Rosedale cemetery

Archer tombstone

The Archer tombstone is of Lt. Archer who was the army officer who resigned from the army before the Civil War and was shot down by Northern sympathizers as his wife and children watched. I believe he was from Virginia. His wife and children fearing they would be killed because they saw who killed him, ran all the way to Rosedale village and ended up under the care of Freeman Mains in Jersey County. Freeman was a great-great uncle of mine and at one time, my family and I lived in the house in Rosedale township where he was murdered. He too (Archer), was a relative of mine.

Gordon tombstone

Hubert Gordon died in Viet Nam and the first Nam veteran in the county to be buried. He wasn’t from Rosedale but his wife’s family was.
