GOANS. John William “Bill” Goans, 82, died July 21, at Jerseyville care center where he had been a patient for 10 days. Final services were held at Wood River Gospel Tabernacle with Rev Alfred Daves of Jerseyville officiating. Interment was in Mayfield Cemetery, Carlinville. The veteran of WWI, he was born in Jersey county on April 3, 1892 a son of the Late William & Browsi Goans. He farmed during his early life, later was a carpenter and painter, and had resided in Wood River for several years. Surviving are his Widow, Esther (Parker) Goans; 1 brother, Jake Goans of Jerseyville; 2 step sons, Rev Paul Parker of West Park, NY and Gerald a Parker of Chambled, GA; 4 step grandchildren. 2 brothers and 3 sisters preceded him in death. Visitation was at Warner funeral home, Brighton.


GODAR. Cecil Francis Godar, 57, of Jerseyville, died October 6, at Jersey County Memorial hospital. Born August 3, 1927, he was a son of Theresa (Becker) Godar of Hardin and the late Paul Godar. He was a mechanic for Riverway Shipyard and a member of State Street Baptist church services were held at the church with Rev Ron Woodrum officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Betty J (Coonrod) Godar whom he married November 21, 1959 in Fieldon; his mother; 2 sons, Tony and Jim of Jerseyville; 4 daughters, Linda Donnellan, Arnold, MO, Mary Jane Godar, Chicago, Lavora, Barbara and Tabatha Godar, all of Jerseyville; 2 brothers, Alfred, Jerseyville and Manuel, FL; 6 sisters, Rosalee Beierman, White Hall, Melba Tepen, Hardin, Elaine Turner and Alice Baalman, both of Alton, Geraldine Krause, Jerseyville and Donna Droege, St. Charles, MO; and 2 grandchildren. Memorials may be given to State Street Baptist church. Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville conducted arrangements.


GODAR. Edith Ethel Godar, 14, daughter of Mr & Mrs Henry Godar, died and funeral held at Baptist church. Rev J R Reynolds. Among those from afar attending the funeral, was ??—— —— of Dow, who in spite of all warnings came per buggy, holding her 3 week old baby closely wrapped in warm clothing in her arms. 2 miles from Jerseyville the young mother took a look at the babe and found it safe; still, when the house of mourning was reached and the little one taken out of the wraps, the spark of life had escaped. The coroner, Dr N F Bray, held the inquest, impaneling: Clyde Cope, Charles Guber (Gubser??), James Heter, Harry E Weller and Rudolph and John Green as the jury. They returned a verdict of suffocation. The babe was buried beside the grave of Miss Edith Ethel Godar.


GODAR. Henry Lester Godar, 26, died at home on E Arch Jerseyville of the flu. Private services from home. Rev Joe Jenkins, officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He leaves his wife and 1 child.


GODAR. Viola Frances Godar, 59, of Jerseyville, died November 11 at Greenwood Manor nursing home. She was born January 12, in Jersey county to the Late Wesley Griffin & Anna (Coleman) Griffin. She married Alfred Godar on April 28, 1942, in St. Patrick church. She was a member of St. Mary church, Fieldon, Women of the Moose and St. Mary Altar Society. Surviving are her husband, Alfred of Jerseyville; her mother, Anna Griffin, Jerseyville; 1 son, Dwain Godar, Fieldon; and 3 daughters, Wanda Groppel; Theresa Killion and Sylvia Chandler, all of Jerseyville; 2 brothers, Harold Griffin, Washington and Virgil Griffin, Jerseyville; 2 sisters, Eunice Kessler of Oregan and Jeneva McClintock of AZ; and 10 grandchildren.


GODFREY. Mrs James P Godfrey, 67, died at Grafton just 2 days after the funeral of her daughter, Mrs Stella Murphy, who was brought to Grafton from CA for burial at her old home. Mrs Godfrey was born at Galena, IL, May 10, 1847, and when a little girl came to Grafton, accompanied by her mother, Mrs Elizabeth Heck and a step brother, Albert Ratzel. At the age of 22 years, she married James P Godfrey. They were parents of 4 children. Surviving are her husband, 2 sons, James and Albert of Godfrey; and 1 daughter, Mrs Cora C Widdaman. Her daughter, Estelle, and her half brother preceded her in death. Albert Ratzel had died January 15, 1915 in El Paso, TX.


GODFREY. Albert W “Ab” Godfrey, 75, an extensive landowner in Jersey county, died suddenly Sunday night July 8, at Robertson Inc., in East St. Louis the death of Mr Godfrey, a member of the firm, was discovered Mon. am by employees who were reporting for work. It was known that he had not been too well the past month, but his death came as a shock to relatives and friends. He had spent Sunday in Jerseyville. A son of the late Mr & Mrs James Godfrey, the deceased was born in Grafton and would have been 76 on September 24. Mr Godfrey had been engaged in the cattle buying and selling business the greater part of his life and had been engaged in this work at National Stockyards in East St. Louis since 1923. 21 years ago he bought the McMahan farm west of Jerseyville and he also has land holdings in other parts of Jersey County. Mr & Mrs a J Wallace and Jimmie Wallace have managed his Jersey county farms for 13 yrs. Mr Godfrey was a member of the Board of Governors of Pere Marquette Boys’ Home at Grafton, the Farmers Club of the St. Louis Chamber of Commerce, the National Organization of Friends of the Land, 4-H Club Foundation and East St. Louis Rotary Club. He was serving as an officer of the latter club. In connection with his cattle business, he had taken an active interest in the cattle projects of 4-H members, and had been given recognition for his contribution to the program. He took part in 4-H programs over the radio on Sun. mornings. Surviving are his wife, La Zetta Godfrey; 3 daughters, Mrs Nancy Gustafsen of Jerseyville, Mrs Helen Wielmuenster of Dow, Mrs Ilah Putnam of Texas City, TX; 1 son, Ernest Godfrey of East St. Louis, and 1 Sister, Mrs Corine Kearney, who resides in St. Louis. Funeral service was held at Kurrus chapel in East St. Louis and burial was in Valhalla cemetery in St. Louis.


GODFREY. Annie Josephine Godfrey, 90 year old Grafton resident died December 21 at Elder care home in Alton. She was born January 26, 1884 in Nevada, MO, the daughter of the late William & Ellen (Job) Worthey. She married Joseph Edward Godfrey, who died in 1933. Surviving are 6 sons, Edgar, Kansas City, MO, Stephen, Jerseyville, Aloysious of St Lpoius, MO, Levi, St Charles, MO Chester B of Grafton and Charles, Godfrey; 3 daughters, Mrs William (Viola) Romel of Chesterfield, MO, Mrs Arthur (Eleanor) Wooster of Holiday Shores and Mrs Maurice (Ethelene) Montgomery of O’fallon, MO; 29 grandchildren; 42 g-grandchildren and 1 brother, William Worthey of San Francisco, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and 1 daughter. Funeral services were held December 24 at St Patrick Catholic Church in Grafton, Rev Patrick Morrow officiating. Interment was in Scenic Hill cemetery. Rosary was recited at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville on December 23.


GODFREY. Henry Stephen Godfrey, 84, died February 26,1990, at Jerseyville care center. He was born in Portage Des Sioux, MO, son of the late Edward Joseph & Annie J (Worthy) Godfrey. Surviving are 3 sisters, Viola Ramel, Alton, Eleanor Wooster, Edwardsville and Sophia Montgomery of Berger, MO; 3 brothers, Roy Godfrey, St Charles, MO, Bernard Godfrey, Grafton and Charles Godfrey of Godfrey. Preceding him in death were 1 Sister, Lucille Godfrey; and 2 brothers, Ed and Allie Godfrey. Visitation was at St. Patrick church, Grafton. Rev Patrick Carroll was celebrant. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery, Grafton. Memorials may be given to Grafton Volunteer Emergency Corps. Jacoby-Schroeder funeral home, Jerseyville was in charge of arrangements.


GODFREY. Rebecca E Godfrey, 85, widow of Benjamin Godfrey, founder of Monticello Seminary, died at her home near Godfrey on New Year Day. She is the last of her immediate family, her husband having died in 1862 and her children since.


GOEDE. Anna Pauline Goede, 60, died August 24, at St. Anthony hospital, Alton. Funeral mass was said August 27, at St. Patrick church, Grafton. Rev Fr Patrick Morrow was celebrant. Interment was in Scenic Hill cemetery, Grafton. She was born in Washington, MO June 28, 1915 a daughter of Louis & Stanka (Gasparovich) Plissick. She is survived by her husband, Major C Goede, Grafton; 2 sons, Gerald Goede, Los Angeles, CA and Lionel Goede of Fenton, MO; 6 grandchildren; 2 g-grandchildren; 1 brother, John Parker, St. Louis; and 2 sisters, Mrs James (Mary) Mckinzie of St. Louis and Mrs Gordon (Catherine) Knight, Pacific, MO. Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Grafton, where a prayer service was said.


GOEDE. Major C Goede, 80, of Granite City, died July 28, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Granite City. He was born in St. Louis and operated Major’s Motel in Grafton for 35 years, retiring in 1975. Survivors include his wife, Irene; son Lionel J “Lonnie” Goede of Fenton, MO; 3 sisters; 1 brother; 6 grandchildren; and 10 g-grandchildren. One son, Gerald C, preceded him in death. Visitation and prayer service were at Pieper Funeral Home in Granite City. Rev Bill Fisherkeller celebrated the funeral mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Granite City. Burial was in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis. Memorials may be given to St. Joseph Church and Knights Templar Eye Foundation.


GOEMAN. Dora Ann Goeman, 82, of R1, Fieldon was dead on arrival at Jersey County Memorial hospital on May 30. Funeral rites were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Leonard Todd officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. She was born November 1, 1890 in Jersey county the daughter of George & Katherine (Lenz) Hetzel. Her husband was the late P F Goeman. She is survived by 1 Son, Henry E Goeman of Fieldon; 1 daughter, Mrs Charles (Catherine) Briggs of Jerseyville; 3 grandchildren; 4 g-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Miss Irene Hetzel of Jerseyville and Mrs Hazel Drainer of Vandalia, Mo; and 5 brothers, Joseph, John, and Ernest Hetzel of Fieldon, and Earl Hetzel of Staunton. Her parents, 1 sister, 2 brothers and her husband preceded her in death.


GOEMAN. John H Goeman, 66, a prosperous citizen of English township, Jersey county, was born in Germany, April 4, 1829. He died November 24, 1895. With his wife he came to this country in 1857, landing in New York, from where he went to St. Louis, then locating in Jersey county where he became proprietor of a fine farm. They were parents of 1 son and 3 daughters. They were members of the German Lutheran church at Fieldon. Funeral was from that church with Rev Martin officiating.


GOEN. A Charles Goen, 49, of R1 Dow, was found dead in a truck in the Mississippi river 1/4 mile east of Clifton Terrace road. He had suffered a heart attack.


GOETTEN. Barbra Goetten, 58, wife of Henry Goetten, died at her home east of St. Mary church, west of Jerseyville, June 29, 1921. Her death follows a long illness. The funeral was held from St. Mary church. Solemn requiem mass was celebrated by Rev Fr Granke, assisted by other priests. The interment was in St. Mary cemetery.


GOETTEN. Mrs C Goetten, 95, of Fidelity died. Funeral from Catholic church near Fieldon. She was the mother of Mrs Fred Bertman.


GOETTEN. Christena Goetten, 25, died at the home of her mother, 9 miles west of Jerseyville on March 23. Funeral from St. Mary church near Fieldon.


GOETTEN. Mrs Christena Goetten, 93 yrs, 11 mo, 21 days, a resident of Jersey county for many years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs John Poggenpohl, at Raymond, IL on March 21. Mrs Goetten is survived by 4 daughters, Mrs Fred Heitzig, Sr, and Mrs Otto Schmidt of Fieldon, Mrs Minnie Vahle of East St. Louis, and Mrs John Poggenpohl of Raymond. The remains were brought to Jennings Bros. undertaking parlor and from there were taken to the home of Mrs Fred Heitzig Sr, Fieldon. Funeral services will be held St. Mary church. Solemn requiem high mass was celebrated with Rev Fr Oppenheim, a friend of the family as celebrant. Interment was in St. Mary cemetery.


GOETTEN. Dennis James Goetten, 21, son of Jersey County Treasurer Roger & Theresa Goetten, RR Fieldon was found dead by 2 friends. Young Goetten, who was working on construction, was found in the back of his International Scout, being used as a camper, by Charles Lowe and Jack Bailey. A charcoal burner was also found in the truck. The young man and his 2 friends were building a house, and the 2 friends slept in a tent, and when they went to wake Dennis to go to work, could not raise him, according to the Macon county coroner. An inquest was held and death was by asphyxiation. The incident occurred at Forsyth, north of Decatur. Dennis was born at St. Joseph hospital in Alton on November 9, 1953 the son of Roger and Theresa (Buehler) Goetten. He attended St. Mary school at Fieldon and Holy Ghost school in Jerseyville and Jersey County Memorial high school. He was a member of the JCHS football squad, winning the back of the year award. He attended Jacksonville College, Southern Illinois U, Edwardsville and was enrolled this year at Sangamon State U. He is survived by his parents, 5 brothers, Gary 23, William 20, Mark 18, Dale 17, Donald 13; and 1 sister, Jana Rose 11. His paternal grandparents Mr & Mrs Henry Goetten of Jerseyville, his maternal Grandmother, Mrs Helen Buehler of East St. Louis, and aunts and uncles. Visitation was from Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville where rosary was recited. Services were held at St. Mary cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Heart Fund.


GOETTEN. Elizabeth Goetten, 88, died November 30 at St. Anthony Hospital, Alton. Born March 1, 1895 in Lindsey, NE, daughter of Henry & Christina (Bunse) Beiermann, Married Anthony C Goetten. He died October 10, 1959. She leaves 1 son, Cyril of Jerseyville, 2 daughters, Bernardine Huebener of Brighton and Genevieve Goetten of Gillespie; 11 grandchildren; 7 g-grandchildren; 1 brother, Bernard Beiermann of Columbus, NE; 2 sisters, Bertha Broer of Petersburg, NE and Josephine Beiermann of Omaha, NE.


GOETTEN. Henry Goetten, 60, well known resident of the West Woods vicinity, died at his home 8 miles west of Jerseyville. He was born in Jersey county and passed his entire life here. His wife died about 8 years ago. He leaves 3 daughters, Mrs Leo Beierman of Pawnee, IL, Mrs Anthony Beierman and Helen Goetten of Jerseyville and 4 sons, Edward, Anthony, John and Henry of Jersey County; and 1 brother, Charles of this County. Funeral from St. Mary West Woods. Rev Fr Granke. Burial in St. Mary cemetery.


GOETTEN. Henry J Goetten, 77, retired farmer, who has resided in Jerseyville for 16 years, died December 28, at St. Joseph hospital, Alton. Funeral mass was celebrated at St. Mary church, with Fr William Hembrow celebrant. Burial was in St. Mary cemetery. Born June 2, 1901 in Jersey county, he was the son of Henry & Barbara (Strasser) Goetten. He was a former Supervisor of English Township and former Auditor of Jersey Township. He was a member of St. Mary church, West Woods, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and Elks Lodge and had served on the Jersey County Memorial hospital board. His survivors are his wife, Margaret (Schmieder) Goetten; 2 daughters, Mrs Maurita Fraley and Mrs Rosalie Hansen of Jerseyville; 4 sons, Roger, Richard and Wilfred of Jerseyville and Norbert of Carrollton; 1 sister, Mrs Helen Bauer, Jerseyville; 28 grandchildren; 12 g-grandchildren. His parents, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters preceded him in death. The rosary and ceremony of K of C were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville.


GOETTEN. Miss Josephine Goetten, 40, died at the home of her mother, Mrs Minnie Watson in St. Louis on March 27. Born in Fieldon in 1883, she was the daughter of Fred Goetten. Family moved to Hardin where they lived until she was 25. They moved to Booneville, MO and then to St. Louis where they have since lived. Miss Goetten was left $5,000 by the will of her employer about 1 year ago. Funeral from St. Mary church, Fieldon. Rev Gramke serving. Burial in St. Mary cemetery.


GOETTEN. Katherine Goetten, 85, of Jerseyville, died July 10, at Greenwood Manor nursing home. She was the widow of the late Edward C Goetten. She was born in Calhoun county, October 17, 1888, the daughter of Theodore & Elizfabeth (Carey) Schoberend. She is survived by 1 son, Edmund a Goetten, Jerseyville; 3 daughters, Mrs Jerome (Marie) Zipprich, Jerseyville; Mrs Harold (Marcella) Geierman, Cottage Hills and Mrs Eugene (Gertrude) Beierman, of Columbia; 15 grandchildren and 2 g-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, 4 sisters, and 1 brother. She was a member of Holy Ghost Altar Society. Services were held at Holy Ghost church July 13, with mass celebrated by Fr Robert L Heintz. Interment was in St. Mary cemetery. Memorials may be given to Holy Ghost building fund.


GOETTEN. William Jeremy (Jamie) Goetten, 6 1/2 mo old son of William and Tamara (House) Goetten, died at Mercy Hospital, Urbana on January 29. He had been in ill health since birth. A Mass of the Angels was said at Holy Ghost Church on January 31 following burial services at St. Mary cemetery. Rev Robert Heintz was celebrant. He was born on July 7, 1975 in Jerseyville. In addition to his parents, survivors include his grandparents, Mr & Mrs Robert House of Jerseyville and Mr & Mrs Roger Goetten of Fieldon; and g-grandparents, Mr & Mrs Henry Goetten of Jerseyville and Mrs Helen Buechler of East St. Louis.


GOFF. Enid Irene Goff, 71, of Royal, AR, died in the Laredo Texas Doctors hospital. She was born in Dow the daughter of Charles & Mary Frances (Holmes) Burris. She Married Clifford F Goff December 17, 1943 in St. Charles, MO. Surviving are her husband; 2 sisters, Imo Clements of Meadowbrook and Mary Ballaard of Wood River; 2 brothers, Paul Burris of Wood River and Charles Burris of Meadowbrook. Rev Gary Ballard officiated at the service and burial was in Upper Alton cemetery.


GOFORTH. Roy Paul Goforth, 35, of Shipman was dead on arrival at Alton Memorial hospital Sun. afternoon following an accident at Laclede Steel Co. He was fatally injured after falling 60 feet off the roof of a building at the plant. A maintenance rigger, he had been employed at Laclede for 13 years. Surviving are his widow, Marie (Mills) Goforth; 1 daughter, Mary and 2 sons, Michael and Matthew, at home; his parents Mr & Mrs Woodrow Goforth of Hopdale; 5 brothers, Danny of O’fallon, MO, Woodrow of Jerseyville, Leonard of Hopedale, Lary of Peoria, Douglas of Tremont; 2 sisters, Mrs Joanne Mathis of Hillview and Mrs Janet Donley of Macomb. Funeral mass was celebrated October 21, at St. Denis Catholic church with Rev John Shehan celebrant. Burial was in St. Denis cemetery.


