Viola A. BACHMAN, 94, d. Thurs, July 22, 1993 at Jersey Comm Hosp, Jerseyville. Born in Brighton, Nov 7, 1898, she was a dau of the late Theodore & Annie (Wagenblast) Schmidt. Her husband, the late Albert Bachman, d. March 18, 1949. Surviving are 1 dau, Bernadine V. Kelsey of Alton; 1 son, Alvin Bachman of Kankakee; 3 grandchildren; and 2 g-grandchildren. Visitation was from Targhetta funeral home in Brighton. The Brighton Rebecca Lodge 686, where she was a member, conducted services. Visitation continued at St. John United Church of Christ in Brighton. Rev Susan Clutts officiated. Burial was in Brighton city cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church where she was a member.
Juanita L. BADER, 72, d. Sept 5, 1993, at St. Anthony hosp in Alton. The dau of the late John H. & Gail (Harrington) Gaither, she was born Feb 14, 1993 in Lawndale. She married Lee Rogers Bader May 13, 1950, in Alton and he survives. Also surviving are 2 dau, Deborah G. Heaton of Roodhouse and Carmelyn J. Calvert of Eldred; 2 sons, John L. and Mike R. Bader, both of Jerseyville; 5 grandchildren, Steve, Kathy, Elivia, Zachary and Christopher; 1 g-grandchild, Katelyn Carry; 1 sis, Marjorie Morris of Jersyville; 1 bro, Floyd Gaither of Springfield; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Mary Kay Bader; and 3 sis, Katerin (Katherin?), Madelyn and Eileen. Visitation was from Jacoby brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Gary Whitley officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cem. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Assoc or American Cancer Soc.
Mary Kay BADER, 40, d. May 4, 1993, at Alton Mem Hosp. The dau of Milton and Mary (Jones) Ruyle of Jerseyville was born Feb 14, 19??, in Carrollton. She was the manager of the bakery dept at Shop n Save in Alton. She married John L. Bader Jan 27, 1973, in Jerseyville. He survives. Also surviving is her grandmother, Flora Jones of Jerseyville. She was preceded in death by 1 sis, Linda Elizabeth Ruyle. Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Dan Harry officiated. The Ruby Rebekah Lodge No 263, of which she was a member conducted a service also. Memorials may be given to Alton area Animal Aid Assoc. A coroner’s inquest is pending.
Charles Henry BARTON. 1921. Funeral services over the remains of Charles Henry Barton who was killed near White Hall, were held in the home on West Bridgeport St, White Hall, at 10 oclock Tuesday. The discourse was delivered by Rev Charles M. Ross, pastor of the Christian Church, and the singing was by the Duncan sisters. There was a large attendance, and the profusion of floral offerings gave further testimony of the esteem in which the man was held. The remains were conveyed to the Belt cemetery in Jersey County, eight miles west of Jerseyville.
The deceased was engaged in railroad work at White Hall and the Roodhouse in recent months. On the 3 rd inst., while engaged in unloading ties in the yards at Roodhouse a tie struck him on the head. The injury was so serious that he was rushed to Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville by special train. And there he died at 3 a.m. Saturday. The remains were brought to White Hall Saturday afternoon. He was 49 years of age on July 26th last, and was born on Cal Beechs place west of Jerseyville, eldest son of the late William H. and Cornelia Barton. Long residents of Otterville. He had been making his home with his son Earl in White Hall since July 1 st last. The widow and two sons survive. The aged mother, one brother and six sisters survive. The brother and sisters being as follows: William H. of Granite City; Mrs. R. C. Hall, Alton; Mrs. A. E. White, Jerseyville; Mrs. A. L. Snow, Pittsburgh PA; Mrs. H. G. Bertran, Granite City, Miss Clara Barton, Mrs. T. S. Lockhart, New York City. George T. Barton of Grafton is an uncle. Contributed by Richard Bloss.
Christopher BARTON, a resident of the Otterville vicinity died at a hospital in Alton, Thursday, April 26 at 9 A.M. The deceased was the son of the late John A. and Elizabeth Montgomery Barton and at the time of his death, he was aged 72 tears five months and twelve days. Mr. Barton is survived by one brother, Harry Barton of Otterville and two sisters, Mrs. H. Main of University City MO and Mrs. Lula Bracey. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church in Otterville Sunday April 29 at 2 P.M. with Reverend T. O. Holley officiating. Interment was in the Otterville Cemetery. BARTON. Aged Otterville resident dies. Mrs. Elizabeth Barton, aged Otterville resident, died at three-thirty AM oclock, Thursday morning, April 2nd at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. R. Main in University City. The deceased had been ill for some time and was removed to her daughters home ten days ago. At the time of her death, Mrs. Barton was aged eighty-nine years. She is the widow of John Barton. Her survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Main and Mrs. William Tracey of Detroit, Michigan and three sons, Harry, Christ and Collie Barton of Otterville. Funeral services were held at the Otterville Baptist Church, Saturday, April 4th at two-thirty oclock. Rev. A. B. Carson officiated and interment was in the Otterville Cemetery. Many relatives and friends paid final tribute Saturday afternoon to the memory of Mrs. Elizabeth Montgomery Barton, life long resident of the Otterville community whose death occurred on 2 April at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. R. Main in University City, MO where she was tenderly cared for during her final illness. She was 88 years, 9 months, 14 days. Interment was in the Noble cemetery following impressive rites conducted in the Otterville Baptist Church by Rev. A. B. Carson of Jerseyville.
Mrs. Barton was born and reared in the Otterville community, her maiden name being Miss Elizabeth Montgomery. She was united in marriage with John A. Barton on 13 Nov 1864. To this union nine children were born, five of whom survive her; also 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Mr. Barton died 19 years ago. Mrs. Isabel Giers of Grafton is Mrs. Bartons surviving sister.
She was converted in early childhood and united with the Presbyterian Church. For many years she engaged in teaching school in Jersey County and until her death she retained a keen mentality and intensely interested in the fast-moving current of daily events in the nation. She lived a simple, quiet life devotes to her home and family and loved by all who knew her. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and neighbors. George BARTON, 78, dies. George Barton, 78, died Saturday morning at 5 oclock at the County Farm where he had been an inmate since February, 1924. He had been in failing health for some time. Funeral rites were held at the County Farm Monday afternoon, 2 March at 2:30 oclock. Rev. H.S. Bushnell officiated and the interment was in the Belle (Bell?) cemetery. Mr. Barton was born in Jersey County. He was the son of the late Elisah and Rebecca Lofton Barton. He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. Jersey County News, 6 Mar 1936. Harry H. BARTON, a native of Otterville, died Monday, January 16,1950, at a hospital in Chicago, and the body was brought to Jerseyville Tuesday to the Gubser Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at the funeral home Wednesday morning, January 18, at ten oclock with the Reverend Dale Harmon officiating. Internment was at the Otterville cemetery. Mr. Barton was the son of the late John A. and Elizabeth Montgomery Barton and was born in Otterville, October 1, 1878. His age at the time of death was seventy-one years, three months and fourteen days. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. L. R. Main of St. Louis and Mrs. William Bracey of Plymouth, Michigan. – Added note from Dick Bloss. This obit fails to mention his son Wesley Barton who also survived him.
William H. BARTON, 64 years old died at home in Southwest part of town. Funeral from his home, Rev. S. Catt presided. He was born August 16, 1846. He was buried in Belt cemetery. He leaves a wife Cornelia, six children; Chas H., Mrs. A. L. Snow of East St. Louis, Clara, Mrs. H. G. Bertran of St. Louis, William H. and Cora, Two brothers, John A. and George T. Elsie C. BEACH, 75, former Jerseyville resident d. Jan 8, 1993, at Humana hosp in Hoffman estates, North Lake, Il. She was born in Grafton March 28, 1917, the dau of the late Edward L. & Faye Marie (Ward) Ringhausen. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors and Jersey co home extension. Surviving are 3 dau, Patricia Lee Voegtle of Buffalo Grove, Linda Sue Voegtle of Schiller Park and Diana Jean Wirth of Palmyra, NY; 8 grandchildren; 2 g-grandchildren; and 1 sis, Virginia Faye Drenth of Arlington Heights. Preceding her in death was a sis June Davis. Visitation was at Gubser funeral home in Jerseyville. Visitation and services were held at first Presbyterian church in Jerseyville. Rev Simon officiated. The cremains (body cremated) were interred in Oak Grove cem. Memorials may be given to the church where she was a member.
Dorothy Mae Legate BELL, 69, d Mon July 6, 1993 at Jersey Com hosp. Born Oct 3, 1923, in Ill, she was a dau of the late Clinton & Irene (Foval) Cope. Her husband Jim Bell, preceded her in death. Surviving are 1 dau, Willa Kay Pinky” Patrick of Greenbriar, AR; 13 grandchildren; and 6 g-grandchildren. 1 bro, Loren “Barney” Cope, and 1 grandson preceded her in death. Visitation was at Jacoby bro funeral home in Jerseyville. Burial was in Scenic Hill cem, Grafton. Memorials may be given to the Ill School for the Deaf of Jacksonville.
Alvin H. “Cotton” BENSA, 68, d. Jan 21, 1986, at his residence. He was a painter, born in Edwardsville, a son of the late William & Bertha (Dalhaus) Bensa. He married Ruby (Desherlia), March 6, 1936, and she preceded him in death. He then married Norma (Retherford) Winters Bensa Nov. 21, 1964, in Jerseyville. Surviving are his wife; 1 son, Robert Bensa of Greenville; 4 dau, Shirley Rhoads of E Alton, Carol Jockisch of Cottage Hills, Jerry Carver of Glenwood, CA and Bea Moore of Garland, TX; 2 step dau, Doris Frazier of Jerseyville and Ann Weber, Carrollton; 23 grandchildren; 12 grandchildren; and 1 sis, Mabel Shepard of Hufton, ID. Ruby E. BENSA, 56, of Grafton d. Jan. 20 at Barnes hosp, St. Louis following a 2 yr illness. She was born July 17, 1916 in Calhoun county where she attended school. Mrs Bensa was employed at Marquette state park lodge for 8 yrs until becoming ill. Visitation and services were held at Burke funeral home in Grafton. Rev Bob Kimber officiated and burial was in Hartford cem. Survivors are 4 dau, Mrs. Shirley Crider and Mrs. Carol Jockisch of Cottage Hills, Mrs. Beatrice Moore of Garland, TX, and Mrs. Geraldine Bartley of Buena Park, CA; 3 sons, Robert Bensa of Greenville, Gary Lee and David Allen Bensa of Grafton; 2 sis, Mrs. Ethel Novotny and Mrs. Ruth Staton, Grafton; 1 bro, Ross Desherlia, Grafton; and 13 grandchildren.
Elmer A. BERRY, 70, of Alton, services were conducted at Gent funeral chapel, Alton by Rev. Burrough of the First Presbyterian church. Burial was in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens. He d. Oct. 7, at Christian hosp St. Louis, MO after a short illness. He had been employed at Deitchy market for 17 yrs and retired in 1972. A carpenter for 25 yrs, he was a member of Carpenter’s Local 1808 of Granite city. His survivors are his widow, Lillian (Thiele) Berry; 1 dau, Betty Cherry of Alton; 1 bro, Harold Berry of Jerseyville; 2 sis, Pauline Gurganus of Dorsey and Viola Brummer of N Pekin; 3 grandchildren and 4 g-grandchildren.
