MEADER. Died 00-05-1887. From Jersey County Democrat, May 14, 1887. Mrs. Thomas M. Meader, formerly Miss Julia Bell, died in Chicago. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Bell. Brothers: C. F. Bell and J. P. Bell, Jr. Sister, Miss Ada.
MEANS. Died 05-25-1985. Joseph S. Means, 76, of Route 1, died 5:12 am today at St. Joseph’s hospital. He was a retired master river boat pilot for Standard Oil with 25 years of service. He was born in Eugene, Oregon, son of the late Arthur and Mary Means. He married the former Norma Shadden in 1934 in Keokuk, Iowa. In addition to his wife, surviving is a Sister, Alice Arden of Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Monday at Gent Funeral Home where services will be conducted at 1 pm Tuesday with the Rev. H. Todd Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens.
MEANS. Died 02-11-1951. Mrs. Verna Davis Means of Alton, daughter of Harry Davis of Dow, died at eight-thirty o’clock Friday evening, November 2, at the Mount St. Rose Sanatorium in St. Louis where she had been a patient for the past two years. The deceased was one of nine children born to Mrs. Davis and the late Mrs. Davis. She was born in Jersey County, February 4, 1925, and her age at death was twenty-six years. Mrs. Means is survived by her husband, Louren T. Means, Jr. of Alton; her father; four brothers, Corporal Paul Davis who is stationed in Tokyo, Japan; Laverne, Herbert and Eugene, all of Dow; four sisters, Mrs. Harry McCoy, Elizabeth and Bette Davis of Dow; and Mrs. Joseph Lockard of Alton; six nephews and two nieces. Funeral services were held at the Alton gospel tabernacle at two-thirty o’clock Monday afternoon (rest of obit missing).
MEARS. Died 24-01-1886. From Republican Examiner January 29, 1886. Died January 24, 1886, Daisy Mears, oldest child of Rector and Elle Mears, 3 years old. Funeral held at home on Tuesday. Rev. J. L. Wylder of Grafton. Buried in Grafton cemetery. (entered under Shiloh news)
MEARS. Died 00-07-1918. From Jersey County Democrat, July 25, 1918. Mrs. Ella Mears, wife of Rector Mears of Grafton, died at her home. 62 years of age. Funeral from ME church at Grafton. Rev. Thero of Madison. Formerly of Grafton.
MEARS. Died 30-05-1950. Mrs. Harriet E. Mears, wife of George R. Mears of Greenfield, died at her home Tuesday afternoon, May 30, at one forty-five o’clock following a period of ill health. Mrs. Mears was a daughter of the Late Willis and Clara Shafer Pittenger, and was born in Jersey County, April 23, 1884. Her age at the time of death was sixty-six years, one month and seven days. The deceased is survived by her husband; two Sons, Clarence Mears of St. Louis and Raymond Mears of Greenfield; two daughters, Mrs. Camille Baumgardner of Freeport, and Mrs. Helyn Howard of Sylvania, Ohio; six grandchildren; one brother, Earl Pittenger of Grafton, and one sister, Mrs. Mabel Journey of Carrollton. The body was taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Overmeyer in Grafton where friends called from four o’clock Thursday afternoon until eleven o’clock Friday morning. At that time the body will be moved to the Methodist church in Greenfield where funeral services will be held this afternoon (Friday) at one-thirty o/clock. Rev. George Mayor of Greenfield will officiate and interment will be in the Scenic Hill cemetery at Grafton.
MEARS. Died 05-04-1891. Jersey County Democrat, April 28, 1891: Grafton – Mrs. Mears, widow of W. R. Mears, died on April 5th. Mr. Mears died about 4 years ago. They came to this area about 30 years ago and opened up a large farm about 9 miles from town, where they lived ever since. Mrs. Mears, as well as her husband, was a devoted Christian and they raised a very estimable family.
MEARS. Died 03-06-1886. From Republican Examiner March 19, 1886. Shiloh: Died March 6,1886, W. R. Mears at his home near Grafton. Born in St. Clair County, Illinois, February 9, 1820. To Jersey County in 1859. Entered large tract of land in head of Mason’s Hollow. Stricken with paralysis in 1876. Leaves wife and two children. Funeral from home. Rev. R. M. Smith of Elsah. Buried in Grafton IOOF cemetery.
MEDFORD. Died 00-00-1972. Funeral services for Mrs. Anna May Medford of Fieldon were held at one-thirty o/clock Sunday at the Jacoby Brothers Funeral home. Rev. Leonard Todd of Moro officiated and burial was in the Gunterman cemetery. The death of Mrs. Medford, widow of Beman Medford, occurred at two forty-five pm Thursday at Greenlawn Nursing Home just thirteen days after her eighty first birthday anniversary. Mrs. Medford, a lifelong resident of Jersey County, was a daughter of the late John and Rose Weeks Cooper. Her survivors are one sister, Bertha Cooper of Fieldon, one brother, Robert Cooper of Jerseyville, and nieces and nephews.
MEDFORD. Died 09-07-1891. From Jerseyville Republican, August 14, 1891. Died at home 5 miles northwest of Fieldon on July 9. Mr. Arthur Medford, son of Mason and Rosamond Medford. Born July 11, 1870. Esteemed by all who knew him. Died of typhoid fever. At his request he was buried in Gunterman cemetery. Funeral services by Rev. J. Wilson of Calhoun County Leaves mother, sister, two brothers.
