Mr. McAdams was in the war of 1812 and was taken prisoner at Detroit. He followed farming through life and died in 1833. His wife died in the spring of 1836. William McAdams was educated at the public schools of his native county and was married in Nov. 1831 to Eliza, oldest child of Joseph and Nancy Faries, whose ancestral descent was Scotch and Irish, and who were among the early settlers of Ohio. The result of this union was nine children, six of whom are living: William of Alton, Mary Jane, Wife of John Auten, Dr. Charles of Witicha, Lewis Y. of White Hall, Eleanora and Anna residing at home. McADAMS. Died – At his residence near Otterville, Thursday, July 23, 1885, William McADAMS, Sr., aged 76 years. Decedent was born in Middletown, Butler county, Ohio, April 25, 1809, and was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth McADAMS. Thomas McAdams was a native of Scotland, and when sixteen years years of age he emigrated to this country, and settled in Philadelphia. He was married, in 1798, to Miss Elizabeth, dughter of James and Rebecca NOBLE, who were natives of Pennsylvania. As a result of this union, they had a family of eight children, four sons and four daughters. Mr. McAdams was engaged in the war of 1812 as volunteer, and was taken prisoner at Detroit. He followed farming through life, and died in December, 1833. His wife died in the spring of 1836. William McAdams, the subject of this sketch, was educated in the common schools of his native country, and on the 6th of November, 1831, he was married to Miss Eliza, oldest child of Joseph and Nancy FARIES, whose ancestral descent was Scotch and Irish, and who were among the early settlers of Ohio. The result of this union has been a family of nine children, four sons and five daughters, six of whom are still living, viz.: William, Jr.; Alton; Mary Jane, wife of John AUTEN, Alton; Dr. Charles, Wichita, Kansas; Lewis Y., Whitehall; Elenora and Anna, resideing at home. Mr. McAdams began life as a carpenter, but soon changed to mercantile business, which he followed about twenty years, or until 1850, when he engaged in agricultural pursuits which he followed until his sad and sudden death. He emigrated to Illinois, and settled one mile south-west of this city, in the fall of 1857, where he remained until the spring of 1864, when he removed to his farm near Otterville. Here he resided until the spring of 1872, when he rented his farm and moved to the village of Otterville, where he has ever since resided. The news of his death was received in this city Thursday with sadness and many were the expressionsd of sorrow heard from numerous frinds who had known and esteemed him for many years. He died very suddenly, his trouble being heart disease, and but a day or two before he was pleasantly greeting acquaintances in this city. The high social and financial position he enjoyed was attributable to his untiring energy and good management. He was one whose acquaintance was so extensive and whose merits are so well known, that any eulogy from us is unnecessary. It is enough to say that he was respected by the entire community as an upright, honorable, and public-spirited citizen. His funeral took place from the Baptist church of Ottrville, Saturday, July 25th, Dr. Bulkley (?) of Alton, officiating. From Jersey County Democrat, July 30, 1885.

McCLURE. Died, at the residence of his parents in this city, Sunday, 26 Oct 1889, at 6:45 p.m., James F. McClure, aged 21 years, 1 month and 14 days. Tuesday afternoon at the M. E. church the last sad rites were paid to the memory of our young friend, James F. Mcclure. The services were conducted by Rev. F. M. Van Treese, it being during his pastorate in our city that James was converted and united with the church. Rev. Van Treese was assisted by the pastor, Rev. John Leeper and the Presiding Elder, Rev. J. A. Scarritt of Alton. A more effective or impressive service would have been impossible, and the large, attentive body of sympathizing relatives and friends were as far a mortal man could be, consoled for their loss. A very pretty feature was the assembling of the high school alumni, of which James was a member, and attending the services in a body, then marching to the cemetery. It is with much sadness that we are called upon to record the death of so model a young man as James McClure. Just passed the year of his manhood, with the brightest of prospects before him, it seems very hard to think that he should be taken from our midst. James was a boy with many friends, you had but to know him to love him. He graduated from our high school with high honors and beloved by classmates and teachers. Being offered a good position in Deighton, Kansas, he accepted it and was doing well, but his health failing him, he came home last spring with consumption marked on his brow. He lingered along all summer never seeming discouraged, but always looking upon the bright side. Everything that could be done for him was done, but he gradually sank away becoming weaker every day until at last he was gone. He leaves a devoted father and mother, a loving sister, and very many affectionate relatives and friends. To them, one and all, the “call” extends its hand in sympathy for we knew James and know how hard it must be to give him up. Additional obituary, Jersey County Democrat, 7 Nov. 1889: James F. McClure, born in Jerseyville on 13 Sep. 1868, died on 27 Oct 1889. Services were held from M. E. church on 29 Oct with Rev. T. M. Vantreese. Pallbearers were : George Pennington, Frank Osborn, Ralph Vandenburg, Edward Vaughn, Alec Robb, Porter Evans, Harry Cockrell and David Houghtlin. Published, Oct 1889.