BERRY, Harold B., born 24-06-1920, Alton, Madison Co., Illinois, died 29-06-1985, buried St. Francis cemetery. Harold B. Berry, 65, of Jerseyville, d. June 29 at Christian ne hosp in St. Louis. He was born June 24, 1920, in Alton son of the late Harry F. Berry & Mattie Johnson. He was a veteran of WWII and an electrical supervisor at Laclede Steel for 41 yrs. He married Bonnie Steingrubey on Sept. 29, 1951, in Alton. He was a member of St. Francis church, Jerseyville and the Carrollton comm chorus. Survivors are his wife, Bonnie of Jerseyville; 2 dau, Andrea Berry of Zillah, WA, and Margaret Berry of Jerseyville; 2 sis, Pauline Gurganus of Fosterburg and Viola Brummer of North Pekin; and 1 grand daughter. Visitation and rosary were held at Jacoby brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. The funeral mass was held in St. Francis Church with Rev. Patrick Morrow as celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis cem.
BERRY, John C., born Carrollton, Green county, Illinois, died 19-07-1982, buried Rose Lawn mem. John C. Berry, 39, of Cottage Hills was pronounced dead July 19, at the scene of a motorcycle accident in Bethalto. He was a rider on the motorcycle involved. He was a foreman at Olin Corp., where he had been employed for 13 yrs. He was born in Carrollton, a son of Ruth (Stone) Maupin of Cottage Hills and the late Robert C. Berry. Besides his mother, he is survived by 1 dau, Sonya Berry of Wood River; 1 son, John jr, at home; 4 sis, Sandra Stewart, Peggy JeanBerry and Mary C. Drew, all of Cottage Hills and Minnie Belle Sheppard of Moro; and 3 bro, Herman R. of Bethalto, Patrick of Cottage Hills and Daniel of Gillette, WY. Services were held at Gent funeral home, Alton where Rev. Dale Wilforn officiated. Burial was in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens.
BERRY, Karen Ann (McScooler), born 29-12-1949, Mattoon, Coles Co., Illinois, died 03-1977, buried 20-03-1977, Oak Grove. Karen Ann Berry, 27, wife of Paul Thomas Berry, d. at her home in Jerseyville, following an extended illness. She was born Dec. 29, 1949 in Amttoon, a dau of Lester McScooler and Hazel Lowe. Mrs Berry taught 1 yrs in community dist 100. She is survived by her husband; 1 son, Jeffrey Berry, at home; her parents Les McSchooler &Mrs Robert (Hazel) Rose, Jerseyville; 1 sis, Lesslee McSchooler, a college student, and 1 bro, Ray McSchooler, at home. Services were held at Jacoby brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev R. E. George officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cem. Memorials may be given to Salvation Army.
BERRY, Marilda Ann (Lane), born 08-11-1875, Batchtown, Calhoun County, Illinois, died 01-1970, buried Oak Grove. Marilda Ann berry, 94, of Alton, formerly of Jerseyville, d. at St. Anthony hosp, Alton. Final rites were held at Jacoby brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Louis Purcell, pastor of First United Methodist church, officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cem. Born Nov. 8, 1875 at Batchtown, she was the dau of James & Hester (Reeves) Lane. She is survived by 1 son, J. Fred Berry; and 1 dau, Mrs Oran J. Fuller, both of Alton; 1 grandchild and 1 g-grandchild. Her husband, James L. berry preceded her in death.
BERTHOUX, Dale, died 26 11-1967. Spec 4 Dale Berthoux, ex city official and a former employee of the Democrat News, d. Nov. 26, 1967 of metal fragment wounds in Vietnam. His wife Mrs. Roberta (Johnston) Berthoux, of Jerseyville, later received a message stating that Berthoux d. in action in Vietnam on Nov. 26 of metal fragment wounds while on perimeter defense while engaging hostile force in fire fight. When in session the Jerseyville city council adopted a resolution of respect to the former council member. Berthoux was in his last year of a 4 yr term as city councilman when he volunteered for the draft. Though he had previous military service and was beyond draft age Berthoux told friends and associates that he was prompted by a strong feeling of moral obligation to do his part in the Vietnam situation. He enlisted and left for service Oct. 4, 1966. The serviceman received basic and advanced training at Camp Carson, CO. Following a 30 day leave in Aug., he left for Vietnam where he was a member of Co. A, first battalion, 12th inf, 4th inf division. Mrs Berthoux received a letter from her husband, that had been written on Nov. 21 in which he said they were making a hill assault. Berthoux was a squad leader. The serviceman was the son of Paul & Virginia (Richey) Berthoux of Jerseyville. He was educated in local schools and attended SIU before accepting employment in the Photographic dept of the Democrat News. He remained in the employ of the company for 8 yrs, resigning to accept a position as technical representative for W. Schiller & Co, photographic firm in St. Louis. His previous military service had been in 1954-56 and he had served 18 mos with the army in Austria, Italy and Germany. He was a charter member of the Jersey County young democrats club and was its first president. He was also active in Jerseyville Jaycees and other civic movements. Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are 2 bro, Duane of Fairfield, CA, and Dann of Jerseyville, and 2 sis, Mrs. Gerald Eddmunds and Mrs. Phillip Shelton of Alton. 1 bro, Darel, was killed Apr 19, 1961 in an auto accident while serving as city clerk of Jerseyville.
BERTHOUX, Darel P., died 19-04-1961, buried Oak Grove. Darel P. Berthoux, 22, city clerk of Jerseyville d. Apr. 19, at Jersey Comm. hosp. He had been involved in a 2 car crash near the home of Mr. & Mrs. Edward Crone, 3 mi north of Jerseyville. He d. of his injuries at 11:45 that night. Also injured in the accident was Mr S Samuel (Shirleyweller) Closser of Hillview. City clerk Berthoux was enroute to his home from Jacksonville where he had gone earlier in the eve to accompany his sister, Diane, back to Illinois College where she was a student. They, with other members of their family, had been in Highland in the afternoon to attend the funeral of their paternal grandmother, Mrs. Lena Berthoux, whose death occurred on Mon am. He was alone at the time of the accident. Surviving in addition to his parents and sister Diane, is another sis, Mrs Gerald (Doris) Edmunds of Jerseyville; and 3 bro, Duane Berthoux, member of the Jerseyville police dept, Dale, photographer and advertising solicitor for the Democrat News, and Dann, a 7th grade student at Jerseyville East elementary school. Darel received his education in Jerseyville schools. He served 6 mo active duty with the US Marine Corps and was a member of the active Reserves. The young man was appointed to the position of city clerk by Mayor James Dolan. Visitation and services were held at Gubser funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev M. Edwards Breed officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cem.
BERTHOUX, Esther Virginia (Richey), born Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois, died 10-08-1987, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Esther Virginia Berthoux, 77, d. Aug. 10, 1987, at Southwest Memorial hospital in Houston, TX, following a brief illness. She was born in Jerseyville, and since Feb. 1963, had served as the Jersey Township clerk. A daughter of the late John E. & Esther (Porter) Richey, she married Paul H. Berthoux, Dec. 26, 1927, in Edwardsville. He d. Nov.18, 1971. Surviving are 2 sons, Duane P. Berthoux of Fairfield, CA, and Dann P. Berthoux of West Frankfort, IL; 2 daughters, Doris Edmunds of houston, TX, and Diane B. Shelton of Macon, GA; 10 grandchildren; 4 Great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Francis Richey of Jacksonville and Sylvester E. Richey of Los Angeles, CA; and 1 sister, Emma Thomas of Phoenix, AZ. She was preceded in death by 2 sons, 2 grandsons and 7 siblings. Visitation and services were held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Revs Simon A. Somon and Philip Shelton officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cem. Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association.
BERTHOUX, Paul H., born16-01-1907, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, died 18-11-1971, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Paul H. Berthoux, 64, of Jerseyville d Nov.18, at Jersey Community Hospital. He had been ill for several years. Visitation and services were held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev M. Edwards Breed officiated with burial in Oak Grove cemetery. A retiree of Olin Industries, Mr. Berthoux was born in Edwardsville on Jan. 16, 1907 a son of Horace B. and Lena (Meuri) Berthoux. His survivors are his wife, Virginia (Richey) Berthoux; 2 sons, Dan B. Berthoux of Jerseyville and Duane Berthoux of Fairfield, CA; 2 daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Doris) Edmunds of Alton and Mrs. Philip (Diane) Shelton of University City, MO; 7 grandchildren; and 1 sister, Mrs. A. L. Anderson of Phoenix, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 sons, Dale and Darel. Memorials may be given to the Cancer Society.
BERTMAN, Antoinette Broc(k)amp, died 01-1927. Antoinette Bertman, of Morrisonville, died recently. She was the wife of Anton Bertman. Funeral from the home in Morrisonville. Surviving are 1 sister, Josephine Brocamp of Jerseyville and 1 brother John B. Brocamp, Jerseyville.
BERTMAN, Doris B. (Ruyle), born 26-01-1908, Jersey County, Illinois, died 21-05- , buried St. Francis Cemetery. Doris B. Bertman, co-owner with her son, Robert, in Bertman’s Department Store in Jerseyville, d. at Greenwood Manor, May 21. Mrs Bertman, widow of Herbert C. Bertman whose death occurred in 1958, had lived in the family home until ill health had required hospital and nursing care for the past few years. A daughter of the late Thomas B. & Dora J. Ruyle, she was born in Ruyle Township on Jan. 26, 1908. She was graduated from Jersey Township high school and the nursing school at St. Ann hospital in St. Louis. Her marriage to Mr. Bertman took place at St. Francis Xavier church. She is survived by 3 sons, John of Overland Park, KS, Robert and Charles of Jerseyville; 3 daughters, Mrs. Lawrence (Mary Ann) Pranger of Jerseyville, Mrs. Ronald (Patricia) Turner of Kane and Mrs. Larry (Marilyn) Davis of Dow; and 16 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; 1 daughter, Carolyn Jane, her parents and 2 brothers, Herbert and Strait Ruyle. Mass of the resurrection was celebrated May 23, at St. Francis church. Rev. Msgr John N. Bertman of Quincy co-celebrated the mass with Father Terry Shea of Godfrey and father George Radosevich of Jerseyville; burial was in St. Francis cemetery. Mrs Bertman was a devout member of the church and had shown great interest in the addition to and development of the school.
BERTMAN, Fred J., born 17-03-1856, Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois, died 13-02-1928. Fred J. Bertman, 70 yrs, 10 mo, 26 days, d. at the home of his sister, Mrs. Nellie B. Porter, 306 W. Pearl, Feb. 13, 1928. He was born March 17, 1856, in Jerseyville, the son of Frederick & Lena (Goetten) Bertman, natives of Germany. His early education was obtained in the public schools of Jerseyville. He also attended school at St. Louis for a time. He assisted his father in the store of the latter until his death when he closed the business out, the office of deputy sheriff requiring his full attention. He served as deputy for a period of 2 years. He became affiliated with the banking firm of Shephard & Company, but later left that position to accept a public office. The greater portion of his career was spent in filling various offices of trust in the community to which he was called by his fellow citizens. He was active for many years in both county and city politics. He served 2 terms as collector for Jersey Township and 3 terms as deputy county treasurer. He was a member of the city council of Jerseyville for 9 years. He was elected to the Office of Justice of the Peace in 1911 and has continued to fill that office ever since. In 1879 he married Sarah Fre(a?)ces (Massey) Bertman, who was a native of Jersey county. Her death occurred Feb. 17, 1881. She was a daughter of Henry C. & Catherine (Fitzgerald) Massey. To this union 1 son was born, Henry C., who died in infancy.

