Ethelbert Henkel Abbott, 63, of 309 Harriett, Alton, died at 9:20 a.m. on Oct 29 at the Pike County Hospital, Louisiana, MO. Final services will be held at the Jacoby Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, with the Rev. Garold Cooper officiating. Interment will be in the Kane Cemetery. Friends may call at Jacoby Funeral Home after 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31st. He was born Dec 3, 1910 at Kane, the son of Albert A. Abbott and Ethel Henkel Abbott and was self employed. His survivors include his parents, Mr and Mrs Albert A. Abbott of Kane; one son, Ethelbert H. Abbott, Jr., Louisville, KY.; five daughters, Mrs Gwendolyn Wisbey, Louisville, KY., Mrs. Jacquelin Rettinghaus, Louisiana, MO., Mrs Nellie May Whorl, Sharon and Ronda Abbott, Alton; a brother, Ernest Wilson Abbott of Kane; a sister, Mrs Mary Flamm, Decatur; 16 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; two stepsons, George Blair, Godfrey and James Blair, Seminole, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Mrs Frances Stamper, Alton; seven step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ethel Erthal.

ABBOTT, Stephen Wayne, born 14-07-1949, Green County, Illinois, died 27-10-1978, buried 29-10-1978, Oak Grove Cem. Stephen Wayne Abbott, 29, of 137 Roberts St., Jerseyville was pronounced dead at the scene of a one-car accident on route 109 south of the city limits at 12:10 p.m. Oct. 27. Abbott was employed at Owens-Illinois Glass Co. He was born July 14, 1949 in Carrollton, a son of William H. and Georgia Mae White Abbott. Abbott was a past vice-president of Local No 40 Glass Bottle Blowers Assn. and a member of the Eagles Lodge. He is survived by his wife, the former Patricia Russell whom he married Feb. 17, 1968; Three daughters, Stephanie, 10, Elizabeth five, and Amanda, who was born Oct. 24; three brothers, Preston Brown and Robert Abbott, both of Stephensville, Tex., Norman Abbott of South Carolina; a sister, Garentta Schumann of Oklahoma City, Okla. Services were held Monday afternoon at Jacoby Bros. funeral home with the Rev Frank Goss officiating, Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery.
ABBOTT, Earl Edison, born 04-02-1912, Greene County, Illinois, died 29-10-1983, buried 00-00-1983, Lax Cemetery. Earl Edison Abbott, 71, 923 S. State St., Jerseyville died at 2:15 a.m. Oct 29 at Jersey Community Hospital. He was born Feb. 4, 1912 in Greene County to the late Edison L. Abbott and Hattie Meyers Dunham. The World War II veteran retired as sweeper from Peavey Mills in 1972. His survivors are three brothers, Alvin, Richard and James, all of Jerseyville; five sisters, Ethel Sprowel, Peoria, AZ., Thelma Varble, Carrollton, Catherine Abbott, Jerseyville, Alice Mapes, Troy, Edith Kincaid, Meadowbrook. Services were conducted Monday morning at Jacoby Funeral Home by the Rev. Wayne Pendleton with burial in Lax Cemetery near Jerseyville. Lax Cemetery has been named as a memorial.
ABBOTT, Edison Lynn, born 02-08-1885, Greene County, Illinois, died 06-04-1947, buried 09-04-1947, Lax Cemetery. Edison Lynn Abbott, a farmer of the Kane vicinity, died Easter Sunday Morning, April 6, at nine-thirty o’clock at the home of his daughters on East Arch Street in Jerseyville. Mr. Abbott had been in ill health since last August and for the past four months had made his home in Jerseyville with his daughters. He was the son of the late Albert A., and Elizabeth Seago Abbott and was born in Greene County, August 2, 1885, his age at the time of death was 61 years 8 months and 4 days. He is survived by five sons, Earl Edison, Christy Lynn and Richard Lee Abbott of Kane, Alvin Andrew Abbott of East Alton and James Lowery Abbott of Jerseyville, and five daughters, Mrs William Sprowel of Phoenix, AZ, Miss Catherine Sarah Abbott of Jerseyville, Mrs Donald Varble of Eldred and Miss Alice Ruth Abbott of Alton. He also leaves four brothers, Howard Abbott of Jerseyville, Albert and Sam Abbott of Kane and Gilbert Abbott of Fieldon; two sisters, Mrs. John Williams and Mrs. Jesse Ashlock of Kane, nine grandchildren and one great grand-daughter. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, April 9, at two o’clock at the Bethany Baptist Church northwest of Jerseyville. Reverend James Monroe of White Hall officiated at the rites and interment was in Lax Cemetery.
ABBOTT, Robert Lee, born 00-00-1938, Illinois, died 04-01-1984, buried 00-01-1984, Jerseyville, Illinois. Robert Lee Abbott, 47, of White Hall was pronounced dead on arrival at 8:15 p.m. Jan 4 at White Hall Hospital where he was taken following a two-car accident five miles north of White Hall on route 106. The Jerseyville native was the son of Thelma Greene Birch of Kane and the Late William S. Abbott. His survivors are his wife, the former Mildred Jean Scoggins whom he married on March 1, 1977 in Jerseyville; mother; three daughters, Nancy Abbott of Jerseyville, Averyl Abbott, Jacksonville, and Katrina Abbott, at home; a son, Eddie, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two stepdaughters, Jeanie Ann Dabbs and Christine JoAnn Dabbs, both at home; a stepson, Patrick Allen Dabbs, at home; a brother, Norman, of Columbia, S.C.; two grandchildren. Services were held Saturday morning at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.

