Amos Lurton Conklin
1849 – 1921
Amos Lurton CONKLIN was the son of Joseph and Charlotte (ROSS) CONKLIN of Jerseyville. He was born on 27 October 1849 in Reily Township (Butler County), Ohio. In 1863, he moved to Jerseyville, Illinois with his parents. It was in Jerseyville on 27 October 1874 that he married Sarah VINCENT (VINSON), daughter of William and Ellen (MARK) VINCENT. Sarah was born on 11 July 1855 in Hastings (Dakotah County), Minnesota. Sarah’s mother died when she was four and Sarah grew up in the home of Sanford ROSS in Jerseyville. Her father had left the family earlier and moved west. Amos was a farmer in Jersey County. He is said to have liked horses, as did many men of his time and had several trotters. His son, Ted always spoke highly of him and held him in high regard. Amos died on 23 March 1921 in Jerseyville. Sarah lived on Lafayette Street four many years several houses away from her son, Theodore L. Conklin. Sarah died in St. Louis, Missouri at her daughters’ home on 19 April 1941. They are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.

The children of Amos and Sarah (Vincent) Conklin were: Etta May Conklin (born 19 February 1877), Cora Belle Conklin (born 13 June 1880), Nellie Conklin (born ands died 1882), Della Ross Conklin (born 11 March 1886), Theodore Lurton Conklin (born on 21 March 1888).
Etta Conklin and Lillie Beaty
On the back of the picture, it says it is a picture of Etta CONKLIN and Lillie BEATY. This Lillie may be Etta’s cousin, Laura Beaty, daughter of David and Lydia (Conklin) Beaty or may be a Lillie Beaty of Jerseyville.
Etta May Conklin was the daughter of Amos and Sarah (Vincent) Conklin. She was born on 19 February 1877 in Jersey County. Etta said that her high school class was the first one to have a prom which was held at her home. Etta lived with her sister Cora Conklin in St. Louis for many years, but in the1960’s returned to Jerseyville where she lived her remaing years until her death on 13 April 1971. She is buried with her parents at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.
