ELDREDGE. Capt. Anthony H. Eldredge died at the residence of his on, Judge Phineas Eldredge, Sunday morning Dec 30, 1888 at the age of 94 years, eight months and one day. Capt Eldredge was born in Philadelphia, Pa April 29, 1794, the youngest son of Capt. Phineas and Jane Eldredge, to whom seven children were born, one being the mother of Dr James Garvin of Alton. the father of Capt. Eldredge was a master in our naval service during the Rev. War, serving during the whole war. His great-grandfather, Capt Enoch Eldredge, commanded the Colonial fleet in the taking of Louisburg, June 17, 1745. The subject of our sketch commenced following the sea at the age of 14 and continued until his 44th year, with the exception of 2 years that he was enrolled as private in the Washington guards, during the War of 1812.He was married Oct 5, 1815 to Miss Hannah Morris by whom he had two children. She lived but a short time and Dec 22, 1820 he married Miss Susannah Vance daughter of Adam Vance by whom he had three children, Judge Phineas Eldredge, Anthony Eldredge who died of yellow fever 1841 and Judge William Eldredge living in Golconda, Pope Co., Ilin 1855 he moved to Jersey County where he resided until his death. ELDREDGE. Died at home of son, Judge Phineas Eldredge, near Brighton Nov 9,1881, Mrs Susanna M. wife of Capt. Anthony Eldredge. Born in Philadelphia June 17, 1799 and was the third child of Adam and Elizabeth Vance. Married Capt. Eldredge Dec 2, 1820. Three sons, two survive: Judge Phineas of Brighton and Judge Wm. V. of Pope Co., Il She came to Jersey Co in 1848. Devout member of Episcopal Church. Funeral from Judge Phineas Eldredge home. Mr and Mrs James Burke of Jerseyville. Mrs Burke a granddaughter of deceased.
ELFGEN. Bert F. Elfgen, a resident of Alton for many years, died Monday evening Jan 20 at St Anthony’s Infirmary where he had been a patient for five weeks. He had been ill since last October. Mr Elfgen was the son of the late Mr and Mrs Joseph Elfgen and was born in Elsah, Nov 19, 1870. He moved with his parents to Alton when he was a few years old. Surviving him are his wife, one son, Eugene K. and two sisters, Mrs Amelia Slaten and Mrs Clara Elfgen all of Alton. funeral services were held from the family home Thursday afternoon with the Rev. Edgar Vance and Rev F.M. Hedger officiating. Entombment was in Grandview Mausoleum.
ELLENBAUM. Mrs Della L. Ellenbaum, nee Kirchner, of Chicago, a former Jersey County resident died Tuesday morning April 26 in Chicago. She was the widow of Frank Ellenbaum. Surviving Mrs Ellenbaum are one daughter, Miss Esther Ellenbaum and one son Frank Ellenbaum, Jr. and one grandson, Charles Ellenbaum all of Chicago and one brother Harry W. Kirchner of Otterville. She was sister of the late Lula K. Duncan. Funeral services were held in Chicago, Wednesday afternoon April 27. The body is at the Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville where friends may call after 2 o’clock this afternoon, Thursday, April 28. Final rites will be held at the Otterville Baptist Church Fridayafternoon at 2 o’clock Rev. Avery Courtney, pastor of the church will officiate ate services and interment will be in the Otterville Cemetery.
ELLERMAN. Harold L. Ellerman, 78, died at 11:40 a.m. Saturday, Jan 2, 1988 at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville. Employed by Central Illinois Public Service for 50 years, Ellerman was the area manager at the time of his retirement May1, 1983. A lifetime honorary member of the Jerseyville Rotary Club, he was a member of the Lasonic Lodge for over 50 years. Ellerman was selected as the Jersey County Father of the Year in 1962. The Jerseyville Jaycees awarded him the Outstanding Leader award in 1963 and the Distinguished Service Award in1964. He was present treasurer of Jersey Community Hospital. Born in Quincy, he was the son on the late John H and Laura Dingerson Ellerman. On Oct 18, 1940 he married the former Helen Corcoran in St Louis and she survives. Also surviving are four daughters, Sandra Walker of Longwood, Fla, Judy Brickery of Collinsville, Mary Kinser of Pasadena, Texas and Susaon Braden of Carmi, Il and six grandchildren. Visitation will be 4-9 p.m. today at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville where Masonic Rites will be conducted at 7 p.m. by the Jerseyville Masonic Lodge 394 A. F. and A.M. At the First Presbyterian Church in Jerseyville visitation will continue from 9 a.m. Tuesday until the time of services at 11 a.m. The Rev. Simon A. Simon will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Jersey Community Hospital of to the church where he was member and served as trustee and treasurer.
ELLIOT. Eula Elliot, 92 who had resided with her daughter in Brighton, died Aug 9 at Jersey Community Hospital. Born in Girard, a daughter of the late Casper and Nancy Sprowell Smith, she married Monroe Elliot in 1919. He died in 1964. Leaves one daughter, Maurine Ribbing of Brighton, one son Morris Elliot of Medora, eight grandchildren two great grandchildren and one sister Harriet Lyons of Alton. Funeral from Warner Targhetta Chapel of Medora.
ELLIOT. Bernice Elliott, 75, of Dow, formerly of Alton, died at 10:35 p.m. Wednesday at St Anthony’s Hospital after a brief illness. She was employed in food services at the Catholic Children’s Home in Alton and retired in 1975 after 10 years of service. Born in Kane, daughter of the late Luther and Lola Scoggins Aulabaugh she married Keith E. Elliott on June 16, 1928 in Carrollton and he survives. Also surviving are two sons, Jerry C. and Michael E. both of Alton; eight grandchildren; wo brothers Wendell and Gale Aulabaugh, both of Alton and four sisters, Talma franciscus of Omaha, Neb, AltheaKeasler of Alton and Carole Sloan of Godfre and Jacqueline Dyslyn of Santa Clara, Calif. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where a prayer service will be read at 7 p.m. Friday. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday at St Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey, where she was a member, with Rev. James Hill as celebrant. Burial will be in Scenic Hill Cemetery in Grafton. Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society of Marquette High School of Alton.
ELLIOT. Mrs Cyrena Brownfield Elliott, wife of Lewis died a their home in Medora &5 years of age, Rev. Ollie Shields and Re. Henry Dixon. Leaves daughters Mrs S.L. Dodge, Medora, Mrs T. B. Ruyle of Kemper, son L.W. Elliott of Kemper Rose and Lou Elliott of Kemper and M.C. Elliott of Medora. The late Mrs. J. L. Tober of Kemper was a daughter.
ELLIOT. Harold B. Elliott, 73, of Lincoln, Il, formerly of the Medora area, died at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday Sept 24, 1986, at Lincoln Land Nursing Home. Elliott was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a school teacher at Kemper, Hawkins Prairie and Atlanta, Il. He was born in Chesterfield a son of the late Floyd R. and Beulah Lyon Elliott. On June 9, 1950 in Depew, Il he married the former Louis Moore who survives. Also surviving are a sister Barbara Scott of Alton and Strait Elliott of Jerseyville.
ELLIOT. Jimmie A. Elliott of Fontana, Calif, former resident of Jerseyville, was killed Wednesday night in a two-car crash on a freeway there as he was enroute home from his work at Kaiser Steel. Details of the crash were not known locally early this week. He as a son of Mr and Mrs Charles Elliott of Hemet, Calif and was born at Hammond, Indiana. Mr Elliott and his family left Jerseyville in Feb 1965 to make their home in Calif. While a resident here he was engaged in the decorating and contracting business with his brother-in-law, Charles Perdun. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs Charlotte Perdun Elliott, two daughters, Linda and Bonnie who reside at 9866 Pepper Ave, Fontana, his parents, and two brothers and three sisters. Mr Elliott was a son-in-law of Mrs Bonnie Perdun of Kane. Funeral services were held Saturday morning Oct 22 at 11 o’clock at Ingold Chapel in Fontana. Maurice Perdun of Brighton went to Calif to attend the final rites for his brother-in-law.
ELLIOT. Lewis Elliott, first supervisor of Ruyle Township died at home in Medora. 77 years. Born in Madison Co., moved to Jersey County where he was active in community affairs. Had left foot amputated few months before because of an injury. Leaves six children: Mrs T.B. Ruyle and Mrs Fred Dodge of Jerseyville, Misses Rose and Lulu Elliott of Medora, L.W. Elliott of Alton, Milton c. Elliott of Medora. Three other children and Mrs Elliott died several years ago. Burial in Medora Cemetery.
ELLIOT. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 11 at the Gent Funeral Home in Altonfor Lewis Walter Elliott whose death occurred Sunday, April 8 at 6 p.m. at the Mather Nursing Home in Alton. Death was from the infirmities of age. The body was taken to Medora for burial. Mr Elliott was born Aug 7, 1872 in Medora, a son of the late Lewis and Serena Elliott. During his early life farmed and 45 years ago moved to Alton where for several years he was employed at the Allen Keiser and Bauer and Hoehn Funeral Homes. He was married on Oct 14, 1896 to Miss Ida Moore, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs William Moore of Fidelity. His wife died in 1913 and a son, Dean in 1933. Surviving the decedent are a daughter, Mrs Hazel Bartold of Alton, three sons, Harold M. of Alton Neal R. of Collinsville and Vern B. of Presidia, Texas. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs Rena Dodge of Kemper and Mrs Dora Ruyle of Jerseyville a brother MiltonC. Elliott of Lawrence, Kansas.
ELLIOT. Mrs Stuart Parsell and Mrs Sam Stephenson of Jerseyville have returned to their homes from Lawrence, Kansas where they were called last week by the death of their uncle, Milton C. Elliott. Services were held in Lawrence Saturday morning. The death of Mr Elliott occurred Thursday at Olathe, Kansas. He was born in Jersey Co Aug 7, 1887 and resided in Kemper area until 1921 when the family moved to Kansas. His immediate survivors are daughters Mrs Frank (Dorothy) Swecker of Topeka, Mrs William (Rena) McGee of Olathe and Mrs Eldon (Mary Lou) Sneegas of Olathe and son Milton C, Jr. of Seattle, Wash. and one grandchild. His wife, Maria Smith Elliott preceded him in death. Mr Elliott was an uncle of Mrs Herbert C. Bertman of Jerseyville.
ELLIOT. Mrs Myrtle Flowers Elliott of 9311 Spring Stree, Highland, Indiana, who formerly resided in this area, died at 10:30 o’clock Wednesday, July 15 at St Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, Ind. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville where services were held at one-thirty p.m. on Saturday July 18, Rev William Smith pastor of Peace United Church of Christ in Jerseyville, officiated and burial was in Carter Cemetery at Carrollton. Mrs Elliott, a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Jesse Singleton was born in Illinois and her age at the time of death was sixty-oneyears, six months and twelve days. The deceased is survived by two daughters, Mrs Ruth Groppel of Fieldon and Mrs Delores Dawdy of Highland, Indiana and two sons, Robert Flowers of Alton and Earl Flowers, Jr of Tampa, Fla; fourteen grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs Grace Hyatt of Carrollton and Mrs Virgie Peters of Jerseyville and one brother Elmer Singleton of Peoria.
ELLIOT. Mrs Susie Helen Elliott died at her home, Dec 10, 1926, 48 years of age. She was the daughter of Milton and Catherine Edwards Emmons and born in Piasa Township of June 21, 1878. Leaves husband John V. Elliott, three daughters, Elsie, Irene, Nellie and one John V. Jr all of Jerseyville. Funeral was from Jacoby Bros Funeral Home with Rev. A. B. Carson officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. She married John Elliott on April 5, 1898. She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church. Leaves mother, 3 brothers and one sister, Louis Emmons of Summerville, Charles Emmons of Brighton Mrs Martha Abbott of Gillispie.
ELLIS. Funeral of Samuel C. Ellis held from his home in Elsah June 9, 1907 with Re. S. Albrecht serving. Born in Tennesse in 1824. Lived in Pennsylvania and Ohio before moving to Illinois. In the spring of 1846 enlisted in the Mexican War, joining Company G, 2nd Ohio regiment. After coming to Illinois, he located in Quarry Township, where he followed farming until 1872, when he moved to Otterville and later to Elsah. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Odd Fellows Lodge.
ELLISON. Margaret Lucille Ellison, 54, 637 Maurice, Wood River, died at 2:50 p.m. Monday at St Joseph’s Hospital, Alton after a brief illness. Born in Jerseyville, a daughter of Gladys King Davidson and the late James Ross Davidson, she married jams M. Ellison on June 3, 1949 at the Presbyterian Church, Wood River. Surviving in additionto her husband are a son, Mark of Bethalto, a grandson a brother Richard M Davidson of Bridgeton, Mo and a sister Eleanor Williams of Rosewood Heights. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Wednesday at Marks Mortuary where services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Manley Mace of Wood River officiating. Burial will be in Upper Alton Cemetery and memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society of the First Presbyterian Church of Wood River.
ELLISON. Dr J.W. Enos took his sick brother-in-law, Theodore Ellison of Minnesota to Fort Meyer, Florida where he died. His widow, Mrs Ida Ellison, is a Jerseyville lady and daughter of the late Dr. Charles Enos.
ELMORE. John Douglas Elmore died Saturday evening May 2 at 8:30 o’clock at his home in Kane following a lingering illness, He was 64 years, and 2 days old. Mr Elmore was the son of the late Douglas and Louisa Reno Elmore and was born near Kane on April 30, 1876. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Tilden and Fred, and three sisters, Louisa Pointer, Sadie Kruse and Jane Elmore. He was a member of King Solomon’s Lodge No 197 A.F.&A.M. of Kane and of the Kane Methodist Church. Mr Elmore was united in marriage to Alice Wright on Nov 8, 1899 and to this union one son John M. was born. Surviving him are his widow, onesone, John M. Elmore; one step-son Clarence Marshall; two step-daughters, Mrs O.R. McKee of St Louis and Mrs Lester Goodman of Chandler, Fla. seven grandchildren, Arlene, Janice, Carol Jean, Patsy and Richard Marshall. Funeral services were held Monday May 4 at 1:30 o’clock at the Kane Methodist Church. Rev. Donald Harmon officiated and interment was in the Kane Cemetery. A quartet composed of Mr and Mrs Walter Brown and Mr and Mrs Thomas Roady sang “It Is Well With My Soul” and “Does Jesus Care”. The flower bearers were Mrs Arthur Warren, Miss Marjorie Giberson. Arlene Marshall, Mrs Clarence Marshall, Mrs George Marshall and Mrs Kenneth Marshall. The pallbearers were Harold, George, Kenneth and Clarence Marshall, Jr, Marshall Ray McKee and Robert Elmore. The rites at the grave were in charge of the Masonic Chapter with Charles Kesaley as reader.
ELMORE. John Marshall Elmore of Kane, a retired carpenter, died unexpectedly Saturday, march 9 at his home. Funeral rites were held Mar 11 at the United Methodist Church of Kane and interment was in Kane Cemetery. his survivors are a daughter, Mrs Delbert (Georgia) Allen of Kane, a son Robert Elmore of Kane seven grandchildren and greatgrandson, a half-brother, Clarence Marshall of Kane, and two half-sisters, Mrs Etta Baker and Mrs Flora McKee of Florida. His wife, The former Lah Vesta Reno died in 1962.
ELY. Private funeral services were held for Mrs Alma Simmons Ely, a former Jerseyville resident, on March 14, at Pacific View Memorial Park, Newport Beach, Calif with interment in Memorial Park there. Her death occurred March 10th at Santa Ana, Calif where she had resided for the past few years. Mrs Ely was a daughter of the late Mrand Mrs William H Simmons of Jersey County. Her husband was the late Fred Isaac Ely. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs Douglas (Mary Ann) Ogilvie; one grandson; one sister, Mrs George Fry and a brother William Simmons of Leisure Island, Calif.
ELY. Funeral services for Arthur LeRoy Ely, 89 year old retired Jersey County farmer were held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Mr Ely was a member of the Jerseyville Methodist Church and the pastor, Rev. Louis Purcell conducted the services. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mr Wly, whose home was at 313 E. Spruce Street, this city died Thursday afternoon, January 26, at 1:10 p.m. at Garnet’s Nursing Home where he had resided for almost two months. Mr Ely was a son of the late Archibald F. and Adelia Miner ely and was born in Jersey County on May 22, 1877. His marriage to Miss Madge Cornelius took place on Feb 8, 1910. He is survived by his wife, one son Homer F. Ely of Waukegan, one granddaughter, Mrs Rebecca McDonald of Syracuse, NY and two great granddaughters. Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were one sister, Mrs Alma Porter and two brothers, Miner and Richard Ely.
ELY. Miss Fannie A. Ely victim of consumption died at home in Fidelity. Remains brought to Jerseyville Cemetery and placed beside those of her father who died 19 years ago of the same disease. Born April 5, 1867. funeral from Methodist Church at Fidelity, Rev. J.B. House, of Bunker Hill. Pallbearers were: Will Dodge, John Marshall, Arthur Smith, harve Peters, Harry Voorhees, and Sherman McCollister.
ELY. George I. Ely died at his home two miles north of Jerseyville. 56 years. Funeral from Methodist Church, Rev. O.L. Markman. Burial under auspices of Hickory Grove Camp. Leaves wife and five children, Walter C. Issac, Cornelius, Etta and Mrs E.H. Mayes. Born in Jersey Co Dec 15, 1855, married Matilda Moss of Fidelity. In 1892 moved to Jerseyville. ME Church. One brother Firman Ely of Fidelity and one sister Mrs Margaret Hardy of Jacksonville.
ELY. Gilbert T. Ely born in Jerseyville in 1854 and died in Brighton Feb 12, 1904. Married Gussie Massey in 1890 and moved to Brighton and into hotel business. Ourchased Palace Hotel In Virden. Later to Eureka Sorings, Ark. Returned to Il and bought hotel in Bunker Hill. Leaves wife and two little sons, eldest child, a son died infancy. Funeral from St Francis Church. Re. Lee. Buried in Jerseyville Cemetery.
ELY. The funeral of Helen Ely of 4101 Potomac, St Louis was conducted July 29 at Fridens in St Louis. Her death occurred on July 27 at the Jerseyville Care Center. She was born March 29, 1900, a daughter of John and Rose Mahl Keller.
ELY. Homer F. Ely, 75, of Hopedale, Il formerly of Alton, died at 8:51a.m. Friday July 31, 1987 at Hopedale Hospital. Ely was a schoolteacher for 43 years, teaching music and business education in Alton, Hopedale and Waukegan schools and Bradley University at Peoria. He was born in Fidelity; so of the late Roy and Madge Cornelius Ely. One June 16 1940 in Peoria, he married the former Cleo M. Hieser. Surviving include his wife; one daughter, Rebecca Jane McDonald of San Diego, Calif; and two granddaughters. Services were conducted at 10 a.m. today at Hopedale United Methodist Church. Burial was at Shiloh Cemetery in Hopedale. Memorials may be sent to the Hopedale United Methodist Church where he was a member. Davis Mortuary of Hopedale was in charge of arrangements.
ELY. Isaac E. Ely, a son of the late Richard R. Ely of Jersey, who was born and reared near Fidelity was shot and killed by Villa followers at Ebano, Mexico on May 7 according to a message which was received here Saturday by his 82 years old mother. Ely owned oil fields near Ebano and a coffee plantation near Tampico. A year ago, when the situation in Mexico became critical, Ely and his family went to the US. Six months ago, however, he returned to Mexico. Soon after that he wrote his mother in Jersey that his plantation had been raided, his horses stolen, and his yacht sunk and other personal property taken. That was the last letter Mrs Ely received from her son. He was 62 years old.
ELY. Isaac R. Ely born in Monmouth Co, NJ Jan 13, 1824. Came to Jersey Co at the age of 13 and was last one of the original settlers of the Paradise Neighborhood. Married Miss Mar A. Christopher in 1846. Three sons, two survive. ME Church at Fidelity. Loving and devoted father, Strong believer in simplicity and avoided all display in everything with which he had to do. Good Christian. Funeral from Me Church. Rev J. G. Dee serving.
ELY. Services were conducted Dec 31 at Gent Chapel in Alton for Kenneth L. Ely, 59 of 5006 Michael Drive, Godfrey. The Rev. Robert Bowling officiated. he died at 2:46 a.m. Dec 29 at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born in piasa, the son of the late Richard and Maude Gardner Ely and married the former Elizabeth Schetter in Alton in 1946. He was employed as a chemist for Laclede Steel Co. for 30 years until his retirement in 1972. His survivors are his wife; three daughters, Marily Schook of Hemet, Calif, Marge Mathus of High Ridge, Mo and Marie at home; one son, Richard of Alton; four grandchildren; one sister, Frances Fullager of Hemet, Calif and a brother Herbert of dow. The Cherry Street Baptist Church has been named as a memorial.
ELY. Mrs Madge Ely, 93, died at 9:55 a.m. May 13 at Garnet’s Chateau where she had resided since Aug 1975. She was born Dec 18, 1885 in East Newbern, a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs H.S. Cornelius. Her husband, Roy Ely whom she married Feb 8, 1910 died Jan 21, 1967. The Elys resided in Fidelity for many years. Mrs Ely was active in both the Fidelity and Jerseyville Methodist Churchs as long as her health permitted, had formerly assisted the Fidelity 4-H girls with their projects for several years and was a member of the Jersey County Women’s Christian Temperance Union. She is survived by one son, Homer F. Ely of Hopedale, Il and grandchild and two great-grandchildren. Three sisters, Mrs Ruth Keehner of Jerseyville, Mrs Jessie Kelly and Mrs Harriett Teetzel both of Oak View, Calif. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gubser Funeral Home until the time of services at 1 p.m. The Rev R.E. George will officiate and burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. The United Methodist Church of which she was a member has been designated as a memorial.
ELY. Mary A. Christopher Ely, daughter of John and Jane Christopher born in Preble Co, Ohio Nov 19, 1827 and came with family to Il in fall of 1843,locating 3 miles north of Jerseyville and then to a farm two miles SE of Jerseyville. She witnessed development of county from the raw, unbroken prairie lands to the modern ell-equipped farms of present day. Converted to ME Church. Rev John Gillham at Fidelity. Isaac died May 1904. Devoted to church–her hand ever open to needs of others. Of retiring and reservednature. Her eldest son died in 1900. Had three children. Leaves A.F. Ely of Fidelity and George I. She died at 6:50 a.m. Oct 16 at the home of her son Herbert Ely, R.R.1 Dow. Born May 23, 1890 in Elkcreek, Neb. she was the daughter of Asa F. and Frances Vanlaningham Gardner. Mrs Ely was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church at Dow. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs Herbert (Frances) Fullagar of Hermet, Calif and two sons, Kenneth L. Ely of Godfrey and Herbert L. of Dow; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Her parents, seven brothers and a sister preceded her in death. She was the daughter of Wm K and Mary Anne Miner, pioneer residents of Fideliy. Attended Monticello Seminary at Godfrey, Il. Mrs Ely fostered plan of holding annual reunion of six girlhood chums wo attended school under the tutelage of late Stroud Keller. She was the first of the six to pass away. Surviving members are Mrs C.A. Rice of Medora, Mrs James Bringhurst, Mrs T.B. Aydelott and Mrs Anna Birkenmayer of Fidelit and Mrs Rispa Hudson of Louisville, Ky. She was a talented writer and was known as the community obiturian,. Married Archibald Forman Ely on Oct 3, 1872. He was born and reared in Jersey County They were married 52 years. Leave the following children: Arthur Leroy, Richard Forman of Fidelity, Mrs Alma Wilmarth Porter, wife of William Porter, Springfield, Il and Miner Isaac Ely of Milwaukee, Wis.; two sisters, Mrs Margaret dodge of Jerseyville and Miss Alma Miner of Alton. One sister Mrs May Holdn and one brother Fred Miner preceded ger. Miss Mary Apps, to whom the ely home was opened 48 years ago when she was orphaned, has resided with the Elys since that time.

