseyville; two daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Lois) Linak of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mrs. James (Marilyn) Garris of Falls Church, Virginia; a brother, Harry T. Parsell of Jerseyville; one sister, Mrs. Rena B. Terry of Bartow, Florida; nine grandchildren. Visitation was held after 4 pm Sat. at Gubser Funeral Home. PARSELL. 16 August 1956: Christian Science services were held at the Gubser Funeral Home in this city Sunday afternoon, August 12, at two-thirty o’clock for Mrs. Dora Mildred Parsell, wife of Oliver P. Parsell, whose death occurred at seven-fifteen o’clock Thursday evening, Aug. 9, at the family home, 524 West Pearl Street. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. The decedent was born in Macoupin County, 23 December 1875, a daughter of the Late William and Ellen Hurley Bohn. Her age at the time of death was eight years, seven months, and sixteen days. On 22 September 1897, she was united in marriage with Mr. Parsell. The couple established their home east of Jerseyville where they resided until the retirement of Mr. Parsell from active farming thirty-one years ago. At that time they moved to their present home on West Pearl Street. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Parsell is survived by one son, Stuart P. Parsell; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Ewin of Jerseyville and Mrs. Lettie Martin of Detroit, Mich. Seven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs. Grace Parsell Beatty, preceded her in death in 1953.

Mrs. Parsell was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church and the pastor, Rev. M. Edwards Breed, will officiate at the services. Interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home after 4 o’clock this (thurs) afternoon. The death of Mrs. Parsell occurred at the Jersey Community Hospital Tuesday evening 18 July at 9:40 o’clock. Mrs. Parsell was a daughter of the late Allen and Phoebe Trabue Barnett and was born in Jersey County 6 March 1888. Her age at death was 84 years, 4 months and 12 days. Her marriage to Mr. Parsell took place 17 February 1909. Surviving Mrs. Parsell in addition to her husband is a son, Allen T. Parsell, and a grandson, James A. Parsell, both of Jerseyville.
PARSELL. 11 February 1960: Oliver P. Parsell, member of a pioneer Jersey County family, died Saturday afternoon, February 6 at 1:45 o’clock at his home on West Pearl Street. Mr. Parsell, who was ninety-one years old had been in failing health in recent weeks. Friends called at the Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Final rites were held Monday afternoon, February 8 at two o’clock at the Funeral Home. Rev. M. Edwards Breed pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr. Parsell was the youngest of nine children of the late Peter R., and Eliza Smalley Parsell and was born in Jersey County on 17 July 1868. His age at the time of death was ninety-one years, six months and nineteen days. Mr. Parsell was engaged in farming for a number of years before retiring and moving to Jerseyville several years ago. He is survived by one son, Stuart Parsell of Jerseyville, seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Dora Parsell, and one daughter, Mrs. Grace Parsell Beatty. Mr. and Mrs. Parsell had observed their golden wedding anniversary in September, 1947.

PARSONS. 17 August 1981: Arrangements are pending for a memorial mass for Mrs. Irene Shortal Parsons to be celebrated at the Cathedral on Lindell Blvd. in St. Louis. Mrs. Parsons, wife of the late James W. Parsons who was a practicing attorney in Mansfield, Louisana; died at 12:55 am 17 August in Waco, Texas. She had been moved to Waco the previous Thursday following 10 weeks illness at St. Mary’s Medical Center, St. Louis. Her survivors are one son, James W. Parsons of Waco; three grandchildren, Greg, Jack, and Joe Parsons, one great-grandchild and three sisters, Grace Shortal of St. Louis with whom she had made her home for the past 29 years, Hazel Shortal of San Francisco, Calif. and Florence Shortal of Jerseyville. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John M. Shortal; three brothers, Ray, Leslie and Paul Shortal and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Chappell. Mrs. Parsons had willed her body to science.
PARSONS. 1897: Rev. Nash received word that Mrs. George Parsons, only daughter and surviving child of Rev. J. A. Scarrett, died in Cairo. Burial in Chicago. She had visited Italy and other places in search of health but none seemed to benefit her.

Patrick of Orangeburg, SC; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Parents, husband, three brothers and one son, Malcom, preceded her in death.

PATTERSON. Jerseyville Republican. Nov 1917: Caroline M. Patterson was born in Lynchburg, Virginia 14 August 1828, and died 31 October 1917. 89 years old. Her parents came to Illinois about 1838, and settled in Greene County, but later came to Jersey County and settled near Fieldon. In April, 1849, the deceased married Jeshom Patterson who died in 1887. Mrs. Patterson was mother of 13 children; all grew to adulthood, but three have died since reaching their majority. The following are the children who are living: Mrs. Rule Davis, Madison, Wisconsin; Mrs. Anna Powell, Jerseyville; Mrs. Mildred Reudelman, W. John Patterson of Granite City; Mr. Sherman Patterson of Williams, Ariz.; Mr. Pearl Patterson of Glasgo, Mont. The deceased daughters are Mrs. Josephine Sandidge, Mrs. Tina Mason, Mrs. Lillie Pyle. Funeral services by Rev. F. O. Wilson from home of John Powell.
PATTON. 1921: Mrs. Addie Patton, aged 58, died Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at her home in Alton. Mrs. Patton underwent an operation at the Mullanphy hospital in St. Louis on July 13 but her condition failed to improve. Mrs. Patton is survived by her husband, Thad, two daughters, Mrs. Otto Mossa of Alton, Mrs. Olive Bossatta of New Orleans, and one son, Laverne of Alton. She also leaves a brother, Edward Marshaw of Dow, and one sister, Mrs. Lou McGee of Salina, Kans. Services were held Wednesday morning from the home and afterwards the funeral party left for the Presbyterian church at Newbern where the funeral services were held. Interment was in Newbern cemetery.
PATTON. Jersey County News, 17 February 1927: Levina A. Miller, daughter of Isaac and Nancy Miller, was born 20 February 1855 in Grafton, Illinois. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry De Shirley, Feb. 9, 1927 at the age of 71 years, 11 months, 25 days. On 30 August 1873, she was united in marriage to W. H. Bartlette. To this union four children were born. Mr. Bartlette and two children preceded her in death. In 1883 she married W. B. Patton. To this union six children were born, all of whom survive her. Mr. Patton died at their home in Grafton, in Nov. 1917. The deceased leaves to mourn her departure eight Children, Walter Bartlette of Salt Lake City, Utah; Fred Bartlette of Deer Plain, Il; Herbert T. Patton of Fruite, Colo., Elige Patton and Mrs. Nancy Kirkpatrick of Alton, Calvin and Earl Patton and Blanche Deshirley of Grafton; 13 grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Dillen and Mrs. Evelyn Jones of Alton, Mrs. Addie Lee of Detroit, Mich. Also a host of friends having lived around Grafton her entire life. Mrs. Patton united with the Baptist church when she was 10 years of age, to which faith she always held true. Funeral services were held on Fri., at home at 2 pm, Rev. C. J. Struebling officiating. Burial was in Hartford cemetery.