MEDFORD. Died 15-06-1983. George L. Medford, 48, Straub Lane, Godfrey, died unexpectedly at 1:21 am June 15 at St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton. He was born September 3, 1934 in Fieldon to the late Harold Medford and his mother, Hazel Healey who survives. He was employed in maintenance by the Alton school district and was a member of the Jerseyville Moose Lodge. His survivors are his wife, the former Marilyn Cunningham whom he married on June 29, 1952 in Jerseyville; three sons, Eldon of Godfrey, Brian and Alan, at home; stepson, Michael Cunningham of Jerseyville; daughters, Donna Brums and Marilyn Medlock of Alton, Barbara File, Edwardsville and Diane Herring, Stone Mountain, Georgia; and a sister, Helen Bick of Jerseyville; nine grandchildren. Services were conducted Saturday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home by Rev. Joy Settles and burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey. The heart fund has been named as a memorial.
MEDFORD. Died 14-05-1982. Democrat News, May 18, 1982: Herschel Lee Medford, 83, of Fieldon died may 14 at Jersey hospital. Funeral from Gubser home. Rev. Robert Broeder. Burial Guntermann cemetery Near Fieldon. Owned and operated service station and farmed. Born September 25, 1898 near Fieldon, son of Roy and Mary Schaaf Medford. Leaves wife, former Lida Morrison, whom he married October 6, 1921 in Jerseyville. One Daughter, Doris Spangle of Tucson, Arizona, seven grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
MEDFORD. Died 25-01-1950. Otis D. Medford, a native of Jerseyville, died Wednesday morning, January 25, at the Decatur and Macon County hospital. Funeral services were held Friday at the Schahl Funeral Home in Mt. Pulaski with Rev. R. O. Zumstein officiating. Interment was in the mt. Pulaski cemetery. The deceased was born in Jerseyville, June 11, 1884, and at the time of his death he was sixty-five years of age. His home was in Mt. Pulaski where he was a member of St. John’s Lutheran church and the Modern Woodmen Lodge. Mr. Medford is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mattie Klotz; two sisters, Mrs. Thirza Edwards of Alton and Mrs. George Hall of Jerseyville, and one brother, Arthur Medford of Wood River. The latter attended the funeral.
MEDFORD. Died 12-05-1917. From Jerseyville Republican, may, 1917–Mrs. Rosamond Medford born September 13, 1836 in Washington County, Ohio died at home in Fieldon, May 12, 1917. 80 years. When 8 years came to Jersey County with her parents. Married to Mason Medford August 31, 1854. Nine children, four of whom are living. Two Daughters; Mrs. J. A. Heron of Carrollton and Mrs. H. C. Dunham of Jersey and two sons; George C. and Leroy of Fieldon. Husband died March 15, 1884. Belonged to Church of Christ. Leaves one Brother, S. B. Nott, of Jerseyville, two sisters; Dr. Z. A. Nevious of Wichita, Kansas and Mrs. Mary Harding of Minnock, Illinois. Seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren. Funeral from Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Fieldon, Illinois. Elder J. T. Roady of Kane. Buried Gunterman cemetery.
MEEKS. Died 00-05-1971. Funeral services were held at the Healing Waters Temple in Jerseyville at two o’clock Saturday afternoon for Alvin Everett Meeks whose death occurred Tuesday at the Carlinville area hospital. Rev. Dorcie Hill officiated and burial was in Hardin cemetery. Visitation was held at the C. C. Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin. Surviving Mr. Meeks are his wife, Mary Daisy Glowner Meeks; six daughters; Mrs. Agnes Thuer and Mrs. Albert Bick of Hardin, Miss Helen Meeks of Jerseyville, Mrs. Mary Hill of Batchtown, Mrs. Dorothy Dabbs of Alton, and Mrs. Sophronia Oldaker of Pennsylvania; two Sons, Jerry of Jerseyville and John of Long Lane, Missouri; eighteen grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; two Brothers; Irvin of Canton and Ernest of Jerseyville; and three Sisters; Misses Viola and Mabel Meeks and Mrs. Loretta Lewis, all of Alton.
MEEKS. Died 17-08-1979. Eldon Lynn Meeks, 20, of 814 Baxter, Jerseyville died August 17 after he apparently attempted to dive off the 150 ft cliff into the Blue Pool in Godfrey township. He landed on his stomach and did not surface. His body was recovered at 7:20 pm by the Alton volunteer emergency corps, a little over an hour after his attempted dive while swimming with friends. He was born September 19, 1958 in Alton and was a machinist at Olin Brass. Meeks was a Jersey Community High School graduate. He is survived by his mother, Helen Meeks of Jerseyville; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Dunse of Jerseyville, aunts, uncles and nephews. Services will be held at 2 pm Tuesday At the Assembly of God church with the Rev. Kenneth Schmidgall officiating. Burial will be – rest of obit missing.
MEEKS. Died 11-08-1986. Jerry R. Meeks, 59, of East Alton, formerly of Jerseyville, died at 4:25 am Monday, August 11, 1986, at Wood River township hospital, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Eldre, a son of the late Alvin Everette and May Daisy (Glowner) Meeks. He was employed for 30 years at Olin Corp. and retired in 1981. Surviving are a son, Joseph Meeks Blevins of Louisville, Kentucky; two grandchildren; six sisters, Agnes Thuer of Hardin, Helen Meeks of Jerseyville, Mary Hill of Batchtown, Sophronia Oldaker of West Grove, Pennsylvania, Albert Bick of Jerseyville and Dorothy Dabbs of Godfrey; and a brother, John Meeks of Long Lane, Missouri. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Wednesday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be conducted at 2 pm Thursday by Rev. James Pepper. Burial will be in Fieldon cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the American Diabetes Association.