Funeral services for Maudie Alvina Abbott, 81, of rural route, Kane will be held this afternoon (Thursday) at 1:30 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. Garland Williams officiating. Her death occurred April 17 at boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. Interment was in Kane Cemetery. She was born December 2, 1891 in Jersey County the daughter of Marion and Elzina Elizabeth Burch Keown. Her husband was the late Samuel L. Abbott. Her survivors include eight daughters, Mrs. Frank (Effie) Polito, Detroit, Michigan, Mrs Eylene Walthers, Justice, Mrs Robert (Clara) Smith, Thayer, Mrs Elzina Morris, Lebanon, N.J., Mrs. Harold (Ellen) Holmes, Carrollton, Mrs Marion (Eunice) Dustman, Godfrey, Mrs William (Betty) Walters, Las Animas, Colorado, and Mrs Lindel (Wanda) Wilkinson, Kane; five sons, Leo, William, and Samuel of Kane, Alonzo of Jerseyville, Robert of Milwaukee, Wis.; 55 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; one sister, Eva Keown of St. Louis. Her husband and one son preceded her in death. Visitation was held at Jacoby Funeral Home.

Funeral home by the Rev. A. A. Edebuhr. burial was in Lax Cemetery. He died at 12:20 p.m. on May 5 at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. A farmer, he was born on April 12, 1883 in Greene County, a son of Albert A. and Elizabeth Seago Abbott. His survivors include eight daughters, Mrs. Pauline Turner, Mrs. Tillie Luke, Mrs. Ernest (Drusilla) Hetzel, Mrs. Tony (Irene) Scoggins, Mrs. Peggy Beauchamp of Jerseyville; Mrs. James (Emeline) Crotchett and Mrs. Ruby Postlewait of Kane and Mrs. Joe (Wreatha) Webb of Casa Grande, Ariz.; two sons, William H. Abbott of Jerseyville and James E. Abbott of Caulfield, Mo.; 28 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Albert A. Abbott of Kane. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Dora M. Edwards who died in 1941; one daughter and one son.

Final rites were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home for Samuel Lester Abbott, 78, of Kane whose death occured Sunday morning at Boyd Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. Rev Garland Williams of Jerseyville officiated at the services and interment was in Kane Cemetery. A retired farmer, he was born Feb 18, 1892 in Greene County a son of the late Albert A. and Elizabeth Seago Abbott. His survivors are his wife Maudel A. Keown Abbott; five sons, Leo, Samuel A. and William H. of Kane, Alonzo of Jerseyville, and Herschel R. of Milwaukee, Wis.; eight daughters, Mrs Elzina Morris, Jerseyville, Mrs Ellen Holmes, Carrollton, Mrs Eunice Dustman, Godfrey, Mrs Wanda Wilinson, Kane, Mrs Effie Polito, Detroit, Michigan, Mrs Elplena Walthers, Chicago, Mrs Clara Smith, Thayer, and Mrs Betty Walters, Los Animas, CO; 55 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Albert A. Abbott of Kane and Howard Abbott of Jerseyville; and one sister, Mrs Emily Ashlock of Kane. His parents, one son, two brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Funeral Home.
ABBOTT, Mrs A., Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs. A. A. Abbott, aged 64, died at her home Wednesday morning about 8:30 of acute gastritis and Bright’s disease. The funeral will be held from the Baptist Church Friday afternoon. The Rev. R. Carney officiated. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Funeral Home with the Rev. Peter Ely officiating. Burial was in Kane cemetery. His death occurred at 4:50 p.m. Dec. 10 at Boyd Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. born Nov. 3, 1888 in Greene County, he was a son of the late Albert Andrew and Elizabeth Seago Abbott. He taught 31 years in Greene County Grade schools, Pearl High School and Kane High School. Abbott was the oldest member and 70-year member of the Kane Baptist Church. He was a Mason for over 50 years, Grand King Solomon Lodge No. 197 and past master, 1922 and 1972 and was a past patron of Eastern Star Elizabeth Chapter No. 17. Wayne Pendleton with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. The World War II Army veteran died at 4:28 a.m. Nov. 10 at Christian Hospital Northeast. He was born Sept. 18, 1911 in Jersey County, a son of Howard and Dora Edwards Abbott and was a retired construction laborer. His survivors include his wife, Georgia White Abbott; two sons, Norman Abbott of Columbia, S.C. and Robert Lee Abbott, White Hall; one stepdaughter, Garnetta Schumann, Oklahoma City, Okla.; one brother, James Abbott, Jerseyville; seven sisters, Pauline Turner, Irene Scoggins, Drusilla Hetzel, Peggy Powell, Jerseyville, Emaline Crotchett and Ruby Postelwait of Kane and Wretha Webb of Casa Grande, Ariz., 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
ABBOTT, Dora, born 26-06-1892, Greene County, Illinois, died 20-02-1941, buried 00-02-1941. Jersey Democrat News, Feb. 21, 1941. Mrs. Dora Abbott, wife of Howard Abbot, died Thursday Morning, Feb 20 at 8:40 o’clock at her home on Pleasant Street in Jerseyville. She had been ill since Monday. Mrs. Abbott was the daughter of the late William Edwards and Mrs. Ellen Richert and was born June 26, 1892 in Kane. She was aged 48 years, 7 months and 24 days. Surviving Mrs. Abbott in addition to her husband are ten children, Mrs. Pauline Tucker and Mrs. Emiline Crotchett of Kane, William Abbott of Jerseyville, Mrs. George Luke of Benton MS., Miss Drusilla Abbott, Mrs. Emmett Scoggins, Misses Ruby, Retha and Peggy Abbott of Jerseyville and James Abbott of Edwardsville. She also leaves her mother, Mrs. Ellen Richert of Bernie, MO., two brothers, Clarence Richert of Bernie, Mo., and Vernon Richert of Granite City; five sisters, Mrs. Ruby Glass and Miss Gussie Richert of Bernie, Mo., Mrs. Mabel Marler and Mrs. Viola Tinkler of Nameoki, and Mrs. Emma Seago of Fieldon, and ten Grandchildren.
James ABBOTT, a young man who has been working for Samuel Snedeker, Sr., shot and instantly killed himself last week (Wednesday) while out hunting near Plainview, where he had gone to spend the holidays. He stood leaning on his gun, talking with his companions, when it slipped, the hammer striking the ground with sufficient force to discharge the gun, the contents passing in at the right eye blowing the entire top of his head off. The deceased was eighteen years old. Published January 7, 1876.
ABELN, Idabell, Missouri, died 23-03-1988, buried 27-03-1988, Oak Grove Cemetery. Idabell Abeln, 63, died at 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, 1988, at Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. She had been a cook for Mahollands Cafe in Jerseyville, and retired as a waitress from Derby Cafe in Jerseyville in 1972. born in Moscow Mills, MO., she was the daughter of the late Lan and Margaret Elizabeth (Palmer) Kinion. Her husband, Charles Matthew Dixon, died in 1943. She later married John Henry Abeln, who died in 1957. Surviving are a son, Charles Dixon of Medora; six stepsons, Kenneth Freer, Leuis, Jim and Bobby Joe Abeln, all of Athens, John Abeln of Iowa, and Paul Abeln of Tolona; four stepdaughters, Charlotte Ethell of Athens, Pauline Moran of Cottage Hills, Helen Gwillim of Alton and Peggy Hurt of Pekin; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; 20 stepgrandchildren; three sisters, Ethel Bales of Arkansas, Ruby Morris of Elsberry, MO., and Margie Grigsby of Wyoming; and a brother, Frank Kinion of Elsberry, MO. Visitation will be 4-9 p.m. Saturday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. William Hammock officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association.
ACCARIO, Nicholas, born Italy, died 17-11-1947, buried 22-11-1947, St. Francis Xavier. Nicholas Accario of Chicago, former well-known fruit dealer of Jerseyville, died at eleven-thirty o’clock Monday evening, November 17, at St. Anne’s Hospital in Chicago where he had been a patient since suffering a fractured hip in a fall several days ago. The body of Mr. Accario will be brought to Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville Friday where friends may call after three o’clock in the afternoon. Funeral services will be held at St. Francis Xavier Church in this city Saturday morning, November 22, at nine o’clock with Reverend Father John J. Clancy, celebrant of the Requiem Mass. Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Mr. Accario, a native of Italy, came to Jerseyville as a young man and operated a fruit stand for many years. His first location was on West Pearl Street and he later moved to State Street where he operated the fruit market on the first floor and the family resided in living quarters on the second floor of the building which is now occupied by Bert’s Hardware Company. The family moved to Chicago twenty-two years ago. The deceased at the time of death was eighty-one years, two months and nine days old. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Accario; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Johnsen, Mrs. Lena White, Mrs. Josephine Minogue and Miss Virginia Accario of Chicago; three sons, Michael Accario of Alton, Nicholas Accario of Geneva and Francis Accario of Chicago, and seven grandchildren.