GOHEEN. Alice Bell Goheen, 86 yrs, 3 mo, 29 days, of Newbern, died at Jersey County Memorial hospital where she had been a patient for a month. Funeral services were held on New Years Day at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Roland Hastie, Pastor of the Assembly of God Church officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. She was born in Greene county, August 30, 1882, a daughter of the late James & Fanny (Admire) Ashford. Surviving are 4 sons, Harry, Charles and Lester Goheen, Dow, and Ernest of Godfrey; 2 daughters, Mrs Lela Johnson and Mrs Bessie Daniels of Dow; 22 grandchildren, and 3 – incomplete


GOLDEN. Sarah Ellen Burch Golden, 80, a former resident of Kane, died February 23, in Riverside, CA, where she had resided for several years. The body was brought to Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Funeral services were held March 1, at the Methodist church in Kane. Rev C L Peterson officiated and interment was in Kane cemetery. Mrs Golden was the daughter of the late William & Susan (Van Meter) Witt. She is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs H B Reynolds and Mrs E T Patterson of Riverside, CA; and 1 sister, Mrs Lucie Tompkins, Kane.


GONDER. Mrs Elizabeth Gonder, who died late week was laid to rest in Hutchens cemetery, near Woody, IL. Funeral was held at Jacoby Chapel with Rev E T Carroll.


GONDER. John Riley Gonder, 31, died June 29. Funeral at home with Rev E T Carroll officiating. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery. He leaves his widow Sarah A. His Mother, Mrs Nancy Jane Gonder died March 12, 1915.


GONDER. Lizzie Gonder, 72, wife of Jacob H Gonder, a section hand, succumbed suddenly to apoplexy. After she had written a letter to her son who had announced his welcome visit in the near future, she sat down in a chair and being in a joyful spirit. Suddenly she began a severe coughing spell and when her husband attempted to give some water, choking set in and within minutes she expired. Coroner Dr N F Bray, conducted an inquest. The jurors empanelled were: S D Stanley, Chas W Lenz, J Pruitt, Kallen Collenberg, Jos Laverne and Chas W Lofton. After hearing the testimony of Jacob H Gonder, the husband, Mrs Alice Brown and Mrs Lizzie Terpening, the jury returned the verdict: death due to a stroke of apoplexy.


GONDER. Nancy Jane Gonder, 71 yrs, 2 mo, 18 days, was born in KY December 20, 1843 and died at her home in Jerseyville March 8, 1915. She was first married to John W Barrett to which union were born 3 sons and 3 daughters; 1 son and 1 daughter preceded her in death. Her second marriage was to Jacob Gonder to whom she presented 1 son and 1 daughter, the latter also being claimed by death. She was laid to rest March 12, Rev E T Carroll conducting the services at Jacoby undertaking parlor. Interment was in Hutchins cemetery in Greene county. Those left to mourn are her husband, Jacob Gonder; 2 daughters, Mrs Delia Yocum, Poplar Bluff, MO and Mrs Rosa Ludowski of St. Louis, MO; 3 sons, Wm Barrett, James F Barrett and John R Gonder of Jerseyville; 3 brothers, 2 sisters and a host of more distant relative and friends.


GOODRICH. Hon. H O Goodrich, 74, was born in Delaware Co, NY on October 3, 1819. He came to Jersey County in 1840. He married Jane (Knapp) Goodrich on June 2, 1847.


GOODRICH. Hon. A A Goodrich, 69, son of Hon. H O Goodrich & Jane A (Knapp) Goodrich was born in Jerseyville January 8, 1849. He was appointed candidate to West Point but because of ill health left there in his 4th year. He read law in Jerseyville and Springfield with his uncles, Anthony L and Robert Knapp and was admitted to the bar in January 1873. He practiced in Jerseyville until 1889 when he moved to Chicago. He was elected States Attorney in 1887; reelected in 1880 and1884. In 1887 he was elected County Judge. He went back to Chicago where he stayed until 1912 when he again returned to Jerseyville. On of the prominent lawyers of Chicago and organizer of the firm of Goodrich, Vincent and Bradley. He leaves his sister, Kitty; his other sister, bleel ??, died about 6 years ago. Several times he had been a candidate for congress. At one time he was in partnership with John a Shephard. Funeral held from Elias Cockrel home with Rev W S Neely officiating. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery.


GOODRICH. C H Goodrich, Esq, died at his home after a long illness. Born at Harpersfield, Delaware Co., NY in 1795. He commenced the study of law in the office of Samuel Sherwood, and was admitted to the bar at the age of 21. He came to Jersey county in 1838. Among his friends was Stephen A Douglas. Mr Goodrich filled many positions requiring trust and honor. He has left a pure record on the tablet of time.

GOODRICH. Helen Faye Goodrich, 77, of Grafton, died April 13, at St. Anthony hospital, Alton. She was born April 4, 1909, in Calhoun county to the late Terry Elder & Mary Besaw. She married Robert Goodrich and was a retired beautician. She was a member of St. Patrick church, Grafton. Surviving are 1 step daughter, Nora Ann Freeman, Alton; 3 sisters, Dorothy Wallace of Moro, Berniece Maguire of Melborne, FL, and Margie Chase of Bethalto; 4 step grandchildren; and 2 step g-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and 1 bro. Visitation and rosary were April 17, at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Grafton. The funeral was at St. Patrick church, Grafton with Rev Patrick Carroll concelebrant. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery in Grafton. GOODRICH. James Goodrich, 70, was born in Delhi, Delaware county, NY and came to Jerseyville in the spring of 1839. In 1851 he moved to Ft. Madison, IA, where he practiced law. In 1861, he joined the federal army and served through the war for the union and then settled in Warrenshburg, MO. He came to Jersey county in may to visit relatives. He was known as “Gus”. Burial was in city cemetery.


GOODRICH. Mrs Lucinda Goodrich, 80, died January 9, at her home in Grafton. Burial was in Salem cemetery. She was born near Salem, Jersey county, and resided here all her life. She leaves 6 children, John and Ralph of Grafton, Louis and William of St. Louis, Mrs Ella Wells of Straton, NE, and Mrs Clementine Hammond of New Kirk, OK.


GOODWIN. Glynn S Goodwin, 63, of Bull Shoals, AR, formerly of Grafton, died Jun 5 in Springfield, MO. Services were at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Grafton with Rev Fr Anthony Schmidt officiating. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery. He was a son of Blanche (Cox) Goodwin and the late Ira Goodwin and was born March 15, 1920 in Columbus, MS. He had worked at Clark Oil & Refinery for 25 yrs. Surviving are his wife, Betty (Keller) Goodwin whom he married October 16, 1945 in Grafton; his mother of Selma, AL; 3 sons, Charles of Grafton, Glynn, Edwardsville and Lawrence of Jerseyville; 1 daughter, Margie Goodwin of Alton and 5 grandchildren. GOODWIN. Leslie Carl Goodwin, 79, of RR1 Fieldon died at John Cochran Veterans Hospital, St. Louis where he had been hospitalized since January 29. GORDON. David Gordon, 54, died June 20, at Jersey County Memorial hospital. He was a carpenter with Alton Local #377. Born in Herculaneum, MO, his parents were the late Elmer & Mary (Hammall) Gordon. He married Rosanne (Farmer) Gordon October 14, 1978, in Lexington, IL. She survives. Also surviving are 1 son, Joseph, and 1 Daughter, Kimberly Gordon both at home; 2 brothers, John Gordon of FL, and Harold Gordon of WA State; 4 sisters, Shirley Detchum of Desoto, MO, Grace Laird of Thermopolis, WY, Lucia Bush of Conway, AR, and Virginia Gregory of LA. GORDON. Mrs Delia M Gordon, 34, died in San Diego, CA on January 4, 1915. Remains were taken to the home of her parents in Brighton. She was born September 6, 1881, in Brighton, daughter of Mr & Mrs George A Keas. On January 12, Rev A S Leonard conducted the funeral at Presbyterian church.


GORECKI. Dr Ferdinand Gorecki, 66, of Jerseyville, died December 27, 1979 at St. Luke hospital, East St. Louis. He was a well known Jerseyville physician and graduated from Illinois U College of Medicine, Chicago in 1940. He served in WWII as a Captain in the Air Force and was a flight surgeon from 1942-46. He came to Jerseyville to establish his medical practice May 10, 1948. Born in Staunton, November 11, 1912, he was the son of the late Ferdinand & Mary (Tomzik) Gorecki Sr. He was a staff physician at Jersey County Memorial hospital, was a member of the IL Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Association, and American Academy of Family Physicians, Jersey-Calhoun Medical Society and American Legion Post #492. Surviving are his wife, Janet a (Schieldt) Gorecki whom he married December 11, 1948; she, being from WI; 1 daughter, Mrs Janet Joann Kallal of Jerseyville and 1 son James Fred Gorecki, USAF enroute to Germany, presently at home; 2 grandchildren; and 1 Sister, Barbara Havens of South Standard. Services were held at Hope Lutheran Church with Rev Hugh H Fitz of Faith Lutheran Church, Godfrey, officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Memorials may be given to Jersey County Memorial hospital and Hope Lutheran church.


GORHAM. Miss Maria Gorham, 40, died March 1, 1904 at MO Baptist sanitarium, following an operation to remove a tumor. She was born in Jerseyville, February 24, 1864. She lived with the family of Sanford Ross and Mrs Antoinette Cross (should both names be cross?). She was to Mrs Cross almost a daughter in tenderness and love. Burial from Baptist church.


GORHAM. Ollie M Gorham,78, wife of Harvey Gorham of Medora died in the Carlinville area hospital where she had been a patient for 2 weeks. She had been ill for a year. She was the former Ollie Briggs, daughter of the late Mr & Mrs Alby Briggs and was born November 8, 1884, at East Newbern. She married Mr Gorham on April 7, 1902 and they resided in Jersey county until 20 years ago when Mr Gorham retired and the couple moved to Medora to make their home. Surviving are her husband, 2 daughters, Mrs Charles Strunk, Fidelity and Mrs Laura Eckman of Kenosha, WI; 2 sons, Paul of Medora and Elmore of Carlinville; 1 brother, Robert Briggs of Troy; 2 sisters, Mrs Flora Chappee of Granite City and Mrs Floyd Miller of Murrayville; 11 grandchildren and 4 g-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Warner funeral home in Medora with Rev William Greer officiating. Burial was in Medora cemetery.


GORIN. Harry Eugene Gorin, 68, of Brighton, died September 10 at Alton Memorial hospital. Services were held at Warner-Targhetta funeral home, Brighton. Burial was in Brighton cemetery. Rev Keith Geckeler officiated. Born in Jersey county, he was the son of the Late Frank E & Lilly B (Lee) Gorin. He was employed at Shell Oil Co. for 25 years, retiring in 1967, and was on the Piasa Township Board of Trustees. Surviving are his Wife, Vivian (Hampton) Gorin whom he married October 18, 11936 in Carrollton; 4 sons, Don of Indian Rock Beach, FL, Jim, Brighton, Ed of Piasa and Gary, Wood River, and 9 grandchildren. Brighton Odd Fellows conducted a service at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian church of Brighton.

GORMAN. Bernard Louis Gorman, 74, of Jerseyville, died December 4 at St. Mary health center, St. Louis. The Jerseyville business man had been in ill health for some time. He was president of Gorman Bros. Ready-mix and Asphalt Co. which he had operated since 1947. He was born in Fidelity township a son of Bernard & Rose (Hart) Gorman, and was a WWII veteran. Gorman received the Carnegie Medal for Heroism for the capture of a triple killer armed with a semi-automatic rifle, who was threatening the lives of 7 of his employees in October 1969. He later received the Academy of Achievement Gold Plate Award in San Francisco, CA. He was a member of St. Francis Church, K of C, Lions Club, Moose Lodge; Elks Lodge #954 where he had served as a past Exalted Ruler and past District Deputy, American Legion, and was a member of the Board of Directors of Midstate Ready-mix Assn. He also served as a member of the Jerseyville City Council from 1955-57. Surviving are his wife, Jean (Shivers) (Pistoriuss) Gorman whom he married April 29, 1975 at St. Francis church; 1 daughter, Jane Leonhardt of Jerseyville; 4 step daughters, Mary Carol, Dianna, Laura and Lisa Pistorius, all of Jerseyville; 4 step sons, Mark Stephen and Eric Pistorius all of Jerseyville and Kurt Pistorius of St. Louis; 1 brother, Harry Gorman, Huntsville, AL; and 2 sisters, Rosalie Mckonald of St. Louis and Margaret Wuelner of Alton; 3 grandchildren and 2 step grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Frances (Goodwin) Gorman who died in August 1969; 1 son James, March 1968, and 1 brother, James, August 1979. GORMAN. Elwanda “Johnnie” Gorman, 56, of Jerseyville, died December 18, at Jersey County Memorial hospital from an apparent heart attack. She was taken to the hospital Sun. eve. She was born May 10, 1922 in Malden, MO, a daughter of the Late Ralph & Pearl (Davis) Darnell. She was a member of the Jerseyville Moose and Eagles Lodges, Royal Neighbors of America and Senior Citizens. Her survivors include her husband, Clifford L Gorman whom she married May 9, 1968; 2 sisters, Melba Hardin of East Alton and Joyce Burks of Malden, MO; 2 brothers, Sam and Jim Darnell also of Malden. 2 brothers preceded her in death. Visitation was from Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The funeral was held there December 20 by Rev William Elder of Bible Baptist church. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.


GORMAN. Harry H Gorman, 74, of Huntsville, AL, formerly of Jerseyville, died December 14, 1988, in Huntsville after a lengthy illness. Gorman was a business administrator to Dr Werner von Braun at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville. He was born in Jerseyville, son of the late Bernard & Rose (Hart) Gorman. On December 29, 1943, in St. Louis, he married Helen (Wayland) Gorman and she survives. Also surviving are 4 daughters, Mary Hart Roberts of Enterprise, AL, Margaret McBride of Washington, DC, Rosanne Smythe of Huntsville and Katie Liebowitz of Raleith, NC; 3 Sons, Lt Col John Gorman of Valdosta, GA, Dr Patrick Gorman of Madison, AL, and Tom Gorman of Atlanta, GA; 10 grandchildren and 2 sisters, Rosalie Mcdonald of Jerseyville and Margaret Wuellner, Alton. 2 brothers Louis and James Gorman preceded him in death. A memorial mass was celebrated at Holy Ghost church in Jerseyville with Rev William Hembrow as celebrant. Staten funeral home was in charge of local arrangements.


GORMAN. Ivy Gorman, 55, died November 13, at Barnes hospital, St. Louis from injuries suffered in a shooting incident October 31. Funeral mass was celebrated at Holy Ghost church with Fr Willam Hembrow as celebrant. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Mrs Gorman, widow of the late James Gorman who died August 21, 1979, was a real estate broker and owner of Curran-Gorman Real Estate. She and her brother, Tony Hazelwonder, also operated “The Ivy” restaurant at Delhi. She was born April 2, 1927 in Calhoun county, a daughter of Bernice (Grandsinger) Hazelwonder of Jerseyville and the late Frank Hazelwonder. She is survived by her mother; 2 sons, F “Rocky” Poglajen and James ???? ; 2 daughters, Sandy Long of Jerseyville and Sister Frances Cabrini, Ssmd of Belleville, the former Brenda Poglajen; 2 brothers, Frank Hazelwonder of Ambyo and Tony Hazelwonder of Jerseyville; 6 sisters, Thelma Herkert, Michael, Hilda Mcintyre, Winchester, Edna Bellm, Marian Droege, Cleo Holmes and Janice Smith, Jerseyville; and 2 grandchildren. Her first husband, Frank Poglajen, died January 25, 1958. Memorials may be given to Holy Ghost church.


GORMAN. James Gorman, 60, died at his home 7 miles northeast of Jerseyville. Funeral was from St. Francis church with Rev Harty officiating. Burial in St. Francis cemetery. He was a native of Co Kildare, Ireland. When a young man he came to America to seek his fortune. He came to New Orleans where he engaged in business for several years, moving to Jersey county in 1860. In 1865, he married Margaret (Malone) Gorman. Of their 7 children only 4 survive.


GORMAN. James L Gorman, 71, was dead on arrival at Jersey County Memorial hospital August 21. He had suffered from a heart condition, but his death was unexpected. He was a real estate broker with Curran-Gorman Realty. Born August 19, 1908 in Jersey county, he was a son of the late Bernard L & Rose Ann (Hart) Gorman. He was a member of Holy Ghost church, Fourth Degree O C, Jerseyville Moose Lodge and past Exalted Ruler of the Local Elks Lodge. Surviving are his wife, Iva a (Hazelwonder) whom he married July 20, 1965; 1 son, James L Gorman II; 1 stepson, Frank R Poglajen, Jerseyville and 2 step daughters, Mrs Sandra L Long of Jerseyville and Sister Frances Cabrini of Belleville; 2 brothers, Louis, Jerseyville and Harry of Huntsville, AL; 2 sisters, Rosalie McDonald, St. Louis and Margaret Wuelner, Alton; and 2 grandchildren. Funeral mass was celebrated at Holy Ghost church with Fr William Hembrow celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis church. GORMAN. James Louis Gorman, 20, of Jerseyville, was dead on arrival at Passavant Hospital, Jacksonville. The Jerseyville youth died from injuries suffered in a truck-auto crash at the junction of 100 and 104 near Bluffs. He was born December 9, 1949, in Alton, the son of Louis & Francis (Goodwin) Gorman. He was a 1966 graduate of Jersey County Memorial high school and was currently a student on the campus of SIU, Edwardsville, and was a member of K of C. He is survived by his parents – incomplete

GORMAN. Rose Ann Gorman, 77 yrs, 22 days, wife of Bernard L Gorman sr, died December 30 at her home in Fidelity township following an extended period of ill health. She was a daughter of the late James & Mary (Maley) Hart, natives of Ireland, and was born at Stone City, IA on December 8, 1875. Surviving are her husband; 2 Daughters, Mrs George H Mcdonald, St. Louis and Mrs Arthur H Wuellner of Alton; 3 sons, Louis and James L Gorman of Jerseyville and Harry H Gorman, San Francisco, CA; 11 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Mrs Walter Powers and Mrs James Bray of Jerseyville and Mrs Arch Cope of Alton. Funeral services were held at St. Francis church January 2, 1954. Requiem mass was celebrated by Rev Fr John J Clancy and interment was in St. Francis cemetery. GORMAN. Warren L Gorman sr, 70, died February 16 at Alton Memorial hospital. He was born July 21, 1911 in Mt. Sterling. He was a son of frank & rose (marlow) gorman. He had worked at national marine in Grafton. Surviving are his wife, Katie (Hayes) Gorman whom he married June 22, 1934; 2 sons, Warren L Gorman Jr, Grafton and Robert of Marion; 3 daughters, Kiane Johnson, Karen K White, and Barbara Hand of Grafton; 13 grandchildren and 3 g-grandchildren; 1 brother, James of East Alton; 2 sisters, Florence Williams, St. Louis, and Lila Tuetkin, Arizona. Services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Grafton. Masonic services were conducted by Grafton Full Moon Lodge. Memorials may be given to Gospel Tabernacle, Wood River.


GORMAN. William Gorman, 22, eldest son of Patrick Gorman, living 7 miles northeast of Jerseyville, died of consumption on June 22. Funeral from St. Francis church and burial in St. Francis cemetery. Pall bearers: Charles Cook, Nicholas Bray, James Hart, James and Robert Whalen and Daniel Ready.