MEHAGAN. Died 00-07-1918. From Jersey County Democrat, August 1, 1918. Mrs. Harriet V. D. Mehagan, daughter of Charles Van Dike of Jersey died at her home in St. Louis. Funeral in St. Louis. Visited Jerseyville often.
MEIER. Died 00-08-1909. From Jerseyville Republican, August 13, 1909. Peter Meier, 70, was found dead in a box car in which he lived on last Thursday morning. He had gone to home of John Longwell and got a bucket of water. This was the last time Meier was seen alive. Mrs. Longwell went to the Meier home to borrow a wash tub. She knocked on door and receiving no response, returned to her home. She sent a daughter to the Meier home with same result. Mrs. Longwell called Claude Cope, a neighbor and they went to Meier home and found him dead on floor. Funeral from German Evangelical Church. Rev. Hempel. A little iron box, found in the box car body, which had been the home of Meier, contained nearly $24,000 in money and securities. Box concealed under head of the bed and found at Atty. Geo. M. Seagi, R. B. Shortall, O. H. Richards. Contained $500 in currency and deeds of trust on St. Louis real estate for $10,000; $7,800; $3,000; and $2,100.
MEIER. William Meier, 42, of Grafton was drowned in the Mississippi river Wednesday when a skiff in which he was riding with other men overturned. The body was recovered about an hour afterward and taken to Grafton. The drowning occurred about a half a mile below the city of Grafton. Meier had gone out with friends for a little picnic party. They waited until the morning train on the Bluff Line brought up a keg of beer which was to constitute part of the refreshments. Loading the keg into a skiff they started down the river to a valley where they landed. To reach shore they had to work their way through a growth of willows along the bank. In going back home in the evening they had to work the skiff through the clump of willows to get out to the open water. In the willows the men overturned the boat and Meier went to the bottom and did not come up again. Ben Highfill tried to save his life but narrowly missed losing his own. He became caught in the mud and willows and was extricated by his three companions with great difficulty. When the body of Meier was recovered it was taken to Grafton and turned over to the undertaker there and the Jersey County coroner notified. Meier leaves his wife and five children. He was a cigar maker by trade. His mother, Mrs. Annie —ehl, lives in St. Louis. (Article torn. From Alton Telegraph undated clipping.)
MEISENHEIMER. Palmyra – Julius Meisenheimer, 96, died at 6 pm Tuesday, September 6, 1988 at Sunshine Manor in Carlinville. A retired farmer, he was born in Alton and served in the military during World War I. he married the former Nellie M. Braden October 9, 1924, in Alton, and she survives. Also surviving are three Sons, Paul Meisenheimer of Bunker Hill and Earl and Kenneth Meisenheimer, both of Hettick; nine grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, a grandson and a great-granddaughter. Visitation will be 6-8 pm today St. Stults-Neece Funeral Home in Palmyra, where services will be conducted 10 am Thursday by the Rev. Daymond Talkington. Burial will be in Hettick cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Northwestern Rescue Squad.
MEISNER. Died 00-09-1927. From Jersey County News, September 15, 1927. Anthony Meisner, well known resident of English township, died at his home there Monday evening at 10:20 o’clock at the age of 74 years and 24 days. Mr. Meisner was the son of Anthony and Nat Known Meisner and a native of Germany. Surviving him are one brother, Alex Meisner of Jerseyville, and two sisters, Mrs. Jospeh Sauer, and Mrs. Thalian, both of Raymond. Funeral services will be held from Jacoby Brothers funeral Chapel this morning (Thursday) at 10:00 o’clock, Rev. W. W. Wilke officiating. Interment will be in Armstrong cemetery.
MEISNER. Died 08-31-1970. Requiem mass for Henry Herman Meisner, 80 of Jerseyville, a retired farmer, was celebrated Wednesday morning at 9:30 o’clock at the Church of the Holy Ghost with Rev. Robert Heintz, celebrant. His death occurred Monday morning at Jersey Community hospital. Interment was in St. Francis Xavier cemetery. Born September 15, 1889 in Montgomery County, he was the son of Vincent and Catherine Beiermann Meisner. His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Ida Hoehn Meisner; one son, Charles Meisner of Jerseyvlle; two daughters, Mrs. Wiley (Mildred) Busker of Jerseyville and Mrs. Harry (Mary) Corlas of Aurora; thirteen grandchildren and one great granddaughter; and one brother, Leo Meisner of Raymond. His parents, one sister and one brother preceded him in death. Visitation was held after 4 pm Tuesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where the rosary was recited at 8:15 Tuesday.
MEISNER. Died 13-10-1988. Ida Lena Meisner, 95, died at 1:40 pm Thursday, October 13, 1988 at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville. Born in Montgomery County, her parents were the late Charles and Mary (Singler) Hoehn. She married Henry Herman Meisner September 5, 1917, in Nokomis. He died August 31, 1970. Surviving are a son, Charles Meisner of Jerseyville; two daughters: Mildred Busker of Godfrey and Mary Corles of Aurora; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Caroline Epley of Nokomis. Visitation will be 9-10 am Saturday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 am Saturday at Holy Ghost Catholic church in Jerseyville with the Rev. William Hembrow as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Francis cemetery at Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to masses or the church, where Mrs. Meisner had been a member more than 70 years.