ELY. Mrs Tillie M. Ely, 86 year old Jerseyville resident, died Friday February 7, at the home of her daughter, Mrs Cyrus Mowen, on West Pearl Street. The decedent was the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Frederick Moss and she was born in Bunker Hill. Her age at the time of death was 86 years, 5 months, and 1 day. Mrs Ely lived in Jersey County for many years later residing in Jacksonville and Winchester. She returned to Jersey County about eight yeas ago to make her home with Mrs Mowen. Surviving the age woman in addition to Mrs Mowen are three sons, Walter Ely of Chicago, Fred Ely of Los Angeles, Calif. and Neal Ely of Tampa, Texas, and two granddaughters Mrs Edward Roady of Jerseyville and Miss Mary Ann Ely of Los Angeles, Calif. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon Feb 10 at the Gubser Funeral Home. Rev. David B. Maxton, past or of the Presbyterian Church, officiated at the rites and interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery.
EMBLEY. Alvin V. Embley, senior member of the firm of Embley and Son Plumbers, 406 Maple Avenue of Jerseyville and the oldest of Jerseyville people died at eleven-thirty o’clock Sunday morning at the Jersey Community Hospital where he had been a patient for nearly two months. Funeral services were held at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon April 30 at the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville with the Rev. Carlton Christenson officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Mr Embley, a son of the late George and Susan Schuyler Embley was a lifelong resident of Jerseyville. His age at the time of death was eighty-three years, one month and twenty-three days. He waswell known in political circles of the city, two terms as city clerk. Associated with father, William, architect and many handsome businesses and homes in Jersey County as in many other counties, were designed by the firm of W.A. and A.N. Embley.
EMBLEY. The body of Frank W. Embley, whose death occurred at his home at Auburn, Tuesday Jan 21, 1908, was brought to this city for burial. The funeral services will be held from the home of his father, William Embley, on East Arch Steet at 2 o’clock this afternoon, with Rev. W.W. Hicks officiating. The Masonic, Woodman and Court of Honor Lodges, of which the deceased was a member, will attend the services. Mr Embley was reared in this city and had charge of the C & A Ry. station here for a number of years. He removed with his family to Auburn two years ago where he was agent for the same Co.