PATTON. Aug 1895: died August 23 1895, Isaac Patton after a brief illness of only two days. Mr. Patton was born in the year 1828 and was married to Miss Jane Wilkerson in 1850. He was converted in the year 1872 and joined the Antioch Baptist church, and for twenty-three years he has been on of its most faithful workers and supporters, ever present at the prayer meetings. On the last sabbath evening of his life he made a tender appeal to the young people to come to his savior, whom he said had ever been so precious to him. His funeral services were conducted in the Antioch church, Rev. J. Reany officiating. The drapery of the church, the beautiful floral offerings and the large procession of friends from far and near, told something of the high esteem in which Mr. Patton was held by all who knew him. He leaves a wife and seven children and a host of relatives and friends to mourn their loss, for surely ’tis his gain. Our loved one sleeps sweetly in Jesus. – his labor and conflict is past, – he rests free from care and sorrow, – his home is a bright mansion at last. – -our tears freely flow at the parting but we sorrow not hopeless, today – not lost, but gone on before us, – for we’ll meet in that land far away.
PATTON. 23 October 1969: Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 10:00 o’clock for Mrs. Beatrice Giers Patton, 80, whose death occurred October 15 at Blu Fountain Manor in Godfrey. Rev. Louis Purcell, pastor of the United Methodist church, conducted the rites and interment was in Valhalla Memorial Park. She was born in Otterville, September 28 1889 the daughter of Henry and Isabella Montgomery Giers. She and her husband, the late Harry A. Patton, had resided in Grafton where Mrs. Patton had been a member of the Grafton Eastern Star chapter and the Methodist church. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Eloise Patton Daniels of Escondido, Calif., and one grandson, Charles H. Daniels, Jr. of Escondido. Her husband and one son, Harry W. Patton, an Alton attorney, preceded her in death.

PATTON. Mar 1947: Mrs. Viola Cope Patton, wife of Calvin Patton, died unexpectedly Sunday afternoon, March 23 at four-fifteen o’clock at her home at Grafton of cerebral hemorrhage. Mrs. Patton had been suffering from high blood pressure for some time. Sunday afternoon she expressed a desire for a bottle of soda and her son, Gilbert, had left the home to get the refreshment for his mother. During his absence Mrs. Patton called to a neighbor to have her daughter, Mrs. Lowell Skeens, to come to the Patton home. When Mrs. Skeens arrived she found her mother unconscious in a chair. A physician was summoned but death occurred within a short time. Mrs. Patton was born on a farm near Jerseyville, nov. 22, 1889. She had resided at Grafton most of her life. Surviving Mrs. Patton in addition to her husband and daughter, Mrs. Skeens, are two sons, William Russell and Calvin Gilbert Patton of Grafton; one Brother Clinton Cope of Jerseyville and three sisters, Mrs. Harry Maxwell of St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. Edith White of Jerseyville and Mrs. Clifford Fuller of East Alton. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, March 25, at the Grafton Methodist church and burial was in the American Legion cemetery at Grafton.
PATTON. 10 January 1952: Fred C. Patton, former Jersey County resident, died 28 December at his home is Oswego, Illinois. He was sixty-seven years old. Mr. Patton was born March 20, 1884 at Grafton. He was a member of Full Moon Lodge No. 341, AF & AM of Grafton. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hazel Longston of Chicago and Mrs. Maxine Staley of Oswego; one brother, Harry A. Patton of Grafton, and one sister, Mrs. Blanche Cory of Grafton. He also leaves three grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the McKeown Funeral Home in Oswego Monday afternoon, December 31, with Rev. F. E. Warren officiating. Funeral services were in charge of Raven Lodge 303, AF & AM of Oswego. Interment was in Lincoln Memorial Park near Oswego.
PATTON. Died 05-12-1951. Word was received in Jerseyville last week of the death of L. R. (Dick) Patton of Riverside, Calif., formerly of Jerseyville, which occurred December 5 following a ten day illness of pneumonia and a heart condition. The decedent was born in Jerseyville on 22 September 1907, and resided here until 1919 when he moved to Wood River. In 1934 he went to California to make his home. Mr. Patton was owner of Patton’s Meat Shop in Riverside. He was active in civic affairs in riverside and was a member of the American Legion, Elks Lodge, Lions club and Business Men’s Association. Mr. Patton is survived by his widow, Mrs. Geraldine Patton, and adopted son, Richard, aged six years, a son and daughter by a former marriage., Charles Richard of Tucson, Ariz, and Mrs. Dorothy Jean McWilliams of Rock Island, Illinois; his mother, Mrs. Sarah J. Patton of Riverside; three sisters, Mrs. K. R. Neely of 4705 Sunnyside Drive, Riverside, Mrs. Dora B. Barrett of Pontiac, Mill and Mrs. H.l. Devereaux of Riverside; two Brothers, E. F. Williams of Gilroy, Calif., and H. C. King of Philadelphia, PA. A brother, Robert E. King of Riverside, died 8 May 1951. Mrs. Sarah J. Patton resided with her daughter, Mrs. Neely, in riverside.
PATTON. Dec 1953: Harry A. Patton, well-known Grafton resident, died unexpectedly at five-fifteen o’clock Wednesday afternoon, December 9, at St. Anthony infirmary in Alton where he had been a patient for 5 days. Death resulted from a cerebral hemorrhage. Mr. Patton was the oldest son of the late Sylvester and Susan Claridge Patton and was born near Otterville, on January 2, 1882. His age at the time of death was seventy-one years. His home had been in Grafton nearly all of his life but his work as a traveling salesman took him away the greater part of the time. Despite his absence occasioned by his business trips Mr. Patton found time to devote to the civic affairs of Grafton, and was a leader in the movement to take the city of Grafton “out of the mud” which resulted in the construction of Highway 100. He also worked with John D. McAdam and George Brainerd in securing options on the land above Grafton which subsequently became Pere Marquette State Park. He was elected Justice of Peace in Grafton for two terms and was currently serving in this capacity at the time of his death. For over thirty-five years he had been a representative of L. Perrigo Company, manufacturing chemists of Allega, Michigan, and his territory was central Illinois and central and southeast Missouri. He too, was in the manufacturing business in Grafton making a liniment which bore his name. His affable disposition won for him a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Mr. Patton was active in the work of the Baptist church in Grafton, and was also a member of Full Moon Lodge, No. 341,AF & AM. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Beatrice Patton of Grafton; one daughter, Mrs. Eloise E. Daniels of Escondido, Calif.; one Son, H. W. Patton, attorney of Alton one Grandson, Charles H. Daniels, Jr. of Escondido; one sister, Blanche Cory of Grafton, seven nieces and two nephews. Friends may call at the Gent Funeral Home in Alton after one o’clock Friday afternoon December 11. Funeral services will be held there at two o’clock Saturday afternoon December 12, with Rev. Ben J. Sauerwein of Grafton officiating. Interment will be…….rest of obit missing.