MELCHER. Died 01-09-1985. Louis J. Melcher, 80, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, died September 1 in St. Nicholas hospital. He was born March 7, 1905, in Chicago to the late Charles and Antoinette Hudak Melcher. He married Ann Caslin on November 28, 1928 and she died in 1982. On June 15, 1985, he and Lila Flautt were married in Jerseyville. He is a retired employee of Illinois Bell Telephone Co. Survivors include his wife; son Robert Melcher, pastor of St. Clotilde Catholic church in Chicago, daughters; Muriel Ryan of Sheboygan, and Lois Bruns of Pullman, Michigan; one brother Edward of Fort Lauderdale; sisters Mrs. Marian Goggin of Ft. Lauderdale and Mrs. Raymond Dickenson of Springfield; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; one stepson; two step children. He was preceded in death by a brother, two sisters and two grandchildren. Visitation was at Donnellan Funeral Home in Chicago. A funeral mass was September 5 at St. Clotilde Catholic church in Chicago. Burial was in St. Mary cemetery in Evergreen Park, Illinois.
MELETTI. Died 00-01-1952. Funeral services for Mrs. Nellye Aldridge Meletti of Alton, formerly of Jerseyville, were held at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon, January 22, at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Services were conducted by Rev. Harold Hamilton of Alton and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs. Meletti who has resided in Alton for the past few years was fatally stricken Saturday morning. When she returned to her car on a parking lot in Alton after making a business trip to the Wedge Bank. An attendant at the parking lot noticed that she was ill and help was summoned but death occurred before medical help arrived. The deceased was a daughter of the late Edward and Emma Painter Aldridge and was born in Greene County, February 23, 1894. Her age at the time of death was fifty-seven years, ten months and twenty-six days. She is survived by her husband, Julius Meletti of Alton and one daughter, Mrs. George Keck of East Alton. A son, Corporal Harold Newberry of Plainview lost his life in action in Italy during World War II.
MELLOW. Died 17-04-1976. The funeral of Mrs. Daisy M. Mellow of 104 S. Lafayette Jerseyville, was held on April 20 at Jacoby Funeral Home with interment in Oakwood cemetery, Greenfield. The Rev. Everett Chambers officiated. Her death occurred at 6:30pm on April 17 at Jersey Community Hospital. She was born September 14, 1897 in Rosedale, a daughter of Ernest and Rosa E. Dabbs Wedding. Mrs. Mellow was a member of the First Baptist Church, Women’s Club and Order of Eastern Star. Surviving are her sister, Mrs. Ethel Weule of Jerseyville, a nephew, Edward Weule, and cousins. Her husband, Harry Mellow and her parents preceded her in death. The family has designated the building fund of the First Baptist church as a memorial.
MELLOW. Died 25-01-1973. Funeral rites for Harry Jesse Mellow, 75, of 208 Oak St., Jerseyville, were held Saturday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. Everett Chambers officiating. His death occurred at 2:30 am on January 25 at his home. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery, Greenfield. A retired pattern maker for the Lakey Corporation, he was born September 5, 1897 in Greenfield, a son of Jesse and Goldie McQuerrey Mellow. Mr. Mellow was a member of Masonic organizations in Muskegon, Michigan, and Scottish Rite and Saladin Shrine of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is survived by his wife, the former Daisy Wedding of Jerseyville. Visitation was held at Jacoby Funeral Home.
MELTON. Died 00-01-1884. Wyley J. Melton born in North Carolina, April 1, 1811, came to Illinois in 1830. In 1835 went to Tennessee and married Rebecca Richards. Six children: Mrs. W. Seago of Jerseyville, Isaac N. of Chester, Illinois; Thomas J. of Miama Co. Kansas; Mrs. Warren English of Carrollton, Illinois; David of Franklin County, Kansas; and John R. of Pueblo, Colorado. Mrs. Rebecca died November 14, 1848. Sep 8, 1853 he married Tobitha Grizzle. To them were born six children: five are Living, Mrs. P. D. Martin of Auburn, California, Mrs. W. H. Howard of Macoupin County, Frank of Franklin County, Kansas; Wm. C. of Allen, Texas; Charles W. of Macoupin County, Illinois. Tobitha died December 9, 1869. Wyley went to Kansas September 9, 1883 with his son, David. Funeral at Lane, Kansas.
MENZIE. Died 18-11-1959. Mrs. Jessie Menzie, wife Charles Menzie of Jerseyville and mother of seven children, the youngest of which is four months old, died at eleven thirty-five o’clock Wednesday night, November 18, at the Jersey Community Hospital where she had been a patient since Monday. Pneumonia was given as the cause of death. One of the children, two and one-half year old Debra Sue, is also a pneumonia patient at the hospital. She is recovering from the malady. Friends may call at the Gubser Funeral Home after seven o’clock this (Thursday) evening. Services will be held at the Funeral Home Saturday afternoon, November 21, at two o’clock. Rev. Earl Dickey pastor of the First Methodist church, will officiate and burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs. Menzie was born in Greene County, July 14, 1920 a daughter of the late Jesse and Nora Sullivan Ballard. Her age at the time of death was thirty-nine years, four months and four days. The decedent is a past president of the Eagles Auxiliary. Her survivors include her husband, four daughters, Mrs. Edward Boker, Sandra Kay and Debra Sue, of Jerseyville, and Mrs. Stanley Scoggins of Alton; three sons, Bruce Eugene Menzie, who resides at home; two grandchildren; and one half-brother, Anderson Long of Jerseyville.
MERCER. Died 00-07-1895. From Jerseyville Republican, July 18,1895. Thomas Mercer an old settler of Jersey County, living at Fidelity, died Saturday. 80 years. Seems to be little known about him. Single man. No relatives here. Once spoke of a son living in Minnesota.