Funeral Mass for Francis Accario, 72, Phoenix, AZ., was celebrated on Saturday, Oct 24, at St. Francis Xavier Church in Jerseyville, Father Patrick Morrow, celebrant, Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery. Accario was born in Jerseyville, June 13, 1909 the son of the late Nicholas and Mary Gilardi Accario. He is survived by two brothers, Michael Accario sr., of Godfrey and Nicholas Accario of Geneva and four sisters, Mary Johnson of Tampa, FL., Lena White of Phoenix, AZ., and Josephine Minogue and Virginia Accario both of Chicago.

ADAMS, Emilie B., born 12-04-1906, Missouri, died 30-03-1978, buried 00-04-1978, Mt. Hope Cemetery. The funeral of Mrs. Emilie B. Adams, 71, of R 2, Godfrey was held Saturday morning at the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Godfrey with the Rev. Walter H. Krebs officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Belleville. She died at 9:30 a.m. March 30 at her home. Mrs. Adams had been a school teacher in Alton and Jerseyville schools. She was born April 12, 1906 in St. Louis, a daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Emil R. Jaeger. Her survivors include her husband, Henry Adams whom she married in 1927; one son, Richard of Godfrey; three daughters, Mrs. Virginia Ilch, Godfrey; Mrs. Elise Anne Sode, Carbondale and Mrs. Jane Bruker, Edwardsville; 16 grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Ann Elise Rothe of Eldorado, Ark. and Mrs. Virginia Ortwein of Warsaw, Wis. The Madison County Association for Retarded Citizens has been designated as a memorial.

Born in Jerseyville, daughter of Fred and Louise Brandt Hund. Married George C. Adams on Sept. 20, 1920 in Carlinville, IL. He died November 8, 1981. Leaves a son, Bob, of Jerseyville, daughter Margaret Rowden of Rosewood Hts, 13 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was born May 6, 1927, in Medora to the late Willis Adams and Ann Taylor. He was a laborer. Survivors include brothers Bob of Brussels and Bud of Phoenix; and sisters Clarabell Woods of Alton, Mildred Kraushaar of Jerseyville and Georgia Abbott and Hazel Abbott, both of Kane. Visitation was May 20 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The funeral was May 21 at the funeral home with th Rev. Louis Kappler officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. There is no memorial.