GORRELL. Peter Gorrell, 62, died at his home 2 mi north of Rosedale on May 9. He was well known over the county and loved farming. He was a loving father and good citizen. He was an old soldier and was buried with military honors. He leaves his wife and 5 children. He was born in Marion county, OH. He married Harriet a (Tindle) Gorell in Greenfifeld, IL in 1852. Burial in Rosedale cemetery with Hilliar Post GAR of Grafton giving honors.


GORRY. James Gorry, 70, died at his home near Fidelity. Funeral from St. Francis church, Jerseyville and burial was in St. Francis cemetery. Rev J T Murphy officiating. He leaves his wife and 4 children.


GOSE. Charles Theodore Gose, 67, of Grafton was killed instantly when he fell 35 feet while topping a tree on Washington St. in Grafton. He was dead on arrival at the scene February 11 by coroner Paul Schroeder. Gose, who had been hired by the city of Grafton to fell the tree, had cut the limbs and was topping the tree when the top fell, jerking him with it. He had tied his lifeline to the top of the tree. An inquest pending. A commercial fisherman, he was born September 30, 1907 in Golden Eagle, a son of Charles & Ida Catherine (Bethel) Gose. He was a WWII veteran. Surviving are his wife, Dawn (Wysocke) Gose; 2 sons, Charles Eugene and Brian Scott; 1 daughter, Mrs Alvin (Thelma) Yates of Granite City; 1 grandchild; 2 brothers, Harold Ralston, CA and William Donald of St. Louis; 1 sister, Mrs Walter (Eugenia) Narozny of St. Louis. His parents and 1 sister preceded him in death. Services were held February 13, at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Interment was in Jefferson Barracks Memorial Cemetery, St. Louis.


GOSHORN. Gertrude Goshorn, died at Jersey County Memorial hospital. A daughter of the late Mr & Mrs James Coombs, she was born March 29, 1878 in KS. She is survived by 3 daughters, Mrs Myrtle Akres, and Mrs Marie Heiderscheid, both of Jerseyville, and Mrs Agnes Devening of Fieldon; 2 sons, Willaim of Moscow, IA and James of Jerseyville; 1 sister, Mrs Stella Hubert, East St. Louis, and 2 Brother, Pearl Coombs, Mapa, CA; 15 grandchildren and 37 g-grandchildren. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Leonard Todd, pastor of Fieldon UCC, will conduct services at the funeral home. Interment was in Fieldon cemetery.


GOSHORN. Hubert Nicholas Goshorn, 43, died at Jersey County Memorial hospital where he, his wife, and his mother were taken following a gas heater explosion in his home in Jerseyville. Hubert Nicholas Goshorn was born October 6, 1915, in Greene county. Surviving are his widow, Reohn Goshorn; 1 son, Gerald of Jerseyville; 1 daughter, Jersi Ann Goshorn, Springfield and his mother; 2 sisters, Mrs Dewey Heiderscheid and Mrs Paul Devening of Fieldon; 2 brothers, Willaim of Muscatine, IA and James of Jerseyville. He was president of Jerseyville Aerie of the Eagles Lodge, and the Lodge has postponed its Thanksgiving party scheduled for Sun. He was a member of the Jerseyville Masonic Lodge and of the Westerner Club of Olin Matheson Chemical Corp. at East Alton where he was employed. The body is at Jacoby funeral home where Masonic rites were conducted Sat. eve. Services were Sun. and burial was in Fieldon cemetery.


GOSHORN. James Pearl Goshorn, 69, was dead on arrival at Jersey County Memorial hospital. His death was unexpected. Final rites were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev William Smith officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. A retired employee of Alton Box Board Co., he was born March 27, 1903 a son of Nicholas & Gertrude (Coombs) Goshorn. His wife Kathryn (Kraushaar) Goshorn, is deceased. He is survived by 1 daughter, Mrs Hugh (Stella) Siebert of Brighton; 1 brother, William Goshorn of Summerville, SC; and 1 sister, Mrs Agnes Devening of Jerseyville. His parents 2 sisters and 1 brother preceded him in death.


GOSHORN. Jennie L Goshorn, 84, of Jerseyville, died March 8, at Jersey County Memorial hospital. She was the widow of Louis Goshorn who died March 15, 1970. She was born October 23, 1890, in Greene county, the daughter of the late James & Alice Lewis. She is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs Hellen Kella, Joliet, and Miss Virginia B Huitt of Jerseyville; 1 sister, Mrs Salemma Varble of Lapuente, CA, 3 grandchildren and 4 g-grandchildren. Funeral services were held March 11 at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev R E George of United Methodist church officiated. Interment followed in Fieldon cemetery.


GOSHORN. Louis Goshorn, 84, died Sunday afternoon at Greenlawn nursing home, Jerseyville. Visitation was from Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville where services were held. Rev M. Edwards Breed, pastor of First United Presbyterian church officiated. Burial was in Fieldon cemetery. Mr Goshorn, a retired farmer, was born in Fieldon, September 25, 1885 a son of the late William & Annette (Wheaton) Goshorn. Surviving are his wife, Jennie Goshorn , Jerseyville; 1 daughter, Mrs Ellen Kella, Joliet, 1 step daughter, Miss Virginia B Huitt, St. Louis, 3 grandchildren and 3 g-grandchildren.


GOSHORN. Lt William Goshorn, born Juanita Co., PA. He moved to Ohio and enlisted in army with his brother, Nicholas Goshorn in Co. F 931 Reg. Ohio Inf. Vol. Discharged June 19, 1865. Nicholas was killed in service. William came to Jersey county and wed Antonette (Wheaton) Goshorn. They were parents of 7 children. Surviving him are 2 sons, Nicholas of Eldred and Louis of Richwood Township; 2 daughters, Sophia of SD and Mary of Richwood Township.


GOSHORN. William D Goshorn, 75, died July 9 in Summerville, SC. Rites were held at Parks Funeral Home Chapel and burial was in Summerville cemetery. GOSSRAU. Mrs Blanche Gossrau, a native of Grafton, died December 31, at her home in St. Louis. The deceased was born in Grafton May 31, 1885, a daughter of the late George & Sarah Nelson. Surviving are her brother, George L Nelson, Wood River; 2 sisters, Mrs C B Camp of Roodhouse and Mrs Daisy Dickman of St. Louis.


GOTTER. John Gotter Sr., 86, d March 3, at St. Joseph hospital, Alton. He had been a patient since February 19. The funeral was from St. John United Church of Christ, Brighton with De Emil Bassler officiating. Interment was in Brighton cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church and Heart Fund. Warner-Targhetta funeral home was the scene of the visitation. He was born May 8, 1888 in Piasa township, Jersey county, a son of the late Godfrey & Sarah (Christman) Gotter and was a farmer until retirement. He was married March 27, 1912 to the former olga weiser who preceded him in death. He had been a life long member of St. John’s church and was at one time active in Jersey County Farm Bureau. Surviving are 3 daughters, Mrs Barney (Erma) Chesus of St. Louis, Mrs Frank (Alice) Ebbert, Brighton and Mrs George (Vaneta) Enrekin, Greenfield; 1 son, John Gotter Jr, Brighton 5 grandchildren; and 8 g-grandchildren.


GOUNDS. Carl Leroy Gounds, 36, died November 18 at Alton Memorial hospital. Funeral rites were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Dorcie Hill officiated and interment was in Belltown cemetery. He was born October 23, 1936 in Grafton a son of Carl S & Lucille (Kelley) Gounds. He was a farm laborer. Surviving are his wife Matilda (Teney) Gounds; 3 daughters, Rosie Marie Taylor, Debra Ann White and Janet Ruth White all at home; foster father, Truman Pocklington of Shipman, who reared him; 1 stepson, Steven Louis Taylor of O’fallon; his mother, Mrs Lucille Lynch of Dundee, FL; 5 sisters, Mrs Lewis Blandenship of Dundee, Mrs Luevena Nelson of Alton, Mrs Virginia Crawford of St. Louis, Mrs Ruth Margaret Cunningham of Fidelity, and Mrs Mary Wilma Holder of Denverm, CO; and 2 half brothers, Harold W Kelley of White Hall and Ronald Rue of Dundee, FL.


GOWIN. Emma Lee Gowin, 81, of RR Grafton d February 27 at Jersey County Memorial hospital. She was born August 11, 1896 in Texas, a daughter of Mr & Mrs John Wright. She is survived by her husband, Minor Gowin of Grafton; 1 Brother, Sam Wright of Texas and 1 sister, Pearl Gross of CA; 1 half sister, Myrtle Guess of TX and nieces and nephews. Services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Robert Neale officiated. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery.


GOWIN. John Mason Gowin, former Grafton resident died last month. Word was received by relatives in Grafton. He had resided in Marvestha, CA and services were from West Culver City Baptist Church with Pastor Lester Kenizie officiating. Burial was in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, OR. Surviving are 5 children; 2 sisters and 2 brothers. Minor Gowin and Mrs Russell Morgan of Grafton are his brother and sister.


GOWIN. Leslie N Gowin, 84, of Jerseyville, died March 8, at Barnes hospital, St. Louis. A retired grain and livestock farmer, he was born July 1, 1892 in Jersey county, a son of George P and Libby (Shafer) Gowin. Gowin was a member of Otterville Baptist church. Surviving are his widow, Freda (Baum) Gowin to whom he was married October 4, 1916; 2 daughters, Mrs Dellon (Mildred) Fritz of Jerseyville and Mrs Gary (Joyce) Hart of Alton; 6 sons, Wilbur, Robert and Ronald Gowin all of Jerseyville, Raymond Gowin of Franklin, IN, Norman Gowin, Williamsville, NY and Rev Donald Gowin of Wyaconda, MO; 1 sister , Mrs Stella Kirchner of Fieldon and 2 brothers, George, Granite City and Monor of Kane; 24 grandchildren and 10 g-grandchildren. GOWIN. Loretta A Gowin, 74, of Jerseyville, died October 11. Born in Calhoun county, October 14, 1907 she was the daughter of William & Elizabeth (Zahrli) Evering. She leaves her husband Minor Gowin whom she married November 23, 1927 in Jerseyville; 5 sons, William of Kane, Garland and Joseph of Bethalto, John of Jonesboro, Ar, James of Carrollton; 3 daughters, Juanita Lowrance of Bethalto, Diana Mccauley of San Pedro, CA and Doris Gowin of Jerseyville; 1 sister, Edna Kahl of Alton; 21 grandchildren; and 5 g-grandchildren. Her parents, 1 son, 1 brother and 4 sisters preceded her in death. Funeral from Bethany Baptist church. Burial in Gunterman cemetery.


GOWIN. Minor S Gowin, 79, of Jerseyville, died January 10, 1983 at Christian ne hospital, St. Louis. Services were conducted at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. He was born March 6, 1903 in Otterville, a son of George P & Libby (Schafer) Gowin and retired in 1967 from OlinCorp. after 26 years service as machine adjuster. Surviving are 5 sons, Bill, Kane, Garland and Joseph of Bethalto, John, Jonesboro, AR and James of Carrollton; 3 daughters, Juanita Lowrance, Bethalto, Diana Mccauley and Doris Gowin of Jerseyville; brother, George Gowin, Granite City, and sister, Stella Kirchner, Fieldon; 21 grandchildren and 6 g-grandchildren. Nancy Lee Gowin, 40, wife of William M Gowin of Jerseyville, died at St. Joseph hospital, Alton, where she had been transferred 2 days previously from Barnes hospital, St. Louis, where she had been hospitalized for 2 weeks. Mrs Gowin had suffered from a heart condition for sometime and had been hospitalized in Alton, St. Louis and Jerseyville since July 5. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev William Loafman of Medora conducted the rites and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Born December 12, 1929 in Jersey county she was the daughter of the late Dellie & Blanch (Crandell) Osburn. A retired machine operator and inspector at Olin Mathieson, she was a member of the Fieldon Home Extension Unit. In addition to her husband, she leaves, 1 sister, Mrs Helen Hagen, Jerseyville; 3 brothers, Clarence and Glenn Osburn of Grafton and James R Osburn of Shawno, WI. Her parents and 1 brother preceded her in death.


GOWINS. Frances A Gowins, 85, resident of Cottage Hills, died in Wood River Township Hospital. She was a daughter of the late Mr & Mrs George T Highfill and was born in Rosedale on March 8, 1875. She had resided in Madison county for the past 56 years and in her earlier life was employed at Western Cartridge Co. Her husband, Henry M Gowins, occurred in 1908 in Colorado where he had gone for health reasons. She is survived by 1 daughter, Mrs Frances Land, Bethalto; 1 son, Henry B , Cottage Hills; 1 brother, S D Highfill, White River, SD; 3 sisters, Mrs Daisy Eades, Rosewood Hts, Mrs Mabel Eades, Wood River, and Mrs Eva Ferguson, Roxanna; 14 grandchildren, and 26 g-grandchildren. Funeral services were held in the Bethalto Assembly of God Church with Rev Alex Fergson officiating. The body will be brought to Jersey county for burial in Meadow Branch Cemetery.


GOWINS. Nathan Gowins, 80, died at his home near Grafton. He was born in Tennessee in 1795. He had lived in Jersey county for nearly 50 years. He leaves a numerous family, among them Miner S Gowin, a large farmer and livestock dealer, residing near Morrisonville, IL. Burial was in Wesley Chapel Cemetery south of Otterville.


GOWINS. Paris M Gowins, 80, died at his home near Grafton. His death followed a long illness. Funeral services were held from Grafton ME church. Rev Mr Wright serving. Burial in IOOF cemetery. He leaves 2 Sons, John and Earnest; 2 daughters, Mrs Charles Vanausdoll and Mrs Edgar Wallace, all of Grafton.


GOWLING. Fannie H Gowling, 81, died at the home of her son & Daughter-in-law, Mr & Mrs Lyman Gowling east of Jerseyville. She had been ill for sometime. She was the daughter of the late Cornelius & Catherine (Payne) Corzine and was born in Jersey county, February 12, 1866. Surviving Mrs Gowling are 2 Daughters, Mrs Luella Nowlin of Alton and Miss Clara Gowling of Springfield; 1 son, Lyman L Gowling of Jerseyville; 1 grandson, Jack Nowlin of Bay City, TX, and 2 g-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church, April 15. Rev Dale Harmon officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.


GOWLING. John Gowling, 85, died at the home of his Granddaughter, Mrs Walter McCormack in Venice, IL. Funeral was from the home in Venice and Rev J G Dee officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery, Jerseyville.


GOWLING. Joseph Gowling, died at the home of his niece, Mrs Sarah Magee at Springrfield, IL. He was born at Kirk-By-Thore, England December 15, 1832. He was for many years a resident of Jerseyville and was engaged in merchandising a number of years. He then became a farmer and then retired to a home on Barr Ave. He was a member of the ME church. He was an uncle of George Gowling of Jerseyville. Funeral and burial in Springfield. Interment at Oak Ridge cemetery.


GOWLING. Joseph E Gowling, 89, retired Jersey county farmer, died February 22, at Alton Memorial hospital, he had been a patient for the past month. Mr Gowling was the son of the late John & Georgiana (Darby) Gowling and was born November 10, 1858. He made his home in Jerseyville since retiring from farming. In December the Masonic organization honored him with the 50 year Masonic Jewel. Mr Gowling became affiliated with Charter Oak Lodge, No 236i, AF & AM, on December 6, 1897, and later transferred to the Blue Lodge AF & AM, #394 of Jerseyville. The deceased is survived by his wife, Sarah E Gowling and a number of nieces and nephews. Christian science services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville on February 24. Readers were Miss Thelma Westerhold and Mrs Theo Ryan. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.


GOELING. Lyman L Goeling, 84, of Jerseyville died November 21, 1977 at Jersey County Memorial hospital. He was born June 5, 1893 in Jersey county, a son of George & Fanny (Corzine) Gowling and was a retired farmer. He was a charter member of the Assembly of God church. Surviving are his wife, Pearl (Russell) Gowling; 1 daughter, Mrs Virginia Prosser, Jerseyville; 3 grandchildren, Lyman Fleming and Gene Prosser of Jerseyville and Mrs Lois Call of Mascoutah; 9 g-grandchildren; 5 g-g-grandchildren; 3 step daughters, Mrs Gladys Ames of Peoria and Mrs Opal Priest and Mrs Dorothy Timpe of Jerseyville; 2 stepsons, Lawrence and Walter McGowen of Hardin; and 2 sisters, Mrs Clara Krug of Springfield and Mrs Luella Nowlin of Lake Jackson, TX. His first wife, Nettie Gowling, died in 1967. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville where services were held November 23. Rev Frank Goss officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.

GOWLING. Mrs Nettie V Gowling, 77, died at the family home east of Jerseyville following an extended illness. She was a daughter of the late George & Rose (Bray) White. GOWLING. Pearl M Gowling, 87, of Jerseyville died April 16 at Greenwood Manor nursing home. She was born December 27, 1895 in Kansas, daughter of Ruben & Martha (Hand) Russell. Her husband, Lyman Gowling, died November 21, 1977 and she was also preceded in death by her first husband, Ed McGowen who d January 8, 1962. Surviving are 2 sons, Walter E Mcgowen and Lawrence Mcgowen of Hardin; 3 daughters, Gladys Ames of Peoria, Opal Priest and Dorothy Timpe of Jerseyville; 9 grandchildren; 15 g-grandchildren; 3 g-g-grandchildren. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Funeral service was from Gospel Assembly church April 19 with Rev Clyde Shaw officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.


GOWLING. Thoman Gowling, formerly of Jerseyville and a brother of George Gowling of Jerseyville and Joseph Gowling of Carrollton, died in St. Louis hospital. Remains were taken to Granite City for services, then brought to Jerseyville for burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Rev W S Neely. He had lived in CO for a number of years but had recently been in Granite City and St. Louis.

GRADY. William H “Doc” Grady, 39, of Fieldon, died June 23 at his residence. He was born July 18, 1946, in Illinois to Roy & Freda (Nolan) Grady of Grafton. He worked for Louisiana Dock Cos in Wood River for the past 20 yrs. He married Janet Sue (Schaaf) on March 30, 1974. Survivors are his wife; 1 son, William Frank Grady at home; parents Roy & Freda Grady; 2 brothers, Robert Grady, Jerseyville and Howard Grady of Brighton; and 1 sister Sophia Dowling, Imperial, MO. The funeral was June 26 at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev Simon A Simon officiated and burial was in Fieldon cemetery. Memorials may be given to donor’s choice.


GRAFFORD. Harold Leroy Grafford, 76, of Havana, formerly of Jerseyville, died September 4, 1988, at his residence. He was employed for 26 years by the Caterpiller Mapleton plant, retiring in 1976. Born in Jerseyville, he was the son of Edna Grafford of Jerseyville and the late Elmer Grafford. On July 17, 1935, he married Ruby (Trapp) Grafford and she died February 1, 1975. On July 3, 1976, he married Irma (Brooks) Mcfarlin in Jerseyville and she survives. Surviving are his mother and wife; 2 daughters, Julie Ann Patterson, Muncie, IN and Jeanette Windsor of Havana; 1 son, Keith Douglas Graffort of Lewistown; 1 stepson, Lary Mcfarlin, Havana; 3 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Evelyn Valente, Lake Ville, Mary Lou Snyder and Lola Jean Howland both of Jerseyville and 2 brothers, Francis Grafford, Kane and Elmer Lee Grafford, Charleston, SC. Funeral services were held Wed. at Hurley funeral home in Havana with Rev Rex Beard officiating. Burial was in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Havana.