PAUL. Jersey County Democrat. 13 June 1918: Philip Paul, died at home of Daughter, Mrs. C. L. Beckemeyer in na. He conducted a dairy in Jerseyville for many years. 89 years old. Funeral at home of his daughter and body brought to Paul home. Funeral from ME church in Jerseyville. Rev. F. O. Wilson. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Leaves three daughters, Miss Mary Paul, who has been teaching at Bekin, Illinois, Mrs. C. L. Beckemeyer of Alton, Miss Augusta Paul and two sons, Edward Paul of Jerseyville and Dr. C. H. Paul of Chicago. Miss Mary Paul and Dr. Paul arrived Saturday. Born near Singhosen, Germany 14 January 1829. Came to America in 1851 to St. Louis. After few years went to Fosterberg, Illinois and engaged in farming. Married Margaret Herner and went to live on farm near Otterville, Illinois. Wife died 11 April 1861. He moved to Jerseyville. On 21 February 1864 he Married Mary Sophia Gerlemen of Warsaw, Illinois. She died 19 June 1913. Six children, a son, William died in boyhood and Dr. Louis P. Paul died at age 39. Lutheran church when a boy. In America the ME church. At Jerseyville he was a member of German Methodist church serving as trustee, steward, and ss superintendent at time. When that society sold the church he united with First Methodist Church. Safe in the arms of Jesus, safe on his gentle breast.
PAUL. 1907: Louis P. Paul, eldest son of Philip and Sophia Paul, born in city of Jerseyville, Illinois 21 July 1867, where he continued to reside until 1889 when he moved to Denver, Colo. Entered Denver University as a student in September of that year. Took regular course in dental college of that city from which he graduated in April, 1896, when he at once engaged in practice of his profession at Georgetown, Colo. In 1898 took post course in Chicago and returned to Georgetown. After four years, because of health reasons, went to Sugar City, there he practiced for two years.
PAYNE. 9 December 1986: Grafton – Joseph H. Payne Jr., 62, died Monday afternoon December 8, 1986 at Christian hospital northwest in St. Louis County after a lengthy illness. A World War II veteran, Payne was employed as a bottler at Anheuser-Busch brewery in St. Louis before his retirement. He was born in St. Louis, the son of Golda (Keay) Hagler of Grafton and the late Joseph H. Payne. He married the former Sophia Athanas on 2 July 1947 in St. Charles, MO and she survives. In addition to his mother and wife, surviving are a daughter, Patricia Bradfisch of Grafton; and three grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Wednesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Grafton. Services will be conducted there at 11 am Thursday By Rev. Tom Brewer. Burial will be at Scenic Hill cemetery in Grafton.

Payne on 2 August 1947. He survives. Sister, Ada Balir of Godfrey, two brothers, Everett and Laverne Tuetken both of Jersey County. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Services for Edith Mae “Tuetie” Payne of Alton, formerly of Jerseyville, were held Saturday morning at Gent Funeral Home, Alton, with the Rev. Fred Beck officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery, Jerseyville. She died at 2:22 pm 24 February at St. Mary’s health center in Clayton, Missouri. Born in Jersey County, daughter of the late Martin L. and Lula Crull Tuetken. She recently retired as a placement counselor at job service, State of Illinois, after 38 years of service. She married Leroy J. Payne on 2 August 1947 who survives. She is also survived by a sister, Ada Blair of Godfrey; and two brothers, Everett and Laverne Tuetken, both of Jersey County. The American Cancer Society and the Illinois Society for Prevention of Blindness, 53 W. Jackson, Chicago, have been named as memorials.
PEACOCK. Graveside services were conducted on August 6 at the Oak Grove cemetery here for Mrs. Elizabeth M. Peacock of Independence, MO whose death occurred on 3 August at Sunrise Beach, Missouri. The Rev. William Smith officiated. She was born in Fieldon on April 9, 1894 a daughter of Lester A. and Mary Haushalter Snow. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Anna Grace Martin of Independence, Missouri; a sister, Mrs. Harry Simpson of Kansas City, Missouri; two grandchildren; and a half brother, Ed Snow of Jerseyville. Jacoby Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
PEAIRS. Jerseyville Republican. January 1905: J. S. Peairs, resident of Jersey and Otter Creek townships. Died at home in Shenondoah, IA. Tues. Dec 20, 1904. 91 years old. On 26 December 1839, while teaching at Whitehall, Illinois, he was married to Malinda Godwin. “He did one very wise thing,” he wrote in his account, alluding to his marriage. Five children born to them. Two are living, Mrs. H. S. Nichols and Mrs. M. A. Trotter, Both of Shenandoah.
PEARCE. 23 October 1969: Gilbert Ray Pearce, a former leader in farm and dairy operations in Jersey County, died at six-twenty o’clock Saturday evening at the Jersey Community Hospital where he had been a patient for two days. Funeral services were held at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. M. Edwards Breed, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church of Jerseyville officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. A lifelong resident of Jersey County, Mr. Pearce was born here 19 may 1887, a son of the late Gilbert and Hattie Sloan Pearce. His survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Pauline Terry of Passaic, New Jersey, and Mrs. Harriet Phillips of lake worth, Florida; one son, vincent Pearce of Jerseyville; and one sister, Mrs. Marian Zimmerman of Columbia, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and two brothers. In connection with his dairy interest, Mr. Pearce helped for a number of years of the Sanitary Milk Producers Association. He was a former director of the Jersey County Farm Bureau, served as president of the Illini Production Credit Corporation at Carlinville for a number of years, and was active in the Jersey County Anti-Thief Association. Mr. Pearce worked with the US Department of Agriculture in initiating the brucellosis program, and his herd was one of two in the State of Illinois in the original research work. At the time of death he was a member of the Jerseyville Rotary Club and the Farm Bureau.
PEARCE. 14 June 1956: picture of deceased Included: Grover Preston Pearce, retired farmer and former official of Jersey County, died at eleven-fifteen o’clock Thursday Night, June 7 at the Memorial hospital in Alton where he had been a patient for the past eleven days. Mr. Pearce was a son of the late Gilbert and Hattie Miller Pearce and was born in Jerseyville 29 July 1884. His age at the time of death was seventy-one years, ten months and eight days. For many years Mr. Pearce engaged in farming east of Jerseyville. In 1942, the decedent was elected to the office of County Treasurer in Jersey County for a four year term, and in 1946 he was elected County Clerk for four years, completing his work as a county official in 1950. Mr. Pearce was member of the Republican party and for many years was Precinct Committeeman from Fidelity Township. A few years ago Mr. and Mrs. Pearce moved from their farm to Jerseyville and have since resided at 401 Barr Avenue in this city. In connection with his farming interests Mr. Pearce was active in the work of the Jersey County Farm Bureau. He was a member of the Methodist church at Piasa. Surviving the deceased are his wife, Mrs. Mary Pearce; three daughters, Mrs. Phebe Steinkuehler and Mrs. Edith Lahr of Jerseyville and Mrs. Virginia Monical of Millersville, Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren; one great grandson; one brother, G. Ray Pearce of Jerseyville; one sister, Mrs. Marian Zimmerman of National City, Calif.; and Aunt, Mrs. Daisy Summerhays of Jerseyville, and an Uncle, G. W. Miller of Shipman. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville until Monday noon. Funeral services were held that afternoon at two o’clock at the Piasa Methodist church with Rev. Ellis Daivs of Medora officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.