George Clarence Adams, 81, of R 3, Jerseyville died at 9:40 a.m. Nov 8 at St. John’s Mercy Hospital, St Louis County. He was a retired retail salesman for the former Jacobs Lumber Co. born Nov 29, 1899, he was a son of the late George and Olive Brooks Adams. His survivors include his wife, the former Emma Hund whom he married Sept 20, 1920 in Carlinville; one son, Robert Adams, Alton; a daughter, Margaret Rowden, Rosewood Heights; one brother, Charles Adams, Granite City; a sister, Alice Schattgen, Biloxi, MS.; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. His parents, two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Russell Shaw will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
ADAMS, N. L., born 03-02-1796, Windham County, Vermont, died 00-05-1876, buried 00-05-1876, Jerseyville Republican, May 1876. N. L. Adams died at his home, 81 yrs of age. He was born in Halifax, Windham Co., Vermont, Feb. 3, 1796. Married in 1833 and settled on a farm in Jersey Co., 1849. It had two runs of burs. Married three times and father of ten children. Services at the Methodist Church under the auspices of the Masons.
ADAMS, Willis E., died 12-07-1983, buried 00-07-1983, Oak Grove Cemetery. Willis “Junior” E. Adams, 54, of 606 Wabash, died at 12:10 a.m. Tuesday at Alton Memorial Hospital. He was a laborer, born in Medora, son Mahala Ann (Taylor) Adams Burnett of Alton and the late Willis Adams. She was a member of Jerseyville Moose Lodge, member and past president of Jersey Community Hospital Auxiliary and assistant chairperson of the Jerseyville Cancer Crusade. born at Hillview, she was a daughter of the late Peter S. and Huldah M. (Blackwell) Staats. On Sept. 1, 1951, she married Lloyd Adams at Pocahontas, Ark. He survives. Preceding her in death were a grandson; a great-grandson; two sisters, Ruth Breezly and Myrtle Baker; and a brother, Robert Staats. ADNEY, Thomas. GRAFTON. Death of Civil War Veteran. Thomas Adney, age 80 years, died at his home in Elsah Wednesday morning, May 22, after a brief illness. Mrs. Adney was well known throughout the county having lived in Jersey county many years. He was a civil war veteran. He is survived by two sons and one daughter. The funeral services were held at the home Friday morning at 10 oclock. The Rev. Mr. Rhein, pastor of the Grafton M. E. church, officiated. The body was taken to Mellville where it was laid to rest. Died at home of daughter, Emma Dyer, 83 years born in Hanover, Germany March 2, 1829 and confirmed in Lutheran church at age 13. In 1851 came to U. S. making trip in slow sailing vessel taking 13 weeks, during which time storms and other dangers were met. Landed in New Orleans in September and later came to Jerseyville, IL. Married J. G. Arkebauer who died in 1895. Eleven children, two dying in infancy and Henry dying in 1895. Six daughters and two sons. Jacob of Kane, Edward of Delhi, Mrs. James Sowers and Mrs J. P. AKARD, Lurton, died 21-08-1975, buried 23-08-1975. A memorial service was held at the Grace Episcopal Church in Kirkwood, MO., on Aug. 23 for Lurton Akard, formerly of Jerseyville. His death occurred on Aug. 21. His wife is the former Norma Barry. The Akards formerly operated a grocery store in the west part of Jerseyville. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, both of California.

AKARD, Margaret, born 15-06-1861, Jersey County, Illinois, died 22-12-1955, buried 27-12-1955, Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs Margaret Akard, one of the older residents of Jersey County, died Thursday night, December 22, in Alton, following an extended period of failing health. Funeral services for the non-agenarian were held at the Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon, December 27, with Reverend F. W. Schwarzlose officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs Akard was born in Jersey County, June 15, 1861, a daughter of the late Cam and Delia Peck Lurton. Her age at the time of death was ninety-four years, six months and seven days. Mrs Akard and her late husband, Benjamin Akard, were in the grocery business in Jerseyville for over fifty-two years and operated a neighborhood store in the western part of the city. The decedent was a charter member of the Jerseyville Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and in her younger years was an active member of the Steelman Camp, Royal Neighbors of America in Jerseyville. She is survived by one son, Lurton Akard of Kirkwood; one sister, Mrs. Blanche Cononi of Italy, two grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were a son, Edward Akers; and a sister, Marvell Brooks. The body was cremated. His survivors are his wife, Diana, of Jerseyville; three sons, Arthel jr. of Alton, Steven of Jerseyville and Michael, St. Louis; three daughters, Cynthia Wielgus, Granite City, Marsha Akers and Vickie Madison, Jerseyville; five grandchildren. ALBERT, Anna Crocker, died 03-12-1922, buried Piasa Cemetery. Mrs Fred W. Albert dies of Scarlet Fever. Contracted Disease from little daughter. Mrs Anna Crocker Albert, wife of Fred W. Albert of Fidelity, died at her home Sunday, Dec. 3rd, at 9:15 a.m. at the age of 26 years, 8 months and 24 days. Her death was due to scarlet fever which she contracted while caring for her little daughter, Emily, who was ill of the disease. Mrs Albert had been ill only a few days, but the disease was of such character that medical aid was of no avail. Mrs Albert is survived by her husband and three daughters, Emily, aged 5, Mabel aged 2, and Rosemary who is six months old. The deceased was a daughter of Carl E. Crocker of Piasa. Private funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o’clock at the Piasa Cemetery, the Rev. J. C. burns, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Shipman officiating. Mr and Mrs Tony Albert and Mrs Frank Albert went to Piasa to attend the funeral of their sister-in-law, Mrs Albert.