GRAFFORD. Lester E Grafford, 76, of Smithville, OK, formerly of Alton, died January 27, 1986 at his home. He was born in Jerseyville, son of the late Herbert & Stella (Bley) Grafford. He married Lizzie (Jaco) Grafford in 1942 in Alton. He was a WWII veteran. He leaves his wife and 1 grandchild. Burial was in St. Joseph cemetery in Alton.


GRAFFORD. Pauline J Grafford, was born in Dekalb, IL, as Pauline J Munson. She married Elmer Grafford of Jerseyville on April 6, 1912. She leaves her husband and 2 Children, Harold, 14 and Evelyn 10. She was a member of Jerseyville ME church and Royal Neighbors of America.


GRAFFORD. Walter Grafford, 39, died at the home of his parents, Mr & Mrs John Grafford in Jerseyville. He is survived by his parents, his wife, 3 children, 2 brothers, and 1 sister. Mr Grafford was a carpenter in Granite City. The carpenter’s union of Granite City attended the funeral in a body. The funeral was held at the Baptist church. Rev We Mundell of Arthur, IL, officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.


GRAHAM. John Fred Graham, 88, of Dow, died October 11. He was born in Spring Creek, MO son of Frank & Minnie (Long) Graham. He married Edith (Gray) Graham on March 5, 1921 in Rolla, MO. He leaves his wife, nieces and nephews.


GRAHAM. Lockey Marianne Graham, 53, died at the home of her Brother, James S Blythe, widow of the late James Graham. She was the 5th daughter of Samuel K Blythe, deceased and formerly of Gallatin, Tennessee. She professed a hope in Christ at the age of 14. She was married at 18, to Mr Graham, forming a happy union until his death of Mr Graham in 1856. Since that time she has remained a widow. On the 14th her remains were moved to their last resting place by a large and sorrowing assembly of friends, and deposited in the Jerseyville cemetery. In the loss of this estimable lady, society is called to mourn the loss of one a sincere friend. She was a civil and obliging neighbor, affectionate as a sister, and as a relative kind and sympathizing.


GRAHAM. Mrs Edward Graham died January 6 in the veterans hospital, in Birmingham, AL. The funeral was conducted Jan. 8, in Jackson, AL. She had been a Lt in the Army Nurse Corps in WWII. She was the daughter of the late William & Eliza (Halbert) Mains, formerly of Jersey county. Survivors are 1 sister, Mrs Lucille Robertson, and 1 brother, Ralph Mains of Garnet, KN. Mrs Graham had many relatives and friends in this area.


GRANDSTAFF. William Grandstaff, 61, of Rosedale. Burial in Fieldon cemetery. No children.


GRANDY. Mrs Grandy, 80, of Kane, died at her residence August 17, 1891. Mrs I Grandy, was the widow of Enos Grandy. She was the daughter of William Myrick. She was born February 12, 1812 in Panton, VT, where she grew up and married Enos Grandy. They came to IL in 1833. The arrived at Apple Creek Prairie some time in June of that year and from there they came to the north part of Jersey county, where they remained for a shrot time. They then went to Macoupin county, but only remained there 2-3 years. They then moved to the farm near Kane in the spring of 1837, and she remained there until her death. She had been confined to her home for the last several years. She leaves 1 son and 3 daughters, a large number of grandchildren and g-grandchildren, besides a large circle of friends and acquaintances to mourn her loss.


GRANER. Mrs Jacob Graner, 49, died at her home in this city on Fri. The funeral took place from the Baptist church with Rev J J Potter officiating. She leaves her husband and 7 children.


GARNER. Charles Garner, 71, of Colorado Springs, CO died November 5. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville November 9. Rev F W Schwarzlose, pastor of First Methodist church officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr Garner, a retired farmer, was a former resident of Jersey county. He was a son of the late Jacob & Kanterine (Mills) Garner. His father was a native of Brighton, IL and his mother was born at sea while her parents were enroute to America from Germany. Mr Garner was born March 17, 1882 in Macoupin county, IL. Mr Garner had been a resident of Colorado Springs for the past 23 yrs. Surviving are his wife Flora Bella Garner and 2 sons, Charles and Willam Garner all of Colorado Springs; and 1 daughter Mrs Clara Hughes of CA.


GRANT. Emma N Grant, 93, of Jerseyville, died at Jersey County Memorial hospital. She was born in Rosedale a daughter of the late Charles & Cordelia (Ruckies) Smith and married Frank A Grant, who preceded her in death. Her only survivors were nieces and nephews. Visitation and service were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Leonard Todd and Rev Robert Broeder officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Mausoleum, St. Louis.


GRANT. Mary G Grant, 76, of Alton, former resident of Jersey county, died December 8, at St. Joseph hospital, Alton. Funeral services were held December 13, at Burke funeral home, Alton. Elder Paul Higbey, pastor of Roxana Church of Christ, officiated and burial was in Upper Alton cemetery. Mrs Grant was a daughter of the late Campbell G & Angeline (Williams) Roady. She was born in Jerseyville on December 28, 1877. She had resided in Alton since the early 1900’s. She was the wife of George Grant, who with 3 of her own children preceded her in death. She had been the mother of 4 children and foster mother to 2. Surviving are 1 Son, Otis L Roady of Decatur. The foster children are Harold Fugate of Tulsa, OK, 22 whom Mrs Grant had reared since he was 2 and Ernest Lee Wyatt of Alton, 11 who was at the Grant home since he was 2 months. A granddaughter, Mrs Mary Ehlers, Godfrey came to live with her grandmother at the age of 9 months. Also surviving are 1 brother, Elder J C Roady, Evangelist of the Church of Christ at Sullivan, IN; 3 sisters, Mrs George Downs of Jerseyville, Mrs Roy Lawrence of Bethalto and Mrs Charles Daniels Sr. of Alton, 34 grandchildren and 57 g-grandchildren.


GRAVES. Christopher Columbus Graves, 100, died early Wed. at his home in Granite City. He was born in Tennessee when it was yet a territory and owned by an inheritance from his father, the preemptor, the first ground homestead by government after the Indian Lands in Tennessee were bought and the inhabitants moved to the Indian Territory. He had been a soldier in some of the early Indian wars. Mr Graves life was an active one, having lived most of his life in 3 states; Tennessee, Arkansas and Illinois. He followed no other vocation than farming. He was not an abstainer but observed temperate rules of living. He survived both of his parents, his first wife and all but 1 of the children of his marriage, Napoleon Bonaparte Graves, 80, of Memphis, TN. He lived in the co ???, in TN where he was born until after his 2nd marriage. The then moved to a farm in Boone county, Arkansas. He came to IL in 1900.


GRAVES. Esther Graves, 53, former Jerseyville resident died at a Granite City hospital on September 22. Funeral services were from Mercer funeral home in Granite City. Rev Bulatsi officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs Graves resided with her Daughter, Mrs Ben Cooper in Granite City. She was born in Orchard, NE May 21, 1921. She was married to Odin Medford School (Scholl ?) when she resided in Jerseyville, where they reared their family. Surviving are 1 son, William Scholl, Pery, MO; 4 daughters, Mrs Martin (Ann) Klocz of Indiana, Mrs Tom (Betty) Hillig, of Tapin; Mrs Ben (Rosemary) Cooper, Granite City, and Mrs Roger (Patsy) Ruchalo of Kensly Park; 1 brother, Howard Borcherding of Jacksonville and 7 grandchildren.

She was born March 6, 1893 in Brussels a daughter of Theodore & Elizabeth (Carey) Schobernd. Her was the late John G Gray. She is survived by 2 sons, Oliver of Godfrey and John of Jerseyville; 2 daughters, Mrs Virginia Poppe of Jerseyville and Mrs Louella Warner of Clearwater, FL; 12 grandchildren; 3 g-grandchildren; and 1 sister, Mrs Catherine Goetten. Her husband and 1 son preceded her in death. Visitation was from Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville.


GRAY. Christine Gray, 90, died March 18 at a St. Louis nursing home. Services were conducted at first Presbyterian church with Rev M. Edwards Breed officiating. She was a life long member of that church. Her husband was the late Warred Gray. Her only survivors are nieces and nephews. Visitation was at the church.


GRAY. Ed Gray, printer for Jersey County Democrat, died at his home. There to be no relatives on this side of the Atlantic and none are known to be living on the other side. He left England when 14. In 1883 he returned to England, after an absence of 32 years, to see his father, then living where Ed was born, Yorkshire, England, November 23, 1836. Mr Gray at the age of 14, worked on a farm at Chesterfield, owned by George Halliday. He was taken into the business of the Spectator (News) at Carlinville to learn printer’s trade. In 1861, he bought the Spectator. In 1869 he moved to Litchfield with the Monitor. Hillsboro news letter and then to Jerseyville in 1877 and worked for Birdsall & McGready, editors of the Democrat. Foreman of the paper since. Funeral from the home of Joseph Martston. Rev Ira Tyson. GRAY. Ethel M Gray, 95, of Marshalltown, IA, former Jerseyville resident, died July 17, 1988 at Grandview Heights Nursing Home. Services were held July 19, at St. Mary Catholic Church with Fr John Hargrafef officiating. Burial was at Maple Grove Cemetery, near Melbourne. She was born June 15, 1893, in Story CO to Joseph V & Minnie (King) Richey. She was reared and educated in Story CO, and lived in Denver, CO and Spencer before coming to Marshalltown in 1965. She was first married to Dennis Moroney, and later married John Gray. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Altar & Rosary Society. Mrs Gray was preceded in death by her 2 husbands, 2 children and 1 brother. Surviving are 1 brother, Vincent Richey; 6 sisters, Nell Gowin, Loretta Doerr, Helen Stocker, Ann Ossburn and Iva Osburn, all of IL, and Alice Parton of Georgia, and several nieces and nephews. Mr & Mrs Clarence Osburn of Grafton attended the funeral.


GRAY. Evelyn Gray, 56, of Eldred died January 7, at Boyd Memorial hospital, Carrollton. Services were held at Hires funeral home, Carrollton on January 9. A native of Eldred, she was the daughter of Mrs Goldie (Varble) Borman of Jerseyville and the late Harry Borman. Her husband, Donald K Gray, d in 1955. In addition to her mother she is survived by 2 Sisters, Mrs John (Marjorie) Perry, St. Louis and Mrs Elmer (Mary) Howell, Jerseyville. Burial was in the National cemetery in Alton.


GRAY. Harriet “Hattie” Gray, 71, died October 24 at Jersey County Memorial hospital where she had been a patient for 5 days. Funeral service were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev W Louis Purcell, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. She was a daughter of the late James & Emma (Hoover) Blay and was born in Jerseyville August 25, 1895. She was a member of Royal Neighbors of America. Surviving her are her husband; 2 daughters, Mrs David Murray of Jerseyville and Mrs Clyde Foster of East Alton; 1 son, Stuart Snyder of Jerseyville; 1 step daughter, Mrs Leo Cummings, Jerseyville; 1 sister, Mrs Stella Grafford, Jerseyville; 9 grandchildren, 2 g-grandchildren; and 2 step g-granddaughters. Her parents, 4 sister, and 1 brother preceded her in death.


GRAY. Lettie Gray, 84, of Boulder, CO, formerly of Jersey county, died July 8, in Boulder. Cremation followed. She was born in Jersey county, daughter of the Late Asbury & Alice (Hobbs) Hart. She married Owen Etter and then married Arthur Gray, who preceded her in death. She served as postmaster in Black Hawk, CO, for several years. Surviving are 2 sons, Milton Etter of Boulder, CO and Marvin Etter of Aurora CO; 1 daughter, Jewel (Etter) Pipes of Arvada, CO; several grandchildren and g-grandchildren; 1 brother, Elmer Hart of Hartford. Memorial services were held in Boulder. Her brother officiated at the memorial service at Meadow Branch cemetery, 5 miles northwest of Grafton where the cremains were interred. Memorials may be given to charity of choice.


GRAY. Lora B Gray, 85, died August 25, 1990, at Jersey County Memorial hospital. Born in Hamburg, she was the daughter of the late George Albert & Bessie Beatrice (Howland) Booth. She married Estes Gray on June 15, 1929, in Mosier. He died January 17, 1970. Surviving are 2 sisters, Dorothy Utely of Jerseyville and Alma Henry of Pleasant Hill. Preceding her in death were 2 sisters, Ora Handling and Hattie Schumann and 2 brothers, Albert and Earl Booth. Visitation was from Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Services were held at Gospel Assembly church, Jerseyville. Rev Clylde Shaw officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church where she was a member.

GREANY. Michael Greany, former resident of Jerseyville died at home in Delaware City, DE. Cousin of Michael Greany and Mrs Mary Schermerhorn of Jerseyville. Following residence in Jerseyville the deceased moved to Virden where he lived for a time prior to his going to Delaware. 7 years ago he left Virden and went to Ireland where he was for 1 year. He returned to America and remained in the east. He was a member of Hickory Grove Camp, No 442, Modern Woodsman of America at Jerseyville.

Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey. Mr Greeling, a former resident of Godfrey and Dorsey areas, was a retired farmer. He had been in failing health for some time. He was born and reared in Jersey county. He was born April 16, 1929 in Godfrey, son of Lawrence W & Alice (Pegue) Greeling. He was a blacksmith by trade. GREEN. Adrian E “Bill” Green Jr, 57, of Jerseyville, died November 22 in the emergency room of Jersey County Memorial hospital. He had been ill for some time. The WWII veteran was a welder at Mcdonnill Douglas in St. Louis. Born January 11, 1924 in Jerseyville, he was a son of Adrian Green Sr & and the late Marguerite (Kappel) Green. He is survived by his wife, Leona (Heitzig) Green whom he married February 123, 1947 at St. Mary Westwoods; 3 sons, Mike, Bill, and Tom Green, Jerseyville; 2 daughters, Mary Kay Allen, Jerseyville and Barb Olmstead, Dow; 5 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and 1 sister, Rosemary Kadell. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Funeral mass was celebrated at St. Francis church by Fr Patrick Morrow. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery. Mr green was the ag teacher at Jersey township high school for several years, but of late had been district representative of the Illinois ag ins. assn. for the northern part of IL. GREEN. George Wesley Green, 73, retired shoe repairman of Jerseyville, d. July 24, at Alton Memorial hospital. He had been a patient 6 days. Mr Green was a son of the late Lewis & Rhoda (Cope) Green and was born in Jersey county on June 30, 1884. Surviving are 2 sons, Everett W Green, Alton and George L Green of Kansas City, KS; 3 daughters, Mrs Ralph (Frances) Wood, Mrs Dayle (Leah) Busch and Mrs Randolph (Helen) Jett of Alton; 16 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Elmer Green, Columbia, MO; 1 sister, Mrs Flora Watts of Alton. GREEN. Lloyd Louis Green, 71, d. October 17, 1990, at Jersey County Memorial hospital. He retired in 1981, after 27 years service as a lineman at MJM electric co-op, and was a US army WWII veteran. Born in Starkweather, ND, he was the son of the late Lloyd E & Esther Clio (Bradley) Green. April 13, 1946, in Jerseyville, he married Phyllis (Weller) Green. She d. May 3, 1979. On June 22, 1982, he married June F Bierbaum in Las Vegas, NV, and she survives. Also surviving are 2 daughters, Lois “Sally” Richardson of Kane and Betty O’dell of Bethalto; 4 sons, Richard Green of Paris, IL, Donald, Jack and Kenneth Green, all of Jerseyville; 1 step daughter, Karen Hogan of St. Louis and 1 step son, Alvin Nenninger of St. Louis; 3 grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren; 1 brother, Robert Green of Jerseyville; and 2 sisters, Hazel Isringhausen of Jerseyville and Flora Clark, Gillespie. 1 sister, Blanche Cummings, preceded him in death. He had suffered a heart attack before being moved to the hospital. He was a son of the late Mr & Mrs John Wesley Green and was born in Jersey county on May 28, 1879. GREENE. Addison Greene, settled at Jersey Landing, Jersey county, 1847. 5 years later he went to Mississippi township where he has since resided until his death. Born in Jefferson county, NY on June 21, 1819. In 1834 he went to MO, where he remained 3 years, then returned to Ohio, his parents having moved to that state. 18 months later he came to IL and located in Madison county. He remained there about 15 months then went to Quincy till 1844; then back to Madison county for 3 years, then to Jersey Landing, Jersey county. He married to Amanda (Holt) Greene in 1838 in Scott county. Mr Greene’s marriage license was the first marriage license was the first one ever issued in that county. They were parents of 12 children; Henrietta, born July 3, 1840 – d. June 1845; John P born August 23, 1841 – d. June 1845; Amanda born 1843 – d. 1845, Fufus A born March 1845 – d. GREENE. Alvina C Greene, 96, d. August 7 at Weiss hospital, Chicago. Final rites were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev William Schmidt of Kampsville, officiated. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. She was born in Jerseyville, January 16, 1880, the daughter of Henry & Catherine (Fuester) Bayer. Survivors are nieces and nephews only.


GREENE. Mrs Amanda Greene, 88, d. widow of Addison Greene, died at her home in Mississippi township, February 17. Mrs Greene had been a resident of Jersey county since 1847. She was the mother of 12 children, only 3 Surviving; Mrs J W Morrill, of Kansas, Mrs A B McCauley of Dow and Nathaniel of St. Louis. Rev J R Slaten officiated at funeral rites held in her home near Dow.


GREENE. Amanda Greene, was born Amanda Holt in Mineral Township, Venango County, PA, November 9, 1819. She married Addison Greene April 15, 1839. They came to Jersey county, IL in October 1847 and lived in this county until her death February 17, 1908. She leaves 1 son, 2 daughters. Funeral from old home. Burial in Newbern cemetery. GREENE. Col. Ben Greene, one of Jerseyville’s oldest residents, died at Fidelity, Sunday August 7, 1887. He left here Friday on the St. Louis & A & SRR and was seen walking into Fidelity from the depot and looking quite unwell. The citizens of Fidelity took good care of him during his last hours. Burial was in Oakland cemetery north of Fidelity.

GREENE. Clyde Greene, 69, d. in Denver, CO after undergoing major surgery. He was a resident of Kane until a few years ago when he went to CO for health reasons. After going to CO, he married and the couple resided in Fowler. He was a member of the Kane Baptist church until transferring his letter to the Fowler church. He was a son of the late Hardin & Maria Greene of Kane. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brother, Gus and Frank Greene; and 3 sisters, Misses Lela and Lora Greene and Mrs Ruth Eldred. Surviving in addition to his wife are 1 sister, Mrs Mary Terry of Jerseyville and 5 nephews, Warren and Roland Greene of Kane, John Greene of Petersburg, Clifford Greene of – incomplete


GREENE. John Hardin Greene, 80, former Jerseyville resident d. September 4, 1990 at Methodist medical center, Peoria. Greene had been a school teacher for 35 years. He retired in 1976 from Bloomington Jr high school, and had formerly taught in Jersey County Unit Dist 100. He was a member of Kane Masonic Lodge #197. Born in Kane, he was the son of the Late Frank & Mary Elizabeth (Rue) Greene. On September 4, 1935, he married Vesta E (White) Greene in St. Louis, MO. She d. November 20, 1989. Surviving are 2 Daughters, Joyce Best and Mary Weber, both of Peoria; 6 grandchildren; 3 g-grandchildren; and 1 brother, Roland Greene of Jerseyville. 1 son, Franklin Greene; and 1 brother, Warren Greene, preceded him in death. Visitation was at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev Jean Erb officiated at the service. Burial was in Kane cemetery. Memorials may be given to American Cancer Society.


