Rebecca (Hansel) HutchinsonJerseyville Republican, May 1912
Rebecca, nee HANSEL, was born September 26, 1816 in Tarrytown, Pennsylvania and married John HUTCHINSON in Trenton, New Jersey in 1834. There were five children: William (died August 17, 1909), Virginia (died August 22, 1911), Llewellyn (died September 3, 1910), Emma and Anna May who died in infancy. They came to Illinois in 1837. Llewellyn, William and Virginia all died in a three year period. Rebecca lived with her grandaughter in St. Louis but returned to her home in W. Pearl Street. In 1841 she was converted and baptised by Elijah DODSON at Otter Creek. She was the first member baptised after the Jerseyville Baptist Church was organized. At the time of her death on May 2, 1912, she had one sister, Sarah B. NORRIS and one brother Lloyd S. HANSELL still living. At that time she was probably the oldest resident of Jerseyville and Jersey County. Her son, James Llewellyn, known locally as “Shortie,” was associated with P.T. BARNUM in show business and accumulated considerable wealth. See James L. Hutchinson. Mrs. Hutchinson treasured the rose she received from the hands of President McKINLEY during a visit she made to the White House while she was in the East.
