COATES. Died 29-04-1929. Asa E. Coates, of Kane died at the home of his niece, Mrs. Frank Reif. He was 57 years of age. Funeral will be held at the Church of Christ at Kane, with burial at the Jalappa cemetery. He was a father of seven children; Mrs. Virginia Brown, Mrs. Eva Scoggins, Andrew and Ralph Coates. Three preceded him in death. He leaves a widow, Ella Coates, 12 grandchildren, 4 sisters, Mrs. Ella Johnisee and Hassie Whirl of Carrollton, Irene Antrobus of Alton and Jane Cheeks of Luxora, Arkansas, 2 brothers, William of Kane and George Reynolds of Alton
COATNEY. Died 11-03-1971. Services were held at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home at 3 pm. Sunday for Della Mae Coatney of RR 2 Jerseyville. Rev. James Pepper officiated and burial was at Oak Grove Cemetery. The death of Mrs. Coatney occurred at 10:40 pm Thursday at the Jersey Community Hospital where she had been a patient for one day. Mrs. Coatney, a daughter of the late Dave and Virginia Taynor Gray, was born inn Alton and would have marked her 65th birthday anniversary on the 23rd of this month. Her survivors are one son, Nelson R. Coatney of Murraryville; 3 daughters, Mrs. Wm. Sanders of E. Alton, Mrs. Willard Eden of Newbern and Mrs. Harold Kelley of Jerseyville; 23 grandchildren and 10 g-grandchildren; and 1 brother, Charles Gray of Jerseyville. She was preceded in death by her parents, five daughters and one son.

COCHRAN. Died 09-02-1975. Mrs. Edith Cochran, 91, mother of Lonnie Cochran of Jerseyville, died Sunday afternoon, Feb 9, at Pearce Hospital in Eldorado. She was a former resident. In addition to her son, Lonnie, she is survived by another son, James E. Cochran of Granite City; and a daughter, Mrs. Helen Worthey of Eldorado; nine grandchildren; 24 g-grandchildren. Her husband James E. Cochran, died in 1925. Services were conducted Tuesday afternoon, Feb 11, at the Martin Funeral Home in (the rest is missing)
COCKRELL. Died 28-01-1909. Mrs. Catherine Cockrell, oldest child of Nicholas and Catherine Wallace was born in Janesville, Wisc. on 9 Aug 1860. Move to Jersey County when 2 years old. Finished education at Ursuline Convent of Alton. Married Moses Cockrell on March 8 1886. Two daughters, Kathleen and Marion Lucille. They with her husband survive. Lived in St. Louis and Chicago where he had business. She was a noble Christian woman. Remains accompanied by family, Mrs John C. McGrafth and Miss Margaret Dunphy of Louisianna, Mo.
COCKRELL. Died 29-06-1918. The funeral of Frank Burton Cockrell, who died Thursday night, June 29th, at the Royal Alexandria Hospital in Edmonton, Canada, following injuries sustained in a runaway two weeks before at the Cockrell ranch near Lavoy, Canada, was held Thursday afternoon, 4th Jul, at 2:30 from the home of his parents. Mr. and Mrs Elias Cockrell, on South State St. was attended by a very large crowd of sorrowing friends
COCKRELL. Died 00-04-1912. Elias Cockrell and Mrs. M.A. Warren called to Omaha, Neb. to attend the funeral of George Cockrell who died at his home in that city. Formerly of Jerseyville. He also served in the Union Army during the Civil War.
COCKRELL. Died 26-09-1952. Geo. C. Cockrell, retired ice and coal dealer, died Sep 26 at Memorial Hosp in Alton. Son of Elias and Charlotte Knapp Cockrell was born in Jerseyville 5 Mar 1883. 69 years. In the elevator business with his father in Colorado Springs Colo. Survived by one son Master Sergeant Geo. Crogan Cockrell; one brother Dr. Robert Cockrell; 3 grandchildren; one great grandchild. Gubser funeral home. Rev. M. Edward Breed.
COCKRELL. Died 00-11-1888. Miss Hattie Amelia Cockrell, 16 yrs old daughter of Elias and Charlotte E. Cockrell, died of catarhal fever. Funeral from Presbyterian church Rev Tyson.
COCKRELL. Died 19-05-1893. Katy Ann Cockrell nee Utt was born in Scioto Co. OH Aug 9 1815. Marreid Moses Cockrell in 1835 in what was Greene Co. Purchased land and built a residence about one mile from East Newbern which was the family home until the death of Mr. Cockrell in Apr 1882. She then moved to Jerseyville where she resided until her death on Friday, 19 May. 13 children. Funeral services from ME church on 22 May. Rev J. Earp assisted by Rev L C Tyson, burial Bethel cemetery, East Newbern.
COCKRELL. Died 15-04-1882. Moses Cockrell born in Scioto Co., Ohio, Dec. 24 1806 and died Apr. 15 1882. 75 yrs. Moved to Illinois in 1832. Married to Katie Ann Utt and they were married for 49 years. Joined ME church in 1838. In 1875 moved membership to church at East Newburn. His wife and 9 of his children are living.
COCKSHOTT. Died 11-02-1948. Thomas Spencer Cockshott, commercial fisherman and a native of Grafton, died Wednesday, Feb 11, of a heart ailment in St. James Hospital in Pontiac, IL, where he had been a patient for the past five weeks. Mt. Cockshott was the son of the late Spencer and Elizabeth Cockshott and was born in Grafton Sep. 9, 1868. He was aged 79 years, four months and 2 days. The decedent is survived by 3 nephews, Jack Howe of Pontiac, Charles Campbell and Roscoe Baxter, Sr. of Grafton, and two nieces, Mrs. Ellis Bange of Wood River and Mrs. Geo. Carey of Grafton. The body was brought to the Jacoby Brother Chapel in Jerseyville and funeral services were held at that Chapel Sat. afternoon, Feb 14 at 2 o’clock. Rev. Harry E. Nease, pastor of the Grafton Methodist Church, officiated at the rites and burial was in the Amer. Legion Cemetery at Grafton. The pallbearers were Tom O’Neil, Geo. Carey, Jim Freeman and Homer, Ross and Theodore DeSherlia of Grafton.
COFFEE. Died 03-08-1955. Mrs. H.H. McClusky received word last week of the death of her niece, Mrs. Minnie Ashford Coffee of Vernon, Texas, which occurred Wed. afternoon, Aug. 3, in a hospital in Austin, TX, following an extended period of illness. Mrs. Coffee was a daughter of the late James and Mayme White Ashford, and was born in Jersey County. She is survived by one son, Lockwood Coffee of Vernon, TX, twin daughters Mrs. Dorothy Cochran of St. Petersburg, FL, and Mrs. Rose Marie Key of Austin, TX, and tree sisters, Mrs. Rose Dey of Wichita, KS, Mrs. Frances Ashford and Mrs. Georgia Riley of San Francisco, CA. Mrs. Coffee was a cousin of Mrs. Roy Thatcher and Mrs. Clarence Updike, Sr., of Jerseyville. Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 5, in Vernon TX.
COGGER. Died 14-03-1907. Mrs. Nancy Cogger, 75, died at home. Funeral from home, Rev. W.H. Jordoan officiating.
COLEAN. Died 03-01-1884. Charles L. Colean, son of Judge Edwin Colean. Died at family home northwest of Jerseyville. 25 years of age and died from consumption. Moved to Nebraska with wife. Returned to Jerseyville. Funeral from Baptist Church, Rev. Tyson.
COLEAN. Died 11-08-1893. Edward Colean died at home west of town. Became ill during the night. Felt better in the morning so he went out to feed the horses. He came back into the house in great pain and died a few minutes later. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Funeral from home.
COLEAN. Died 21-02-1921. Frank Colean, formerly of Jerseyville, died in St. Louis, Tuesday, Feb 21. The body was brought to Jerseyville on the 7:27 C. & A. train Wednesday evening, and was taken to Jacoby Undertaking Parlors. No arrangements for the funeral have been made as yet. Mr. Colean is survived by 2 daughters, Miss Pearl Colean and Miss Naomi Colean, the latter of St. Louis. He was a member of Hickory Grove Camp M.W. of A. of Jerseyville. The following pathetic little story of Mr. Colean’s death is from Wednesday’s Post Dispatch: Frank W. Colean, 55 years old was found dead at 4 pm yesterday in a room he had rented a few days ago at 1902 Hickory St., with gas escaping from a hose, one end of which was attached to the open jet and the other end lying on a pillow near Colean’s head. Policemen broke into the room after Mrs. John Whaley, proprietor of the place, had found the door locked. Colean was not known at the rooming house. His daughter, Miss Naomi Colean identified the body at the morgue.
COLEAN. Died 00-01-1904. Harry Winfield Colean, died at home of his mother, Mrs. Nancy Colean on Wednesday. Funeral from home with Dr. J. A. Ford serving. Born Aug. 9th 1872. Was 31 years of age. Student at Shurtleff college and Chicago Business College. Married 15 Oct 1901 to Mariel Williams of Virden, IL. Leaves wife, one son, mother, two sisters and three brothers. First Baptist church. Pall bearers; E.B. Shafer, Roy Landon, Geo. Senior, J. A. Egelhoff, Reo M. Seago and E. B. Roach, former teacher and classmates of the deceased, Burial in Oak Grove.
COLEAN. Died 17-03-1904. Herbert Colean died at home in Jerseyville. Born in Jersey county 20 Mar. 1870, aged 33 years. In 1898 went to Florida, spent 3 years there; then to California 1901 and back to Jersey county in 1902.
COLEAN. Died 09-08-1880. Nelson Colean died at home of his sister, Mrs. Robert C. Darlington on Monday the 9th. Born 57 years ago last March 7th. Born and reared five miles west of Jerseyville on the old homestead now occupied by his brother, Edwin. Married Sarah Waddle Nov. 11, 1847. Funeral from Baptist church in Jerseyville. Rev. C. E. Taylot serving. Three children survive, Mrs Sarah E. Cook, Carrollton; James R. Colean, Teller of Bowman and ware’s Bank, and Miss Mary Colean of Jerseyvile. Five brothers are living; J. H. Colean, Isaac Colean, William Colean of Sangamon county and Edwin Colean of Jerseyville. One sister, Mrs. Harriet, wife of R. Darlington, of Jerseyville. His niece is Mrs. Joel Cory. Pall bearers; James W. Calhoun, Judge O.P. Powel, Smith M. Titus, Goe. C. Cockrell of Kane. John English, L. L. Kirby, Hon. Geo. E. Warren and Nathaniel Miner.
COLEAN. Died 12-05-1904. Mrs. Sarah Ann Colean, 68 yrs died at home in Peoria Monday. Body brought to Jerseyville to residence of Mrs. Nancy Colean, where services held by Rev. M.M. Cooper.
COLEMAN. Died 21-03-1963. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon for Mrs. Anna Baum Coleman, of 213 Goodrich Street, this city, whose death occurred at 5 o’clock Thursday evening at St. Luke’s Hospital in St. Louis where she had been a patient for six days . Rev. M. Edward Breed, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiated, and burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Coleman was born in Jersey County Sep. 4, 1903, a daughter of the late Frederick W. and Anna Miller Baum. Her age at the time of death was 59 years, 6 months, 10 days. Surviving the decedent are two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Durward and Mrs. Charles Updike of Jerseyville; four grandchildren; 1 brother, Ernest Baum of Jerseyville, and 4 sisters, Mrs. David Collins, Mrs. Louise Sinclair, Mrs. Leslie Gowin and Cyrena Cummings all of Jerseyville.
COLEMAN. Died 20-03-1953. Daniel Coleman, 85 year old farmer of Fidelity Township, died at his home at 2:45 am. March 20, following a period of ill health. The deceased was a son of the late Patrick and Jane Thompson Coleman and was born in Jersey county, Nov. 10, 1967. His age at the time of his death was 85 years, 4 months and 10 days. He made his home with his nieces, Misses Agnes and Marie Coleman, and his nephew Michael Coleman. Nieces and nephew are his only survivors. Funeral services were held at 9:30 Monday morning, 23 Mar. at St. Francis Xavier Church, Requiem Mass was celebrated by Father Eugene Griffin and interment was in St. Francis cemetery.
COLEMAN. Died 19-06-1898. Elizabeth, wife of Patrick Coleman, died of stroke at home seven miles east of Jerseyville, 19 Jun, 69 years of age. Funeral from St. Francis church then to the Catholic em. Leaves husband, 5 sons and 2 daughters.
COLEMAN. Died 25-12-1972. Funeral Mass for Eugene Coleman, 77, of 207 South Lafayette Street, Jerseyville, will be celebrated at 10:00 am. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Medora with Rev. John Sheahan celebrant. His death occurred at 2:30 pm on Christmas at Jersey Community Hospital. Interment will be at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. He was born Jul. 6, 1895 in Fidelity twsp the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Coleman. A WWI veteran, Mr. Coleman had engaged in farming. His survivors arehis wife, the former Verna Leasenfelt; a son, Francis of Medora; one daughter, Mrs. John (Thelma) Gray of Jerseyville; two brothers, Richard of Fidelity and Thomas of Jerseyville; and a sister Mrs. Elizabeth Downs of Brighton. Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where the Rosary was recited Wednesday evening.
COLEMAN. Died -02-1985. Henrietta “Hattie” L. Coleman, 92 of Alton died at Jersey comm hosp. Born in Jersey Co. daughter, of Meichior and Cinne (Theen) Wagenblast. Married James L. Coleman, he died Oct. 5, 1985. Leaves one brother, Lester M. Wagenblast of Alton, nieces and nephews. Rev. Edward Domme serving. Burial in Brighton cemetery.
COLEMAN. Died 21-12-1982. Services were conducted Friday afternoon at Gubser Funeral Home for Joseph I. Coleman, 81, who died at 3:50 am. Dec. 21 at his residence, 206 Sherman St. Jerseyville. The Rev. V Clay Noah officiated. He was born Dec. 8, 1901 in Racola, Mo., a son of the late James and Victoria Robart Coleman. The WWII Army veteran was retired from Olin Corp. His survivors are his wife, Anna Westfall Griffin Coleman; one son, Edward, of Elsah; a daughter, Bessie Randall of Panacea, FL; two step sons, Harold Griffin of Washington and Virgil of Portland, Ore.; three step daughters, Viola Godar, Otterville, Eunice Kessler, Portland Or., Geneva McClintock, Phoenix, Ariz; seven grandchildren and three g-grandchildren. His first wife, Laura Coleman, died Feb. 26, 1976. The American Cancer Society has been named as a memorial. Burial was in St. Patrick’s cemetery, Alton.
COLEMAN. Died 26-01-1976. Mrs. Laura R. Coleman, 76, of 1200 Marshall St., Alton, died at 5:55 am today at Eunice Smith Nursing Home after an illness of 5 years. A native of Fieldon, she married Joseph Coleman, July 25, 1943, in Alton. Besides her husband, surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Arleigh (Frances) Reed of Alton; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Bessie Randall of Summerville, MO; a stepson, Ed Coleman of Godfrey; 1 grandchild; 7 step grandchildren; three brothers, Jasper Westfall of Alton, Floyd Westfall of Medora and Ed Westfall of Pearl; a sister, Mrs. Anna Pitt of Jerseyville and a half sister, Mrs. Eva Haag of Rosewood Heights. Visitation begins after 4 pm. Friday at Gent Funeral Home, where a prayer service will be said at 7 pm. Friday. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 9 pm. Saturday at St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church, where she was a member. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s cemetery.
COLEMAN. Funeral services for Mrs. Marjorie June Colman of Route One, Jerseyville, were held at two-thirty o’clock Monday afternoon at the Warner Funeral Home in Brighton. The Reverend Hugh Wallace of Granite City, former pastor of the Piasa Methodist Church, officiated, assisted by Reverend Sister Blance Baker, present pastor. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. The death of Mrs. Colman occurred at two-ten o’clock Saturday morning at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Wainwright of Rural Route, Jerseyville. Mrs. Coleman had been in failing health since undergoing surgery about a year ago and for the past few months has been cared for in the home of her parents. A daughter of Harold and Harriet Voorhees Wainwright, Mrs. Coleman was born March 4, 1922, on the farm where he death occurred. She was married to Clarke Colman who survives, along with two daughters, Mrs. Roger Mourning of Jerseyville and Mrs. Joseph Cangelosi of Rural Route, Jerseyville, one grandchild and her parents. During her early childhood the Wainwright family resided in Kansas City where she was graduated from the Central High School. She was a talented musician and for a number of years was the organist at the Piasa Methodist Church where she was a member. For eight years prior to her illness. Mrs. Coleman held a secretary bookkeeping position with the Kentucky Fried Chicken Company, with operations in St. Louis and Alton.
COLEMAN. Died 14-02-1979. Mary Ann Coleman, 85, died at 12:30 pm Feb. 14 at her residence, 411 E. Exchange St. Jerseyville. She was born in Calhoun county, June 13 1893, a daughter of John W. and Annie Sheridan Plummer. Her survivors are her husband, Thomas H. Coleman whom she married March 4 1923; one son, Herbert Coleman of Jerseyville; two sisters, Nora Carpenter of Grafton and Bessie Plummer of Jerseyville. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister. Visitation is Friday from 3 to 9 pm at Jacoby Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 1:30 pm Feb 17 at Jacoby Funeral Home by the Rev. James Pepper. The Jersey Community Hospital has been named as the memorial. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery.
COLEMAN. Died 07-10-1919. Matthew F. Coleman, Co M., 18th Inf. died Oct. 7 from wounds in action, son of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Coleman east of Jerseyville. He left for training one week after his marriage to Miss Laura Griffiths. A cousin, James D. Coleman, died of wounds in Nov. 128th Inf.
COLEMAN. Died 13-05-1927. Michael H. Coleman, life long resident of Fidelity vicinity died seven miles east of Jerseyville, May 13, 56 years of age. Leaves widow, Mrs. Mary A. Coleman, two sons, Michael and Patrick Coleman of Jersey Co., and three daughters: Mrs. Arthur Watson of Jerseyville and Misses Marie and Agnes Coleman at home. Funeral from St. Fran church. Burial in St. Francis Cemetery.
COLEMAN. Died 09-02-1985. Funeral Mass was celebrated Monday morning at St. Francis Xavier Church for Michael H. “Mick” Coleman, 89, R. 2, Jerseyville with Father Patrick Morrow officiating. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery. His death occurred at 1:37 a.m. Feb. 9 at Alton Memorial Hospital. The farmer and World War I veteran was born May 11, 1895 in Fidelity Township in Jersey County to the late Michael H. and Mary Fitzgerald Coleman. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church and the Jerseyville American Legion. He is survived by three sisters, Agnes and Marie Coleman, both of Jerseyville, nieces and nephews. No memorial. Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home arrangements.
COLEMAN. Died 11-02-1985. A funeral mass was celebrated at 10 am today at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church for Michael “Mick” Coleman, 89, who died at 1:37am Saturday at Alton Memorial Hospital. He was a farmer and a WWI veteran, born in Jersey county, son of the late Michael H. and Mary Fitzgerald Coleman. Surviving are two sisters, Agnes and Marie Coleman, both of Jerseyville. The celebrant was Rev. Patrick Morrow and burial was in the church cemetery. Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville were in charge of the arrangements.
COLEMAN. Died -04-1916. Mrs. Hattie Pionter, Lester Cunningham, Richard Dougherty and John Nussman and Miss Galdry Nussman of Nokimis attended from a distance the funeral of John Coleman, a pioneer resident of Jersey county, who died at his home, nine miles east of Jerseyville Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock. Mr. Coleman was the oldest resident in Jersey County and probably held the record for age in the state as he was born in 1813, which made him 103 years old at his death. For the last 60 years he lived in Jersey County, having come here from his native home in Ireland. His wife died 17 years ago. Deceased leavesf our daughters, all of whom live at a distance, and two sons Patrick and James Coleman of Fidelity. Funeral services were held at St. Fran church Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock solemn requiem mass having been celebrated by Rev. J. J. Clancy, assisted by Rev. O’Brien of Medora and Rev. Francis Shields. Rev. O’Brien delivered the sermon, deceased having been a member of the Medora church.