MERCURIO. Died 30-09-1970. Requiem mass for Joseph Walter Mercurio, 76, of St. Louis was celebrated at 12:00 o’clock noon Saturday at St. Francis Xavier church with Father Francis Lee, celebrant. His death occurred in an Alton hospital September 30. He had been in ill health for five years and seriously ill for nine months. Interment was in St. Francis cemetery. He was born in Alton, February 10, 1894, a son of the late Mrs. and Mrs. Leo Mercurio. He spent his early childhood in Jerseyville where he attended the local schools. Mr. Mercurio was a salesman for forty years with Hunter Packing Company of St. Louis, retiring 11 years ago. His survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Cline of St. Louis and Miss Alice M. Mercurio of East Alton; two grandchildren, three great grandchildren; and a brother, Charles L. of Alton. He was preceded in death by a son, Leo Mercurio. Visitation hours were held at the Burke Funeral Home in Alton where the rosary was recited at 8 pm Friday.
MERCURIO. Died 02-03-1957. Leo Joseph Mercurio, forty three year old former resident of Jerseyville resident, died suddenly of a heart attack Saturday morning, March 2 at one-fifty o’clock at his home, 2521 West Herbert St., St. Louis. Mr. Mercurio had not felt too well last week and on Friday morning enroute to his work had consulted a physician but was able to report for work. He was in apparent good health upon retiring Friday evening and death came without a warning. The decedent was a son of Joseph Mercurio and Mrs. Gladys White Mercurio and was born in Jerseyville on August 22, 1913. His age at time of death was forty-three years, six months and ten days. He was educated in the Jerseyville schools. As a young man Mercurio held a position with Hunter Packing Company and he and his wife, the former Miss Helen Heiderscheid of Jerseyville, resided in Jacksonville. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and Knights of Columbus of Jacksonville. During World War II, Mr. Mercurio served with the army and saw duty in the European theatre. For a time he was a salesman for Schapleigh Hardward Company with headquarters in Baton Rouge, Louisana. In January 1954 Mr. Mercurio became affiliated with Brown and Bigelow Company with headquarters in St. Louis and the family resided there since early 1954. Surviving him in addition to his wife, Mrs. Helen Mercurio, is one son, Joseph Mercurio, his father, Joseph Mercurio, all of St. Louis; and two sisters, Miss Alice Mercurio and Mrs. Roy Cline, all of East Alton. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, March 5, at nine-thirty o’clock at St. Francis Xavier church. She and her husband were for many years in charge of a fruit store on State Street. Burial was in the Upper Alton cemetery. Mrs. Merkle, formerly of Chamberlain St., Alton, died at 8 am December 4 at Jersey Community Hospital where she had been a patient for a month. MERRILL. Died 13-07-1975. The funeral of Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Merrill, 71, of 418 E. Spruce St., Jerseyville was conducted from the Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Thurman Strange officiating. Her death occurred on July 13 at her residence. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. She was born December 25, 1903 in Batchtown a daughter of William and Flora Smith. She is survived by her husband, Thomas K. Merrill of Jerseyville; one son William A. Minor of Alton; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one stepson, Arthur Isringhausen of Jerseyville; a step daughter, Mrs. Helen Brakeville of Jerseyville; and a sister, Mrs. Charles (Mary) Lageman of Jerseyville. Ira Tyson serving. Adelia V. Sunderland born in Trenton, New Jersey March 17, 1815. Married Theodore Mershon October 15, 1839. Four children born to them; two survive. In 1864 come to Illinois with her husband. She was one of 12 children, 11 of whom have preceded her in death.

Married at Trenton to Adelia V. Sunderland. Four children. One died in New Jersey. In 1863 moved to Jersey County. Settled on a farm. Fond of reading. Kind and benevolent. Was deaf and this kept him from mingling with people. Leaves wife, three children. Funeral from family home. Rev. C. E. Taylor. Additional info on obit: Died at his late residence, two miles east of town, Sunday morning, April 4th, Mr. Theodore Mershon, aged 65 years, 5 months and 23 days. Mr. Mershon was born October 27th, 1814 at Trenton, New Jersey, and spent his youth and the greater part of his life there. October 15, 1839, he was married at Trenton, New Jersey to Miss Adelia V. Sunderland. Four children were the fruit of this union, of whom, one died in New Jersey and three survive. In 1863 he moved to Jersey County, Illinois and settled on the farm which has since been his home. Mr. Mershon was quiet, reserved man and his natural reserve was intensified by deafness with which he had been afflicted about 35 years. He was very fond of reading and his mind was well stored with useful information. He was kind and benevolent to all, a man of sterling uprightness and great moral worth, having the confidence and respect of all who knew him. His affliction (deafness) prevented his mingling very much in society, yet he enjoyed very greatly the society of his own family, to whom he was deeply attached, and by whom he was greatly beloved. For a number of weeks his health had been feeble, but he became very much worse on Tuesday of last week, and grew rapidly worse till Sunday morning when he passed away. He leaves to mourn his loss, and wait a little time ere the companionship of earth shall be renewed in another world, the wife who for over 40 years, has walked by his side, our aged mother and three children, besides a large circle of relatives and friends. The funeral service took place at the family residence. at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 6. The services were conducted by Rev. C. E. Taylor, who spoke from words recorded in the 2nd Cor. 5, 1, dwelling upon the thought that scripture asserts as a fact the resurrection of the dead and the re-union in a happier clime, of the redeemed of the lord. There was a very large attendance at the funeral, expressive both of the respect in which the departed was held and of the sympathy felt for the bereaved family.