GREENE. Joseph R Greene, 54, of R1 Kane, d. June 3, 1988, at Jersey County Memorial hospital. He was born February 22, 1934, in Jerseyville to the Late Warren & Mary Elizabeth (Knight) Greene. He married Marion Frances (Loellke) December 10, 1961, in Jerseyville. He was a member of Kane Masonci Lodge, #197 and Elizabeth Chapter Eastern Star #17, Kane. Survivors include his wife, Marion; 1 son, Floyd N Greene, Kane and 2 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. The funeral was June 5 at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Bro Allen Camp officiated and burial was in Kane cemetery. Memorials may be given to Champaign Children’s Home.

GREENE. Maria Greene, 80, aged Greene county pioneer, died at her home near Kane. Funeral was held at her home with Rev S L Buchanan. Burial was in Kane cemetery. She was born in old Kane and lived all her life in Greene county. She was the daughter of Samuel & Mary (Gaddis) Pope, who were pioneer settlers in IL. She was the youngest of 11 children and the last one of them. She married John Hardin Greene in 1868. They were parents of 11 children, her husband and 6 of the children preceded her in death. 3 sons, Gustin, Frank and Clyde all of Kane; 2 daughters, Lela of Kane and Mrs Charles H Terry of Jerseyville; 5 grandchildren and 1 g-grandchild. She was a member of Kane Baptist church.


GREENE. Vesta W Greene, 73, a resident of Washington Christian Village , d. November 20, 1898, at St. Francis hospital in Peoria. Born in Jersey county, she was a daughter of the late George Leslie & Eva Edith (Hills) White. On September 4, 1935, she married John Hardin Greene, and he survives. Also surviving are 2 daughters, Joyce Best of Peoria and Mary Weber of Pekin; 6 grandchildren; 2 g-grandchildren; and 1 sister, Helen Fraley of Jerseyville. She was preceded in death by 1 son, Franklin Greene. Visitation was at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Burial in Kane cemetery. Memorials may be given to American Lung Assn.


GREENE. Warren Rue Greene, 61, of Kane suffered a fatal heart attack at his home. He was rushed to the hospital, to no avail. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville where Masonic rites were conducted by King Solomon Lodge, #197, of Kane. Rev Jack Brown, pastor of the Baptist church in Kane, officiated and burial was in Kane cemetery. Mr Greene was a member of the faculty at Jersey County high for nearly 20 years before becoming ill in the spring of 1966 and was founder of the science club for Unit 100 schools. Mr Greene, a member of one of the prominent older families of the Kane area, and was born in Kane, a son of the late Franklin W & Mary (Rue) Greene. He received his elementary education in the Kane school and was later graduated from Jersey Township high. In 1928, he graduated from isn at Normal and his first year of teaching was at Rock Bridge. He also taught at Shawneetown, rural Jersey county schools, and Wrights. Mr Greene was principal at Manchester and Eldred before joining the Jersey Township high faculty in 1947. He became head of the science dept and was instrumental in forming and developing the science club, not only for high school students but for students at all levels in the Unit 100 system. In the course of years many of the local exhibits have gone on to achieve recognition in other fairs including the St. Louis greater science fair which attracts students from area schools. Surviving are his wife, Mary Greene, a teacher at Kane Elementary; 1 son, Joseph R Greene of Kane; 2 brothers, John H Greene of Bloomington and Roland P Greene of Kane. He was a member of King Solomon Lodge and Elizabeth Chapter Order Eastern Star of Kane.


GREENWALT. Ed Greenwalt, 88, a retired farmer R1, Jerseyville, died at his home in Mississippi township on February 6. Final rites were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev James Pepper officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He was born November 29, 1884 in Manchester a son of Charles & Ella (Neal) Greenwalt. He was a member of Jersey county farm bureau. He is survived by 1 daughter, Mrs Fred (Lucille) Mcfain of Jerseyville. His wife, 2 sons, parents, 1 brother and 1 sister preceded him in death.


GREENWOOD. Agness Louse ?? Greenwood, 72, of East Alton d. January 30 at St. Louis U hospital, St. Louis following a lengthy illness. Funeral mass was celebrated at St. Matthew Catholic Church with Fr David Schmidt as celebrant. Burial was in St. Frances cemetery, Jerseyville. She was born in St. Louis, daughter of the late Henry H & Mary (Schroeder) Roewe. She was a billing clerk for Laclede Steel Co. in Alton for 30 years before retiring in 1962. Surviving are 1 daughter, Mary Damron of Alton; 1 son, Donald Calvey of East Alton; 5 grandchildren; 1 g-grandchild; 3 sisters, Dorothy Deshaiser and Marie Roewe of Kane and Helen Cox of White Hall.


GREENWOOD. Grace Greenwood, 73, d. March 7 at Jersey County Memorial hospital. Final services were from Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev Kenneth Workman officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. She had resided at Stark Sheltered Care Home for 18 years. Mrs Pauline Stark was her guardian. She was born in Rome, AL, November 21, 1901 and has no known survivors.


GRESHAM. Grant Henry “Frog” Gresham, 76, d. September 8, 1991, at Jersey Care Center. Gresham was a US navy veteran; retiring in 1979 as a machinist from Rotary Ram of Godfrey. He was a member of Jerseyville Moose and Eagles Lodges, K of C and American Legion Post 492. He was born in Batchtown on March 29, 1915, son of the late Grant Gresham & Caroline “Carrie” (Herter) Gresham Mcdonald. On January 4, 1969, in Alton, he Married Sandra (Bowman) Gresham. She d. January 17, 1988. Surviving are 2 sons, Sidney Gresham, Jerseyville and Grant Gresham at Home; 5 daughters, Adelma Dahlheimer, Las Vegas, NV, Delores Hermes of Maine, Judy Beckham of Jerseyville, Carrie Kallal of Jerseyville and Annie Gresham at home; 12 grandchildren; and 1 sister, Sally Narup of Batchtown. 2 brothers, Carl and Leon Dixon, preceded him in death. Visitation was at Jacoby-schroeder Funeral Home in Jerseyville, with Rev William Hembrow as celebrant. Military rites were conducted at Oak Grove cemetery by American Legion Post #4528. Mr Grether was born and reared in Jersey county. He had been employed as a mill operator in CA. GRIESEMER. Alma Griesemer, 87, formerly of Rosedale, d. August 19, at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville. Born in Rosedale March 6, 1904, she as the daughter of the late Robert E & Alice E (Matthews) Ridenour. On January 30, 1924, she married Clarence Edwin Griesmer in Rosedale. He d. September 11, 1976. Surviving are 3 sons, Robert Edwin, Godfrey, Clarence Wilbur of Lincoln, CA, and Herbert E Griesemer of Cadiz, KY; 12 grandchildren and 22 g-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were 1 son, Charles Paul Griesemer; 5 sisters, Ollie Onits, Lula E Warren, Myrtle Armstrong and Blanch and Beulah Ridenour; and 3 brothers, Frederick S, Thomas Levi and Elmer Ridenour. GRIESEMER. Clarence Edwin Griesemer, 71, of R1 Grafton was found dead at his farm home Sat. He suffered an apparent heart attack and fell from the tractor he was riding. He was found lying beside the tractor which had gone down an embankment and caught on some trees and was still running, according to coroner’s report. He was born at Cowling, son of Charles William & Grace (Siebert) Griesemer on October 14, 1904. He married Alma (Ridenour) Griesemer on January 30, 1924. She survives, as do 3 sons, Robert Edwin of Godfrey, Clarence Wilbur, of Lincoln, CA and Herbert of Kankakee; 12 grandchildren and 9 g-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 1 son, Charles Paul, in 1968. Visitation was from Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev Robert Patterson of United Methodist church Grafton officiated. Burial in Rosedale cemetery. He was a member of Fieldon Masonic Lodge 592.


GRIESMER. Paul Griesmer, 31, of Bluffs, formerly of Jersey county, died at Depaul hospital in St. Louis where he had undergone major surgery. Funeral services were held at First Methodist church. Rev R D. Goldsborough of Bluffs and Rev W Louis Purcell of Jerseyville officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Visitation was at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. He was a son of Clarence & Alma (Ridenour) Griesemer, the young father and husband was born July 16, 1937 at Rosedale. He graduated from Jersey County high in 1955 and for several years was Assistant Highway Engineer in Jersey county. Last fall he had accepted a position as Superintendent of Construction for the Fresen Brother Co. and had moved to Bluffs to reside. He is survived by his wife, Janet Griesemer and 1 son 6 year old Bruce, of Bluffs; his parents of Grafton; 3 brothers, Edwin of Jerseyville, Herb, Jerseyville and Wilbur of Lincoln, CA.


GRIFFEN. Isa O Griffen, 62, of R1 Kane, d. March 12, at Boyd Memorial hospital, Carrollton. Services were held at the Church of Christ with Rev Jack Phillips and Rev Charles Scoggins officiating. Burial was in Poore Cemetery, Mozier. She was born in Hamburg June 7, 1914 a daughter of Homer & Dallas (Higham) Charlton. She was an employee of the former International Shoe company. She is survived by 1 son, Ernest Turner of Silvis; 2 daughters, Mrs Thomas Burch and Mrs Melvin Surratt, both of Jerseyville; 4 sisters, Mrs Tracy Wilson, Silvis, Mrs Lula Smith of Linden, AL, Mrs Harold Cravens of Modesto and Mrs Pearl Felter, Alpha; 14 grandchildren; and 2 g-grandchildren. She was born June 30, 1963 in Jerseyville and was a student at Jersey County high school. Surviving are her parents; 2 brothers, Ronald and David Griffen of Fieldon; 1 sister, Mrs Virginia Ward of Jerseyville; and grandparents Mr & Mrs Joe Coleman and Mrs Gertrude Talley of Jerseyville. GRIFFIN. Emmet F “Butch” Griffin, 83, d. December 26, 1990 at Jersey County Memorial hospital. He retired in 1969 as a self employed retail grocer in the Jerseyville area and was WWII veteran. He was a member of the Jerseyville American Legion. Born in Mexico, MO, he was the son of the late Jesse D. & Nancy (Thorp) Griffin. He married Alma C (Halley) on September 18, 1927, in St. Louis and she d. January 8o, 1961. Surviving are 1 son, Floyd Russell Griffin of Macon, MO; 3 daughters, Alma “Peg” Phelan of Bunker Hill and Nancy “Susie” Wayman and Carole “Mickey” Schroeder, both of Jerseyville; 9 grandchildren; 9 g-grandchildren; 7 step grandchildren; and 1 sister, Zada Mcdonald of Florissant, MO. Visitation was at Jacoby-Schroeder funeral home in Jerseyville, where services were also held. Rev Grant Jensen officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. GRIFFIN. Fr Eugene F Griffin, 54, died at St. Francis hospital in Litchfield where he had been a patient for 1 month. He had been ill for some time. The Most Rev William O’connor, Bishop of the Springfield Catholic Diocese, concelebrated the mass with priests of the diocese in St. Michael church, Staunton. The 4th Degree K of C Assembly formed an honor guard and maintained a vigil through the hours the body lay in state in the Staunton church where he had been pastor for the past 4 years. After the service the body was moved to Chicago where another service was held at Holy Rosary Church. Burial was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Chicago. Fr Griffin was well known in Jerseyville where he served as assistant pastor undr the late Fr John J Clancy from 1947-1953. From here he was assigned to the pastorate of St. Luke Church in Virginia and later St. Anselm Church, Kampsville. He was born and educated in Chicago where he was graduated from the Quigley high school. His preparations for the priesthood and his first assignment was as assistant pastor at Sacred Heart Church in Springfield. He was ordained in Springfield in 1943. Surviving are 3 brothers and 1 sister, all of Chicago.


GRIFFITH. Joseph H Griffith, Sr, 91, d. April 1, at Jersey County Memorial hospital. Born in Mount Vernon, he was a son of the late Jacob & Ida (Keller) Griffith. He first married Lucy Berline on December 17, 1917, in Bowling Green, MO, she d. May 11, 1962. He later married the former Edith Ludwick and she also preceded him in death. Surviving are 1 daughter, Lois Coleman of Jerseyville; 1 step daughter, Nadine Keller of Roodhouse; 4 sons, Don of Carrollton, Max of Jerseyville, Joseph of Palmyra and G B Griffith of Baton Rouge, LA; 11 grandchildren; 14 g-grandchildren; and 1 sister, Mattie Elliot of Fontana, CA. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters and 1 brother. Visitation was at Airsman-Hires funeral home Carrollton, where services were held with Rev Dan Wright officiating. GRIFFITH. Lucy Ann Griffith, 61, of Carrollton, died at Boyd Memorial hospital. She had entered the hospital for tests and was planning on returning home. Friday am she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and death occurred thereafter. Services were held at Mehl funeral home in Carrollton. Rev John Finnan, Pastor of Eldred Baptist church, officiated and burial was in White Hall cemetery. She was a daughter of the late Georte & Addie (Paire) Berline, and she was born near White Hall March 12, 1901. She married Joseph Griffith December 17, 1917, and they spent their lives in Jersey & Greene counties. Surviving are her husband; 1 daughter, Mrs Lois Cooke of Jerseyville; 4 sons, Donald and George B of Carrollton; Joseph Jr of Palmyra and Max of Jerseyville; 9 grandchildren; and 1 half brother, Lee Berline of Borne, TX.

GRIFFIN. Esther Griffin, 83, d. February 28, 1898, at Jersey County Memorial hospital. She had been a seamstress for Curlee Clothing Co. in St. Louis for more than 40 yrs. Born in Grafton, her parents were the late Edward & Emma (Green) Dowdall. Surviving are 1 daughter, Margaret Shearer of Creve Coeur, MO; 1 grandchild and 2 g-grandchildren. Visitation was at Grafton Methodist church. Services were held there with Rev Dale Wilfong officiating. Burial was in Scenic Hill cemetery. Memorials may be given to her church. GRIGGS. Edward D. Griggs, 64, died at his home on Barr Ave. Born 1 mile south of Delhi on February 2, 1853. He married Lena (Erhardt) in October 1883. They moved to Jerseyville, where he engaged in several lines of business: reporter for the Republican, with S H Bowman Ins. for a while. Known as “Commodore” by members of the fishing club. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Elks, and Modern Woodsman. He leaves his widow; 2 brothers, Samuel of Mcalester, OK, Ahd Jeron(m)e, of Durango, CO. Funeral from Baptist church, Rev Jenkins. Burial in Oak Grove mausoleum.


GRIMES. Mrs Edward Grimes, sister-in-law of Misses Isabelle and Flora Grimes of Jerseyville, d. recently at her home near Raymond, IL. She is survived by her husband and 1 son, Ernest. The funeral was held at family home at Raymond. Miss Flora Grimes went there for the funeral and a visit with her brother.

GRIMES. Isabelle Grimes, 76, daughter of Jarrett T & Charity (Brown) Grimes, died at the family home 2 miles west of Jerseyville. Her father was the first white man born in what was later to become Jersey county.


GRIMES. James Grimes, 68, son of venerable 94 yr old J T Grimes, was found dead in the barn. Dr H R Gledhill, the family doctor, was summoned and pronounced him dead. Dr N F Bray, the coroner, called a jury which returned the verdict: death due to apoplexy. Funeral by Rev J R Reynolds with burial in Grimes cemetery. He leaves his father, 1 brother Edward Grimes of Raymond, IL; and 3 sisters, Mrs Mary Hartwick of Raymond, Misses Flora and Isabelle Grimes of Jerseyville.


GRIMES. Jarrett Trammel Grimes, 95, was born January 20, 1820 son of Philip & Polly Grimes. He was 1 of 10 children all of whom are now dead. Phillip Grimes a native of Oldtown, VA, was in the war of 1812 and in the battle of New Orleans under Ben Andrew Jackson. He was discharged July 17, 1815. His mother Polly Boyd Grimes, a native of TN, was of french descent. Jarrett’s parents came to IL in 1816, settling near Upper Alton in Madison county. Two years later they moved to a farm 5 1/2 miles northwest of Jerseyville where he was born. He went to pioneer schools. Married Charity (Brown) Grimes November 29, 1838. She was a native of St. Charles county, MO. They were also parents of 10 children, 4 living; 10 grandchildren; 15 g-grandchildren and 4 g-g-grandchildren. His wife d. in 1876. The death of his son James, November 1914, was a hard blow to him. He leaves Miss Isabel and Florence at home; Mrs Mary Hartwick and Edward Grimes of Montgomery Co. Miss Gertrude Grimes daughter of the late Phillip Grimes, the eldest child of Mr & Mrs J T Grimes, who also resides in the home. He was made a Master Mason March 3, 1869, and Royal Arch Mason December 12, 1871. He was a member of the Baptist church. The county loses its oldest citizen with the death of Jarrett Grimes. Burial was in Grimes cemetery near his home.


GRISWOLD. Curtis H Griswold of White Hall, father of Mrs William F Brockman of Jerseyville, d. September 5 at White Hall hospital. Final rites were held September 7, at Dawdy-Wolfe-Airsman funeral home in White Hall. Burial was in White Hall cemetery. He was one of the last master plumbers practicing in IL, and was past organizing president of the West Central IL Plumbers Assn. An elder in the Presbyterian church, he was a member of the Lions Club with a 36 year perfect attendance record, and the Masonic Lodge. Surviving are his widow, Geneve (Strang) Griswold; 1 Daughter, Mrs Brockman; 1 son, John C Griswold of White Hall; 4 grandchildren; and 1 sister, Mrs K O Hoffaman of N Baltimore, OH.


GRISWOLD. Geneve Griswold of White Hall, was buried in White Hall cemetery. The mother of Sarah Brockman of Jerseyville, was at Airsman funeral home where services were held. She was born in Greenfield November 18, 1902, daughter of Howard E & Ethel (Weisner) Strang. She married Curtis Harvey Griswold March 1, 1928. He preceded her in death. She leaves 2 children, Sarah Brockman and John Curtis who is married to the former Billye Obst, 4 grandchildren; 6 g-grandchildren; 3 sister, Florence Griswold of Whitehall, Marjean Shirley of Norman and Mary Clover Langdon of Murrayville; and 1 brother, William H Strang.


GRISWOLD. George Lucius Griswold 22, died at Brighton.


GRISWOLD. John P Griswold, 72, died at his home in Fidelity on March 11. He was son of Nathaniel & Emma Griswold and was born in Greene county, January 18, 1849. He married Mary C (Pickrell) of Rockbridge on September 12, 1886. Surviving are 2 children Warren Griswold of Fidelity and Lloyd Griswold of Akron, OH.


