Zopher Cory BiographyFrom Family History composed by Mary Ann Kaylor, gggrandaughter of Zophar Cory.

Zophar CORY was born 24 June 1783 (Bible Record) in Morris County, NJ the son of David Cory and Mary BATES. He descends from a long line of Cory/Corey’s who were first in the US by 1644. John COREY whose first record in the US was first mentioned at Southampton, Long Island, NY on the 7th of March 1644, as a Whale Commissioner for his district. He received a grant of land the following day (Southampton Town Records, I., 32,33). He was said to have been a Quaker.

Zophar Cory bought 160 acres of land from the Government on the 15th of April 1835 in SW 1/4 of Sec. 17, Jersey South Township, Jersey County IL (Land Patents, GLO records), which was then Greene County. He didn’t stay long as he is listed in the 1840 and 1850 Greene County IL Census. By 1860 he was in Macoupin County, where he died 5 November 1860 (Cory Bible records & Tombstone Reading) and is buried in Chesterfield Cemetery.

He married Alice MYRICK, daughter of Bezaleel Myrick and Sarah RUSSELL, in Bridport, Addison County, VT 11 Mar 1813 ( Bridport, Vermont Town Records, Vol. 3, page 202). Alice Myrick Cory died 30 April 1867 (Cory Bible Records and Tombstone Reading) and is buried in Old Kane Cemetery, Greene County, IL. Zophar and Alice had seven known children: Elvira born 1814, married Wm. COWAN #1 and Wm. D. LANDON #2; Mary Ann, b 1816, married Isac HODGES; Ira Myrick, born 1818 and died 1819; Emma Hayward born 1820, married Calvin C. MARSHALL; Oliver Perry born 1824, married Isabella MORFOOT; LOVINA MYRICK born 1827; Sarah Elmira born 1829, married Uriah CONVERSE.

Lovina Myrick CORY (Cory Bible Records) my ancestor, was born 2 Jun 1827, Bridport, Addison County, VT and married Jeremiah CONVERSE 10 Sept 1846 in Greene County, IL and died 27 Apr 1897 in Barr Township, Macoupin County, IL. Lovina and Jeremiah had seven children including my grandfather Frederick Walter Converse. They both died in Macoupin County, IL and are buried in Asbury Mound Cemetery, in Barr Township.