She was born April 4, 1913 in Rosedale a daughter of Mrs. Anna Dabbs of Jerseyville and the late Andrew J. Bub” Dabbs. Mrs Aldaco was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary. In addition to her mother she is survived by a son, Virgil A. Fryman of Godfrey; a brother Arthur Dabbs of Jerseyville; two sisters, Mrs Christ (Dorothy) Beiermann of Jerseyville and Mrs Lucille McCaherty of Atwater; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son. Visitation was held at Gubser Funeral Home. The First United Methodist Church has been designated as a memorial.

He was a veteran of WW II and a member of the Knights of Columbus of Wood River. He was employed as a tractor driver for Olin Mfg. in Alton. There are no survivors. Clifford H. “Basket” Alexander, 80 died at 2:10 a.m. Tuesday, March 7, 1989, at Jerseyville Care Center. Alexander was a WW II Army veteran. He was a construction driver with teamsters local 525 for 20 years, retiring in 1971, and owned White Way Cafe in Jerseyville from 1940 – 50. born in Fidelity, he was the son of the late Sanford and Verna Reno Alexander. On June 11, 1927, in Jerseyville, he married the former Thelma Woolsey. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Dr. Charles Alexander of Jerseyville; two daughters, Patsy Moore and Ruth Ann Cory, both of Jerseyville; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Visitation is 4 – 9 p.m. today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are 1 p.m. Thursday with Rev. Larry Hayes officiating. Mrs. Edith Aljets of Alton, a native of Jersey County, was pronounced dead on arrival Sunday at St. Joseph Hospital in that city. Mrs. Aljets had been a patient at St. Anthony’s Hospital for ten days and was released five days prior to her death Sunday. Mrs. Aljets was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William F. Loellke and was born in Jersey County August 26, 1894. She had been a resident of Alton for fifty years. Her marriage to Henry Aljets took place in April 1915. He is presently a patient at St. Anthony’s. Surviving her in addition to her husband are four brothers and three sisters, Albert, Carl, Frank and James Loellke, Mrs. Bertha Bridges and Mrs. Nellie Dickenson of Jerseyville, and Mrs. Emma Davis of St. Louis. She was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Final rites were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the Gent Funeral Home in Alton with Rev. Leland Lochhaas, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Alton, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.

Allen, 87, of Jerseyville, died Jan. 23 at Jerseyville Care Center in Jerseyville. She was born Nov. 6, 1898, in Macoupin County to the late Frank Hopper and Margaret Hopper. She married Lawrence Allen on July 23, 1916, in Macoupin County. She was a fancy stitcher for the International Shoe Co. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Jerseyville and Royal Neighbors. Survivors include son Vorhis “Gabby” Allen of Jerseyville; daughters Gladys Geraldine Burmester of Godfrey and Vera Almata Soffray of Jerseyville; brother Scott Hopper of Chesterfield; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, a daughter, her parents, four brothers and a sister. Visitation was Jan 25 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Democrat – August 13, 1885, Joshua Allen died at his residence in this city (Jerseyville) Sunday morning, August 11, 1885, aged 78 years after a lingering illness of many years. He was born in Sackett Harbor, NY, Oct. 9, 1806, where he spent his youth. At the age of 25 he emigrated to this county where he has ever since resided. Shortly after his moving here he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Cope, who bid adieu to the cares of this world a decade in advance of her husband. He was highly respected and esteemed by his numerous acquaintances who ever regarded him as an honest, upright companion. He was ever remained steadfast to principle, and was a life-long democrat. His funeral took place Monday afternoon from his residence, Rev. Moscrip officiating.

Allen was a tank foreman at Owens-Illinois Glass Co., and was a World War II veteran. He was a member of the Gospel Assembly Church. born Dec. 5, 1922, he was the son of Virgil and Lillie Phillips Allen of Chambersburg. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary K. Scott Allen; a son, Virgil of Brush, Co., one daughter, Mrs Diana Everlin of Jerseyville; three grandchildren; two brothers, LLoyd Allen of Jackson, Mo. and Donald Allen of Meredosia, two sisters, Mrs. Chester (Elsie) Todd of Meredosia and Mrs. James (Marilyn) Bishop of Beardstown; and his mother, Mrs Lillie Logan. Visitation was held at Jacoby Funeral Home. Military rites were conducted at the graveside by the Meredosia American Legion.

Mr. Allen, a son of the late Hugh and Helena Krause Allen, was born in Jersey County, and his age at the time of death was sixty-two years, nine months, and fourteen days. His survivors are his wife, Irma Stith Allen, a former teacher at the Jersey Community High School and now a counselor at the Alton Senior High School; one son, Paul Eugene Allen, a student at the University of Missouri School of Mines in Rolla, Missouri; a daughter, Rita, a student at the Jersey Community High School; two brothers, Hubert J. Allen and Robert J. Allen of Jerseyville; and one sister, Mrs. John (Mary) Clarke of Florissant, Missouri. He was a member of the Jerseyville Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Worthey Post American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. He had been in the employ of the Conservation Department of the State of Illinois since 1941, with the exception of a period of military service.