Carl C. Moman officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs Embley was born in Greene County Aug 17, 1182 a daughter of the late James and Nettie Lanham. Her age at the time of death was seventy-six years, seven months and twenty-two days, When her health permitted Mrs Embley was active in the work of the Baptist Church and for many years was a Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of the Ruby Rebekah Lodge. EMBLEY. Mrs Susan Schulyer Embley only daughter of Aaron and Grace Norton Schuyler, was born March 13, Hightstown, NJ; was married to George W. Embley, Feb 10th, 1858, died at her home 2 1/2 miles north of Jerseyville, Oct 13th, 1906 at 1:08 a.m. Mrs Embley was the mother of twelve children, two sons and ten daughters, eight children awaited her home in Heaven. Five are buried at Heightstown, NJ three in Jerseyville, Il, namely; William, Norton, Laura, Sarah, Elizabeth, Lily, Mary, Ada and Grace. In March 1877 she, her husband and four children moved on a farm near Jerseyville where they have since reside. She was the best, most loving wife and mother, devoting her entire time to her family. Her only brother, John Schuyler, preceded her eight years ago. An invalid husband, one son, Alvin V., three daughters, Susie S. wife of H.W. Smock, Georgiana, wife of Chars. Gamerdinger and Irene, four grandchildren and one niece are left to mourn their loss.
EMBLEY. William Embley born on a farm in Mercer Co, NJ Dec 25, 1826. He chose profession of architecture and followed it all his life. On Dec 14, 1848, he married Mary Elizabeth Perrine at Perrinesville, NJ. Came west in 1854 with his wife and three children: Mary Lavina, 5, John Perrine, 3,and Joseph Elwood, 8 months. While enroute the exposed to scarlet fever, contracted the disease and during the first week of his residence here, the three died within four days of one another. Grief stricken and among strangers, the young couple in the true spirit of pioneers, bravely went ahead with their plans and soon endured themselves to their fellow townsmen. Three more children were born: William Franklin, Augustus Newell and Alta Leah, all of whom have preceded their father to the Great Beyond. Aside from one year spent in Calif., and one and one-half years in East St Louis, Mr Embley has lived continuously in Jerseyville since he first came in 1854. Many of the buildings that stand here and in nearby cities as monuments to his skill as a designer and his integrity as a superintendent of construction. The Colonial Hotel was his last building and although old and feeble, he insisted upon inspecting the material and directing the work as was his want in all cases. In 1906 his wife died but he continued the old home with his daughter-in-law, Mrs Rosa B. Embley of this city and her son Elwood. Death again entered the home the following year taking the grandson. Survived by two daughters-in-law, Mrs Rosa B. Embley of Jerseyville and Mrs Ruth B. Embley of Alton. Two grandsons, Harville Embley of Indianapolis, Ind and Newwll Embley of Cleburne, Texas; Three nieces, Mrs H.W. Smock, Mrs Charles Gamindinger, Miss Irene Embley and one nephew, Alvin Embley all of Jerseyville.