BERTMAN, Frederick, born17-05-1821, Ahmen, Prussia, died 1882, buried St. Francis cemetery. Frederick Bertman, Sr, was born May 17, 1821 at Ahmen, Prussia. He came to us and located in Alton in 1845. In 1848 he married Helena (Goetten) Bertman. They lived in Jerseyville. His widow and children survive: Setta, Minnie, John, Mary, Fred, Nellie and Will. Funeral was from St. Francis church, with burial in Catholic Cemetery. Pall bearers: Peter Dolan, James Fitzgerald, Peter Dardinger, John W. Davis, J. Brokamp and J. Lynn.
BERTMAN, Herbert C., born 06-05-1906, Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois, died 30-10-1958, buried St. Francis cemetery. Herbert C. Bertman, 52, died at Barnes hospital in St. Louis. He had under gone emergency surgery on Tuesday. The body was brought to Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Friends called on Friday and funeral services were held at St. Francis Xavier church. Requiem mass was celebrated by Mr. Bertman’s older brother, Monsignor A. J. Bertman of Springfield. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery. Mr Bertman, owner and manager of Bertman’s department store in Jerseyville for 33 yrs, had suffered from impaired health for more than 10 years but despite the physical handicap he had continued active in the business as his health permitted. Never during his long period of suffering had he lost the vibrancy of voice which was so characteristic of his genial personality. Throughout the past years he had been hospitalized on several occasions and had specialized care which, coupled with a firm determination and unwavering faith, enabled him to retain an active interest in his business. In former years he had devoted considerable time to the betterment of business conditions in Jerseyville and had served as president of Jerseyville Chamber of Commerce. He was a devout member of St. Francis church, a member of the Jerseyville council, Knights of Columbus, and a Fourth Degree Knight. Mr Bertman was born in Jerseyville May 6, 1906, the second son of the late John C. Bertman & Theresa (Schmieder) Bertman. He was educated in local schools and upon the death of his father he assumed management of the store, one of the veteran business houses of Jerseyville. Surviving are his wife, Doris (Ruyle) Bertman; 3 sons, John R., Robert T. and Charles J.; 3 daughters, Mary Ann, Patricia Louise and Marilyn Joan. Other survivors are his mother; 2 brothers, Monsignor A. J. Bertman of Springfield and father John C. Bertman of Michael; and 4 sisters, Mrs. Arthur (Beatrice) Tauber of Decatur, sister Mary Eugenia of Duluth, MN, Mrs. Herman W. (Rosemary) Sick of Little Rock, AR, and Mrs. Maurice (Elanor) Beiermann of Jerseyville. 1 daughter, Carolyn Jane preceded her father in death.
BERTMAN, John F., born, Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois, died 01-1928, buried St. Francis cemetery. John F. Bertman, 76, businessman of Rockbridge, d. Thursday at his home there. He was born in Jerseyville, a son of Frederick John & Helen (Goetten) Bertman, who were early residents of Jerseyville. He married Marie (Massey) Bertman May 27, 1875. They were parents of 11 children and 7 survive; Mrs. George Mayob of Marshall, MO, Mrs Garret Welch of Plainview, IL, Mrs. Marie Campbell of Pittsfield, IL, Mrs. James Heavener of St. Louis, MO, Mrs. E. Q. Slone of Carrollton, Roy A. Bertman of Rockbridge, IL and Henry E. Bertman of Marshall, MO; 9 grandchildren and 1 sister, Mrs. Nellie B. Porter of Jerseyville. He was a successful business man and citizen of Rockbridge for 40 yrs, as manager of Stanard-Tilton Elevator, member of Board of Education, Mayor of Rockbridge and Village Trustee. Services were held at Holy Ghost church, the services in Rockbridge being held at his home by Rev. Enright. The body was brought to the residence of Mr. Bertman’s sister, Mrs. Nellie Porter, on W. Pearl St. in Jerseyville. Pallbearers were: George Mayob of Marshall, MO, Garrett Welch of Plainview, IL, James Heavener of St. Louis, MO, E. A. Slone of Carrollton, Joseph Brew of Pittsfield, IL, and Fred Eck of Jerseyville.