GRISWOLD. Warren “Bottles” Griswold, 59, well known resident of the Fidelity vicinity, was found at his home on August 10. Jerry hogan who found Mr Griswold, testified that he went to Griswold’s home on Sunday am and when he was unable to waken Mr Griswold by noise he went to the bed and shook him. He saw then that he was dead and he went to the home of John Lutz, who notified coroner Jacoby. Mr lutz reported that he had seen Griswold mowing his lawn Sat. Cause of death was given as probable coronary thrombosis. Mr Griswold was born in Jersey county October 25, 1892, a son of the late John P & Mary C (Pickerel) Griswold. He was employed as an iron worker in the construction business. He was a WWI veteran. His only immediate survivor is Lloyd Griswold of Jerseyville. He was a member of Jerseyville Elks Lodge, American Legion and Jersey-Calhoun Voiture 40 & 8. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev La Verne Poole, pastor of First Baptist church, officiated and interment was in Oakland cemetery, Ruyle township.


GRIZZLE. Adam J Grizzle, 86, formerly of Jersey county, d. September 20 at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville following a lengthy illness. He was a retired farmer, born in Jersey county, his parents were the late Adam Eli & Mary E (Stewart) Grizzle. His wife, Catherine E (Craig) Grizzle, d. October 30, 1976. Surviving are 3 sisters, Lucy M Hardwick of Carrollton, Tossie L Hildred of Jerseyville and Eathel B Greenwood of Kane; and 4 brothers, J R Grizzle of Eldred and D. C “Joe” , Paul and H E “Doc” Grizzle all of Carrollton. 3 brothers, Cl Cc and Frank A Grizzle all preceded him in death. Visitation was at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Services were held there by Rev Frank Marshall. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Memorials may be given to Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children, St. Louis.


GRIZZLE. Catherine E Grizzle, 73, of RR Nebo, d. pxct 30 at Pittsfield nursing home. She was born October 9, 1903 a daughter of Garret S & Emma (Rotergers) Craig. She is survived by her husband, Adam J Grizzle; 1 brother, Henry Craig of Jerseyville and 2 sister, Mrs Gilbert (Myrtle) Madison of San Diego, CA and Mrs Annie Bean of Godfrey. Visitation was held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral services were held there by Rev L E Hutchinson of State Street Baptist church. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.


GRIZZLE. Chester Calvin Grizzle, 85, of R 2 Jerseyville, d. July 4, 1981 at Calhoun care center. The retired farmer was born January 3, 1896 in Reene CO, a son of the late Adam & Mary (Stewart) Grizzle. His wife, Rosa (Hyde) Grizzle d. in March 1980. Surviving are, 3 sons, Chester A and Harold E of Jerseyville, Walter Dale, Hartford; 2 daughters, Doris Cunningham of Grafton and Theda Jonds, Medora; 5 brothers, Dc “Joe”, Ray, Paul and Harry E “Doc” all of Carrollton and Adam Grizzle, Jr, of Pearl; 3 sisters, Tossie Hildred, Eathel Greenwood and Marie Hardwick of Kane; 20 grandchildren and 26 g-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Rosemary Chapman, and 2 brothers. Visitation and funeral were at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Burial was in Mt Gilead cemetery near Carrollton. GUIZZLE. Christopher Columbus Guizzle, 83, a resident of Jersey county for many years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs James Cunningham. He was born in Jersey county and spent his entire life here. He leaves 89 decedents, 7 children, 39 grandchildren and 42 g-grandchildren. His wife d. a number of years ago. GRIZZLE. Freeman J Grizzle, 71, died at Barnes hospital, St. Louis. He was born in Jersey county, son of the late John Monroe & Sarah (Mains) Grizzle. He was a commercial welder by trade. He married Rabia (Bishop) Grizzle May 12, 1937. Surviving are his wife and 1 sister, Elsie Pruitt of Kane. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. GRIZZLE. Grace D. Grizzle, 87, of Jerseyville d. April 10, at St. Joseph hospital, Alton. She was a home maker, former cook at a local restaurant, and a former nurse’s aide at a local nursing home. She was born February 18, 1902 in Calhoun county to Henry & Caroline (Valkart) Depper. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church, Jerseyville and Women of the Moose Lodge 695. In April 1920, she married Charles Humiston, who d. April 28, 1964. On January 30, 1949, in Jerseyville, she married George R Grizzle who d. February 14, 1986. Surviving are 2 daughter, Juanita Dabbs, Jerseyville and Florence Humiston, Payson, AZ; 1 son, Darrell Humiston, Scottsdale, AZ; 17 grandchildren; 11 g-grandchildren- 1 g-g-grandchild; and 1 sister, Alice Williams of Rockbridge. She was preceded in death by 1 son, Francis Humiston; 1 sister Betha Zimmerman; 4 brothers, Roy, Ben, Henry and Edward Depper. FuneralServices were held April 13 at Assembly of God Church. GRIZZLE. James Grizzle, 81, who was one of the oldest and highly respected citizens of this community, died at his home in this city, (Lawson, MO) on January 1, 1908. He had been ill less than 1 week. Born in IL. In 1826, he was a Mexican war veteran, joining the army when a mere boy. He was with Zachary Taylor at Montery and some hard services was seen during that struggle. After the close of the war he engaged in farming and at about 25 years, he moved to this community, where he lived until his death. “Uncle Jimmy” as every one called him had not an enemy of earth. He was a good neighbor and square in all his dealings. His wife and 4 daughters survive. Funeral held at Baptist church, conducted by Rev Dicken, of Liberty. The remains were interred in city cemetery. Another pioneer, a good man, has gone from us. – the preceding article was from the Ray Co, MO Review. Mr Grizzle was formerly a resident of Jersey county, IL, and it is with regret his relatives and friends learn of his death.


GRIZZLE. John Darris Grizzle Sr, 64, of Kane, d. March 16 at Wood River township hospital. Born in Granite City, he was son of the late Truman & Lucille (Coffman) Grizzle. He had been employed as a mechanic for the barge lines. Surviving are 1 son, John Jr, Jerseyville; 2 daughters, Gail Isringhausen, Jerseyville and Yvonne Grizzle of Godfrey; 5 grandchildren; and 2 sisters, Helen Stegelmeyer of Granite City and Ruth Ambuehl of Chesterfield, MO. Rev Peter Ely officiated and the church was named as a memorial. The body was donated to science.


GRIZZLE. Joseph E Grizzle, Jr, 42, d. November 18, after a truck accident near Marshall, MO. Requiem mass was celebrated at St. Ambrose Catholic church, Godfrey. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery, Jerseyville. The former Jerseyville resident was killed when the tractor-trailer truck he was driving struck the rear of another tractor-trailer rig on interstate 70, lunged into the median and caught fire. The other truck, driven by a Kansas man, remained in the traffic lane where it created a bottleneck for several hours. He was born January 21, 1928 in Jerseyville the son of Joseph E Grizzle and the late Bertha Grizzle. He had resided in Jerseyville until 2 years ago and was a member of the local K of C Council and Fr Terrance Brady Assembly Fourth Degree Knights. A memory chalice from the assembly was presented to members of his family at Gent funeral home, Alton where rosary was recited. He is survived by his wife, Virginia (Gray) Grizzle; 2 Sons, John Edward, who is stationed with the navy in San Diego, and Kenneth Allen, at home; 1 daughter, Robyn Renee, at home; his father; 2 brothers, Frank of Alton and Kenneth of Godfrey; and 1 sister, Mrs Aden Miller of Alton.


GRIZZLE. Mabel Mareda Grizzle, 75, formerly of Carrollton, d. June 7, at Jerseyville care center. Born in Greene county, she was the daughter of the Late Pleasant & Pearl (Hardwick) Morris. She married Paul Grizzle December 13, 1930, in Kane, and he survives. Also surviving are 1 son, John H Grizzle of Hollister, CA; 3 grandchildren; and 1 brother, Harmon W Morris of Carrollton. GRIZZLE. Rabia Grizzle, 68, d. October 20, at Jersey County Memorial hospital. She was born in South Dakota, daughter of the late Andrew & Nellie (Stocks) Bishop. GROOMS. Allan Ray Grooms, 18, son of Mr & Mrs Charles R Grooms of Jerseyville, was pronounced dead at the scene of a 2-car crash on the Otterville road, 1 mile south of Otterville on April 30. Services were held at State Street Baptist church with Rev L E Hutchinson officiating. He was born July 25, 1958 and was a student at Jersey County high. Grooms was to go into the army on June 6 in the delayed entry program. In addition to his parents he is survived by 4 sisters, Nadine Grooms, Mrs Eloise Maggert and Mrs William (Jeanne) Friedel of Jerseyville and Mrs Robert (Aileen) Isringhausen of Alton; 1 brother, Charles E Grooms, Carrollton and maternal grandparents, Mr & Mrs Obi House, Marshall, AR. GROOMS. Charles Ray Grooms, 66, d. March 27, at Edwardsville Care Center West. Grooms was a welder for 32 years at Owens-IL Inc., Alton, retiring in 1983. Born in Searcy county, AR, he was the son of the late William & Ada (Corn) Grooms. On August 26, 1939 in Marshall, AR, he married Edna (Kyle) Grooms. She survives. Also surviving are 1 son, Charles E Grooms of Carrollton; 4 daughters, Nadine Grooms and Eloise Kohlenberg, both of Jerseyville, Ailene Isringhausen of Alton and Jeanne Friedel of Hamburg; 8 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Ethel Mills of Pendal, AR, and Gertie Partee of Kirby, AR; and 2 brothers, Arthur Grooms of Kerby, AR and Walter Grooms, Twin Falls, ID. GROPPEL. August Groppel, 25, of Fieldon, was buried in Gunterman cemetery. Service at Fieldon Evangelical church with Rev C H Kuhlman of Collinsville officiating. He had resided with his mother Mrs Mary M Groppel and his sister, Mrs Freda O’donnell and brother, Charles Groppel, on the Groppel farm, 3 miles west of Fieldon. His unexplained suicide occurred Thursday afternoon after he had taken members of the family to the home of the late Mrs Marie Katherine Andris, a neighbor, whose funeral was held in the Fieldon Evangelical church. While descending a hill near the Andris home a front wheel of the car he was driving struck a stump at the edge of the road, disabling the machine. Groppel’s mother and sister continued to the church with friends, while Groppel returned afoot to his home, ostensibly to obtain repairs for the car. Relatives state that the accident apparently disturbed him, but was not regarded as cause for the violent act he committed. Had left clothes piled on the dining room table, wrote a note, which was also left in plain view on the table, direction the family to where his body could be found. The body was found near a branch a short distance from the barn. One charge from an automatic gun found. Inquest was held. He leaves his mother, Mrs Mary M Groppel, 2 brothers, Henry of Alton and Charles of Fieldon, 9 sisters, Mrs Alfred Isringhausen and Mrs Freda O’donnell of Fieldon, Mrs Frank K Handler, Mrs William Egelhoff and Mrs Katie Hagen of Jerseyville, Mrs Henry Steiner of Bunker Hill, Mrs. Earl Guess of Plainview, Mrs Clifton Cunningham, East Alton and Mrs Henry Wise of Mt Olive.


GROPPEL. Carl E Groppel, 73, retired teacher of Jerseyville d. July 8 at Jersey County Memorial hospital after a lengthy illness. Services were held at Peace United Church by Rev Robert Broeder. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He had retired in June, 1970 after 25 years of teaching in Jersey county schools including E Elementary where he taught from 1948-70. He also taught in Hardin from 1946-48. He was born March 24, 1907, the son of Edward & Anna (Egelhoff) Groppel. He was a member of Peace United Church, Jerseyville, Masonic Lodge AF & AM, 32nd Scottish Rite, Belleville and Shriners Ainaid Temple, East St. Louis. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth (Herron) whom he married April 29, 1934 at Fieldon; 2 daughters, Janis Taylor of Wood River and Janet Masieroof Alton; 1 son, Bob Groppel of Delta Junction, AK; 11 grandchildren and 5 g-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Masonic services were conducted at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Peace United Church and American Cancer Society.


GROPPEL. Charles H Groppel, 80, resident of Rosedale township, died at Jersey County Memorial hospital where he had moved earlier. He was a son of the late Harmon & Louisa (Trau_ Groppel and was born in Jersey county on October 15, 1879. He was a retired farmer. Surviving are his wife, Hettie L Groppel of Rosedale, 2 daughters, Mrs William Gilman and Miss Edna Groppel of Fieldon; 2 sons, Raymond and Robert of Fieldon; 10 grandchildren and 2 g-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Oscar Groppel of Fieldon and Frank Groppel of Jerseyville. One Son Walter Edward Groppel, d. in infancy. Mr Groppel was a brother of the late Louis E Groppel and Wm J Groppel. He was a member of Fieldon UCC where final rites were held December 30, with Rev Alton Loar officiating. Interment was in Fieldon cemetery. GROPPEL. Charles W Groppel, 82, of r1 Fieldon, retired farmer, d. March 22, at Jersey County Memorial hospital where he had been a patient for a week. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev H O Renken, pastor of Fieldon UCC, officiated. Interment was in Gunterman cemetery. Masonic rites were conducted at the funeral home by Fieldon Lodge #592 AF & AM of which he was a member. He was a son of the Late Fritz & Lena (Arbogast) Groppel he was born at Otterville on October 26, 1884. Surviving are 6 sisters, Mrs Henry Steiner of Carlinville, Mrs Alfred Isringhausen and Mrs Clifton Cunningham of Jerseyville, Mrs Frank Handler of Phoenix, AZ, and Mrs Louis Rosenthal and Mrs Katie Albert of Fieldon. His parents 2 brothers, Henry and August Groppel, and 4 sisters, Mrs Wm Egelhoff, Mrs Earl Guess, Mrs Fred Isringhausen and Mrs Henry Weiss, preceded him in death.


GROPPEL. Edgar J Groppel 64, of Wood River, d. November 8, at Colonades Nursing Home, Granite City. Services were from Gray Funeral Home, Wood River. He was a native of Fieldon and operator for Shell Oil Co. with 30 years service, retiring in 1969. He married Virginia (Boker) in 1938 in Warrentown, MO. Survivors are his wife; 1 daughter, Janet Heigert of Wood River; 2 sons, Jim of Roxana and Tom of Washington, DC; 4 grandchildren; and 1 brother, Howard of Alton. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park. Memorials may be given to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children and Wanda Methodist church.

GROPPEL. Edward Groppel, 51, died at Deconess hospital, St. Louis on July 26, 1912. Funeral services were held from the German Evangelical church in Jerseyville. Rev Jacob Doellefeld officiated. Mr Groppel d. after an operation had been performed to remove gall stones. He was engaged in the harness business in Jerseyville.


GROPPEL. Edward Thomas Groppel, 72, of Rockhill, MO, d. March 21 at Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, MO. He was a retired building contractor. Born in Grafton, September 23, 1916, he was the son of Louis Edward Groppel & Effie (Wedding) Groppel. He was raised in Rosedale, later moving to St. Louis at age of 18. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of Scottish Rite and Moolah Temple, and past President of West End Lions Club, St. Louis. He is survived by 2 daughters, Marsha (Groppel) Gourley, and Barbara Joyce (Groppel). There are several grandchildren. His wife Augrey Groppel d. in Jan, 1987. A memorial service was held at Eliot Unitarian Chapel, Kirkwood, MO. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Park, St. Louis. Rev John Robinson officiated. Memorials may be given to Eliot Unitarian Chapel. Bop funeral home was in charge of arrangements.


GROPPEL. Ernesta Groppel, 42, wife of Morris Groppel of Nelbourne Beach, FL, and daughter in law of Mrs Agusta Antroubus of Jerseyville, was fatally injured in an auto accident, June 10, when her car crashed head on into another car parked on a state road just south of Melbourne Beach. The FL deputy sheriff, who happened to the following 2 cars behind Mrs Groppel when the accident occurred. He said she was driving north and apparently did not see the ford which had on its parking lights but not its headlights. Mr Groppel was alone and was traveling about 40 mph. She sustained a broken neck, crushed chest and other injuries, and was pinned under the dashboard of her car, and was dead before an ambulance arrived. Surviving her are her husband, a former Jerseyville resident,; 1 son, Michael Groppel of Miami, FL; her mother Mrs Marie Motsinger, Melbourne Beach, FL; her father Ernest E Motsinger of Canton, IL; 1 sister, Mrs Rita King, Canton; and 2 brothers, Ernest D. Motsinger, Miami, FL and Jack E Motsinger of Long Beach, CA. Mr & Mrs Groppel had resided at Canton, IL, for several years before moving to FL 2 years ago. The body was returned to Canton where funeral rites were held June 15, at Murphy funeral home. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Garden near Canton. Mrs Antrobus, Mr & Mrs Francis Gorppel, Mr & Mrs Courtney Tucker and daughter, Loraine of Jerseyville and Mr & Mrs Charles T Gerson of Godfrey went to Canton to attend the funeral rites. Morris Groppel and son and Mrs Motsinger came to Jerseyville from Canton and were overnight guests of the former’s mother Mrs Antorbus. They were enroute to FL.


GROPPEL. Ethel May Groppel, 70, of Fieldon, d. at St. Joseph hospital, Alton. Funeral services were held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev M. Edwards Breed officiated and burial was in Carrollton cemetery. The Fieldon resident was wounded in the abdomen on January 24, 1973, when her son was killed by rifle fire, in an incident occurring at the family homestead. An investigation of the shooting was made by local officials, but no arrests were made. Mrs Groppel, a daughter of the late Plowman & Bertha (Thompson) Crull, was born in Jersey county, July, 1902. Survivors are nieces and nephews. Visitation was held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville.


GROPPEL. Francis L “Syke” Groppel, 69, of Jerseyville, was pronounced d. September 21 in Piasa township from apparent drowning in a pond at Gibbons farm where he had gone fishing. Gropel was retired manager from Tricity grocery, Jerseyville and was a member of the Tri City Grocery 25 Year Club. He was born in Jersey county, June 25, 1908, a son of John L & Augusta (Gerson) Groppel. He was a member of St. Francis Church, 4th Degree K of C, St. Francis Parish Center, Moose Lodge and Hud Board. – incomplete


GROPPEL. Frank A Groppel, 75, retired farmer and former custodian at Pere Marquette State Park for 13 years, d. June 23, at Jersey County Memorial hospital where he had been a patient for 1 day. He was a son of the late Herman & Louise (Trauncih) Groppel, and was born at Fieldon on January 23, 1890. He was a member of the United Church of Christ, Senior Citizens, Jerseyville, Grafton Lodge #318 Order Eastern Star of which he was past patron, and Fieldon Lodge #592 AF & AM. Surviving are his wife, Mrs Matilda (Isringhausen) Groppel of Jerseyville, 2 sons, Howard F Groppel, Alton and Edgar J Groppel, Wood River, and 5 grandchildren. Visitation at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville where Masonic rites were conducted by Fieldon Lodge. Rev H O Renken officiated at the services at funeral home and interment was in Valhalla Memorial Park.


GROPPEL. Freda Gertrude Groppel, 73, wife of former Mayor Clemmens G Groppel, Sr, of Jerseyville, d. March 9, at St. Anthony hospital, Alton. She had been ill for an extended period and a patient for 5 days. Born in Jersey county, March 16, 1882, a daughter of the late George & Margaretha (Horn) Kessler. In addition her husband, survivors are 2 daughters, Mrs Robert Miller, Jerseyville and Mrs Otis Cooper, Fieldon; 1 son, Clemmons, Jr, Jerseyville; 7 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mrs Louis Krueger, Fieldon and Mrs Louisa Haushalter, Blue Island and 1 brother, George Kessler of Fieldon. She was preceded in death by 2 sisters, 1 brother, and 1 grandchild. She was a member of the Church of Peace and Steelman Camp, Royal Neighbors of America. Funeral services were held March 11 at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev William D. Stickney, Pastor of the Church of Peace, Jerseyville officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.