Catharine Benager, born in Ohio September 20, 1830 and married Jacob Metzler in 1847.he died 10 years ago. Mrs. Metzler was one of the earliest settlers in the vicinity of Hartford and was known and respected by everyone. She had been blind for 20 years. Leaves one son and two daughters. His survivors are three sons, Maurice and Paul Meuth of Jerseyville and Cletus Meuth of Kane; one daughter, Anne Wagenblast, Jerseyville; 21 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, the former Marie Louise Kallal; one son, John Gregory, a daughter, Dorothy, one brother, Benjamin, and a sister, Bessie Schuckenbrock. MEUTH. A funeral mass for Paul F. Meuth, 203 Northmoor, Jerseyville was concelebrated Friday morning at the Holy Ghost church with father William Hembrow, pastor, and Msgr. P. O. Heinen as concelebrants. He died at 11:20 pm January 18 at Alton Memorial hospital where he had been a patient for five days for treatment of a broken hip suffered in a fall. Coroner’s inquest pending. He was born April 3, 1930 in Jerseyville, a son of the late John and Marie Kallal Meuth and was an insurance agent for Farmers Mutual of Iowa. Meuth was a veteran of the Korean war. He was a member of the Holy Ghost church and fourth degree Knights of Columbus. His survivors are his former wife, Margie Flamm Meuth; two sons, James Meuth of Carbondale and John Meuth of Jerseyville; three Daughters, Barbara Williams of Quincy, Karen Ryan of Bloomington and Patricia Meuth of Jerseyville; one Sister, Ann Wagenblast of Jerseyville; and two brothers, Maurice Meuth of Jerseyville and Cletus Meuth of Kane. His parents, a brother and a sister preceded him in death. A prayer service was read Thursday evening at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home followed by the fourth degree Knights of Columbus rites. Graveside rites were conducted by the American Legion Post No. 492 at St. Mary’s cemetery. The Holy Ghost school has been named as a memorial.
MEYER. Died 06-08-1975. Funeral mass for Anthony (Tony) Meyer, 71, a farmer of Rural Route 2, Jerseyville was celebrated on August 9 at St. Francis Xavier church in Jerseyville with the Rev. R. T. Shea celebrant. He was pronounced dead on arrival at 2 pm on August 6 at the Wood River township hospital following an accident on Vaughn Hill Road in Wood River. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery. He was born August 9, 1903 in Carrollton, a son of Herman and Margaret Vorholt Meyer and was a member of the Farm Bureau and Knights of Columbus. Meyer, his son and Daughter, Doris and Paul, had returned from a farm tour in Europe on August 4. His survivors are one son, Paul H. Meyer, at home; four daughters, Mrs. Franklin D. R. (Ann) Goza of Alton, Miss Ruth Meyer, Miss Dorothy Meyer, and Mrs. Rodney (Margie) Witt of Jerseyville; one grandchild, Jennifer; and a sister, Rose Meyer of St. Louis. Visitation was held at the Jacoby Funeral Home where the rosary was recited Friday evening.
MEYER. Died 06-12-1973. Final services were held for Mrs. Barbara Jean Meyer, 45, of 904 S. State St., Jerseyville on December 8 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home. Rev. M. Edwards Breed officiated at the rites with interment in Oak Grove cemetery. Her death occurred on December 6 at Jersey Community hospital. She was born April 28, 1928 in shelbyville, a daughter off Loyd and Maudie Richardson Waggoner. Mrs. Meyer was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary. She is survived by her Husband, Richard T. Meyer of Jerseyville; three sons; Rick, Gregg, and Brett Meyer, at home. Two daughters; Mrs. Bruce (Jody) Greer of Jerseyville and Miss April Meyer at home; her mother, Mrs. Floyd Waggoner of Shelbyville; and a sister, Mrs. Donald (Frances) Horn, Shelbyville. She was preceded in death by her father and one sister. Visitation was held at Jacoby Funeral Home. The family designated the Cancer Fund as a memorial.
MEYER. Died 12-11-1959. Mrs. Bertha Meyer of Alton, a native of Dow, died last Thursday at the Villa Terrace Nursing Home where she had been a patient for six months. Funeral services were held at the Gent Chapel in Alton Saturday by the Rev. William R. Kimbrough, pastor of the Elm Street Presbyterian Church, and burial was in the Upper Alton cemetery. Mrs. Meyer was born November 25, 1886, a daughter of the late Mrs. and Mrs. John Ward. Her marriage to Ivan L. Meyer took place in 1910. She was preceded in death by Mrs. And Meyer and an infant son. Surviving her are a daughter, a son , two brothers and a sister.
MEYER. Died 08-07-1982. Cheryl Marie Hunt Meyer, 18, of Route 1 Grafton died unexpectedly at 8:19 pm July 8 at St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton. She was born July 22, 1963 in Alton, a daughter of Charles and Mavis Cantrell Hunt. Her survivors are her husband, Brett Richard Meyer whom she married November 29, 1981 in Godfrey; five months old son, Joseph Richard Meyer; her parents, two brothers, Douglas and Blake Hunt of Grafton and maternal grandmother, Leola Dougherty Cantrell of Jerseyville. Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 pm Monday at Gubser Funeral Home where services will be conducted at 10:30 am Tuesday by the Rev. Randall Qualls of the Godfrey Baptist church. MEYER. Died 10-05-1971. Final rites for Mrs. Doris Marie Meyer, 32, of Rosewood Heights, were held Thursday morning, May 13, at 10:30 o’clock at Marks Mortuary in Wood River. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. The death of Mrs. Meyer, a registered nurse at Wood River township hospital for the past three years, occurred at 8:30 am may 10 at St. Anthony hospital in Alton where she had been a patient for two weeks. Mrs. Meyer was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Geisler of Dow and was born April 2, 1939 in Dow. She was graduated from Jersey Community High School with the class of 1957. Surviving her in addition to her parents are her husband, Matthew M. Meyer, to whom she was married December 29, 1960 at the Edwards Street Assembly of God church in Alton, two Daughters, Joyce, 9 and Janice, – rest of obit missing.
