James G. and Elizabeth Ralston Swann home
My father was Thomas W. Swann, Grandfather was Francis Henry Swann, his father was JamesGodfrey Swann (mother and James G.’s second wife, Elizabeth Rhodes) and his father was Francis Godfrey Swann. James Godfrey Swann and father and others are buried in Salem Cemetery. I took this photo on a visit to Elsah around 1954. It is a photo of the James Godfrey farm house which was built around 1836 to 1839. I was in it once. I believe my grandfather was born in it. A picture of it is in the the Elsah Museum labled the Spatz House – they lived in it a long time but it was built by my great grandfather, James G.for his bride and first wife, Elizabeth Ralston Swann. A drawing of it appears in the illustrations of the 1872 publication. There is also a nice write up on J. G. Swann in same publication. My dad’s oldest brother James Byron Swann had a lot of stories about it. We have searched for years collectively on my side of the family for a record of who Francis Godfrey Swann’s parents were and where in North Carolina was he born. No luck yet. – Donovan Swann
