William BartlettWilliam BARTLETT was born July 3, 1802, in Maine. He married Avis CROCKETT at Thomaston, Maine, on December 31, 1826. They had three children before the early death of Avis in 1831. By trade William was a ships carpenter.
A few years later, William BARTLETT and his children came to the far west, to farm, buying 80 acres of land in 1834 in Seneca County, Ohio. He married a second time to a woman named Margaret, and they appear in the 1840 and 1850 census of Seneca County, Ohio.
Wishing to follow the star of the empire, William BARTLETT and his family moved to Jersey County, Illinois, in 1853, settling on farmland a mile and a half north of Delhi.
This family is recorded in the 1860 census of Jersey County, living near Delhi.
William BARTLETT took an active interest in the politics of the day, and was a Republican. He voted in the 1876 presidential election, although he was blind and near death. He died November 27, 1876, on his farm at Delhi, and his obituary was published in the December 1, 1876, edition of The Jerseyville Democrat.
A son of William BARTLETT and Avis CROCKETT, Benjamin Crockett BARTLETT, was born in 1828 in Maine, and came with his father and step-mother to Jersey County in 1853. Benjamin BARTLETT married Julia STURDEVANT in Sangamon County in 1855, and they settled in Jerseyville on S. Lafayette Street, where Benjamin was a carpenter. Benjamin saw service in the Civil War as a musician from 1862 to 1865. After the war the family continued to live in Jerseyville, where Benjamin died in 1881 and his wife Julia died in Jerseyville in 1919.
A son of Benjamin BARTLETT and Julia STURDEVANT was Walter BARTLETT, a life-long resident of Jerseyville, born in 1868. He married Lulu CONRAD in 1903. Walter served in the Spanish-American War. This third-generation Jersey County BARTLETTs died in 1957 and 1956, respectively, and are buried near the entrance to Oak Hill Cemetery. Their daughter, my mother, was the first person baptized at the Jerseyville Baptist Church, in 1905.