GROPPEL. Fritz Groppel, 76, retired farmer was found in a fire-swept area of Rosedale township, Jersey county, where a forest fire had been raging since Thursday am. A posse had formed Thursday evenign when Mr Groppel failed to return home at sundown, found the body on James Wehrle’s farm, near a fence where they had swept earlier in the day. Louis Jaynes, a grandson-in-law of Groppel, with whom the elderly man made his home, told the reporter that his wife’s grandfather had left home early Thursday am to go to the Wehrle farm, about 2 miles away, to inquire about farm machinery. He had ridden as far as the Parley Phipps farm with his brother, Charles Groppel and from there had walked to her Wehrle farm. He had left there about 11:30 to return to the Jaynes home. When he failed to appear at dusk they became alarmed and the search party was formed. His body was found by Robert Groppel, a nephew, who was a member of the posse. The deceased was subject to heart attacks and had possibly suffered an attack and collapsed in the path of the fire. The body was taken to Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Coroner Herbert Gubser was to conduct an inquest. Farmers who had organized to fight the fire had been unable to bring it under control. Three weeks before a forest fire in Otter Creek township had burned an area of 3000 acres and was finally extinguished by rain.


GROPPEL. Harmon (Herman) Groppel, 58, of Rosedale township, formerly highway commissioner d. 5 miles south of Fieldon of Brights disease. Funeral in Grafton burial at IOOF cemetery. He was born March 18, 1846 at Beidefeld, Westfalen, Germany. He came to the US May 26, 1856 and later married Mrs Louisa Burgermeyer. He had had a notable public career including: school director many times and served 3 years as commissioner of highways during which time he was treasurer of the board. Funeral from German Lutheran church. He leaves his widow and 6 children and 3 step children. He was preceded in death by 3 children.


GROPPEL. Harold L Groppel, 76, of R1 Grafton d. January 22 at Jersey County Memorial hospital after a lengthy illness. Services were conducted at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev V Clay Noah officiated. He was born November 8, 1905 in Jersey county he son of the late Henry & Nellei (Rogers) Groppel and prior to his retirement he was a clerk at Owen-IL Glass in Godfrey. The WWII veteran was a member of American Legion Post 492 and Jerseyville Eagles Lodge. GROPPEL. Hettie Louise Groppel, 92, of Fieldon d. February 3 at Jersey County Memorial hospital. Funeral services were held at Fieldon UCC with Rev Robert Broeder officiating. Burial was in Fieldon cemetery. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to church building fund. She was born April 14, 1887 in Rosedale township, a daughter of John & Eliza (Haller) Isringhausen. She is survived by 2 sons, Raymond, Jerseyville and Robert H of Fieldon; 2 daughters, Edna Groppel and Naomi Gillman of Fieldon; 4 sisters, Matilda Groppel and Stella Kanallakan, Jerseyville, Freda Morris and Tessie Ashlock, Wood River; 10 grandchildren; 21 g-grandchildren and 2 g-g-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H Groppel who d. December 27, 1959, 1 son, 5 brothers and 2 sisters.


GROPPEL. Jewell Susan Groppel, 50, wife of Raymond Groppel, was dead on arrival at St. Joseph hospital as a result of an accident. She was struck and killed by an auto as she attempted to cross highway 67, in front of her home. Her daughter Judy, 16, who was with her escaped injury. Mrs Groppel had lived at the Godfrey area home for 4 years and prior to that in Jersey county. She was born in Jersey county on September 1, 1914, a daughter of the Late Mr & Mrs Henry McAdams. She was a married in 1934 to Raymond Groppel. Surviving are her husband; 2 daughters, Judy, and Mrs Agnes Cates, Humbert Road; 2 sons, Harold T, Jerseyville and Stanley, at home; 3 sisters, Mrs Maudie Doris, Alton; Mrs Almeda Engel, Greenfield, ND Mrs Velma Sconce, Grafton and 1 brother, Henry Clay McAdams, Otterville. Her parents and 1 sister preceded her in death. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Burial in Fieldon cemetery.

GROPPEL. Julia Emma Groppel, 79, of Bethalto, d. January 26 at Wood River Township Hospital. Private services were held January 28, at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev Myron F Liefer of Zion Lutheran Church, Bethalto, officiated. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. She was born August 13, 1896 in Jerseyville, daughter of Henry J & Minnie (Dewerff) Tuetken. Her husband, Theodore L Groppel, d. November 20, 1973. Surviving are 2 sisters, Josephine E Tuetken and Mrs Albeta Kibby of Clearwater, FL and 1 brother, Walter A Tuetken of Shnellville, GA.


GROPPEL. Louisa Groppel died at the home of her daughter Mrs Wm H Dunsing, near Rosedale on January 13. Mrs Groppel accompanied by her sons, had started for the entertainment at Grafton, about 1 mile from her home. She began to feel ill but continued to her daughter’s house where she died a few minutes after arriving. Funeral services were conducted Mon. from the German Lutheran Church of Fieldon.


GROPPEL. MOTHER OF TWELVE CHILDREN SUCCUMBS; FUNERAL YESTERDAY. All of Offspring of Mrs. Henry Groppel, 40 Years Old, Are Living. Many relatives and friends attended the funeral yesterday at Frieden’s German Evangelical church in Fifeldon of Mrs. Nellie Groppel, who died Saturday at her home eight miles west of Fieldon following the birth of her twelfth child, all of whom are living. Mrs. Groppel was aged 40 years, 10 months and 15 days. Rev. C. H. Kuhlman of Jerseyvaille, pastor of the church, offficiated and burial was in Gunterman cemetery. The officiating clergyman paid fitting tribute to the heroic and beloved wife and mother. Mrs. Groppel was born near Jerseyville on March 12, 1884. She was married to Henry H. Groppel in July, 1905. She is survived by her husband and twelve children, her aged mother, Mrs. Angeline Rodgers-Gerson, one sister, Mrs. Mary Miles, two half-brothers, one step-sister, one step-brother and many other relatives and sympathizing friends and neighbors.

GROPPEL. Marie Josephine Groppel, 59, Jerseyville beautician and wife of Francis L Groppel, d. March 1, at St. Joseph hospital, Alton. She had been a patient for 3 1/2 months. Final rites were held at St. Francis church, with requiem mass celebrated by Rev Fr Francis Lee and burial was in St. Francis cemetery. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Mrs Groppel was a daughter of the late Joseph & Mary (Berghoff) Mans, and was born in Madison county January 27, 1909. Surviving her are her husband; 2 sons, John, Jerseyville and Russell of Godfrey; 2 grandchildren; 4 sisters, Mrs Alfred (Leona) Beck, Godfrey, Mrs Wm G (Lillian) Kaeser, Omaha, NE, Mrs Heeodore (Agnes) St. Rebel and Mrs Kenneth (Vera) Mundell, Jerseyville and 1 brother, Leo Mans of Godfrey.

On January 28, 1914 in Jerseyville, she married frank a groppel. He d. June 25, 1964. Surviving are 1 son, howard groppel of Alton; 5 grandchildren; 8 g-grandchildren; and 2 sister, freda morris and tessie ashlockk, both of wood river. GROPPEL. Nellie Groppel, 40, died at home 8 miles west of Fieldon, following the birth of her 12th child. She was born near Jerseyville March 12, 1884. She married Henry H Groppel in July 1905. She leaves her husband and all 12 children; her Mother, Mrs Angeline (Rodgers) Gerson, 1 sister, Mrs Mary Miles; 2 half brother; 1 step sister and 1 step brother. Rev C H Kuhlman of Jerseyville officiated at the funeral from Frieden German Evangelical church, Fieldon. Burial was in Gunterman cemetery.


GROPPEL. Oscar H Groppel, 79, died at Jersey County Memorial hospital where he had been a patient for a few days. Visitation was held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev M. Edwards Breed, pastor of First United Presbyterian church, officiated at the service, and burial was in Carrollton cemetery. The retired farmer of Fieldon, was the son of the Late Mr & Mrs Herman Groppel and was born in Rosedale township. Surviving Mr Groppel are his widow, Mrs Ethel Mae Groppel, and 1 son, Truman Groppel.


GROPPEL. Ronda Jean, 7, daughter of Mr & Mrs Clemens Groppel, Jr, of Jerseyville Tuesday am at St. Anthony hospital, Alton. For the past 2 years, Ronda Jean has been ill of Hodgkins’ disease but despite her frail health she was able to carry on first grade studies at West elementary. Last week she was stricken with measles and pneumonia complications that developed resulted in her death. Ronda Jean and her twin sister, Rita Jane, were born in Carrollton, December 24, 1951, but Rita died at birth. In addition to her parents, she is survived – incomplete


GROPPEL. Theodore Groppel, 22, d. December 29, at the home of his brother, Fred, 4 miles west of Fieldon. Death was caused by typhoid malaria. Funeral from Lutheran church at Fieldon, Rev Martin officiating. He leaves 4 brothers.


GROPPEL. Theodore L Groppel, 76, of Bethalto, d. November 20 at Wood River Township hospital. Services were held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev Leonard Todd of Moro officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He was born March 8, 1897 in Jerseyville a son of Edward & Anna (Eglehofff) Groppel. Mr groppel retired from the transportation department at Shell Oil Co. Surviving are his wife, Julia (Tuetken) Groppel; 1 brother, Carl Groppel of Jerseyville; and 1 sister, Mrs Anthony (Emma) Schmittag of Jerseyville. Visitation at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville.


GROPPEL. Velma Anna Groppel, 64, of Alton, d. December 5, at Wood River Township hospital. Visitation was at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville where final rites were held December 7. Rev R E George officiated and burial was in Rosedale cemetery. She was born in Fieldon March 2, 1910, the daughter of the late William J & Ella M (Crull) Groppel. She is survived by 1 brother, Warren Groppel of East Alton, and cousins.


GROSJEAN. Andre Grosjean, d. November 25, in Jerseyville. Funeral from German church. The funeral was attended by the Jerseyville brass band, of which he was a member.


GROSJEAN. Nicholas Grosjean, one of Jerseyville’s pioneer citizens d. Wed., December 16, 1903. He was born in Alsace, a French province December 6, 1829. He was a soldier in the army of France and served through the Crimean war, participating in the famous siege of Sebastopol, which lasted 11 months. He came to America in 1857 and settled in Jersey county where he remained until his death. At the outbreak of civil war, he volunteered his services at first call for troops. He joined Co. F of the 14th Il, Infantry, and serving until disabled. Funeral from home on December 18 with Rev H T Bahnsen of German Evangelical church.


GROSS. Mrs J Gross, d. as the result of injuries received in a fall last Aug. There was a large attendance at the funeral at Bethel church. Elder T J Roady of Kane officiated. Interment was in Hawkins Prairie cemetery.


GROSS. Carl S Gross, 76, d. July 11, at Alton Memorial hospital, after a brief illness. He was a farmer and co-owner of Carl’s Garage in Jerseyville. He also managed Jersey county farm sup for 10 years, retiring in 1978. The WWII US navy veteran was a member of the K of C and Moose Lodge 695 of Jerseyville. Born in Jersey county on March 9, 1915, he was the son of the late William & Dovie Mae (Daniels) Gross. He married M Wannetta (Murphy) Gross in 1937 and she d. May 4, 1980. He later married Pauline (Vaughn) Kuebrich in 1980, in Jerseyville; she survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Virginia Mae Sanders of Maplewooe, MO; twin sons, Robert Lee Gross, Jerseyville and Roger William Gross, Greenfield; 1 step daughter, Carol A Johns of Baldwin, MO; 1 stepson, Ronald J Kuebrich, Richmond Heights, MO; 11 grandchildren; 7 g-grandchildren; 4 sisters, Ruby Brickey of Cuba, MO, Reda Tapscott of Chesterfield, Edna Sawtell of Carrollton and Betty Rintoul of Richmond, VA; and 1 brother, John Gross of Highlands, TX. Preceding him in death were 4 brothers, Ray, Claude, Paul, and Earl Gross. Visitation was at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral mass was at St. Francis church with Rev William Kekeisen as celebrant. Military graveside rites were conducted at Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey by American Legion Post 492 and VFW Post 4528, both of Jerseyville, of which he was a member. GROSS. Claude A “Pop” Gross, 75, d. August 24, 2988, at Alton Memorial hospital. Gross was employed 33 years a machinist for Owens-IL of Godfrey, retiring in 1972. Born in Jersey county, he was the son of the late William & Dovie (Daniels) Gross. He married the former Mildred V (Bowers) Grossnov 24, 1934 in Jerseyville. She d. June 20, 1982. Surviving are, 1 son, Donald E Gross Sr of Jerseyville; 3 daughters, Doris I Christiansen, Lela Ferguson and Claudia Vaughn, all of Jerseyville; 12 grandchildren; 15 g-grandchildren; 3 brothers Earl Gross of Godfrey, Carl Gross of Jerseyville and John Gross, Highlands, TX; and 4 sisters, Ruby Brickey, Cuba, MO, Reda Tapscott and Edna Sawtell, both of Chesterfield, and Betty Rintoul of MS. 2 brothers Ray and Paul preceded him in death. She was born January 18, 1921 in Missouri the daughter of William & Sarah V (Dunham) Murphy, and married Carl S Gross on December 12, 1937 in St. Charles MO. She was employed at Shortal Furniture & Appliance. She was a member of the Veteran’s of Foreign War and American Legion Auxiliaries. She is survived by her husband; 1 daughter, Mrs Cledus( Virginia) Sanders, St. Louis, MO and 2 (twins) Robert of Jerseysville and Roger of Greenfield; 10 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Truman Murphy of Kane and Raymond Murphy of Jerseyville. She was born March 21, 1917 in Jersey county near Hardin, daughter of the late George W & Beulah (Cope) Bowers. Mrs Gross was a member of First Baptist church and Order of Eastern Star 656 where she had served as past patron. GROSS. Paul W Gross, 57, of R 2 Godfrey d. June 22 at Alton Memorial hospital. Gross was born September 10, 1922 in Jerseyville the son of William & Dovie (Daniels) Gross. He married Ruth Brzowsky on May 16, 1945 in Baltimore, MD. He was employed at Owens-IL Glass Works for 28 yrs, and was maintenance foreman for Monsanto for 5 years and for 1 year was maintenance foreman at the Gould foundry at St. Louis, MO. He was preceded in death by 1 brother. Visitation and funeral from Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Richard Brzowsky officiated and burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey. GROSS. Raymond C Gross, 41, of Belton, TX, died at the scene of a truck accident on July 7, at Belton. Born November 9, 1934 in Jersey county he was the son of the Late Lester & Cora (Meeks) Gross. He is survived by his wife, Ella (Deuel); 3 daughters, Mrs Robert (Vanessa) Wagener, Valerie and Loretta Gross; 1 son, Norman Douglas, all of Belton; 1 granddaughter; also surviving are 5 brothers, Leroy of Selah, WA, John of Chandler, AZ, Marlin, Richard and Joe all of Carrollton; and 5 sisters, Mrs Charles (Sue) Fry of Belton, Mrs Thurmond (Cecile) Loy of Greenfield, Mrs Jerry (Barbara) Guthrie of New Haven, MO, Mrs Stuart (Ima Jean) Merrick of Kansas City, MO and Mrs Robert (Sharon) Joiner of Carlinville. Services were conducted at Bethel Baptist church with Rev Earl Clagg officiating. Burial was in Puritt cemetery near Jerseyville.


GROSS. William Gross, 79, retired farmer and carpenter, d. February 27, at Garnet Chateau, where he had been a resident for 1 year. Funeral services were held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev Jack Phillips of the Church of Christ, officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He was born in Medora on May 18, 1886 the son of John W & Sarah (Pritchett) Gross. He is survived by 6 sons, Ray and Carl of Jerseyville, John of Highland, TX, Claude, Kane, Earl and Paul, Godfrey; 4 daughters, Mrs Ray (Ruby) Brickey, Jerseyville, Mrs John (Reda) Tapscott and Mrs Clarence (Edna) Sawtell, Both of Chesterfield and Mrs Mark (Betty) Rintoul, of Kankakee and 1 grandson, James Liles of Godfrey who was raised by the Grosses; 25 grandchildren and 39 g-grandchildren; 4 sisters, Mrs Ruth Maguire of Franklin; Mrs Nellie Gilworth, Medora, Mrs Florence Garrison of Alton and Mrs Kate Elliot of Benton Harbor, MI. GROTHAUS. Paul Joseph Grothaus, 80, d. December 27, at St. Francis hospital at Litchfield. He retired from farming in 1961. He married Theresa (Robey) Grothaus September 1914. Surviving are his wife, 3 Daughters, Mrs Laverne (Catherine) Wock, Mrs Leo (Pauline) Egelhoff and Mrs Joe (Louise) Griffin all of Jerseyville; 2 sons, Gene and Richard Both of Plainview; 22 grandchildren; 14 g-grandchildren; 1 brother, Fred, Funton, MO; 1 half brother, Bernard of Silex, MO; 1 half sister, Mrs Jack (Betty) Macfarlane of Colorado Springs, CO; 2 step brothers, William Fleet of Walden Springs, MO and Sterling Fleet of Arkansas and 1 step sister, Mrs S Myrtle Fleet of Arkansas. Funeral mass was held at St. Denis Catholic church in Shipman and interment was later that day in Millwood, MO.


GROVER. Jesse A Grover, 75, formerly of Hartford, d. unexpectedly March 3, 1988, in Jersey county. He was a pipe fitter foreman with Shell Oil in Wood River for 41 yrs, retiring in 1974. Born in New Hope, MO, he was the son of the late Henry & Anna (Kitson) Grover. On November 14, 1931, he married Wretha (Stumbough) in St. Charles, MO. Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters, Twila Liley of Bethalto and Starla Johnston of Collinsville; 1 son, E Dale Grover of Jerseyville; 10 grandchildren; 3 g-grandchildren; 1 step g-grandchildren; 1 brother, Clarence O Grover of Decatur; and 1 sister, Viola Kuehnel of Jerseyville. He was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 5 sisters. Visitation and services were held at Elias-Smith funeral home. Clint Evans officiated and burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey. GROVES. David A Groves, 24, of Camp Casey, Korea, d. November 12 at US army hospital in Seoul, Korea. He was the son of Charles & Dorothy (Loelle) Groves of Jerseyville. He leaves 1 sister, Susan Finkes of Dow, paternal grandmother, Tempa Groves of Kane and maternal grandmother, Minnie Loellke of Jerseyville. Funeral from Gubser Home by Rev James Emsley. GRUPE. Dorothy Grupe, of St. Louis, d. Sun. She had been in failing health for some time. Mrs R C Chappell and Miss Florence Shortal were informed late Sunday afternoon. The mass of the resurrection was celebrated and burial was in Calvary cemetery. Mrs Grupe, an only daughter of the late Mr & Mrs Robert Shortal, was born and reared in Jerseyville. She is survived by her husband, William Grupe, and nieces and nephews. Her parents and 3 Brothers, Harold, Joseph, and George, preceded her in death.