BERTMAN, Theresa (Schmeider), born 22-10-1877, New York, NY, died 21-03-1968, buried St. Francis cemetery. Theresa Bertman, died at Watters nursing home, where she had been a patient for 9 mo. A daughter of the late Charles & Ottilie (Molonet) Schmeider, she was born in New York city on Oct. 22, 1877. She had made her home in Jersey County for 83 years. Her husband, the late John C. Bertman, was one of the original owners of Bertman’s dept store in Jerseyville and continued its operation until his death in 1928. Presently the store is under the management of Robert Bertman, the third generation of the family who had of late purchased the interest of his grandmother in the business and is now co-owner with his mother, Mrs. Herbert C. Bertman. The late Herbert Bertman, who was a partner in the firm, operated the store from 1928 until his death, Oct. 30, 1958. Surviving Mrs. Bertman in addition to her son, Father Bertman, pastor of St. Michael church at Sigel and St Mary’s church at Neoga, are 4 daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Beatrice) Tauber of Decatur, sister Mary Eugenia, O. P., of Peoria, Mrs. Herman (Rosemary) Sick of Little Rock, AR, and Mrs. Maurice (Eleanor) Beiermann of Jerseyville; 18 grandchildren and 24 g-great grandchildren. Her son, Father John C. Bertman of Sigel, was the principal celebrant of a co-celebrated requiem mass held at Holy Ghost church. Concelebrating with him were Father Robert Heintz, pastor of Holy Ghost church, and Father Francis D. Lee, pastor of St. Francis church. Burial was in St. Francis cemetery. Visitation was held at Jacoby brothers funeral home in Jerseyville, where the rosary was recited Friday eve.