She had been in ill health for some time. Mrs. Pearce was a daughter of the Late Robert and Mary Sloan Miller, and was born in Macoupin County, Illinois 4 December 1865. Her age at the time of death was eight-seven years, seven months and one day. Surviving Mrs. Pearce are two sons, Grover P. Pearce, former County Treasurer and County clerk of Jersey County, and Gilbert Ray Pearce of Jerseyville; one daughter, Mrs. Marian Zimmerman of San Diego, Calif.; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Daisy Summerhays of Jerseyville and one brother, George W. Miller of Shipman. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home Wed. 8 July at two o’clock with the Rev. John T. Lillard, pastor of the Holy Cross Episcopal church officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.
PEARCE. June 1911: Gilbert Pearce, Sr. died Friday morning at the home of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Hattie Pearce, at the advanced age of 84 years. Death was due to senile debility. The funeral services were held at 2:30 o’clock on Sunday afternoon from the church of the Holy Cross, Rector Thomlins officiating. The burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr. Pearce was a native of England. He came to Jersey County thirteen years ago and made his home with his son, Gilbert Pearce, Jr. Whose death occurred last February. He leaves eight children. Five daughters live in London, England; one son and one daughter in New Zealand and one son in Los Angeles, Cal.
PEARSE. Jerseyville – Dorothy E. Pearse, 64, died at 11:55 am Thursday 21 February 1991 at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. She was born in east St. Louis, where she married Louis A. Pearse on 12 October 1949. He died on 26 October 1965. Surviving are three daughters, Cathy Helfer, Kim Frank and Frances Butler, all of Jerseyville; three sons, Bernie Pearse of Caseyville, Louie Pearse of Kane and Mike Pearse of Jerseyville; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Asberry of Seward, Neb. A grandson and a brother, Richard Hoffman, preceded her in death. Visitation is from 1 to 9 pm Sunday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. A funeral mass is at 10 am Monday at Holy Ghost Catholic church in Jerseyville with the Rev. Lloyd Misesko as celebrant. Burial is in Jefferson Barracks National cemetery in St. Louis County. Masses to the church are preferred for memorials.
PEARSON. 1 August 1968: Committal rites were held Friday, July 26, at the Lamb Memorial cemetery south of Jerseyville for Shirley Pearson of Thornton. Rev. Louis Purcell, pastor of the United Methodist church of Jerseyville, was in charge of the graveside service. The death of Mr. Pearson occurred Tuesday Morning 22 July in a hospital in Harvey. He was a son of the late George H. and Alma Jeanette Pearson and was born at Glenwood. Mr. Pearson was married to the former Miss Octie Cornelius in St. John’s Methodist church in St. Louis on 17 August 1929, with Bishop Ivan Lee Holt performing the ceremony. Surviving him in addition to his wife are two sisters, Georgie and Mrs. Florence Carr of Lawrence, Michigan, six brothers, Clyde of Thornton, Leonard of Frankford, Clifford of Gary, Indiana, Donald and Milford of Lawrence, Mich., and Bernard of Chicago Heights. Mr. Pearson was a member of the Thornton Methodist church. He was a mechanic by trade and had recently retired. Funeral services were held in the chapel of Deyoung-Broegh Funeral Home in South Holland on 25 July with Rev. Eugene Vandoske, Pastor of the Thornton Methodist church officiating. Mrs. Pearson is a sister of Mrs. Madge Ely, Mrs. Ruth Keehner, Mrs. Sylvia Topping and Homer Cornelius.

Rev. James Robertson officiated at the rites and burial was in Lamb Memorial cemetery southwest of Jerseyville. Born 7 October 1899 in Macoupin County she was the daughter of the Late H. S. and Anna Burley Cornelius. She formerly resided in Thornton where she was a member of the Thornton Methodist church. Mrs. Pearson retired as a teacher 1 February 1962 and was presented Cook County school’s distinguished service award for her forty-four years of teaching in Jersey and Cook counties. She is survived by five sisters, Mrs. Roy Ely, Mrs. Ruth Keehner, and Mrs. Willis Topping of Jerseyville and Mrs. Jessie Kelly and Mrs. Harriett Teetzel of Oak View, Calif.; and two brothers, Roland Cornelius of Santa Monica, Calif., and Homer Cornelius of Jerseyville. Her Husband, Shirley C. Pearson, preceded her in death two years ago and one brother, Oren, also preceded her in death.
PEGUE. 13 June 1956: Mrs. Mary Ellen Pegue, wife of George F. Pegue, died at one-eighteen o’clock Tuesday afternoon, 11 June at her home, 502 South Pearl Street, following a period of failing health which had extended over a period of two years. Friends may call at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at the Church of the Holy Ghost on Friday morning, 14 June at nine o’clock. Requiem mass will be celebrated by Father Paul P. Heinen, and burial will be in St. Francis Xavier cemetery. Mrs. Pegue was born in Jersey County, 3 December 1876, a daughter of the late Thomas and Ellen Murray Levene, and her age at death was eighty years, six months and eight days. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Pegue is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Nellie Carroll and Mrs. Dorothy Allen of Jerseyville and Mrs. Alice Greeling of Godfrey; ten grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; one brother, Matt Levene of Jacksonville, and one sister, Rose Levene of New Berlin. Three sons and two Daughters: Leo, Jerome, Frederick, Agnes and Gertrude preceded her in death.

PEGUE. 21 August 1972: Funeral mass for George fred Pegue, 92, a retired farmer in Jersey County, will be celebrated this morning (thurs) at 9:30 o’clock at the Holy Ghost church in Jerseyville, Father Robert Heintz celebrant. His death occurred Monday evening at St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton. Mr. Pegue had been hospitalized since undergoing surgery for a hip fracture sustained in a fall at his home. He was born 14 September 1879 in Jersey County, a son of James and Caroline Kanallakan Pegue. His wife, the former Mary Ellen Levene, died in 1957. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Nellie Carroll and Mrs. Dorothy Allen of Jerseyville, 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, three sons, three daughters and one brother. Visitation hours were held Wednesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where the rosary was recited at 8:00 in the evening.