ENGLISH. Hon. John N. English, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Jerseyville, died at his residence last Monday night at 10 o’clock, after an illness often days. He was a native of Kentucky. His parents removed to Washington Co, Il in 1820 and five years later made their home in this county, where Mr English has ever since resided. He took an active part in the BlackHawk Wa, receiving in addition to his pay of $1 per day, 80 acres of land. After the war he was employed in surveying about Lake Michigan. In 1834 he entered land in Jersey County and engaged in farming. He was the first sheriff of this county and served a second term. He afterward ran a saw and grist mill in what is now English Township, and in 1847 bought a farm in richwoods, which he carried on until he moved to Jerseyville in 1867. He was always a democrat and in 1860 was elected to the legislature and served three consecutive terms. Mr English was first married in 1840 to Elizabeth Belt, daughter of H.N. Belt of this county. She died in 1872. In 1873 he married Mrs Catherine Sibly, widow of John Sibly of Jersey County. Three children survive him, Lloyd. John N., Jr., and Robert. Col English was a fine specimen of physical manhood, being over 6 feet in height and finely proportioned. He was erect and vigorous till his last sickness. He was genial and social in his intercourse with his fellow men and was universally esteemed. His was the most familiar figure upon the streets of Jerseyville and he will be widely and sadly missed. At the time of his death Mr English was 78 years, 4 months, and 20 days. The funeral will take place at the family residence this afternoon, Rev. Scarritt officiating.

LIFE-LONG FRIEND DELIVERS EULOGY. Illness Follows Retirement After Business Career of More Than 40 YearsProminent Churchman.
John N. English, for many years a well-known and highly respected business man of Jerseyville and prominent official and worker in the First M.E. church, died suddenly at his residence in this city Sunday, July 4, at 1 a.m. of a heart attack, at the age of 74 years, 4 months and 15 days.
His passing came as a shock to his relatives and multitude of friends in Jerseyville and Jersey county, who were not aware of his failing physical condition. Some ten days ago, he suffered a severe heart attack, his illness being of such a serious nature that Rev. and Mrs. W. S. Neely of Aubutn, Ill., who had been visiting in the English home prior to the departure for Colorado, were called back after starting for the West.
Mr. English apparently recovered from the illness and had during the last week made his usual trips to the Taylor-Brannan hardware store, a business shrine from which he found it difficult to separate after disposing of his financial interests and retiring. For more than forty years Mr. English had been actively engaged in the hardware business in Jerseyville. Saturday found him at his old post of duty.
About 1 oclock Sunday morning he was seized with a heart attack. Local physicians were called, but he had succumbed before they arrived.Funeral Held Tuesday
Many of Jerseyvilles business houses were closed Tuesday afternoon for an hour out of respect to the deceased fellow merchant, while hundreds of friends attended his funeral, held at 2:30 oclock in the First M.E. church. Rev. O.B. Kinsey, pastor of the church officiated, assisted by Rev. Harold S. Farrill, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Musical selections were by a quartette composed of Frenk A. Fesenmeyer, George Senior, Dr. J. G. Schwarz and John Beaty. Floral tokens of love and respect were in great number and a rare loveliness. As a mark of respect to their teacher, the members of the young ladies; class of the M. E. Sunday school attended the services in a body. One section of the church also was occupied by the members of the local W. C. T. U., of which Mr. English was an honorary member. The burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. The following were pall bearers: Elmer Lanham, Judge W. T. Sumner, Roy Taylor, J. A. Bran . . . . Cause of Christ, and took deep interest in the Sunday School and church affairs, being one of the most constant members in attendance in that church, and of him may well and truly be said Soldier of Christ, well done. Mr. English was not one to rush through his religious life because he knew
Heaven is not reached at a single bound,
But we build the ladder by which we rise
From the lowly earth to the vaulting skies,
And we mount to its summit round by round.
Quiet and unassuming as he was he gathered about himself a host of true and tried friends, for he always favored the uplifting of home and city. He was a firm believer in the Bible and felt with the powet, George P. Morris, regarding this book:
Thou truest friend man ever knew,
They constancy Ive tried,
When all were false Ive found thee true,
My counselor and guide.
The Mines of earth no treasures give
That could this Bible buy,
In teaching me thie way to life,
It taught me how to die.
His life on this earth was an honest and religious one and we are all assured of his hereafter. To his bereaved ones we can but say:
The Healer is here and his arms are around,
And He leads with His tireless care,
And Hell show you a star in the brigh tupper worls,
Tis His star shining brilliantly there.
You have each heard a voice, Tis the voice of your God,
I love thee, I love thee, pass under the rod.
There is a word of grief the sounding token,
There is a word bejewelled with sad tears,
The saddest word fond lips have ever spoken
A little word that breaks the chain of years,
Its utterance must ever bring emotioni,
The memories it carries cannot die,
Tis known in every land, on every ocean,
Tis calledGoodbye.
While this is true, it does not apply here for it means a short time to many of us before we will meet him where there is no more death and the word goodbye is never heard. We cherish his memory here, his body we consign to the earth, but the spirit has returned to God who gave it.
Mr. English believed as I believe with the poet who said:
Tell me not in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream.
And the soul is dead that slumbers
And things are not as them seem.
Life is real, life is earnest,
And the grave is not its goal,
Dust thou art to dust returnest,

English was the son of the late John Nelson English, who was one of the pioneers of this county, coming here in 1825 and in 1813 enlisted in the Black Hawk War. In 1847 he bought a farm in what was the called the “West Woods” in English Township where the subject of this sketch was born. I became acquainted with the deceased, when as a carpenter I worked building thepoor house which was erected on the grounds of the present one in English Township in 1869 and I boarded with Mrs English’s uncle Rev. John H. Belt, and he with his brother, Lloyd often came there and we attended the night spelling schools in Central schoolhouse, John then being 17 years of age. His father was sheriff 1839, also elected to the Legislature in 1860 and re-elected a second term. Mr English born Feb 19, 1852 and married Fannie Henderson, daughter of Richmond Henderseon, also one of the pioneer settles of this county. Married Jan 27, 1876. He leaves widow, an adopted daughter, Mrs W.S. Neely of Auburn and one brother, Lloyd. His father was interested in bringing Jersey County into existence for he rode all over the country on horseback getting subscribers to petition that was necessary to separate this county from Greene and he was elected its first sheriff. Mr English father in 1840 when he was 30 years of age married Elizabeth Belt, daughter of Horatio Belt, and four boys were born to them, Thomas, Lloyd, John and Robert B. all of whom except Lloyd have passed away. Mr English, Sr. having died Aug 25, 1880. In 1887 John N. purchased the interest of the Egelhoff boys and started business on the corner of Pearl and Jefferson Streets called English and Eaton.