COLEMAN. Died 24-06-1926. Patrick Coleman died at home 2 miles south of Fidelity. Aged 64 years. Born in Alton, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Coleman, who were natives of Ireland. His father, an early settler of Fidelity Township,died at the age of 103 years. Patrick never married. Made his home with his brother, James. Patrick leaves a brother and 4 sisters; Mrs. Marly Byrley of Nokimis; Mrs. Anna McLean of Leon, KS; Mrs. Catherine Schosso of Joncolla, OR and Mrs. James Gorry of St. Louis, MO.
COLEMAN. Died 21-11-1979. Services for Thomas H. Coleman, 94, of 411 E. Exchange St., Jerseyville were held Saturday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. James Pepper officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. He died at 7:45 a.m. Nov. 21 at Jersey Comm. Hospital. His wife, the former Mary Ann Plummer, died Feb. 14 this year. He was born in Jersey County Aug. 23, 1885, a son of John and Eliza O’Donnell Coleman and had farmed. He is survived by one son, Herbert Coleman of Jerseyville. His wife. parents, seven brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
COLEMAN. Died 05-04-1973. Funeral Mass for Verna Rose Coleman, 70, of 207 South Lafayette Street, Jerseyville, was celebrated Saturday morning at St. John’s Catholic Church in Medora with Rev. John Sheehan officiating. Her death occurred at 12:30 pm on April 5th at Jersey Community Hospital. Visitation was held Friday at Jacoby Funeral Home where the Rosary was recited at 8:15. Interment was in St. Francis Cemetery. She was born Feb 6, 1903 in Granite City, a daughter of Frank and Ethel Little Leasenfelt. Her husband, Eugene Coleman, died Dec. 25, 1972. She is survived by one son, Francis Coleman of Medora; a daughter, Mrs. John (Thelma) Gray of Jerseyville; six grandchildren; two g-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Dewey (Margaret) Whitlock of Bunker Hill and Mrs. Leonard (Harriet) Dugan, Granite City.
COLEMAN. Died 31-12-1973. Funeral services were held at 10 am on Jan. 3 for William Patrick Coleman 82, whose death occurred at his home, 212 Baxter Ave. on 31 Dec 1973. Father R. T. Shea officiated. A retired farmer, he was born in Jersey county on Aug. 16 1891, the son of William Patrick and Catherine Moore Coleman. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Barnett Coleman of Jerseyville; one daughter Mrs. Charles (Frances) Farmer of Jerseyville; one granddaughter; one sister, Mrs. Ellen Mulligan of Alton. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
COLLENBERGER. Died 00-02-1985. Frances A. Collenberger, 89, died at 7 pm, Thursday at Jersey Comm. Hospital. Born in Jersey County, daughter of the late Ellen Dower, she married Lloyd Collenberger who died May 12 1948.. Surviving are a daughter, Leona Heitzig of Jerseyville; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 pm today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. A rosary will be recited at 7 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated.
COLLENBERGER. Died 18-01-1973. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. James Connett at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville at 2 pm for George Collenberger of Paris, a former resident of this city. Before the body was brought to Jerseyville services were held Monday at Blume, Stewart, Carroll Funeral Home in Paris. Committal rites were at Oak Grove Cemetery here. Mr. Collenberger died Sunday at Shady Rest Manor in Paris following an extended period of impaired health. He was born in Jerseyville August 26 1901, but for the past thirty years made his home in Paris. Before retiring he was engaged in the insurance business. Surviving Mr. Collenberger are his wife, Mrs. Jessie McFain Collenberger of Paris; one son Robert of Urbana; one daughter Mrs. Jack (Mary Lou) Hormell of Jerseyville and Winter Haven Florida; one brother, Cecil Collenberger of Washington; eight grandchildren and two g-grandchildren.
COLLINS. Mrs. Clarinda Collins, 81, wife of Job Collins died at the home of her brother David Pierson, in Carrollton. Body brought home to Jerseyville on morning train. Funeral took place from train.
COLLINS. Died 00-10-1968. Requiem Mass was celebrated at 9:30 Wed., at St. Francis Xavier Church for David Michael Collins, retired Jersey County farmer. Father Francis Lee was celebrant of the Mass and burial was in St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers where the Rosary was recited Tuesday evening. The death of Mr. Collins occurred at 3:30 Sunday afternoon at the family home on Rte 2, Jerseyville. His health had been impaired for sometime and had been hospitalized prior to his death. Born in Jersey County, Jan, 21 1890, Mr. Collins was a son of the late Patrick and Ellen Shearin Collins. His age at death was 78 years, 9 months, 22 days. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Margaret Baum Collins; 4 daughters, Mrs. Eugene (Anna Helen) Kallal of Medora, Mrs. Herbert (Maurietta) Gibbons, Alton, Mrs. William (Wilma) Heitzig JR. Mrs. Wm.(Eileen) Gress Jr., of Fieldon; 3 sons, Edward, David and Emmett Collins, all of Jerseyville. 23 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren. 3 sisters and 4 brothers preceded him in death. Mr. Collins was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church of Jerseyville and of the Jerseyville Council of Knights of Columbus, No. 1692.
COLLINS. Died 11-07-1988. Edna “Snooks” Collins, 58, died July 11, 1988, at Barnes Hospitalin St. Louis. She was born on March 31, 1930 in St. Louis, Mo. to Garnet Tucker Jorgesen. She married Emmett “PeeWee” Collins. Survivors include her husband, Emmett “PeeWee” of Jerseyville; mother Garnet Jorgesen and Step father Roger Jorgesen of Jerseyvile; daughters Cindy Burch of Jerseyville, Patty VanWalleghen of Delhi and Cathie Rockwood of Florida; son James Ridenour of Delhi; brother Earl “Jr.” Watson of Jerseyville; five grandchildren. Funeral services were Jul 13 1988 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville with Rev. Wm. Hembrow officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. The Arthritis Foundation has been chosen as memorial.

Everett Chambers officiating. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park. Her death occurred at 3:15 p.m. on July 17at Jersey Community Hospital. She was born Sept. 30, 1893 in Jersey County, a daughter of Luther and Lillian Myers Johnson. Mrs. Collins was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jerseyville, Royal Neighbors of America, Worthey Unit 492 American Legion Auxiliary and 545 Local, Amalgamated Meat Cutter. Her survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Clark (Pauline) Seago of Alton; one son, Harvey Collins of Jerseyville; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Clifford Johnson of Rosedale; and four sisters, Mrs. Harold (Addie) Wadlow and Mrs. Blaine (Effie) Thompson of Alton, Mrs. Raymond (Elva )Phillips, Edwardsville and Mrs. John (Floy) Guntren of Jerseyville. Her husband, George Collins, died Dec. 18, 1950.
COLLINS. Died 14-10-1971. Mrs. Gretchen V. Collins of North Sumner Street, Route 2, Jerseyville, died at 6:10 pm. Sunday at the Jersey Community Hospital after an extended illness. Visitation hours were held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville after 4 pm. Tuesday. Funeral services were held at 2 pm. Wednesday at the State Street Baptist Church with Rev. L. E. Hutchinson officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Collins, a daughter of Mrs. Florence Mourning Waters of Jerseyville and the late Wellington O. Waters, was born in Jersey county. Her age at death was 53 years 6 months 8 days. Surviving Mrs. Collins are her husband, Edward; two sons, Thomas Collins of Jerseyville and Wm. Collins of Hardin; 2 daughters, Mrs. Mary Florence McBride of Jerseyville and Judy K. Collins who resides at home; her mother; one brother, Derald Waters of Jerseyville; one sister, Mrs. Mary Lemmons of De Peres, Mo., and 5 grandchildren.
COLLINS. Died 23-08-1984. James P. Collins, 24, of R. 2, Jerseyville was pronounce dead at the scene of a one-car accident 1.2 miles north on Route 16 on Rangeline Road, east of Jerseyville, at 12:35 a.m. Aug. 23, by Jersey County Coroner Paul Schroeder. The car apparently ran off the edge of the roadway, hit a culvert, rolled over and came to rest in a ditch, according to the coroner’s report. The accident which apparently occurred about 11:50 p.m. was reported by a passerby. Collins was a pipe fitter apprentice for Local 553. He was born 14 Dec. 1959 in Alton and was the son of David “Doc” Collins and the late Roberta Young Collins who died in January this year. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and the Third Degree Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his father; brothers, David, John, Mike, all of Jerseyville; sisters, Pam Heitzig of Jerseyville and Sue Raftis of Macomb. A brother Terry, also preceded him in death. A funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday morning at St. Francis Xavier Church with Rev. Patrick Morrow as celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery. The rosary was recited Friday evening at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. St. Francis Church has been designated as memorial. A coroner’s inquest is pending.
COLLINS. Died 21-01-1967. John P. Collins, retired Jersey County farmer who resided on Route Two, Jerseyville, died Saturday afternoon, January 21, at Blu Fountain Manor at Godfrey where he had been for one week. Visitation hours were at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where the Rosary was recited Monday evening. Funeral rites were held Tuesday morning at 9:30 o’clock at St. Francis Xavier Church with Requiem Mass celebrated by Rev. Father Francis Lee. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery. Mr. Collins was a son of the late Patrick and Ellen Shearin Collins and was born in Jersey County December 12, 1887. His age at the time of death was 79 years, 1 month, and 9 days. Surviving Mr. Collins are his wife, Mrs. Lucy Geneva Maguire Collins of Jerseyville to whom he was married on February 14, 1912 at St. Francis Church of Jerseyville, a niece, Doris Maguire of East Alton, whom the couple reared, and other nieces and nephews.

COLLINS. Died 05-01-1975. Final rites were held for Lester Edward Collins, 78, a resident of RR 1 Jerseyville for 25 years, were held on 8 Jan from Hires Funeral Home, Carrollton. Interment was in Oak Wood Cemetery Greenfield. His death occurred Jan 5 at Jersey Community Hospital. He had farmed in Greenfield and retired in 1961 from Duncan Foundry in Alton. He moved to Jerseyville in 1950. A member of the Bethel Methodist Church, he was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge AF and AM in Carrollton, Grand Royal Arch 186, and Order of Eastern Star. His wife the former Thelma Maze survives, and also a sister Maude Collins of Carrollton.