GRUPP. Mazie Frances Grupp, 92, d. August 27, at Jerseyville care center. She was a retired secretary for an architectural firm. Born in Chicago, she was the daughter of the late John & Anna (Gavin) Grupp. Her sister, Anna Grupp of Kane survives. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rosary was recited. Funeral mass was celebrated at Holy Ghost church with Rev William Hembrow as celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery. Memorials may be given to masses.


GUALBERT. Sister M Gualbert, 83, the former Rose Kleffner of Jerseyville, d. October 15 at Notre Dame Convent, St. Louis, MO. She was the daughter of the Late Frank & Elizabeth Kleffner. She is survived by 2 sisters, Miss Josephine Kleffner and Miss Catherine Kleffner of Jerseyville. Services were held from the Convent October 18 and burial was in the Convent cemetery.


GUBSER. Eliza J Gubser, 86, of Jerseyville, d. November 5, at Jersey County Memorial hospital where she had been a patient for a month. She had in ill health for some time. Mrs Gubser was the widow of Henry J Gubser, a Jerseyville business man for more than 30 years. The couple moved to Jerseyville in 1917 and the death of Mr Gubser occurred in 1948. Final rites were held November 7, at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev M. Edwards Breed, pastor of First United Presbyterian church, officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. She was the daughter of the late George & Ella (Causey) Sandifer and was born November 24, 1883 in Bond county. She is survived by 1 daughter, Mrs Louella Haun, 1 son, Herbert W Gubser both of Jerseyville, 3 grandchildren, 5 g-grandchildren, and 1 sister, Mrs John Loddic of Sacramento, CA. Mrs Gubser was a member of the Ruby Rebekah Lodge of which she was a past Noble Grand, the Eastern Star of which she was a 50 years member and a past matron, and Royal Neighbors of America. She was also a member of the Past Noble Grand Club.


GUBSER. Herbert W Gubser, 70, of Godfrey, d. November 25, at St. Anthony hospital, Alton after a long illness. He was the owner and operator of Gubser Funeral Home and Gubser furniture store both in Jerseyville, from 1932-1947 when he retired. Born in Bond county, IL, he was the son of the late Henry Joseph & Eliza Jane (Sandifer) Gubser. He Married Doris M (Voorhees) Gubser in Jerseyville January 26, 1935. Surviving are his wife; 1 son, Richard H Gubser, Jerseyville; 3 grandchildren and 1 sister, Luella Haun of Jerseyville. Visitation at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Final rites at first Presbyterian church with Rev M Edwards officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian church where he had been a member for 54 yrs.


GUENTHER. Herman O Guenther, 73, of R1 Dow d. February 25 at his home. Services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Stuart Venlet officiated and burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey. Born near Grafton July 5, 1907, he was a son of Herman C & Josephine (Quitt) Guenther. He retired as an electrician for Olin Corp. in 1972. Surviving are his wife, Hazel (Ashford); 2 daughter, Barbara O’neal, Jerseyville and Donna Croxford, Godfrey; several grandchildren; 2 Sister, Rita McCoy of Fieldon and Bertha Blasa of Grafton. His parents, 1 son and 1 daughter, preceded him in death. Memorials may be given to Berean Bible Church, Alton.


GUENTHER. Larry Eugene Guenther, 25, of rural Dow, drowned Sat., March 15, when he fell out of his boat into the Mississippi river near the vicinity of Grafton Boat co. His body was recovered Sunday am. An employee of Laclede Steel in Alton, he was born August 12, 1951 in Alton, the son of Herman & Hazel (Ashford) Guenther. Surviving are his parents; 2 sisters, Mrs Jimmy (Barbara) O’neal, Jerseyville and Mrs Wayne (Dona) Croxford, Godfrey. Final rites were conducted March 18, from Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Interment was in Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey. Memorials may be given to heart or cancer funds.


GUENTHNER. Mark Allen Guenthner, 11, was killed July 12, when struck by a car in Heidelbronn, Germany. Born September 14, 1962 in Jerseyville, he was the son of Mrs Willie (Lester) Taylor of Heiderbronn. In addition to his mother are; his step father, Sgt Melvin Taylor of Heidelbronn; 2 brothers, Paul and Melvin; and 2 sisters Diane and Lorie, all at home; his grandmother, Mrs Melissa Lester of Jerseyville. Funeral services were at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev R E George officiated. Burial was in Meadow Branch cemetery in the Grafton vicinity.


GUILANDER. Effie Alice “Woc” Guilander, 63, died at Christian hospital ne, St. Louis, following a brief illness. She was a native of Kane, daughter of the late James a & Grace (Wheeler) Mundy. She married Robert M Guilander and he survives. Also surviving are 1 daughter, Janice L Raftis, Grayslake, IL; 2 sons, Robert E of Collinsville and Richard E of Chesterfield, MO; 6 grandchildren; 1 sister, Irma Terpening of Kane; and 2 brothers, Keith Mundy, Jerseyville and Louis Mundy, East Alton. Visitation was at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Eastern Star services were conducted by Kane Lodge Elizabeth Chapt #17. Services were held at Kane Baptist church. GUILANDER. Orville B Guilander Sr, 87, of Kane d. November 15 at Jerseyville care center. Services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Peter Ely officiated and burial was in Kane cemetery. He was born November 10, 1896 in Jersey county to the late Jesse & Lula (Reno) Guilander and was a farmer. Guilander was a 73 year member of Kane Baptist church. Surviving are his wife, Edna (Killbrew) Guilander whom he married April 4, 1918 in St. Louis; 1 son, —— Guilander, Kane; 2 daughters, Charlotte Woods, Homestead, FL and Joyce Murray of Kane; 8 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 1 son, Orville Guilander Jr. Memorials may be given to Kane Baptist church.


GUILANDER. Guilander, – incomplete – Director of Jersey County Farm Supply with 21 years service and was president of Medora farm supply. He was a past director of the former Kane grain c which became Jersey county grain. The farmer was born January 10, 1919 in Jersey county, son of Orville & Edna (Killebrew) Guilander of Kane. He was a member of King Solomon Lodge 197, Kane, and Worthey Post American Legion 492 and VFW. The WWII army veteran served 21 months in the South Pacific. He is survived by his wife, the former Roberta (Bean) Guilander whom he married December 31, 1941 in St. Charles, MO; his parents; 1 son, Ronald Guilander of Kane; 1 daughter, Carol Brown of Jerseyville; 4 grandchildren; 1 brother Robert Guilander of Kane; 2 sisters, Joyce Murray, Kane and Charlotte Woods of Homestead, FL. Military rites were conducted at Kane cemetery by Legion Post 492. Memorials designated were American Cancer Society and the Heart Fund. Arrangements at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville.


GUINN. Alex F Guinn, 86, former Jerseyville resident d. August 1 at a Health Center in Kansas City, MO. He had lived in Kansas City the past several years. A native of Gower, MO, he had graduated from the University of MO and received his master’s degree from Washington U, St. Louis. He served 2 years in the air force during WWII. He taught mathematics and drama at Jersey Township high school before retiring in 1963. He is survived by 1 Sister, Mrs Lillian Witt of Shawnee Mission, KS, and 7 nieces and nephews.


GULLEDGE. Floyd Eugene Gulledge, 70, of Perique, MO, died at Jersey County Memorial hospital. He was the father of Robert E Gulledge, Jerseyville. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Masonic services were conducted also at funeral home. Interment was in Campground Cemetery, Galatia, where services were performed by Alva Crim, Minister of the First Church of God, W Frankfort. Surviving are his son Robert, his wife, Laverne M Gulledge, 6 grandchildren; 1 brother, Burt Gulledge of Palmyra. His parents, 1 sister, and 1 brother, preceded him in death.

Surviving are his wife, Georgia Gunterman; 2 sons, Gene of Jerseyville and Carl, Ashland; 3 Daughters, Mrs Ralph (Rosa Lee) Robeen, Jerseyville, Mrs ——ap24 at charity Baptist church. GUNTERMAN. Edna Gunterman, 82, of Effingham, formerly of Jerseyville, died at St. Anthony hospital, Effingham. Born in Jersey county, daughter of the Late James Franklin & Sara (Ottwell) Morgan, she married Leslie Gunterman, who d. May 24, 1970. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Funeral was at First Baptist church, Jerseyville. Rev V Clay Noah Jr, officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Memorials may be given to her church.


GUNTERMAN. Georgia Gunterman, 75, of Alton, d. January 30 at St. Joseph hospital, Alton. She has worked at Beverly farm for the last 35 years as a foster grandparent. Born in Carrollton, a daughter of the late Albert & Gertrude Vineyard. She married Herchel Picker Gunterman who d. in 1974. Surviving are 2 Sons, Albert Eugene of Jerseyville and Carl of Jacksonville; 3 daughters, Rosa Lee Robeen of Jerseyville Joyce Desherlia and Linda Gunterman, both of Alton; 25 grandchildren; 3 g-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Albert Vineyard, Eldred and Athen Vineyard, Greenfield. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.


GUNTERMAN. Gertrude May Gunterman, 74, d. September 27, at St. Anthony infirmary, Alton where she had been a patient for 9 months. She was a daughter of the late Mr & Mrs Byron Erwin and was born in Jersey county June 23, 1877. Surviving are 3 sons, C H Gunterman, CA, J H Gunterman, NY and Herschel Gunterman of Jerseyville; 2 Daughters, Mrs George Sweeney and Mrs George Jennings of Alton; 3 Brothers, Loren Erwin of Kane, Ernest Erwin, Jerseyville and Guy Erwin, Springfield, 15 grandchildren and 8 g-grandchildren.


GUNTERMAN. Herbert Gunterman, 64, d. of heart disease at his farm northeast of Jerseyville. Funeral from on S State St. Rev W S Neely of Auburn. He had purchased tile at White Hall to tile his farm land and became ill while doing this work. He leaves his wife Stella (Barnes) Gunterman and 1 son, Herbert Laverne Gunterman. He was a son of the Late Jacob & Mary (Reddish) Gunterman, members of Jersey county pioneer families. His only Sister, Mrs Kate Randolph, d. December 31, 1903.


GUNTERMAN. Gerbert R Gunterman, 74, d. January 16 at Jersey County Memorial hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Thurman Strange officiated, burial was in Fieldon cemetery. He was a farmer and was born August 29, 1900 in Fieldon, a son of Frank & Emma (Bethel) Gunterman. Surviving are his wife Grace (Cope) Gunterman; 3 sons, John of Chicago, Robert, Caseyville, and Wesley, Charleston, SC; 10 grandchildren; 4 g-grandchildren; 1 Brother Raymond Gunterman, Hardin and Rachel Mckinney of Jerseyville. His parents, 4 brothers and 3 sisters, preceded him in death.


GUNTERMAN. Herschel B Gunterman, 69, of Godfrey, died at his home Sun. He retired from the State of IL, having operated heavy equipment with the highway department. Surviving are his wife, Georgia; 2 sons, Gene, Jerseyville and Carl, Ashland, IL; 3 daughters, Mrs Ralph (Rosa) Rdobeen, Jerseyville, Mrs Joyce Elliot, Ashland, IL, and Miss Linda Gunterman, Alton; 1 sister, Mrs Hazel Sweeney of Alton and 19 grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev M. Edwards Breed officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.


GUNTERMAN. Horace Paul Gunterman, 29, son of Mr & Mrs Frank Gunterman, was born near Fieldon, Jersey county, on February 28, 1892. He d. August 3, 1921, at the home of his wife’s mother. He had gone to Hot Springs, AR, for his health and his death was due to blood poisoning following a slight injury to his knee. He married Zora (Phillips) of Morehous, MO on December 26, 1918. His remains were brought to Jerseyville and taken to the home of his father, Frank Gunterman. Funeral services were from the C P church at Fieldon. Rev Wilson of Calhoun county officiated and burial was in Fieldon cemetery. He leaves his wife; 2 children Horace Paul, 2, and Emily Rebecca, 3 1/2 mo. The was employed by a number of Jerseyville men who have an irrigation project in southwest Missouri. He had been foreman in charge of the land project.


GUNTERMAN. Jacob Gunterman, 69, d. after 3 years of illness. He was born 2 miles west of Fieldon on December 14, 1834, being one of a family of e Children: Margaret, Jacob, Isaac, William, Mary, John, Elizabeth and Joseph, children of John & L Malinda Gunterman. Jake was next to the oldest and leaves his sister Lizzie Bland as the only remaining child. He was reared on the farm and on April 14, 1859, married Mary, daughter of Zeddock & Sophia Reddish. He settled on a farm 3 miles north of Raymond, Montgomery Co. They were parents of 4 children, Herert Mariettqa, Em-er and Elizabeth. In the years of 65-66 he lost his entire family except Herbert, who after his mother’s death, which occurred on January 26, 1866, went to live with his grandparents, leaving Jake alone to mourn the loss of his family. On June 1, 1871 he married Luch Ann, daughter of Zeddock & Sophia Reddish. Taking Herbert with them, they went to the farm in Montgomery co where they resided until February 1875 when they moved 7 miles west of Fieldon, on the farm of his father-in-law. Remaining there until the fall of 81, he moved 5 miles southeast of Jerseyville on what is known as the old Meyers place where he resided until 94 when he moved to what is known as the Geo Randoplh place, afterwards purchased by Herbert, his son, where on he d. Herbert the only son, Lizzie the only sister, were left to mourn him. He was laid to rest beside his father and mother in Gunterman cemetery on the old homestead. Rev John H Belt officiated. Pall bearers: Spencer Wycoff, Joseph Powell, James Nugent, Charlie Stabley, Geo Vanhorne, Martin Beatty, Frank Rowden and Joseph Morrison. “Item” Jerseyville Republican 1895, Fieldon: Henry Heiderschied lately moved onto the old Gunterman place northwest of Fieldon. While cleaning up and burning rubbish, he found a can of money which had probably been left there by the Guntermans years before, he found the can after it had been thrown into the fire and the gold and silver melted. – this is one of the oldest places in the township.


GUNTERMAN. Leslie Clyde Gunterman, 79, of R1 Jerseyville d. at Jersey County Memorial hospital just 6 days after the death of his sister, Mrs Effie M Cummings, who d. on May 18. Final rites were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Carlton Christenson, pastor of First Baptist church, officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He was born May 26, 1890 at Fieldon the son of Frank & Emma (Bethel) Gunterman. Mr Gunterman had been a farmer. Surviving are his wife, Edna (Morgan) Gunterman; grandchildren Leslie Smith, Kenneth Smith and Mrs Harry Mcleod of Jerseyville and Pvt Darrell Smith of Germany; 2 brothers, Herb Gunterman, Otterville and Raymond Gunterman, Hardin and 2 sisters, Mrs Gussie Cope and Mrs Rachel Mckinney of Jerseyville. His parents, 1 daughter, 2 brother and 2 sisters preceded him in death.


GUNTERMAN. Mrs Lucy Gunterman, 78, d. February 22, 1917. Funeral at Presbyterian church with Rev Neeley. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery.


GUNTERMAN. Luvena Gunterman, 95, d. July 12, at Waters nursing home where she had resided about 3 years. Funeral services were held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. She was a member of the Presbyterian church for 75 years and final rites were conducted by M. Edwards Breed, pastor of First United Presbyterian church, Jerseyville. Burial was Oak Grove cemetery. She was a daughter of the late Matthew & Elizabeth (Russell) Darr and was born March 9, 1873, on a farm about 4 miles west of Jerseyville. She was the surviving of a family of 15 brothers and sisters. She had lived in Jersey county all her life with the exception of 35 years spent in Alton. She was the widow of Joe Gunterman. Surviving are 1 daughter, Mrs Alma Faye Homer, Jerseyville; 3 grandchildren; 4 g-grandchildren; and 2 g-g-grandchildren. 1 daughter, Mrs Ethel King preceded her in death.


GUNTERMAN. Emma Guntermann, died at her home 4 miles southwest of Fieldon on May 13, 1916. She was daughter of Thomas & Caroline Bethel was born in Richwood Township, Jersey county December 8, 1863. Her mother died and Emma lived with an aunt until her marriage to Frank P Guntermann in Fieldon December 17, 1885. She joined Fieldon ME church. As a wife, mother and grandmother, her life was one of beauty of character. She always proved to be a cheerfun, pleasant and faithful wife and kind, patient and loving mother. She leaves her husband, 9 children: Leslie, Horace, William, Herbert, Raymond and Edna Gunterman, Gussie Cope, Effie Cummings and Rachel Mckinney. Norman, her tenth child, d. in infancy on Feb. 22, 1905. Also surviving 8 grandchildren and 3 brothers. Funeral at Fieldon Presbyterian church, Rev R Russell. Burial in Fieldon cemetery.

Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. She was born February 12, 1907 in Rosedale township, a daughter of luther & lillian (myers) johnson. Surviving are her husband, john guntren; 1 son, frank guntren; 1 daughter, mrs noreen hildred, Jerseyville; 9 grandchildren; 1 g-grandchild; 1 brother, clifford johnson, Grafton; 3 sister, addie wadlow and efffie thompson, both of Alton and elva phillips, edwardsville. She was preceded in death by 1 daughter, mexva fox, 2 brother, jessie and melvin johnson, and 1 sister, ethel collins. Memorials may be given to gospel assembly church.


GUNTREN. John F Guntren, 81, of Jerseyville d. March 26, at Jersey County Memorial hospital. Services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Clyde Shaw officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. He was born March 27, 1900 in St. Louis; a son of Jacob & Minnie (Smith) Guntren. He was retired from Owens-IL. Survivors are 1 son, Frank Guntren, Jerseyville; 1 daughter, Noreen Hildred of Godfrey, 9 grandchildren and 3 g-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Floy (Johnson) Guntren whom he married April 23, 1925; she d. June 6, 1978; parents, 1 half brother and 1 daughter, Melva Fox. Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville were in charge of arrangements.


GUYAUX. Alice Guyaux, d. February 3 at a hospital in Fargo, ND. She is survived by her husband, Robert; 1 son, Jim of Eugene, OR; 1 daughter, Mrs Betty Hulst; and 4 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr & Mrs Frank Thomas, and 1 brother, Maynard Dunham. Services were held at Roseau, MN for Mrs Guyaux.


GWILLIAM. Arthur H Gwilliam, 92, d. November 17 at Alton Memorial hospital. He retired from farming in 1948, and was born in Girard, son of the late George & Nellie (Williams) Gwillim. He married Stella (Clower) Gwillim on February 5, 1916, in Carlinville, and she d. in 1979. Survivors are 1 daughter, Bernice Lahr, Piasa; 1 son, Donald Gwillim, Shipman; 6 grandchildren; 10 g-grandchildren; and 1 brother, Howard Gwillim, Shipman. Visitation was at Warner-Targhetta funeral home, Brighton. Service was at Mt Zion Baptist church, Piasa. Revs Charles Barnes and Tom Olney officiated. Burial was in Piasa cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church where he was a member.


GWINNER. Harry Gwinner, 29, son of alderman A M Gwinner of Alton, d. Mon. when he was struck by a train. The accident happened at Marston crossing just south of Delhi. Gwinner and a companion, Mrs Edith Troubough, 23, were struck by the north-bound Chicago & Alton passenger train. Gwinner was employed as fireman on stills for Standard Oil Co. The family was formerly from Jerseyville.