Mrs Allen had suffered from a heart malady for several years and had been hospitalized on several occasions. The deceased was a daughter of the late John and Frances Bertman Krause, and was born in Jersey County, February 24, 1877. Her age at the time of death was seventy-six years, eleven months and seventeen days. Mrs Allen is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John Clark of Florissant, MO; six sons, Francis, Thomas W., Eugene, Robert J., and Hubert J. Allen of Jerseyville and Mark A. Allen of Los Angeles, CA., six grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Her husband, Hugh Allen, died thirty-three years ago and she was also preceded in death by one daughter and two sons. Allen, 37, was pronounced dead at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, 1987, at the scene of a truck accident on Illinois Route 267. Allen served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict, and was employed as an adjuster at Olin Corp. in East Alton. He was born in Beardstown, the son of Mary (Scott) Allen of Jerseyville and the late Herman Allen. On Jan 16, 1971, in Jerseyville, he married the former Patricia Taake, who survives. In addition to his wife and mother, surviving are a daughter, Mindy at home; two sons, Brian and Shane, both at home; a sister, Diana McEvers of Jerseyville; and his maternal grandmother, Anna Scott of Jerseyville. The Mass of the Resurrection for Mr Allen was celebrated at ten o’clock Monday morning, November 15, at St Francis Xavier Church. Reverend Father Francis D. Lee officiated and burial was in St Francis Cemetery. Visitation hours were held at the Gubser Funeral Home Sunday afternoon and evening and the Rosary was recited there at eight o’clock in the evening. Mr Allen, a son of the late Richard and Julia Duggan Allen,was born in Jerseyville, September 22, 1905, and had spent his entire life in this community. In addition to his farming interests, Mr. Allen had served on the Jersey County Board of Supervisors since April 1957, and had been its chairman for several terms. Mr Allen became Assessor in Jersey Township in January 1946, succeeding the late Edward Bray, and continued in this capacity until 1957 when he was named Supervisor in Jersey. At the time of his death he was also serving as chairman of the Jersey County Housing Authority. He was long active in the work of the Jerseyville Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and on the local level he had served as Exalted Ruler and Trustee. He had also been District Deputy of the Elks and on the local level he had served as Exalted Ruler and Trustee. ALLEN, Stella May, born 04-05-1894, Jersey County, Illinois, died 27-09-1973, buried, Oak Grove Cemetery. Funeral services were held at Gubser Funeral Home at two o’clock Saturday afternoon for Mrs Stella May Allen, 901 Giddings Avenue, Jerseyville. Rev Paul Lynn of Pleasant Hill officiated and Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Visitation was held at the Gubser Funeral Home. The death of Mrs Allen occurred at four twenty-five o’clock Thursday morning at the Memorial Hospital in Alton. She was born in Jersey County, May 4, 1894, a daughter of the late Frank and Eliza Williams King, Sr. Her survivors include eight sons, Wesley, Hubert, Floyd, Lloyd, and Lester of Jerseyville; Charles of Mesquite, TX; and Delbert and John of Dow; three daughters, Mrs Harold (Madeita) Bauman of Jerseyville, Mrs Virgil (Mary) Boomer of Klamath, Oregon, and Mrs Cletus (Helen) Meuth of Kane; a brother, Frank King of Jerseyville; a sister, Mrs Ella Cummings of Alton; 35 grandchildren, and nineteen great grandchildren.
ALLEN, Paul Eugene, born 24-05-1954, Madison County, Illinois, died 27-05-1983, buried St. Francis Cemetery. Paul Eugene Allen, 29, 204 Andrew Ave., Jerseyville died at 1:16 pm May 27 in the emergency room at Jersey Community Hospital after falling 20′ off a forklift at Gorman Bros. Readymix, inc., where he was employed. He was born May 24, 1954 in Alton, son of Irma Stith Allen and the late Eugene Allen. He was a member of St Francis Xavier Church, Knights of Columbus, Jerseyville Moose Lodge and Teamsters Local 525. He is survived by his wife, the former Marsha Ford whom he married May 1, 1982; his mother; and a sister Rita Allen of Dixon. Funeral Mass was celebrated May 30 at St Francis Xavier Church with Father Patrick Morrow celebrant. Burial was in St Francis Cemetery. The family has designated the St Francis Xavier Church Fund or Easter Seals as memorials. A coroner’s inquest is pending, Jacoby arrangements.
ALLEN, Jesse F., born 04-01-1892, Jersey County, Illinois, died 00-01-1973, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Jesse F. Allen of 901 Giddings Ave, Jerseyville, died at one o’clock Saturday morning at Garnet Nursing Home on West Pearl Street where he had been a patient for some time. Funeral services for Mr Allen were held at two o’clock Monday afternoon at the Gubser Funeral Home with Rev Harry Frazer officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mr Allen, son of the late John and Mary T. Bright Allen, was born in Jersey County and was eighty-one years old on the fourth of this month. He was a retired concrete finisher. His survivors are his wife Mrs Stella King Allen; eight sons, Wesley, Hubert, Floyd, Lloyd and Lester of Jerseyville; Charles of Mesquite, TX, and Delbert and John of Dow; three daughters, Mrs Joe (Madeita) Baumann of Jerseyville, Mrs Virgil (Mary) Boomer of Klamath Falls, Oregon, and Mrs Cletus (Helen) Meuth of Kane; one brother, Lawrence Allen of Jerseyville, and four sisters, Mrs Viola Hanlin, Miss Mary Allen, and Mrs Susan Wallace of Jerseyville, and Mrs Alice Miller of California; thirty-one grandchildren; and eighteen great grandchildren.