MEYER. Died 23-12-1990. Dorothy Meyer, 80, died at 2:20 am Sunday, December 23, 1990 at Jersey Community hospital in Jerseyville. Born in Henry County, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Gerhardt and Margaret (Vorwaldt) Moeller. She married Leo Meyer on November 25 in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. He died January 12, 1980. Nieces and nephews survive. A Sister, Della Freesmeier, preceded her in death. Visitation is from 4 to 9 pm Thursday at Jacoby-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jerseyville, with a rosary recitation at 7 pm. A funeral mass is at 11 am Friday at Holy Ghost Catholic church in Jerseyville with the Rev. William Hembrow as celebrant. Burial is in St. John’s cemetery in Carrollton. MEYER. Died 00-10-1973. Funeral services and burial for Sister Ernesita Meyer of the Sisters of Notre Dame were held October 16 at Villa Gesu, St. Louis. She was a sister of Tony Meyer of Jerseyville. Sister Ernesita, the former Lizzie Meyer, was born July 3, 1905, the daughter of Herman and Margaret Vorholt Meyer. She had entered the convent fifty-three years ago and had taught in Missouri and Iowa schools. In addition to her brother, Mr. Meyer, she is survived by a sister, Rose, of Ladue, Missouri. MEYER. Died 10-02-1971. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Meyer of this city attended funeral services Saturday morning for his brother, Joe Meyer, 58, of St. Louis who died February 10 at his home. He had been in ill health for some time. Mr. Meyer, a former Jerseyville resident, was a member of the Jerseyville Knights of Columbus and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in St. Louis. He was a World War II veteran. He is survived by his wife, the former Marie Schulte of Jerseyville, two sons, Robert and James of St. Louis; and his brother.

Funeral mass for Leo Meyer, 70, of 406 West Spruce St., Jerseyville, a retired farmer, was celebrated Monday morning at Holy Ghost church with father William Hembrow celebrant. Burial was in St. John’s cemetery Carrollton. He died unexpectedly at his residence at 6:30 am January 12. He was born April 29, 1909 in Carrollton, a son of William and Theresa Grone Meyer. He married Dorothy Moeller November 25, 1953 at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Meyer was a member of the Holy Ghost church, fourth degree Knights of Columbus, Eagles Lodge and Farm Bureau. He is survived by his wife and two nephews. His parents and two brothers preceded him in death. The rosary was recited Sunday evening at Jacoby Funeral Home followed by the fourth degree Knights service. The Holy Ghost building fund has been designated as the memorial.

MEYER. Died 11-10-1987. Troy L. Meyer, 70, died at 12:50 am Sunday, October 11, 1987 at his residence. Meyer was Superintendent of Schools in the Southwestern School District from 1956-73. He then served as Superintendent of Schools in Neponset, Illinois until his retirement in 1976. He was born in Hillview, son of the late Christopher and Myrtle (Collins) Meyer. A World War II Army veteran, he married the former Nancy Sue White on December 14, 1945, in East Alton. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Collin Meyer of Edwardsville; three grandchildren; a sister, Jewell Dyer of White Hall; and two brothers, Marvin Meyer of Hillview and Dean Meyer of Greenfield. Meyer was preceded in death by a daughter, Melena Sue; a son, Sgt. Val G. Meyer; and a brother. Visitation will be from 4 pm Tuesday until time of services at 8 pm Tuesday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. The Rev. Darrell Molen will officiate. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto at a later date. Memorials may be given to a charity of one’s choice.
MEYER. Died 09-11-1954. William Meyer, a farmer residing east of Jerseyville, died at his home Tuesday evening, November 9, at 9:50 o’clock following an extended period of ill health. The deceased was born in Wertle, Hanover, Germany, on April 22, 1871, a son of the Late Antone and Marie Holtman Meyer. His age at the time of death was eighty-three years, six months and seventeen days. Mr. Meyer was a trustee of the church of the Holy Ghost in Jerseyville and was a member of the Jerseyville Council, Knights of Columbus. The rosary will be recited at the Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home at eight o’clock this (Thursday) evening. The decedent is survived by his wife, Mrs. Theresa Groene Meyer; two sons, Leo Meyer of Jerseyville, and Joseph A. Meyer of St. Louis and two grandchildren. One son, Joseph, preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at the Streeper Funeral Home in Alton Sunday afternoon, August 19, at two o’clock for Mrs. Effie Lena Meyers, 72, of St. Louis, formerly of Grafton. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery at Grafton. Mrs. Meyers died Thursday, August 16 in St. Louis. She was born in Grafton on January 18, 1879, a daughter of the late William T. and Mary J. Wallace. She had made her home in St. Louis for three years prior to her death. Her husband, George Meyers, preceded her in death October21, 1948. The decedent is survived by two step-sons, Earl of Alton and Ray of Decatur; three Brothers, Edgar Wallace of Dorsey, Leslie Wallace of Bethalto, and Lawrence Wallace of St. Louis, and three sisters, Mrs. William Wadlow of Alton, Mrs. J. C. Freeman of Grafton and Mrs. Mary E. Campbell of St. Louis.

Having bloomed to womanhood, she married Louis Meyers on August 2, 1853, a happy union blessed with two daughters. Soothing death called her home January 9, 1915. 85 years. Baptist church. Rev. Stephen Catt. The earthly remains found their last resting place in Oak Grove cemetery. Leaves two daughters, 7 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren.