Lafayette St., this city, died at two-ten o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Jersey Community Hospital where she had been a medical patient for a few days. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Services were held at two-thirty o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the First Baptist church with Rev. Carlton Christenson officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs. Peirson, a daughter of the late Lloyd W. and Mary E. Davis Sunderland, was born in Jersey County 2 November 1891. Her survivors are two sisters, Mrs. Frank E. PELLIKAN. 31 July 1978: Charles C. Pellikan, 79, of R. 1, Grafton, a retired dairy farmer, died at 12:30 pm 30 July at Alton Memorial hospital. He was born in Alton 24 July 1899, a son of the late henry and Mae Besterfeld Pellikan. Pellikan was a member of the Jersey County Farm Bureau, Modern Woodmen of America, and Grafton United Methodist church. His survivors are his wife, the former Grace Schlansker whom he married 10 May 1924; one son, Donald R. Pellikan of Grafton; three grandchildren; three Sisters, Lucy Ringhausen and Tillie Lohr of Jerseyville and Rosa Repke of St. Ann, Missouri. Visitation will be held 1 August from 3 to 9 at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville and after 11 am Wednesday at the Grafton United Methodist church until time of services at 1 pm. Rev. Robert Patterson will officiate. Burial will be in the Scenic Hill cemetery. The family has designated the Grafton United Methodist church as a memorial.
PELLIKAN. Alton Telegraph September 1985: Grace S. Pellikan, 83, of Grafton died at 7:30 am Friday at Garnet’s Chateau Nursing Home in Jerseyville. Born in Grafton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Schlansker. She retired in 1968 after teaching school for 43 years in Jersey County schools. She married the late Charles Pellikan on 10 May 1924. He died 30 July 1978. Surviving are a son, Donald R. Pellikan of Grafton and three grandchildren. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 9 pm at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Visitation will continue at Grafton United Methodist church at 10 am Monday until time of services at 11 am with the Rev. Tommy Brewer officiating. Burial will be at Scenic Hill cemetery, Grafton. The Grafton United Methodist church and Jersey Community Hospital have been designated for memorials.

PENDICK. 19 February 1983: Greenfield: Cressa V. Pendick, 88, died at 6:45 pmFriday at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. She was the daughter of the late William Henry and Mattie (Loper) Dams and was born in Chesterfield. She married Louis C. Pendick on 18 December 1913 in St. Louis and he preceded her in death in 1957. She is survived by two daughters, Virginia Struble of Chesterfield and Lois Lea Ford of Greenfield; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be after 4 pm on Sunday at Shields Memorial home in Greenfield with funeral services there at 1 pm Monday. Burial will be in Oak Wood cemetery, and memorials may be made to the Greenfield United Methodist church.

PENNIMAN. 8 January 1970: Mrs. Laura M. Penniman, wife of Wm. L. Penniman of Route One, Jerseyville, died Saturday 3 January at 6:05 pm at the Jersey Community Hospital where she had been a patient for twenty-two days suffering from a heart ailment. Rev. Louis Purcell, pastor of the United Methodist church, officiated at the final rites held Wednesday afternoon at the Gubser Funeral Home where visitation hours were held. Interment was in the Shipman cemetery. The family designated Jersey Community Hospital as a memorial. Mrs. Penniman, who had resided east of Jerseyville for almost six years, was a past officer of the Jerseyville Woman’s Club of which she was a member, was active member of the Jersey Community Hospital Woman’s Auxiliary and was serving as chairman of the Courtesy Cart, and a member of the Jerseyville Eastern Star chapter. Mrs. Penniman was a daughter of the Late Garrett and Eva B. Lowder Van Winkle and was born 10 March 1903 at Avon. Her age at death was 66 years, 9 months and 23 days. Surviving her in addition to her husband, are a son, David of Columbus, Ohio; one daughter Mrs. John Easton of Maryland Heights, Missouri; three brothers, Garrett Van Winkle of Washington, D.c., Edward Van Winkle of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Daniel Van Winkle of Peoria; four sisters, Misses Helen and Edith Van Winkle of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. George Felch of Colfax, Wash., and Mrs. George Austin of Newburg, Oregon; and three grandchildren.
PENNING. Died 15-12-1953. 1953: Mrs. Rachel M. Penning, widow of Christopher Penning, died at seven-fifteen o’clock at her home in Brighton. She had been in failing health for the past two years. Mrs. Penning was born at Gerald, Missouri, and her age at the time of death was seventy-six years. Her marriage to Mr. Penning took place in St. Charles, MO, in 1897. Mr. and Mrs. Penning moved to a farm near Medora after he retired from the automobile business in Medora, and about nine years ago they moved to Brighton. The death of Mr. Penning occurred on 3 December 1952. The deceased is survived by one son, Fred Penning of Wood River; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Friends may call at the Warner Funeral Home in Brighton. Funeral services will be held at the Evangelical church in Brighton Friday afternoon at two o’clock and burial will be in Wanda cemetery.
PENNING. Died 03-12-1952. Dec 1952: Funeral services for C. F. Penning of Brighton were held at the Evangelical and Reformed church in Brighton, Saturday, December 6. Burial was in Wanda cemetery. Mr. Penning was a former resident of Jerseyville and Medora. He was a son of the late Frederick and Fannie Hendricks Penning. He was married 22 October 1897 to Rachel McConnell, and the couple celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at Brighton and their fifty-fifth anniversary at Wood River. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rachel Penning, one son, Fred F. Penning of Wood River; two sisters, Mrs. Walter Fox and Mrs. Tillie Smith of Wood River; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. Carl Piggott, preceded him in death in 1934.

Celebrated 50th in 1913. Leaves widow and three Sons: Dr. G. R. Pennington of St. Louis, Herb Pennington and J. T. Pennington. One daughter, Mrs. Horace Brown of Danville. One brother; Elijah Pennington of Orange, New Jersey. Burial in Dodge Grove Cemetery at Matoon.

