Brick School
BRICK SCHOOL REPORT, May 21, 1879 (no source).
The school was closed May 13th. The programe for the evening consisted of select reading, a general review in grammar, arithmetic, penmanship and geography, interspersed with singing. In the reading the scholars did real well, and in the review they acquitted themselves nobly, those who answered 90 percent and over, of the review, were: Alpha Nelson, Corrie Gaston, Minnie Thatcher, Bertha Armstrong, Sarah Alward, Sarah Keyes, Katie Nutt, Nora Dugan and Gussie Cray. The majority of the pupils gave all the principles of arithmetic, penmanship and grammars as far as studied, and the capitals of the United States, South America and Europe. The total number of names registered was 47, total attendance 31.41, greatest during one day 29, and the average during the eight months nearly 19. Alpha Nelson did not lose a day during the entire term. The prizes given were: First class, Alpha Nelson; second class, Minnie Thatcher; third class, Katie Thatcher. As a teacher I refer with pride to the readings and promptness with which the pupils answered, as it was far beyond my most sanguine expectations. Allow me here to return my thanks and gratitude to those of the patrons who assisted me in striving to promote the best interests of the school and especially to the directors who so nobly stood by me during the term. Wm. P. Miller.