A funeral Mass for Roberta E. “Bettie” Collins, 61, of rural Jerseyville was celebrated Tuesday morning at St. Francis Xavier Church with Father Patrick Morrow and Father William Hembrow as concelebrants. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery. She died unexpectedly at 10:47 p.m. Jan 14 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Alton after being stricken ill earlier on her way to Alton with friends. She was born Sep 10 1922 in Jersey County, daughter of the late Frederick and Adelia Scaaf Young. Mrs. Collins was a member of St. Francis Church and Altar Society and the Jerseyville Women of the Moose. Her survivors are her husband, David L. Collins Jr. whom she married July 26 1943; four sons, David, John, Mike and Jim all of Jerseyville; two daughters, Pam Heitzig of Jerseyville and Sue Raftis of Macomb; four brothers, Tony Young, Alton, Fred Young, Mascoutah, Carl and Bob of Jerseyville; four sisters, Leona Bell, Jerseyville, Marguerite Lewis, Madison, Hazel Woolsey, Kane and Lucille Wadeof Jerseyville. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Monday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held at St. Francis Xavier Church Monday morning Aug. 11, at 9:30. Requiem Mass was celebrated by Father John J. Clancey and interment was in St. Francis Cemetery
COMBES. Died -01-1926. Anna Mershon Combes, formerly of Plainview, died at home of her daughter,Mrs. M. E. Burwash, in Kentland, Ind. Born Marc. 24, 1855 in Plainfield, N. J. 70 years of age. Her parents, Louis and Agnes Smalley Kirpatrick, moved to Jersey County during her childhood and here she grew to womanhood. Feb. 24, 1886 she married Horace C. Mershon. One daughter, Ada, now Mrs. M. E. Kirkpatrick, and two brothers, James and Robert Kirkpatrick. Preceded by parents, one brother, George, and two sisters, Mrs. H. H. Snell and Mrs. Sarah Kirkpatrick. In October 1896 she became the wife of Daniel H. Combes of Plainview, this union broken by death seven years ago. Funeral at Kirkpatrick home. In absence of Baptist ministers the service conducted by Rev. O. B. Kinsey of ME church. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery.
COMBES. Died 26-02-1917. Edward Seymour Combes born in Trenton, NJ Nov. 4, 1839. Parents came to Jersey County, Illinois in 1845. At age of 26 he came to Plainview, where he engaged in farming. On Sept. 1st, 1867 he married Julia A. Snyder. Five children: Mrs. Mary Lambert, Ansley, Neb.; Mrs. Kathryn Clark, Carlinville, Ill., Mrs. Grace Taylor, Plainview, Llyoyd W. Combes, Plainview, Mrs. Carrie Wilson, Jersey. Leaves wife, children, 17 grandchildren, brother Daniel. He had united with the Baptist church in Jerseyville but when the Presbyterian church organized died in Plainview, he became one of the members. When other members of the family joined Methodist Episcopal, he did too. Died Feb. 26, 1917.
Daniel H. COMBS (COOMBS?) departed this life at ten o’clock Monday morning, July 27, 1885. He was born October 23, 1805, at Trenton, N.J., and in that state, March 15, 1837, was united in marriage to Miss Mary R. SUNDERLAND. He removed with his family to Jerseyville in the year 1845 where he has ever since resided. There were born unto them, three children, Edward S., Daniel H., and Caroline A., now the wife of A. P. RICHARDS, who were all present at his bed side at the time his spirit left them. He was a man retiring and unassuming in manner, of decided christian character. A resident amongst us for more than forty years, he gained an acquaintance of so favorable a nature that it tells of his life better than can be written. An old land mark has gone, who will be missed by all who knew him. “Requiescat in pace.” From Jersey County Democrat, July 30, 1885.
Died, at the residence of her son, Daniel, in Plainview, Ill., Friday, July 29, 1887, Mrs. Mary R. COMBES, relict of Daniel H. Combes. Mary Rymer SUNDERLAND was born in Trenton, N.J., Oct. 20, 1808. She made a profession of religion at the age of 16 and joined the Baptist church of Trenton, N.J> On the 15th, of March, 1836, she was united in marriage to Daniel H. Combes. In 1845, they removed to this state and settled near Jerseyville. Her husband passed to the better world July 27, 1885, just two years ago. Mrs. Combes passed quietly and painlessly away on the morning of July 29, ’87. “Grandma” Combes, as she was familiarly called by those who were aquainted with her, possessed a character of true womanly grace and of real worth in every respect. In every relation of life she was a true, christain woman. As a daughter in ther father’s house she was loving and obedient, a true and faithful wife to her husband during all the years which they spent together. As a mother, her children bear testimony to her faithful devotion in this respect, and not only her own children but several others whom she fathered to her motherly heart, and loved and cared for as her own, rise up to call her blessed. Her christian obligations, both private and public, were always faithfully met.
Upon arriving at Jerseyville, one of her first acts was to connect herself with the Baptist church of which she remained a consistent member for 41 years, making her entire church connection cover a period of 63 years. As a member of the church, was true to all her duties and active in all good work, her associates in Jerseyville will remember her earnest work in the Woman’s Aid Society during the war. A true patriot, she was deeply interested in the soldiers and in the cause for which they were striving, and she united her earnest efforts with others for their relief. She had a heart of sympathy for the poor and was always ready to help them. Even the much-abused tramp always received something from her hand. There is so much to admire in a long, faithful, christian life, that has battled with temptation, that has borne the trials and suffered the sorrows of life, that has struggled to overcome the weakness that beset us all, and thro’ it all has been loving fathful and true in every relation, and then has come down, where the evening shadows fall gently around, covered all over with the glory of our Savior’s righteousness! Such a life was hers who passed from us to the rest that remaineth for the people of God. Grandma Combes had almost reached the ripe old age of 80 years, and for one of that age she was active and strong, she frequently walked a mile, and often further. She was an obedient daughter, a true wife, a faithful friend, a real christian, and we let the mantle of loving christian charity cover a life that for long years walked amid the informities of old age. Her life on earth has ended. Her life in her Father’s House above has just begun. The reunion of loved ones who have gone before, the joy of her Savior’s presence, the delight of walking along the river of life and upon the streets of shining gold, and of resting in the mansions of a Savior’s love, and beholding the light of that City where they need not the light of the sun nor of the moon, for the Lamb is the light therof, this is her portion now. When the call shall come to us to leave this world, may we go to stand with her among the white robed throng of those who have washed their robes and made them in the blood of the lamb. She left three children, Edward and Daniel of Plainview, and Caroline, wife of A. P. Richards of this city. Lloyd Sunderland a brother, Mrs. Caroline Snedeker, widow of Isaac Snedeker, deceased, and Mrs. Adelia Mershon, widow of Theodore Mershon, deceased, of this city, were her sisters. – P. COMBES. Died 29-06-1887. Died at home of son, Daniel, in Plainview, Ill., Friday July 29, 1887, Mrs. Mary R. Combes, relict of Daniel H. Combes. Mary Rymer Sunderland was born in Trenton, NJ, Oct. 20, 1808. She joined the Baptist church at Trenton. On March 15, 1836 she married Daniel H. Combes. In 1845 they came to Jerseyville. He died July 27, 1886. Leaves three children: Edward and Daniel of Plainview and Caroline, wife of A. P. Richards of Jerseyville. Lloyd Sunderland is a brother, Mrs. Adelia Mershon, widow of Theodore Mershom and Mrs. Caroline Snedeker, widow of Isaac Snedeker were her sisters.
COMBES. Died 27-06-1885. Daniel H. Combs died July 27, 1885. Born Oct. 23, 1805 at Trenton, NJ and in that state married March 15, 1837 to Mary R. Sunderland. Came to Jerseyville with family in 1845. Three children – Carolina A. wife of A. P. Richards, Retiring and unassuming in manner, of Christian character. An old landmark has gone -“Requiescat in pace.”
COMBS. Died 28-03-1879. Pearl Combs, third son of Wesley and Mary S. Combs, born in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio March 14, 1854, died at home of brother in Old Kane March 28, 1879 25 years. When 9 years old, his parents moved to Jefferson Co. Ind. near Madison. Lived there 3 years when he came to Jerseyville. He started teaching and remained at this until his health failed in 1878. Worked for part of the years in 1878. Visited his parents in southwest Missouri. From there to his older brothers in Johnson Co., Ill. Died at Old Kane. Baptist Church.
COMPTON. Died 09-04-1976. The funeral of Francis Lewis Compton, 81, was conducted on April 11 from Jacoby Funeral Home, Grafton, with the Rev. Bob Kimber officiating. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery. He died at 1:30 p.m. on April 9 at his home, 205 N. Cedar, Grafton. A World War I veteran, Compton was formerly employed in the steel industry. He was born March 23, 1895 in Wanconda, Mo., a son of John and Maude Irene Lewis Compton. His survivors are his widow, the former Edna Besaw; sons, Vincent Compton, Bunker Hill, Alvie of Alton, Francis J., Dale, Danen, Grafton, Robert, East Alton, and Donald of Peoria; daughters Mrs. James Lovsey, Edwardsville, Mrs. Lewis Bassett of Natinal City, Calif. and Mrs. Gerald Main, East Alton; 42 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren.

COMPTON. Died -07-1898. Mrs. Compton died at her home near Delhi, Wed. Funeral held on Thursday. It will be remembered that her husband met death by an accident some years ago, and at the time was a member of the county board of supervisors.

His death occurred Feb. 10 at Alton Memorial Hospital. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery. A retired guard at Olin Mathieson Corporation, Alton, he was born October 28, 1918 in Grafton the son of Francis and Edna Besaw Compton. Mr. Compton served under General Douglas MacArthur in WW II and was a member of the American Legion No. 794 in East Alton and Chapter 3 D. A. V. life member. His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Mildred Cox Compton; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Compton of Grafton; seven brothers, Vincent of Bunker Hill, Alvy of Godfrey, Jerry, Danden and Dale, Grafton, Robert of Alton and Donald of Peoria; three sisters, Mrs. Claudine Loosey of Glen Carbon, Mrs. Jean Bassett, National City, California, and Mrs. Nancy Main, East Alton. member of the American Legion and V. CONE. Died 13-12-1974. Final services for Catherine K. Cone, 80, of Kane were held Sunday afternoon, Dec. 15, from Jacoby Funeral Home with the Rev. L. E. Hutchinson officiating. Mrs. Cone was pronounced dead on arrival at 3:40 p.m. on Dec. 13 at Boyd Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. She was born March 27, 1894 in Dublin, Ireland. Her husband, Jesse M. Cone , died in 1956. Her survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Mary M. Estes and Mrs. Virginia Goodall of Kane; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. Her parents, husband, six brothers and a granddaughter preceded her in death.
CONE. Mrs. Edith Mae Cone, 78, died at 10:47 p.m., Tuesday at Garnet’s Chateau. Mrs. Cone, a daughter of the late John W. and Mary T. Bright Allen was born in Jersey County, March 14, 1894, was the widow of George W. Cone, and formerly resided on Rural Route 1, Grafton. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Clyde (Bettylou) Cope, Grafton; two grandchildren, Bradley and Vivian Cope; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Allen, Mrs. Viola Hanlin and Mrs. Susuie Wallace, all of Jerseyville, and Mrs. Alice Miller of California; two brothers, Jesse Allen and Lawrence Allen, both of Jerseyville. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, William Alllen, and her husband. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday from Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home, with Rev. Vale Walkington of Otterville, officiating, and interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the Funeral Home after 4 p.m., Thursday.

CONKLIN. Died 03-04-1971. Final services for Etta Marie Conklin, 94, of this city were held Tuesday morning at 10:00 o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. M. Edwards Breed, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Her death occurred April 3rd at Jersey Community Hospital. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery. She was born February 19, 1877 in Jersey County the daughter of Amos Lurton and Sarah Vincent Conklin. Miss Conklin was a retired clerk at Frank Elelectric Company in St. Louis., She was a member of the Presbyterian Church where she was instrumental in starting the Esther Bible Class. She is survived by one brother, Thoedore L. Conklin of Jerseyville. Her parents and three sisters preceded her in death.

CONKLIN. Died 1927. Miss Laura B. Conklin, aged 74 years, 4 months and 11 days, died at her home on South Lafayette street on Monday afternoon at one oclock following a long illness. The deceased was born in Riley, Ohio, the daughter of Joseph M. and Charolette Conklin. She came to Jersey County with her parents in 1864, and the greater part of her life had been spent here. She is survived by seven nieces, Misses Etta and Cora Conklin of this city, Mrs. O. K. Clay of Price, Utah, Mrs. Ben Conway, Mrs. Laura Roderick and Miss Florence Beaty of Knobnoster, Mo., and Mrs. Edith Wagner of Richmond, Kans., and two nephews, Theodore L. Conklin of this city and Harry J. Conklin of St. Louis and one sister, Mrs. Lydie Beaty of Knobnoster, Mo., preceded her in death. Funeral services held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 oclock from the home with Rev. H. S. Farrill officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery.
CONLON. Died 05-05-1975. A funeral Mass was celebrated on May 9 at St. Francis Xavier Church for Agnes Conlon, 62, who died at 11:30 p.m. on May 5 at Garnet’s Chateau. Interment was in St. Francis Cemetery. Father R. T. Shea officiated. She was born April 22, 1913. There are no survivors.

CONNOLLY. Died 02-11-1974. Funeral Mass for Cletus Connolly, 76, of Salem was celebrated Tuesday, Nov. 5th at the Little Flower Catholic Church in Salem. He died on Nov. 2 at the Salem Hospital. He was born Jan. 17, 1898 in Jerseyville, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Connolly. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Jacqueline Connolly; one daughter, Mrs. Walter (Ettazine) Boehme; three grandchildren; a brother E. P. Connolly of Des Moines, Iowa, and two sisters, Miss Irene Connolly of Jerseyville and Mrs. Glenn Skaggs of Carrollton.
CONNOLLY. Died 01-12-1985. Former Jersey County resident Edmund P. Connolly, 83, of West Des Moines, Iowa, died Dec. 1 in West Des Moines. He was born June 25, 1902, in St. Louis to the late Peter W. Connolly and Hannah Langdon. The family moved to Jersey County, where he spent his early years. In 1940, he moved to Des Moines and worked as a general agent for Penn Mutual Life Insurance Co. He held that position until he retired in 1962. He was a past president of the Des Moines General Agents and Managers Club and the Iowa Association of Life Underwriters, National Association of Life Underwriters, Izaak Walton League, Embassy Club, Des Moines and Wakonda Country Club. Survivors include sister Vera Skaggs of Carrollton; six nephews and a niece. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. Visitation was Dec. 6 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. The funeral Mass was Dec. 7 at St. Francis Xavier Church with the Revs. Hembrow, Morrow, Heinen and O’Reilley as concelebrants. Burial was in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. CONNOLLY. Died 09-04-1976. Funeral Mass was celebrated for Miss Irene Agnes Connolly, 70, of 205 W. Exchange Street, Jerseyville Monday morning at Holy Ghost Church with the Rev. Robert L. Heintz celebrant. Interment was in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. Her death occurred at 3:45 p.m. on April 9 at Jerseyville Care Center where she had resided for a few months following an accident. She was born April 22, 1905 in Murrayville, a daughter of Peter and Hannah Langdon Conolly. Miss Connolly was a registered nurse and obstetrical supervisor at Jerseyville Community Hospital form August, 1954, until she retired in 1971. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Glenn (Vera) Slaggs of Carrollton and a brother, Edmund Connolly of Des Moines, Iowa; six nephews and a niece. Her parents and two brothers preceded her in death. The Rosary was recited Sunday evening at Jacoby Funeral Home. Miss Connolly was a member of the Jerseyville Business and professional Women’s Club, Jersey Home Extension, Senior Citizens Club, Jersey Community Hospital Auxiliary, and Holy Ghost Altar Society.
CONNOLLY. Died 27-03-1975. The funeral of Mrs. Cletus (Jacqueline) Connolly of Salem was held Monday afternoon at the First Baptist Church in Salem. Her death occured at 7 p.m. on March 27. Her husband Cletus Connolly, died in November, 1974. Relatives from this area who attended the services were her sister-in-law, Miss Irene Connolly and Mrs. Ellen Shcmieder of Jerseyville, and Mrs. Glenn Skaggs of Carrollton, her husband, Mrs. and Mrs. Paul Connolly, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Connolly, and Mrs. Michael Orban of Godfrey.
CONNORS. Died 20-07-1951. Funeral services for Miss Annie Connors were held at St. Franics Xavier Church Monday morning, July 23 at nine-thirty oclock with Reverend Father John J. Clancy officiating. Interment was in St. Francis Cemetery. The death of Miss Connors occurred Friday evening, July 20, at 8:15 oclock at the Mather Home in Alton following an extended illness. Miss Connors was born in Jersey County on March 3, 1884, and had spent her entire lifetime here. She was a daughter of the late Michael and Julia Grimes Connors, natives of Ireland. She is survived by one brother, Edward Connors of Jerseyville, three sisters, Mrs. Kate Dwyer of Jerseyville, Mrs. Nellie O’Toole of Alton and Mrs. Julia Maher of Denver, Colorado.

COOK. Died 14-05-1983. Edna Mary Cook, 69, died unexpectedly at 5:20 p.m. May 14 at her residence, 208 Fletcher, Jerseyville. She was born Jan. 16, 1914 in Jersey County, daughter of the late John and Edna Edwards Bray. She had been bookkeeper at B. J. Schroeder Appliances and TV for 15 years. She is survived by one son, Terry Cook, and a daughter, Judy Bryant, of Jerseyville; five grandchildren; three brothers, John, Bob and Jim Bray, Jerseyville; six sisters, Helen Seago, Margie McIntyre, Doris Shaw, Jeanne Miller, Jerseyville. Lois Bray, Springfield, Kathryn Bleicher, San Diego, Calif. Her husband, Charles Cook whom she married May 14, 1939 in Jerseyville died on April 1, 1957. A funeral mass was celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church with Father Patrick Morrow as celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery. Memorial of one’s choice. The rosary was recited at Jacoby Funeral Home.
COOK. Died 17-06-1976. The funeral of Mrs. Elsie Mae Cook, 75, of Rt. 1, Brighton was conducted June 20 at Jacoby-Wise Funeral Home in Bunker Hill. Burial was in Woodburn Cemetery. Her death occurred at 8:45 a.m. on June 17 at her home. Surviving are her husband Thomas L. Cook; a daughter, Mrs. Billie (Lillie) Walz of Brighton; four sons, Leon Myrl, Bunker Hill, Glenn L., Alton, Robert, Dorsey, and Eldon A. of Brighton; nine grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Hasselbring, Mrs. Lille Meers, Mrs. Fern Garland and Mrs. Gladys Gaysvicky and two brothers, George Eppler and Virgil Eppler, all of Nebraska. The family designated Alton Seventh Day Adventist Church building fund as a memorial.
COOK. Died 12-04-1991. Former Jerseyville resident Marie Inman Cook, 80, died at 9 a.m. Friday, April 12, 1991, at home. In 1946, she and her three brothers purchased the Inman Department store in Jerseyville from their father. She later bought out her brother’s interest in the business and operated it until retiring in 1963. She also operated a childrens’ clothing shop in Jerseyville from 1952-1962. Born in Calhoun County, on June 13, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Allen C. and Cuba M. (Coughlin) Inman. She was married to the late U. Grant Prater. On Nov. 14, 1954, she married Rex M. McCann, and he later died on May 19, 1959. She later married George W. Cook on Oct. 4, 1965 and he died May 19, 1978. Surviving are two sons, G. Barney Cook of Toledo and Dr. Neal B. Prater of Clinton, S.C.; three grandchildren; and two brothers, Jack G. Inman of Carrollton and James C. Inman of Palm Springs, Calif. A brother, Dale Inman, preceded her in death. Visitation is from 1 p.m. Monday until service time at 2 p.m. at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Rev. Simon A. Simon will officiate. Burial is in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Jerseyville, where she was a member, or to a charity of ones choice.
COOK. Died 01-01-1958. Wilbur V. Cook of 419 South Pearl Street, Jerseyville, died of pneumonia at eleven Forty-five oclock New Year’s night as plans were being made to move him by ambulance to the hospital. Mr. Cook ,a specialist in mechanical work and service manager at the Wade Implement Company in Jerseyville, has been confined to his home the past five weeks as the result of an injury to his left leg sustained at home. A cast had been applied after examination disclosed that in addition to a twisted injury to the knee there was a fracture to the tibia bone. He was making satisfactory progress when he became ill on Christmas, but his condition did not become critical until shortly before his death. Mr. Cook had been employed by the implement company for ten years, working for A. H. Schlotzhauer before the latter disposed of the business to the present owner, James Wade. The decedent was born in Decatur, November 24, 1908, a son of George Cook of Decatur. and Mrs. Irene Cook Ehrisman of Decatur. His age at the time of death was forty-nine years, one month and seven days. Mr. Cook is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ada Mattis Cook, fourth grade teacher in the Kane Elementary School, his mother and father, one half sister, Mrs. Helen Wendell of Decatur, and one half-brother, Lyle Cox of White Hall. Funeral services were held at Gubser Funeral Home Saturday January 4, at two o’clock. Reverend Carl Moman, pastor of the Baptist Church, officiated and burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery.