PENNINGTON. August 1906: Dr. L. S. Pennington 93 years old, died in Sterling, Illinois 31 July. He came to Jersey County in 1836 where he practiced medicine for a short time. Twice married. First to Ann P. Barnett of Brighton, Illinois In 1837 she died in 1866. In 1868 he married Ruth A. Morrison.
PERDUN. 31 May 1986: Jerseyville: Howard “Dick” Perdun, 60, died unexpectedly at 5:17 pm Friday, May 30 1986 at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. He was Jersey County Sheriff from 1959-62; Jersey County Treasurer from 1962-64; Jerseyville Acting Postmaster from 1964-67; currently on the Jersey County Board; and a Democratic Precinct Committeeman. He was a member of many area organizations including the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association; Jersey County Farm Bureau; Jerseyvillemasonic Lodge; Ainad Temple of the Shrine; Jerseyville Elks Lodge; and the Rotary Club. He was born in Jersey County, son of the Late Lloyd and Rosa (Tucker) Perdun. The World War II veteran married the former Jo Ann Sunderland on 2 January 1950 and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, Gregory Perdun of Grafton and Richard Perdun of Jerseyville; two daughters Diane Heitzig and Rosemary Wock both of Jerseyville; six grandchildren; two brothers, William and Joe Perdun, both of Jerseyville; and three Sisters, Irene McKenna and Josephine Crabtree, both of Jerseyville and Helen Arnold of Mesa, Ariz. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Sunday and until noon Monday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. At the First Baptist church of Jerseyville, visitation will be from noon Monday until time of services at 2 pm with the Rev. V. Clay Noah Jr. Officiating. Graveside military rites will be conducted at Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville by the Jerseyville American Leigon and VFW Post, both of which he was a member. Memorials may be sent to the church, where he was a member.
PERDUN. 19 December 1986 : Jerseyville – Wayne “Dump” Perdun, 48, died at 3:30 pm Thursday 18 December 1986 at Jersey Community Hospital after a one-year illness. Perdun was a carpenter with Alton Local 377 until 1985 when he retired due to ill health. He served in the US Army from 1956-58 and was born in East Alton, son of the Late Lloyd Arthur and Mildred (Smith) Perdun. Surviving are a son, Wayne C. Perdun, Jr. of Jerseyville; a daughter Shelley K. Perdun of Jerseyville; three brothers, Gerald “Sonny” Perdun, David Perdun and Donald E. Perdun, all of Jerseyville; and two sisters, Carol Sandberg of Atlanta, GA, and Cathryn Main of Jerseyville. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Saturday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Services will be held there at 2 pm sun. With Rev. Wayne Pendleton officiating. Burial with graveside military rites will be at Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. PERDUN. 27 January 1981: services for Maurice Perdun, 70, 866 S. Liberty, Jerseyville were conducted Thursday afternoon at the First Baptist church by the Rev. V. Clay Noah. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He died at 2 pm 19 January at St. Luke’s east hospital, St. Louis. The retiree was manager of the former Brown Produce business here. Born in Jersey County 11 February 1910, he was a son of the late Clarence and Bertha Winant Perdun. His survivors are his wife, the former Idabelle Nash whom he married 15 October 1932; two Daughters, Mary Howard of Winchester and Frances Willis of Jerseyville, one son, Elwyn “Gene” Perdun of South Roxana; 15 grandchildren and five great grandchildren; one sister, Opal Rudolf of Marilyn Heights, Missouri; two brothers, Melvin Perdun of St. Louis and Elwyn Perdun of Jerseyville. He was preceded in death by a daughter, two sisters, one brother, a half sister and two half brothers. The First Baptist church was designated as a memorial.
PERDUN. Jerseyville: Stuart N. Perdun, 59, died at 1:50 pm Sunday, 22 January 1989 at Alton Memorial hospital. Perdun was a US Navy veteran of the Korean war. He was a self-employed carpenter and retired in 1978 as a railroad agent from GM & O railroad. Born in Carrollton, his parents were the late Clarence Jacob and Bonnie (Reynolds) Perdun. He married the former Betty Brady 14 June 1952 in Kane. Surviving are his wife; a son, Stuart L. Perdun of Jerseyville; a grandchild; a sister, Charlotte Dixon of Fontana, Calif., two brothers Charles Perdun of Springfield and Clarence Maurice Perdun of North Carolina. A brother, Robert Perdun, preceded him in death. Visitation is 6-9 pm Tuesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, with services to be conducted 10 am Wednesday by Charles Pine. Burial will be in Kane cemetery. Memorials may be given to a charity of one’s choice.
PERDUN. 27 November 1969: Lloyd Perdun, a retired Jersey County farmer, died Saturday morning, November 22 at 10:30 o’clock at St. Anthony’s hospital in Alton where he had been a patient for a day. Mr. Perdun resided west of Jerseyville in English township. Final rites were conducted at the United Methodist church in Jerseyville Tuesday afternoon, 25 November at two o’clock by the pastor, Rev. W. Louis Purcell. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation hours were held at the Gubser Funeral Home and Masonic services were conducted at the funeral home Monday evening at eight o’clock. Mr. Perdun was a son of the Late Clarence and Emma Boomer Perdun and was born in Jersey County 8 October 1885.
PERDUN. 28 March 1968: Funeral services for Mrs. Nancy E. Perdun, wife of Lloyd Perdun of English township will be held this (thurs) afternoon at two o’clock at the Church of God on Pence Street in East Alton. Rev. John Findley of East Alton will officiate and burial will be in Valhalla cemetery. Visitation hours are being held at the Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville until 11 o’clock this morning when the body will be moved to the church. Mrs. Perdun’s death occurred Monday afternoon at 2:10 o’clock at the Jersey Community Hospital where she had been a patient three weeks. She was a daughter of the late Thomas J. and Anna Jones Cox and was born 6 May 1892 in southern Illinois. Surviving her in addition to her husband are five daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Hicks of Hartford, Mrs. Ann Milazzo and Mrs. Lewis Petitt of Rosewood Heights, Mrs. Opal Freeman of Godfrey and Mrs. Dale Schofield of Artesia, Calif.; five sons, Luther Wooden of Wood River, Rev. Edwin Wooden of Fort Worth, Texas, Rev. George Wooden of Alton, Jack Wooden of Godfrey and Robert Wooden of East Alton; one brother, John Cox of Alton; thirty-four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Mrs. Perdun is also survived by eight step-children and several step-grandchildren.
PERDUN. 6 April 1967: Mrs. Bertha E. Perdun of this city, whose death occurred March 30 at 11:55 pm is survived by 166 descendants. She died at the Jersey Community Hospital where she had been a patient about eight days. Visitation hours were held at Gubser Funeral Home until 11 o’clock Sunday morning when the body was moved to the Gospel Assembly Church where final rites were held at 1:30 o’clock that afternoon. The pastor, Rev. Harry Frazer, officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs. Perdun, a long time resident of Jersey County, was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James K. Winant and was born 1 August 1877 in Carthage, Missouri. Her age at the time of death was 89 years, 7 months, and 29 days. Mrs. Perdun suffered a hip fracture two years ago and since that time she and her daughter, Miss Myrtle Perdun, had resided at Garnet’s Nursing Home. Surviving her in addition to her daughter, Myrtle, are another daughter, Mrs. Opal Rudolph of St. Louis, four sons, Melvin of St. Louis, Charles of St. Louis County, Maurice of Jerseyville, and Elwyn of Brighton; a step son Lloyd Perdun of Jerseyville, 27 grandchildren, 78 great grandchildren, and 55 great, great grandchildren.
PERDUN. 8 April 1971: Mrs. Bonnie Laura Perdun, 66, of Kane collapsed and died on the sidewalk of her neighbor, Mrs. Everett Ferguson, who found her around 7:00 o’clock Sunday morning. She had apparently become ill and was seeking help. Funeral rites were held Tuesday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where visitation hours were held after 4:00 pm Monday. Rev. Francis Lee officiated at the services with interment in Kane cemetery. She was born 5 March 1905 in Jersey County the daughter of Charles and Rose Day Reynolds. Her husband, Clarence J. Perdun, preceded her in death. Her survivors are four sons, Maurice, Stuart, and Charles Perdun of Brighton and Robert Perdun of Lancaster, Penn.; one daughter Mrs. Charlotte Elliott of Fontana, Calif.; thirteen grandchildren; one brother, Charles Reynolds of Jerseyville; and five sisters, Mrs. Charles Brueggemann and Mrs. Sarah Roewe, Jerseyville, Mrs. Walter Brueggemann, St. Louis, Mrs. Lyle Edwards, Oklahoma City, OK, and Mrs. Matthew Letich of Staten Island, New York.
PERDUN. Jerseyville: Elwyn B. Perdun, 74, died at 11:45 pm Wednesday November 2, 1988 at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville, after a lengthy illness. Perdun was a lifetime farmer, retiring in 1972. From 1941-57 he worked for Olin Corp. of East Alton. Born in Jerseyville his parents were the late Clarence and Bertha (Winant) Perdun. On March 6, 1937, at Waterloo, he married the former Laverne R. Maxiener, and she survives. Also surviving are a Son, Darwyn Perdun of Dorsey, and a granddaughter. Four sisters and five brothers preceded him in death. Visitation is 4-9 pm Friday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. At Bible Baptist church in Jerseyville, visitation will continue noon Saturday Until time of services at 1:30 pm. Rev. William Elder will officiate. Burial will be in Brighton cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church where Perdun had been a member.
PEREBOOM. Atlantis, Florida – former Jerseyville resident, Frank S. Pereboom, 88, died Saturday, July 20, 1991 after a short illness. He managed grain farms in Illinois and was a member of the Old Guard Society. Surviving are his wife, Jean; a Daughter, Judy Vaughan of Boca Raton, Florida, a grand daughter; and a sister, Helen Hershfeld of Springfield. Visitation is from 6 to 8 pm Monday at E. PERKINSON. 27 November 1978: A funeral mass was celebrated at noon Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic church in Alton for Raymond Perkinson, 78, Jerseyville, with the Rev. Brendan Keane as celebrant. Burial was in Alton city cemetery. He died unexpectedly at 4 pm 22 November at his home on R. 1, Jerseyville. Born in Alton, he was a son of the late George and Virginia Perkinson. He was employed at the Illinois Terminal Railroad for 33 years, retiring in 1955. Nieces and nephews survive. He was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.