ENGLISH. Word was received in Jerseyville of the death of Revel Lindsey English, former Jerseyville resident, which occurred June 28, at his home in Tujunga, Calif. where he and Mrs English, the former Katherine Solano, had lived for several years. Funeral services were held July 1 a the Bade Mortuary in Tujunga with Dr John a Andrew Holmes, a former pastor of the Westside Congregational Church of Pasadena officiating. Interment was in Tujunga. Mr English, a native of Kane, where he was born Feb 20, 1880, was a noted horseman and his services were often in demand as a judge for horse shows through out the country. He had only recently been serving in this capacity in the midwest. Excerpts from the account of Mr English’s death which appeared in the Pasadena Star-News are “Pasadena friends and acquaintances remember him as a singer who took and active part in the musical life of the city to which he came at the turn of the century. He had been a member of the Castle Square Opera Company of Boston and of the Savage Grand Opera Company as a leading baritone. He had concertized in Eastern states and throughout the West. In Pasadena he was a teacher in singing, a choir director and soloist. Mr English was national known as a horseman and much in demand for horse shows. For a decade he had been in charge of the equestrian division of the Tournament of Roseds Parade when that division was a notable feature of the pageant some years ago. He was winner in one of the exciting chariot races held in Tournament Park on New Year’s Day, antedating the football games. For a number of years he was a writer for several outstanding magazines dealing with horses.”

ENNIS. Herbert Elmer Ennis, 55 year old Grafton resident, died Wednesday afternoon, Feb 21, at 2:16 o’clock at the Jersey Community Hospital where he had been a patient for forty-four days. Mr Ennis was a flour mill employee. Funeral services were held at half-past one o’clock Friday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. James Pepper, pastor of the Bible Baptist Church in Jerseyville officiating. Interment was in Meadow Branch Cemetery in the Grafton area. Visitation hours were held at the Funeral Home. Mr Ennis, a son of the late Herbert Albert Ennis, was born at East Hardin on April 8, 1912. He is survived by his wife, Mrs Ada Belle Lewis Ennis, one son, Kenneth Ennis and one daughter, Mrs Aaron Weid all of Grafton; three step-sons, Robert Morris of Grafton, Delton Morris and Bernard Morris both of Alton and three step-daughters Mrs Paul Wallace and Mrs Donald Harshbarger of Grafton and Mrs Robert Knight of Alton. 33 grandchildren, four sisters, Mrs Albert Calame of Aaalton, Mrs Rodiville Davis of Brighton, Mrs Edward Lyons of Baton Rouge, LA and Mrs Frank Watson of Grafton. and one brother, Thomas Ennis of Alton His parents, one son, Herbert Henry Ennis, one sister, Angie Ennis Fenton and one brother, Edward Ennis, preceded him in death.

EPSTEIN. Mrs Minnie Heitzig Epstein, a native of Jersey County, died Friday June 28 at Boonville, Mo at the age of 96 years, 3 months and 26 days. The body was brought to Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville Friday where friends called until the hour of the funeral service. Services were held at 9 o’clock Saturday Morning July 1 at St Mary’s Church, West Woods, Father O.J. Wernet was celebrant of the Reqiem Mass and interment was in St Mary’s Cemetery. Mrs Epstein was a daughter of the late Christopher and Wilhelmena Schaaf Heitzig and was born in Jersey County Mar 2, 1860.
ERB. Final rites for Mrs Anna M. Erb, 85, were conducted yesterday May28, at Gubser Funeral Home with the Rev. Everett Chambers officiating. She died at 2:45 p.m. on May 26 at Hazel Memorial Baptist Home in Virden where she had resided since September 1968. Interment was in the Oak Grove Cemetery. She was born on April 19, 1890 in fieldon, a daughter of the late Fred and Marie Cappel Engel. Her husband, George Erb, died in April 1968.
ERB. Clarence Erb, 80, of Castle Rock, Colorado, formerly of Edwardsville, died at 4:15 a.m. Tuesday March 29, 1988, in Castle Rock. He was born in Jersey County, son of the late Charles and Mary Williams Erb. In addition to his wife, Helen Marie Erb, surviving are a daughter Shirley Lear of Castle Rock; three grandchildren and threebrothers, George and Ray Erb both of Edwardsville and Marion Erb of South Roxana. He was preceded in death by a son, Vernon Erb and a brother Charles Erb. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at Pletcher Funeral Home in Edwardsville. Erb, lifelong resident of Jersey County and a charter member of the Jersey County Farm Bureau, died at nine-five o’clock at Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton where he had been a patient since Saturday. he had been in ill health for some time. Visitation hours are being held at the Gubser Funeral Home where services are to be held at 0ne-thirty o’clock this afternoon. Rev. Carlton Christernson will officiate and burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mr Erb, long-time grain and dairy farmer, was born in Jersey County July 16, 1887 a son of the late Henry G. and Sophia Hooper Erb. His age at the time of death was eighty years, nine months, and thirteen days. He is a former president of the Jersey County Produce Association. Surviving Mr Erb are his wife, Anna and two sons, Dr Ralph Erb of West Lafayette, Indiana and Paul Erb of Jerseyville;one sister Mrs Peter Poeling of Wordon and one grandson.
ERB. Marion F. Erb died at 8:25 p.m. Thursday Sept 7, 1989 at Anderson Hospital, Maryville, after a short illness. Erb retired form Laclede Steel Co. of Alton as a crane operator in the tube mill. Born in Jersey County, he was the son of the late Charles and Mary Williams Erb. On June 20, 1940 in St Louis he married the former Joyce Gross. She survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Carol Rusher of Effingham and a son Darrell Erb of South Roxana; two grandchildren; a brother, George Erb of Edwardsville. Three brothers, Winfield, Clarence and Raymond preceded him in death. Graveside services are 11 a.m. Monday at Wanda Cemetery in South Roxana. Gray Funeral Home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements.
ERB. Ralph E. Erb, 66, of Olympia, Wash. died at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Olympia Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born In Jersey County, son of the late George and Anna Engel Erb. He was college professor and administrator who retired in 1978 from Purdue University. He was a World War II Navy veteran serving in the South Pacific. He married the former Rosetta Roodhouse in 1941 and she survives. Also surviving are a son George Edward of Seattle, Wash and a brother Paul of Jerseyville. Following cremation the remains will be interred in a local Olympia, Wash. cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville was in charge of the local arrangements.
ERB. Raymond Erb, 74, died Saturday, June 18, 1988 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville. Born in Jerseyville, he was the son of the late Charles and Mary Williams Erb. On Sept 16, 1939 he married the former Catherine Dresch in Edwardsville. She survives. Also surviving are two sons Dennis Erb of Mahomet and Ronald Erb of Chantilly, VA;a daughter Sharon Simmons of Fairmount City; four grandchildren and two brothers, George Erb of Edwardsville and Marion Erb of South Roxana. Two brothers preceded him in death. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. today at Pletcher Funeral Home in Edwardsville, where services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. ERB. Mrs Sophia Erb, a resident of Jersey County for many years, died Saturday, Sept 1, at the home of her daughter, Mrs Cyrus Baldwin in Chicago. Mrs Erb had made her home in Chicago for the past 10 years. The decedent was a daughter of the late George and Dorothy Hoffmaster Hooper and was born in Jersey County May 4, 1864. Her ageat the time of death was eighty-seven years, three months, and twenty-eight days. The aged woman is survived by two sons, George Erb of Jerseyville and Henry Erb of Chicago, and two daughters, Mrs Cyrus Baldwin of Chicago and Mrs Peter Poeling of West Alton, Missouri. she also leaves six grandchildren. Mrs Erb was the widow of Gottlieb Erb, a blacksmith at Dow for many years. The body was brought to Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville where friends called until the funeral. Funeral services were held at the Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon, Sept 4 at 2 o’clock. Rev. Gerald Bock of Peace United Evangelical and Reformed Church officiated and interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery.
ERDMAN. Mr Erdman, an employee of Shell Oil Company for twenty years, was an operator in the Lub Extraction department. He was a son of the late Emiel and Ella Lehmann Erdman and was born in Husterford, Wisconsin. He had resided in Jerseyville about 30 years. At the time of his death he was aged fifty years, one month and twenty-two days. ERWIN. Dr A.D. Erwin of Fidelity, Jersey Co, practicing physician of eastern Jersey and Macoupin Co, died in fidelity as a result of an accidental shot in the head. He had gone to make call on Mrs Harry Voorhees, who was injured last week when the team she was driving to a harrow in the field ran away dragging her across the field and breaking her limb. Dr Erwin’s brother, Walter Erwin, and Frank Pruitt accompanied him and stopped to hunt in a wood near the road while the doctor made his professional call. As party was about to return home, Dr Erwin in the front seat at the wheel, Mr Pruitt was putting the guns in the tonneau of the car. In some manner, one of the guns accidentally discharged, the bullet entering Dr Erwin’s head at the base of the brain. Taken to his home he passed away about 7 o’clock. Dr H.R. Bohannan and Dr N.F. Bray called from Jerseyville and Dr Perry Erwin a brother of the deceased from Medora. Dr Gledhill was also summoned but was out on a call. Two Alton doctors called. He was 60 years of age. ERWIN. Funeral services for Charles B. Erwin 66, of Alton formerly of Jersey County were conducted Saturday morning at Gent Funeral Home in Alton with burial in Upper Alton Cemetery. His death occurred April 25 at St Joseph’s Hospital, Alton. Mr Erwin had retired a year ago, due to ill health from Daycoa, Inc where he was a representative for seven years. He was born Mar 28, 1907, the son of the late John L. and Mary Alice Borer Erwin. Mr Erwin was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church. His Survivors are his wife, the former Freda Thorpe, a son, Jack F, of Rochester, Minn; four brothers, James of Jerseyville, Norman, Owen and Lawrence all of Fieldon; and three sisters, Mrs Arabelle Bunse of Jerseyville, Mrs Evelyne Goshorn of Summerville, S.C. and Marietta Devening of Dow. Mr Erwin, a son ofthe late John L. and Alice Borer Erwin, was born in Jersey County July 39, 1899. She had been in ill health for and extended time and had been at the home of her daughter, Mrs Gordon Gilbert in Whittier, Calif for a few weeks. She was born May 4, 1905 at Rosedale, a daughter of Ezra and Leona Crull. Mrs Erwin was a member the First Baptist Church of Jerseyville and of the Tried and True Sunday School Class and the Jerseyville Senior Citizens. Her husband, Thomas Erwin died Feb 12, 1975. Her survivors are her daughter, Mrs Gordon (Ruth Sunderland) Gilbert of Whittier, Calif; four stepchildren, Paul and Donald Erwin of Jerseyville, Mrs Florence Woodward of Granite City, and Mrs Betty Goodfellow of Cumberland, Md; 10 grandchildren; ten great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild. Also surviving are three brothers, Robert and Paul Crull of Rosedale and Warren Crull of Jerseyville; three sisters, Mrs Dorothy Hunter of E St Louis, Mrs Mildred Bolster and Mrs Alma June Pummel of Alton. A stepson Randle Erwin preceded her in death. Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Jacoby Funeral Home and Saturday until 1 p.m. when the body will be moved to the church.