BESTERFELDT, Bertha Louvisa (Welch), born 11-12-1919, Scott County, Illinois, died 05-03-1952, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Bertha Louvisa Besterfeldt, 32 yrs, 2 mo, 24 days, wife of Enos E. Besterfeldt of Jerseyville, died March 5. She had been attended by a physician the preceding evening but at that time her condition was not considered serious, she became worse a few hours later and she sucumbed before aid could be arrive. An inquest was scheduled, by Rodney Jacoby. Family members reported that she had suffered from asthmatic attacks since childhood. She was a daughter of Jesse & Bessie (Emmons) Welch and was born in Scott County, IL, Dec. 11, 1919. She is survived by her husband; 2 small sons, Jerry E. and Donald L. Besterfeldt of Jerseyville; her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Jesse Welch of Winchester; 1 brother, Luther Welch of Alton ; and 3 sisters, Mrs. Beulah Owing and Mrs. Marjorie Lester of Winchester and Mrs. Marcella Haney of Alsey. Visitation and services were held at Jacoby brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Laverne Poole officiated. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.

A laborer, he was born Aug. 15, 1906 in Jersey County a son of Albert e & Bessie (Gilbert) Besterfeldt. BESTERFELDT, Lucille (Spangle), born 13-09-1885, Jersey County, Illinois, died 23-09-1957, buried, Upper Alton cemetry. Lucille (Lucy) Besterfeldt, 72, of Alton died at St. Joseph hospital in Alton. Word of her death was delivered to Mrs. William Kirchner by Charles Humiston. Funeral services were held at Gent Chapel in Alton, Wed. Sept. 25. Rev C. L. Gruver, pastor of the Assembly of God Church, officiated and burial was in Upper Alton cemetery. She had been in ill health for 2 years. The decedent was a daughter of the late Jasper Spangle & Mrs. Lula (Henson) Spangle White. Her father had died of Typhoid fever when she was 3 years old, and 1 sister, Della, died about 10 years ago. Mrs Besterfeldt was the widow of Harry Besterfeldt, and is survived by 2 sons, Harvey and John Frazer of Alton; 1 sister, Mrs Nona Stargas of St. Louis, and 2 grandchildren.

Mary Lena Besterfeldt, 77, of Bethalto, died Nov.25, 1987, at St. Anthony hospital in Alton, after a lengthy illness. Born in Jersey county, she was the daughter of the late Henry & Nellie (Rogers) Groppel. Surviving are 2 daughters, Ann Short of Ofallon and Ruth Proctor of East Alton; 1 son, Floyd Crouch of Granite City; 8 grandchildren; 12 g-great-grandchildren; and 2 sister, Emma Walker of East Alton and Alice Longnecker of Waco, TX. Private services were held at Smith Funeral Home in Alton. Burial was in Upper Alton cemetery.