She had been in an automobile accident 13 January on Route 267. She was born in Missouri, daughter of the late Andrew J. and Allie Stacey Simmons. She married Charles Leo Perkinson who died 25 July 1966. She is survived by seven Daughters, Deloris Holland, Fulton, New York. – – Martin, Delhi; Terry McGauley, Shepherdsville, KY, Betty L. Cairns, Alice Forbes, Mary Arkabauer and Verbal Lee Buchanan, all of Alton; four Sons, Charles and Donald of Godfrey, Alex and Dennis of Jerseyville; 31 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; a Sister, Clara Wilson of Randalls, Missouri; two half sisters of Alton; and a brother, Orsow Simmons of Collinsville. The American Cancer Society was named as a memorial. Burial was in Alton cemetery.
PERRINE. The Examiner 4 September 1878: Mrs. Helen K. Perrine, 50 years old, born in New York city 13 August 1828. Maiden name Vanderberg, daughter of J. G. and Maria Baird Vanderberg. Married Thomas Perrine near Hightstown, New Jersey 28 March 1855 and in a few days came to Jersey County. Seven children. Three deceased. Baptist church in Jerseyville. Husband died a little over three years ago. Sincere Christian. Burial in new cemetery (Oak Grove). Rev. C. E. Taylor.
PERRINE. Feb 1923: James L. Perrine died at his home, 903 West Carpenter Street in this city, Thursday 22 February 1923 at 12:30 pm. He was 70 years, 11 months and 29 days of age. He is survived by his wife, one brother, Thomas Perrine of Newburgh, New York and a niece, Miss Mary Perrine, of Summerville, New Jersey, both of whom came to Jerseyville to be with Mr. Perrine at his death. Funeral services will be held from the Baptist church, Sunday, 25 February at 2:30 pm., Rev. George Dunn officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery.
PERRINE. 26 February 1970: Mrs. Bea Guthrie Perrine, 58, of Jacksonville, a former resident of Jersey County, died Friday, 20 February at Holy Cross Hospital in Jacksonville. She was employed in the Vogue Fabric Shop in Jacksonville for several years. Surviving her are a son and daughter and eight sisters and brothers. Final rites were held Monday at the William Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Eagleton of Nutwood, and Mrs. Herman Geisler of Jerseyville went to Jacksonville Sunday evening to pay their respects to the family of Mrs. Perrine.

At her fathers death she became member of the family of Mr. Clarence Hamilton of Jerseyville, remaining there until 6 April 1886 when she married James L. Perrine. Leaves husband, sister, Mrs. Sarah Gish of Okla., a half Brother, Wm. Coates of East St. Louis and sister Mrs. Jennie Miller at whose home she died. Although separated from her sisters at an early age, there was always that affection for there was always perfect harmony. She made preparations for her death with calmness. PERRINE. Jerseyville Republican 14 July 1921: Remains of Hattie E. Perrine bought to Jerseyville for burial in Oak Grove cemetery beside her husband, Charles V. Perrine. She died at Pomona, Calif. Rev. R. B. Favoright serving. Mrs. Perrine was Miss Hattie Brooks who formerly lived in Jerseyville.
PERRINGS. Dec 1906: Word was received in Jerseyville Tuesday by the relatives of the death of James Perrings, a former resident of Jersey County, which occurred in Stockton, Cal. on the 24th of November. The funeral services were conducted from the Baptist church in Merced, Cal., on Sunday, November 26th. In 1849 Mr. Perrings crossed the continent to the newly discovered gold fields of California, where he accumulated a large fortune. He also built the First Baptist church at Merced. The deceased is survived by his wife and three brothers, Amos and Washington Perrings of Jerseyville and Charles Perrings of Carlinville.

