Daniel ALLEN and three of his sons, Daniel Jr., John and James built cabins on the South bank of Macoupin creek opposite the mouth of Taylor Creek (now Jersey County, IL). In the latter part of of 1815, Daniel Sr., Daniel Jr., and James moved west of there and built a house on land in Township 9, Range 12. They were the first known white settlers in this area, along with the HARRIFORD brothers.
Daniel ALLEN, Sr., was my ancestor and according to his pension application S-32093, 1832 he was 70 years old, born in Burke County, North Carolina and was born in 1762 or 73. He was a farmer and died in Greene County, IL March 1837. It is reported, but no proof has been established to date, that in addition to his 3 sons who accompanied him to Greene County in the early 1800’s, he had 7 other children. No other names are known at present. He is recorded to have married Mary SMART, the daughter of William Sr. and Isabella Smart on the 3rd of November 1786, in Rutherford County, North Carolina. It is reported that he may have also married a second wife named Althea HALE.
Daniel ALLEN, Jr. was reported to have first been married to a woman named Sally and secondly to an unknown woman and of this union came, Louisa. Daniel Allen Jr. died intestate (Greene County, IL record) in 1829 and his occupation was also a farmer. His children are listed as Louisa; Nancy; Daniel R.; Charles Jackson; Helen S.; Hillia S.; and Julia Ann.
Louisa ALLEN, born circa 1812 in Tennessee. She first married Nathan DANIELS, the son of another early settler, Thomas Daniels, on the 5th of June 1823 in Kane, Greene County, Illinois. Her marriage was sworn to by James Allen and consent was given by Daniel Allen. Louisa was also married to William HOPE, on the 25 of December 1838 in Greene County, Illinois. Louisa died circa 1861 and can be found in the 1850 Greene County census. Louisa and Nathan’s children were, JAMES IRWIN DANIELS; William Lee; Nathan Jr.; Margaret; and Rebecca Jane. Her children with William were, Belinda or Marinda; Emily; and Nancy E..