COOKE. Died 20-06-1946. Mrs. Leona Grace Cooke, wife of Firm Cooke, died at her home on East Carpenter Street in Jerseyville, Saturday morning, July 20 at 4 o’clock. She had been ill the past few weeks. Mrs. Cooke was the daughter of the late William and Sarah Alice Shyte Rintoul and was born in Jersey County, Nov. 18, 1884. Surviving Mrs. Cooke in addition to her husband are four sons, Paul Cooke of Jerseyville, Ralph Cooke of Alton, Norman Cooke, EM 1/c of Sheldon, Washington, and Hayden Cook, Seaman 1/c of Shoemaker, Calif., and five daughters, Mrs. Helen Graves of Godfrey, Miss Eula Cooke of Jerseyville, Mrs. Dorothy Obermiller of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Elizabeth Barenreuther and Miss Marjorie Cooke of Alton. She also leaves 6 grandchildren, three brothers, Oscar Rintoul of Godfrey, Earl Rintoul of St. Louis and Victor Rintoul of Godfrey and two sisters, Mrs. Reba Rothwell of St. Louis and Mrs. Nellie Houghton of Concordia, Kansas. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon July 23, at 2 at Peace Evangelical Church in Jerseyville. Rev. Louis V. Huber officiated and interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery.
COOKE. Died 09-12-1982. Services were conducted Dec. 13 at Moles Funeral Home in Ferndale, Wash. for Norman E. Cooke, 63, of Bellingham, a former Jersey County resident, who died at 4:45 a.m. Dec. 9 at his residence. Born in Jersey County, he was a son of the late Firman and Leone Rintoul Cooke and was a World War II U.S. Navy Veteran. His survivors are his wife, the former Mayme Lyle; two sons, Cecil and Richard, both of Bellingham, Wash.; two grandchildren; five sisters and two brothers, including Ralph Cooke of Dow.
COOMBES. Buried 13-03-1955. Mrs. Alta V. Coombes of Route Two, Jerseyville was killed in an automobile accident at nine-twelve o’clock Monday morning on United States highway 67 about a mile north of State highway 140 in north St. Louis County. Her husband James Pearl Coombes, is in critical condition at St. Louis County Hospital where he was moved immediately following the accident. He has serious chest, head and knee injuries. Mr. and Mrs. Coombes were on their way to St. Louis to consult a physician when the accident occurred. Deputy Sheriffs who investigated the crash reported that Clyde E. Wright of 4441 Oakland Avenue in St. Louis said that he was northbound on Highway 67 when a southbound tractor trailer forced him onto the shoulder of the road. His car collided with the southbound Coombes machine as he swerved back onto the road. In the line of traffic held up temporarily because of the crash were several Jerseyville residents but they were not aware of the identity of the accident victims. James Coombes of Jerseyville, son of the couple, received a telephone message about ten forty-five o’clock telling him that his parents had been seriously hurt. He learned of the death of his mother after his arrival at the St. Louis County Hospital. Mrs. Coombes was born in Jersey County, February 14, 1889, and her age at the time of death was sixty-six years, two months and twenty-six days. She was a daughter of the late William and Rose Davis Lawler. In addition to her husband the decedent is survived by two sons, James Coombes of Jerseyville and William Coombes of the United States Army who is stationed at Camp Gordon, Georgia; one daughter, Mrs. Herbert Darr of St. Louis; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond Lawler of St. louis and Leslie Clifton of Alton, and one sister, Mrs. James Wedding of Fieldon Friends may call at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held there Friday afternoon, May 13, at two-oclock, daylight savings time. Reverend Leonard Todd of Alton, former pastor of Christ Evangelical and Reformed Church in Fieldon, will officiate and interment will be in the Fieldon Cemetery.
COOMBES. Died 29-07-1968. Mrs. Nola B. Coombes, 89 year old resident of Fieldon, died Monday , July 29, at 12:06 p.m. at Garnet’s Chateau in Jerseyville where she had resided for seventeen days. Final rites were conducted Wednesday afternoon at three o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home by Rev. H. O. Renken, pastor of the Unite Church of Christ in Fieldon. Burial was in the Fieldon Cemetery. Visitation hours were held at the Funeral Home. Mrs. Coombes was a daughter of the late Alec and Ellen Shaw and was born in Jersey County on November 8, 1878. Her age of death was 89 years, 8 months and 21 days. Surviving Mrs. Coombes are one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Duval of Fieldon and two grandsons David Duval of Lakeside, Conn., and Donald Duval of Fieldon. She was the widow of Everett Coombes.

Funeral services for James (Pearl) Coombes, 83, formerly of Jerseyville, whose death occurred Friday at El Paso, Texas, were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Leonard Todd of Noro officiated at the rites and burial was in the Fieldon Cemetery. A retired farmer, he was born February 20,1887 at Fieldon, a son of James and Amanda Cope Coombes. He is survived by two sons, James L. Coombes of Jerseyville and William D. Coombes of El Paso; one daughter, Mrs. Rose Darr of Phoenix, Ariz., nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His wife, Alta Lawler Coombes, parents, two brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. Visitation hours were held after 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
COOP. Died 12-02-1946. Garrett Henry Coop, 79, year old resident of Jerseyville was instantly killed Tuesday, February 12 at 8:45 a.m. when he was struck by a train on the C & A tracks at the East Pearl Street crossing. Members of Mr. Coop’s family reported that the aged man was enroute to a neighborhood grocery store to secure some food when the accident occurred. Mr. Coop was the son of the late Allen J. and Sarah Heintz Coop and was born in Montgomery County, Mo. July 1, 1866. The decedent is survived by one son, Harry G. Coop of Jerseyville, one grandsons, Harry A. Coop, Jr. of Jerseyville, one great-grandson Gordon A. Coop, one great-granddaughter Carolyn Lea Coop of Jerseyville. Funeral services will be held at Jacoby Brothers Chapel Friday, February 15 at 2 p.m. Rev. William J. Boston of Jacksonville will officiate and interment will be in Gunterman Cemetery.

COOPER. Died 10-06-1974. Funeral services for Bertha Cooper, 91, of Fieldon will be held this afternoon, June 13, at 1:30 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Leonard Todd officiating. her death occurred at 8:55 p.m. on June 10 at Greenwood Manor. Interment will be in the Gunterman Cemetery. COOPER. Buried 27-10-1895. Death of Johnathan Cooper removes from Jersey County one of her pioneer citizens. Born in Henry Co., Kentucky on Jan. 5, 1807. He was 89 yrs old. When 23 he came to Illinois riding horseback taking 13 days for the trip. First winter spent as a clerk in store of his uncle, L. N. English, at Carrollton, later working on a farm. Enlisted in Gov. Carlin’s Company for Black Hawk War. Served one year. Later in Capt. Patterson’s Co. and was in battles of Wisconsin and Mississippi. In 1832 he entered the land on which he resided until his death- 2 1/2 miles south of Jerseyville. His wealth consisted of a horse and three dollars in money. Being a pioneer, Many hardships had to be endured. Married May 19, 1836 to Mariam F. Turner, native of New Hampshire. She died in 1873. Reared two adopted children – Marshall M. Cooper.
Prairie Pioneer Jonathon Cooper
Capt. Jonathan E. Cooper, one of the pioneer settlers of Jersey County, died at his home two and a half miles southwest of Jerseyville Friday October 25, 1895, aged 88 years. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church Sunday afternoon. Dr. Bulkly of Alton preaching to a large assembly, Interment in Oak Grove Cemetery. The pall bearers were L. L. Kirby, D. R. Stelle, Robert Newton, Andrew Cope, Lewis Terrell and A. F. Pitt.
Capt. Cooper was born in Henry County, Kentucky, Jan. 5, 1807. His father, Jonathon Cooper, was a native of Maryland and one of the early settlers of the beautiful “blue grass country,” a pioneer with Daniel Boone with whom he fought the Indians. He was also a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He married his first wife, Eleanor Jones, in Pennsylvania and reared six children. Succeeding the death of his wife, he married Eleanor English in Shelby County, Kentucky, and to them twelve children were born. Jonathan E. Cooper being the eldest sone and second child. In 1835 he removed to Illinois and settled on a farm four miles southwest of Jerseyville where he died in August 1845. Mrs. Cooper survived his death eleven years.
Jonathan E. Cooper had little advantage for school training, the only means within his reach being the public schools of his native state which were of an inferior order, but he had a hungry mind and sought the best books and papers of his day, thus acquiring historical and practical knowledge. He leaves in his library some rare and valuable books and papers. He labored on the farm until he was 23 years of age, and in Nov. 1829, he came from Kentucky to what is now Jersey County, making the trip on horseback in 13 days. A Kentucky horse and three dollars in cash were his sole capital. He spent nearly the first winter clerking in the store of his uncle, L. N. English, of Carrollton. The next year he worked on a farm. On the breaking out of the Black Hawk war, he enlisted in Capt. Carlins company, was elected as its orderly sergeant and served one year under Carlin. The next year, 1832, he served in Capt. Pattersons company and a portion of the year he was quartermaster. He fought in the battles of the Wisconsin and Mississippi, and after peace was declared, received an honorable discharge.
In October, 1832, Capt. Cooper entered the land on which he lived to his death, two and half miles southwest of Jerseyville. During this same year, he was commissioned captain of militia by Gov. Reynolds; hence his official title, Captain, which he bore with honor. After entering his land, he at once began its improvement and built a cabin home. In that early day he had many hardships to endure and difficulties to overcome. But thus are men made strong.
One spring day, May 19, 1836, the captain led to the marriage alter, Miriam F. Turner, nee French, the daughter of Nicholas and Anna French and a native of Rockingham County, New Hampshire. On the first day of the following August, he took his bride to their cabin home which was located on the identical spot where stands the house in which he died, where he lived for 59 years. After 37 years of successful life, his devoted helpmate was taken from him by death. No children blessed their union, but their generous souls led them to adopt two: Marshal M. Cooper, who became a Presbyterian minister and is now located at Troy, Ill.; and Mary, the wife of N. I. Massey, who reside in Colorado. On Dec. 3, 1879, Captain Cooper married Mrs. Sarah C. Johnson, nee Gillham, a native of Madison County, Illinois, who has lived to see the sterling old man fall into the dreamless sleep that knows no disturbance. She has been a true and faithful wife, devoted to the last.
Capt. Cooper was a good citizen. He rendered to Caeser that which beloned to Caeser, and to God that which belonged to God. Politically he was a democrat. He cast his first vote for General Jackson and never forsook the party of his first choice. He never aspired to public office. In 1839, he and his wife united with the Baptist church at Kane, there being no church of that denomination in Jerseyville at that time, and afterwards were among the original members of the Jerseyville Baptist church. Mr. Cooper was elected the first deacon of the church and held the office to the time of his death. He kept his mind well-informed, reading the best books and papers published. He subscribed for one religious paper for 52 yearsthe Western Recorder, a Baptist paper published at Louisville, Ky. He had a strong personality and his influence and iron will told in all his relations in life. He was noble-hearted and generous, charitable to the poor but making no display of his gifts. He surrendered to but one enemy and that was Death. He fought him as scarcely any other mortal has done but at last he laid down his armor and the struggle ended. Final services for Robert Cooper, 91, of 500 West Exchange Street, Jerseyville were held Tuesday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where visitation hours were held Monday evening. His death occurred at 2:15 a.m. on December 17 at Garnet’s Chateau. Rev. William Smith officiated at the rites and interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery. A retired farmer, he was born June 19, 1881 in Greene County the son of John and Rose Weeks Cooper. Mr. Cooper was a member of the Peace United Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Virgie Miller Cooper; one daughter, Mrs. Ray (Edna) Ridenour of Jerseyville; two sons, Otis L. Cooper of Jerseyville and Robert D. She was born Feb. 10, 1893 in Jersey County, a daughter of Edward Z. and Nora Reddish Miller. Her husband, Robert Cooper, died in 1972. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ray (Edna) Ridenour of Jerseyville; two sons, Otis Cooper of Jerseyville and Robert Cooper of Georgetown, Calif.; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. The Peace United Church of Christ Building Fund had been designated as a memorial.

COOPER. Died -03-1917. John E. Cooper, Sr. was born in Hanover, Germany Dec. 7 1828 and died at his home 7 miles northwest of Fieldon on May, 1917, 88 years. Married Serena Oltman of Germany, Jan. 4, 1851. Six children, one daughter preceded him. Leaves: four sons, Albert of Beattie, Kans, John, George and Albert Cooper of near Fieldon; one daughter: Mrs. Walter Dunham of Fieldon, 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren. Mr. Cooper, after the death of his wife, July 13, 1866, decided to come to this county with his family. He started in 1867 and came as far as Chester, where they were compelled to stay on account of severe ice. One daughter died Jan. 4, 1868, at Memphis, Tenn. and was buried on the banks of the Mississippi river. COPE. Died 11-04-1963. Mrs. Adelaide Cope, 99, believed to be Jerseyville’s oldest citizen, died at six-ten oclock Thursday evening, April 11, at Waters Nursing Home where she had been a patient the past six weeks. Prior to her last illness, Mrs. Cope had made her home for many years with her daughter, Mrs. Scott Hardman, 405 West Pine Street, Jerseyville. Reverend Harold E. Lane, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville, officiated at funeral services held at three o’clock Easter Sunday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Burial was in the Grimes-Neely Cemetery, west of Jerseyville. Mrs. Cope was born in Jersey County on December 29, 1863, a daughter of the late Gershon Clay and Caroline D Sandidge Patterson. Despite her advanced age, Mrs. Cope had enjoyed fairly good health and maintained an active interest in everyday affairs. Her survivors are her daughter, Mrs. Hardman; one son, W. Austin Cope, Jerseyville businessman and teacher; six grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter. Her husband, William J. Cope, a daughter, Bertha, and a son, Orville A. Cope, preceded her in death.
COPE. Died 27-03-1989. Alberta Cope, 87, of Fieldon died March 27, 1989 at the Jersey Community Hospital. She was born Nov. 6, 1901 in Fieldon to the late Russell and Alice Ridenour. She was married to the late Wesely Cope. He died in February, 1964. She was a member of the Fieldon United Church of Christ in Fieldon. Surviving is one son, Glenn W. Cope of Fieldon. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Visitation was March 29 at Jacoby Brothers funeral Home. Funeral services were Thursday March 30. The Rev. Jean Erb officiated. Burial was at Fieldon Cemetery. Fieldon United Church of Christ is the memorial.