ALLEN, Ruth V., born 00-00-1927, Greene County, Illinois, died 00-11-1985, buried Kane Cemetery. Kane – Ruth V. Allen, 58, died at 10:50 am Sunday at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis. She was born in Fieldon, a daughter of the late Roy L. and Edna (Murray) Devening. On Jan 21, 1948, in Kane, she married James E. Allen, who survives. Also surviving, are one daughter, Sherry Wise of Robinson; one grandson; and two sisters, Lila Cummings of Kane and Mary Jean Aderton of Hardin. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm today at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton, where Eastern Star services will be held at 7 pm. Services will be at the funeral home at 2 pm Wednesday with the Rev Peter Ely officiating. Burial will be in Kane Cemetery.
ALLEN, Marion, born 00-00-1894, Jersey County, Illinois, died 00-01-1917. Marion Allen, age 23, son of Jas Allen, who resides six miles north of Grafton, was killed Saturday morning in an accident at the Ryrie Wholeside Grocery company store in Alton where he was employed. A new elevator had recently been installed in the building and he underestimated its speed. Mr Allen was on the elevator floor which was ascending. He saw a truck moving toward the pit and leaned over the rail to push it back to prevent it falling into the basement. Men standing near yelled a warning but too late as the young man was caught between the floor of the elevator and the floor of the second story of the building. His chest was crushed in before the machinery was stopped and he died soon afterwards. Mr Allen was well known in Jersey County, especially in the vicinity of Elsah and Otterville where he resided before his marriage to a young lady in Elsah. He taught the class of young men known as the “Hustlers” in the Otterville church after the departure of George Noble, who came to Jerseyville two years ago. The young man had worked in Alton two years. He leaves a wife and two children, one four years old and the other one. The body was shipped to Elsah and funeral services were held there Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev Mr. Fahnestock of the M. E. Church.

Leo Lawrence Allen, 79, of 502 Maple Ave., Jerseyville, a retired painter, died at 5:20 pm on June 16 at Jersey Community Hospital. ALLEN, Elmer E., born 21-07-1904, Macoupin County, Illinois, died 15-12-1979, buried Upper Alton Cemetery. Private services for family members only will be conducted Tuesday morning at Marks Mortuary in Wood River for Elmer E. Allen, 75, of Jerseyville, formerly of East Alton. He died at 2:30 am Dec 15 at Jersey Community Hospital. He was born in Macoupin County July 21, 1904, and married Fay Stinnett in 1922 in Greene County. Allen was a retired machinist for Olin Corp. His survivors are his wife; two sons, Dale of Alton and Ronald of Godfrey, two grandchildren and a brother, John Allen of Jerseyville. Burial will be in Upper Alton Cemetery, Friends may call at Marks Mortuary after 4 p.m. Monday.
ALLEN, Nellie Wade, born 09-03-1895, Jersey County, Illinois, died 06-11-1982, buried Glendale Memorial. Funeral services for Nellie Wade Allen, 87, of Pekin were held Nov. 9 in Pekin with the Reverend Norman Dalton of the United Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial was in the Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin. Mrs Allen was born March 9, 1895 in Jerseyville, the daughter of William and Dorcas Wade. She died Nov. 6, in a convalescent home in Pekin. Surviving are nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters and two brothers.
ALLEN, Lawrence, born 28-03-1898, Jersey County, Illinois, died 07-08-1964, buried 16-08-1964, Scenic Hill Cemetery. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home at ten o’clock Monday morning for Lawrence Allen, farmer of the Grafton area, whose death occurred Friday, August 7. Father Paul P. Heinen officiated at the services and burial was in the Scenic Hill Cemetery, Grafton. Mr Allen, a lifelong resident of Jersey County, was born March 28, 1898, a son of the late Otto and Maria Cresswell Allen. His age at the time of death was sixty-six years, four months, and nine days. He was a veteran of WW I, and was an active member of the American Legion. Surviving Mr Allen are his wife, Mrs Birdie C. LaMarsh Allen; one son, Warren E. Allen of Grafton; seven grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs Lena Wallace of Alton and Mrs Clarence (Addie) Noble of Grafton.
ALLEN, Virgil Leo, born Macoupin County, Illinois, died 00-04-1968, buried St. Francis Cemetery. Virgil Leo Allen of 1043 West Pine Street, Jerseyville, a clerk in the local Post Office, died at nine fifty-five o’clock Monday morning at the Jersey Community Hospital where he had been a medical patient. He had been ill for sometime. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where the Rosary was recited on Tuesday evening. Requiem Mass was celebrated at nine-thirty o’clock Wednesday morning at the Church of the Holy Ghost by Father Robert Heintz. Burial was in St Francis Cemetery. Mr Allen was born in Macoupin County, a son of Lawrence and Gladys Hopper Allen, and his age at the time of death was fifty year, ten months and twenty-three days. He was educated in the Jerseyville school system and during his high school days was one of the star basketball players. He served with the armed forces during WWII. Surviving Mr Allen are his wife, Dorothy Pegue Allen; a son, Timothy, and a daughter, Kimberly, at home; his parents, Mr and Mrs Lawrence Allen of Jerseyville; and two sisters, Mrs Andrew (Almeta) Soffray of Jerseyville and Mrs Geraldine Burmeister of Alton. He was a member of Worthey Post, American Legion, and the Jerseyville Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.

Allen, a retired farmer of Otter Creek Township, died at 6:05 a.m. Wednesday, April 24 at his home following an extended period of ill health. The deceased was the son of the late William and Martha Askew Allen, and was born in Jersey County. His age at the time of his death was 75 years, 10 months and 24 days. Mr Allen is survived by his wife, Mrs Laura Allen; one daughter, Mrs Floyd Darr of Alton; one step-son, Frank Merritt of Alton; one step-daughter, Mrs Fred May of Alton; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and 3 sisters, Mrs Laura Garrells of St Louis, Mrs Catherine Cresswell of California and Mrs Fannie Hughes of Alton. Funeral services will be held at the Salem Church, Sunday, April 28 at 2:30 p.m., Rev Harry Nease of Grafton will officiate and interment will be in the American Legion Cemetery (later named Scenic Hill Cemetery).