She was born in Otterville, daughter of the late Joseph & Lena (Hooper) Wahle. On Sept. 15, 1915, she married Mark Bethel, who died Nov.7, 1969. Surviving are 4 daughters, Esther Williams of Rosewood Heights, Dorothy Etter of Godfrey, Rosemary Andeerson of Virginia, IL, and Edith Herman of Edwardsville; 2 sons, Robert and Howard, both of East Alton; 21 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren. Visitation was at Warner-Targhetta funeral home in Brighton, where services were conducted. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Memorials may be given to the heart fund.
BETHEL, Mark J., born 07-09-1893, Jersey County, Illinois, died 11-1969, buried Valhalla cemetery. Mark J. Bethel, 66, retired Brighton area farmer and native of Jersey county, was killed instantly when the tractor he was driving was struck by a freight train at a crossing near his home 3 mi southeast of Brighton. He was driving out of a private lane onto Seminary Rd and apparently did not hear or see the approaching CB&Q train. Funeral rites were held at Warner funeral home in Brighton and burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park. Mr Bethel was born in Jersey County Sept. 7, 1893. He was a retired farmer and carpenter. For many years he served on the Brighton Community school board. The Otterville resident had been in failing health for some time. The deceased was the daughter of the late George W. & Jane (Smith) White, and was born in Rosedale, March 28, 1867. She is survived by 2 sons, Mark Bethel of Brighton and William Bethel of Otterville; 7 daughters, Mrs. Ida M. Kirchner, Mrs. Leslie Spangle, Mrs. Claude Hutchinson, Mrs. Elmer Ridenour, Miss Jane and Jean Bethel, all of Otterville and Mrs. Enid Gray of Chicago; 1 half sister, Mrs. Carl Wiegand of Jerseyville; 1 half brother, Beryle White of East St. Louis and her step mother, Mrs. Nora White of Wood River. BETHEL, Rollin H., born Jersey County, Illinois, buried Rosedale cemetery. Rollin H. Bethel, 73, retired farmer of Otterville, died at St. Joseph Hospital, Alton, following surgery for a strangulated hernia. He had been highway commissioner of Otter Creek Township for many years. Mr Bethel was born near Fieldon, was a lifelong resident of Jersey county. He was a successful farmer retiring 27 years ago and moved to Otterville. He was an ardent member of the Democratic party, being at the time of his death a candidate for re-election as precinct committeeman. He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Bethel; 7 daughters, Mrs. Fred Kirchner, Mrs. Leslie Spangle, Mrs. Claude Hutchinson, Mrs. Elmer Ridenour, Mrs. Albert Gray of Chicago, and Misses Jane and Jean Bethel of Washington DC; 2 sons, William of Otterville and Mark of Brighton. Jean & Jane, who are twins, arrived at their fathers bedside shortly before his death. Funeral services were held at Otterville Baptist church. Rev C. C. Dawdy of Jerseyville officiated. Interment was in Rosedale cemetery. Mr Bethel was united in marriage on Dec. 1 9, 1916 with Mary Elizabeth (White) Bethel. 2 children preceded him in death. Other survivors are 2 brothers; 1 sister, and 16 grandchildren.
BETHEL, William Orville, born 02-04-1903, Jersey County, Illinois, died 29-09-1976, buried Rosedale cemetery. William Orville Bethel, 73, of Greenwood Manor nursing home, died there on Sept. 29. Services were held at the Otterville Baptist Church, H. Rev Vale Walkington officiated. Burial was in Rosedale cemetery. He was born Apr. 2, 1903 in Jersey county, a son of Rollin H. & Mary E. (White) Bethel. Bethel was a member of the Moose Lodge for 28 yrs. He is survived by 6 sisters, Jean Bethel, Mrs. Lynn (Jane) White and Mrs Allen (Enid) Bolen of Granite City, Mrs. Leslie (Tessie) Spangle of Jerseyville, Mrs. Elmer (Neva) Ridenour and Mrs. Claude (Lula) Hutchinson of Otterville. BETHELL, Chester, born 1790, South Carolina, died 26-07-1869, buried Lax?? Chester Bethell, 79, died July 26, 1869. He was born in South Carolina in 1790. He moved with his parents to Tennessee, staying there until 1814. He came to Illinois territory. The country was wild and unsettled. Indian and wild beasts were numerous. Mr Bethel and most of the settlers in that vicinity were compelled to live in what was known as Frank Jourdan’s Fort, situated in what is now Gallatin county, in southern Illinois. He remained there 3 months, when not liking the way things were conducted, he gathered together his little stock of goods and went 30 mi into the interior where he pitched a camp near a stream called Bethell’s creek, in which he lived until he could build a rude cabin. He lived there for 13 years, during a part of which frequent Indian alarms kept him anxious and alert. He was a great hunter. He killed a great many bears and panthers and had many narrow escapes. He shot a deer, which on being shot bounded away a few rods into a dense thicket. He reloaded his gun and entered the thicket to get the deer. He came suddenly upon it where it had fallen dead. Within a few feet of him and on the body of the deer was crouched a huge panther. He instantly raised his gun to his shoulder and fired, giving the panther a mortal would. A valuable dog that always followed him rushed in and grappled with the panther in his death struggle. He plunged toward the panther and stuck his hunting knife into the panther. In 1827 he came to what is now Jersey county. He moved to what is known as the “Lax” place. In 1840 he moved to Missouri and returned to Jersey County in 1849, where he stayed to his last day. He married Jane (Haynes) Bethell in early life. They were married 58 years and had 12 children. He was a lifelong democrat and voted his first ticket for James Madison and his last vote was for Seymour. He had been a long time member of the Baptist Church, but in later years became a member of the Universalist faith. His wife died in Jan. 1869.

BEVILL, Richard Daniel, born 23-11-1967, Granite City, Madison County, Illinois, died 13-09-1975, buried Scenic Hill cemetery. Richard Daniel Bevill, 8, was fatally injured on Sept. 13 in an accidental shooting at his home on RR 1 Grafton. He was born Nov. 23, 1967 in Granite City, a son of William Burley & Judith Karen (Dobson) Bevill. He is survived by his parents; 2 sisters, Mary died and Ruth M. Bevill; 1 brother, William David Bevill at home; his paternal grandmother, Alma Bevill, Puerto Rico, and maternal grandfather, William Dobson, Grafton. BEYERS, Donald E., born 28-06-1925, Winona, Minnesota, died 12-1983, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Donald E. Beyers, 58, of Fieldon was born June 28, 1925 in Winona, Minnesota. He was the son of Maude (Mann) Beyers and the late Edward Beyers. The WWII veteran was a truck driver for Gateway Transportation and retired in 1976. Services were held at Fieldon United Church of Christ with Rev. Robert Broeder officiating. Jerseyville American Legion conducted graveside rites at Oak Grove cemetery. Survivors are his wife, Althea (Staedtler) Beyers; mother, Maude Beyers of Winona, MN; 3 sons, Anthony and Richard of Winona and Gregory of Fairfax, VA; 1 brother, Robert Beyers, Winona, MN; and 6 grandchildren.
BICK, Jerome J., born Meppen, Calhoun County, Illinois, died 04-1983, buried St. Joseph cemetery. Jerome J. Bick, 74, died Mon. at Jersey Community hospital. Born in Meppen, a son of the late John & Elizabeth (Tepen) Bick, he married Viola (Seidler) Bick, who died in 1946. Surviving are 2 sons, Dale of Jerseyville and William of Hardin; 6 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Elma Seidler of Hardin and Mary Young of Jerseyville; and 3 brothers, Clemmence, Leo and Lucas, all of Hardin. He was a machinist at Owens of Alton, retiring in 1978, and a us army WWII veteran. Born in Macoupin county, he was the son of the late Joseph & Addie (Conners) Bierman. Surviving are 5 sons, Lester, Dennis and Eric Bierman, all of Jerseyville and John and Pat Bierman, both of Arkansas; 8 grandchildren; and 1 sister, Frances Milner of Godfrey. 1 brother, Joe Bierman; and 2 sister, Eva Holliday and Mary Thurm, preceded him in death. Bilbrey Sr., 84, died Feb. 21, 1988, at Jersey Community hospital after a lengthy illness. Bilbrey had been a millwright for 35 years at Laclede Steel in Madison, IL. He retired in 1968. He was born in Williamsville, MO, he was the son of the late Squire & Gracie (Marler) Bilbrey. He married the former Gayle (McMahan) on Aug. 20, 1927, in Williamsville, MO. She survives. Also surviving are 1 daughter, Ann Kirk of Jerseyville; 1 son, Jerry Bilbrey of Wood River; 4 grandchildren; 2 brother, Claude Bilbrey of Granite City and Fred Bilbrey of Granite City and 1 sister, Ailee Eads of Williamsville, MO. He was preceded in death by 1 son, Henry Bilbrey Jr.; and 6 brothers. Visitation and services were held at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Special services were conducted by Odd Fellows Lodge 53. He was a son of the late Charles & Grace (Hill) Birkenmayer, and was born Feb. 12, 1894 in Jersey county, and had spent his entire life here. He was a veteran of WWI and a member of the American Legion and WW E barrracks. BIRKENMAYER, Richard G., buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Richard G Birkenmayer, 39, whose death by suicide occurred on Tuesday evening of last week at the Birkenmayer farm north of Fidelity, was the first of 11 Jersey County young men who were attached to 3 air squadrons – 221st, 222nd,and 86th to die. Funeral rites were held at the residence, Rev L. J. Julianell, pastor of Medora Baptist church officiated. Many relatives and friends were in attendance. The body, brought by train from Fidelity to Jerseyville, was entombed in Oak Grove mausoleum temporarily with a short service conducted by Rev. A. B. Carson, pastor of the first Baptist Church, and with military honors by Worthy Post, American Legion of this city. Re-commitment of the body to a grave in the family burial plot in Oak Grove cemetery will be at a later date. Rain fell during the entire service. Birkenmayer, who was unmarried , served 500 days in the World war after enlistment in the US air force. He was in service in France as a truck driver with the 222nd aero squadron. Shortly before the close of the war he became ill, returning to New York by hospital ship. Annual reunions have been held by the 11 young men since the war and Birkenmayer was to be the host of the for the coming gathering, which had been tentatively set for the month of May. Pallbearers were 6 of his comrades: they were Virgil Campbell, Earl Birkenmayer, Gilbert Pritchaett, Leslie Dougherty, Floyd Steinkuehler and Earl Tunehorst. He is survivend by his mother, Mrs Anna Birkenmayer and his brother, Charles Birkenmayer, with whom he resided; also his fiancee Miss Hilda Dependahl, of the Brighton vicinity.