He died at 9:20 a.m. on January 26 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Alton. Interment was in the Fieldon Cemetery. Born September 20, 1902 he was the son of Lonnie M. and Aliza Plumb Cope. Mr. Cope was a laborer. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. William J. Briggs of Jerseyville and Mrs. Thomas Siek of Godfrey; one brother Earl Cope of Grand Junction, Michigan. Alvis Leonard Cope, 71 year old Grafton resident, died Thursday evening, August 3, at 6 o’clock at the Waters Nursing Home in Jerseyville where he had resided the past thirteen months. Rev. A resident of Grafton for sixty years, Mr. Cope was a retired burner at Duncan Foundry in Alton. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of Jersey County Barracks 1395. He is survived by two daughters and six sons, Miss Josephine Cope and Russell O. Cope of Grafton, Mrs. Robert Richards of Brighton, Leonard A. Cope of Auburn, Wash., Claude E. Cope of Jerseyville, Robert H. Cope of Independence, Mo., Jerome S. Cope of Granite City, Seaman 3 Ralph D. Cope of the U. S. Navy at El Cajon, Calif. Mr. Cope is also survived by twenty-three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one brother. COPE. Died 19-06-1992. Aaron Cope, 75, died at 2:40 p.m. Friday June 19, 1992, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Alton. He was a retail cars salesman with an Oldsmobile and Cadillac dealer from 1941 to 1967; a salesman with Oliver Farm Machinery; and a Chicago Motor Club AAA Territorial Representative, retiring in 1978. Cope was a member of the Ainad Shrine Temple of East St. Louis, Scottish Rites Bodies of Belleville, Order of the Eastern Star 656 of Jerseyville, Elks Lodge 1016 of Effingham and Effingham Presbyterian Church. Born in Kemper Nov. 21, 1916, he was a son of the late WIlliam Austin and Alice N. (Sanders) Cope. He married the former Pauline Voorhees in Jerseyville on Aug. 27, 1939. She died Nov. 16, 1986. Surviving are three sons, David P. Cope of Godfrey, James L. Cope of Washington, Pa., and William A. “Bill” Cope of Taylorville; two daughters, Nancy Jane Campbell of Morton and Judy Foxall of Bluford; 13 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and two sisters, Doris Jean Osmond of Burr Ridge and Norma L. Heureux of Dixon. A half brother, Wendell A. Jackson, preceded him in death. The retired flower farmer was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran. Born in Jersey County, his parents were the late Loney M. and Eliza Jane (Plumb) Cope. He married Marie Emery, who preceded him in death, and later married the former Jenny Gregory, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Linda Cope of Benton Harbor; two grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Silk of Godfrey. COPE. Died 13-12-1982. Herbert Lawrence Cope, 53, of Route 3, died at 7 a.m. today at his residence, following a brief illness. Born in Jersey County, son of Nina Mae (Johnson) Cope of Jerseyville and the late Pearl J. Cope, he was a clerical worker for the Secretary of State in the Driver’s License Station in Edwardsville. He married the former Dorothy East on April 5, 1953, in Fieldon. Surviving are his wife and mother; a daughter, Rhonda Downey of Jerseyville; a son, Michael of Jerseyville; and four grandchildren. Visitation will be from4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Robert Broeder officiating. COPE. Died 04-01-1952. Mrs. Julia Hart Cope, wife of Archie Cope of Alton, died Sunday, January 4, at 11:55 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Alton of a heart ailment. She had been a patient at the hospital since the preceding Monday. Mrs. Cope had been in ill health for five years, suffering from a cardiac condition, but had been able to be up and about the house and to attend to light household duties. The decedent was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Hart and was born April 22, 1884, in Stone City, Iowa. She resided in Jerseyville for a number of years and her marriage to Archie Cope took place November 9, 1912, at St. Francis Xavier Church in this city. Mr. and Mrs. Cope had been residents of Alton since 1926. Surviving her in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Helen, and two sisters, Mrs. James Bray and Mrs. Walter Powers of Jerseyville. A sister, Mrs. Bernard Gorman of Jerseyville died December 30. Funeral rites were held Wednesday morning, January 7, at nine o’clock at St. Mary’s Church in Alton and burial was in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
COPE. Keith C. Cope, 52, of Warren, Mich., formerly of the Fieldon area, died at 8:31 a.m. Saturday at Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Allen Park, Mich. He was a master electrician and served in the U.S. Air Force. Born in Illinois, he was a son of the late Claude and Jessie (Tucker) Cope. Surviving are a son, Robert K of Mattoon; two daughters, Cindy Negri of Great Falls, Mont., and Susan Chauvan of West Virginia Beach, Va., seven grandchildren; two brothers; and four sister. Memorial services were held Monday at Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home in Utica, Mich., Local memorial services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Hardin Presbyterian Church. COPE. Died 20-05-1950. Lester Cope, seventy-year-old resident of Otterville, died Saturday morning, May 20, at nine oclock at the Watson Nursing Home in Jerseyville. He had been ill for fifteen months, and was recently moved to the Nursing Home. The decedent was a son of the late Milo and Marian Faulkner Cope and was born in Jersey County on November 6, 1879. His age at the time of death was seventy years, six months, and fourteen days. He engaged in farm work for a number of years. Surviving Mr. Cope are his wife, Mrs. Blanche Cope; three sons, Mark Cope of St. Louis, Clyde and Paul Cope of Jerseyville; one daughter, Mrs. Marvin Drainer of Jerseyville, and one sister, Mrs. Jessie Landon of Chicago. He also leaves six grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home Monday afternoon, May 22, at two oclock. Reverend Raymond Liles conducted the rites and burial was in the Noble Cemetery.
COPE. Died 06-05-1928. Lilly Jeanette Dowdall Cope born at Grafton Dec. 20, 1863 died May 6. 65 years. Married John Cope of Jerseyville March 14, 1884. He preceded her. Six children; Albert J. Cope of Alton, Marie Cope, Edith White of St. Louis, Clinton Cope, Viola Patton, Ethyl Fuller all of whom survive. 12 grandchildren, 2 sisters Mrs. Thomas O’Neil of St. Louis and Mrs. John Tonkinson of Grafton, Edward Dowdall of Osage , MO. COPE. Died 09-10-1917. Mrs. Lucinda Cope, 100 years, died at home of her son, Milton Cope, in Cameron, Mo. Tuesday, October, 9. Funeral at Cameron. Mr. Cope was oldest pioneer of Jersey Co., having come to this county when a child of 6. Her husband, George Cope, died 25 years ago. Mother of 11 children: Mrs. Daniel Bray, Allie Cope, of Jersey. Co.; Mrs. Orange Sandidge of Adair, Okla., Milton Cope of Camerson Mo., and Joseph Cope of Joplin, Mo.
COPE. Died 21-12-1954. Luther Cope, a native of Jersey County, died Tuesday, December 21, at his home in Bloomfield, Missouri, following a short illness. The body was brought to Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville where friends may call. Services will be held at the Funeral Home Friday afternoon, December 24, at two o’clock. Reverend Carl Moman will officiate and interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mr. Cope is a retired farmer. he was a son of the late Allen and Cynthia Warner Cope, and his age at the time of death was eighty-five years, one month and twenty days. The decedent is survived by two sons, Clyde M. Cope of Jerseyville and Elbert Cope of Seattle, Washington; one sister, Mrs. Mark Welch of Decatur; two brothers William and Fred Cope of Des Moines, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. John Powel of East Hardin, five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
COPE. Died 04-04-1984. The funeral of Mary A. Cope, 80, of Fieldon was conducted at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home Sunday afternoon by the Rev. Robert Broeder with burial in Fieldon Cemetery. Her death occurred at 12:08 p.m. May 4 at Jersey Community Hospital. She was born June 1, 1903 in Fieldon, daughter of the late Frank and Olga Butt Cope. Her nephew, Glenn W. Cope of Fieldon, is her only survivor.
COPE. The funeral of Mrs. Mary Irene Cope of Grafton was conducted at 2p.m. Thursday at Gubser Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert Patterson. Burial was in Scenic Hill Cemetery. She died unexpectedly at 12:35 p.m. Dec. 18 at the Jerseyville Care Center where she had been a short time. She was born Oct. 10, 1902 in Calhoun County, a daughter of Jesse and Myrtle Shannon Foval. Mrs. Cope was a past matron of Chapter 318 Grafton Order of Eastern Star where she was a 50-year member. She was survived by a daughter, Dorothy Bell of Fairview Heights; one son, Loren Russell Cope of St. Louis and a brother Russell Foval of Decatur; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Clinton Cope, and one brother preceded her in death. Eastern Star services were conducted Wednesday evening at the funeral home. The Heart Fund had been designated as a memorial.
COPE. On Nov. 14, 1858 was born Milo Cope, son of James and Mahala Whisman Cope. His father, James Cope, was one of the early settlers of Jersey Co., coming here from North Carolina with his father about 1828. Settled on farm 2 miles west of Jerseyville. Milo is one of 11 children, none of whom are still living, 8 of whom reside in Jersey Co. Lenard, the eldest, is 72, Archibald, the youngest is 50 years. Milo grew to manhood on his fathers farm and Jan. 31, 1879 married Mariam Faulkner. 6 children Lester, Sarah, Olive who died in infancy; Clark, who died at age 17, Jessie, wife of Henry Landon and Blanch at home. All reside in Otterville. His wife died Jan. 30, 1904

COPE. Died 28-10-1966. Mrs. Myrtle S. Cope, whose home was at 405 Franklin Street, this city, died Friday morning, October 28, at 7:40 oclock at the Jersey Community Hospital where she had been a patient for six days. She was the widow of Jesse cope. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where final rites were held Sunday afternoon at 3:30 oclock. Rev. H. O. Renken, pastor of Peace United Church of Christ, of which she was a member, officiated and interment was in Grimes Cemetery. Mrs. cope was a daughter of the late Samuel and Caroline Cope Sinclair and was born in Jersey County on September 23, 1887. Her age at death was 79 years, 1 month, and 5 days. Surviving Mrs. Cope are a sister and brother, Moss Emma Sinclair and Grover E. Sinclair, of Jerseyville.
COPE. Died 08-02-1990. Nina Mae Cope, 84, died at 3:05 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 1990, at her residence. Before retiring, she was a schoolteacher in Jersey and Logan counties. Born in New Holland, she was the daughter of the late John R. and Mary Ellen (Mossbarger) Johnson. She married Pearl J. Cope on Feb. 9, 1929, in Greene County, and he died on March 24, 1973. Surviving are a grandson, Michael Cope of Jerseyville; a granddaughter, Rhonda Downey of Jerseyville; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. A son, Herbert L. Cope, preceded her in death. Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are at 2 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Rick Francis officiating. Burial is in Grimes-Neely Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to Peace United Church of Christ, Jerseyville, Building Fund.
COPE. Died 16-11-1986. Pauline V. Cope, 68, of Effingham, Ill. formerly of Jerseyville, died at 5:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, 1986 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Effingham. She was born in Jersey County, daughter of the late Richard H. and Nina (Nail) Voorhees. On Aug. 27, 1939, in Jerseyville, she married Aaron Cope, and he survives. Mrs. Cope was a self-employed piano and organ teacher and a former organist of the First Presbyterian Church of Effingham. Besides her husband, surviving are three sons, David P. Cope of Godfrey, James L. “Jim” Cope of Washington, Pa., and William A. “Bill” Cope of West Lafayette, Ind., two daughters, Nancy Jane Campbell of Morton Ill., and Judith L. Harrell of Bluford, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; four great grandchildren and a sister, Doris V. Gubser of Godfrey. Visitation is scheduled 4 to 8 p.m. today at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham and 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. At the First Presbyterian Church of Jerseyville, visitation will continue from 8:30 a.m. Wednesday until time of services at 10 a.m. The Revs. Russell Stark and Simon A. Simon will officiate. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the First Presbyterian Church of Effingham, where she was a member.
COPE. Died 24-03-1973. Funeral rites for Pearl J. (Cappy) Cope of RR 3 Jerseyville were held Monday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. Leonard Todd officiating. His death occurred at 1:35 a.m. on March 24 at Jersey Community Hospital. Interment was in Grimes Cemetery. Born July 3, 1906 in Jersey County he was the son of E. J. and Catherine Maple Cope. A farmer, Mr. Cope was a member of the United Church of Christ in Fieldon, Fieldon Masonic Lodge and a longtime member of Farm Bureau. His survivors are his wife, Nina M. Johnson Cope; one son, Herbert Cope of Jerseyville; two grandchildren and a great grandchild; and his mother, Mrs. Catherine Cope of Hardin. His father and a brother preceded him in death. Masonic services were conducted at Jacoby Funeral Home Sunday evening. The Heart Fund has been designated as a memorial.

The World War II veteran was a business agent for Jerseyville Local 646. Survivors include two grandchildren; and three sisters, Alberta Golob of Godfrey, Rosemary Bain of Bellville and Thelma Leidner of Greenville. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m Thursday with the Rev. James Pepper officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.
COPE. Died 11-12-1968. Services for Troy Cope, 46 year old Fieldon resident, were held Saturday afternoon at half past one o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. Leonard Todd of Moro officiating. Interment was in the Fieldon Cemetery. Visitation hours were held at the Funeral Home. Mr. Cope, a machine adjuster at Olin Mathieson in East Alton, died December 11 at Eunice Smith Home in Alton where he had resided for ten days. He was a son of Ward Cope and the late Mrs. Ella Meinsinger Cope and was born in Jersey County August 24, 1922. Surviving him in addition to his father are three sisters, Mrs. Wilbur Wisnasky of Ocean Springs, Miss., Mrs. James Weaver and Mrs. Mary Bell Seehausen of Fieldon, two brothers, Ivan Cope of Cottage Hills. His mother, one sister, Theresa, and one brother, Vernon, preceded him in death.

Cope of Jerseyville; three sisters, Alberta Golob of Godfrey; Rosemary Bain of Belleville and Thelma Leidner of Mulberry Grove. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jacoby Funeral Home. COPE. Died 28-10-1965. William Austin Cope, retired Jerseyville businessman and school teacher, died unexpectedly Thursday night, October 28, at 11:55 oclock at his home, 213 East Pearl Street, this city. Mr. and Mrs. Cope had spent Thursday evening in Godfrey. He became ill after retiring for the night and his death occurred within a short time. Visitation hours were at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where Masonic services were conducted Saturday evening at eight o’clock. He had been a Mason for forty years, joining the fraternal organization in Freeburg, and transferring his membership to Jerseyville in 1943. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at two o’clock at the First Baptist Church where he was teacher of the Men’s Bible Class. Rev. Carlton G. Christenson, pastor of the church, officiated at the rites and burial was in Grimes Cemetery west of Jerseyville. Mr. Cope was engaged in the teaching profession about twenty-five years. His first position was at Henderson school west of Jerseyville at the age of eighteen. His last position was as a member of the faculty at the Jerseyville East Elementary School. After his retirement from the teaching field Mr. Cope died substitute teaching. He attended Illinois State Teachers College at Carbondale and continued his degree through correspondence work. The family moved to Jerseyville in 1937 from Godfrey where he was engaged in the Round Oak heating business and also taught school. In 1938 he purchased the Oliver machinery agency from Downey and Beckner and the business became known as Austin Cope & Son. For a period of fifteen years Mr. Cope was sales representative for the Oliver Company. In 1947 the firm erected a new building and entered into the automobile business along with its farm machinery. The firm disposed of the Oliver agency in 1957. Since retiring from business six years ago Mr. Cope had sold real estate at various times. He was a son of the late WIlliam Jacob and Adeline Patterson Cope and was born in Jersey County on June 24, 1890. His age at the time of death was seventy-five years four months and four days. Mr. Cope’s death occurred as he and his wife were making plans to mark their golden wedding anniversary. He is survived by his wife, the former Alice Sanders to whom he was married December 4, 1915 in Troy, Mo., two sons, Aaron, Jerseyville businessman, and Wendell of Des Moines, Iowa; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Norma) L’Heureux of Dixon and Mrs. Doris Osmond of Hinsdale; one sister, Mrs. Olive M. Hardman of Jerseyville, nine grandchildren and one great grandson.
COREY. Ethel Mae Corey, 90, died at 1:30 a.m. today, Sept. 5, 1990, at Rosewood Care Center in Alton. Born in Grafton, she was the daughter of the late William and Anna (Eckman) Tucker. She married Clarence N. Corey on April 4, 1921, in Grafton. He died June 17, 1948. Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy McKee of Godfrey; and a grandson. Visitation is from 9 a.m. Friday until service time at 11 a.m. at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. the Rev. Kenneth Edleman will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Elm Street Presbyterian Church of Alton, where she was a member.
CORNELL. Carol Ann Cornell, 27, of Arlington Heights, died at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, 1988, at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, after a long illness. She was the granddaughter of Katherine Munsterman of Jerseyville. Born in Troy, Ohio, she was the daughter of Robert and Jane (Munsterman) Cornell of Tipp, Ohio. In addition to her parents and grandmother, surviving are her paternal grandmother, two brothers and a sister. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where a prayer service will be red at 6 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Church in Jerseyville with the Rev. Henry Schmidt as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of America.
CORNS. Died 26-10-1901. John Wesley Corns born near Portsmouth, Ohio, April 1, 1816. Went to Kentucky with parents. Later returned to Ohio and at Rockville learned trade of stone cutting. Lived and worked at trade in Ripley, Sciotoville and Ironton. Superintended construction of large percent of buildings put up there in his day. On April 15, 1842 married Elizabeth Scott who survives. Seven children – two sons and five daughters. 12 grandchildren. Six great-grandchildren. Moved to Illinois March 1890 and settled in Jersey. ME church in Ohio but that church dissolved and he did not renew membership. He maintained his Christian life by the habit of daily reading and portion of the scriptures and cultivating meek and quiet spirit. Died Oct. 26, 1901. 85 years.
CORNS. Miss Rhoda Hannah Corns, 86, died Thursday morning, October 26, at 10:55 oclock at her home on Maple Avenue. Miss Corns sustained a fracture of the hip in a fall at her home several weeks ago and since that time had been confined to her bed. Miss Corns was born in Sciotoville, Ohio, on August 31, 1847, the daughter of the late John W. and Elizabeth Scott. For many Years she has been a resident of Jerseyville. Miss Corns death occurred on the 32nd anniversary of the death of her father. Surviving the deceased are one sister, Miss Josephine Corns, and two brothers, James and William Corns all of this city. Funeral services were held from the home Sunday afternoon, October 29, at 2:30 oclock, Rev. W. L. Hanbaum officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery.
CORNS. News has been received in Jerseyville of the death of Samuel Milton Corns, who was born and reared in Jersey county, at his home in Staunton, Ill., on December 18. Heart trouble, from which he had suffered for several years, was the cause of his demise, the end coming with a sudden attack of the disease. He was aged 65 years, 3 months and 26 days. Mr. Corns was united in marriage with Miss Alice Giles of Portsmouth, Ohio, on August 30, 1894. The couple resided in various counties in Illinois for a number of years and moved to Staunton five years ago from Edwardsville, where Mr. Corns was employed as a brass worker. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church. Funeral services were held from the Huntman Funeral Home on December 20, Rev. J. A. Oesch, pastor of the Staunton Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery at Staunton. The pallbearers were nephews of Mr. Corns – Oscar Lemon and Harold Meyers of Alton, Harry Breitweiser and Orville Breitweiser of Delhi, Phillip Corns of Greenville and Jess manning of Staunton. Surviving the deceased are his widow, three sisters, Mrs. J. F. Meyers of Alton, Mrs. Geo. Breitweiser of Springfield and Mrs. P. W. Southernland of Madison, Ill.; one brother, Joseph Corns of Greenville, also a number of nephews, nieces, other relatives and many friends. Among those from Jersey county who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Homer Roberts and son, Roy, Mrs. Reba Kanallakan, of Jerseyville, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Breitweiser and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Breitweiser of Delhi.

