Landon BiographyPast and Present of the City of Springfield and Sangamon County Illinois, Vol. II, 1904 by Joseph Wallace, M. A., published by the S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., page 1300:
Charles Landon, one of the native sons of Sangamon County, was born in Auburn township, April 8, 1871. His paternal grandfather, William D. LANDON, was a native of New England and in 1830 left his home in Vermont, starting with a team for Illinois. He traveled for two months and at length reached Greene county, at which time it was a part of Jersey county, Illinois. There were few settlers in that district of the state, the work of progress and improvement having been scarcely begun. Mr. Landon began work by the month as a farm hand and was thus employed for a number of years. In 1837 he was married. His family numbered ten children, seven of whom are now living: Austin, who resides in Virden; Horace, the father of our subject; William, who is living in Jerseyville, Illinois; Alice, the wife of B. F. WORKMAN, of Auburn; Sarah, the wife of T. S. CHAPMAN, an ex-senator of Jereyville, Illinois; Emma, who is the widow of Andrew EVERTS and is residing near Jerseyville; and Mary, who is the wife of Marion COWAN and is also living near Jerseyville. William COWAN, the grandfather, began life in Illinois as a poor boy, but by hard work and good management he attained success and was one of the substantial citizens of the county at the time of his death, in fact, he was one of the most extensive landowners, having made judicious investments in real estate until he became the owner of one thousand acres. He passed away in 1873 and his widow is now living in Jerseyville, Illinois, at the ripe old age of ninety years.
Horace LANDON was born in Illinois, and acquired his education in the country schools. He received ample training at farm work on the old family homestead and assisted his father in the cultivation of field and meadow until the time of his marriage. In 1866 he wedded Miss Flora CONVERSE , who was born in Greene county, Illinois, December 29, 1849, a daughter of Uriah C. CONVERSE, whose birth occurred in Vermont. Throughout his business career Horace LANDON has carried on agricultural pursuits and has led a life characterized by industry and enterprise. He and his wife are members of the Advent Christian church and he belongs to the Woodmen Camp of Auburn, while his political support is given to the Democracy. Unto him and his wife have been born nine children: Ella M., born August 9, 1867, was married in 1890 to J. R. POGUE, of Sullivan, Illinois, and died in 1895, leaving two children, Stanley and Harold. Eugene born May 22, 1869, and now an advertising merchant, was married in 1896 to Margaret ALEXANDER and they have two daughters, Marjory and Elizabeth. Charles is the third of the family. Mable, born June 9, 1877, was married in 1900 to William ANDERSON.
Charles LANDON pursued his education in the country schools in early boyhood and became a member of the first class that graduated from the high school of Auburn in 1889. He was afterward a student in the Gem City Business College at Quincy, Illinois, after which he worked for one year on a farm. He then engaged in clerking for a year in a general store and throughout his business career he has improved every opportunity for advancement. Following his marriage he engaged in farming for three years and then turned his attention to the grocery business, becoming proprietor of a store in Auburn, which he conducted for five years. On the expiration of that period he returned to his farm in Stockington Township (Talkington Township?–mak) in 1900 and is now engaged in general agricultural pursuits and in the raising of sheep. On the 14th of April, 1892, Mr. Landon was married to Miss Alberta WYATT, a daughter of James and Martha (TUTRALL) WYATT, natives of Illinois. Unto them were born three children, but the eldest died in infancy. The others are Charles Raeborn, born May 4, 1900, and Horace, born August 16, 1902. Mrs. Landon is a member of the Christian church and Mr. Landon holds memberhip with the Woodmen Camp, No. 119, and with the Masonic lodge at Auburn. His political allegiance is given to the Republican party and he is interested in all matters of citizenship pertaining to public progress and improvement.