ERWIN. Miss Harriet B. Erwin, 94 year old retired Jerseyville school teacher died Thursday evening Oct 6 at 10:40 o’clock at the Jersey Community Hospital where she had been a patient for six weeks. Miss Erwin, who spent forty-four years in the teaching profession, retired in 1937. She taught about forty years in Jerseyville Grade School, first as a fourth grade teacher and later as an arithmetic instructor in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. For many years Miss Erwin maintained her home on East Arch street but for the past eight years she has resided at the Gledhill home, 108 N. Lafayette. She was a daughter of the late J.G. and Mary Cockrell Erwin and was born on a farm west of Jerseyville, April 15, 1872. Her age at the time of death was 94 years, 5 months, and 21 days. Miss Erwin was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jerseyville for seventy-two years and for a number of years a member of the church choir. She has no immediate survivors. Friends called at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where funeral services where held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock with the Rev. Carlton Christenson, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiated, Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery.

White of Kane, one brother, E.O. Richards of Calif; three small grandchildren, Erwin, Lois and Phyllis Seago. In 1886she joined Lebanon Baptist Church. Later to Jerseyville Baptist. 64 years old. Mrs Erwin was the widow of Hon Erwin who died sixteen years ago. The deceased was a daughter of the late Columbus and Fannie Brooks Borer and was born in Jersey County, Aug 21, 1879. Her age at the time of death was seventy-four years, two months and seventeen days. Surviving Mrs Erwin are seven sons, Clarence of Kane, Walter of Grafton, Charles of Alton, Owen, Norman, Ames and Lawrence of Fieldon; three daughters, Mrs William Goshorn of Muscatine, Iowa, Mrs Mark Devening of Dow, and Mrs Arabelle Bunse of Jerseyville, fifteen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Gubser Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon, Nov 10 at 2 o’clock and interment was in the Grimes Cemetery.
ERWIN. Muriel M. Erwin, 88, of Medora died at 1:30 p.m. June 8 at her residence. Born in Jersey County, daughter of the late William and Margaret Mclcahey Moore, she married Paul Erwin on Jan 27, 1917 and he died in 1978. She is survived by one daughter, Kathryn Wedding of Medora; and one granddaughter. Visitation was at Warner-Targhetta Funeral Home in Medora, where a prayer services was read. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St Johns Catholic Church in Medora with Rev. T.J. Davenport as celebrant. Burial was in Medora Cemetery and memorials are suggested to masses of the American Heart Association.

Burial was in Scenic Hill Cemetery. She was found dead at her residence at 9:50 a.m. July 30. She was born Jan 4, 1905 in Grafton, a daughter of Frank and Lucy Austin LaMarch. Her husband was the late Walter “Duke” Erwin. She is survived by one son, Darward Erwin of Godfrey; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; a brother, Tony LaMarsh of Alton; and one sister Hattie Schleeper of Wood River. The rosary was recited Friday evening at Jacoby Funeral Home.

On April 19, 1958 in field on he married the former Florence Catherine Schleeper, who survives. Also surviving are four stepsons, Edwin Garrison of Sparks, Nev., Thomas Garrison of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Paul Garrison of Wood River and Robert Garrison of Alton. a stepdaughter, Barbara Cain of Jerseyville; 10 step-grandchildren, and three brothers, Owen “Rich” Erwin, Lawrence “Chick” Erwin both of fieldon and Jim Erwin of Jerseyville. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Jacoby Funeral Home in Jerseyville where a rosary will be recited at 7;30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Fieldon with the Rev. William Hembrow as celebrant. Burial will be at St Francis Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

Heinen as celebrants. He died at 9:15 p.m. Oct 8 at his residence. He was born May 21, 1914 in Jersey County to the late Thomas and Eugenia Smith Erwin. Erwin was in maintenance at the Peavey Mill. He was a member of the Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Moose Lodge and the American Legion. His survivors are his wife, the former Florence “Toad” Horn whom he married Aug 22, 1942 in Jerseyville, a son Tom and daughter Judy Smith of Jerseyville, sister Florence Woodward of Granite City and Bettie Goodfellow of LaVale, MD and seven grandchildren. The Jerseyville American Legion conducted military rites at St Francis Cemetery.

ERWIN. Word was received by Mrs Cluver Stillman of this city Monday that her father, S. James Erwin, died in his sleep earlier that morning at his residence in Mountain Home, Arkansas. He was found by his wife, Minetta. The decedent was a retired cabinetmaker and was born in Jersey County January 16, 1889 the son of the late J. Douglas and Rhoda Rowden Erwin and spent most of his life in this area. About two years ago Mr and Mrs Erwin moved to Arkansas from Edwardsville. Surviving Mr Erwin, in addition to his only daughter and his wife are a brother, Thomas D. Erwin and two sisters, Mrs Egene Witt also of Jerseyville and Miss Susan Erwin of Granite City. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Missies Lovie and Jessie Erwin and Mrs Pauline Keehner. Funeral services were held yesterday at the Davis Funeral Home in Granite City and burial was at the Mt Lebanon Cemetery in St Louis County.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs Elizabeth Crull Erwin; two sons, Paul and Donald of Jerseyville; two daughters, Mrs Florence Woodward of East St Louis and Mrs David (Betty) Goodfellow of LaVale, Md; a step-daughter, Mrs Gordon (Ruth) Gilbert of Whittier, Calif; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, one brother and five sisters. His first wife was Eugenia Smith.
ERWIN. Thomas E. Erwin, 45, died at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday Mar 13, 1990 at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. He was a carpenter with Union Local 377 of Madison County. He was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Moose Lodge and American Legion, all of Jerseyville. Born in Jersey County he was the son of Florence Horn Erwin and the late Paul Erwin. In addition to his wife and mother, surviving are three sons Robert P., David T, and Daniel J. all at home and a sister Judy smith of Jerseyville. Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Jacoby-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jerseyville with a rosary recitation at 6:30 p.m. A funeral Mass is at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville with the Rev. William Hembrow as celebrant. Burial is in St Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to Holy ghost School of the American Cancer Society.

The last number “Whispering Hope” was played on the Edison Phonograph, it being one of her favorite numbers and one she had requested to be played just a few days before her death. She lived and ministered among us a great number of years and had many friends who will miss her. Pallbearers were E.L. Kikis, Gale Davis, Ethelbert Rodell, John Erwin, Robert and Louis Tuetkin. Burial in Oak Grove in Jerseyville, 69 years. Had been aresident of Fidelity 44 years. Born June 22, 2858 and died Jan 27, 1828. daughter of John and Lucy Ames Davis of Rogersville, Tenn. Married May 9, 1884 to Dr Albert Douglas Erwin by Rev Van Treese. One son, Raymond Douglas on Sept 29, 1886 who died June 7, 1902. Dr Erwin died Oct 7, 1918. Mrs Erwin leaves one sister, Mrs Nancy Nichols of Independence, Mo and four nieces and four nephews.