CORNS. Died 24-05-1942. William Parker Corns, well known Jersey resident, died at two-thirty o’clock Sunday morning, May 24, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Don H. Frost, in University City, Mo., where he had been for the past two weeks. Corns was the son of the late John Wesely and Elizabeth Scott Corns, and was born in Wheelersburg, Ohio,, August7, 1881. At the time of his death he was aged eighty years, nine months and seventeen days. Mr. Corns is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emmas Corns, three daughters, Miss Blanche Corns of Jerseyville, Mrs. Don H. Frost of St. Louis and Mrs. J. Fred Boehm of Alton; three grandchildren and one brother, James W. Corns of Jerseyville. For many years the deceased was engaged in the implement business with the late Mott Brown. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Chapel, Tuesday, May 26th, at two-thirty o’clock. Reverend M. C. Foltz officiated and interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery.
CORNWELL. Died 30-10-1945. Mrs. Katherine Cornwell, wife of E. G. Cornwell, died 1:15 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30 at her home near McClusky, following a few days illness. The deceased was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Schuffel and was born in New York. Her age at the time of her death was 85 years and 19 days. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Cornwell is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Schorn of Mason, Illinois, and Mrs. Anna Fogleman of Litchfield, two nephews and one niece. Funeral services were held at the Bethel Church at East Newbern, Monday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. The Reverend John Henderson of Godfrey officiated and interment was in the Lamb Memorial Cemetery .

Corrington Oct. 9 1823and lived in Millersburg until 1830 when they came to Illinois to Jacksonville to farm in Greene County. Her husband became an itinerant at an early day for many years she had no settled home, changing from place to place. Took deep interest in education of her sons, five of whom attended McKendree College, two of them graduating in classical course. Wm. Hugh and James Fletcher. Funeral at Dorchester ME church. Family lot at Bunker Hill.
Republican Examiner, August 12, 1881. Rhoda B. Corrington. The death of Rhoda Berry Corrington occurred on Sabbath, July 31, 1881 at the house of her son, N. A. Corrington, of Dorchester, Il. She had been very feeble since the death of her husband last Nov. She was in her 79th year. She was born in Cyntherence, KY. Her maiden name was Larimore. She was married to J. B. Corrington, Oct. 9, 1823, and they lived in Millersburg until 1830, when the removed to a farm near Greenfield, Greene Co. Her husband becoming an itinerant (preacher) at an early day, for many years she had no settled home, changing from place to place, as long as physical strength was sufficient for so arduous a work. Yet sacrificing most cheerfully all things earthly for it is a heavy (heavenly?) ask. In their superanuation their time was spent most pleasantly at the home of their son, N. A. Corrington. Sister Corrington did the work of an itinerants (preachers) wife faithfully for many years, endearing herself to a large circle of acquaintances in Southern Il. Leaving behind her the flavor of genuine piety and the conviction that she was an earnest, humble Christian. She took deep interest in regard to the education of her sons, five of whom attended school at McKendree College, two of them graduating in the classical course—William Hugh and James Fletcher. Only two of the children survive the parents—N. A. and James Fletcher—the latter being a member of the St. Louis conference and pastor of St. Lukes church, St. Louis. The writer had known the family since 1836, and always found Aunt Rhoda a consistent Christian, a steadfast friend and a good large-souled woman. We found her with ripe experience in her last sickness, calm, cheerful, hopeful, with longings for the better land. Among her last breathings were words betokening her happy frame of mind, such as:
O, praise the Lord-bless his holy name
None but Jesus
The Lord is very near to me –Hallelujah!
and the last words were:
Jesus can make a dying bed
Feel soft as downy pillows are.
The funeral occurred on Tuesday Aug. 2. from the Dorchester ME. Church. She had requested the writer some months previous to her death to preach the funeral sermon, and, with her characteristic modesty and humanity, said, But do not pronounce a eulogy on me. This service we performed with mournful pleasure–a service which her husband had performed for us when a dear one lay a corpse in Upper Alton 22 years ago. Revs. B. R. Pierce and M. P. Wilkin, of Brighton, and Rev. Wm. Gill and Like?? Deliand of Dorchester assisted in the service. The body was deposited in the family lot at Bunker Hill, where a suitable monument had been erected under the superintendence of Dr. Corrington some time previous to his death. The long lives of active, faithful workers in the church, such as Dr. Corrington and wife, are a rich heritage to the communities where they lived for all time to come. J. W. Caldwell Gillespie, Il. CORY. Died 1918. Almirah Ely Cory, wife of Levi D. Cory, died at home of Mrs. Charles Voorhees on S. State St. where she and her husband have been boarding. 84 years of age on 25 Oct. Leaves husband, two sons; Joel E. Cory of Jer. and Wm. Cory of Mt. Wilson, Ca. One daughter, Mrs. James W. Roberts of Jer. A daughter Mrs. Flora Miles, wife of Charles J. Miles of Hastings, Neb. died a few years ago. Four grandchildren, Roy Cory of St. L., Maurice Cory of Fond du Lac, Wis., Leo Roberts of Albuquerque, NM and Frances Jane Cory, infant daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Cory of Calif., who were in St. Louis enroute home a visit with their parents. Mrs. Louis Davison, Mrs. Clarence Davison, Mrs. Anna Vaughn and Mrs. John A. Shephard of Jer. are her sisters. Her brothers, George Ely of St. Louis and Gilbert Ely of Bunker Hill, died some years ago. She was a descendent of one of the oldest families in the U.S., her ancestors having come here in the early Colonial days. Funeral Presbyterian church. Rev. W.S. Neely. CORY. Died -02-1880. Benjamin F. Cory died at home of his mother, Mrs. Martha A. Corey in Jersey. Born in Darien, Geneseo Co. New York, Oct. 13th, 1856. Came to Jersey 1872. Had been a teacher. Fine disciplinarian. In 1876-7-8 he was reporter for the Republican. Lately employed by Jersey County Democrat. His remains were taken to Darien, NY accompanied by Rufus Corey. Peace to his ashes.
CORY. Died 15-04-1976. The funeral of Mrs. Blanche P. Cory, 81, of RR 1 Grafton was conducted 17 April from Gubser Funeral Home with Rev. R.E. George officiating. Burial was in Scenic Hill Cemetery, Grafton. Her death occurred at 12:45 a. m. on 15 April at D’Adrian Convalescent Center in Godfrey. She was born on 21 July, 1894 in Jersey County, a daughter of Sylvester and Susan Claridge Patton. Mrs Cory was a member of Ruby Rebekah Lodge of Jerseyville and the United Methodist Church, Grafton. She is survived by one son, Paul Cory of Grafton; three daughters, Mrs. James (Dorothy) Norman of Columbia, TN, Mrs. Howard (Pauline) Gropple of Alton and Mrs. Wayne (Marjorie) Wyman of Oblong; eight grandchildren; three grat grandchildren. Her husband, Walter W. Cory, died June 13, 1968.
CORY. Died 17-01-1945. Mrs. Capitola M. Cory, wife of Lester J. Cory of Jerseyville, died 6 p.m. Wednesday at the memorial Hospital in Alton where she had been a patient for the past week. Mrs. Cory was the daughter of the late Milton S. and Minerva Miller Ferguson and was born in Ashland, Illinois, August 1, 1896. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Cory is survived by one son, Charles F. Stanley of Wood River, one daughter, Mrs. Mildred E. Hurley of Jerseyville; one sister, Mrs. Irwin Pilger of Beardstown; five brothers, William Ferguson of Kane; George Ferguson of Beardstown; Guy Ferguson of Ashland; Ben Ferguson of Pleasant Plains; and Robert Ferguson of Wood River; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held from the Cory home, 518 Maple Jerseyville, Friday, January 19 at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. M. C. Foltz, pastor of the Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery.
CORY. Died 26-04-1950. Funeral Rites were held Sunday afternoon, April 30, at three o’clock at the Gubser Funeral Home for Charles E. Cory, a retired railroad worker, whose death occurred Wednesday night, April 26 in Camden, New Jersey. Reverend Dale Harmon, pastor of the Methodist Church, conducted the services and interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mr. Cory was a son of the late Walter S., and Clara Smith Cory, and was born in Jersey County in July 1877. He resided in Jersey County as a young boy. Mr. Cory was a cousin of Mrs. H. R. Gledhill and Lester Cory of Jerseyville.
CORY. Died 16-03-1987. Dora Cory, 84, of rural Grafton, died March 16 at Jersey Community Hospital. She was born Dec. 19, 1902 in Jersey County to Frank and Emma (Cooper) Butt. She married Raymond E. Cory on Nov. 6, 1919; he died Feb. 6, 1969. Survivors include son William David Cory of Grafton, two grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. The funeral was March 18 at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville with James Pepper officiating. Burial was in Scenic Hill Cemetery at Grafton. A memorial has been established to the Heart Fund.
CORY. Died 1895. Sudden death of E. A. Cory at his home near Jerseyville. was a native of Illinois and moved with his family to this county in 1889.
CORY. Died 18-06-1942. Miss Frances Margaret Cory, 21 year old Grafton girl whose marriage to Pvt. Orville Ridenour of Ft. Brady, Michigan, formerly of Fieldon, was set to take place Friday, June 19th, was fatally injured in an auto-truck crash near Monticello Seminary in Godfrey about 12:30 a.m. Thursday, June 18th. The young soldier is a patient in the Alton Memorial Hospital suffering with a fractured hip and head injuries. The young woman was the only daughter of Ray and Dorothy Hooper Cory, and was born in Grafton, December 12, 1920. In addition to her parents, she is survived by one brother, Wm. of Grafton. Funeral rites are set for Sunday, June 21 at 2:p.m. at the Methodist Church in Grafton. The Rev. Dale Harmon will officiate and interment will be in the American Legion Cemetery.
CORY. Died 26-06-1968. Graveside services for Miss Helen K. Cory of Springfield were held at Oak Grove Cemetery Friday, June 28, at 12:30 o’clock. Rev. M. Edwards Breed, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church of this city, officiated at the rites here. Gubser Funeral Home was in charge of the committal services. Funeral services for Miss Cory, a native of Jerseyville, were held Friday morning at 10 o’clock at Boardman – Smith Chapel in Springfield with Rev. Richard C. Clausen officiated. Miss Cory died Wednesday morning at her home at 1112 Fayette Street, Springfield. She had been a resident of Springfield for thirty-six years and was in the employ of the Internal Revenue Service for twenty-seven years prior to her retirement in 1960. A daughter of the late Walter B. and Josie Kirby Cory, Miss Cory was born in Jerseyville on April 3, 1894. She was 74 years old. Prior to going to Springfield to reside, Miss Cory was in the employ of the late J. M. Page. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield, P. E. O. Chapter ES, Friendship Circle of Kings Daughters, Zonta Club, and Springfield Woman’s Club. Miss Cory was a cousin of Dwight Fulkerson and Mrs. Florence Howell of Jerseyville, Mrs. Hugh Wales of Champaign, Albert B. Cory of Edwardsville, Mrs. Marian Armentrout of Oakland, Calif., and Mrs. Ethel Letton of Lincoln, Nebraska.
CORY. Died at home of his brother, John A. Cory, in Jerseyville, June 10. Joel Cory. Joel Cory was born in Jerseyville Jan 23, 1844, 71 years. On March 14, 1865 married Kate M. Darlington, daughter of Robert Darlington. Three children, Wm., Minnie, and Stella. The former two surviving him, also his widow. They lived in Chulavista, CA. CORY. Died 23-11-1966. Funeral services for Lester J. Cory of 305 Sherman Street, this city, were held Saturday afternoon, November 26, at 1:30 o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Carlton G. Christenson, pastor of the First Baptist Church, conducted the rites and burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation hours were at the Funeral Home. Mr. Cory, a retired employee of the Jersey County Highway Department, died Wednesday evening, November 23, at 10:05 o’clock at the Jersey Community Hospital where he had been a patient for three days. He was a son of the late John and Myra Beatty Cory and was born in Jersey County, February 27, 1883. At the time of death he was aged 83 years, 8 months and 26 days. His survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Marian Armentrout of Hayward, California, four grandchildren, and fourteen great grand children. Preceding Mr. Cory in death were his parents, one daughter, Mrs. Florence Flamm, a son, John P. Cory, one sister, Mrs. Jospeh Fulkerson, and three brothers, George, Walter, and Harry Cory.

CORY. Died 1921. Levi D. Cory, one of the well known older citizens of Jerseyville, passed away Monday afternoon at four oclock, after an illness of less than a week’s duration. Mr. Cory was born in New Jersey Sept. 11, 1831, and at the time of his death was 90 years, 2 months, and 17 days of age. He came to Jersey County when four years of age with his parents, Joel and Sarah Cross Cory, pioneers of the county. He spent his boyhood days on the farm with his father and attended the local schools later going to college in Bunker Hill. Mr. Cory was married on October 4, 1853, to Almirah Ely, whose death occurred Jan. 14, 1918. Mrs. Cory is survived by two sons and one daughter, Joel E. Cory and Mrs. J. W. Roberts of this city, and Wilbur E. Cory of Mt. Wilson, Calif. A daughter, Mrs. Clarence J. Miles, died at her home in Hastings, Nebr., on Oct. 18, 1915. He also leaves a number of grandchildren, only one brother, Walter S. Cory of Camden, N.J. survives. Practically all of Mr. Cory’s life has been spent on the farm, although for several years he was engaged in carious business enterprises in this city, having spent a few years in the grocery and milling businesses in Jerseyville. He retired from active business about fifteen years ago. The funeral services will be held from the home of his son Joel E. Cory to the Presbyterian Church on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, the Rev. Harold S. Farrill officiating. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

CORY. Died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Dr. Chas. W. Enos, Denver, Colo., Saturday morning May 9th, 1896, aged 67 years. In May 1856, she was married to Abner Cory, who died in this city in 1875. Until a few years ago, Mrs. Cory resided in this city, when she went to Denver to reside with her daughter. She was a member of the Baptist church, and a most excellent woman. The funeral took place from the residence of Dr. J. W. Enos in this city, Tuesday afternoon, Rev. J. J. Porter officiating.

CORY. Died -12-1883. Mrs. Joel Cory, Sr., born Basken Ridge, Somerset Co., NJ June 8, 1806. Married Joel Cory at that place March 6, 1828. Nee Cross. To Illinois 1834 settled on “Cory Farm.” 12 children, six-living: Mary Stelle, Levi, John, Joel, Sarah Newton and Walter. Mr. Cory died Feb.1872. She was 78 years. Baptist Church.
CORY. Died 24-04-1979. Funeral Mass for Mrs. Opal Pauline Cory, 53, of R. 4., Jerseyville will be celebrated at 10 a.m. April 27 at St. Mary’s Church, Westwoods with Father William Hembrow celebrant. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Her death occurred at 3:25 p.m. April 24 at Springfield Memorial Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born Sept. 2, 1925, in Fieldon, a daughter of Frederick A. and Stella Isringhausen Kanallakan. Her survivors are her husband Junior Cory; two sons, Terry of Grafton and Steve of Jerseyville; her mother, Stella Kanallakan of Jerseyville; four brothers, Delbert and Eldon Kanallakan of Jerseyville, Darrell of Grafton and Tony of Fieldon; two sisters, Norine Helton of Eldred and Pat Snider of Jerseyville. Visitation from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where the Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. The Cancer and Kidney Funds have been designated as memorials.
CORY. Died 11-03-1983. Pauline Cory, 57, of R. 1 Grafton died at 2:18 a.m. March 11 at Jersey Community Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was born Aug. 12, 1925 in Hardin, daughter of Charles and Agnes Ferguson Calvey and had been employed at Nugent-Schapanshki Storage plant for 18 years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband, William Cory; daughter, Linda Hancock of Springfield; a son, William R. Cory of Grafton; three grandchildren; a sister, Leona Roth of Kampsville; two brothers, Earl Calvey of Clarksville, Mo., and Donald Calvey of Pittsfield. she was preceded in death by one sister and one brother. Services were conducted March 14 at Gubser Funeral Home by the Rev. James Pepper. Burial was in Scenic Hill Cemetery.