MEYERS. Newspaper source not noted, dated 1921? Mike Meyers dies of injuries sustained when hard road truck overturns. Michael Adams Meyers, died at 5:00 pm Thursday November 23 at St. Joseph’s hospital in Alton of injuries he sustained Wednesday morning when the hard road truck he was driving, overturned north of town, breaking his left leg, and causing gangrene to set in. Meyers was 38 years, 2 months, and 26 days old. He leaves a wife and one child. A coroner’s inquest was held in Alton, Friday morning. The verdict of the coroner’s jury was death resulted from gangrene in broken thigh of left leg. Deputy Coroner Streeper conducted the inquest at the C. J. Jacoby Undertaking Parlors, in Alton at 11 o’clock. The remains were brought to Jerseyville Friday afternoon and taken to the Jacoby Undertaking Parlors. Funeral services will be held at St. Elmo’s church, Kampsville, Illinois Monday November 27 at 11 o’clock am. High mass will be celebrated Rev. Father Douglas celebrant. The remains will lie in state at the Jacoby Brothers funeral Chapel, Sunday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.

MEYSENBURG. Captain Meysenburg of Grafton Dies Monday. Funeral Services To Be Held Thursday.
Captain Ernest Meysenburg, one of Graftons most prominent residents, died at his home there Monday evening, May 25th at eight oclock, following an illness of several weeks duration. At the time of his death, he had attained the advance age of 89 years, 3 months and 18 days.
The deceased was born in Rhine Province, Prussia, the son of F.W. and Johannah Schmitz Meysenburg. In 1855 he came to this country with his uncle, Theodore Kimm, who laid out a farm in Missouri in a section which later became known as Kimmswick, Mo. For a time, Mr. Meysenburg was engaged as a traveling salesman representing various St. Louis firms, but in 1860 he served as a private in Company E 2nd Missouri Cavalry, and for two years was first sergeant.
In 1867 the deceased located in Grafton establishing a general merchandising store, which he continued to operate under different partnerships for several years, disposing of the business to become cashier of the Grafton bank. He was connected with the latter institution for many years as president.
On October 7, 1869 Mr. Meysenburg was united in marriage with Mary H. Fichner of Grafton. To this union four daughters and one son were born, one of the daughters and the son, Robert Lee, a world war veteran, preceded the father in death. Besides his widow, Mrs. Mary Meysenburg, he is survived by three daughters, Mr. E.H. Easterly of Louisville, KY., Mrs. E.P. Plank of Chicago and Miss Edith who resides at home; also one sister and one brother.
Aside from his business associations Mr. Meysenburg has always been actively engaged in questions of interest to Grafton, and during his life has served as a member of the Board of Supervisors, school; trustee. and president of the Town Board.Funeral services will be held from the home Thursday, May 28th, at two oclock under the auspices of the I.O.O. F. Lodge, and interment will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Jersey County Democrat, May 28, 1931.
CAPT. MEYSENBURG, GRAFTON VETERAN OF CONFEDERACY, DIES. NOTED FIGURE OF RIVER CITY OPPOSED BROTHERS IN CIVIL WAR.
Capt. Ernest Meysenburg, 89, whose sympathy for the South was so strong that he joined the Confederate army despite the fact that his two brothers fought for the North, and who later sent his son to fight for the United States in the World War, is dead at his home in Grafton.
His death occurred at 8:00 oclock Monday evening after a period of failing strength which had kept him confined to his home the greater part of the past eight weeks.
Funeral services will be held from the home this afternoon at 2:00 oclock under the auspices of the Grafton I.O.O. F. Lodge. Interment will be in I.O.O.F. cemetery at Grafton.
He had been a resident of Grafton and a conspicuous figure there since that community under the bluffs had caught his fancy shortly after the Civil War when he happened to be passing through it as a substitute drummer for a St. Louis hat concern.
He was born near Essen, Germany and was the son of Frederick William Meysenburg.
He came to the United States at the age of 17, making his way immediately to Kimmswick, Mo., a small town near St. Louis named after his uncle, with whom he stayed until the war began.
During his stay in Missouri he developed a strong sympathy for the Southern cause, so that when war broke out, he joined the Second Missouri Cavalry under General Forrest. despite the fact that his father and two brothers, Gustave and T.A. Meysenburg, favored the northern cause.
He served during the entire war, then returned to his first American stopping place, St. Louis, for employment after the war was over. Taking a position as bookkeeper for the Hunike Hat Co., there, he was sent on the road temporarily to take the place of a salesman.
During that trip he passed through Grafton, took a fancy to it, and settled there, establishing first a mercantile business and later becoming owner of the Grafton Bank which evolved into the present Grafton State Bank under his guidance.
In his first business venture he went into partnership with Henry Eastman, establishing a mercantile company which was burned in the business block fire of September 16, 1912. In the meantime Eastman had died, but Capt. Meysenburg rebuild his store and continured in business until 1923.
Meanwhile he had established the Grafton Bank with William C. Allen as a partner. For many years he owned a controlling interest in this institution and when the state passed a law requiring private banks to become state institutions, he began his role as president, which lasted until only a few years ago.
In 1923 he retired from the mercantile business but retained his bank connections until failing strength forced him to give up even that activity.
Three daughters, Miss Edith of Grafton, Mrs. E. H Easterly of Louisville, Ky., and Mrs. E.N. Plank of Chicago survive. A son, Robert Lee, died four years ago. The son had served in the World War. Jersey County News, Thursday, May 28, 1931.