ESSELBORN. Margaret (McWhorter) Esselborn 76, died at 11:10 a.m. Aug 30 at her home. Born in Carrollton, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Della Maude Cummings Kohntopp. She married Huey McWorter, who died in 1968, She then married Eugene Essleborn, who died in 1975. Surviving are a son William McKee Spence of Hammond, La three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and two brothers Kenneth Kohntopp of Alton and Harold Showers of Fieldon. Visitation was at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville where services were conducted by Rev. George Dougherty officiating. Burial was in Carrollton City Cemetery. the American Heart Association has been designated as a memorial.
ESTES. William Edward Estes, Jr. of Kane a steel company employee, died at eight o’clock Thursday morning at the John Cochran Hospital in St Louis where he had been a patient for nine days. He had been in ill health for some time. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brother Funeral Home. Services were held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon at Methodist Church in Kane with Rev. John O’Dell officiating. Burial was in Kane Cemetery. Mr Estes, a son of William Estes of Jerseyville and Mrs Moe Ozburn Estes Darr of Kane was born March 20, 1920 and his age at the time of death was forty-seven years, two months and eighteen days. He was a veteran of World War II. His survivors are his wife, Mrs Mary M Estes, one son, Richard and two daughters, Mary Carol and Patricia, all of Kane. His father of Jerseyville and his mother of Kane, two brothers, Thomas Estes of Medora and Donald Estes of East Alton; three sisters, Mrs Frances Woodring, Jerseyville, Mrs Mary Buhs of Wood River and Mrs Henrietta McRae of Moro; and a half-sister Mrs Betty Singleton of Kane.
EVANS. Alberta M. Evans, 63, died at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug 14, 1987 at St Anthony’s Hospital in Alton. She was born in Fieldon, a daughter of the late Isom and Adah Young Schaaf. On Dec 8, 1945 in Jerseyville she married Ward Evans and he survives. Also surviving are a son David Evans of Jerseyville; two grandchildren; a brother, CharlesSchaaf of Jerseyville and five sisters Sophia Miller and Margie Dilks of Jerseyville, Dorothy Mitchell of Winchester, Hazel Thompson of Kane and Rosemary Schaaf of Fieldon. Services were conducted at 10 a.m. today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Hone in Jerseyville. The Rev. Jean Erb officiated. Burial was in Fieldon Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association.

She was born on Jan 21, 1881 in Jerseyville, a daughter of Israel and Harriet Johnson Evans, She formerly die general home work. She is survived by one brother, Everett Evans, of Jerseyville. Her parents, three sisters and tree brothers preceded her in death.

EVANS. Services for Everett Evans, 91, of 923 S. State, Jerseyville were conducted Monday morning at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home by Rev. R.E. George. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. His death occurred at 4:50 p.m. April 27 at the Jerseyville Care Center. He was born Jan 28, 1888 in Jerseyville, a son of Isreal and Hattie Johnson Evans and was a chef and houseman. The World War I veteran was the last of eight children and had no survivors.
EVANS. Frederick Evans died at his home in St Louis, Mo Nov 12, 1919. Remains brought back to Jerseyville, his former home and the funeral was held from the John A. Evans home on Sunday.

EVANS. Rosa Evans (colored) daughter of John Evans died at home. 20 years. Funeral from Colored Baptist Church.
Samuel EVANS, colored, well known here, died last Sunday night. He came to this county from Trenton, N.J., in 1836, with Mr. John SUNDERLAND, brother of Lloyd SUNDERLAND, and lived with im awhile, then with Mr. John KIMBALL, and in 1840 went to live with Dr. D’ARCY, who at that time, kept several race horses. He remained with the doctor until the latter’s death, after which he became a protege of Mr. and Mrs. P. D. CHENEY. He was nearly 79 years old, and was the father of sixteen children. The funeral took place Tuesday from the Colored Baptist church, and was largely attended. Jersey County Democrat, January 31, 1884.
EVERTS. Andrew Everts born in Eaton, Madison Co, NY May 21, 1843 and died at his home five miles south of Jerseyville, Nov 20, 1890. 47 years. Came west in spring of 1868 and located in Audrain Co, Mo. In1869 went to Michigan for 3 years. Moved to Ill in 1873, settling in English Township. In 1881 moved to Mississippi Township wherehe lived until death. In Jan 1868 he married Celia Day. She died Oct 1870. In Jan 1875 he married Mrs Emma Hartwell, who survives. Three daughters, Cora, Hattie and Florence. Two sons, Eugene and Hugh. He was a soldier in the Civil War enlisting at Oswego, NY Sept 12, 1864. Private in Co D 184th NY Volunteers. Mustered out at close of war. Belonged to GAR as member of Lowe Post. Loving father, kind husband, good neighbor. Staunch upholder of American institutions. Funeral from Baptist church by Re. W.H. Avery and Rev. John Leeper. Lowe Post GAR held services at grave. “Rest comrade, rest, the tho’ts of men shall be Watchers to keep your rest from danger; Your silent tent we deck with flowers, Yours was the pain, the mem’ry shall be ours. The death of MrEverets occurred Tuesday April 21 at the Baptist Retirement Home in Maywood where he had made his home in recent years. He was a long-time member of the first Baptist church of Jerseyville. Mr Everets was a son of the late Andrew J. and Emma L. Landon Everts and was born in Jersey County Dec 29, 1876. His age at the time of death was 93 years, 3 months and 22 days. Surviving him are one daughter, Mrs Elsie Vecker of Crown Point, Indiana, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mr Everts was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs Mabel Everets, and one son, Marion Everts.

Mr Everts, a retired farmer, was born in Jersey County, Nov 2, 1879, a son of the late Andrew J. and Emma L. Landon Everts. His age at the time of death was 79 years, 5 months and 19 days. The decedent is survived by his wife, Mabel Everts, three sons, Leonard of Alton, Roscoe of Rosewood Heights and Marion of Jerseyville; one brother Eugene Everts of Jerseyville and one sister, Mrs Hervey Warner of Medora. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Frederica. Friends may call at the Gubser funeral Home where services will be held at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon, April 24 with Rev. Louis Purcellof the Methodist church officiating. Visitation hours were held at the funeral home. The death of Mrs Everts occurred Thursday morning, April 10 at 8:55 o’clock at the Jersey Community Hospital where she had been a patient a few days. She was a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Penton Sears and was born at Naples in Scott County, Il on Mar 3, 1882. Her are at the time of death was 87 years, 1 month and 7 days. Surviving Mrs Everts are one son, Marion Everts of Jerseyville and one sister Mrs Leah Wright of Arkadelphia, Ark, four grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Hugh O. Everts, two sons, Leonard and Roscoe and a daughter Frederica Everts.
EVERTS. Marion (Jack) Everts, 60, 101 Kenwood, Jerseyville, died unexpectedly at 11:30 a.m. June 10 at his home. He was born May 26, 1918 in Jersey County the son of Hugh and Mabel Sears Everts. He was a retired trucker. Surviving are his wife, the former Wilba Baker, one daughter, Mrs Michael (Linda) Warren of Troy and one grandson. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. June 14 at the Gubser Funeral Home with Rev Jerry Cantrell of troy officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. No visitation will be held. The Heat fund has beennamed as a memorial.

Myron Voorhees Everts, only son of Mr and Mrs Eugene Everts of Jerseyville, died early Tuesday morning May 26, at a hospital in Tucson, Arizona. he had been in ill health over and extended period of time and had been hospitalized on several occasions. At the time of his death Mr Everts had been on leave of absence from his work at as station manager of American Airlines Airport at Douglas, Arizona. Through the courtesy of the American Airlines the body of Mr Everts is being flown to Chicago today and will be brought from there by train. Friends may call at the Gubser Funeral Home in this city after seven o’clock Thursday night. Mrs Everts, wife of the deceased, and their daughters Barbara Lee, and Beverly Jean are also being flown to Illinois for the funeral. Services will be held at the First Baptist Church at 2:30 o’clock with Rev. Carl Moman pastor officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mr Everts was born on the Everts farm south of Jerseyville on Oct 12, 1906. His age at the time of death was 46 years, 7 months, and 14 days. His marriage to Miss Alice Doline of Charleston, W Virgina took place on Oct 1, 1936. His survivors include his wife and daughters of Arizona, his parents of Jerseyville and one sister, Mrs Merrill Becker of Dyer, Indiana.
EVERTS. Funeral services for Roscoe Laverne Everts, former Jerseyville resident, will be held this afternoon at 1:30 o’clock in Marks Mortuary in Wood River. Rev. Glen Smith will conduct the services and burial will be in Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens. His death occurred Monday at his home, 185 S. Clearview Drive, Rosewood Heights. He was a son of Mrs Mabel Everts of Jerseyville and the late Hugh Everts and was born at Jerseyville on April 6, 1909. Mr Everts was an employee of Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp for 40 years. He had resided at Jerseyville before moving to East Alton 20 years ago. Surviving him in addition to his mother are his wife, the former Mary Ellen Bailey whom he married Nov 2, 1930 at Jerseyville; two daughters, Mrs Ellen Mae O’Dell of rosewood Heights and Mrs Marlene Elizabeth Webb of Godfrey; a brother, Marion Everts of Jerseyville and five grandchildren.