PERRINGS. Aug 1921: John Perrings, well-known former resident of Jerseyville, died at St. John’s hospital at Springfield, Illinois This afternoon at 2:00 o’clock. He was born at the Perrings home five miles east of Jerseyville, on Nov. 11 1866, and was the son of Amos Perrings. He was married to Miss Caritola Skelly, who preceded him in death about eight years ago. Mr. Perrings resided in Jerseyville all his life until about six years ago, when he engaged in the elevator business in New Berlin. He is survived by his two children, Miss Myra Perrings of New Berlin and Leslie Perrings of Springfield and grandson, Robert Perrings, two sisters, Mrs. M. J. Dolan of this city and Mrs. C. V. King of Burlingame, Kansas, and one brother, James Perrings of Morrisonville. Funeral arrangements are not complete, but the remains will be brought here tomorrow, Friday, and taken to the home of M. J. Dolan, where funeral services will be conducted.
PERRY. Jerseyville Republican 13 August 1909: Commodore Perry, 66 years died at home in Jersey. 12 Aug. Funeral Baptist church.
PERRINGS. Dr. James Perry, a Scotsman, had served in British Navy for 7 years. Came to Otter Creek settlement in 1835 to take practice of Dr. Hamilton. Lived and practiced until 1842. First foreign born man to be naturalized in Jersey County Court. (no death dates or birth dates included on this card)
PERSHALL. 8 May 1975: Mrs. Grace A. (McElroy) Pershall, 74, a former resident of Jersey County, died at 11:30 am on 30 April in Miami Beach, Florida. Her survivors include her husband, Samuel Pershall, Sr.; a son, Samuel Pershall, Jr. St. Louis; a brother William McElroy of Springfield; one sister, Mrs. Florence Griffith of Alton and two grandchildren. Final rites were conducted on 2 May at the mercer Funeral Home in Granite City with burial in the Sunset Hill cemetery, Edwardsville.
PETERS. Alton: Ruth I. Peters died at 9:55 am Friday, 8 March 1991, at Eldercare of Alton, after a lengthy illness. Born in Jerseyville, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Cora May (Ely) Peters. She worked at Pet Milk Co. as a secretary for more than 40 years, retiring in 1969. Preceding her in death were two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Peters and Upha Schmidt. Visitation is from noon to 12:45 pm Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Alton. A funeral mass is at 1 pm Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Alton. Burial is in upper Alton cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Bells of St. Mary’s restoration fund or to masses.
PETERS. Jerseyville Republican March 1907: Mrs. Mary Gallager Peters died Wednesday morning at St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton. Remains to Jerseyville on the C & A train and taken to Holy Ghost church where Father Marks conducted services. Mrs. Peters formerly lived here and is daughter of Mrs. Chas. Catt of this city.
PETERS. Feb 1975: Mrs. Verna Peters of St. Louis, the former Verna Gibbons of Jerseyville, died at 1 pm on 19 February at St. Luke’s hospital in St. Louis after an extended illness. Born and reared here, she was educated in St. Francis Xavier school and Jersey township high school. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Martin Gibbons of Jerseyville and sister of the late John F. Gibbons. She is survived by her husband, Anthony Peters; four children, a sister, sister Loretta Marie, O.P. of Our Lady of Grace Convent, Chicago. Funeral mass was celebrated Saturday 22 February at St. Stephen Protomartyr church in St. Louis with interment in SS Peter and Paul cemetery.
PETERSON. Sep 1984: Clarence A. Peterson, 79, of Jerseyville, a retired journalist, died September 1 at Alton Memorial hospital, followed by cremation. He retired in 1973 from the Chicago Sun Times and also formerly worked for the Chicago Tribune. The Minnesota native was born 2 August 1905, son of John and Margret Peterson. His only survivor is his wife, the former Opal Snow, whom he married in Chicago. Two sisters preceded him in death. A memorial service will be conducted at 10 am 29 September at the Hardin Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dan Johnson and cremains will be interred in Hardin cemetery. PETERSON. 14 May 1983: James Richard Peterson, seven, son of John Richard and Jane Anne Noble Peterson Jr of Godfrey died at 5:12 am 13 May at St. Louis Children’s Hospital following a brief illness. He was born 7 January 1976 in Alton. He is survived by his parents; grandparents, John R. Peterson Sr. of Boston, Mass., Virginia Peterson, Orlando, Florida, Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Noble of Wood River and Mr and Mrs. C. G. Milford of Alton; one sister, Julia, at home; four brothers, Mitchell and John at home, and Scott and David who are doing missionary work in the Philippines. Services were held Monday morning at the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Alton Ward, with M. Mortensen, reader. Burial was in the Hartford cemetery near Grafton. PETITT. 16 April 1985: Jerseyville – Mildred Petitt, 75, died at 8:38 am Monday at Jersey Community Hospital. She was a teacher for 42 years in Jersey and Madison County school districts. Born in Illinois, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mamie (Yates) Talbert, she married Alvin H. Petitt on 31 May 1934 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He died 8 September 1980. She was the president of Jerseyville Women’s Club and a past President of the 20th District Illinois Federation of Women’s Clubs. Surviving are a Daughter, Kathy Allene Hackmann of Menlo Park, Calif., a brother Clyde Talbert of Wayne City; and a Sister, Myrtle Templeton of Pinckneyville. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Wednesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The funeral will be conducted at 10:30 am Thursday with the Rev. R. E. George officiating. PETITT. Sept. 1980: Alvin H. Petitt, 82, of 306 W. Exchange St., Jerseyville attorney, died at 5:48 am 8 September at the Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton. He was born 6 February 1898 in Alexander County, a son of Harry and Ida Murphy Petitt. He married the former Mildred Talbert 31 May 1934 in Cape Girardeau, MO who survives. Petitt had served as a former Jersey County State’s Attorney for 14 years and was a former City Attorney for Jerseyville, Hartford, and Grafton. He was a member of the United Methodist church and World War I veterans association and was a 25 year Mason. The attorney was life time member of the University of Missouri Law School Alumni Association at Kansas City and was a member of the Illinois Bar Association and American Legion. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Kathy Hackmann of Palo Alto, Calif.; two brothers, Hugh Petitt of Thebes and Ethridge of Elma, Wash. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, four brothers and three sister. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Tuesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Masonic services at 7 pm. The Rev. R. E. George will conduct the funeral at 1:30 pm Wednesday at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. PETREY. 31 October 1974: Final services were held October 23 in Washington, Indiana for Mrs. Paul (Virginia) Petrey, 60, of Washington. Mrs. Petrey was the daughter of the Late Otis and Sade Frost of Jerseyville. Her death occurred on 21 October following a lengthy illness. She is survived by her husband, Paul; one daughter, Martha, three grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Gladys Jerde of Belleville and one brother, Russell Frost of St. Louis.
