History of Township 8, Range 11 – Jerseyville

The first settlement and improvement was made at what is know as Hickory Grove, by a Mr. Ballard, in the spring of 1822. Soon after,John Falkner settled near by. In 1824, J. N. English, then quite a young man, came into the county. Subsequently Thomas English, Alfredcarpenter, N. L. Adams, and others, settled in the township. The first marriage was that of Mr. Hamilton to Hester Falkner. The first birth was an infant daughter to Thomas and Ella English. It was also the first death. The first school was taught in a log-house then standing in the yard of Thomas English, by John Sloan, about the year 1827. The first preacher was Rev. Peck or Clark. This township is slightly undulating prairie occasionally interspersed with a natural grove of timer. The improvements are of a high order. The beautiful city of Jerseyville is centrally located in the precinct.

The first settlement was made in this township near the mouth of theIllinois River, by George Finley, about the year 1818. Sanford Hughes, James Babcock, George Pixley, Joseph Marshall, and Jude Warner, were among the first settlers. The first entry of land in the present limits of Jersey County, was made by James Mason, covering the present town of Grafton, in 1821. William H. Allen was the first justice of the peace, elected in August, 1821. The first constable was elected the same time. The Rocky Bluffs, on the south line of this township are among the prominent and among the most valuable quarries in the state. The township is broken and rolling, and was mostly timber. The present commercial prospects of Grafton bids fair to add much to the future wealth of this township.

Among the first settlers in this township, were Samuel Lofton, William McDow, Josiah White, Gregg McDaniel, James Dobbs [Dabbs], and others, who settled before 1824. The first justice of the peace was Gilbert Douglas, who was elected in 1834. The first constable was Jay M. Hurd, who was appointed in 1833. The first resident physician was Silas Hamilton. Rev. Mr. Phelps, a Methodist preacher, and the Rev. Mr. Dodson, were among the early preachers. The first school was taught at the house of Ezra Hurd, by Caroline Ripson, in the summer of 1832. The surface is mostly rolling, and was originally about one-fourth prairie, the balance timber and rough. The soil is well adapted to the growth of grain, grass, and fruits. It contains some highly cultivated farms, and has an industrious and intelligent population. Mr. Gregg McDaniel built the first grist-mill having water-power, in 1829, which was the first of this power erected in the county.

History of Township 9, Range 10

The first settlement made in this township was by John Huitt and Mathew Cowan, on what is now called Hawkins Prairie, in 1825. Among other settlers were Richard Chowning and James Richie, John Hawkins, Rev. Jacob Rhodes, Benj. Cleaver, Amos Pruitt, Eli Fitzgerald, Henry Floyd, John Twitchell and William Palmer. The first sermon was preached by Rev. Gideon Blackburn, a Presbyterian clergyman, in 1833. The first school was taught by Miss Caroline Langdon in 1834. She taught in a room in the residence of William Palmer. The first birth of which we find a record, is that of Henry, son of William Palmer, born in August 1833. The first death among the permanent settlers was that of John Twitchell, August 10, 1833. This township was originally about one half prairie, the balance timber and rough. The surface is moderately undulating, of a rich soil, and it contains, at this time, some well cultivated farms second to none in the county. The people are enterprising and intelligent. Kemper is in the midst of a rich well cultivated part of the county, and affords good shipping facilities, per rail, for stock and grain.