He lived little beyond the usual limit of three score years and ten, long enough to see most of the great changes that have been wrought in this world during the last half century. We shall tenderly consign his body to the ground and commend his spirit to God how gave it. Uncle and Aunt Mr and Mrs John Ewin. Sergeant Ewin died only a hundred miles from his fathers old home in England where members of the family are buried.
EWIN. Edward Ewin, retired farmer and extensive landowner in Jersey and Macoupin counties, died Thursday morning, June 16 at 12:10 o’clock at the Jersey Community Hospital where he had been moved on Wednesday. Mr Ewin had been in ill since 1949. The decedent was a son of the late William and Elizabeth Harrison Ewin and was born in England on Sept 11, 1865, and at the time of his death was aged 89 years, 9 months and 5 days. At the age of twenty he came to the States arriving March 17, 1885. He engaged in farming for a number of years and was also well-known as a breeder, trainer and seller ofHarness horses. Mr Ewin retired from farming in 1929 and moved from Piasa to Jerseyville. Mr Ewin was a charter member of the elks Lodge. He was married to Miss Clara Bohn of Jerseyville and couple observed their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary on Nov 5, 1954. The aged man is survived by his wife, Mrs Clara Bohn Ewin, who has been ill for a number of years, one son, Ralph Ewin of Omaha, Neb, one daughter, Miss Mabel Ewin of Jerseyville, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Miss Mabel Ewin, who has been on a vacation on the advise of her physician, will arrive home this evening from Portland, Ore where she visited her nephew and niece, Mr and Mrs Donald Heard, Miss Ewin has cared for her parents for several years and during her absence her brother and sister-in-law Mr and Mrs Ralph Ewin have been here with her parents. Funeral services will be held at the Gubser Funeral Home Saturday afternoon June18 at 2 o’clock daylight savings time. Rev. F. W. Schwarzlose, pastor of the Methodist Church will officiate and interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the Gubser Funeral Home after 9 a.m. Friday. June 17.

William Loafman officiated and burial was in Medora Cemetery. Mr Ewin was a son of the late John and Anna Ewin and was born Oct 19, 1912 in Fidelity. He is survived bythree daughters, Mrs Douglas Truewell and Mrs Tom Decker of Bethesda, Md and Mrs Gary Blanchard of Wilmington, NJ, six grandchildren, four sisters, Mrs Isabelle Moore of Alton, Mrs Ruth Gahr of Arizona, Mrs Myrtle Lamb of Wisconsin and Mrs Rose Felter of Missouri and two brothers, John of Brighton and Paul of Medora.
EWIN. Ethel Irene Ewin, 62, of Route 1, died at 5:15 at her residence. Born in Fieldon, a daughter of the late Fred and Alta Simmons Walz, she was employed at Alton Mental health Center, retiring in 1977. She married John Ewin on June 9m 1947 in Arkansas and he survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Karen Adams of Bethalto, a stepdaughter Darlene Waggoner of Cottage Hills, three sons Gary of Bunker Hill, Karl of Brighton and Danny of Wood River, a stepson Jack Ewin of Godfrey; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Halter of Jerseyville and Balbina Tohill of Bethalto; two brothers, Fred Walz of Jerseyville and Robert Walz of Brighton. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Thursday at Warner-Targhetta Funeral Home in Brighton where services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in shipman Cemetery and the Heart Fund has been named as a memorial.
EWIN. Mabel Ellen Ewin, 87, who had resided in Jerseyville since 1919 died at 12:55 p.m. April 21 at Jersey Community Hospital. She was born July 7, 1896 in Jersey county to the late Edward and Clara Bohn Ewin and was employed at the State Bank of Jerseyville from March1933 until 1949. Miss Ewin was organist and choir director at the First Methodist church and Methodist Woman of the Year 1972, officer in the Jerseyville Woman’s club, Worthy Matron Order of the Eastern Star, 1936, president of the American Legion Auxiliary, 1941, member of the Jerseyville A Unit of Homemakers Extension and Homemaker of the year in 1971. She was a charter member of PEO Sisterhood Chapter GB. She is survived by one brother, Ralph E. Ewin, two nieces, Dorothy Heard and June Ewin one nephew, Ralph B. Ewin, all from Omaha, Neb. Her parents and one brother preceded her in death. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. R.E. George officiating. Burial was in OakGrove Cemetery. Eastern Star services were conducted at Gubser Funeral Home. The First United Methodist Church has been named as Memorial.
EWIN. Muriel M. Ewin, 88, of Medora died at 1:30 p.m. at her residence. Born in Jersey County, daughter of the late William and Margaret Mclcahey Moore, she married Paul Ewin on Jan 27, 1917 and he died in 1978. She is survived by one daughter, Kathryn Wedding of Medora and one granddaughter. Visitation was at Warner- Targhetta Funerall Home in Medora where a prayer service was read. A funeral mass was celebrated at St Johns Catholic Church in Medora with Rev T. J. Davenport as celebrant. Burial was in Medora Cemetery and memorials are suggested to masses or the American Heart Association.
EWIN. Ruby Cook Ewin, 89, died Aug 1 in the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Neb. The Ewins formerly resided in the fidelity area. She is survived by husband, Ralph E. Ewin, ad daughter and son Mrs Dorothy Heard and Ralph B. Ewin of Omaha; 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mrs Ewin was a sister-in-law of Mabel Ewin of Jerseyville. Services will he held Friday morning in Omaha.
EWING. Roy Ewing, 50 year old resident of Piasa Township, was found dead by Arthur Kelley at his home in Piasa Township about three o’clock Friday afternoon. Mr Ewing had been ill and Supervisor George Kruse had of Piasa Township was notified. Mr Kruse accompanied by a physician went to the Ewing home but death had occurred before their arrival. An inquest was conducted by Coroner Rodney Jacoby and death was attributed to Pneumonia. Death occurred at two o’clock Friday afternoon January 22. The decedent was a son of the late William and Nancy Eaton Ewing and was born at Anneda, Missouri, August 9, 1903. His age at the time of death was fifty years, five months and thirteen days. Mr Ewing was formerly employed at the tannery in Hartford and the Laclede Steel Company in Alton. He is survived by his wife, Mrs Mary Price Ewing of Alton, one step-son Loren Wilhelm and one sister, Mrs Ethel Stuckey of Hannibal, Mo. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home Monday afternoon Jan. 25 at 2 o’clock. Rev Carl Moman, pastor of the first Baptist Church officiated and interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery.
EXPOSITE. Mrs Jesse Cope of this city received word Wednesday of the death of Mrs Mayme Exposite which occurred Saturday in Florida where she and her husband had been residing. Mrs Exposite, the former Miss Mayme Durney, had been in ill health but her death was unexpected. Funeral services and burial were in Florida, Monday. Surviving Mrs Exposite in addition to her husband is one sister, Mrs Dave Tarkington of Chicago.
EYMAN. Word has been received in Jerseyville of the death of Mrs Lenora May Eyman, first grade teacher for many years in the Jerseyville Public Schools, who succumbed to a heart attack at Orinda, Calif, last Saturday morning. Mrs Eyman, daughter of the late Samuel Beaman and Ida Belle Nott, lived almost her entire life in Jerseyville. She was married June 15, 1910 to William Brwonlow May, a Jerseyville merchant who died Feb. 2, 1941. On Nov 11, 1961 Mrs May was married to Dr Ralph L. Eyman, Dean Emeritus of the College of Education at Florida State University, Tallahassee, Fla, a former Jersey County Farm Extension Agent. Dr and Mrs Eyman made their home in Tallahassee. This summer they had been on an extended tour of the West and were visiting in Orinda, Calif. at the home of Mr and Mrs William Clyatt, son-in-law and daughter of Dr Eyman, when Mrs Eyman was stricken. For 33 years Mrs Eyman, or Mrs May as she was known to her pupils, was a teacher in the public schools of Jersey county. For 26 of these years she taught first grade at the Jerseyville East Elementary School. She also served many years as Postmaster of the summer post office at Chautauqua. After retiring from teaching she served several years as Executive Secretary for the Jersey County Red Cross and slightly more than a year as a Counsellor at Monticello College, Godfrey. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs Louis Keehner and Misses Laura and Susan Nott of Jerseyville and one nephew, Paul Keehner of Paris. Mrs Eyman will be returned here for burial. Funeral plans are indefinite pending the arrival of Dr Eyman.
