Rules for copying charges by the Illinois State Archives (these rules do not apply to IRAD. Beginning January 1, 1998 the Illinois State Archives will no longer bill for copies. Instead, prepaid $5.00 vouchers, each containing ten $.50 credits, must be purchased and sent in with research requests. If the desired record is located and copied, Archives staff will punch the voucher for the appropriate amount and return it with the copy. (Vouchers may not, however, be used to pay for bills issued by our Illinois Regional Archives Depositories (IRAD) or those previously incurred at the Archives.) Valid for two years after purchase, vouchers may be obtained by sending a check to the archives at the below address. They are now also able to accept credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, & Discover/Novus) as payment for larger bills, such as book purchases, although a $0.40 surcharge is added for this service.

Please follow these guidelines when requesting information by mail:
1. Ask for one or two SPECIFIC items at a time.
2. Designate the specific record to be searched (e.g. the year for a census record, the war for a service record).
3. Provide the complete name(s) of the person(s) to be searched (no more than two at a time).
4. When possible, include the names of spouses and children and their ages and birthplaces to help staff identify the correct entry.
5. Do not submit a second request until you have received an answer to your first request.