A funeral mass for Dorothy Loretta Allen, 63, of 605 Wabash, Jerseyville, was celebrated Monday morning at Holy Ghost Church with Father William Hembrow as celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery. She died at 6:20 a.m. Aug 6 at St Luke’s East Hospital, St. Louis, after a lengthy illness. She was born in Jersey County Dec. 28, 1918, a daughter of the late George Fred and Mary Levene Pegue. Her husband, Virgil L. Allen, whom she married in June, 1940, died April 8, 1968. She is survived by a son and daughter, Timothy Allen of Jerseyville and Kimberly Allen of St. Louis and one sister, Nellie Carroll of Jerseyville.

He was self-employed as a farmer and a member of the Knights of Columbus for 86 years. Surviving are a niece, Joan Murray of Jerseyville; and a nephew, Richard Allen of Jerseyville. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward T. and James R. Allen. Visitation is 4-9 p.m. Monday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville where there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St Francis Xavier Church in Jerseyville with the Rev Henry Schmidt as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.

Jerseyville – Fay Irene Allen, 78, former East Alton resident, died at 1:35 p.m. Monday at Jersey Community Hospital. She was born in Wrights, daughter of the late P. M. and Arie Edna (Maberry) Stinnett. She married Elmer E. Allen in 1922 in Greene County, and he died Dec. 15, 1979. She is survived by two sons, Dale of Alton and Ronald of Godfrey; three grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Wednesday at Marks Mortuary in Wood River where funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Todd Taylor at 3 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Upper Alton Cemetery.

Jerseyville farmer Robert John Allen, 71, died Jan. 20 at Jersey Community Hospital. He was born April 23, 1915, in Jerseyville, the son of the late Hugh and Nellie (Kraus) Allen. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during WWII. He was a member of St Francis Xavier Church in Jerseyville, Moose Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Lefion and Eagles Lodge. The Rosary was recited Jan. 21, and the funeral Mass was Jan. 22 at St Francis Xavier Church with the Rev. Father Patrick Morrow, celebrant. Burial was at St Francis Cemetery. Masses and St Francis Xavier Church have been designated as memorials.
ALLEN, William Henry, born 12-10-1814, Massachusetts, died 08-12-1898, buried 10-12-1898. Jersey County Democrat – Dec. 21, 1898, On the shores of the Atlantic, in New Bedford, Mass., William Henry Allen, son of William Howland Allen and Ruth Parker, was born Oct., 12, 1814. On shores of the Pacific at Pasadena, CA., he died Dec. 8, 1898. His boyhood spent in fathers home in New Bedford, his early manhood at Harvard College from which he graduated in 1835. Entered mercantile business in Philadelphia. Moved to St. Louis. Married Maria Mason, she survives. Rosalie, wife of Dr. E. L. Herriott, Mary who died in infancy, Irene, widow of E. A. Pinero of Hardin, James M. Allen of Grafton, Helen died in infancy, Harry C. Allen of Pasadena, CA., Wm H. Allen, jr., of Los Angeles and Ruth, wife of E. C. Stelle of Pasadena. In 1841 came to Grafton, IL and for 52 years, he was identified with growth and prosperity of Jersey Co. In winter of 1861-62 he was delegate to constitutional convention and in fall of 1871 was elected Senator from District Six. County Judge from 1865 to 1869. Moved to Pasadena in 1862. Funeral on Dec. 10 at his late residence, 151 N. Euclid Ave., by Rev. William McCormack. Remains cremated.
ALLYN, Hester, born 20-01-1818, Illinois, died 00-01-1908. Jersey Democrat – Jan. 16, 1908 – Died at residence of dau. Emma E. Derry, 915 5th St., Mrs. Hester Allyn, widow of Rev. Norman Allyn, aged 89 years, “Mother Allyn” as she was known, was the daughter of John and Eliz. Whitesides Moore, and was born in the old brick house near Wsaterloo, IL., Jan. 20, 1818. Her father being a staunch Methodist, had set apart a large room in his house for a meeting house, and services were held in it for many years. The neighbors came from far and near Saturday evening and remained until Monday evening and were cared for by the Moore household. Amid such environment she was raised. Married Sept 3, 1839 to Rev. Norman Allyn, young Methodist preacher, together they traveled the circuit in Southern Illinois. Rev. Allyn died March 7, 1864. Leaves 2 daughters, Emma Derry and Kate S. Flood of Oakland, CA., and one son Nelson L. Allyn, 5 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren. (taken from Illinois State Register). She was the grandmother of Mrs Harry S. Daniels of Jerseyville.

He died at 6 a.m. on Jan 3 at the Christian Northeast Hospital, St. Louis. He was a custodian at Jersey Community High School. born July 14, 1905 in Missouri, he was a son of Rothwell W. and Lu Anna Belle Potter Alverson and was a member of the State Street Baptist Church. His survivors are one son, Roy Alverson Jr. of St. Louis; a daughter, Mrs Ed (Betty) Geske, Godfrey; six grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs Clyde (Rylie) Pettit of Blackwater, MO., and Nona Lee Alverson and Mrs Edna Heim of Booneville, MO.; one brother, Vernon Alverson of Booneville, MO. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Pearl Wakefield who died May 14, 1977, parents, one daughter and a grand-daughter. Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