He is survived by his wife, Leola (Klunk) Bishop whom he married Dec. 27, 1947 in Jerseyville; 2 sons, Robert of Alton and William of Fieldon; 1 daughter, Margaret Taylor of Jerseyville; 4 grandchildren; and 1 sister, Rabia “sis” Grizzle of Jerseyville. BLACK, John R., died 1880. Col. John R. Black, was laid to rest in the cemetery last Friday Rev Kaniel W. Phillips, A. M., president of McKendree college, Lebanon, and Col. Black’s spiritual adviser and pastor for 3 yrs, and who baptised him and received him into the church, preached his funeral, which was largely attended (and but for the shortness of the notice would have been even more largely attended) at the Methodist church. It is a sad reflection that no matter how old one may live to be, still death forgets not to come. Col. Black had lived his three score and 10, and now the silver cord is loosed, the golden bowl is broken at the cistern. “Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher: All is vanity” Rev. Eugene May assisted in the funeral rites.

BLACKKETTER, Ray Eugene, born 27-08-1926, White Hall, Greene County, Illinois, died 06-1953, buried White Hall cemetery. Ray Eugene Blackketter, 26, was found drowned in Lake Carlinville. A search for Blackketter was started Tuesday after he failed to return home from a trip to the lake last sat. The lake was dragged by a searching party who found his shirt and shoes on the lake bank. He was found floating in the lake at 5 pm Tuesday, near the lake dam. Complete reports from an autopsy ordered by William Wise, coroner of Macoupin county, were not received at press time. The youth, a WWII Navy veteran, was the son of Orville & Maudie (Dorsett, Dossett?) Blackketter and was born in White Hall, Aug. 27, 1926. He resided in Jerseyville. Blackketter is survived by his mother, Mrs Maudie Blackketter of Jerseyville; 3 sisters, Mrs. Harold Settles of Hartford, and Betty and Peggy Blackketter of Jerseyville, and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Mellie Blackketter of White Hall. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home in Jerseyville. Services were held at the first Baptist Church in White Hall. Rev Ben Bohn officiated. Interment was in White Hall cemetery. He was a member of Worthey Post, American Legion of Jerseyville, and commitment services were held under the auspices of White Hall American Legion Post, No 70.

He died at his home in Rockbridge, IL, Sept. 26, 1901. Oct 4, 1849, he married Susan (Colwell) Blair. 9 children preceded him in death. His wife, 1 son, George H. Blair and 1 daughter, Mrs Close, survive him. He came to Illinois in 1853 and settled on a farm near Glasgoe, Scott County. In 1875 he was elected sheriff of Scott county; then moved to Winchester, IL; then to Alsey, IL. He then moved to Rockbridge to work in the mercantile business. Funeral from ME church. Elders B. E. BLAKE, Homer C., died 10-1972, buried Arlington National. Homer C. Blake, 60, died recently at Chelisea Naval hospital in Boston. He had been hospitalized the past weeks and his death followed an extended illness of leukemia. The USA (retired) veteran was a resident of Farmington, NH. Colonel Blake was the husband of former Lt Col Willia (Stephenson) Blake, daughter of the late Mr & Mrs. William Stephenson of Jerseyville. The marriage of the couple took place in Germany while both were in military service. Funeral was held at Davenport funeral home in Farmington, after which the body will be taken to Arlington National cemetery for burial. Samuel Stephenson of Jerseyville, brother of Mrs. Blake flew to Farmington to remain with her indefinitely.

She was in the first class to graduate from officers training school at Ft. Des Moines, IA and was promoted to 2nd Lt. She retired as a Lt Col. after serving 22 years in the military. She married Col. Homer Blake in 1960. She is survived by 1 sister Martha Anderson, Hardin and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband 1 brother, Sam Stephenson and 1 sister Catherine Parsell.

He was born July 4, 1935 in Jersey County to the late Jasper & Hilda (Walker) Blasa and was a bottle maker at Owens-IL. Surviving are his wife, Betty Jo (Closser) whom he married in 1955 at Bethel Methodist church; 6 sons, Randy, Funton, MO, Mike Jerseyville, Scott Fieldon, and Terry, Kyle and Lance at home; 3 sisters, Lavada Whitehead, Jerseyville, Garnetta Edwards, Greenfield, and Mary Jane Campbell of Dow and 3 grandchildren.

BLEYLER, William Enos, born 1873, died 1888. William Enos Bleyler, 15, died at the home of his guardian, Miss Annie McAdams. He suffered of spinal trouble. Funeral for the resident of Otterville, was held from Baptist Church in Otterville, Rev L. E. Cale officiating.
BLIGH, Nancy K., born 12-05-1831, Tennessee, died 04-05-1909, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Nancy K. Bligh, 78, died May 4, 1909. She was born in Tennessee and at the age of 8 moved to MO. At the age of 17, she married Peter R. Prine who died March 28, 1855. 5 children survived him. On Feb. 22, 1862 she married H. H. Bligh of Jerseyville. He died Oct. 28, 1892. They were parents of 4 children. She leaves 2 sons James E. Prine of McClusky and Francis of Jerseyville; 2 daughters, Mrs. Samuel Welch of Fieldon and Mrs. Julia A. Longstrech of Parson, KS; 24 grandchildren; 15 g-grandchildren. Funeral from the home of her son, F. A. Bligh on E. Pearl St. Rev Stephen Catt officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.
BLIGH, Preston, born 29-08-1896, Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois, died 08-02-1967, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Preston Bligh, 70 yrs, 5 mo, 9 days, of Jerseyville, retired shoe worker and veteran of WWI, died Feb. 8, at Barnes hospital in St. Louis where he had been a patient 8 days. Friends called a Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Services were held there with J. W. Jordan, minister of First Christian church of Alton, officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Services were in charge of Worthey Post American Legion and VFW. Mr Bligh was a son of the late Hugh Henry Bligh, and Mrs. Maude (Toney) Bligh Eudy, and was born in Jerseyville Aug. 29, 1896. Mr Bligh was a member of Worthy Post American Legion, VFW, WWI barracks and Moose and Eagles lodges. Surviving him are his wife, Dora Bligh of Jerseyville; 1 son, Donald Bligh of Alton; 1 daughter, Mrs. Kathleen Cox of Englewood, CA; his mother, Mrs. Maude Eudy of Alton; 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Mrs. Forrest (Goldie) Payne and Mrs. Ralph (Maude) Johnson of Jerseyville and Mrs. Frank (Mary) Sediler of Alton. His father and 1 brother, Hugh Bligh preceded him in death.