Cory, a retired Jersey County farmer, died Thursday morning, February 6, at 12:45 oclock at his home in Otter Creek Township following an extended period of ill health. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Jersey Community Hospital. Rev. James Pepper, pastor of the Bible Baptist Church in Jerseyville, officiated a the final rites held Saturday afternoon at two oclock at the Gubser Funeral Home. Burial was in Scenic Hill Cemetery at Grafton. Visitation hours were held at the Funeral Home. Mr. Cory was a son of the late William and Rose Walker Cory, and was born in Jersey County September 7, 1896. His age at death was 72 years, 4 months, and 29 days. In addition to farming Mr. Cory also engaged in the carpentry trade. Surviving him are his wife. Mrs. Dora Cory, a son, William D. Cory of Grafton; two sisters, Mrs. Bertie Patton of Evansdale, Iowa, Mrs. Fannie Johnson of Brighton, Mrs. Flossie Blackwell of East St. Louis, and Mrs. Noah (Mildred) Blackwell of Hardin.
CORY. Died 25-04-1986. Ronald E. Cory, 45, Jerseyville caterer, died unexpectantly April 25 at St. Mary’s Heath Center in Richmond Heights, Mo. He was born Dec. 18, 1940, in Jerseyville, the son of Mary Lois Darr Cory of Jerseyville and the late John Cory. He was a caterer and also worked as a dry cleaner at Town and County Cleaners in Jerseyville. He was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. He married Ruth Ann Alexander on Sept. 1, 1962, in Jerseyville, and she survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Tammy, at home; a sister, Sharon Cory of Canton; and his mother. A funeral Mass was celebrated by the Rev. Lenny Sudlick and the Rec. Jerry Bunse April 28 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Burial was at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. The Heart Fund has been designated as a memorial.
CORY. Died 25-04-1941. Miss Rose Cory, 75, died Sunday evening, 25 April, at the home of her sister, Mrs. George Carstens, in Wood River. She had been in ill health for several months. Miss Cory was born in Kane October2, 1866. She had resided with her sister for the past ten years. Surviving her in addition to Mrs. Carstens, is another sister, Mrs. Lillian Tompkins of Chicago, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Carstens home in Wood River. Rev. O. C. Smith, pastor of the Methodist Church, conducted the rites and the body was brought to Kane for interment in the Kane Cemetery.

Donald Roley of Brighton officiated and burial was in Scenic Hill Cemetery. The death of Mr. Cory occurred at four thirty o’clock Thursday morning at St. Joseph Hospital in Alton where he had been a patient for a day. Mr. Cory was born in Jersey County, a son of the late William and Rose Walker Cory. His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Blanche Patton Cory of Grafton; one son, Paul Cory of Godfrey; three daughters, Mrs. James Norman of Columbia Tenn., Mrs. Howard Gropple of Alton and Mrs. Wayne Wyman of Oblong; one brother, Ray Cory of Grafton; four sisters, Mrs. Flossie Blackwell of E. St. Louis, Mrs. Fannie Johnson of Brighton, Mrs. Mildred Blackwell of Hardin, and Mrs. Bertie Patton of Iowa; eight grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Murray Bacon from N.J.. 82 years of age. Married October 1864. Eight children. Two died in youth. Surviving sons and daughters are; A.A. Corzine of Wichita, KS; Mrs. Rachel O? M of Jackson, MS; M. V. Corzine and Will C. of Jerseyville; Mrs. Bertha Nichols of Kansas City, MO; Florence Eastham of Decatur, IL. Mrs. Harry Voorhees is a sister. 17 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Funeral from 1st Baptist Church. Mrs. R. B. Favorite officiating. Burial in Oak Grove.
CORZINE. Died 1927. A large number of relatives and friends attended the funeral of Charles Corzine, retired Jerseyville oil manager, at the residence on Stryker Ave. Saturday afternoon. His death occurred in a pasture near his home on Wednesday afternoon last week, the result of a sudden attack of heart disease. Mr. Corzine was in his 67th year. He had retired on pension two years ago after having served for many years as local manager for the Standard Oil Company. The final rites were in charge of Rev. Joseph Jenkins, assisted by Rev. A. B. Carson, pastor of First Baptist church, Rev. Jenkins delivering the funeral sermon. Burial services at Oak Grove cemetery were in charge of Hickory Grove Camp. M.W.A., with C.P. Atchinson delivering the operation at the grave. Mr. Corzine is survived by his wife, two daughters and one son. The daughters are Mrs. Elmer Gowin of Jerseyville and Mrs. John W. Sweet of Terre Haute, IN and the son is Hershal Corzine of Alton. All the children were present at the obsequies. Jersey County News. Thursday Sept. 8, 1927.
CORZINE. Emma H. Sharp was born Nov. 24, 1869. From early childhood she attended the public school of Jerseyville, and graduated with honor from that institution, in the class of 1889. Those who attended the commencement exercises of that class, will remember Miss Sharp as the brilliant class poetess. She was possessed of a very quiet byr most affectionate disposition, but was always very firm in her decision between right and wrong; so that only when a child she gave her heart to the Savior’s keeping and has ever since lived a consistent and useful Christian life. For about twenty years she has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. She was joined in marriage to Murray V. Corzine, Oct. 21, 1891. Two children were born to them; Ruby and Chalmer, who with their father survive to mourn the loss of this dear wife and most affectionate mother. About one and a half years ago, Mrs. Corzine took upon herself the care of three invalid relatives; her aged grandmother, her mother and her great aunt. With these three to wait upon and her house-hold duties to perform, hers was a very busy life. Last February, her dear old grandmother was called home and only a short time ago, her mother was also laid to rest beside the grandmother. Shortly after her mother’s death, she too was taken ill and although her dear ones did all that could be done to bring about her recovery, she was taken from them. The roil and care of this life were finished and she was called home at 7:40 a.m. Nov. 1, 1906. She leaves a host of sorrowing friends and relatives who will sadly miss her cheerful presence.
CORZINE. Democrat News June 8, 1982: Eugeneia Corzine died 26 Nov. 1981 in Chicago where she had lived since 1935. Employed as secretary for Durkee Foods over 30 years. Studied voice at Chicago Conservatory of Music. Chairman of International Music Fund in 1971-74. Graveside services at Shipman cemetery where ashes were interred.
CORZINE. Graveside services for Eugenia Corzine will be held at 10 a.m., June 11 at the Chipman Cemetery, where the ashes will be interred. Miss Corzine, 72, died Nov. 26, 1981 in Chicago where she had lived since 1935. Employed as personnel secretary for Durkee Famous Foods for over 30 years, she retired in 1972. Miss Corzine became a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, international music fraternity, while studying voice at the Chicago Conservatory of Music. She served as president of the Chicago Alumnae Chapter, 1968-1971, and during her term of office the chapter entered the field of Bold Note for the partially-sighted. She was chairman of the International Music Fund for the organization, 1971-1974. As a member of the Chicago Stereo Camera Club, Miss Corzine received recognition for many prize slides.
CORZINE. Mrs. Frederica Corzine died of pneumonia at her home, June 14 1906. Funeral from home. Buried at Oak Grove. Born May 11, 1833 in Birkenwelsbuch Ort Schorndorf Wutenburg, Germany. Came in sail vessel with friends to America in 1856. In 1858 married David Wilson Corzine of Fidelity. Settled on farm west of Fidelity and lived there for 48 years. Five children; one son Wm. preceded her. Leaves one son, three daughters; Mrs. Mary Armstrong of Piasa, Mrs. Nellie Nelson of St. Louis, Carrie and George of Fidelity. Two sisters; Mrs. Caroline Bensinger and Mrs. Hillman of Philadelphia, and Jacob Schaefer of Morrisonville, IL. 9 grandchildren. Fidelity Baptist Church.
CORZINE. Died 20-12-1988. Miss Helen Trent Corzine, 83, of Jerseyville died Dec. 20 at Garnets Chateau. She was born July 19, 1905, in Alton, to the late William Henry and Nora Dell Miller Corzine. For over 25 yrs. she was a clinical nutritionist for the Veterans Administration in New York having retired for several years. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, American Diabetic Association, Jersey County Historical Society, Jersey County Women’s Club, Jersey County Homemakers Extension Association. She was also a member of the national honor associations in education Kappa Delta Pi and Pi Lammbda Theta. Survivors include one sister, Miss Bernadene Corzine of Chicago, and cousins. The body was cremated. A memorial service was held 22 Dec. at the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville with the rev. Charles Epperly officiating. Graveside services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of which she was a member. Arrangements were by Gubser Funeral Home.

Corzine, one of the older residents of Jerseyville, died at eleven-thirty o’clock Wednesday night at the Watson Nursing Home where he has been a patient for some time. The deceased was a son of the late franklin and Anna Bacon Corzine and was born in Jersey County April 9, 1870. His age at the time of death was eighty-one years, seven months, and five days. Surviving him are four daughters, Mrs. Ruby Wilhellm of Dubuque, Iowa, Mrs. Carl Haushalter of Jerseyville, Mrs. Emma McEvers and Anna L. Corzine of Winchester; one son, J. F. Corzine of Iceland; six grandchildren, two step-daughters, Mrs. S. L. Miss Costello Dies In Hospital: Mar 1952: Miss Elizabeth Mae Costello of Jerseyville, member of a well- known Jersey County family, died Thursday afternoon, February 28, at one-ten o’clock at Our Saviour’s Hospital in Jacksonville where she had been a patient since December 17. Miss Costello was a daughter of the late Thomas F., and Margaret Vaughn Costello, natives of Ireland, and was born in Jersey county on 27 May, 1885. She is survived by four sisters, Misses Anna, Mary, Margaret and Josephine Costello, and three brothers, Michael, Thomas and Harry, all of Jerseyville. Friends may call at Jacoby Brothers’ Funeral Home. Funeral rites were held Monday morning, March 3, at 9:30 am at St. Francis Xavier Church with Rev. Father John J. Clancy celebrant of Mass. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery.
COSTELLO. Died 20-10-1987. Josephine Costello, 95, of Jerseyville, died Oct. 20 at Garnet’s Chateau in Jerseyville. She was born Jan. 30, 1892, in Jersey county to the late Thomas and Margaret Vaughn Costello. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church in Jerseyville. Survivors include one niece, Marie Moore of Pueblo, CO. Visitation and wake were Oct. 22 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville: the Rev. Henry Schmidt celebrated the funeral Mass Oct. 23 at St. Francis Xavier Church. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery. St. Francis School and masses are the memorials.

COSTELLO. Thomas F. Costello died at his home five miles northwest of this city Monday, March 31st, 1908, aged 75 years, 3 months and 7 days. The funeral services will be conducted from St. Francis Xavier’s church at 10 a.m., Friday, Rev. P. H. Masterson will officiate.
COSTELLO. Mrs. Costello, an old lady living east of Bertmans warehouse died Thursday of last week, and was buried from the Catholic church Saturday. Republican Examiner, April 29, 1881.
COTTINGHAM. Died 30-06-1944. Mrs. Elizabeth A. Cottingham, wife of Ira Cottingham, manager of Country Life Insurance Company in Jersey County died at 3:30 a.m. Friday June 30 at her home in Jerseyville following an extended illness.. The deceased was the daughter of the late Henry and Eliza Holt Morris, and was born in Flanagan, Illinois, May 25, 1874. Her age at the time of her death was 70 years, one month and five days. Surviving her in addition to her husband are three daughters, Mrs. Don Dihel of Jerseyville, Miss Erma Cottingham of Carbondale and Mrs. Alta McCurray of Three Rivers, Mich.; two sons, Lloyd of Chicago and Lt. Carey Cottingham who is now serving in France, and nine grandchildren. Private funeral services were held at Gubsers Funeral Home, Sunday July 2 with Rev. M.C. Foltz officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove.

Final Rites for Ira Cottingham Set for Friday: Retired Auctioneer, Insurance Agent and Farmer, Died Early Wednesday Morning: Ira Cottingham died January 18, at 3:05 o’clock at the Watson Nursing Home in Jerseyville where he had resided for the past 6 weeks. He had been in failing health for sometime. The body is at Gubser Funeral Home where friends may call. Final rites for Mr. Cottingham will be held at the First Methodist Church in Jerseyville on Friday, 20 January, at two o’clock. Rev. F. W. Schwarzlose, pastor of the Church, will officiate at the services and interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr. Cottingham, known as Colonel Cottingham, had been a resident of Jersey County for the past 36 years, coming here from Peoria County. He assisted in the organization of the Country Life Insurance Company and served as General Agent for many years. He was also in charge of all Farm Bureau Insurance in the County until his retirement about seven years ago. While a resident of Peoria County he engaged in farming and specialized in pure breed livestock. Colonel Cottingham was an outstanding livestock auctioneer from 1910 to 1925 and his services were in demand all over the United States. He was interested in land clearing and was instrumental in promoting the project in the western part of Jersey County. Mr. Cottingham served as a member of the Board of education of the Jerseyville Grade School, and served as a school director in Peoria County while a resident there. The decedent was active in the work of the Methodist Church here as long as his health permitted and was a former Sunday School Superintendent of the local Methodist Church and in Peoria County. He was the son of the late Jeremiah and Nancy Kinzey Cottingham and was born June 4, 1869 at Eden Illinois. His age at the time of death was 86 years, 7 months and 14 days. Mr. Cottingham is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Don Dihel of Jerseyville, Miss Erma Cottingham of Champaign and Mrs. Howard McMurray of Holy Hill, Florida; two sons, Lloyd Cottinghamof Chicago and Carey Cottingham of Michigan City, Indiana; one half sister, Mrs. Harry Richardson of California; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. The death of his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Cottingham occurred in 1944. In recent years Mr. Cottingham had made his home with his son in law and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Dihel. He was moved to the nursing home about six weeks ago when Mrs. Dihel submitted to major surgery and was unable to care for him.
COTTINGHAM. Died 16-12-1978. A former resident, Sgt James Leonard Cottingham, 24, died at 3 p.m. Thursday at South Laguana Hospital in California following a traffic accident. He was born in Jerseyville, the son of Leonard Cottingham and Delores (Branham) Holland. He was a member of the Marine Corps stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA. He is survived by his parents and two sisters, Lela Groves of Hardin and Arvella Noel of Dow. Visitation will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday at Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin. A rosary service will be at 8:30 Sunday. Funeral Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Norberts Church in Hardin with Rev. Roy Bauer officiating. Burial will be in the Hardin Cemetery.
COUGHLIN. Died 01-09-1982. Louise H. Coughlin, 57, 21 Davis Drive, Jerseyville died at 2:40 a.m. Sept. 1 at the Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis. Born Jan. 20, 1926 in Fidelity, she was the daughter of G. O. Hoffstetter of Jerseyville and the late Martha M. Hoffstetter. She was a member of the Firs Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband, Fred Coughlin, Jerseyville; one son, Timothy of Alton; her father; and one sister, Dorothy Cadle of Alton. The funeral was conducted Saturday morning at Jacoby Funeral Home by the Reverend Simon A. Simon with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. The American Cancer Society has been named as a memorial.
COUGHLIN. Died 28-04-1951. Jerseyville relatives received word Sunday of the death of Mrs. Opal Hughes Coughlin, a former resident of this city which occurred at three o’clock that afternoon at a hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana, where she had been taken for treatment of injuries sustained in a fall down a flight of stairs at her home on Saturday. The family resides in Rockville, Indiana. The body was brought to Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville Wednesday noon where friends called until the hour of the funeral. Services were held at the Funeral Home at eleven o’ clock Thursday morning, May 3, and interment was in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. Mrs. Coughlin was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Hughes of Jerseyville and was born in Greene County. Her age at the time of death was forty-two years. She is survived by her husband, John Coughlin; two sons, Robert and Jackie; one daughter, Georgia Carol, all of Rockville; two brothers, Henry Hughes of Jerseyville and Nelson Hughes of Godfrey, and four sisters, Mrs. J. C. Parish of Jacksonville, Mrs. Ross Cummings, Margaret Hughes and Mrs. James Dolan of Jerseyville.
COULTAS. Died 03-11-1979. Dorothy M. Coultas, 79, of Jacksonville, formerly of Jerseyville died at 12:30 p.m. 3 Nov. at Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville. She was born Aug. 12, 1900 in Jerseyville, the daughter of Edward and Mary L. French Nelson. She married Bryon C. Coultas and he died in 1958. She is survived bu one son, Edward C. Coultas of Park Forest and three grandchildren. Funeral Services were held at the Geilham-Buckanan Funeral Home in Jacksonville with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville at 1 p.m. (today) Monday. The family has named two memorials, the cancer fund and the Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church in Jacksonville.
COULTHARD. Died 19-12-1911. Mrs. Elizabeth M. Coulthard died Dec. 19, 1911 at her home. Born in Bourbon County, KY, Aug. 17, 1837. In 1851 parents, Crawford and Marie Terry moved to Owen Co., KY on a farm until death of Father. Widow and 6 children continues to live on farm until death of mother. Eldest son, Thomas Terry, enlisted in Confederate Army, Stephen, the second, joined the Union Army. Their home now broken up, Mrs. Coulthard with her two sisters and youngest brother, William, moved to Ruddles Mill, KY. Here she met W. H. Coulthard whom she married Dec. 8, 1864. Five children. COULTHARD. Died 18-02-1952. Word has been received in Jerseyville of the death of Mrs. Emma C. Coulthard, wife of H.P. Coulthard, a retired insurance inspector, which occurred in the Wesley Hospital in Oklahoma City on Monday, Feb. 18. Death followed an illness of pneumonia. Mr. Coulthard is a former resident of Jerseyville. The deceased is survived by her husband; two children, Mrs. Leslie Murry and Sidney Turk; two step-children, W. H. Coulthard of Columbus, OH and Mrs. Robert M. Wylder of Morrison, IL., five grandchildren and ten great grand children.
COULTHARD. Died 1921. William H. Coulthard died at home of son, Harlan, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Body brought to Jerseyville. Funeral from his late residence on West Exchange St. Rev. Joseph Jenkins. He was native of Ohio. Born 1842. Was son of John and Susan Hardesty Coulthard. Mother died when he was two. Father remarried and moved from Ohio to Kentucky. In the latter state he lived until the close of the Civil War in 1865. During the war he served for 14 months with the 14th cavalry and was several times taken prisoner by guerilla bands. In 1865 he returned to Ohio where he lived for 4 years following the life of a farmer. In 1869 moved to Greene Co., Ill. Where he loved until 1874 when he moved to Jerseyville and took charge of an elevator. From that time until his retirement a few years ago from active business in Jer. and for a time operated a plant at McClusky. In 1864 he married Elizabeth M. Terry, a native of Kentucky. Three children: Ida L., Eva A., Harlan P. Two grandchildren, Mrs. Robert Wylder of Jer. and Wm. Coulthard of Oklahoma City.
COUNTS. Died 04-05-1986. Luther D. Counts, 73, of Fieldon, died May 4 at St. Luke’s Hospital West in St. Louis County. He was born Aug. 10, 1912 in Geonia, Mo. to the late Cleve and Lula Barton Counts. He was a welder for 24 years at Duncan Foundry, retiring in 1975. He married Lorene Dilks on April 19, 1937, in Steelville, Mo. Survivors include his wife, Lorene of Fieldon; sons Bob and Charles, both of California, Larry, Bill and Fred, all of Jerseyville; and Gary of Fort Madison, Iowa; daughters Joyce Martin of Mulberry Grove, Wanda Counts of Alton, Linda Counts of Fieldon and Mary Warner of Carrollton; 23 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter. Visitation was May 6 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville; the funeral was May 7 there with the Rev. jean Erb officiating. Burial was in the Fieldon Cemetery.
COUSINS. Died 29-02-1988. Pearl Cousins, 95, died at 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 29, 1988, at Jersey Care Center in Jerseyville, following a lengthy illness. Born in Alton, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Bartlow) Cousins. Nieces and nephews survive. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Sudeheimer, Ida Craig, Agnes Bierbaum and Ruth VonBergen; and a brother, John Cousins. Private services will be conducted at Elias-Smith Funeral Home in Alton. Burial will be in Upper Alton Cemetery.
COWELL. Died 25-11-1950. Funeral services were held at Welti Funeral Parlors in Santa Rosa, California, on Monday afternoon, November 27, at two o’clock for Mrs. Arthur Cowell, nee Elsie Bassett, who died at the Santa Rosa General Hospital on November 25 after several months illness. Reverend Juluis Hanson officiated and committal followed at the Chapel of the Chimes. Mrs. Cowell was born in Jerseyville and at the rime of her death was fifty-seven years old. She was graduated from the Jerseyville High School with the class of 1911. In 1913 she went to Montana where she proved up a homestead and in 1920 she and her husband moved to Santa Rosa, California to make their home. Besides her husband Mrs. Cowell is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Patricia Keeler of Richmond, California, a son, Eugene C. Cowell of San Francisco, and two sisters Mrs. Maud Harris and Miss Ann Bassett of Turner, Montana.