Blish, 77, who was mother advisor of the Jerseyville Assembly, Order of the Rainbow for girls for 22 yrs, before her resignation about 1 years ago, died July 8, at Blu Fountain Manor at Godfrey where she had resided the past 9 mo. Friends called at Gubser funeral home in Jerseyville. Christian Science services were observed with Mrs. Ruth Church of Alton as reader. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs Blish, a resident of Jerseyville for 67 yrs, was a daughter of the late Lewis A. & Katherine (Hoffman) Miller, and was born Sept. 19, 1886 in Cottleville, MO. -incomplete
BLODGET, Ann, born 11-08-1906, Brighton, Macoupin-Jersey County, Illinois, died 30-10-1972.Miss Anne Blodget, 66, of Brighton died Oct. 30 at St. Joseph hospital in Alton. Final rites were held at St. Paul United Methodist church with Rev. Richard Kelm officiating. She was born Aug. 11, 1906 in Brighton, graduated from Southwestern high school and attended Macmurray College at Jacksonville and Shurtlef College, Alton. Miss Blodget was an officer of the Brighton civic league and a member of the Business & Professional Women’s club, Alton and Brighton Methodist church. Until her retirement last year, she was employed as a secretary of the Family Service Visiting Nurses Association in Alton. She was previously employed at Shell Oil company in Caracas, Venezuela, for 15 years and the McCann-Ericson Advertisers in New York City. Survivors are 2 sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Cardinal of Brighton and Mrs. Alma B. Pierce of Wayland, NY and 4 brothers, William G., Ralph, Richard, and Dan Blodget.
BLODGET, Samuel Peter, died 28-8-1952, buried Brighton cemetery. Samuel Peter Blodget, 89, father of Daniel Blodget of Jerseyville, died Aug. 28, at his home in Brighton. Although he had been in failing health for the past 3 yrs, his death was unexpected. Mr Blodget was the oldest native resident of Brighton and was born and had lived his entire life in the same home. His wife preceded him in death March 11 of this year. Surviving him in addition to his son, Daniel, are 3 daughters, and 5 other sons. Funeral services were held at St. Paul Methodist Church with Rev. James Weiss officiating, assisted by Rev. Charles Boyd of Carrollton. Burial was in Brighton cemetery.
BLOOMER, John Gottfried, born 19-06-1907, Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois, died 24-05-1960, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. John Gottfried Bloomer, 52 yrs, 11 mo, and 5 days, died unexpectedly May 24, at Jersey Community hospital where he had been moved a short time earlier after suffering a heart attack at his home. He was Superintendent of Public Welfare in Jersey county. The death of Mr. Bloomer came as a shock to relatives and friends. Some few years ago the decedent had suffered a serious illness of extended duration but he had recovered and was able to return to his work with the welfare office. The sudden illness Tuesday came without warning. Funeral services are to be held at the first Presbyterian church in Jerseyville. Rev M. Edwards Breed officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Military committal rites were held under the auspices of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post of which he was a member. Mr Bloomer, a son of Mrs. Mary (Whipple) Bloomer and the late John G. Bloomer, was born in Springfield, June 19, 1907. He was educated in the schools in Jerseyville and upon graduation accepted a position in the Law office of the late Martin J. Dolan. Mr Bloomer was elected to the office of Justice of the Peace in Jersey Township at the age of 21, and held the distinction of being the youngest man elected to this office in the state of Illinois. Mr Bloomer served with the army during WWII and for the past 24 years has been engaged in public welfare work in Jersey county. In that period of time he had taken educational work in the welfare field at Washington University in St. Louis. He had served as an elder of the Presbyterian church of Jerseyville. Surviving are his wife, Cora (Darr) Bloomer; 1 daughter, Helen Margaret Bloomer, Assistant Night Superintendent of Nurses at St. Luke hospital in St. Louis; 1 son, John, a member of this years graduating class who last week received notice of his acceptance for the United States Military at Annapolis, MD; his mother, Mrs. John G. Bloomer Sr., of Jerseyville; 1 brother, Major T. C. Bloomer of Granville, OH, and 3 sisters, Mrs. G. M. Kruse of Jerseyville, Mrs. Fred V. Peter of Mineral and Mrs. Wilbur Anderson of Roswell, NM.
BLOOMER, Mary Maude (Whipple), born 02-01-1875, Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana, died 25-12-1967, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Mary Maude Bloomer, 89, a longtime resident of Jerseyville, died Christman night at the Henry County Convalescent home in Geneseo where she had been living for the past 11 mo. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Louis Purcell officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs Bloomer, a daughter of the late Asbury & Ada (Jones) Whipple, was born in Madison, IN, and would have been 90 years old Jan. 2. Her survivors are 3 daughter, Mrs G. M. Kruse of Jerseyville, Mrs. Fred Peter of Cambridge, and Mrs. W. S. Anderson of Roswell, NM; 1 son, Thomas C. Bloomer of Champaign; 15 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren. She was a member of the Jerseyville Methodist Church. Her husband, John G. Bloomer, a stone engraver, and 1 son, John, preceded her in death.

Charles Warren Blumstein, 29, of Belvedere died March 28 from a self inflicted gunshot wound services were held at Burkwheeler Funeral Home in Belvedere with burial in Belvedere cemetery. Born in Alton, he was the son of Louise (Mayberry) Johnson of Shipman and Warren Blumstein of Brighton and attended Jersey Community high school. His survivors are his wife, Pam, a son and daughter; 3 half brothers, Jim, Bob and Howard Greenlee; 3 half sister, Kathleen and Virginia Greenlee of Jerseyville and Lela of Bloomington; 2 step brothers, Gary and Jeff Blumstein and 1 step sister, Susan; maternal grandfather, Howard Mayberry of Brighton.
BLYTHE, Richard B., born 1871, died 1927. Richard B. Blythe, 56, died at Peru City, NE, according to news received here. Son of James S. Blythe and Mary Ann (Hill) Blythe, they moved from Jersey County to Nebraska in 1877. Mr Blythe was a cousin of Miss Nellie Hill and H. B. Hill of Jerseyville.