COWEN. Died in Scraton, Kan. George Cowen. Dec. 18. 1904 former resident of Jerseyville. 71 years. Burial from home in four miles south of Scraton. Highland Cemetery. Born in Jerseyville, Ill. October 7, 1833. Served in Union Army for 3 years. After coming our of service on Dec. 4 1866 married Sarah Palmer of Carlinville, Ill. Six children: five survive: John, Orville, henry, Ida and Eva. COWEN. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church in Jerseyville at two o’clock Satruday afternoon for Miss Myrtle Cowen, one of the older residents of the county. Reverend W. Louis Purcell officiated and burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation hours were held at th Gubser Funeral home. The death of Miss Cowen, who resided northwest of Jerseyville, occurred at five-fifteen o’clock Thursday afternoon at the Jersey Community Hospital where she had been a patient for several days. Miss Cowen, a daughter of the late Francis and Mary Landon Cowen, was a lifelong resident of Jersey County. Her age at the time of death was ninety-one years, seven months, and eight days. She is survived by two nephews, Morris Waggoner of Jerseyville, and Theodore Richards of New Jersey, and five nieces, Marian Waggoner of Lebanon, Mrs. Mabel Sayre of California, Mrs. Beatrice Jones of Colorado, Mrs. Alma Search of Chicago, and Mrs. Bernice MacReady of Knox, Tennessee.
COWEN. Died in Loncol, Tuesday, Oct. 13, Mrs. George W. Cowen. She has been a great sufferer for many years but for two or three months has been very low, there being no hope of her recovery. She has been most tenderly cared for in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Leroge E. Henry, with whom she has resided for several years. All was done for her comfort that wealth could provide or love devise or the untiring ministrations of a devoted husband and a loving daughter could lavish upon her. Mrs. Sarah Calhoun Cowen was the daughter of James and Philena Robbins Calhoun and was born in Lyman, Feb.10, 1834. She was the second in a family of seven children. Mrs. Cowen began teaching at the early age of 15 years, in which vocation she met with rare success both as instructor and disciplinarian. Sept. 9, 1863, she was united in marriage with George W. Cowen. One child was born to them, Bertha Sarah Cowen, now Mrs. George E. Henry of Lincoln. Mrs. Cowen was a woman of sterling character and rare ability. She was a member of the Methodist church in Littleton where the funeral services were held Thursday at eleven o’clock. Rev. W. F. Ineson officiating assisted by Rev. Mr. Getchell, pastor of the North Woodstock church. If flowers are love’s truest language, how many loved the dear one gone, as the display was very beautiful. She leaves beside the husband and daughter, four sisters, Mrs. Dwight Parlker of Lisbon, Mrs. Willliam Blake Littleton, Mrs. Clementine Ash and Mary Young of Berkley, Cal., and friends to mourn their loss. Interment was in Glenwood Cemetery.
COX. Clifton Ray Cox, 78, died at 4:15 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 1991, at Jersey Community Hospital, Jerseyville. He retired in 1964 as a buffing machine operator froM International Shoe Co. in Hartford, after 35 years of service, and later retired in May 1976 from Pere Marquette Youth Cemetery near Grafton after 11 years of service. He was a U. S. Army World War II veteran. Born on Feb. 6, 1913, in Star Lime Works, KY, he was the son of the late Thurman Cox and Charlotte (Higgins) Cox Fulks. He married the former Anna Lea Strebel on April 11, 1943, in Jerseyville, and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Carole Ealey of Godfrey and Patricia Day of Cumming, Ga.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Louis Watkins of East Alton and Lorene Fulks of Smithland, Ky.; two step-sisters, Arlene Moore and Gradie Barrish, both of East Alton; and two step brothers, Calude Fulks of Godfrey and Ira Fulks of Marion, Ky. Preceding him in death were his stepfather, Amos Fulks; two brothers, Coy Cox and an infant brother; and a sister, Pauline West. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Jacoby-Schroeder Funeral home in Jerseyville, where services are at 10 a.m. Monday. The Rev. James Pepper will officiate. Military graveside rites will be conducted at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville by American Legion Post 4925 and VFW Post 4528, both of Jerseyville. COX. Died 09-05-1968. Clyde Cox, 72 year old retired farmer, died Thursday evening, May 9, at six o’clock at his home on Route 267 south of Jerseyville. Mr. Cox, a resident here for the past twenty-six years, had been in ill health and recently had been hospitalized. Rev. Carlton Christenson, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiated at the final rites held Sunday afternoon at tow o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation hours were held at the Funeral Home. Mr. Cox was a son of the late William D. and Caroline Cornwell Cox, and was born October 5, 1895, at Neoga. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Hazel Bales Cox, one son, Russell M. Cox, and one daughter, Miss Betty Cox, all of Jerseyville, and one sister, Mrs. Alex (Bertha) South of Neoga.

He is survived by his wife, the former Virginia Scoggins whom he married July 3, 1948 in Metropolis; one daughter, Catherine Canausdoll of Petersburg; a brother, Clifton Cox of Jerseyville; three sisters, Lorene Fulks of Smithland, Ky., Pauline West of Benton Ky., and Lois Watkins of East Alton.

Her death occurred at 7:40p.m. July 6 in the Elder Care Nursing Home in Alton. A native of Jerseyville, she was the daughter of the late William and Irene Coates Antrobus. Her husband, William Cox, died in 1969. Her survivors include three brothers, Harry Antrobus of Alton, Louis Antrobus of Wood River and Raymond Antrobus of Bryan, Tex.; and two sisters, Eunice Ressler of Alton and Lucy Clauson of Overlans, Mo. COX. Capt. George W. Cox, 71 years, died at home in Denver Colo. Born in Jersey Co. and came to Virden in 1850. Enlisted in Co. G. 122nd Ill. volunteers served to end of war. Finishing as adjutant of his regiment. Married May Cheney in 1866 and in grocery business for many years. In 1882 appointed postmaster in Virden. His wife died soon after moving to Denver. Married again – present wife survives and one brother, J. J. Cox of Springfield. Burial in Riverside cemetery in Denver. State Journal.
COX. Died -09-1982. Hazel N. Cox, 87, of Route 1, died at 4:43 p.m. Monday at Jersey Community Hospital. Born in Coles County, daughter of the late Alfred and Sarah Ann (Martin) Bales, she married James Clyde Cox on Oct. 4, 1914, in Charleston. He died in May 1968. Surviving are a son, Russell of Jerseyville; a daughter, Betty J. Cox, also of Jerseyville; and three sisters, Lula Gruver of Jerseyville, Grace Jenkins of Mexico City, Mexico, and Mabel Honn of Charlottesville, Va. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Gubser Funeral Home, where an Eastern Star service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. by Jerseyville Lodge 656. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. R. E. George officiating, and burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. The First United Methodist Church, of which she was a member, has been named as a memorial.

COX. Died 07-04-1951. John Wesley Cox, 84 year old retired ferryman, died at his home, 726 East Spruce Street, Saturday afternoon, April 7, at two forty-five o’clock. He had been a resident of Jerseyville the past seven years. The decedent was a son of the late Jefferson and Eliza Anderson Cox and was born April 2, 1867 at Cooper Hill, Missouri. He was employed as a ferryman at St. Genevieve, Missouri. Surviving Mr. Cox are his wife, Mrs. Mary Ellen Cox of Jerseyville, one daughter, Mrs. Pearl Hood of Philadelphia, Pa., two grandsons, five great grandchildren and one brother, Thomas Cox of Linn, Missouri. Friends called at his home here until Monday morning when the body was taken by Jacoby Brothers to the Oklahoma Christian Church in Linn, Missouri, where services were held Monday afternoon at one-thirty o’clock. Reverend F. W. Schwarzlose, pastor of the First Methodist Church in Jerseyville, officiated at the services and burial was in Oklahoma Cemetery at Linn.
COX. Died 02-05-1984. Memorial services were held at Inglewood Park-Chapel of the Chimes on May 8 for Kathleen Bligh Cox, 65, of Orange, Calif., formerly of Jerseyville. Dr. Andrew Straley officiated. She died on May 2 at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, Calif. following a massive stroke. She was born in Jersey County April 29, 1919, daughter of the late Maggie Nelson and Preston Bligh. Her survivors include three sons, Alfred and Roger Linenfelser of Jerseyville, Don Cox of Orange, Calif., one daughter, Donna Herrin of Fullerton, Calif., one brother, Donald Bligh of Jerseyville; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. After cremation the ashes were placed at Inglewood Park Cemetery.
COX. Died 30-10-1973. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow (Friday) at Gent Chapel in Alton for Mrs. Mary E. Cox, 79, of 1330 State St., Alton, whose death occurred at 11:50 p.m. on Oct. 30 at D’Adrian Nursing Home, Godfrey. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Park. She was born Oct. 25, 1894 in Bell, Mo., the daughter of the late William and Lucy Durbin Cox. Her husband was the late John Wesley Cox. Mrs. Cox was a member of the Methodist Church and Order of Eastern Star, Granite City. She is survived by a brother, Brice Durbin of Columbus, Ka.; and two sisters, Mrs. Elbert Zeller of Godfrey and Mrs. Edna McDall of Highland. Visitation hours will be held at Gent Chapel this evening (Thursday) beginning at 7:00.
COX. Myrtle I. Cox, 84, died at 9:35 p.m. Monday, June 15, 1992 at Jersey Care Center in Jerseyville. Born on Aug. 17, 1907, in Ridgeway, she was the daughter of the late Theo and Daisy (Barandon) Sauls. On Aug. 28, 1926, in East Alton, she married John W. Cox. Surviving are her husband; a son, Harold E. Cox of Hardin; nine grandchildren; and four brothers, Brice E. Sauls of Davenport Iowa, Theo Sauld Jr. of Sun City, Ariz., and Don Suals of Chief Land, Fla. She was preceded in death by two sons, WIlliam and Robert Cox; three brothers and three sisters. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are at 11 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Simon A. Simon will officiate. Burial is in Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice or the Arthritis Foundation.
COX. Died 21-07-1982. Services for Robert E. Cox, 49, of 409 Minard, Jerseyville were conducted Friday morning at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home by the Rev. John Wilson with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. His death occurred at 8:12 a.m. July 21 at Christian Hospital Northeast, St. Louis. He was born in Wood River Township, Oct. 31, 1932,a son of John W. and Myrtle Sauls Cox and was an inspector at Owens-Illinois Glass Co. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict. His survivors are his wife, the former Helen Haushalter whom he married March 22,1952 at Peoria; one son, Johnnie Cox of Jerseyville; three daughters, Beverly Cox of Jerseyville, Tina and Teresa, both at home; two grandchildren; parents; and one brother, Harold Cox of Alton. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister. The American Cancer Society is the memorial.
COX. Died 22-04-1954. Spencer Cox, 80, father of John W. Cox of Jerseyville and Mrs. Beatrice of Jerseyville and Mrs. Beatrice V. Davis of Dow, died Thursday April 22, at the Mather Home for the Aged in Alton where he had been for the past three years. Mr. Cox, a native of Posey County, Indiana, had resided nearly all of his life in Saline County. Surviving him in addition to his son and daughter residing in Jersey County are his widow, Mrs. Elvira Cox of Rawleigh, another son, letuc Harold of Hartford, one brothers and one sister. He also leaves ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Funeral rites were hld Saturday morning, April 24, at the Streeper Home in Alton and the body was taken to Omaha, Illinois, for burial in Palestine Cemetery.
COX. Died 24-10-1982. Stanley Edward Cox, 32, 1117 W. Grand, Chicago, formerly of this area, was shot to death Sunday evening, Oct. 24 while he and a friend were standing outside a Chicago bar. He was pronounced dead at Illinois Masonic Hospital. According to a police report the two men were smoking when a man approached them and fired a handgun at them from about five feet away. The other man was reported in fair condition. Cox was born Jan. 15, 1950 in Carrollton, the son of Harold Edward and Eileen Weller Cox. He had worked for American Telephone and Telegraph for 10 years. In addition to his parents he is survived by one brother, Michael, of Alton; paternal grandparents, John and Myrtle Cox of Jerseyville; maternal grandmother, Eva Retherford, and step-grandfather, Jim Retherford of Jerseyville. Services were conducted Oct. 28 at Gubser Funeral Home by the Rev. todd Taylor. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. The First Southern Baptist Church of Alton has been designated as a memorial. A coroner’s investigation is pending.
COX. Died 10-03-1978. Private services were held today, March 13, at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home for William Junior Cox, 48 of 220 Sherman St., Jerseyville with burial in Valhalla Memorial Park. The Rev. Everett Chambers and the Rev. R. E. George officiated. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Jersey Community Hospital at 3:10 p.m. March 10. He was born July 12, 1929 in Madison County, a son of John W. and Myrtle Sauls Cox. He was employed at the Brass Mill and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. His survivors are his wife, the former Norma Jean Kline whom he married Oct. 21, 1950 at Pocahontas, Ark., three sons, William Jr. of Jerseyville, Darrell of Springfield, Mo., and Steven of Hamilton; three grandchildren; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John W. Cox of Jerseyville, and two brothers, Harold E. Cox of Alton and Robert Cox of Jerseyville. Graveside rites were conducted by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family has designated the Heart Fund as a memorial.
COX. Funeral Rites Held Sunday For Wm. Cox. Funeral rites for William F. Cox were held Sunday afternoon at one-thirty o’clock at the Kane Baptist Church with Rev. D. B. Shaw of Carrollton and Rev. Wm. Sealock of Kane officiating. Burial was in the Kane cemetery. Mr. Cox died Thurday, May 13, at 7 o’clock a.m., at his home north of Kane. He was born March 1, 1893, and his age at the time of death was sixty-nine years, one month and twelve days. Surviving the decedent are his wife, Mrs. Maude White Cox; six sons, Courtland and Herschel of Jerseyville, William of Versailles, Kentucky, Dan, Beverly, and Lowell at home; six daughters, Mrs. Henry Miller of Joliet, Mrs. Audrey Platto, Mrs. Frances Akers[?], Mrs. Eula[?] McKinnon and Mrs. Clyde Ruyle of Jerseyville, and Linda, at home; his mother, Mrs. Delilah Painter Cox of Carrollton; one sister, Mrs. Arthur Ruyle of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three brothers, Othel Cox of Colorado Springs, Colo., Paul Cox of White Hall, and Walter Cox of Hillview, and twenty two grandchildren.
